  • Brian Oddei provides ‘three assists’ in Sassuolo’s victory over Cagliari

It was a cagey encounter between Sassuolo and a technically gifted Cagliari side in matchday three in Italy’s Primavera division last Saturday.

And once again it was the Ghanaian youngster, Brian Oddei who stole the show with a memorable performance after providing three decisive assists to teammates to ensure a third straight victory for Sassuolo.

Brian’s first assist came in the 13th minute after Cagliari took the lead just three minutes into action. Oddei engaged Cagliari defender Michelotti in a mismatch on the right flank and crossed to the far post for teammate Manarelli to equalize.

The Neroverdi struggled to contain the attacking flow of the visitors as they conceded right before the break. In the second half, Cagliari extended their lead after converting from the penalty spot. But the home side managed to pull one back to make it 2-3.

Brian Oddei took over the key phase of the game six minutes later, with an inswinger from a set-piece for Andrei Marginean to thump home the header to restore parity. In the 94th minute, the Neroverdi once again found the net after the assist king, Oddei, cut inside to send a cross to the far post for the Ferrara to put the game to bed.

This takes Brian’s assist tally to four, and a goal in three games for Sassuolo this season. The creative attacking winger registered eight assists for teammates last season.

  • Secessionism likely to increase, be brutal in response IPEG to government

The Institute for Peace and Governance (IPEG) has asked the government to exercise force in dealing with the rise of separatist agitations by the Western Togoland/Secessionist Group, whose activities constitute a challenge to the existence of Ghana as a state.

A statement issued and signed by Justin Bayor, Programme Director of IPEG, noted that there is most likely to be an increase in the number of such attacks from now till December 2020 and beyond.

The attacks will most probably be centered on state infrastructure/installations as well a property, with minimal deaths and injuries, he said.

These attacks may be concentrated on installations within Western Togoland in the beginning, Mr Bayor continued.

He said the activities of the secessionists will eventually graduate with time into violent activities with mass destruction and mass murder as the object within Western Togoland.

“The violent activities of the secessionists will then assume dimensions to cover other parts of the country, beyond Western Togoland territory.

“We recommend that the State employs its resources to ramp-up its intelligence gathering capabilities, key to repulsing them, so as to prevent the secessionist group from reaching its projected evolvement.

“The State harnesses its Influence, Authority and Capabilities, irrespective of Election 2020 and whichever government is in power, to deal mercilessly with all persons identified as being directly involved in the activities of this group(s) because they are in the process of changing to domestic terrorists.

“The State, led by the Government, should project force and might in their response so as to give re-assurance to Ghanaians on their ability and capacity to deal with the situation. This will halt the civilian population from taking up arms to defend themselves against this group(s).”

  • Semenya ‘up for fighting court decision’

The lawyer for South African athlete Caster Semeny has said she is “up for further fighting” after she lost her appeal in Switzerland last month against the restriction of testosterone levels in female runners, AFP news agency reports.

Semenya is not allowed to compete in events between 400m and a mile without taking testosterone-reducing drugs, following a 2019 rule change by governing body World Athletics.

Lawyer Gregory Nott told AFP that the runner was prepared to go to the European Court of Human Rights to challenge the ban. That process could take a few months, he added.

Athletics’ governing body brought in a rule that athletes with differences of sexual development (DSD) like Semenya must either take medication in order to compete in track events from 400m to the mile, or change to another distance.

Athletes with DSD have higher levels of natural testosterone, which World Athletics believes gives them a competitive advantage.

  • UN peacekeepers warn of fresh rebel violence ahead of vote

Major Ashif is tense as he watches from the turret of his armoured vehicle as the muddy road in front of him slowly unwinds.

His is the lead vehicle in a UN escort shepherding a convoy through northwest Central African Republic (CAR), one of the world’s poorest and most violent countries and the thick undergrowth on either side of the road is perfect for an ambush.

And, in line with the CAR’s tortured history, those likely to carry out any attack are members of an armed group that has signed up to a peace deal.

The militia calls itself the 3R, from the words in French meaning “Return, Reclamation, Rehabilitation”.

One of the most powerful rebel groups in the country, the 3R claims to defend the Fulani — a cattle-herding community also called the Peul.

In February last year, the 3R’s chief, Sidiki Abass, joined the heads of 13 other armed groups to sign an accord in Khartoum on ending the country’s endemic violence.

    Risk of Conflict

But with presidential and legislative elections looming on December 27, the army and the UN force MINUSCA that supports the beleaguered government are bracing for a possible flareup.

In June, MINUSCA carried out a wide-ranging operation to root out 3R rebels from bases in the northwest.

Several hundred militiamen scattered into the bush, where they have continued to mount attacks on the security forces and carry out ransom kidnappings of traders.

Ahead of the vote, Abass has raised the stakes, declaring a ban on security forces and electoral teams from entering “his” territory.

“Last year, I could travel by road by myself, but this is impossible now because of the poor security,” said a judge who was travelling with the convoy that day.

The CAR has had negligible peace since it gained independence from France in 1960.

It plunged once more into bloodshed in 2013, when the Seleka, a rebel coalition drawn largely from the Muslim minority, toppled then-president Francois Bozize, a Christian.

In 2016, after France intervened militarily to quell sectarian massacres, elections were won overwhelmingly by Faustin-Archange Touadera, who is seeking re-election in December.

But Touadera’s reach is small. Militias still control two-thirds of the territory, typically claiming to defend the interests of a given ethnic or religious group.

    Ethnic violence

The 3R was born in 2015 to defend the Fulani, who are Muslim, from a Christian militia called the anti-balaka.

But the convoy’s trip through the northwestern landscape provides telling clues of a more ancient conflict.

The road through the bush eventually leads to a rocky, valleyed region.

Here, the semi-nomadic Fulani and sedentary farmers have squabbled for years over the use of land to graze herds.

All along the roadside lie the empty, ruined homes of farmers, many of them also Muslims, who have fled to neighbouring Cameroon.

The 3R imposes heavy taxes on Fulani herders in exchange for their declared protection.

“We have a mutual arrangement,” said a 3R leader who gave his name as General Bobo, at their stronghold in Koui, more than 500 kilometres (300 miles) from the capital Bangui.

“If you are four brothers, two join the movement and two look after the cattle.”

The group have used the income to buy grenade- and rocket-launchers, US-made M16 assault rifles, mines and improvised explosive devices.

    Mobile foe

The 800 Bangladeshi peacekeepers in the region are involved in a high-risk game of cat and mouse with a group that, from generations of herding, knows every nook and cranny.

Their knowledge of the bush “is better than anyone’s,” said a senior MINUSCA officer. “They move at night and lay low during the day.”

The UN troops have to make do with untrustworthy local informants, rifles without telescopic sights and vehicles battered by the CAR’s poor roads.

Added to this is a dispiriting sense that the military are powerless to haul the country out of a political and social quagmire.

Despair is also felt within the Fulani community.

Sabi Mandjo, the descendant of a line of Fulani princes who represents the community in distant Bangui, said many recruitments to 3R were “forced.”

“The Fulani are fed up but don’t know where to go or what to do,” he said.

Sedentary farmers in the northwest, for their part, feel they are chaff caught up in the CAR’s whirlwind of violence.

Asha Salamatou is president of a women’s association in Bocaranga, a town just outside Koui.

A Christian married to a Muslim, she has repeatedly tried to mediate to end the violence, sometimes at the risk of her life, but inevitably in vain.

“It’s alway the same — we are the ones who pay the price,” she said. “All we want is to live in peace.”

  • Kenya lost coronavirus billions to corruption – Audit report

Kenya lost 2.3bn Kenyan shillings ($21m; £16m) during the procurement of Covid-19 items, according to a recent audit report.

The Auditor General, Nancy Gathangu, said managers at the state body responsible for purchases, the Kenya Medical Supply Authority (Kemsa) violated procurement rules leading to loss of public money.

The government ordered an investigation following a public outcry.

Kemsa has denied that any money was stolen.

The audit report says that Kemsa bosses colluded with companies that were given contracts. Some of the companies were registered around the time the country recorded its first Covid-19 case.

Items were overpriced and some procured in excess and are still at the Kemsa warehouses.

It says the state body also diverted money meant for the universal health coverage programme and purchased Covid-19 items without approval from the ministry.

The auditor general recommended for an independent audit of the transactions. She also urged investigating agencies to probe any criminality in the procurement process.

The report comes after local media reported that Covid-19 donations from Chinese billionaire Jack Ma were stolen, diverted and sold instead of being distributed.

  • WHO Africa chief condemns ‘sex abuse’ by aid staff

The World Health Organization’s regional director for Africa, Matshidiso Moeti, has said allegations that aid workers sexually abused women while tackling an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo are “heartbreaking”.

She said she will ensure a “timely, fair and transparent investigation” and that those found to have been involved will face serious consequences.

Dr Moeti said she would ensure mechanisms of reporting such acts are corrected:

A year-long investigation by two agencies revealed that aid workers who identified themselves as WHO staff sexually abused women in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The New Humanitarian and the Thomson Reuters Foundation spoke to 50 local women who were allegedly plied with drinks, “ambushed” in hospitals, forced to have sex, and two became pregnant.

The allegations cover the period between 2018 and March this year.

  • 10 years after UN report exposes grave crimes on Congo

Ten years ago , the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights published the report of its human rights mapping exercise on Congo.

The report covers the most serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law committed in the country between March 1993 and June 2003.

Reportedly, more than 4million Congolese died as a direct or indirect result of the conflicts, more than 40,000 girls and women were victims of sexual violence and around three million people were displaced.

But none of the crimes have been brought to trial, an account that has been strongly denouced by the Congolese citizens , such as Dr Denis Mukwege, the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

The report documents 617 violent incidents, covering all provinces, and describes the role of all the main Congolese and foreign parties responsible – including military or armed groups from Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, and Angola.

The mapping exercise was conducted with the support of the Congolese government. However, the Congolese justice system has neither the capacity nor sufficient guarantees of independence to adequately ensure justice for these crimes according to Human Rights Watch.

  • Tunisia signs 10-year military deal with U.S

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper signed a 10-year military cooperation deal with Tunis Wednesday during his first stop on a regional tour, hailing US-Tunisia collaboration over the conflict in neighbouring Libya.

The past decade has seen growing cooperation between the Pentagon and Tunisia, particularly on counter-terror training and securing the North African country’s long border with Libya, where jihadist groups operate and world powers back rival sides in a complex war.

“We look forward to expanding this relationship to help Tunisia protect its maritime ports and land borders, deter terrorism and keep the corrosive efforts of autocratic regimes out of your country,” Esper said in a speech after meeting President Kais Saied.

Speaking at a cemetery in Carthage housing the remains of over 2,800 American soldiers, mostly killed in World War II, he warned of the worldwide threat posed by “violent extremists”.

Esper also accused US rivals China and Russia of continuing “to intimidate and coerce their neighbours while expanding their authoritarian influence worldwide, including on this continent.”

He said Moscow and Beijing’s “malign, coercive, and predatory behaviour” aimed to “undermine African institutions”.

Washington in 2015 classified Tunisia as a Major Non-NATO Ally, allowing for reinforced military cooperation.

The two sides regularly hold joint exercises, and since 2011 Washington has invested more than $1 billion in the Tunisian military, according to the US Africa Command, Africom.

The deal signed Wednesday, full details of which have not been disclosed, lasts a decade and covers training and after-sales service of sophisticated American weapons, said officials in Esper’s entourage.

Tunisia in 2016 denied a Washington Post report that it had allowed the US to operate drones from its territory for missions in Libya against the Islamic State jihadist group.

But a court martial in 2017 in a case of sexual harassment by an American officer, reported in the US defence press, publicly confirmed the presence of an American squadron operating drones from within a Tunisian base in the northern region of Bizerte.

    New US interest

The US has “regained interest” in longtime allies Tunisia and Morocco, Tunisian analyst Youssef Cherif said, citing the growing clout of jihadist groups in Libya and the Sahel region since the fall of former Libyan dictator Moamer Kadhafi.

“But Tunisia does not seem to have given its approval to use its airspace and its territory to conduct attacks,” he told AFP.

In May, the head of Africom said the US would send more troops to the country in light of the deteriorating situation in Libya, triggering an outcry in Tunisia.

Africom later clarified that it was only deploying “a small training unit” that would not engage in combat missions, and the Tunisian government said there were no plans for an American base in the country.

Esper also met his Tunisian counterpart Ibrahim Bartagi and gave him a replica of a pistol belonging to George Washington, a military leader who became the first president of the United States.

Presenting the gift, Esper said it was to remind Bartagi of the “importance of the civilian control of the military, the importance of an apolitical military.”

Esper was set to visit neighbouring Algeria on Thursday, becoming the first US defense secretary to do so since Donald Rumsfeld in 2006.

Esper will then head to Morocco, the other US Major Non-NATO Ally in the Maghreb region.

  • ECOWAS hints at sanctions removal – Mali presidency

The West African regional bloc Ecowas has “hinted” that sanctions against Mali “could soon be lifted”, a tweet from the office of Mali’s interim president says.

Ecowas imposed the punitive measures after the military overthrew President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta in August.

It had demanded the resumption of civilian rule, but despite a civilian president, Bah Ndaw, and prime minister, Moctar Ouane, being appointed, the sanctions are still in place.

Earlier this week, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari said there were still some “grey areas” that needed to be worked out before relations could return to normal.

For instance, Mali’s new vice-president is the former junta leader Colonel Assimi Goita, and Ecowas wants to make sure that he cannot become president.

Mr Ndaw is a former military officer and defence minister.

  • Kenyans react to the planned relocation of ‘iconic fig tree’

Kenyans online have criticised government’s plan to relocate a mature fig tree that is along the planned route of a new highway under that’s construction.

Some are upset about the environmental damage while others are concerned about the cost.

Some Kenyans online joked of how much would be spent in the relocation.

“I hope it won’t cost one billion to do that. I saw Singapore moving trees so easily and effortlessly, you can consult the experts rather than tendering to Escobar wa Kemsa,” Shukry wrote referring to alleged corruption at the Kenya Medical Supplies Agency (Kemsa).

Others wondered why that particular tree was being relocated while others were cut down.

“Why didn’t you do this for all the ‘iconic’ trees you’ve mowed down on this road?” Carol Nyaga wrote.

“Why didn’t you relocate all the other trees especially along Waiyaki way? Me thinks you guys should embark on a massive tree planting campaign,” Israel Otieno tweeted.

The highways authority said the relocation was part of its conservation efforts:

  • South Africa opens borders to African countries, limits others

South Africa will reopen its borders to all African countries from Thursday while barring tourists from around 50 nations with high coronavirus infection rates, the government said on Wednesday.

The continent’s most industrialised economy shuttered its borders at the start of a strict nationwide lockdown on March 27 to limit the spread of the virus.

Restrictions on movement and business have been gradually eased since June, but borders stayed sealed to avoid importing the virus from abroad.

Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said the country would “gradually” open borders, but that restrictions were in place for around 50 countries categorised as high risk include Britain, the US, India, Russia and France.

“Only business travellers with scarce and critical skills, diplomats, investors and professional sports people coming for events from the high-risk countries will be permitted into the country,” she said.

Meanwhile, “travellers from all African countries are allowed,” Pandor added.

The country will reopen some land borders and its three main airports in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg.

All travellers will be required to present a negative coronavirus test taken less than 72 hours prior to departure.

They will be screened upon arrival and asked to install a coronavirus tracing app on their mobile phone.

The travel restrictions will be reviewed every two weeks.

South Africa has been particularly hard-hit by the coronavirus pandemic, with 672,572 infections and 16,667 deaths recorded to date, around half the total number of cases detected on the continent.

The countries with restrictions have a greater number of infections and deaths compared with South Africa, Pandor said.

  • Pastors spotted praying on Accra-Kumasi highway to avert accidents

Some men and women of God were on Wednesday afternoon spotted at Kyekyewere on the Accra-Kumasi Highway praying fervently to God to avert accidents on that road.

These men and women of God, said to be members of the Healing Mountain of God Ministry Church commuted along the Accra-Kumasi Highway and offered prayers also at Asuboi, Teacher Mante, Omenako, Apedwa, Mankrong, Asafo, Ayinasin and Bunso which have been considered as flashpoints for Ghana’s road accident statistics.

Road accidents in recent times have been on the ascendency on those areas and as such, created some fear and panic for passengers and the country as a whole.

The men and women of God were captured praying on anointing oil and salt which they sprinkled on those portions of the Accra-Kumasi road.

In a short interview with the leader of the team who said he was called Prophet Isaac Oppong, Founder of the Healing Mountain of God Ministry, he said the spate of accidents on the road was due to evil spirit implant on that stretch and so God placed on their hearts to do the prayers on it to avert future fatal accidents.

“It is worrying looking at the number of accidents occurring in this stretch of the highway.

“These particular areas is very scary. An evil spirit has taken control of these parts of the road. That is why drivers from Kumasi, Togo driving all the way and end up shedding blood here.”

“It is an evil force hidden under these areas that is why we have taken this step to pray to God to destroy the work of the devil on the road,” Prophet Oppong alleged.

He advised drivers to stop reckless driving and to reduce overtaking and speeding on the highway.

Prophet Oppong also urged the drivers to put away thoughts of family problems when driving and rather focus on their driving so they can reach their destinations safely.

However, in an interview with the Eastern Regional Director of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abdulai Bawa Ghamsah, he said, “accidents or crashes are not acts of God’s.”

“We are dealing with machines made by human beings with rules and regulations on how to use them. So if you default in following the manual of the manufacturer of that machine, obviously, you are going to get yourself involved in what we are seeing on our roads.

“The road engineer tells you how to use his roads, the vehicle manufacturer tells you how to drive his vehicles and the one who gave you the (driving) license told you there are rules and regulations on the road that you have to abide by to be safe.

“Yet the speed limit is 60kmh and we are going 120kmh. How will this be an act of the gods?” Mr Ghamsah postulated.

The Eastern Regional NRSA Director urged church leaders to also spend time using their pulpits to admonish their members to obey traffic regulations and be part of driving.

“They should not just sit in the buses watching movies and laughing, rather, they should concentrate on what the driver is doing.

“Is the driver on a mobile phone? Is the driver over speeding? Is the driver doing very dangerous overtaking? All these things they should tell their congregation.

“They should tell their members that it doe not take only the driver to drive (them) safely to their destinations. They are part of it,” he stressed.

“To the Political Parties, please be on alert and know that the preferred season for social misfits, bandits, hooligans and criminals to run to you has come so that you can offer them your party and political identity to enable them commit their violence in the name of politics. Please do not insulate and cocoon them with your Political identity,” he said.

He stated the Police is not oblivious of the enormous tasks ahead of ensuring peaceful election as the political tensions have started mounting up with seasonal route marches protests, physical confrontations, surprise attacks, destruction of party billboards and posters associated to the election adding that it is well prepared to deal with security challenges.

COP Tetteh Yohuno, however, cautioned the youth, ”not to allow themselves to be used as puppets to foment troubles”

He expressed profound gratitude to government for the exceptional commitment made towards recruitment, training of personnel of the service and equipping the Service ahead of this task.

  • Secessionist attacks: If I panic, the country panics – Akufo-Addo

President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has responded to the recent attacks by some secessionist group in the Volta Region.

In what can best pass for brazen assurance, the president stated emphatically that the country will definitely “deal with them”, since the security agencies are on top of the issue.

The group on Friday, September 25, 2020 blocked some principal roads in the Region and on Tuesday, September 29, some unidentified people believed to be members of the group carried out an arson attack on the State Transport Corporation (STC) in Ho, setting fires to the company’s buses.

The group is demanding to become an autonomous country called ”Western Togoland”.

The actions by the secessionist have become a grave concern to the entire nation with some political figures and socio-economic commentators condemning the group.

Some people have also slammed the President for going silent on the issue.

Visiting the studios of Hello FM in Kumasi on Wednesday, September 30, President Nana Akufo-Addo opened up on the matter.

According to him, he has left the matter in the capable hands of the security personnel, stressing the appropriate institutions are up to task.

He said he has unflinching confidence in the security agencies to handle the case and ensure the perpetrators are brought to book.

He was of a strong conviction that the situation will be well handled by the security agencies.

”I have to be calm because institutions are in place. The security agencies are doing their work. They’ve started already and we’ll see results. If I panic, the country panics. It’s like the COVID-19 disease, if I had panicked, fear would have gripped all of us. But I know the work that God has appointed me to do, if I panic, the entire nation will also panic. That is not the purpose of leadership. I’m supposed to assure people that our country will work. What is happening in the Volta Region in the time of these handful – it’s just a handful of people, these secessionists – we’ll deal with it. I have no doubts about it”

”I trust the security agencies. I trust the Armed Forces. I trust the Police. I trust their leadership. The intelligence agencies, I know they are all working very, very, very hard to make sure that this matter is dealt with as quickly as possible”, he said in an exclusive interview with host King Edward de Slave.

  • Expedite actions against secessionists Small Arms Commission tells government

Board Chairman of the National Commission on Small and Light Arms, Rev Professor Paul Frimpong Manso, has called for swift actions to be taken against the secessionists who besieged Juapong last Friday.

A statement he issued on Wednesday, September 30 commended the security for being able to retrieve the weapons that were stolen from the Aveyime Police station by the group.

“We call on the security agencies and the authorities to expedite actions in fashioning out a lasting solution to this unfortunate situation before it is too late. We believe that the security agencies would continue to perform their duties with the requisite professionalism and ensure high alertness in keeping the Volta region and its citizens safe.

“We also urge the secessionist group to use all lawful avenues available in seeking redress to whatever grievances they might have for a win\win situation. This is because resorting to violence makes all of us losers.

“In fact, armed violence or any form of violence would rather worsen the situation than advance their course.

“Meanwhile the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons commends the security agencies following the intelligence work which led to the discovery of the Police weapons taken from the Aveyime Police Station by the secessionist.”

The group, after blocking major entry points in the Volta Region, attacked two police stations at Aveyime and Mepe, and seized 10 AK47 assault rifles after breaking into the police armoury.

They ransacked the police stations, released inmates in custody, physically assaulted and injured some officers.

The group, subsequently, blocked major roads to the Region and burnt car tyres.

However, a joint police-cum-military enforcement team rescued the police officers who were held hostage.

So far, 31 members of the secessionist group were arrested and, subsequently, airlifted to Accra and in the custody of the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for interrogation.

One person died and several others sustained various degrees of injury during the exchange of fire between the security agencies and the secessionist group.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Mohammed Habibu Tijani, says Cape Coast and Wa will soon have passport application centres.

The new offices when opened will ease the stress of acquiring the identity and travelling document.

According to the deputy minister, migrating passport applications online was a good step to ensure effective service delivery.

Speaking at the second series of a virtual Result Fair in Accra, Habibu Tijani said passport validity has been increased from five to 10 years to conform to international practice.

He said there were few application centres across the country, with each having its peculiar challenge, leading to undue delays in the acquisition of passports and exploitation of applicants by the “goro boys” or the middlemen.

He further reiterated the government’s commitment to make passport acquisition easier for Ghanaians.

As of March 1, 2020, all manual passport application operations were halted, he indicated.

The Ministry directed all applicants subsequently to purchase the online passport application platform from its website; passport.mfa.gov.gh for their applications.

He said with the online application platform (passport.mfa.gov.gh), one would need to create an account and make payment, after which the form will be sent to the email.

  • License Ghanaian banks to provide Islamic products Gatsi tells BoG

Commercial banks in Ghana that are interested in rolling out Islamic products should be given the license by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to do so, Professor John Gatsi, Dean of the Business School at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has said.

Islamic banking is banking or financing activity that complies with sharia (Islamic law) and its practical application through the development of Islamic economics. They mostly provide interest free loans.

As of 2010, Islamic financial institutions operate in 105 countries.

According to the 2016 World Islamic Banking Competitiveness Report, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, and Turkey represented over 87% of the international Islamic banking assets.

A 2006 report by ISI Analytics also lists Saudi Arabia at the top and Iran as insignificant.[203][62] In Qatar, Islamic banking assets were valued at $97 billion at the end of 2017, accounting for nearly 81% of total Islamic finance assets, according to QFC Authority chief executive officer Yousuf Mohamed al-Jaida.

  • Breast milk could be protective against coronavirus – Study suggests

Breast milk may help protect babies from being infected by the novel coronavirus, a new study suggests.

Researchers at a lab in China found that mother’s milk prevented the pathogen from infecting and replicating in cells, even if the child does not have antibodies.

What’s more, it is even more effective than the milk of other animals such as goats and cows.

The team, from Beijing University of Chemical Technology, says the findings support the recommendation from the World Health Organization (WHO) that mothers with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 be encouraged to continue breastfeeding.

For the study, published on pre-peer review site bioRxiv.org, the team exposed human lung and gut cells to SARS-CoV-2.

Next, they analyzed what effect breast milk, which was collected in 2017 – before the pandemic – had on the cells.

Healthy cells were mixed into human breast milk. Then the milk was washed off and the cells were exposed to the virus.

The virus did not bind to or enter most of the cells. Additionally, if it did enter cells, the virus was not able to make copies of itself.

This suggests breast milk can inhibit the coronavirus as it does other viruses such as norovirus and bacteria.

‘SARS-CoV-2 could infect [cells] and the infection could be inhibited by breastmilk (2 mg/ml), which was reported to have anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity,’ the authors wrote.

In a previous study, the same research team found breast milk prevented coronavirus infection in animal kidney cells.

They determined the whey protein, which has anti-inflammatory properties, was responsible for inactivating the virus rather than other proteins such as lactoferrin.

‘Whey protein from human breastmilk effectively inhibited…SARS-CoV-2…by blocking viral attachment, entry and even post-entry viral replication,’ they wrote.

This was also true when milk was tested from those of other animals included cows and goats.

However, the whey from animals suppressed the viral strains by approximately 70 percent compared to the nearly 100 percent of human whey.

A national study is currently being launched by Washington State University to determine whether or not babies can contract coronavirus from breastfeeding.

Limited research has been conducted on this topic up to this point, but the results have been mixed.

Some studies have found no virus in human milk while others have detected viral RNA in just certain milk samples.

For example, at least two studies, one from China and another from the US, found no evidence of SARS-CoV-2 in human breastmilk.

But a report from the WHO found that, of 46 breast milk samples from mothers with the virus, 43 came back negative while three tested positive for particles.

However, the team says that even if viral genetic material is found in breastmilk, it doesn’t mean it’s infectious or can be spread to babies.

The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it is alarmed by the significant deterioration of the national security situation in the Volta Region, following two separate secessionist attacks on residents and installations last week and earlier this week despite earlier threats and clear warning signals.

The secessionist groups insist the Volta region is independent Western Togoland.

Last week, members of HSGF blocked roads leading to the region, hoisted their flags, captured three police officers and exchanged gunfire with security agencies as parts of agitation for their independence.

In the early hours of Tuesday, 29 September 2020, a sister separatist group attacked the STC yard in Ho and burnt two of their buses.

The NDC says the attacks by the groups “are a clear indication of the failure of the government under President Nana Akufo-Addo and the National Security Council which he chairs.”

The party in a statement signed by its National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo bemoaned the silence of the President on the matter.

“While property has been destroyed and lives lost, the people of Ghana are yet to hear a comment by the President condemning these acts of treason and lawlessness, let alone consoling the victims, and taking urgent action as appropriate to restore law and order. This is what Ghanaians expect from their President who incidentally is the Chairman of ECOWAS,” the statement said.

“We do not want to believe that the inaction of the President and National Security Council is deliberate and calculated at achieving a sinister political motive including the suppressing of votes in the NDC strongholds. This is already sufficient apprehension caused by these events that suggest complicity of officialdom to cause fear and human insecurity in that part of the country as a justification for an intimidating security presence the type of which was witnessed during the voter registration exercise only a few months ago,” it added.

The NDC further noted that this sequence of events cumulatively constitutes a threat to national peace, unity, territorial integrity and the sovereignty of Ghana and is, thus, calling for urgent action for the restoration of normalcy.

The party said it is closely monitoring the security situation along the Eastern corridor and the country as a whole and has called on all Ghanaians to rally together to preserve national unity, peace and stability “particularly at this time of the final preparations towards the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.”

  • Police Commander arrested over shady weapons deal with criminal

The Nalerigu Station Officer, Inspector Felix Gbekle, has been arrested for facilitating the illegal acquisition of a gun license for a suspected thief who was standing trial for illegal possession of arms and stealing at the Nalerigu District Court in the North East Region.

In August this year, the North East Police Command began investigations on the suspect, Adam Musah. The police later uncovered an unregistered pump action gun in his house.

Mr Musah was arrested and charged with possessing an unlicensed firearm and alleged stealing and put before the Nalerigu District Court.

As the trial progressed, Musah miraculously produced a license for his gun. The license was given by the Tesano Divisional Police. The prosecution prayed the court for time to examine the license which the Court granted the request.

The Nalerigu Station Officer Inspector, Felix Gbekle was since arrested for facilitating the illegal acquisition of a gun license for a suspected thief who was standing trial for illegal possession of arms and stealing at the Nalerigu District Court.

Investigations into the license revealed that Inspector Gbekle, working with an accomplice in the Tesano Divisional Police, dubiously obtained the license by taking the pictures of the gun, which was serving as an exhibit in the trial, and sending the pictures to one of the police officers in the Tesano Divisional Police command for the license to be prepared and handed to him.

He then took delivery of the license later and handed it over to Musah so that the Court, upon seeing the license may drop charges of unlawful possession of a firearm against him.

But the scheme has been discovered by the North East Police, who are now investigating the Inspector.

Inspector Gbekle was on Monday interrogated at the North East Regional Police Command and he admitted to helping the suspect to procure the license by sending photos to a colleague at the Formed Police Unit of the Tesano Divisional Police Command where he worked formerly.

He has since been detained and shall face further action in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Ghana Police Service and the law.

  • Opoku-Agyemang assures workers of better solutions under NDC

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), says the socio-economic hardships facing Ghanaian workers, especially in the informal sector can be resolved.

“The NDC has provided the solutions before, and we will do it again when given the mandate by the people to return to power,” Prof Opoku-Agyemang said.

Interacting with traders and artisans at a town hall meeting at Twifo-Praso in the Central Region on Tuesday, 29 September 2020 as part of her tour of the area, the former Education Minister described the halt in support facilities for traders and artisans under the present administration as regrettable.

Responding to concerns raised by representatives of hairdressers, seamstresses, tailors, market women, commercial motor riders and drivers associations, she noted that all incentives advanced to the various groups, during the previous NDC administration, would be restored.

In addition, she said the payment of stipends to apprentices would be restored, adding that start-up packages would be provided to enable trainees who complete their apprenticeship to effectively commence their small scale businesses to also create jobs.

Touching on a concern over the deplorable state of the Twifo-Praso market, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang gave assurance that the market would be properly developed as part of the NDC infrastructure development agenda.

“If it comes to building modern markets, you know what we can do because we have the track record,” she said, citing the multipurpose Kejetia market project as an example.

The NDC, she explained, would continue to prioritise the development of markets because of the essential role markets play in the local economies, saying the Twifo-Praso market would not be neglected.

Earlier, the running mate interacted with commercial drivers and commuters at the Twifo-Praso main lorry station, where she assured them of better living condition under the next NDC administration.

  • Techiman to host National Farmers’ Day 2020

The 36th edition of the National Farmers’ Day for this years will be held in Techiman in the Bono East Region on November 6, 2020.

The national event will be held on the theme: “Agribusiness Development under COVID-19 – Opportunities and Challenges”.

Mrs Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, speaking at the launch of the event in Accra, said the choice of the theme was to highlight the new orientation for all actors along the agricultural value chain.

“The challenges and opportunities presented by the onset of Covid-19 pandemic reinforce the government’s priority placed on the agricultural sector. For us in the sector, including fisheries, we are assured that our farmers and fishers can continue to go about their means of livelihood with the support of government and its partners even in times of emergencies,” she said.

She said the country’s agriculture sector was transitioning from subsistence and primary production to that of value addition and agribusiness.

She stated the government’s commitment to the sector’s growth through its flagship programmes such as the Planting for food and jobs, planting for export and rural development.

Mrs Quaye said the Ministry was constructing 12 fish landing sites and fishing harbours in selected communities to improve fish handling and reduce post-harvest losses.

She added that the Ministry was rolling out Aquaculture for Food and Jobs as part of the planting for food and jobs initiative to increase domestic fish production and create decent job opportunities along the value chain.

This, she explained, would create 3,000 direct jobs and 33,000 metric tonnes of fish annually.

Mr Nurah Gyiele, Minister of State at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, said the event was to recognize the immense role farmers played to the country’s growth.

Mr Gyiele, who is also the Chairman of the National Planning Committee, said this year’s National Best Farmer would receive an amount of ¢100, 000 cash prize.

“As a ministry, we exist to ensure that farmers and fishers receive the best services in the form of technical support, inputs and infrastructural facilities to promote their enterprise,” he said.
