Bel company accused of using same production line for alcoholic, non-alcoholic beverages

A group calling themselves Concerned Muslim Youths has accused Bel Beverages, the makers of Bel Aqua bottled water and various beverages, including the alcoholic drink Bel Ice, of utilizing the same production line for both alcoholic and non-alcoholic products.

Alhaji Shamuna Baako, addressing the group’s concerns at the National Mosque, expressed dissatisfaction with Bel Beverages’ alleged blending of alcohol with non-alcoholic products.

He hinted at potential action against the company.

During a press conference held at the National Mosque on January 26, 2024, the Muslim Youths claimed to possess credible information suggesting that Bel Beverages employs the same production line for both Bel Aqua and other beverages, particularly Bel Ice, which contains alcohol.

Citing Chapter 5 of the Quran, the group argued that simultaneous production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks using the same line contradicts Islamic beliefs, as Islam forbids alcohol consumption.

They urge Bel Beverages to segregate the production of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Additionally, the Muslim Youths assert that Bel Beverages involves individuals under 18 in promoting Bel Ice on Instagram and TikTok, a practice they argue violates the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and Article 28 of the 1992 Constitution.

The Concerned Muslim Youths call on regulatory bodies, including the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), to promptly investigate the claims and take appropriate action if the company is found at fault.

They stress the urgency of addressing this matter.

The group issued a warning, stating that without corrective measures, they will advise the entire Muslim community that Bel products are considered ‘haram’ (forbidden) and harmful, contrary to Islamic principles.

It’s noteworthy that Samuel Bempong, a concerned citizen, recently submitted a petition to the FDA and the Ministry of Gender, urging an investigation into Bel Beverages for allegedly using minors to promote Bel Ice on social media.

You cannot tell us who to vote for – Ekumfi chiefs to Akufo-Addo

The Ekumfi Traditional Council has responded to President Akufo-Addo’s implied deliberate neglect of Ekumfi residents because they voted against the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary candidate, Kingsley Ato Cudjoe, in the 2020 elections.

They emphasized that there is no constitutional provision empowering the President to dictate the voting preferences of Ekumfi or any constituency, the council asserted that individuals have the right to independently decide whom to vote for without external influence.

The Traditional Authority further demanded for scientific data from the Akufo-Addo regarding the former MP’s contributions to justify Akufo-Addo’s assertion.

Omanhene Odeefour Akyin VIII, speaking to the media, deems the President’s comments unfortunate, emphasizing that Ekumfi’s residents exercised democratic rights and should not face repercussions.

“The President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was seen in a viral video after some family of the late President Prof. Atta Mills visited him at the Jubilee House, categorically stating that he has denied the people of Ekumfi the much-needed development because they did not vote for Kingsley Ato Cudjoe, the New Patriotic Party candidate in the 2020 elections. There is no provision in the 1992 constitution which mandates the President to decide who the people of Ekumfi or for that matter any other constituency must vote for. We cannot understand why the President has abandoned all ongoing developmental projects in the constituency, particularly the construction of roads.”

“The people of Ekumfi are struggling because they did not vote for his preferred candidate, Kingsley Ato Cudjoe. But I believe that accurate data can justify the President’s claim, and so we need the data. But we want the President to know that the same Ato Cudjoe who is preferred by the President and whose exit from Parliament has become the reason the people have neglected Ekumfi has once again lost miserably in the NPP internal parliamentary primaries. So why must the chief and people of Ekumfi suffer just because of one person who has been neglected by his own party people,” Odeefour Akyin VIII, the Omanhene of Ekumfi Traditional Area, said.

Akufo-Addo’s statement, made during a meeting with the family of late President Prof. Atta Mills, claimed he denied development to Ekumfi for not voting for Ato Cudjoe.

Odeefour Akyin VIII questions the President’s authority to dictate voting choices, expressing bewilderment at the abandonment of ongoing developmental projects, especially road construction.

Highlighting Ekumfi’s struggles post-election, Odeefour Akyin VIII calls for accurate data to support the President’s claim.

He notes Ato Cudjoe’s loss in NPP internal parliamentary primaries, questioning why Ekumfi suffers due to one neglected by his own party.

The Ekumfi Omanhene urges Akufo-Addo to fulfill promises made as a father for all, emphasizing the anticipation of stalled developmental projects’ completion.

Odeefour Akyin VIII calls for calm among Ekumfi’s people, assuring efforts to address the issues while emphasizing respect for President Akufo-Addo despite the statement’s unfortunate impact.

Renowned social media influencer, GH Mouthpiece, has disclosed that she lost her job at Accra-based Kingdom FM after speaking out against President Akufo-Addo and his government regarding economic challenges in Ghana during the #FixTheCountry protest.

Recounting the incident during an interview on the Delay Show , she detailed how, on a crucial day, her boss unexpectedly summoned her just before going leave.

In a state of anger, he confronted her about her activities the previous night.

Initially bewildered, she denied any wrongdoing.

To her astonishment, he played a video featuring her quoting the President’s past campaign message, “We are sitting on money but still, we are hungry,” and added her voice, emphasizing that hunger had only worsened since he assumed power.

After viewing the video, he questioned her about her decision to create content centered around the president.

She explained that her intention was to spotlight the current state of the country.

However, when she requested to return to work, he denied the request.

“He pulled out a video of me addressing some concerns with regard to the ‘fix the country’ campaign. In the video, I poked Nana Addo for promising us a better life whereas we are currently experiencing worse situations. Before he came to power, he said Ghana was sitting on a gold mine but the citizens were hungry. Now you are in power and we are still living in the same Ghana, we haven’t relocated into the bush but things have worsened. That’s what I said in the video, but I recorded it in my house.

“I admitted to recording this video when my managers confronted me. My boss asked why I disrespectfully spoke about the president in that manner… He showed me a chat between him and the president at 1 am. In the conversation, the president was complaining about the video I did. After the confrontation, I asked if I could go back on air and my boss said no.

“Quickly, I walked to my office, picked up my bag and laptop and the show was left ajar. Days later, I was called from home to write an apology letter to the president. In fact, an already printed apology letter was handed to me to read and sign. So, I resigned. My soul, mind and spirit had left the job,” she stated in an interview with Delay.

Consequently, she had to clear her desk and leave. In the following days, Gh Mouthpiece was pressured to write an apology letter to the President, despite feeling that she had not offended him.

She eventually signed an apology letter drafted by her producer and manager. Although she was offered her job back, she chose to decline and resigned instead.

The demands put forth by the Senior Staff, Teachers, and Educational Workers Union, along with the Ghana Association of University Administrators at the University Of Ghana, include the payment of delayed tier 2 pensions with compound interest and improved conditions of service.

Expressing optimism, Ken Botchway, Chairman of the Legon branch of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), sees the meeting with the Minister for Labour Employment and Pensions on February 1 as a positive development.

This revelation, as per Adom-Otchere, raises concerns about the credibility of Anas’ journalistic work.

During one of his shows, Adom-Otchere accused Anas of prioritizing financial gain over ethical journalism practices, suggesting that the journalist’s commitment to the truth may be compromised.

Anas has earned worldwide recognition for his undercover investigations, unveiling corruption and wrongdoing in diverse sectors.

Adom-Otchere, however, claims that Anas is driven by excessive greed and questions the motivations behind some of his high-profile investigations.

In addition to targeting Anas, Adom-Otchere extended similar allegations to the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng.

He labeled both Mr Agyebeng and Anas as “wolves in sheep’s clothing” and deemed them “wicked people.”

“That day that Kissi Agyebeng was made special prosecutor, we should all have atoned for our sins and begged God for mercy on Ghana, praying that such wicked people no longer hold positions of influence. Wolves in sheep’s clothing, wicked people—they don’t inspire anything; they are just greedy. May the Lord forgive them,” he added.

Adom-Otchere suggested that the day Mr Agyebeng assumed the role of Special Prosecutor should have been a moment for collective introspection and repentance for the nation, expressing concerns about such allegedly unscrupulous individuals holding influential positions.

Adom-Otchere concluded by asserting that the partnership between Kissi Agyebeng and Anas involves fabricating lies to tarnish the images of individuals for financial gain.

In a recent episode of his show, Adom-Otchere passionately expressed his grievances against Anas, renowned for his undercover investigative work that has exposed corruption and wrongdoing across various sectors.

Adom-Otchere accused Anas of harboring excessive greed and questioned the journalist’s motivations behind some of his high-profile investigations.

His disapproval extended to Anas’s methods and approach in conducting undercover investigations, with Adom-Otchere alleging that the journalist prioritizes financial gains over ethical journalism practices.

Furthermore, Adom-Otchere leveled similar accusations at the Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, claiming that both Kissi Agyebeng and Anas are “wolves in sheep’s clothing” and “wicked people.”

He suggested that the day Mr Agyebeng was appointed as Special Prosecutor should have been a moment for collective introspection and repentance for the nation’s sins.

Subsequent to the documentary’s release, the president ordered Mr Nyantakyi’s arrest to facilitate an investigation into the actions captured on tape.

  • Stop blaming hackers for inefficiency – Bright Simons jabs GWCL

Vice president of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has taken a swipe at the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) for its apparent inefficiency and the recent trend of attributing challenges to hackers.

In a X post, Mr Simons, raised concerns about the utility company’s handling of its billing system and the introduction of “smart meters.”

The GWCL, responsible for providing water services to the public, has faced ongoing criticism for billing discrepancies and operational inefficiencies.

To enhance efficiency in meter reading, the GWCL announced its intentions to deploy drones capable of conducting readings within 15 minutes from a 500-meter range in 2022. As a result, the company successfully installed 80,000 smart meters.

However, Mr Simons has pointed out that despite producing a significant amount of water, the company has struggled to bill accurately for half of its water output.

“Ghana Water Co! You can’t bill for 1/2 the water you produce. So, you introduce “smart meters”. 7 years on, less than 10% of your customers have them. 90%+ of those who have reported that they are a mess. Rather than focus, you buy drones to read meters! Now you’re blaming hackers!,” his tweet read.

According to him, in an attempt to address this issue, the GWCL introduced smart meters seven years ago.

He indicated that less than 10% of the company’s customers have been equipped with these meters, and a staggering 90% have reported dissatisfaction, citing various operational issues.

He suggested rather than addressing the core problems with the smart meter initiative, Mr Simons noted, the GWCL appears to be diversifying its focus by investing in drones to read meters.

According to him, the primary concern should be fixing the existing problems rather than introducing new technologies without a clear resolution to ongoing issues.

He further urged the company to take responsibility for its shortcomings and prioritize addressing the fundamental issues affecting its service delivery.

The strike, declared by the Senior Staff Association of Public Universities in Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff (FUSSAG) on January 17, 2024, is a nationwide protest against the government’s alleged disregard for their welfare.

The association cites the government’s failure to fulfill obligations such as payment of their two-tier pension and overtime allowances as key reasons for the strike.

The withdrawal of services, including healthcare, administration, and security, has led to the closure of the university’s hospital.

During this period, the university’s communication team advises students to seek care for minor conditions at their respective hall infirmaries.

For severe conditions, students are directed to the school student’s clinic near the Sam Jonah Library, which will operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day excluding weekends.

Additionally, the ongoing medical exam for fresh students has been temporarily suspended until further notice.

A parliamentary aspirant from the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Blay Miezah, in the Jomoro Constituency is considering legal action against the Ghana National Gas Company due to its failure to address developmental challenges in the municipality.

Nana Miezah expressed frustration after attempts to engage Ghana Gas through letters regarding the improvement of the Samenye barrier to Half-Assini through New Town road yielded no results.

Climate change may reduce working hours – ILO

In the next six years, Africa may witness a reduction of more than two hours in working hours due to heat stress caused by climate change, posing significant challenges to the labor market and overall economies.

This global phenomenon is expected to impact workable hours in various regions, rendering some areas too hot for productive work.

During a recent presentation on climate change and just-transition at a media sensitization program in Accra, the National Project Coordinator of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Gideon Mankralo, highlighted the worsening global situation.

He predicted that by 2030, rising temperatures could lead to work restrictions, with authorities in some countries, such as Ghana, considering measures like prohibiting work between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Mr. Mankralo emphasized the severe repercussions on industries like agriculture and construction, stressing the urgency of implementing the National Green Jobs Strategy to address the imminent challenge.

“So, by 2030, temperatures are going to rise so high that we cannot go to work in the afternoons, and the Ministry of Labour, TUC, workers will come out and say for Ghana between 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. nobody should come out to work,” he said.

He urged the promotion of green jobs, emphasizing the connection between 1.2 billion jobs and ecosystem services, warning that climate change effects could lead to substantial job losses, such as 86 million jobs if fisheries collapsed.

The workshop, organized by the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations (MELR), aimed to enhance journalists’ understanding of the Green and Circular economy. It emphasized the crucial role of media in promoting and creating green jobs.

The National Green Jobs strategy, initiated in 2016, aligns with the country’s commitment to National Determined Contributions (NDCs) for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Gloria Bortele Noi, the Director of Policy Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation at MELR, stressed the importance of citizen awareness about climate change. She called for media involvement in educating the public on climate change issues and the necessity for a just transition. Ms. Noi emphasized that creating green job opportunities is a shared responsibility, requiring policy alignment, coordination, green skills development, and support for green enterprises.

Kumasi to get 33-unit military accommodation facility

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, has presided over a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a 33-unit housing complex intended for the military.

The initiative is a response to a Supreme Court ruling directing the transfer of portions of government land to the Golden Stool, affecting existing military accommodations.

In compliance with the Supreme Court directive to cede part of the government land in the Nyhiaeso, Danyame area to the Golden Stool, the Regional Minister explained, “so we are relocating our staff who are within the enclave. As a result of that, we have to relocate some military personnel, so we are coming to construct a 33-unit accommodation facility for the military”.

Under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the project is led by the Lands Commission in the Ashanti region.

Regional Lands Officer Peter Osei Owusu anticipates the completion of the housing complex by October 2024, as conveyed during the sod-cutting ceremony.

Brigadier General Charles Agyemang Prempeh, the General Officer Commanding the central command, expressed gratitude for the project, emphasizing its alignment with the Ghana Armed Forces expansion initiative.

“The Ghana Armed Forces has embarked on an expansion project where we need to expand to be able to take on the security challenges in the country. In so doing, the units in the central command, particularly those in 4 garrisons, are equally expanding. The corresponding effect is that we need to have accommodation to house these soldiers. Fortunately, it coincided with the ceding of portions of land to the Golden Stool, and that has necessitated the relocation of my officers from where the Golden Stool is taking over to this new site.”

“This is a special project because it takes into account the officers who are living in that area to have accommodation in the new area. By doing so, we will have more accommodation than before, and it is going to help us in our expansion drive to have accommodation for our officers.”

  • EC, political parties to deliberate on date for 2024 elections

EC, political parties to deliberate on date for 2024 elections

On Monday, January 29, the Electoral Commission (EC) is scheduled to convene with various political parties at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting to continue discussions on its proposal to change the date for the general elections.

The proposed amendment suggests shifting the date for both Presidential and Parliamentary elections from December 7 to November 7.

The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed opposition, citing concerns that the proposed timeline may not provide the EC with sufficient time to organize a seamless election.

In contrast, sources within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggest that the party’s leadership is still deliberating on the matter before arriving at a decision.

In a noteworthy development, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reversed its earlier decision to boycott IPAC meetings. The party communicated this reversal in a statement dated Sunday, January 28, 2024, signed by its General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.

IPAC meetings play a crucial role in facilitating a platform for political parties to review election-related activities and policies, express grievances officially, and contribute constructive inputs.

Additionally, IPAC serves as an advisory body to the Electoral Commission.

The NDC’s leadership had boycotted IPAC meetings in 2021, citing perceived bias and lack of transparency during the 2020 general elections. However, in their recent statement, the NDC stated that the decision to rescind the boycott was made through “enhanced consensus-building.”

Video: NPP youth leader storms church to attack chairman

During a Sunday church service at the Church of Pentecost in Asante Akyem Asankare, Ashanti region, chaos unfolded involving key members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Youth Organizer for the Asante Akyem South constituency, Simon Agyemang, physically assaulted the chairman, Noah Kyei, within the church auditorium.

This incident occurred as part of a thanksgiving service for MP Kwaku Asante-Boateng’s recent victory in the parliamentary primaries.

In a visibly angry confrontation, Mr. Agyemang aggressively confronted Mr. Kyei, grabbing him by the neck and physically mishandling him. Other worshippers rushed to Mr. Kyei’s aid.

Although the motive behind the attack remains unclear, there are allegations that the Youth Organizer was dissatisfied with the chairman’s handling of the primary held the previous Saturday.

Mr. Boateng emerged victorious in the election with 522 votes, representing 61.27% of the total votes cast.

His main contender, Bice Osei-Kuffuor, the Managing Director of Ghana Post, secured only 280 votes, representing 32.86% of the total votes cast.

Fire razes down wooden structures at Asokwa

A devastating fire has ravaged makeshift wooden structures at Asokwa Old Town in the Asokwa Municipality of the Ashanti Region, leaving numerous residents homeless.

According to Citi News, the fire is suspected to have originated from one of the structures and began spreading around 3:30 pm on Saturday, engulfing other wooden buildings in its path.

The Deputy Ashanti Regional Commander of the Ghana National Fire Service, Rashid Nisawu, reported that they received a distress call at approximately 4:08 pm.

Responding promptly, four fire engines were dispatched to quell the flames, though the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The fire’s intensity is attributed to the presence of highly combustible materials within the wooden structures. Unfortunately, residents who were away during the incident suffered complete losses, including monetary valuables.

While some onlookers managed to salvage a few belongings before the destruction, others arrived too late, watching helplessly as the fire consumed their properties.

One victim, Akolpuka Akolberi, a kenkey seller, recounted her harrowing experience, stating, “I overheard people alerting us about the fire, so I stopped what I was doing and rushed to my structure to get my belongings. The fire spread so fast, so I had to run out. My belongings, including cash, have been consumed by the fire,” she narrated.

South Sudan: Ghanaian peacekeeper allegedly killed during conflict between local rival groups

Clashes between local rival groups in the Abyei region on the South Sudan border has allegedly resulted in the tragic death of a Ghanaian United Nations (UN) peacekeeper, according to a statement by the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA).

The incidents occurred in three locations within the Abyei area on Saturday, causing casualties and leading to the evacuation of civilians to UNISFA bases for safety amid the violence.

During the fighting, one UNISFA base came under attack and although the attack was repelled “tragically a Ghanaian peacekeeper was killed during the incident,” the statement said.

The UN mission is currently in the process of verifying the extent of the impact, including the number of casualties, injuries, and displaced individuals.

Frequent clashes between various communities are common in South Sudan, stemming from the aftermath of a devastating war involving the country’s leader, Salva Kiir, and his former deputy, Riek Machar, in a conflict between rival tribes. The statement, however, did not specify which tribes were involved in Saturday’s clashes.

The Abyei region, known for its oil resources, grapples with recurring episodes of violence, primarily due to a dispute over the administrative boundary among rival factions of the Dinka ethnic group. The ownership of Abyei itself is contested between Sudan and South Sudan, with the latter declaring independence from Sudan in 2011.

Use electric chair or lethal injection, death by hanging is painful – Nana Yaa Jantuah

The former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Yaa Jantuah, has called for a reconsideration of the country’s death penalty, deeming death by hanging as inhumane.

Her remarks follow the recent sentencing of six individuals to death by hanging for conspiring and committing high treason on January 24, 2024.

In an interview on TV3, Nana Yaa suggested exploring alternative methods of the death penalty, such as an electric chair or lethal injection, emphasizing the need for more dignified approaches.

“It’s not humane, if they want to keep the death penalty at least they should die in some form of dignity. Hanging is not a very pleasant way to go to heaven or hell. Why can’t the national get an electric chair or lethal injection? I know most people on death row are not even killed but conditions in the prison are bad,” she said.

“I was disturbed in the night especially when I saw the woman among them. I wanted women to petition the President so that they should be exempted from the penalty. • Akosombo Dam Spillage: Charity alone is not enough, find a lasting solution – Kofi Bentil tells Govt

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Kofi Bentil, strongly condemned the government’s response to the Akosombo Dam spillage, labeling it as both inadequate and a hastily made decision.

Expressing his views during a panel discussion themed “Building Resilience: A Socio-Economic Response to Natural Disasters” at the Africa Leadership Initiative West Africa (ALIWA), Mr. Bentil voiced disappointment in the government’s poorly planned efforts to address the immediate concerns of affected residents.

While acknowledging the commendable efforts of Citi FM and Citi TV in providing relief and implementing long-term solutions in the heavily affected areas of the Lower Volta Region, Mr. Bentil underscored the importance of not solely relying on charitable initiatives.

He emphasized the necessity for a robust and coordinated national-level approach.

Expressing his astonishment at the lack of a serious government response, Mr. Bentil questioned the ad-hoc arrangement at the national level.

“I am still shocked that we have a disaster of that nature and there was no serious government response; what we saw was not serious. Look, Citi FM has done a yeoman’s job, but is that their responsibility? When you have a disaster of that magnitude, it is not charity that solves the problem.”

“At a national level, what I saw was an ad-hoc arrangement. Where is NADMO? Where is the Ministry of Interior? Where is the State in dealing with this in a way that is not ad-hoc or knee-jerk? Don’t we have systems in place that can take care of this? I am saying this because we are due for a major earthquake, and if we cannot deal with this, then God help us all.”

He queried the absence of organizations like NADMO, the Ministry of Interior, and the State in dealing with the situation in a more systematic manner, raising concerns about the preparedness for a potential major earthquake.

Highlighting the urgency of the matter, Mr. Bentil called on Parliament to conduct a thorough investigation into the spillage. He emphasized that the flooding was not a natural disaster but a consequence of deliberate actions, pointing out that someone initiated the release of water despite being aware of downstream residents.

We have reduced armed robbery in Ghana – Police

The decline in robbery incidents in the country is credited to the dedicated efforts of the current police administration, according to the Director of the Police Public Affairs Directorate, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Citi TV, ACP Ansah-Akrofi highlighted that the administration prioritized addressing violent crimes, particularly robberies, upon assuming leadership of the Ghana Police Service.

She noted the establishment of specialized anti-robbery teams strategically positioned in areas prone to robberies, resulting in improved outcomes and a decrease in violent crimes in those regions.

“A lot of work has gone into fighting robberies. When the current administration and board members took over the affairs of the Police Service, one of the areas that they knew required tackling was fighting crime, especially robberies, and so special teams were set up in robbery-prone areas to ensure that they put in place operations to control such crimes.”

“We have also done a lot of intelligence work so our intel teams across the country continue to work to get information on criminal gangs and networks, and we move on them as and when necessary. In most of our releases, when there is a robbery, our response and determination to go after the suspects and arrest them have been largely successful, so we are leaving no stone unturned.”

ACP Ansah-Akrofi emphasized the concerted efforts to combat crime, stating, “A lot of work has gone into fighting robberies.”

Furthermore, she mentioned the ongoing commitment of the Police Service to enhance intelligence gathering nationwide.

ACP Ansah-Akrofi affirmed the Service’s determination to combat criminal activities through intelligence teams that gather information on criminal gangs and networks, allowing swift and successful responses to incidents.

Proactive strategy needed to manage water levels in Akosombo Dam – Dr Ampomah-Benefo to VRA

Dr. Ampomah-Benefo from the Centre of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has recommended to the Volta River Authority (VRA) the adoption of a proactive strategy in managing water levels at the dam.

Dr. Ampomah-Benefo discouraged the practice of waiting until the dam reaches a critical point before initiating water release.

Speaking during a panel discussion on “Building Resilience: A Socio-Economic Response to Natural Disasters” at the Africa Leadership Initiative West Africa (ALIWA) on Thursday, January 25, Dr. Ampomah-Benefo stressed the importance of monitoring rain patterns and releasing excess water before the dam reaches its maximum capacity.

In his advice to the VRA, Dr. Ampomah-Benefo stated, “We know how much is coming to our bucket, whether it is coming slowly or not. So, wherever it is coming from, you know how much is coming into your bucket and how much you let out to make the water stay. It is raining whenever, but we can know when it will be full.”

According to Dr. Ampomah-Benefo, this proactive approach allows for better control over water levels, mitigates the risk of reaching critical points, and ensures a more effective response to changing weather patterns.

Meanwhile, Kofi Bentil, Vice President of IMANI Africa and a panel member, strongly criticized the government’s handling of the Akosombo Dam spillage, labeling it as both unserious and a knee-jerk reaction.

Mr. Bentil expressed disappointment in the government’s insufficient and poorly planned response to address the immediate concerns of affected residents.

Ghana plans to allow visa-free entry for all Africans worldwide – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has announced his government’s commitment to implementing a visa-free policy for all Africans traveling to Ghana in 2024.

During the opening of the 2024 Africa Prosperity Dialogue on January 25, the President revealed that the necessary processes for the policy’s execution have been initiated.

In his address to participants, he acknowledged the visa requirements for attending the event and highlighted a special arrangement made for the conference, reducing the visa acquisition fee by 50%.

“We reduced the visa acquisition fee by 50%, and we were thus able to receive your visa on arrival. The Government of Ghana is committed to ensuring visa-free access for all Africans travelling into our country, and the process has begun to implement the policy this year.”

President Akufo-Addo emphasized the Government of Ghana’s dedication to providing visa-free access to all Africans visiting the country, with the implementation process set to commence this year.

Encouraging a critical examination of such dialogues, the President stressed their importance in meeting the demands of the private sector.

“These dialogues have to examine critically the responsibilities and expectations of the private sector and demand the same of the public sector and expect that both can work as partners to achieve the Africa we want. We must strengthen our resolve to work hand in hand with our governments in free and fair democratic systems of governance that promote safe and sound, legal, and institutional frameworks. Let us work to get the buy-in of the small trader, builder, farmer, and seamstress and make them believe that having a single market can benefit them as well,” he entreated.

He called for collaboration among Africans to strengthen their governments within a free and fair democratic system.

Additionally, he urged concerted efforts to secure the support of small traders and farmers for the concept of a unified African market, emphasizing its potential benefits for them.

The two-day Africa Prosperity Dialogue, themed “Developing Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add, Value, and Trade,” is being held at the Peduase Lodge. Organized by the APN in collaboration with the Africa Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat and the Government of Ghana, the event serves as an annual platform for business executives, thought leaders, and political figures to collaborate on advancing the goal of building the world’s largest single market in Africa.

The Africa Prosperity Dialogues were officially adopted by the African Union on February 19, 2023, as a crucial instrument for mobilizing private sector support for the continent’s AfCFTA project.

This decision was made during the 36th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government.

Your cattle are causing destruction in Wenchi; you have 7 days to relocate them – Chiefs tell herdsmen

The Traditional Council of Wenchi in the Bono region has issued a seven-day ultimatum to herdsmen, directing them to relocate their cattle.

This directive, endorsed by the Paramount Chief of the Wenchi Traditional Area, involves collaboration with chiefs, the Municipal Assembly, Police Service, and other authorities.

The decision stems from recent grievances raised by crop farmers and residents regarding the destruction of farms by the herdsmen’s cattle.

In an interview with Citi News, Nana Anye Amoanpong Tabrako III, the Paramount Chief, expressed his concern over the matter.

The Paramount Chief stressed that coordinated efforts with the Municipal Assembly, Police Service, community leaders, and local farmers are underway to prevent the continued disruption caused by the cattle.

He emphasized the importance of finding effective solutions to protect the community from harm and preserve their agricultural activities.

“It is not something I am going to allow during my reign. They destroy the crops and farmlands. Wenchi is a farming area, and that is what the people mostly depend on. We boast of cashew, and it is this cashew that the cattle swallow. So, if the animals destroy our cashew, what are we going to boast of?”

“We are going to be in contact with the Municipal Assembly, Police Service, Nananom, and MuSec. We are in talks to see how best we can prevent them. The farmers are also included because most of them have their ways, so it does not affect anyone or soul. We need to have a way to prevent them from entering our community and harming anyone.”

Star Assurance goes after Tema Central MP over GH₵10.5m insurance debt

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tema Central, Yves Hanson-Nortey, who is affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is facing criticism due to the non-payment of a GH₵10.5 million insurance debt to Star Assurance Company Limited.

The debt arose from the actions and omissions of Mr. Hanson-Nortey and his company, APEX Petroleum ABD, which obtained an insurance bond from Star Assurance Company Limited in 2018.

Despite assurances and an out-of-court settlement that required payment of a negotiated sum of GH₵10.5 million out of the total GHC22.5 million, the NPP MP and his company have failed to fulfill their part of the agreement.

According to the Statement of Case filed by Star Assurance Company Limited at the Commercial Division of the High Court in Accra, the insurance company issued a customs bond in October 2018 to APEX Petroleum ABD, covering costs incurred on imported petroleum products for distribution and sale, totaling GH₵10,000,000.00.

However, false representations from the defendants (APEX Petroleum ABD and the MP) led to a debt owed to the Ghana Revenue Authority.

The plaintiff further stated that the defendants failed to rectify the default of the 1st Defendant (APEX Petroleum ABD) concerning the conditions precedent to the bond issuance.

As of June 2, 2021, the 1st Defendant was reportedly indebted to the Plaintiff in the sum of GHC22,500,000.00.

“Plaintiff says that as at the 2nd day of June, 2021 1st Defendant was indebted to the Plaintiff in the sum of Twenty – Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GHc22,500,000.00). Recovery of the sum of Twenty-Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis.

“Interest on the said amount at the prevailing Commercial bank rate payable monthly in arrears from the 21st day of February, 2021 to date of final payment,” the Plaintiff stated.

Despite the initiation of legal proceedings, the 2nd Defendants (MP and his company) approached the Plaintiff for an out-of-court settlement.

“Recovery of the sum of Twenty-Two Million Five Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH&22,500,000.00) being money to be paid by Plaintiff to Ghana Revenue Authority as a result of Ist Defendant’s failure to pay its taxes and levies owed to Ghana Revenue Authority and which amount the Defendants have failed and/or refused to pay in spite of several and repeated demands made therefore.

“Interest on the said amount at the prevailing Commercial bank rate payable monthly in arrears from the 21st day of February, 2021 to date of final payment,” the Plaintiff stated.

In response to failed attempts to recover the money, the Plaintiff initiated legal action against both defendants, seeking the recovery of the full amount, interest, damages, and costs, including legal fees.

Assurances and commitments were made, and an agreed settlement of GH₵10.5 million was adopted by the Court as a consent judgment on June 22, with Justice Akua Sarpomaa Amoah confirming the terms of settlement as the Consent Judgment of the Court.

However, the MP and his company have failed to honor their part of the agreement, leading to ongoing efforts by the insurance company to pursue the outstanding payment.

“The following Terms of Settlement filed on 3rd June, 2022 and duly executed by the Parties and their respective Counsel are hereby adopted as Consent Judgement of this

Manhyia Palace still demands Wontumi’s presence – Report

Reports have emerged contradicting earlier claims that the Manhyia Palace has dismissed media assertions indicating the withdrawal of summonses for the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, to appear before the Kumasi Traditional Council.

The media had suggested that the Asantehene ordered the council to cease discussions on alleged disrespectful actions by Chairman Wontumi towards the occupant of the golden stool.

Previously, Nana Kofi Owusu, the Chief Linguist of Otumfuo, had directed the NPP, led by Justin Frimpong Kodua, during a meeting on Monday, January 22, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace, to present Chairman Wontumi before the Asanteman Council within a week.

Despite potential health concerns, Wontumi was urged to respond to alleged derogatory comments about Asanteman.

Contrary to circulating reports claiming a directive from the Asantehene instructing the Kumasi Traditional Council to suspend Chairman Wontumi’s case, sources from the palace, as reported by JoyNews, have refuted such assertions.

According to these sources, no such directive has been issued by the Asantehene.

Our security at stake due to persistent killings by military – Nunoo Mensah

A former National Security advisor, Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah, has expressed concern that the ongoing civilian casualties inflicted by the military pose a growing security threat.

His remarks come in the wake of a military operation that the armed forces described as the neutralization of individuals engaged in a gun battle with them.

This operation resulted in the death of three residents of Bawku, where soldiers had been deployed to maintain peace amid a renewed chieftaincy conflict.

On January 19, 2024, reports surfaced that three residents were killed on the preceding night by soldiers, a claim denied by the military.

According to the military’s statement, the fatal encounter occurred during a night foot patrol around Hasania School in Sabongari, where four gunmen opened fire on the officers.

The military asserts that they returned fire, neutralizing three assailants, while the fourth managed to escape.

In response to these incidents, the Ministry of Interior has revised the curfew hours for the Bawku municipality, now in effect from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.

Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah, in an exclusive interview with TV3’s Beatrice Adu, attributed the killings to indiscipline within the military, which he linked to the recruitment of personnel from what he termed a “rotten society.”

Addressing the security implications, Brigadier General Nunoo Mensah warned that the recurrent civilian killings could lead to broader security challenges. He emphasized that the military’s actions reflected the societal issues from which recruits are drawn.

When asked if he considered the civilian deaths a security threat, he affirmed, stating that such incidents could provoke individuals, not necessarily from the military, to take matters into their own hands.

Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry’s statement urged stakeholders in Bawku to exercise restraint and seek peaceful resolutions to the challenges facing the region. Additionally, it emphasized a total ban on carrying arms or ammunition in the Bawku Municipality and its surroundings, with violators subject to arrest and prosecution.

NPP Primaries: Tension mounts in Asene Manso Akroso as police arrest queen mother, campaign manager

The impending parliamentary primaries of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on January 27, 2024, are marred by heightened tension in the Asene Manso Akroso Constituency of the Eastern Region.

The arrest of Nana Afia Henewaa, the Adontenhemaa of Akyem Akroso, and Solomon Obeng Asante, campaign manager of Alex Owusu Adjei, has heightened the atmosphere.

Alex Owusu Adjei, a contender against the incumbent MP, George Kwame Aboagye, is at the center of the controversy.

The arrests followed a press conference expressing dissatisfaction with the change of voting venue, an alteration allegedly orchestrated by the police commander and the MP, as claimed by the queen mother.

Mr. Adjei, attempting to secure bail for the queen mother, found himself arrested as well. Both were later hospitalized due to increased blood pressure while in custody, alleging mistreatment and handcuffing to hospital beds.

Although the charges remain unclear, sources indicate their release with instructions to report back to the police station.

Residents and delegates, unhappy about the venue change, suspect the arrests were meant to intimidate them and are considering supporting Adjei as an independent candidate if he loses the primaries.

NPP supporters in the constituency are also threatening to back Adjei as an independent candidate in the general elections if the party leadership does not reconsider the venue change.

They argue that the historical venue at Akroso Presby school was shifted to Akim Batabi, seemingly favoring the incumbent MP who resides nearby.

The supporters, clad in red and black, expressed dissatisfaction on the streets, warning of potential consequences if the decision is not reversed.

Talks to bring Asante regalia home began over 50 years ago – Agyemang-Duah

Prominent Ghanaian historian and advisor to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Dr. Ivor Agyemang-Duah, has provided insights into successful negotiations with the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum, paving the way for the return of Asante regalia to the Manhyia Palace in Ghana.

In a groundbreaking cultural collaboration, plans have been unveiled for the display of gold and silver regalia associated with the Asante royal court at the Palace Museum in Kumasi.

This display is part of a significant long-term loan commitment by the V&A and the British Museum.

The historic announcement signifies a momentous occasion, as regal items unseen in Ghana for over 150 years are set to return to their roots. Dr. Ivor Agyemang-Duah revealed that negotiations took place during the Asantehene’s visit to London in 2023, and the discussions unfolded over the last nine months.

Speaking on Citi Breakfast Show, Dr. Agyemang-Duah emphasized the concerns raised by past Asante rulers regarding the regalia held by the British Museum.

He mentioned the critical significance of the current year, marking 150 years since the war, 100 years since the return of Agyemang Prempeh from exile, and 25 years of the reign of the current Asantehene Osei Tutu II.

Dr. Agyemang-Duah explained that the artefacts would be sorted to identify those that were looted, specifying that the ones from the Victoria & Albert Museum were stolen.

When questioned about loaning stolen regalia to the Manhyia Palace, he underscored the strict laws governing the UK museums, preventing the permanent return of objects that were looted or stolen.

99% of residents will attest Akufo-Addo has not abandoned Ashanti Region – NPP to Mahama

The Ashanti Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has responded strongly to former President John Dramani Mahama’s claim that the region, despite historically contributing significant electoral votes, has been neglected by the current government.

During his campaign for the proposed 24-hour economy policy in Kumasi, Mahama criticized the government, pointing to unfinished projects like the Kumasi Central Market.

In rebuttal, Adom Appiah, the NPP’s regional secretary, vehemently contested Mahama’s assertions and pointed to completed infrastructure projects as proof of the government’s dedication to the Ashanti Region.

Mr Appiah specifically highlighted the successful revitalization of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s 44-year-old mother and child block.

He emphasized that the structure, which was considered structurally unsound, was demolished and reconstructed under President Addo Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s administration.

Asserting his position, Appiah stated, “99% of Ashanti residents will agree with me when I say that President Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s administration has not neglected the region,” Mr Appiah declared.

He added “If you have been to Kumasi, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, for instance, there was a 44-year-old mother and child block for 44 good years, this block stood unattended to. President Akufo-Addo pulled it down and rebuilt it, recognizing its importance to the 27% of Ghanaians who depend on it.”
