Lagos: Student allegedly flogged to death by teacher

A tragic incident has been reported at Araromi Ilogbo Secondary School in Oko Afo, Lagos, where a teacher allegedly flogged a student to death.

The unfortunate event, which took place on Thursday, resulted in the passing of 16-year-old David Babadipo, who had been reportedly unwell for several days.

Students from Araromi Ilogbo Secondary School organized a protest in response to the news of their peer’s demise, attributing it to excessive flogging by a teacher identified as Mr. Oluwale.

Following the corporal punishment, Babadipo was urgently taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later declared dead.

A video circulating on social media depicted the chaotic scenes at the school, capturing students running in disarray within and outside the premises.

According to a voice in the video, the deceased student was allegedly flogged by Mr. Oluwale when attempting to leave the school premises for a purchase.

“First and foremost, Mr Oluwale is a Vice Principal and he didn’t beat him for not paying attention in class because he doesn’t teach, he didn’t even beat him at all.

“That child has (sic) been sick since Tuesday and the parent didn’t take him to the hospital. It got worse yesterday afternoon after the break and they called his parent to come to pick him up,” she wrote.

Adding to the conflicting accounts, another Facebook user Bangose Jide posted; “Teacher beat David Babadipo, 16-year-old to death at Araromi-Ilogbo Senior Secondary School, Oko-Afo. The teacher is named Mr Olawale, a vice principal.”

Another social media user, Mama Sassy D, posted; “This is my vicinity. They have started rioting already. The said teacher might not survive this period.”

However, conflicting reports surfaced, with a Facebook user named Esther Wusu contesting the claim that the student was flogged to death.

Wusu stated that Mr. Oluwale was the school’s vice principal, did not administer any punishment, and clarified that Babadipo had been unwell since Tuesday. The worsening condition prompted a call to his parents for immediate pick-up.

Despite these conflicting accounts, another Facebook user, Bangose Jide, asserted that Mr. Olawale, a vice principal, beat David Babadipo to death at Araromi-Ilogbo Senior Secondary School. The situation escalated on social media, with Mama Sassy D reporting ongoing riots in the vicinity and expressing concern for the teacher’s safety during this period.

He introduced his campaign under the slogan “breaking the 2” and the motto “yee gye aye no yie,” meaning “we are taking over governance to make it work for all.”

He also outlined his plans to eradicate the menace of galamsey in the country.

According to him intends to establish alternative livelihoods, including carbon credit harvesting and the creation of a hemp industry, specifically for the youth engaged in galamsey and others interested in these sectors.

Additionally, he proposed the enforcement of existing laws and the introduction of new legislation where necessary to address any existing loopholes.

“We need to break the foothold the NDC and the NPP have had in Ghana. It is now clear than ever that until we break ourselves from the two non-performing conjoined twins, we shall continue to have presidents that serve their parties and supporters and not the totality of Ghanaians,” he said.

Highlighting the failure of the two major political parties over the past 32 years to fulfill promises made to improve the lives of Ghanaians, Twum-Barima-Adu emphasized the need for Ghanaians to break away from the dominance of the NPP and the NDC.

Twum-Barima-Adu emphasized that his administration would require government entities, including State Owned Enterprises, to seek approval through government review before entering into contracts.

He also pledged to reduce public expenditure by adhering to the constitutionally approved number of 19 cabinet ministers, with a total ministerial count limited to 63.

Staying in Ghana is like living in Europe – Nigerian man

A Nigerian man residing in Ghana has claimed that the neighboring country has transformed into the Europe of Nigeria.

Despite potential skepticism from fellow Nigerians, the individual insists on sharing compelling reasons behind this assertion, backed by personal experiences in Ghana.

In a viral video, the Nigerian resident attested to a level of civic amenities and responsiveness that align with the standards one might associate with a European setting.

Notably, the Nigerian man  highlighted having access to reliable electricity through an ECG number, with prompt responsiveness from the service provider when issues arise.

Similarly, the individual emphasised the efficiency of utilities, citing responsive water services that promptly address concerns when reported.

“I know a lot of Nigerians will not accept this but as a Nigerian living in Ghana let me tell you Ghana is now the Europe of Nigeria, whether you like it or not. Ask me why and I will prove it,” he added.

Perhaps more significantly, the Nigerian resident underscored the accessibility of emergency services, citing a readily available police number for urgent situations.

Going beyond conventional expectations, the resident even noted instances where the police provided transportation assistance.

His comparison extended to the economic realm, with the claim that Ghana’s currency currently holds a favorable position against the Nigerian currency.

“As I dey Ghana like this. I get an ECG number if I don’t have light, if I call them they will answer me.  If my water is not working I call and they will answer. I have police number to call for an emergency. They will even give lift. Ghana’s current money beats Nigeria’s money. I hope I have convinced my fellow Nigerians that Ghana is the Europe of Nigeria,” he emphasised.

I have been drinking the sperms of my pastor for 2 years – Church member recounts

A 28-year-old Ghanaian woman has disclosed a disturbing practice she undertook in a 2-year relationship with her spiritual father, Edwin Kwabena Antwi-Boasiako.

Speaking on Oyerepa FM she stated that her spiritual father who is the founder of New Era, a church located at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region made her drink his sperm whenever they have an intercourse.

She added that the consistent practice of swallowing her pastor’s sperm, according to the pastor, it is advantageous to her health.

She claimed that the pastor said drinking her sperm could heal her waist pains and all other things that could pose risk to her immune system.

According to her, she never wanted any intimate relationship with her spiritual father because he knew he was a married man.

However, she succumbed to his lies and manipulations with the reason that he promised to divorce his wife and marry her.

The 28-year-old woman stated that she initially refused to accept the pastor’s proposal but eventually agreed because what he said wasn’t good enough for him.

According to her, associating herself with the man of God is something she regrets doing, as he has asked all her suitors.

“He told me all the guys I brought to him have no future for me and that if he wasn’t married he would have married me instead. He later told me his wife was giving him problems  and the spirit in him wants him to divorce her and marry me. I refused when he said that initially but eventually I accepted,” she revealed.

Additionally she revealed that the pastor once got her pregnant and later suggested that she holds another guy responsible, since that was going to be an embarrassment on his part.

She indicated that when she refused to pay heed to the pastor’s proposal the pastor bought her drugs to terminate the pregnancy.

As per her account she got rid of the pregnancy and made an attempt to part ways with her spiritual father but that was obstructed because he promised to marry her.

“The pastor and I have been dating for 2 years. He takes me to hotels to have sex with me and makes me drink his sperm because he said the doctor says it’s good. He got me pregnant and asked me to hold a different guy responsible. He asked me to abort when I refused. He later bought me a medicine to terminate the pregnancy. After the abortion I decided to part ways with him but he refused to let me go; promising me marriage. If not for the pastor I would have been married and left Ghana. He doesn’t like it when I make calls. He sacked all my suitors from me,”she added.

She also revealed how her fiance lured her into taking a loan for him in her  name but ended up paying the loan and its interest because he refused to pay.

“This man of God convinced me into taking a loan for him in my name. He promised to  pay the loan and the interests. After paying the 1st and the second time he became reluctant in paying the rest. Whenever I confront him on when he is going to pay the subsequent ones he becomes angry. I have taken this man as my spiritual father so whenever a guy proposes to me, I ask him to see if the guy is the right person for me.

She stated that there was always an uproar whenever she inquired about the loan; because that was the initial agreement they had.

“He told me all the guys I brought to him have no future for me and that if he wasn’t married he would have married me instead. He later told me his wife was giving him problems  and the spirit in him wants him to divorce her and marry me. I refused when he said that initially but eventually I accepted, “ she indicated .

Former Second Lady, Matilda Amissah-Arthur, attacked by robbers – Report

In December 2023, the residence of the former Second Lady of Ghana, Matilda Amissah-Arthur, reportedly witnessed a troubling incident.

Despite the considerable police presence, an armed robber managed to breach security measures.

Under the cover of night, a masked and armed assailant infiltrated the Tesano house in Accra.

Mrs. Amissah-Arthur, widow of the late ex-Vice President Kwasi Amissah-Arthur, was confronted by the lone robber, who seized her neck and demanded money and jewelry.

In response to the threat, the former Second Lady handed over an estimated US$3000 to the assailant, who promptly fled the scene, allowing her to secure her freedom.

The apprehended perpetrator is currently in police custody, although the Ghana Police Service has maintained silence on the matter, leaving the nature of the security breach in question.

Sources from the Police Headquarters disclose that the arrested individual has faced the scrutiny of the top hierarchy of the police service. Notably, the victim’s identity, Matilda Amissah-Arthur, was obscured in official communications, with references to her as “Mrs. Atta.”

Despite the arrest, the case is being deliberately kept low-profile, triggering speculation, especially considering the extensive security network surrounding the residence.

Queries arise regarding how the armed robber, suspected to have an accomplice, successfully infiltrated the former Second Lady’s house.

Upon further investigation, it was revealed that Matilda Amissah-Arthur had temporarily vacated her residence for medical reasons. Security sources suggest that the escalating insecurity in the country is affecting even the elite, whose homes boast advanced security measures.

The Ghana Police Service’s decision to maintain silence on the matter raises suspicions given the circumstances. Family sources are urgently calling on the Ghana Police Service, the National Security Agency, and the Ministry of Interior to provide an update on the unfortunate incident.

Upon closer examination, it became apparent that the same modus operandi had been employed in some other high-profile officials’ residences in Accra, though the police have chosen to remain silent on the matter. Despite the presence of police officers on duty during the robbery attack, the circumstances surrounding the breach remain veiled in mystery.

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has taken the step to close its basic schools in response to an ongoing industrial action by various unions within the educational sector.

Effective from Tuesday, January 30, 2024, until further notice, the closure is a precautionary measure amidst the current labor dispute involving the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), the Senior Staff Association – Universities of Ghana (SSA-UG), and the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA).

University Registrar, A. K. Boateng officially announced the decision, citing concerns for the safety and well-being of students and staff during the ongoing labor dispute.

The closure of KNUST Basic Schools further compounds the challenges faced by educational institutions amid the labor dispute, raising concerns about the continuity of academic activities and student welfare.

Dr. Daniel Norris Bekoe, the University Relations Officer of KNUST, highlighted the detrimental impact of the strike on the university’s workflow. He stressed the need for urgent engagement among stakeholders to address the unions’ grievances and find mutually beneficial solutions.

More than 50% of Ghanaian pregnant women suffering from Anaemia – GSS

A recent study undertaken by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has indicated that more than half of pregnant women in the country suffer from anaemia, contrasting with 40 percent of non-pregnant women.

The findings, outlined in the 2022 Demographic and Health Survey, highlight the prevalence of anaemia among children aged 6-59 months in households, with the highest rates observed in the Northern region at 69 percent and Ahafo at 35 percent.

Notably, the survey reflects a decline in anaemia prevalence among children since 2008 when it peaked at 78 percent.

Anaemia among adults, known for its adverse health effects like fatigue and lethargy, remains a significant concern, particularly among pregnant women, as it can contribute to heightened maternal mortality and unfavorable birth outcomes.

The report also sheds light on the frequency of caesarean operations, revealing that urban areas exhibit a higher incidence (27 percent) compared to rural areas (15 percent). Approximately 21 percent of live births in the two years preceding the survey were delivered through caesarean operations.

In terms of HIV knowledge, the survey uncovered that two percent of women aged 15–49 engaged in sexual activity with multiple partners in the year leading up to the survey.

Of this group, only 12 percent reported using condoms during their last sexual encounter. Similarly, 15 percent of men aged 15–49 acknowledged having multiple sexual partners, with 18 percent of them using condoms during their last sexual activity.

Dr. Chris Opoku Fofie, Deputy Director in Charge of Reproductive and Child Health at the Ghana Health Service, emphasized the significance of the survey in providing timely information for authorities to develop comprehensive policies addressing identified issues. Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, Director-General of the Ghana Aids Commission, called for the creation of an enabling legal policy to tackle the HIV/AIDS challenge.

The survey, the seventh of its kind conducted in Ghana since 1988, aimed to furnish data for monitoring population and health dynamics. It involved a nationally representative sample of 15,014 women aged 15–49 in 17,933 households and 7,044 men aged 15–49 in half of the selected households, achieving a remarkable response rate of 98 percent among women and 97 percent among men.

Funding for the survey was provided by various organizations, including USAID, UNICEF, UNFPA, the World Bank, the Global Fund, KOICA, the World Health Organization, and the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office.

  • I have faith in Mahama, he will not disappoint Ghana – Alhaji Sinare

I have faith in Mahama, he will not disappoint Ghana – Alhaji Sinare

A former National Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Ambassador Said Sinare, has urged Ghanaians to repose faith in the party’s leader, John Mahama, and vote for him in the upcoming December polls.

Mr Sinare asserted that unlike President Akufo-Addo, who, in his view, has led many Ghanaians into poverty, former President John Mahama, the NDC’s flagbearer, will perform better and enhance the lives of the citizens.

During an interview on Dwaboase on TV XYZ with Kwame Minkah, Alhaji Sinare expressed confidence that John Mahama, if elected, will exceed his previous performance and bring positive change to the country.

Sinare emphasized that Mahama, despite having only one term to serve if elected, is well-prepared to address the country’s challenges.

He assured, “John will not fail the good people of this great country. When John comes back to power, he will double what he did when he came to power in 2012.”

Regarding how a future NDC government would revitalize the economy, Sinare mentioned that Mahama and the party have outlined policies to tackle wastage, corruption, and rebuild the economy.

He underscored the importance of discipline and economic structure, criticizing what he perceives as “wastage” in the governance of the NPP. Sinare highlighted the NDC’s commitment to transforming the health sector and improving healthcare accessibility.

Mr Sinare questioned the concentration of the country’s only dialysis center in Accra and pledged that the NDC government would establish dialysis centers in government hospitals nationwide.

Discussing plans for Zongos (predominantly Muslim communities), Alhaji Sinare stressed that the NDC, despite having already delivered projects in Zongo communities, is committed to continuing these initiatives if they win the 2024 elections.

He criticized the current government for allegedly failing to fulfill promises to Zongo communities, except for astro turfs. Sinare pledged that under Mahama’s leadership, the NDC would focus on improving lives, boosting employment, and addressing infrastructure needs in Zongo communities.

“I m a Zongo boy. All the promises the government has made to the Zongo communities, they have failed to fulfil them. Apart from the astro turfs, what have they done?” Alhaji Sinare quizzed. “They have totally failed; they have not done anything for Zongos.”

He added, “We are going to improve their lives, we are going to make sure we put money in peoples’ pockets, we will tackle unemployment in the Zongo communities….And the health facilities for instance, their roads facilities, their schools. These are the basic things the Zongo needs. I know John Mahama will not disappoint.”

Be wary when making public utterances – Obiri Boahen to Wontumi

Former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has urged NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, to be more cautious in his public statements.

This advice follows Chairman Wontumi’s clearance by Manhyia over an alleged disrespectful comment towards the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Obiri Boahen, speaking on Okay FM on January 30, 2024, commended Bantemahene Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI for his handling of the matter.

He emphasized the need for discretion in language, advising all NPP executives, including himself, to carefully choose their words in the public domain.

In the interview, Obiri Boahen stated, “You see, I will give advice on both sides. The Bantemahene did very well; he handled the issue well…I will advise Chairman Wontumi to exercise discretion in his language because we have to consider where we are, the environment, the people, and what we are about to say.

“So, the advice I will give to Chairman Wontumi and all NPP executives, including myself, is that we should be careful with our words,” he said.

He added “And the chiefs also, they have to be careful a bit because if the Kokosohene did not go and report this, I am not sure all these things would have come up,” added Obiri Boahen.

He also highlighted the role of the chiefs, urging them to exercise caution and avoid bringing political issues to the Manhyia Palace.

The Asanteman Traditional Council dropped charges against Chairman Wontumi after a hearing, advising the accuser, Kokosuhene Nana Kwaku Duah, to refrain from involving political matters in the Manhyia Palace.

  • You don’t vote for NPP that is why your roads are bad – Mahama tells Krobo constituents

You don’t vote for NPP that is why your roads are bad – Mahama tells Krobo constituents

Former president, John Dramani Mahama has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of neglecting road infrastructure in the Krobo area, citing perceived political bias as the root cause.

Mahama’s comments are prompted by President Akufo-Addo’s recent statements on developmental challenges in Ekumfi and Mepe, suggesting that areas not aligned with the NPP face development neglect.

Mahama expressed disapproval of what he sees as discriminatory remarks, emphasizing the need for a president to use inclusive language.

Addressing stakeholders in Agormanya, Mahama criticizes Akufo-Addo’s approach, stating, “A President should not talk like that,” and underscores the importance of fair and unbiased development distribution.

Mahama pointed out his disappointment with the neglected state of Krobo roads, attributing it to the president’s alleged disregard for areas where his party lacks support.

“I was saddened when I drove on the road today but I am not surprised because this President has decided not to develop parts of the country where his party doesn’t get votes. Because he went to Mepe during the flood disaster and said he came because he is President because the people don’t vote for him,” Mahama said.

He added “a President should not talk like that. Recently, the people of Ekumfi visited him and they appealed for development only for President Akufo Addo to tell them because they voted against his MP. So I am not surprised he has neglected Krobo people because everybody knows your political affiliation. That is why for the past 8 years your roads have been left to deteriorate”.

Mahama reassured that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) does not engage in discrimination and pledges an equitable distribution of development if the party comes into power.

As part of his two-day Building Ghana campaign tour in the Eastern region starting on January 30, 2024, the NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, aims to engage with communities and key stakeholders to underscore the party’s commitment to national development.

In 2021, the region recorded the highest number of murder cases, totaling at least 72, with 68 males and five females among the victims, according to data from the Statistics Research and Monitoring Unit (SRMU) of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. The data shows that 306 murder cases were reported to the police from January 1 to June 30 of that year.

Give GRA boss a contract if you can’t replace him- Austin Gamey tells govt

Labour analyst Austin Gamey has recommended that the appointing authorities issue a formal employment contract to the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah.

This advice comes in response to concerns raised about the commissioner’s extended tenure beyond his retirement age without proper contractual documentation.

The issue gained attention during a Public Accounts Committee sitting on Monday, January 29, 2024, where Member of Parliament Sam Nartey George exposed Owusu-Amoah for serving over two years without a formal contract.

Gamey stressed the illegality of public servants holding office beyond retirement age without a written contract, especially in the GRA commissioner’s case.

While acknowledging that some public servants may continue under casual arrangements, he emphasized the need for a legal contract.

During an interview on Eyewitness News on Tuesday, January 30, 2024, Mr Gamey suggested that if the appointing committee believes there is no immediate replacement for Owusu-Amoah, they should address the issue by providing him with a written employment contract.

“For now, the reality is that if you are 60 years old and you are in public services, you are first of all supposed to be told that you have attained the retirement age and therefore you quit the job. But some are given contracts and these contracts are not casual work. It is only casual work under our law that in certain circumstances, it will be a gentlemanly agreement to change the party employee and employed. But this one is not a casual job that was supposed to be done in a week or a month.

“If there is no one to replace him, the employer should give him a written contract of employment,” he stated.

After 58 years since the passing of the late Dr. Joseph Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah, the Ofori Panin Fie, led by Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, is poised to carry out the ultimate funeral rites for the late scholar and politician.

At the time of his demise, JB Danquah held the position of Twafohene of Okyeman, known by the stool name Barima Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Dankwa I.

The event is slated for February 10, 2024, on the forecourt of Ofori Panin Fie in Kyebi, Eastern Region.

The Twafohene stool had remained vacant since Barima Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Dankwa I’s passing until the enstoolment of Katakyie Kwame Boakye Dankwa II on December 16, 2023, as the successor to his grandfather.

In adherence to customs, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council announced that the new Twafo stool occupant would organize a memorial service for his predecessor on Sunday, February 4, 2024.

The final funeral rite, known as “Dɔteyie,” will follow on February 10, 2024, where the late Twafohene’s mortal remains will lie in state for chiefs, queens, royals, and mourners to pay their respects.

According to royal traditions, the final funeral rites of a chief or queen can only proceed if a successor is enstooled to occupy the vacant black stool.

Okatakyie Ababio Boakye Danquah, the new Twafohene, pledged allegiance to Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin last year.

The distinguished J.B. Danquah, known for his contributions to politics, scholarship, law, statesmanship, and traditional leadership, passed away on February 4, 1965.

The upcoming final funeral rites are expected to attract Akyem land indigenes, traditional rulers from across the nation, politicians, clergy, and other prominent figures, commemorating JB Danquah’s legacy 58 years after his demise.

Bogoso Prestea: Future Global Resources currently not under care, maintenance – Minerals Commission

The Minerals Commission has clarified that it has not received any formal application from the operators of the Prestea-Bogoso Mine, currently managed by Future Global Resources (FGR) Bogoso Prestea Limited and Blue International Holdings Limited.

The mine, facing operational challenges, has yet to submit a formal request for care and maintenance.

Despite FGR making a verbal presentation to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources proposing care and maintenance, the Minerals Commission emphasizes that no formal application has been officially submitted.

According to the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), any request to suspend production must follow a procedure outlined in section 51, including serving a notice to the Minister, which FGR has not done.

“For the avoidance of doubt, neither the Ministry nor Commission has received a formal application or request from FGR to put the Mine under Care and Maintenance,” the statement read in part.

Complicating matters, the Commission had issued a notice to FGR in August 2023, identifying breaches and prompting corrective actions. With the notice expiring in December 2023, the Commission is poised to advise the minister on subsequent steps.

Despite challenges, the Commission reaffirms its commitment to effective management of mineral resources, focusing on safeguarding investments in the Prestea-Bogoso Mine to preserve jobs, stimulate the local economy, foster community development, and generate revenue for Ghana.

These developments follow demonstrations by employees and host communities expressing concerns about FGR’s management of the mine.

The host communities’ chiefs and people have petitioned the Sector Ministry, citing a decline in the mine’s performance over the past three years and seeking clarification on FGR’s planned financial investment and corporate social responsibility.

The chiefs appeal for the ministry to explore new investors or take over operations for the benefit of the country and communities.

Endorsing vote buying paves way for unqualified MPs to dominate parliament – ACEPA Boss to Ghanaians

The Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr. Rasheed Draman, has expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of vote buying by politicians during elections.

Vote buying involves contestants in an election using monetary or other incentives to sway the electorate in their favor.

According to Dr. Draman, it is evident that individuals with substantial financial resources are winning over voters, sidelining experienced and competent candidates. He believes this trend is detrimental to democracy.

“I can tell you on authority that some of the people who have decided not to contest, some of them lament that those who have come with big moneys to replace them, are people who perhaps are ill-prepared, with very little no education to go into parliament. You get them in there, and certainly quality is going to be affected.

Dr. Draman highlighted that some individuals who opt not to run for office lament that those with significant financial backing replacing them may lack adequate preparation and education for parliamentary duties. This, in turn, could compromise the overall quality of parliamentary proceedings.

Speaking on Ghana Tonight on TV3 with Alfred Ocansey on January 29, Dr. Draman warned of the potential infiltration of drug money into the democratic system if vote buying is not addressed.

He emphasized that allowing democracy to become a bidding war may lead to funds from illegitimate sources influencing the political landscape, posing significant national security implications.

Expressing concern for the future, Dr. Draman predicted a crisis in the next two election cycles if the issue is not tackled promptly.

He envisioned a scenario where financially well-endowed individuals dominate parliamentary seats, potentially sidelining experienced MPs who lack substantial financial backing.

Dr. Draman called for scrutiny into the funding sources of these wealthy candidates and questioned the motives behind such financial support, emphasizing the need to assess its impact on the quality of democracy.

The Executive Director of the African Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), Dr. Rasheed Draman, has admonished Ghanaians who will cast their votes in the 2024 elections to desist from selling their rights to politicians.

According to him, accepting cash from some politicians in the bid to secure seats in parliament comes with repercussions in the future.

He argued that Ghana is experiencing a crisis due to the act of accepting cash from politicians during elections since most of them are not competent for the role.

Vote buying involves contestants in an election using monetary or other incentives to sway the electorate in their favor.

  • We all have a role to play in fighting corruption – EOCO

The Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO), has emphasized the collective responsibility of individuals and institutions in the ongoing battle against corruption in Ghana.

During an exclusive interview with 3News’ Beatrice Adu on Monday, January 29, 2024 she highlighted the prevalence of corruption in society, urging collective efforts in combating the issue.

She also stressed the necessity of concrete evidence in prosecuting corruption, emphasizing that everyone, including individuals and institutions, has a role to play in the fight against corruption.

Madam Addo-Danquah called for a collective change of attitude and mindset to effectively combat corruption.

“One thing that we should always remember is that when you are prosecuting corruption, it is not about what you think, it is about the evidence that you have. If you don’t have evidence, you don’t have a case. That is what the public must understand. People make wild allegations but when it comes to evidence, they chicken out,“ she said in an exclusive interview with 3News’ Beatrice Adu on January 29 at a CDD event Accra.

“I am concerned, everybody should be concerned. What do we have to do? We must all put our hands together and we must fight whatever is fighting us. That is what I can say. The point is that, like the OSP said, if we really need to fight it, then everybody must fight. I have somebody who asked me for support to pay school fees or something.

Then the moment I said I could help, she called me back to say that I should not put it on her MoMo because she is owing MTN, can you imagine. And I did. So, these are small-small things that we think they don’t matter, but they do. It starts from small-small things and become big,” she stated.

“So, everybody must have a change of attitude, mindset, that this is where we are and this is where we want to go. And we must all play a role in the fight against corruption. One person cannot do it. And it’s not about leadership. It’s about everybody playing a role. Whatever is expected you, you do it, whatever is expected of me, I do it. Whatever is expected of institutions, they do it,” Madam Tiwaa stressed.

She further acknowledged the receipt of the docket on the alleged money laundering case involving former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Dapaah.

“I have that, and we are now reviewing, at the appropriate time, we will speak about it. I am not well briefed about the docket, so I don’t want to make any comment on it until we review it. The most important thing is that he has handed over, I don’t have any more thing to add,” she explained.

We are yet to review Cecilia Dapaah’s docket – EOCO

The Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, has confirmed the receipt of the docket pertaining to the alleged money laundering case involving former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah.

During an interview with 3News, she conveyed that her office is presently reviewing the docket and emphasized that the matter will be fully addressed at the appropriate time.

“I have that, and we are now reviewing. At the appropriate time, we will speak about it. I am not well-briefed about the docket, so I don’t want to make any comment on it until we review it. The most important thing is that he has handed over; I don’t have anything more to add,” she added.

Touching on the contract awarded by the Ghana Revenue Authority to Strategic Mobilization Limited (SML), Madam Addo-Danquah emphasized that she refrains from discussing matters she is not well-briefed on.

Recalling events from January 25, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) transferred the Cecilia Dapaah case to EOCO, with Special Prosecutor Mr. Kissi Agyebeng highlighting the focus on money laundering falling within EOCO’s mandate.

Approximately 11 months ago, the OSP initiated an investigation into then Sanitation Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah after reports of substantial sums being stolen from her residence by domestic staff.

Cash sums ranging from $590,000 to 2.7 million cedis were discovered at various residences linked to Dapaah, leading to the freezing of her bank accounts.

Despite an unsuccessful attempt to secure court approval, the OSP retained control of the funds and sought court confirmation. However, on January 25, the OSP announced the discontinuation of the case, citing extensive collaborative investigations within and outside Ghana.

“The Office has determined that the crime borders largely on money laundering, which falls within the mandate of EOCO,” he said.

All you need to know about Pentecost’s e-church

In June this year, the Church of Pentecost (CoP) is poised to launch an e-church, expanding its presence into the virtual space.

This initiative aims to bring the church experience to a wider audience through online platforms, fostering a digital community for worship, fellowship, and engagement.

The Chairman of the church, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, revealed this initiative as part of Vision 2028 during the 2024 Global Ministers and Wives Conference at the Pentecost Convention Centre in Gomoa Fetteh, Central Region.

This visionary move is intended to establish a pastor-led, gadget-equipped space for ministering to people in the virtual space.

The ongoing five-day conference, themed “A people of God unleashed to transform their world with the values and principles of the Kingdom of God,” is being attended by over 5,000 ministers and their wives both locally and virtually from more than 150 countries via zoom.

Apostle Nyamekye emphasized that the Vision 2028 initiative is a continuation of the Vision 2023 agenda, extending from 2018 to 2023.

The concept of “unleashing” involves moving members beyond the confines of the church into their spheres of influence for transformation. This transformation includes the conversion of souls and society through the gospel.

The Vision 2028 agenda aligns with the Possessing the Nations mission statement of the Church of Pentecost, focusing on establishing responsible and self-sustaining churches filled with committed, Spirit-filled Christians impacting their communities.

The Chairman explained that each of the 31 thematic areas designated for Vision 2028 has specific strategic objectives.

While the global nature of the church operates in 150 nations as of December 2022, there is recognition that interventions may vary based on contextual relevance. External branches are encouraged to align interventions with the spirit of the vision within their specific contexts.

Vision 2028 seeks to achieve the overall goal of the Possessing the Nations agenda—creating a church where members actively transform worldviews, thoughts, and behaviors with the values and principles of the Kingdom of God.

Unlike Vision 2023, which focused on equipping the church, Vision 2028 emphasizes unleashing the church into society, encouraging every member to have a ministry outside the church, becoming channels of God’s grace to the outside world.

    Bonwire road construction underway

Construction has commenced to address road issues in Bonwire following concerns raised by residents about deteriorating roads affecting neighboring communities, especially impacting the crucial hub for Ghanaian Kente fabric.

Weavers emphasized the negative impact on their businesses and tourist visits.

In response construction workers are actively addressing road problems, bringing significant relief to residents.

Local leaders express hope for the completion of construction works, emphasizing the importance of resolving long-standing road issues in the area.

“All inhabitants of Bonwire have over the years complained about the poor state of roads here. President Akufo-Addo has now listened to our call. Construction works are ongoing in many areas here. With the number of equipment they have brought here, we are hopeful that they will complete construction works before leaving this area,” Nana Poku, an opinion leader at Bonwire noted.

“We were indeed very worried when construction works on various roads here were abandoned. We were suffering because of the dusty road. As a tourist centre, many people were discouraged from visiting this area because of the poor road network. After complaining about this issue over the years, the government is now fixing it for us. We want the government to ensure work is completed to give us the needed respite,” another resident, Degraft Okai Kwabena added.

Drivers, who have faced frequent breakdowns, urge the government to ensure the timely completion of the construction to alleviate ongoing struggles.

“The road projects here have been abandoned for a long time. We have always been complaining about it. Construction works commenced at a certain point but it was later abandoned and some residents even sustained injuries after falling into pits that were created. After we complained again, they resumed work and later halted work. They have once again resumed work but we fear work could be abandoned once again. We don’t want them to trick us because it is an election year and then abandon work again,” a disturbed taxi driver, Prince Boateng stated.

“Armed robbers used to take advantage of the poor road network to attack people here. We want the government to ensure construction works are not halted to give us some sort of relief because we usually experience vehicle breakdowns as a result of the poor state of roads,” Bismark Acheampong, a driver stated.

“We are excited about the ongoing construction works since our vehicles have been breaking down because of the poor roads here. We don’t want work to stall halfway through the construction. If they don’t complete work on the various road projects, we will vote against the government,” Kingsley Oppong Boateng, a driver added.

“The contract is for the rehabilitation of Bonwire junction-Asonomaso road. The entire length is around 11 kilometres. This project was awarded just at the beginning of this year. We are expected to complete it in 24 months’ time. We might not use that two years to complete. We might finish before our time because of the progress that is going on. Kofi Job is a big company. We have our logistics, we have some amount of money that is backing us. With the push of the government, we hope to complete the work in no time,” Kofi Kankam, Project engineer, Kofi Job Company Limited noted.

Contractors responsible for the projects assure the public of their commitment to completing the work on schedule, with necessary allocations secured for an early and successful completion of the rehabilitation project spanning Bonwire junction to Asonomaso, covering approximately 11 kilometers.

  • You can’t wait for an election year to introduce major Electoral Reforms – NDC to EC

You can’t wait for an election year to introduce major Electoral Reforms – NDC to EC

The National Democratic Congress’ Director of Elections, Dr. Omane Boamah, has asserted that the Electoral Commission (EC) cannot conduct the upcoming year’s election in November due to a delayed proposal.

Dr. Boamah emphasizes that major electoral reforms should not be introduced in an election year, especially after a problematic District Level (Assembly) Elections marked by numerous postponements, ballot paper shortages, and complicity among election officers.

On Monday, January 29, the NDC supported changing the national election day but proposed initiating the reform in 2028. This decision followed an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting discussing the EC’s proposal.

Dr. Boamah, in a Facebook post, criticized the EC for waiting seven years after 2016 to revisit the election date issue, only to bring it up when there are just ten clear months until the December 07 presidential and parliamentary elections in Ghana.

“You don’t wait for an election year to introduce major Electoral Reforms: a year in which the EC has so much to do after an abysmal District Level (Assembly) Elections characterised by postponements after postponements, shortage of ballot papers, some Election officers complicity among others,” he added.

He questioned why the EC did not address these matters in the years following 2016 or after the 2020 elections, emphasizing the impracticality of introducing major electoral reforms in an election year when the EC is already burdened.

“Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission’s calendar of programmes and activities for the upcoming elections is not yet ready; hence, could not be released to political parties,” he added.

Dr Boamah queried why the EC waited for January to end without stakeholders having the electoral calendar for the 2024 elections.

“Why did the EC not introduce these discussions, adjustments, and amendments in 2017, 2018, 2019, or better still, why not after the 2020 elections? As in, introducing the subject matter in 2021, 2022, and 2023?”

“This amendment of a non-entrenched clause requires two-thirds of MPs to pass, meanwhile the MPs themselves must be in their constituencies for some parts of this year campaigning, facilitating the registration of voters when the EC finally decides. Not to think of the duration of the process and other germane issues the EC must
bring to the front burner,” he added.

Moreover, Dr. Boamah points out that the EC has not released the calendar of programs and activities for the upcoming elections, making it challenging for political parties to prepare.

He urged the EC to amend Article 112 (4) of the 1992 constitution, highlighting the logistical challenges involved in the process, especially with MPs needing to be in their constituencies for campaigning and voter registration.

In summary, Dr. Omane Boamah criticizes the EC’s timing and approach to electoral reforms, advocating for a more strategic and timely implementation to ensure a smooth electoral process.

FGR Bogoso-Prestea Mine employees stage protest against management

Workers at Future Global Resources Bogoso-Prestea Mines (FGR) are protesting against alleged mismanagement that has adversely affected mine productivity and workers’ payment systems.

The General Secretary of the senior staff union at FGR Bogoso-Prestea Mines, Samuel Kumi Manu, along with other workers, voiced their concerns to Citi News during the demonstration.

They claimed that the mine has witnessed no investment since FGR assumed control in 2020.

In response, they called on the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, to request evidence of FGR’s financial capability.

This, they believe, will determine whether the mine should be retained by FGR or transferred to a more credible investor.

“We want the sector minister, Samuel Abu Jinapor, to take action because we know on record that the minister has, on two occasions, issued ultimatums to FGR to show proof of financial capability. However, on both occasions, FGR has failed to comply. This implies that FGR does not have the means to operate the mine. Therefore, we expect the minister to intervene and transfer it to a credible investor who can inject financial capacity into the operation, as what we lack now is finances.”

Joyce Bawah Mogtari writes on Cecilia Dapaah’s case

We have been stating for years that John Mahama has been a victim of extreme prejudice and political propaganda led sadly by a man whose sole aim was to become president at all costs.

This he could only achieve by destroying his predecessor, a good man, a very patriotic Ghanaian, Nana Akufo-Addo, in the past touted as his friend and a good colleague on the other side of the political divide in parliament.

Recall the Ford vehicle issue and the accusations of corruption against Mr Mahama by the NPP. Let me also mention the bus branding ‘scandal’, which again led to serious accusations, mass mobilisation and condemnation by the NPP and then-candidate Akufo-Addo.

These are two significant examples of how corruption and graft were used as political leverage to justify the claim that the NDC and its leadership were incompetent and incapable of managing the country’s affairs.

It is worth noting that today, Akufo Addo and Bawumia are in power, but they have yet to be able to prove any of these claims. From the actions and omissions of their government, it is obvious to Ghanaians that they are corrupt and comfortable associating with corruption.

The level of dishonesty and disregard for the Ghanaian people by this NPP Government is unprecedented and gravely unimaginable.

This president promised to put his presidency on the line to end galamsey at a time when it was axiomatic that they were and are heavily involved in it. This is manifestly evident in Frimpong Boateng’s report, bearing in mind that the president himself commissioned this work.

How the former Minister has since been treated in the aftermath of the leaked report is now a matter of public record and needs no reiteration.

That galamsey is perpetrated by members of the president’s team and government is confirmed, and it has been established that some NPP members have been using expensive mining equipment without authorisation, raping the state of its natural resources, and destroying our water bodies; whilst Akufo Addo looks on unconcerned.

You may recall the regrettable will of the late Sir John, who left forest concessions, properties, and state lands to his family upon his passing. What is the current status of this matter? Why has the President yet to take action? We are eagerly waiting for the President’s response. Galamsey is still ongoing, causing damage to our water bodies.

Let me also remind you of the recent scandal involving Cecelia Dapaah. This case has only reinforced the accusations of corruption against President Akufo-Addo.

As every Ghanaian predicted, the case has ended. A court ruling has ordered that all the hard currency and amounts in the bank be returned to Cecilia Dapaah.

This decision is a travesty that we are all struggling to understand. The amount of money involved pales in comparison to any alleged corruption claims or allegations under President Mahama.

The OSP has ultimately truncated one of the biggest scandals of all time and an irrefutable opportunity for this Government to prove itself as one willing and able to deal with corruption.

The inability or the desire to fight corruption vehemently has conferred on Akufo-Addo the title of a clearing agent. As he predicted, his ‘dear’ Cecilia Dapaah has been cleared, and what little integrity she has left will be for history to judge.

Mr Mahama was tough enough on corruption, and many instances confirm this. All the allegations of corruption during his first term were actuated by malice and by a trumpeted campaign carefully hatched by the NPP, particularly Akufo Addo and Bawumia, to taint and tarnish the unblemished character of President Mahama.

Ghanaians should be outraged at the mismanagement of the country and join the fight for change to rescue the nation from a failed government.

15-year jail term awarded to driver for defiling minor in church

A 27-year-old driver was given a 15-year prison term for having sex with a 14-year-old girl in a church at Sowutuom.

Enoch Mensah entered a guilty plea to the charge of defilement during his appearance before the Gender Based Violence Court at the Police Headquarters.

Mensah’s own plea resulted in his conviction and sentencing by the court.

Mensah is accused of defiling the victim four times in the complainant’s home in addition to the church grounds.

Innocently following Mensah when he sought her help, the victim defiled the church, as Detective Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei begged the court to impose a deterrent sentence.

In the prosecution’s case, the complainant—a trader who lives in Apotro, close to Sowutuom in Accra—is the mother of the victim, a 14-year-old.

Mensah, a driver, lived in the same area, according to the prosecutor.

The victim assisted the accused in cleaning the church at the Church name withheld in Nsumfa, close to Sowutum, in June 2023.

According to the report, Mensah locked the church, led the victim to an office, and engaged in “unprotected sexual intercourse” with her on a table while admonishing her not to tell anyone.

Mensah proceeded to have four sex encounters with the victim at the complainant’s home, according to the prosecutor.

It will cost NPP to come back to power should it lose 2024 elections – Kusi Boafo

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Public Sector Reforms, Thomas Kusi Boafo, has highlighted the formidable task the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would encounter in making a comeback if they were to lose power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

During an interview on the Wontumi TV/Radio Morning Show with Oheneba Nana Asiedu, Mr. Kusi Boafo highlighted the NDC’s history of causing destruction and undermining successful projects.

He specifically mentioned infrastructural endeavors like the Suame interchange and the Boankra inland port, as well as policies such as the Free SHS, asserting that the NDC lacks a track record of implementing transformative policies.

“The policies and programs implemented by this government, if not safeguarded by winning the 2024 elections, the financial implications to repair damages caused by the NDC and secure victory in the next elections would surpass the costs of winning the election itself,” he stated.

Mr. Kusi Boafo pointed out the NDC’s tendency for visionless governance and leaving damages in their wake after their term in office. He criticized their practice of showcasing NPP’s infrastructure projects in numerous volumes of the ‘Green Book’ during their tenure.

Additionally, he praised Chairman Wontumi for his individual qualities and significant contributions to the party as a Regional Chairman.

Mr. Kusi Boafo expressed confidence that Chairman Wontumi’s name would be forever etched in the party’s history due to his consummate leadership, passion, and lifelong dedication to his chairmanship role. He advised caution, urging Chairman Wontumi to be wary of those around him, as they could potentially contribute to his downfall.

Your activities for 2024 elections must be made public – NDC tells EC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to promptly unveil the calendar of activities for the upcoming election year.

Additionally, the NDC is emphasizing the need for the EC to prioritize vital tasks aimed at bolstering the integrity of the December 7, 2024, elections.

In a recent Facebook post, the Director of Elections for the NDC, Dr. Omane Boamah, emphasized that moving forward, the EC should take decisive actions, including penalizing officials who engage in election rigging and addressing instances of open political affiliations by EC officers.

“EC must be seen to be punishing erring EC officers who rig elections for contestants and the EC must also be punishing the EC officer in Nandom who openly declared his NPP affiliation during last weekend’s NPP primaries,” He added.

Dr. Boamah also stressed that the party anticipates the EC to implement important reforms, such as conducting elections in November, without waiting for the next election year.

He concluded by advocating for the electoral process reform to be completed by 2027, allowing political actors ample time in 2028 to focus on crucial matters during an election year.

“The process must end the latest by 2027 to allow political actors enough time in 2028 to concentrate on core concerns in an election year,” he added.

The youth must be encouraged to explore opportunities in cocoa industry – CRIG boss

Executive Director of the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG), Dr. Francis Padi, has urged cocoa industry stakeholders to promote careers in the cocoa sector among the younger generation.

Emphasizing the potential of agribusinesses that manufacture cocoa products, he believes this initiative will not only boost cocoa consumption in Ghana but also globally.

Dr. Padi made these remarks during the official inauguration of the Cocoa Club of Ghana at CRIG’s Akyem Tafo premises.

The newly formed Cocoa Club, comprising CRIG workers, aims to contribute to the development of the cocoa industry.

Dr. Padi stressed that with support from industry stakeholders, the club could engage with the youth, fostering interest in cocoa cultivation and agribusiness related to cocoa processing.

Ghana has the capacity to process cocoa beans into a variety of products, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, various types of soap, and chocolate.

Deputy Director and Head of the Social Science and Statistics Unit of CRIG, Michael Owusu-Manu, explained that the club operates as a fun-based educational outreach program.

It seeks to empower basic school pupils with knowledge about cocoa production, providing firsthand information about the cocoa industry, from beans to finished products.

Owusu-Manu, who also serves as the club’s patron, highlighted the success of last year’s program, where 260 pupils from CRIG M/A JHS delved into the historical background of cocoa.

They visited experimental cocoa farms to learn about the fermentation of fresh cocoa beans and even got to taste the flavor of chocolate in the laboratory.

The Abuakwa North Municipal Education Director, Abena Gyamerah, expressed her delight with the formation of the cocoa club.

She sees it as an opportunity for basic school pupils to gain comprehensive information about cocoa, spanning from 1815 to the present, aligning with the theme “Cocoa through the Wheel of Time and the Sustainable Development Goals linked with Cocoa.” Gyamerah encouraged other schools to introduce practical aspects of cocoa cultivation and processing to stimulate interest among the younger generation.

Elon Musk’s company successfully implants brain chip in human

The technology billionaire, Elon Musk, has announced a successful implantation of Neuralink’s wireless brain chip in a human, marking a significant milestone.

The initial findings show promising neuron spikes, and the patient is reportedly recovering well. Neuralink’s objective is to establish a connection between human brains and computers, aiming to address complex neurological conditions.

The company received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in May to conduct human trials, overcoming earlier challenges in obtaining regulatory clearance.

In a six-year study, a robotic system is employed to delicately insert 64 flexible threads, thinner than a human hair, into a region of the brain associated with “movement intention.”

These threads enable the experimental implant, powered by a wirelessly chargeable battery, to record and transmit brain signals to an app for decoding the user’s intended movements.

Elon Musk, sharing the news on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), revealed that Neuralink’s initial product, named Telepathy, aims to allow control of devices such as phones and computers through mere thought.

He emphasized its potential benefit for individuals who have lost limb functionality, envisioning enhanced communication for people like the late Stephen Hawking.

While Musk’s involvement raises Neuralink’s prominence, the field has other long-standing players.

Companies like Blackrock Neurotech, operating since 2004, and Precision Neuroscience, co-founded by a Neuralink co-founder, are also working on brain-computer interfaces.

The latter’s implant, resembling a thin piece of tape, offers a simpler procedure for implantation via a “cranial micro-slit.”

Several existing devices have demonstrated success in recent scientific studies, monitoring brain activity during speech attempts and decoding signals to aid communication.

The competition in the emerging field of brain-machine interfaces is intensifying, with different approaches and technologies vying for success.

Pentecost Ghana to use online service to reach lost souls

In June this year, t he Church of Pentecost (CoP) is poised to launch an e-church, expanding its presence into the virtual space.

Be wary of deceptive prophecies regarding 2024 elections – Rector of GTS tells Ghanaians

Ghanaians have been cautioned against succumbing to deceitful prophecies when choosing political leaders for the upcoming 2024 general election.

The Rector of Global Theological Seminary (GTS), Reverend Dr. Komi A. Hiagbe, emphasized that these self-made prophecies aim to mislead the public into believing that certain leaders have been chosen by God for the country.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Dr. Hiagbe expressed concern about individuals claiming to be men of God, delivering conflicting prophecies during elections.

He noted that such contradictory predictions can impact the judgment of congregants, potentially leading the country to lose competent leaders as some may be swayed by these prophecies.

“The truth is that God’s concern for us as a nation is not much about which football team wins, how the Black Stars are going to fare at AFCON or any other tournament.

Dr. Hiagbe, who holds a Master’s in Divinity and a doctoral degree in Theology, questioned the authenticity of prophecies that focus on political outcomes and emphasized that God’s concerns for the nation go beyond political leadership.

He criticized the prevalence of conflicting prophecies and the potential for deception, especially when there are prevailing issues of evil within churches and among congregations.

The scholar’s perspective aligns with recent concerns about prophecies predicting election outcomes, with the Police Administration engaging church leaders on responsible public communication.

Dr. Hiagbe underscored the importance of the Church playing a neutral and non-partisan role, focusing on prayer for peaceful elections and not becoming a platform for political promotion.

He emphasized that the Church should encourage informed choices by congregants and citizens for the betterment, peace, and stability of the country.

Dr. Hiagbe urged the electorate to prioritize competent leaders who can address challenges such as economic hardship and provide solutions in areas like education, health, sanitation, and employment.

Beyond prayer, Dr. Hiagbe emphasized that the Church should adopt a development-oriented approach, contributing solutions to national problems and serving as an agent for the realization of people’s potential.

Burkina, Mali and Niger’s decision to exit ECOWAS must be reconsidered – Analyst

An Analyst with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), Emmanuel K. Bensah, has criticized the recent decision by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger to withdraw from ECOWAS, describing it as an imprudent move.

Bensah believes that the timing for these countries to exit the organization is not ideal, citing potential logistical challenges that may arise as a result.

Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, currently governed by military regimes that ousted civilian leaders, officially announced their decision to break away from ECOWAS on January 28, 2024.

In a joint statement issued on that day, the countries expressed regret and disappointment, stating, “After 49 years, the valiant peoples of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger regretfully and with great disappointment observe that the (ECOWAS) organization has drifted from the ideals of its founding fathers and the spirit of Pan-Africanism.”

They asserted that ECOWAS had not provided support to these nations in their fight against terrorism and insecurity.

“Indeed, the organization has not provided assistance to our States in the context of our existential fight against terrorism and insecurity; worse, when these States decided to take their destiny into their own hands, it adopted an irrational and unacceptable posture by imposing illegal, illegitimate, inhumane, and irresponsible sanctions in violation of its texts; all things which have further weakened populations already bruised by years of violence imposed by instrumentalized and remote-controlled terrorist hordes.”

The statement further criticized the organization for imposing what they deemed as illegal, illegitimate, inhumane, and irresponsible sanctions when the countries decided to take control of their destinies.

However, in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on January 29, 2024, Bensah highlighted the drawbacks of the decision.

“Now these three countries would no longer enjoy the visa-free ration in West Africa. They will now need to apply for Visas to enter Ghana and other ECOWAS countries. Now, what about Malians who are in Ghana, they will no longer be ECOWAS citizens.”

“Malians who are in any other ECOWAS country, they will no longer be ECOWAS citizens, they will not be treated as such. They will now have to apply as if they are aliens to the ECOWAS community.”

He emphasized that citizens of these countries would now face limitations, needing to apply for visas to enter Ghana and other ECOWAS countries. This departure would also mean that Malians and citizens of the other countries would lose their ECOWAS citizenship privileges.

Bensah suggested that a more constructive approach would have been for the countries to engage in dialogue with ECOWAS, expressing their concerns about the treatment they received, rather than opting for withdrawal. He urged the countries to reconsider their decision.

NPP Poll: Some of our officers were attacked and injured during chaos at Yendi – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has revealed that three of its personnel sustained injuries in the violence that erupted during the Yendi parliamentary election for the New Patriotic Party on Saturday, January 27, 2024.

The contest, featuring the incumbent Yendi MP, Farouk Aliu Mahama, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama Zakariah, turned violent during the vote counting at the Yendi polling center.

Citi FM/Citi TV’s Northern Regional correspondent, Mohammed Aminu M. Alabira, was assaulted by Yendi MP Farouk Aliu Mahama during the counting process.

Ghana Police Service personnel had to intervene to rescue the journalist, EC officials, and other individuals, moving them to the Yendi Divisional Police Command.

Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, the Director of Electoral Services at the Electoral Commission (EC), informed Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM that three EC officials were injured during the incident.

“Some of our officers were attacked and injured, and they have been taken to the hospital for treatment. Three of them were attacked, and one was severely injured. We hope that the police will conduct an investigation,” said Dr. Serebour Quaicoe.

He explained, “The information I received from our regional director is that after they had finished casting the ballot, the votes for the various candidates were sorted out and stuck together. They started counting for the incumbent and reached 296 when there was a commotion, and the counting was disrupted. Some of the ballots were destroyed, so we could not declare any results.”

I never sent anyone to Akufo-Addo for Prof. Atta Mills’ autopsy report – Ekumfi chief

The Paramount Chief of Ekumfi Traditional Area, Odeefo Akyin VIII, has rejected claims that he authorized representatives to approach President Akufo-Addo seeking the autopsy report of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.

On January 13, 204, the family of the late former President, Professor John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills, appealed to President Akufo-Addo for the autopsy report, expressing concerns about the undisclosed cause of his death and emphasizing the need for closure and historical documentation.

Addressing the issue in a press conference on Monday, Odeefo Akyin VIII clarified, stating, “To set the records straight, the Paramount Chief Odeefo Akyin VIII has not appointed nor delegated anyone or any group of individuals to His Excellency (H.E.) the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo or any other institution to request an autopsy on the late Professor Mills on our behalf or on behalf of the family.”

He denounced attempts by certain groups and individuals to connect the Ekumfi Chiefs to the issue as malicious. Odeefo Akyin VIII firmly stated, “We want to emphasize that any attempt to link the Chiefs of Ekumfi to such actions is malicious, untrue, and mischievous, and must be treated with the contempt it deserves. Ekumfi Nananom, led by the Paramount Chief Odeefo Akyin VIII, also want to send a strong message to anyone or group of persons claiming to be from Ekumfi or elsewhere, and who allow themselves to be used for such disgraceful and malicious acts, that they may have to prepare to face the wrath of Nananom. The late Professor Atta Mills must be allowed to rest in peace.”

Additionally, the Paramount Chief characterized the ongoing media exchanges between the family of Prof Mills and other individuals as “appalling and disgraceful.”

He urged the involved parties to seek resolution through private discussions instead of engaging in public disputes. Odeefo Akyin VIII expressed dismay, stating, “The Nananom of Ekumfi believe that if the extended or any member of the family has issues with the report, they could engage in private discussions with the immediate family to settle their disagreements once and for all, instead of the recurring media banter. Nananom wish to state that the ongoing back-and-forth wrangling is not only appalling but also disgraceful and disgusting, projecting the family as a disintegrated one.”

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, the General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Kodua Frimpong, affirmed that the party’s national executive committee would convene to discuss and decide on the matter once they receive reports from the aforementioned stakeholders.

“As I speak to you, we are yet to receive a formal report from our representative who went to the region, the Electoral Commission, and the Ghana Police Service, and when we get all these reports, the national executive committee will meet to deliberate on them and take a decision on Yendi. For whatever transpired there, once we get the report, the party will take a decision on it.”

He emphasized the need for the full facts before commenting on any action, stating, “Several things happened at Yendi, so unless we have the full facts, it will be difficult to comment on any action.”

Despite the violence and disruption, some NPP executives proceeded to declare the incumbent Yendi MP, Farouk Aliu Mahama, as the parliamentary candidate-elect.

However, the Electoral Commission distanced itself from this declaration.
