  • UGMC seeks support for advanced Clinical Trials Unit

UGMC seeks support for advanced Clinical Trials Unit

The University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) has commenced its fifth-anniversary celebrations by appealing to corporate Ghana for assistance in establishing its state-of-the-art in-patient Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) and clinical trials laboratories.

Dr. Darius Osei, the CEO of UGMC, emphasized the significance of this project, highlighting its potential to conduct trials safely in Ghana, adhering to international standards.

The establishment of a modern CTU would greatly contribute to Ghana’s progress by ensuring that medications prescribed for chronic diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer are suitable for the population.

UGMC has solidified its position as a leader in healthcare excellence, both in Ghana and globally.

Dr. Osei underlined the institution’s commitment to research, aiming to introduce new treatments and medical devices that will enhance the health of Ghanaians and the global community.

“The UGMC has embraced this challenge by creating the Medical and Scientific Research Centre (MSRC), which seeks to perform the necessary clinical trials and other research to bring new treatments–local and foreign to Ghanaians.

“To achieve this goal, there is an urgent need for a state-of-the-art in-patient Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) and clinical trials laboratories where the trials will be performed safely to international standards,” he said.

During its fifth-anniversary celebrations, the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC) aims to raise funds for the establishment of the first-ever Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) in West Africa. Dr. Osei, the CEO, highlighted UGMC’s remarkable progress in patient care, training, and research over the past five years.

Notable achievements include reaching a mutually acceptable ownership structure with the Ghanaian government, activating Phase II of the project through a commercial agreement, and significant infrastructural developments such as acquiring an MRI machine and Angiogram. Other investments include constructing apartments for clinical staff, a biohazard waste treatment building, a waste dumpster shed, and acquiring advanced equipment for the Medical Training Simulation Center and specialized units.

UGMC has expanded its workforce from 130 to 1,300 staff members, increased its specialist clinics from three to 40, and successfully performed open-heart surgeries, brain surgeries, catheterizations, and laparoscopic surgeries.

Through infrastructure development, specialized training programs, cutting-edge research, strategic partnerships, and community engagement, UGMC has evolved into a leading academic medical center in Ghana.

Dr. Osei appeals to individuals and corporate organizations to support the initiative, enabling UGMC to continue providing quality healthcare in Ghana and Africa.

Professor George Kyei, the Director of Medical and Scientific Research at UGMC, emphasizes the significance of the CTU.

Once established, it will enable scientific trials on herbal medicine, allow cancer patients to undergo trials and laboratory tests locally, and bridge the gap in personalized cancer treatments based on patient genetics.

Training more personnel, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and trial coordinators, is crucial. A modern CTU at UGMC would facilitate this training and address the urgent need for skilled professionals in Ghana.

Significant progress has already been made, with a dedicated space in the clinical building allocated for a modern trials laboratory. UGMC has secured a partnership with MDS-Lancet-Cerba to support advanced analyzers, and approximately 1.5 million cedis have been raised to prepare the facility for the analyzers.

  • Hollywood actors hit street to protest pay and AI

Hollywood actors hit street to protest pay and AI

Over 160,000 performers in Los Angeles halt film and TV productions as they join screenwriters in the industry’s largest shutdown in 60 years.

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) demands fair profit sharing and improved working conditions from streaming platforms.

They also seek protection against the use of digital replicas, ensuring actors are not replaced by artificial intelligence (AI).

During the strike, actors cannot participate in films or promote completed projects. At the premiere of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, stars like Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, and Emily Blunt left in support of the strike. Nolan expressed solidarity, stating that the actors were “off to write their picket signs.”

Actors, including Bob Odenkirk, Cynthia Nixon, and Jamie Lee Curtis, voiced their support on Instagram. Picketing will commence at Netflix’s California headquarters before targeting Paramount, Warner Bros, and Disney.

The major studios have proposed safeguards for actors’ digital likeness, requiring their consent for the use of digital replicas or alterations. However, the offer was rejected by the SAG, considering it unacceptable.

The strike’s impact affects ongoing film productions and limits the availability of actors for reshoots and other essential tasks. TV shows in production will also face significant disruption, although some arrangements may be made to allow limited work to continue.

Promotional events featuring top Hollywood stars, such as the Emmys and Comic-Con, might be rescheduled or scaled back due to the strike.

The AMPTP said the strike was “certainly not the outcome we hoped for as studios cannot operate without the performers that bring our TV shows and films to life”.

“The union has regrettably chosen a path that will lead to financial hardship for countless thousands of people who depend on the industry,” its statement added.

The union leading the strike is officially recognized as the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA).

One of the key demands from the streaming services is an increase in both the base pay and residuals for actors. Residuals refer to the payments actors receive from reruns or repeated showings of the films and programs in which they have appeared.

The strike encompasses tens of thousands of actors who are seeking fairer compensation for minor roles, as they currently receive significantly lower pay compared to their A-list counterparts.

“In the old model, they get residuals based on success,” Kim Masters, the editor-in-chief of the Hollywood Reporter, told the BBC. “In the new model, they don’t get to find out what’s going on behind the scenes, because the streamers don’t share.”

Fran Drescher, SAG’s president, said the strike came at a “very seminal moment” for actors in the industry.

“What’s happening to us is happening across all fields of labour,” she said, “when employers make Wall Street and greed their priority, and they forget about the essential contributors that make the machine run.”

Since May 2nd, a separate strike led by the Writers Guild of America, consisting of approximately 11,500 members, has been ongoing.

The Writers Guild of America has been on strike since May

The writers are demanding improved pay and working conditions. As a result of the strike, some writers have pursued non-contract projects that fall outside the agreement between the guild and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.

Korle Bu Hospital seeks Parliamentary approval for organ donation and harvesting

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has appealed to Parliament for the legislation on organ donation and harvesting, as the hospital has successfully initiated a kidney transplantation with two surgeries.

This program offers a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to dialysis, benefitting patients who previously faced the choice of costly treatments abroad or ongoing dialysis sessions.

CEO Dr. Opoku Ware Ampomah emphasizes the importance of a legal framework to support and regulate organ transplantation.

“I am pleased that we have reached the point where, instead of bringing in foreign experts to perform the procedures, our local services are being used. And the areas for transplantation are not just limited to the kidney; we are also looking at liver transplant, cornea transplant, and other organs that can be transplanted.”

“Ultimately, we also need enabling legislation to ensure that this is supported. This will allow for more transplantations to take place, so that we can ensure that most patients are taken off dialysis. This will also result in significant cost savings for individuals and the country as a whole,” he stated.

First Skyy Group provides support to the KBTH Kidney Transplantation Program by assisting patients with a payment of $21,000 per transplant.

Eric Seddy Kutortse, Executive Chairman of First Skyy Group, expresses the company’s support for the KBTH Kidney Transplantation Program, citing compassion for fellow human beings and a belief in using their wealth to support humanitarian causes as motivations.

Kutortse encourages others to join in similar gestures, emphasizing that investing in humanity is a pathway to continued blessings from God.

  • Tarkwa Municipal Hospital calls on govt for NICU

Tarkwa Municipal Hospital calls on govt for NICU

Authorities at the Tarkwa Municipal Hospital in the Western Region has urged government to provide the hospital with a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in order to provide adequate care for newborn babies in the municipality and beyond.

The current NICU, established in 2014, is unable to cope with the increasing number of newborns, leading to challenges in providing neonatal care.

Dr. Joseph Benjamin Baidoo, Assistant-in-Charge of the NICU, disclosed this during a donation event by the Tarkwa ‘February Borns Family’ (TFBF). The group contributed 200 bags of cement worth GH¢22,000 towards the construction of a new NICU block at the hospital.

Neonatal care is crucial for premature or sick infants, and the NICU offers specialized care for babies within the first 28 days of life.

Dr. Baidoo explained that the unit currently accommodates about four babies per cot, and the daily admission rate has increased from eight to approximately 20 newborns. However, there is only one incubator and one phototherapy machine available.

The planned construction project includes various sections such as a ward for babies, a preterm ward for premature infants, a neonatal ward, a breast milk expression room, a mothers’ hostel, a nurses’ rest area, consulting rooms, the head of department’s office, and a conference room.

Dr. Baidoo emphasized that neonatal babies often face heart, stomach, or oxygen-related issues, requiring specialized care in the NICU. The new facility is expected to enhance neonatal care and provide better accommodation for mothers, fostering a conducive environment for breastfeeding.

“We need to save new born babies from dying. The vision is not about new babies alone, it’s a whole menu of care we provide here at the unit,” he explained.

Dr. Baidoo expressed concern over the current situation where one cot is responsible for accommodating two to four neonatal babies, highlighting the potential risks of infections and increased mortality rates in the NICU.

He emphasized the crucial role of incubators in providing necessary heat for preterm babies in the unit.

In line with the goal of enhancing neonatal care, the hospital established a project committee in November of the previous year, chaired by Nana Twum of Brenu Akyenem. The committee, which includes members such as the Apinto queen mother, Nana Abena Boaduwaa II, and other staff, aims to construct a new NICU facility in Tarkwa.

Mr. Stephen Affum, Senior Administrator of TFBF, commended the efforts to promote neonatal care in Tarkwa and encouraged all stakeholders and philanthropists to support this worthy cause.

“We are happy that a land had been secured for this noble NICU projects. Let’s support this worthy course for the future of neonatal care in Tarkwa-Nsuaem and beyond,” he added.

Nkrankwanta receives rice processing factory from govt

Ministry of Trade and Industry, in collaboration with the Rural Enterprises Programme, have inaugurated a rice processing factory in Nkrankwanta, Bono Region.

The newly established factory will serve local farmers and contribute to the reduction or elimination of post-harvest losses in the area.

Additionally, a regional technology transfer centre was inaugurated in Dormaa Ahenkro, aimed at producing various machinery to support small-scale enterprises in line with the government’s initiatives.

The Nkrankwanta rice processing factory, operating under the 1D1F common user facility, was constructed at a cost of GH¢7.243 million. It is equipped with state-of-the-art rice processing equipment capable of producing 1.5 to 2.8 tonnes of processed rice per hour.

The facility includes milling and packaging machines, a standby generator, and a mechanized borehole for water supply.

Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, Michael Okyere Baafi, emphasized the significance of the 1D1F program in advancing the government’s industrialization agenda and addressing unemployment challenges.

He mentioned that 296 factories have been established under the initiative, with the Nkrankwanta rice processing factory creating 150 direct jobs and multiple indirect employment opportunities.

Baafi outlined the ownership structure, with farmers holding 70% shares, traditional authorities, assembly, and the Ministry of Trade each having 10% shares. He also inaugurated a nine-member board responsible for ensuring the proper maintenance of the facility.

The Director of the Rural Enterprises Programme, Akwasi Atta-Antwi, highlighted the role of the program in supporting micro and small enterprises in rural areas. He mentioned the establishment of rural technology facilities as a key achievement, promoting technology dissemination and transfer to the informal sector.

The 1D1F user facility is an agro-industrial factory aimed at enhancing the value addition of primary agricultural commodities, while the Dormaa Ahenkro Technology Solution Centre serves as a technical workshop for the development, promotion, and training of appropriate technology in micro, small, and medium-scale enterprises.

  • Reconstructing of Council of State building pegged at GH¢6m –

Reconstructing of Council of State building pegged at GH¢6m –

Council of State Office building frontage and certain aspects will be demolished and reconstructed at an approximate cost of GH¢6 million, according to the Acting Executive Secretary to the Council, Stephen Blay.

The building, which was completed in 2016 at a cost of GH¢4.6 million, has been deemed unfit for purpose and not constructed according to plan.

It faces challenges such as insufficient space in the meeting room and lacks privacy due to communication system issues.

Additionally, the facility lacks a sewage system and private facilities.

Mr Blay, addressed these concerns during a session with the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament in Accra.

“In 2017 when the 7th council took office it was discovered that the building was put up out of plan. The edifice over there doesn’t have a single suitable meeting room. The council is a 31-member council but the meeting room in the building has a capacity for only 15 people.

“Apart from that, the sewage system was never done. Then the communication system, when you are at the top and you talk, when people are on the ground floor, they hear all the things that you are saying. So the council felt it wasn’t appropriate to occupy it at that time,” he said.

Mr. Blay attended the committee session to address queries arising from the 2021 Auditor-General report on Ministries, Departments, and Agencies, which highlighted the unoccupied state of the council building.

In 2017, the Council of State invited the Ghana Institute of Architects to inspect the building, following concerns about its suitability. The inspection concluded that the building required remodeling.

Initially, the remodeling was planned for 2018-2019, but it was postponed due to the ongoing “drop-that-chamber” campaign, which made it impractical to demolish a portion of the building during that period.

In 2021, the Council submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Finance requesting GH¢6 million for the remodeling project, which was approved but the funds were not released.

Last year, the Council revisited the remodeling plan and engaged with the Chief of Staff and the Ministry of Finance, submitting proposals and a budget for their consideration.

Committee Chairman Dr. James Avedzi expressed concern and requested a copy of the assessment report from Mr. Blay.

Member of Parliament Samuel Atta Mills suggested that instead of demolishing part of the building, it could be allocated to the Zongo Development Fund, which sought an office space and was currently paying significant monthly rent. He further proposed constructing a new building for the Council of State, an idea that Mr. Blay agreed to communicate to the council for further consideration.

Street children’s rights suit to be decided on November 22

A seven-member panel of the Supreme Court is expected to deliver a judgment on November 22 regarding the constitutionality and legality of the presence and plight of street children.

The suit was filed by Child Rights International (CRI), a non-governmental organization, contending that streetism violates various articles of the 1992 Constitution, including those protecting children’s rights to education, health, human dignity, and social and economic rights.

Streetism refers to children living and working on the streets due to a lack of family ties or being caught in manipulative relationships where guardians exploit them for financial support through street-related activities.

CRI seeks several declarations and reliefs from the court, including a declaration that the Government of Ghana has breached constitutional articles by not taking prompt action to protect children from engaging in harmful work and ensuring access to healthcare and education.

The organization also requests the government to define penalties for child exploitation, improve healthcare provisions, establish procedures for free medical services, implement mechanisms to enforce education guarantees, and submit a plan of action outlining steps, strategies, and targets for compliance with the court’s orders.

Furthermore, CRI calls for periodic reporting to the court on progress made in adhering to the orders, with an initial report due two years after the final judgment and subsequent reports every six months until the completion of the three-year plan of action.

Nurses seeking to travel outside Ghana should not be intimidated – GRNMA

President of Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo has called on immigration officers to cease intimidating nurses and midwives seeking to travel abroad for better opportunities.

She disclosed that some nurses are being required to provide proof of resignation before being granted immigration clearance.

Ofori-Ampofo emphasized that such actions constitute intimidation and must be halted, as nurses have the right to travel freely to any destination of their choice.

Speaking to the media on Thursday, July 13, she said “If I have my passport, I have a visa and I have my ticket to travel and I am going through immigration, no immigration officer has any right to ask me of my resignation letter or any of such, it doesn’t work that way.

“People should not use any such means to intimidate our nurses and midwives who may be traveling, we are all Ghanaians and we all seek to live better lives. How I choose to do it is my decision.”

Admitting the detrimental impact of brain drain in the health sector, she stressed that healthcare delivery in Ghana is being adversely affected.

As a result, she urgently called for intervention to address this issue.

She explained that experienced nurses, who would have played a crucial role in training newly-recruited nurses, are the ones leaving Ghana in search of better working conditions.

Madam Ofori-Ampofo emphasized that nurses desire an environment that fosters career progression, enables further studies, and provides better salaries and benefits. Consequently, they choose to seek opportunities abroad.

Expressing her concern, she stated, “It is indeed a worrisome trend that we are witnessing. Our nurses are departing from Ghana in search of improved work environments and higher salaries.”

“It is their right and we cannot stop them but the truth of the matter is that as much as they are leaving it is having a toll on health service delivery in Ghana.

“The truth is those that are leaving are those that are well experienced, with many years of experience. Even if we are going to recruit new personnel these are the very people who would have trained them, so their leaving is a big issue.”

She added “It is about time we really sit as stakeholders to discuss this matter thoroughly. From where we sit, we know that we cannot stop them because it is their right to migrate but it is about time we put in some innovation in terms of motivational packages that will really attract or help to retain them in the country.

“There are some nurses who for various reasons will never leave Ghana but the majority are still nurturing the idea of leaving the shores of Ghana, it is all because they want to have better opportunities for career progression, they want to pursue some academic venture, looking for higher salaries or better conditions of service.”

Sports journalist, Saddick Adams, popularly known as Sports Obama, has issued a stern warning to Black Stars players, urging them to approach the 2026 World Cup qualifiers with utmost seriousness.

According to Adams, it is imperative for Ghana to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, and the Black Stars cannot afford to deny Ghanaians the opportunity to participate in the global tournament.

Adams emphasized that qualifying for the 2026 World Cup holds significant importance for Ghanaians, as the event will be jointly hosted by the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada.

Following the Africa draw for the 2026 World Cup, Adams revealed that his phone has been inundated with numerous messages from people inquiring about how they can attend and experience the tournament firsthand.

“The World Cup which will be played in Mexico, the US and Canada, you can go there as a player and miss a penalty in the final, Ghanaians won’t do anything. We just want to qualify.

“People have planned their lives since 2018 when they started telling me, they want to go and watch the World Cup and come back. It means a lot to Ghanaians and some people have started saving to go and watch the World Cup,” Saddick Adams said.

He emphasized that the World Cup is not merely about watching matches, but rather a tournament that possesses the potential to transform the lives of families and provide opportunities for Ghanaian youth.

He said, “This World Cup is not for football fans it’s for the general interest of Ghanaian youth. People have become interested in this World Cup. So, if you are a player don’t joke with this World Cup. If you know that you are old and can’t play retire.”

“There are travel and tour companies who have made plans for this tournament. People have become interested in the World Cup and want to support the Black Stars to qualify. Canada wants 1000 volunteers from Africa so we can’t afford to miss this. At least if they get 20 people from Ghana, they can change the destiny of their families forever,” he stated.

“It’s not only about going to watch the matches but it’s a year of massive emancipation,” the Sports journalist said.

7-member parliamentary committee to probe leaked IGP tape

The Parliament Speaker, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has instructed the establishment of a seven-member committee to investigate the leaked audio recording allegedly involving individuals plotting the removal of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

The committee will consist of three members from each side of the House, along with a technical expert.

The Speaker directed that the names of the three members from both the Majority and Minority caucuses be provided within one week, as of Thursday, July 13.

This decision comes shortly after Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah submitted an urgent statement requesting an investigation into the leaked recording. The Speaker requested a written version of the statement in order to make appropriate orders, which was accomplished on Thursday.

The committee’s mandate, as outlined by the Speaker, includes verifying the authenticity of the leaked audio recording, examining the conspiracy to remove the current IGP, addressing any other matters raised in the recording, and proposing appropriate sanctions for those found responsible.

Furthermore, the committee is expected to suggest reforms if necessary, and provide additional recommendations and consequential measures as deemed fit.

The leaked audio recording features voices purportedly belonging to high-ranking officials from the Ghana Police Service and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) discussing Dr. Akuffo Dampare. They express doubts about the IGP’s impartiality, alleging his support for former President John Dramani Mahama and scheming to facilitate the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) return to power before the 2024 general elections.

The recording has faced widespread condemnation, with calls for an investigation into its contents. Minister of Interior Ambrose Dery, however, dismissed the recording and reassured the public of Ghana’s peaceful electoral process leading up to and following the 2024 elections.

“There is no plot to remove anybody,” he told journalists in Accra on Tuesday, July 11.

“I can assure you that I serve a president who is committed and has respect for human rights. Under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, we will make sure that 2024 is peaceful.

“One thing to be sure, 2024 will not be a violent election by anybody and no one will want to thwart the will of the people. If you vote us in, you vote us in, if you vote us out, you vote us out.”

Taking selfies, others during praise and worship sessions invoke curses – Ohemaa Mercy

Gospel star, Ohemaa Mercy has emphasized the significance of attending and participating praise and worship session at church, stating that it is an essential experience not to be missed.

According her individuals who indulge in distractions like taking selfies and other disruptive behaviors during the sacred time of praise and worship invoke curses on themselves.

“You’ve taken up a curse,” she warned. “I’ll say it again. You’ve taken up a big curse because you’ve shown you don’t respect God,” she added.

In an interview with the media on Thursday, July 13, 2023, she explained that what ones needs can be found during this dedicated time of praising God. It is when we lift up God in praise that He bestows His mantle, glory, and answers upon us.

According to Mercy, praising God leads to His divine presence descending, followed by His servant delivering the inspired message.

“So if you really want to see the face of God, it is through the worship you don’t even believe in. It is the worship that you don’t respect or value and intentionally miss. If you indeed miss it and come in when the preaching starts, you’ve missed a lot,” the Ote Me Mu (He Lives In Me) hitmaker admonished.

Ohemaa Mercy said: “Thanksgiving is the one thing God desires from you because of the sustenance and protection he gives against the death [and other calamities] that come for others between Monday and Sunday.”

To support her point, Ohemaa Mercy shared an anecdote about being invited to perform at a church.

“…before they called me up on stage, there was worship going on [involving] everybody,” she narrated, “and God opened my eyes [in a vision] and I saw that there were some chairs that were empty and you know some people are in the habit of always sitting at a specific place. There was a particular lady – when I took the microphone I asked about where she was. I was told she was not present but not so long after that, she arrived – I was singing then. I told her: ‘You’ve really missed out’.”

Ohemaa Mercy said she explained to the woman how God had sent his angel to bring “your child to you but since you were not present, he took the child away”.

The thing about the praise and worship session, according to the singer-songwriter, is it is a time “one is open and receptive”.

“A lot of people miss out on their answers to prayers because they miss worship,” she said.

The multiple award-winning artiste bemoaned that “we’ve become too familiar with God, the Almighty, the I Am that I Am” meanwhile, “when we go before mighty human kings we show reverential fear”.

Binduri SHS Caterers resume cooking after receiving arrears from govt

Academic activities at Binduri Community Day Senior High School in the Upper East Region are set to recommence after the settlement of overdue payments to the school’s caterer.

On Thursday, July 13, students left the premises as the caterer declined to supply meals due to outstanding debts.

Within a remarkably short span of twenty-four hours since the matter came to light, Binduri’s Member of Parliament, Abanga Abdulai, confirmed to the media that the caterer has been remunerated and is scheduled to resume services today, Friday, July 14.

“I got the information about the failure of the caterer to cook for the students which resulted in the riot, and so we have taken steps and I can tell you that the caterer has mobilised resources and is back on campus to cook for the students.”

Additionally, he refuted claims that the entire school had been shut down due to the absence of food.

“It wasn’t closed down as such, but it was the first and second-year students who said they would not go to class if they did not have their hot meal because the form three students are still on campus and so it is just a matter of the authorities inviting them to come back to school to continue with their studies.”

In response to concerns regarding insufficient toilet facilities at the school, the Member of Parliament addressed the issue by assuring that steps are being taken to repair and equip the existing facilities to ensure their proper functionality.

“These are the E-blocks that were built during Mahama’s administration, and so they were meant to be day schools. So they didn’t provide enough KVIPs, but the Assembly provided them with a KVIP, and it has been completed except that they need to install some facilities in there so that they can use it and that is what has not been done, but it will soon be fitted with the necessary gadgets so that it can be usable.”

We will resort to other measures if you fail to halt TOR lease – Minority to govt

The Ranking Member on the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, John Jinapor, has emphasized that if the government disregards calls to halt the planned lease of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to Torentco Asset Management Group, the Minority Caucus will resort to alternative measures.

Under the government’s proposal, TOR would be leased to Torentco Asset Management Group for a period of six years, at a cost of $22 million.

The group is expected to refine approximately 8 million barrels of fuel annually. As part of the agreement, Torentco Asset Management Group would pay an annual rent of $1 million, in addition to a monthly rent exceeding $1 million.

However, during an interview with the media John Jinapor stated, “We will initiate various processes, both within the parliamentary and legal frameworks, to ensure that the appropriate actions are taken.”

Jinapor further emphasized the importance of the government exploring alternative and innovative approaches to revitalize TOR instead of proceeding with the lease to a private firm.

He stated, “We should rather think about something innovative that will bring the refinery back to speed.”

Jinapor urges government to pause lease agreement, seek stakeholder input for sustainable TOR solution, citing lack of benefit for Ghanaians.

  • I don’t hate Rev. Victor Boateng – Ablakwa clarifies

I don’t hate Rev. Victor Boateng – Ablakwa clarifies

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for the North Tongu constituency, has refuted allegations of a personal feud with Reverend Victor Kusi Boateng, Secretary to the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral.

Ablakwa clarifies that he does not personally know Rev. Kusi Boateng and holds no animosity towards him.

He emphasizes that his actions are solely based on parliamentary oversight and his campaign against the National Cathedral Board of Trustees’ secretary.

On July 13, the High Human Rights Court dismissed the contempt charges filed by Rev. Kusi Boateng against the North Tongu MP.

Speaking after winning the court case, the vociferous lawmaker clarified, “It is also to emphasize that at the height of this running battle with Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, it’s a conflict of interest discovery I made that while he sat on the board of the National Cathedral as Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, he made payments to an entity, JNS Talent Centre Ltd, where he’s a director in the name of Kwabena Adu Gyamfi, with a separate identity, hoping that he will not be found out.”

“People shouldn’t forget the background, because some people have sought to create the impression that this is some personal battle or somebody I don’t like. Not at all, I don’t know him from Adam, it’s nothing personal”.

Ablakwa hailed the court ruling as a triumph for truth and parliamentary oversight, stating that it allows him to proceed with investigations and publications.

In his exposé, Mr. Ablakwa claimed that JNS Talent Centre Ltd, allegedly owned by Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, received a payment of GH¢2.6 million for its involvement in the construction of the National Cathedral.

This payment was reportedly made under the pseudonym name Kwabena Adu Gyamfi. According to Ablakwa, documents in his possession indicate that Kwabena Adu Gyamfi is the same person as Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng, who continues to serve on the National Cathedral Board as an Executive Council Member/Director.

In response to the allegations, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng released a statement stating that Mr. Ablakwa’s claims were a “twisted narration of events” and expressed his intention to take legal action against the MP. Subsequently, Rev. Boateng filed an application against Mr. Ablakwa, but the charges were dismissed by the High Court in Accra.

Furthermore, in the most recent development, the Human Rights Court ruled today to dismiss the charges filed against Ablakwa.

    Background

Mr. Ablakwa in his exposé alleged that JNS Talent Centre Ltd owned by Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng was paid some GH¢2.6 million to help build the National Cathedral, under the pseudonym name Kwabena Adu Gyamfi.

According to him, documents in his possession reveal that Kwabena Adu Gyamfi is the same as Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng who still serves on the National Cathedral Board as an Executive Council Member/Director.

But in a response to the allegations, Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng in a statement said Mr. Ablakwa’s claims are a “twisted narration of events”, and threatened to take the MP on.

He later filed an application against the MP, in which the High Court in Accra dismissed the charges.

And the latest dismissal of the charges against Ablakwa by Human Rights Court was ruled today.

  • Rev.Victor Kusi Boateng and Kwabena Adu Gyamfi are different individuals – Court rules

Rev.Victor Kusi Boateng and Kwabena Adu Gyamfi are different individuals – Court rules

An Accra High Court has made a significant ruling stating that Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng and Kwabena Adu Gyamfi are operating as separate individuals.

Boateng, who serves as the Secretary and Board of Trustee member of the National Cathedral project, suffered a setback in his ongoing legal disputes with North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

The court’s ruling relates to a restraining order sought by Boateng to prevent Ablakwa from publishing his personal details and other related documentation, as the lawmaker has accused him of criminal behavior in connection with the Cathedral project.

On July 13, Ablakwa shared portions of the court’s ruling, declaring it a “legal victory for the masses” who have supported transparent and accountable governance through prayers and support.

Regarding Boateng’s dual identity, the court summary stated: “It has been proven that Kwabena Adu Gyamfi and Victor Kusi Boateng are two separate identities concurrently used by the Applicant, and the 1st Respondent’s claims that Victor Kusi Boateng is not an alias but another separate identity altogether are justified.”

“The way the two identities were used does not suggest a simple case of two different names, but rather two independent and totally separate identities to conceal applicant’s dealings in a manner that was not obvious, until the investigations and publications of 1st Respondent.

“Applicant’s assertion that the use of two names in the manner he has done is not a crime under our laws is misconceived, as the two identities were used in a pattern of duplicity depicting a lack of transparency and this conduct borders on criminality.”

    Read Ablakwa’s full post below:

The Human Rights Court has today dismissed Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng/Kwabena Adu Gyamfi’s application which sought to restrain me.

The court’s judgment was emphatic that my parliamentary oversight had unraveled two distinct identities in conduct which borders on criminality and therefore the application was dismissed for lack of capacity and locus standi.

The judge awarded cost of GHS10,000.00 against Rev. Victor Kusi Boateng/Kwabena Adu Gyamfi. This is the second time cost has been awarded against Kusi Boateng/Adu Gyamfi.

I dedicate this latest legal victory to the masses who have kept me resolute with their prayers and support for transparent and accountable governance.

I am indebted to my outstanding legal team.

2 down; 1 more to go in his defamation suit.

    For God and Country.

    Ghana First ????????

    Summary of Judgment

It has been proven that Kwabena Adu Gyamfi and Victor Kusi Boateng are two separate identities concurrently used by the Applicant and 1st Respondent is justified in his claims that, Victor Kusi Boateng is not an alias but another separate identity altogether.

The way the two identities were used does not suggest a simple case of two different names, but rather two independent and totally separate identities to conceal applicant’s dealings in a manner that was not obvious, until the investigations and publications of 1st Respondent.

Applicant’s assertion that the use of two names in the manner he has done is not a crime under our laws is misconceived, as the two identities were used in a pattern of duplicity depicting a lack of transparency and this conduct borders on criminality.

The Application was sought to be enforced under Article 33(1) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires an Applicant’s personal interest in the matter to confer locus standi.

From the record, it is not clear which of the two separate identities seeks to enforce its fundamental human rights by this suit. And once there is a clear case of double identity presented and proven before this court, this Application is dismissed for lack of capacity and locus standi.

Costs of GHC10,000 awarded against the Applicant in favour of the 1st Respondent.

UK visa application fees to increase – UK Prime Minister

Prime Minister for the United Kingdom (UK), Rishi Sunak, has announced the increase in visa application fees as part of efforts to address revenue shortfalls.

In an address at Downing Street on July 13, Sunak outlined government priorities, including reducing inflation, economic growth, and debt reduction.

He also mentioned a substantial pay award for teachers to prevent a potential strike.

To bridge the revenue gap, Sunak announced two measures targeting migrants as a means of generating necessary funding.

“We are going to increase the charges for migrants when they are applying for visas to come to this country and indeed something called the Immigration Health Surcharge, which is the levy that they pay to access the NHS,” he told the press.

The charges for visa applications and the Immigration Health Surcharge, which grants access to the NHS, will both be increased. These tax measures are expected to generate over a billion pounds in revenue.

“So, across the board, visa application fees are going to go up significantly… none of these fees have been increased recently and we think it is appropriate given that cost of everything has gone up,” he added.

Sunak justified the fee hikes by stating that they hadn’t been increased recently and that the cost of living has risen.

“So, across the board, visa application fees are going to go up significantly… none of these fees have been increased recently and we think it is appropriate given that cost of everything has gone up,” he added.

The Foreign Office will roll out the increases in the coming days and weeks. It’s worth noting that the United States recently raised visa fees for certain non-immigrant visa categories, a practice criticized for potentially exploiting applicants even in the case of rejected applications.

Dafeamekpor’s lawyers upset with CHRAJ’s inquiry into prof Firmpong-Boateng’s galamsey report

Lawyers representing Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, the Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, have expressed their displeasure with the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for requesting additional and specific information to bolster their petition.

The petition seeks an investigation into a damning report authored by Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, the former Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM).

CHRAJ directed the MP’s legal team to provide supplementary details to substantiate their petition.

However, the aggrieved lawyers have suggested that CHRAJ instead invite Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng to furnish the additional information themselves.

Speaking to the media, Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo, Dafeamekpor’s lawyer, said, “It is not the job of a petitioner to go and solicit persons with adequate requisite information for CHRAJ. CHRAJ has asked us to provide further and better particulars, but we have provided you with a complete report as we have. That is the extent he can go, the constitution mandates CHRAJ to use subpoenas to get the documents it so requires.”

“The petitioner is not the author of the report. Professor Frimpong-Boateng is the author of the report, and he has indicated that he’s ready to corporate with investigations. He’s the best source to get the right information, our work is done,” the lawyer said.

A letter to CHRAJ signed by Nii Kpakpo Samoa Addo, solicitor for Dafeamekpor said  “Prof Kwabena Frimpong Boateng is better placed to provide evidence of the allegations cited in his report, which my client seeks to draw your attention to as a subject matter for investigations by your good office”.

“This is an indication that Prof Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng is willing to provide the necessary assistance to your good office to investigate the damning allegations contained in the IMCIM report that he authored. Our client has discharged his duty as a concerned citizen by petitioning your good office to take the appropriate steps to investigate the allegations contained in the IMCIM report as mandated by the 1992 Constitution so to do.”

“It is the prayer of our client that your good office engages Prof Kwabena Frimpong Boateng who authored the IMCIM report to assist with investigations into the damning allegations made therein for which you seek better and further particulars,” lawyer for Dafeamkpor added in the letter.
