  • Akufo-Addo prone to mistakes when speaking without a written speech – Social Analyst

Akufo-Addo prone to mistakes when speaking without a written speech – Social Analyst

A social analyst, Andy Nana Wusu, has pointed out that President Akufo-Addo tends to make errors when delivering impromptu public speeches without a written text.

He explained that the president often speaks candidly without a prepared script when addressing the public, which can lead to inaccuracies.

These observations were prompted by a recent speech by President Akufo-Addo during his visit to flood-affected areas on October 16, 2023, caused by the spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams.

In his speech, the President acknowledged that the people in the area had not voted for him, but he was acting on behalf of the government to address the issue.

The President’s comments stirred mixed reactions from the public. Some criticized him for making a politically charged statement during a disaster, while others believed he was merely stating that the affected area was a stronghold of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Andy Nana Wusu, speaking to the media, noted that the President is not a naturally gifted public speaker and tends to make errors when speaking without a prepared text.

“If the president is speaking without a written speech, he often makes errors. God gave each of us strength. Some are good with public speaking, some are not.

“The venue where he was speaking, was it necessary that he said that? So, for me, we shouldn’t continue on that tangent because if we do, we will neglect the main concern which is the flood and the victims,” he added.

He emphasized the importance of focusing on the flood and its victims, suggesting that the timing and venue were not appropriate for the President’s comments.

Here are excerpts of what the President said to the flood victims:

“When I took the oath of office as president, I took the oath of office as president to every single individual in Ghana, of all people, districts in Ghana. And whether they voted for me or not, once I have taken the oath, I am the president of all the people.

So, Torgbui, you and your elders, I want the people here, beginning with you and the elders, to understand that when something like this happens and the government acts, the government is acting for Ghanaians, that is all Ghanaians.

I came here because Ghanaians are having difficulties and are suffering, and it is my responsibility to try and help.

Because if it is the question of counting who votes for me and who doesn’t vote for me, I shouldn’t be here, because you don’t vote for me, but that is not my concern. And in any event, you will vote for me and my party.”

Green leafy vegetables key to healthy growth – IMaH Dietician

A Dietician at the International Maritime Hospital (IMaH), Ms. Ama Hienne Amoako, has promoted the consumption of nutrient-packed green leafy vegetables to support healthy growth and development.

Speaking to the media, she emphasized that green leafy vegetables, such as kontomire and dandelion, contain significant amounts of folic acid, particularly beneficial for pregnant women to enhance brain development.

Ms. Amoako shared her insights during the weekly “Your Health! Our Collective Responsibility!” event organized by the Ghana News Agency’s Tema Regional Office.

This initiative aims to foster health-related communication and offer a platform for disseminating health information, ultimately improving health literacy and personal health choices.

Discussing “Paediatric Nutrition,” Ms. Amoako recommended the consumption of fruits like oranges, pawpaws, sweet potatoes, and palm oil, all rich in vitamin A, to maintain clear eyesight for both the mother and child during pregnancy.

She also highlighted the importance of iron supplements in child development when taken during pregnancy.

“The four-star diet, when consumed, helps the body fight diseases and keeps the body fit.

“Parents with newly born babies should bring them out for the early morning sun, which provides vitamin D and also aids in the identification of the child’s eyes if any changes occur,” she advised.

Ms. Amoako advised that pregnant women follow a four-star diet, which includes staples, legumes and seed foods, fruits and vegetables, and animal sources.

This balanced diet is beneficial during pregnancy and after delivery, supporting disease resistance and overall fitness.

Folic acid supplements, along with iron supplements during the antenatal stage, are essential to prevent deficiencies in the developing baby.

She stressed that each nutritional component in our meals plays a vital role in the body’s immunization and development.

Additionally, Ms. Amoako recommended exposing newborns to early morning sunlight, as it provides vitamin D and aids in identifying any changes in the child’s eyes.

  • Akufo-Addo’s appointees involved in galamsey will be dealt with should we come to power – NDC

Akufo-Addo’s appointees involved in galamsey will be dealt with should we come to power – NDC

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a stern warning that it will deal with officials of the Akufo-Addo government allegedly involved in illegal mining should there be a change of power in the 2024 elections.

Expressing deep concern about the devastating impact of illegal mining on the present and future generations, the NDC is demanding an immediate halt to such activities.

During a press conference as part of its ‘Moment of Truth Series’ on Monday, October 16, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, cautioned those implicated in the illegal mining issue to prepare for accountability.

“We hereby serve notice, that even if they are left off the hook today, they will not escape the long arms of the law tomorrow, because crime has no expiry date.”

“Until this is done, we shall make no headway in our fight against illegal mining and our beloved country, will have no sustainable future”.

“Like many environmentalists and patriotic voices, the NDC is deeply worried and appalled by the extent to which President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia have gone to encourage and condone the destruction of Ghana’s environment”.

“They have been active collaborators and promoters of the ‘galamsey trade’.  Their actions through their Attorney-General to continuously protect corrupt officials of the ruling NPP and the government, speak loudly. Posterity will never forgive them,” he said.

Mr. Gyamfi, however, laid the blame for the widespread destruction caused by illegal mining on President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

He contended that the two are actively involved in and supportive of the illegal mining trade, which explains the lack of action to combat it.

“Like many environmentalists and patriotic voices, the NDC is deeply concerned and appalled by the extent to which President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Alhaji Bawumia have gone to encourage and condone the destruction of Ghana’s environment.”

“They have been active collaborators and promoters of the ‘galamsey trade.’ Their actions, through their Attorney-General, to continuously shield corrupt officials of the ruling NPP and the government, speak volumes. Posterity will never forgive them,” he remarked.

Furthermore, the party is demanding the immediate resignation of the Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, accusing him of attempting to conceal serious crimes committed by corrupt government and NPP officials involved in illegal mining.

“The NDC hereby demands the immediate resignation of the Attorney-General for his dubious attempt to cover up serious crimes that have been perpetrated against the state by corrupt government and NPP officials who are destroying our water bodies and forests through illegal mining.”

This demand comes after the Attorney General advised that former Environment Minister, Prof. Frimpong Boateng’s allegations in his report on illegal mining activities lacked substance. Mr. Dame emphasized that there was no evidence to prosecute individuals named in the report.

Prof. Frimpong Boateng had identified some high-ranking government officials as complicit in the illegal mining problem, even reaching as far as the Jubilee House, the seat of government. He also alleged that the claims of some 500 missing excavators seized from illegal miners in 2020 were fabricated by certain government figures to discredit him.

Since his revelations, calls for accountability from government officials and individuals involved in illegal mining have increased. However, Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame has advised against giving much attention to the 36-page report authored by Prof. Frimpong Boateng titled “Report on the work of IMCIM so far and the way forward.”

Bawumia has Ghana at heart, vote for him – Former Director of BoG to Ghanaians

A former Director of Currency at the Bank of Ghana (BoG), John Gyamfi, has urged party delegates and Ghanaians to cast their votes for Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia for the sake of achieving an economic breakthrough.

In a press statement, Mr. Gyamfi emphasized that Vice President Bawumia possesses the vision needed to lead the country toward significant transformation across various sectors of the economy when he assumes the presidency.

Mr. Gyamfi lauded the Vice President’s endeavors to position Ghana as a digital hub of Africa, close the digital divide, and apply digital technology and artificial intelligence for the advancement of healthcare, education, and public service delivery. He regarded these efforts as unparalleled.

“He has vision to lead the country into immense transformation across the economy’s various sectors when he becomes President of Ghana”.

Dr. Bawumia’s plans to transform Ghana into a Health Tourism Hub by equipping the nation’s teaching hospitals to perform various organ transplants to enhance foreign exchange earnings were deemed remarkable by Mr. Gyamfi.

The statement also highlighted Vice President Bawumia’s initiatives to establish Ghana as a prominent Air Travel, Financial Services, and Petrochemical Hub in the Sub-Saharan Region.

These endeavors aim to stimulate investment, job creation, and manufacturing, as well as support road construction using by-products from world-class oil refineries.

Mr. Gyamfi recognized the significance of having a visionary leader who is committed to maximizing the benefits of Ghana’s natural resources, including gold, lithium, and other minerals. Dr. Bawumia’s policies, such as value addition, a certified gold refinery, and enhancing the gold-for-oil policy, were seen as valuable assets for the nation.

The statement underlined Mr. Gyamfi’s personal connection with Dr. Bawumia, having known him since their student days at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada in 1991. They shared accommodation for 18 months and worked together during that time.

According to Mr. Gyamfi, Dr. Bawumia is a remarkable individual, characterized by qualities such as honesty, loyalty, incorruptibility, trustworthiness, non-discrimination, accommodation, principled leadership, vision, and exceptional competence.

Mr. Gyamfi also noted the Vice President’s active engagement in church programs while being a committed and practicing Muslim, harking back to their student days in Canada.

  • Akosombo Dam spillage: Akufo-Addo’s ‘insensitive’ remarks aggravated victims’ situation – Volta NDC

Akosombo Dam spillage: Akufo-Addo’s ‘insensitive’ remarks aggravated victims’ situation – Volta NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed its disappointment with President Akufo-Addo’s visit to the Volta Region following the devastating floods that have impacted the area.

The President’s remarks during his visit have been met with criticism from the NDC, some of whom have described them as lacking in sensitivity.

During his tour of the severely affected districts, President Akufo-Addo assured the affected communities of his administration’s commitment to addressing the situation.

In his speech, the President stated, “I came here because Ghanaians are facing difficulties and suffering, and it is my responsibility to try and help. If it is a matter of counting who votes for me and who doesn’t vote for me, then I shouldn’t be here because you don’t vote for me. But that is not my concern. And, in any case, one day you will vote for me and my party.”

The President’s comments have not been well-received by a portion of the public, with many deeming them insensitive considering the gravity of the flooding crisis.

The Regional Secretary of the Volta NDC, James Gunu, issued a statement expressing the party’s concerns regarding the President’s visit and the impact of his speech on the flood victims.

The statement highlights the emotional distress caused by the President’s remarks to the victims in North Tongu.

It underscores the absence of specific assistance and concrete plans mentioned in the President’s speech, leaving flood victims without clear information regarding the support and resources that will be made available to them.

The NDC also criticizes the President’s choice of words and tone, which they believe exacerbated the emotional turmoil experienced by the victims.

Furthermore, the statement notes that “many flood victims anticipated immediate solutions for housing, healthcare, and essential services, which have not been addressed.”

The NDC has called for a prompt and effective response to aid the flood victims during this challenging period.

The party emphasizes the necessity for practical measures to alleviate the suffering of the victims and urges President Nana Akufo-Addo and his administration to promptly address the concerns raised by the flood victims and their advocates.

  • Simms SHS students sleeping in classrooms due to fire incident

Simms SHS students sleeping in classrooms due to fire incident

In the aftermath of a devastating fire engulfed the boys’ dormitory at Simms Senior High School in the Ashanti region last Friday, a dire situation has unfolded, leaving many students stranded without their belongings.

Some students have been permitted to return home, while those who remain are compelled to use classrooms as makeshift sleeping quarters.

According to affected students who spoke to the media, their frustration is mounting, and they are appealing to the authorities to address the urgent accommodation issue.

They are also urging the government to resume the construction of a dormitory block project that has been abandoned for over a decade.

    Background:

The fire incident on Friday severely damaged the boys’ dormitory at Simms Senior High School, resulting in the loss of student essentials such as trunks, beds, books, buckets, and clothing from four rooms. The first-year students primarily occupied the first floor, while the second-year students were housed on the ground floor.

While the prompt response by Ghana National Fire Service personnel contained the flames to the first floor, the compromised structure of the building poses a significant risk to students on the ground level.

As a result, students on the ground floor have been advised against using the area for safety reasons, utilizing it only for changing clothes and storing personal belongings. At night, they are compelled to sleep in classrooms after study hours, as the damaged building remains perilous.

Despite recent achievements in sports and academics, including winning the Ashanti region inter-school soccer competition and securing a bronze medal at the regional National Science and Maths Quiz, Simms Senior High School is grappling with infrastructure challenges.

Students, speaking anonymously, express concerns about the abandoned boys’ dormitory project initiated over a decade ago. They believe that completing this project would significantly alleviate their current accommodation predicament, eliminating the need for makeshift sleeping spaces in classrooms.

Additionally, stalled projects, including an assembly hall, further compound the infrastructure woes.

Under the looming uncertainty of their nightly arrangements, students find it challenging to concentrate on their studies. While investigations by the Ghana National Fire Service are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, fortunately, no casualties were reported.

“My friends who have not heard from me for years are calling me from the U.S., U.K., and Germany everywhere. God has His own way of bringing up somebody. Sometimes you will not understand, but at the end of the day, you will understand and say, I thought this was a problem, but that was the way the Lord is using to bring you up.”

Mensah stated, “You see, God has His own way of blessing people. Had it not been for this tape, maybe we wouldn’t have been here. My name and my picture wouldn’t have been where it is circulating now. Now, if you go to my constituency, everybody knows me. Everybody is looking for me.”

He further explained how friends from around the world, including the U.S., U.K., and Germany, have reconnected with him, thanks to the public attention the scandal generated. He expressed gratitude for the support he received from colleagues and friends during this challenging period.

COP Alex Mensah also emphasized that he learned valuable lessons from the leaked tape scandal and is determined to move forward with a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility.

When directly asked if he views the leaked tape as a blessing, the parliamentary hopeful for Bekwai responded, “It has in so many ways. At least now, it has made the public aware that something is not going well in the Ghana Police Service.”

UTAG threatens industrial action if government fails to pay 2022/23 BRA by October 21

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has requested that government disburses their Book and Research Allowance (BRA) for the 2022/2023 academic year by Saturday, October 21.

They have cautioned that failing to comply with this request may result in an industrial action.

This warning was officially conveyed in a communiqué issued by UTAG on Monday, October 16.

The document was signed by UTAG’s National President, Professor Mamudu A. Akudugu, and National Secretary, Dr. Elliasu Mumuni. According to the communiqué, the delayed disbursement of the BRA is causing unrest on university campuses.

The release stated, “UTAG clarifies that the implementation of the National Research Fund should not replace the infamous Book and Research Allowance (BRA), which is a critical component of the conditions of service of the Members of UTAG, which has been delayed unduly for the already completed 2022/2023 Academic year as many Lecturers in public universities are yet to receive this reimbursable expenditure. This is creating tension on our campus.”

“We are urging the Government to ensure that all UTAG Members receive their BRA by the 21st of October to avoid disrupting industrial harmony,” UTAG stated in the release. We urge the government to ensure that all UTAG members receive their BRA by October 21 to maintain industrial harmony,” UTAG emphasized in its release”.

“Congress of UTAG observed with sadness the increasing attacks on the freedom of expression and of the Media. These developments are not in the interest of our growing democratic dispensation.”

“The recent attacks on journalists and some media houses in the country are attacks on freedom of expression as guaranteed in Chapter 12 of Article 162 of the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.”

Consequently, UTAG has called on the Ghana Police Service to promptly apprehend and prosecute those responsible for these acts.

“While condemning these acts of violence and lawlessness, UTAG commends the police for acting swiftly to arrest some individuals who recently attacked journalists and panellists at United Television (UTV).”

President Akufo-Addo has made a resolute commitment on behalf of the government to offer essential assistance to the flood victims in parts of the Eastern, Greater Accra, and Volta regions, who have been adversely affected by the release of excess water from the Kpong and Akosombo Dams.

President Akufo-Addo made this pledge during his visit to the impacted communities in Mepe and the surrounding areas on Monday, October 16.

The president also reassured the residents that the inter-ministerial committee he has established to address flood-related issues will not only determine immediate relief efforts for the victims but diligently focus on preventing the occurrence of such significant disasters in the future.

“The coordination is about the immediate and the most important thing was to ensure the life of people and that is why 9 centres were established for all the displaced people and all the people in these 9 centres have been provided relief items by NADMO, and it is NADMO’s intention to continue to provide relief items. Apart from what NADMO is doing, we must also think about the future.

“I am aware that you are a farming people and the people who are farming on the banks of the rivers and had their crops destroyed, one of the things the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Finance and the Office of the President are going to do is to work together with the district assemblies to decide the exact support we have to give to you when the water has gone away.”

  • Let’s collaborate to resolve payroll anomalies – FWSC calls on public institutions

Let’s collaborate to resolve payroll anomalies – FWSC calls on public institutions

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) has urged public institutions’ management to proactively address discrepancies within their organizations.

This call comes in response to the identification of various irregularities during its payroll monitoring system, which was initiated in April 2023.

Among the 17 entities examined thus far, the commission has uncovered issues such as impersonation, salary overpayments, and discrepancies in worker validation as prominent concerns requiring immediate attention.

Benjamin Arthur, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the FWSC, emphasized that resolving these anomalies could result in potential monthly savings of over GH¢200,000 for the government. Speaking to the media, he stated, “We appeal to public sector institutions and, in particular, their management to collaborate with the Controller to ensure that any personnel subject to validation are promptly updated when transferred from their original positions. Changes should be made to prevent individuals from undergoing validation without being reported.”

He also noted that the FWSC had identified numerous cases of individuals altering their dates of birth, resulting in multiple birthdate entries, including those on the payroll, in the management data, as provided by the individuals themselves, and with SSNIT (Social Security and National Insurance Trust).

Mr Arthur urged public sector institution management to address these issues as well.

“We are pleading with the various public sector institutions and especially with their management that they should collaborate with the Controller to ensure that as soon as anybody who does validation is transferred from his or her original place. The changes should be made in such a way that you don’t have people who are being validated and yet are not being reported.”

“We also found out that a number of people continue to change their dates of birth. There are instances where for an individual you will find about three different dates of birth. One on the payroll, one with the management data, one communicated by the individual himself or herself, and one with SSNIT… So we want to plead with the management of public sector institutions,” he stated.

  • Prolonged flagbearer election process fueling division in NPP – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

Prolonged flagbearer election process fueling division in NPP – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

The extended duration for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer election process has been criticized by the Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

He believes this extended period contributes to the party’s internal divisions.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) officially opened nominations for its flagbearer election on May 26, 2023, following discussions during the National Executive Committee (NEC) and National Council meeting on April 3, 2023. While nominations concluded on June 24, 2023.

In an effort to reduce the number of aspirants, a Super Delegates’ Conference took place between June and August.

Subsequently, the party is set to conduct the flagbearer election on November 4, 2023, spanning an additional three months.

Numerous members, supporters, and flagbearer aspirants of the NPP have expressed concerns about recent developments within the ruling party.

These concerns have been attributed to factors such as “intimidation” and “manipulation” and have led to the resignation of a founding member, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, who now plans to run as an independent candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

Speaking to the media, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu pointed out that the prolonged flagbearer selection process may be a contributing factor to the current challenges facing the party.

“These issues are coming up, because the programme to elect a flagbearer has been expansive. It’s been made to span for a very long time, and I never imagine that we are going to go this way. Some of us were arguing that this whole thing ought to have been held earlier and the time span also shortened. But we are in a democratic party. You may float an idea, but if the majority thinks otherwise, the majority will have their way. So, we are where we are. But I think I must admit, it is shaking the party a bit, but we will sail through,’’ he stressed.

He mentioned that the extended timeline was a matter of debate, with some members suggesting an earlier and shorter process.

However, the democratic nature of the party led to the current schedule. Despite the challenges, he expressed confidence that the party would overcome them.

The party’s leadership is actively working to address these issues and bring unity. An emergency meeting is planned, involving key figures in the party, to discuss and resolve the matter.

The Majority Leader mentioned that this meeting would involve the council of elders, central party leaders, former and current presidents, parliament members, major stakeholders, and pioneers of the party.

“The Chairman of the Council of Elders called and wanted us to have an emergency meeting involving the component parts of the upper echelon of the party; the council of elders, of course the central party itself, the former and current presidents and Parliament and other major stakeholders of the party and some of the pioneers of the party…u bring them on board …we are looking at not too huge a number may be 9 to 11, to address the matter.’’ Mr. Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu revealed.

In a speech delivered by Hon. Ben Abdallah Banda, Presidential Coordinator for Zongo and Inner-cities Development, on behalf of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the call for the ongoing promotion of inter-faith harmony to enhance peace and serenity in the nation has been emphasized.

Under the theme ‘Interfaith harmony: A cornerstone for global peace and tranquility,’ Dr. Bawumia emphasized that Ghana’s celebrated peace and stability can be largely attributed to the spirit of inter-faith tolerance.

He stressed that in an era when many countries grapple with religious and political intolerance, Ghana must reinforce its commitment to diversity.

“Today, we live in a time of unprecedented challenges, where divisions and conflicts based on religion, ethnicity and politics continue to plague and undermine national and global stability,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“In our increasingly interconnected world, we must recognize that our destinies are intertwined, regardless of our faith, nationality, political differences and ideologies or cultural background. It is worth noting and remembering that no true religion advocates hatred or violence and that true faith promotes love, compassion, understanding and peaceful coexistence,” he added.

In addition to urging the population to foster inter-faith harmony, the Vice President reaffirmed the government’s dedication to upholding Ghana’s peace and stability, recognized by the Global Peace Index.

“As a government, maintaining and promoting peace in our country has always been a priority, because without peace and tranquillity, there cannot be development and progress.

“If Ghana is ranked the most peaceful country in West Africa and the 2nd most peaceful country on the African continent by the Global Peace Index, it is because as a government, and a people, we are collectively doing many things right.”

Dr. Bawumia commended the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, for his unwavering commitment to diversity and public display of inter-faith tolerance, urging Muslims to follow his example.

“The National Chief Imam’s consistent demonstration of both intra, and interfaith harmony is not only desirable but essential for peace and stability, not only in our nation but throughout the world.

“His Eminence the National Chief Imam’s life embodies these principles, and his dedication to building bridges between different faiths has made our nation a more harmonious and peaceful place.”

He stressed that maintaining and promoting peace has consistently been a top priority for the government, as development and progress are unattainable without peace and tranquility.

He highlighted the vital role played by the National Chief Imam in promoting both intra and interfaith harmony, not only within the nation but also on a global scale.

Furthermore, the Vice President expressed his appreciation for the clergy’s collaborative efforts with the National Chief Imam and other Muslim leaders in the country.

Akosombo Dam spillage: Over 80 communities affected, with 10,896 children harmed – CRI

A non-governmental organization, Child Rights International (CRI) has conducted an assessment revealing that over 10,896 children have been impacted by the flooding resulting from the Akosombo Dam spillage.

These children reside in more than 80 communities, spanning across seven districts.

The flooding, which has resulted from the release of excess water by the Volta River Authority (VRA) since September 15, 2023, has disrupted various aspects of the children’s lives, including education, health, mobility, shelter, and access to food in the affected communities.

CRI’s Executive Director, Bright Appiah, emphasized that the flooding has severely impacted essential services, particularly for children, who are among the most affected.

Educational facilities have been damaged, limiting access to quality education, while mobility has been significantly restricted. Families, including children, are struggling to find shelter, and accessing food has become a major concern for them.

CRI is fully committed to providing immediate support to these affected children and their families. This support will prioritize ensuring access to education, shelter, food, and necessary resources.

CRI’s staff is actively contributing an undisclosed amount to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to assist in supporting the welfare of affected children.

Given the urgency of the situation, CRI is calling upon all stakeholders, including corporate entities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and individuals, to join forces with NADMO in providing relief and protection to the affected children.

This collaborative effort is aimed at averting any potential outbreak of diseases and other related challenges.

“Child Rights International (CRl) recognises the urgency of this situation and has been actively working to assess the needs of the affected children. Our assessments reveal that approximately ten thousand eight hundred and ninety-six (10,896) children have been affected so far across over eighty (80) communities, spanning seven (7) districts.

“CRl is committed to providing immediate support to these children and their families, with a focus on ensuring access to education, shelter, food, and necessary resources. The staff of Child Rights International (CRl) are giving immediate support of an undisclosed amount to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to support the welfare of the children affected.

“The situation at hand will require emergency support from stakeholders. Therefore CRl is calling on all stakeholders, including corporate bodies, non-government Organisations (NGOs ), and individuals, to support the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in providing relief and protection for children affected in order to avert any possible outbreak of diseases and other related conditions.”

MoH clears antiretroviral medication delayed at Tema Port

The Ministry of Health (MoH) has successfully cleared the delayed antiretroviral medications that were held at the Tema port.

The medications, previously reported to have been held at the port since July 2023 because of the Ministry’s challenges in paying import duties, have been released.

Despite claims by the Minority in Parliament that the delay was due to a lack of tax waivers, the Health Ministry denied these allegations and promised that the medicines would be cleared by October 13.

In a press release on Monday, October 16, the Ministry confirmed that the medications were indeed cleared on the promised date and have started being distributed to various hospitals across the country.

“The Ministry of Health is pleased to inform the general public that the antiretroviral medications which delayed at Tema port were cleared on Friday, October 13, 2023, as was assured by the Ministry in relation to the rejoinder published on Saturday, October 7, 2023, on the aforementioned subject matter.

“The distribution of the medications to all affected facilities has begun in earnest.”

The press release also noted that the Ministry is working closely with the Ghana Supply Commission to ensure the smooth clearance of such drugs and related items in the future.

Akosombo Dam spillage: Victims must be resettled, compensated – One Volta Group to govt

The One Volta Group (OVG) is urging the government to promptly resettle individuals affected by the floods resulting from the Akosombo Dam’s spillage. They are also advocating for compensation to be provided to the affected victims.

In a press statement dated October 15, 2023, OVG expressed several grievances about the disasters experienced in the region, highlighting that the affected individuals were not at fault.

As a result, the group has put forth a seven-point recommendation to the government to address these ongoing challenges.

“We suggest the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government do the needful and consider the following as soon as
possible: Immediate resettlement of the people with the full cost borne by government, set up a high-level committee including the indigenes as to how we got here and those who
are negligent face disciplinary actions, have a listing of all individuals affected by the disaster for compensation. This list and compensation should be audited and results be released,” the group added in its statement.

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED BY ONE VOLTA GROUP (OVG) IN THE FACE OF INUNDATION OF SIGNIFICANT PORTIONS OF VOLTA REGION

    15th October 2023

    For immediate release

    All media

In the past one and a half weeks we view with trepidation, utmost concern, hopelessness, and helplessness as we watch the complete devastation of the lives, the livelihoods, dangers to life and property to those living in the downstream areas of the Volta River dam at Akosombo. Initially we thought it was an aberration seeing sections of Agbozume, areas in Keta lagoon, Aflao and others flooded.

We thought it was the usual drainage issues in the affected communities until the flooding of the riverine areas which then informed us about actions taken by VRA because of the flood waters flowing from upstream threatening the collapse of the Akosombo Dam. Our hope of return to normalcy immediately evaporated giving way to despondency when we realized that we were not dealing with mere local rainfall but external massive flow of water.

Our disappointment cannot be measured when we view that since the spillage and consequent untold hardships and havoc visited on the people of the Volta Region ling downstream of the Akosombo dam the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, had not made a trip to the affected areas neither had his Vice President or any of his senior cabinet members.

We thank the Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Letsa for visiting some of the affected areas. The President left the shores of Ghana to the United States when some sections were already inundated. We consider this inhumane, uncaring, and bothering on insensitivity and demonstration as if the lives of the people of the Volta Region do not matter. It is the responsibility of the central government of any Republic to protect the rights and welfare of its citizen irrespective of where they live.

The case of Ghana seems different from this NPP administration. We are wondering whether the same attitude can be shown to other citizens facing this unforetold disaster through no fault of theirs. While we recognize that universal climate change issues might have contributed to torrential rains which culminated to excessive water which threatened the possibly collapse of the dam and its subsequent effects and the VRA authorities have to do the needful, we believe it goes to the unfortunate core of lack of maintenance culture as well as competent forecasting and planning in our governance and bureaucracy which would have mitigated the disastrous consequences.

For example, did the VRA engineers note what was happening in the world with record rainfalls and flooding? Was there an emergency planning committee as to what should be done in the event of excessive rain following existing protocols or developing contingency plans? Were those living downstream who would be affected notified and how early? One wonders why the VRA engineers are now visiting affected areas days after the spillage have occurred.

We consider that too late too soon !! If the spillage was well planned why were the people of Ghana not informed in advance or advised should have on a higher ground It is no gainsaying that since the construction of the Volta Dam the people of the Volta Region have endured most damage than any other region in Ghana. Environmental damage through inundation of massive faming lands, virgin forests and evacuation of ancestral homes to new locations with minimal compensation, paid and unpaid. We recall with sadness the destroying of fishing of fresh water shrimps, fresh water fish, crabs and others from Anyanui to other coastal areas.

We also note with disappointment how many years it took to have electricity extended to the Volta Region from the National grid. The continues saga has now turned from drought to excessive water which has taken over houses, some at window levels, some at roofing levels, people are trapped, some individuals are drowning snakes biting people in the water resulting in deaths.

This calamity has been exacerbated beyond what happened in the floods of 1963 and 1968 and no lessons were learned. As of going to press we can say with certainty that 101 communities with tens of thousands of people have been affected with the spillage and still counting (Central Tongu District 30, South Tongu 22, North Tongu 23, Keta District 10, Anlo 16).

We are concerned about disaster wrecked on these communities such as deaths due to drowning, sleep deprivation of the people affected with consequent mental health issues, closure of educational and medical facilities, massive loss of farmlands, business, and personal property, waterborne diseases, desecration of sacred and religious sites to mention a few.

We are concerned about the present and future health effects on these communities.

We suggest the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government do the needful and consider the following as soon as possible

    1. Immediate resettlement of the people with the full cost borne by government

    2. Set up a high-level committee including the indigenes as to how we got here and those who were negligent face disciplinary actions

    3. Have a listing of all individuals affected by the disaster for compensation. This list and compensation should be audited and results be released

    4. Marshall the forces of the military field engineers’ regiment for short term and long-term solution

    5. Call on the security forces and traditional authorities and district assembly members to harness resources to prevent unscrupulous people who may want to take advantage of the situations and extort the communities who are inundated with water

    6. Use helicopters for surveillance and mapping areas of the communities affected for current solutions and future prevention programs

    7. It is incumbent to develop a total framework by professionals and not political hatchet men to deal with explaining and execution of disasters Thank you and may the Almighty bless Ghana. Long live the Homeland

    Sincerely,

  • Akosombo Dam spillage: More than 12,000 individuals displaced – Deputy Director of Health Services

Akosombo Dam spillage: More than 12,000 individuals displaced – Deputy Director of Health Services

Deputy Director of Health Services in the Volta Region, Dr. Senanu Kwesi Dzokoto, has revealed that the spillage of the Akosombo Dam has resulted in the displacement of at least 12,000 people.

The controlled water spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams commenced on September 15, 2023, due to a consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir. This has led to thousands of residents in areas like South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, and several others having their homes submerged.

During an interview with the media, Dr. Dzokoto mentioned that the health directorate is actively taking measures to ensure the safety and immediate needs of the displaced persons are met.

He emphasized the importance of providing proper sanitary conditions in the camps, offering psychosocial support through mobile teams, and addressing any health emergencies.

“As of yesterday, we have close to 12,000 displaced persons. Our first immediate concern is to make sure that the 12,000 people are safe and free from any immediate risk. So some of them are in safe havens, especially in North Tongu, which is the worst-affected district in the Volta Region. And we have ensured that first of all, the sanitary conditions in the camps are quickly improved. We have also made mobile teams available to them, which are providing psychosocial support, and we are on hand to deal with any health emergencies,” he stated.

Dr. Dzokoto highlighted the focus on educating residents about maintaining proper health behaviors to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases, particularly cholera, which is a common concern in such disaster situations.

“What we really want to avoid is to avoid something like cholera because that is the most common epidemic that may arise from a disaster of this nature,” he added.

Additionally, he noted that 25% of Mepe in the North Tongu District has been submerged in water, illustrating the severity of the impact on affected areas.

“If you go to North Tongu, while we were there for the rapid assessment, about 25% of Mepe was under water, and even two-storey buildings had their roofs almost covered by water,” he said.

Leaked sex tape is part of my two sexual encounters in 2022 – Moyo Lawal

Nollywood actress Moyo Lawal has revealed that the recently circulated viral sex tape involving her, constitutes her second sexual encounter in 2022.

Nollywood actress Moyo has disclosed that the recent viral leaked sex tape featuring her marks her second sexual encounters in 2022.

She revealed this information while discussing the circumstances surrounding the leaking of her intimate video a few weeks ago.

In a detailed Instagram post on Sunday night, October 15, Moyo Lawal refuted the claim that she leaked the video.

She asserted that appearances can be deceiving and went on to share her painful story, explaining that the man in the video had worked hard to earn her trust, with plans of settling down and starting a life together.

She wrote: “Until a lioness tells her story, every hunter will continue to be a hero. People always take quiet, non-problematic people as fools. However, I think it is time for me to start talking.

“One thing… I can tell you for a fact however is that things are never what they seem to be. I only had sex twice last year, one of those times is the video. I agreed to it because he started recording after the fact that he doesn’t live in Nigeria.

“He put in a lot of work winning my trust over the years and I mean a lot. So much so, we were already working towards a house, marriage and all. That is why I had to break up with him last year, when I started having communication challenges with him because I put my entire life on pause with any man I am dating.

“I have not made so many sacrifices by turning down so many dating offers, sleeping alone 90% of my entire adult life, choosing to be alone… to have an ugly video that happened when I was ill, hanging over my head (meanwhile to the set of unbelievers who actually thought that video was released by me, because of a foolish narrative that started because I didn’t point fingers or start trash talking or blaming anyone and stayed quiet to end it all quickly… I honestly don’t know what to tell you )

“(The rest of my caption is in my slides) P.s They say what doesn’t kill you make a you stronger and changes you. I pray I become carefree and outgoing because doing life the right way has shown my enemy shege.”

She further elaborated on the challenges that led to their breakup, highlighting her commitment to any relationship she enters.

Moyo Lawal mentioned that the video was recorded while she was unwell and revealed that she had made sacrifices to remain single and focus on her career.

This story underscores the need for understanding and empathy when it comes to personal experiences and challenges faced by individuals.

  • Tema and its environs cannot be saved should Akosombo Dam exceed its operational level – VRA

Tema and its environs cannot be saved should Akosombo Dam exceed its operational level – VRA

The Volta River Authority (VRA) has cautioned that if the water level of the Akosombo Dam surpasses its operational capacity, it could result in catastrophic consequences, with no lives or structures spared.

To prevent any unforeseen disaster, the VRA has indicated that it might be necessary to continue releasing water from the dam if the water level continues to rise.

Speaking to the media, Deputy Chief Executive of the VRA, Edward Obeng Kenzo, disclosed that the current water level of the dam stands at 277.26 feet, while its maximum operational level is 277.5 feet.

Going beyond this operational level could jeopardize the dam’s integrity, potentially leading to a massive release of water that could engulf areas along the Volta River, causing extensive damage and loss of life.

“We don’t want to spill any additional volume of water. We are tracking and with the data, we believe that we may not spill any volume of water. But if there should be any unexpected heavy rains into the dam, we’ll be compelled to spill. Where we are now, we are around 277.26 feet of water behind the dam. The dam’s operational level is 276, the maximum allowable operational level of the dam is 277.5 feet.”

“So we are left with only about 0.24 feet to get to that maximum operational level of the dam. So any level beyond this, we are putting the dam’s integrity at risk. If the dam should break, the volume of water that will come out of the dam – all those along the banks of the river, all the way to somewhere around Tema will be wiped into the sea. No human being will be saved, no structure will be saved, nothing will be saved,” Mr Kenzo said.

Mr. Kenzo emphasized that the VRA intends to avoid spilling additional water from the dam, and no such plans are in place for the coming days. However, he stressed the critical importance of staying below the operational level to prevent a dam breach.

The controlled water spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams commenced on September 15, 2023, due to a consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir.

This has resulted in numerous homes in areas like South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, and other regions being submerged due to the spillage.

Bawumia’s presidency will attract Saudi Arabian investment in Ghana – Maurice Ampaw

Lawyer Maurice Ampaw has expressed the belief that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s potential victory in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries aligns with what he sees as God’s plan for Ghana.

During an interview with the media, the private legal practitioner suggested that Dr. Bawumia is destined to become Ghana’s first Muslim president.

He further asserted that Bawumia’s presidency could lead to increased investment from the Arab world, particularly Saudi Arabia and the broader Islamic community, which would positively impact Ghana’s economy and contribute to the needed transformation.

“If Bawumia wins, it is in line with what God has said. For the first time, we are going to get a Muslim President. And Saudi Arabia and the Islamic community would be investing hugely in this country to support our economy. That is what we need now,” he said.

Ampaw dismissed claims that Ghana is not ready for a Muslim president and expressed his support for the idea, stating,“I’m in for a Muslim becoming a President. Ghana is ready for this and Insha Allah, we will get it”.

However, he made it clear that he would not support the NPP or campaign for them if Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, becomes the party’s presidential candidate.

Mr Ampaw believes that Kennedy Agyapong lacks the qualities needed to be a successful president and described his potential candidacy as a political disaster for both the party and the nation.

Akosombo Dam spillage: GMA advocates for Health Minister’s participation in Relief Coordination Committee

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has requested that government includes the Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, in the committee established to coordinate government resources addressing the Akosombo dam spillage, which has caused displacement of thousands.

The association emphasized the crucial role of the health sector in relief efforts, making it imperative for the Minister of Health to be part of the committee.

On October 13, 2023, a 13-member inter-ministerial committee was set up to coordinate the government’s response to those affected by the Akosombo dam spillage. Chaired by the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, the committee includes members from various key ministries.

In a statement released on Monday, the GMA expressed their approval of the formation of the Inter-ministerial Committee to address the flooding and related issues. However, they highlighted the exclusion of the Minister of Health from the committee, despite the crucial role the Ministry of Health plays in relief efforts.

They stressed the importance of the Ministry of Health in providing emergency healthcare, preventing water-borne diseases, ensuring risk communication, and maintaining essential health services during such crises.

Consequently, they urged the government to promptly include the Minister of Health in the committee.

“The provision of emergency healthcare and support, prevention of possible outbreaks of water-borne diseases, risk communication, and ensuring continuity of essential health services are fundamental to a response of this nature. We therefore call on the government to immediately include the Minister of Health as a matter of urgency.”

Ghana’s economic challenges are caused by debt financing – Afriyie Akoto

A presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has emphasized the urgent need for Ghana to shift its economic development strategy from excessive reliance on debt financing to sustainable policies grounded in homegrown diversification and development.

Speaking to the media, he pointed out that the current economic hardships faced by Ghanaians are a direct consequence of the nation’s heavy dependence on both external and internal borrowing, resulting in an escalating burden of debt that continually plagues the populace.

“We are all feeling the heat. An economy of 40 percent inflation who isn’t feeling the heat? How does anybody survive? I have been truthful to the facts. The government has been truthful to the facts, and that is why we went to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bailout”, he noted.

As a former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Akoto stressed that the reliance on debt financing has never been a favorable approach for Ghana. He underscored the necessity for a shift in policy to capitalize on the nation’s abundant natural resources through effective leadership, especially in agricultural diversification, to attain the desired economic independence.

He expressed concern about Ghana’s high inflation rate, emphasizing that this could be mitigated by reducing the dependency on debt financing and embracing indigenous policies.

While Ghana’s year-on-year inflation rate dropped from 40.1 percent in August 2023 to 38.1 percent in September 2023, Dr. Akoto asserted that even a 38 percent inflation rate remains intolerable for any country.

Dr. Akoto urged a departure from heavy borrowing and advocated for a pragmatic shift towards local economic policies, with a primary focus on agriculture for development, to break free from economic constraints.

He emphasized the need for a comprehensive restructuring of Ghana’s economy, diverting public resources towards the agricultural sector to support farmers, processors, marketers, and advertisers. Dr. Akoto highlighted the potential of agriculture in creating substantial job opportunities for the youth.

Referring to the success of the government’s flagship program, Planting for Food and Jobs (PfJ), which he initiated and implemented during his tenure as Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Akoto showcased the positive outcomes that a well-developed agricultural sector could achieve in reducing youth unemployment.

The Parliamentary Health Committee has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the management of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, demanding the immediate reopening of the renal unit for outpatients.

The Renal Patients Association has reported that the closure of this unit has tragically prevented patients from accessing critical dialysis treatment, resulting in the unfortunate loss of 14 lives.

Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Ranking Member on the Health Committee, expressed his profound concern during a media briefing held after inspecting the facility.

He urged the government to swiftly implement the necessary subsidies for dialysis treatment and criticized the delay in reopening the facility as insensitive.

“With regard to the dialysis issue at Korle-Bu, we believe that the government is being wicked, the government is being uncionable and the government is being insensitive.”

“For the past four to five months the renal unit has not been opened to the OPD and we think that as a matter of urgency, whatever it takes, wherever we can get the resources, we have covid levies, we have NHIL and this is a national emergency and government must put measures in place.

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has made significant progress in the ongoing investigation involving Cecilia Abena Dapaah, a former Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, by lifting the freeze on five of her bank accounts.

This decision comes as a result of the advancement of the investigation, which has now cleared these accounts from suspicion.

In a statement released on Twitter, the OSP outlined the timeline and reasoning behind this development.

The investigation was initiated in July 2023, focusing on potential corruption and corruption-related offenses, particularly related to substantial sums of money and other valuable assets allegedly linked to Ms. Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

To aid the investigation, the Special Prosecutor initially imposed a freeze on Ms. Dapaah’s bank accounts and other financial assets.

This action was part of a series of measures aimed at ensuring that the investigation could progress smoothly.

As the investigation unfolded, five of the bank accounts associated with Cecilia Dapaah were found to be clear of suspicion.

On October 16, 2023, the Special Prosecutor took a decisive step by lifting the freeze on these five bank accounts.

“The Special Prosecutor took measures, including issuing a freezing order in respect of the bank accounts and other financial assets of Ms. Dapaah to facilitate the investigation. Subsequently, the investigation has eliminated five (5) of the bank accounts of Ms. Dapaah from suspicion of being tainted property.

“On 16 October 2023 the Special Prosecutor revoked the freezing order in respect of the eliminated five (5) bank accounts of Ms. Dapaah. The freezing order is still in force and effect in respect of the other bank accounts and financial assets of Ms. Dapaah.”

Election polls are a matter of utmost significance and should not be trivialized by equating them to mere lottery predictions.

These polls, specifically election polls, play a pivotal role in the democratic process, particularly during electoral events.

Their purpose extends beyond mere prophesying election outcomes; they serve as a crucial tool for political leaders to gauge public sentiment and preferences.

Similar to all forms of research, political polls are expected to adhere to rigorous scientific standards. They should be characterized by professionalism, accuracy, and, most importantly, credibility.

While election poll results may not be as precise as predicting the sunrise, they must maintain a high level of accuracy, ideally within a margin of error of approximately ±5%.

However, when a supposedly professional poll’s predictions deviate drastically by over 20%, either positively or negatively, it raises serious concerns, especially when the researchers claim independence.

An example of such a failed poll was conducted by Global Info Analytics, led by Mussa Dankwa, prior to the NPP’s recent Super Delegates Conference in August.

They projected the top five candidates to be Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (36%), Alan Kyeremateng (33.3%), Kennedy Agyepong (24.8%), Kwabena Agyapong (1.5%), and Dr. Afriyie Akoto (1.3%).

However, this prediction turned out to be entirely off the mark, with significant discrepancies in both the rankings and the predicted percentages.

For instance, Dr. Bawumia’s predicted percentage of 36% was remarkably different from the nearly 69% he actually received, a difference of about 33%.

Such a wide margin of error is unacceptable in a credible poll. The prediction for Alan Kyerematen was off by approximately -23%, as he received only about 10% of the votes.

Even the placement of candidates did not match the actual results, indicating a significant lack of accuracy.

The poll also inaccurately projected the inclusion of Kwabena Agyapong in the top five and the last-place finish for Addai Nimo.

In reality, neither of these predictions came to fruition. Addai Nimo tied for fifth place and advanced to the final round.

These discrepancies raise serious questions about the credibility of Global Info Analytics in the realm of political polls.

A research organization conducting a poll that deviates by over 30% and -20% margins from the actual results should be concerned about its credibility, as should the consumers of such polls.

Rather than making new predictions for the upcoming main congress in November, Musah Dankwa and his team should issue an apology and provide an explanation for the failure of their NPP Super Delegates prediction.

These inaccurate predictions damage their credibility and, by extension, the credibility of their polls.

It is concerning that they continue to make bold predictions for the future, such as the prediction that Kennedy Agyapong would receive 39% of the votes in “swing regions.” The classification of regions as “swing” in the context of internal NPP politics seems unfounded, given Dr. Bawumia’s previous success in all 16 regions among Super Delegates. This inconsistency in their predictions only adds to the skepticism surrounding their work.

In conclusion, election polls are a serious business and should not be reduced to the level of guesswork. The people of Ghana and the NPP delegates who rely on these polls deserve respect and an apology for the deception disguised as political polling.

The stark disparities between the predictions and actual results from the NPP Super Delegates poll conducted by Global Info Analytics indicate that this particular poll was not a scientifically rigorous endeavor.

Media organizations should hold such pollsters accountable and demand transparency in their methodologies to maintain the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.

In essence, credible election polls should aim to reflect the public’s sentiments rather than imposing their own perspectives on the electorate.

Fake election polls that deceive the public only undermine the democratic process and provide no value to the nation’s political landscape.

  • Is Mensa Otabil still being prosecuted over Capital Bank collapse?

Is Mensa Otabil still being prosecuted over Capital Bank collapse?

Scores of Ghanaians have questioned why other prominent decision makers in the bank have not been prosecuted alongside the founder of the defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien,

The individuals in question include shareholders and directors of the defunct company, such as Oheneba Osei Akoto, Stephen Enchill, Kingsley Atta Ghansah, Otabil and Associates, International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), Kwadwo Ayisi Ahwireng, Isaac Osah Thompson-Mensah, John Kofi Mensah, Fitzgerald Odonkor, Amadu Montia, Kofi Kwakwa, and Francis Adu-Mante.

    Why Civil action?

The Receiver appointed to manage the assets of the defunct bank is pursuing civil action against these individuals in an attempt to recover over 800 million cedis from them.

This includes recovering 468 million cedis as shareholders’ loans, 108 million cedis as outstanding facilities granted to Ato Essien and his related companies, and 51 million cedis from ICGC.

    Allegations of fraud

The Receiver alleges in court documents that the directors of the defunct bank approved loans and funds to themselves and related parties without adequate collaterals and in violation of the company’s internal policies, banking regulations, and Ghanaian company law.

Furthermore, the directors are accused of overseeing the disbursement of liquidity support (620 million cedis) granted by the Bank of Ghana in violation of banking regulations and Central Bank guidelines.

Legal proceedings related to this case are ongoing, and the High Court is set to hear arguments concerning the Receivers’ capacity to sustain the legal action, especially since the bank’s assets now belong to GCB Bank. The hearing is scheduled for November 21.

  • I left $270M in GIIF but Akufo-Addo has given it to his in-law to build Pullman hotel – Mahama

I left $270M in GIIF but Akufo-Addo has given it to his in-law to build Pullman hotel – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has alleged that an amount of $270 million earmarked for the Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) during his tenure has been inappropriately reallocated under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Addressing the media, Mahama argued that this financial resource is of great concern, as President Akufo-Addo has redirected these funds to support the construction of a Pullman hotel, a project by his brother-law.

“He has distributed some to his brother-law which he is using to build Pullman Hotel, it’s the money I left in GII. Stabilization fund, I left 300 million dollars with the aim of covering up for the economy should an unforseen circumstance occur,” he stated.

The former president emphasized that he had set aside this money prior to the conclusion of his term with the primary purpose of settling a debt incurred by former President John Agyekum Kuffour, which was scheduled for payment in October 2017.

” I left money sinking fund because I knew ex-president Kufuor’s euro bond will be due in October 2017, I thought it was to leave some money because not paying will have a toll on the economy. So I left money there, so when Akufo-Addo assumed office he took that money to pay the debt. I left 270 million dollars in Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) that was to be used as a vehicle to attract investments into infrastructure, but that money has been distributed,” he indicated.

Furthermore, he cited another critical rationale for safeguarding these funds was to provide a financial buffer for Ghana in case unforeseen circumstances should threaten the country.

Additionally, Mahama expressed astonishment at how the Akufo-Addo government managed to create a troubled situation, considering that it inherited a stable economy from the NDC administration.

The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed confidence that his party possesses the capability to rectify the challenges and corruption that have emerged during the Akufo-Addo government’s tenure.

  • Ministers will be reshuffled every two months under my presidency – Kennedy Agyapong

Ministers will be reshuffled every two months under my presidency – Kennedy Agyapong

A flagbearer candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has revealed his intention to conduct a ministerial reshuffle every two months if he becomes Ghana’s president.

He indicated that this will help combat potential corruption and ensure ministers remain diligent in their roles, as extended tenures might lead to complacency and misuse of power.

Mr Agyapong emphasized a zero-tolerance approach toward misconduct, asserting that any minister involved in corrupt practices would be immediately dismissed upon confirmation of their wrongdoing.

During an interview with the media, Mr Agyapong expressed dissatisfaction with infrequent ministerial reshuffles in the current Akufo-Addo-led government, believing it allows some ministers to act with impunity.

“I have a problem with that [irregular ministerial reshuffle], that’s why some ministers behave with impunity and I have a very big problem with that. For me my reshuffle will not be two or four years, I will do it every two months. If you don’t work well and you embezzle state funds I will fire you. If we don’t do that we won’t develop.

“If you want to sack someone then pastors, kings, and politicians would be pleading on their behalf. Sometimes even when you have set up your own company then politicians will be threatening you. You can’t do that in any country,” he said.

He underscored the need for regular reshuffling to hold ministers accountable and foster national development.

Mr Agyapong further emphasized that he wouldn’t succumb to pressure from influential figures when it comes to firing an appointee for misconduct, highlighting the importance of maintaining strict disciplinary standards.

The NPP’s primaries are set for November 4, 2023, with four contenders vying for the presidential candidacy: Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, former Mampong MP Francis Addai-Nimoh, and former Minister of Agriculture Dr. Owusu Akoto Afriyie.

  • My dream is to become a legal practitioner and not to do drugs; I need help – Drug addict appeals

My dream is to become a legal practitioner and not to do drugs; I need help – Drug addict appeals

A video showcasing a former Bishop Herman College student who achieved excellent results in his Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) with straight “1s” in most subjects but has since struggled with drug addiction has garnered significant public attention.

In the video, the remorseful individual, identified as Prince, openly acknowledged his struggles with drug abuse and delved into the factors that led him down this destructive path.

He recounted his journey, stating, “I went to Bishop Herman College on a scholarship from the District Assembly. I had straight ‘1s’ throughout, except for French, where I got a grade of 4 in Junior High. So, the District Chief Executive (DCE) invited me for a one-on-one conversation and encouraged me to continue my education. But I met a colleague, and this is who I am today.”

Despondently, he revealed how his aspirations of becoming a legal practitioner had been shattered by the devastating effects of drug addiction.

In his candid narrative, he outlined the dangerous progression from marijuana use to more potent drugs like cocaine.

He recounted: “I went to Bishop Herman College on a scholarship from the District Assembly. I had 1 throughout, but only French gave me a grade of 4 at Junior High. So, the DCE invited me one-on-one and told me to just go to school. I went to school and I met a colleague and this is me today,” he said.

“From the weed, you aggravate. You cannot just stand up and go to cocaine, you start from the weed and little by little, you get to cocaine. As I speak to you now, I have to spend GH¢ 500 every day on these drugs, and you must get it else you will not be able to experience even erection,” he said.

He continued: “You see what I do, I hate doing it. This is not what I wanted to do, going around picking scraps, no. I had dreams of becoming a legal practitioner but look at how shattered my dreams have become. Sometimes I see my teachers and I ask them why they didn’t tell us the effects of drugs. They taught me everything but not drugs. At least sensitise us on it. Perhaps if you guys converge for an assembly or meeting, you tell the students every day.”

Prince expressed his earnest desire to break free from the grip of addiction and voiced his need for rehabilitation.

Meanwhile, Pastor Elvis Agyemang, the convener of Alpha Hour, has made a significant contribution of GH¢12,000 to support Prince’s rehabilitation program, following the video’s circulation on social media.

Prince, in the video, had reached out for help from civil society organizations within the rehabilitation sector.

  • SSNIT Scheme’s membership reaches 1.8M – Minister for Employment

SSNIT Scheme’s membership reaches 1.8M – Minister for Employment

As of March 2023, the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Scheme in Ghana reported a total membership of approximately 1.8 million, according to the Minister of Employment, Labour Relations, and Pensions, Mr. Ignatius Baffour Awuah.

This figure highlights that around 8.1 million, out of an estimated working population of 9.9 million in Ghana, may lack any form of social security coverage.

Mr. Baffour Awuah emphasized the need to harness digitalization to expand social security coverage, addressing participants at the SSNIT – International Social Security Association (ISSA) Technical Seminar in Accra.

The two-day event, themed “Digitalization to Leverage Extension of Social Security Coverage in West Africa,” welcomed attendees from the West African sub-region.

The Minister noted that in Ghana, social security coverage has predominantly concentrated on the formal sector, which constitutes approximately 27.3 percent of the estimated working population.

“The overwhelming importance of digitalisation today is there for everybody to see. I call on social security institutions within West Africa to take advantage of the emergence of digital technologies to bridge the wide coverage gap,”

He highlighted that about 600,000 self-employed individuals now have some form of social security coverage.

The government’s digitalization agenda has played a vital role in delivering services to the public, with initiatives like the Ghana Labour Market Information System (GLMIS), a web-based repository of labor market data, facilitating job seekers and employers to interact efficiently.

Mr. Baffour Awuah mentioned that this system offers real-time labor market information to support evidence-based national development planning and robust social protection programs.

The government is also leveraging digital technology to introduce new software for the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA) to automate regulatory processes and ensure real-time monitoring to safeguard pension funds and investments.

This move aims to make NPRA services accessible remotely, saving both time and money. The enrollment process for the SSNIT Scheme has been simplified through the use of the Ghana Card, eliminating the need for multiple documents.

Despite the innovative steps taken in Africa to enhance social protection programs, the ISSA’s 2023 Report on Social Security Developments and Trends in Africa indicates that coverage remains relatively low, with only 27.1 percent of older individuals receiving old-age benefits and 17.4 percent of the population being covered by at least one social protection benefit.

Ghana currently hosts the West Africa Liaison Office for the ISSA, succeeding Ivory Coast, which previously hosted the office for several years.

Eric Seddy Kutortse, the man supporting Korle-Bu kidney patients by covering dialysis expenses

The topic of kidney disease and its related aspects, including kidney transplant and dialysis, has gained significant attention in the country.

This has captured the interest of influential figures in the country, notably the Parliamentary Select Committee on Health, which is already taking action in this direction.

Additionally, a committee has been established within the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to discuss ways to incorporate kidney disease treatment into their coverage.

Amidst the ongoing campaign, the commendable efforts of a Ghanaian businessman named Eric Seddy Kutortse have been brought to light.

Executive Chairman of First Sky Group, Eric Seddy Kutortse, has been engaging in philanthropic endeavors by covering the dialysis costs for kidney patients at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Bright Simons, in a commended Eric Seddy Kutortse as a discreet philanthropist who silently covers the dialysis expenses for underprivileged kidney patients at Ghana’s premier hospital.

He emphasized the impactful yet unobtrusive force of philanthropy in Ghana.

Dialysis, a critical treatment for individuals with kidney failure, plays a crucial role in removing waste products and excess fluids from the blood when the kidneys are unable to perform this function.

Information available from First Sky Group reveals a significant health financing program initiated in December 2016, enhancing access to high-quality essential healthcare services and medications through their free dialysis project at the Korle Bu Renal Unit.

The project began with an initial injection of GHC620,000.00 and an additional endowment fund donation of GHC2,000,000.00, and has disbursed a total of GHC20,000,000.00 as of December 2021 to support patients at the dialysis unit.

  • I’ll move to Ivory Coast should Ken Agyapong win Nov 4 elections – Maurice Ampaw

I’ll move to Ivory Coast should Ken Agyapong win Nov 4 elections – Maurice Ampaw

A private legal practitioner and social commentator, Maurice Ampaw, has expressed his determination to leave Ghana if the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, emerges as the presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an interview with the media, Mr Ampaw stated that Agyapong’s candidacy would not only be detrimental to the party but also to the nation as a whole.

He asserted his conviction that Agyapong stands no chance of winning the NPP presidential primaries scheduled for November 4, 2023.

“For me personally, if Kennedy Agyapong wins the NPP primaries, I will move to Ivory Coast and if John Mahama wins, I will go to Togo. I have already stated that there is no way Kennedy Agyapong can win.

“I cannot stay under Kennedy Agyapong’s presidency. I cannot fit into it. In the first place, he doesn’t have what it takes to be president. It will be a political disaster for the nation to even consider Ken as a presidential material to the extent that people would vote for him,” he said.

Maurice Ampaw further stated that Ken Agyapong does not have the markings of a president.

“That is not his area. He was created to fight for the poor not to become president. So, he has already done what he can. His is to fight for the poor and represent his constituency, he has finished doing this.”

He also mentioned that in the scenario where John Mahama emerges victorious, he would move to Togo.

He emphasized Agyapong’s lack of presidential qualifications and expressed concerns over the potential political disaster that his presidency could bring to the nation.

Mr Ampaw highlighted Agyapong’s strengths lying in advocating for the less privileged rather than aspiring for the presidency.

He concluded by suggesting that Agyapong’s nomination as the NPP’s presidential candidate would essentially pave the way for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to triumph in the 2024 elections.

  • Stop labeling NPP members who stormed UTV as thugs – Presidential staffer to public

Stop labeling NPP members who stormed UTV as thugs – Presidential staffer to public

Presidential staffer Dennis Miracles Aboagye has stated that members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who invaded the studios of UTV, are not to be labeled as thugs.

He emphasized that these NPP supporters did not engage in violent acts, attack UTV staff, or cause damage to the station’s property.

Mr Aboagye compared them to the #OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstrators, stating that the key distinction was the lack of prior notification to the Ghana Police Service regarding their actions.

“They are not hoodlums. They are identified individuals in the party leading their various constituencies… The only difference between them and the 37 occupiers (#OccupyJulorbiHouse demonstrators) is that they didn’t notify the police. That is the only difference.

“Those who did the #OccupyJulorbiHouse were they thugs. I think sometimes we shouldn’t cloud the substance with some of these descriptions. They were wrong; they were not supposed to have done it… But come on, we can’t superimpose descriptions and identities based on how we feel,” he said.

Mr Aboagye, who serves as the Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordination Committee on Decentralisation, emphasized that the NPP supporters involved were identified individuals within the party responsible for various constituencies.

He further clarified that they didn’t engage in destructive behavior or damage any property during the incident.

Mr Aboagye conveyed that he had spoken to the individuals involved, and they expressed regret for their actions, committing not to repeat such behavior in the future.

The incident at UTV occurred when some aggrieved NPP sympathizers disrupted the United Showbiz program, leading to condemnation from various quarters, including political parties, media, and civil society organizations.

CCTV footage was released by UTV, depicting the rough treatment of their technical staff by the group that stormed the station.

The NPP supporters’ actions were driven by demands for fair representation of the government and a halt to what they perceived as unfair attacks on the president and government officials.

Subsequently, sixteen individuals were arrested in connection with the invasion and have been released on bail.

Video: Social media buzzing over King Promise’s outfit to Wizkid’s mother’s wake-keeping ceremony

The Ghanaian artist, behind the hit song “Terminator,” King Promise, is facing significant criticism for his choice of attire at the wake-keeping ceremony for the mother of Nigerian superstar Wizkid.

In a widely circulated video on Twitter, the Ghanaian singer was seen donning a matching white denim jacket and white jeans with the phrase “Free the Youth” boldly inscribed on the back of his jacket.

His outfit received negative feedback from numerous music enthusiasts, particularly among his Ghanaian fan base, who believed that his attire was inappropriate for the occasion.

A portion of social media users remained indifferent, using the opportunity to reiterate their long-standing opinion that King Promise has consistently had fashion missteps, while others encouraged him to seek the assistance of a stylist to enhance his appearance.

Several other Ghanaian celebrities, including R2bees and Small God, were also in attendance at the event to show their support and condolences to Wizkid.

I cried and hugged him for 30 minutes – Joyce Blessing after receiving ‘victory’ song from Kuami Eugene

Gospel artist, Joyce Blessing has shared a touching story related to her new song ‘victory.’

The song, which has garnered attention for being composed and written by Ghanaian artist Kuami Eugene, has received praise from the public.

During her guest appearance on the October 14, 2023 episode of the United Showbiz program, Joyce Blessing recounted the events leading to her collaboration with Kuami Eugene.

Joyce Blessing went on to express her overwhelming emotions upon hearing the song for the first time.

She mentioned that she was so moved by the song that she ended up hugging Kuami Eugene for 30 minutes.

She also highlighted the fact that Kuami Eugene didn’t ask for financial compensation, a gesture she found particularly touching.

According to her, “I met with Kuami and he told me Unbreakable I have a song for you. Then I said okay and he asked him when to come because I know he’s a very busy person. We all became busy at some point until one of my team members asked me how far with my discussion with Kuami and I told him I’ve seen that he (Kuami Eugene) was in London but he told me to call him because he had seen him around.

“So, I called him and he said he’s been wanting to call me so it’s good I called him and he asked me to call him again in a week’s time because he’ll be done with the song. So, about a week or two’s time, he called and said he was ready and when can I come and I said I was ready even that day so I quickly rushed to his studio,” she narrated.

Furthermore, she revealed that Kuami Eugene also took on the task of directing the music video for the ‘Victory’ song.

In her words, “When I got there and listened to the song, in fact, I began to cry because the song touched my heart, and I hugged him for 30 minutes. I was so impressed with what he did because I know it’s not easy for an artist to write a song for a fellow artist, and I felt really grateful for how he gave me the song without seeking monetary gain and other benefits. He directed the video for the song; he handled everything for me regarding that particular song. I am truly grateful to Kuami Eugene.”

  • “No defecating for a week” – Lady shares struggles after butt surgery

“No defecating for a week” – Lady shares struggles after butt surgery

Social media sensation, Aba Dope, has shared the challenging experience she underwent during her butt surgery, aimed at enhancing her appearance.

In her detailed account, she described enduring excruciating pain during the surgical procedure and experiencing a one-week period of post-surgery constipation.

Although the butt surgery was deemed successful, her attempt to modify her facial features encountered complications, leading her to seek a reversal.

During an interview with the media, Aba Dope recounted the difficulties she faced in her pursuit of a more appealing physical appearance.

“I did surgery on my ass and breast, they removed the fats from my breast to reduce the size because it was too big to the extent that I couldn’t even wear a brazier. With my ass surgery, they took fat from my back, waist, and arms and placed it in my ass. I went through pain and couldn’t defecate for one week after my surgery.”

“There is a pill that we inject, if you buy it from London it costs like 50,000 pounds. When I inject it gives my mouth volume and makes it look bold. It lasts for three months then I’d have to take another one. I tried modifying my face; forehead and cheeks, but it didn’t go well, so I went back for them to take it off.”

“I think my surgery was worth it because from a flat ass to a voluminous one is okay. My ass used to be flat to the extent that I used to wear foam to give it a shape. I haven’t had any side effects, I would say I made the right choice with the right surgeon,” she said.

Aba Dope further emphasized that, despite the challenges, she considers her surgical transformations worthwhile because they have significantly improved her body compared to her previous appearance.

“I believe my surgeries were a worthwhile endeavor, as the transition from having a flat posterior to a more voluminous one has been quite satisfying. My posterior was previously so flat that I had to use padding to give it shape. Thankfully, I haven’t experienced any adverse effects, and I firmly believe that I made the right choice in selecting a skilled surgeon,” she concluded.

  • NPP’s letter to UTV is entirely justified – Manasseh Azure

NPP’s letter to UTV is entirely justified – Manasseh Azure

Prominent Ghanaian journalist, Manasseh Awuni Azure, has defended the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for writing a letter to UTV management expressing its grievances regarding the content of the United Showbiz program.

He stated that the station aims to satisfy its audience, and since the NPP is part of that audience, they have the right to voice their concerns for redress.

Manasseh Azure criticized the NPP-affiliated thugs who disrupted the program, emphasizing that their actions were unjustifiable.

He condemned the invasion of UTV by these individuals and suggested that UTV should address the concerns raised in the letter.

“Every media organization operates to satisfy the audience and the NPP members are audience or part of the audience of UTV and so you have to take it whether you accept it or not, it is feedback, you can always argue or even decide to ignore it but they have the right to approach you and tell you their grievances,” he said.

“There is nothing that justifies they [NPP members] going in there to try to force them to do what they want. Media organizations should have also distanced itself from whoever tore the letter on live television.”

He also called for media organizations to distance themselves from any acts of violence or disruptions during their broadcasts.

The incident in question occurred when alleged NPP-affiliated individuals stormed the UTV studios, leading to the abrupt halt of the live broadcast of “United Showbiz.”

The disruption of the show was related to a letter from the NPP expressing grievances regarding the program’s content and its handling by Kwame A Plus, a regular panel member on the show. The situation led to a chaotic scene within the studio.

Ghana has already made sufficient adjustments for debt treatment with External Creditors – IMF

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has clarified that Ghana does not require further adjustments to reach an agreement with its External Creditors for restructuring its $20 billion debt.

Instead, the onus is on creditors to reach an agreement with the country. The IMF is currently awaiting Executive Board approval for a second tranche of $600 million for Ghana’s $3 billion loan-support program.

Mr. Abebe Aemro Selassie, Director of the African Department at the IMF, stated this during a press briefing in Marrakech on October 13, 2023.

Ghana temporarily suspended some of its external debt, including Eurobonds, commercial, and bilateral loans in December 2022, and is now awaiting resolution with its external creditors to resume payments.

Mr. Selassie emphasized the need for action from creditors, stating that Ghana has fulfilled its obligations, and additional adjustments are not required from the government. The IMF remains committed to providing necessary information to expedite the process.

“Action is needed from the creditors’ side; Ghana has done its fair share, and it’s for creditors to take the next steps, and we’re not going to ask the government to do more adjustment because creditors haven’t asked either,” Mr Selassie said.

Mr. Selassie highlighted the relatively faster progress in Ghana compared to other countries, such as Zambia, in creating the Official Creditors Committee. He expressed optimism about concluding the upcoming review for the second tranche.

He praised Ghana’s progress in addressing macroeconomic imbalances, which were the root cause of the current crisis, under the $3 billion loan-support Post-COVID-19 Programme of Economic Growth (PC-PEG).

Ghana is currently participating in the IMF/World Bank annual meetings in Marrakech, where negotiations with external creditors are ongoing. The government expects to finalize agreements for debt treatment soon.

Economic indicators show signs of recovery and stability, with GDP growth averaging 3.2% for the last two quarters of 2023, a 0.2% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Inflation has decreased to 40.1%, and the Cedi has depreciated by 23.5% year-to-date compared to 2022.

  • Former MMDCEs submit petition to Akufo-Addo over unpaid salary differentials

Former MMDCEs submit petition to Akufo-Addo over unpaid salary differentials

A group known as the ‘Coalition of Immediate Past MMDCEs’ has submitted a petition to President Akufo-Addo, citing a delay in the payment of salary differentials.

In a statement issued by the group, it was expressed that the former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) from the previous administration have encountered obstacles in receiving payment for their accumulated salary differentials from the four-year period during which they served under the government.

The statement, signed by Mr. Leo-Nelson Adzidogah, the group’s leader and former MCE for Akatsi South, conveyed their concern about the matter despite adhering to all stipulated requirements.

“Your Excellency, with the greatest respect, we the immediate past MMDCEs deem it expedient to draw your high attention to the delay in the payment of our salary differentials which accumulated over the four years 2017 to 2021 that we conscientiously served your government.”

“Mr. President, since we wrote a letter of request for payment of the salary differentials, we have been told to prove whether we deserve the claim we are making.”

“We find it extremely unpleasant to draw the attention of your officials to the payment your government made to the NDC MMDCEs who left office in 2017,” the statement read.

The group contended that the NPP government promptly compensated former MMDCEs from the NDC regime, demonstrating the characteristics of a responsible government.

However, when it comes to their own appointees, the immediate past MMDCEs, the government officials in charge of MMDCEs have exhibited an unwarranted reluctance to fulfill their commitments.

The statement also emphasized that the procrastination in disbursing the MMDCEs’ payments is adversely affecting their strong commitment to contribute to the victory of the 2024 elections.

“Your Excellency, our families are currently enduring significant hardships. It is a challenging situation as we have limited means of sustenance.

The lack of recognition and respect for former MMDCEs within your administration is highly disheartening, concerning, and frustrating.”

As a result, they are respectfully appealing to the President for his timely intervention, expressing their desire to avoid further complications stemming from the delay.

Ghana has fulfilled its responsibilities, we are looking up to external creditors – IMF Africa Boss

The Director of the African Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Abebe Aemro Selassie, has indicated that Ghana has implemented the necessary measures to secure the much-discussed financing assurance from its external creditors.

He mentioned that the IMF is currently awaiting responses from the bilateral creditors.

Mr. Selassie made these remarks in response to questions from journalists after releasing Africa’s Regional Outlook Report during the Annual IMF/World Bank meetings held in Marrakesh, Morocco.

He emphasized the importance of action on the part of the creditors.

He explained,“I have to tell you that whereas it took something like nine months or more for Zambia to get the official creditor committee to be created, in Ghana’s case, it was fairly rapid.”

He further noted that “Ghana has done its fair share, and it’s for the creditors to take steps.”

Mr. Abebe Selassie revealed that the IMF will provide all necessary information for creditors to take appropriate action, allowing them to move forward and present the matter to the Board as soon as possible.

He expressed hope that ongoing discussions among official creditors would facilitate a swift conclusion to Ghana’s upcoming review, emphasizing that the recent mission had reached an agreement with the government on policies to address current issues.

“We will provide all the information necessary, so creditors can move, allowing us to go to the Board as soon as possible,” Mr. Abebe Selassie added.

Regarding Ghana’s First Programme Review and the IMF Board Meeting, it was announced on October 6 that the IMF staff had reached a staff-level agreement with Ghana on the first review of the Extended Credit Facility.

This was a result of discussions led by Mission Chief For Ghana, Stephane Roudet, to evaluate reforms and policy priorities within the context of Ghana’s three-year program under the Extended Credit Facility.

Ghana is expected to secure a Memorandum of Understanding from Bilateral External Creditors, enabling the IMF board to approve Ghana’s First Programme Review and disburse approximately $600 million in November 2023.

The IMF Mission Chief for Ghana indicated that as part of the creditor committee meetings, the IMF itself would move to approve the second tranche of $600 million once a deal is reached.

The IMF Board is scheduled to meet on Ghana’s program on November 22, according to sources knowledgeable about the country’s program in Washington, DC, USA.

Mr. Abebe Selassie described Ghana’s performance under the IMF program as satisfactory, expressing contentment with the progress made in implementing the program.

He noted that significant steps had been taken to address macroeconomic imbalances that were at the root of recent crises.

Regarding the Ghanaian government’s request for IMF support in combating corruption, Mr. Abebe Selassie acknowledged the request and indicated that once resources are available, they will provide the necessary technical assistance for governance diagnostic reports to address corruption-related matters.

November 4: Reject counsel of corrupt party leaders and support me – Ken Agyapong to NPP delegates

A flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has urged party delegates in the Western Region to disregard the counsel of certain corrupt party leaders when choosing their preferred candidate in the upcoming primaries.

Speaking at a rally in Takoradi, which marked the culmination of his high-profile Health Walk campaign, Mr Agyapong criticized these leaders, suggesting that their own corrupt practices prevent them from effectively criticizing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Agyapong also accused some NPP leaders in the Western Region of undermining his campaign during the Super Delegates’ conference, where he had a lackluster performance.

The “showdown Health Walk” event garnered significant attention in support of Agyapong’s presidential aspirations, drawing a substantial crowd in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis.

Supporters of Ken Agyapong expressed their enthusiasm through dance and song, affirming their belief that he is the best candidate to lead the NPP.

Addressing the rally attendees, Agyapong cautioned them not to make the mistake of voting for aspirants who might lead the party into opposition.

SIMMS SHS boys dormitory gutted by fire

Students of Simms Senior High School in Fawoade in the Kwabre East municipality of the Ashanti Region, have been forced to vacate their premises following a fire that engulfed the boys’ dormitory block.

The unfortunate incident transpired at approximately 11 am on Friday, October 13, while the students were attending classes.

No casualties were reported, but three out of the four rooms on the top floor of the single-storey dormitory block were engulfed by the blaze, consuming all belongings within.

Each of these rooms typically accommodates 42 students. Fire Service personnel swiftly responded, arriving at the scene within five minutes.

However, despite their prompt arrival, the fire had already rapidly spread due to the presence of highly flammable materials like mattresses and books in the rooms.

Ashanti Regional Fire PRO DO3 Peter Addai stated,“we had a distress call around 11.40am and by the time we arrived, three rooms had already been consumed by the fire. The fire spread quickly because of the flammable materials such as mattresses and books in the rooms. We did everything possible to ensure it didn’t spread to other areas”.

Fortunately, the fire brigade successfully prevented the fire from extending to one room on the top floor and the remaining four rooms on the ground floor.

As an interim solution, the displaced students have been directed to stay with their friends in the unaffected dormitory, while school authorities contemplate the subsequent course of action.

In the meantime, the Mampongteng Fire Station has initiated an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
