Video: Kennedy Agyapong’s daughters tell NPP “no Ken, no vote”

Four daughters of Kennedy Agyapong, a flagbearer aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have rallied behind their father and joined his campaign.

Kennedy Agyapong, who currently serves as a lawmaker for the Assin North constituency, is vying for the NPP’s top leadership position.

In a brief video shared on social media, these daughters passionately advocate for their father’s candidacy, presenting compelling reasons for why he would be an excellent public servant for the people of Ghana.

They highlight how he has successfully nurtured and raised them, emphasizing their belief that he can transfer these invaluable leadership qualities to his governance.

In the video, one of the daughters expresses her gratitude, saying “hello everyone, first of all, thank you all for taking time off to support our dad, we all just want you to know things about him,” one of them is captured saying.

“Aside from the fact that he is a great father, he has done a great job raising us, so, if he could raise a family, a village of his own, imagine what he can do for the country of Ghana.

Another daughter chimes in, “Furthermore, he is not just a politician, but a representative of the core values of Ghana. He envisions being a president who represents the interests of the 99% and not just the privileged 1%.”

They collectively declare, “No Ken, no vote! No Ken, no vote!” amidst a chorus of cheers, underscoring their unwavering support for their father’s campaign.

Kennedy Agyapong recently conducted the third edition of his campaign walk in the Western Region. During this event, he continued to critique the government and his primary opponent in the NPP primaries scheduled for November 4.

Agyapong is set to compete for the NPP’s flagbearer position against three other contenders, including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Francis Addai-Nimoh.

The NPP has scheduled November 4, 2023, as the date to elect the successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the party’s leader.

AfCFTA gains support as 14 African commodity exchanges join forces

14 commodity exchanges across the African continent have united their efforts under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), marking a significant milestone for the AfCFTA initiative.

The newly-formed AfCFTA Association of Commodities Exchanges (ACX) aims to collaborate on ensuring food security and enhancing market efficiency through knowledge sharing and best practices.

They intend to promote modern trading methods, electronic trading platforms, standardized contracts, and improved market information to reduce transaction costs and attract greater participation from domestic and international traders.

Additionally, the ACX seeks to engage with relevant stakeholders, including government agencies and industry experts, to raise awareness about the role of commodity exchanges in price discovery, risk mitigation, and market access.

This advocacy is vital for driving policy reforms that facilitate the growth of efficient and transparent commodity trading platforms across the region.

Notably, the formalized commodity trading space in most AfCFTA markets is still in its early stages, with South Africa being an exception.

The initiative is led by the Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) and focuses on facilitating cross-border trade. ACX plans to collaborate with AfCFTA to harmonize trade regulations, simplify customs procedures, and expedite cross-border transactions.

During the “Maiden Forum: AfCFTA Association of Commodities Exchanges” event in Accra, the CEO of GCX, Tucci Ivowi, emphasized the importance of African commodity exchanges working together to contribute to the realization of a unified African market.

The goal is to ensure food security across the region and provide essential commodities to meet the continent’s needs.

The ACX operates under the AfCFTA’s Guided Trade Initiative, which aims to match countries and products. By pooling resources and expertise, the African Commodity Exchanges intend to open up opportunities for cross-border commodity trading within the free trade area.

While each country has its unique characteristics and commodities, the possibility of a common African commodity exchange is considered, especially because these exchanges operate electronic platforms that can be interlinked, allowing for easy trade among themselves.

One of the common challenges faced by commodity exchanges across Africa is liquidity constraints. Building liquidity is a crucial aspect of commodity exchange development, and overcoming this challenge will require time, large buyers and sellers, policy initiatives, and collaboration with financial institutions.

South Africa is the exception with a well-established commodity exchange, while the rest of the exchanges on the continent are in nascent stages. However, the ACX’s collaborative efforts aim to accelerate progress and contribute to regional economic growth.

BoG Governor calls for enhanced multilateral approach to debt eesolution

The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, has stressed the necessity of boosting multilateral coordination and regulatory efficiency to effectively manage sovereign debt issues in low-income countries (LICs).

He proposed the establishment of a robust Global Sovereign Debt Roundtable (GSDR) to address this need.

During the IMF-African Caucus Meeting at the World Bank/IMF Meetings in Marrakech, Morocco, Dr. Addison underscored the significance of this initiative.

“We call for a carefully designed debt resolution mechanism, especially for vulnerable members with large domestic creditors – such as Ghana, to help avert domestic financial market instability,” Dr. Addison stated in his address to attendees at the conference.

He emphasized the need for a well-designed debt resolution mechanism, especially for vulnerable members with substantial domestic creditors, such as Ghana, to mitigate the risk of domestic financial market instability.

Additionally, he highlighted the need to enhance the G20 Common Framework (CF) to ensure a more timely, orderly, equitable, inclusive, and transparent debt restructuring process for distressed members in the region, including countries like Ghana, Ethiopia, and Malawi.

Given the acute debt challenges faced by African economies, worsened by factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ukraine conflict, tightening global financing conditions, and climate-related disasters, Dr. Addison urged the IMF to provide crucial support to vulnerable African economies.

He suggested that the IMF should adapt its lending toolkits to changing global conditions and align PRGT access thresholds with those of the GRA to facilitate uniform treatment and easier access to adequate Fund support for vulnerable members.

Dr. Addison also stressed the importance of securing additional pledges from willing donors to close resource gaps in PRGT, reinforcing the IMF’s finances while protecting the quota share of vulnerable members.

He emphasized the need for tailored capacity development and surveillance support from the Fund, in collaboration with international partners, to address member-specific challenges and restore public debt sustainability.

These recommendations are presented at a critical juncture when over half of sub-Saharan African (SSA) members face high debt distress risk, and the region’s economic growth is projected to further decelerate in 2023.

Dr. Addison’s proposals aim to offer immediate relief to struggling economies and foster inclusive and sustainable growth in the region.

The call for a stronger GSDR and enhanced cooperation between the IMF, MDBs, and RDBs underscores the urgency of addressing global economic challenges affecting low-income countries.

DIABOOST is not a diabetes cure – FDA to public

The Food and Drug Authority (FDA) has issued a stern warning to the public concerning the usage of DIABOOST.

The product, according to the Authority, is not registered with the FDA, is being advertised as a remedy for diabetes and a way to normalize blood sugar levels, primarily on social media platforms.

In an official statement released on Friday, the FDA debunked these claims, highlighting that DIABOOST is, in fact, categorized as a dietary supplement and not a medicinal remedy.

“These claims are false. The product is in fact labelled as a food supplement, not a medication and thus cannot be used in the treatment of diabetes,” the FDA stated, adding that “DIABOOST is not registered by the FDA. For this reason, its efficacy, quality, and most importantly, safety for diabetics cannot be guaranteed by the Authority,” it added.

The FDA has also revealed that DIABOOST is manufactured in Bulgaria for SPB Realty LTD and distributed in Ghana by 36TY Courier Service, with ongoing police investigations involving Mary Alimena.

In response to concerns over the product DIABOOST, the FDA has advised individuals with diabetes to adhere to treatments prescribed by healthcare professionals and explore discussions about alternative treatments to prevent potential complications.

The FDA has urged those with the product to discontinue its use and return it to the nearest FDA office or supplier.

Additionally, the public is encouraged to check the registration status of regulated products on the FDA website before purchase to ensure safety.

” DIABOOST is manufactured in Bulgaria for SPB, Realty LTD, 1 HAN ASPARUH STR, BURGAS, BULGARIA and distributed in Ghana by 36TY Courier Service, headed by MS. Mary Alimena, who is currently assisting the Police with the investigation.

“The FDA is by this notice asking all persons who have the product to stop using them immediately and return them to the nearest FDA office or to the supplier. The Authority wishes to encourage the public to check the registration status of all regulated products from the FDA website, www.fdaghana.gov.gh and the Proper platform (https.//bit.ly?ProPerFDA-Verify) before purchase in order to avoid harm,” it added.

Diabetes is a chronic medical condition marked by high blood glucose levels, resulting from insufficient insulin production or ineffective insulin utilization in the body.

Three primary types of diabetes include Type 1, an autoimmune disease requiring insulin therapy; Type 2, often linked to lifestyle factors like diet and physical activity; and Gestational Diabetes, occurring during pregnancy.

Diabetes often manifests with symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, and slow wound healing. When left unmanaged, diabetes can give rise to serious complications. Therefore, it is advised that patients adopt comprehensive treatment plan that incorporates lifestyle modifications, medication, and, in some cases, insulin therapy.

These treatment strategies should be undertaken under the guidance and supervision of healthcare professionals to ensure the maintenance of good health and the prevention of diabetes-related complications.

Cecilia Dapaah did not threaten me; she was very nice – Martin Kpebu

A private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has denied allegations of a confrontation with former Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah, in relation to the seizure of her assets by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Cecilia Dapaah on Wednesday, October 11, sought the assistance of the private legal practitioner, after the High Court considered arguments to expedite the confirmation of freezing and seizure orders related to her case.

Cecilia Dapaah was captured in a series of photos shared by the Legal Platform portal engaging with Lawyer Martin Kpebu.

In one particular photograph, the former Minister is seen pointing her left hand toward the prominent anti-corruption advocate.

Martin Kpebu was present in Financial Court 2 to represent his client in a separate case while the proceedings for Cecilia Dapaah’s case were underway.

Consistently, the outspoken lawyer has supported the OSP’s decision to investigate Dapaah, seize money discovered at her residence, and freeze her bank accounts due to suspicions of illicit activities.

In response to these assertions, Cecilia Dapaah, seemingly affected by the remarks, reportedly accused Martin Kpebu of making unfair and biased statements.

However, speaking to the media Mr. Kpebu refuted these claims, stating that Madam Dapaah was polite during their interaction.

He clarified that Madam Dapaah merely inquired about the “commentaries I have been running.”

“It’s normal, I owe no grudges against Cecilia Dapaah, to be very honest with you, considering what she is going through, I can understand so I am not bothered about the picture that has gone viral. Considering what she is going through, as against the conversation we had, she was very cordial. She was a bit very polite. She didn’t threaten me, polite is a better word. No, she wasn’t fighting me,” he added.

Mr. Kpebu asserted that he has the right to engage in public discourse and has, thus far, made statements grounded in available facts.
He stated, “We comment based on the facts and we use the law, you know, public interest. We have to do it. It is part of our job as citizens. We have to contribute to the public debate and all that. That was what she was asking about. I said yes, Madam, it is part of our job, and I will continue.”

  • Power at Tain Government Hospital disconnected over unsettled debts

Power at Tain Government Hospital disconnected over unsettled debts

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has taken a stern measure against the Tain Government Hospital by disconnecting its power supply due to an accumulated debt.

The disconnection occurred on Friday after an inconclusive meeting between the hospital’s management and stakeholders, including the District Chief Executive (DCE).

Speaking to the media, a medical officer at the hospital, Dr. Emmanuel Taah, expressed concern that this disconnection would disrupt their operations, as there is no alternative power source.

He mentioned that although the hospital’s management has made partial payments on the debt, the VRA insisted it was insufficient, leading to the disconnection.

Dr. Taah pointed out that the Bono Regional Minister, Justina Owusu-Banahene, and other stakeholders are aware of the situation. He appealed to the Ministry of Health to intervene and request the VRA to restore power to the hospital.

The Tain District Hospital, valued at $36.6 million, was inaugurated by President Akufo-Addo in November 2020.

This 60-bed facility serves over 10,000 people in Tain and nearby areas, featuring four operating theaters with various specialties, a well-equipped radiology department, and a laboratory.

It is also intended to function as a referral center for cases from less sophisticated healthcare facilities in the region. Dr. Taah cautioned that the hospital could face closure if power is not reinstated promptly.

  • Discontinuing COVID-19 levy could have future implications on economy – Tax expert to govt

Discontinuing COVID-19 levy could have future implications on economy – Tax expert to govt

Tax expert and consultant, Abdallah Ali-Nakyea, has cautioned the government against discontinuing the collection of the COVID-19 levy, emphasizing that ending such taxes without an alternative revenue source may result in the introduction of additional taxes, thereby increasing the financial burden on citizens.

Speaking at the recent Vodafone Business Runway in Accra, Ali-Nakyea expressed his belief that scrapping the COVID-19 levy might not be the best approach, citing the previous elimination of 16 tax types that was followed by the introduction of new taxes.

“I have always held that it is not a tax I wish should be scrapped, reason is that remember when the government came into power, we all celebrated the scrapping of 16 tax types, today imagine the number of taxes coming back, so it shows it wasn’t the right approach in the first place,” he added.

He recommended a gradual phasing out of the levy, addressing challenges in the health sector, and changing its name to reflect broader healthcare needs.

Ali-Nakyea stated that if the COVID-19 Levy were scrapped, it might necessitate the introduction of specific levies for healthcare services, like a dialysis levy to address the challenges faced by hospitals like Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

“We could have scrapped two, the following year two, gradually and so we would have been able to find other means. The reason I am saying this is that supposing we scrap COVID-19 Levy, today the challenges Korle Bu Teaching Hospital is having with dialysis, are we going to introduce dialysis levy?” he said.

He added, “So, I think the name given to it might have been the cause of the problem, we really have a lot of problems in the health sector, any revenue should be channeled to solve them.”

The COVID-19 levy, set at 1%, was implemented by the government during the height of the pandemic to offer financial support for combating the virus and its repercussions.

  • Mahama calls for swift relief efforts for communities affected by Akosombo Dam spillage

Mahama calls for swift relief efforts for communities affected by Akosombo Dam spillage

Former President and NDC’s 2024 flagbearer, John Mahama, has urged the Volta River Authority (VRA) to expedite support for residents in communities along the Volta River affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage.

Communities in the North, South, and Central Tongu districts of the Volta Region have been forced to evacuate due to the flooding caused by the dam spillage. This situation has left them with no choice but to salvage their remaining belongings.

Mr. Mahama visited parts of Sogakope and Sokpoe on Friday to assess the impact of the spillage and meet with the affected communities and facilities.

The situation is dire, with Comboni Hospital staff evacuating their quarters and seeking shelter under a pavilion. Patients have also been discharged, with only ten in critical condition remaining. If the water levels do not recede soon, they, too, may have to be discharged.

“It’s heartbreaking that we may have to let go of these patients,” a nurse said. “But if things don’t get better, we won’t have any other choice.”

The former President urged the VRA to swiftly deliver the promised relief efforts to the affected communities following his visit and interactions with residents, management, and staff of the Comboni hospital.

He emphasized, “This is about people’s lives. I will thank the VRA and appeal to them to expedite their efforts because the people are in need. We must help them cope with the situation.”

Mr. Mahama expressed his disappointment that the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has been unable to assist the affected communities due to a lack of relief items.

He also noted that the spillage was caused by large inflows from above the dam due to heavy rains in the northern parts of the country. He advised the VRA to consider desilting the river to allow for faster water flow.

“If you don’t spill, it is possible that the dam can give way, and that will be more catastrophic, especially in southern Volta. But we must dredge so that the extra volumes of water can flow faster. For example, under the Volta Bridge is silted. If it is desilted, the water will flow away faster.”

To emphasize the urgency of relief efforts and the impact of the situation on people, Mr. Mahama mentioned the possibility of the hospital asking families to collect the 300 dead bodies from the mortuary and find other places to accommodate them.

“If you don’t spill, it is possible that the dam can give way, and that will be more catastrophic, especially down the southern Volta. But we must dredge so that the extra volumes of water can flow faster. For example, under the Volta Bridge is silted. If it is de-silted, the water will flow away faster.”

Mr. Hesse’s journey with GhIPSS began when he assumed the role of General Manager in charge of Projects and Business Development shortly after its inception as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Bank of Ghana.

Over the years, he rose to the position of Chief Executive Officer, succeeding the company’s first CEO, Mr. Fred France.

As CEO, Mr. Hesse has overseen the remarkable transformation of GhIPSS, working closely with banks and non-bank financial institutions to introduce various electronic payment channels to the public.

He extended his gratitude to the dedicated staff, management, and board of GhIPSS for their unwavering support, noting, “Without a great team, this wouldn’t have been possible. So, I want to celebrate the staff, the management, and the board for their respective roles and particularly encourage the staff and management to aim to even exceed their current performance.”

  • NEDCo’s unfulfilled promise leaves Tamale residents in the dark again

NEDCo’s unfulfilled promise leaves Tamale residents in the dark again

Despite the Northern Electricity Distribution Company’s (NEDCO) pledge for a complete power supply restoration on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, residents in Tamale have once again found themselves in darkness.

The situation follows the management’s earlier assurance to address the issue, which had arisen due to growing concerns about a potential return to load shedding.

Throughout September and early October, residents had complained about frequent power outages.

On the evening of Thursday, October 12, 2023, power supply to the Tamale township was disrupted around 10 p.m., leaving residents without electricity until 9:20 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2023.

Before power was eventually restored, those who endured a night without electricity had to cope with additional interruptions on Friday morning.

Several residents expressed their frustration, urging NEDCo to identify a lasting solution to the problem.

William Paa Kwasi, who spoke to the media, lamented the damage caused to his refrigerator due to the inconsistent power supply in Tamale.

“You go to sleep and wake up to a power outage. Sometimes they don’t restore it after the maintenance works, and we experience repeated on-and-off electricity, which has a damaging impact on our gadgets.

“They should refrain from paying themselves hefty salaries and, instead, invest in improving service delivery,” he bemoaned.

My focus on patriotism, honesty will earn me votes – Kennedy Agyapong

A flagbearer aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has expressed his confidence in winning the party’s November 4 primaries.

Speaking to the media in Takoradi before his Showdown Walk event, Kennedy Agyapong called on his supporters to actively participate in the primaries, regardless of the outcome.

He emphasized the importance of patriotism, honesty, and discipline for Ghana’s rapid development.

He highlighted the need for Ghanaians to prioritize the welfare and interests of the country over personal gain.

Kennedy Agyapong further pointed out that dishonesty is a major problem in the country, causing economic challenges and hindering effective resource and business management.

He believes that addressing these issues is crucial for the development of Ghana.

“We need to be patriotic, honest, and disciplined to develop our country. People are not patriotic, we are greedy and selfish and don’t think about the welfare and the interest of the country at heart. Ghanaians think about themselves before the country and the moment you put yourself first, you defeat the purpose of development.”

“The level of dishonesty in this country is causing the economy to fail at all levels because foreigners have proven to us that we are not poor but because of dishonesty, we are not able to manage our resources and businesses and that is collapsing the country.”

  • 90-day visa waiver scheme between Ghana, South Africa to begin November 1

Beginning November 1, 2023, Ghana and South Africa will commence the implementation of a 90-day visa waiver program, which has been mutually agreed upon by both countries.

This visa waiver applies to individuals holding ordinary passports.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration on Friday, they conveyed this significant development:

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration wishes to inform the general public that the Republic of Ghana and the Republic of South Africa have entered into an agreement on a visa waiver regime for holders of ordinary passports.”

“The agreement will become effective on November 1, 2023,” as specified by the Ministry.

Under this arrangement, travelers can transit through, depart from, and stay in both countries for a combined period of up to ninety (90) days without the need for work permits.

  • Ofori-Atta, Amoako Atta should have been out of office by now – Dr Otchere

Ofori-Atta, Amoako Atta should have been out of office by now – Dr Otchere

A senior lecturer at Central University, Dr. Benjamin Otchere Ankrah, has expressed deep concern over the persistent incompetence displayed by some government appointees over the years.

Dr. Ankrah was taken aback by the fact that President Akufo-Addo has still not taken action to address the subpar performances of these officials.

During an interview with the media, the lecturer specializing in Corporate Governance specifically highlighted the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta and the Road Minister, Kwesi Amoako Atta as appointees whose reshuffles have been unduly delayed.

“He [Ken Ofori-Atta] should have been replaced long ago by the President. The Roads Minister (Kwesi Amoako Atta) shouldn’t be at post by now,” Dr. Benjamin Otchere Ankrah lamented .

He voiced his apprehension regarding the trajectory of Ghana’s development under the leadership of President Akufo-Addo.

Scores of Ghanaians have urged the President to dismiss the Minister from his role, citing the challenging state of the Ghanaian economy.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has emphasized that calls for the dismissal of the Finance Minister are unwarranted.

“I came to office in 2017 under a stringent IMF programme. This same man was able to manage the affairs of our economy in such a way that in my first term, we were one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.

“An average growth rate of 7% which allowed us to initiate programmes such as Planting for Food and Jobs. So somebody who has been able to do that. The current difficulties are not his fault. So how do I do it (sack him)? What will be the basis? What will be the rationale,” he added.

Addressing the media, President Akufo-Addo, expressed unwavering confidence in the Minister, who also happens to be his cousin.

He firmly asserted that Ofori-Atta should not be held accountable for the current economic challenges confronting the nation.

“If we were to say he didn’t do well in the first term, then why did I renominate him for my second term? So for me, their performance in my first time was excellent. Let me use that word. Excellent,” he added.

Odododiodio seat: Individuals who damaged NDC office must be sanctioned – Nii Lantey Vanderpuye to leadership

Member of Parliament (MP) for the Odododiodio constituency, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to take decisive action against those responsible for the chaos that erupted at the party’s Greater Accra regional office.

The NDC’s Greater Accra office was subjected to an attack by party members who claimed bias in the national leadership’s vetting process for parliamentary aspirants in the Odododiodio constituency.

During an interview with the media, Mr Vanderpuye revealed that he had called for an assessment of the damages caused by the agitators. He also emphasized the need for the party to hold the culprits accountable.

Mr Vanderpuye expressed that the enraged supporters had no valid justification for their unwarranted and unjustifiable actions, which should not go unpunished.

“I have had a meeting with the Regional Secretary, the Regional Treasurer, the Deputy Treasurer, and the Office Administrator and told them to evaluate the cost of the repairs that needed to be done, and we are also recommending to the party take drastic action against those that were caught on video engaging in that dastardly act.”

“They don’t have any legitimate reason for doing what they did because the party has legitimate channels by which you can seek redress if you are not happy with any process in the party and I don’t see why you should vent your anger on poor chairs and individuals who virtually have nothing to do with what is happening in Odododiodio and their reasons are totally unfair and unjustifiable,” he added.

Sanitation ministry denies receiving US$125M from World Bank

The Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Freda Prempeh, has denied reports suggesting that her ministry received $125 million from the World Bank.

These reports claimed that the funds were allocated for a five-year project aimed at training environmental inspectors to prosecute sanitation offenders.

In response, Minister Prempeh clarified that these reports misrepresented her ministry’s activities.

During the commissioning of 38 institutional toilet facilities in the Ashanti Region, she explained that the $125 million mentioned in the reports was actually the total budget for the ongoing four-year Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) Sanitation and Water project, which began in 2021.

She emphasized that the training of environmental prosecutors is just one component of this broader project, which spans four years.

“Recently, we saw a viral video, a publication going around indicating that the World Bank had given the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources $125 million.

“Let me put on record here that the World Bank has not dumped any money in my office as is being speculated around that 125 million has been given to the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources,” she said.

Minister Prempeh further clarified that the $125 million referred to a larger project with multiple components, but the entire amount had not been allocated to her ministry in one lump sum.

“Indeed, they have a project that together has about four components which sum up to $125 million which was started years ago, some being taken in Kumasi and some in Accra.

“And yet somebody somewhere decided to do his own story that $125 million had been given to the Minister of Sanitation. No such monies have been dumped in my office,” she stated.

  • Legal action against Ato Essien sets a precedent for corporate accountability – Financial Expert

Legal action against Ato Essien sets a precedent for corporate accountability – Financial Expert

The imprisonment of the Chief Executive Officer of the defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien, sends a strong message to corporate Ghana and the financial sector that wrongdoing will not go unpunished, according to the Director of Business Operations at Dalex Finance, Mr. Joe Jackson.

He also commended the effectiveness of the legal system in Ghana.

Mr. Jackson expressed his satisfaction, saying, “it is a really good thing not just for the financial sector but all of corporate Ghana. So in that sense showing out that our legal system works, showing that you can’t get away with the wrong thing., that is wonderful”.

However, he voiced concerns about the state’s inability to recover all the funds from Ato Essien before his imprisonment.

Despite reaching an agreement to refund GHC90 million to the state, Essien only managed to return GHC37 million, leading to the imposition of the custodial sentence.

Mr. Jackson highlighted the need to retrieve the misused funds, stating, “I am filled with sadness, the sadness is on two levels. Number one is that, more than a conviction we really need to get our money back. The public purse was raided to resolve this issue and if there is an establishment that funds have been misused, we have to get the money back and so the conviction just shows that we haven’t still been able to the money back. For me that is sad.

“The second level of sadness is this;  Capital Bank represented local indigenous ownership of our financial sector, nobody is going to grow this country or our financial sector for us, eventually Ghanains have to own it so that we can do the best for the country and not to ship the money out or ship the money in depending on where you stand.”

He also expressed a second level of sadness regarding the loss of Capital Bank, which represented local indigenous ownership in the country’s financial sector.

He emphasized the importance of Ghanaians owning and developing the financial sector for the benefit of the country.

Deputy Attorney-General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah explained that although Ato Essien has been incarcerated, the state managed to retrieve GHC37 million from him before the sentencing. He stated that if Essien had been imprisoned earlier, when the agreement to repay the money had not been reached, the state would not have recovered this sum.

Tuah-Yebuah added that the state would be looking into whether Essien could pay the remaining amount, but if he doesn’t, he will have to serve the 15-year prison term.

He said, “we were expecting that he would go by the agreement that we had but unfortunately on his part, he could not fulfill his part of the bargain. As we speak he has been able to pay close to about 37 million Cedis and because of his inability to pay the rest, per the agreement that we had, the court had the right to sentence him to a prison term and the court just did that.

“I am yet to get the full complement of the orders of the court, now that he has been imprisoned if he gets the money to pay that is another ballgame to look at because after a court has given its ruling or judgment the court becomes functus officio, so my expectation is that when he pays then he goes into mitigation when he wants to appeal the sentence.

“Let’s hope that he gets the money to pay. Let us also add that even if he is going to serve the 15 years Ghanaians have also benefited somehow because at least 37 million Cedis has been paid to the state. if he had been sentenced last year we wouldn’t have even recovered this.”

No one will be sworn in as president in 2025 – Eagle Prophet

The General Overseer of God’s Crown Chapel, Reindolph Oduro Gyebi, also known as ‘Eagle Prophet,’ has once again predicted that Ghana will not inaugurate its elected president on January 7, 2025.

In 2022, he initially revealed that January 7, 2025, would not be the date for swearing in a new president.

“In 2024 we [Ghanaians] will vote and in 2025 we will swear in the president. Normally we swear them in on January 7 but in 2025 the president won’t be sworn in on January 7. He will be sworn in on a different date, that’s all I can say.” he said.

The religious leader has reiterated his prophecy this year, emphasizing that he does not foresee Ghana conducting the swearing-in ceremony on the specified date. Speaking to the media, he suggested that there might be misunderstandings.

Ghana is scheduled to hold presidential and parliamentary elections in 2024.

  • Only Akufo-Addo can save Ato Essien from spending 15 years in jail – Lawyer

Only Akufo-Addo can save Ato Essien from spending 15 years in jail – Lawyer

Lawyer Kweku Paintsil has disclosed that the convicted founder of the defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien, has only one potential avenue to avoid a jail term, which is through executive intervention by the President, Akufo-Addo.

Speaking to the media Mr Paintsil stated that the law offers the option to apply to set aside the judgment on specific grounds, such as fraud, deceit, incapacity, unsound mind, or any factor that could invalidate the agreement.

He explained that the agreement might hinge on the person not being of sound mind or being induced beyond what is evident on the surface.

Nevertheless, Mr Paintsil noted that these are narrow avenues that someone can use to challenge a court judgment.

“Of course, the only other option available to him is executive intervention by the President’s prerogative of mercy. The President has power without answering to anybody to decide to pardon anybody of any criminal offense.

“In Ghana, that is a very common path for highly exposed public individuals. The President has been using it, even though not frequently. But as a matter of law, these are the only two options open to Essien, nothing beyond that,” he added.

Paintsil clarified that a person who enters into a plea bargain admits liability, and once that admission is made, the court no longer has a duty to continue with the trial. Consequently, the person is convicted based on their plea.

Additionally, Paintsil highlighted that the law stipulates that once a person accepts a plea bargain, they forfeit the right to appeal the judgment because a plea bargain, like a consent judgment, cannot be set aside.

He also commented on the impact of Ato Essien’s conviction on the broader banking sector cleanup process, emphasizing its importance for the sector.

Paintsil pointed out that Ghana’s current economic crisis resulted from the government bailing out bank owners who were living extravagantly.

He questioned how these ill-gotten funds could be retrieved and emphasized the need to strengthen prosecution efforts to either recover the funds or hold the culprits accountable for their actions.

You frustrated Alan to leave but you now want him back – Former NPP MP to NPP

Former Member of Parliament for Obuasi East under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Edward Ennin, has voiced his disapproval of attempts to lure Alan Kyerematen back into the party.

The former trade minister had resigned from the NPP, announcing his candidacy as an independent candidate for the 2024 elections.

During an interview on Neat FM on October 10, 2023, the former MP accused specific party members of thwarting Alan and compelling him to leave the party.

Ennin alleged that there might have been a deliberate effort to undermine Alan within the NPP, assuming his departure would be inconsequential.

“And the things that they have done to Alan, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu and all of them, they knew what they were doing and I think it was a planned effort to frustrate the man just to leave the party, thinking that he was nobody and his absence wouldn’t affect anything.

“But now they have realized that his absence won’t help them but rather affects them… it is now a case of taking a certain decision without thinking about it, and now you want to use a different approach to reverse it.

“If they don’t take care, the next election will be one party versus an independent candidate who will go to a second round,”he said.

Alan Kyerematen officially severed ties with the party following his involvement in the super delegates’ elections. Kyerematen, a prominent figure within the NPP, found himself placed behind Kennedy Agyapong and vice president, Dr. Mahamudu in the election results.

He cited unfairness and alleged intimidation against his agents as reasons for his departure.

However, party leaders, including National Chairman Stephen Ntim and Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the Majority Leader, are eager to engage in discussions with Kyerematen to persuade him to reconsider his decision and return to the NPP.

Soldier facing multiple fraud charges reportedly takes his life

On Friday, October 13, 2023, a soldier reportedly took his own life at the 48 Engineer Regiment in Accra.

The lifeless body of Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Sapak Dickson was discovered hanging from an electrical cable in the Unit’s guard room.

This information was provided by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in a statement released on Friday, October 13, 2023.

The GAF stated, “preliminary investigative report indicates that the soldier who was under investigations for several cases of fraud was placed in close custody on Wednesday 11 October 2023 at about 1930 hours on a report to the Regiment for defrauding a Defence Civilian Staff.”

“A team from the Ghana Military Police and a CID personnel from Teshie Divisional Police Headquarters were dispatched to the scene for investigations.”

The GAF mentioned that the deceased soldier’s body had been transported to the 37 Military Hospital mortuary.

“GAF takes this opportunity to extend its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, friends, and loved ones of the deceased soldier,” they added.

  • Alan won’t secure more than 2% in 2024 elections – Ben Ephson

Alan won’t secure more than 2% in 2024 elections – Ben Ephson

Pollster Ben Ephson has delivered a pessimistic assessment of the chances of independent presidential candidate, Alan Kyerematen receiving more than 2% of the total votes in the 2024 elections.

Mr Ephson believes that despite Mr. Kyerematen’s aspirations to form a youth-dominated cabinet, his presidential dreams are improbable, given historical precedents and the current political landscape.

“Alan has never campaigned for elective office, like he would not have said that 60% of his cabinet will be youth. Meaning that he will beat Mahama and if Bawumia wins he will beat them at the general elections and be sworn in as president to form his cabinet.

“If Alan gets 2%, he would’ve done very well. Because since 1992, apart from NDC and NPP candidates only one person has been able to gain 1% and that was in 2000 when Goosie Tanoh formed the Reform Party.

“The reason he had the 1% was because in 2000 he had very good parliamentary candidates. Here is the case that all independent candidates who have contested without parliamentary candidates have only managed about 0.2%,” he stated.

Mr Ephson pointed out that since 1992, apart from candidates from the NDC and NPP, only one person, Goosie Tanoh in 2000, was able to secure 1% of the vote due to strong parliamentary candidates.

He further emphasized that independent candidates who have contested without parliamentary candidates have typically received around 0.2% of the vote.

Alan Kyerematen, a former candidate in the NPP’s flagbearer election, recently announced his resignation from the party and his intention to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

His decision was motivated by alleged threats and intimidation directed at him and his supporters, which he attributed to a strategy by party and government officials to favor a specific candidate.

The NPP is set to select its flagbearer on November 4, with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Francis Addai Nimoh, and Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto among the candidates.

I am not happy with Alan’s exit from NPP – Dr Akoto

A prospective flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has expressed disappointment regarding the resignation of former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen.

Mr. Kyerematen officially left the NPP on September 25, intending to run as an independent presidential candidate in the 2024 elections.

He cited the NPP’s alleged bias in favor of one candidate and reported intimidation of his supporters during the super delegates conference on August 26, 2023, as reasons for his departure.

Discussing this development with the media, the former Agriculture Minister emphasized the significance of numbers in politics, emphasizing that every party member’s contribution matters.

“We are in politics, and politics is about numbers. It doesn’t matter the stature of the person. It’s just unfortunate,” the former Agriculture Minister lamented.

Nonetheless, Dr. Akoto remains optimistic about the NPP’s chances in the 2024 general elections, stating, “We need every soul to break the eight next year. I am confident that we will break the eight.”

The tweet was accompanied by a video showing the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central donating various PPE items, including face masks, during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic at the 37 Military Hospital.

In an interview following the donation, he expressed his intention to extend his contributions to prominent hospitals in Kumasi, Ho, Accra, and other regions in the near future.

According to a report by JoyNews, data obtained through a Right to Information request revealed that Frontier Healthcare Services received $87.5 million from its testing services at the airport, comprising $84 million from arrival testing and $3.5 million from departure testing.

In contrast, the government of Ghana earned $6 million from arrival testing and $180,000 from departure testing during the same period.

The data from the Airport Company indicated that Frontier Healthcare Services claimed the majority of revenue from COVID-19 testing, comprising 92% of income from arrival testing and 94% of income from departure testing, while the government’s share represented less than 10% of the total revenue, with 7% from arrival testing and 6% from departure testing.

NRSA introduces GHS240 spot fine for road traffic offenders

National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has introduced on-the-spot fines for road traffic infractions, with fines ranging from GH¢120 to GH¢240, while more serious violations will be directed to the courts for legal action.

These violations will be identified using an artificial intelligence system called “Traffitech-Gh,” developed through a collaboration between the Ghana Police Service (GPS) and the National Road Safety Commission.

These devices equipped with sensors for automatic offense detection, in both picture and video formats, will be installed on major roads, roundabouts, traffic lights, and strategic locations.

To introduce this initiative, a stakeholder engagement session was conducted in Ho, involving participants from various public and private organizations in the Volta and Oti regions.

Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, from the National Police Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD), highlighted that this initiative aims to address road safety challenges, enhance enforcement, and provide a means for the Ghana Police Service to gather evidence in an automated, efficient, and acceptable manner for law enforcement and alleged perpetrators.

Collaborating with the Ghana Road Safety Authority, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), and the National Insurance Commission, this program is themed “Police Invisible Eyes Are Watching (PIEAW).”

Chief Superintendent Obeng called on the public to take note of this development and comply with traffic rules and regulations.

  • COPEC forecasts minor reduction in fuel prices starting October 16

COPEC forecasts minor reduction in fuel prices starting October 16

Fuel prices are expected to decrease nationwide starting from Monday, October 16, 2023, according to the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC).

On Friday, October 13 2023, the Executive Secretary of COPEC, Duncan Amoah, issued a statement attributing the anticipated fuel price reduction to a significant drop in international product prices and the apparent strengthening of the cedi against the US dollar.

As of now, the average price of petrol in Ghana is GH¢12.63 per liter, while diesel is priced at GH¢13.40 per liter.

COPEC predicted that petrol prices may fall to GH¢12.098 per liter, and diesel prices could drop to GH¢12.694 per liter during the second pricing window of October, beginning Monday, October 16, 2023.

“The second pricing window for the month of October under the National Petroleum Authority’s price deregulation programme on petroleum pricing is set to commence from Monday the 16th of October.”

“Indications of prices based on international price movements and the forex performance over the past forthright points to some marginal reductions across pumps for the coming window as confirmed by CBOD petroleum pricing outlook for the window,” COPEC stated.

Meanwhile, the Authority has called upon the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to formulate a comprehensive foreign exchange policy aimed at addressing the persistent surge in petroleum prices within the country.

This appeal from COPEC comes in the wake of a recent upswing in petroleum prices observed at fuel stations during the second pricing window, which commenced on August 1, 2023.

Currently, several major Oil Marketing Companies are vending diesel XP and Super XP at GH¢12.95 each, an increase from the previous price of GH¢12.45.

In an interview with the media,  the Executive Secretary of COPEC, Mr. Duncan Amoah, clarified that these price hikes can be attributed to the escalating petroleum costs in the global market.

To ensure pricing stability in the country, he underscored the necessity for the central bank to establish a clear foreign exchange policy that can fortify the value of the Ghanaian Cedi.

Anticipating potential oil price hikes in the latter half of the year, COPEC urged the Bank of Ghana to take proactive measures in effectively managing currency fluctuations.

Mr. Amoah also cautioned that if the combination of escalating global oil prices and currency instability persists in the latter half of the year, the prices of petroleum at the pumps could witness significant increases.

Address lack of developmental project in Dasomiadwene – Residents to govt

Residents of Dasomiadwene, a small community in the Ashanti Region, have expressed concerns over the lack of development in the area.

Speaking to the media they cited issues such as poor roads, inadequate drinking water, lack of telecommunication network, and the absence of a health center as major challenges affecting their community.

These problems have made daily life difficult for the residents. They mentioned that the only means of transport to other communities is by motorbike, and cars are a rare sight except on market days.

The residents expressed disappointment with the government, alleging that they only receive extravagant promises during elections, which are not fulfilled afterward.

“You just saw how narrow and dilapidated our road is when you were coming. Even motorbikes find it difficult to use the road”, a resident said.

They also called on their Member of Parliament, T.K Hammond, to address these issues and improve the community’s infrastructure.

In their complaints, the residents mentioned the dangerous state of the road, which poses risks to pregnant women traveling for antenatal care.

They emphasized the need for better telecommunications infrastructure, as their current network is extremely poor, forcing them to stand near specific trees to make calls.

Moreover, the absence of a health center in the community forces them to seek medical care in other towns. The poor network situation has led to teachers fleeing the community, affecting the education of local children.

Despite their efforts to address these problems, the community is still struggling to get them resolved. The residents called on authorities to intervene and improve their living conditions.

Gyaasehene of the community, Nana Tawia Mensah, expressed concern over teachers leaving due to the poor network and called on authorities to address the issues.

He thanked the MP and authorities for installing a network pole but urged them to fix it and improve the road infrastructure in the community.

Prioritize workplace mental health policies – Doctor to employers

Employers in Ghana have been urged to implement mental health policies in the workplace to prioritize the wellbeing of their employees.

World Mental Health Day shed light on the growing prevalence of mental health issues in the workplace.

Data from the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Special Initiative for Mental Health Situational Assessment in Ghana showed that 6.34% of young people aged 20-29 are dealing with depression, with higher figures among retirees and those aged 70 and above.

During a virtual event organized by MentaPulse Africa themed “Safeguarding Employee Mental Health in Ghana,” Dr. Richmond Adusa-Poku, President of Pharmacists in Mental Health, Ghana (PMHGH), emphasized the importance of having mental health policies at every workplace.

These policies should inform employees about reporting channels for mental health concerns, similar to how sexual harassment incidents are reported.

Dr. Adusa-Poku stressed the necessity of providing mental health training during onboarding to help employees identify mental health triggers and know how to handle them.

Manuel Koranteng, Executive Director of MentaPulse Africa, emphasized the need for organizations to restructure their work environments to mitigate psychosocial hazards like long unhealthy working hours, heavy workloads, and a culture of abuse and discrimination.

These changes are crucial to protect employees from adverse mental health conditions.

“Every employee must receive training on mental health first aid. The modules may be provided by the specialists but the aim is to arm them with the skills to identify when they or their colleagues are having mental health incidents to provide immediate support or refer to the appropriate authorities,” he added.

“We must reshape the work environment to reduce psychosocial hazards such as long unhealthy working hours, heavy workloads, culture of abuse and discrimination, etc to protect workers from experiencing adverse mental health conditions,” he said.

J.B Danquah’s case: Murder trial of alleged killer halted due to absence of juror

The trial of Daniel Asiedu, also known as Sexy Dodon, for his alleged involvement in the murder of former Abuakwa North Member of Parliament, J. B Danquah Adu, was halted due to the absence of a juror.

The court was informed that one of the seven-member jury members had recently given birth and was not present.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Lydia Osei Marfo, stated that attempts were made to contact the absent juror, but she did not respond to calls.

The judge said, later: “I called her to give me a date which she believes she can join the trial. From my engagement with her which lasted for about 15 minutes, she was unable to tell me when she can come to court.”

After a direct conversation with the juror, she mentioned that she needed three months of recovery, as advised by her doctor, even though she had a normal delivery.

Given these circumstances, the court had no choice but to adjourn the trial to November 7, 2023. Daniel Asiedu faces charges of murder and robbery, while his accomplice, Vincent Bossu, is charged with conspiracy to rob.

Both defendants have pleaded not guilty and remain in prison custody, accused of their alleged involvement in the murder of the former Member of Parliament at his residence in Shiashie in 2016.

Students to be dismissed due to low grades can reapply again – UG

Students at the University of Ghana (UG) who face withdrawal due to a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) below 1.00 have the opportunity to reapply for admission to the institution to pursue alternative courses.

They can opt for different programs using their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results in addition to the courses they were initially enrolled in, though they would need to begin from Level 100.

This was revealed by the Director of Public Affairs at the University of Ghana, Dr. Elizier T. Ameyaw-Buronyah in an interview with the media.

“They are at liberty to reapply and the reapplication should be with their WASSCE results. They can apply to other programmes and not necessarily to what they were undertaking before they were withdrawn. They can apply for other programmes, once they qualify with their WASSCE results,” she added.

The University of Ghana issued a notice on October 6, 2023, announcing the withdrawal of students with a CGPA below 1.00 in the Colleges of Basic and Applied Sciences, Education and Humanities, effective for the 2023/2024 academic year.

This decision aligns with Section 9.26 of the University Regulations for Junior Members (2017), which stipulates that undergraduate students failing to meet the minimum CGPA for progression to the next level of study should be withdrawn from the university.

Students who meet the criteria for withdrawal will receive official notices from the university via their official UG email addresses. Those who have already paid their tuition fees for the 2023/2024 academic year can request a refund.

The university has extended an invitation to students who have questions or require support to contact the relevant College Academic Affairs Office. The aim of this decision is to encourage students to focus on improving their academic performance.

Dr. Ameyaw-Buronyah emphasized that the primary objective of a student’s time in school is to excel academically and that students should take their studies seriously to achieve good grades and succeed in their future endeavors.

2,000 families to be displaced in effort to preserve Weija Dam

More than 2,000 families in Gbawe Gonse, within the Weija Gbawe Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, are facing compulsory eviction due to a demolition order issued by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

Last Monday, several houses were marked with red paint and labeled “to be demolished by GWCL,” with the date October 9, 2023, indicated.

The markings were carried out by individuals suspected to be associated with the Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly and the GWCL, overseen by armed personnel in military uniforms.

Upon visiting the area, it was observed that houses, some located over 600 meters from the river and others on nearby hills, were marked for demolition.

This action has caused confusion among the residents, as there was no indication of when the demolitions would occur or any grace period for them to evacuate.

Mr. Asare, a long-term resident and a government appointee to the Weija Gbawe Municipal Assembly, appealed to the government to prevent the demolition and protect lives.

“The marking was done on October 9, 2023, and that was the date they wrote on all the buildings. This has left most of us confused because it doesn’t state when the demolition would be done or give us grace period to evacuate our buildings,” he added.

He emphasized the need for an engagement between the GWCL and the residents to find permanent solutions.

“We support any initiative to protect the water body but that must not involve the use of the military”, he stated.

The planned demolition has left homeowners and residents, including those in Agape Down, Agape Royal, and Ablekuma Joma, in a state of fear and uncertainty regarding the fate of their properties worth millions of Ghana cedis.

The previous demolition in Joma, a nearby community in the same municipality, occurred without prior notice or compensation to the victims.

This impending demolition would be the second in 12 years in the same area by the GWCL, following the demolition of over 500 houses in December 2011.

    One of the affected houses

During the first demolition, the GWCL cited encroachment of the Densu River buffer zone as the reason. However, the current demolition lacks clear reasons, especially as many marked houses are far from the buffer zone.

Residents expressed their distress, recalling the hardships endured after the first demolition.

They pleaded for government intervention and emphasized their citizenship and right to shelter.

During the visit, it was revealed that residents were just concluding a meeting to determine their next steps. Distressed residents, particularly women, appealed to the government for assistance.

They highlighted the services provided to the community, such as GPS addresses, property rates, and electricity supply, questioning the sudden demolition without addressing the existing injunction against it.

Residents also questioned the role of various government agencies that allowed land sales and construction after the first demolition over a decade ago.

When contacted, the GWCL’s Head of Communications, Stanley Martey, refrained from commenting on the matter, stating that the company was unaware of the demolition exercise.

This initiative involves drivers and commuters collaborating with the Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly.

Despite the fact that the Nkwanta-Kpassa road has been officially assigned to a contractor, it remains impassable due to its poor condition.

Frustrated drivers have reported multiple complaints about the road’s deplorable state, but these concerns have gone unaddressed.

The drivers have highlighted the numerous fatal accidents that have occurred as a result of the road’s potholes and the negative impact it has on productivity, particularly for heavy-duty vehicle drivers.

In response to these challenges, drivers, local residents, and the Municipal Assembly have decided to take action to repair the road, which they refer to as a “deathtrap.”

The Nkwanta South Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Bright Lenwah, has provided trucks and boulders to support the repair efforts.

While commending the communal spirit of the drivers and residents, he expressed his disappointment at the lack of response from the Roads Ministry, despite numerous reports, including those from Adom News.

He called upon the Roads and Highways Minister, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, to heed their plea and take immediate action to address the road’s condition, providing relief to drivers and commuters.

Odododiodio seat: NDC vetting session marred by violence

Violence erupted during the vetting process for parliamentary candidate aspirants of the Odododiodio constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Greater Accra Region on Friday, October 13, 2023.

One faction of candidates’ supporters damaged party assets, including chairs and an air conditioner, and threw stones at the vetting committee, accusing them of unfairness.

The incident unfolded at the regional party office in South La, where three individuals, namely Nii Okai Laryea, Kotey Ashie, and Michael Nii Yarboi Annang, were undergoing vetting, aspiring to succeed the incumbent MP, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye, who has opted not to seek re-election.

Earlier in February 2023, the Odododiodoo Constituency couldn’t partake in the vetting process due to unresolved internal issues within the party.

Today’s vetting aimed to determine the eligibility of the three aspirants for the party’s parliamentary primary scheduled for Tuesday, October 31, 2023.

In the midst of the chaos, one of the parliamentary candidate aspirants, Michael Nii Yarboi Anang, successfully completed the vetting process. Anang, a former Member of the New Patriotic Party, aspires to be the Parliamentary Candidate for the Odododiodoo Constituency under the NDC ticket.

Boxer Bukom Banku, a prominent supporter, expressed their endorsement of Anang, stating, “We love Mr. Anang and we want him to represent us in parliament. He serves and provides jobs for people in the community, contributing to the community’s welfare.”

Several of Anang’s supporters criticized the NDC national executives, alleging bias in the vetting process.

  • Tema: Any attempt to sell children’s playground will be resisted – Residents to TMA,TDC

Tema: Any attempt to sell children’s playground will be resisted – Residents to TMA,TDC

Residents in the Tema Region have stated that they are ready to oppose any efforts by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) and the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) to sell the Tema Library and Children’s Playground.

Speaking to the media, the concerned residents asserted that these vital community assets, which have faithfully served the area for over three decades, are purportedly being sold to a private developer for the construction of a shopping mall or casino.

Their opposition is rooted in the belief that the park should not be repurposed for commercial use. They have made a resolute pledge to stage protests and demonstrations until all ongoing work is brought to a complete halt.

A circulating online video reveals a site engineer overseeing the land’s clearance through the use of an excavator, resulting in heaps of sand and stones on the library’s premises. According to the local youth, the engineer informed them that the park had been sold, and he was overseeing the new development. They also noted the presence of four individuals in TDC Task Force uniforms supervising the activity.

During an interview the media, a member of the Tema Youth, Gideon Kodzo Tetteh, shared his perspective, “the library is running as we speak. They organize sessions for people. Two weeks ago, we went there and found sand and stones on the site. So we inquired, and they said some gentlemen brought them at dawn. And they are claiming ownership of the land.”

“And they said they are coming to start a development. I inquired to know who the gentlemen were and if they showed permits and where they came from. The following day, we were there when the guys came. I confronted them, and they said they had documents, which they showed to us. I saw TDC, TMA, and a few names.”

“I went to Tema West Assembly, and they said the place was sold a long time ago, even before they created Tema West Municipal Assembly. They told us to go to TDC, we went there, and they said they gave all government lands back to Tema West Assembly. It was a triangle of being tossed all over. I did my own checks and realized the arrangements started in 2012 under the leadership of then MCE Kemphis Ofosu-Ware, and approval was given in 2013. TDC hasn’t given any official communication yet.”

Tetteh further stated, “I visited the Tema West Assembly, and they informed me that the area had been sold long before the establishment of the Tema West Municipal Assembly. They suggested we contact TDC. When we did, they mentioned that they had handed over all government lands to the Tema West Assembly. It was a situation of being redirected back and forth. I conducted my own investigations and discovered that the planning process began in 2012 under the leadership of then MCE Kemphis Ofosu-Ware, with approval granted in 2013. To date, TDC has not provided any official communication.”

In response to these concerns, Ian Okwe, the Protocol and Administrative Officer at TDC, clarified that the library is situated within the Community 5 playing ground. He confirmed that the private developer has been directed to halt ongoing work.

He explained, “the library is part of Community 5 playing ground. There’s nowhere on our layout that there’s a land designated for the library. In the living space for the park, the library is part of the land used for that particular playground. The request came that TDC should release the playing ground to TMA for the construction of an ultra-modern playing ground.

“As it stands now, nobody has brought any drawings indicating that they are going to construct any casino or whatever there. Management’s attention has been brought to it, the Board chair of TDC went there, and ordered that they stop work,” he told sit-in host Nathen Quao.

The residents have made a call to the government to intervene and prevent the sale of the library and playground.

Vacant positions left by migrated nurses must be filled – College of Nurses and Midwives to govt

President of the Ghana College of Nurses and Midwives (GCNM), Professor Mrs. Victoria Bam, has made an urgent appeal to the government to address the critical shortage of healthcare professionals by filling the vacancies left by over 4,000 nurses who have emigrated in search of better opportunities.

She emphasized that this is necessary to prevent the burnout and stress that could be experienced by the healthcare workers who remain in the country.

This appeal was made during an interview conducted on the sidelines of the College’s 8th Annual General Meeting (AGM) and 4th Scientific Conference held in Gomoa Fetteh, Central region, under the theme “A decade of nursing and midwifery specialist education in Ghana: Innovation and high impact interventions towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).”

Professor Bam expressed her concern about the alarming rate of nurse emigration, attributing it to poor remuneration and inadequate conditions of service that require improvement.

She emphasized that improving conditions of service encompasses not only salary but also the ability to meet healthcare workers’ and their families’ health and educational needs to make progress in life.

She said: “When we talk about conditions of service it’s not only the salary, but to meet the health and educational needs of their families and be able to make progress in life.”

Additionally, Professor Bam highlighted the lack of essential resources in healthcare facilities and called on the government to provide the necessary resources to enable healthcare professionals to carry out their duties effectively.

Ms. Hannah Akua Oparebea Acquah, the Rector of GCNM, emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for professional growth through higher education as a means to motivate and retain healthcare professionals.

She said: “As a nurse, it is so frustrating when you know so well that you have the knowledge and skills to help a patient, but you lack basic resources to work.

“We have graduated nurses and midwives who are sitting at home. The more you use your skills, the more competent you become. We acknowledge the fact that there are financial challenges in the country, but the issue is that they are migrating and we need urgent action to curb the menace,” she added.

The former Registrar of the Nurses and Midwives Council, Reverend Mrs. Veronica Darko, stressed the importance of innovation, creativity, and commitment to improving healthcare for achieving Universal Health Coverage. She also expressed readiness to embrace emerging technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the healthcare system.

The Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyeman Manu, highlighted the positive impact of empowering nurses and midwives through specialization on Ghana’s progress towards achieving Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals.

He pledged the government’s support for the growth and development of the College and the recognition and remuneration of specialized nurses and midwives.

The conference served as a platform for networking, idea-sharing, and discussions on challenges, progress, and future projections in the field of healthcare.

It also marked the 10th anniversary of specialist nursing and midwifery training in Ghana, during which new members were inducted into the College.

Central Region: Wildlife officers crack down on bush meat at chop bars

Wildlife Division officers of the Forestry Commission in the Central region have initiated operations to confiscate a variety of bush meats from chop bar operators in the area.

During the operation, which occurred on Wednesday, the team confiscated more than 100 bush meats, including some that were stored in refrigerators.

Additionally, some of the meat was taken from bowls of soup on cooking fires and from customers who had already purchased and were consuming it.

The affected chop bar operators were located in the Awutu Senya West District, Gomoa East and West Districts, and the Effutu Municipality.

In interviews with Adom News, some operators expressed disappointment with the conduct of the wildlife officers.

They claimed that the officers entered their establishments carrying firearms and other intimidating weapons, causing fear and panic.

Ernestina Adumia Anning, the Public Relations Officer of the Wildlife Division, explained that the operation aimed to enforce the ban on hunting bush meat. She further indicated that the team would soon extend their efforts to the roadside to crack down on those selling bush meat to travelers.

Anning emphasized that the chop bar operators whose meat was confiscated would face legal processing and fines.

Furthermore, she advised the general public to refrain from consuming bush meat, as anyone found in violation of this ban would face arrest.

KATH Board holds meeting after GHS300,000 goes missing

The board members of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) are investigating the withdrawal of GH¢300,000 from its account, under unclear circumstances, as reported by The Chronicle newspaper.

According to the report, this total amount was withdrawn in three separate transactions at the Adum branch of Fidelity Bank. The board members of KATH are actively examining this concerning issue, along with other related matters.

The report additionally stated that an official document in their possession indicated that the first transaction occurred on July 4, 2023.

In the first transaction, an amount of GH¢100,000 was withdrawn from the hospital’s account, bearing details such as PV No. 035789 and drawn on Cheque No. 220588, in the name of the deputy director of the budget, yet cashed by an individual named Seth Adjei Appiah.

The stated purpose for this transaction was “being funds for preparation, compilation of documents for critical engagement with NHIA (National Health Insurance Authority).”

On the same day, another transaction involving GH¢80,000 was reported, again under the name of the deputy director of the budget, and withdrawn by Seth Adjei Appiah. The description for this withdrawal was “Being funds for preparation, compilation of documents.”

Lastly, a transaction amounting to GH¢120,000 took place on August 14, 2023, also issued by the deputy director of the budget, with the description, “Being funds released to arrange and facilitate a meeting with key leadership of health in Accra,” the report stated.

It is crucial to note that none of these withdrawals were authorized by the hospital’s board, according to The Chronicle.

The source in the newspaper conveyed, “KATH, like any other institution, has its budget line for its social and corporate responsibilities expenditures annually, and it is applied as approved by the Board and Parliament. These illicit withdrawals are even unknown to the Board.”

Moreover, the report clarified that some of the expenditures, allegedly part of the hospital’s social responsibility activities, were disclosed as sponsorship of sporting events, media courtesies, and other expenses that could not be officially documented as such.

Lastly, the report highlighted that neither the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Accra nor Kumasi was involved in any stakeholder meetings during the mentioned period, according to both the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) head office and its regional office in Kumasi.

In response to this situation, the board members of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital are convening a critical meeting to thoroughly investigate this matter.

Enhance your mental health by ensuring you have enough sleep – Psychiatrist advises

A psychiatric resident at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Edwin Frimpong-Boakye Yiadom, has emphasized the significance of giving proper attention to sleep as a crucial means of enhancing one’s mental well-being.

Speaking to the media, he indicated that adequate sleep is essential for maintaining an active and healthy body, while sleep deprivation can impair both mental and physical functioning.

Mr Yiadom highlighted that the amount of sleep required can vary from person to person.

He mentioned, “The first thing I will prescribe is sleep. The truth is that everybody requires enough sleep. Some people give a time frame, but it’s actually different per person. Some people will be fine with just three hours, and others may need 10 hours of sleep. You just have to know yourself. You will know how many hours of sleep your body needs.”

Furthermore, he established a direct connection between sleep and mental health, explaining that mental health issues can disrupt sleep patterns, and poor sleep can exacerbate mental health challenges. Scientific research has also linked sleep deprivation to physical ailments, including heart disease, diabetes, premature aging, and, in severe cases, road accidents leading to fatalities.

Dr. Yiadom strongly advocates for prioritizing adequate sleep as one of the fundamental remedies for preserving and enhancing mental health.

Additionally, he underscored the role of proper nutrition in maintaining and improving mental health. The psychiatrist highlights that the body’s nutritional intake significantly influences its functioning, affecting movement and the immune system. Therefore, maintaining a healthy diet is vital.

“The thing we are pushing the most now is encouraging people to seek help. This is because there are many people who have developed a number of things but, out of fear of being tagged as mad when they visit the psychiatric hospital, (they) shy away from seeking help. So just seek help, eat right, and sleep more,” he explained.

Yiadom acknowledges the stigma associated with seeking help for mental health issues and emphasizes the importance of overcoming this stigma. He encourages individuals to prioritize their mental health and seek assistance when needed, emphasizing that it can be life-saving.

He also recognizes the inevitability of stress in people’s lives and advises individuals to pay close attention to stress triggers and develop effective coping strategies for longevity and mental well-being.

Public eating has become a challenge due to my status – Mzbel

Ghanaian musician, Mzbel has opened up about the impact of her celebrity status on her personal life and the constraints it has placed on her in terms of activities she once enjoyed.

In an interview with Joy Prime , she revealed that her celebrity status has compelled her to conform to certain expectations to please the public and avoid criticism, which has left her feeling like her freedom has been restricted.

While Mzbel acknowledged the benefits of celebrity status, such as career opportunities and financial advantages, she also highlighted the challenges it brings.

“Sometimes it’s nice when people receive you well. Like when I went to the UK, people saw me and it felt good but then it felt weird too. At that point, I was happy. At the same time, I wish I was not Mzbel because then you want to feel free and eat and everybody is looking at you like they want to see how you do it. How does she take the spoon? How does she swallow? It’s weird. I can imagine.

“Sometimes you go into public and you want to use a bathroom and everybody is taking pictures with you. And you don’t want to use the bathroom because the people are wondering,”

She shared her experiences of being constantly scrutinized in public, where even simple actions like eating in a restaurant draw attention.

Mzbel also discussed the financial benefits of her celebrity status, as it has allowed her to build a successful business. Despite the advantages, she expressed a desire to have a more normal life, free from the constant spotlight and potential negative attention.

“I wish I was a normal person. I don’t enjoy fame. Nobody will say ‘I did that or I did this.’ People will not tell lies about me. People will not look for me and want to hurt me. But when you’re making the money, it’s nice. It’s nice. You hang out with somebody for a few minutes and it’s a lot of money,” she added.

She also highlighted the significant income disparities between celebrities and the average person, noting that even casual social outings can yield substantial earnings, but these benefits come at a price.

“I have a business and I know how much we pay people the whole month. But you will go hang out, just hang out, sit there as Mzbel and the money you are making is like 100 times what somebody is making a whole month. So it’s nice, but it comes with a price.”

The Accra High Court has set December 4, 2023, as the date for delivering its judgment in the case of En Huang, who is also recognized as Aisha Huang who was arrested for engaging in illegal mining activities.

During proceedings at the court, it was revealed that both the defense counsel and the prosecution had submitted their respective written addresses to the court for consideration.

Aisha Huang is currently facing charges related to her alleged involvement in illegal mining operations without the necessary licenses, her purported facilitation of individuals in engaging in unlawful mining activities, and her re-entry into Ghana following deportation. It is worth noting that Aisha Huang has vehemently denied these charges and is currently in custody.

The state’s argument revolves around the claim that the complainants in this case are security and intelligence officers. The prosecution has emphasized Aisha Huang’s “notoriety” in engaging in a series of small-scale mining activities commonly referred to as ‘galamsey’ throughout the country.Aisha was arrested for a similar offense in 2017. However, she allegedly managed to evade prosecution by leaving the country. Subsequently, it is alleged that upon her return, she resumed small-scale mining activities without obtaining the required licenses.

NHIS must cater for dialysis treatment – NHSAG

The National Health Students Association of Ghana (NHSAG) has added its voice to the growing calls for the inclusion of dialysis treatment in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

This appeal comes in the wake of a significant increase in the cost of renal dialysis at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, where the price per session had surged from GHS¢380 to GHS¢765.42.

Although the hospital had temporarily suspended the implementation of the new fee, concerns lingered about the financial strain it would place on patients in need of dialysis.

In response to this situation, Daniel Onomah Asamoah, the President of the NHSA, urged the government to consider absorbing the cost of treatment to alleviate the burden on affected individuals.

Asamoah stated, “We made proposals to the government on the removal of import duties regarding the consumables and treatment for dialysis, and another proposal has to do with its inclusion in the National Insurance Scheme.”

This increase in dialysis costs had sparked widespread dismay among Ghanaians, particularly those who rely on dialysis treatment. The Minority Caucus in Parliament had condemned the price hike, describing it as illegal and excessive, and called for its immediate reversal.

Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, a former Cardiothoracic surgeon at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, had also shed light on the financial challenges faced by hospitals like Korle Bu in procuring and maintaining advanced medical equipment required for treatments such as dialysis.

  • Akufo-Addo urges UK, U.S. and EU to provide ECOWAS with resources in the fight against terrorism

Akufo-Addo urges UK, U.S. and EU to provide ECOWAS with resources in the fight against terrorism

The President Akufo-Addo, has appealed to global leaders to fully implement the provisions of Chapters Seven and Eight of the UN Charter and provide Africa with proportionate support in its battle against terrorism and violent extremism.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized that despite the considerable economic challenges faced by ECOWAS Member States, eleven of the fifteen Member States, following the suspension of the four military-led states, have expressed their readiness to confront terrorists with greater empowerment.

He noted a stark contrast in international support, highlighting the substantial aid provided to Ukraine in the face of the Russian war. In comparison, the security assistance extended to ECOWAS by the US, EU, and UK has amounted to a relatively meager US$29.6 million.

“Comparisons, they say, are odious, but some cannot be ignored. The Russian war on Ukraine has elicited, according to my information, some US$73.6 billion in American support for Ukraine, US$138.8 billion from the European Union and its Institutions, and US$14.5 billion from the United Kingdom,” he said.

With adequate support for ECOWAS, President Akufo-Addo expressed confidence that West African troops, without foreign intervention, could effectively combat terrorism in the region, as demonstrated by the Accra Initiative, showcasing indigenous self-reliance.

The President made these remarks during his speech on “Democracy and Security in West Africa” at the United States Institute of Peace’s Programme on Governance and Peace in Washington D.C., USA on October 12, 2023.

President Akufo-Addo explained the emergence of terrorists in West Africa, tracing their path from the Middle East and Afghanistan to Libya following Muammar Gaddafi’s downfall and their subsequent spread across the Sahara into northern Mali.

He highlighted the increasing displacement of populations in the Sahel due to the insecurity caused by these armed groups, emphasizing that Africa has become a focal point for terrorist organizations seeking refuge after setbacks in other parts of the world.

Acknowledging the success achieved in the fight against terrorism, the President pointed out that the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on developing countries has left many regions, particularly in the Sahel, facing severe economic challenges.

He stressed the urgency of working together in the spirit of multilateralism to address these pressing issues and maintain global peace and democracy. Failure to renew such commitments, he warned, would lead to a more perilous world in the present and future.

Give SHS authorities the nod to purchase food supplies – Mahama to govt

Former president, John Dramani Mahama has supported the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools’ (CHASS) proposal for Senior High Schools (SHS) authorities to have the ability to purchase food items to feed students.

This endorsement aligns with remarks he made back in 2020.

As of now, the government, through the National Food Buffer Stock Company, supplies food items to senior high schools across the country.

However, this system has faced criticism, as these schools have long complained of food shortages.

In November 2020, Mr. Mahama made a promise that under the free SHS policy, the responsibility for feeding students would shift to the school management in the next NDC government.

During a rally in Navrongo, Upper East Region, he announced that grants for the purchase of food items would be provided to school heads to assume this responsibility.

In a recent Facebook post, Mr. Mahama emphasized his agreement with CHASS’s recommendation that Senior High School administrations be allowed to procure food items for their students.

“This change in policy aligns with my stance, which I announced in Navrongo in November 2020.”

He reiterated that this change in policy is consistent with his position, as articulated in Navrongo in November 2020.

Mr. Mahama’s post further stressed the importance of this shift, stating that it would eliminate the unnecessary obstacles that impede the provision of meals to SHS students in Ghana.

“I could’ve died on the motorway yesterday. Burst tire and broken rim. If it wasn’t for God,” she recounted.

This incident is not an isolated one, as several celebrities had previously shared their own dangerous encounters during the #OccupyJulorbi protest, shedding light on the perilous condition of the Accra-Tema motorway.

Comedian SDK, in particular, recounted a close call where he narrowly avoided a life-threatening situation due to a driver’s inability to detect a hazardous pothole. The incident amplifies the urgent need for improved road conditions and safety measures.

“We are exercising our rights; we need good roads. I stay at Spintex; you have passed the motorway before, right? I almost died on the Tema-Motorway because one driver did not know that there was a pothole, not even a pothole but a manhole,” SDK lamented in an interview with TV3.
