142 women succumb to cervical cancer monthly – Doctor

A Medical Officer at the Oncology Unit of the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH), Dr. Anita Owusu-Afriyie, has revealed that 233 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer each month, and tragically, 142 of them succumb to the disease monthly.

The data highlights that 58 women receive a cervical cancer diagnosis on a weekly basis, with 35 losing their lives every week. Moreover, a disturbing 2,797 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer annually in Ghana, and a heartbreaking 1,699 lose their lives to the disease.

Cervical cancer ranks as the second most prevalent cancer among women in Ghana, following breast cancer.

Dr. Owusu-Afriyie shared these statistics during the “Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility!” health promotion initiative organized by the Ghana News Agency Tema Regional Office.

The initiative aims to disseminate health information to enhance health literacy and influence personal health choices.

She emphasized the importance of regular cervical cancer screening, as early detection can be a lifesaver. Dr. Owusu-Afriyie urged men to support and encourage their partners, wives, sisters, mothers, and friends to undergo screening.

Prolonged infection with specific strains of Human papillomavirus (HPV) is identified as the primary cause of cervical cancer. HPV is a common virus transmitted through sexual contact, and although many sexually active individuals contract HPV at some point, only a small percentage of women develop cervical cancer.

Dr. Owusu-Afriyie advised women not to undergo cervical cancer screening during menstruation, as menstrual blood can affect the accuracy of the analysis.

She also encouraged women who experience abnormal bleeding after sexual intercourse or menstruation to seek medical attention.

Furthermore, individuals undergoing treatment for cervical cancer should abstain from sexual intercourse or engage in protected sex, as the treatment is aimed at eliminating cancer cells from the cervix.

Dr. Owusu-Afriyie called on all females aged 21 and older to undergo cervical cancer screening.

Francis Ameyibor, the GNA Tema Regional Manager, explained that the office aimed to leverage the agency’s communication expertise and the skills of health professionals to educate the public on the importance of overall health.

He also mentioned that the weekly health dialogue platform would serve as an effective channel for health professionals to educate the public on healthy practices and general health issues.

  • Health Accountants to protest nationwide

    Health Accountants to protest nationwide

The Health Accounting Staff Association of Ghana has issued a notice of an impending strike in response to a decision made by the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).

They explained that on the 20th of September 2023, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KBTH delivered release letters dated 19th of September 2023, to five (5) accountants of the hospital, directing them to report to the Health Ministry for reassignment, effective from the 26th of September, 2023.

In a statement they released, they expressed their deep disappointment, noting that all the affected Accountants serve as leaders of the local branch of the HASAG Union within the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

“To our utmost dismay, all the affected Accountants are leaders of the local branch of HASAG Union in the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital made up of four branch Council members and one executive member of the union who is the Korle-bu branch Vice president of the Association.

“From all indications, they are being taken out of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital permanently to be reassigned under the Ministry of Health and never to return to the hospital,” a statement they issued said.

This local branch is comprised of four branch Council members and one executive member, who happens to be the Korle-bu branch Vice President of the Association.

According to them, the decision to permanently transfer these union leaders out of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, under the Ministry of Health, effectively prevents them from advocating for the rights of their members.

This action, they argue, is not in line with the public service provisions and the framework for negotiating conditions of service for the Ghana public sector health workforce.

They also cited the framework for negotiating conditions of service for Ghana’s public sector health workforce, specifically section 3.1.i-iii, which emphasizes that postings should not be used as a punitive measure and should be done with due notice.

It further mentions that postings exceeding two years should come with adequate notice and planning.

The union leaders believe that these releases are an attempt to victimize and intimidate them, particularly due to their involvement in an ongoing court case regarding the appointment of a substantive director of finance. They contend that these releases are unjustified, especially when the case is already before the court.

Consequently, they call upon the President of Ghana, Akufo-Addo, to intervene and direct the Health Minister, the Board Chairman of KBTH, and the CEO of KBTH to act in the interest of industrial peace and harmony.

Finally, they announce that if the release letters given to their union leaders at Korle-bu Teaching Hospital are not withdrawn within seven (7) working days from the date of their letter, the union will proceed with a nationwide strike to demand the withdrawal of these letters.

Scheduled to kick off from 6 am to 10 am on Saturday, October 21st, this cleanup initiative also serves as a preparatory measure for the final funeral rites of the late Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru III.

In accordance with the statement from the AMA, signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the designated focus areas for this exercise include:

    7. Princess Marie Louise Children’s Hospital on Derby Avenue in the Ashiedu Keteke Sub-Metro.

The statement mandates the suspension of all business and economic activities during the specified period and encourages residents, corporations, traders, and shop owners to coordinate similar cleanup efforts in their respective communities, adhering to the AMA Sanitation, Cleaning, and Communal Labour Bye-laws of 2017.

These regulations will be rigorously enforced by Environmental Health Officers (Saman Saman).

Furthermore, the AMA announced that, in compliance with the Ga Traditional Council’s amended directive, which calls for the closure of all shops and markets on Saturday, October 28th, 2023, in honor of the late Queen Mother of the Ga State, Naa Dedei Omaedru III, Public Health Officers will conduct a deratting exercise at the 31st Makola, Makola Nos. 2, Agbogbloshie, and London Markets.

The catastrophic flooding caused by the Akosombo Dam spill has rendered an estimated 30,000 people homeless, thrusting them into dire circumstances.

He further explained, “the water has become contaminated with local refuse and sewage, posing a risk of people ending up in hospitals if caution is not exercised. Therefore, we are donating infusions, normal saline solutions, cholera replacement fluids, and antibiotics that hospitals can utilize.”

  • Anti-snake serum to be produced in Ghana

Anti-snake serum to be produced in Ghana

Ghana is on the path to manufacturing anti-snake venom, a life-saving serum crucial for individuals bitten by snakes, aiming to mitigate fatalities resulting from the unavailability of this vital antidote.

This development came to light during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Atlantic Lifesciences, a Ghanaian company, and Vins Bioproducts Limited, an Indian firm, marking the initiation of the fill and finish production of anti-snake venom within Ghana.

The anti-snake venom formulation will possess the capability to counteract the effects of over 19 different snake species’ bites. This undertaking aligns with the government’s aspiration to establish Ghana as a central hub for vaccine production within the African sub-region.

During the event held in Accra, Dhananjay Tripathi, CEO of Atlantic Lifesciences, emphasized that Ghana would become the pioneering West African nation to manufacture and package anti-snake venom for both local use and export.

Siddarth Daga, Executive Director of Vins Bioproducts Limited, expressed his contentment at partnering with Atlantic Lifesciences to produce anti-snake venom in Ghana.

Delese Mimi Darko, CEO of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), disclosed that the FDA had granted approval for the production of anti-snake venom.

“Anti-venoms are critical vaccine commodities which are often out of stock in Ghana and other regions, leading to unavoidable deaths. There are several initiatives globally and nationally underway to increase access to anti-venoms, both here and in the rest of the world. This MoU will mark the beginning of several such agreements between local manufacturers and giant pharmaceutical industries to help support manufacturers towards self-sustainability and supply in Ghana and to export to many countries. Everything we test in our laboratory is worldwide,” she stated.

Vins Bioproducts Limited is a prominent producer of vaccines.

Akosombo Dam spillage: Akufo-Addo has no plans to declare state of emergency

The President and Chief Executive Officer of the Institute for Security, Disaster, and Emergency Studies, Dr. Ishmael Norman, has expressed his belief that there is a slim chance that President Akufo-Addo will declare a state of emergency in response to the flood disaster caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

While Dr. Norman supports the idea of the President declaring a state of emergency, he points out that President Akufo-Addo’s past actions do not indicate a likelihood of taking such a step, even on a regional level.

During an interview with the media, Dr. Norman explained that President Akufo-Addo did not employ the Emergency Powers Act of 1994 (Act 471) or Article 31 of the 1992 Constitution, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Norman elaborated, saying, “the reason why he wouldn’t declare a state of emergency, not even a regional state of emergency, is because it entails a lot. You remember that he used Executive Instrument 61 when it started and then 10 (12) of 2020 to declare a health emergency, not even a state of emergency but a health emergency, meaning other considerations were not important even though the COVID situation was a massive disruption to activities everywhere.”

“In this situation with spillage and flooding, he is not going to declare a state of emergency, not even a regional state of emergency. He will come out with an Executive Instrument that will allow him to perform without reporting to Parliament because the modalities for the state of emergency are very technical, and our President doesn’t like to control by the laws too much”.

Dr. Norman stressed that, if the government is genuinely committed to resolving the issue, the most prudent approach would be to declare a regional state of emergency, given the limited scope of the crisis.

He noted that the spillage and subsequent flooding had not yet reached a national scale, affecting perhaps 9 to 12 districts.

To declare a regional state of emergency, the President would need to report to Parliament and adhere to the specified procedures under Article 31.

  • Akosombo Dam spillage: Flood victims exhibiting Malaria, diarrhea, bilharzia symptoms – GMA

Akosombo Dam spillage: Flood victims exhibiting Malaria, diarrhea, bilharzia symptoms – GMA

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has made a concerning revelation about the conditions in emergency shelters established for individuals affected by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.

The Acting General Secretary of the GMA, Dr. Richard Selormey, shared this information while speaking to the media.

According to Dr. Selormey, the GMA dispatched a team to assist with rescue efforts in the affected areas and discovered that a significant number of people in the emergency shelters were exhibiting symptoms of diarrhea and bilharzia.

“We have noted that the most common diseases contracted by victims are malaria, skin diseases, and respiratory conditions because they are in close contact. We have also noticed that there are a few people beginning to show signs of diarrhea diseases and about two people are also showing signs of bilharzia,” he added.

Dr. Selormey also issued a warning about the potential for waterborne disease outbreaks and urged the affected individuals to adhere to safety protocols while awaiting relief supplies.

Meanwhile, in North and South Tongu in the Volta region, thousands of displaced persons have been forced to use contaminated water for some of their daily chores due to the circumstances arising from the dam spillage.

The calculated spillage of water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams began on 15th September 2023, in response to a consistent increase in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir.

The severe flooding, caused by the spillage from the dams, has forced numerous individuals in these areas to evacuate.

During his visit to the affected areas on Monday, 16th, October, President Akufo-Addo assured that the inter-ministerial committee established to address flood-related issues will not only determine immediate relief efforts for the victims, but also focus on preventing the occurrence of such disasters in the future.

In the meantime, the Volta River Authority (VRA) has warned that Tema and its surrounding areas may face significant risk should the water level of the Akosombo Dam exceed its operational capacity.

  • National Cathedral is waste of money, next president must abandon it – NPP’s Arthur K

National Cathedral is waste of money, next president must abandon it – NPP’s Arthur K

A prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Kobina Arthur Kennedy, has stated that the next President of Ghana, following Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, should exercise wisdom and abandon the National Cathedral project.

He believes that the project represents a misallocation of resources, and it would not be prudent to continue investing in what he views as a misguided endeavor.

Dr. Kennedy, a former NPP flagbearer aspirant, expressed his views during an appearance on TV3’s Ghana Tonight on Wednesday, October 18.

His comments come in the wake of the resignation of two board members, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Reverend Eastwood Anaba, who cited the lack of an audit of the project since their request in January as their reason for stepping down.

The National Cathedral Secretariat responded by clarifying that they had engaged the international accounting and auditing firm Deloitte to conduct the audit, and the two clergymen were aware of this.

“The attention of the Secretariat of the National Cathedral project has been drawn to a letter addressed to the President – sighted in the media before Board members received copies – of the resignation of two of the members of the Board, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan Williams  and Rev Eastwood Anaba,” the reply in a statement dated Wednesday, October 18 began.

“The reason given in the letter for their resignation is said to be the lack of any information, whatsoever, following their January 23, 2023 resolution calling for an audit of the National Cathedral project, and a complete cessation of work on the project,” the statement signed by Executive Director Dr Paul Opoku-Mensah further noted.

Dr. Arthur Kennedy’s position is that the project was flawed from the outset because President Akufo-Addo had misled the Ghanaian public.

He considers the current state of the project as emblematic of the government’s reckless management of entrusted resources and a lack of care for the welfare of the Ghanaian people.

The US-based medical practitioner, therefore, advises the next President, to be elected on December 7, 2024, to discontinue the National Cathedral project.

He argued that continuing to invest in it would be wasteful, as he asserts that the money already spent has been squandered.

“If the person is wise, he would abandon it because this is sand cost. That’s what my economist friends tell me and we should not throw good money after bad money.

“This money has been wasted and the more money we put in this, the more wastage we will get,” he added.

He suggests redirecting the estimated $400 million, which has been invested in the project thus far, towards improving tourism infrastructure, such as constructing major hotels in the Cape Coast area, upgrading the Cape Coast-Accra road, and rehabilitating historical sites like Asebu Kwamankese.

Dr. Kennedy believes that constructing a Bible museum in sub-Saharan Africa is unlikely to attract tourists who typically visit major cathedrals in Europe.

He emphasized the need for a thorough audit of the project, suspecting that the funds contributed by Ghanaians have been misappropriated and misused.

  • Why prioritize a National Cathedral when Ghana lacks dialysis machines? – Obiri Boahen to govt

Why prioritize a National Cathedral when Ghana lacks dialysis machines? – Obiri Boahen to govt

A former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, has voiced strong criticism of the government’s allocation of resources and priorities in Ghana.

During an interview interview with the media on October 18, 2023, Mr Boahen raised concerns about the construction of the National Cathedral, emphasizing that there are more urgent issues in the country that require immediate attention and resources.

He specifically highlighted the critical healthcare institutions, such as the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, which are in dire need of dialysis machines.

Mr Boahen explained that these facilities are essential for providing healthcare services to Ghanaians, and the absence of vital equipment like dialysis machines is a matter of serious concern.

Mr Boahen expressed his disapproval of the National Cathedral project, stating,”if you claim you will build a cathedral and all NPP people will be clapping, I will never clap for that project because it is not a number one priority. The amount of money that will be involved can be used to build the railway from Accra to Dormaa or Bawku, which is my topmost priority.

He added, “When you hear news like Komfo Anokye is lacking dialysis machine, Korle Bu is lacking dialysis machine and people are paying huge monies, how do you take that?

He went on to say, “When you hear news like Komfo Anokye is lacking dialysis machine, Korle Bu is lacking dialysis machine, and people are paying huge monies, how do you take that? If you live in a country that claims they are building a cathedral, but dialysis machines and incubators are lacking, and individuals are the ones providing such support for the hospitals, how do you talk about this?”

Dialysis is a crucial medical treatment for patients with kidney issues, as it helps remove excess fluids and waste from the bloodstream. Patients typically require three dialysis sessions per week to maintain a decent quality of life.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah, shared that there are approximately 700 to 1,000 people undergoing dialysis treatment in the country, with 350 of them being treated at the Dialysis Unit of the KBTH.

The unit conducts 2,000 dialysis sessions every month.Dr. Ampomah also urged the government to establish the necessary legal frameworks to facilitate kidney transplants as an alternative to prolonged dialysis treatment, which can be quite stressful.

He made these comments while receiving a GHS 100,000 donation from a team representing The Maker’s House Chapel International for the Dialysis Unit of the Hospital.

  • How an NPP chairman duped ‘poor’ Ghanaian GHS8K

How an NPP chairman duped ‘poor’ Ghanaian GHS8K

A member affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is allegedly implicated in a financial fraud case, purportedly deceiving a vulnerable Ghanaian and fraudulently obtaining a substantial amount of GHC8,000 from him.

The victim, who remains unidentified, shared his account with the media, detailing his encounter with Frank Cudjoe, also known as Cocoa Sika, the NPP chairman for Bia West.

This encounter reportedly transpired in 2022 when the victim, recovering from an illness contracted in Libya, relocated to Ghana.

The victim stated that upon his return, the company responsible for bringing him to Ghana encouraged him to initiate an independent business venture.

Driven by aspirations to establish a cement enterprise, he crossed paths with Cocoa Sika and engaged in transactions to acquire the necessary goods.

Regrettably, subsequent to making payments, the victim alleges that Cocoa Sika has evaded fulfilling the agreed-upon arrangements, responding with excuses and instructing the victim to apprehend an employee associated with him.

“I was in Libya, but I came back to Ghana because I wasn’t well. The company that brought me to Ghana treated me until I recovered. After my recovery, they said they would like me to work in Ghana and asked about the business I wanted to pursue. I expressed my interest in selling cement, and they instructed me to obtain an invoice and return to collect a cheque to start the business. The person provided me with a three-day deadline to pick up the items. However, since 2022, he has been evasive. His current demand is that I should arrest an employee working with him, or he won’t provide the cement. He alleges I should apprehend the employee for theft. The person in question is the NPP chairman in Bia West, known as Frank Cudjoe, also referred to as Cocoa Sika.

During a confrontation, the victim questioned this directive, only for Cocoa Sika to allege that the said employee had engaged in theft, despite no prior business interactions between them.

However, after making payments, the victim alleges that Cocoa Sika failed to honor the agreed-upon arrangements, offering excuses and advising the victim to apprehend one of his employees.

In response, the victim questioned this directive during a confrontation, prompting Cocoa Sika to assert that the said employee had engaged in theft, despite no prior business interactions between the victim and the employee.

Frustrated by the lack of progress in resolving the matter, the victim sought assistance from third parties, including the district woman organizer, where Cocoa Sika stipulated a deadline to provide the promised goods.

“I reported the issue to the district woman organizer, who spoke to him. He assured her that he would provide the goods soon. However, after the deadline passed, I made several attempts to contact him, but he was unresponsive. I sent him a voice note to express my dissatisfaction, and he informed me that due to my voice note, he would no longer supply the goods. I informed my company about the situation, and they tried to contact him, but without success,” he added.

The deadline passed without delivery, prompting the victim to convey his displeasure via a voice note.

In response, Cocoa Sika defiantly asserted that no one could take any action against him.

The victim stated that he has reported the case to the police, but Cocoa Sika has shifted the blame onto his employee, maintaining that the employee, and not he, should be held responsible.

“I reported the matter to a police commander, and he was summoned to the police station. Nevertheless, he insisted that the police should arrest his employee. The police instructed me to go and arrest the employee working with him, and he has asserted that no one can take any action against him,” he added.

  • It’s better to sell Ghana to Elon Musk than to allow the NPP a third term – Amorse Blessing

It’s better to sell Ghana to Elon Musk than to allow the NPP a third term – Amorse Blessing

The Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Amorse Blessing Amos, has suggested that selling Ghana to business tycoon, Elon Musk will be a prudent course of action than re-electing the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Amos argued that it is imperative to vote the NPP out of power due to their failure in improving the nation’s conditions.

He referred to a recent open letter, wherein it was asserted that the eight years of NPP governance had caused significant harm to the nation. The letter contended that a complete recovery would demand a span of 30 years.

“In his extensive commentary, Frimpong-Boateng has conveyed the opinions of experienced economists he has engaged with. According to them, the damage inflicted upon our economy by the NPP is so significant that it may require approximately 30 years to fully rectify.”

“You took only eight years to cause 30 years’ destruction, and you are still asking for breaking the eight, then it is better we sell Ghana to Google and Elon Musk. They have money to buy the whole of Ghana, so that we will know that we have been enslaved. And with the help of God, it will not happen,” he added.

He stressed that it is evident to any rational observer in Ghana that the populace is enduring significant hardships, also the NPP administration has acknowledged its inability to alleviate the country’s economic struggles.

“In fact, no sane person in Ghana today will say that Ghanaians are not suffering. In fact, the president himself said that Ghanaians are suffering, and he is hoping whoever will take over will eliminate us from the economic hardship.

“This means that, for him, he has admitted that whatever he can do, he has done it and he couldn’t see any better results,” he said.

Mr. Amos expressed hope that a change in leadership would bring relief from these economic challenges.

The state of the Ghanaian economy has garnered significant attention in recent months due to a downturn marked by soaring inflation, a devaluing currency, and an overall deterioration in the quality of life, exacerbated by a high cost of living.

The government has consistently attributed this economic decline to the repercussions of both the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

As a response to these challenges, the government sought a US$3 billion loan from the IMF last year.

Duncan-Williams, Eastwood Anaba lied, they have been provided with an audit report – National Cathedral Executive Director

The Executive Director of the National Cathedral Project, Dr. Paul Opoku-Mensah, has responded to the resignations of Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Rev. Eastwood Anaba from the Board of Trustees overseeing the Cathedral’s construction.

In their resignation letter on October 17, 2023, the clergymen mentioned their exist was due to the Board’s reluctance to conduct an audit of the project.

They also stated they hadn’t received updates since their initial call for an audit in January 2023.

However, Dr. Opoku-Mensah, in a press statement on the same day, clarified that an ongoing audit was indeed being conducted by Deloitte.

He explained that several meetings had taken place after the call for an audit, and all necessary information had been shared with the respected clergymen, refuting their claims.

Dr. Opoku-Mensah further detailed the progress of the audit, mentioning that the engagement letter with Deloitte was signed on March 27, 2023, and the audit was set up on their system by May 17, 2023. He confirmed that the first part of the audit was expected to be completed by July 2023.

He also pointed out that despite Archbishop Duncan-Williams and Rev. Eastwood Anaba not being physically present at some meetings, they were provided with copies of all documents, including the Executive Director’s report, related to the audit process.

Hence, the claim of receiving no information about the audit was deemed false.

“Following this, the engagement letter for Deloitte to officially begin the audit was drafted and signed by Deloitte on March 27, 2023, and set up on their system on May 17, 2023. The expectation was that the first part of the audit was to be completed in July 2023. The audit process, so far, can be confirmed with the auditors, Deloitte.”

“Although Archbishop Duncan Williams and Rev. Eastwood Anaba were not present at both the June 2023 and September 2023 meetings, they and all the other Board members who were not physically present at the meeting were sent copies of all the documents for the Board meeting, including the Executive Director’s report. The claim that they have received no information, whatsoever, on the audit process is therefore false,” he added.

  • Bugri Naabu, Dampare plotted to entrap us – COP Alex Mensah

Retired Commissioner of the Ghana Police Service, COP George Alex Mensah, has reiterated his allegation that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, was directly involved in a plot to secretly record him and other senior police officers.

COP Mensah claims that Bugri Naabu, the former Northern Regional chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), who has admitted to recording his meeting with them, collaborated with Dr. Dampare in recording the conversation.

He expressed this view during an interview with Evans Mensah on Joynews, emphasizing that there was an objective behind the recording. COP Mensah also suggested that the actual recording could be obtained by contacting the IGP, as he believed Dr. Dampare was aware of the situation and was involved in setting it up.

“Of course there is an objective and that is why I told the committee that if they want the real, actual recording they should call the IGP. I said it at the committee because he knew something about it. He and Bugri Naabu set it up,” he stated.

The audio recording in question has sparked a seven-member parliamentary committee investigation. In the recording, COP Mensah and two other police officers are heard discussing political support to remove the IGP and promoting COP Mensah as the ideal replacement. They described him as a true supporter and member of the ruling New Patriotic Party who could help the party maintain power in 2024. Additionally, they questioned the competence of Dr. Dampare and accused him of being an ally of the opposition National Democratic Congress.

Bugri Naabu, who recorded the tape, testified before the parliamentary committee, stating that he presented it as evidence to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

COP Mensah’s claim is that the IGP was the actual instigator of the recorded conversation, setting them up in collaboration with someone else.

“He and somebody plotted and put that recording machine there and called us; called us and invited us to come because he knew he has plotted that thing there… yes, he set it up. He set us up, that is what he did.

“I don’t know [his intention] he must say it. He did it in connivance with somebody,” he stated.

Buildings near Densu River to be demolished by GWCL

The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has identified several buildings near the Densu River, which supplies the Weija Dam, for demolition to safeguard the water source.

These structures, located in the Weija-Gbawe municipality of the Greater Accra region, have been marked for removal.

The Weija Dam plays a critical role in providing clean drinking water to numerous households in the capital, and the GWCL aims to protect it from encroachment through this demolition initiative.

However, residents facing potential property loss during these challenging economic times have expressed distress, appealing to the government to intervene. Many have invested their savings and resources into these properties.

Residents like Naana Ofori and Mavis Boateng are deeply worried about losing their homes and the financial investments tied to them. They call attention to the emotional toll and financial strain this poses for affected families.

“My husband has been crying since our building was marked for demolition. He invested all his savings in the construction of the property and the thought of losing it is giving him sleepless nights,” a resident, Naana Ofori lamented.

“I don’t know where I would take my family to. I have invested a lot in the project and so we haven’t slept ever since they pasted the notice on the property,” she added.

Semey Philip Edem emphasizes the already challenging economic conditions in the country and expresses concern for how residents will cope with the demolition exercise, especially those who acquired loans or used their pensions to build their houses.

While the Ghana Water Company Limited has yet to provide a comment on the matter, sources within the company indicate that a statement will be released soon. The company is primarily concerned about land encroachment and human activities near the Densu River.

Wontumi doesn’t have what it takes to be a regional chairman – Ken’s campaign manager

The campaign manager for Kennedy Agyapong, a New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Kwame Owusu, has expressed his determination to work towards the removal of the current Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, in the upcoming elections.

Speaking to the media, Mr Owusu expressed the view that Chairman Wontumi’s behavior indicates he is not fit to lead the NPP in the region.

During an interview on Akoma FM on October 16, 2023, Kwame Owusu stated that Chairman Wontumi’s conduct suggests that he is not suited to lead the NPP in the region.

He accused the Ashanti Regional chairman of displaying bias in a role that requires ensuring fair treatment for all.

“We don’t want somebody who is biased… we are going to ensure that someone like Wontumi (is removed).

“We will campaign against him (Wontumi) because I don’t want a biased person in a position that requires fairness. How can we allow that to happen? We are saying that he (Wontumi) has not demonstrated what it takes to be a chairman of a region,” he said in Twi.

“I’m saying this from the standpoint of his behaviour. I’m not talking about any animosity between us. But if someone is a chairman in our party, he must act as one, he must remain neutral,” he clarified.

He additionally stated that apart from the NPP Ashanti Regional chairman, they would also campaign for the removal of other party leaders who have exhibited similar behavior from their positions.

Special Committee assigned to investigate Odododiodio Parliamentary Primary disruptions

The Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has forwarded the recent attack at its Greater Accra Region office, where certain parliamentary aspirants were undergoing vetting, to a designated special committee for thorough investigation.

The primary responsibility of this committee is to provide suitable recommendations.

In an announcement by the General Secretary of the party, Fifi Kwetey, on Tuesday, October 17, it was stated,

“At its regular meeting on Tuesday, 17th October, 2023, the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the NDC discussed the unfortunate incident that occurred at its Greater Accra Regional Office during the vetting of aspirants for the Odododiodio Constituency parliamentary primary of the party.

Following extensive discussions, FEC has referred both the violent occurrence and an ongoing appeal process concerning the eligibility of one of the aspirants to a Special Committee for a thorough investigation, with a subsequent delivery of appropriate recommendations.

    The Special Committee comprises of;

    1. Rt. Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho- Former Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana
    2. Dr. Samuel Sarpong- National Vice Chairman, NDC
    3. Mr. George Loh- Deputy, Director Legal, NDC
    4. Obuobia Darko-Opoku- Deputy Director of Communications, NDC
    5. Hon. Peter Lanchene Toobu- MP for Wa West Constituency

“In the meantime, all processes relative to the party’s parliamentary primary in the Odododiodio Constituency have been put on hold pending the outcome of investigations by the Special Committee,” the statement said.

The attack resulted in the physical assault of Citi FM/TV journalist Akosua Otchere.

The party expressed strong disapproval of the occurrence and offered a sincere apology to the journalist and her media outlet.

“The NDC regrets and condemns the attack on Akosua Otchere in no uncertain terms,” an earlier statement issued by National Communication Officer Sammy Gyamfi on Saturday, October 14 said.

“The conduct of the people who attacked the journalist is highly irresponsible and does not reflect our identity as defenders of press freedom and a party that fosters a cordial working relationship with the media.”

Akan and Bono have the same origin – Historian

Historian and legal expert Yaw Anokye Frimpong has provided insights into the origins of the illustrious Ashanti Kingdom.

In an interview with the media on October 17, 2023, Anokye Frimpong explained that the Ashanti Kingdom has its roots in the Bono tribe.

According to him, a coalition of clans within the Bono tribe joined forces to defend themselves against attacks from other clans, culminating in the formation of the Ashanti Kingdom.

“Ashanti is simply one of the many Akan states that originated from the Bono area. All Akans are Bono people to start with, and among the Bono are those who broke away and went to unite because of war,” he explained.

“Asante means ‘those who united because of war’. Ashantis is an anglicisation of Asante, which means because of war,” he said.

Anokye Frimpong clarified that the Ashanti people did not break away with the ambition of conquering other territories but rather to secure their independence.

He pointed out that the Dormaa people, now residing in the Bono Region, used to live in close proximity to the Ashanti and were also engaged in hostilities with them.

“When the Ashanti people settled in the Amansiaa area – today between Esumaja and Bekwai – they were living among the Adansi people and the Denkyira people. And we learn from history that the Dankyiras actually conquered all of them.

“And we learn from history that at any point in time, the Dankyirahene was asking them for their favourite wife and gold… the Dormaa people were as attacking them… So, the Ashantis (the Amansia people) felt they had to come together because of the many wars against them,” he said.

Akosombo Dam spillage: State of emergency needed in Osudoku, Anlo, others – Mahama to govt

Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged the government to announce a state of emergency in regions impacted by the Akosombo dam overflow.

Through a recent Facebook post, the NDC Flagbearer stated,“it is clear that the scope and scale of the flooding of communities along the Volta River is bigger than our crippled economy can bear.

He further advised, “I recommend to Government to declare a State of Emergency in the affected areas and request relief assistance from our bilateral and multilateral partners immediately.”

Given the ongoing efforts of a combined rescue team, including the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Ghana Armed Forces, and various relief agencies, to aid those stranded and affected by the rising floodwaters resulting from the dam spillage since September 15, 2023, there is a growing consensus for a state of emergency to be declared.

On Tuesday, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) supported the call for President Akufo-Addo to declare a state of emergency, while efforts are underway to provide relief to those affected by the Akosombo and Kpong Dams’ overflow.

Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has also joined the chorus, urging the government to proclaim a state of emergency to direct vital attention towards the affected residents of the Akosombo Dam spillage.

As of now, over 20,000 individuals have been displaced due to the dam overflow, which began last month.

  • Legislative proposal to prolong maternity leave to 4 months laid before Parliament

Legislative proposal to prolong maternity leave to 4 months laid before Parliament

Member of Parliament (MP) representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Francis-Xavier Sosu, has put forth a private member’s bill in the Ghanaian Parliament aimed at amending the Labor Act of 2003 (Act 651).

This proposed amendment, titled the Labor (Amendment) Bill of 2023, has several key objectives:

    1. Extension of Maternity Leave: The bill seeks to prolong maternity leave from the current three months to four months.
    2. Special Maternity Leave Provisions: Furthermore, it proposes an additional two weeks of maternity leave for women who undergo a caesarean section (CS), experience stillbirth(s), or give birth to multiple babies.
    3. Introduction of Paid Paternity Leave: The bill introduces paid paternity leave for men, advocating for a minimum of seven days and a maximum of four weeks. In cases of caesarean sections, stillbirth(s), or the birth of multiple children by a spouse, an extra two weeks of paternity leave is recommended.

This legislative proposal is designed to provide new mothers with more time for childbirth, exclusive breastfeeding, newborn care, bonding with their babies, and postpartum recovery before they rejoin the workforce.

It also aims to facilitate men in supporting their spouses and participating in domestic responsibilities during this critical period.

This legislative proposal, named “parental leave for all,” is specifically crafted to provide new mothers with an extended period for childbirth, exclusive breastfeeding, newborn care, bonding, and postpartum recovery before they rejoin the workforce. Simultaneously, it aims to empower men to support their spouses and share domestic responsibilities during this vital phase.

Mr. Sosu, the bill’s sponsor and MP representing Madina, underscores the critical significance of extending maternity leave to promote exclusive breastfeeding and maternal recuperation. He highlights the concerning maternal mortality rate in Ghana and how enhancing maternity leave can substantially contribute to improving the well-being of women.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr. Sosu elucidates that the bill addresses the lack of specific provisions in Ghana’s labor laws to assist women dealing with pregnancy or the loss of a child.

He emphasized the necessity for compassionate support during these vulnerable moments and discusses the ongoing debate regarding a woman’s entitlement to maternity leave in cases of stillbirth or baby loss.

Mr. Sosu also emphasizes the World Health Organization’s (WHO) recommendation to extend maternity leave to six months, facilitating exclusive breastfeeding, an idea endorsed by the Ghana Medical Association.

He underscored the vital role of maternity leave in affording new mothers the time required to give birth, recover, care for their infants, and build a strong bond with them.

The bill also addresses the circumstances of women who, regrettably, experience the loss of their babies during pregnancy or childbirth, a situation where existing legislation does not provide guidance.

This has spurred discussions about the fundamental purpose of maternity leave, prompting questions about whether it is exclusively tied to the presence of a living baby or encompasses the broader spectrum of the childbirth experience.

Furthermore, in addition to maternity leave, the bill underscores the significance of paternity leave for fathers, granting them the opportunity to create a strong bond with their newborns.

It cites a study demonstrating that numerous countries globally offer statutory paid paternity leave, emphasizing the importance of enabling both parents to welcome and nurture their new family members.

You are intelligent, come and join me as running mate – Osofo Kyiri Abosom to Kennedy Agyapong

The Founder and Leader of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Christian Kwabena Andrew, also known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, has extended an invitation to a prospective flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, to consider joining him as his running mate.

He expressed his belief that Kennedy Agyapong’s aspirations to lead the NPP may face challenges given the unfolding dynamics of the party’s primaries.

Osofo Kyiri Abosom commended Kennedy Agyapong for his intellect and extensive political experience, suggesting that he would make an excellent match as a running mate for the 2024 general elections.

During an interview with Kasapa FM, monitored by GhanaWeb, Osofo Kyiri Abosom encouraged Kennedy Agyapong to switch allegiance from the NPP and stand as his running mate for GUM in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

“With my brother Kennedy Agyapong, I would say he is knowledgeable and intelligent, so if it’s possible he should come and support me. This is a serious issue I’m telling him. He is such an intelligent person but his long talks and everything he is doing will be in vain. So if he can he should join forces with me for GUM.

Osofo Kyiri Abosom pointed out that Kennedy Agyapong’s path to becoming the flagbearer of GUM was not feasible since he had already been elected and officially endorsed.

Consequently, the most suitable role for Kennedy Agyapong within the party would be to assume the position of a running mate.

“If Ken wants to lead while I become the running mate, that’s not possible because I’ve already been elected so why would I step down for him to take charge? The electoral commission has taken my details already so should I go and change it? that’s not possible,” he said.

Akosombo Dam spillage: Now is not the time for politics – GNAT

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has emphasized the need for practical actions to assist the communities affected by the overflow of the Akosombo and Kpong dams, rather than political statements.

Over 12,000 individuals in mainly the Volta Region have been displaced due to the dam spillage, which the teachers’ union described as a tragic, man-made situation.

In a statement, GNAT expressed concern about whether the downstream communities were adequately informed or educated about the potential consequences of the dam spillage and the necessary precautions.

The statement emphasized the urgency of providing immediate aid to the affected communities, given the economic challenges faced by Ghanaians in this era of austerity.

“The situation is quite tragic, more so when it is man-made. We, of GNAT, wonder whether the people lower stream the dam were educated or warned of the fate that awaited them arising out of the spillage and the steps to take so as not to be overwhelmed as is now the case.

“If this was not done, then this is unfortunate and we wonder how fellow compatriots will overcome it in this era of austerity and economic malice. It is a result of this that GNAT calls on the government and international bodies and agencies to go to the immediate aid of the affected communities and people, and save them from this unexpected calamity.

GNAT called on the government and international organizations to step in and assist the affected communities and people in dealing with this unexpected calamity.

“This should not be the time for political statements but pragmatic steps to ease the people out of the pain and anguish they are going through.”This should not be the time for political statements but pragmatic steps to ease the people out of the pain and anguish they are going through,” he added.

GNAT equally backed a call for the declaration of a state of emergency in the affected areas, “since the circumstances under which a state of emergency could be declared — whether for natural or man-made disasters — is being experienced currently”.

A few days ago, President Akufo-Addo expressed his condolences to the thousands of displaced people in the Volta Region who have been affected by floods caused by the overflow of dams.

During his visit on Monday, October 16, 2023, the President met with traditional leaders and residents of Mepe, where he conveyed his sympathies regarding the disaster.

President Akufo-Addo explained that despite his absence from the country when the disaster occurred, he took immediate action to mobilize the government and formulate a strategy to provide assistance in the wake of the tragedy.

“When it happened, I was in America, on official business, when the Chief of Staff called me in America about what had happened, and we discussed what had to be done; so that is when we agreed to establish an Inter-Ministerial Committee to co-ordinate government’s response to this tragedy”, he noted, adding: “The co-ordination is about immediate, about tomorrow, and about tomorrow, tomorrow”.

Mr. Akufo-Addo said: “The most important thing was, first of all, to ensure the life of people”.

“That is why nine centres were established here in Mepe for all the displaced people”, he explained, indicating: “And all the people in these nine centres have been provided relief items by NADMO; and its NADMO’s intention to continue the exercise of providing relief items”.

“So, apart from what NADMO is doing, we have also to think about the future”, he said.

The president said he was aware that the people of the area were predominantly farmers.

The president acknowledged that the rivers that overflowed destroyed the many farms along their banks and announced that “one of the things that the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Finance, and the Office of the President is going to be working [on] with the District Assembly, is to decide exactly the nature of the support we have to give to you when the water has gone away, so nobody could do the farm”.

“This is why I am saying that the committee is working in several phases. One, immediate relief; and then tomorrow”, he added.

The president then pointed out that he was a president for all Ghanaians, thus, his intervention irrespective of politics.

“But I want you to know that the government is going to do everything in its powers to assist, to make sure that things are all right. I think everybody here, and I hope you take the message all across, North Tongu, South Tongu, Central Tongu, that when these things happen and government acts, politics does not come into the matter at all.”

“When I took the Oath of Office as President, I took the Oath of Office as President of every single individual in Ghana; of all peoples in Ghana, all districts, and whether they voted for me or not, once I have taken the oath, I am the President of all people. So Togbe, you and your elders, I want the people here, beginning with you and the elders to understand that when something like this happens and the government acts, government is acting for Ghanaians, all Ghanaians”, the president asserted.

He stressed: “I came here because Ghanaians are having difficulties and are suffering, and it is my responsibility to try and help. Because, if it is a question of counting who votes for me and who doesn’t vote for me, I shouldn’t be here, because you don’t vote for me, but that is not a concern, and in any event, one day you will vote for me and my party.”

“So, Togbe, I came here this afternoon, to express my sympathies and to commiserate with all the people of Mepe, and the area.”

  • Akosombo Dam spillage: This could happen to anyone, let’s support the victims – Nana Akomea

Akosombo Dam spillage: This could happen to anyone, let’s support the victims – Nana Akomea

The Chief Executive Officer of the InterCity State Transport Corporation, Nana Akomea, has called on all Ghanaians to join forces in a national endeavor to provide relief support to the victims affected by the Akosombo dam spillage.

Addressing the media, Nana Akomea proposed that the government should launch a nationwide appeal, urging every Ghanaian to contribute to assisting the victims.

“We must appeal for international assistance because it is a national emergency, it has to be a national effort; everybody contributes something small. It is not their fault that this disaster has happened to them. Unfortunately, the country hasn’t got all the resources…So, it’s a huge national effort.

“We should appeal for international assistance. We should launch a national appeal. Many many Ghanaians would contribute to it” to help remedy the situation, ,” he appealed.

Nana Akomea stressed that while President Akufo- Addo has pledged the government’s support to the victims, addressing this challenge requires a collective effort that goes beyond government resources.

“We should launch a national appeal. Many many Ghanaians would contribute to it” to help remedy the situation, he stressed.

He appealed to all Ghanaians to support the government, underscoring that the victims are fellow citizens, and such disasters could potentially affect anyone in the future.

He highlighted the necessity of launching a national appeal, expressing confidence that numerous Ghanaians would contribute to alleviating the situation.

“There are so many settlements downstream that the spillage hasn’t affected yet but immediately, we have to evacuate all of them because the water is still flowing. We have to resettle them temporarily and maybe in another two/three weeks when the water dries up, the reconstruction, the people who have lost their properties; they need support to replace [those] their household gadgets, carpets, furniture, electronic, disinfectants…So, it’s a huge effort that has to be done,” he appealed.

The Akosombo dam spillage has led to the displacement of at least 26,000 people living along the lower Volta Basin, causing the submersion of their homes and valuable assets.

Meanwhile, the Volta River Authority (VRA) has warned that Tema and its surrounding areas within the Greater Accra Region, may face significant risk should the water level of the Akosombo Dam exceed its operational capacity.

Speaking to the media, Deputy Chief Executive of the VRA, Edward Obeng Kenzo, disclosed that the current water level of the dam stands at 277.26 feet, while its maximum operational level is 277.5 feet.

He added that going beyond this operational level could jeopardize the dam’s integrity, potentially leading to a massive release of water that could engulf areas along the Volta River all the way to Tema.

To prevent any unforeseen disaster, the VRA has indicated that it will be necessary to continue releasing water from the dam if the water level continues to rise.

“We don’t want to spill any additional volume of water. We are tracking and with the data, we believe that we may not spill any volume of water. But if there should be any unexpected heavy rains into the dam, we’ll be compelled to spill. Where we are now, we are around 277.26 feet of water behind the dam. The dam’s operational level is 276, the maximum allowable operational level of the dam is 277.5 feet.”

“So we are left with only about 0.24 feet to get to that maximum operational level of the dam. So any level beyond this, we are putting the dam’s integrity at risk. If the dam should break, the volume of water that will come out of the dam – all those along the banks of the river, all the way to somewhere around Tema will be wiped into the sea. No human being will be saved, no structure will be saved, nothing will be saved,” Mr Kenzo said.

Dam spillage: We must stop behaving like ‘vultures’ and fix this – Nana Akomea to govt

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Okaikwei South, Nana Akomea, has urged the government to adopt a proactive and enduring approach to mitigate flooding resulting from calculated spillages of dams to release excess water.

Speaking to the media, Nana Akomea criticized the government’s tendency to respond to disasters with vocal gestures rather than pursuing sustainable resolutions.

He emphasized that averting flooding in waterway areas could be achieved by promptly addressing unauthorized constructions.

“One of the leaders was talking about Weija Dam flooding, that is not like the Akosombo one that its experienced once in a blue moon. But that of Weija comes every year, Accra floods is experienced every year. When they occur there is a lot of noise from government, when the flooding subsides everyone keeps quite. This attitude is a behavior of a vulture.

“For Wejia, if the person has built his or house in the flood prone area compensate or relocate them if they have permit, if they don’t have permit destroy the building,” he added.

He stressed the importance of demolishing such structures to safeguard lives and assets.

Nana Akomea further underscored the necessity for the government to enact stringent directives preventing construction within flood-prone zones.

Nana Akomea’s remarks come amidst the calculated release of water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams since September 15, 2023, owing to a consistent rise in inflow patterns and water levels at the Akosombo reservoir.

The extensive flooding that ensued has necessitated the evacuation of a substantial population in the impacted regions.

Meanwhile, the Volta River Authority (VRA) has disclosed that the ongoing rains could necessitate further spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams.

Speaking to the media, the Deputy Chief Executive of the VRA, Edward Obeng Kenzo, indicated that the current water level at the dam stands at 277.26 feet, nearing its maximum operational level of 277.5 feet.

According to him, going beyond this threshold could pose a severe risk to the dam’s structural integrity and potentially lead to a substantial release of water, putting areas along the Volta River, extending down to Tema, in jeopardy.

He added that to avert a potential catastrophe, the VRA may find it necessary to continue discharging water should water levels continue to rise.

No human being will be saved, no structure will be saved, nothing will be saved,” Mr. Kenzo cautioned.

Akosombo Dam spillage: Rising water level has not affected Sogakope bridge – Amoako-Attah assures

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr. Kwasi Amoako-Attah, has provided reassurance to travelers regarding the safety of the Sogakope bridge amidst rising water levels caused by the spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong dams into the Volta River.

Addressing concerns about the safety of Ghana’s longest bridge, which has been affected by the rising water, Mr. Amoako-Attah emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring the bridge’s safety.

He highlighted the extensive maintenance the bridge has received since its commissioning in 1967.

“This is the longest bridge over water in our country and the government will not allow anything to happen to the bridge. The government is working collaboratively with all key stakeholders to address the issue. The government is on top of the issues and the President is very particular on this issue.”

“This bridge is part of our program even before the advent of this disaster. The major activity on the bridge is to change all 18 expansion joints and we have entered an agreement with MC company based in Tema. We signed an MoU with them about three months ago. Work will start very soon,” he added.

Acknowledging the critical nature of the Sogakope bridge, Mr. Amoako-Attah assured that the government, in collaboration with key stakeholders, is actively addressing the issue.

He emphasized the President’s keen interest in the matter and mentioned frequent inspections of the bridge by engineers.

The Minister detailed plans for the rehabilitation of the bridge, including the replacement of all 18 expansion joints, which had been part of their program even before the recent disaster.

He noted the agreement with a Tema-based company for the rehabilitation work, which is set to commence soon.

Mr. Amoako-Attah assured that the Ministry is closely coordinating with the Volta River Authority (VRA) to monitor the water levels and ensure safety. He mentioned ongoing efforts to manage aquatic weeds and other impediments to the water flow.

Expressing gratitude to various stakeholders, including the canoe fishermen association, for their support, the Minister promised that roads affected by the flooding would be repaired.

He affirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the issue comprehensively, emphasizing that affected roads would be fixed after the resolution of the flood situation.

“At the end of this problem, the government will take a general look at all the roads affected. I want to assure the people on behalf of the government that at the end of this my ministry and its stakeholders will ensure the roads are fixed.”

The flooding has affected over 3,000 people in Central Tongu and led to the displacement of over 4,000 individuals in North Tongu.

St. Kizito Senior High School in Mepe, North Tongu District, is providing refuge to the largest number of victims, with support and relief efforts from organizations such as VRA, NADMO, and various security services.

Voter ID cards of Guan constituents to be replaced for 2024 Polls – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has initiated the process of reissuing identification cards to the residents of the Guan constituency in preparation for the 2024 general elections.

The Guan constituency comprises the towns of Santrokofi, Agbafu, Lolobi, and Likpe (SALL), which were excluded from the 2020 elections following the establishment of the new Oti Region. Consequently, residents of SALL will have a Member of Parliament (MP) in the upcoming 2024 election.

During a press conference held in Accra on Tuesday, Deputy Chair of the EC, Samuel Tettey, made the official announcement.

“The commission wishes to inform the general public that it has started replacing the ID cards for voters in the Guan District from Tuesday, October 3 to Thursday, November 2. This has become necessary because in 2020, voters in the Guan District registered in the Jasikan District.”

Mr. Tettey further clarified, “With the creation of the Guan District, the voter ID cards bearing the Jasikan District have been changed to reflect the code of the Guan District,” he stated.

Meanwhile, the EC has announced its intention to publicly disclose the identities of guarantors who violated the regulations during the recent limited voter registration exercise.

The commission firmly condemns these violations and is committed to taking action against those responsible.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, October 17, Deputy Commissioner Samuel Tetteh emphasized the EC’s determination to register all eligible voters while holding a zero-tolerance stance towards any illegal activities.

During the limited registration period, which occurred in September and concluded on Monday, October 2, across all 268 district offices of the commission, a total of 910,996 voters were registered.

The Ashanti Region had the highest number of registrants, accounting for approximately 16% of the total, while the Savannah Region had the lowest, representing only 2%.

Mr. Tetteh urged the government to provide funding to the National Identification Authority (NIA) to facilitate the issuance of the Ghana Card to all citizens.

Additionally, he called upon Parliament to approve the Constitutional Instrument (CI) that would designate the Ghana Card as the sole identification document for voter registration.

  • More rainfall expected in Lower Volta Basin – GMeT

More rainfall expected in Lower Volta Basin – GMeT

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT) has issued a warning indicating that additional rainfall is anticipated in the lower Volta Basin, the area which has been severely affected by the release of water from the Akosombo Dam.

Consequently, the agency has called on the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and other relevant authorities to take immediate measures to relocate affected individuals to safer areas.

The Head of Central Analysis and Forecasting for GMeT, Felicity Ahafianyo, emphasized the importance of flood victims adhering to NADMO’s guidance and promptly relocating to reduce the risks associated with ongoing and anticipated rainfall in the region.

She explained that the weather forecast indicates the likelihood of rain in the North Tongu area and its surroundings until the 23rd of October.

“Rain is still in the forecast for North Tongu and its environs. Between now and the 23rd of October, rain is still in the forecast over the lower Volta basin area,” she said.

“I think from our point, we will also add our voice for our brothers and sisters to relocate, and listen to the authorities, NADMO, VRA, and all other authorities. They should relocate to a safer place,” she added.

Currently, residents in Mepe, located in the North Tongu district and various parts of the Volta region, are grappling with the repercussions of the recent spillage from the Akosombo Dam, leading to the flooding of their homes and resulting in significant losses.

The decision by the Volta River Authority (VRA) to release excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong hydroelectric dams, although necessary for dam integrity, has presented a range of challenges for the affected communities.

Homes, farms, and even cemeteries have been submerged in floodwaters, disrupting essential services, including water and electricity supply, and necessitating the relocation of residents to higher ground for safety.

The VRA has justified the controlled spillage due to the rapid filling of both dams to capacity, primarily from upstream rainfall.

Engineers at the VRA have underlined the critical significance of maintaining water levels within the dams to prevent potential dam failure, emphasizing the necessity of this controlled spillage to protect the structural integrity of the dams.

Ablakwa commends Duncan-Williams and Eastwood Anaba for resigning from National Cathedral Board

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu constituency in the Volta Region, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed his approval and appreciation for the recent resignations of Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Reverend Eastwood Anaba from their positions on the Board of Trustees responsible for overseeing the construction of Ghana’s National Cathedral.

Mr. Ablakwa, who temporarily diverted his attention from visiting constituents who were grappling with the consequences of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams’ spillage, took a moment to commend the decision taken by these respected clergymen to step down from their roles on the board.

Archbishop Duncan-Williams and Reverend Anaba released a joint statement explaining that their decision to resign from the Board of Trustees overseeing the construction of the National Cathedral was primarily driven by the government’s failure to designate an independent accounting firm responsible for conducting an audit of all public funds contributed to the project.

Mr. Ablakwa in an interview with Citi News said that the resignations are a confirmation of all the ills he has been speaking about the project and calling for it to be stopped for an independent audit to be conducted.

“I want to commend highly the two revered clergymen. Some may say it is delayed, but I will say better later than never because they have covered themselves in glory with this resignation, and it is a clear confirmation of the things I have been talking about.”

“Look at how they say they have been frustrated within the board about getting the board to carry out an independent audit. If these folks have nothing to hide, why did they really prevent efforts by these respected clergymen to have an independent audit? We will have time in the coming days, for an independent parliamentary inquiry on this matter. Our motion has gone through, the Speaker approved it and the House has voted on it, and we are just waiting for the NPP side to send their membership, and we will have a full-blown inquiry and delve into the matters.”

Names of guarantors who breached rules in just-ended Limited Voter Registration to be made public – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced its intention to publicly disclose the identities of guarantors who violated the regulations during the recent limited voter registration exercise.

He said “On the guarantor system the commission is of the view that under our current circumstances, the guarantor system has outlived its usefulness and cannot be maintained. The best proof of a person’s citizenship in Ghana is the Ghana Card.

“The use of the guarantor system is fraught with blatant abuse as witnessed in the just-ended voter registration exercise. Most countries in the subregion like Nigeria, South Africa,  Senegal, Rwanda and Kenya do not use the guarantor system as evidence of identification. If, indeed, we are committed to strengthening our electoral processes then the guarantor system must be abolished sooner than later.

“We call on the government to fund NIA, additionally, we entreat parliament to pass the CI on the registration of voters. The Commission appalls the encouragement of minors to register, this is a crime, it does not augur well for us as a nation and we urge all citizens, and stakeholders to join the commission to solve this problem.”

He added “The sad part is that these minors were bussed to registration centers by citizens who should know better, this is unpardonable and we once again call on the government to resource NIA  to produce the cards and parliament to approve the CI to enable us to use the Ghana Card as sole means to identify a person’s citizenship.”

Mr. Tetteh emphasized, “We call on the government to fund the NIA, and we implore Parliament to pass the CI on voter registration. The Commission strongly disapproves of the registration of minors, which is a crime and detrimental to our nation. We urge all citizens and stakeholders to collaborate with the commission to address this issue.”

He further added, “What is disheartening is that these minors were transported to registration centers by individuals who should have known better. This is inexcusable, and we once again call on the government to support the NIA in card production, and Parliament to approve the CI, allowing us to use the Ghana Card as the sole means of verifying citizenship.”

The EC has informed the public that guarantors who violated the law by vouching for more than 10 applicants will face consequences. Their names will be published in national newspapers, and they will be prosecuted.

While the commission is committed to registering all eligible applicants, it will not overlook individuals who violate its rules.

Odododiodio attack: NDC visits Citi TV, apologises to journalist assaulted

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), in response to the unfortunate incident involving an attack on Citi FM/Citi TV’s Akosua Otchere, has expressed its dedication to ensuring that those responsible for the assault are apprehended and face appropriate legal consequences.

During a visit to Citi FM/Citi TV’s management, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, conveyed the party’s deepest apologies to Ms. Otchere and the station.

The attack occurred at the NDC’s South La office during the vetting of parliamentary candidate aspirants for the Odododiodio constituency.

“We are here from the NDC’s headquarters and we have been delegated by the leadership of the party to come and visit the managers of Citi TV and Citi FM to express our sincerest apologies to the station for the unfortunate incident that happened at our regional office sometime last week,” Gyamfi said.

“It is very unfortunate that Akosua Otchere, who has been covering a number of NDC events, got attacked. We have seen the extent of the injury she sustained, and we are praying and hoping for a speedy recovery. We are committed to providing some support to assist her medical treatment. But more importantly, we want to express our commitment to investigating this matter with the objective of apprehending the perpetrators and punishing them appropriately, both at the level of the party and the level of the state. We have officially reported the matter to the police, and the functional executive committee will be discussing the way forward on this matter.”

Sammy Gyamfi also affirmed the NDC’s commitment to empowering journalists, enabling them to work freely and impartially in holding political leaders accountable.

“The NDC does not subscribe to violence at all. We are a peace-loving democratic party, and we believe in the role of the media in nation-building and in holding the leaders of this country accountable. Therefore, we would be the last people to endorse or support something like this,” he said.

  • Akosombo spillage: GMA raises concerns over potential cholera outbreak

Akosombo spillage: GMA raises concerns over potential cholera outbreak

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has issued a warning about the potential outbreak of cholera in regions affected by flooding caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Consequently, the GMA has called for the Ministry of Health to be included in the 13-member inter-ministerial committee established to assess the flood situation.

Dr. Richmond Selormey, the Acting General Secretary of the GMA, emphasized the critical role of the health sector in providing relief efforts during emergencies such as the current flooding.

He expressed concerns about the increased risk of waterborne diseases, injuries from floating objects, and the potential outbreak of conditions like cholera, typhoid, and malaria due to widespread pooling of water.

“If you take this flooding for example, people have lost their livelihoods, people have been displaced from their homes, many don’t have access to basic amenities that they had before and therefore there’s a great risk for waterborne diseases, for various injuries because of floating objects, The outbreak of some conditions as cholera, typhoid, and even malaria because there is a pooling of water everywhere.

“There is a big problem of continuity of care because people who used to access health facilities have been cut off. We are aware that there are about three health centres that have been cut off by the floods.  This, we think, makes a compelling case that the Ministry, not the person of the Minister per se, has a big role to play in these efforts and it is important that the Health Ministry is included in this inter-ministerial committee,” he added.

Dr. Selormey pointed out that access to basic amenities and healthcare facilities had been severely impacted by the flooding, with several health centers inaccessible due to the floodwaters.

Therefore, the GMA urged the Ministry of Health to play a significant role in the inter-ministerial committee.

The inter-ministerial committee, comprising 13 members, was formed by the government to address the issues arising from the flooding caused by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

The committee is chaired by the Chief of Staff and includes various ministers responsible for areas such as National Security, Interior, Defense, Energy, Finance, Local Government, Works and Housing, Roads and Highways, Environment, Sanitation, Lands and Natural Resources, and Information.

Communities like Mepe and Battor in the North Tongu Constituency have been severely affected by the flooding triggered by the Akosombo Dam spillage. The spillage is expected to continue until excess inflows in the lake recede, according to the Volta River Authority (VRA).

The VRA’s CEO, Mr. Emmanuel Antwi-Darkwa, explained that the spillage was necessitated by higher-than-expected inflows into the lake, which is a normal occurrence at this time of year. He emphasized the need to evacuate people from affected areas for their safety until the water levels recede.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo assured affected communities that the government is committed to helping alleviate their hardships. He praised the VRA for its preparedness and efforts to minimize the impact of the flooding and assured that the government would take all necessary actions to assist those affected.

The flooding has had significant adverse effects on education, healthcare, mobility, shelter, and access to food, especially for children in the affected areas.

Voter registration exercise: Supreme Court dismisses NDC, other parties’ injunction request against EC

The Supreme Court, on October 17, 2023, rejected an injunction application filed by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and four additional political parties against the Electoral Commission (EC).

Five political parties, including the NDC, the Convention People’s Party (CPP), All People’s Congress, Liberal Party of Ghana, and the Great Consolidated Popular Party, had collectively sued the Electoral Commission on September 7, objecting to the Commission’s decision to limit voter registration centers to district offices.

The parties argued that this decision could potentially deny many eligible voters their right to register for participation in public elections. They sought an injunction to halt the registration exercise until the main case could be heard. However, the Commission proceeded with the exercise despite the injunction.

During the hearing on October 7, 2023, neither the applicants nor their legal representatives were present in court. However, the Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, along with their lawyer, Justin Amenuvor, attended the hearing.

Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, presiding over a 5-member panel, explained that the case could not be scheduled earlier due to the Supreme Court’s recess during August and September, as the court does not typically convene during this period.

Lead counsel for the Electoral Commission, Justin Amenuvor, informed the court that the parties had not filed any statement of case after submitting the injunction.

“The Supreme Court doesn’t sit on vacation. There are no rules for SC to sit during the month of August and September. That is why the application was fixed for 17th of October, 2023. Discussions of fixing it for today should be premised on the SC not being able to sit during vacations except by a special fiat,” she explained to the court.

“I believe that they are all satisfied with the exercise that went on. Till date there has not been any statement off case. Just a writ and application,” he added.

Consequently, the Apex court ruled to strike out the application presented by the five political parties. The five-member panel included Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Torkornoo, Justice Baffoe Bonnie, Justice Mensa Bonsu, Justice Barbara Ackah-Yensu, and Justice Ernest Gyawu.

  • No relief, you just came to insult us voltarian – Dzifa Gomashie to Akufo-Addo

No relief, you just came to insult us voltarian – Dzifa Gomashie to Akufo-Addo

Ketu South MP, Abla Dzifa Gomashie has accused President Akufo-Addo, of insulting and showing disrespect to the chiefs and people of the Volta Region during his visit to t the area.

She pointed out that the President’s remarks during his tour of flood-affected areas on October 16, 2023, were offensive.

During his visit, President Akufo-Addo expressed his intent to help the situation caused by the planned spillage of excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams, and he emphasized that his assistance was irrespective of the people’s political affiliations.

Abla Dzifa Gomashie voiced her disappointment with the President’s comments, arguing that he should have acknowledged the region’s prior appeals for assistance, especially in dealing with tidal waves that affected the coastal areas of the Volta Region.

“His Excellency, the president, should be ashamed of himself because if you go into your archives, you’ll see that from 2021, the three MPs along the coast of the Volta Region — my good self, the MP for Keta, Hon Kwame Dzudzoli Gakpey and the MP for Anlo, Hon Richard Kwami Sefe, called on the president many times to come to the aid of our people who were inundated with the tidal waves that had hit our communities.”

“In my particular case, in one year, the tidal waves hit me three times, on none of those occasions did the president speak about it, tweet about it, or think about it.”

She cited multiple instances in which she and other MPs had called on the President to provide aid for the affected communities, but these appeals seemed to go unnoticed.

“His ministers came here, made promises, and left and till date, there’s no record anywhere, where you’ll find if either the president or his vice president or his ministers came back on that issue of what was happening to us”, she bemoaned.

She said: “We’re still in that same situation and he still has not spoken about it.”

She expressed her dissatisfaction with the President’s recent visit, particularly his failure to apologize for neglect and the inadequate handling of the disaster in the Volta Region.

“After weeks of this disaster and planned spillage of excess water from the dam by the VRA, weeks after, the president now gathers courage and comes to us and the first thing he says to us, is not to apologise for the neglect, it’s not to apologise for the ineffective way in which he has handled this disaster in the Volta Region, it was not to apologise to the chiefs and people and the ones who voted for him to get the 50 percent plus one; he did not apologise to us. He comes and rubs it in our faces that if it was about voting, then he wouldn’t have been here, but you came with your empty hands and you want to come and insult us.”

“I am disgusted, I’m horrified that His Excellency can descend that low,” she condemned.

She accused the President of coming to the region with “empty hands” and delivering an insulting message instead of demonstrating empathy or addressing the region’s challenges.

In summary, Abla Dzifa Gomashie criticized President Akufo-Addo for his visit to the flood-affected areas in the Volta Region, particularly his comments, which she regarded as disrespectful and insulting to the people of the region.

  • There will be more spillage if rains don’t stop – VRA

There will be more spillage if rains don’t stop – VRA

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has disclosed that the ongoing rains could necessitate further spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams.

He added that to avert a potential catastrophe, the VRA may find it necessary to continue discharging water should water levels continue to rise.

No human being will be saved, no structure will be saved, nothing will be saved,” Mr. Kenzo cautioned.

The decision to release water from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams was initiated on September 15, 2023, due to a sustained increase in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir.

Consequently, this led to widespread flooding in various regions, including South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, among others.

In response to these challenges, President Akufo-Addo has committed government resources to assist flood victims in the Eastern, Greater Accra, and Volta regions.

During his visit to the affected areas, he assured that an inter-ministerial committee would address immediate relief and take proactive measures to prevent future disasters.

Additionally, President Akufo-Addo revealed the government’s intent to collaborate with district assemblies to provide support to those affected when the floodwaters recede.

“I am aware that you are a farming people and the people who are farming on the banks of the rivers and had their crops destroyed, one of the things the Agriculture Ministry, Finance Ministry and the Office of the President are going to do is to work together with the district assemblies to decide the exact support we have to give to you when the water has gone away.”
“And this is why I am saying that the Committee is working in several phases, one being to provide immediate relief, and then to prevent such happening in the future and I want you to know the government is going to do everything in its powers to assist to ensure everything is all right.”

National Cathedral Project: Duncan-Williams, Rev. Eastwood Anaba resign from Board

The Founder and General Overseer of the United Denominations of Action Chapel Churches Worldwide, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, and President of the Eastwood Anaba Ministries, Rev. Eastwood Anaba, have tendered their resignations from the Board of Trustees overseeing the construction of the National Cathedral in Ghana.

The National Cathedral, envisioned as a symbol of unity and pride for Ghanaians and a place of national worship, has been a source of controversy since its inception.

In a joint statement, Archbishop Duncan-Williams and Reverend Anaba cited the government’s failure to appoint an independent accounting firm to audit the public funds contributed to the National Cathedral project as the reason for their resignation.

“Despite our prayers, best hopes and wishes, unfortunately, a needed audit to help restore public confidence and trust in this consequential project has not been enacted to the best of our knowledge. Since January 2023, we awaited news to no avail, regarding the finding of the audit.

“We, therefore, regret that as a matter of conscience and faith, we hereby submit to you our resignation from the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral.”

These esteemed clergymen had previously called for the suspension of the National Cathedral’s construction in January 2023, pending a project audit.

They expressed concern about the challenging economic conditions in Ghana, which they believed would hinder the project’s timely completion.

They proposed that an independent accounting firm should audit all public funds contributed to and expended by the National Cathedral for transparency and accountability to the Ghanaian people.

“The current economic climate in Ghana presents obstacles to the timely construction and completion of the National Cathedral… We, therefore, resolve: That in the spirit and cause of transparency and accountability to the Ghanaian people, the current Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral shall appoint an independent, nationally recognized accounting firm to audit all public funds contributed to and spent by the National Cathedral,” the two clergymen said in a memo.

Dag Heward-Mills resigns from Board of Trustees

Bishop Dag Heward-Mills of Lighthouse Chapel International stepped down from the National Cathedral’s Board of Trustees in August 2022.

In his resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of the Board, he expressed disappointment at the National Cathedral’s leadership for neglecting the concerns he had repeatedly raised in various letters, with the latest one sent through the Ghana Charismatic Bishops’ Conference in June 2022.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, was among the 14 individuals copied on this letter.

“I feel that the treatment of the issues I have raised in my several letters has been unfortunate. My letters have been ignored in the past; not attended to for years, and at best addressed flippantly.”

“You may recall I have spoken passionately and written extensively about the costs, the design, the location, the fundraising, the mobilization of the churches, and the role of the trustees. These, if heeded, would have made our project more achievable. Generally speaking, my inputs, my opinions, and my letters have been trivialized and set aside.”

Akosombo Dam spillage victims have not been relocated to Saglemi Housing Units – NADMO

The Head of Public Relations for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), George Ayisi, has refuted claims that victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage have been relocated to the Saglemi Housing Unit.

Speaking to the media, he clarified that the Saglemi Housing Unit is not being used as a relocation center for flood victims. While some local chiefs suggested using the Saglemi Housing Units for this purpose, it has not been implemented.

Mr Ayisi explained that the flood victims from the Akosombo spillage have instead been temporarily housed in community centers throughout the affected areas.

“No, no, it’s not true. Some of the chiefs were proposing that that be done but we’ve not done that yet”.

“They are being kept in community centres. All the nine districts, identified areas. Bator is there. Mepe area. Sogakope is there. Adzidome and all the places that have been affected, we identify a place and we put them there,” he added.

These community centers are spread across the nine districts that have been affected, including Bator, Mepe, Sogakope, Adzidome, and other places impacted by the flooding.

The Volta River Authority (VRA) initiated the controlled spillage of the Akosombo and Kpong Dams on September 15, 2023, due to a consistent rise in the water level upstream of the Akosombo Dam, primarily caused by heavy rainfall.

Since the commencement of the spillage, some communities downstream of the Volta River have experienced flooding as a result of the excess water released from the dam.

The government has established an inter-ministerial committee to coordinate the response and provide assistance to the flood victims.

This committee will assess the situation, identify immediate needs, and implement measures to mitigate the impact of the flooding on the affected residents.

Former Peace FM Journalist denies involvement in missing excavators scandal

The central figure in the excavator controversy, Seth Mantey, has refuted claims of involvement in the sale of the equipment.

Mr Mantey was implicated in a report by former Minister of Science and Environment, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, which alleged that he used his personal bank account for receiving alleged bribes.

During a press conference in Accra, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presented what they referred to as “smoking gun evidence” implicating Mantey, Ekow Ewusi, and John Ofori Atta, a former Central Regional Security Coordinator, in the sale of at least 27 excavators confiscated from illegal miners.

However, Mantey denied providing any formal statement to the minister regarding the matter.

In an interview with the media, Mr Mantey stated that Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s allegations against him are untrue.

He recounted the origins of the issue dating back to October 2019 when he was invited to the minister’s office and asked to sign a document, which he declined. Later, he was asked to print out his bank statement.

Mr Mantey clarified,“the issues started in October 2019 when I was invited to Professor Frimpong-Boateng’s office and asked to sign a document that had been written by them. I refused to sign the document. They later asked me to print out my bank statement.

“I am speaking because there has been an initial press conference by the NDC relating to the issues. The statement that the NDC talked about in their press conference is fake. I have not written any statement nor have I signed that statement. In the purported statement, there are some contacts on the statement which are not mine.”

“I have never said anywhere that I have been an errand boy for some of the individuals mentioned in the statement. Those who wrote the statement have even apologized to me. This is not the statement I wrote after I was invited by the police. I don’t work for Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, so that allegation shouldn’t be taken seriously,” he stated.

He further disassociated himself from claims of being an “errand boy” for individuals mentioned in the statement and highlighted that the individuals who authored the statement had apologized to him.

Mr Mantey emphasized that the statement did not represent what he had written after being summoned by the police, and he does not work for Prof. Frimpong-Boateng, discrediting the allegation.

PFJ 2 outlines solid strategy to attain food security in 5 years – Agric Minister

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has provided assurance to Ghanaians regarding his ministry’s capability to meet the nation’s food security requirements.

He made this commitment while addressing farmers and financial institutions at a Presidential Breakfast Meeting on Agriculture and Agribusiness Financing in Accra.

The Minister emphasized that within the next five years, Ghana can confidently assert its status as a food-secure and resilient nation. However, he expressed concern about the ongoing practice of importing onions and tomatoes from the Sahelian regions and pledged to rectify this issue promptly.

Dr. Bryan underscored his dedication to transforming Ghana’s agriculture sector through a new strategy, acknowledging the significant responsibility it entails.

He expressed confidence in the agriculture sector’s untapped potential, including arable land for crop production, suitable areas for rice cultivation, favorable soils for a variety of crops, irrigation resources, favorable weather, and diverse food commodities that offer numerous opportunities for job creation within the agricultural value chain.

The Minister also mentioned the significance of the Planting for Food and Jobs 2.0 (PFJ 2.0) initiative, emphasizing its vital role in achieving self-sufficiency. He noted that Ghana’s poultry consumption far exceeds its production, with the country currently achieving less than 5% self-sufficiency.

In the PFJ 2.0 five-year plan, Ghana aims to increase self-sufficiency to 7% by the end of 2023, further to 13% in 2024, and ultimately reach full self-sufficiency of 110.6% by 2028.

Immediate efforts are being made to support poultry production, with 4.5 million day-old chicks, vaccines, and starter-pack feed being supplied to anchor farmers and their out-growers, resulting in an additional 13,200 MT of poultry meat production by the end of this year and a self-sufficiency level of 7%.

For 2024, the Ministry plans to further enhance the poultry sector, supporting 18 million day-old chicks, vaccines, and starter-pack feed, leading to a production of 42,600 MT of meat and increasing self-sufficiency to 13%.

Plans are also in motion to revive the poultry industry by rehabilitating 300 outgrown poultry farms across the country within the next 12 months, each capable of producing 200,000 birds within a 4-month poultry cycle.

“Sheer wickedness” – Akandoh on closure of Korle-Bu’s renal unit

The Minority Caucus in Parliament has condemned the decision of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital to keep its Renal Unit closed since May 2023, labeling it as “heartless and extremely cruel.”

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minority’s health spokesperson and MP for Juaboso, has criticized this move, deeming it insensitive and reflective of the incompetence of those overseeing the country’s healthcare sector.

During an interview with the media, Mr. Akandoh expressed his frustration, stating that the Health Minister had failed to fulfill his commitment to reopen the unit during a courtesy call made by the Minority.

He emphasized that the Caucus will persist in its efforts until the unit is accessible to the public again.

“It is unconscionable and sheer wickedness for any government in the world to close a sensitive unit like the renal unit in a health facility for more than four to five months to OPD and you would agree with me how this thing started. It started with an increase in the cost of dialysis, and we came in to tell them [Korle-Bu] that irrespective of the prevailing circumstances, you cannot sit in your office and increase prices, it must be subjected to the Fees and Charges Act of the country. So we went to Korle-Bu to meet the management, and we all agreed it was not the right thing to do so we then went to the Minister of Health and said whatever it takes to reopen the renal unit, we must do, and the Minister assured us that the unit will be reopened as soon as possible, and it is yet to reopen after one week.”

“If as a country, we do not have the resources to take care of less than 300 renal patients at Korle-Bu, then we have no business in government. That a government cannot look for resources to take care of renal patients is sheer wickedness. We must find money to reopen the unit and until the unit is reopened, we will not rest.”

Korle-Bu faced public backlash when it raised its renal dialysis costs from GHS¢380 to GHS¢765.42, triggering widespread disapproval of the increase. Affected patients revealed that the Renal Unit at the facility had been closed since May 2023.

Akosombo Dam Spillage: Assemblies of God to offer GHS20,000 to victims

The Assemblies of God, Ghana, has pledged GH¢20,000 and essential relief items for those affected by the Akosombo and Kpong dams spillage.

The controlled water release from the Akosombo and Kpong dams, initiated by the Volta River Authority (VRA) on September 15, 2023, due to rising water levels, has led to the displacement of over 12,000 individuals in various communities.

During a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, Reverend Dr. Stephen Wengam, the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, announced the church’s contribution.

He emphasized that it’s crucial for Ghanaians from all walks of life, political affiliations, and ethnic backgrounds to unite in supporting the flood victims because the government cannot bear the entire burden of relief efforts.

Dr. Wengam stated, “This is the time, therefore, for Ghanaians of all social backgrounds, financial standing, political affiliations, and ethnic extractions to rally to the aid of the suffering fathers, mothers, and children. Corporate Ghana and other benevolent bodies must also identify themselves with humanitarian efforts, while counselors and psychologists do their bits.”

He also called upon other faith-based groups to join in prayer for divine intervention in the flood disaster. As part of its commitment, the Assemblies of God, Ghana, will donate GH¢20,000 and provide relief items to alleviate the suffering of the victims.

The world must take prayers seriously, the enemy is planning a third World War – Archbishop Duncan-Williams

The Presiding Archbishop and General Overseer of the charismatic Action Chapel, Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has issued a warning about the urgent need for prayer, citing a potential plot by unspecified adversaries to incite a third world war.

During his address at the iPLUS40 2023 event, Archbishop Duncan-Williams stressed the importance of prayer in these tumultuous times. He expressed concerns that without vigilant prayer from Christians, unexpected challenges may arise.

He stated, “The world needs prayer; this world is in trouble. If you’re a student of prophecy and you look at the situation with Russia, China, Ukraine, and America, the enemy is setting a stage for a third World War. We might not see it now, but in a few years, you will witness what I am telling you right now. The only thing that can have an impact or delay it is intercession.”

“And if we don’t lead prayer now, and we take this for granted, situations can overtake us. There might be some surprise attacks, things that are not supposed to happen will happen when it is not supposed to happen now,” he added.

The Archbishop highlighted the critical role of intercession in potentially delaying or mitigating the impending threat of a third world war.

He further cautioned that failing to prioritize proactive prayer and intercession could lead to unforeseen events and situations unfolding unexpectedly.

Religious crusade in Goaso prompts temporary closure of schools

Two schools in Goaso have temporarily suspended their operations to accommodate a religious crusade unfolding at the town park. The affected educational institutions include Goaso Methodist School and Bosompra Basic School.

As per sources from GhanaWeb, additional schools across Goaso will also experience a temporary closure on Thursday and Friday to facilitate the same religious crusade, organized under the leadership of Chief Nana Akwasi Bosompra, with the theme “I am for Christ.”

During these days, regular classes will be on hold, but students are expected to don their uniforms and engage with their teachers in various activities associated with the crusade.

According to the source, “schools have been closed since yesterday at around 9 am, as they are utilizing the town park for a crusade known as ‘I am for Christ,’ which is championed by the Goaso Chief.”

This temporary suspension of school activities is slated to last for a week to ensure that the religious event does not disrupt the usual educational proceedings.

  • Akufo-Addo prone to mistakes when speaking without a written speech – Social Analyst

Akufo-Addo prone to mistakes when speaking without a written speech – Social Analyst

A social analyst, Andy Nana Wusu, has pointed out that President Akufo-Addo tends to make errors when delivering impromptu public speeches without a written text.

He explained that the president often speaks candidly without a prepared script when addressing the public, which can lead to inaccuracies.

These observations were prompted by a recent speech by President Akufo-Addo during his visit to flood-affected areas on October 16, 2023, caused by the spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams.

In his speech, the President acknowledged that the people in the area had not voted for him, but he was acting on behalf of the government to address the issue.

The President’s comments stirred mixed reactions from the public. Some criticized him for making a politically charged statement during a disaster, while others believed he was merely stating that the affected area was a stronghold of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Andy Nana Wusu, speaking to the media, noted that the President is not a naturally gifted public speaker and tends to make errors when speaking without a prepared text.

“If the president is speaking without a written speech, he often makes errors. God gave each of us strength. Some are good with public speaking, some are not.

“The venue where he was speaking, was it necessary that he said that? So, for me, we shouldn’t continue on that tangent because if we do, we will neglect the main concern which is the flood and the victims,” he added.

He emphasized the importance of focusing on the flood and its victims, suggesting that the timing and venue were not appropriate for the President’s comments.

Here are excerpts of what the President said to the flood victims:

“When I took the oath of office as president, I took the oath of office as president to every single individual in Ghana, of all people, districts in Ghana. And whether they voted for me or not, once I have taken the oath, I am the president of all the people.

So, Torgbui, you and your elders, I want the people here, beginning with you and the elders, to understand that when something like this happens and the government acts, the government is acting for Ghanaians, that is all Ghanaians.

I came here because Ghanaians are having difficulties and are suffering, and it is my responsibility to try and help.

Because if it is the question of counting who votes for me and who doesn’t vote for me, I shouldn’t be here, because you don’t vote for me, but that is not my concern. And in any event, you will vote for me and my party.”

Green leafy vegetables key to healthy growth – IMaH Dietician

A Dietician at the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH), Ms. Ama Hienne Amoako, has promoted the consumption of nutrient-packed green leafy vegetables to support healthy growth and development.

Speaking to the media, she emphasized that green leafy vegetables, such as kontomire and dandelion, contain significant amounts of folic acid, particularly beneficial for pregnant women to enhance brain development.

Ms. Amoako shared her insights during the weekly “Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility!” event organized by the Ghana News Agency’s Tema Regional Office.

This initiative aims to foster health-related communication and offer a platform for disseminating health information, ultimately improving health literacy and personal health choices.

Discussing “Paediatric Nutrition,” Ms. Amoako recommended the consumption of fruits like oranges, pawpaws, sweet potatoes, and palm oil, all rich in vitamin A, to maintain clear eyesight for both the mother and child during pregnancy.

She also highlighted the importance of iron supplements in child development when taken during pregnancy.

“The four-star diet, when consumed, helps the body fight diseases and keeps the body fit.

“Parents with newly born babies should bring them out for the early morning sun, which provides vitamin D and also aids in the identification of the child’s eyes if any changes occur,” she advised.

Ms. Amoako advised that pregnant women follow a four-star diet, which includes staples, legumes and seed foods, fruits and vegetables, and animal sources.

This balanced diet is beneficial during pregnancy and after delivery, supporting disease resistance and overall fitness.

Folic acid supplements, along with iron supplements during the antenatal stage, are essential to prevent deficiencies in the developing baby.

She stressed that each nutritional component in our meals plays a vital role in the body’s immunization and development.

Additionally, Ms. Amoako recommended exposing newborns to early morning sunlight, as it provides vitamin D and aids in identifying any changes in the child’s eyes.

  • Akufo-Addo’s appointees involved in galamsey will be dealt with should we come to power – NDC

Akufo-Addo’s appointees involved in galamsey will be dealt with should we come to power – NDC

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a stern warning that it will deal with officials of the Akufo-Addo government allegedly involved in illegal mining should there be a change of power in the 2024 elections.

Expressing deep concern about the devastating impact of illegal mining on the present and future generations, the NDC is demanding an immediate halt to such activities.

During a press conference as part of its ‘Moment of Truth Series’ on Monday, October 16, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, cautioned those implicated in the illegal mining issue to prepare for accountability.

“We hereby serve notice, that even if they are left off the hook today, they will not escape the long arms of the law tomorrow, because crime has no expiry date.”

“Until this is done, we shall make no headway in our fight against illegal mining and our beloved country, will have no sustainable future”.

“Like many environmentalists and patriotic voices, the NDC is deeply worried and appalled by the extent to which President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia have gone to encourage and condone the destruction of Ghana’s environment”.

“They have been active collaborators and promoters of the ‘galamsey trade’.  Their actions through their Attorney-General to continuously protect corrupt officials of the ruling NPP and the government, speak loudly. Posterity will never forgive them,” he said.

Mr. Gyamfi, however, laid the blame for the widespread destruction caused by illegal mining on President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He contended that the two are actively involved in and supportive of the illegal mining trade, which explains the lack of action to combat it.

“Like many environmentalists and patriotic voices, the NDC is deeply concerned and appalled by the extent to which President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia have gone to encourage and condone the destruction of Ghana’s environment.”

“They have been active collaborators and promoters of the ‘galamsey trade.’ Their actions, through their Attorney-General, to continuously shield corrupt officials of the ruling NPP and the government, speak volumes. Posterity will never forgive them,” he remarked.

Furthermore, the party is demanding the immediate resignation of the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, accusing him of attempting to conceal serious crimes committed by corrupt government and NPP officials involved in illegal mining.

“The NDC hereby demands the immediate resignation of the Attorney-General for his dubious attempt to cover up serious crimes that have been perpetrated against the state by corrupt government and NPP officials who are destroying our water bodies and forests through illegal mining.”

This demand comes after the Attorney General advised that former Environment Minister, Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s allegations in his report on illegal mining activities lacked substance. Mr. Dame emphasized that there was no evidence to prosecute individuals named in the report.

Prof. Frimpong Boateng had identified some high-ranking government officials as complicit in the illegal mining problem, even reaching as far as the Jubilee House, the seat of government. He also alleged that the claims of some 500 missing excavators seized from illegal miners in 2020 were fabricated by certain government figures to discredit him.

Since his revelations, calls for accountability from government officials and individuals involved in illegal mining have increased. However, Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame has advised against giving much attention to the 36-page report authored by Prof. Frimpong Boateng titled “Report on the work of IMCIM so far and the way forward.”
