  • NDC administration to investigate activities of ‘Operation Vanguard’, ‘Galamstop’ – Mahama

The next administration of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), will investigate the activities of “Operation Vanguard” and “Galamstop”, which were established to curb the activities of illegal miners involved in the small scale mining industry.

John Dramani Mahama, Leader and flagbearer of the NDC, said he would probe their activities to ensure that those involved in any corrupt deals were made to face the full rigours of the law.

He said, “Operation Vanguard” and “Operation Galamstop” were established by the current Government to help streamline the small scale mining industry, however, they ended up seizing the machinery of small scale miners such as excavators; saying the excavators were allegedly sold to certain individuals.

He said some elements in “Operation Vanguard” and “Operation Galamstop”, who took advantage of their operations to commit crimes were still walking free; and that he was sounding a note of caution to them that NDC Government was coming back to power.

He said those of them who stole people’s items, who seized people’s items for their own selfish interest and were still walking free, would be investigated and those found wanting would have charges brought against them.

The Presidential Candidate said this at a mini-rally at Mponyanse in the Adansi Akrofoum Constituency in the Obuasi Municipality of the Ashanti Region, as part of his six-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region.

The campaign has since been suspended following the demise of former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Mr Mahama gave small scale miners the assurance that his next administration would track down all their seized excavators and return them to their rightful owners.

He said the next NDC government would grant presidential pardon to all small scale miners, who were imprisoned for engaging in galamsey activities.

He said the next NDC government would also see to it that mining licenses and concessions which were illegitimately seized were returned to their rightful owners.

Mr Mahama appealed to Ghanaians to vote the NDC back to power on December 7 for it to continue its good works.

Nana Kwabena Anti, Ankobeahene of Amponyanse, appealed to the Presidential Candidate to fix their roads and also establish a senior high school (SHS) in the town for them, should he win on December 7.

They urged the citizens to promote and maintain in all activities before, during, and after the elections.

A statement issued by the two organisations said in peace messages captured in short video productions appealed to Ghanaians to make a conscious effort during this campaign season to avoid matters and acts that would generate conflict and violence to mar the peace the country was currently enjoying.

  • You have done well – President commends Foreign Minister

President Akufo-Addo, has performed a ceremony to commission an ultra-modern passport office on Friday in Accra.

In a brief speech, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, commended the “dynamic” Sector Minister, Ayorkor Botchwey, for her contribution towards the construction and completion of the edifice.

He was impressed with the work of the Minister in ensuring the transformation of the operations of the office under the Ministry and bringing to bare innovative ways in acquiring passports.

In what looked like a clear approval and appreciation of the Minister’s work over the period, the President, turned to her by saying in the Ga dialect “You have done well”.

The plush head office sited on the Gamel Abdul Nasser Avenue at Ridge near the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) and the British High Commission, is a three level purpose-built edifice, with ancillary facilities such as a meeting room, cafeteria for staff and a well-structured record and archival room among others.

It is expected that the new edifice, will provide the most conducive and enabling environment for both staff and prospective applicants

The acquisition of passports, has been made easy and brought to the doorsteps of Ghanaians, following the establishment of Passport Application Centres in some regional capitals namely Kumasi, Tamale, Koforidua, Tema Hope, Takoradi and Sunyani, as well as Premium Passport Application Centres (PACs) in Accra and Kumasi to provide expedited services.

There are also processes in place to renovate all existing regional Passport Application Centres, to give them a facelift and improve service delivery.

Two other PACs will soon be commissioned in Central Regional capital Cape Coast and Wa in the Upper West Region. The two events which will be held in the coming days, will also include a new Premium Centre in Tamale.

Already, the Ministry has extended biometric passport services to Ghana’s Diplomatic Missions abroad and so a total of 22 of such Missions, will commence the issuance of biometric passports by the second quarter of next year, 2021.

In a speech, the sector Minister, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, said the commissioning of the office is as a result of critical reforms and interventions taken by the Akufo-Addo government to significantly transform the operations of the Passport Office.

The continuous transformation has helped eliminate business of middlemen notoriously known as goro boys, who until recently paraded at the environs of the Office searching for desperate applicants to do business with by charging them exorbitant fees.

“We have successfully implemented the online passport application system, thereby phasing out the manual application system, which hitherto was the norm.

These interventions have eliminated all the difficulties associated with acquisition of passports, notably turnaround time for delivery of passports, document fraud and middlemen popularly known as goro boys”.

Madam Botchwey, was particularly concerned about the security and integrity attached to the Ghanaian passport, saying it is the responsibility of every citizen to guard the passport application process and not yield to certain unscrupulous people who scheme to undermine the integrity of the document.

“We need the cooperation and support of all stakeholders to protect the sanctity of our passports”. She admonished the management of the new office to preserve and properly maintain having invested scarce resources into it establishment.

She expressed immense gratitude to the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei Opare, who played major role in the allocation of the site and its refurbishment and also the Consultants, Architectural and Engineering Services Limited and a few others.

  • Ghana signs agreement to support Digital Transformation Centre

The Government of Ghana has signed a partnership agreement deal with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Norwegian Government aimed at the continuous support of the Digital Transformation Centre (DTC) in the country.

The task spearheaded by the Minister of Communications, Mrs. Ursula Owusu-Ekuful seeks at scaling up and strengthening digital skills training for underserved communities in Ghana, in collaboration with Cisco and the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC).

At the launch held virtually yesterday with other world leaders to sign the agreement, Mrs. Ursula Owusu revealed the initiative would provide 14,000 Ghanaian citizens with job-ready digital skills, in particular women entrepreneurs, pupils, teachers and marginalized groups, through 200 centres across the country.

According to her, the new partnership will help Digital Transformation Centres, in particular, Ghana to accelerate building an inclusive digital society, to ensure that lack of knowledge and skills is not a barrier to participation in the digital economy, and to contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

“Since 2017, The Ministry of Communications, through the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC), has provided telecommunications connectivity to over 2,000 communities as part of the flagship Rural Telephony Project, enhancing the socio-economic lives of over 1,200,000 citizens in rural Ghana. We are in the process of expanding access to an additional 2016 communities to connect some 3 million people thereby providing 95% of our population with voice and data connectivity within the next 18 months.

“That is some of the use we are putting our universal access fund to and have secured a credit facility to finance this project upfront. Ghana has the second highest data penetration rate and the fastest growing mobile money market in Sub-Saharan Africa according to Oxford Business Group. It is therefore imperative that we scale up efforts to ensure that these developments are available in, within the reach of and experienced by everybody living in any part of the country if indeed, we are to leave no one behind as we desire.”

She added, “Despite these efforts to facilitate the expansion of ICT to rural areas, there is still a wide digital skill gap between citizens in the urban and rural areas. We are therefore delighted that the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has included Ghana in the Digital Transformation Centres (DTC) programme, which will facilitate the development of digital skills for citizens mainly at the basic and intermediate level. The initiative is part of a broader goal of building an inclusive digital society where lack of digital skills will not be a barrier to participation in the digital economy.

“We are especially grateful to the Norwegian government for their support for this programme, and to Cisco for the provision of content for the training. Gvv providing all our citizenry with ICT skills is fundamental for socio-economic development, these skills will enable the beneficiaries to learn how to use ICT as both a tool and facilitator of progress and financial independence. This is the fundamental goal of our President. Without the requisite digital skills, the bulk of our population will be unable to enjoy the benefits of the many digital interventions undertaken by this government to formalise the economy, promote greater efficiency, and transparency and reduce corruption.”

The Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, Houlin Zhao on his part expressed satisfaction over the partnership adding that, the Digital Transformation Centre initiative targets people who need basic digital skills to use digital tools and access e-services and those who seek to enhance their basic and intermediate skills.

  • Open Arms rescue ship saves scores in the Mediterranean

Rescue teams out in force on Wednesday in the Mediterranean as they tried to save some 88 people, including children and babies, who have been shipwrecked on a flimsy boat that gave way.

The Open arms vessel said it recovered five bodies and that the rickety boat collapsed and tipped them into the sea.

The Spanish NGO managed to distribute waistcoats and masks in the moments before the ground sank.

It is the second migrant boat that the organisation’s vessel has rescued in less than 24 hours.

Several miles away it was a similar situation but on a different boat. Some 13 people drowned off the Libyan coast while it managed to save 85 who were adrift and in danger of sinking in international waters.

Their boat was badly damaged, with water and gasoline spilled inside.

The NGO has criticised the fact that the countries of the Mediterranean have abandoned these people and have not moved government relief teams.

Since the start of the year, more than 575 migrants have died while trying to reach Europe, according to the UN’s Migration body the IOM.

The rescue ship set sail from the port of Barcelona (northeast Spain) on November 4 bound for the central Mediterranean, where in recent days it was waiting to receive a request for help.

  • Ouattara meets opposition for talks on Ivory Coast election crisis

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara met with a main opposition rival on Wednesday and promised to pursue talks aimed at calming a standoff over the October 31 election, which has ignited clashes killing scores of people.

Ouattara met with opposition candidate and former president Henri Konan Bedie in Abidjan.

The election handed Ouaterra a third term, which some say violates a two-term constitutional limit.

“It was the first meeting… to break the ice and restore trust,” said Ouattara.

“And we agreed to meet again very soon to continue this dialogue, which has got off to a good start and mutual trust is restored.”

Both Ouattara, 78, and Bedie said the meeting was an important first step but did not indicate that they had made any concessions.

Bedie, 86, said: “In the days and weeks ahead, we will call each other and meet so that the country becomes what it was before.”

Ouattara was declared victor of the election with more than 94 per cent of the vote, which was boycotted by the main opposition.

Up to 85 people have been killed in the clashes that ensued after Ouattara decided to run for a third term.

More than 8,000 people have fled the country to seek refuge in neighbouring states, fearing the violence last seen after the 2010 election, which killed more than 3,000 people, could reignite.

  • ‘Ramos is on a different level’ – Spain boss Enrique pays tribute to Real Madrid star

Luis Enrique praised “unique” Sergio Ramos after the Spain captain equalled Italy great Gianluigi Buffon’s European caps record in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with the Netherlands.

Ramos was brought on five minutes from time at the Johan Cruijff ArenA for his 176th international appearance, some 15 years after making his senior debut.

The Real Madrid centre-back can overtake Buffon as Europe’s most-capped international footballer should he feature against Switzerland in Basel on Saturday.

He is also within eight appearances of the worldwide caps record, which is currently held by former Egypt midfielder Ahmed Hassan.

“Sergio is unique. He is on a different level,” he said after the match. “The appearance record is only within the reach of those who are very gifted.”

Enrique fielded an experimental XI that included debutant goalkeeper Unai Simon, plus returning quartet Koke, Alvaro Morata, Hector Bellerin, and Marco Asensio.

Morata set up Sergio Canales for Spain’s 18th-minute opener – the ninth goal the Juventus striker has been directly involved in nine games for club and country this term.

“Alvaro has been very good but it is the same as we have seen these months at Juve,” Enrique said. “We caused problems for them with him in the attack.”

Koke also impressed in Amsterdam as he attempted more passes in the opposition half (29) and produced more tackles (four) than any other player on the field.

Asked about the Atletico Madrid midfielder’s display, Enrique said: “He is a player who gives us total guarantee that he will perform at a very high level. He did very well, exactly what I asked of him, and has the personality to play there.”

Spain has won only two of their six matches this calendar year but Enrique insisted he is happy with where his side is ahead of key Nations League games with Switzerland and Germany over the next week.

“I have a good feeling because this was a complicated game for us,” he said. “We had some good phases, although in the second half we became a little bit more disorganized.

“But in general I am satisfied with my side, who showed a good attitude. We had a plan in place to bring in some fresh players ahead of the two competitive matches. I am more than satisfied with what I have seen.”

  • State Department is preventing Biden from accessing messages from foreign leaders

A stack of messages from foreign leaders to President-elect Joe Biden are sitting at the State Department but the Trump administration is preventing him from accessing them, according to State Department officials familiar with the messages.

Traditionally, the State Department supports all communications for the President-elect, which is why many countries began sending messages to State over the weekend.

But with Biden prohibited from accessing State Department resources by the Trump administration, because President Donald Trump refuses to accept Biden’s victory, dozens of incoming messages have not been received.

Biden’s team is in touch with foreign governments without State Department involvement, and he has held numerous calls with leaders, including Germany’s Angela Merkel and Canada’s Justin Trudeau. But they are operating without the logistical and translation support that the State Department operations center provides.

“They would prefer to be using the State Department resources,” said a source familiar with the situation, who noted that the Biden team is having to deal with the unexpected challenge of facilitating these calls.

Not only is Biden being blocked by the State Department from receiving messages and assistance facilitating and from preparing for calls, on Tuesday Secretary of State Mike Pompeo refused to acknowledge Biden’s victory, saying that “there will be a smooth transition to a second Trump administration,” igniting a furore and roiling diplomats.

Biden is also being blocked from getting the same intelligence briefings as the President, known as the President’s Daily Brief, and should the Trump administration continue to block a typical transition close to Inauguration Day on January 20, there are concerns Biden’s administration will be playing catch-up the day he takes office.

Foreign leaders have begun to figure out that State cannot get them in touch with the President-elect and their teams have reached out to former Obama-era diplomats for their assistance on how to send congratulatory messages to Biden’s team, sources told CNN. Some foreign governments feel they are navigating an unfamiliar maze, foreign diplomats have told CNN.

CNN has asked the State Department and the Biden transition team for comment.

In the past, the State Department has facilitated a smoother process.
“It was helpful to have State ops place the calls and to provide translation services, and we were grateful for the cooperation from the Bush administration for making that happen,” said Denis McDonough, who served in the Obama administration and worked with Obama during the transition.

    Calls aren’t highly sensitive

The calls taking place right now are not highly sensitive, and even during a well-oiled transition period they are not normally conducted on secure lines, multiple sources explained.

“These calls in the past have been handled on open lines. They are congratulatory calls,” McDonough said, adding that both sides are providing readouts, which is consistent with protocol.

Barack Obama often made these calls to foreign leaders on his cell phone when he was President-elect, explained a State Department official who worked on setting up those calls at the time. But they all went through the operations center, which meant there is a government record of the calls he made.

Career officials at the State Department are ready to help the Biden team when the time comes.

“The agencies implemented the law faithfully prior to the election. The materials are ready, the offices are ready, everything is ready; they are waiting for the green light,” said David Marchick, the director of the Center for Presidential Transition at the Partnership for Public Service.

Operating without State Department support right now, the Biden team — made up of many experienced former government officials — has sent out readouts of all of the calls, which help with record keeping. They are making an effort to formalize the process and will use State Department resources when they are available, said a source familiar with the unfolding situation.

This is a stark contrast with the transition between the Obama and Trump administrations. At the time, President-elect Trump opted not to use State Department resources. Instead, he made his calls out of Trump Tower and resisted using the government support and coordination system, which meant that translators and staff sat waiting without any work while Trump made calls on his own, a State Department official told CNN at the time.

At any other point since Biden left the White House, he would have been able to call into the State Department operations center to place a call to a foreign leader, State Department officials told CNN. Former presidents and vice presidents are allowed to use the resource whenever they wish. But now, as he is President-elect, Biden is being prevented from using that facility by the Trump administration.

  • Austrian court confirms end to Eurofighter fraud investigation

Vienna prosecutors upheld a decision to end a criminal probe into alleged fraud by aviation and defence group Airbus and Eurofighter in connection with a two-billion-dollar (€1.7 billion) fighter jet purchase in 2003, the counsel for Austria said Wednesday evening.

A criminal complaint brought by Austria’s Defense Ministry in 2017 prompted the investigation.

A lower court ordered an end to the probe in April, which the appeals court supported on the grounds that Austria had not provided enough of its own evidence after spending three and a half years investigating for fraud, the office of Austria’s chief legal counsel Wolfgang Peschorn said in a statement.

“With that, all criminal investigations in Austria that were initiated as a result of the criminal complaint in 2017 on suspicion of fraud in connection with the Eurofighter purchase have now been brought to an end, ” the statement said of the court ruling dated November 4 and communicated a week later.

While Peschorn said the ruling must be accepted, he disapproved that it runs counter to decisions by German and US legal authorities.

    EU countries probe Airbus

The ruling is a blow to Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner, who had threatened a lawsuit against Airbus, which holds a major stake in the Eurofighter company.

Tanner had also threatened to reverse the acquisition of Austria’s 15 Eurofighter jets, on suspicions that the government paid €183 million too much — as kickbacks to middlemen were priced into the contract.

Austria’s 2017 complaint against Airbus and the Eurofighter consortium alleged they had misled it about the price, deliverability and features of the jets.

In February, Airbus was ordered in Germany to pay $81.25 million in penalties for dubious money flows related to the Austrian aircraft deal.

In January, Airbus announced it had agreed to settle corruption investigations probes in the US, France and the UK, resulting in total penalties of just under €3.6 billion.

The Vienna appeals court has not yet commented on the ruling.

  • Lockdown’ named Collins dictionary’s word of the year for 2020

As world governments spent the majority of 2020 trying to contain the coronavirus pandemic, Collins dictionary on Monday made “lockdown” its word of the year.

Collins said the word, which it defines as “the imposition of stringent restrictions on travel, social interaction and access to public spaces” was chosen because it is a “unifying experience for billions of people across the world.”

Six out of 10 shortlisted words were related to the pandemic including “coronavirus,” “self-isolate” and “social distancing.”

More than 50.2 million cases of the novel coronavirus have been recorded worldwide, and over 1.2 million people have died, according to the World Health Organization.

Collins said it registered over 250,000 usages of “lockdown” during 2020, against only 4,000 the previous year.

Other words that made the shortlist are TikToker, which Collins defines as “a person who regularly shares or appears in videos on TikTok,” a video-sharing app.

The word “BLM,” short for “Black Lives Matter,” also made the shortlist.

Collins defines it as “a movement that campaigns against racially motivated violence and oppression. BLM started as an online movement sparked by the killing of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012 in the United State.

  • EU silent on West Africa’s political crises

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara should not have even been on the ballot. But the already two-term leader wanted a third stint in office, and through a legal loophole, Ouattara stood for re-election. Despite bitter opposition and risking peace in the Ivory Coast, the ploy worked. The Ivorian election commission said Ouattara won a staggering 94% of the vote, boycotted by the opposition.

Ivory Coast’s political crisis is far from over. The opposition has refused to recognize the election results, and violent protests have already resulted in deaths.

The European Union has hardly reacted. The powerful bloc said it had taken note of the results, according to foreign minister Joseph Borrel. “The EU expects all parties involved to contribute to calming the situation and resuming dialogue,” Borrel said rather pleadingly while urging “reconciliation through concrete measures.”

Words of warning, but no action

If the EU’s inaction seems familiar, it’s because it is. In 2020, Guinea’s 83-year-old President, Alpha Conde, had the nation’s constitution changed, stood for election, and won. There too, violent protests and accusations of voting manipulation were rife. But Brussels had only words of warning for Guinea even though the election’s credibility was in question.

Events in Nigeria have received similar treatment. The government is under increasing pressure as primarily young people led mass protests against suppression, police violence, and state corruption. Police have responded brutally, leaving at least 12 people dead so far. And still, the EU has remained silent.

    Brussels bets on regional solutions

Many people in affected West African countries are dismayed at the EU’s apparent passivity. “This indifference shows the international community doesn’t want to get involved beyond a certain point,” says Ramadan Diallo, a political scientist at the University of Sonfonia-Conakry in Guinea.

“We will have to resort more to regional resources to solve our problems. We can’t expect anything from this international bloc, based on the EU’s current attitude,” Diallo told DW.

The EU does get involved in African crises, counters Robert Kappel, a scholar specializing in economy and politics in Africa. He points to training programs for local and regional military forces in Mali. The EU also backs a regional unit hoping to defeat extremists in the Sahel, he says.

According to Kappel, the EU is publicly shying away from the disputed election in the Ivory Coast for a simple reason. “The EU entrusts regional authorities such as ECOWAS to solve the crisis,” Kappel told DW.

ECOWAS has intervened in numerous political crises in West Africa, such as in Mali in 2013 and The Gambia in 2017. The EU intervening in Africa is no longer constructive, Kappel says. For example, some African governments see the International Criminal Court as an instrument to preserve Western and European interests on the continent.

    EU working behind the scenes?

Behind the scenes, it’s a different story, says Thilo Schöne, Ivory Coast’s country representative of Germany’s Friedrich Ebert Foundation, associated with the Social Democrat Party.

“The EU is one of the decisive actors in mediation efforts between the government and the opposition,” Schöne said. “In fact, ambassadors from several EU member states have been active in talks with the Ivorian government,” Schöne told DW.

The EU Commission and other member states have issued a rare foreign policy statement on the situation. The EU also sent election observers, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the mission was considerably smaller than in other elections.

Schöne said the EU finances substantial reports on the elections and peacekeeping missions. Still, the EU wants to stay out of internal conflicts and avoid taking sides as a Western power.

    At arm’s length

This is a policy change the EU seems keen on embracing. In March, the EU Commission introduced a new Africa Strategy. It referenced peace and security on the African continent. The strategy requires an equal partnership, Robert Kappel said. African governments will have to take more responsibility.

“There is much more emphasis now on supporting African institutions, the military, and civil society. This is a departure from military interventions,” Kappel said. This move came after a string of unsuccessful military interventions over the past few years.

The EU’s new approach is urgently needed, according to Kappel, because for Africa to achieve peace and safeguard democracy, African institutions need to be strengthened.

  • October inflation hits 10.1%

The October 2020 inflation rate was 10.1 percent, 0.3 percentage point lower than what was recorded last month, the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has announced on Wednesday, November 11.

According to the GSS, the month-on-month inflation between September 2020 and October 2020 was 0.2 percent.

This contrasts with the negative month-on-month inflation that was observed in the previous two months.

However, this 0.2 percent is still less than observed either pre-Covid or in the months since Covid-19, the GSS added.

On average month-on-month inflation between April to July 2020 was 0.9 percent and in the six months prior to Covid-19 month-on-month inflation rate was 0.7 percent.

Again, just two of the 13 divisions had higher-than-average inflation rates Housing, Water, Electricity and Gas (20.2%) and Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages (12.6%).

At the regional level, the overall year-on-year inflation ranged from 1.6 percent in the Upper West Region to 15.2 percent in the Greater Accra Region.

In Greater Accra, the difference between Food (14.0%) and Non-Food inflation (16.0%) was just 2 percentage points, while in Ashanti Region this difference was 13 percentage points (17.6% compared to 4.6%).

On a month-on-month basis, Northern Region recorded the highest inflation (1.1%) and Upper West the lowest (-2.4%).

    On average, rural areas showed a higher month-on-month (0.3%) but lower year-on-year inflation (8.8%) than urban areas (0.2% month-on-month and 10.5% year-on-year).

The Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages Division recorded a year-on-year inflation rate of 12.6%. This is 1.4 percentage point higher than in August 2020 (11.2%).

This higher inflation rate for Food translates into Food having a higher contribution to overall inflation. Food contributed 54.7% to the total inflation and thus is still the predominant driver of year-on-year inflation.

Within the Food Division, Vegetables (24.9%) was the subclass with the highest rates of inflation. This high inflation for Vegetables is explained by the relatively low index for Vegetables back in October, 2019.

Compared to both September and November 2019, inflation for Vegetables would be closer to the numbers reported in the last months of around 17%. Consonant previous months, month-on-month inflation for Vegetables was negative (- 1.6%). Overall month-on-month Food inflation was -1%.

In contrast to Food inflation, Non-Food inflation decreased. Year-on-year Non-Food inflation came in at 8.3%. This is the lowest rate since April 2020.

Month-on-month Non-Food inflation was 0.3%. Three Divisions had higher month-on-month inflation between September and October 2020 than on average was recorded for these Divisions in the months before the Covid-19 pandemic.

The other ten divisions showed lower than average rates of month-on-month inflation.

  • GHS to begin Phase B of yellow fever vaccination exercise

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is to begin Phase B of yellow fever Preventive Mass Vaccination Campaign (PMVC) to immunise the public against the disease in two districts of the Volta Region.

The one-week exercise is slated to start from November 12 to 18, 2020 in Akatsi North and Agotime-Ziope and would be carried out in 85 districts in 14 regions throughout the country.

Mr Anthony Mawuli Pani, Volta Regional Coordinator, Expanded Programme of Immunisation (EPI) disclosing this at a media briefing in Ho said 42,683 and 36,721 people were expected to be immunised in Akatsi North and Agotime-Ziope, respectively.

He said the objective of the exercise was to increase the population immunity against the disease and to protect susceptible older age groups in selected high-risk areas.

He said according to the World Health Organisation the vaccine was for a lifetime and would be administered to persons between 10 and 60 years, disclosing that an estimated number of 200,000 cases of yellow fever and 30,000 deaths annually worldwide had been recorded.

Mr Pani said 85 percent of people, who suffered from the disease might be asymptomatic, while 15 percent severely affected with fatality up to 50 percent, therefore “vaccination is the main stay.”

The Coordinator noted that the vaccination was not a specific treatment but rather to manage conditions of the disease for a better recovery.

Mr Pani said pregnant women would not be dosed during the exercise because the vaccine could lead to a defect in the child.

Madam Patricia Mawufemor Baku, Regional Health Promotion Officer, called on the public to avail themselves to be vaccinated and offered maximum support to the authorities undertaking the exercise to achieve the desired objective.

She said all COVID-19 preventive protocols would be strictly observed for the safety of the public and the health staff, urging the public to continue to abide by all the necessary protocols so that “together we can end this pandemic.”
