Akosombo Dam spillage: Camps for flood victim under construction in Battor, Mepe – DCE

Construction work has commenced on three camps in Battor and Mepe within the North Tongu District, located in the Volta Region.

These camps are intended to provide shelter for individuals who were displaced by the flooding caused by the overflow of the Akosombo and Kpong dams.

The Construction Ambassadors organization is responsible for executing this project.

The District Chief Executive of North Tongu, Divine Osborne Fenu, has indicated that the construction sites have already been cleared, and construction of the camp structures is underway.

While the exact number of beneficiaries to be accommodated in these camps remains unspecified, the urgency of this construction is underscored by the significant number of flood victims who have lost their homes.

These individuals are eagerly anticipating the completion of the camps to secure temporary, decent living conditions.

Furthermore, in an earlier announcement made by George G. Kutortse, the Chief Executive Officer of the construction company, the project’s purpose includes relieving the pressure on schools that have been utilized as temporary shelters for displaced persons.

Mr. Kutortse highlighted the dignity of those affected, who are currently residing in classrooms without adequate facilities.

Upon completion, the camps will offer essential amenities, including washrooms, to ensure the comfort and well-being of the occupants.

The construction company is well-equipped with the appropriate technology to expedite the project, with future plans for the camps after the floodwaters recede.

Emphasizing the importance of maintaining the academic calendar in affected areas, Mr. Kutortse stressed the need for the Ghana Education Service to ensure minimal disruption to education.

Additionally, the NDC Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, highlighted the relevance of these camps, not only as shelters but also as safeguards against the spread of diseases among the displaced individuals.

He urged the displaced people to refrain from contact with contaminated water and to only consume clean water provided to them, while also appealing for further support for these affected communities.

  • $20M debts owed WAPCo must be settled immediately to avert possible ‘dumsor’ – Minority warns govt

$20M debts owed WAPCo must be settled immediately to avert possible ‘dumsor’ – Minority warns govt

The Minority in Parliament has urged the government to settle the $20 million debt owed to the West African Pipeline Company (WAPCo) to prevent a severe power crisis in the country.

GRIDCo, in a statement on October 26, disclosed that a shortage of gas supply had resulted in a 550MW power supply deficit during peak hours, leading to power outages in certain regions.

In an interview with the media, the MP for Bongo, Edward Bawa, attributed the ongoing power outages to the government’s outstanding debt of $20 million to WAPCo and suggested that the government should establish an arrangement with WAPCo to address the issue.

He emphasized the need for the government to establish a working agreement with WAPCo to ensure that gas transmission from Obuasi to Tema continues.

“Government must find a way or make an arrangement with as to how that can be paid. If WAPCO begins to have some comfort that government has kept in touch to do the payment, then, I believe that it will work.

“Government must be working to see how they can give WAPCo some level of comfort to continue transmitting gas from Obuasi to Tema or else we are going to be in trouble. If the gas does not come, what it simply means is that the plants cannot run because they use fuel. And if they cannot run, you’d have that ‘dumsor’,’” he said.

Failure to do so, he said, would result in significant challenges, as the power plants rely on gas to function.

Mr Bawa expressed concerns that without the necessary gas supply, the nation might experience “dumsor,” or erratic power supply.

Edward Bawa, a member of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, provided insights into why WAPCo had to curtail gas supply due to the unpaid debt.

He revealed that WAPCo had not received payment since January 2023, resulting in the accumulation of unpaid bills.

The complexity of the situation arises from the fact that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) lacks the means to enter into agreements with power or gas utilities, and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) serves as a guarantor for ECG.

Consequently, ECG is responsible for paying WAPCo, but the cash flow mechanism, which used to allocate funds collected from power sales to the utilities, has been disrupted for almost 13 months.

“Now the question you would ask is whose liability is it? It is true that if you look at ECG, they do not have a healthy access or guarantee to be able to always go into arrangements with power or gas utilities so GNPC stood in as a guarantee for ECG.

“So ECG has to pay WAPCo but unfortunately because for almost 13 months now the cash waterfall mechanism where all the monies that ECG collects after selling power is put for it to be distributed among the utility mechanism is no longer working, ECG is unable to pay the liability,” he explained.

19-year-old law student’s death under investigation by GHS

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has initiated an investigation regarding the death of a 19-year-old second-year law student at the University of Ghana, Nana Obeng, which occurred at the Ewim Polyclinic in Cape Coast.

Speaking to the media, Nana Obeng’s mother, Nelly Mills, explained that she brought her son, who was asthmatic, to the hospital with the intention of administering a nebulizer treatment to prevent an imminent asthma attack.

“He has been asthmatic for the past ten years,” said the mother. “On the day he died, I served him his food and was waiting to finish eating so I administer his medicines to him. He sat by the table and told me that he was starting to feel worse.

“He said the asthma attack was gradually becoming severe. I asked him to use his pump and he told me to rather take him to the hospital for a nebulizer. So, I refused. He then went to take his bath and things got worse. I then sought help and we carried him to a hospital,”she indicated.

However, she alleged that the medical staff, rather than providing the nebulizer treatment, administered an injection, ultimately resulting in her son’s tragic death shortly thereafter.

“The first hospital told us they had closed so we took him to another one, Ewim Polyclinic. I told them my son needed oxygen and that he was in a critical condition but one of the nurses asked me to go and get a drug outside the hospital which costs just GHC7.00. I came back only to meet my boy vomiting.

“Within a twinkle of an eye, he stood and started acting strange. He looked aggressive and feisty. They then carried him and put him on the bed and I kept asking what they did to my son. Then they started resuscitating him a few times and finally confirmed that he was dead,” she stated in a viral video,” she stated.

The Central health directorate has announced that Nelly will need to await answers until a comprehensive investigation and autopsy, spanning the next two weeks, are completed.

  • Project to combat extremism in Northern Ghana launched

Project to combat extremism in Northern Ghana launched

Over a decade after terrorists besieged the region, Ghana has still not been targeted.

It is imperative to recognize, however, that violent extremism today poses a threat to more than just Ghana.

The West Africa Centre for Counter-Extremism (WACCE) Executive Director, Mutaru Mumuni Muqthar, has stated that it is currently closer to the nation than it has ever been.

West Africa has lost 53% of its population to terrorism, according to WACCE.

23 Ghanaians have been talked out of traveling to join extremist groups, while it is known that 13 Ghanaians have already joined such groups.

“Terrorists have a huge exploitative capacity; they take advantage of existing vulnerabilities to recruit and/or attack,” he said.

Northern Ghana is now more at risk as the threat moves from the Sahel and Burkina Faso to the coastal states.

WACCE is starting a project in Northern Ghana called “Building Resilience Against Violent Extremism through Social Cohesion” to deal with this.

The concept was unveiled by WACCE on Friday at a press briefing.

NAM1’s trial postponed to November 17

The High Court has postponed the trial of Nana Appiah Mensah, also known as NAM1, to November 17 in order to give the state more time to complete the submission of witness statements.

Director of Public Prosecutions, Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, representing the prosecution, requested a two-week extension from the court to gather witness statements due to challenges in obtaining signatures from some of the witnesses.

The defendant facing charges of defrauding over 16,000 people of GH¢1.68 billion, Nana Appiah Mensah, appeared in court without his lawyer, citing a morning emergency. Following deliberation, the Judge rescheduled the case to November 17.

Meanwhile, several Menzgold customers present at the High Court expressed disappointment with the court’s decision to adjourn the trial.

An anonymous aggrieved customer, speaking to the media,“the number of people who have died as a result of the Menzgold scandal is pathetic. And because of that, when we come to court and see how this guy talks and behaves, it makes some of us very upset. That is why I was upset with the fact that this guy shows no sign of remorse or regret.”

Asked whether he believed there would be justice, he said, “Definitely. Now that the government has appointed the attorney general to represent the customers, I know that there will be justice.”

  • 79% of Ghanaians express support for Akufo-Addo despite economic challenges – Report

79% of Ghanaians express support for Akufo-Addo despite economic challenges – Report

In the midst of Ghana’s ongoing economic challenges, a recent poll of party delegates has brought to light a remarkable revelation that President Akufo-Addo continues to enjoy strong support within his own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The extensive survey, which gathered the views of more than 4,300 NPP delegates from across the nation, has disclosed that an astonishing 79% of respondents express approval of the President’s performance.

Conducted by Global Info Analytics from October 2 to 11, this poll takes on added significance as the NPP prepares to choose its next presidential candidate in the upcoming November 4th elections.

Akufo-Addo’s remarkable job approval rating is especially noteworthy considering Ghana’s ongoing economic challenges, marked by soaring inflation and currency depreciation.

The data indicates that the party’s base remains firmly behind their leader, even in times of adversity, demonstrating a steadfast confidence in his leadership.

As the NPP gears up for a challenging re-election campaign in 2024, unity and cohesion around President Akufo-Addo become of paramount importance.

The party aims to avoid any public discord or disagreements regarding the President’s economic management, which have arisen in recent times.

This is despite recent public criticism of government policies by dissenting candidate and former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen, and the immediate past Agriculture Minister and NPP Presidential hopeful, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

What remains uncertain is whether this public display of support will translate into votes for the establishment candidate, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia.

While the NPP’s presidential race remains wide open, with the Vice President leading at 43.5% among delegates, the prominent emergence of MP Kennedy Agyapong, boasting 23.5% support, promises an electrifying and closely contested contest in the future.

Whoever secures the NPP nomination will undoubtedly depend on the President’s wholehearted endorsement to revitalize the party’s prospects and guide Ghana toward economic recovery.

If the insights gleaned from the delegates’ poll are any indication, Nana Akufo-Addo may play a pivotal role in determining the NPP’s future success, a factor that could prove critical as the nation approaches the 2024 elections.

11,200 wax prints intercepted by GRA

Officials from the Eastern Corridor Monitoring Team of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a shipment of 11,200 counterfeit wax prints, hidden within an assorted merchandise in a 40-footer container.

Additionally, the team confiscated 6,000 mobile phones concealed within assorted goods. These illicit items were discovered at the Dabala checkpoint following a tip-off received by the Customs Division of the GRA.

It is suspected that the importers of these goods were attempting to evade taxes. Notably, the importers declared only 98 full pieces out of the 11,200 wax prints, which were valued at GH¢1.3 million. They paid a duty of GH¢24,000 on these declared items along with the assorted merchandise.

Senior Revenue Officer Dari Abdallah, the head of the Eastern Corridor Monitoring Team, emphasized the importance of diligent checks at the border due to the sophistication of smugglers and the use of unapproved routes. Customs officials often rely on informants to apprehend illegal importers.

Upon a thorough examination, it was revealed that the hidden consignments contained wax prints.

The owner of the goods confessed and offered to pay a penalty, although at a reduced rate compared to the required 100%.

Emmanuel Parker, the Second-in-Command at Aflao Collection, highlighted the challenge posed by the influx of smuggled goods through the vast and porous borders.

He called for increased logistics and customs personnel presence to combat smuggling activities along the Eastern Corridor. Parker emphasized the need to address this issue, as smugglers frequently adapt to border closure measures by using alternative routes.

In anticipation of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries scheduled for November 4, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has assured the party of comprehensive security measures.

During a meeting held in Accra on October 26, the IGP emphasized the importance of cooperation between the NPP and the police to ensure a smooth and incident-free election.

Dr. Dampare stated, “We want to assure you that on the 4th of November, we are going to provide an overdose of security, and it will be excellent, it will be awesome. All that we require from you is to support us, and as each one of us plays their role, we will be able to ensure that the Police will do their work, the EC will do their work, and all the people who will be voting across the country will also come out freely, willingly, and vote. All the agents will also do what they are supposed to do for all of us to finish that process, and all of us will be winners at the level of the party and the country.”

Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye, Chair of the Elections Committee of the NPP, emphasized the party’s commitment to following the rules governing the internal elections.

He urged the police to arrest and take action against individuals who violate the rules of engagement, highlighting the NPP’s dedication to upholding the law.

  • 48% of Ghanaians adhere to regular handwashing practice – Sanitation Ministry

48% of Ghanaians adhere to regular handwashing practice – Sanitation Ministry

Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Dr. Freda Prempeh, has revealed that just 48 percent of Ghanaians consistently practice proper hand hygiene by using soap.

She cited findings from a scientific report, the MICS 2018 Report, which the Ministry had access to.

According to the report, 24 percent of households have designated areas or tools for handwashing, but these lack both soap and water.

Additionally, approximately 28 percent of households do not have any facilities for handwashing when exposed to germs.

The report underscored disparities in the availability of basic handwashing facilities, with coverage ranging from 42 percent in rural areas to 56 percent in urban areas.

Such disparities, combined with ineffective handwashing promotion programs, increase the risk of individuals contracting diseases that can adversely affect their health, education, and economic well-being.

Dr. Prempeh conveyed this information during the 2023 national media launch of Global Handwashing Day in Cape Coast. The event, held under the theme “Saving lives through handwashing with soap,” aligns with the global theme, “Clean hands are within reach.”

It was organized by the Ministry of Sanitation to educate media personnel about the National Hand Hygiene For All (HH4A) strategy and roadmap for Ghana (2022-2030).

HH4A is an initiative initiated by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, aiming to ensure universal access to hand hygiene through a three-R approach: responding to COVID-19, rebuilding post-pandemic, and reimagining hand hygiene as a cultural practice.

This initiative also supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6.2, which seeks to achieve equitable access to sanitation and hygiene for all, eliminate open defecation, and address the specific needs of women, girls, and vulnerable populations. The initiative identifies 12 settings where handwashing facilities should be available, including households, schools, healthcare facilities, workplaces, markets, transport terminals, correctional centers, places of worship, refugee camps, eateries, and event or recreational centers.

Dr. Prempeh emphasized the importance of regular handwashing in disease prevention, citing its effectiveness in preventing infections and communicable diseases such as cholera, hepatitis, typhoid, and respiratory infections.

She highlighted that the importance of handwashing became even more evident during the global coronavirus pandemic and has proven to be a cost-effective and efficient measure in managing disease outbreaks.

Mrs. Marigold Assan, the Central Regional Minister, echoed the significance of handwashing with soap, emphasizing its role in removing germs from hands and preventing infections.

She reminded people that they often touch their eyes, nose, and mouth without realizing it, making regular handwashing essential to stay healthy and prevent the spread of germs.

To further raise awareness, a gathering was held at the Kotokuraba market, where traders were educated about the importance of handwashing and its proper techniques.

Akan Constituency gears up for NPP Primaries with 634 delegates to vote

Approximately 634 delegates from the Akan Constituency are poised to participate in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries scheduled for November 4.

The delegate count encompasses a diverse range, comprising 10 Council of Elders, one Founding Member, 17 Constituency Executives, 36 Electoral Area Coordinators, and 570 Polling Station Executives.

Mr. Abdul Sataru Merigah, serving as the Akan NPP Constituency Secretary, shared this information during an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Kadjebi, Oti Region.

The Kadjebi-Asato Senior High School (KASEC) has been designated as the venue for the event, and Mr. Merigah urged all delegates to ensure a peaceful and harmonious process. In his words, “The election is a family affair; let us remain united after November 4.”

Mr. Frank Worlanyo, a delegate, expressed the necessity of rebranding the Party by advocating for non-Akan individuals to assume leadership roles within the NPP for the 2024 elections. He argued that this move would help dispel the perception that the NPP is primarily an Akan party.

Mr. Eric Hehemekpe, the Freetown Electoral Area Coordinator, emphasized the importance of transparency and a fair election, given that it is an internal party affair.

He stressed that such measures would contribute to party unity, diminish animosity, and reduce the likelihood of post-election divisions, ultimately strengthening the Party’s efforts to secure victory in the upcoming election.

President Akufo-Addo has reiterated the potential of the Planting for Food and Jobs Programme (PFJ) to achieve self-sufficiency in food production and supply for the nation.

He expressed confidence that the program could meet its objectives given the required investment.

During the Presidential Roundtable Discussion with development partners on the PFJ, the President affirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the scheme and creating an enabling environment for its success.

He stated, “I am firmly convinced that the second phase of the Planting for Food and Jobs programme will raise awareness about the potential of Ghana’s agriculture and attract the necessary investments so that we can achieve food security and economic growth in Ghana. On behalf of the government, I wholeheartedly acknowledge our responsibility to create a conducive environment, and we are resolutely committed to meeting this expectation through regulatory measures and other incentives.”

Additionally, Deputy Minister of Finance Dr. John Kumah assured that the Ministry would release the necessary funds to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to facilitate the program’s effective implementation.

“By the numbers, the budgetary allocation from the Ministry of Finance has increased from GH¢188 million to GH¢857.8 million in 2022 under President Akufo-Addo. Crucially, we have maintained our resolve and commitment to the agricultural sector.

In 2021, we paid GH¢834 million to MOFA, and despite the difficult economic conditions in 2022, the Ministry of Finance ensured that 92% of MOFA’s approved budget was released.”

We will rally behind winner of NPP presidential primaries – Gabby

Prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Gabby Otchere-Darko, has affirmed the party’s commitment to wholeheartedly support the victor of the upcoming presidential primaries scheduled for November 4.

These elections are part of the party’s preparations for the 2024 general elections.

The contenders for the NPP’s presidential ticket include Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong, Former Member of Parliament for Mampong Francis Addai-Nimoh, and former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

In his statement, Mr. Otchere-Darko expressed the belief that the new leadership, upon ascending to power, would not only uphold the party’s tradition and principles but also draw valuable lessons from past experiences.

This learning process, he noted, would be essential for making the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition even stronger and more effective in fulfilling its core mandate of leading and serving responsibly in the development of Ghana.

He emphasized that the party’s ultimate mission is to establish a prosperous society that offers opportunities and dignity to every child born in the nation, regardless of their background.

Gabby Otchere-Darko assured party members and supporters that the NPP, as it has done historically, will coalesce around the newly elected leader once the party makes its choice.

The statement concluded with a prayer for unity and the realization of the party’s goals.

    Below is his full statement

“An environment that is not safe to disagree in is not an environment focused on growth – it’s an environment focused on control.”  – Varun Singhal

This is why we love and admire the New Patriotic Party. The quote above represents the NPP. So, if you are a member or sympathiser, don’t be disillusioned by some of the unfettered expressions of harsh views, however critical, jaundiced or ungrateful they may sound.

In spite of all the challenges it is facing, the NPP must stay true to its motto: “Development in Freedom.”

The NPP, if its critics may admit, has persevered to develop our nation even under the most challenging of economic situations of recent years. With the harsh cost of living crisis, the anger and resentment of the people are understandable. But, the efforts being made to keep public services going and funding development projects should also not be lost on us.

The NPP tolerates and even encourages dissent, including ones most caustic and undeserving. Some of those who were only yesterday, major beneficiaries of the party’s electoral fortunes and were tasked with the leadership responsibilities of helping the President deliver on his mandate, can be heard today leading to a crescendo what sounds like a chorus of doom.

This may give the impression of disunity. But, no.  It is what it is. It is what the NPP has always been, especially in periods of transition. Today, it is heightened and amplified by the speed and distance at which sensational news flies. Free expression is, indeed, the blood that flows through the veins of the Elephant.

In fact, when the party was being formed over three decades ago, the other symbol or motto they considered at the time and nearly settled on was “Ti Koro Nko Agyina”, meaning a constructive meeting of minds calls for heads of varying perspectives.

It is who we are. The NPP is a party of activists and not spectators. It is a family of active and not passive voices.

As some of us fade naturally off the scene in this exciting transition and a new set takes over, we know for sure that this new crop of leadership will not only continue with the tradition and its principles, but will, even more importantly, take positive, instructive lessons from the negative experiences of recent years, the commissions, as well as,  the omissions, and use all that to make the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition even stronger and better in fulfilling the party’s core mandate: which is to lead and serve responsibly in developing Ghana with enterprise and in freedom, with compassion and an even greater sense of urgency.

Ours is to be the lead enablers in the  national mission of establishing a prosperous society of opportunities and dignity for every child born of this land, regardless of his or her background.  Let us never forget that.

Finally, November 4 is just around the corner. The NPP that we know, once the party speaks and a new leader,  with his new direction, is chosen, the Party will rally around him and support him and the cause of the collective. To this and all, we continue to pray…

The donation was received by the District Chief Executive, Divine Osborne Fenu.

Mr. Ofori-Atta expressed his gratitude and encouraged unity, saying, “Let us be encouraged, Ministry of Finance, as a family concerned about what has happened to our brothers and sisters, working with the VRA, we have brought something substantial of GHS2 million to be able to support the relief efforts that are ongoing and to thank Ghanaians for their spontaneous response.”

Regarding the flood situation, Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Seji Saji Amedonu, reported that water levels have started to recede. He anticipated that it would take about a week for the water levels to completely subside, given the current rate of decrease. However, Mr. Amedonu emphasized that even after the water recedes, significant work would be needed before residents can return to their homes due to the high level of water contamination.

The displaced residents, who have been seeking refuge in schools and makeshift structures, may need to endure a bit longer. The government is yet to decide whether to relocate them permanently or establish more durable shelters for their accommodation.

Over the past two weeks, flood victims, resulting from the spillage of water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams, have called for government and donor assistance in resettlement efforts. There have been proposals from the Minority in Parliament to relocate the victims to the stalled Saglemi housing project. However, Deputy Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, indicated that tests are being conducted to determine if the affected areas are suitable for resettlement. She explained, “People are there testing the water to see whether the places affected are still habitable. It is that information that will inform some decisions by the committee.”

Keta Lagoon: Fishing activities temporarily halted

The Keta Municipal Security Council has imposed a temporary fishing ban in the region due to elevated water levels caused by the opening of the flood control gate at the Havedzi-Kedzi estuary.

The gate was opened to facilitate the outflow of the Keta Lagoon into the sea, which had breached its boundaries due to the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Emmanuel Gemegah, the Municipal Chief Executive of Keta, explained that this measure aims to safeguard the lives of fisherfolk.

He pointed out that the spillage from the Akosombo Dam has significantly raised the water level in the Keta Lagoon, and the combination of factors such as the River Volta, other water bodies, and rainfall has created substantial pressure in the lagoon.

Allowing anyone near the area could result in potential loss of lives and property.

“The spillage of the Akosombo Dam ends up in the Keta Lagoon because where it will have to pass through into the sea has been affected and therefore raised the water level. Apart from the River Volta, we also have other water bodies in addition to rainfall and so there is high pressure in the Keta Lagoon, and we feel if we should allow anybody to get close, we may lose lives and properties.”

  • Akosombo Dam spillage: 2024 budget to include long-term relief for victims – Ofori-Atta

Akosombo Dam spillage: 2024 budget to include long-term relief for victims – Ofori-Atta

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has announced that long-term relief measures for the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage will be considered in the formulation of the 2024 budget.

After visiting affected communities, Mr. Ofori-Atta stated that while the government had provided some relief items for the victims, more assistance would be provided, and this support would also be included in next year’s budget.

“We have mobilized a few things that we would like to share but I think we are also in the budget season and therefore it will not just be numbers that we are working on but true feelings in the field and therefore the need to look at these social interventions in a real way. We will certainly give this an expression immediately and also in the budget,” he stated.

He commended Citi FM/Citi TV for their rapid and compassionate response in assisting the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, expressing his deep appreciation for the role played by Samuel Atta Mensah, Managing Director of Citi FM/Citi TV, and Bernard Avle, General Manager of Citi TV/Citi FM, in supporting the affected communities.

Citi TV/Citi FM’s relief campaign has been instrumental in providing aid to the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, which has left many communities in dire need of assistance.

Furthermore, Citi TV and Citi FM have pledged to offer scholarships to the top three Senior High School students in the Torkpo community within the Shai Osudoku district of the Greater Accra Region who excel in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

These scholarships will cover the students’ fees at any tertiary institution in the country.

This announcement was made as part of the “OperationRebuild” initiative, which aims to construct resettlement centers for individuals affected by the Akosombo dam spillage.

The first resettlement center, located at a school in Torkpo, will be converted into classrooms once the floodwaters recede and it is safe for people to return to their homes.

Two other areas will also benefit from the initiative, with each resettlement center being a dormitory-style building that can accommodate at least 200 people and will include ancillary facilities such as washrooms.

  • Bawumia has a clear path to victory in NPP Primaries unlike Kennedy Agyapong – Nigel Gaisie

Bawumia has a clear path to victory in NPP Primaries unlike Kennedy Agyapong – Nigel Gaisie

The founder and leader of the Prophetic Hill Chapel, Prophet Nigel Gaisie, has issued a prophecy predicting that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will be the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an interview with the media on October 26, 2023, Nigel Gaisie confidently stated that the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central and a contender in the flagbearership race, Kennedy Agyapong, has no chance of winning.

According to Nigel Gaisie, Bawumia is the chosen candidate, and although he originally saw it prophetically for Alan, circumstances have shifted.

He attributed Kennedy Agyapong’s diminished prospects to his contentious stance towards pastors, including himself, which, in his view, has affected his chances.

Nigel Gaisie stated, “I saw that Bawumia would win. Prophetically, it was for Alan, but they twisted his hands… and I saw that Bawumia would take it, so Bawumia would win.

“…if not for what Kennedy Agyapong did to some of us, he stood a very good chance, but he has messed it up. And I think that when he is alone on his pillow, he will regret some of these regrettable regrets. If not, he is a fine man; very, very fine man.

He added, “Even for my sake alone, there is no way God would honour him. Some of us have convenants before God. Some of us serve God; some of us have worked with God, and you attack me; attack me; it is unfortunate”.

The NPP’s presidential primaries are scheduled for Saturday, November 4, 2023, with four candidates in contention: Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central Legislator Kennedy Agyapong, former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and former Mampong legislator Francis Addai-Nimoh, all vying for the party’s presidential candidacy in the 2024 elections.

  • Kennedy Agyapong is a reckless speaker – Frederick Opare-Ansah

Kennedy Agyapong is a reckless speaker – Frederick Opare-Ansah

Former Member of Parliament (MP) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) representing the Suhum Constituency, Frederick Opare-Ansah, has characterized NPP flagbearer contender Kennedy Agyapong as someone who engages in loose and imprudent speech and lacks the intellectual capacity to make meaningful contributions to parliamentary deliberations.

Mr Opare-Ansah argued that Kennedy Agyapong, who represents the Assin Central Constituency, has failed to make any substantial contributions or engage in “seminal” discussions on the parliamentary floor despite serving as an MP for over two decades. He suggested that Agyapong’s inability to do so is indicative of his lack of intellectual prowess.

He further asserted that Kennedy Agyapong’s primary mode of operation is making indiscreet remarks and insulting others on campaign platforms, rather than engaging in substantive parliamentary discourse. Opare-Ansah questioned Agyapong’s parliamentary record, stating, “He sat in Parliament for 20 years. Give me one statement he has made as an MP apart from being on the radio to insult and speak indiscreetly on campaign platforms.”

During an interview with the media, Mr Opare-Ansah, who supports Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s bid to become the NPP’s flagbearer, emphasized that any attempts by Kennedy Agyapong and his team to undermine the people’s will in the forthcoming National Delegates Conference for selecting a flagbearer will face fierce opposition.

Kennedy Agyapong is one of four contenders seeking to lead the NPP in the 2024 General Elections.

While he is considered a formidable candidate, various surveys and polls indicate that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who convincingly won the Super Delegates Conference, is the overwhelming favorite to win the election scheduled for November 4, 2023.

  • JJ Rawlings left no legacy for Ghana – Kofi Amoabeng

JJ Rawlings left no legacy for Ghana – Kofi Amoabeng

The founder of the now-defunct UT Bank,Captain (retired) Prince Kofi Amoabeng, has expressed a critical perspective on the legacy of the late Jerry John Rawlings, Ghana’s first President of the Fourth Republic.

On October 27, 2023, during an interview with the media, Kofi Amoabeng expressed his belief that Rawlings did not make a substantial contribution to Ghana, countering the claims made by others.

Mr Amoabeng emphasized that Rawlings had a significant opportunity to bring about transformation in Ghana but failed to do so. He argued that the most noteworthy achievement of the former president was ushering in the Fourth Republic.

“…when Papa Jay came, what did he do for Ghana? After all the people he killed, what did he do for Ghana?

“He didn’t do anything. What happened to us? But we had some stability, and he gave us the Fourth Republic,” he said.

These remarks from the former UT Bank CEO were made in response to suggestions that Kennedy Agyapong, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, shares similar traits with Jerry John Rawlings and could potentially be a transformative president for Ghana.

Mr Amoabeng rejected the idea that Ghana requires a ‘radical president’ for transformation, highlighting that even with Rawlings in power, substantial change did not materialize.

  • Mahama is the competent leader for Ghana – Captain Kofi Amoabeng

Mahama is the competent leader for Ghana – Captain Kofi Amoabeng

Former member of the Ghana Armed Forces and the founder of the now-defunct UT Bank, Captain (retired) Prince Kofi Amoabeng, has expressed his belief that former President John Dramani Mahama is the most suitable candidate to lead Ghana at this moment.

He asserted that Mahama, who is the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), possesses the experience gained during his first term, equipping him with the necessary knowledge to propel the nation forward.

Amoabeng made these comments during an interview on Kingdom FM on October 26, 2023. He further emphasized that Mahama is well aware of the mistakes made during his previous term and is unlikely to repeat them, noting, “I look at President Mahama, and what I have to say about him is that we have never had somebody who has been president before becoming president again; it is only Mahama.”

He continued by drawing a parallel with his own experiences, explaining that just as he wouldn’t make the same mistakes if he were to revive UT Bank, he believes Mahama has learned from his previous presidency.

“…I look at President Mahama, and what I have to say about him is that we have never had somebody who has been president before becoming president again; it is only Mahama.

“And therefore, if you ask me, it is worth giving Mahama the chance because he has been there before. Do you think if UT should be back to where it was and I go back, I would repeat those same mistakes? I won’t repeat the same mistakes. I know exactly the mistakes that I committed.

“…I think Ghanaians have to take Mahama very seriously because he has been there before. He must have a lot of regrets; he must have a whole lot of things that he wants to change. And I know him to some extent. I know that he is a very, very humane person and quite humble too,” he said.

He urged Ghanaians to seriously consider supporting Mahama’s leadership during the 2024 elections.

Amoabeng concluded by underlining his belief that while Mahama may have been misled on certain issues during his first term, such occurrences would be unlikely to recur in a potential new presidency.

  • No coup in Ghana due to military due to Politicization – Kofi Amoabeng

No coup in Ghana due to military due to Politicization – Kofi Amoabeng

The founder of the now-defunct UT Bank, Captain (retired) Prince Kofi Amoabeng, has pointed out that the sole positive development in Ghana under the current government is the absence of a military coup.

He emphasized that the overall situation in Ghana is currently quite challenging, and the reason for the absence of any military intervention is the perceived politicization of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Mr Amoabeng noted that successive governments, with a particular focus on the present administration led by Akufo-Addo, have successfully infused politics into all governmental institutions, including the military.

“One of the biggest changes we have in this country is that, when parties come to power, especially this government, they politicise all the institutions. It is a very dangerous thing to do, and that is why we have not been progressing.

“If you put your own people as heads, it is either they don’t know what to do or they are qualified, but they are used as stooges, so even though you know what to do, you dare not do it; you do what we say you should do because we put you there.

“…the only good thing that has come out of it is that there is no coup. No coup because the army has been politicised and therefore the heads are NPP. And in the army now, which is very sad, soldiers are polarized politically,” he said.

He added that when he was in the army, personnel were forbidden from engaging in politics, but now it has become normal.

“When I was in the army, religion and politics were the two things we never discussed. Because you were there for the state,” he said.

  • We want anyone apart from Adwoa Safo – Dome-Kwabenya market women

We want anyone apart from Adwoa Safo – Dome-Kwabenya market women

During a recent visit, some market women at the Dome-Kwabenya market voiced their displeasure with Sarah Adwoa Safo, the current member of parliament, by jeering and heckling her.

The Member of Parliament encountered significant opposition from her constituents during her attempt to rebuild ties with them after neglecting her role in the constituency and in parliament for more than a year.

Adwoa Safo is seen in a widely shared social media video attempting to approach market women by extending a kind handshake.

But the sounds of others cheering, hooting, and expressing their disapproval overpower her attempts.

Some of the market women can be heard shouting, “Adwoa Safo, we want change!” and “Adwoa Safo, we don’t want you again!”

The former Minister for Women and Children’s Affairs engaged with other traders who had raised their hands to welcome her, ignoring the cries of disgust and going about her regular business.

The prolonged absence of Adwoa Safo from parliament in 2022 caused a great deal of criticism. She departed the nation in November 2021, and despite being called to account for her absences, she did not show up before the Privileges Committee multiple times.

The Speaker of Parliament decided that the committee’s findings was not final and that the House as a whole needed to make a judgment before her seat could be declared vacant.

Disagreement arose among the members of parliament about this.

In response to the controversy she created when she was away from her parliamentary responsibilities for an extended period of time, Adwoa Safo recently apologized to the President and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

  • You’re heading in the right direction, we’re standing by you – Christian Council tells Dampare

You’re heading in the right direction, we’re standing by you – Christian Council tells Dampare

The Christian Council of Ghana has expressed its satisfaction with the proactive efforts of the police service in engaging with key stakeholders to improve public relations.

This approval follows a stakeholder meeting held at the Pentecost Transit Guest House in Accra, where the Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and members of the Police Management Board interacted with the council.

The meeting is part of the police service’s ongoing engagement with key stakeholders in preparation for year-end security arrangements.

During the program, Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, expressed gratitude on behalf of the council, commending the IGP for providing valuable education on security matters. He assured the police of the council’s support, emphasizing the value of the information shared.

Presiding Bishop of the Life International Church and First Vice-President of the GPCC council, Bishop Gordon Kisseih, also conveyed the council’s satisfaction with the police service’s leadership and its approach to various issues.

He expressed confidence in the direction taken by the police.

“We thank you for the education. These are things people pay to acquire but you have shared them with us for free, we are grateful. You have our support as a council. You are on the right track and I want to assure you that you have our backing,” he added.

In response, the IGP pledged to provide enhanced security measures to the public during the Christmas season, assuring that Ghanaians would receive an “overdose” of security.

  • I chose Bawumia as my running mate due to his honesty – Akufo-Addo

I chose Bawumia as my running mate due to his honesty – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has provided insight into his rationale for selecting Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate.

Akufo-Addo explained that he chose Dr Bawumia for his exceptional qualities of truthfulness, goal-driven approach, and unwavering dedication to achieving common objectives.

The President also emphasized the importance of regional balance and national unity in Ghana’s leadership, highlighting,“In terms of the balance, people from the south, people from the north…I think that for the unity of the country, it is good that we have a leadership where Northerners and Southerners are together so that the country can remain united.”

These remarks were made during a recent visit to the Jubilee House, Ghana’s presidential residence, by students and educators from the Association International School on October 26.

Furthermore, President Akufo-Addo commended Dr. Bawumia for his honesty and direct communication style, expressing a preference for individuals who speak candidly.

He stated, “He [Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia] is an honest person. He speaks honestly to you. He is not one of those people who you have to guess what they are trying to say; he says what he has to say directly.”

President Akufo-Addo’s decision to select Dr. Bawumia as his running mate initially raised questions and concerns within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and among political observers, as Dr. Bawumia was not a well-known figure in Ghanaian politics at the time.

Nonetheless, Akufo-Addo stood by his choice, and they ran together in the 2008 and 2012 elections, narrowly missing victory on both occasions to the NDC led by John Evans Atta Mills and John Mahama, respectively.

In 2016 and 2020, the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia ticket secured victory, and they have since served as President and Vice President, respectively, for a combined period of six years and ten months.

  • Residents of Sekondi-Takoradi hit the streets to demand better roads

Residents of Sekondi-Takoradi hit the streets to demand better roads

Residents of Sekondi-Takoradi in the Western Region have taken to the streets to protest against poor road conditions, underdevelopment, and ineffective governance.

This demonstration, known as ‘Sekondi-Takoradi Deserves Better,’ reflects their discontent with the deteriorating state of local roads, the lack of development, and what they perceive as inadequate leadership in the region.

Many of the protesters were dressed in black and red attire, holding placards with messages such as “Takoradi Deserves Better,” “We Are Tired of Poor Leadership,” and “Fix Our Roads,” among others.

Samuel Gyimah, the Convener of the Concerned Youth of Sekondi-Takoradi, explained that the decision to take to the streets stems from the long-standing neglect of Sekondi-Takoradi.

“We are demonstrating because of the bad state of roads we have over here, hospitals, traffic lights are not working, streetlights are not working and the town is totally dark in the evening and nothing works over here.

“We want to go and ask our leaders if they are leading us to truth or they are just denying us of our rights.”

“We are demonstrating this morning because nothing works here and development is backsliding. The roads are terribly bad, unemployment is killing the youth and many things are not working.

“Leadership is not working so we have decided to speak and talk to leadership that we deserve better because many things that are used to develop the country come from the Western Region, of which Sekondi-Takoradi is the capital, yet our roads are bad and nothing works here,” Philip Fiifi Buckman, an aggrieved resident added.

  • Akosombo dam spillage: Pavilions must be built for affected students – Minority to VRA

Akosombo dam spillage: Pavilions must be built for affected students – Minority to VRA

The Minority in Parliament has urged the Volta River Authority (VRA) to assume the responsibility of constructing temporary pavilions for students affected by the spillage of excess water from the Akosombo Dam.

Data from the North Tongu Education Directorate indicates that over 14,000 students have experienced disruptions in their academic activities due to the situation, with various classrooms being utilized as shelters for affected residents.

The Ranking Member on the Education Committee of Parliament, Peter Nortsu-Kotoe, who spoke to the media, emphasized the need for the VRA to allocate funds to address the issue.

“The classrooms have become safe havens for the victims, and they are occupying all the classrooms. Some of the classrooms are still under water, and so the VRA must commit some money to put up pavilions so that the schools can reopen for normal academic work to resume,” he stated.

The Minority also supports the decision of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to impose administrative sanctions on school heads who allowed JHS one and two students to participate in the 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

“The policy is that you write your examination in JHS3, and that has been the policy. So any school authority that violates that policy opens himself or herself up to any punitive measures. The Minority will not be against the GES making this policy work; otherwise, students in other schools will be disadvantaged, and the system will not be in order,” Nortsu-Kotoe added.

Adele admits she was once an alcoholic

Singer Adele has made the decision to abstain from alcohol. During her recent Las Vegas performance, as she engaged with a concertgoer who was enjoying a beverage, the singer disclosed to her audience that she had “quit drinking some time ago.” This revelation was captured in a video shared on social media.

“It feels like forever,” she said, revealing that this new chapter began “maybe three and a half months ago.”

She went on to lament, “It’s boring. Oh my god, it’s boring.”

“I mean, I was literally a borderline alcoholic for quite a lot of my twenties,” she said.

The “Hello” singer told her audience she has also stopped drinking caffeine.

Adele has previously opened up about her complex relationship with alcohol. In a conversation with Oprah in 2021, she humorously mentioned that she was likely “keeping the alcohol industry alive” following her divorce from entrepreneur Simon Konecki.

Adele and Konecki publicly announced their separation in 2019 and have a shared child, Angelo, who was born in 2012.

While Adele didn’t divulge the specific reasons behind her recent decision to abstain from alcohol, she did encourage the concert attendee to savor their whiskey sour during their interaction.

“I’m very, very jealous,” she quipped.

  • Why Frimpong-Boateng allegedly cried at Jubilee House

Why Frimpong-Boateng allegedly cried at Jubilee House

Host of “Good Evening Ghana” on Metro TV, Paul Adom-Ochere, has claimed that former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, was in tears when President Akufo-Addo informed him that he would not be reappointed.

In one of his television broadcasts, Adom-Ochere disclosed that he acquired this information while present at the Jubilee House, where he was in the process of gathering details pertaining to the ministerial appointments to be made by President Akufo-Addo.

Adom-Ochere mentioned that on occasions when he visited the Jubilee House, he overheard conversations about Prof. Frimpong-Boateng breaking down in tears upon receiving the news from President Akufo-Addo.

“I’m going to show you some way that’s some way what it means I’m going to show you in documents and therefore a decision was taken that our friend should not continue as minister of environment this is where the matter begins and ends.

“When the senior man was invited to be told that he cannot continue as Minister people who saw him at the Jubilee House remember that he was in tears I didn’t see him but so many people have testified that was crying said how did I didn’t I wasn’t there no because that time because we’re looking for story every day we go to Jubilee House you’re looking for story about who is going to minister of what.

“If you remember our social media page were speculating this going to that’s how you get the story from I go to Jubilee House and you talk sniff around and you get the information so every day journalists were there and I’ll go there too I don’t remember seeing Frimpong Boateng  but then everyone said oh he was crying well that’s the matter that he was unhappy that he was not going to be part of the ministerial staff”.

He alleged that the former minister’s removal was largely instigated by certain individuals within the government.

These individuals, he claimed, were uncomfortable with how Prof. Frimpong-Boateng was managing the fight against illegal mining (galamsey), as it could potentially expose them.

“So what is Frimpong-Boateng, what is the real meaning behind the story. So it begins like this in 2000 elections occurred by the time elections were occurring there were a lot of concerns expressed about galamsey particularly the efforts of Akufo-Addo’s government to stop galamsey was appeared to be creating some difficulties in the hinterland.

“The government sat in Accra, Frimpong-Boateng was in charge of the committee and plenty problems were happening now as a result of all of these problems my understanding is that the president met with Frimpong-Boateng at some point in 2021 when he was reviewing his ministers and all that you know the president had the monitoring and evaluation department people think they didn’t work, Akoto Osei did a good job.

“Akoto Osei was monitoring and reporting to the president when other ministers didn’t know that was reporting to them so the government was concerned that this whole Frimpong Boateng thing and the galamsey thing is becoming some way,” he added.

Prof. Frimpong-Boateng served as the Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation from 2017 to 2021.

He was the then Chairman of the now-dissolved Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (ICIM)

He is a well-known cardiothoracic surgeon and the founder of the National Cardiothoracic Centre.

  • Frimpong-Boateng was in tears when Akufo-Addo told him he will not be reappointed – Paul Adom Otchere

“The government sat in Accra, Frimpong-Boateng was in charge of the committee and plenty problems were happening now as a result of all of these problems my understanding is that the president met with Frimpong-Boateng at some point in 2021 when he was reviewing his ministers and all that you know the president had the monitoring and evaluation department people think they didn’t work Akoto Osei did a good job.

  • The entire Joy FM newsroom doesn’t understand 200 penalty unit – Paul Adom Otchere

The host of “Good Evening Ghana” on Metro TV, Paul Adom-Ochere, has expressed his astonishment at the alleged misinterpretation of the legal term “200 penalty units” by Joy FM in relation to the UTV invasion incident.

The 16 accused persons who invaded the United Television (UTV) studios at Tesano in the Greater Accra Region on October 7, 2023, were convicted and sentenced to a fine of 200 penalty units each which amounts to GH₵ 2,400.00, and in default 3 months imprisonment by the Achimota District Court.

During one of his shows, Adom-Ochere raised questions about the level of comprehension within the Joy FM newsroom, underscoring the necessity for a clear understanding of legal concepts when reporting on such matters.

He revealed his embarrassment when the Joy FM newsroom suggested that the fine of 200 penalty units per individual equates to 200 Ghana Cedis.
He mentioned engaging in a discussion with a lawyer friend due to these assertions made by the multimedia group.

Adom-Ochere stated that he found it perplexing that these individuals were fined only GHS 200 for the disruption they caused at UTV.

“Sometimes when you listen to radio, you will ask the question that how do they pay broadcasters. Look what happened the other day, I was so terribly embarrassed. The whole Joy FM newsroom, they don’t understand 200 penalty units, all of them sitting there.

“They couldn’t call Samson Lardi the host of News File to ask him. They went on a tangent to broadcast to the nation an important radio station like Joy FM. They broadcasted to the nation that at the court the judge said that the thugs who invaded UTV should pay GHS 200.

“I started getting confused so I called one of the lawyers and said boss you people the people who invaded UTV the court find them GHS200 per person? He said Paul I don’t believe this. I said what don’t you believe? I said the thing is on Joy Fm and you don’t believe what, I was actually harsh on the phone,” he indicated.

The individuals who are affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stormed the UTV studios during the live broadcast of its entertainment program, United Showbiz, shortly after it commenced.

The show then abruptly went off air while commercials filled the screen. The group trooped in to demand the removal of musician Kwame A-Plus, from the programme for tearing up a letter said to be from the communication wing of the NPP.

Videos of the incident went viral on social media with many condemning the intrusion, while others questioned the state of security at the media house.

Hours later, the Police in a statement announced that it had arrested 16 persons involved in the incident.

They were subsequently charged with being on the premises for unlawful purposes and arraigned before court October 16, 2023.

The accused persons pleaded guilty to the charge against them. They were, therefore, convicted on their own pleas and sentenced to a fine of 200 penalty units each which amounts to GH₵ 2,400.00, and in default 3 months imprisonment.

They were also ordered by the Court to sign a bond to be of good behaviour for 6 months in default 6 months imprisonment.

  • You are too quiet, the silence is deafening – Apostle Lamptey to Christian Council

You are too quiet, the silence is deafening – Apostle Lamptey to Christian Council

The head pastor of Believers House of Worship International, Apostle Abraham Lamptey, has criticized the Christian Council for not addressing President Akufo-Addo’s remarks, where he said, “you don’t vote for me,” to flood victims caused by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams in the Volta Region.

Apostle Lamptey expressed his disappointment in the president’s comments, deeming them unfortunate, and he lamented the absence of condemnation from the moral society.

Speaking in a video shared on social media on October 19, 2023, the pastor characterized Akufo-Addo’s statements as unbecoming of a president and called for their condemnation.

He expressed his sadness at the silence of the Christian Council and the Peace Council.

Lamptey went on to emphasize the importance of speaking out against wrongdoings in the country, stating, “… I’m saddened by what is going on. The Christian Council is quiet. I’m a Christian so I would say Christian Council, do I even belong to that? The Peace Council is quiet.

“When your stomach leads you, your destination would be the toilet. You can imagine God saying, excuse my language, because our brothers and sisters who are in Islam are not Christians so he would not supply them with the air to breathe.

“Would we have people to win for him?,” he asked.

President Akufo-Addo on Monday, October 16, paid a visit to Mepe, one of the areas severely affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage in the Volta Region.

During his address to local chiefs and residents, he acknowledged that they had not supported his political party but emphasized his presence as the President of the nation.

“When these things happen and government acts, politics does not come into the matter at all. When I took the oath of office as president, I took the oath as president for every single individual in Ghana, all people in Ghana, all districts and whether they voted for me or not, once I have taken the oath, I am the President of all the people so Togbe, I want the people here, beginning with you, and the elders to understand that when something like this happens and Government acts, Government is acting for Ghanaians, all Ghanaians.

“I came here because Ghanaians are having difficulties and are suffering, and it is my responsibility to try and help. Because, if it is a question of counting who votes for me and who doesn’t vote for me, then I shouldn’t be here, because you don’t vote for me. But that is not my concern. And, in any event, one day you will vote for me and my party,” the President said among other things.

Some analysts and critics say it was out of place for the President to talk about the people of the Volta Region not voting for him and his New Patriotic Party at such a critical time when they have been devastated by a human-induced disaster. Some people say it was a lighthearted comment gone wrong while others say it was simply a reckless one,” he added.

He further cautioned that Ghanaians who remain silent in the face of wrongdoing are jeopardizing Ghana’s future.

He shed light on the challenges linked to disinformation, particularly in light of recent events, such as the coup in Niger.

Kan-Dapaah remarked, “following the coup in Niger, certain individuals in academia, civil society, and the media, as you may have observed, have been spreading false narratives in support of a coup or military rule.”

He emphasized the gravity of the situation by stating, “and let me reiterate today, from my current position, I can confidently say that handling this information is one of the major security challenges I face on a daily basis.”

The proliferation of false information through various channels has become an increasingly worrisome concern, especially in the context of national security.

10-year-old loses life after accidentally falling into septic tank

A ten-year-old girl has tragically lost her life after allegedly falling into a septic tank.

This sorrowful event took place on October 17, 2023 within the Berekum East Municipality in the Bono Region.

According to Kwame Adez, who shared the incident on Nayankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, the child’s mother had instructed her to retrieve a chamber pot that was placed on the septic tank.

Unbeknownst to the girl, a section of the tank had developed cracks, and when she stepped on it to reach the pot, she fell into the tank.

Upon realizing that her daughter had been gone for an extended period, the mother went to check and was met with the distressing sight of the damaged SOAK-AWAY pit. She called for assistance upon this discovery.

Police detain two in connection with murder of 27-year-old in Ashanti Region

Two individuals have been apprehended by the Ashanti Region police in connection with the demise of a 27-year-old man who was reportedly stabbed by unknown assailants in Tafo-Pankrono, Ashanti Region.

Owusu Banahene lost his life on October 18, upon reaching the hospital after he was discovered near a public restroom in the vicinity.

While the police are conducting an investigation into the precise cause of his demise, the deceased’s family suspects that the incident may be linked to a long-standing conflict between rival youth from Adabraka and Pankrono.

The passing of the 27-year-old, who had intended to travel abroad on Friday, has incited outrage within the Pankrono community.

The deceased’s brother, Anokye Clinton, has urged the police to expedite their inquiry and ensure the apprehension of the culprits.

However, there has been a substantial police presence, along with intensified patrols, in order to prevent potential retaliatory actions.

“It’s the youth who have been having problems with Pankrono. They always come here, either to steal or fight. If something happens, they don’t know how to resolve their issue. They always come and fight, and it has been going on for centuries, when they come, and we call the police, they come to arrest the person, and the next day the person is walking freely.

“We will not let it slide unless one of them dies too, the deceased was set to travel today to Canada, and every documentation was ready. And the next day, you guys just stabbed him. I was called that someone has stabbed him to death over area fight,” he narrated.

He added, “I expect the police to arrest anyone involved or else actions that do not concern the police will take place. We will not sit down and allow our brother to be murdered just like that, if they don’t arrest all of them, action will be taken”.

The Minority in Parliament has criticized President Akufo-Addo for his remarks made during a visit to the Volta Region following the damage caused by the spillage of excess water from the Akosombo dam.

During his visit, President Akufo-Addo stated that he had come to express sympathy with the residents, regardless of their political affiliation, whether they voted for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) or not.

Nevertheless, the Minority has expressed anger and disappointment over his comments, accusing him of insensitivity and divisiveness.

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has called on the President to apologize to the victims for his “ill-considered statement.”

“It shows the government doesn’t really care that much about the people of Volta Region. On behalf of the people of Ghana, the National Democratic Congress Minority in Parliament wants to apologise to the people of the Volta Region for the statement made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“We consider that statement very unfortunate, and this statement should not come from the father of the land in times like this. It surprises us, and we are really disappointed in the statement coming from H.E. the President. We call on him to also apologise to the people of Volta Region, in particular for what he said,” he said.

The General Secretary of the NDC, Meanwhile, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has also urged the government to provide compensation to the victims of the spillage.

“We came here to offer relief items to you and ensure you are not left in want. We believe that all those affected will benefit from this. We believe that the Volta Region Authority should have notified us before the spillage.

“In certain instances, the VRA should have carried out the spillage in a way that did not harm communities and livelihoods. What we expect from the government now is to compensate the impacted communities. Livelihoods, farms, and homes have been affected, and we call on the government to address the compensation for those affected,” Fifi Kwetey expressed.

Mother, son in police custody over accusations of lynching farmer

Akua Kesewaa, aged 57, and her son, Emmanuel Aboagye, 26, are currently subjects of an investigation conducted by the Oda Police in connection with the lynching of a 56-year-old farmer in Akyem Manso, Eastern Region.

The Oda Municipal Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Daniel Amoako, has disclosed that the incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. on October 12, 2023.

Kesewaa had just returned home after a one-week observance of a deceased relative in Manso. Upon her arrival, a dispute over water erupted between her and a relative named Kwame Poakwa.

This seemingly minor water dispute escalated into a violent confrontation. Kesewaa, driven by anger, initially attacked Poakwa with a club. Subsequently, she summoned her son, Aboagye, to join her in the assault on the farmer.

Chief Superintendent Amoako reported that the mother and son continued to beat Poakwa with clubs until he lost consciousness. A witness to the incident, Michael Assuming, who was awakened from sleep to intervene, also sustained multiple injuries during the altercation.

As a result of the severe beatings, Poakwa lost consciousness and was swiftly taken to the Oda Government Hospital by Good Samaritans.

Unfortunately, medical personnel at the hospital declared him deceased upon his arrival.

Following the incident, Assuming filed a complaint with the Manso police, leading to the apprehension of Kesewaa and Aboagye. They are presently in police custody, awaiting the conclusion of the investigation.

Chief Superintendent Amoako has conveyed that once the investigation process is completed, the two suspects will be brought before the court.

  • Ato Forson trial: I made a mistake – Seth Terkper tells court

Ato Forson trial: I made a mistake – Seth Terkper tells court

A former Minister of Finance, Seth Terkper, has admitted that he granted his deputy, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, authorization to compose a letter to the Bank of Ghana (BoG) requesting the issuance of Letters of Credit (LCs) in favor of Big Sea General Trading Ltd for the procurement of 30 ambulances.

During his testimony on the previous day in a court presided over by a Court of Appeal judge with additional duties as a High Court judge, Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, Mr. Terkper explained that he approved this action in response to the legal advice from the Attorney-General and the Ministry’s Legal Unit.

He stated, “The letter to the Bank of Ghana requesting the setup of the LC originated from the Ministry of Finance and had my full authorization.”

Mr. Terkper clarified that this decision was made to prevent potential government liability in accordance with the guidance provided by the Attorney-General at that time.

In a different context, Dr. Forson, the Minority Leader, along with Richard Jakpa, a private entrepreneur, and Sylvester Anemana, a former Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, are facing allegations of causing a €2.37 million financial loss to the state in connection with the procurement of ambulances.

All three have pleaded not guilty to charges of deliberately causing financial loss to the state, aiding and abetting the willful causing of financial loss to the state, violating the Public Procurement Act, and intentionally misappropriating public assets.

The Attorney-General contends that Dr. Forson directed the LCs to be charged to the Ministry of Health’s budget, contrary to the parliamentary approval for the ambulance procurement.

During his testimony, Mr. Terkper revealed that he had received an opinion from the Attorney-General in 2014, which emphasized that failure to execute the contract with Big Sea could create liability for the government. He stated that the Attorney-General’s opinion clearly indicated that “all necessary government approvals had been obtained” for the contract and that this opinion was legally binding on all government agencies involved in the transaction.

During the cross-examination, Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame inquired whether the payment for the ambulances had been made in error. Mr. Terkper admitted that the payment was indeed made in error, but this occurred because the ministry had believed at the time that Stanbic Bank’s Letters of Credit were still valid under the Parliament-approved agreement. It was only after the Debt Management Unit of the Ministry of Finance alerted him to the fact that Stanbic Bank’s Letters of Credit were no longer valid that the Finance Ministry decided to charge the Ministry of Health budget, contrary to what Parliament had initially approved.

He explained, “On the surface, it may appear contrary to what Parliament approved, but it’s important to grasp the principle that all loans, including Letters of Credit, are ultimately charged to the capital budget of the ministry.”

When questioned about why he had not disclosed his authorization of Dr. Forson’s request for the establishment of the LC during the investigation by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), Mr. Terkper clarified that he lacked the necessary documents from his ministry at that time as he had left office and didn’t want to rely on his memory to respond to investigators.

The case is scheduled to continue on Thursday, October 26, 2023.

Prosecution’s Account: According to the facts presented by the Attorney-General in the charge sheet, in 2009, during the State of the Nation Address, the then President, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, announced plans to purchase new ambulances to expand the operations of the National Ambulance Service.

Jakpa, a local representative of Big Sea General Trading Ltd, a Dubai-based company, approached the Ministry of Health with a proposal in which he claimed to have secured financing from Stanbic Bank for the supply of 200 ambulances to the government. Parliament granted approval for the financing agreement between the government and Stanbic Bank.

According to the facts, on November 19, 2012, Dr. Anemana sent a letter to the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) seeking approval to engage Big Sea through single sourcing for the supply of 200 ambulances.

Furthermore, on August 7, 2014, Dr. Forson wrote to the Bank of Ghana requesting Letters of Credit amounting to €3.95 million for the supply of 50 ambulances in favor of Big Sea. These Letters of Credit were subsequently released to Big Sea.

“Are Ashantis more human than Ewes” comment not from me – Mahama rebuffs claims

Former President John Dramani Mahama has denied uttering ethnocentric statements targeting the people of the Ashanti Region in light of the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Recent reports circulating on social media suggests that Mahama implied that President Akufo-Addo would have responded differently to the flooding caused by the spillage had it occurred in the Ashanti Region.

The attributed quotes questioned whether Ewes were considered less valuable than Asantes.

In response to these allegations, Mahama has accused the presidency of deliberately spreading what he has labeled “disinformation” with the intent of creating negative sentiment toward him.

In a post dated October 17, 2023, he refuted the claims and declared, “This is false, and they are aware of it! Kindly disregard such acts of disinformation from the Office of the President of Ghana.”

Furthermore, Mahama called upon the general public to dismiss the purported false claims attributed to him.

This development comes on the heels of criticisms directed at President Akufo-Addo after his remarks on Monday, October 16, during his visit to Mepe, one of the areas severely affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage in the Volta Region.

During his address to local chiefs and residents, he acknowledged that they had not supported his political party but emphasized his presence as the President of the nation.

“When these things happen and government acts, politics does not come into the matter at all. Some people say it was a lighthearted comment gone wrong while others say it was simply a reckless one,” he added.

Meanwhile, the former President has urged the government to announce a state of emergency in regions impacted by the Akosombo dam overflow.

Through a recent Facebook post, the NDC Flagbearer stated,“it is clear that the scope and scale of the flooding of communities along the Volta River is bigger than our crippled economy can bear.

He further advised, “I recommend to Government to declare a State of Emergency in the affected areas and request relief assistance from our bilateral and multilateral partners immediately.”

  • Ghana’s maiden lithium project to include enhanced royalties

Ghana’s maiden lithium project to include enhanced royalties

The government has granted a subsidiary of Atlantic Lithium Limited, Barari DV Ghana Limited, a 15-year mining lease to initiate the construction and mining of lithium in the Mfantseman Municipality of the Central Region, Ewoyaa.

This lease incorporates revised terms with the aim of maximizing the country’s benefits from lithium mining.

The changes include an increased royalty rate, greater participation by the state and Ghanaian stakeholders, and a focus on adding value to the extracted mineral.

The decision to grant this mining lease comes after the completion of prospecting and feasibility studies by the company, following a series of negotiations with the government.

The lease covers an area of approximately 42.63 square kilometers, granting the company exclusive rights to extract and produce lithium and associated minerals in accordance with the country’s mining regulations.

Lithium is a crucial mineral used in the production of lithium-ion batteries, which are being promoted as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels to combat climate change. The burning of fossil fuels in internal combustion engines is a major contributor to the climate crisis.

In response, global leaders are advocating for a transition to green energy to reduce and ultimately eliminate carbon emissions.

Some countries have already passed laws to phase out fossil fuel-powered vehicles, creating a growing market for the battery industry and the minerals required for battery production, often referred to as green or critical minerals.

Despite having high-grade lithium deposits, the country has yet to commence mining this mineral. To address this, the government has established a special policy for the exploitation and management of green minerals, including lithium, before granting any mining leases.

The new lease incorporates terms different from the standard mining lease, with an increased royalty rate of 10 percent (up from 5 percent) and an increase in the state’s free carried interest from 10 percent to 13 percent.

The government, through the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), will acquire an additional 6 percent in the mining operation and a 3.06 percent stake in the company’s parent entity, which is listed on the Australian and London Stock Exchanges.

The company is also required to list on the Ghana Stock Exchange, allowing Ghanaian entities like pension funds and individuals to participate in the business.

Additionally, the company will contribute 1 percent of its revenue to a Community Development Fund, benefiting communities affected by their operations.

The company will work on establishing a chemical plant for lithium processing, and if it is unable to do so, it will supply its lithium to third-party chemical plants in the country, leading to job creation and development in mining communities.

The government is committed to ensuring that mining communities and Ghanaians, who are the legal owners of these minerals, benefit from this industry. The company is urged to adhere to the country’s mining laws and the terms of the agreement, focusing on responsible, sustainable, and environmentally sound mining practices.

The Executive Chairman of Atlantic Lithium Limited, Niel Herbert, expressed gratitude to the government for their cooperation in reaching this significant milestone, emphasizing the importance of the Ewoyaa project and the company’s commitment to complying with Ghana’s laws and ensuring a safe mining environment.

  • Water supply system at Aveyime restored

Water supply system at Aveyime restored

In line with its Emergency Preparedness Plan launched in May 2023 to assist communities affected by the regulated release of water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams, the Volta River Authority (VRA) has effectively reinstated the water supply infrastructure in Aveyime, located in the North Tongu District.

The flooded township’s raw water intake pumps at Aveyime were relocated to higher ground, accompanied by the construction of a pump protection shed with power panels integrated into the water treatment system.

The team put in continuous effort by digging trenches and installing pipes to ensure an immediate supply of safe drinking water to the community.

The Deputy Chief Executive (Services), Ken Arthur, is scheduled to hand over the newly commissioned water system to the people of Aveyime on October 19, 2023, thereby ensuring access to clean potable water for essential needs such as drinking, cooking, and bathing.

VRA is dedicated to offering substantial relief to the affected communities, striving to improve the lives of flood victims. This water supply restoration is the initial step towards a series of similar efforts, with plans to extend access to clean water to every resident in the affected areas.

In regions where water supply is temporarily cut off, VRA dispatches daily shipments of clean potable water to these communities. Furthermore, thousands of sachet water bags are provided for drinking. This focus on quick and clean water supply aims to prevent waterborne diseases from spreading in these communities and ensures that a fundamental human need is met.

While VRA continues to distribute essential relief items such as medicine supplies, canned food, toiletries, drugs, mattresses, buckets, rice, sugar, mosquito nets, and more to the flood victims, the organization is extending its technical expertise to offer assistance to the impacted communities. VRA, as a company of engineers, is committed to delivering more than just relief items and medications to the flood victims. They aim to proactively provide technical solutions and support to these communities.

VRA is resolutely fulfilling its promise to leave no one behind, standing by the communities in their time of need and delivering on their commitment to provide relief to the flood victims.

  • Akosombo Dam reports stable water levels with no increase in 24 hours

Akosombo Dam reports stable water levels with no increase in 24 hours

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has provided an update, confirming that the water level at the Akosombo Dam has remained stable over the last 24 hours, despite previous concerns about rising water levels.

The Deputy Chief Executive of the VRA, Edward Obeng Kenzo, shared this information while speaking to the media on Thursday, October 19, 2023.

“We are currently below the 277.50 feet level. Today, there has been no rise, meaning that the inflow and the amount we are spilling are in equilibrium. As of this morning, the water level is approximately 277.36,” he stated.

Earlier this week, Mr. Kenzo had expressed concerns about the continuous increase in the dam’s water level.

He explained that they had been forced to release water from the dam to prevent it from overtopping its operational level of 277.5 feet, as saving water beyond this threshold was not an option.

He emphasized that while there were no immediate plans for further water spillage, any additional heavy rains into the dam could necessitate such action. Currently, the water level stands at approximately 277.26 feet behind the dam.

The dam’s operational level is 276, with the maximum allowable operational level being 277.5 feet.

Mr. Kenzo stressed the critical need to prevent the dam from exceeding its operational capacity, as doing so could result in the dam’s failure and catastrophic consequences, including the loss of lives and property along the banks of the Volta River.

The VRA initiated controlled water spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams on September 15, 2023, due to a consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir.

This has resulted in the inundation of numerous homes in regions including South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, and other affected areas.

Akosombo Dam spillage: I will ensure victims are compensated – Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu in the Volta Region, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has affirmed his dedication to securing complete resettlement and compensation for all those affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage from the Volta River Authority (VRA).

In an interview with the media, Mr Ablakwa urged the VRA to outline its plans for resolving the situation and providing assistance to the affected victims.

“VRA should be telling us what their plans are for resettlement and what their plans are for full compensation. I am going to insist that there is resettlement and there is full compensation. That is why when the house resumes, I’ll be making a statement, I will be demanding a parliamentary inquiry. These VRA officials must be summoned,” he said.

Mr Ablakwa emphasized that the residents affected by the flood had made significant sacrifices by donating their lands for the construction of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.

He pointed out that these sacrifices had contributed to the development of the country and deserved recognition and justice.

“This should not be the price we pay for donating our lands for the Akosombo dam to be built; for the Kpong dam to be built. Because of the sacrifices that my people made, we all have electricity, we’re all getting industrialized, and getting transformed. And this should not be how we should be treated after making this enormous sacrifice, this is not the price we must pay. All we need is respect; all we need is our human rights to be valued. This is a matter of justice, they deserve justice and I’ll make sure that they receive justice, he said.

  • 4 private laboratories in Accra closed for failing to meet standards

4 private laboratories in Accra closed for failing to meet standards

The Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC) in Accra has taken action to close down four private laboratories, citing their employment of unlicensed staff and their use of inadequate equipment.

The laboratories affected by this measure include Acumed Diagnostic Service, Samsandy Health Centre, Chalton Medical Centre, and Occuhealth Health Centre.

Deputy Director of Public Relations at AHPC, Mr. Kweku Asenso Brobbey, provided the details during an interview with the media.

He explained that the closures were a direct result of an inspection and enforcement exercise carried out by the Council at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).

Mr. Brobbey clarified that the laboratories were shuttered after it was discovered that they were not in compliance with the provisions of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act.

The Council’s main objective is to inspect allied health facilities to ensure that they adhere to the highest standards of practice in the country.

The inspection and enforcement exercise commenced on October 9 this year and is set to continue until the end of the year.

Its primary aim is to identify and apprehend unqualified individuals practicing as professionals without the necessary licenses, as well as facilities that fail to meet AHPC standards.

Mr. Brobbey emphasized that the Council’s responsibility is to eliminate unqualified practitioners from the allied health sector within the health delivery system to ensure the delivery of high-quality healthcare.

Despite the closures, Mr. Brobbey noted that most facilities, especially those operating in hospitals to provide allied health services, were in good standing with the Council.

However, he added that there were a few exceptions that the Council was committed to addressing, as stipulated in the allied health professional regulations.

Regarding the presence of unqualified and unlicensed personnel and the use of inadequate equipment in the healthcare system, the Director of Medical Affairs at KBTH, Dr. Frank Owusu-Sekyere, commended AHPC for their efforts.

He emphasized that such practices pose a significant risk to the effective delivery of healthcare services in the country and called for support from all stakeholders.

Thus far, the Council has inspected eight hospitals, 10 private laboratories, and one clinic, including KBTH, Pentecost Hospital in Madina, Ga East Hospital, University of Ghana Medical Centre, Cocoa Clinic, Adabraka Hospital, Abodwe Clinic, and Holy Trinity Hospital.

  • Poverty on the rise in Ghana – World Bank Country Director

Poverty on the rise in Ghana – World Bank Country Director

The World Bank’s Country Director, Pierre Laporte, has revealed the significant impact of soaring inflation in 2022 on the overall living standards, particularly among the most vulnerable members of society.

He pointed out that the number of Ghanaians living in extreme poverty has increased since the previous year, with more than a quarter of the population now surviving on less than GH¢24 per day, equivalent to less than two dollars.

The recent surge in inflation in Ghana has severely eroded the purchasing power of affected households, mainly because their incomes have not kept pace with the rising cost of living.

“It is expected that the current economic woes the country has endured may have pushed many more Ghanaians into poverty, and food insecurity worsened by the last quarter of 2022 when inflation was at its peak,” Mr Laporte said on October 18 at a ceremony to mark End Poverty Day at the World Bank Office in Accra.

Mr. Laporte conveyed these concerns on October 18 during an event marking End Poverty Day at the World Bank Office in Accra. The event was held under the theme “Delivering growth to people through better jobs in Ghana.”

Looking ahead, when considering the path to recovery, he emphasized the need for structural reforms to strengthen long-term growth prospects and economic stability.

He suggested that policies supporting investment and human capital development, along with efforts to enhance resilience and crisis preparedness, particularly in the fields of agriculture and food systems, were crucial to bolstering long-term growth prospects.

Mr. Laporte noted that well-targeted investments could create better jobs, reduce income inequality, and enhance productivity. He underscored that employment and job opportunities were the most effective means to alleviate poverty and inequality. Furthermore, empowering women, girls, and young people could amplify the positive impact on communities and across generations.

The World Bank, he explained, is adapting its vision and mission in response to a series of global crises that have disrupted development progress.

The institution is working on a new playbook that focuses on improving and modernizing financing capabilities, delivery models, and efficiency, among other aspects, with the goal of promoting inclusive development that doesn’t come at the expense of vulnerable populations, ultimately leading to an improved quality of life and more job opportunities for people around the world.
