Let’s minimize criticism, pressure on EC and State institutions – Presby Clerk

Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Rev. Dr. Godwin Nii Noi Odonkor, has called on both politicians and the general public to avoid placing undue pressure on the Electoral Commission and other state bodies as Ghana approaches its December 7, 2024, elections.

Rev. Dr. Odonkor cautioned that excessive and unconstructive criticism could destabilize Ghana’s democracy and lead to heightened political tension, fear, and anxiety.

He also highlighted that such criticisms could negatively affect the individuals working within these institutions.

In an interview with Graphic Online’s Emmanuel Ebo Hawkson, Rev. Dr. Odonkor expressed concern over the undue strain being placed on these institutions and their staff.

“I think we are putting unnecessary burden and pressure on some of the institutions. Not just the institutions, but the persons who run those institutions. We should allow them to do their work.”

He criticized the ongoing unjust accusations against the Electoral Commission and other state institutions, arguing that these actions hinder the country’s democratic progress. Despite Ghana’s history of democratic success, he emphasized the importance of reducing pressure on these institutions.

Rev. Dr. Odonkor also commended the Electoral Commission’s decision to maintain the results in Accra and encouraged Ghanaians to be vigilant during the upcoming elections.

“I like it when the EC said that it can never change the results in Accra and that everybody should be so vigilant at the polling stations. We should drive this seriously into all the political parties and the public”.

Ferry Crew at Oti River resumes operations

Work has resumed on the Oti River ferry following its repair, despite the unfortunate death of a staff member involved in the process.

The team is calling on authorities to implement regular maintenance to avoid future issues.

Kofi Twee, who was working on the ferry’s malfunction on Friday, August 2, tragically died after becoming trapped by the ferry’s propeller while attempting repairs underneath.

Although the ferry is now operational for passenger and cargo transport, local residents are concerned about potential delays and are urging for a permanent solution.

Charles Awuranyi, Assembly member for the Dambai Central Electoral Area, told Citi News, “The ferry was fixed on Monday, August 5, so work is smoothly ongoing, we’re at post.

“The maintenance is temporary, it will develop faults in no time. Authorities should ensure proper maintenance of the ferry to avoid future occurrences.”

  • Govt overpriced purchase of 307 ambulances by $29M – Minority claims

Govt overpriced purchase of 307 ambulances by $29M – Minority claims

The Minority in Parliament has accused the government of inflating the cost of 307 ambulances purchased in 2019, claiming that the total expenditure should not have exceeded $25 million, based on a unit price of $80,000.

Chairman of the Government Assurances Committee, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has demanded a thorough investigation and prosecution of those responsible for the alleged overpricing.

He cited findings from the Auditor General’s 2022 performance audit, which flagged the procurement as problematic.

“The procurement of the 307 ambulances cost this country $54.3 million. The Auditor General has revealed if you go through the 2022 performance audit that that procurement itself is problematic. When you do the analysis, it was an inflated procurement because page 24 of the audit reveals that the unit price of the ambulance is $80,000 and yet we paid $54.3 million.

“$80,000 multiplied by 307, we should not have paid more than $25 million for this ambulance. And yet Ghana was made to pay a colossal, whopping $54.3 million as discovered on page two of the Auditor General’s report.”

Ablakwa also alleged that between 2020 and 2023, Service Ghana Auto Group Limited received 115 million Ghana Cedis for ambulance maintenance under dubious circumstances.

He pointed out that Stephen Okoro, a key director at the company and an in-law of President Akufo-Addo, is also linked to the President’s daughters through a long-standing business relationship.

“Then you need to also consider the fact that between 2020 and 2023, this company, Service Ghana Auto Group Limited, has been paid 115 million Ghana cedis in addition to the $54.3 million then the latest scandal, the intercepted letters of the Hon.

“Ken Ofori Atta on the 9th February 2024, a few days before he left office on the 14 February, he instructed that this $34.9 million should be approved and that his ministry would take care of $10 million and the National Health Insurance Authority should take care of the outstanding $24.9 million.

“A key director of Service, Ghana Auto Group Limited, is named, Stephen Okoro.  We have discovered through our parliamentary oversight, diligent parliamentary oversight, that Stephen Okoro is not just any Ghanaian or Nigerian for that matter. He is an in-law to President Akufo-Addo. Stephen Okoro has given President Akufo-Addo a grandchild.”

“This is a fact. And now in the corruption literature, politically exposed persons come under greater scrutiny. That is why when we were formulating the Office of Special Prosecutor Act, we included politically exposed persons.

“The other thing that makes Stephen Okoro so politically exposed is that we have discovered that he is a longstanding business partner of the Akufo-Addo daughters.”

Trainees at School of Hygiene to protest over unpaid arrears

The Coalition of Students from the Schools of Hygiene is calling for the immediate payment of their unpaid trainee allowances, which have been outstanding since January 2023.

This also includes a full year’s allowance for the 2021 Ho School of Hygiene certificate cohort.

The students, worried about the possibility of prolonged unemployment, have been informed by the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources that the delays stem from a lack of financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance.

According to Emmanuel Awuku, the Coalition’s General Secretary, the students are facing significant challenges and are pressing for immediate postings for those still awaiting deployment.

The Coalition has warned that if their demands are not met, they will proceed with a major demonstration.

“Tempers are rising among School of Hygiene trainees across the country and the urge to resort to a massive demonstration at the presidency and the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources is getting to its peak by the day.

“School of Hygiene trainees are also health trainees and remain constitutionally eligible to receive our trainee allowances but it seems stakeholders are using technicalities to push our people off the scheme of trainee allowance and we haven’t received an allowance for two years now and some have even completed without receiving a Cedi as trainee allowances.”

I have saved Ghana $1.3bn through my exposés against corruption – Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has revealed that his recent investigations have saved Ghana US$1.3 billion (GH¢20.2 billion).

In a post on X dated August 6, 2024, Ablakwa highlighted 10 issues he uncovered that had previously been overlooked by Parliament.

Ablakwa noted that the National Cathedral project alone saved US$400 million, while the SSNIT hotels saga saved an additional US$121 million.

Other notable exposures include questionable deals involving ambulance spare parts, transaction levies, and the West Blue contract.

“A breakdown of my Top 10 Parliamentary Oversight Exposés which have cumulatively saved Ghana a colossal US$ 1.3 billion (GH¢20.2billion).

“We shall keep fighting to defeat State Capture and blatant corruption,” his post read.

    Background

In recent times, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has focused on uncovering dubious deals and projects under the current government.

One of his significant exposes involved the ambulance spare parts deal, where he raised alarms about potential corruption and requested an investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor.

Ablakwa claimed the deal was rushed through by the finance minister just five days before his removal, with $10 million already disbursed to the company.

The Ministry of Health later clarified that the contract was originally signed by the now-defunct Ministry of Special Development Initiatives with Service Auto Group Ghana Limited, covering after-sales service and maintenance for 307 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 315 CDI ambulances procured by the government in 2019.

List of professional bodies meeting standards

The Office of the Registrar-General of Companies has reported that, as of July 31, 2024, 40 professional bodies are in compliance with their tax filings.

However, 43 professional bodies are not in good standing, 11 have been newly registered, and 73 have not provided contact numbers, making it difficult for the ORC to update their records.

Additionally, four professional bodies have requested removal from the register after achieving Chartered status through an Act of Parliament.

The ORC has urged all professional bodies in default to rectify their status by December 30, 2024. This requires submitting their filings along with a copy of their audited accounts, an updated membership list, and any amendments to their constitution.

Professional bodies that include “CHARTERED” in their names must also provide copies of their Charter granted by Parliament when submitting their annual returns and updating member certificates.

Those without a Charter should either obtain one promptly or change their names accordingly.

The ORC has provided a list of the companies involved:

Police arrest two women for trying to sell rotten fish at Nsawam

Two women have been detained for collecting rotten fish from a dumping site in Nsawam with plans to sell them.

A 30-foot container had disposed of the spoiled fish, which the women collected to smoke and fry.

They were apprehended at their homes, under suspicion of planning to commercialize the decayed fish.

According to UTV’s reporter from Nsawam, “National security arrested the two women on Friday, July 2, for taking rotten fish from the dumping site to sell. This followed a 30-foot container dumping rotten fish at the Adipa Zoom Lion site.

“The two women took it to Nsawam market for sale, smoking and frying some of the fish. However, after their arrest, they claimed it was for personal consumption.”

Investigations are ongoing, and the two women have been released on bail.

Turn down bribes from NPP on voting day – Prof Opoku-Agyemang to Ghanaians

The running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has urged voters to reject any attempts by the ruling party to buy their votes.

She cautioned that such bribes only lead to greater hardships and prevent meaningful progress and improvements in quality of life.

During a community durbar at Budumbram in the Gomoa East constituency on Monday, as part of her three-day campaign tour in the Central Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that state funds should be directed towards job creation for the youth, not used for vote-buying on election day, a tactic she accuses the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of planning.

“The money they will bring cannot sustain you for a day, and such money cannot build your polyclinic, it cannot construct your road, and it cannot also fix the deplorable school buildings that threaten the lives of your wards; the 200, 500 Ghana cedis cannot fix them,” she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted that true governance involves implementing policies that enhance the lives of all Ghanaians.

She pointed to the NDC’s commitments, such as the 24-hour economy, the Women’s Development Bank, and the Big Push policy for extensive infrastructure development.

She called on voters to support NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama and Gomoa East parliamentary candidate Desmond De-Graft Paitoo in the upcoming December 7 elections to drive meaningful development in the area.

Heavy police presence at Bawjiase following fatal shooting incident

More than 100 police officers, under the leadership of Central East Regional Police Commander DCOP Owusu Bempah, have been dispatched to the Bawjiase community.

This move comes after a young man was shot dead on Monday, August 5, just ahead of the chief’s outdooring ceremony scheduled for Tuesday.

Reports indicate that a group of motorbike riders raided the chief’s palace in an attempt to disrupt the ceremony.

Nai Kwame Korabi Opeikuma IV, the Gyasehene of Awutu Bawjiase, confirmed the incident to Adom News.

In response to prevent further violence, the police have increased their presence in the area to ensure the safe outdooring of the new chief, Nai Kwaku Osardu.

3 Ghanaians and a Chinese arrested for allegedly tampering with ECG meters

Police have detained four individuals, comprising three Ghanaians and a Chinese national, for their roles in tampering with and installing meters from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Wisdom Sewlorm, an agent assigned to install ECG meters, saw his employee, Ernest Afatsawu, manipulate the meters and sell them to a Chinese plastic manufacturing company for GH₵1200.

Rulian Shan, the manager of the Chinese company, and his sales manager, Ali Yakubu, were apprehended on Friday, August 2.

Both Ernest and Wisdom are currently under investigation following their summons.

The ECG estimates that the financial loss due to this incident amounts to over GH₵77,000 from July to August.

Paul Abariga, Director of Investigation, Prosecution, and Security, revealed that the four suspects are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday. Additionally, the contract with the implicated ECG contractor will be terminated.

Abariga stated, “There are meters that are being installed in many parts of our operational area and there have been some investigations reported to this directorate that some of the meters that are being installed are tempered with before they are installed so we undertook investigations, and we’ve come to realise that the intel that we’ve gathered, and the reports given to us are certainly true.

“Based on that we got for instance these four people arrested on four. They had a meter that was supposed to be residential and they were using it in a factory to manufacture plastic bowls at Oblogo near Weija.”

“So we want to put all the four together. By the end of the day we would have finished with our investigations on them so that we put them before court tomorrow”.

Angry residents force suspected thief to swim in filthy gutter

Furious residents in a local neighborhood took drastic measures after catching a motorbike thief in the act.

The thief was seized by an enraged mob and subjected to an unusual punishment: he was made to swim in a clogged gutter as retribution for his crime.

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident occurred early in the morning when the thief attempted to steal a motorbike parked outside a residence.

The motorbike’s owner noticed the suspicious behavior and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents.

A crowd quickly assembled, capturing the thief before he could flee.

The thief was then dragged to a nearby gutter filled with trash and stagnant water, where he was compelled to wade through the filthy liquid as a warning to others considering similar crimes.

  • Let’s unite to achieve 75% of votes in Akuapem North – Sammi Awuku to NPP

Let’s unite to achieve 75% of votes in Akuapem North – Sammi Awuku to NPP

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku, is mobilizing supporters with a goal to secure 75% of the vote in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

He emphasized that achieving this target would solidify the NPP’s dominance and advance the party’s mission of breaking the eight-year governance cycle—a milestone yet to be reached in Ghana’s Fourth Republic.

During the ‘Mega Ofie Walk’ at Mampong Coronation Park on Saturday, August 3, 2024, Mr. Awuku underscored that reaching this goal would ensure a decisive victory for the NPP, particularly when combined with similar successes across other constituencies in the Eastern Region and beyond.

Recalling the 2020 elections, where the party garnered 65% of the popular vote with former candidate Dokuah Asiamah Agyei, Mr. Awuku urged the crowd to build upon this achievement.

He encouraged supporters to work diligently to surpass this performance and fortify the NPP’s stance against the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“With your support, we can build on our past achievements and make the goal of breaking the eight-year governance cycle more attainable,” he said.

Mr. Awuku framed the 2024 general elections as a pivotal choice between progress and stagnation, urging voters to consider which party best aligns with their interests.

“Elections have profound implications for our future. A vote for the NDC is a vote for regression. The NDC will undo the solid foundations laid by the NPP, as they have done in the past.”

He expressed confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s ability to introduce innovative policies in the next government and acknowledged the current economic challenges faced by Ghanaians.

“Ghana has been fortunate to have had excellent leadership managing the economy through the challenges of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war. Signs of economic recovery are clear, and soon Ghanaians will enjoy the benefits they have been waiting for,” he said.

The event saw the presence of prominent figures including Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, NPP Chairman Stephen Ayesu Ntim, Eastern Regional Chairman Jeff Konadu, Eastern Regional Minister Seth Acheampong, National Women’s Organiser Kate Gyamfua, and several parliamentary candidates.

Market women at Winneba didn’t abandon Prof Opoku-Agyemang – Campaign team

The Campaign Team for Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has rebutted allegations that she was deserted by market women in Winneba.

Reports had suggested that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang abandoned the Winneba market, but her team has labeled these claims as entirely false and unfounded.

In a statement released on Monday, the team remarked, “The publication is false, baseless, and a figment of the fertile imagination of its author.”

“For the records, Prof. Jane Opoku-Agyemang on Friday had a very successful campaign tour of Winneba in the Effutu constituency. She visited market women in their shops and stalls at the Winneba market, and interacted with shoppers and lorry drivers, amongst others, amidst cheers and encouragement from the public.

“She also drove through some principal streets of Winneba and was given a rousing welcome.”

The team also noted that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was warmly welcomed during her drive through the main streets of Winneba.

During a rally at the Winneba Lorry Station, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the benefits of NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama’s 24-hour Economy policy and the forthcoming Women’s Development Bank initiative, which aims to support approximately one million women in business.

The campaign team emphasized that the Member of Parliament for Effutu was not present at the Winneba market at the same time as Prof. Opoku-Agyemang.

“At no point was the Member of Parliament for Effutu present at the same place and time that Prof Opoku-Agyemang was at the Winneba market,” it added.

They have called on Ghanaians to disregard these unfounded claims.

The Campaign team has therefore urged Ghanaians to disregard such claims.

  • My NPP friends want the party out of power because it has been hijacked – Mahama

My NPP friends want the party out of power because it has been hijacked – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has disclosed that some members of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) are privately hoping for the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

Mahama claims that these NPP supporters feel the country is being dominated by a small, exclusive group at the expense of the general populace. He indicated that these disillusioned NPP members are advocating for his return to the presidency as a means to allow the NPP to restructure and regroup.

Speaking to party supporters during his tour of the Upper East region, Mahama stated, “These are NPP people because the NPP has been captured by a small group of people. This is not Kufuor’s NPP. This is a different NPP. It has been hijacked by some people and so the democrats and others in NPP want the party to lose. So that they can go back into opposition and reorganise.”

Mahama also compared Ghana’s economic difficulties to those in other African countries, describing the situation in Ghana as more severe.

He pointed out that while there are protests in Nigeria and Kenya due to limited opportunities.

“Many people in Nigeria are on the streets demonstrating. You heard about Kenya, Kenyan youth are demonstrating because opportunities are not opening up for them. The situation in Ghana is worse,” he said.

  • Founders’ Day has lost its purpose – CenPOA

Founders’ Day has lost its purpose – CenPOA

The Centre for Public Opinion and Awareness (CenPOA) has criticized the August 4 Founders’ Day, introduced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), arguing that it has led to confusion and division and should be abolished.

Executive Director of CenPOA, Michael Donyina Mensah, contends that the holiday, intended to unify the nation, has instead created discord and distorted Ghana’s history.

He emphasized that Ghanaians generally accept August 4 as Founders’ Day without issue, as the country continues to develop and unify. However, he argues that using the holiday to undermine Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s role as Ghana’s founder is misleading and dishonest.

Donyina’s comments respond to President Akufo-Addo’s rejection of Kwame Nkrumah’s role as the founder of Ghana. While acknowledging that other figures contributed to Ghana’s independence, Donyina criticized the President’s remarks for misrepresenting the historical facts and the purpose of the holiday.

“However, if you want to use the Founders’ Day celebration as a means to discredit Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and state categorically that he was not the founder of Ghana, then this is dishonesty, disingenuous, and a distortion of our history. I will disagree with you on that,” he said.

He also highlighted the need to review and possibly revise Ghana’s holidays to better reflect national identity and unity.

“The idea behind the introduction of August 4 was good, but in recent times, it seems the holiday has lost its focus and is no longer serving its purpose. So as an organisation, we are proposing for it to be scrapped. In the future, when a new administration takes over, we want the holiday to be scrapped. This is because it doesn’t represent any unity; rather, it is bringing division and disagreements among Ghanaians. The holiday also represents the disagreements and confusion that came up in the past during the independence struggle.

“The agenda should be about unity. But the way President Akufo-Addo is misrepresenting the facts and history is troubling. So August 4 can no longer represent its purpose of uniting the country. The founders are supposed to come together in unity to build the country, but if this holiday is beginning to represent division and confusion, then it is something we have to do away with. We are proposing that when a new administration takes over, they should probably find a better alternative to replace this holiday because, as it stands now, this holiday cannot serve any useful purpose.”

Mr Donyina criticized the current holidays for being tied to the colonial past and advocated for celebrations that truly define Ghanaian identity and milestones.

In conclusion, he urged the next government to consider abolishing the August 4 holiday, as it has become a source of controversy rather than unity.

“Several of the holidays are linked to our colonial past. We are moving forward, and so we should have holidays that define us as a people. I strongly opined that our Independence Day celebration should define our struggle for independence and Founders Day. But to create multiple holidays for various activities leading to our independence is needless and a waste. The holidays should be nationalistic, celebrate certain important milestones, and also last forever.

“I want to stress that, going into the future, the August 4 holiday will not serve any useful purpose in Ghana because President Akufo-Addo has ended up surrounding it with confusion. So we are appealing to the next administration to scrap the holiday when they take over. We will petition a new government to scrap it,” he said.

About 53% of babies aged 0 to 5 months engaged in exclusive breastfeeding – Survey

The 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS) reveals that 53% of infants aged 0 to 5 months in Ghana were exclusively breastfed, indicating that 47.4 per cent of babies are not.

The survey highlights that the rate of exclusive breastfeeding among children under 6 months has seen minimal change over the past 20 years, with only a slight increase of 0.8 percentage points from 46.6% in 2003 to 47.4% in 2022.

Additionally, it was found that 41.8% of children born in the two years prior to the 2022 GDHS did not start breastfeeding within the first hour of life.

“In three regions, more than half of the children did not start breastfeeding within the first hour of life: Greater Accra (56.2%), Ahafo (56.1%), and Eastern (51.7%). The region with the lowest percentage that did not initiate breastfeeding within the first hour was Bono East (29.4%) followed by Volta (31.6%),” a part of the survey released by the Ghana Statistical Service in commemoration of World Breastfeeding Week further read.

‘Agyapadie’ document is an evil scheme devised by few Kyebi individuals – Ohene Agyekum

A former Ambassador to the United States under the John Evans Atta Mills administration, Daniel Ohene Agyekum, has labeled the Agyapadie document as a blatant example of state resource capture.

He suggested that the document consolidates the nation’s wealth into the hands of a select few.

Despite President Akufo-Addo’s denial of the document’s authenticity, former President John Dramani Mahama believes its contents have been implemented.

Speaking at a press conference in Kumasi, Ohene Agyekum asserted that the document is genuine and signifies a sinister plot by certain individuals to seize Ghana’s resources.

“This document is authentic and it represents a very diabolical scheme by a small group of individuals from Kyebi. My understanding when people talk about the Akyem mafia is that it is wrong because I will argue that it is Kyebi mafia.”

Ohene Agyekum also warned that the Agyapadie document sets a dangerous precedent for Ghana’s future.

He emphasized that it is not just an administrative guideline but a blueprint for the capture and monopolization of Ghana’s resources by a privileged group.

UCC governing council chairman must be removed – NPP PC to Akufo-Addo

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Cape Coast North, Horace Ekow Ewusi, has petitioned President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to remove Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi from his position as chairman of the University of Cape Coast governing council.

In his petition, Ewusi argues that Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi’s actions are disrupting the university’s operations, necessitating his removal for the institution’s benefit. He claims that the chairman is pursuing a personal agenda detrimental to the university’s management.

“I humbly write to bring to your attention the disturbing conduct of the Chairperson of the Governing Council of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof. Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, which is affecting the smooth running of the University and further petition your high office to investigate same and further humbly request for his removal.

“This request is being made as a final resort after numerous efforts by the eminent of the community, including myself to request him to conduct himself as a seasoned statesman and responsible Chairperson of a highly esteemed institution as the University of Cape Coast has proved futile. Although the Chairman may be seen as a party person and professional, his conduct clearly demonstrates that he is seeking a personal agenda than the one that he was brought in for which is the collective interest of the University thereby affecting our chances of winning the seat,” portions of the petition read.

Mr Ewusi criticized the chairman of autocratic decision-making, lacking a fundamental understanding of corporate governance, and acting as an executive chairman by making unilateral decisions without consulting the University Council members.

“He has repeatedly taken it upon himself to make unilateral decisions, including solely responding to a petition on an advertisement without seeking input from other members of the Governing Council. Additionally, he has clashed with two major unions (UTAG and GAUA), the convocation and the Board of convocation of the University. Attached as Appendix 1 to 3 are copies of the responses written by Prof. Harold Amonoo-Koufi to these bodies.”

Furthermore, Mr Ewusi accused Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi of consistently targeting the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong, creating significant tension and division within the university community.

“Faculty and staff of the University, who form the base of our party, have expressed concerns about the sudden turn of events since Prof. Harold Amanoo-Kuofi assumed office and the potential impact this has on the University’s reputation.”

On August 2, Prof. Amonoo-Kuofi issued a notice announcing the termination of Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor of UCC.

Achimota Land: We will resist eviction by private developer – UG staff, other residents

University of Ghana (UG) staff and other residents near the Achimota Police Station have pledged to resist eviction attempts by an unidentified private contractor.

This pledge follows a Sunday morning incident where land guards, described as such by witnesses, demolished homes and makeshift structures on the land with police present.

Chairman of the University of Ghana Branch of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), Benjamin Nkumsah, stated that these demolitions were carried out by thugs and land guards, accompanied by police officers.

Speaking to Channel One News, Mr kumsah demanded an immediate halt to the eviction process and called for the intervention of Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akufo Dampare.

The residents are advocating for their rights to be respected and are seeking an immediate stop to the evictions.

They are also demanding clarity on the identity of the private contractor and the legality of the demolition.

“I also heard this incident around 12 am. I had a call from our staff [University of Ghana staff] in Achimota. So, they called that there’s this demolition exercise happening at their residence so quickly we had to also mobilise and come and ascertain what’s happening.”

“What’s happening is that someone is putting up a building here, I don’t know who the building belongs to, but all of a sudden, they came around 12am to come and do a demolition exercise here. And I’m told that the people that came, police were there, pistols were mounted, even they were shooting around the places, so we are seeing this as an incident the State is aware which we are calling on IGP.”

“You cannot come to somebody’s residence around 12 to destroy the place, even people were in with family, at least respect the people.

“So, we are asking that whoever is in charge of this building put a stop, if not, we’ll also resist any attempt to evict our people here.”

Nigeria’s treasury bills yield rises to 25.3%

The average yield on Nigerian treasury bills has climbed in the secondary market due to ongoing negative trading, driven by a risk-averse attitude toward naira assets amid nationwide protests.

Investor interest waned following recent price movements in the 364-day bills at last week’s primary market auction. During this auction, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) reduced the rate on one-year bills after making adjustments to the monetary policy rate.

This change prompted a market reaction characterized by a surge in selling of naira bills, pushing the yield curve above 25%.

On Thursday, the secondary market closed on a bearish note as selling pressure persisted and expectations for yield adjustments continued.

According to fixed interest securities traders, the average yield on Nigerian Treasury bills rose by 14 basis points to 25.3%.

Cordros Capital Limited noted that while yields contracted slightly at the short (-1bp) and mid (-2bps) segments, the long end of the curve saw a significant increase (+31bps), driven by selling pressure on the 266-day bill (+213bps).

Additionally, there was an increase in demand for the 84-day bill, which saw its yield rise by one basis point, and a decrease in the yield for the 175-day bill by 2bps. In the OMO segment, the average yield fell by 2bps to 25.3%, as reported by traders.

I am the victim, Mahama is playing the victim card – Koku Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has rejected claims that he harbors animosity toward the party’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

In an interview with Metro TV, Mr Anyidoho countered the allegations of victimization, asserting that he is the true victim in their ongoing political dispute.

He accused Mahama of orchestrating a campaign to have him removed from his position, revealing that individuals such as Martey Newman, Omani, and Uncle Ato had informed him of Mahama’s suggestion that he should resign.

He also recounted receiving multiple calls from various people urging him to take a leave of absence.

Mr Anyidoho remarked that such a leave would have made it difficult for him to return to his role, suggesting that Mahama’s real intention was to force his removal.

“Mr Newman, I have never said this story but after 12 years to the extent that you people continue to sit down and let Mahama and let boys play the victim card as if I am the bad person, Mr Newman, after 12 years I am mentioning your name, uncle Ato I am mentioning your name because I will not allow them play the victim as if I am the bad person.

“I have always been the victim but for the sake of cohesion I have kept quiet. But after 12 years I will mention the names and let the whole world know that the victim that Mahama is playing is fake. I am the real victim. Martey Newman tells me that John Mahama says that he cannot work with me so I should leave the presidency. At that point I said well Omani has told me, Uncle Ato has told me, Martey Newman you are telling me, so I said please go and tell the president that I am not going on leave and I am not leaving the presidency because we have an election to win and I have to protect the legacy of Atta Mills. Me going on leave was a ploy by Mahama to sack me,” he added.

Electric vehicles will slash transport fares by 40% – Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged a reduction in public transportation costs by at least 40% before the December elections through the introduction of electric vehicles.

During his address at the Ofie Mega Walk in Akropong, Dr. Bawumia outlined a transition from traditional diesel, gas, and petrol-powered public transport to electric vehicles.

He emphasized that the transition to electric vehicles will significantly cut transportation costs, projecting a reduction of at least 40%.

The electric buses are expected to arrive before the elections, ensuring the cost savings are realized promptly.

“I’ll change the dependence on oil and gas for fuel on public transports from diesel and petrol, we are moving to electric power, we are moving to electric vehicles. We are adding one-wheelers, two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

“We are already done with the estimates on the electric vehicles and fortunately, the buses will be in before the December election. This will enable the cost of public transportation to decrease to at least 40 per cent.”

  • Banking cleanup will cost 34bn and not GHS25bn – Nii Lante Vanderpuye

The Member of Parliament for the Odododiodio constituency, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has indicated that the government will spend nearly thirty-four billion Ghana Cedis (GHS 34,000,000,000) on its financial sector cleanup and not twenty-five billion Ghana Cedis (GHS 25,000,000,000).

The former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta had estimated that the total expenditure on the financial sector clean-up to GH₵25 billion.

However, addressing members of parliament Nii Lante Vanderpuye explained that the earlier estimation by the finance ministry must be adjusted as there are other factors that must be considered.

He mentioned that 61,000 customers of the collapsed Gold Coast Fund Management expect a compensation from government.

According to him, settling each victim will amount to close to nine billion Ghana Cedis (9,000,000,000).

He concluded that adding that to the initial amount (GHS 25,000,000,000) will cost the government GHS 34,000,000,000.

“We were in this house when the former minister told all of us that they are done with the banking sector cleanup and it has caused the state 25 billion. Considering the fact that these 61 customers are yet to be paid if you calculate and according to them and their petitioner, they are owed close to almost about 9 billion, if you add that to the  25 billion that the minister of finance indicated to us that we spent on the banking sector cleanup, it means that we are going close to 34 billion cedis in that exercise,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Special Committee investigating these customer claims, Joe Ghartey, informed urged government to honor its pledge to reimburse the investors.

“We urge government to do its part in terms of prosecuting the matter and following it in court so that the question of whether they should be liquidated or not will come to an end so that further payments can be made,” he said.

The Committee also recommended incorporating insurance into these financial measures to avoid the government bearing the financial burden of institutional failures.

“We recognise the fact that this House passed the Ghana Deposit Protection Act 2016, and it was passed to protect depositors. We cannot continue at this rate where people set up financial institutions and then they collapse and the last resort is government.

“The government cannot continue being a guarantor between institutions and the people of Ghana. Therefore, one way to go around this is for us to insist that when you are making such investments you take insurance,” he noted.

Upper East: My administration will revive, complete projects left abandoned – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has voiced frustration with the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration for neglecting several key projects from his tenure.

Speaking at the Bawku Naba Palace in the Upper East Region, Mr. Mahama pledged to resume and complete these stalled initiatives, asserting that they are vital for driving development and addressing unemployment.

He criticized the abandonment of several projects, including the Garu hospital, which has been inactive since 2015, and the Bolga-Bawku-Pulmakom road, also left unfinished since 2015.

He also pointed to the incomplete Eastern Corridor project, originally envisioned by Prof. Mills and continued during his administration.

Mr. Mahama promised that, if elected, he would prioritize these projects, highlighting their potential to enhance living standards and foster economic growth.

He reassured the people of Garu that the abandoned hospital would be completed, emphasized the need to finish the Bolga-Bawku-Pulmakom road, and pledged to advance the Eastern Corridor project.

“There have been many issues that have been raised by Bawku Naba, one is the government hospital. There’s a hospital we were building in Garu, which unfortunately has been abandoned, I can assure the people of Garu that when we come, we’ll continue and finish that hospital so that they can have access to modern health facilities. there are many projects that we were working on that unfortunately have stalled.”

”I remember I cut a sod for the start of Bolga-Bawku-Pulmakom road sometime in 2015, we expected that that road would have been completed today. As of now the contractor has left the site and the road has been abandoned. I can assure my father Bawku Naba that when we come, we’ll tackle that road and finish it.”

“Prof. Mills conceptualised the idea of the Eastern Corridor project and we started it in the time of Prof. Mills. I came in and continued and did the segment between Nakpanduri and Oti Damanko. There’s another segment from Nakpanduri through to Kulungugu, that segment hasn’t been started yet, I can assure you that when we come, depending on the availability of resources, we’ll prioritise that road, we’ll complete the Eastern Corridor road so that it’ll make easier to move from here to the South.”

“I also cut sod to start the Tamne irrigation project and we didn’t complete it before we left. We finished phase one; this government continued it slowly but still, it hasn’t been done. This project will bring about 3000 hectares of land under irrigation so that our young people can do dry season gardening, they can do all-year-round gardening so that they don’t go down South to look for menial jobs.

“So, when we come, we’ll continue the Tamne project because we know it’s going to benefit four districts in this area.”

MoMo fraudsters can rob you without cash out prompt – Victim warns public

A subscriber of leading telecommunications provider MTN has raised alarming concerns about the security of its Mobile Money (MoMo) service.

In a viral video she indicated that fraudsters have recently discovered a method to withdraw funds from users’ accounts without their authorization, circumventing the usual MoMo PIN protection.

The user described a distressing incident where scammers claimed to have sent money to her sister.

When her sister attempted to check her MoMo wallet, she said, a prompt for authorization appeared.

According to her she was confused because such prompts should not occur without the user actively enabling the cashout option.

She added that the situation worsened when the scammers persistently sent additional prompts and calls, even threatening to hack her phone if the user attempted to turn off her phone.

“These MTN fraudsters are becoming a nuisance. I recently had a banter with one. He said he had sent my sister some money. Immediately my sister attempted to check her MOMO wallet but I stopped her. All of a sudden there was a pop up on her phone to authorize payment. MTN I taught one cannot get such a prompt if he or she has not allowed the cash out option. So we dismissed that prompt. As if that was not enough they kept sending prompts. Can you believe they started disturbing her phone with calls. They even threatened to hack her phone if she tries turning off the call,” she added.

Meanwhile, MTN users have called for a more robust response from MTN to address these security concerns and prevent further unauthorized transactions.

DRIP initiative was started by Mahama? Tell us JM created the world – Anyidoho to NDC

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has criticized the party’s leadership for trying to take credit for President Akufo-Addo’s recently introduced District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP).

Mr Anyidoho’s comments came after the Deputy Minority Whip and NDC MP for Banda, Ahmed Ibrahim, claimed in an Okay FM interview that the DRIP was originally initiated by former President John Mahama in 2016.

Mr Ibrahim argued that Mahama launched the project in July 2016, but its impact was limited due to the merger of the Ministry of Information with the Ministry of Communication.

“This DRIP project was something that President Mahama launched in July 2016. President Mahama’s problem was that he dissolved the Ministry of Information and combined it with the Ministry of Communication. So, there were a lot of things that he did but were not communicated.

Responding on X on August 2, 2024, Koku Anyidoho expressed his dissatisfaction with the NDC’s attempt to credit Mahama for the DRIP.

In one of his X posts, he stated, “Desperation is NOT good ooo!!! Listen to how this JM puppet attempts to steal the DRIP Initiative for his boss but ends up indicting the policy of merging the Information & Communications Ministries.

“This is a BIG indictment on JM that’s why he must have a DEBATE with DMB.”

He added, “What is happening to my NDC? This is shocking!!! They are now saying that the DRIP Initiative was started by JM. In one breath, the NPP Govt is doing nothing; in another breath, all the NPP projects are JM’s projects. Soon, they will say JM created the world. Haba!”

The DRIP initiative aims to provide metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies (MMDAs) with the necessary resources and equipment to rehabilitate and maintain roads in their jurisdictions.

My biggest regret is failing to restore NDC to power – Ofosu Ampofo

Former Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has expressed that one of his biggest regrets is not securing a return to government for the NDC during his time as chairman.

In an interview on Starr Chat with Bola Ray, Dr. Ampofo noted that the election results might have been different had there not been issues like police brutality, killings, and a compromised electoral environment in certain constituencies.

He believes that without these challenges, the NDC could have won a parliamentary majority, which would have significantly shifted the election outcome in their favor.

“I am saying that in the absence of police brutalities and the killing of people, and ensuring that the environment for free, fair, and transparent elections did not happen in those constituencies, we would have won the parliamentary majority. And that would have turned the scale in our favor.

“The results that were achieved, both at the presidential and parliamentary levels. You know, in the history of this country, it’s the first time that a party within four years has been able to improve their total vote by over two million. Yes, under my leadership. We were able to improve our vote from 4.2 to about 6.3 million in four years,” he remarked.

Dr. Ampofo also expressed uncertainty about the final election results of 2020.

He highlighted that under his leadership, the NDC achieved a historic increase in total votes, rising from 4.2 million to about 6.3 million in just four years.

He emphasized that if the NDC had not meticulously compiled their own results, they would have lost several constituencies they eventually won.

Dr. Ampofo cited issues with result tabulation and dissatisfaction with the Electoral Commission’s final results as reasons for seeking legal redress in court.

“There was a lot of back-and-forth, with changes being made multiple times, and all we wanted was for the woman to finally stand trial, to come and explain the reasons to the Supreme Court,” the former National Chairman of the NDC stated.

The former Director of the Ghana School of Law, Kwaku Ansah-Asare, has expressed optimism that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), might not exhibit the same level of dishonesty as President Akufo-Addo.

In an interview with Bobie Ansah on Accra 100.5FM on July 31, 2024, Ansah-Asare claimed that President Akufo-Addo is at the pinnacle of corruption, with former President John Dramani Mahama in second place.

Ansah-Asare suggested that Dr. Bawumia would likely lead differently from President Akufo-Addo and avoid the corruption scandals that have plagued the current administration.

“I believe Dr. Bawumia may not be as corrupt as Nana Addo. When it comes to the corruption ladder, Nana Addo may top, with former President John Dramani Mahama placing second,” the veteran lawyer said.

He further noted that Dr. Bawumia has not been implicated in any wrongdoing by current officials.

He continued, “We know the people who have arrogated the position of Prime Minister onto themselves in the country. Dr. Bawumia can do things differently if elected, for Ghanaians to see that he truly is the economic whiz kid he has been portrayed as over the years.”

He emphasized that, despite being an NPP member, he is not running for president himself but believes Dr. Bawumia will provide a different leadership approach compared to former President Mahama.

Owusu believes that even without the document, the current events unfolding would still have taken place.

He expressed his views during an appearance on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM, stating that alongside the Bible, which he considers a record of true events, the ‘Agyapadie’ document is the next significant text with real-world implications.

“President Akufo-Addo has told us that the book exists, and so the document is no longer a fake document. He knows the book exists. Apart from the Bible with unfolding true events, the next book that is closer to the Bible is the ‘Agyapadie’ document. This is not a political party document. This is a document executed by some members of the Akyem clan. Even if this book had not existed, I know this was how the clan would be planning about the country.”

He cited a section of the document that allegedly details a conspiracy against Francisca Oteng due to her support for Alan Kyerematen and highlighted that the document also portrays President Akufo-Addo’s animosity towards Kyerematen and his allies.

Hold on to your position until all concerns are addressed – GTEC tells UCC VC

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong to continue serving as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast until the Commission completes its investigation into the circumstances of his termination.

The Commission stated it has not received any official communication from the UCC Council opposing a further two-year term for Professor Boampong.

On August 1, the governing council of the University of Cape Coast terminated Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong’s appointment, which began in June 2020 and ended on July 31, 2024.

Despite an alleged extension of his term by two years, a notice signed by the university’s governing council chairman, Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, declared this extension invalid.

In a statement dated Friday, August 2, GTEC said, “In the meantime, given the University had previously communicated the appointment of Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong as Vice Chancellor for a further term of two (2) years to the Commission (GTEC), and there being no communication to the contrary from the Council of the University, Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong is to remain at the post as Vice-Chancellor until the Commission has examined the issues arising and communicated its position.”

GTEC also directed the university management to provide all relevant documents pertaining to the renewal and alleged termination of the Vice-Chancellor’s appointment.

“Given the Commission’s mandate to ensure that the management of the University is not interrupted, you are hereby directed to furnish the Commission with all documents concerning the renewal and purported termination of the Vice Chancellor’s appointment as all correspondences, court processes and communique on the matter to the Commission by Friday, 9th August 2024.”

Komenda Sugar Factory lease will generate over $1m a year for Ghana – KT Hammond

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Kobina Tahiru Hammond, has clarified payment concerns regarding the lease of the Komenda Sugar Factory to West Africa Agro Limited, an Indian-based firm.

Hammond explained that Ghana will not pay the company; instead, the country will receive an annual rent payment of over one million dollars.

His comments come in response to Yusif Sulemana, the Ranking Member on the Trade and Industry Committee, who had raised concerns that Parliament was not informed of the decision and claimed that the company would be paid $50,000 monthly for management services.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Hammond refuted these claims, stating that the company will pay Ghana a yearly rent, currently set at over one million dollars.

He further elaborated that this payment would be made annually for the duration of the lease, with an option for the company to extend the lease if they choose to do so.

“So at the commencement of the agreement to let them lease it, they would be paying us a yearly rent. The company will be paying us, I’ve said that it is over a million dollars. I’ve agreed on a figure which is, for now, a little more than one million dollars a year.”

“They will pay us for the year that they’ll be leasing it. At the end of it, if they are still interested, they could extend the period that they leased and keep on paying us the year’s rent until they give it back to us.”

President Akufo-Addo appointed COP Yohuno to the role on July 17, 2024.

On August 1, 2024, Mr Mantey filed a writ in the High Court, seeking a court order to prevent COP Yohuno from assuming or acting in the position of Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations.

The plaintiff is also requesting that the court prevent the Attorney General and the Police Council from taking any steps related to the appointment of COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Emmanuel Felix Mantey is praying for an “Order of judicial review for the following reliefs: a. An order of prohibition restraining COP Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno from acting or purporting to act in the role of Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations.

“An order of prohibition restraining the Respondents from carrying out any actions in furtherance of the appointment of COP Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno as ‘Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Operations.”

Parliament is not privy to govt’s decision to lease Komenda Sugar Factory – MP

The Ranking Member on the Trade and Industry Committee and MP for Bole Bamboi, Yusif Sulemana, has expressed significant concerns regarding the government’s possible plan to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to the Indian company, West Africa Agro Limited, for a duration of 15 to 20 years.

The factory is currently undergoing a test run in preparation for full production. During a recent visit, Trade and Industry Minister Kobina Tahiru Hammond announced that the government intends to lease the facility to West Africa Agro Limited, with an option for renewal, as part of an effort to revive its operations and meet domestic demand.

The Komenda Sugar Development Company Limited, founded in 1964, has faced numerous challenges, including interruptions in production.

Despite investments from the Indian Export-Import Bank and previous funding from the NDC government, the factory has not yet met its operational goals.

In an interview with Citi FM, Mr Sulemana criticized the lack of disclosure to Parliament regarding this decision and called for Trade Minister K.T. Hammond to be summoned to address the issue.

With Parliament currently in recess, Mr Sulemana plans to release a statement questioning the Trade Minister’s plans for the factory.

He underscored that the factory’s goals remain unfulfilled under the current administration and stressed the need for Parliament to be informed about any decisions affecting its future.

  • Komenda residents threaten gov’t with demo over 20-year lease of Sugar Factory

Komenda residents threaten gov’t with demo over 20-year lease of Sugar Factory

Residents of Komenda in the Central Region have expressed their intention to stage a protest against the government’s plan to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to a private company.

The government proposes to lease the Komenda Sugar Development Company Limited to West Africa Agro Limited, an Indian-based firm, for a renewable term of 15 to 20 years.

According to Trade and Industry Minister K.T. Hammond, this move is intended to revive the factory’s operations to meet domestic sugar demand.

However, local residents are strongly opposing this plan.

Samuel Awudzirato, Convenor for Concerned Residents of Komenda, has called on the government to reverse its decision, insisting that the factory should remain fully government-owned.

He is concerned about the negative effects the lease could have on local farmers and the community.

“But I can give you a hint, there will be a demonstration very soon. That I can assure you. We demand that the government doesn’t lease the factory to any entity. The factory is 100% owned by the government. We don’t want the factory to be leased to any company.

“We want the factory to be reverted to the production of sugar, through sugar cane, and not just importing the raw sugar from India and refining it to white sugar.

“That process only takes about 20% of the whole production, which means that we have taken out over 10,000 farmers from the whole value chain, which is going to cause serious problems. And so, we demand that they don’t give it to any entity and revert to the old system of crushing sugar cane to produce sugar,” he said.

Mr Awudzirato emphasized the potential issues with the lease, noting that it could result in a shift from processing locally grown sugar cane to importing raw sugar from India for refinement.

He argued that this would marginalize over 10,000 local farmers who depend on the factory.

Additionally, the minority party in Parliament plans to summon Minister K.T. Hammond to discuss the issue further.

The Komenda Sugar Factory, established in 1964, ceased operations for many years.

In 2016, the previous NDC government secured a $35 million loan from the Indian Export-Import Bank and an additional $24 million investment to rehabilitate the factory.

It is currently in the test run phase before full production begins, with the government’s proposed lease arrangement in the pipeline.

Preventing reclassification of Achimota Forest is our top priority – Minority

The MP for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has vowed that the Minority caucus will take all necessary measures to prevent the reclassification of the Achimota Forest.

As the Ranking Member of the Lands Committee, Mr Suhuyini expressed concerns that any development in the forest could jeopardize the country, particularly residents of Accra.

In a recent interview on the Citi Breakfast Show with Caleb Kudah, he criticized the government’s decision, questioning how the reclassification would benefit Ghanaians.

Mr Suhuyini noted that the NPP government has invested over GH¢400 million in afforestation initiatives, excluding the annual Green Ghana Day, making the move to reclassify the Achimota Forest for commercial and residential use perplexing.

He highlighted the inconsistency of spending GH¢421 million on forest conservation while simultaneously declassifying an area that has been preserved for decades.

The MP emphasized that the forest’s preservation is crucial for maintaining air quality in Accra, which is becoming increasingly polluted.

Mr Suhuyini announced plans for his committee to visit the forest to verify whether parts are being allocated to the Owoo family, stressing the importance of protecting the Achimota Forest from further damage.

“The government has spent some GH¢421 million on national afforestation programmes and that is aside from the Green Ghana Day and all of these are aimed at improving our forest cover, yet we have this same government declassifying the Achimota Forest

“Turning 361 acres of land into the concrete jungle and yet we can not point to any forest the government has created since spending all the GH¢421 million on afforestation programmes and this forest that has been created way before we were born and we are fixated at destroying it.”

Mr Suhuyini added that “everything that we can do to save the forest, we must do and my committee’s intention was to visit the forest on Thursday to ascertain for ourselves whether they were indeed demarcating portions to the Owoo family because we cannot allow ourselves to be poisoned because the Achimota Forest saves and filters our air due to how choked Accra has become.”

Ghana’s voter register doesn’t serve its purpose – Dr Omane Boamah

The Director of IT and Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has demanded a thorough audit of Ghana’s voter register, labeling it as “sick and unfit for purpose.”

In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, on Friday, Dr. Boamah pointed out major flaws uncovered during the NDC’s new “voter profiling” exercise.

“Since we started, within a few hours, out of about 38,000 plus people profiled at the polling station level, there were about 4,000 deaths,” he revealed.

This initiative was designed to evaluate the current state of the voter register.

Dr. Boamah highlighted that these results suggest the Electoral Commission (EC) is unable to independently identify deceased individuals on the register.

He criticized the current practice of simply exhibiting the register, calling it inadequate to address the problem.

“It is people who will give EC the information backed with evidence,” he said.

He urged for a detailed audit to correct these discrepancies, asserting that “a proper audit shouldn’t take more than two weeks.

“You don’t need more than two weeks to audit the register, so if they want, they can use the exhibition as an excuse and technical audit at the same time.”

Isaac Adongo will be out of Bolga Central by October – NPP PC

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Bolgatanga Central, Atiah Figo Awonekai, has predicted that the current MP, Isaac Adongo, may abandon the constituency due to anticipated defeat.

“Mr. Adongo is now running helter-skelter because of the pressure I am applying. By October or November, Isaac Adongo will flee Bolgatanga Central. I promise the NPP that this time, the Bolga seat will fall to the NPP,” Mr. Atiah declared.

Atiah Figo Awonekai attributed this potential retreat to the growing pressure he is exerting on Adongo, who currently serves as the ranking member of the Finance Committee in Parliament.

Atiah expressed his optimism about winning, citing his active engagement with local stakeholders compared to Adongo’s apparent complacency, as Adongo remains in Accra.

“While I was on the ground, engaging with the people and addressing their concerns, Mr. Adongo was comfortably relaxing in Accra, assuming his victory was assured,” Mr. Atiah stated while highlighting projects including the construction of the 30-kilometre Bolga-Sherigu-Naaga road, the Soe-Zaare road, the Zumbrungu-Zorkor road, and the establishment of a Bolgatanga Mechanical Enclave as being engineered by him.

“I assured the constituency executives that Mr. Adongo would soon feel the pressure and return to the constituency. True to my words, he is now constantly shuttling between Accra and Bolgatanga. He gets severe anxiety at the mention of my name,” he said.

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD) has officially ended the one-month fishing ban, reopening the sea to artisanal fishers.

The closure was implemented to address the depletion of fish stocks and support their recovery. The symbolic reopening took place at the Akplabanya Beach Site in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region, where artisanal and inshore fleets were welcomed back.

At the event on Thursday, August 1, Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson announced the resumption of fishing activities and urged all involved to focus on conserving Ghana’s marine resources.

“The closed fishing season is a strategy adopted by the ministry and the fisheries commission to aid in the recovery of over-exploited fisheries resources, rebuild depleted fish species, and reduce fishing pressure on these resources,” she said.

“I urge the people of Upper Manya in the Ada West to move forward with a renewed dedication to conserving our precious marine resources. May this season bring abundant catches and prosperity to the fisheries and aquaculture sector,” she added.

Be careful! I see NPP taking over 19 seats from you – Prophet Kusi Boateng to NDC

Prophet Victor Kusi Boateng of Power Chapel Worldwide has unveiled a prophecy regarding the 2024 elections, forecasting a sequence of events from December 7 to December 9.

In a sermon to his congregation on Sunday, July 28, 2024, Prophet Kusi Boateng predicted that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, alongside Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, his vice-presidential pick, will secure victory in the election.

He stated that the vote counting and announcement will stretch into December 9, following the December 7 voting day.

“And the result is obvious. Things are difficult, I know that there are two people coming but the Lord has told me that by the 9th of December, His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia shall be crowned the president of Ghana,” he said.

The prophet also warned of heightened tensions and potential protests following the election results.

He described how initial protests will involve about 1,000 people on the first day, with a significant drop in participation on the second day, leading to a return to calm.

“The result will come on the 9th. Some people will try to cause mayhem so that people shall die and interestingly, they will call people on the street and on the first day only 1000 people will show up, no one will show up on the second day and there shall be peace.”

    Potential Shifts in Parliamentary Seats

Prophet Kusi Boateng forecasted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) might lose up to 24 parliamentary seats, while the NPP could also face losses if they are not careful. He cautioned that while the NPP might gain up to 24 seats from the NDC, they must remain vigilant.

    Advice to the Youth

The prophet advised Ghanaian youth against emigration despite current economic difficulties, expressing confidence in the country’s imminent progress. He reassured them of a forthcoming period of unprecedented development in the next seven years.

“The people that they say are my party members, NPP people, if they don’t take care, they will lose almost 7 to 10 seats but then if NDC also doesn’t take care, NPP will take over between 19 to 24 seats from them. The election is on the 7th, and on the 8th the result will not come, everybody shall be jittery.

“…in the next 7 years, this nation is going to experience an acceleration of advancement that it has never experienced in the past 50 and 60 years. Young men and women, don’t run away from this country. God is going to visit us one more time,” he stated.

W/R: 50-year-old man takes his life at ObengKrom

In ObengKrom, Suaman Dadieso District, Western North Region, a man reportedly took his own life by shooting himself.

The local Assemblyman, Hon. Sampson Bediako, confirmed the incident on Nyankonton Mu Nsem during a broadcast on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM.

The deceased, Moses Frafra, had lived in the area for two decades.

According to Bediako, Moses had recently returned from Côte d’Ivoire and had been suffering from a hernia. The community had stepped in to assist him in returning to his hometown due to his lack of nearby relatives.

Initially reluctant to share details about his family, Moses eventually agreed to return to Bolgatanga, with a planned stop at a relative’s place in Techiman.

Despite plans to leave on Monday, a gunshot was heard on Tuesday afternoon.

Upon investigation, Moses was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A passerby alerted the authorities, who then transported the body to the Enchi Government Hospital mortuary.

Bediako expressed disbelief over the suicide, attributing it to possible frustration.

“We mobilized to send him back home, and he agreed to go on Monday. However, on Tuesday, we heard a gunshot in the afternoon, and when we moved to the scene, we saw Moses in a pool of blood. He had shot himself in the head and was lying in a pool of blood. A passerby saw him and raised an alert.

“The police were notified, and the body was recovered and transported to the Enchi Government Hospital mortuary. I believe he committed suicide out of frustration, as I cannot fathom why he would do so.”

He also noted that Moses’ lack of a phone complicated efforts to contact his family.

She pointed out the urgent need for economic recovery, given the decline experienced under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by Nana Akufo-Addo.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang outlined the NDC’s plan to implement a 24-hour economy policy designed to revitalize the nation.

This policy is a key part of the party’s strategy to address and correct the economic issues caused by the current administration.
