  • Hackers reportedly break into mobile money system to steal unspecified billions belonging to Airtel, MTN, Stanbic and others

Mobile payment service providers and digital payment systems are counting billions in lost cash after hackers hit a third party payment technology company.

Daily Monitor could not readily establish the extent of the theft but sources who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter said billions of shillings were lost and that the hack extends beyond telecoms and banks to utility payment systems, among others that use Pegasus Technologies as a transaction aggregator.

MTN and Airtel, which control at least more than 90 per cent of the mobile money market hold escrow accounts with Stanbic Bank and the two telecoms are believed to have been the biggest victims of the hack.

In a joint statement Monday, signed by MTN, Airtel and Stanbic Bank the three companies said there had been a system incident in which hackers had accessed systems of a third party service provider (Pegasus Technologies) thus impacting all bank to mobile money or wallet transactions.

The incident, which is believed to have started last Thursday and gone through the weekend, yesterday forced mobile money service providers to suspend bank to mobile money or wallet transactions.

“Stanbic Bank, MTN and Airtel inform the public and their customers that on Saturday, a third party service provider experienced a system incident which impacted bank to mobile money transactions. All bank to mobile money [or] wallet services have since been temporarily suspended,” the statement read in part.

Get the latest in African news delivered straight to your inbox

However, the companies indicated that “the system incident has had no impact on any balances on both bank and mobile money accounts”.

Police on Tuesday told Daily Monitor they had launched investigations into the alleged theft.

CID spokesperson Charles Twine, said they had been briefed about the incident but were still analysising the extent of the hack.

“We have commenced investigations today. However, we need some time to dissect the matter,” he said.

Al though no details have been provided, the hackers are believed to operate from Eastern Europe with collaborations in the local systems.

The incident that is believed to involve a number of other companies has Pegasus Technologies as the link.

The technology company is an aggregator for inter mobile money service thus it links mobile money services between MTN and Airtel.

Pegasus also provides financial services for Stanbic Bank’s mobile banking platform, FlexiPay.

  • Nigeria needs to be restructured – Lawyer

A Nigerian lawyer has said that President Muhammadu Buhari must look to restructure Nigeria in other to drive the needed economic and financial independence the country requires to succeed as the giant of Africa.

Speaking to MyNigeria.com in an exclusive interview, Vice President, Synergies Institute-Ghana, Mr. Ogochukwu Nweke opined that the concept of minority and majority ethnic groups in the country must be scrapped. He further stated that the idea has the tendency of bringing division amongst the more than 700 ethnic groups in the country.

He believes de-centralizing the channels of power to its barest minimum is what the country needs, adding that major players and stakeholders must also question how Nigeria got to the point it is in now.

“First thing we have to do is restructuring and let me go back to why Nigeria became a country in the first place. I think we should ask ourselves very important questions and go back to that point,” he quizzed.

“Now we have over 700 ethnic groups in Nigeria and right now I don’t even believe in the concept of minority and majority groups anymore because people are now looking at themselves as nation-states based on their history and we need to all come together, sit down and discuss the issues very very clearly and give power to these units and make the center a bit weaker than it is right now,” he said.

“The center is too-too powerful and that will continue to bring about the issue of people wanting their own people to be in the center without paying attention to some of the issues that should drive the society forward.”

  • CDC: Coronavirus spreads more than six feet

Coronavirus is now airborne, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

There is evidence that under certain conditions, people with Covid-19 could infect those who are more than six feet away, CDC says in its updated guidelines.

The conditions listed include “enclosed spaces that had inadequate ventilation” and when an infected person is “breathing heavily, for example while singing or exercising”.

The American health body says some infections can be spread by exposure to virus in small droplets and particles that can linger in the air for minutes to hours.

It likened this update to how infections like tuberculosis, measles, and chicken pox spread.

This update states that reports show that those with Covid-19 infected others shortly after leaving an area.

“Under these circumstances, scientists believe that the amount of infectious smaller droplet and particles produced by the people with Covid-19 became concentrated enough to spread the virus to other people,” the CDC statement read in part.

The World Health Organization says the main way the virus spreads is through close contact with virus-containing droplets – large and small – that are emitted when someone coughs, sneezes, sings, talks or breathes.

When people are in proximity, within six feet, they are exposed to the whole spectrum of spray that can cause infection, WHO says.

To avoid further spread of Covid-19, people have been advised to wear masks when in public settings, observe social distancing of at least two metes apart and sanitise.

  • Keeping coronavirus at bay in Senegal

Despite only having seven doctors for every 100,000 people, Senegal has been widely praised for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic. The BBC’s Mayeni Jones and Naomi Scherbel-Ball look at how the country has managed to keep Covid-19 in check.

“When the first case came, we were very anxious and I was angry because it was an imported case,” says Dr Khardiata Diallo, who co-ordinates the epidemic treatment centre at Fann Hospital in the capital, Dakar.

“We worried that we lacked equipment, for the treatment of coronavirus there were just 12 beds with limited oxygen supplies for the whole country.”

That was in late February when a Frenchman had returned to Dakar from a skiing holiday with a fever, sore throat and headache.

He was Senegal’s first case of Covid-19, the second reported case in sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr Diallo, who was part of the team that treated the country’s single Ebola case during the West African outbreak of 2014 as well as other cholera outbreaks over the last 15 years, knew they needed to act quickly to contain the pandemic.

    Free 24-hour testing

Her colleagues at the prestigious Institut Pasteur in the Dakar, which in February was one of just two laboratories in Africa that were able to test for coronavirus, trained staff from dozens of other countries on how to test.

By April, 43 countries on the African continent were able to diagnose Covid-19 effectively.

Today the lab in Dakar’s central Plateau district has a 24-hour operation and testing has been expanded across the country.

Tests for those with symptoms are free and results are released in eight hours.

While there have been concerns over low testing rates across the continent, the Africa Centre for Disease Control is supporting countries to ramp up testing levels and there are hopes that cheap self-testing diagnostic kits could help that effort.

The Institut Pasteur has been crucial to this effort, with its chief virologist Amadou Sall partnering with UK-based firm Mologic to develop two home test kits.

Dr Sall says the manufacturing of the antibody test has already begun and they should be released in the coming weeks.

It will work like a pregnancy test, costing close to $1 (£.80) with results in just 10 minutes.

The home test that will show if someone currently has coronavirus has been delayed and is now being validated by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, but there are hopes it will still be out before the end of the year.

Higher levels of testing should also help with early diagnosis.
