  • Akufo-Addo is doing his best as a president – Atta Akyea

Akufo-Addo is doing his best as a president – Atta Akyea

Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has lauded President Akufo-Addo for his performance amid numerous challenges encountered during his tenure.

Akyea highlighted the president’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine conflict, unique challenges not faced by his predecessors.

He specifically praised President Akufo-Addo for implementing the free Senior High School policy, emphasizing its significant future benefits.

The MP also acknowledged the initiation of constructing a hospital in every district as a noteworthy achievement.

Speaking on the government’s performance during an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Citi TV, Akyea defended

Akufo-Addo against claims of underperformance, attributing the challenges to the global impact of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

He commended the president’s governance achievements, emphasizing the importance of free education and the ambitious healthcare infrastructure development.

“I don’t think he [Akufo-Addo] has underperformed. What I believe is that he has had a lot of trouble. People underrate the power of COVID-19. President Nkrumah never faced that. The Russia-Ukraine war, of which the evidence is conclusive, the cold fact that economies contracted because of this situation.”

“I think that President Akufo-Addo has been a bad storyteller too. There is no president in this realm called Ghana who said people should go to secondary school for free. You think it is cheap. Even if it is not perfect, given the foundation for this nation to take off in terms of serious brain power in the next 20 years. I have not heard of any president who said every district should have a hospital. These are not low-cost governance achievements,” he stated.

  • The ‘most difficult vocation’ in politics is being an MP – Atta Akyea

The Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has characterized being an MP as one of the most challenging roles in politics.

The former Minister for Works and Housing expressed concern about the substantial and unconventional responsibilities that accompany the position.

During an interview on Citi TV’s Face to Face with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Atta Akyea lamented the constant individual demands placed on MPs by their constituents, often at the expense of collective development and progress.

Describing the situation, he stated, “As if you [MPs] were called to solve mass poverty,” emphasizing the persistent demands from constituents across the country.

Reflecting on his own experience, Atta Akyea suggested that after 16 years, it might be a suitable time to retire from such a demanding role.

He highlighted the unique challenges faced by Members of Parliament, describing it as the most arduous vocation in politics.

He noted the continuous individual demands on MPs by their constituencies, citing examples such as being asked to purchase a coffin for a family in connection with a deceased individual they may not even know.

“As if you [MPs] were called to solve mass poverty,” Mr. Atta Akyea bemoned the unceasing demands of constituents across the country.

“I believe 16 years is a good enough time to hang up your gloves. I am not a young man. There is no more serious undertaking in politics than to become a Member of Parliament. I believe becoming a Member of Parliament is the most difficult vocation anybody can pursue; as if you were called to solve mass poverty, incessant individual demands on the MP by the constituency.”

“For example, how do you feel about buying a coffin for a family in relation to a deceased individual you don’t even know?”

  • Over 137,000 fresh SHS students still at home – GES

Over 137,000 fresh SHS students still at home – GES

The Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan area, Sally Nelly Coleman, has disclosed that more than 137,000 students placed through the 2023 Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) into Senior High Schools and Technical and Vocational Education and Training Schools across the country have not yet enrolled for admissions.

The revelation, deemed “very worrying” by Coleman, follows the placement of approximately 590,000 students in various schools across the country. To date, only 453,000 have reported for admissions, prompting a plea to parents to facilitate their children’s admission.

Despite the release of the computer placement list and a reopening date of January 3, 2024, a substantial number of students appear unprepared for admission.

In response to the situation, Daniel Vroom-Laryea, Western Regional Chairman of the National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations, highlighted various contributing factors during an interview on Connect FM’s Omanbapa morning show.

Mr Vroom-Laryea emphasized that the school reopening timing posed challenges for both parents and students.

Cocoa farmers in rural areas, for instance, faced financial constraints due to poor yields, hindering their ability to finance their children’s education.

Mr Vroom-Laryea indicated that financial issues were preventing some students from reporting for admission, revealing hidden complexities within the Free Senior High School Policy.

“About 590,000 were placed in the various schools nationwide. So far, 453,000 have reported for admissions. So about 137,000 are still home, they have not reported to their various schools for admissions. We are pleading with parents to go for the admissions” ” she lamented.

“The re-opening date for the schools was not favorable for both parents and the students. Cocoa farmers in the rural areas are complaining that they had little yield in the year and so they don’t have the money to take their children to school. They must fill their chop boxes, some parents are even renting for their children to be in school, they must buy a lot of things for them to be in school. So, all those who have not reported, it is due to financial issues. The free SHS is becoming more expensive than we thought. There are more hidden issues to the free senior high school than we have all been made to believe,” he indicated.

He further expressed concerns about the increasing costs associated with the policy and asserted that the government was restricting the Parents Association from aiding the situation.

Mr Vroom-Laryea cited instances of over 21 pregnancies reported in a senior high school, attributing the issue to a lack of school infrastructure.

He lamented the government’s decision to limit the involvement of Parent-Teacher Associations, citing it as a significant problem in addressing challenges within the education system.

“About 590,000 were placed in the various schools nationwide. So far, 453,000 have reported for admissions. So about 137,000 are still home, they have not reported to their various schools for admissions. We are pleading with parents to go for the admissions” ” she told Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, the host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show.

  • Fair Wages and Salaries Commission expands payroll checks to health sector

Fair Wages and Salaries Commission expands payroll checks to health sector

The payroll monitoring initiative is set to expand its reach to public health institutions nationwide this year.

Aimed at curbing irregularities in the public sector wage bill and rectifying workload and salary discrepancies, the CEO of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), Benjamin Arthur, revealed plans to focus on the health sector starting in February.

The ongoing exercise, initiated in April last year, initially concentrated on the Local Government Service in specific regions such as Western, Greater Accra, Central, Volta, and Oti.

Providing insights into last year’s progress, Arthur stated that preliminary investigations indicated a decrease in wage bills across the 17 institutions covered.

The average reduction in the wage bill during the exercise from April to August 2023 was 1.2%, equivalent to around GH¢36,108,000.

The Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) experienced a one and six per cent reduction month over month for July and August, respectively, resulting in country savings of about GH¢178,360,000 and GH¢18,448,000.

Arthur commended the CAGD’s support, attributing the exercise’s success to it, and emphasized the positive impact of linking the Ghana Card to the payroll, aiding in cleaning up records.

Despite the decreasing wage bill, Arthur noted an increase in the number of employees, highlighting the importance of continuing the payroll monitoring exercise to enhance cost savings.

Additionally, the initiative has contributed to improved productivity by encouraging attendance through regular checks and introducing a program linking pay to productivity.

The CEO outlined plans to expand the program, aiming to sensitize staff in a minimum of 40 institutions this year.

He emphasized the need for staff to comprehend the performance appraisal system, enabling them to set targets for institutions and individuals, ultimately enhancing the public service’s productivity.

Mr Arthur envisioned a future where payslips were directly linked to employees’ input, ensuring alignment with their rewards.

  • Stepping down as finance minister will make a lot of good – Atta Akyea advises Ofori-Atta

Stepping down as finance minister will make a lot of good – Atta Akyea advises Ofori-Atta

The Member of Parliament(MP) for Akim Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has suggested that Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta considers stepping down, citing both personal well-being and the government’s best interests.

Amidst growing calls for Ofori-Atta’s resignation, fueled by the country’s ongoing economic challenges, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been particularly vocal, holding the Finance Minister accountable for the current fiscal difficulties.

In a recent interview on Face to Face, Mr. Atta-Akyea emphasized the need for self-reflection on Ofori-Atta’s part, urging him to evaluate whether stepping down would be beneficial for himself and the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“For me, what is very frightening is the fact that you have a whole army of people saying look you’ve had enough…I think that that could be a way for him to relax. Look at all the burdens on one man. So it is his individual decision to make as to whether he should  go or he should continue.”

“He should look at himself and look at the troubles that everybody believes, I mean when he is not there then the nation will have peace…He should save himself and save the government and have his peace because he needs it,” Mr Atta Akyea said.

Expressing concern over the mounting pressures on Ofori-Atta, Atta-Akyea suggested, “Look at all the burdens on one man. So it is his individual decision to make as to whether he should go or he should continue.”

Atta-Akyea went on to suggest that Ofori-Atta’s resignation might contribute to a more peaceful political environment for both the government and the nation, saying, “He should save himself and save the government and have his peace because he needs it.”

Additionally, Atta-Akyea criticized those blaming Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the country’s economic challenges.

He acknowledged the challenging economic situation but deemed it unfair for anyone to attribute economic issues in the Akufo-Addo government solely to Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing the vice president’s challenging role that limited him from making certain sensitive decisions for the country.

  • Election year projects are scams, be vigilant – Ada MP tells Ghanaians

Election year projects are scams, be vigilant – Ada MP tells Ghanaians

The Second Deputy Whip of the Minority Caucus in Parliament, Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe, has cautioned traditional leaders against participating in sod-cutting ceremonies organized by the Akufo-Addo government within their regions this year.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ada constituency expressed skepticism about projects initiated during an election year, deeming them as potential scams due to the government’s historical inability to bring such initiatives to completion.

Following an engagement with traditional leaders in Dodowa, Accra, she emphasized the need for Ghanaians to exercise caution when presented with seemingly beneficial infrastructural developments during election seasons.

“Nobody should believe any government cutting sod in an election, and no chief should worry his head by putting on his beautiful kente cloth following any president in an election year who is about to exit power to sit and cut sod for projects; they are just scamming them.”

“We should not focus on Jean Mensa; let us focus on the branch, which is where you get the win and so protect that ballot in your branch and shine and open your eyes when it is time to do the calculation of the ballots and make sure they do the right calculation. If you take your eyes off your polling station, that is where they will scam you and steal the elections, and when it gets to Jean Mensa, whatever they brought to her is what she puts together, so protect your ballot at the polling station.”

In her statements to journalists, she urged citizens not to put their trust in any government embarking on sod-cutting activities in an election year.

She particularly discouraged chiefs from participating in such ceremonies, characterizing them as deceptive tactics employed by presidents who are about to leave office.

Madam Cudjoe went on to address supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), urging them to be vigilant and protective of their votes at polling stations to prevent any attempts at rigging.

She emphasized the importance of focusing on the local level, advising supporters to safeguard their ballots within their respective branches.

According to her, the key to securing a victory lies in ensuring the correct calculation of ballots at the branch level, as taking one’s eyes off the polling station could potentially lead to electoral fraud.

She also underscored the significance of scrutinizing the electoral process at the grassroots level before it reaches the attention of officials like Jean Mensa, who, in her view, simply consolidates the results provided to her.

Sabronum residents burn truck allegedly carrying excavator to forest for illegal mining

On Monday, January 15, 2024, enraged residents of Sabronum, Ashanti Region took matters into their own hands, blocking and setting a truck ablaze amid suspicions that it was transporting an excavator for illegal mining within a forest reserve.

Allegedly supported by unidentified individuals with local authority backing, the excavator was brought to the forest, causing alarm among residents who feared potential illegal mining activities.

Resisting the truck’s departure, the residents obstructed its path and set it on fire as a form of protest, expressing their determination to oppose any unlawful mining activities in the area.

During the confrontation in Sabronum, an individual named Bismarck Ankamaah reportedly faced an attack, sustaining severe machete wounds. He was accused by alleged thugs of inciting the arson against the truck transporting the excavator to the forest reserve.

Ankamaah, who suffered injuries to his leg, arm, and back, recounted the incident, stating that he received an announcement from the Assembly Member at around 2 am on Monday about the arrival of an excavator for mining purposes. As the truck arrived, residents gathered and blocked the road, leading to the subsequent incident.

“I was threatened by one of them. I later realized the vehicle was set ablaze, then my wife asked me to get my kids from her mother’s room. While at my wife’s shop, the thugs known as A Thousand Robbers pounced on me. As I struggled with them, they used machetes and sticks to beat me up and inflicted wounds on me,” Ankamaah explained.

The residents expressed concerns about potential pollution of a crucial water source for domestic and irrigation needs if illegal mining persists. They issued a warning of decisive action if the excavator remains within the community.

Despite government efforts, illegal mining continues to pose challenges in the Ano South East District, creating tension in the area, which is currently deemed tense.

“I was threatened by one of them. I later realized the vehicle was set ablaze, then my wife asked me to get my kids from her mother’s room. While at my wife’s shop, the thugs known as A Thousand Robbers pounced on me. As I struggled with them, they used machetes and sticks to beat me up and inflicted wounds on me.”

  • Individuals blaming Bawumia for Ghana’s challenges are cruel – Atta Akyea

Individuals blaming Bawumia for Ghana’s challenges are cruel – Atta Akyea

The Member of Parliament representing the Akim Abuakwa South constituency, Samuel Atta Akyea, has voiced criticism against those attributing Ghana’s economic challenges to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Acknowledging the economic downturn, Atta Akyea defended Dr. Bawumia, describing the situation as ‘unkind’ and ‘cruel’ to hold the vice president responsible for the issues in the Akufo-Addo government.

Atta Akyea emphasized that Dr. Bawumia, being in a serious adversary role, faced constraints in making sensitive decisions for the country.

Atta Akyea underscored the importance of electing the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer in the December polls to bring about positive changes in the country’s fortunes.

He lauded Dr. Bawumia as a distinguished gentleman with ‘shock absorbers’ ready to serve the nation.

“This is the first time Ghana is going to have a president who is an economist, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. If the problem of Ghana now and people are talking about its seriousness, I agree to a reasonable extent that the economy is not in its best form. When you have a toothache, do you give it to a carpenter or a dentist? Ghana will be in a safer pair of hands when we bring Dr. Bawumia.”

Expressing concern about the economic challenges, Atta Akyea drew a parallel, stating, “When you have a toothache, do you give it to a carpenter or a dentist?” He advocated for placing trust in Dr. Bawumia, an economist set to become Ghana’s first president with such credentials.

Addressing the criticism against the vice president, Atta Akyea denounced it as “cruel and vile propaganda” to lay all of Akufo-Addo’s economic burdens on Dr. Bawumia.

During an interview on Face to Face, on Citi TV, Atta Akyea expressed doubt in the opposition National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) ability to manage the government’s educational policy, free Senior High Schools (SHS), citing concerns that they didn’t initiate the program.

In the upcoming presidential election, Vice President Bawumia is vying for the presidency, challenging former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, who seeks re-election.

The leader of The New Force Movement,  Cheddar, widely known as Nana Kwame Bediako has revealed that he has been a dedicated member of Perez Chapel, fondly known as Perez Dome, for 21 years.

He disclosed this when the founder of the church,  Bishop Agyinasare gave him the opportunity to address congregants.

“Hallelujah! So, it’s been 21 years since I’ve been worshiping in this church, and I think maybe this is the first time that most of you are seeing me, but I always sit in that corner.

According to him, although he has been a faithful attendee for the entire span of the church’s existence, despite regularly attending services, this occasion marked one of the few times he had taken the stage to address the congregation.

“Twelve years ago, I used to sit at the east side when we were in the other Auditorium. Then I moved to this side. The point is, it doesn’t matter where you sit; the message should be heard,” he added.

He also expressed gratitude to God and the spiritual leaders of the church who had been instrumental in their spiritual journey.

Cheddar specifically acknowledged Bishop Agyinasare and his wife, Vivian Sena Agyinasare  for being a guide and advisors.

“Now, before I share a little about myself and maybe the New Force Movement, I’d like to ask the entire church to help me to thank, first of all, God and the man of God that has been my spiritual father and advisor and Mama,” he stated.

The profound moment, witnessed by congregants, marked a spiritual intercession seeking divine guidance and blessings for Cheddar’s journey ahead.

Cheddar in recent times has revealed his bid to contest the presidential elections on December 7, 2024.

Faced with challenges in registering his political party, he revealed plans to run as an independent candidate during an interview on The Point of View on Citi TV.

Criticizing the government’s economic management, Mr Bediako pledged to rescue the country from further hardships.

He emphasized his commitment to building a middle-income nation, generating job opportunities for the youth and fostering their active involvement in governance.

“We wanted to register a political party, but they didn’t give us a license. We are still moving with our movement. I’m running in the December polls as an independent presidential candidate. Because they didn’t give us any license or even provisional license. You will see me on the ballot on December 7. The governance of the country is poor, the government is the problem. We need to be responsible for the leaders we choose.”

“In the last 4 decades, between the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party, there hasn’t been any young person who has dared to stand up and say he’s coming. I’m the unifier between the youth and the government. I’m for the people who need change; I’m for the neutral people, and I don’t belong to any political party. We aim to build a middle-income nation by creating jobs for the youth,” he promised.

Interdicted TOR union executives will be reinstated by lawful means – GTPCWU

The General Transport Petroleum Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU) is determined to secure the reinstatement of its interdicted executives promptly.

The TOR Board of Directors interdicted two union executives over the controversial TOR-Torentco deal for allegedly disclosing classified information during a press conference.

The union has been advocating for the removal of the TOR Board of Directors following concerns about the Torentco deal.

The board cites a breach of the non-disclosure agreement in the TOR/Torentco Lease and O&M agreements, based on Article 43(4) (vii) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between TOR and GTPCWU.

Bernard Owusu, Chairman of GTPCWU, challenged the board’s action, describing it as a ‘show of power’ and asserting that the executives did not commit any offense to justify their interdiction.

“The Chairperson for the Junior Staff at TOR and the Chairman for the Senior Staff have been interdicted as employees of TOR for speaking to the media and talking about the Torentco deal. In the history of TOR, this is the first time that we have heard of this so-called manual of not speaking to the media or going to the media. This is sheer power; the board of directors wants to show they are the people in charge and are untouchable. The board claims they have shared confidential information, and by so doing, they have interdicted them. They have not done anything wrong; these are innocent workers who are doing their jobs as leaders of TOR. It means if you are doing something fraudulent, nobody should talk about it.”

He emphasized that the union is taking steps to reverse the decision, and the workers will employ lawful means to bring the interdicted members back.

Mr Owusu cautioned the TOR Board against venting their frustrations on workers, labeling them as incompetent in handling the responsibilities assigned by President Akufo-Addo’s government. The union vows to resist any attempts to target workers.

He added, “The mother union is writing to management to revert the decision unconditionally; we are consulting our structures, and tomorrow we are having a management committee meeting. The workers of the refinery will not allow this to go to sleep without using lawful means to bring members back.”

“Let me caution the board of TOR once again, we are saying that they are incompetent; they cannot do the job President Akufo-Addo’s government has given them. They have failed woefully. They rather want to vent their frustration on members; we will not allow that to survive,” he stated.

School of Law Kumasi campus to remain open amid Makola expansion – GSL Director

The Ghana School of Law (GSL) has acquired land at Makola to initiate the expansion of its campus, in line with the vision of former Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah, aiming to bring the law school closer to court complexes.

Barima Yaw Kodie Oppong, the Director of GSL, confirmed this development and assured that the expansion in Accra would not result in the closure of the Kumasi campus.

He acknowledged the support of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who facilitated the establishment of the Kumasi campus as the first regional campus.

“The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has been gracious in getting us a location to formerly establish and make the Kumasi campus as our first regional campus. So, the expansion at Makola is not going to lead to the shutting down of the Kumasi campus. ”

“We try to obey laws just to avoid punishment. But you cannot be successful at the bar if all you think about is that you’re doing what pleases others as right because if you don’t, you would be punished.

Speaking at the induction ceremony for professional law course students at the Kumasi campus, KNUST, Director Barima Yaw Oppong emphasized the importance of ethics in the legal profession.

He urged students to make ethical principles an integral part of their professional lives.

Former Chief Justice Kwasi Anin-Yeboah echoed the call for adherence to the code of ethics, emphasizing its significance for successful legal practice.

Justice of the Court of Appeal, Samuel Obeng Diawuo, highlighted the seriousness of legal ethics, cautioning against lawyers making public statements on pending cases in which they are involved. He stressed that upholding ethical principles is crucial for bolstering public confidence in the rule of law and the legal profession.

The induction ceremony welcomed 140 law students into the Ghana School of Law – Kumasi Campus, as they embark on their academic journey toward becoming legal practitioners.

“Ethics must be our way of life. It must be imbibed in us even at the formative level. Otherwise, you may become a lawyer, but don’t forget that if you refuse to comply with the rules of ethics, there can be serious consequences for you,” stressed.

“A lawyer who is participating or has participated in the investigation or litigation of a matter that is still pending before a court, shall not make an out-of-court statement or grant an interview to the media on the merits of the case. But now, lawyers are heard commenting on merits of cases that are pending and which they are participants.

Adherence to and observing legality is one of the pillars on which the rule of law is anchored. When ethical principles are upheld by both lawyers and judges, it bolsters public confidence, belief, and faith in the rule of law and, by extension, legal practice”

Free SHS minus support from parents is meaningless – National Council of PTAs

The Western Regional Chairman of the National Council of Parent Teacher Associations, Daniel Vroom-Laryea, has voiced concern over the government’s exclusion from senior high school management.

Stressing the crucial role of parental support for the success of the free Senior High School policy, he pointed out that parents are currently being hindered from assisting schools.

Mr Vroom-Laryea highlighted issues such as over 21 pregnancies in a senior high school due to a lack of walls and the prevention of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA) from contributing to schools, which he deemed a significant problem.

“Parents are now being prevented from helping the schools, but we must know that free SHS is meaningless without the support of parents. We even recorded over 21 pregnancies in one of the senior high schools last year, because the school had no wall, and the students were being sneaked out. We are not being made to help, the government has stopped PTA from doing everything in the schools and that is a problem”, he added.

His comments were prompted by revelations from Sally Nelly Coleman, the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Director of the Ghana Education Service, indicating that over 137,000 fresh students placed through the 2023 Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) have not enrolled for admissions in various Senior High Schools.

The Ghana Education Service released the computer placement list for fresh students last year, with a reopening date of January 3, 2024. Coleman expressed concern, stating that out of about 590,000 placements nationwide, only 453,000 students have reported for admissions.

Mr Vroom-Laryea attributed this situation to an unfavorable reopening date, citing complaints from cocoa farmers in rural areas who had little yield and struggled financially to send their children to school. He emphasized that the hidden issues behind the free Senior High School policy make it more expensive than initially thought.

Supporters of Hayford Siaw confronted those caught defacing the posters, leading to a tense situation.

A video has circulated, allegedly showing a man associated with the incumbent MP physically assaulting a member of Siaw’s team who questioned him about the poster defacement. Bystanders had to intervene to prevent further escalation of tensions between the two camps.

Condemning these acts as cowardly, Mr. Siaw’s supporters are calling for a thorough police investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice. Despite attempts, contacting the incumbent Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri has proven unsuccessful.

Cecilia Dapaah’s hearing rescheduled to January 25

The Accra High Court has deferred the hearing of the case involving former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, to Thursday, January 25, 2024.

The case pertains to the former Minister’s alleged failure to disclose her income and property to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Furthermore, the OSP’s application to confirm freezing and seizure orders related to bank accounts and assets at Cecilia Dapaah’s residence has also been rescheduled to January 25.

Lawyers for Madam Dapaah filed an injunction application against the OSP on October 10, 2023, citing potential irreparable damage if the OSP is not restrained.

“This Court is enjoined to balance the economic right of the affected persons against the State’s power to fight corruption. It is the Applicants’ considered view that they would suffer irreparable harm if the Respondent is not restrained pending the final determination of the substantive matter.”

The Human Rights Court in Accra is hearing this application filed by Cecilia Abena Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffuor.

The case, which seeks to restrain the OSP from continuing to freeze Madam Dapaah’s accounts and seizing cash recovered from their residence, has been adjourned to February 1, 2024.

    Background:

Two house helps who worked for Cecilia Abena Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour, are facing charges for allegedly stealing monies and items worth millions of cedis from the couple’s residence at Abelemkpe in Accra.

The main accused individuals, Patience Botwe and Sarah Agyei, have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime and five counts of stealing. The alleged thefts occurred between July and October 2022.

The accused individuals were arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court on Thursday, July 20, 2023. Ms. Botwe and her alleged accomplices have been remanded into lawful custody, while Sarah Agyei has been granted bail.

The complainants reported the theft case to the police in June 2023 after discovering the missing cash and personal effects.

Investigations revealed that Patience, with the help of her alleged accomplice Sarah, had hidden the stolen money and used it to purchase properties and expensive items. The Special Prosecutor announced that his office was investigating the matter, starting with the arrest of Madam Cecilia Dapaah.

“This Court is enjoined to balance the economic right of the affected persons against the State’s power to fight corruption. It is the Applicants’ considered view that they would suffer irreparable harm if the Respondent is not restrained pending the final determination of the substantive matter.”

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital’s urology center nearing completion – Health Minister

The Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), currently in its final stages of construction, is expected to be operational by the end of 2024, according to the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu.

With construction progress reported at 90%, the focus has shifted to fittings, electricals, and the pending installation of equipment. The facility, boasting a 110-bed capacity, will address urology cases, renal, kidney, and renal transplant procedures upon completion.

Speaking on the advantages, Minister Agyeman-Manu highlighted its role in supporting Ghana’s aim to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030.

The center is poised to relieve the pressure on other teaching hospitals and regional facilities, reducing the need for referrals to KBTH in urology and nephrology cases.

The Health Minister emphasized that the center would be a crucial asset for health delivery, reducing health expenditure for patients who might otherwise seek treatment abroad.

Notably, the facility will enable kidney transplants, eliminating the need for patients to travel overseas for such procedures.

In addition to clinical services, the center will serve as a hub for knowledge dissemination, providing opportunities for doctors, medical students, and practitioners to engage in research studies.

The idea for the center emerged in response to a tragic incident in 2005, where three Ghanaian urologists lost their lives in a road accident after an outreach program in Sunyani.

Following their demise, the Ministry of Health collaborated with KBTH to establish the Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence, which began construction in 2020 after overcoming challenges associated with governmental transitions.

Ghana is steadily solidifying its position through the government’s strategic integration of technology to achieve its goals and objectives, as highlighted by the Minister of Communications and Digitalization, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful.

In an interview with Peace FM, she emphasized that the government’s technological advancements might not be immediately apparent or widely discussed, but they bear significant importance, despite not receiving widespread recognition.

The minister emphasized the undeniable importance of technology in our ever-connected global landscape.

“The government has successfully realized its vision through the strategic incorporation of technology. I often mention that there is a subtle revolution taking place, which unfortunately goes unnoticed due to the absence of grand announcements.

“Technology has seamlessly woven itself into the fabric of human existence, becoming indispensable. Individuals now find it challenging to distance themselves from their mobile phones, a testament to their significance,” she added.

She highlighted that the government acknowledges the transformative capabilities of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

According to her, the government has established ambitious objectives, aspiring to position Ghana as an inclusive and progressive digital hub in Africa.

The aim is to ensure that every citizen is part of this digital transformation, leaving no one behind.

She added that the government is committed to improving infrastructure, connectivity, and network access in rural areas for the benefit of individuals in remote villages as such has embarked on a project.

The ongoing rural telephony project, she said is backed by allocated funds.

“The government remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing infrastructure, connectivity, and network accessibility in rural areas.

“Our ongoing rural telephony project is specifically designed to bring benefits to individuals in rural and remote villages. Adequate funds have been allocated for this initiative to ensure its successful implementation,” she added.

Additionally she stated that by the end of the year, approximately 2016 self-sites will be completed.

She revealed that presently, 1,500 sites have already been accomplished, with around 1,000 more in progress.

“By the year’s end, we anticipate completing around 2016 self-sites. Currently, 1500 sites have already been accomplished, and an additional 1000 are in progress. This initiative is geared towards extending network connectivity to areas currently without it,” the minister added.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ablekuma West constituency, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has asserted that none of the aspiring candidates vying for the parliamentary seat in her constituency can rival her track record in terms of development.

In an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo the Minister of Communications and Digitalization, expressed confidence in her ability to outshine any contender when it comes to serving the constituents and driving development initiatives.

“When you look at those contesting for the Ablekuma West constituency, both in NPP and NDC, I believe that the kind of work I would be able to do, they can’t do a quarter of it because I started doing politics from way back,” she said.

The minister emphasized that her commitment to the constituency transcends party lines.

“I don’t only do NPP work in the constituency, and when you look at parliament, those that really contribute, I am part of them. When it comes to the females, I am one of the leading female parliamentarians.

“I have the belief that I can do it better than any other aspirant on both sides of the political divide, so they should allow me to continue my tenure and continue with my good works,” she affirmed.

  • National systems, structures must be redesigned to maximize AI use – IMANI Ghana

National systems, structures must be redesigned to maximize AI use – IMANI Ghana

Vice President of IMANI-Ghana, Selorm Branttie, has urged the government to undertake a comprehensive redesign of its systems and structures to optimize the utilization of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Drawing attention to an IMF index report assessing countries’ preparedness for AI, Mr Branttie highlighted Ghana’s placement in the lower third quadrant.

This positioning indicates a significant lack of readiness for the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.

He criticized the government’s persistent inclusion of human elements in automated processes, attributing it to prioritizing procurement benefits over efficiency.

Speaking on the Joy Super Morning Show, Mr Branttie pointed out that in certain service industries, unnecessary emphasis on human involvement has been maintained, contributing to inefficiencies for the benefit of specific parties.

He emphasized the importance of aligning these decisions with efficiency goals rather than procurement advantages.

“For example, in the service industry in areas where you’ll just need to run simple services we have overemphasised the human elements just because we like those inefficiencies to exist in order that we gain or some certain parties gain, and if these things are not done in the name of efficiency rather than in the name of procurement benefits,” he said.

“Now when it comes to AI we are at a point where there’s a turning point, we’re at a very critical tipping point where if we decide to really begin to use some of those systems and have a deliberate approach to it, it could dramatically change our environment.

Mr Branttie stressed the pivotal role of the government in leading the charge towards the integration of AI into existing structures to drive enhanced efficiency.

He highlighted a critical turning point, emphasizing that a deliberate approach to the adoption of AI systems could dramatically transform the national environment.

“The IMF report that Winston and you guys talked about earlier this morning actually shows of [inaudible] Ghana in the lower income category where our preparedness for Ai is much on the lower side. In an index of 125 countries, we are in the lower quadrant or the lower third or so, so we’re not at the point where our systems are being designed to maximize the use of Ai as it should,” he said.

“The issues here, or the issues for us in Ghana and Africa is that one, we’re not building enough data sets to feed into AI models to generate the things that are relevant to our environment.

Referring to the IMF report discussed earlier, Branttie highlighted Ghana’s placement in the lower income category in terms of preparedness for AI. Among 125 countries assessed, Ghana falls into the lower third quadrant, indicating a significant gap in incorporating AI as a strategic asset.

“So even now if you look at a lot of these AI systems, they’re more attuned to what will be culturally or informationally represent the West’s outlook on things or an American or European outlook on things.

“And you’d find very little nuance on African views or how we think or how we process our thoughts, our language, our culture, etc. and beyond that we have to look at it in many ways,” he said.

One of the challenges identified by Branttie is the lack of locally developed data sets to feed into AI models. Currently, most AI technology is designed for a Western audience, resulting in a limited representation of African perspectives, cultures, and languages.

To address this gap, he emphasized the urgent need for Ghana and Africa to build robust local data sets, ensuring that AI models reflect and understand the nuanced views and thought processes unique to the continent.

Teacher licensure exam results have not been altered – NTC

The National Teaching Council (NTC) has refuted claims of any alterations to the Teacher Licensure Examination results.

In an official statement, the NTC asserted that the examination results remain unchanged, and any insinuations of adjustments are deemed “false, deceptive, and should be regarded as fraudulent.”

To uphold transparency and accuracy, the NTC advised candidates to verify information exclusively through its official communication channels, including the official website and authorized social media accounts.

The Council is actively investigating the source of the misleading announcement and has emphasized the intention to take appropriate legal action against those found responsible.

The 2023 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) 2&3 saw a substantial number of teachers, totaling 9,556, failing the examination, representing a failure rate exceeding 47 percent.

The NTC disclosed this information in a press statement on Wednesday, December 20.

Out of the 20,181 teachers who participated, only 10,625 managed to pass the examination.

The Teacher Licensure Examination has been a subject of recent attention, especially with former President John Mahama’s promise to cancel it if re-elected in the 2024 general elections.

Mahama expressed concerns about subjecting Colleges of Education students to an additional test after completing their courses and exams.

While Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) advocate for the abolition of licensure exams, the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) opposes the proposal, arguing for the policy’s beneficial nature and urging for its retention.

Expressing concern about the absence of such opportunities for the youth over the past four decades, Mr Bediako criticized the prevailing practice where politicians exploited them by offering monetary incentives for votes.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Citi TV, Bediako emphasized the New Force’s dedication to championing the cause of the youth.

Mr Bediako pointed out the lack of a young individual with the courage to stand up and become a unifying force between the youth and the government between NDC and NPP over the last four decades.

As he envisions himself as the unifier, Mr Bediako pledged to be a president who provides young people with the opportunity to contribute to the decision-making process in selecting the country’s leaders.

He emphasized the New Force’s initiative to eliminate the practice of enticing youth with money for votes, stating, “So we want to eradicate and get rid of people going to the same youth and giving them money instead, and after that, there is no development, there is no job creation.”

15% VAT on electricity for energy sector debt settlement – Deputy Energy Minister

The imposition of a 15 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity consumption has been justified by the government as a crucial component of its COVID-19 recovery initiative aimed at generating additional revenue.

In a recent interview with Citi FM on Monday, January 15, Deputy Energy Minister Agyapa Mercer acknowledged the challenging nature of the decision but underscored its necessity in addressing debts owed to independent power producers.

Mercer highlighted that the outstanding debt to independent power producers alone amounted to approximately GH¢1.7 billion as of July 2023.

Despite this rationale, there is a growing chorus from the Minority and energy experts urging a reconsideration of the Value Added Tax imposed on specific categories of residential electricity consumers.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, in a letter to the Public Utility Regulatory Commission, clarified that the value-added levy would apply to electricity consumption exceeding lifeline units.

The Ministry explained that this move is integral to the government’s broader COVID-19 recovery program.

Ofori-Atta shared this information on PM EXPRESS BUSINESS EDITION with host George Wiafe, scheduled to air on Thursday, January 18, 2024.

The Finance Minister explained that as negotiations with donors progress, some will begin disbursing necessary funds for the halted projects.

A Memorandum of Understanding is expected to be signed with bilateral creditors in the coming days after reaching a deal on debt restructuring.

“Some of these donors have demonstrated their commitment to support the economy once issues around these debt restructuring are resolved” the Finance Minister added.

Ofori-Atta highlighted the commitment of some donors to support Ghana’s economy once debt restructuring matters are resolved.

The Finance Minister addressed concerns from certain donors, such as China, regarding the cutoff date for debt restructuring, noting that an agreement was reached with the Paris Club and China, setting December 2022 as the cutoff date.

Regarding the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, Ofori-Atta shared that Ghana has fulfilled requirements for the first review, anticipating a disbursement of about $600 million to the Bank of Ghana next week.

He revealed that the second tranche of the IMF cash would be directed toward projects outlined in the budget, indicating a shift from previous programs where all funds were focused on balancing payments.

“I know that they are piloting the system now, and by the grace of God if all goes well, we will have implemented a new system, starting this year, whereby nobody will be able to steal electricity in Ghana again. “It is a major thing that the ECG is likely to implement this year, using artificial intelligence and remote sensing. They are piloting it right now, and the results look quite good. Once we solve that problem, the issue of losses from people doing ‘kuluulu’ connections of electricity will be a thing of the past,”Dr Bawumia said.

The ‘ECG Power’ app, designed in-house, aims to facilitate payments and services for ECG’s customer base, expected to increase as smart meters replace old ones.

Users can download the app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, while non-smartphone users can access the service by dialing *226#. Vice President Bawumia commended ECG for employing technology to address critical functions and enhance revenue mobilization.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to using digital technology for a comprehensive transformation of Ghana’s economy.

The New Force is in for Ghanaian youth – Cheddar

The leader of the New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, has pledged to empower Ghanaian youth by involving them in the country’s decision-making processes when he assumes power in the 2024 elections.

Speaking in an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Citi TV, Bediako expressed concern that the youth have been denied such opportunities for the past four decades.

He criticized the prevailing practice where politicians only use the youth during elections, offering monetary incentives in exchange for votes.

Mr Bediako emphasized the New Force’s commitment to representing the youth, stating, “I think that the New Force is standing for the youth in this country. We believe that in the past four decades, the youth should have the right to be a part of the decision – how and who is going to lead us and how they are supposed to lead us… In the past four decades, between NDC and NPP, there hasn’t been any young person who has stood up with the courage to say that I am coming in, and I am going to become the unifier.”

“That is what I am. I am the unifier between the youth and the government. I am going to be a president who will give the opportunity to young people, first of all, to be a part of the decision of how this country is choosing leaders.”

Highlighting the absence of a young unifying figure in the past four decades between NDC and NPP, Bediako asserted, “I am the unifier between the youth and the government.”

He outlined his vision to be a president who provides opportunities for young people to actively participate in choosing the country’s leaders.

Mr Bediako aims to address the issue of politicians enticing the youth with money for votes, stating, “So we want to eradicate and get rid of people going to the same youth and give them money instead, and after that, there is no development, there is no job creation”.

Through this initiative, he envisions breaking the cycle of reliance on financial incentives during elections and fostering a more engaged and empowered youth in the political process.

I was a millionaire at 21, I made £1million after selling scraps in London – Cheddar

Nana Kwame Bediako, widely recognized as Cheddar has shared the story of how he achieved his first million pounds at the age of 21.

The leader of the New Force Movement, attributed this financial milestone to a combination of ventures in the telecommunications sector and a strategic involvement in the scrap business in the United Kingdom.

During an insightful discussion on the Point of View show on Citi TV, Cheddar revealed that he utilized $20,000 from his initial million-pounds earnings to establish a club in Ghana.

This entrepreneurial move proved fruitful, resulting in a profit of $75,000 after selling the club in 2002.

Recounting his early success, Cheddar explained, “The first money I made in England altogether was a million pounds and I was 21. I was working for myself, my company was GT, Global Telecommunications and Utilities I was selling scrap. I had my own office and I two employees.

“I started investments at a very young age and what happens when you make investments is that the money goes away and it feels like you are broke again so it makes you hungry.”

Cheddar emphasized the impact of starting investments at a young age, acknowledging the challenges of financial fluctuations that accompany such endeavors.

Looking forward, Cheddar, as the leader of the New Force, expressed a commitment to providing opportunities for the youth to actively participate in the country’s decision-making processes and the selection of leaders in the upcoming 2024 elections.

He criticized the lack of such opportunities for the youth over the past four decades, asserting that they were often used by politicians who offered monetary incentives in exchange for votes.

He stated, “I think that the New Force is standing for the youth in this country. We believe that in the past four decades, the youth should have the right to be a part of the decision – how and who is going to lead us and how they are supposed to lead us.

Road crashes declined by 4.1% in 2023 – NRSA

The latest data from the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) indicates a positive trend in road safety, with a decline in road crashes, injuries, and deaths (CIDs) in the year 2023 compared to the previous year.

According to the statistics by the NRSA, there were 14,135 reported road crashes involving 23,998 vehicles, resulting in 2,276 fatalities. Additionally, 15,409 individuals sustained various degrees of injuries, and 2,559 pedestrians were involved in accidents.

In comparison to 2022, the current figures show a decline of 4.1% in deaths, 1.8% in injuries, and 5.5% in road crashes. In 2022, there were 14,960 reported crashes, leading to 2,373 fatalities and 15,690 injuries.

The Director-General of the NRSA, David Osafo Adonteng, attributed the reduction in CIDs to a decrease in figures for major regions such as Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern. He emphasized the need to sustain effective measures in these regions to contribute to the overall reduction nationally.

Gender-wise, 21% of the total deaths were females (470), while males accounted for 79% (1,806). Age-wise, 14% of the deceased were below 18 years, and 86% were above 18.

A breakdown of fatalities by region revealed that Greater Accra, Ashanti, and Eastern regions had the highest numbers, with 485, 438, and 414 deaths, respectively.

The collaboration between various stakeholders, including the DVLA, Police MTTD, transport unions, and advocates, was emphasized as crucial in further reducing CIDs.

  • Two penalized for disclosing vital information on TOR-Torentco deal

Two penalized for disclosing vital information on TOR-Torentco deal

Two executives of the General Transport Petroleum Chemical Workers Union (GTPCWU) have faced immediate interdiction by the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) Board of Directors in connection with the contentious deal involving TOR and Torentco.

Anthony Joojo Koomson, Chairman of the Petroleum Union Senior Staff Association, confirmed the interdiction during an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, on Monday.

The interdiction stems from their disclosure of crucial information about the TOR-Torentco deal at a press conference.

The TOR Board alleges that the executives violated the non-disclosure agreement, which prohibited them from revealing details of the draft TOR/Torentco Lease and O&M agreements.

The board cited Article 43(4)(vii) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between TOR and GTPCWU.

“We alerted management about the shortfalls in the deal and they told us they can’t respond to the issues because the board is solely in charge. We wrote to the board and till date, they haven’t responded to us so we just had to do the needful by making the issue public,” he stated.

“This is the biggest mistake by the Board because it will not end her. The mandate of the board is not to micro-manage management. It is management who is to take disciplinary action but this clearly shows the incompetence of the board and the fact that they do not understand their job,” he lashed out.

In response, Koomson argued that the board acted in bad faith, asserting that his actions were in line with the Whistleblower Act. He stated that attempts to address the deal’s shortcomings with management went unanswered, compelling them to make the matter public.

Mr Koomson warned that the interdiction would not silence him and criticized the board for overstepping its role. He accused the board of incompetence and a lack of understanding of its responsibilities.

In light of the interdiction and the deal, GTPCWU has issued a threat of industrial action.

Cheddar announces independent presidential bid for 2024 elections

Ghanaian entrepreneur and New Force Movement founder, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar or Freedom Jacob Caesar, has announced his bid to contest the presidential elections on December 7, 2024.

Faced with challenges in registering his political party, he revealed plans to run as an independent candidate during an interview on The Point of View on Citi TV.

Criticizing the government’s economic management, Bediako pledged to rescue the country from further hardships.

Reflecting on the unifying role he envisions between the youth and government, Bediako expressed frustration at the lack of young candidates in the past four decades.

His independent candidacy aims to represent those seeking change, devoid of political affiliations.

Promising policies centered on affordable housing, Bediako outlined plans to invest in integrated developments with basic infrastructure, including sewerage, internet, and planning.

Additionally, he pledged to provide loans to graduates for purchasing apartments, emphasizing a focus on charity.

“In our plan for Wonder World, we have a solid development that we want to introduce to universities; it’s called graduates. We will give them loans to buy apartments, which is a charity focus. Ghana is developing affordable homes and they say it’s affordable homes but are charging people $60,000 to $80,000. And these developments are not integrated. We plan to invest in affordable housing, with an integration, and I have to do it right. Affordable housing needs basic infrastructure will be put in place, sewerage, internet, planning, wiring,” Cheddar promised.

Asserting his widespread presence, Bediako stated that he has officers stationed in all 16 regions of the country.

New Force became more powerful after our Convention event was cancelled – Cheddar

The Founder of the New Force Movement and Ghanaian Entrepreneur, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar or Freedom Jacob Caesar, has expressed that the cancellation of The Convention event, initially scheduled for January 7, 2024, has inadvertently propelled his movement.

The event, which was set to take place at Black Star Square on Ghana’s Constitution Day, was called off just hours before its commencement due to a last-minute government directive, according to the organizers, the New Africa Foundation.

During an interview on The Point of View on Citi TV, Cheddar acknowledged the unexpected turn of events but noted that the New Force Movement has gained significant influence in Ghana.

Responding to the host’s observation that the cancellation brought them considerable publicity, Cheddar affirmed, “I think you are right… The successful event has been based on the cancellation. It went to all parts of Africa, it woke people up.”

Cheddar dismissed claims that the Convention event was intended to unveil his New Force, emphasizing that the goal was to impact people.

He explained, “This event was going to impact based on what they will say. It wasn’t the plan to unveil a New Force. It was because the entity, or whoever decided to cancel the event, needed an excuse.”

He further highlighted that the press conference following the cancellation provided them with a significant opportunity to clarify their intentions to the public.

“We genuinely wanted to bring these people to open the mindset of the youth of Africa. I knew that I would still come in as the man in the mask but wanted people to know when they found out later about the contributions of the New Africa Foundation we bring into the system. This event was going to impact based on what they will say. It wasn’t the plan to unveil a New Force. It was because the entity, or whoever decided to cancel the event, needed an excuse. But even if it was so, would it have been wrong for me to unveil my movement? No, it’s not a crime,” Nana Kwame Bediako asked.

“I don’t think it’s just the cancellation that has helped me to achieve my aim. But the fact that they all agreed for us to do a press conference to explain ourselves actually sent the right message to the people.”

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem (KEEA) and sibling of the late former President John Evans Atta-Mills, Samuel Atta-Mills, has expressed frustration regarding the recent request for his late brother’s autopsy report.

Samuel Atta-Mills contended that those demanding the autopsy reports are not family members and have no familial connections with them.

He disavowed any involvement in the request for the autopsy, stating, “Those who went to see the President for the Late President’s autopsy are not family members. They are impostors. Koku Anyidoho is not my relative. They are cheap people looking for something to eat. They should leave us alone,” in an interview with Adom FM.

This development follows a request made by Nana Enyimfua III, representing Atta Mills’ family, to President Akufo-Addo last week.

During a courtesy call in Accra, she, accompanied by the Founder of the Atta-Mills Institute, Koku Anyidoho, expressed concern about the unknown cause of Atta Mills’ death and stressed the importance of obtaining the autopsy report for closure and historical records.

Nana Enyimfua III highlighted, “Our biggest problem as a family is that ever since I was enstooled as queen mother, I have not seen any autopsy report in the family. That is the biggest problem I have with the family because if someone asks me what killed him, I won’t know if the doctor said he broke his arm or his neck or drank something.”

This sparked controversy, with Cadman Mills, another brother of the Late President, clarifying that “The (legitimate) family can obtain a copy from 37 [Military Hospital].” He revealed on X that an autopsy was performed at the 37 Military Hospital and will be made available to the legitimate family.
