  • Let’s invest a minimum of 30% of our reserves in multilateral institutions – Akufo-Addo to African leaders

Let’s invest a minimum of 30% of our reserves in multilateral institutions – Akufo-Addo to African leaders

President Akufo-Addo has suggested allocating 30 percent of Africa’s sovereign reserves, currently held in foreign banks, to be invested in the continent’s financial institutions.

During the Presidential Dialogue on the African Union‘s (AU) Financial Institutions, held on the sidelines of the 37th Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly in Ethiopia, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the importance of strengthening the capital base of institutions like the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Afreximbank.

“We should decide that a minimum of 30 per cent of the reserves of each one of us, should, be invested in the multilateral institutions,” he said, citing the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Afreximbank.

The President emphasized that increasing the financial power of African institutions could significantly contribute to financing the continent’s development and growth.

Currently, many countries hold their reserves in foreign banks, attracting predominantly negative interest rates.

President Akufo-Addo urged African leaders to consider ratifying the decision to designate Afreximbank as a specialized agency of the AU.

He acknowledged the critical role played by institutions like AfDB and Afreximbank, citing their contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The fundamental fact is that, if we find a way that we can increase the financial power of our own institutions, we are in a better place to finance our development,” he echoed.

“These are institutions which are ours, and which we can trust. So, if we can find a way of strengthening them, we strengthen ourselves,” he noted.

While championing global financial architecture reforms, the President stressed the need for a monitoring mechanism to ensure accountability in the utilization of funds invested in African banks.

He called for collaborative efforts among leaders to develop a robust global financial architecture that prioritizes African development and addresses illicit financial flows from the continent.

The recent push by African Union Heads of State and Government for the establishment of an African Monetary Union, including the African Central Bank, African Monetary Fund, African Investment Bank, and Pan-African Stock Exchange, aligns with the continent’s aspirations for economic transformation.

The 37th Ordinary Session of the AU will also witness the launch of the Alliance of African Multilateral Financial Institutions, known as the Africa Club, aimed at fostering collaboration and finding solutions to financing challenges for sustainable economic development in Africa.

  • Ghana’s growth to hit 2.8% in 2024 – AfDB

    Ghana’s growth to hit 2.8% in 2024 – AfDB

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has projected a modest growth rate of 2.8% for Ghana in 2024, a slight improvement from the estimated 1.5% forecast in 2023.

This anticipated growth is expected to be the lowest in West Africa for the year.

The Bank attributes Ghana’s modest growth to the ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts and the impact of high inflation on household budgets.
The disclosure was made on February 16, 2024, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during the presentation of Africa’s Macroeconomic Performance and Outlook for 2024 by the AfDB.

“In Ghana, growth is projected to rise from an estimated 1.5% in 2023 to 2.8% in 2024, with modest growth reflecting the ongoing fiscal consolidation and high inflation weighing on household budget”.

The forecast aligns with the expectations of the Government of Ghana.

The AfDB emphasizes that the ongoing International Monetary Fund program will have repercussions on the private sector and household consumption, leading to limitations on spending. Additionally, it foresees that the prices of goods and services will remain elevated.

In the West African region, Ghana and Nigeria are projected to experience growth below the regional average of 4.0%, with Nigeria’s economy expected to expand by 2.9%.

Meanwhile, Niger is anticipated to record the highest growth rate in Africa for 2024, reaching 11.2%, driven by hydrocarbon production and exports.

Ghanaian woman to embark on ‘washcar-a-thon’ on March 9

Felicity Asantewaa is gearing up to make a splash as she takes on the challenge of a ‘washcar-a-thon’ scheduled for March 9, 2024.

With unwavering determination, Felicity aims to break the Guinness World Record for the most cars washed by an individual in an impressive 8-hour time span.

The unique event will unfold near the Executive Club in East Legon.

Her ambitious pursuit is fueled by a passion for empowering young women in Ghana, promoting gender equality, and highlighting the diverse opportunities available to them.

Felicity aims to demonstrate that women can excel in traditionally male-dominated roles, such as car washing, and hopes to inspire financial independence among young women.

“It’s not about taking over or competing with men, but rather showcasing that women are capable of the same opportunities for a living,” she told the media. “For instance, we now have women driving commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks, engaging in various activities, demonstrating their independence.”

She continued: “I have observed that the car washing job has been dominated by males in Ghana; however, I believe females can equally do this work perfectly. To promote the name of Ghana as well as empower young women out there, I want to demonstrate to my fellow young people that women can also consider the job of car washing to make a living and ultimately gain financial independence.”

Choosing car washing as her avenue for empowerment, Felicity explained, “Though I don’t have a car now, I love cars. I also know a lot about car brands. So, when I thought of empowering young women and promoting Ghana, I chose what I love to do to have an impact in the young women’s world.”

She invites the public to join the excitement at East Legon Go Go Wash premises, near the Executive Club, starting at 7 am. Felicity promises a day filled with fun, Ghanaian music, and giveaways to engage the audience.

Felicity Asantewaa joins the growing list of Ghanaians striving to make their mark in the Guinness World Records. This trend gained momentum in December 2023 with Afua Owusu Asantewaa Aduonum’s daring sing-a-thon and Chef Faila’s record-setting cook-a-thon, adding a new dimension to Ghana’s pursuit of Guinness World Records.

  • Pray I don’t become president – Hassan Ayariga to political thieves

Founder and leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga, has issued a stern warning to corrupt politicians, threatening to deal ruthlessly with those who are not positively impacting the country but rather exploiting its resources.

In an exclusive interview with TV3, Mr Ayariga pointed fingers at both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing them of turning Ghana into a business center.

He asserted his commitment to putting an end to what he perceives as detrimental practices within the political landscape.

“The NDC and the NPP over the years have turned Ghana into a business centre. If you are a political thief pray hard Hassan Ayariga doesn’t become a president, if you’re corrupt pray hard Hassan Ayariga doesn’t become a president.

Mr Ayariga also unveiled his political ambitions for the upcoming 2024 elections, revealing a substantial budget of $100 million.

“My budget for 2024 is 100 millon dollars to win the elections. Any party that will win an election in Ghana this time will spend not less than 50 to 100 million dollars. We are looking at winning to at least 23-25 constituencies,” he added.

He underscored the increasing costs associated with winning elections in Ghana and signaled his determination to secure a significant number of constituencies.

In the 2020 elections, Ayariga contested as the Presidential Candidate of the APC, securing 0.05 per cent of the votes with 7,138 votes. He faced a competitive field with notable candidates such as President Akufo-Addo, John Dramani Mahama, Christian Kwabena Andrews, Ivor Greenstreet, and others.

Looking ahead to his potential presidency, Ayariga aims to address societal issues such as sports betting.

He expressed concern about the youth turning to betting due to high unemployment rates and vowed to make efforts to eradicate and criminalize the practice.

Furthermore, Ayariga pledged to inject vitality into Ghana’s struggling economy by championing a 24-hour economy.

He believes this initiative will bring about a fresh lease of life for the country, offering new opportunities and economic growth.

As the 2024 elections draw near, Hassan Ayariga’s promises and warnings set the stage for a dynamic and potentially transformative political landscape in Ghana.

His ambitious plans aim to tackle corruption, create employment opportunities, and revitalize the nation’s economic prospects.

Trade minister launches business resource centres at Akropong and Dodowa

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahir Hammond, has officially inaugurated two cutting-edge Business Resource Centres (BRCs) in Akropong and Dodowa, located in the Eastern and Greater Accra regions, respectively.

These newly commissioned facilities are poised to invigorate economic activities in their respective regions by enhancing the capabilities of micro, small, and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs).

Additionally, they aim to streamline access to financial services and credit while facilitating market accessibility for businesses.

These BRCs will play a crucial role in supporting ‘One district, One factory’ (1D1F) initiatives at the district level, underlining their significance in sustaining and enhancing the competitiveness of both 1D1F projects and other MSMEs.

Speaking at the ceremony in Akropong, Mr. Hammond emphasized the strategic role of the BRCs in positioning Ghana as a manufacturing hub in the sub-region.

With 142 districts hosting factories as part of the government’s flagship 1D1F program, these centres will provide comprehensive business development services, investment facilitation, and information services to entrepreneurs and enterprises at the district level.

The establishment of these BRCs falls under the Rural Enterprises Programme, a collaborative initiative between the Government of Ghana, the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).

In Dodowa, the Minister highlighted that the Dodowa centre is part of the second batch of 30 newly constructed BRCs across the country. This brings the total number of BRCs in the Greater Accra region to three, with existing centres in Ada and Weija.

Mr. Hammond underscored the collaborative nature of the BRCs, emphasizing their interaction with various business regulatory and financial institutions such as the Registrar Generals’ Department, Ghana Standards Authority, Ghana Revenue Authority, Environmental Protection Agency, and Food and Drugs Authority.

The Minister urged a maintenance culture and called upon traditional leaders and local authorities to collaborate with the centres’ management to ensure the maximum benefit for the community.

In her remarks, Kosi Yankeh-Ayeh, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Enterprise Agency (GEA), urged leaders not to perceive the BRCs merely as buildings but as transformative avenues that will positively impact the lives of residents.

Don’t follow Ofori-Atta’s steps – Murtala tells Amin Adam

Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, has advised the new Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, to exercise caution and refrain from getting entangled in the issues created by the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

Muhammed warns that a day of accountability will come for Ofori-Atta, and Dr. Amin Adam should avoid becoming implicated in the problems left behind.

“My advice to my senior brother is that he should be careful… Ken Ofori has created a lot of mess, he has created a lot of holes. If Dr. Amin Adam doesn’t take the time, he will come and own that mess. If he owns that mess and the day of accountability comes …the law will not mind about the justification he would provide, that he was not there when these were created,” Muhammed stated on the Key Points on TV3 Saturday, February 17.

President Akufo-Addo removed Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta from his position, along with several other ministers. Muhammed emphasizes the potential repercussions of inheriting the challenges left by Ofori-Atta and advises Dr. Amin Adam to exercise caution in his new role.

The reshuffling also involved the reassignment of ministers to different portfolios, with President Akufo-Addo expressing gratitude to the departing ministers for their dedication and hard work during their tenure.

  • Akufo-Addo is one of Ghana’s best presidents – Alfred Thompson

Akufo-Addo is one of Ghana’s best presidents – Alfred Thompson

A member of the communications team for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alfred Thompson, has expressed the belief that President Akufo-Addo will be remembered as one of the best presidents in the 4th republic.

Thompson’s statement came in response to the recent ministerial reshuffle on February 14, 2024, where certain ministers were dismissed and others were reassigned.

Addressing concerns about the timing of the reshuffle, Thompson drew an analogy to a critical moment in a football match and emphasized that even a few minutes hold significance in politics.

“Coming back to your question about isn’t it too late, what is too late? When Ghana was going to be kicked out in the AFCON, how many minutes, in less than 4 minutes, that was when they scored the two. But let me give you even extra; in less than 4 minutes. Anything in politics, even 5 minutes is very dear in politics. If you believe that I have some fresh blood coming in, some energy coming in to make sure that I make a mark that I want to do, I don’t see anything wrong with that.

“… and he can decide even by June to make another reshuffle, he can decide by September to do another reshuffle; it depends on what the president wants and makes sure that he leaves a mark of excellence… and I believe that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be remembered in this 4th republic as the best or one of the best presidents Ghana has ever had!” he claimed during TV3’s New Day programme on Friday, February 16, 2024.

He defended the decision, stating that injecting fresh energy into the government is a positive move. He further noted that the president could opt for additional reshuffles in the future to ensure excellence and leave a lasting impact.

Thompson shared his perspective during an appearance on TV3’s New Day program on Friday, February 16, 2024.

On the same date, President Akufo-Addo made significant changes to his administration by dismissing key ministers in areas such as roads, finance, and health, while reassigning others.

The vacant ministerial positions were promptly filled with new appointees as part of the reshuffle.

  • Health officer allegedly slapped by Tamale Mayor

Health officer allegedly slapped by Tamale Mayor

The Tamale Metro Assembly and Northern Regional Coordinating Council, operating under the Local Government Staff Association, are planning a demonstration on Monday, February 19, 2024.

This comes in response to an alleged assault on a health official by Tamale Mayor, Sule Salifu, who is also the parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Tamale Central Constituency.

The dispute originated from a decision by the Northern regional environmental health officer overseeing staff transfers at the metropolitan health office, Sulemana Yakubu.

Yakubu reportedly transferred 18 staff members, including an acquaintance of Mayor Salifu, leading to a heated confrontation between the two.

According to Rainbow Radio’s correspondent, Prince Kwame Tamekloe, the disagreement escalated to the point where Mayor Salifu allegedly slapped Sulemana Yakubu three times.

“About three weeks ago, they held a meeting at the environmental health office, where Sulemana Yakubu serves as both the Northern Regional Environmental Health Officer and the authority responsible for staff transfers.

“It is alleged that Mayor Salifu was not pleased with the transfer of his loved one, leading to an exchange of words and ultimately, the mayor slapping Officer Yakubu three times,” he said.

“The Northern Regional Minister has expressed disapproval of the mayor’s actions, stating that it is not appropriate…the workers are insisting that they will not feel safe working with the mayor until he issues an apology.

“Despite the Regional Minister’s request for an apology, the mayor has refused to comply,” he added.

The incident took place during a meeting at the environmental health office about three weeks ago.

Despite the regional minister’s intervention, Mayor Salifu has reportedly refused to apologize to the health officer.

The workers are adamant that they won’t feel safe working with the mayor until he issues an apology, despite the Northern Regional Minister expressing disapproval of the mayor’s actions.

Ofori-Atta should have been retained to fix the mess – Gyampo

Professor Ransford Gyampo from the University of Ghana expressed dissatisfaction with the recent ministerial reshuffle conducted by President Akufo-Addo, describing it as a ‘last-minute’ decision.

Speaking on TV3’s Key Points on Saturday, February 17, Professor Gyampo criticized the timing of the changes, stating that it did not align with any conceptual frameworks of reshuffling, and he was not pleased with the outcome.

According to him, the removal of Ken Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister, Prof Gyampo noted the difficulty in assigning blame or praise due to the last-minute nature of the change.

He emphasized the importance of the timing of reshuffling, saying, “If you refuse reshuffling, it means you are pampering incompetence. The periodization of reshuffling is more important than the frequency.”

“It doesn’t satisfy any of the conceptual frameworks of reshuffling. I have not been happy with it.”

He added “If you refuse reshuffling, it means you are pampering incompetence. The periodization of reshuffling is more important than the frequency.”

Regarding the removal of Mr Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister, Prof Gyampo said ” If you do this last-minute change it becomes difficult, now who do we apportion the blame and who do we praise? Even though I also called for the removal of Ofori-Atta I think he should been allowed to stay, because he has spoilt things already.  This reshuffle is more partisan in direction than nation building.”

Despite having called for Ofori-Atta’s removal, he suggested that the Finance Minister should have been allowed to stay, as the reshuffle seemed more partisan than focused on nation-building.

President Akufo-Addo relieved Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta of his portfolio along with several other ministers, including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Francis Asenso Boakye, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, Kwasi Amoako Attah, Hon. Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, Hon. Lariba Abudu, Hon. Dan Botwe, Hon. Freda Prempeh, Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, Hon. Henry Quartey, and Mr. Joseph Makubu. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and Asenso-Boakye were reassigned to Works and Housing and Roads and Highways, respectively.

The reshuffle, announced by the Director of Communications at the Presidency Eugene Arhin on February 14, acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing ministers and wished them well in their future endeavors.

Ghanaian fishermen built ‘Noah’s Ark’ without machinery

In a remarkable feat in 21st century Ghana, a group of bold fishermen from a coastal community built what is now being hailed as a contemporary adaptation of Noah’s Ark, the famed biblical architectural marvel.

While specific details about the location remain elusive, blogger SIKAOFFICIAL has been diligently providing insights into this extraordinary undertaking.

The journey began on January 29, 2024, when he shared a 2-minute video showcasing significant progress in the construction of the immense boat.

The video captures the fishermen, believed to be the builders, meticulously employing basic tools without the aid of advanced machinery to intricately piece together the structure by hand.

The footage highlights the remarkable craftsmanship involved, with a man in the video expressing astonishment at both the size of the boat and the dedication of the builders.

“This is being built by hand. These guys are actually building this boat with their physical hands with no machines at all; with just some primitive tools and hammers and chisels and all that and they are building this boat.

“Look at how they built it. Just check out these details of the boat and what they’ve actually done… this actually blew my mind looking at the size of this boat and these guys are actually building this whole boat with their own two hands…” a man in the video is heard saying.

In a subsequent update on February 16, 2024, SIKAOFFICIAL shared another video displaying the completed boat in the evening.

The fully painted vessel is shown being successfully launched into the sea, accompanied by applause from onlookers and fellow fishermen.

In 2002, he and business partner Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede acquired Access Bank, and under his leadership, it became Nigeria’s fourth-largest bank in 2017.

The acquisition of Diamond Bank in 2018 marked a transformative moment, leading to the birth of Access Holdings in March 2022.

Tragically, on February 9, 2024, Wigwe, along with his wife, son, and Abimbola Ogunbanjo, lost their lives in a helicopter accident in the United States. Abubakar Jimoh, Chairman of Access Holdings, affirmed Wigwe’s legacy of growth and operational excellence.

At the time of his passing, Wigwe held a 9.09-percent stake in Access Holdings, valued at $54 million. • GHS30bn pension funds stuck in government investments – Tesah Capital Limited

GHS30bn pension funds stuck in government investments – Tesah Capital Limited

Currently, an estimated GH¢30 billion from pension funds is tied up in government investments, as disclosed by the Managing Director of Tesah Capital Limited, Eugenia Basheer.

Basheer emphasized that these funds could significantly contribute to the nation’s economic growth if strategically diversified across vital sectors.

Speaking at a forum hosted by Citi TV in Accra, she highlighted the eagerness of foreign countries to invest in Ghana’s pension funds due to their proven benefits.

During the forum themed ‘Clarity in the Chaos: What Lies Ahead for the Ghanaian Economy?’, Basheer expressed concern about a substantial portion of the pension funds, approximately 70 to 80%, being invested in government paper.

She posed a question regarding whether the blame lies with the investors or the pension fund holders for choosing these instruments.

Reflecting on the potential outlined in the Pension Act, Basheer envisioned it as a driver for Ghana’s growth, drawing parallels with other economies where pension funds have fueled development.

She noted that foreign pension funds, even from other African countries, actively invest in Ghana, showcasing the growth and capability of their pension systems.

“Today we have pension funds of over 30 billion, where is it sitting? Unfortunately, I’m sure 70 to 80% is sitting on government paper. There are different sizes to this. Do you blame the investors or the pension fund holders for investing in these instruments?

“The first time I saw the Pension Act before it was passed into law, I thought yes, this is going to drive growth in Ghana because when you look at other economies, that is what has happened. We see pension funds from other economies and even in Africa coming to Ghana to invest here because they’ve grown the pension to the extent that they can invest outside their country,” Eugenia Basheer is quoted by citinewsroom.com.

In light of this situation, the investment expert urged stakeholders in the investment sector to implement measures that would diversify these funds into key sectors of the economy.

This, she believes, would not only stimulate economic recovery but also harness the full potential of the substantial pension funds currently tied up in government investments.

Effutu voter register contains over 20,000 illicit names – NDC parliamentary candidate alleges

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary candidate for Effutu, Dr. James Kofi Annan, has labeled the constituency’s voter register as fraudulent, asserting that it contains over 20,000 names from other constituencies.

Dr. Annan alleges collusion between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the Electoral Commission (EC) to manipulate the register, making it challenging for the NDC to secure victory.

Accusing the NPP of inducing voters with money, Dr. Kofi Annan vowed that the NDC would protest any attempt by non-constituency residents to vote.

During a media address in Winneba, he also accused the NPP of monetizing local support, citing the District Assembly elections as an example.

“It is common knowledge that the Effutu constituency voters register is a fraudulent one which is contaminated by about some 20,000 voters who were recruited by the NPP from other places and this has made it difficult for the NDC to win the seat. The busing of voters from other constituencies by the NPP is heavily monetized and sophisticated and aided by the Electoral Commission.

“Since 2021, the NDC has uncovered thousands of such imported voters but we have not been able to convert them to votes for the NDC because of the heavy money involved and the intensity of financial inducement.”

Deputy National Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Jennifer Queen Oforiwaa, has shared a harrowing incident that unfolded in the streets of Dansoman, recounting how an unknown man jumped onto her car during a fateful evening.

Detailing the event, she said, “It was around 6:30 pm, just two weeks ago. I felt a sudden jolt as someone jumped in front of my car. If I hadn’t acted swiftly, who knows what horrors might have unfolded?”

Expressing her fear as a politician, Jennifer remarked, “As a seasoned politician, I’m familiar with weathering storms, but nothing prepared me for the uncertainty of that moment. Had I panicked and pressed the accelerator, tragedy could have struck. They would even accuse me of manslaughter.”

Speaking on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem, she revealed that she later discovered the incident was an attempt to rob her. Thankfully, bystanders intervened, thwarting the robbery and ensuring her safety.

Jennifer shared her story in response to a tragic accident involving pupils from Ampeah Memorial School in Nkawkaw, where three male students and a female teacher lost their lives in a fatal motor accident on the Kumasi-Accra road.

The accident involved a Nissan Patrol vehicle, reported to be the official vehicle of the District Chief Executive for Atwima Kwanwoma in the Ashanti region, Prince Karikari.

The incident occurred when the vehicle attempted an unauthorized U-turn while driving on the road shoulders from the Accra-Kumasi direction near Nanchia.

Given her past experience with an accident in 2020, Jennifer urged drivers to exercise greater caution to prevent avoidable deaths on the roads.

  • Why punish Chief State Attorney for no crime? – Woyome to GLC

Why punish Chief State Attorney for no crime? – Woyome to GLC

The businessman at the centre of the GH¢51 million Waterville judgment debt case, Alfred Agbesi Woyome, has questioned the rationale behind General Legal Council (GLC) punishing the Chief State Attorney, Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh.

According to Woyome, Mr Nerquaye-Tetteh did no crime, therefore the actions taken against the attorney are unjustified.

The GLC disbarred Nerquaye-Tetteh based on a violation of Rule 2(2) of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 1969 (L.I. 613). This decision effectively bars Nerquaye-Tetteh from practicing law in Ghana for the remainder of his career.

The disciplinary action originates from a 2011 incident where, during his representation of the state in a lawsuit initiated by Alfred Agbesi Woyome, Nerquaye-Tetteh orchestrated the transfer of GH¢400,000 from Woyome to his wife’s bank account. The GLC found Nerquaye-Tetteh’s failure to provide a reasonable explanation for this transfer as grounds for allegations of professional misconduct.

In a notice dated January 31, 2024, the GLC detailed the case, emphasizing the detrimental impact of Nerquaye-Tetteh’s actions on the legal profession’s dignity and reputation.

The notice underscored the unacceptability of such conduct, particularly given Nerquaye-Tetteh’s role as a Chief State Attorney.

Signed by the Judicial Secretary, Justice Cynthia Pamela Koranteng, the notice formally disbars Nerquaye-Tetteh from practicing law and prohibits him from representing himself as a lawyer or offering legal services to the public.

The GLC’s revocation of Nerquaye-Tetteh’s practicing license underscores the gravity of the misconduct and reflects the council’s commitment to maintaining professional standards in the legal field.

In a statement to reporters on Friday, February 16, Woyome denied accusations of bribing the senior state attorney, asserting his law-abiding nature.

He clarified that Nerquaye-Tetteh never handled his file, emphasizing a judgment that absolves anyone claiming illegal payment to Woyome.

Woyome questioned the Attorney General’s continued tarnishing of his image and highlighted that Nerquaye-Tetteh’s involvement was limited, only deputizing in court when necessary, and after government negotiation.

“I want you to understand one thing that I have been law-abiding in this country. I’ve never given a bribe or taken a bribe, because even I’ve never been in a government position neither have I benefited from any government money whatsoever in any government. My brief stake in the government of Atta Mills as a board chairman and also as appointment committee member. Even fuel coupons I never accepted.”

“We have this judgement that bars anybody that says that Alfred Woyome was illegally paid. Bars anybody that says that Nerquaye-Tetteh or anybody that was involved in this transaction from Kufuor’s time to the NDC’s time has done something wrong.

“On what basis is the Attorney General still tarnishing the image of a person for all these years. If you read deeply, you’ll realise that Mr Nerquaye-Tetteh never handled my file. The only time Nerquaye-Tetteh was sent to court was when there was somebody out and he went to deputize and even that one it was after the government negotiation.

“Every payment made was by court order and the decision was taken in the highest arm of government from the castle.

“Every letter and every decision was copied to the then President, Chief of Staff and other people. How then can just a Chief State Attorney take a decision; in some of the meetings he was not even there,” he further explained.

    Background:

The General Legal Council, in a notice dated January 31, 2024, and signed by Judicial Secretary Justice Cynthia Pamela Koranteng, revoked Nerquaye-Tetteh’s license due to professional misconduct.

The council found him guilty under Rule 2(2) of the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 1969 (L.I. 613). Nerquaye-Tetteh oversaw the direct transfer of GH¢400,000 from Woyome to his wife’s account while representing the state in a 2011 lawsuit.

The GLC stated that he failed to provide a plausible rationale for the transfer, adversely affecting the “dignity and high standing of the legal profession.” Nerquaye-Tetteh is barred from practicing law in Ghana.

GWCL resolves water crisis at T.I. Ahmadiyya

Students of T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School will no longer need to venture beyond the campus in pursuit of water, as the Water Company Limited has successfully restored water supply to the school.

This development comes in the wake of reports highlighting the challenges faced by the students and the subsequent impact on their daily activities.

Since Monday, students had been navigating various locations in search of water after depleting the reserves in their on-campus reservoir.

The journey led them to cover several kilometers in search of water around Asokwa and neighboring areas.

Officials from the Ghana Water Company Limited attributed the water distribution shortage to recent intermittent power outages.

However, management has now announced the resolution of the situation, with water flowing through the school’s taps as of Thursday evening.

Akufo-Addo’s reshuffle won’t favor Bawumia in 2024 elections – Political Analyst

A political analyst at the University of Cape Coast, Dr. Jonathan Asante Otchere, has expressed the view that the anticipated ministerial reshuffle by President Akufo-Addo may not be advantageous for the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as the December 7 polls approaches.

Dr. Otchere made this assertion during an interview with Alfred Ocansey, the host of TV3’s current affairs program, Ghana Tonight, on Thursday, February 15.

“When you are conducting a reshuffle, you need to know the theoretical framework that you are operating with. What framework is the President operating under?” he questioned.

“The most important agenda now is breaking ‘eight,’ so how does this reshuffle fit into the breaking eight agenda, and that, for me, I am of the view that it does not,” he concluded.

According to Dr. Otchere, the President missed an opportunity to reduce government expenditures, a matter that has drawn criticism from civil society organizations and the public due to extensive spending and substantial borrowing.

“Probably if you look at the parliamentary section, you could see that it is very political because those who have lost out and those who did not contest they have nothing to lose so why would they [government] keep them, I think that one makes sense,” he added.

He suggested that the Vice President might gain some political advantages on the parliamentary side but not necessarily on the presidential side.

Dr. Asante Otchere highlighted that the decision to replace sitting MPs and ministers of state who lost in the NPP parliamentary primaries was reasonable and would not harm the party’s prospects.

“Perhaps, if you look at the parliamentary section, you could see that it is very political because those who have lost and those who did not contest have nothing to lose, so why would they [the government] retain them? I think that makes sense,” he added.

Dr. Asante Otchere further emphasized the importance of supporting reshuffle exercises with a theoretical framework and questioned the framework the president was operating under.

The Founder and Leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has affirmed his dedication to offering substantial assistance to orphaned and underprivileged children through the social welfare department if elected President in the December 7 polls.

His commitment involves revitalizing the department with essential resources to ensure the provision of crucial social services.

Kyerematen emphasized the significance of establishing market-based support centers that deliver essential services such as education, counseling, healthcare, and nutritional aid to these children.

These centers, he explained, will serve as secure and supportive spaces, addressing not only the material needs but also the emotional and psychological well-being of the children.

Mr. Kyerematen declared his unwavering determination to prioritize the welfare of neglected children if entrusted with the presidency, stating, “Let us come together to ensure that every child, regardless of their circumstances, receives the care and support they deserve. Through compassion and action, we can build a future where no child is left behind, beginning with initiatives rooted in our markets.”

These remarks were shared by Mr. Kyerematen in a Facebook post following his encounter with orphaned children seeking alms at the Bantama market during his campaign tour.

Central figure in the GH¢51 million Waterville judgment debt case, Alfred Agbesi Woyome, has criticized the General Legal Council for the expulsion of senior state attorney Samuel Nerquaye-Tetteh.

This followed the transfer of GH¢400,000 into Mr. Nerquaye-Tetteh’s wife’s bank account.

In a statement to reporters on Friday, February 16, Woyome denied accusations of bribing the senior state attorney, asserting his law-abiding nature.

The Member of Parliament for the Obuasi West Constituency, Kwaku Kwarteng, has offered clarification on his decision to reject the opportunity to serve as a minister in the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

As the former Deputy Finance Minister, Kwarteng was initially considered for a ministerial position during the significant reshuffle in President Akufo-Addo’s government.

Kumasi experiencing power and water crisis

Business operators and residents in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, are expressing frustration and outrage over persistent power outages plaguing the area.

The frequent disruptions in power supply in recent weeks have sparked discontent in the Ashanti Regional capital, raising concerns about the reliability of electricity services in the region.

Areas like Asokwa, Oforikrom, Bosomtwe, and other parts of Greater Kumasi are particularly hard-hit. Complaints include damage to electrical appliances and a negative impact on productivity.

When Asaase News visited TI AMASS Senior High School in Asokwa on Thursday morning, the lack of electricity at water pumping plants forced students to search for water. 15-year-old Pokuaa Nyamekye expressed concern about maintaining good hygiene if the situation persists.

“For someone like me if I have my period and I don’t take my bath I can’t go to the classroom. Some of us have to skip dawn lessons to search for water and this has affected normal life on campus. We humbly pray that this is resolved very soon otherwise things will get worse in the coming days.”

“It started over the weekend and today around 1 am some of us had to hunt for water again”, said another student. “We have come to the court premises for some help. Some are even bathing at the [Kumasi] mall. This is terrible”.

The Ghana National Fire Service, observing the situation, fears more fire outbreaks could occur if nothing is done to address the power outages. DO3 Peter Adai, the Ashanti Regional Spokesperson for the Service, emphasized the importance of safety precautions during power fluctuations.

Efforts to obtain comments from officials at the Electricity Company of Ghana have yielded little results as of the time of this report. However, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) asserts that it is closely monitoring the situation.

The regulator assures that water will be restored by the close of Thursday, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Richard Asiedu, the Ashanti regional spokesperson at the PURC, explained, “Since last Saturday, we realized that most residents in parts of the Greater Kumasi areas have been experiencing water shortage. We reached out to the ECG, and they informed us that they had a cable blast around one of their substations, so they were trying to fix the situation. The situation has affected water supply as the Ghana Water Company also relies heavily on power supply during their operations.”

There is a strong push for an alternative arrangement to avoid disruptions in power distribution in Kumasi, as residents maintain that the situation is taking a toll on their livelihoods.

The Minority in Parliament has insisted that all reassigned ministers must undergo vetting and approval by the Appointment Committee of Parliament.

Opposition lawmakers have served notice of their intention to challenge the reassignments of five ministers at the Supreme Court, emphasizing the need for parliamentary scrutiny and approval in accordance with the constitution.

He stated, “We are demanding that those five ministers he has reassigned must be subjected to parliamentary vetting, and that is the procedure, so they cannot escape parliamentary scrutiny.”

If their demand is not met, the Minority vows to proceed to the Supreme Court for legal interpretation.

Kasoa ritual murder: Accused individual alleges accomplice set him up

One of the teenagers implicated in the alleged murder of an 11-year-old boy in Kasoa for a money ritual has once again denied any involvement in the crime, asserting that his co-accused framed him.

During the cross-examination by state prosecutors in front of Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, the young defendant claimed the entire incident was a setup, emphasizing that he was not close to the boy and had not conspired to murder him.

This statement followed the confrontation with his police caution statement, where he previously stated knowledge of his alleged accomplice.

Under Senior State Attorney Nana Ama Adoma’s questioning, the young defendant insisted that the boy had merely slept at his place the Friday before the incident, suggesting, “I believe it was a setup into which I fell.”

He further disclaimed knowledge of the tools allegedly used in the offense, saying, “I know nothing about the exhibits brought from the crime scene.

Those working tools were there before we got there. And I’m pleading with the court that a fingerprint test be conducted on those exhibits to confirm whether I held any of them.”

He requested a fingerprint test on the exhibits collected from the unfinished building where the victim was killed.

A 15-year-old and an 18-year-old (young offender) face charges of conspiracy and murder in the trial for the 11-year-old boy’s killing.

Prosecutors allege that on March 29, 2021, the accused sought a spiritualist’s assistance for money rituals, involving a sum of GH¢5,000 and a human sacrifice.

On April 3, 2021, they allegedly used the boy for their ritual, luring him into an uncompleted building, where he was fatally attacked and buried with the intent to convey him to the spiritualist.

David Adomako steps down as TOR’s board chairman

The Board Chairman of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), David Adomako, has tendered his resignation, citing recent developments within the refinery as the reason for his decision.

In a letter addressed to the presidency, Adomako expressed concerns about the lack of transparency in the partnership deal negotiations between TOR and Tema Energy and Processing Limited, formerly Torentco Asset Management Limited, leading to discontent among TOR workers.

The General Transport Petroleum and Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU) accused the management and Board of failing to ensure transparency in the partnership deal, resulting in the interdiction of two union executives – Serwah Duncan-Williams and Anthony Koomson.

Adomako, in his resignation letter, stated that he was unable to dedicate the necessary time and energy for a renewed pursuit of a solution due to recent challenges.

He emphasized the need for harmony among staff, management, the board, and other stakeholders for a successful restructuring effort.

The proposed partnership with Torentco, which Adomako sees as crucial for TOR’s revival and financial sustainability, is yet to materialize.

Adomako acknowledged the challenges in securing government financial support for refinery rehabilitation and attracting private sector investment.

He highlighted the board’s instruction to explore alternative strategic options for TOR while continuing efforts to attract investors for rehabilitation.

Adomako warned about TOR’s struggle to secure necessary funding from the government, emphasizing the importance of finding a strategic partner for the refinery’s viability.

Despite his resignation, he expressed best wishes for TOR’s staff and the refinery’s future.

Simultaneously, the National Labour Commission has intervened, requesting the Acting Managing Director of TOR to address complaints from the Workers’ Union concerning the interdiction of the two executives.

  • Let’s not deceive ourselves Amin Adam’s appointment won’t turn the economy around – Seth Terkper

Let’s not deceive ourselves Amin Adam’s appointment won’t turn the economy around – Seth Terkper

Former Finance Minister, Seth Terkper has cast doubt on President Akufo-Addo‘s choice to replace Ken Ofori-Atta with Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam as Finance Minister.

Mr Terkper, expressing skepticism, argues that the timing of this change, occurring during the country’s engagement with an IMF program, might hinder Dr. Adam’s ability to have a significant impact on the economic policies of the president and government.

Following his reassignment, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has pledged to prioritize revenue mobilization to fortify the nation’s finances and meet expenditure goals.

He has also reassured the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of the government’s commitment to the ongoing program, promising alignment with outlined policies and programs in the 2024 budget.

In an interview with Citi News, Terkper highlighted that budget and economic policies ultimately fall under the President’s authority. With the limited timeframe until the next general elections, he expressed concerns about Dr. Adam encountering challenges in implementing substantial policy changes.

Terkper remarked, “We are a country where we could not do a turnaround of the economy, and we were preemptive, with everybody blaming it on COVID-19 and the Ukraine war, where some $6 billion flowed into the economy without the ability to turn it around.”

“This administration is not the only one that has suffered global or domestic setbacks, from droughts or floods to the global financial crisis, and so I think the situation is dire, and so we have to ask ourselves if nine months is enough time to do a turnaround.”

  • Providing cheaper funds to private sectors will boost the economy – Banking consultant to govt

Providing cheaper funds to private sectors will boost the economy – Banking consultant to govt

Banking consultant Dr. Richmond Atuahene has urged the government to provide more affordable funds to private sector players to boost the country’s economy.

Emphasizing that this strategy would contribute to an improved Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and foster economic stability, Dr. Atuahene expressed concern over the risks associated with the government’s continued borrowing, particularly when the private sector lacks competitiveness.

During an Investment Dialogue on Citi TV, he cautioned against relying solely on government borrowing as it might not ensure the country’s economic recovery and could potentially escalate unemployment rates.

Dr. Atuahene urged a shift towards granting the private sector access to more affordable funds to drive economic growth, emphasizing that this approach would enhance GDP, economic stability, and overall prosperity.

“The governor said recently that credit in the private sector has declined in real terms by 10% because the government is just like a snake, this snake, I don’t know its name, it only swallows, swallows. He is taking money. What does he take the money for?”

“Let the private sector have cheaper funds to turn the economy. That is when the GDPs or you are talking about the economy, the stability, and everything will come. But you see if the government is borrowing and the private sector cannot compete then we are crowding out the business. And it is a very dangerous thing. There will be no recovery. And if the economy does not recover, unemployment will be very high. There will be no job creation…The reality is that there is so much unemployment and non-job creation in the country at the moment.”

The Ghanaian pastor and leader of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Osofo Kyiri Abosom, shared his inspiring journey of financing his Senior High School (SHS) education.

Struggling for funds as a young man, he approached the school’s matron with a proposal to supply her with cocoyam leaves (Kontomire) as a means to raise money for his school fees.

Facing the financial hardships, Osofo Kyiri Abosom discussed his situation with the matron, who, understanding his predicament, agreed to the proposal.

“The first day I got to the school I didn’t have a caretaker so I went to see the matron about the situation. I made her aware I come from a village so I can supply her cocoyam leaves (kontomire) to raise money to fund my education which she agreed,” he explained.

“So I supplied her [matron] with three sacks of cocoyam leaves every Wednesday and Thursday for five years till I completed school,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Kingdom FM..

Reflecting on his initial days at school, he recalled not having a caretaker, so he approached the matron to present his plan.

He explained that, being from a village, he could supply her with cocoyam leaves to generate the needed funds for his education, and the matron agreed.

Throughout his academic journey, the pastor relied on the consistent sale of cocoyam leaves for five years. Diligently, he supplied the matron with three sacks of cocoyam leaves every Wednesday and Thursday, sustaining this effort until he completed school.

In an interview on Accra-based Kingdom FM, Osofo Kyiri Abosom shared that despite the financial challenges, he excelled academically and eventually earned a scholarship.

  • It is unfair to jail individuals based on sexuality to preserve family values – Afenyo-Markin

It is unfair to jail individuals based on sexuality to preserve family values – Afenyo-Markin

Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has halted the progress of the anti-LGBTQ bill by presenting compelling arguments aimed at blocking its third reading in Parliament.

Expressing his stance on Thursday, February 15, 2024, Afenyo-Markin asserted that imprisoning individuals based on their sexual preferences would not align with the Ghanaian values that the bill aims to safeguard.

Consequently, his intervention prevented the bill from being passed.

Earlier on the same day, Sam George, a proponent of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, had expressed optimism about the bill’s passage into law by the day’s end.

However, the Effutu MP articulated in Parliament that while he does not outrightly oppose the principles of the bill, he strongly objects to the provision that mandates imprisonment for individuals accused of engaging in or promoting LGBTQ activities.

Afenyo-Markin argued that imprisoning individuals based on their sexual orientation contradicts the objective of upholding Ghanaian family values and ensuring proper human sexual rights.

He emphasized that addressing behavioral issues related to LGBTQ matters requires alternative solutions to incarceration, as he believes imprisonment exacerbates the problem rather than resolving it.

“To jail a person for his/her sexuality will not be the solution in maintaining our Ghanaian family values and ensuring proper human sexual rights,” he stated.

He proposed a thorough consideration of amendments, suggesting the substitution of community service for incarceration.

In his view, punitive measures included in the bill would not contribute to the rehabilitation of offenders. Despite this, Sam George, the bill’s sponsor, rebuts Afenyo-Markin’s argument, contending that it lacks validity.

Adam stated, “Revenue collection will be pursued aggressively. So you are going to see me moving around the revenue centers, the ports, the airport, and the market areas to encourage the staff of GRA to collect more revenue but also to institute a friendly approach to collecting revenue.”

He added, “We have heard that people are being harassed; all these are going to be streamlined so that you have a friendly approach, and also we will get the GRA to introduce a faceless assessment system to ensure that we maximize revenue collection…and to be able to meet our expenditure target.”

President Akufo-Addo nominated Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam as the new Finance Minister, succeeding Ken Ofori-Atta, who served in the position for seven years. The announcement was part of the latest ministerial reshuffle released on Wednesday, February 14.

Despite facing challenges and calls for dismissal from some members of Ghana’s Parliament, Ken Ofori-Atta held the position as Ghana’s longest-serving finance minister. Calls for his resignation were made by around 80 NPP MPs on October 25, 2022, and echoed by the NDC parliamentary caucus in February 2023. However, President Akufo-Addo rejected these calls, urging Parliament to wait until discussions with the IMF concluded.
