Video: Acquitted individuals in Major Mahama case speak out

Two individuals, Bismark Donkor and Bismark Abanga, acquitted and discharged by an Accra High Court in the Captain Mahama murder case, have shared their harrowing experiences since their release from prison.

Both were among 14 individuals arrested seven years ago after the brutal killing of the military officer in Denkyira Obuasi, Central Region.

Mr Donkor revealed that armed soldiers subjected him to severe beatings when they arrested him in his bedroom. Despite being innocent, he endured mistreatment during his arrest. Abanga, an electrician, was arrested at home in 2017 and was shocked to be accused of Captain Mahama’s murder.

Mr Donkor, a cocoa farmer, explained that on the day of the murder, he heard noise in town but stayed home as advised by his wife.

Mr Abanga, hearing unusual noise, was informed by his apprentice about an armed robber being lynched. He returned home after seeing the gruesome scene. Both maintained their innocence throughout the trial, losing their livelihoods during seven years on remand.

Mr Abanga lost his repair shop and cocoa farm, while Donkor had to sell his cocoa farm for defense funds.

The tragic lynching incident led to over fifty suspects’ apprehension, with fourteen facing trial. The jury’s guilty verdict against 12 individuals resulted in life imprisonment, while Mr Abanga and Mr Donkor were acquitted and discharged on January 29, 2024.

Seeing and hearing Ghanaians insult my husband makes me sad – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s wife

The wife of Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Irene Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has shared insights on how she copes with news about her husband, acknowledging the occasional hurt from insults but emphasizing her resilient demeanor.

In an interview on Nhyira FM, she expressed the challenge of waking up to her husband’s name in the news with various comments, but she has developed a tough skin to endure it while maintaining outward calm.

When asked about managing marriage to a politician, she highlighted respect and patience as crucial elements for their successful relationship, recognizing the necessity of sharing a public figure with the nation.

“It is not easy to wake up in the morning and see your husband’s name in the news, with people saying all sorts of things. He is precious to my children, and I am human. I’m sometimes hurt when Ghanaians insult my husband, but I have tough skin to bear it, even though I remain outwardly calm.”

Reflecting on her parents’ marriage, she emphasized implementing the respect her mother showed her father. She advised having a strong mind and a big heart to navigate the diverse challenges of marriage.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the MP for Suame constituency, known for his significant roles in parliamentary leadership, including Minority Leader, Majority Leader, and Minister of State at the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, has decided not to seek re-election in 2024 due to age and terms served.

“My marriage life has been guided by my parents’ marriage. The respect my mother gives to my father is something I implement in mine. Marriage is a journey, and it is not the same pattern. You need a strong mind and a big heart to accommodate everything. Sometimes, you don’t have to react; just have patience, and your husband will reflect.”

Despite pressure to contest, he reaffirmed his decision, stating, “I have spoken and made my stance clear.”

The exiting lawmaker, married with five children, hails from Bremang-Afrancho in Kumasi and holds a BSc in Planning from KNUST (1982), being a development planner, architect, and quantity surveyor.

Ensuring independence for assemblies is vital – ChaLoG President to govt

The President of the Chamber of Local Governance, Dr. Richard Fiadomor, has reignited the debate on the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), emphasizing the need for increased autonomy to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of various assemblies.

Dr. Fiadomor argued that government and political interference in the election and removal processes of MMDCEs makes elections redundant.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, he stressed the importance of independent functioning for successful governance at the assembly level.

He pointed out that while assembly and unit committee members are supposed to be independently elected, they often end up endorsing the president’s nominees with political involvement, contrary to expectations.

In 2019, the Akufo-Addo administration attempted to democratize local government leadership selection, proposing amendments to Article 243 (1) and Article 55 (3) of the Constitution to allow political parties in local-level elections.

“subject to the provisions of this Article, a political party is free to participate in shaping the political will of the people, to disseminate information on political ideas, social and economic programmes of a national character, and sponsor candidates for elections to any public office other than to District Assemblies or lower local government units.”

“We are serious stakeholders and it is just unfortunate that many of the assemblies do not engage with citizens. You have a role to play but the assemblies don’t allow us to play that role.”

However, the lack of bipartisan support for the referendum led to the withdrawal of the reforms.

Despite Article 55(3) granting political parties the mandate for organizing elections, it excludes the election of Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives.

Dr. Fiadomor also criticized the exclusion of citizens in the local governance consultative structure, expressing disappointment in the limited engagement between assemblies and citizens.

I am not that kind of person who promises and doesn’t deliver – Mahama to Ghanaians

Presidential contender John Mahama from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emphasized his commitment to avoiding exaggerated promises for political gain, particularly steering clear of across-the-board salary increases.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Tamale during his ‘Building the Ghana We Want Together Tour,’ the former president stressed his preference for honesty in securing votes.

In addressing pre-tertiary teachers, Mahama stated, “I’ve said that the economy is in a big mess, so, I cannot promise everybody I’m going to increase salary and all that.”

He contrasted his approach with past promises made by President Nana Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party, stating, “I won’t be like those dishonest people who came to promise heaven that they will build factories in every district, they’ll build a dam in every village, I’m not that kind of person.”

While acknowledging the economic challenges, Mahama refrained from committing to a salary increase.

Instead, he acknowledged the difficulties faced by pre-tertiary teachers and proposed solutions, such as providing accommodation in schools to encourage more teachers to reside on campus.

Man who suggested the coup is in America, walking freely – ACP Agordzo

Retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Dr. Benjamin Agordzo, who was recently acquitted in the high-profile coup plot case has revealed that discussions on a WhatsApp platform led to the charges against him and other convicted alleged coup plotters.

In an interview on GhanaWeb TV’s ‘The Lowdown’, ACP Agordzo explained that while he wasn’t part of the ‘Executive Platform,’ he accessed the messages through court disclosures.

He maintained that, in his opinion, the messages did not suggest a coup plot unless there was additional information the court used to convict the alleged plotters.

Mr Agordzo highlighted a member on the platform who suggested the coup and was removed by Dr. Mac-Palm, the accused leader who passed away in 2023.

Surprisingly, the person suggesting the coup has not been arrested and is reportedly in the United States.

“They (the security agencies) alleged that a particular WhatsApp platform, called the ‘Executive Platform’, was where this whole issue was discussed. With the benefit of disclosures, I also had copies of whatever that platform contained. And I can tell you on authority without prejudice to whatever the court has decided… you observed that there was a certain man, who had tried to say something in connection with what they have alleged with the planning.

“And I, the BNI people and everybody who read saw that Dr Mac-Palm was opposed to that person and as a result, he took him (the man) out of that platform. They had a whole quarrel, misunderstanding between them because of what the man said which was also printed and is with the BNI,” he told the host of ‘The Lowdown’ programme, Daniel Oduro.

The retired police officer added, “… the person who suggested that (the coup) up to now we don’t know the person. They could not arrest the person. One lawyer asked about that in court and they said they are making efforts to that effect to get him. The person who made those suggestions has not been arrested. Who is that person? Was he planted on the platform?… where is he? They say he is in the United States,” he explained.

He questioned the validity of the security apparatus’s claims, arguing that if the WhatsApp messages were truly indicative of a coup plot, efforts should have been made to bring back the person who suggested it from the United States in collaboration with US security authorities.

Your DCE nominee is abusive, disrespectful – Twifo Hemang Traditional Council tells Akufo-Addo

The Traditional Council of Twifo Hemang has opposed the nomination of Nana Kweku Abban for the position of District Chief Executive (DCE), citing alleged disrespectfulness as the primary reason.

Otumfuo Amoah Sasraki IV, the Omanhene of the Twifo Hemang Traditional Council, voiced disappointment in Nana Kweku Abban’s conduct, highlighting his failure to appear before the Traditional Council despite repeated summons over the past two years.

The rejection, according to Otumfuo Amoah Sasraki IV, is not a challenge to the president’s decision but rather a reflection of the nominee’s inappropriate behavior and lack of respect for traditional authorities.

“We need someone who will respect traditional authorities, who will not insult us, who will not abuse and disrespect. We want somebody to work with, not someone who will sit above us.

“This is not to challenge our president; we are in no way challenging the president of the state. We want to inform him about the conduct of this individual, whom he might not be aware of. This man is very disrespectful. We have invited him for two years now, and he has not shown up. He decided not to come, so today we are expressing our dissatisfaction with the entire traditional leadership, and this is to show how serious and sad we are,” Otumfuo Amoah Sasraki IV said in an interview with UTV.

LEAKED AUDIO: “If something happens to me…thank you” – Message Dr Boadu allegedly sent to a close ‘friend’

An audio clip circulating online, purportedly featuring the voice of the late founder of Gracegift Herbal Clinic, Dr. Grace Boadu, has ignited speculation on social media.

In the recording, the deceased expresses profound gratitude to an individual known as Nana, acknowledging unwavering support and sibling-like love despite opposition from her biological relatives and family.

Dr. Boadu goes on to express her belief that God will bless Nana for the immense love demonstrated.

However she urged Nana to maintain the confidentiality of the voice note but instructs him not to hesitate to make it viral in the unfortunate event of her demise.

“Hello Nana, this confidential message is meant for your ears only. Please ensure it remains private. But if something happens, please make it viral. I want to express my gratitude for all the kindness and love you’ve shown me as a sibling, especially considering the opposition I face from my other siblings. God bless you,” Dr. Boadu is heard saying in the audio.

The renowned herbal medicine practitioner was tragically found dead in her bathroom at her Tantra Hills residence in Accra on Monday, January 29, 2024.

Since her death, controversies have arisen, with some suggesting a rift between Dr. Boadu and her family.

TikTok user Captain Caesar has claimed that the family is content with her demise, alleging that Dr. Boadu did not extend assistance to any relatives.

Caesar also suggests that Dr. Boadu acquired wealth through unconventional means, including the purported exchange of her womb.

“The secret behind is blood money because of greediness she exchanged her womb for wealth. Due to that all her suitors couldn’t marry her, if not why would a wealthy nice lady like not be married at her age. That’s how a lot of rich Ghanaian women are spiritually married. I know most of them,” he stated.

Additionally, he claims her decision not to marry was influenced by a spiritual husband who thwarted potential suitors. These sensational claims have added fuel to the ongoing speculations surrounding Dr. Boadu’s life and demise.

Ghana Card system wasn’t developed by Akufo-Addo’s administration but Mahama’s – Sammy Gyamfi

The Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has highlighted the substantial role played by the former John Mahama administration in the establishment of the Ghana Card system.

Gyamfi contends that the NDC government initiated the implementation of the Ghana Card as early as 2016, asserting that the NPP government merely continued the system developed by its predecessor.

He asserted that in 2016, the Mahama administration gathered biometric and demographic data for approximately 16 million Ghanaians, processing around 4.7 million cards. Gyamfi, in response to Dr. Bawumia’s recent address to the nation, claimed that the Mahama administration distributed about 900,000 cards before leaving office in 2016.

Gyamfi criticized Dr. Bawumia for allegedly overlooking the significant contributions of the NDC/Mahama administration to the development of the Ghana Card system.

He emphasized that, by 2016, the NDC/Mahama government had passed a law designating the Ghana Card as the sole document for identification purposes in any transaction (L.I 2111).

He argued that the government merely continued the implementation of a system initiated by the NDC/Mahama government, acknowledging the contributions of successive administrations, including that of former President J.A Kufuor and former President J.E Atta-Mills. Gyamfi noted that Dr. Bawumia did not credit President Akufo-Addo in his address.

Read below portions of Sammy Gyamfi’s speaking notes on Dr Bawumia’s address to the nation

    THE GHANA CARD LIE

    • *Dr. Bawumia deliberately ignored the significant contributions of the NDC/Mahama administration in developing the GhanaCard system to what it is today.
    • It is important to note, that by 2016, the NDC/Mahama administration had:
    1. Passed the law that makes the Ghana Card the sole document for identification purposes  for any transaction (L.I 2111)
    2. Collected biometric and demographic data on about 16 million Ghanaians

iii. Processed about 4.7 million cards

    1. Distributed about 900,000 cards
    2. Procured 9 million blank cards
    • Upon assumption of office in 2017, Dr. Bawumia constituted a three-man committee headed by Prof. Ken Attafuah, to review the contract and implementation of the Ghana Card system.
    • The committee established the facts enumerated above which is contained on page 1 of the report and recommended the use of the existing database to continue from where the NDC left off.
    • Indeed, the NIA boss Prof. Ken Attafuah told Parliament that the contract that was signed by the NDC/Mahama administration with the Margins Group, is the same contract that is being implemented today.
    • Clearly, this government only came to continue the implementation of a system that had already been developed by the NDC/Mahama government, as a continuation of what was started under President Kuffour and continued by President Mills of blessed memory.
    • The Ghana card credit must therefore be shared by all successive governments who have contributed to where we are today. Note that Bawumia does not even credit his boss, Akufo-Addo…

According to excerpts from the statement, the proposed flat-rate tax is anticipated to significantly lower the costs of spare parts, providing relief to commercial drivers who regularly factor these expenses into transport fares.

“The Association views this initiative as highly commendable and believes it will play a crucial role in safeguarding the interests of spare parts dealerships nationwide,” portions of the statement read.

“The proposed flat rate tax is poised to significantly reduce the cost of spare parts, providing much-needed relief to commercial drivers who routinely factor these expenses into transport fares.”

Dr. Bawumia unveiled this plan as part of his presidential vision on Wednesday, February 7, during a speech at the University of Professional Studies in Accra.

The 18-year-old implicated in the alleged Kasoa ritual murder case has contradicted the assertions made by State Prosecutors, denying that he and the 15-year-old juvenile planned to seek spiritual powers for wealth.

The second accused has also contested allegations suggesting that he had discussions with the first accused about a potential trip to the Volta Region for spiritual assistance if the priest in Amasaman did not meet their expectations.

Both teenagers face charges of conspiracy and the murder of 10-year-old Ishmael Mensah Abdallah before the High Court in Accra, under the jurisdiction of Justice Lydia Osei Marfo.

While the 15-year-old juvenile (1st Accused) has admitted to the offense, stating that they “committed the crime together,” the 18-year-old (2nd Accused) has denied the charges.

Currently, State Prosecutors, led by Nana Adoma Osei, are subjecting the 18-year-old to cross-examination to scrutinize the credibility of his testimony before the High Court, presided over by Justice Lydia Osei Marfo.

The Kasoa Ofaakor Circuit Court, presided over by His Lordship Oheneba Kuffour, is concurrently trying him for the murder charge, for which he has been remanded.

The prosecutor informed the court on January 25, 2024, that the convict robbed and killed Alice Kakari when she attempted to call for help.

Legal ethics for law students must include dress code – Chief Justice

Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, has endorsed the inclusion of legal ethics studies in law school curricula, emphasizing its role in fostering appropriate discipline within the legal profession.

Speaking at a public lecture and the launch of the Gertrude Torkornoo Moot Court Competition at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) Law School, she suggested that along with legal ethics, guidance on dress codes and behavioral norms for legal practitioners should be incorporated.

“I am aware that there is brisk consideration for the incorporation of the study of legal ethics within the curriculum of law faculties.

“Allow me to suggest that to increase the ethical requirement for propriety, this curriculum be accompanied with directions on dress code and other codes on behaviour that necessarily follow the life of a legal practitioner.”

The public lecture, themed “Ethics, Compliance, and Accountability: A Holistic Approach to Adjudication,” marked the commencement of the Gertrude S. Torkornoo Moot Court Competition—a national contest bringing together law students from various faculties across Ghana. The competition aims to enhance students’ advocacy and litigation skills, preparing them for future legal careers.

Chief Justice Torkornoo discussed the significance of ethics in adjudication, successful lawyering, and the holistic approach to ethics by adjudicators.

Emphasizing the role of discipline as an ethical value, she stated that disciplined behavior, when ingrained as a cultural norm, leads to excellence in professional practice.

The Chief Justice underscored the importance of compliance with ethical values in successful lawyering, citing the constitution, statutes, and professional codes of conduct as the foundations of the justice sector.

She highlighted independent thinking, competence, diligence, and integrity as essential skills for legal professionals in dissecting facts and applying legal principles.

”Compliance with ethical values is, therefore, not an inconvenient call that disturbs the smooth catwalk to pomp of lawyering, but a gentle set of directional sign posts that lead the legal professional to the standards of intellectual delivery required for justice to be adequately served to citizens to whom belong the right of justice.”

Addressing the relationship between ethics and successful lawyering, Chief Justice Torkornoo emphasized that proficiency in law arises not only from legal knowledge but also from the exercise of adept skills and character. She further commended GIMPA School of Law for introducing the Moot Court Competition as an enriching extracurricular activity, providing a unique platform for students to learn and apply legal skills and values.

Constituents say I will lose 2024 elections if I don’t dislodge their toilets – Joe Wise

Member of Parliament for Bekwai and First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has disclosed the reasons behind his decision to exit public service.

The four-term lawmaker, who initially entered Parliament as an Independent Candidate before switching to the New Patriotic Party, has decided not to seek re-election next year.

Osei-Owusu cited unreasonable demands from constituents as a significant factor influencing his departure.

In an exclusive interview with EIB Network’s Parliamentary Correspondent, Ibrahim Alhassan, the MP, commonly known as Joe Wise, highlighted a troubling incident that led to his decision.

He revealed that a community demanded he empty a toilet facility he constructed, even though fees were charged for its use.

This demand, coupled with other instances of citizens refusing to play their role in governance, made him question the worth of his continued public service.

Mr Osei-Owusu expressed frustration at citizens who, after benefiting from projects like boreholes, refused to pay the associated bills. He emphasized the lack of appreciation and a sense of entitlement among the populace.

Additionally, he lamented the increasing disrespect from the youth in their discourse, criticizing the erosion of reverence for the elderly in Ghanaian society.

The MP placed blame on the political class for failing to instill in citizens the understanding that rights come with responsibilities. He criticized the focus on what the government should do for citizens, neglecting discussions about civic responsibilities.

Mr Osei-Owusu’s decision to exit public service aligns with a trend observed among senior members of parliament from both major political parties, raising concerns about the quality of legislation in the next parliamentary session.

“What is worse is, and that is the worst part. Indeed I will confess to you. One of the reasons that made me think it is enough, I’m not going to seek any public office again was some communities demanding that their public toilet is full, and if I don’t have those drained then they won’t vote. I kept asking myself, was it all worth it?

“Because the first thing is that, it is your personal responsibility to provide a toilet facility for yourself. Now for some reason we use the state money to build one. It has been given to you, you use it, it’s full, you (MP) come back and drain it for me else I won’t vote! Somebody has not even gotten that opportunity at all.

“There’s another community that doesn’t even have it. In the end, I asked myself is it all worth it? Because what is even annoying, and let me be frank, if you go into that community the people using that pay for it. It is the community leaders that collect the money there and they call that community money and that it’s not even for replacing bulbs. So they were comparing notes.”

Vloggers allegedly robbed, beaten by late Dr. Grace Boadu’s family

Social media is buzzing with reports that the family of the late Dr. Grace Boadu, known for Grace Gift Herbal Clinic, has allegedly assaulted vloggers based in Kumasi.

According to the reports, vloggers such as Papa Jay, Grade Wan, and YA Media visited the family home of Dr. Grace Boadu after learning that the family had scheduled that day for making plans ahead of the final funeral rites for the late herbalist.

The vloggers state that their sole purpose for the visit was to cover the events and inform their viewers and the wider Ghanaian audience about the proceedings.

However, their plans took an unexpected turn.

They recount that after entering the house to exchange pleasantries with the deceased’s family, they were attacked by some men from the family.

The vloggers describe being mercilessly beaten, having their phones taken, and their car damaged during the altercation.

A viral video circulating online shows the vloggers’ car with almost all its windows shattered.

“So we realized that nothing was going on in the house so we decided to go. All we saw was people from the family house coming towards us. So Papa Jay who granted the first interview was given a slap. When they were approaching us Papa Jay told them that we came in peace. We have heard about certain things and we are here to find out how far with the funeral then they slapped him”, one of them said.

“They have beaten me rough. About 7 people were on only me beating me. Two phones of mine they have taken both from me. When they were beating me my phones fell and they picked them”, he added.

2024 elections: Whoever is willing to address our concerns will get our support – FABAG

The Food and Beverage Association of Ghana (FABAG) has signaled its readiness to back any presidential candidate addressing its concerns and challenges.

In a statement released on Monday, February 12, FABAG’s chairman, John Awuni, expressed concern about the escalating tax burden on the private sector, underscoring the association’s eagerness to learn the positions of political parties’ flagbearers regarding taxes and policies beneficial to members and their businesses.

The statement highlighted the adverse impact of numerous taxes on imports, leading businesses to explore or export through other West African countries.

Currently, the private sector is disheartened, with many considering investment options in neighboring countries like Togo and Cote d’Ivoire, witnessing a daily depletion of their working capital.

FABAG encourages its members to vote based on the taxes and policies proposed by presidential aspirants.

The association emphasizes the need for a revitalized private sector and urges political parties to articulate specific tax policies for imports, manufacturing, and the service sector.

It seeks clarity on how the private sector’s key concerns will be addressed, expressing dissatisfaction with the current business environment.

FABAG urged a commitment to genuinely profitable private sector support and laments feeling unwelcome by the government, viewed as “criminals” for demanding relief from over-taxation.

“Currently, the private sector is disillusioned, with most players exploring investment options in neighbouring countries such as Togo and Cote d’Ivoire. Most businesses are seeing their working capital disappearing by the day.”

“Indeed, members of our association as well as our employees will be encouraged to vote based on how the various political parties commit to address the key concerns of the private sector. The sector is the engine of growth but currently, the engine is grinding to halt. Business-friendly government policies which constitute fuel and lubricants of a healthy engine have gradually been replaced with business-killer policies. We would like to know how this engine will be re-ignited when a new administration takes power. How the sector will be revitalized needs to be clearly articulated and documented in manifestoes. Questions that beg the attention of those seeking the mandate of Ghanaians to govern are as follows: What will be the specific tax policies for imports, manufacturing and the Service sector? How will they make the private sector genuinely profitable if given the mandate? At the moment, most players, including members of our apex association in the private sector feel unwelcomed by the government and viewed as though they are criminals for demanding a break from over-taxation. The attacks, mudslinging and harassment are dispiriting. We don’t feel the backing and support of the State.”

Ghana must embrace US model to curb corruption – John Kwakye

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye, has urged the government to consider adopting the US Inspector General (IG) system as a strategic measure to combat corruption more effectively.

In response to the address by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, on his vision for Ghana on February 7, Dr. Kwakye emphasized the importance of preventing corruption at its roots.

He suggested that implementing the US Inspector General system would serve as a proactive approach to corruption prevention.

In his article titled “Dr. Bawumia’s Speech: Turning an Impossibility into the Possibility?” Dr. Kwakye proposed that an independent Inspector General, reporting directly to Parliament, should be embedded in every Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assembly (MMDA).

This Inspector General would monitor all financial transactions within the MMDA, significantly reducing the occurrence of corruption.

“In terms of preventing corruption before it occurs, we have suggested that Ghana adopt the US Inspector General (IG) system. The IG, who will be independent and report directly to Parliament, will be embedded in every MMDA and monitor all financial transactions within the MMDA. This will contribute to prevent most corruption from taking place. Since we are poor at prosecuting corruption, it would be best to prevent it from occurring in the first instance.”

Additionally, he called on the government to enhance the capabilities and resources of existing anti-corruption institutions such as the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), and the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).

Strengthening these institutions, according to Dr. Kwakye, is crucial for them to fulfill their roles effectively in investigating and prosecuting corruption, serving as a deterrent to potential wrongdoers.

However, he emphasized that addressing corruption must begin with robust measures at the highest levels of government.

“Notwithstanding, I believe the accountable institutions—OSP, EOCO, CHRAJ, NIB—have an important role to play in fighting corruption. I will, therefore, call for them to be strengthened and resourced to carry out their mandate of investigating and prosecuting corruption to serve as a deterrent to potential culprits. But it has to be said that the surest way of fighting corruption is to start from the top.”

Agbogba Cosway: Residents mobilize funds to repair bad roads

Homeowners and residents residing in the Agbogba Cosway area within the Dome Kwabenya constituency in the Greater Accra Region have taken it upon themselves to address the deplorable state of the road extending from the Agbogba Police Post intersection to the Academic City University intersection.

Having endured substandard road conditions for an extended period without government intervention, the 350 residents and homeowners decided to initiate construction efforts independently, utilizing their own financial resources.

Pooling together an amount close to GH¢80,000, the community members have engaged the services of a contractor to undertake the necessary road improvement works on their behalf.

An Executive Member of the Resident’s Association of Agbogba Cosway, Jerry Odotei, expressed disappointment in the government’s lack of attention to the community’s infrastructure development needs.

He highlighted the adverse impact of the dilapidated road on residents’ health, emphasizing that their vehicles had suffered damage due to the poor road conditions.

Mr. Odotei explained that despite their numerous attempts to draw the government’s attention to the road’s condition, all efforts had proven futile. Consequently, the community mobilized funds to address the issue independently.

“Our road is part of the ECOWAS Highways, which was constructed to a certain point. The Agbogba Police Post intersection to the Academic City University intersection was neglected. We have been complaining to get it fixed, but all efforts have proved futile,” said Mr. Odotei.

He disclosed that the community raised GH¢45,000 in the initial phase of mobilization and an additional GH¢32,000 in the second phase.

With these funds, they have hired a contractor to begin the road repair work, starting with the use of a grader and the purchase of necessary materials.

Mr. Odotei emphasized that there is more work to be done and called on individuals and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to provide assistance in addressing the overall road conditions in the community.

The Residents’ Association of Agbogba Cosway made a plea for help, expressing their sense of neglect by the authorities.

“All our vehicles are now faulty due to the bad roads, and we have been cut off from other communities including Ashongman Estates, Kwabenya, Ashaley Botwe, and beyond. So we decided to fix the roads ourselves by mobilizing some funds. In the first mobilization, we got GH¢45,000, and in the 2nd phase of mobilization, we had GH¢32,000. This morning we hired a grader and bought some stones. The contractor is working on the road.”

“We still need help; we have been neglected,” the Residents’ Association of Agbogba Cosway appealed.

Sad scenes as a mother of 3 imprisoned without trial reunites with family

A mother of three, Beauty, who had been imprisoned without trial at the Nsawam Female Prison for five years, has finally reunited with her family.

The emotional scenes unfolded as Beauty walked out of the prison gates, marking the end of a long and challenging chapter.

Beauty’s journey into imprisonment began when a tragic incident led to the loss of her husband’s life.

The unfortunate incident occurred when her deceased husband handed her 5 Ghana cedis with the intention of preparing a meal of banku and soup.

At that time, Beauty was not only managing the responsibilities of caring for her three children but also dealing with the challenges of being a lactating mother.

Financial constraints compelled Beauty to prepare only the banku without the accompanying soup, a decision that sparked a confrontation with her husband.

In an attempt to defend herself during the heated altercation, Beauty threw a knife, unintentionally resulting in the tragic death of her husband.

For the past five years, Beauty has carried the weight of her incarceration at the Nsawam Female Prison.

The separation from her three children and the haunting memories of the incident added to the emotional toll she endured.

However, the recent turn of events brought a glimmer of hope for Beauty.

With the intervention of Crime Check and its legal team, the court granted her bail, paving the way for her release from prison.

Herbert Wigwe’s aide, Olushola, escaped death after opting to travel by road – Reports

Faleye Olushola, the special assistant to Herbert Wigwe, co-founder and group chief executive officer of Access Holdings Plc, narrowly escaped tragedy on February 9.

Mr Wigwe, along with his wife and son, lost their lives in a helicopter crash.

The unfortunate incident involved Flight N130CZ, operated by Orbic Air LLC, crashing in the USA on February 10, with Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, and his son among the six passengers on board.

Remarkably, Olushola, listed on the manifest, avoided the disaster by choosing to travel by road instead of taking the helicopter from Palm Springs to Boulder City in Nevada.

Olushola, who had flown with Wigwe and others from London to Palm Springs, decided against the helicopter due to concerns about night-time weather conditions.

This decision spared him from the tragic air disaster that claimed the lives of four individuals, including Wigwe and his family.

Access Holdings responded to the incident, expressing a lack of “adequate information” about the crash and assuring collaboration with US authorities for updates.

Herbert Wigwe, known for inspiring messages, regularly shared positive content on his social media accounts, emphasizing living a life of purpose, kindness, and gratitude.

In another development, Adams Oshiomhole, the senator representing Edo North Senatorial District, urged Nigerians not to solely blame President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the current state of the nation.

Oshiomhole attributed some of the challenges to the policies of the previous administration led by ex-President Muhammadu Buhari.

He emphasized that national interest should take precedence over partisan considerations and acknowledged his criticism of Buhari’s policies during an interview on Channels TV.

In an interview with ZionFelix, Abena Korkor disclosed that her former partner generously provided her with GHS 20,000 every week.

“I had a boyfriend who gave me 20k a week, he worked at a quarry and owned a steel company,” she added.

She acknowledged utilizing a portion of the funds to establish a business.

Abena Korkor delved into the details of her entrepreneurial venture, disclosing her involvement in the sale of adult-oriented products, including sex toys.

The proceeds from this business, she stated, contributed to her ability to secure an apartment and cover various expenses.

Prior to her relationship with her ex-boyfriend, Korkor mentioned paying her rent on a monthly basis.

However, the financial support she received allowed her to pay a full year’s rent upfront.

Additionally, she used part of the funds to furnish her living space, purchase furniture, and attend to other needs.

“My ex and I dated over a year, the 20k he gave me every week was what I was using for business. I bought hair, sex toy, dresses and others,” she added.

The socialite unveiled that her former boyfriend was the owner of a quarry and steel company.

“Trotro mates” furious with Bawumia for identifying as one to ‘escape’ public scrutiny over economic crisis

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent analogy involving drivers’ mates has stirred discontent among some in the profession, leading to preparations for a substantial demonstration.

Reports indicate that these drivers’ mates are displeased with Dr. Bawumia’s use of their role as an example.

Alhaji Amadu Bukari Sorogho, former Member of Parliament for Madina, disclosed this on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, on Monday.

According to Sorogho, these drivers’ mates are planning a protest to distance themselves from Dr. Bawumia, who also serves as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The drivers’ mates feel that Dr. Bawumia’s analogy is damaging their reputation, prompting them to take action.

Despite their anger, Sorogho urged them to remain calm.

“Are you aware that mates in the country are angry at Bawumia and want to protest because he used them to set an example? They claim he is destroying their names but we are pleading with them to calm down” the NDC man asserted.

“A typical mate doesn’t qualify to drive even if your master travels for years but Bawumia acts as a President anytime Akufo-Addo is out of the country and so you see the confusion he has brought” he quizzed.

Furthermore, Alhaji Sorogho argued that if the Vice President considers himself a mate, then he is not qualified to be a driver.

He pointed out that a typical conductor does not meet the qualifications to drive, questioning Dr. Bawumia’s role as an acting president whenever President Akufo-Addo is out of the country, suggesting it has led to confusion.

MASLOC scandal: Second accused points fingers at Sedina Attionu for financial mismanagement

During cross-examination by Principal State Attorney Winifred Sarpong in the ongoing trial of the boss of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Christina Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, the second accused, Daniel Axim, pointed fingers at his former boss.

Mr Axim claimed that the memos, leading to a purported financial loss of GH¢1,706,000, were prepared at the behest of Sedina Attionu, who is currently on bail.

These memos were allegedly raised for financing nationwide sensitization projects, transportation (T&T), and refreshments for beneficiaries.

Mr Axim denied personally benefiting from these funds, asserting that he would collect the money from the Account office and hand it over to Sedina for disbursement.

He placed the blame squarely on Madam Attionu, recounting instances where she postponed payments for T&T and other expenses after sensitization programs, only to later promise to settle them.

As the former Head of Operations at MASLOC under Sedina Attionu, Axim stated that all cash memos bearing his signatures were authorized by her.

He explained that when he signed memos requesting funds, they were returned to Sedina Attionu, who would then approve them for Finance to release the funds, occasionally collecting the money himself to hand it over to her.

“I remember vividly that her driver (A1), Neequeye, also collected some of the same sensitisation programme money that I generated a memos for. The same applies to Nana Serwah Tawiah and Anita Gaffer,” he said.

He emphasized that the practice of collecting money from the Account and delivering it to the CEO or political heads was not uncommon at MASLOC. Axim highlighted instances where he and other officers collected funds without documentation for the CEO.

His role, he claimed, was mainly to generate memos as per her instructions, which her office would submit to Finance for disbursement.

Axim revealed that Sedina’s Secretariat withheld part of staff traveling allowances, alleging that she cheated staff, including himself, on international assignments by retaining their allowances, ranging from US$500 to US$1000. He cited instances where Sedina Attionu allegedly split the Head of Legal’s US$5,000 into two.

Axim and Sedina are both accused of raising 23 memos, resulting in a financial loss of over GH¢1.5 million to the Republic of Ghana.

Another SHS student dies after he was refused exeat to go home

The parents of a 19-year-old final-year student at Akim Swedro Senior High School have pointed fingers at the school management for the tragic death of their son.

According to the grieving parents, their son, Keater Vadje, was denied an exemption despite his request for leave due to illness.

They alleged that Keater had sought permission to go home for medical care, but his plea was rejected, prompting him to call his father for assistance.

Rainbow Radio’s Prince Collins Bening, reporting from the area, revealed that Keater approached the housemaster, explaining his sickness and requesting an exam exemption.

However, the school management dismissed his request, questioning the seriousness of his illness.

Unable to secure an exeat after multiple attempts, Keater contacted his father, who promptly arrived at the school, took his son home, and rushed him to the Akimdan Government Hospital. Unfortunately, the facility was unable to provide adequate treatment and advised the father to seek help elsewhere.

Subsequently, Keater was taken to the Akwatia St. Dominic Hospital, where he tragically passed away in the evening.

The grief-stricken parents firmly hold the school responsible for their son’s untimely death, arguing that if he had been granted leave, he might have survived.

As the family prepares for the funeral, they have scheduled the burial for February 16, 2024.

  • Don’t take credit for what you didn’t do, we fixed dumsor – NDC to NPP

Don’t take credit for what you didn’t do, we fixed dumsor – NDC to NPP

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has contradicted Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s assertion that the Akufo-Addo government successfully resolved the nation’s power crisis, known as dumsor.

Rejecting Dr. Bawumia’s claim, the NDC urged Ghanaians to dismiss it, emphasizing its inaccuracy.

Addressing the nation on Wednesday, February 7, as the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Bawumia highlighted the achievements of the current administration, including the alleged resolution of dumsor.

He credited this accomplishment to a decisive and intentional government program.

In response, the NDC issued a press statement challenging Dr. Bawumia’s assertions, maintaining that the power crisis was actually addressed during the tenure of former President John Mahama, whom they hailed as a nation builder.

“We started with a clear, decisive and deliberate program to, among other things, stabilise the economy, fix dumsor, fix the NHIS, fix the roads, clear the arrears, make education free and accessible, significantly enhance social protection for the vulnerable in society, industrialize our economy, tackle youth unemployment and empower farmers,” he stated.

Contrary to Dr. Bawumia’s claims, the NDC argued that it was the NDC/Mahama government that successfully addressed DUMSOR.

They pointed out that Ghana experienced dumsor in various years before 2012, and President Mahama, recognizing the issue, promised to fix it.

“On the contrary, the facts show that it was the NDC/Mahama government that fixed DUMSOR. Note that Ghana recorded DUMSOR in 1984, 1997, 2006-2007, before the problem reoccured in 2012, as a result of a disruption of the West African Gas pipeline, which created a power generation deficit.””The visionary and experienced Nation Builder, President Mahama accepted responsibility for the problem and promised to fix it. Indeed, by 2016 he had comprehensively fixed DUMSOR and ended load shedding.”

By 2016, he had comprehensively resolved dumsor by introducing power plants like Ameri and Karpower, increasing the country’s generation capacity by over 800 Megawatts.

The NDC’s statement also highlighted that the NPP, including Bawumia, now blames Mahama for creating what they term as “excess capacity” in power generation.

No external force can influence our judgement when dealing with cases – EOCO

The Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, has asserted that she faces no political pressure in conducting investigations and prosecutions.

Her statement follows the referral of a suspected money laundering case involving former Water and Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah to EOCO by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Despite the OSP’s decision to drop charges against Dapaah due to a lack of credible evidence, COP Addo-Danquah emphasized that her office would only act when there is concrete evidence of wrongdoing.

Speaking at an anti-corruption forum, she highlighted the importance of adhering to the law and explained that her actions are guided by evidence rather than external influences.

“Sometimes when I hear people say I am handling a case and I have powers from above directing me, fortunately for me I have not had that because you are guided by the law.

“Nobody will direct you when you have evidence. It is when you don’t have evidence, when you haven’t been able to put evidence together then someone can tell you not to do this.

“But if you have done your work in such a way that you have evidence, very solid evidence, you just have to explain to the person that these are my evidence, these are A, B and C and they are solid and I am presenting it to the court.

“Nobody can stop you but we hide behind powers from above and we are put back and we disappoint the citizens but they have given you the mandate to do the job,” she explained.

The case involved the seizure of significant sums of money from Dapaah’s home, leading to charges related to failing to declare assets.

The OSP dropped these charges after a meeting with the judge and defense lawyers, with sources indicating a court deadline for unfreezing accounts and returning seized funds to Dapaah.

The background of the case involved Dapaah’s arrest in 2023 on suspicion of corruption and the subsequent resignation from her ministerial position amid public pressure.

  • BoG’s GH¢60.81bn loss to trigger cuts in essential operations – John Kwakye

BoG’s GH¢60.81bn loss to trigger cuts in essential operations – John Kwakye

The Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), Dr. John Kwakye, has voiced criticism against the New Patriotic Party flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for characterizing the GH¢60.81 billion losses reported by the Bank of Ghana in 2022 as merely technical losses.

The economic researcher contends that these losses will necessitate reductions in crucial operations of the Bank as it seeks to manage costs.

In an article titled “Dr. Bawumia’s Speech: Turning an Impossibility into the Possibility?”, Dr. Kwakye pointed out that one immediate consequence of these losses is the fluctuating inflationary figures witnessed in the country.

Dr. Kwakye disputed Dr. Bawumia’s assertion that the Bank of Ghana’s actions were responsible and temporary.

“Dr. Bawumia said BoG’s action was responsible and that it was temporary, as the Bank had advanced money to Government in only two of the past seven years. The Minister of Finance had expressed similar sentiments in the past, which was not surprising because Government was the direct beneficiary of the monetary financing.

“However, as central bankers, we know that the most inflationary source of financing the budget is high-powered money coming directly from the central bank vault. It is not the fact that BoG advanced money to Government that is the issue, for the Bank’s Act provides for such advances up to 5% of the previous year’s revenue. It is the magnitude of the advance—over 50% of the previous year’s revenue—that is disturbing. It is no wonder inflation peaked at 54.1% in 2022—and depreciation ballooned to 54.2% in November 2022, before falling bank to 30.0% in December 2022. Meanwhile, as Government debt to BoG was also discounted under the DDEP, the Bank made a whopping loss of GHS61 billion and a record negative equity of GHS54 billion in 2022.”

“Both the Minister and the Governor seem to have played down the loss as only a technical loss. However, the fact is that the Bank’s balance sheet has been severely impacted, and this would force it to cut back on some of its important operations so as to save costs.”

He highlighted that while it is not unusual for the Bank to advance money to the government, the magnitude of the advance—exceeding 50% of the previous year’s revenue—is concerning.

This, according to Dr. Kwakye, contributed to the spike in inflation and depreciation in 2022.

Despite attempts by the Finance Minister, Ken Ofor-Atta, and the Bank of Ghana to downplay the losses as technical, Dr. Kwakye emphasized that the Bank’s balance sheet has been significantly impacted. He argued that this impact would compel the Bank to scale back on crucial operations in order to cut costs.

8,531 defaulting companies to be deregistered by May

The Office of the Registrar of Companies (ORC) has initiated legal proceedings to deregister 8,531 companies Limited by Shares for defaulting by the end of May this year.

The ORC stated that this decision is essential to cleanse the Register of inactive companies and those in default for failing to submit their annual returns and update their entity records in accordance with Section 126 of the Companies Act 2019 (Act 992).

According to a statement released by the ORC and reported by GhanaWeb Business, this action comes two years after the Office undertook extensive awareness campaigns and published information about these companies in the media and on its website, as mandated by the Companies Act.

Despite persistent efforts to encourage stakeholders to comply with filing requirements, some companies have not adhered to the directive, the ORC explained.

In response to this, the ORC emphasized that starting from May 1, 2024, it will implement a one-off administrative penalty of GH¢1,000 against any defaulting company. This penalty will be strictly enforced in accordance with the Companies Act, 2019 (Act 992).

The ORC also reminded company officials that businesses whose names are struck off are prohibited from operating under the company’s name for 12 years.

Restoration can only occur through a court order issued by the Registrar of Companies, following a finding of sufficient cause, in line with Section 289 (7) of the Companies Act 992.

  • US$1.06bn inflow was recorded by Petroleum Holding Fund in 2023 – Report

US$1.06bn inflow was recorded by Petroleum Holding Fund in 2023 – Report

In 2023, despite economic challenges, the Petroleum Holding Fund (PHF) reported a total inflow of US$1.06 billion, marking a slight decrease from 2022’s figure of US$1.43 billion, as revealed in the latest report by the Bank of Ghana.

The first half of 2023 witnessed a drop in crude oil prices from US$84.97 per barrel to US$75.68 per barrel due to supply constraints by OPEC, a slowdown in China’s reopening, and global recession concerns.

As the designated public fund at the Bank of Ghana for receiving and disbursing petroleum revenue for Ghana, the PHF experienced substantial inflows of US$521.87 million in the latter half of 2023, slightly less than the US$540.15 million in the first six months.

In contrast, the same period in 2022 saw higher receipts at US$696.82 million.

The primary revenue sources for the PHF, including lifting proceeds, surface rentals, interest income, and corporate taxes, remained consistent.

Ghana’s crude oil liftings in the second half of 2023 generated US$319.74 million from the Jubilee, Sankofa Gye Nyame (SGN), and Tweneboa Enyenra Ntomme (TEN) fields. The Jubilee field contributed significantly with three liftings totaling approximately US$251.41 million, followed by SGN liftings at US$68.33 million.

In the first half of 2023, the Ghana Heritage Fund (GHF) and Ghana Stabilization Fund (GSF) achieved total returns of 1.79 percent and 2.07 percent, respectively. Realized income across the Ghana Petroleum Funds (GPFs) reached US$15.70 million during this period. By the end of 2023, the GSF balance stood at US$190.4 million, while the GHF reached US$1.05 billion.

The PHF received a total of US$540.15 million in the first six months of 2023, with allocations including US$125.71 million to the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), US$238.81 million as the Annual Budget Funding Amount (ABFA), and US$71.64 million and US$30.70 million deposited into the GSF and GHF, respectively.

Other oil-related proceeds, comprising corporate taxes (US$198.69 million), surface rentals (US$0.112 million), and interest income (US$3.32 million), amounted to US$202.126 million. Following allocations, the GHF and GSF received US$68.5 million and US$159.7 million, respectively, out of the US$228.2 million allotted.

A significant development in the second half was the withdrawal of US$106.5 million from the Ghana Stabilization Fund, indicating strategic reserve utilization for fiscal needs, surpassing the US$83 million withdrawal in the first half of 2023.

The GPFs’ investment strategy remained prudent, yielding US$18.1 million in investment income amid market uncertainty in the latter half of 2023, aligning with mandated guidelines to uphold fund growth.

Guinness World Record has blocked a blogger on Instagram after being tagged in a video showcasing Adu Safowaah’s attempt at the longest speech marathon by an individual.

The ongoing speech-a-thon, undertaken by Adu Safowaah, caught the attention of the blogger who shared the video on Instagram, presumably in an attempt to draw more attention to the remarkable feat.

Taking to Instagram the user  wrote “ #adusafowaahspeechathon 64hours and counting 🔥🔥 And to think @guinessworldrecord blocked me from tagging them is beyond me”.

Ghanaian actress and media personality, Adu Safowaah has officially embarked on her quest to establish a new Guinness World Record for the longest speech marathon by an individual.

Commencing on February 9, 2024, the record attempt will run until February 14, 2024, at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra.

To adhere to the challenge’s guidelines, Adu Safowaa must deliver speeches on diverse topics, each lasting a minimum of five minutes, with no more than a 30-second pause between them.

The speeches are expected to be original, spontaneous, and distinct from one another. Adu Safowaa has chosen to communicate in English, French, and Twi throughout the marathon.

The existing world record for the longest speech marathon is held by Ananta Ram KC, a Nepalese motivational speaker, who spoke for an impressive 90 hours and 2 minutes in Kathmandu from August 27 to 31, 2018.

Aiming to make history as the first Ghanaian to achieve this feat, Adu Safowaa is determined to surpass the current record set by Ananta Ram KC.

Notably, Adu Safowaa joins the ranks of other Ghanaians who have sought to etch their names into the Guinness World Records.

This includes Afua Asantewaa, who sang for an astonishing 105 hours, Chef Failatu Abdul Razak, who cooked continuously for 227 hours, Ace-Liam Nana Sam, who became the youngest artist at the age of 11, and Dela Gomey, who applied lipstick to 7 people in just 30 seconds.

  • Mahama has no credibility – Aide to Bawumia

Mahama has no credibility – Aide to Bawumia

Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, an aide to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has labeled ex-President, John Dramani Mahama has an individual who lacks credibility.

In an interview with TV3, Mr Khomeini pointed to the infamous Airbus scandal and bribery allegations as evidence, contending that Mahama’s credibility, particularly on matters of corruption, is severely compromised.

According to him, Mahama lacks integrity in the fight against corruption.

“I think that as somebody who passionately advocates for Mahama  he should be the last person to use the word credibility, especially on matters bothering corruption. Mr Mahama is the only politician I know at the highest level who is incurably corrupt, there is absolutely no doubt about that.

“In February 2009, according to the Federal Court report on the matter of the infamous Airbus scandal, the court established conclusively that Mr Mahama as early as February 2009  was in a constant email conversation with officials of Airbus.

His statement was in response to Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who accused Dr. Bawumia of being a habitual liar.

Mr Gyamfi alleged that Bawumia deceived the public in 2016 and 2020 with falsehoods to secure victories for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

However, Mr Khomeini, countering these claims, criticized Mahama’s credibility, citing the infamous Airbus scandal and accusing him of receiving bribes.

He argued that Mahama’s reputation as a corrupt politician is well-established, both locally and internationally.

“We also have listened, after a series of investigations by the Special Prosecutor that it was established clearly that Mr Mahama was the man designated Government Official 1. It was this man who used the name of his brother as the intermediary to receive bribes worth 8 million dollars with a phony company registered in Spain that phony company took 3million dollars out of the money and remitted over 5 million dollars to Mr. Mahana.”

He added “Indeed, if we were in any democratic culture that works effectively, Mr Mahama should not be leading any political party into any elections. This is a man whose reputation as a corrupt man is known locally and internationally. In fact, in the BBC interview he was asked ‘Have you ever received bribes?’ he dilly-dallied and asked a counter question whether as a human being or as president.  When Dr Bawumia spoke at UPSA, he proudly declared that as a human being and as vice president he is not corrupt.”

He suggested that, given Mahama’s alleged involvement in corruption, he should not lead any political party in elections.

“It is very laughable that our friends in the NPP and Bawumia think that they can once again hoodwink the people with lies.

“Ghanaians are wide awake. The days when Bawumia could get away with his lectures as we saw in opposition which were full of lies, are gone. He got away with it in 2016 and in 2020, but they will not be third time lucky in 2024. The whole propaganda that he was the economic Messiah, and he had the magic wand has been exposed.“

The people have no confidence and trust in Bawumia, his people are faced with the challenge of marketing a candidate who is a chronic liar,” he said.

Woman reveals what happens to strands of hair in salon after customer leaves

A self-proclaimed repented witch has provided insights into the unseen battle waged against hairdressers by demonic forces.

In an interview with Asempa FM, the individual, who claims to have turned away from evil practices, shed light on the challenges faced by genuine hairdressers and the spiritual attacks orchestrated by their less scrupulous counterparts.

According to the repented witch, the hairdressing industry is rife with spiritual warfare, with malevolent forces seeking to undermine and destroy the businesses of those genuinely committed to their craft.

She explained that within the supernatural realm, these dark energies employ various tactics to test the resolve and faith of unsuspecting hairdressers.

“I will talk about hairdressers today. This is how we destroy their business. There are a lot of them in our kingdom. Those who are genuinely doing the business are being attacked by those who are not genuine. When your fellow hairdresser wants your business to collapse, some of them do it spiritually while others do not.

One of the methods detailed by the repented witch involves the sending of a spirit in human form to approach a hairdresser for a service, often feigning financial constraints.

“This is how the evil ones attack your business. They send a spirit to you just to test you. That person may come in the form of an old lady who will tell you she doesn’t have enough money wants you to wash and style her hair.

“The moment you agree to do it and you start washing her hair you will see lice and  not commenting on it place you on  a safer side but when you comment about it that will be the end of your life,” she stated.

The unsuspecting hairdresser is then faced with a moral dilemma as the spirit, disguised as an old lady, requests a hair wash and styling.
The pivotal moment comes when the hairdresser encounters lice during the hair wash.

According to her, remaining silent about the presence of lice is a protective measure, while commenting on it can have dire consequences.

Offending the spirit by acknowledging the lice is said to result in spiritual retribution and potential harm to the hairdresser’s livelihood.

“She will be offended and deal with you at the camp. All she needs is anything from your shop, it could be a strand of hair on the floor. When she gets to her camp she chants on your items and make your live miserably,” she added.

The repented witch emphasized that these malevolent spirits operate within a network, seeking to acquire items from the targeted hairdresser’s shop, such as a strand of hair on the floor.

Once obtained, the spirits allegedly use these items to cast negative spells, making the hairdresser’s life unbearable.

“Individuals who fall prey to this tactics could positively revive their businesses again but those who resort to negative words will never see their businesses prosper again,” he added.

The interviewee advised individuals facing such spiritual attacks to respond with positivity and resilience, avoiding negative words that could perpetuate the harm.”Individuals who fall prey to this tactics could positively revive their businesses again but those who resort to negative words will never see their businesses prosper again

Court orders IGP, others, to pay GH250k for assaulting man

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) and three others have been ordered to pay damages totaling GH¢253,709 as compensation to a father of four who was assaulted by a police officer, resulting in his “inability to have an erection.”

The High Court in Accra, presided over by Justice Kwasi Adjenin-Boateng, ruled that the police officer used “unreasonable force” during the arrest.

Isaac Manu, a welder, was arrested in 2016 based on suspicion by his former employer of stealing a KIA Sportage car.

Mr Manu filed a lawsuit on May 31, 2019, seeking general damages for assault, special damages for medical expenses, compensation for psychological trauma, compensation for loss of earnings, loss of livelihood, and aggravated damages for his inability to have an erection.

The court found that Mr Manu’s arrest involved unreasonable force, with injuries to his face and eyes. Manu had sought medical attention, and subsequent examinations revealed permanent damage to his left eye.

Additionally, he claimed he could not have an erection after the assault.

In response, the defendants, including the Attorney General, Vivian Adeoku, Matthew Adrah, and Kwesi Asare, argued that the force used was minimal and reasonable during the arrest, and Manu’s injuries were minor.

The court, however, ruled in favor of the plaintiff, awarding general damages of GH¢10,000.00, special damages of GH¢43,709.00, and compensation for loss of livelihood and psychological trauma totaling GH¢200,000.00.

The defendants were jointly and severally ordered to pay these damages, along with a cost of GH¢20,000.00. Additionally, a cost of GH¢5,000.00 was awarded in favor of Vivian Adeoku, the third defendant.

Mahama has nothing to offer as compared to Bawumia – Nana Akomea

The Chief Executive Officer of the State Transport Corporation (STC), Nana Akomea, expressed confidence that Ghanaians would have no regrets in keeping the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in power, especially with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the president.

This assurance comes in the aftermath of the Bawumia Speak conference, where the NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, unveiled his visions for the country on February 7, 2024, with a focus on the 2025 leadership.

Nana Akomea, speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show, ‘Ghana Montie,’ conveyed his optimism about Dr. Bawumia’s ideologies presented in his ‘Bold Solution’ address, emphasizing the potential for reshaping Ghana under the NPP’s leadership.

In comparing Dr. Bawumia to former president Mahama, Nana Akomea asserted that such a comparison would be inappropriate. He highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, contrasting them with what he described as the lack of concrete policies from Mahama in his bid for the presidency once again.

“Bawumia is new and brings new ideas, Mahama is a former president and has nothing to offer,” he said.

  • We will resist any attempt to rig 2024 elections – NDC to EC

We will resist any attempt to rig 2024 elections – NDC to EC

An operative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), James Agbey, has issued a statement expressing concern and cautioning the Electoral Commission (EC) and its associates against interfering with the results of the 2024 elections.

He emphasized that the NDC would not accept any effort by the EC to manipulate the electoral process in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Agbey asserted that NDC operatives would actively resist and thwart any clandestine efforts by the EC to manipulate the outcome of the 2024 elections, even before the commencement of voting.

In his statement, Agbey conveyed a stern message to the EC and its collaborators, affirming the readiness of NDC operatives to resist any attempts at manipulation, stating, “We’ll not sit by and look on while the commission plunges the country into chaos. My colleagues and I are ready to stand up and be counted. We are ready to offer resistance to ensure that we have credible, free and fair elections in 2024.”

“I’m putting out this statement to send a clear message to the EC and its collaborators that operatives of the NDC will resist and prevent any sinister plot by the commission to manipulate the outcome of the 2024 elections even before the first ballot is cast.

He also criticized the EC for recent proposals to modify elements of the electoral system, such as the suggested early closure of polls and the abandonment of indelible ink usage.

Mr Agbey argued that the EC’s plans, especially the proposal to eliminate indelible ink traditionally used to prevent multiple voting, appear to be a deliberate attempt to rig the 2024 elections in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He pointed out the potential consequences of such actions and criticized the EC for purportedly turning a blind eye to disruptions caused by NPP supporters during the 2020 elections, leading to the unfortunate loss of innocent lives.

I saw NPP’s Dickson Osei-Assibey in a fatal accident – Apostle Francis Amoako Atta

Founder and Leader of the Lord’s Parliament Chapel International, Apostle Francis Amoako Atta made a startling revelation during the live broadcast of Onua FM’s “Maseda Nie Thanksgiving Breakfast” on Friday, February 9, 2024, held at El Wak Stadium.

The Man of God shared a prophetic message about the life of an NPP aspirant who vied for the parliamentary seat in the Atwima Nwabiagya North constituency, Lawyer Dickson Osei-Assibey, during this year’s primaries.

As the Apostle ministered, he disclosed a forewarning that Osei-Assibey might encounter a fatal car accident, potentially resulting in his demise.

Offering specific details, he mentioned the former aspirant’s ownership of a white V8 vehicle and a school in Barekese, revealing that he witnessed posters of Osei-Assibey’s obituary affixed to the school premises.

Delving into the parliamentary seat contest, Apostle Amoako Atta stated, “I saw he was number one on the ballot paper but the candidate who was number two on the ballot paper won the election”.

The Man of God also highlighted the existence of malicious activities perpetrated against Lawyer Dickson Osei-Assibey, attributing these acts to his ultimate defeat in the primaries.

  • You fought us over baseless e-levy only for Bawumia to scrap it – Sam George to NPP MPs

You fought us over baseless e-levy only for Bawumia to scrap it – Sam George to NPP MPs

The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram, Samuel Nartey George, has criticized Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia‘s pledge to abolish the E-levy, equating it to a deceptive move aimed at NPP MPs who previously supported the tax implementation.

In a post on his X platform dated February 8, 2024, Sam George questioned the sentiments of the NPP MPs who enthusiastically applauded Bawumia’s announcement, highlighting the apparent contradiction in their positions.

Expressing skepticism, Sam George noted that Bawumia’s statement essentially implied that the MPs lacked foresight in their support for the E-levy, dismissing their arguments and debates as baseless.

“I have a question to ask my Colleague NPP MPs who were sitting in the UPSA Hall yesterday and clapping vigorously for the comical performance of Dr @MBawumia. How do you all feel after fighting the NDC MPs and walking out and insulting us over the e-Levy?

“Now Bawumia says you all are short-sighted and not critical in your thinking and analysis. He says your arguments and debates in favour of e-Levy are all bogus and useless. And you were clapping yesterday? Or you were not paying attention? Like I am trying to understand how you must be feeling. Anyway, Ken Ofori-Atta is still Finance Minister after all your complaints. We move,” he added.

He specifically addressed the NPP MPs who had vehemently supported the tax, asking how they felt now that their candidate proposed its cancellation.

Despite their complaints about Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, Sam George concluded his post with a nonchalant “We move.”

“To move towards a cashless economy, however, we have to encourage the population to use electronic channels of payment. To accomplish this, there will be no taxes on digital payments under my administration. The e-levy will, therefore, be abolished,” he said at the UPSA auditorium on February 7.

Dr. Bawumia, who serves as both Vice President and the NPP’s flagbearer, had announced during a manifesto delivery at the UPSA auditorium on February 7 that, if elected President, he would eliminate the E-levy as part of a broader strategy to promote a cashless economy.

TV series, Suits Reboot won’t feature Meghan Markle – Reports

Meghan Markle will not be featured in the upcoming Suits reboot, titled Suits: LA, despite writers creating a seemingly perfect role for her.

However, there were attempts to involve her company, Archewell, in the production.

Reports emerged last month about the spin-off series, reigniting speculation about the Duchess of Sussex’s potential involvement.

Exclusive sources close to the new show have now confirmed to DailyMail.com that Meghan has no plans to act in the series, although a character seemingly tailored for her was present.

While Meghan, 42, has chosen not to participate as an actor, insiders suggest she may have considered involvement in another capacity – as an executive producer through her production company Archewell.

However, NBC reportedly rejected this idea.

Despite Archewell sources denying any involvement, the insider claimed, “Meghan was clear that she didn’t want to be involved as an actor. But Archewell was trying to wiggle its way in as a production company on the spin-off.”

Meghan, renowned for her role as paralegal Rachel Zane in the original Suits series from 2011 to 2019, left the show in 2017 due to her relationship with Prince Harry.

Last summer, the legal drama unexpectedly became the most-streamed show in the US for 12 consecutive weeks after its addition to Netflix. Patrick J. Adams, who portrayed Meghan’s love interest in the series, fueled rumors of a reboot with deleted behind-the-scenes images.

In September, reports surfaced about the Suits spin-off, now titled Suits: LA, developed by creator Aaron Korsh.

Set in the same universe as the original but in Los Angeles, it introduces new characters, with production scheduled to start in March.

Aaron created a character, Erica, seemingly ideal for Meghan, described as an African-American career-focused Californian woman in her 30s. Meghan, reacting to the show’s resurgence, expressed her surprise and noted the enduring popularity of good shows.

While many original Suits stars reunited at the Golden Globes in January, Meghan was notably absent. Gina Torres admitted they didn’t have Meghan’s number, and the rest of the cast kept in touch via a WhatsApp group.

Patrick expressed his amazement at the show’s revived popularity and his willingness to reprise his role. The cast, excluding Meghan, also reunited for a Super Bowl commercial for E.l.f. Cosmetics.

As the Suits reboot gains momentum, Meghan and Harry, with a development deal at Netflix until September 2025, continue their involvement in film and series projects, including adaptations and unscripted works.

  • Why can’t you show us love like we did for you despite your adulterous ways? – Angel Maxine to Mahama

Why can’t you show us love like we did for you despite your adulterous ways? – Angel Maxine to Mahama

Controversial LGBTQ+ rights activist and transgender musician, Angel Maxine, has posed a thought-provoking question to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.

Angel Maxine’s inquiry revolves around the principles of love and compassion within religious beliefs, particularly concerning allegations of moral transgressions and the LGBTQ+ community.

This comes in response to Mahama’s recent declaration aligning his personal faith with his opposition to LGBTQ+ activities.

Mahama stated, “I am against LGBTQ. I am a member of the Assemblies of God Church, and my faith is against it.”

However, Angel Maxine, using her platform on Instagram, has drawn attention to Mahama’s own experience in 2020 when he faced an alleged adulterous scandal, earning him the colloquial label ‘papanu.’

“You said your faith is  Ghana governed by religion because that is what everybody is riding on. In case you have forgotten what your religion preaches about… Your religion preaches about love, compassion, that is why in 2020 when your adulterous scandal came out that earned you the name ‘papano’ , your religion protected you.

“Your religion showed you love even though adultery is a sin in the bible. So, if your religion can show you love, show you compassion for being an adulturous man that is a sin in the bible. Why can’t your religion  show love to the LGBQT community,” Angel Maxine.

Despite the moral transgression, Maxine pointed out that Mahama was shielded and shown love within his religious community.

Maxine is recognized for her advocacy against the passage of the LGBTQ+ community Bill, which proposes the criminalization of same-sex relationships.

The anti-LGBT bill, which has been widely criticised by human rights groups and foreign governments, is currently being debated in parliament.

The Bill extends its reach to encompass relationships between a person and an animal or object, suggesting imprisonment terms ranging from 3 to 5 years.

“No gree” for Bawumia’s empty promises – Sam George to Ghanaians

Ningo-Prampram’s Member of Parliament (MP), Sam George, has expressed his steadfast stance against what he perceives as unfulfilled promises by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasizing a lack of tolerance for deceit.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Sam George cautioned Ghanaians against being misled by Bawumia’s statements, utilizing the Nigerian slang ‘no gree for anybody’ to convey the importance of not succumbing to manipulation or deception.

Citing instances where he believes Bawumia has fallen short, Sam George pointed to the disputed claim of digitizing corruption at the passport office, challenging the authenticity of Bawumia’s digitization assertions.

He also criticized the repeated promises made by Bawumia regarding Ghana Card numbers for children from birth, highlighting the inconsistency in the announcements.

Sam George went on to question Bawumia’s credibility, citing unfulfilled promises such as the construction of 350 schools and the delay in providing laptops to teachers who had paid for them.

“When Dr. Bawumia talks, digitization has taken over corruption at the passport office, did you not see Minister for Foreign Affairs storm the place very angry to sack ‘goro boys’? So where was the digitization? Even that claim of digitization has been disputed by the Daily Graphic report of September 2016 when that project was launched. Even the fact-check Ghana has called Dr. Bawumia a liar for putting out such fake information. A man’s words are what you will judge him on. This is the same person who made promises that they will build 350 schools, promising tertiary student loan for laptops, meanwhile, he has taken money from teachers and they have not gotten their laptops yet.

“He promises that children will now get unique Ghana Card numbers from birth. This is a story that was first announced by Bawumia in November 2021. He again announced in April 2022, in June 2022, February 2023, and April 2023, so this is the 6th time Bawumia is making such a promise. The macro indicators Bawumia gave are false and misleading and you sit and ask who are his advisors.”

The Ningo-Prampram MP further stated that, “You say you are the one responsible for all digitization stuff yet you say, as for the E-Levy, I am not part of it. I mean this is a man we have come to know, to understand and recognize him for who he is, that he is a confident trickster, and he is someone who is going to trick the words and use fluency and eloquence bamboozle through Ghanaians. Right now, our eyes are open and this year, 2024, the motto is ‘no gree for anybody’ not even Bawumia and his lies.”

He criticized Bawumia’s role in the controversial E-Levy, emphasizing the contradictory statement that he is not part of it despite being responsible for digitization efforts.

The Ningo-Prampram MP characterized Bawumia as a “confident trickster” and urged Ghanaians to be wary of his eloquence and fluency in delivering promises. With the motto for 2024 being ‘no gree for anybody,’ Sam George conveyed a clear message of skepticism towards Bawumia and his alleged lies.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s Flagbearer, recently announced plans to abolish the E-Levy, Bet Tax, and Emissions Tax if elected as the President of Ghana.

This announcement follows the introduction of the controversial E-Levy in 2022, which had initially faced opposition from Bawumia.

Marking the 150th Anniversary of the Sagrenti War between the Asantes and the British Colonial Army in 1874, a grand durbar of chiefs convened in Asanteman on Thursday, February 8th.

Named “Kuntunkuni,” the commemorative durbar carried a distinctive tone, with the Asantehene and select traditional rulers clad in all-black attire, symbolizing the gravity of the historical event.

Distinguished political figures, including the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama; the Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; and the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, graced the occasion.

Paramount chiefs, sub-divisional chiefs, and queen mothers from the Ashanti Kingdom added to the significance of the event, creating a gathering of cultural and political prominence.

Social media shared visuals of the durbar, capturing the vibrant display of Akan tradition and cultural heritage showcased during the event.

The arrival of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, marked a pinnacle moment, bringing the durbar to a temporary standstill. His regal entrance, on a palanquin amidst spirited singing, drumming, and dancing, captivated the audience.

Edwesohemaa, Nana Yaa Asantewaa II, added to the spectacle with her entrance, arriving in a palanquin and firing into the sky.

The presence of the executioners of Asanteman (abrafoɔ) in their ancestral garb, one holding a decapitated fowl in a symbolic gesture, contributed to the visual richness of the event.

Notably, the durbar featured the formal presentation of Ashanti artifacts, including a royal stool belonging to Asantehene Kofi Karikari, the 10th Asantehene.

This presentation underscored the historical and cultural significance of the occasion, further cementing the link between past and present in the Ashanti Kingdom.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II cautioned against overlooking the Ashanti Kingdom, emphasizing that those in power who disregard its significance will face consequences.

“You cannot take the Ashanti Kingdom out of anything concerning this country. “I mean, this is Dr. Bawumia and I knew we were going to get an inspiring vision statement from him, but even I must admit that what he delivered is mind blowing. Far beyond inspiration, Dr. Bawumia gave us real hope that the average Ghanaian can trust in”, the MCE said in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the address.

In the address, Dr. Bawumia pledged to abolish the unpopular e-levy, recognizing its burden on the less privileged in society. He also outlined plans to reform the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to broaden the tax net, addressing the current imbalance where only a few taxpayers bear the burden.

Characterizing the current tax regime as outdated and inherited from colonial times, Dr. Bawumia highlighted existing loopholes that result in the GRA failing to collect approximately 13% of collectable tax, amounting to around GHC24 billion.

Mr Amarh Ashitey praised Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to closing these loopholes, foreseeing a positive impact on the need for future IMF borrowings or bailouts.

“Imagine that we are able to plug this loophole, there will never be the need to return to the IMF to borrow or undergo another bailout,” Amarh Ashitey said.

Additionally, the MCE lauded Dr. Bawumia’s announcements to abolish the proposed 15% tax on electricity, emission tax, and the betting tax, which has been a source of dissatisfaction for many Ghanaian youth.

In response to criticism, especially from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding Dr. Bawumia’s reversal of taxes introduced by the Akufo-Addo government, Ashitey dismissed it as an attempt to use propaganda to conceal the discredited claim that Dr. Bawumia would be subservient to President Akufo-Addo if elected president.

According to Ashitey, Dr. Bawumia’s decisions demonstrate his autonomy and assertiveness, showcasing his genuine stance on issues that he may have disagreed with during his role as Vice President.

“We are seeing a vintage Dr. Bawumia who disagreed with many of the policies that were adopted by cabinet now asserting his own point of view on these issues. His decision to abolish e-levy, tax on betting, and tax on electricity shows you that he was against them but because he was not the president, was forced to endure them. Now that he is becoming his own man, we are seeing what really he wants for Ghanaians”, he said.

Government should be blamed for loss of 500,000 hectares cocoa farms – Minority

Eric Opoku, the spokesperson for agriculture from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised concerns about the significant loss of over 500,000 hectares of cocoa farms in Ghana attributed to the Cocoa Swollen Shoot Viral Disease (CSSVD).

The Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, sees this loss as a failure on the part of the government to effectively execute the Cocoa Rehabilitation Project (CRP).

The CRP, an initiative by the Government of Ghana under the Economic Recovery Program (ERP) supervised by the World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), aimed to eradicate diseased and unproductive cocoa trees. The plan was to replace them with hybrid cocoa seedlings to enhance yields.

However, Mr. Opoku, speaking on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, expressed dissatisfaction with the program’s execution, stating that the allocated funds were not efficiently utilized.

Mr Opoku continued, emphasizing that the program had not been effectively implemented, and he called for a critical examination of the issues surrounding the Cocoa Rehabilitation Project.

“I have difficulty appreciating the 500,000 hectares that the Chief Executive is talking about because around 2018, specifically in October 2020 when the President launched the cocoa rehabilitation program in Sehwi Wiawso, he indicated that a survey had been conducted by COCOBOD and the period from 2006 to 2017, and the survey indicated that the cocoa swollen shoot disease had covered 17% of all the total farmlands under cocoa production. And the total farmland under cocoa production was estimated at 1.9 million hectares. And so we are talking about 17%… It was something alarming, and we needed immediate action, and that was why Ghana had to go and borrow $600 million for cocoa replanting. So I am surprised that today the disease is consuming as much as 500,000, over 25%.”

“…The program has not been properly implemented… We must interrogate the issues critically,” he stated.
