Ambulance case: Swallow your pride and don’t appeal ruling – Haruna Iddrisu tells AG

Former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu has advised Attorney General, Godfred Yeboah Dame against contesting the Court of Appeal’s recent verdict that acquitted and cleared Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

Iddrisu, MP for Tamale South, warned that pursuing an appeal could lead to further embarrassment for the Attorney General.

The Court of Appeal reversed a previous trial court’s decision requiring Dr. Forson to present his defense in the ongoing ambulance case.

While marking Dr. Forson’s legal success in Parliament, Iddrisu suggested that the Attorney General should accept the court’s ruling instead of initiating additional legal proceedings.

“I hear the Attorney General even instead of swallowing his humble pride, is saying that he wants to litigate on this matter.

“Mr Speaker, we assure him that he will be further disgraced because this matter if you want to try people try them on matters which are legally meritorious,” he stated.

Majority secretly invited Supreme Court nominees for vetting – Minority

A heated dispute erupted in Parliament during a meeting between the Minority and Majority members of the Appointments Committee over the vetting process for new Supreme Court nominees.

The controversy centers around claims by Minority Members of Parliament (from the National Democratic Congress) that Majority Leader Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin secretly scheduled a vetting session at a time not agreed upon by the Committee.

This move sparked outrage among the Minority MPs, who voiced their frustrations during a meeting on July 30, 2024.

In audio recordings obtained by GhanaWeb’s Parliamentary Correspondent, Nimatu Yakubu Atouyese, the Minority MPs expressed their displeasure with Afenyo-Markin’s actions.

Mahama Ayariga criticized the rushed approach, questioning why the vetting was being expedited despite prior discussions about taking a more measured approach.

“Leader, we were here yesterday, we had a meeting at which we discussed this matter and said we do not want to embarrass these judges. It’s a new Appointments Committee. Notice was served to the nominees to come without us having had a meeting – no meeting. Notice was served to the public to produce memos with no meeting.

“Then yesterday, we met and said what is the rush? We have a lot of time so let’s take our time and not embarrass these judges. Let’s do a decent job… only to see in a midnight WhatsApp message exchanges that we are being summoned as a committee to come and vet these people…,” he said.

“I can confirm that when I came in here this morning, only GTV was here, so we asked, what about the other parliamentary press corps. We didn’t get any proper answer so, the Minority Leader directed that let the parliamentary press corps be here, so that is the fact…

“Just to add, chairman, you have called an illegal meeting; a meeting to vet members of the apex court of our land – the Supreme Court, called at midnight, can only be an illegal meeting, or ill-motivated meeting. What will be the reason why a party in government will like to vet very respected people in this country where if all of us disagree, they are the ones who will step in for us; their vetting will be such a controversy.

“I put on the platform, ‘Don’t actually smear the Supreme Court Justices by getting them involved in this shabby arrangement because there’s no rush. In fact, there’s no vacancy at the Supreme Court which is detrimental to the delivery of justice as we speak… and then we are told that the Majority Leader came back and rubbished all that we have done including his members on the committee… so, I consider this meeting as an illegal meeting to put together members of a legal committee. How can this be? Nobody on this team is against any judge. In fact, we actually want more of them to be vetted in a decorous and respectful way. So, nobody should blame the judges, the problem being created is created by President Akufo-Addo-Dr-Bawumia-led Majority in parliament,” he also said.

Ato Forson, the Minority, also unhappy about the turn of things, put together a list of things his compatriot on the Majority side had done, calling them ‘sins.’

“I’m honestly appalled. You have broken the trust of the NDC Minority Caucus and you have committed a number of sins, and I’ll tell you the sins you have committed. Your first sin, you unilaterally wrote a letter to the nominees inviting them for vetting without the input of the Appointments Committee.

“Sin number two, you wrote to the nominees, setting Wednesday 31st without our input. Then number three, after we met as a committee, and agreed that we will do this vetting before we are recalled, so that during the recall, we will take them, you unilaterally informed them that you have not shifted the 31st you agreed to Tuesday, and going forward, you will hold it and submit the report to the House. Madam, this is not a Bana Republic. This is the Republic of Ghana. This is the Black Star of Africa; this is Kwame Nkrumah’s republic of Ghana. Please, don’t destroy our democracy.

“At the minimum, you had to give us the opportunity to study the nominees and the people of Ghana must see us that we are doing our work. We cannot joke with this democracy,” he said.

In response to the turmoil, the vetting process has been suspended indefinitely, leaving the matter unresolved and highlighting ongoing tensions within Parliament.

  • I will vote for Bawumia because my children have benefited from Free SHS – Trader

I will vote for Bawumia because my children have benefited from Free SHS – Trader

A Ghanaian trader at the Accra Central Business, Sammy has  expressed strong support for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December polls.

Speaking to GHOne TV, the trader highlighted the impact of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy on his family.

According to him, his two children have greatly benefited from the government’s free education initiative, thus influencing his decision in the upcoming elections.

“I will vote for Dr. Bawumia because all my two children have benefited from free education,” he added.

The Free SHS initiative, a cornerstone policy of the NPP, was launched by President Akufo-Addo in 2017, aiming to provide free secondary education to all Ghanaian students.

The policy has been a significant point of political contention, with various parties debating its feasibility and impact.

While many Ghanaians have benefited from the policy, challenges such as funding, infrastructure, and educational quality continue to be areas of concern.

Meanwhile, in a media engagement on July 7, 2024, Mahama refuted claims that he opposed the Free SHS program.

He asserted that as the originator of the progressive Free SHS initiative, he has always supported efforts to enhance its benefits.

“I support any bill that will improve our education to make it sustainable, to afford quality education for our children. So yes, any bill that would achieve this is something that I will support,” Mahama stated.

But president Akufo-Addo has dismissed former President John Dramani Mahama’s claim that he initiated the free Senior High School (SHS) policy, labeling it as “ridiculous.”

He highlighted previous criticisms from the NDC leadership regarding the policy’s feasibility.

Speaking at the official unveiling of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer’s running mate for the 2024 elections in Kumasi on July 9, 2024, Akufo-Addo asserted that the NDC is not a credible alternative for Ghanaians.

“Today, the free Senior High School, the same people that criticized it and said all sorts of things about it, are claiming that they implemented it. We will take it like that,” Akufo-Addo said.

“We will take it like that because as God is alive, He is not asleep.”

Akufo-Addo criticized Mahama for what he sees as a reversal on the policy.

“This leader criticized us when we said we were going to implement the Free SHS policy. Now that Ghanaians have accepted the policy, he is saying he is the one who introduced Free SHS. Have you ever heard such a thing?”

He continued, “He indeed said that we are forgetful people. Will we forget this too? Today, the leader of the NDC claims he is the one who introduced Free SHS.

“If he introduced the policy, why did he criticize us when we intended to introduce it? He said if he had 2 billion cedis, he would not invest it in free education.”

NPP will win December polls because of you – Prophet Kusi Boateng to Justin Kodua

The founder and leader of the Power Chapel Worldwide, Prophet Victor Kusi Boateng, has prophesied a victory for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections.

During a prayer session for NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, on Sunday, July 28, 2024, Prophet Kusi Boateng stated that as long as Frimpong Kodua holds his position, the NPP will not face defeat in the upcoming elections.

“Once my son is the General Secretary of the NPP, he will never lead this party into opposition. I thought and prayed about it before coming to say it here,” he said.

Prophet Kusi Boateng has consistently predicted an NPP win and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s success in the 2024 elections.

In 2023, he foretold Bawumia’s victory in the NPP’s presidential primaries and his subsequent leadership of the country.

He also predicted the number of regions and parliamentary seats the NPP would secure.

“The NPP will surely emerge victorious in the 2024 elections; Dr. Bawumia will be their flagbearer, and he will win 13 regions out of 16, whilst the NPP will secure 153 seats to lead Parliament,” Prophet Kusi Boateng stated.

“Dr. Bawumia will secure 64% of the votes in the NPP Presidential primaries by winning 13 out of the 16 regions,” he predicted.

  • Family petitions court to jail Akufo-Addo’s guard, 2 others in Borteyman land dispute case

Family petitions court to jail Akufo-Addo’s guard, 2 others in Borteyman land dispute case

The Ashale Botwe Family has filed a suit in the Accra High Court (Land Division 8), seeking to imprison Captain Edmund Kojo Koda and two others for contempt of court.

Represented by Nii Afutu Kotey Gbomase II, the family has taken action against Captain Koda, Eugene Sowah Odamtey, and Hares Muda, accusing them of undermining the administration of justice in an ongoing land dispute.

Nii Gbomase II claims that a 2000 High Court judgment favored Eugene Sowah in a land dispute, but the respondents failed to follow proper legal procedures before taking possession of the land in Borteyman, Accra.

He argued that Captain Koda, Sowah, and Muda should have obtained a signed writ of possession and an order of possession before acting.

According to Nii Gbomase II, Odamtey filed for leave to issue a writ of possession on January 17, 2024, which the court granted.

However, Gbomase filed an affidavit opposing this application on June 26, 2024, and subsequently appealed the court’s decision, filing for a stay of execution on July 12, 2024.

Despite being notified of this application, the respondents allegedly moved onto the disputed land without a court order, attempting to take possession forcibly.

Nii Gbomase II asserts that the respondents’ actions show a complete disregard for the judicial process and are in contempt of court.

“That I am advised by counsel and verily believe same to be true that the conduct of the respondents is not only wilful but it also constitutes an unlawful interference with the administration of justice and undermines the authority of the court,” the application said.

It said, “that the respondents’ wrongful conduct is tantamount to contempt of court and warrants imposition of such appropriate punitive sanction, to serve as a deterrent to others who may dare threat the same path as the respondents.”

  • Ambulance case: What then shall we say? Is God unjust? – Ato Forson says after ruling

Ambulance case: What then shall we say? Is God unjust? – Ato Forson says after ruling

The Minority Leader, Dr. Ato Forson, has expressed his gratitude to God after the Court of Appeal’s ruling, which acquitted and discharged him in the ongoing ambulance case.

The Court of Appeal’s decision on Tuesday, July 30, cleared Dr. Forson and his co-accused, Richard Jakpa, from the charges.

In a Facebook update, Dr. Forson thanked God and referenced Romans 9:14: “What, then, shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all!”

The Court of Appeal’s ruling overturned the trial court’s earlier directive for Dr. Forson to present his defense.

Previously, on June 6, the High Court in Accra had dismissed Dr. Forson’s request for a mistrial and an investigation into the Attorney General’s actions.

Dr. Forson had submitted a supplementary affidavit on June 3, seeking a mistrial and challenging the proceedings based on a leaked recording. This recording allegedly featured Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame coaching Richard Jakpa to implicate Dr. Forson.

His legal team argued that this alleged misconduct by the Attorney-General justified declaring the prosecution a mistrial.

“It has become necessary to file this affidavit in order to bring to the attention of the Court and in the interest of justice, certain pertinent, material and relevant matters that have a bearing on the fair and just determination of the current application.

“That I say that I have since filing the instant application had the opportunity of listening to a recording widely circulating in the media depicting the voices of the Attorney-General and A3 fervently discussing the evidence the Attorney-General will prefer the said A3 to adduce at the trial. At the hearing of the instant application, my counsel will seek leave of the court to have the said audio recording played in open court.”

The Minority Leader further argued that failure to order a mistrial in such circumstances, where there appears to be a blatant disregard for the rule of law and ethical standards of prosecution by none other than the Attorney-General, could severely undermine public confidence in the judicial process.

The Minority Leader subsequently filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal which has been has been upheld by the Court in a 2:1 majority decision. Businessman Richard Jakpa, the third accused has also been freed by the court.

Parliament gives green light to Ghana Shippers Authority Bill

Parliament has approved the Ghana Shippers Authority Bill 2024, granting the authority the power to regulate and standardize shipping charges, fees, and requirements imposed by service providers.

In support of the bill, the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament highlighted that local shippers are fragmented and lack bargaining power against multinational shipping service providers, leaving them vulnerable to unfair practices.

The committee noted that this situation has allowed multinational companies to dominate the ports, imposing exorbitant fees on users, which increases the cost of shipping and trade for local businesses.

The Ghana Shippers Authority Bill aims to ensure fair and transparent pricing, protecting local businesses from exploitative practices.

During the parliamentary session, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin declared, “Honourable members, the Ghana Shippers Bill 2024 duly read the third time and passed.”

  • 221 people die every year from road crashes caused by inferior car tyres

221 people die every year from road crashes caused by inferior car tyres

The Public Relations Officer of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Pearl Adusu Sateckla, has stated that 10 percent of all deaths related to road accidents are caused by substandard tyres.

Speaking to Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, she noted that many drivers lose control of their vehicles due to the poor quality of their tires and other vehicle components.

“We all have a responsibility as Ghanaians to help reduce road accidents. There are several factors leading to road accidents. But the four major ones are speeding, inattention, and the use of mobile phones while driving. Speeding is one of the major issues. Some drivers drive above the speed limits. Speeding leads to several deaths when accidents occur. Inattentiveness is also another issue. It involves several factors. They are those who use their mobile devices when driving. They WhatsApp; they chat with others while driving. Others may also be going through some challenges, including money-related problems, among others.

“The other issue is loss of control, which is usually caused by inferior tyres. Ten percent of all crashes or accident-related deaths are caused by inferior tyres. The engineering system, the electrical system, the engine, the steering, and other parts of the vehicle should always be examined to ensure that they are in good condition. Drunk driving and wrongful overtaking are also contributing factors,” she said.

According to data provided by the NSRA, the number of road fatalities over the period of five years due to various causes shows a concerning trend.

In 2019, there were 2,284 reported road deaths, which increased to 2,589 in 2020.

The year 2021 saw a significant rise to 2,924 fatalities. In 2022, the number slightly decreased to 2,179, but the following year saw a small drop to 2,089 fatalities.

The NSRA’s findings emphasize that among these fatalities, a consistent 10% are attributed to accidents caused by inferior tyres.

This statistic translates to an average of 221 deaths annually linked to the use of poor-quality tyres.

No new or renovated airport is a product of NPP’s initiatives – NDC

The Minority Chief Whip, has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Governs Agbodza, has not been responsible for initiating any new airport projects in Ghana.

In an interview with TV3 in Tamale during the NDC’s campaign launch on July 27, 2024, Agbodza made it clear that the current NPP administration cannot claim credit for any new or rehabilitated airports in the country.

He emphasized that the expansion and development of airports currently underway were started by the previous Mahama administration and completed by the NPP.

“There is no airport in Ghana that is the brainchild of the NPP. President Mahama rehabilitated Kotoka Terminal 2, and Terminal 3 was entirely new under his administration. The phases of Kumasi Airport that are now completed were also started during Mahama’s tenure and finished by the NPP.”

Agbodza explained that the vision for these airports did not originate with the NPP. For example, Tamale Airport, which features the longest runway in Ghana, was planned long before the NPP’s tenure.

He also underscored the importance of the Northern Region for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Our party has historically received tremendous support from this region. We have prioritized development efforts here whenever in power, focusing on infrastructure such as roads and airports, as well as critical interventions in water supply and agriculture. Despite attempts by our opponents to distract us, we remain steadfast in delivering our message and focusing on the needs of the people,” he said.

Lil Win is not at fault for hitting toddler with his car – Lawyer tells court

The lawyer representing Ghanaian actor Kwadwo Nkansah, (Lil Win), has maintained her client’s innocence concerning an accident that tragically resulted in the death of a three-year-old boy.

Margaret Mary Adjei Twum, the attorney, expressed optimism that Lil Win would not face prosecution as the court awaits guidance from the Attorney General’s office.

She firmly stated that Lil Win was not responsible for the incident.

Kwadwo Nkansah was apprehended on Monday, June 3, 2024, in relation to the accident involving his vehicle, which led to the child’s death.

He was granted bail amounting to 50,000 Ghana Cedis with two sureties by the Asokore Mampong district court.

In previous court sessions, the prosecution revealed that the case dossier had been forwarded to the Attorney General’s office for review. On Monday, July 29, 2024, the court reiterated that the case is still under consideration by the Attorney General.

After the latest court hearing, Margaret Mary Adjei Twum commented that the incident and its ensuing negative publicity have had a detrimental impact on the actor.

“In fact, those incidents have really affected him. The way we were praying that the movie, ‘A Country Called Ghana’, how it was supposed to go because of the accidents and the media and also the negative comments around it has somehow affected the movie itself. But what can you say? Somebody is dead. So we are not thinking in terms of comics.”

“We want to think as reasonable human beings. And then we pray that as time flies, the family of the deceased will have some sort of comfort, and closure. We are not so much conscious about the money. Now we pray that the family members will be healed and then things will be fine.”

“We will defend because we are so standing on his innocence. We still believe in his innocence until proven otherwise. We will still pursue our posture and the theory of our case will change when we have the reports from the Attorney General.”

I did not hand over Jakpa’s dismissal letter to Defence Minister – CDS

The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, has refuted claims that he provided the dismissal letter of Richard Jakpa, the third defendant in the ongoing ambulance trial, to the Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul.

General Oppong-Peprah explained that no such request for the letter had been made to him, and therefore, he could not account for how the Minister came to possess the document.

In the courtroom, Deputy Attorney-General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, during his cross-examination of Jakpa on Thursday, June 27, presented a letter allegedly detailing Jakpa’s dismissal from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) in 2007.

The letter, introduced as evidence, purportedly came from the Defence Minister’s office and cited misconduct and violations of military protocols as reasons for Jakpa’s dismissal.

Jakpa’s legal team contested the letter’s relevance and sought to exclude it from evidence.

Despite their objections, the presiding judge, Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, admitted the letter, noting that it had been acknowledged by the witness and was valid for establishing the document’s authenticity.

On Monday, during further proceedings, the Chief of Defence Staff reiterated that he had not issued the dismissal letter to the Defence Minister.

“My lady, as the Chief of Defense Staff, I have never received any request to release any document to anybody. So I can’t answer to that,” he said.

The Public Relations Officer of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Pearl Adusu Sateckla, has stated that 10 percent of all deaths related to road accidents are caused by substandard tyres.

She noted that many drivers lose control of their vehicles due to the poor quality of their tires and other vehicle components.

Madam Sateckla highlighted that the poor roadworthiness of some vehicles significantly contributes to the high accident rates.

In collaboration with Rana Motors, the NRSA urged drivers to invest in high-quality tires, as subpar ones are a leading cause of road accidents.

She also stressed the importance of road discipline, advising drivers to avoid speeding, overtaking, and other traffic violations to decrease the number of road accidents.

“We all have a responsibility as Ghanaians to help reduce road accidents. There are several factors leading to road accidents. But the four major ones are speeding, inattention, and the use of mobile phones while driving. Speeding is one of the major issues. Some drivers drive above the speed limits. Drunk driving and wrongful overtaking are also contributing factors,” she said.

Speaking to Rainbow Radio 87.5FM Pearl Adusu Sateckla, urged Ghanaians to be more proactive about road safety.

She emphasized that the severe consequences of road accidents—including loss of life, serious injuries, and long-term disabilities—highlight the critical need for everyone to engage in road safety efforts.

“Road accidents are real. They destroy lives, kill people, and could lead to serious injuries where those affected may have their legs or hands amputated. You could end up being disabled. That is why it is important that pedestrians take caution while on the road. Passengers should also hold drivers accountable and demand discipline from them while on the road. Duty-bearers should also ensure good and motorable roads. Our leaders should also fund road safety management campaigns to help educate the public,” she said.

Mahama lacks ideas, choose wisely – Oppong-Nkrumah to Ghanaians

Works and Housing Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has highlighted that the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, effectively tackles problems that John Dramani Mahama fails to address.

According to Oppong-Nkrumah, the opposition excels at criticizing ideas but lacks solutions to improve the lives of Ghanaians.

He cited Dr. Bawumia’s initiatives, such as proposing ways to reduce fuel prices and leveraging digitalization to create job opportunities for the youth.

“When the prices of fuel escalated, Dr. Bawumia suggested an idea on how to ensure that fuel is made cheaper for the people of Ghana. With the issue of unemployment, he is working to ensure that the youth take advantage of the digitalization drive to create opportunities for themselves.

Someone on the other hand said he was not a magician to create jobs and put money in the pockets of the people of Ghana. He said he won’t listen to anyone. I remember when John Jinapor organized a town hall meeting he told the people of Ghana that even if they come to power they cannot reduce the price of fuel. These people condemned free SHS when we wanted to implement it but they now say they implemented the policy,” he told Accra-based Angel FM.

According to Oppong-Nkrumah Ghanaians will have the opportunity to choose between a political party that acknowledges existing challenges and is dedicated to improving lives, and another party that has shown no regard for the people’s difficulties.

BoG made profit under Mahama but losses under Akufo-Addo – Economist

A recent analysis by economist Scott Bolshevik, has shed light on the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) financial trajectory, revealing a decline in performance under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Taking to the X platform, he shared data from 2012 to 2023 illustrating a stark contrast between former president, John Dramani Mahama’s tenure and president Akufo-Addo.

His data revealed that in 2012, BoG recorded a profit of GH₵574 million, reflecting a stable and positive financial environment.

The following year, 2013, saw an increase in profit to GH₵713 million, continuing the positive trend and suggesting effective financial management and growth.

The year 2014 maintained profitability with GH₵580 million, though slightly lower than the previous year.

This was followed by a rise in 2015, where the bank achieved a profit of GH₵616 million, indicating ongoing stability.

In 2016, the bank’s performance improved further with a profit of GH₵813 million, demonstrating robust financial health.

The positive trend, however, reversed in 2017 when the Bank of Ghana reported a profit of GH₵929 million, the highest in this period.

Despite this peak, the financial outlook began to deteriorate the following year.

In 2018, the bank experienced its first significant loss of GH₵1.8 billion, signaling the beginning of financial troubles. The situation worsened in 2019, with losses escalating to GH₵3.1 billion.

This downward spiral continued into 2020, with the losses reaching a severe GH₵6.1 billion, highlighting critical issues in the bank’s financial management.

The year 2021 saw a reduction in losses to GH₵4.6 billion, but this was still substantial, reflecting ongoing financial instability.

The situation further deteriorated in 2022, with the Bank of Ghana reporting an unprecedented loss of GH₵60.8 billion, marking the peak of its financial crisis.

In 2023, the losses slightly decreased to GH₵10.5 billion, but this reduction did little to offset the previous years’ severe financial setbacks.

Police autopsy report on Lois Abena Koranteng is false – Brother

George Agyenim Boateng, whose sister a 24-year-old KNUST graduate, Lois Abena Koranteng died mysteriously in Takoradi during a business trip, has accused the Ghana Police Service of dishonesty and inconsistency regarding the autopsy report on his sister.

Mr Boateng, through a series of Facebook posts, has raised serious concerns about the accuracy of the autopsy findings.

He claimed that while the police stated the autopsy was performed on June 8, 2024, the same day Koranteng died, his own investigation reveals it was actually conducted on June 11, 2024, four days later.

Additionally, Boateng disputes the police’s statement that there were no blood stains on his sister’s body when it was retrieved from the hotel pool.

He contends that he has evidence that challenges this claim and is calling for a reassessment of the police’s handling of the case.

    The following are the ‘lies’ listed by the deceased’s brother against the Ghana Police Service;

    1. Ghana Police Service, why did you choose to lie to Ghanaians in fact the whole world that you did the autopsy on 8th June which means the same day Lois was found dead in the pool, meanwhile it was done on 11th June 2024. Can you come out and explain to Ghanaians?

    2. Why did you also lie that there were no blood stains found on Lois when she was found dead in the pool? I have pictures to prove.
Can you come out and explain if the “reddish liquid” which was from her nose was palm oil or cloth die.

    3. Before and after your “planned” visit to the family just to cover the shame of your dilettante efforts concerning Lois mysterious death you have never called, emailed or texted the family of any assurance or briefed us about your investigation you claim you are doing.

    4. Should I tell Ghanaians that your “cyber or IT gurus policemen have failed to unlock Lois phone till date?

    5. Tell Ghanaians the relationship you have with Icon Energy .

What the police statement on Lois’ death said:

Following widespread public concern about Lois Koranteng’s death, the Ghana Police Service issued a statement on July 11 clarifying the situation.

According to the statement, an autopsy was performed on June 8 at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, with the deceased’s relatives present.

The autopsy report identified the cause of death as asphyxia, severe pulmonary edema, and drowning in a pool.

The police also noted that an investigation into the incident has been initiated.

Ghanaian MPs who have steered major demonstrations since 2020

In recent years, Ghana has seen a notable increase in political activism among its Members of Parliament (MPs), with several taking to the streets to lead public demonstrations beyond their legislative duties.

This trend illustrates a growing trend among lawmakers to engage directly with their constituents and address urgent local and national issues through public protests.

    Abla Dzifa Gomashie

The MP for Ketu South, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, spearheaded a demonstration in August 2021 to protest the closure of land borders in her constituency, which had been severely impacted by COVID-19 restrictions. Her aim was to pressure the government to reopen these borders.

    Mahama Ayariga

The MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has long been involved in organizing protests over economic and financial policies. Recently, on October 3, 2023, he led a march against the Bank of Ghana’s policies, demanding greater transparency and accountability.

The protesters, who gathered at Obra Spot in Circle, marched to the Bank of Ghana’s offices to present a petition for the removal of Governor Dr. Ernest Addison.

However, the leadership of the Minority was met by the Head of Security at the Bank, Kwesi Asare-Boateng, rather than the governor. Protesters, dressed in black and red, carried placards with messages such as “scrap E-Levy now” and “stop the loot!”

    Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, led a demonstration on June 18 against the sale of four Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.

Ablakwa, along with Organised Labour and other stakeholders, challenged the process behind Rock City’s selection for purchasing the hotels.

The hotels in question included Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Royal Beach Resort, Elmina Beach Resort, Ridge Royal Hotel, Busua Beach Resort, and Trust Lodge Hotel.

Following the protest, Rock City withdrew its bid to purchase a 60% stake in these hotels, and SSNIT announced on July 12 that the sale process had been terminated. SSNIT assured the public of its commitment to managing the Trust’s affairs prudently.

“Discontinuation of Sale of 60% stake in Hotels. The Board and Management of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) wish to inform the public that the process to divest 60% of SSNIT’s stake in the hotels has been terminated.

“We wish to assure pensioners, contributors and the public of our commitment to managing the affairs of the Trust prudently for the sustainability of the Pension Scheme,” the statement from SSNIT said.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced plans to unveil its manifesto in the Central region this August.

The manifesto will outline the party’s proposed policies for implementation if they win the December 7 elections.

At the campaign launch in Tamale, NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama committed to setting up a women’s development bank to support female entrepreneurs.

He also promised to eliminate the double-track system in senior high schools, allowing all students to attend school simultaneously.

Furthermore, Mahama pledged to eradicate the use of schools under trees, echoing initiatives started by late President Prof. Mills, and to build hostels on tertiary institutions’ lands to reduce student commuting hazards.

“We will also remove schools under trees just like Prof Mills [late president] started, and for tertiary students, a portion of school lands will be used to build hostels to prevent students from travelling to and fro with all the dangers it comes with.”

Political interference is hampering our fight against power theft – NEDCo

The sole provider of electricity across the five northern regions of Ghana, Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), has raised urgent concerns about widespread illegal power usage in the Tamale area.

Following the completion of phase five of its revenue mobilization and loss reduction campaign, which started on June 24, 2024, Northern Area Manager, Elvis Demuyakor, reported that some customers had delayed payments for over two years, resulting in over 50% revenue loss for the company.

These losses, along with other issues, threaten NEDCo’s future sustainability. While businesses generally expect profits, NEDCo’s situation in Tamale is grim, with illegal power consumption significantly impacting its operations.

Covering about 64% of Ghana’s territory, NEDCo serves the Upper East, Upper West, Savannah, Northern, North East, and Oti regions. The company faces financial difficulties due to pervasive illegal activities.

Mr Demuyakor warned that if illegal power usage continues, the company could face collapse.

He linked the low voltage issues in some areas to the financial strain caused by inadequate funds for essential service upgrades.

During the month-long revenue mobilization phase, NEDCo discovered 1,226 illegal connections, with around 236 cases now in court.

The company aims to recover approximately GHC4.2 million from those involved in power theft.

Mr Demuyakor also pointed to interference from local politicians, chiefs, and other influential figures, which complicates efforts to recover lost revenue.

He stressed that he operates under strict regulations and cannot make exceptions for customers caught stealing power.

Alongside revenue losses, NEDCo is dealing with significant meter damage caused by bypasses and fraudulent electricians who mislead customers.

NEDCo’s maintenance mechanic, Mr. K. B. Solomon, explained the meter damage issues to Channel One News.

Mr Demuyakor urged the public to adhere to legal electricity use and avoid theft to help ensure NEDCo’s continued operation and stability.

I’m dedicated to getting back funds paid to Service Auto Ghana by govt – Ablakwa

Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has committed to reclaiming all funds disbursed to Service Ghana Auto, arguing that these payments lacked Parliamentary sanction.

He has also guaranteed that no more payments will be made to the company.

In a recent social media update, he declared, “He has also vowed to ensure that no further payments are made to the organization regarding the purchasing of spare parts for the ambulances procured by the current government.”

    Read his full post below

This week, I shall be escalating parliamentary oversight efforts aimed at compelling the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government to abrogate the sleazy, unconscionable, and dubiously inflated US$34.9 million ambulance spare parts sweetheart deal.

We will do everything in our power to ensure the outstanding US$24.9 million is not paid.

We shall also initiate vigorous steps to have our US$10 million (GHS120.7 million) retrieved from the shady and discredited Service Ghana Auto Group Limited.

Remember, this alarmingly corrupt transaction was not approved by Parliament; therefore, Ken Ofori-Atta had no legal basis to grant ministerial authorization for the US$34.9 million heist, more so, to further instruct the release of US$10 million.

Meanwhile, I shall be fully cooperating with the OSP’s investigations following my complaint.

May God help us win this latest battle against ugly, destructive state capture.

    For God and Country.

  • Vice presidents must step down before running for president – Ayariga

Vice presidents must step down before running for president – Ayariga

The All People’s Congress (APC) flagbearer, Dr. Hassan Ayariga, is proposing a constitutional reform that would require anyone running for president to resign from their current role if they win their party’s nomination.

Dr. Ayariga asserts that this reform would address potential conflicts of interest, particularly preventing the misuse of state resources during presidential campaigns.

He also argued that it would help prevent any misuse of power by individuals currently serving in high positions, such as the vice presidency.

He stated, “Ghana should pass a constitutional instrument (CI) to require a sitting Vice President to step down if they are elected as a flagbearer to run for president. A new Vice President should be appointed to replace the Vice-Presidential candidate for presidential elections.”

In line with this proposal, Dr. Ayariga has urged Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to resign from his role to eliminate any conflicts of interest and fully dedicate himself to the presidential campaign.

Dr. Ayariga is also calling on President Akufo-Addo to appoint a new Vice President before the December elections, stressing the importance of maintaining accountability and transparency as the election approaches.

    Read his full statement below;

Ghana should pass a constitutional instrument (CI) to mandate that a sitting Vice President must step down if he/she is elected as Flag bearer to run for president, and a new Vice President should be appointed to replace the Vice Presidential candidate for presidential elections.

The reasons are twofold; first, the sitting Vice President will be compromising his/her position as Vice President; second, the sitting Vice President will be using government resources and state funds to run for president.

Therefore, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia should resign as Vice President of Ghana.

This will promote fairness and integrity in the electoral process.

    Thank you,

    Dr. Hassan Ayariga

Two persons arrested for robbing John Kumah’s widow denied bail

The Accra Circuit Court Two denied bail on Friday to two individuals accused of stealing cash, electronics, and other items from Reverend Lillian Kumah, widow of the late former Deputy Minister of Finance, John Kumah.

The accused, Adams Sanogo, a trader, and Kwame Dunga, who remains at large, are alleged to have conspired to steal US$50,000, GH¢50,000, an iPhone 15 Pro Max valued at GH¢15,000, and other valuables from Reverend Kumah, whose husband passed away in February.

The stolen items also include an Apple iPad valued at GH¢15,000, a Samsung Z Fold mobile phone worth GH¢12,000, a Microsoft laptop valued at GH¢7,000, a black school bag priced at GH¢400, and an Apple Watch.

Rabiu Falilu, a recent Senior High School (SHS) graduate, is also accused of receiving some of the stolen goods dishonestly.

Sanogo and Falilu, who were apprehended in the Ashanti Region and transferred to the Accra Police, have denied the charges. They were remanded into police custody last Friday to assist with the ongoing investigation and to help locate Dunga, who is still on the run.

The court, presided over by Isaac Addo, denied the bail request made by their lawyer, Benjamin Ofori. The accused are scheduled to reappear on August 7, 2024.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Raymond Ackom reported that Reverend Kumah, who lives in Achimota-Mile 7 in Accra, discovered the theft on December 29, 2023. The intruder accessed her home and stole personal belongings. Reverend Kumah provided the Police with CCTV footage of the incident.

On July 24, 2024, police arrested Falilu in Jamasi, Ashanti Region, where he was found with the stolen iPhone 15 Pro Max. Falilu led the Police to Adum PZ in Kumasi, resulting in Sanogo’s arrest. During interrogation, Sanogo admitted to selling the phone to Falilu and implicated Dunga, a mobile phone dealer at Adum PZ, as his accomplice.

Sanogo and Falilu were charged and brought before the court, while efforts continue to apprehend Dunga.

In their bail application, the defense argued that Sanogo and Falilu had stable addresses, were not flight risks, and had credible sureties.

They also claimed that Sanogo was a middleman and Falilu a mere SHS leaver who cooperated with the Police.

The prosecution opposed bail, arguing that the accused might interfere with the investigation, fail to appear in court, and had been evading arrest since 2023. The Police, who had deployed intelligence officers to the Ashanti Region, arrested them only recently.

Remain calm while govt works to revive the economy – MP to Ghanaians

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North in the Ahafo Region, Dr. Freda Prempeh, has urged Ghanaians to remain patient and hopeful as the government works to rejuvenate the economy in the face of global economic pressures.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Goaso, where she donated 10 motorbikes to aid the election campaign of Mr. Evans Opoku-Bobie, the MP for Asunafo North, Dr. Prempeh highlighted positive economic indicators.

She forecasted that the economy might show signs of improvement by November.

She acknowledged the global economic challenges but pointed out that the government has successfully continued paying public sector salaries and advancing the Free Senior High School (FSHS) initiative, reflecting its dedication to overcoming the economic difficulties.

“We do not queue to buy fuel and food items. They are always available in the market”, Dr Prempeh stated, saying “Elsewhere in the developed world, people continue struggling to buy petrol and food items.”

As the election season heats up, Dr. Prempeh urged Ghanaians to consider the potential risks of changing the government amidst the current economic conditions.

She emphasized that the economy is on a promising trajectory and called for patience with the government to achieve significant improvements and transformation in the country’s socio-economic landscape.

Dr. Prempeh expressed optimism, stating that positive changes are on the horizon and encouraged the public to stay positive and supportive of the NPP government.

“The economy is threading an excellent path of progress, and we must be patient with the government if we desire to see remarkable improvement and transformation in our socio-economic livelihoods”.

“From all indications, things would change for the better very soon. So, let’s be positive and maintain our confidence in the NPP government”, Dr Prempeh stated.

In response, Mr. Opoku-Bobie thanked Dr. Prempeh for her generous donation of motorbikes. He committed to not only retaining the Asunafo North seat but also working towards securing a victory for the NPP in the presidential elections.

EC’s failure to repair faulty IT systems is intentional – NDC

Director of IT and Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Omane Boamah, has urged the Electoral Commission to address issues with their IT systems.

He argues that the Commission’s IT infrastructure is currently its weakest point as the 2024 elections approach. Boamah warns that failing to improve the IT systems could be seen as an attempt to manipulate the election results.

In a social media post, Dr. Boamah emphasized the need for vigilance within the NDC.

He reassured supporters that despite potential IT shortcomings at the EC, Ghana’s elections are primarily manual, and the figures agreed upon at polling stations will be the ones transmitted.

    Read His Post Below

I submit to you that the IT and Statistics outfits of the Electoral Commission of Ghana remain the weakest links going into the 2024 elections.

Think about the numerous EC’s incorrect figures that the National Elections and IT Directorate of the NDC has corrected over the past few months.

Think about the inappropriate use of CorelDRAW for arithmetic.

Think about the recurring network failures that have afflicted registration exercises.

Failure for the EC to fix these avoidable problems emanating from the EC’s IT and Statistics outfits suggests it’s deliberate.

    But they’ll fail!

Our CORRECT figures will always be available to CORRECT the ERRORS of the Electoral Commission.

Folks, don’t be diverted by the ongoing IT transmission fear mongering! Because Ghana’s elections is manual.

If wrong figures are captured at the polling stations or at the collation centres, the same wrong figures will be transmitted, if not CHALLENGED.

Yours is to be vigilant at the Polling Stations and at the collation centres.

Leave the rest to us to battle it out with the EC elegantly and if need be in-elegantly!

Let me assure you: We will collate our results on time every step of the way.

And we shall relay the results to the next line in the chain within record time.

    We shall protect your votes!

Vote John Dramani Mahama for well-paying jobs through the 24-hour economy initiative 👏

Interior Minister, Prisons Director to address parliament on cantonments land issues

The Defense and Interior Committee of Parliament has called on the Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, and the Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service to appear before it today, Monday, July 29.

The inquiry focuses on issues related to the Ghana Prisons Service Barracks at Cantonments and the Prisons Service land at Roman Ridge in Accra.

This move comes in response to planned demonstrations by the Coalition of La Associations and the GaDangme Coalition Against Land Injustice.

The protests, starting on Tuesday, are aimed at addressing concerns over alleged improper land transactions by political figures in the Greater Accra Region.

The groups have expressed concerns about the Cantonments site, where a private developer is reportedly set to redevelop the property and use part of it for commercial purposes.

Peter Lanchene Toobu, Deputy Ranking Member of the Defense and Interior Committee, highlighted the importance of obtaining accurate information before the committee visits the location.

“There have been several complaints of a businessman who has taken over the government’s land and the complaints are unfriendly, and as a committee responsible for this particular sector, we find it necessary to have a fair idea of what is happening and also listen to the people.

“In fact, we invited the director general of the Ghana Prison Service to appear before the committee and give us some briefing. Probably that will help us when we move into the area, we will have some courage and we will be able to tell Ghanaians what the state of affairs are”.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced that agriculture will be his foremost priority if he wins the 2024 general elections.

During a campaign visit to Sandem-Nab, Nab Azaksuk Azantilow, Paramount Chief of the Builsa Traditional Area in the Upper East Region, Bawumia outlined his plans to partner with countries like Brazil and China, known for their advanced agricultural techniques, to boost Ghana’s farming industry.

He pledged to create District Agricultural Mechanisation Centres across key farming areas to offer affordable equipment and support to enhance production.

“Agriculture is going to be my number one priority. We will make sure that we have all the different pillars in place for farmers.

“I want to bring in the best practices from countries like Brazil and China that have higher productivity in crops such as maize and rice. We want to also learn from them to adopt some of those technologies that are giving them two or three times the yields per acre that we are doing.”

Additionally, Bawumia promised to shift from chemical fertilizers to lime for soil improvement.

“I want Ghana to move away from chemical fertilizers for our soil to lime. Lime is the way forward. We have limestone in Ghana and it is much cheaper than the fertilizer, and we want to help the farmers with this new soil fertility treatment through lime.”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has called on party members to stay alert until the Electoral Commission (EC) has counted all ballots in the 2024 general elections.

During the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, Mahama emphasized the need for supporters to be vigilant in guarding the ballot boxes on election day.

He stressed that every aspect of the election process would be scrutinized to guard against any potential bias towards the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“Everybody needs to prepare, we’re not going to sleep for 48 hours until all the ballots have been counted. None of us is going to sleep for 48 hours until all the ballots have been counted.”

“And I wish to assure all Ghanaians who intend to vote for the NDC, I can promise you that we will protect every single vote.

Fix our roads or we will boycott December polls – Old Buipe residents to govt

Residents of the Old Buipe electoral area in the Savannah Region have threatened to block local voters from participating in the upcoming December elections if the government does not address their development concerns.

They are also planning a series of protests to demand action from the authorities.

The community’s grievances stem from years of government neglect, which they say has led to severe issues including inadequate healthcare, poor road infrastructure, and unreliable network connectivity.

The Old Buipe area, including towns like Old Buipe, Lito, Gbongbonto, Winamda, Boachipe, and Braimape, is facing significant developmental challenges.

The main access road to these communities is in a terrible state, further deteriorated by recent rainfall.

The road is plagued with eroded potholes and becomes impassable with muddy waters during the rainy season. A stream that crosses this road adds to the danger, as an unfinished bridge project has left residents at risk.

Channel One TV’s visit to the Old Buipe D/A Primary School revealed that students were left unsupervised due to frequent teacher absences.

Residents explained that the poor road conditions deter teachers from staying in the area, disrupting the children’s education.

Trader Malia Zakaria expressed her frustration with the difficulty of reaching Buipe’s market due to the road’s poor condition, which sometimes causes falls from her tricycle. She also highlighted how the lack of proper roads hampers access to healthcare when children fall ill.

Resident Yahaya Muntaka pointed out network problems that make it hard for women in labor to reach healthcare services, located about nine miles away. He warned that without prompt government intervention, the community would boycott the December 7 elections.

Community representative Mahama Tanko announced a two-week deadline for the government to address their demands or face large-scale protests, including a potential election boycott.

In a response, MP John Abdulai Jinapor assured that improvements to the road are forthcoming, with contractors scheduled to begin work soon.

Akufo-Addo’s ex-gratia must be frozen to fund National Cathedral – Prof Gyampo

A political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has proposed an unconventional method for raising funds to reclaim the land used for the National Cathedral’s foundation.

During a panel discussion on TV3, Professor Gyampo argued that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should face personal losses for his involvement in the National Cathedral’s construction.

Gyampo suggested that the state should freeze President Akufo-Addo’s ex-gratia and use the funds for land reclamation.

Despite questioning the legality of his own proposal, Gyampo insisted that Akufo-Addo should be held accountable for the funds spent on the project.

He added that the President and his ministers involved in allocating state funds for the Cathedral should be sued for causing financial loss to the state.

“Somebody must be sued for the construction of the National Cathedral. Somebody must be sued for causing financial loss to the state. President Akufo-Addo must suffer some consequences, so if possible for us to freeze his gratuity to be used in paying for the covering of the Cathedral, let’s do it. If that is not enough, then we sue him and his appointees,” he said.

The National Cathedral, which President Akufo-Addo deemed a ‘priority among priorities,’ has stalled due to funding issues.

Reverend Victor Kusi Boateng, Executive Secretary of the National Cathedral’s Board of Trustees, stated that $250 million is needed to complete the project.

“If we could raise an amount of $200 million to $250 million, the National Cathedral will be completed. Let’s look at the advantages the Cathedral will bring to Ghana and its financial benefits as a nation. God has blessed us, we need to come together and thank Him.”

“Washington Museum in construction cost $600 million, but after the completion of the Cathedral, Ghana shall have a Bible museum of Africa that will in terms of space, content, and technology be higher than the American Museum that cost them $600 million.

“All costs together, our Cathedral, Biblical Museum, and Biblical Gardens is just around $300 million, and ours is bigger than the American Bible Museum that costs $600 million. If you look in-depth into the data, you realize that although $300 million is money, compared to the $600 million, we’ve done well.”

Ga South: Knife attack by landguards forces family to flee Mangoline

Residents of Mangoline, a community in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, are living in fear due to the activities of landguards who pose as Asafo groups and extort “digging fees” from residents.

Recently, an entire family, including a three-year-old child, was attacked with a knife after refusing to comply with the landguards’ demands.

The community remains on edge, uncertain when these violent landguards will strike next. Kwame Adom, a resident, told the media that the landguards’ actions are endangering the lives of the community members.

“The landguards now go to the extent of even taking tiling fees or roofing fees and this is ridiculous,” the angry resident said.

The traumatized family has since left the area, abandoning their project.

The Denkyira Police, tasked with protecting the community, are under-resourced and struggle to combat crime effectively.

“The family eventually stopped the project. As a community, we have tried several times to convince them to come back but they have lost interest since they are traumatised. This place has virtually turned into a jungle and the police must act.

“They have gone to the extent that they demand roofing fees and tiling fees which is ridiculous. One of them told me that it was no more digging fee but a development fee and I asked them what they were developing since I am the one developing my property. The police are doing their best, but the logistics to fight crime are not there.

“The logistics for the police to fight crime in this area is not there. They don’t have a running car to fight crime. Residents are sometimes forced to hire taxis to bring the police to the area to fight crime,” Kwame Adom noted.

Meanwhile, according to report two of the landguards have been arrested while the rest are on the run.

Give us adequate resettlement before impending Akosombo Dam spillage begins – Mepe residents

Residents in flood-affected areas of the Lower Volta Basin are urging the government to finalize resettlement plans before the Volta River Authority (VRA) proceeds with its scheduled controlled spillage.

After enduring months in temporary camps and deteriorating homes, these residents demand that the government honor its commitment to provide adequate resettlement housing. They feel neglected and abandoned by officials.

Desmond Selase Aggor, Channel One News’ Volta Regional Correspondent, visited the affected communities to gauge their readiness for the VRA’s planned controlled release from the Akosombo Dam.

The spillage, which started on September 15, 2023, followed rising water levels from heavy rainfall and has severely impacted numerous communities.

By early October 2023, the increased water release had exacerbated flooding, leading to widespread displacement and damage.

The floodwaters submerged entire areas, including parts of the Central and North Tongu Districts, where around 25% of Mepe was underwater.

Residents have been forced into makeshift camps, facing overcrowding, limited clean water, and poor sanitation, which heightens the risk of waterborne diseases. Despite these conditions, some are still living in these temporary shelters ten months later.

In interviews, Mepe residents expressed frustration over the lack of compensation. 66-year-old Asitorakor Akuovi, who lost her home and possessions, has yet to receive any aid.

Mankralo Togbe Korsi Nego IV of the Mepe Traditional Area criticized the government for failing to fulfill its promises and called for compensation and better communication from the VRA before the spillage.

Flooding has also damaged road infrastructure, with Mepe residents urging for urgent repairs. Doris Zowada, a 68-year-old from the island community of Awadiwoe-Kome in the Central Tongu District, described the ongoing hardships from the flood’s impact on her home and farm.

Togbe Kwabla Sakpiti V, Chief of New Bakpa, noted that while support was initially provided, it has since ceased, and government projects have stalled.

He praised corporate entities like Citi FM/Channel One TV for their continued aid and warned of further damage from the planned spillage.

As the VRA prepares for the spillage, affected communities are calling for the completion of government resettlement projects and the provision of alternative accommodations. Some Assembly members in the Central and North Tongu Districts are ready for the spillage but are concerned about the government’s failure to provide adequate housing.

The Ghana Education Service in the Volta Region reports that lessons have been learned from last year’s floods and that preparations are underway. They have urged parents to take preventive measures before the spillage.

Thomas Moore Zonyrah, District Chief Executive for Central Tongu, highlighted ongoing preparations by NADMO, VRA, and local assemblies in response to the anticipated spillage.

Parliament has approved a tax waiver of €1,517,040.00 for the installation of integrated e-learning laboratories in senior high schools across the country.

The waiver, proposed by Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Hon. Abena Osei-Asare, is in accordance with Article 174 (2) of the Constitution and Parliament’s Standing Orders.

On June 28, 2024, the Rt. Hon. Speaker sent the waiver proposal to the Finance Committee for detailed review. The Committee held discussions with key stakeholders, including Minister for Education Yaw Osei Adutwum, Hon. Abena Osei-Asare, Deputy Minister for Education Professor Kingsley Nyarko, and representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education, and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The Committee examined several documents, including the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the Public Financial Management Act, the Parliament Standing Orders, and the €11,594,000.00 Commercial Contract with Televic Group N.V. for the e-learning laboratories (TELEVIC Phase II).

    Background

The Integrated E-Learning Laboratories Project aims to enhance ICT facilities in senior high schools. Phase I successfully provided ICT labs to 240 schools and two resource centers. Phase II will extend this to 175 additional senior high schools.

To finance Phase II, the government obtained a Credit Agreement from KBC Bank NV of Belgium for €3,866,425.20, which includes a €272,425.20 Credendo ECA insurance premium. Additionally, a Commercial Contract worth €11,594,000.00 was signed with Televic Group N.V. for project implementation.

As required by Clause 14.1 of the General Conditions of the Contract Agreement, a tax exemption is essential for the project. Without this waiver, the contractor would need to be reimbursed for any taxes and duties paid.

  • BoG to keep monetary policy rate at 29%

BoG to keep monetary policy rate at 29%

For the third straight time, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has decided to keep the Monetary Policy Rate at 29 percent.

The Monetary Policy Rate is the key interest rate set by the Central Bank, determining the rate at which commercial banks borrow from it. This rate is crucial for influencing short-term interest rates and managing the money supply in the economy.

Consequently, the reference rate for commercial bank lending remains unchanged at 29 percent.

Following the 119th committee meeting on Friday, BoG Governor Dr. Ernest Addison announced the decision to maintain the rate.

He explained that while core inflation measures and expectations are trending downward, caution is warranted due to ongoing uncertainties in macroeconomic indicators.

“”GDP growth outturn for the first quarter of 2024 was stronger than expected. Economic activity remained resilient in the context of a generally tight policy stance. This is shown by the latest GDP data released by the Ghana Statistical Service and the subsequent upward revision of growth estimates. Similarly, high-frequency indicators of economic activity, which are more recent, suggest stronger growth outcomes.

“Consumer and business confidence sentiments softened, driven by the rapid exchange rate depreciation observed in May and high food prices in June 2024. As the exchange rate stabilises and macroeconomic stability takes hold, the reversal of these sentiments will further help support economic activity.”

“Even though inflation is expected to remain within the target year path, the risks are tilted slightly on the upside. This will require maintaining a strong monetary policy stance supported by strong fiscal consolidation efforts, including remaining vigilant to ensure that the end-year inflation objectives are achieved.

“Given these considerations, the Committee decided to maintain the policy rate at 29 percent,” he stated.

  • Ghana unveils its second largest rooftop Solar Project

Ghana unveils its second largest rooftop Solar Project

Ghana has launched the first phase of its 1,000 megawatt rooftop solar project, designed to supply power to companies in the free zone enclave.

When completed, this project will be the largest solar installation in Africa and the second-largest globally.

It is expected to produce 24,750 MWh of clean, reliable electricity annually, facilitating access to the European market (EU) for local businesses.

Funded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) from the IMF Group, the project covers 100,000 square meters and was developed by Ghanaian engineers and technicians.

During the commissioning ceremony, Herbert Krapa, Minister of State at the Energy Ministry, reiterated the government’s commitment to sustainable energy initiatives.

“Government acknowledges that the private sector has the power to contribute to growth and development. We plan to mainstream renewable energy as part of our energy generation mix, and this project signals the lead role of the private sector in achieving it,” he stated.

He emphasized the private sector’s role in growth and encouraged further partnerships to support a greener economy.

“Solar, over time, has helped reduce the cost in the energy mix and meet green credentials. I encourage more partnerships to sustain such initiatives,” he added.

Managing Director of LMI Holdings, Adlai Opoku-Boamah, called the project a significant step toward energy independence and environmental responsibility.

The solar rooftop project, owned by Helios Solar Company (part of LMI Holdings), will provide 16.82 megawatts of energy to Helios and its partners.

Amb. Mike Ocquaye Jnr., CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, stressed the importance of the free zones in Ghana’s economic development, noting that this project reinforces the need for a vibrant ecosystem of free zone enterprises.

“This project reaffirms the need to foster a thriving ecosystem of free zone enterprises here in Ghana,” he said.

The project is part of a broader $30 million clean power and water agreement with LMI Holdings, aimed at creating jobs and promoting sustainable industrial growth.

According to the Ghana Energy and Investment Plan, solar power could become a major component of the country’s energy mix, potentially reaching over 150 gigawatts by 2060. Achieving this goal will require substantial technical, financial, and policy support.

  • NPP, NDC are Europeans, they are not Ghanaians – Angry Tema resident

NPP, NDC are Europeans, they are not Ghanaians – Angry Tema resident

An irate Ghanaian man who resides in Tema, Accra has called on fellow citizens to end the political dominance of the two major parties in Ghana; the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming December Polls.

In a video that has since gone viral he indicated that these two parties’ actions and policies are so out of touch with the needs and realities of the Ghanaian populace, describing them as Eurpoeans.

He argued that over the years, Ghanaians have submitted to void, null and careless decisions by these political groups, yet Ghana is still at a standstill.

According to him, a dedicated, determined and a selfless leader must be voted into to power to revive the country’s economic status.

“My message is simple, forget about NPP and NDC, they are not worth it. How can someone tell you they will implement a 2 GHC phone policy. This is useless. We need a serious leader to govern Ghana. These people are not Ghanaians, NPP and NDC are Europeans. Let us put them to their places, because they do not act like Ghanaians,” he stated.

He has tasked Ghanaians to consider the other options vying for the presidential seat as there is an individual that has been ordained to change the fortunes around.

  • Construction of new head office did not contribute to our financial losses in 2023 – BoG

Construction of new head office did not contribute to our financial losses in 2023 – BoG

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has defended its choice to proceed with the construction of a new head office, despite reporting a significant loss of 10.50 billion cedis in 2023.

Last year, the Central Bank paid $82 million to contractors for the project.

The decision has drawn criticism, with MP Yusif Suleman questioning the project’s viability given the bank’s financial difficulties. Suleman raised his concerns during a Public Accounts Committee hearing on Friday.

In response, Stephen Opasa, Special Advisor to the BoG Governor, argued that halting the project was not feasible due to its advanced stage.

He stressed that the bank’s losses were attributable to various factors beyond the construction costs.

Opasa acknowledged the MP’s concerns but asserted that stopping the project halfway would have been inefficient and more costly due to ongoing contractor commitments.

“The other alternative was to stop the project. So, I see your point in management but as I explained earlier the losses we incurred in 2023 and 2022 we know how they occurred. It is not because of this project that we incurred losses.

“I hear you that maybe we could have stopped that project to reduce the losses, but contractors were still on site and all that and therefore stopping that I am not sure whether it would have been the best decision.

“But I hear you clearly. Maybe if it was your house, you could have stopped and when things got better, you continued, but contractors were on site. This is a project that was way advanced,” he stated.

The BoG’s defense comes as the bank is also pursuing a government bailout to recapitalize and support its policy objectives.

  • Even before COVID-19 Ghana was in crisis, stop the blame games – NDC to NPP

Even before COVID-19 Ghana was in crisis, stop the blame games – NDC to NPP

The Minority in Parliament has rebuked the government for blaming the Covid-19 pandemic for the nation’s current economic woes.

They contend that the government’s mishandling of the economy had already led to a fiscal crisis before the pandemic emerged.

During the 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review, the Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo, expressed the Minority’s disapproval and argued that the government should not use the pandemic as a cover for its economic missteps.

“Even before COVID-19, the government of the day had already plunged this country into serious fiscal quagmire. We were expected to record changes in our net international reserves. Mr. Speaker, we missed it in March and June and we’re looking at September 2024.

“This government had been on our case that it is because of COVID-19 that is why we’re in this situation that we find ourselves. However, the Bank of Ghana issued a statement indicating that at the time that we exited the programme in May 2019, the government of Ghana five months later was struggling with major concerns within the fiscal environment.

“Mr Speaker, it is not true that the problems are attributable to COVID-19,” the Ranking Member on the Finance Committee of Parliament said.

Deputy Finance Minister Abena Osei Asare assured that the government remains dedicated to fiscal discipline in this election year, citing a 2.9% savings achieved in the first half of 2024.

“Mr Speaker, in an election year, we have been able to spend within our limits, we budgeted a GHC1, 48 billion to be spent from January to June 2024, but we have spent GHC1,1 billion, we have made some savings below GHC2.9, below what was actually budgeted for. We’re bent on living within our means, we’re bent on making sure that we don’t go over and above what has been proposed for us.”

  • Critics of my credit scoring system proposal are clearly ignorant -Bawumia

Critics of my credit scoring system proposal are clearly ignorant -Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticized his opponents for their comments on his proposed credit score system, which he plans to implement if elected president.

During the 3i Summit in May 2024, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the necessity of a personalized credit scoring system, supported by digital identity and addresses for all citizens.

He argued that this system would reduce financial risks and borrowing costs, noting Ghana’s leadership in mobile money and financial inclusion over the past seven years as Africa rapidly embraces digital technologies.

Despite criticism from some Ghanaians and politicians, Dr. Bawumia defended his proposal in a Facebook post, expressing disappointment that his opponents criticize without understanding the context.

“With the very significant issuance of the Ghana Card, the merging of databases and the exponential growth of financial inclusion following the success of mobile money Interoperability, all is now set for the operation of a Credit Scoring system for Ghana.

“Among many benefits, the operation of a Credit Scoring system will make it easier for the ordinary Ghanaian to purchase essentials such as cars, mobile phones, obtain loans at lower interest rates.

” In most advanced nations, mobile phones can even be obtained for free from the phone companies with a two or three year contract subject to your credit score. Unfortunately my opponents always think in terms of impossibilities and criticize without knowledge.

“I shared this and many more of my vision for Ghana’s future when I interacted with the good people of the Lambussie, Nandom and Lawra constituencies yesterday as part of my constituency-focused nationwide campaign. Indeed, it is Possible!,” he wrote.

He highlighted the significant progress made in issuing the Ghana Card, merging databases, and achieving mobile money interoperability, which pave the way for a credit scoring system.

Dr. Bawumia underscored that this system would allow ordinary Ghanaians to access essential goods like cars and mobile phones, secure loans at lower interest rates, and even obtain free phones with contracts, similar to practices in advanced countries.

He urged his opponents to focus on the possibilities rather than the limitations.

  • Ghanaian man threatens to commit suicide if he doesn’t secure a job by August

Ghanaian man threatens to commit suicide if he doesn’t secure a job by August

An accountant and youth career coach, Dickson Assan, has issued a public appeal to assist a young unemployed Ghanaian accountant in finding a job.

In a LinkedIn post dated Thursday, July 25, 2024, Mr Assan revealed that a young accounting and finance professional, Michael Adotey Nyanu, had contacted him about the severe difficulties he’s facing in his job search.

Mr Nyanu has expressed that he might end his life if he doesn’t secure employment by the end of August this year.

Mr Assan highlighted Michael’s profound frustration and desperation, noting the repeated setbacks and encounters with job-seeking scammers that have added to his distress.

“When someone threatens to commit suicide, I take it very seriously. It doesn’t matter whether it’s true or not.

“The core of the message shows a frustrated man. He is trying all he could but has been unsuccessful so far. Then he encounters the usual fraudsters who like to prey on desperate job seekers.

“In all his writing, this sentence ‘I have decided to end it all by August if nothing works’ is the reason why I am writing this post.
I am trying to reach out to him and get his CV but have been unsuccessful so far,” he wrote.

He appealed to the public to unite in helping Michael secure employment, emphasizing that such support could not only save a life but also protect a family from the edge of despair.

“Remember, no matter how tough things get, hashtag#suicide is not an option. Life is precious, and with time, things can improve”, he stated.

This troubling story underscores the challenges faced by many young Ghanaians.

The 2023 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES) by the Ghana Statistical Service reveals that about 1.9 million youth aged 15 to 35 years were Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) in the third quarter of 2023.

The survey highlights that females are disproportionately affected, with 1.2 million women experiencing a NEET rate of 21.0%, compared to 15.0% for males.

The Greater Accra Region has the highest number of NEET youth, with over 565,000 individuals not engaged in education, employment, or training.

With nearly 2 million young people struggling to make ends meet, it is vital for key stakeholders—including the government, private sector, educational institutions, and community leaders—to come together to provide essential support, resources, and opportunities for their empowerment.

NPP paid Koku Anyidoho to cause confusion during Atta Mills’ commemoration – Brother

Samuel Atta Mills, brother of late former president John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills, has blamed the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for the chaos that occurred during the wreath-laying ceremony to mark 12 years Atta Mills’ passing.

The event which took place on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at Asomdwee Park was marred by an altercation between the former deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho and Ataa Mills’ family.

Speaking to Onua TV, Samuel Atta-Mills who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem constituency in the Central Region alleged that the ruling government paid former NDC Deputy General Secretary Koku Anyidoho to incite his actions during the ceremony

“Prof Atta Mills has worked with a lot of people, from his childhood till his death. Koku Anyidoho is making things difficult for our family. That guy’s attitude must be checked. What happened is that we had gone to J.A Mills Heritage for a permit to Asomdwe park for a ceremony. Apparently he had also gone for a permit. We planned on starting ours at 9 am to 11 am and his was 6-7am. As of 7am he had not set up yet refused to vacate the area for my family and I to take over. It’s the NPP that is giving him money to misbehave.

Koku Anyidoho, according to late Atta Mills’ brother, exceeded a scheduled time at the venue, delaying the second event at the same venue to mark 12 years since President Mills’ passing.

The second event, Mr Samuel Atta-Mills was by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage.

Meanwhile, the sister of late Atta Mills, has called the incident “ugly and disgusting.”

She emphasized that those present at the earlier ceremony were not their relatives.

The family has hinted at filing an injunction at the court to prevent Koku Anyidoho from using the late President’s name for his activities.

“When we came he was here with a rented family, so we just gave him a little bit of encouragement to get out of here and he ran away like the coward that he is.

“The next move is to put an injunction on him for using the name Atta Mills, he’s not Atta Mills and he will never be Atta Mills and that’s what it is,” the brother of the late President said.

Let’s support NAPO, he will deliver – Okuapemhene to Ghanaians

The Okuapemhene, Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, has urged Ghanaians to support Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) and cast their votes in favor of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming general elections.

He praised the NPP flagbearer and his running mate for seeking the guidance and blessings of traditional and religious leaders before starting their campaigns, highlighting their humility and respect for tradition.

“I know you are humble, judging from your background as a royal. All we are looking for from you is to be forthright and candid in all your dealings. If you have accepted being the running mate of Dr Bawumia, then you have to be his partner to do all the necessary work for him to succeed,” he urged.

Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III commended Dr. Prempeh’s humility and royal background and urged him to be forthright and transparent in his efforts. He emphasized the importance of Dr. Prempeh fully supporting Dr. Bawumia as his running mate to ensure their success.

“If you have been chosen as the running mate, it means all of us will rely on you and the leader. It also means that you have to be the backbone of the leader to ensure victory is achieved. I strongly believe that when the NPP wins power, you will empower traditional leaders to reposition them in the development agenda of the country,” he emphasised.

The Okuapemhene encouraged Dr. Prempeh and his team to effectively promote President Akufo-Addo’s achievements to secure a strong voter turnout for the NPP.

“It is because of your hard work for the party and country that you have been chosen to partner with Dr. Bawumia, and I strongly believe that you will deliver,” he noted.

These remarks were made during Dr. Prempeh’s courtesy visit to the Okuapemhene at his residence in Akropong on Thursday, July 25, 2024.

Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III praised the initiative to involve chieftaincy and religious leadership in national development, led by Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Prempeh.

He noted that Dr. Prempeh’s recognition of the role of traditional rulers in Ghana’s history demonstrates their commitment to empowering these institutions if given the mandate.

He congratulated Dr. Prempeh on his appointment as the NPP’s running mate, acknowledging the significant achievement and hard work behind it. He expressed confidence in Dr. Prempeh’s ability to support Dr. Bawumia and deliver victory for the party.

The Okuapemhene urged Dr. Prempeh to continue working diligently to help Dr. Bawumia win and secure the NPP’s position.

In response, Dr. Prempeh acknowledged the crucial role of traditional leaders in Ghana’s independence struggle and their ongoing prayers for peace, unity, and development.

He assured the traditional leaders that the NPP would recognize and enhance their contributions to national development if elected.

Dr. Prempeh also introduced the NPP’s parliamentary candidates for Akuapem South, Eric Apeadu Yeboah; Akuapem North, Sammi Awuku; and Okere, Daniel Nana Addo Kenneth, and requested the Okuapemhene’s support for these candidates.

  • Stalled Kejetia redevelopment construction to begin in August

Stalled Kejetia redevelopment construction to begin in August

Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Samuel Pyne, has announced that the government will soon provide funds to resume construction on phase two of the Kejetia Market Redevelopment Project.

The project has been at a standstill for over a year after the construction firm, Contracta, withdrew from the site and dismissed its workers due to delayed payments.

Pyne stated that Contracta is prepared to return to the site in August 2024 and fully resume work, following the government’s commitment to releasing funds promptly for the project’s completion.

“We had a recommencement meeting last week Thursday 18 July, 2024, in Kumasi. Since they left about 13 months ago, that’s a year and a month, there’s the need for them to re-engage workers. At the moment, they have all the materials for the shops ready. So, they are doing a re-assessment of the materials that they left on site to confirm if they are fit for purpose on the project, because the Finance Minister has given them a comfort letter, assurance letter and assurance of prompt payment,” he said.

The €248 million Kejetia Market Redevelopment Project, which began in May 2019 and was originally scheduled for completion within 48 months, has faced numerous delays.

Setbacks have included the project’s suspension after the construction firm, Contracta, left due to funding issues. The government’s domestic debt restructuring program with the International Monetary Fund has also contributed to the delays.

Currently, the site is overgrown with weeds and has become a habitat for reptiles, while the market’s legitimate occupants endure harsh conditions in inadequate temporary shelters.

Traders affected by the delays protested against the government and threatened to vote against the ruling NPP in the 2024 election. However, following a successful renegotiation with the IMF, funds have now been released to resume work on the project.

Once completed, the redevelopment will feature 6,500 leasable commercial spaces, 5,400 closed stores, 800 kiosks, 50 restaurants, and additional facilities including a fire service office, a police station, and a mini theater.

Despite the resumption of work, Samuel Pyne has indicated that the project may not be finished before the December election.

“The project should have been ready by February this year. We have wasted or delayed about 13 months and therefore, if there’s even going to be a crash of the program on site, I know it is not going to be 3-4 months’ work. The work will go beyond 5 months so I can’t give the exact time that the program will end, but to be honest with you, we can’t conclude the work on site before the election,” he observed.

  • We didn’t pay $34.9m to Ghana Auto Group Limited for Ambulance spare parts – Ministry of Health

We didn’t pay $34.9m to Ghana Auto Group Limited for Ambulance spare parts – Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health has refuted reports claiming it paid $34.9 million to Ghana Auto Group Limited for National Ambulance Service fleet procurement.

In a statement released on July 25, 2024, the Ministry clarified that the Office of the Chief of Staff had asked it to find ways to support the National Ambulance Service due to Parliament’s rejection of the Special Initiatives Development Secretariat’s 2023 budget.

The Ministry outlined that on September 10, 2020, a contract was signed between the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives and Service Auto Group Ghana Limited.

This contract covered after-sales service and maintenance for 307 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 315 CDI ambulances.

The agreement included provisions for spare parts and lubricants to ensure proper fleet maintenance.

The Ministry of Special Development Initiatives used part of its budget to support this maintenance, and after the Ministry’s dissolution, the Special Initiatives Development Secretariat continued the contract’s execution.

On March 10, 2023, due to the lack of parliamentary approval for the Secretariat’s budget, the Chief of Staff requested the Ministry of Health to assist with ambulance fleet maintenance.

The Ministry of Health then contacted the Ministry of Finance to arrange letters of credit amounting to $34,904,505.00 for spare parts for the ambulances.

“On September 10, 2020, the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives signed a contract with Service Auto Group Ghana Limited for the provision of after-sales service and maintenance for 307 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 315 CDI ambulances. The contract stipulated that the supplier shall provide the client with a projected budget for requisite spare parts and lubricants to ensure the smooth servicing and maintenance of the fleet.

“Since the inception of the contract, the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives has utilized a portion of its annual budget allocation to support the National Ambulance Service and fund the maintenance agreement. Following the dissolution of the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives, the Special Initiatives Development Secretariat took over the execution of the contract. On March 10, 2023, the Office of the Chief of Staff requested the Ministry of Health to explore ways to support the National Ambulance Service in maintaining the fleet of ambulances due to Parliament’s refusal to approve the budget estimates of the Special Initiatives Development Secretariat for the 2023 fiscal year,” it stated.

The Ministry affirmed its commitment to maintaining a sustainable maintenance program for the National Ambulance Service fleet to ensure reliable and efficient emergency medical services.

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has confirmed receipt of a petition from North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa regarding the $34.9 million spare parts deal with Service Auto Group Ghana Limited. The OSP will investigate the matter if it falls within its jurisdiction.

“We acknowledge receipt of a filed complaint as titled above. The Special Prosecutor will direct the commencement of investigations if he determines that the issue is within the mandate of the Office of the Special Prosecutor. You may be contacted should the need arise. Please accept the compliments of my highest consideration,” Kissi Agyebeng stated.

Mr Ablakwa shared this update on social media, noting that the Special Prosecutor has acknowledged his complaint and pledging to prevent any further payments.

He expressed determination to combat corruption and protect public funds.

“The Special Prosecutor has formally acknowledged my complaint on the US$34.9 million Ambulance Spare Parts Scandal. Let’s see how things go from here. We shall do everything in our power to stop the imminent payment of US$24.9 million after Ken Ofori-Atta ordered the release of US$10 million to that shady company with presidential familial ties. Nothing will stop us from salvaging the battered public purse. State Capture shall surely be defeated! For God and Country,” he noted.

Address concerns and give your assent to Anti-Witchcraft Bill – CHRAJ to Akufo-Addo

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has called on President Akufo-Addo to resolve his concerns about the Anti-Witchcraft Bill and give it his approval.

In an advisory statement issued on July 1, 2024, CHRAJ emphasized how accusations of witchcraft are damaging Ghana’s international standing.

“The culture of witchcraft accusation and its connected witch camps is a serious dent on Ghana’s image as a country. It has become an albatross around the neck of the country for decades. Its dire consequences on the rights of Ghanaian women are beyond debate.

“It also undermines national efforts towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly Goal 5 on gender equality.

“In an era of constitutional democracy hinged on the protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms, the rights of one of the most vulnerable groups in society, elderly women accused of witchcraft must therefore be of high priority to the State, and urgent steps must be taken to safeguard their human rights and dignity,” a statement from CHRAJ said.

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has urged President Akufo-Addo to address his concerns regarding the Anti-Witchcraft Bill and approve it.

“In the light of the foregoing, the Commission respectfully urges His Excellency the President of the Republic to take urgent steps including any legislative steps that will resolve any constitutional concerns raised by H.E the President in order to assent to the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill, 2023 (Anti-Witchcraft Bill) to further enhance the protection of this vulnerable group and the consolidation of Ghana’s human rights record,” the statement added.

In a statement dated July 1, 2024, CHRAJ highlighted that the existence of witch camps and related practices have tarnished Ghana’s international image and severely impacted the rights of elderly women, who are often the main victims.

CHRAJ emphasized that the bill is crucial for advancing gender equality and aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 5.

The commission stressed that, in a democratic society committed to human rights, timely action is essential.

CHRAJ called on President Akufo-Addo to resolve any constitutional issues related to the bill and sign it into law to better protect vulnerable groups and strengthen Ghana’s human rights record.

The commission’s statement read“In the light of the foregoing, the Commission respectfully urges His Excellency the President of the Republic to take urgent steps including any legislative steps that will resolve any constitutional concerns raised by H.E the President in order to assent to the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill, 2023 (Anti-Witchcraft Bill) to further enhance the protection of this vulnerable group and the consolidation of Ghana’s human rights record”.

  • You can accuse me of defamation; I’m not bothered – Sophia Akuffo to SSNIT

You can accuse me of defamation; I’m not bothered – Sophia Akuffo to SSNIT

Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, has criticized the recent botched sale of SSNIT shares in hotels as indicative of a broader problem in Ghana.

She claims that those responsible for managing state institutions often intentionally deplete and sell assets among themselves, a practice detrimental to the country’s interests.

In a TV3 interview, Madam Akuffo expressed that she was unsurprised by SSNIT’s justifications, noting that such practices have long been prevalent in the public sector.

“Of course, SSNIT will justify it because they have run down the hotels, and just like in the public sector, a lot of public properties have been run down just so that the value will be run down, and always at the end of some cycle or the other, they do sweetheart deals and do this distribution among themselves. SSNIT can say I have defamed them, but I don’t care.”

Sophia Akuffo explained why the attempt to sell SSNIT shares to Rock City Hotel, owned by Minister of Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, was fraught with conflict of interest and detrimental to the country’s interests.

“Yes, of course, because conflict of interest is conflict of interest. You can’t be the judge and the jury, you can’t be the lawyer and the judge, you can’t be the litigant, and after you have given your evidence and everything, your lawyer has done his submission, and it is time to determine the outcome, and now you are going to sit among the jury and you want to be part of that.”

“Conflict of interest is not defined by the individual. Sometimes a conflict of interest, when you are managing standards, it is part of the performance standards. When you are managing ethical standards, sometimes it is simply perception.

“Will a reasonable man in the street, if you were to tell them of this, what will they say about it? If here, you can surmise that they will say it smells, then it smells. When you are a public person, just because there is no law that says you cannot do it does not mean you should do it. Even in the Bible, it says I can do all things, but not all things are good.”

It is worth noting that on Friday, July 12, SSNIT’s board of directors announced the cancellation of its plan to sell shares in the Labadi Beach, La Palm, Ridge Royal, and Elmina Beach hotels located in the Greater Accra and Central regions.

“The Board and management of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) wish to inform the public that the process to divest 60% of SSNIT’s stake in the hotels has been terminated,” Board Chair of SSNIT Elizabeth Akua Ohene said in the statement.

National food suppliers to protest at Education Ministry over unpaid arrears

The National Food Suppliers Association has announced plans to picket the Ministry of Education over unpaid debts totaling seven months.

The association claims that the government has not settled its arrears for seven months, affecting their operations. They accuse the government of intentionally hindering the National Food Buffer Stock Company’s activities, which impacts the suppliers negatively.

In an interview with Citi News, Kwaku Amedume, spokesperson for the National Food Suppliers Association, demanded full payment of the overdue amounts or warned of their impending protest.

“They have been deducting our money left, right, centre and when you ask for an explanation they are not willing to give it to you. In my case like this they have deducted almost three thousand cedis, so imagine the others.

“Buffer Stock deducting 3% and 2% and a whole lot. By Monday we will be calling a press conference. We have written a few letters but nothing is working.

“We want the government to pay our money in full. We are planning on serious picketing because it looks like they are bent on taking our monies,” he stated.

Banka chief jailed 3 months for stealing $150k from community

The High Court in Accra has sentenced Osabarima Twiampomah III, the chief of Banka in the Asante Akyem District of the Ashanti Region, to prison for embezzling $150,000 designated for community development.

On July 23, 2024, the court, led by Justice Comfort K. Tasiame, found the chief guilty of theft.

He was sentenced to three months in prison and fined 2,000 penalty units, which amounts to GH¢24,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional five-year prison term.

The chief was charged after he allegedly misappropriated $150,000 provided by Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd for corporate social responsibility projects in the community.

    Case Background

On July 21, 2023, Osabarima Twiampomah III was charged with theft under section 124 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). He pleaded not guilty.

State Attorney Watkins Adamah presented evidence through three witnesses. After closing arguments on December 19, 2023, the chief requested a dismissal of the case, which was denied on February 20, 2024. The court found sufficient evidence for the case to proceed.

The trial ended on May 7, 2024, after the accused’s testimony and the appearance of Prof. Kwame Gyan Esq. as his witness.

    Details of the Case

According to the prosecution, Nana Yeboah, acting on behalf of the Banka community, accused Chief Osabarima Twiampomah III of theft.

In 2000, Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd received a ten-year mining lease from the Minerals Commission to operate on Banka lands. When the lease expired in 2010, the company sought renewal.

The community, led by the chief, opposed this renewal. In June 2010, the chief submitted a petition to the Minister of Lands, Forestry, and Natural Resources, citing the company’s failure to meet its social obligations over the past decade.

In response, the company offered $150,000 to the community for development in exchange for withdrawing the petition.

The chief and the community accepted the offer and withdrew their petition in January 2011.

“This said letter was also authored by the accused on behalf of the people of Banka.

“Consequently, the mining lease of the company was renewed for another ten years beginning in 2011.

“Upon renewal of their lease, the Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd also transferred their rights to another mining company, called Banka Gold Ltd,” the prosecution told the court.

The prosecution revealed that Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd transferred $150,000 to Chief Osabarima Twiampomah III as part of a promise to support the Banka community.

This payment was made with the understanding that the funds were meant for community development, not personal use.

“The Managing Director of the Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd, Mr. Ebenezer Baah Asare-Quansah, told the police that the payment of the said amount to the accused as the Chief of Banka was for the Banka community and not for the accused personally.

“The accused acknowledged receipt thereof per a receipt dated June 2011, which was personally signed by him.

“The contents of the receipt indicate that the amount was paid to the accused on behalf of the elders and people of Banka.

“The accused, however, failed to inform the people of Banka that he had received the money,” the prosecution stated.

“He also failed to release the money to the people of Banka for the intended developmental needs.

“The people of Banka, however, got wind that the money had been paid to the accused. They waited for a long time, but the accused did not tell them anything.

“Consequently, the elders of Banka approached him on several occasions, but the accused told them that the money had not been paid to him.

“Not satisfied, the elders reported the matter to the police, and the accused was arrested,” the prosecution stated.

The Managing Director of the company, Mr. Ebenezer Baah Asare-Quansah, informed the police that the payment was intended for the Banka community, not the chief personally.

In June 2011, Chief Twiampomah III received and signed a receipt acknowledging the payment. The receipt explicitly stated that the funds were given to him on behalf of the elders and people of Banka.

However, the chief did not inform the community about the receipt of the money or distribute it for the intended development. The Banka residents became aware of the payment and waited for an update from the chief, but received no communication.

The elders of Banka repeatedly approached the chief, who falsely claimed that he had not received the funds. Frustrated, they eventually reported the matter to the police, leading to the chief’s arrest.

During interrogation, the chief admitted receiving the money but claimed it was intended for his personal use rather than for the community.

He asserted that he had used the funds to cover his legal expenses related to the Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd dispute.

“But he said that the money was paid to him personally for his personal use and not for the Banka community and that he had used the money to defray his legal expenses, which he incurred while pursuing the matter with Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd.”
