Remain calm while govt works to revive the economy – MP to Ghanaians

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North in the Ahafo Region, Dr. Freda Prempeh, has urged Ghanaians to remain patient and hopeful as the government works to rejuvenate the economy in the face of global economic pressures.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Goaso, where she donated 10 motorbikes to aid the election campaign of Mr. Evans Opoku-Bobie, the MP for Asunafo North, Dr. Prempeh highlighted positive economic indicators.

She forecasted that the economy might show signs of improvement by November.

She acknowledged the global economic challenges but pointed out that the government has successfully continued paying public sector salaries and advancing the Free Senior High School (FSHS) initiative, reflecting its dedication to overcoming the economic difficulties.

“We do not queue to buy fuel and food items. They are always available in the market”, Dr Prempeh stated, saying “Elsewhere in the developed world, people continue struggling to buy petrol and food items.”

As the election season heats up, Dr. Prempeh urged Ghanaians to consider the potential risks of changing the government amidst the current economic conditions.

She emphasized that the economy is on a promising trajectory and called for patience with the government to achieve significant improvements and transformation in the country’s socio-economic landscape.

Dr. Prempeh expressed optimism, stating that positive changes are on the horizon and encouraged the public to stay positive and supportive of the NPP government.

“The economy is threading an excellent path of progress, and we must be patient with the government if we desire to see remarkable improvement and transformation in our socio-economic livelihoods”.

“From all indications, things would change for the better very soon. So, let’s be positive and maintain our confidence in the NPP government”, Dr Prempeh stated.

In response, Mr. Opoku-Bobie thanked Dr. Prempeh for her generous donation of motorbikes. He committed to not only retaining the Asunafo North seat but also working towards securing a victory for the NPP in the presidential elections.

EC’s failure to repair faulty IT systems is intentional – NDC

Director of IT and Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Omane Boamah, has urged the Electoral Commission to address issues with their IT systems.

He argues that the Commission’s IT infrastructure is currently its weakest point as the 2024 elections approach. Boamah warns that failing to improve the IT systems could be seen as an attempt to manipulate the election results.

In a social media post, Dr. Boamah emphasized the need for vigilance within the NDC.

He reassured supporters that despite potential IT shortcomings at the EC, Ghana’s elections are primarily manual, and the figures agreed upon at polling stations will be the ones transmitted.

    Read His Post Below

I submit to you that the IT and Statistics outfits of the Electoral Commission of Ghana remain the weakest links going into the 2024 elections.

Think about the numerous EC’s incorrect figures that the National Elections and IT Directorate of the NDC has corrected over the past few months.

Think about the inappropriate use of CorelDRAW for arithmetic.

Think about the recurring network failures that have afflicted registration exercises.

Failure for the EC to fix these avoidable problems emanating from the EC’s IT and Statistics outfits suggests it’s deliberate.

    But they’ll fail!

Our CORRECT figures will always be available to CORRECT the ERRORS of the Electoral Commission.

Folks, don’t be diverted by the ongoing IT transmission fear mongering! Because Ghana’s elections is manual.

If wrong figures are captured at the polling stations or at the collation centres, the same wrong figures will be transmitted, if not CHALLENGED.

Yours is to be vigilant at the Polling Stations and at the collation centres.

Leave the rest to us to battle it out with the EC elegantly and if need be in-elegantly!

Let me assure you: We will collate our results on time every step of the way.

And we shall relay the results to the next line in the chain within record time.

    We shall protect your votes!

Vote John Dramani Mahama for well-paying jobs through the 24-hour economy initiative 👏

Interior Minister, Prisons Director to address parliament on cantonments land issues

The Defense and Interior Committee of Parliament has called on the Minister of Interior, Henry Quartey, and the Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service to appear before it today, Monday, July 29.

The inquiry focuses on issues related to the Ghana Prisons Service Barracks at Cantonments and the Prisons Service land at Roman Ridge in Accra.

This move comes in response to planned demonstrations by the Coalition of La Associations and the GaDangme Coalition Against Land Injustice.

The protests, starting on Tuesday, are aimed at addressing concerns over alleged improper land transactions by political figures in the Greater Accra Region.

The groups have expressed concerns about the Cantonments site, where a private developer is reportedly set to redevelop the property and use part of it for commercial purposes.

Peter Lanchene Toobu, Deputy Ranking Member of the Defense and Interior Committee, highlighted the importance of obtaining accurate information before the committee visits the location.

“There have been several complaints of a businessman who has taken over the government’s land and the complaints are unfriendly, and as a committee responsible for this particular sector, we find it necessary to have a fair idea of what is happening and also listen to the people.

“In fact, we invited the director general of the Ghana Prison Service to appear before the committee and give us some briefing. Probably that will help us when we move into the area, we will have some courage and we will be able to tell Ghanaians what the state of affairs are”.

I will support farmers with modern technology, affordable equipment – Bawumia

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced that agriculture will be his foremost priority if he wins the 2024 general elections.

During a campaign visit to Sandem-Nab, Nab Azaksuk Azantilow, Paramount Chief of the Builsa Traditional Area in the Upper East Region, Bawumia outlined his plans to partner with countries like Brazil and China, known for their advanced agricultural techniques, to boost Ghana’s farming industry.

He pledged to create District Agricultural Mechanisation Centres across key farming areas to offer affordable equipment and support to enhance production.

“Agriculture is going to be my number one priority. We will make sure that we have all the different pillars in place for farmers.

“I want to bring in the best practices from countries like Brazil and China that have higher productivity in crops such as maize and rice. We want to also learn from them to adopt some of those technologies that are giving them two or three times the yields per acre that we are doing.”

Additionally, Bawumia promised to shift from chemical fertilizers to lime for soil improvement.

“I want Ghana to move away from chemical fertilizers for our soil to lime. Lime is the way forward. We have limestone in Ghana and it is much cheaper than the fertilizer, and we want to help the farmers with this new soil fertility treatment through lime.”

Election 2024 – NDC will stay up for 48 hours to protect every vote – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has called on party members to stay alert until the Electoral Commission (EC) has counted all ballots in the 2024 general elections.

During the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale on Saturday, July 27, Mahama emphasized the need for supporters to be vigilant in guarding the ballot boxes on election day.

He stressed that every aspect of the election process would be scrutinized to guard against any potential bias towards the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“Everybody needs to prepare, we’re not going to sleep for 48 hours until all the ballots have been counted. None of us is going to sleep for 48 hours until all the ballots have been counted.”

“And I wish to assure all Ghanaians who intend to vote for the NDC, I can promise you that we will protect every single vote.

“We have had our issue with the Electoral Commission, but we’re prepared to give them the benefits of the doubt,” he assured.

Fix our roads or we will boycott December polls – Old Buipe residents to govt

Residents of the Old Buipe electoral area in the Savannah Region have threatened to block local voters from participating in the upcoming December elections if the government does not address their development concerns.

They are also planning a series of protests to demand action from the authorities.

The community’s grievances stem from years of government neglect, which they say has led to severe issues including inadequate healthcare, poor road infrastructure, and unreliable network connectivity.

The Old Buipe area, including towns like Old Buipe, Lito, Gbongbonto, Winamda, Boachipe, and Braimape, is facing significant developmental challenges.

The main access road to these communities is in a terrible state, further deteriorated by recent rainfall.

The road is plagued with eroded potholes and becomes impassable with muddy waters during the rainy season. A stream that crosses this road adds to the danger, as an unfinished bridge project has left residents at risk.

Channel One TV’s visit to the Old Buipe D/A Primary School revealed that students were left unsupervised due to frequent teacher absences.

Residents explained that the poor road conditions deter teachers from staying in the area, disrupting the children’s education.

Trader Malia Zakaria expressed her frustration with the difficulty of reaching Buipe’s market due to the road’s poor condition, which sometimes causes falls from her tricycle. She also highlighted how the lack of proper roads hampers access to healthcare when children fall ill.

Resident Yahaya Muntaka pointed out network problems that make it hard for women in labor to reach healthcare services, located about nine miles away. He warned that without prompt government intervention, the community would boycott the December 7 elections.

Community representative Mahama Tanko announced a two-week deadline for the government to address their demands or face large-scale protests, including a potential election boycott.

In a response, MP John Abdulai Jinapor assured that improvements to the road are forthcoming, with contractors scheduled to begin work soon.

Akufo-Addo’s ex-gratia must be frozen to fund National Cathedral – Prof Gyampo

A political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has proposed an unconventional method for raising funds to reclaim the land used for the National Cathedral’s foundation.

During a panel discussion on TV3, Professor Gyampo argued that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should face personal losses for his involvement in the National Cathedral’s construction.

Gyampo suggested that the state should freeze President Akufo-Addo’s ex-gratia and use the funds for land reclamation.

Despite questioning the legality of his own proposal, Gyampo insisted that Akufo-Addo should be held accountable for the funds spent on the project.

He added that the President and his ministers involved in allocating state funds for the Cathedral should be sued for causing financial loss to the state.

“Somebody must be sued for the construction of the National Cathedral. Somebody must be sued for causing financial loss to the state. President Akufo-Addo must suffer some consequences, so if possible for us to freeze his gratuity to be used in paying for the covering of the Cathedral, let’s do it. If that is not enough, then we sue him and his appointees,” he said.

The National Cathedral, which President Akufo-Addo deemed a ‘priority among priorities,’ has stalled due to funding issues.

Reverend Victor Kusi Boateng, Executive Secretary of the National Cathedral’s Board of Trustees, stated that $250 million is needed to complete the project.

“If we could raise an amount of $200 million to $250 million, the National Cathedral will be completed. Let’s look at the advantages the Cathedral will bring to Ghana and its financial benefits as a nation. God has blessed us, we need to come together and thank Him.”

“Washington Museum in construction cost $600 million, but after the completion of the Cathedral, Ghana shall have a Bible museum of Africa that will in terms of space, content, and technology be higher than the American Museum that cost them $600 million.

“All costs together, our Cathedral, Biblical Museum, and Biblical Gardens is just around $300 million, and ours is bigger than the American Bible Museum that costs $600 million. If you look in-depth into the data, you realize that although $300 million is money, compared to the $600 million, we’ve done well.”

Ga South: Knife attack by landguards forces family to flee Mangoline

Residents of Mangoline, a community in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region, are living in fear due to the activities of landguards who pose as Asafo groups and extort “digging fees” from residents.

Recently, an entire family, including a three-year-old child, was attacked with a knife after refusing to comply with the landguards’ demands.

The community remains on edge, uncertain when these violent landguards will strike next. Kwame Adom, a resident, told the media that the landguards’ actions are endangering the lives of the community members.

“The landguards now go to the extent of even taking tiling fees or roofing fees and this is ridiculous,” the angry resident said.

The traumatized family has since left the area, abandoning their project.

The Denkyira Police, tasked with protecting the community, are under-resourced and struggle to combat crime effectively.

“The family eventually stopped the project. As a community, we have tried several times to convince them to come back but they have lost interest since they are traumatised. This place has virtually turned into a jungle and the police must act.

“They have gone to the extent that they demand roofing fees and tiling fees which is ridiculous. One of them told me that it was no more digging fee but a development fee and I asked them what they were developing since I am the one developing my property. The police are doing their best, but the logistics to fight crime are not there.

“The logistics for the police to fight crime in this area is not there. They don’t have a running car to fight crime. Residents are sometimes forced to hire taxis to bring the police to the area to fight crime,” Kwame Adom noted.

Meanwhile, according to report two of the landguards have been arrested while the rest are on the run.

  • Give us adequate resettlement before impending Akosombo Dam spillage begins – Mepe residents

Give us adequate resettlement before impending Akosombo Dam spillage begins – Mepe residents

Residents in flood-affected areas of the Lower Volta Basin are urging the government to finalize resettlement plans before the Volta River Authority (VRA) proceeds with its scheduled controlled spillage.

After enduring months in temporary camps and deteriorating homes, these residents demand that the government honor its commitment to provide adequate resettlement housing. They feel neglected and abandoned by officials.

Desmond Selase Aggor, Channel One News’ Volta Regional Correspondent, visited the affected communities to gauge their readiness for the VRA’s planned controlled release from the Akosombo Dam.

The spillage, which started on September 15, 2023, followed rising water levels from heavy rainfall and has severely impacted numerous communities.

By early October 2023, the increased water release had exacerbated flooding, leading to widespread displacement and damage.

The floodwaters submerged entire areas, including parts of the Central and North Tongu Districts, where around 25% of Mepe was underwater.

Residents have been forced into makeshift camps, facing overcrowding, limited clean water, and poor sanitation, which heightens the risk of waterborne diseases. Despite these conditions, some are still living in these temporary shelters ten months later.

In interviews, Mepe residents expressed frustration over the lack of compensation. 66-year-old Asitorakor Akuovi, who lost her home and possessions, has yet to receive any aid.

Mankralo Togbe Korsi Nego IV of the Mepe Traditional Area criticized the government for failing to fulfill its promises and called for compensation and better communication from the VRA before the spillage.

Flooding has also damaged road infrastructure, with Mepe residents urging for urgent repairs. Doris Zowada, a 68-year-old from the island community of Awadiwoe-Kome in the Central Tongu District, described the ongoing hardships from the flood’s impact on her home and farm.

Togbe Kwabla Sakpiti V, Chief of New Bakpa, noted that while support was initially provided, it has since ceased, and government projects have stalled.

He praised corporate entities like Citi FM/Channel One TV for their continued aid and warned of further damage from the planned spillage.

As the VRA prepares for the spillage, affected communities are calling for the completion of government resettlement projects and the provision of alternative accommodations. Some Assembly members in the Central and North Tongu Districts are ready for the spillage but are concerned about the government’s failure to provide adequate housing.

The Ghana Education Service in the Volta Region reports that lessons have been learned from last year’s floods and that preparations are underway. They have urged parents to take preventive measures before the spillage.

Thomas Moore Zonyrah, District Chief Executive for Central Tongu, highlighted ongoing preparations by NADMO, VRA, and local assemblies in response to the anticipated spillage.

  • Parliament endorses €1,594k tax waiver for E-Learning Labs in SHSs

Parliament endorses €1,594k tax waiver for E-Learning Labs in SHSs

Parliament has approved a tax waiver of €1,517,040.00 for the installation of integrated e-learning laboratories in senior high schools across the country.

The waiver, proposed by Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Hon. Abena Osei-Asare, is in accordance with Article 174 (2) of the Constitution and Parliament’s Standing Orders.

On June 28, 2024, the Rt. Hon. Speaker sent the waiver proposal to the Finance Committee for detailed review. The Committee held discussions with key stakeholders, including Minister for Education Yaw Osei Adutwum, Hon. Abena Osei-Asare, Deputy Minister for Education Professor Kingsley Nyarko, and representatives from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Education, and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The Committee examined several documents, including the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the Public Financial Management Act, the Parliament Standing Orders, and the €11,594,000.00 Commercial Contract with Televic Group N.V. for the e-learning laboratories (TELEVIC Phase II).

    Background

The Integrated E-Learning Laboratories Project aims to enhance ICT facilities in senior high schools. Phase I successfully provided ICT labs to 240 schools and two resource centers. Phase II will extend this to 175 additional senior high schools.

To finance Phase II, the government obtained a Credit Agreement from KBC Bank NV of Belgium for €3,866,425.20, which includes a €272,425.20 Credendo ECA insurance premium. Additionally, a Commercial Contract worth €11,594,000.00 was signed with Televic Group N.V. for project implementation.

As required by Clause 14.1 of the General Conditions of the Contract Agreement, a tax exemption is essential for the project. Without this waiver, the contractor would need to be reimbursed for any taxes and duties paid.

  • BoG to keep monetary policy rate at 29%

BoG to keep monetary policy rate at 29%

For the third straight time, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has decided to keep the Monetary Policy Rate at 29 percent.

The Monetary Policy Rate is the key interest rate set by the Central Bank, determining the rate at which commercial banks borrow from it. This rate is crucial for influencing short-term interest rates and managing the money supply in the economy.

Consequently, the reference rate for commercial bank lending remains unchanged at 29 percent.

Following the 119th committee meeting on Friday, BoG Governor Dr. Ernest Addison announced the decision to maintain the rate.

He explained that while core inflation measures and expectations are trending downward, caution is warranted due to ongoing uncertainties in macroeconomic indicators.

“”GDP growth outturn for the first quarter of 2024 was stronger than expected. Economic activity remained resilient in the context of a generally tight policy stance. This is shown by the latest GDP data released by the Ghana Statistical Service and the subsequent upward revision of growth estimates. Similarly, high-frequency indicators of economic activity, which are more recent, suggest stronger growth outcomes.

“Consumer and business confidence sentiments softened, driven by the rapid exchange rate depreciation observed in May and high food prices in June 2024. As the exchange rate stabilises and macroeconomic stability takes hold, the reversal of these sentiments will further help support economic activity.”

“Even though inflation is expected to remain within the target year path, the risks are tilted slightly on the upside. This will require maintaining a strong monetary policy stance supported by strong fiscal consolidation efforts, including remaining vigilant to ensure that the end-year inflation objectives are achieved.

“Given these considerations, the Committee decided to maintain the policy rate at 29 percent,” he stated.

  • Ghana unveils its second largest rooftop Solar Project

Ghana unveils its second largest rooftop Solar Project

Ghana has launched the first phase of its 1,000 megawatt rooftop solar project, designed to supply power to companies in the free zone enclave.

When completed, this project will be the largest solar installation in Africa and the second-largest globally.

It is expected to produce 24,750 MWh of clean, reliable electricity annually, facilitating access to the European market (EU) for local businesses.

Funded by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) from the IMF Group, the project covers 100,000 square meters and was developed by Ghanaian engineers and technicians.

During the commissioning ceremony, Herbert Krapa, Minister of State at the Energy Ministry, reiterated the government’s commitment to sustainable energy initiatives.

“Government acknowledges that the private sector has the power to contribute to growth and development. We plan to mainstream renewable energy as part of our energy generation mix, and this project signals the lead role of the private sector in achieving it,” he stated.

He emphasized the private sector’s role in growth and encouraged further partnerships to support a greener economy.

“Solar, over time, has helped reduce the cost in the energy mix and meet green credentials. I encourage more partnerships to sustain such initiatives,” he added.

Managing Director of LMI Holdings, Adlai Opoku-Boamah, called the project a significant step toward energy independence and environmental responsibility.

The solar rooftop project, owned by Helios Solar Company (part of LMI Holdings), will provide 16.82 megawatts of energy to Helios and its partners.

Amb. Mike Ocquaye Jnr., CEO of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, stressed the importance of the free zones in Ghana’s economic development, noting that this project reinforces the need for a vibrant ecosystem of free zone enterprises.

“This project reaffirms the need to foster a thriving ecosystem of free zone enterprises here in Ghana,” he said.

The project is part of a broader $30 million clean power and water agreement with LMI Holdings, aimed at creating jobs and promoting sustainable industrial growth.

According to the Ghana Energy and Investment Plan, solar power could become a major component of the country’s energy mix, potentially reaching over 150 gigawatts by 2060. Achieving this goal will require substantial technical, financial, and policy support.

NPP, NDC are Europeans, they are not Ghanaians – Angry Tema resident

An irate Ghanaian man who resides in Tema, Accra has called on fellow citizens to end the political dominance of the two major parties in Ghana; the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming December Polls.

In a video that has since gone viral he indicated that these two parties’ actions and policies are so out of touch with the needs and realities of the Ghanaian populace, describing them as Eurpoeans.

He argued that over the years, Ghanaians have submitted to void, null and careless decisions by these political groups, yet Ghana is still at a standstill.

According to him, a dedicated, determined and a selfless leader must be voted into to power to revive the country’s economic status.

“My message is simple, forget about NPP and NDC, they are not worth it. How can someone tell you they will implement a 2 GHC phone policy. This is useless. We need a serious leader to govern Ghana. These people are not Ghanaians, NPP and NDC are Europeans. Let us put them to their places, because they do not act like Ghanaians,” he stated.

He has tasked Ghanaians to consider the other options vying for the presidential seat as there is an individual that has been ordained to change the fortunes around.

  • Construction of new head office did not contribute to our financial losses in 2023 – BoG

Construction of new head office did not contribute to our financial losses in 2023 – BoG

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has defended its choice to proceed with the construction of a new head office, despite reporting a significant loss of 10.50 billion cedis in 2023.

Last year, the Central Bank paid $82 million to contractors for the project.

The decision has drawn criticism, with MP Yusif Suleman questioning the project’s viability given the bank’s financial difficulties. Suleman raised his concerns during a Public Accounts Committee hearing on Friday.

In response, Stephen Opasa, Special Advisor to the BoG Governor, argued that halting the project was not feasible due to its advanced stage.

He stressed that the bank’s losses were attributable to various factors beyond the construction costs.

Opasa acknowledged the MP’s concerns but asserted that stopping the project halfway would have been inefficient and more costly due to ongoing contractor commitments.

“The other alternative was to stop the project. So, I see your point in management but as I explained earlier the losses we incurred in 2023 and 2022 we know how they occurred. It is not because of this project that we incurred losses.

“I hear you that maybe we could have stopped that project to reduce the losses, but contractors were still on site and all that and therefore stopping that I am not sure whether it would have been the best decision.

“But I hear you clearly. Maybe if it was your house, you could have stopped and when things got better, you continued, but contractors were on site. This is a project that was way advanced,” he stated.

The BoG’s defense comes as the bank is also pursuing a government bailout to recapitalize and support its policy objectives.

Even before COVID-19 Ghana was in crisis, stop the blame games – NDC to NPP

The Minority in Parliament has rebuked the government for blaming the Covid-19 pandemic for the nation’s current economic woes.

They contend that the government’s mishandling of the economy had already led to a fiscal crisis before the pandemic emerged.

During the 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review, the Ranking Member on the Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo, expressed the Minority’s disapproval and argued that the government should not use the pandemic as a cover for its economic missteps.

“Even before COVID-19, the government of the day had already plunged this country into serious fiscal quagmire. We were expected to record changes in our net international reserves. Mr. Speaker, we missed it in March and June and we’re looking at September 2024.

“This government had been on our case that it is because of COVID-19 that is why we’re in this situation that we find ourselves. However, the Bank of Ghana issued a statement indicating that at the time that we exited the programme in May 2019, the government of Ghana five months later was struggling with major concerns within the fiscal environment.

“Mr Speaker, it is not true that the problems are attributable to COVID-19,” the Ranking Member on the Finance Committee of Parliament said.

Deputy Finance Minister Abena Osei Asare assured that the government remains dedicated to fiscal discipline in this election year, citing a 2.9% savings achieved in the first half of 2024.

“Mr Speaker, in an election year, we have been able to spend within our limits, we budgeted a GHC1, 48 billion to be spent from January to June 2024, but we have spent GHC1,1 billion, we have made some savings below GHC2.9, below what was actually budgeted for. We’re bent on living within our means, we’re bent on making sure that we don’t go over and above what has been proposed for us.”

Critics of my credit scoring system proposal are clearly ignorant -Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticized his opponents for their comments on his proposed credit score system, which he plans to implement if elected president.

During the 3i Summit in May 2024, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the necessity of a personalized credit scoring system, supported by digital identity and addresses for all citizens.

He argued that this system would reduce financial risks and borrowing costs, noting Ghana’s leadership in mobile money and financial inclusion over the past seven years as Africa rapidly embraces digital technologies.

Despite criticism from some Ghanaians and politicians, Dr. Bawumia defended his proposal in a Facebook post, expressing disappointment that his opponents criticize without understanding the context.

“With the very significant issuance of the Ghana Card, the merging of databases and the exponential growth of financial inclusion following the success of mobile money Interoperability, all is now set for the operation of a Credit Scoring system for Ghana.

“Among many benefits, the operation of a Credit Scoring system will make it easier for the ordinary Ghanaian to purchase essentials such as cars, mobile phones, obtain loans at lower interest rates.

” In most advanced nations, mobile phones can even be obtained for free from the phone companies with a two or three year contract subject to your credit score. Unfortunately my opponents always think in terms of impossibilities and criticize without knowledge.

“I shared this and many more of my vision for Ghana’s future when I interacted with the good people of the Lambussie, Nandom and Lawra constituencies yesterday as part of my constituency-focused nationwide campaign. Indeed, it is Possible!,” he wrote.

He highlighted the significant progress made in issuing the Ghana Card, merging databases, and achieving mobile money interoperability, which pave the way for a credit scoring system.

Dr. Bawumia underscored that this system would allow ordinary Ghanaians to access essential goods like cars and mobile phones, secure loans at lower interest rates, and even obtain free phones with contracts, similar to practices in advanced countries.

He urged his opponents to focus on the possibilities rather than the limitations.

Ghanaian man threatens to commit suicide if he doesn’t secure a job by August

An accountant and youth career coach, Dickson Assan, has issued a public appeal to assist a young unemployed Ghanaian accountant in finding a job.

In a LinkedIn post dated Thursday, July 25, 2024, Mr Assan revealed that a young accounting and finance professional, Michael Adotey Nyanu, had contacted him about the severe difficulties he’s facing in his job search.

Mr Nyanu has expressed that he might end his life if he doesn’t secure employment by the end of August this year.

Mr Assan highlighted Michael’s profound frustration and desperation, noting the repeated setbacks and encounters with job-seeking scammers that have added to his distress.

“When someone threatens to commit suicide, I take it very seriously. It doesn’t matter whether it’s true or not.

“The core of the message shows a frustrated man. He is trying all he could but has been unsuccessful so far. Then he encounters the usual fraudsters who like to prey on desperate job seekers.

“In all his writing, this sentence ‘I have decided to end it all by August if nothing works’ is the reason why I am writing this post.
I am trying to reach out to him and get his CV but have been unsuccessful so far,” he wrote.

He appealed to the public to unite in helping Michael secure employment, emphasizing that such support could not only save a life but also protect a family from the edge of despair.

“Remember, no matter how tough things get, hashtag#suicide is not an option. Life is precious, and with time, things can improve”, he stated.

This troubling story underscores the challenges faced by many young Ghanaians.

The 2023 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES) by the Ghana Statistical Service reveals that about 1.9 million youth aged 15 to 35 years were Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) in the third quarter of 2023.

The survey highlights that females are disproportionately affected, with 1.2 million women experiencing a NEET rate of 21.0%, compared to 15.0% for males.

The Greater Accra Region has the highest number of NEET youth, with over 565,000 individuals not engaged in education, employment, or training.

With nearly 2 million young people struggling to make ends meet, it is vital for key stakeholders—including the government, private sector, educational institutions, and community leaders—to come together to provide essential support, resources, and opportunities for their empowerment.

NPP paid Koku Anyidoho to cause confusion during Atta Mills’ commemoration – Brother

Samuel Atta Mills, brother of late former president John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills, has blamed the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for the chaos that occurred during the wreath-laying ceremony to mark 12 years Atta Mills’ passing.

The event which took place on Wednesday, July 24, 2024 at Asomdwee Park was marred by an altercation between the former deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho and Ataa Mills’ family.

Speaking to Onua TV, Samuel Atta-Mills who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem constituency in the Central Region alleged that the ruling government paid former NDC Deputy General Secretary Koku Anyidoho to incite his actions during the ceremony

“Prof Atta Mills has worked with a lot of people, from his childhood till his death. Koku Anyidoho is making things difficult for our family. That guy’s attitude must be checked. What happened is that we had gone to J.A Mills Heritage for a permit to Asomdwe park for a ceremony. Apparently he had also gone for a permit. We planned on starting ours at 9 am to 11 am and his was 6-7am. As of 7am he had not set up yet refused to vacate the area for my family and I to take over. It’s the NPP that is giving him money to misbehave.

Koku Anyidoho, according to late Atta Mills’ brother, exceeded a scheduled time at the venue, delaying the second event at the same venue to mark 12 years since President Mills’ passing.

The second event, Mr Samuel Atta-Mills was by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the J.E.A. Mills Memorial Heritage.

Meanwhile, the sister of late Atta Mills, has called the incident “ugly and disgusting.”

She emphasized that those present at the earlier ceremony were not their relatives.

The family has hinted at filing an injunction at the court to prevent Koku Anyidoho from using the late President’s name for his activities.

“When we came he was here with a rented family, so we just gave him a little bit of encouragement to get out of here and he ran away like the coward that he is.

“The next move is to put an injunction on him for using the name Atta Mills, he’s not Atta Mills and he will never be Atta Mills and that’s what it is,” the brother of the late President said.

The Okuapemhene encouraged Dr. Prempeh and his team to effectively promote President Akufo-Addo’s achievements to secure a strong voter turnout for the NPP.

“It is because of your hard work for the party and country that you have been chosen to partner with Dr. Bawumia, and I strongly believe that you will deliver,” he noted.

  • Stalled Kejetia redevelopment construction to begin in August

Stalled Kejetia redevelopment construction to begin in August

Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Samuel Pyne, has announced that the government will soon provide funds to resume construction on phase two of the Kejetia Market Redevelopment Project.

The project has been at a standstill for over a year after the construction firm, Contracta, withdrew from the site and dismissed its workers due to delayed payments.

Pyne stated that Contracta is prepared to return to the site in August 2024 and fully resume work, following the government’s commitment to releasing funds promptly for the project’s completion.

“We had a recommencement meeting last week Thursday 18 July, 2024, in Kumasi. Since they left about 13 months ago, that’s a year and a month, there’s the need for them to re-engage workers. At the moment, they have all the materials for the shops ready. So, they are doing a re-assessment of the materials that they left on site to confirm if they are fit for purpose on the project, because the Finance Minister has given them a comfort letter, assurance letter and assurance of prompt payment,” he said.

The €248 million Kejetia Market Redevelopment Project, which began in May 2019 and was originally scheduled for completion within 48 months, has faced numerous delays.

Setbacks have included the project’s suspension after the construction firm, Contracta, left due to funding issues. The government’s domestic debt restructuring program with the International Monetary Fund has also contributed to the delays.

Currently, the site is overgrown with weeds and has become a habitat for reptiles, while the market’s legitimate occupants endure harsh conditions in inadequate temporary shelters.

Traders affected by the delays protested against the government and threatened to vote against the ruling NPP in the 2024 election. However, following a successful renegotiation with the IMF, funds have now been released to resume work on the project.

Once completed, the redevelopment will feature 6,500 leasable commercial spaces, 5,400 closed stores, 800 kiosks, 50 restaurants, and additional facilities including a fire service office, a police station, and a mini theater.

Despite the resumption of work, Samuel Pyne has indicated that the project may not be finished before the December election.

“The project should have been ready by February this year. We have wasted or delayed about 13 months and therefore, if there’s even going to be a crash of the program on site, I know it is not going to be 3-4 months’ work. The work will go beyond 5 months so I can’t give the exact time that the program will end, but to be honest with you, we can’t conclude the work on site before the election,” he observed.

  • We didn’t pay $34.9m to Ghana Auto Group Limited for Ambulance spare parts – Ministry of Health

We didn’t pay $34.9m to Ghana Auto Group Limited for Ambulance spare parts – Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health has refuted reports claiming it paid $34.9 million to Ghana Auto Group Limited for National Ambulance Service fleet procurement.

In a statement released on July 25, 2024, the Ministry clarified that the Office of the Chief of Staff had asked it to find ways to support the National Ambulance Service due to Parliament’s rejection of the Special Initiatives Development Secretariat’s 2023 budget.

The Ministry outlined that on September 10, 2020, a contract was signed between the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives and Service Auto Group Ghana Limited.

This contract covered after-sales service and maintenance for 307 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 315 CDI ambulances.

The agreement included provisions for spare parts and lubricants to ensure proper fleet maintenance.

The Ministry of Special Development Initiatives used part of its budget to support this maintenance, and after the Ministry’s dissolution, the Special Initiatives Development Secretariat continued the contract’s execution.

On March 10, 2023, due to the lack of parliamentary approval for the Secretariat’s budget, the Chief of Staff requested the Ministry of Health to assist with ambulance fleet maintenance.

The Ministry of Health then contacted the Ministry of Finance to arrange letters of credit amounting to $34,904,505.00 for spare parts for the ambulances.

“On September 10, 2020, the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives signed a contract with Service Auto Group Ghana Limited for the provision of after-sales service and maintenance for 307 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 315 CDI ambulances. The contract stipulated that the supplier shall provide the client with a projected budget for requisite spare parts and lubricants to ensure the smooth servicing and maintenance of the fleet.

“Since the inception of the contract, the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives has utilized a portion of its annual budget allocation to support the National Ambulance Service and fund the maintenance agreement. Following the dissolution of the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives, the Special Initiatives Development Secretariat took over the execution of the contract. On March 10, 2023, the Office of the Chief of Staff requested the Ministry of Health to explore ways to support the National Ambulance Service in maintaining the fleet of ambulances due to Parliament’s refusal to approve the budget estimates of the Special Initiatives Development Secretariat for the 2023 fiscal year,” it stated.

The Ministry affirmed its commitment to maintaining a sustainable maintenance program for the National Ambulance Service fleet to ensure reliable and efficient emergency medical services.

Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng has confirmed receipt of a petition from North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa regarding the $34.9 million spare parts deal with Service Auto Group Ghana Limited. The OSP will investigate the matter if it falls within its jurisdiction.

“We acknowledge receipt of a filed complaint as titled above. The Special Prosecutor will direct the commencement of investigations if he determines that the issue is within the mandate of the Office of the Special Prosecutor. You may be contacted should the need arise. Please accept the compliments of my highest consideration,” Kissi Agyebeng stated.

Mr Ablakwa shared this update on social media, noting that the Special Prosecutor has acknowledged his complaint and pledging to prevent any further payments.

He expressed determination to combat corruption and protect public funds.

“The Special Prosecutor has formally acknowledged my complaint on the US$34.9 million Ambulance Spare Parts Scandal. Let’s see how things go from here. We shall do everything in our power to stop the imminent payment of US$24.9 million after Ken Ofori-Atta ordered the release of US$10 million to that shady company with presidential familial ties. Nothing will stop us from salvaging the battered public purse. State Capture shall surely be defeated! For God and Country,” he noted.

Address concerns and give your assent to Anti-Witchcraft Bill – CHRAJ to Akufo-Addo

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has called on President Akufo-Addo to resolve his concerns about the Anti-Witchcraft Bill and give it his approval.

In an advisory statement issued on July 1, 2024, CHRAJ emphasized how accusations of witchcraft are damaging Ghana’s international standing.

“The culture of witchcraft accusation and its connected witch camps is a serious dent on Ghana’s image as a country. It has become an albatross around the neck of the country for decades. Its dire consequences on the rights of Ghanaian women are beyond debate.

“It also undermines national efforts towards the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) particularly Goal 5 on gender equality.

“In an era of constitutional democracy hinged on the protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms, the rights of one of the most vulnerable groups in society, elderly women accused of witchcraft must therefore be of high priority to the State, and urgent steps must be taken to safeguard their human rights and dignity,” a statement from CHRAJ said.

The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has urged President Akufo-Addo to address his concerns regarding the Anti-Witchcraft Bill and approve it.

“In the light of the foregoing, the Commission respectfully urges His Excellency the President of the Republic to take urgent steps including any legislative steps that will resolve any constitutional concerns raised by H.E the President in order to assent to the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill, 2023 (Anti-Witchcraft Bill) to further enhance the protection of this vulnerable group and the consolidation of Ghana’s human rights record,” the statement added.

In a statement dated July 1, 2024, CHRAJ highlighted that the existence of witch camps and related practices have tarnished Ghana’s international image and severely impacted the rights of elderly women, who are often the main victims.

CHRAJ emphasized that the bill is crucial for advancing gender equality and aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 5.

The commission stressed that, in a democratic society committed to human rights, timely action is essential.

CHRAJ called on President Akufo-Addo to resolve any constitutional issues related to the bill and sign it into law to better protect vulnerable groups and strengthen Ghana’s human rights record.

The commission’s statement read“In the light of the foregoing, the Commission respectfully urges His Excellency the President of the Republic to take urgent steps including any legislative steps that will resolve any constitutional concerns raised by H.E the President in order to assent to the Criminal Offences Amendment Bill, 2023 (Anti-Witchcraft Bill) to further enhance the protection of this vulnerable group and the consolidation of Ghana’s human rights record”.

  • You can accuse me of defamation; I’m not bothered – Sophia Akuffo to SSNIT

You can accuse me of defamation; I’m not bothered – Sophia Akuffo to SSNIT

Former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, has criticized the recent botched sale of SSNIT shares in hotels as indicative of a broader problem in Ghana.

She claims that those responsible for managing state institutions often intentionally deplete and sell assets among themselves, a practice detrimental to the country’s interests.

In a TV3 interview, Madam Akuffo expressed that she was unsurprised by SSNIT’s justifications, noting that such practices have long been prevalent in the public sector.

“Of course, SSNIT will justify it because they have run down the hotels, and just like in the public sector, a lot of public properties have been run down just so that the value will be run down, and always at the end of some cycle or the other, they do sweetheart deals and do this distribution among themselves. SSNIT can say I have defamed them, but I don’t care.”

Sophia Akuffo explained why the attempt to sell SSNIT shares to Rock City Hotel, owned by Minister of Food and Agriculture Bryan Acheampong, was fraught with conflict of interest and detrimental to the country’s interests.

“Yes, of course, because conflict of interest is conflict of interest. You can’t be the judge and the jury, you can’t be the lawyer and the judge, you can’t be the litigant, and after you have given your evidence and everything, your lawyer has done his submission, and it is time to determine the outcome, and now you are going to sit among the jury and you want to be part of that.”

“Conflict of interest is not defined by the individual. Sometimes a conflict of interest, when you are managing standards, it is part of the performance standards. When you are managing ethical standards, sometimes it is simply perception.

“Will a reasonable man in the street, if you were to tell them of this, what will they say about it? If here, you can surmise that they will say it smells, then it smells. When you are a public person, just because there is no law that says you cannot do it does not mean you should do it. Even in the Bible, it says I can do all things, but not all things are good.”

It is worth noting that on Friday, July 12, SSNIT’s board of directors announced the cancellation of its plan to sell shares in the Labadi Beach, La Palm, Ridge Royal, and Elmina Beach hotels located in the Greater Accra and Central regions.

“The Board and management of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) wish to inform the public that the process to divest 60% of SSNIT’s stake in the hotels has been terminated,” Board Chair of SSNIT Elizabeth Akua Ohene said in the statement.

National food suppliers to protest at Education Ministry over unpaid arrears

The National Food Suppliers Association has announced plans to picket the Ministry of Education over unpaid debts totaling seven months.

The association claims that the government has not settled its arrears for seven months, affecting their operations. They accuse the government of intentionally hindering the National Food Buffer Stock Company’s activities, which impacts the suppliers negatively.

In an interview with Citi News, Kwaku Amedume, spokesperson for the National Food Suppliers Association, demanded full payment of the overdue amounts or warned of their impending protest.

“They have been deducting our money left, right, centre and when you ask for an explanation they are not willing to give it to you. In my case like this they have deducted almost three thousand cedis, so imagine the others.

“Buffer Stock deducting 3% and 2% and a whole lot. By Monday we will be calling a press conference. We have written a few letters but nothing is working.

“We want the government to pay our money in full. We are planning on serious picketing because it looks like they are bent on taking our monies,” he stated.

  • Banka chief jailed 3 months for stealing $150k from community

Banka chief jailed 3 months for stealing $150k from community

The High Court in Accra has sentenced Osabarima Twiampomah III, the chief of Banka in the Asante Akyem District of the Ashanti Region, to prison for embezzling $150,000 designated for community development.

On July 23, 2024, the court, led by Justice Comfort K. Tasiame, found the chief guilty of theft.

He was sentenced to three months in prison and fined 2,000 penalty units, which amounts to GH¢24,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional five-year prison term.

The chief was charged after he allegedly misappropriated $150,000 provided by Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd for corporate social responsibility projects in the community.

    Case Background

On July 21, 2023, Osabarima Twiampomah III was charged with theft under section 124 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29). He pleaded not guilty.

State Attorney Watkins Adamah presented evidence through three witnesses. After closing arguments on December 19, 2023, the chief requested a dismissal of the case, which was denied on February 20, 2024. The court found sufficient evidence for the case to proceed.

The trial ended on May 7, 2024, after the accused’s testimony and the appearance of Prof. Kwame Gyan Esq. as his witness.

    Details of the Case

According to the prosecution, Nana Yeboah, acting on behalf of the Banka community, accused Chief Osabarima Twiampomah III of theft.

In 2000, Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd received a ten-year mining lease from the Minerals Commission to operate on Banka lands. When the lease expired in 2010, the company sought renewal.

The community, led by the chief, opposed this renewal. In June 2010, the chief submitted a petition to the Minister of Lands, Forestry, and Natural Resources, citing the company’s failure to meet its social obligations over the past decade.

In response, the company offered $150,000 to the community for development in exchange for withdrawing the petition.

The chief and the community accepted the offer and withdrew their petition in January 2011.

“This said letter was also authored by the accused on behalf of the people of Banka.

“Consequently, the mining lease of the company was renewed for another ten years beginning in 2011.

“Upon renewal of their lease, the Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd also transferred their rights to another mining company, called Banka Gold Ltd,” the prosecution told the court.

The prosecution revealed that Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd transferred $150,000 to Chief Osabarima Twiampomah III as part of a promise to support the Banka community.

This payment was made with the understanding that the funds were meant for community development, not personal use.

“The Managing Director of the Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd, Mr. Ebenezer Baah Asare-Quansah, told the police that the payment of the said amount to the accused as the Chief of Banka was for the Banka community and not for the accused personally.

“The accused acknowledged receipt thereof per a receipt dated June 2011, which was personally signed by him.

“The contents of the receipt indicate that the amount was paid to the accused on behalf of the elders and people of Banka.

“The accused, however, failed to inform the people of Banka that he had received the money,” the prosecution stated.

“He also failed to release the money to the people of Banka for the intended developmental needs.

“The people of Banka, however, got wind that the money had been paid to the accused. They waited for a long time, but the accused did not tell them anything.

“Consequently, the elders of Banka approached him on several occasions, but the accused told them that the money had not been paid to him.

“Not satisfied, the elders reported the matter to the police, and the accused was arrested,” the prosecution stated.

The Managing Director of the company, Mr. Ebenezer Baah Asare-Quansah, informed the police that the payment was intended for the Banka community, not the chief personally.

In June 2011, Chief Twiampomah III received and signed a receipt acknowledging the payment. The receipt explicitly stated that the funds were given to him on behalf of the elders and people of Banka.

However, the chief did not inform the community about the receipt of the money or distribute it for the intended development. The Banka residents became aware of the payment and waited for an update from the chief, but received no communication.

The elders of Banka repeatedly approached the chief, who falsely claimed that he had not received the funds. Frustrated, they eventually reported the matter to the police, leading to the chief’s arrest.

During interrogation, the chief admitted receiving the money but claimed it was intended for his personal use rather than for the community.

He asserted that he had used the funds to cover his legal expenses related to the Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd dispute.

“But he said that the money was paid to him personally for his personal use and not for the Banka community and that he had used the money to defray his legal expenses, which he incurred while pursuing the matter with Gulf Coast Resources Company Ltd.”

  • NAPO asked chiefs to contribute to development, not join political parties – Fiifi Boafo clarifies

NAPO asked chiefs to contribute to development, not join political parties – Fiifi Boafo clarifies

Fiifi Boafo, spokesperson for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate, has clarified that Dr. Prempeh’s request for chiefs to weigh in on political matters does not violate Ghana’s constitution.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, during a meeting with the Nungua Traditional Council, encouraged traditional leaders to participate in political discussions, emphasizing their crucial role in Ghana’s development.

In an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Fiifi Boafo stressed that Dr. Prempeh’s request aims at fostering collective progress rather than challenging constitutional principles.

Mr Boafo explained that Dr. Opoku Prempeh seeks robust input from traditional authorities on critical issues like natural resource management to ensure that decisions benefit the broader society rather than just politicians.

The spokesperson reiterated that NAPO, is not urging chiefs to align with political parties but to offer their valuable perspectives as important stakeholders in Ghana’s development.

“He was very categorically about it. He said that he’s not asking any chief to put on the political party colour, rather what he is asking for is that if there’s a proposal, for instance, how we handle our resources, for example, mineral resources, how must we handle it?

“There must be a strong position from our traditional authorities in indicating the things that we think we should do as a country to help develop the country.”

“He’s of the view that for example, the constitution states that when resources are found in the land, the resources work with the state, whereas if it was a case of the chief giving out the land for someone to farm, and the chief has shares in there, but then when it happens in the case of natural resources, the opportunity given to the chief is limited. Is that the best way to go?”

“These are some of the things he wants us to look out for as a people going forward, and not just limit everything to the hands of the political class, who take the decision and seek implementation, but rather as key stakeholders their voices are heard and they must be involved in the development of our country.”

You don’t represent Ghana, you became Speaker by accident – MP to Bagbin

James Kwabena Bomfeh, also known as Kabila, has criticized the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, for sacking the Member of Parliament for Sefwi-Wiawso, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, from the House on Monday, July 22, 2024.

The former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) condemned the Speaker’s actions as highly inappropriate.

Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin ordered the Marshal to remove Dr. Afriyie following an exchange that displeased the Speaker.

Mr Bagbin labeled Dr. Afriyie’s remarks as disrespectful after the latter criticized the Speaker’s comments on the LGBTQ+ issue as prejudicial.

Dr. Afriyie said, “With all due respect to your chair, these preliminary remarks you are making are prejudicial, and I believe that as representing the good people of Sefwi-Wiawso, it doesn’t lie in your mouth to remind us of the things that you have said.”

Speaker Bagbin replied, “This is a completely rude remark, and I can send you out of the House. It lies in my authority to do so. I represent the whole country; you represent the good people of Sefwi-Wiawso. Please, Marshal, take him out of the House. I will not entertain such disrespect.”

Discussing the incident on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” show, Kabila described Bagbin’s conduct in Parliament as domineering and overly authoritative.

He argued that the Speaker’s claim of representing Ghana is incorrect, asserting, “You don’t represent Ghana…You became Speaker by accident!”

He further opined that the Speaker has a “misunderstanding of his position and his role.”

On Bagbin’s instruction to drive out Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, Kabila stated categorically that “it’s embarrassing…that move he made was wrong. The Speaker can send a Member of Parliament out of Parliament, but it must be on stated grounds in breach of their standing orders or the constitution.”

Former Minister for Central Region, Kwamena Duncan, has fiercely criticized Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin for sacking the MP for Sefwi Wiawso, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, from the House during the proceedings on Monday, July 22, 2024.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, deemed Dr. Afriyie’s comments highly disrespectful and angrily instructed the Marshal to escort him out.

Dr. Afriyie had said, “With all due respect to your chair, these preliminary remarks you are making are prejudicial, and I believe that as representing the good people of Sefwi Wiawso, it doesn’t lie in your mouth to remind us of the things that you have said.”

Reacting to the Speaker’s action during Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show, the former Minister for Central Region, Kwamena Duncan, found nothing disrespectful about the MP’s remarks.

“That definition of gross disorder…is it the Speaker who makes that definition? And that the point made by Kwaku Afriyie that this doesn’t lie in your mouth, does it constitute gross disorder?” he questioned.

He concluded that the Speaker’s behavior poses “a major threat to democracy.”

In an interview with JoyNews, a member of CETAG’s national communications team, Fedilis Kamaayi, confirmed their determination to continue the strike, which has now lasted over six weeks, demanding improved conditions of service.

Mr Kamaayi noted that CETAG members anticipated that salary freezes might be used as a tactic to end the strike.

He emphasized that this threat has only strengthened their resolve.

“When the directive was issued, it has even motivated and gingered most of our tutors and they are saying that they should even take the August salary in addition because until all the arbitrary awards are implemented, they can go ahead and continue to freeze the salaries,” he said.

Mr. Kamaayi mentioned that the members are mentally prepared for the challenges ahead.

This comes after the Minister of Education instructed Principals and the Controller and Accountant General to withhold the July 2024 salaries of teaching staff from the 46 public colleges of education due to the ongoing strike.

The strike, which started on June 14, has significantly disrupted academic activities, leading to many students leaving campus.

When asked about the strike’s continuation, Mr. Kamaayi expressed optimism that the situation would be resolved soon.

“We have students in final year who have one more semester for them to complete and we have also started selling admission forms for new level 100s to be admitted. So, if you look at all these things, it will not augur well for the educational system in the country so our employer will not go there.”

Meanwhile, Professor Samuel Atintono, President of the Conference of Principals of the Colleges of Education, has stated that the salary freeze cannot be reversed.

“It was GTEC that wrote the letter not to validate the July salaries so not until GTEC writes again, we cannot reverse,” he said.

System to issue flood warning to be operational before next rainy season – Oppong-Nkrumah

The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah, has announced that the government’s newly introduced Flood Early Warning System will be operational before the upcoming rainy season.

During the sod-cutting ceremony for the Nima-Paloma drain, part of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, the minister detailed how the flood early warning system will offer advanced alerts about flood-prone areas following heavy rainfall.

This system is expected to provide substantial relief to residents in the capital.

“The structural interventions alone cannot completely eradicate the flooding challenges in Accra, the Ministry of Works and Housing in collaboration with the Ghana Hydro Authority, Water Resources Commission, Ghana Meteorological Agency and NADMO through the GARID Project is establishing a flood early warning system for the Greater Accra Region.”

“The early warning system will provide advanced notification of impending floods to residents in flood-prone communities so they can take steps to protect lives and properties ahead of a flooding event”.

He disclosed that an agreement has been finalized with the service provider for the technology that will power the flood warning system.

Additionally, Mr Oppong-Nkrumah mentioned that all necessary and relevant equipment required for the program’s implementation has been supplied to the responsible agencies.

“In December last year, the ministry donated equipment to support the establishment of the Accra Flood early warning system to the implement institutions,” he added.

    Background

On Friday, May 17, 2024, Parliament approved an additional US$150 million from the World Bank for the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project. This funding will support solid waste management, drainage improvements, and other flood mitigation measures.

The World Bank financing will facilitate a range of initiatives aimed at mitigating floods and enhancing waste management in the Odaw River Basin. Key projects under this funding include repairing sections of the Odaw Basin, constructing storm drains in Kaneshie and Nima-Paloma, and creating water detention ponds. Additionally, the project will establish a Flood Early Warning System in the Greater Accra Region and develop a waste transfer station along with an engineered landfill site.

These efforts are expected to alleviate flooding in the Odaw River Basin by improving drainage, waste management, and infrastructure services in high-risk informal settlements. As a result, about half a million people living in low-income communities around the Odaw Basin are anticipated to benefit both directly and indirectly from these improvements.

Construction works for Ashaiman-Akosombo Junction road resume

The 64km Ashaiman to Akosombo Junction Road project has resumed after a nearly year-long pause.

This initiative, part of the Eastern Corridor Road upgrade (Lot 1), includes several critical components: the construction of a dual carriageway from Ashaiman Roundabout to Akosombo Junction, a flyover at Ashaiman Roundabout, an interchange at Asutsuare Junction, and the addition of 11 pedestrian footbridges and three river bridges.

Other enhancements include drainage systems and walkways.

Hon. Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Minister for Roads and Highways, recently visited the site during his trip to the Volta and Oti regions to review the ongoing work.

Currently, the contractor is focusing on earthworks between Asutsuare Junction and Akuse Junction to expand the road into a dual carriageway. Additionally, new work sites have opened up, including site clearing from Doryumu Junction towards Asutsuare Junction.

The project, which commenced in May 2022 and is scheduled for completion by November 2024, experienced a suspension starting in July 2023 due to the government’s debt exchange programme.

Do not shun away from political issues – NAPO tells Nungua chiefs

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has called on traditional leaders throughout Ghana to actively influence the country’s political scene.

Emphasizing the significant impact chiefs have in shaping national affairs, Dr. Opoku Prempeh highlighted the importance of their engagement and advocacy.

During a recent visit to the Nungua Traditional Council in Accra, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, encouraged local voters to support the NPP and its presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the upcoming December elections.

“My campaign is different, I visit every royal house to tell them one thing. I tell them to help us, pray for us, guide us, counsel us, and give the direction to us. So, the Ghana that we’re developing is a Ghana that will be developed in freedom.

“I implore every traditional leader, the elders that this game called politics, have you realised that the politicians have turned round to tell you not to do politics, if we didn’t do politics how did we come by independence? I’m not saying wear NPP colours or NDC colours.

“I’m saying that whether it is NPP or NDC, it’s your right to tell us what is right. It is not our right to tell you not to be part of us, it is your right, to crave it. The people of Nungua should crave Nungua, it’s theirs. Everything God put on Nungua was for the development of Nungua.”

Akufo-Addo’s daughters and friends have founded 42 businesses since 2017 – Okudzeto

Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has alleged that President Akufo-Addo’s daughters, Edwina Akufo-Addo, Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, together with friends have forty-two companies under their names in Ghana.

He mentioned a marijuana company,  Good Grow Limited, as one of the companies owned by Akufo-Addo’s daughters and friends.

He claimed that the trio have been operating these companies ever since President Akufo-Addo assumed the presidency.

In an interaction with the Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi on live TV, Mr Ablakwa indicated that these companies expand through to several sectors within the country.

“ Once again Gyankroma Akufo-Addo, Edwina Akufo-Addo, Steven Okoro as secretary to the company. Interestingly Good Grow limited, if you will recall in July 2020 parliament approved the legalization of marijuana, cannabis for industrial purposes. As soon as it was approved the Akufo-Addo daughters and Stephen Okoro registered the  Good Grow Limited company, they said their principal activity is to grow cannabis.

“Between Steven Okoro and Edwina Akufo-Addo’s close friend, Alvin Mensah. They have 42 companies across multiple sectors, including mining, and microfinance all over. They are doing brisk business. I have evidence to back them. I can confirm to you that based on the overwhelming evidence, the Auditor General report, the clear insider dealing, inflating invoices shows that politically exposed persons taking us for a ride and causing huge financial loss to the state,” he stated.

He cited mining, microfinance, and agriculture as a few of the many sectors Akufo-Addo’s children and associates have businesses.

Zuria FM reporter convicted for assaulting Alpha Radio boss

A journalist with Kumasi-based Zuria FM, Yussif Abdul Ganiu, known as “Nshola,” has been convicted by the Asokwa District Court for making inflammatory comments likely to disrupt public peace.

Judge Afia Densi Asare-Kyire delivered the verdict on charges of offensive conduct conducive to a breach of public peace.

The prosecution demonstrated beyond doubt that Mr Ganiu’s remarks were substantiated by both video and documentary evidence.

Assistant State Attorney Kwabena Amponsah Asare revealed that on April 20, 2021, Mr Ganiu made provocative remarks on live radio and Facebook, targeting Sheikh Mohammed Ridwan, CEO of Alpha Radio, an Islamic scholar, and philanthropist.

Mr Ganiu accused Ridwan of misappropriating public property and incited the Zango youth to revolt.

Additionally, Mr Ganiu stirred the Kumasi Muslim community against Ridwan, urging them to boycott Alpha Radio for its inclusive programming.

The court, after reviewing all evidence from both the prosecution and defense, dismissed Mr Ganiu’s plea and imposed a fine of 500 penalty units (GH¢ 6000) or a three-month prison term in default.

Mr Ganiu was also ordered to publicly retract his statements on the same platform and sign a bond to maintain good behavior.

“I am exonerated. This is all that I wanted the court to do for me”, Shiekh Ridwan told the Daily Graphic reporter in a brief interview after the court proceedings.

“My FM station is open to everyone… be it a Muslim or a Christian”, he said and that radio was rather a platform to bring people together and not a tool to tarnish people’s hard-earned reputation.

He stated that all he required was for the public, especially the Muslim community in Kumasi, to dismiss the negative comments made against him, as they had been condemned by a competent court.

  • The guy called Anyidoho is a buffoon – Nii Lante Vanderpuye

The guy called Anyidoho is a buffoon – Nii Lante Vanderpuye

MP for Odododiodoo, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, has voiced his frustration over the disruptions that occurred during the memorial service for the late President Prof. John Evans Atta Mills at Asomdwee Park on Wednesday, July 24.

Speaking to Eyewitness News, Mr Vanderpuye labeled the incident as “unwarranted.”

The event faced chaos when Koku Anyidoho, former Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, overstepped his allotted speaking time, causing delays for the second event organized by the NDC and the JEA Mills Memorial Heritage.

Mercy Araba Ahema Quarshie, the late President’s sister, criticized Anyidoho’s actions and warned of consequences.

Mr Vanderpuye held the government responsible for allowing the disruption and condemned Anyidoho’s conduct, attributing it to arrogance and a personal vendetta against NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

He accused Anyidoho of intentionally trying to sabotage the event and undermine the NDC’s efforts.

“You see, you and I all agree, even though in Ghana, we value the extended family system. There’s always the immediate family or the nuclear family. So as to dispute about whose family or who has the right to somebody, it cannot be questioned because the first point of call is the immediate or the nuclear family before you go to the extended family.

“So what happened was uncalled-for, unwarranted and unexpected, but I will put it all at the doorstep of the government which is allowing this ‘buffoon’ of a guy called Anyidoho…the way he’s behaving, he’s playing a ‘buffoonery’.”

“His arrogance and ego, he doesn’t have the humility that is supposed to be exhibited by anybody who worked under President Mills. All he’s doing is nothing, it’s about his hatred for President Mahama, it is nothing else.

“All that he tried was to do something to disrupt the programme he knew President Mahama and the NDC, the national executives were going to be present.”

Presidential candidates are not obligated to participate in debates – Lecturer

Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has stated that presidential debates cannot be mandated in Ghana’s electoral process since they are not yet institutionalized.

Dr. Asah-Asante explained that in countries where presidential debates are a standard part of the electoral process, they are formally incorporated into the system.

His comments come in response to calls from the majority in Parliament for NDC flagbearer John Mahama to accept a debate invitation from the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in the lead-up to the December elections.

In an interview with Citi News, Dr. Asah-Asante emphasized that without formal institutionalization, no presidential candidate can be compelled to participate in debates.

“Unfortunately, we have not institutionalised it, though it’s a good programme, since you have not institutionalised it, you can’t call anybody. You can make the call but if the person says no, there’s nothing you can do, it will just fall completely from your hand.

“What the vice president is asking for, if NDC wants to, fine, yes they can, but if they don’t want, and that’s it. You recall the NDC when they were in office they also called and the NPP also didn’t accept that,” he said.

Dr. Asah-Asante also emphasized that Ghanaians should actively interrogate presidential candidates about their policies during campaign events.

“Let us see the campaign itself, that one, the two parties and all the parties have no choice but to give us their manifestos, give us the ideas. And we will ask them the questions, that they will answer.

“But this one [debate], you realise that one party will be ready and another will not, and that will not support the whole exercise. I think the least said about it the better,” the Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana said.

We’ve improved, grown significantly under Hilda Ampadu – NaSIA to NAGRAT

The National Schools Inspectorate Authority (NaSIA) has responded to calls from the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) for the removal of Executive Director Dr. Haggar Hilda Ampadu.

NAGRAT’s President, Angel Carbonu, had proposed Dr. Ampadu’s replacement, criticizing her for inadequate collaboration with teacher unions and insufficient oversight of trained teachers from the Ghana Education Service (GES).

In a statement issued on July 24, NaSIA defended Dr. Ampadu, highlighting significant progress under her leadership since June 2019.

“The then National Inspectorate Board (NIB), now NaSIA has undeniably and significantly grown and improved.”

The authority reported a dramatic increase in inspections from 50 schools annually in 2019 to over 10,000 schools today, including private schools.

The statement also noted the production of comprehensive annual inspection reports that support improvements in school performance.

NASIA reaffirmed its support for Dr. Ampadu and her leadership, emphasizing their commitment to maintaining her role.

“For instance, we have moved from inspecting an average of fifty (50) schools per year in 2019 to over 10,000 schools per year currently, private schools included, producing annual aggregate and individual inspection reports which aid schools to improve on learning outcomes. We respect and value her leadership, and so would like to protect it as much as possible,” NaSIA stated.

Presiding Member for Yendi Municipal Assembly election marred by violence

Chaos erupted at the Yendi Municipal Assembly meeting as assembly members resorted to violence over the election of a Presiding Member (PM).

Chairs and punches were thrown when the recount of votes sparked conflict.

A viral video showed assembly members lifting chairs and attempting to hurl them at opponents.

The chaos led to the destruction of electoral materials needed for the PM election.

According to reports, the situation could have escalated further if not for police intervention, as neither side showed any signs of retreating.

The election of a PM has been a contentious issue, with members failing to elect a candidate after five previous attempts.

In the recent vote, Yakubu Fuseini received 22 votes, Alhassan Inusah Achiri got 21 votes, and one ballot was rejected, leaving both short of the required two-thirds majority.

Municipal Coordinating Director Mohammed Akalifa condemned the violence, stating that the failure to elect a PM was hindering the assembly’s smooth administration.

  • Supreme Court backs BoG’s move to revoke UniCredit’s license

Supreme Court backs BoG’s move to revoke UniCredit’s license

The Supreme Court has upheld the Bank of Ghana’s (BoG) decision to revoke the operating license of Unicredit Ghana Limited.

In a unanimous ruling, the Supreme Court reversed the Court of Appeal’s decision and affirmed the High Court’s ruling, which had found that the BoG acted correctly in revoking the license under the relevant legal provisions.

On August 16, 2019, the BoG declared Unicredit Ghana Limited insolvent and revoked its license under section 123 of the Banks and Specialized Deposit-Taking Institutions

Act of 2016 (Act 930). This action was based on the company’s insolvency.

Hoda Holdings Limited, the majority shareholder of Unicredit, sought judicial review of the BoG’s decision at the Human Rights Division of the High Court, requesting an injunction against the bank’s interference.

Justice Gifty Agyei Addo of the High Court upheld the legality of the BoG’s decision, finding it in accordance with section 123 of Act 930 and not arbitrary.

Hoda Holdings then appealed to the Court of Appeal, which overturned the High Court’s decision. The appellate court, consisting of Justices Janapare A. Bartels-Kodwo, Merley Wood, and Gbiel Suurbaareh, ruled that the BoG had not followed the procedural requirements in section 16(3&4) of Act 930, which mandates a hearing before revoking a license.

Dissatisfied with this ruling, the BoG appealed to the Supreme Court, arguing that the Court of Appeal had misinterpreted the law.

The five-member panel of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo and including Justices Mariama Owusu, Prof. Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, Ernest Yao Gaewu, and Yaw Darko Asare, agreed with the High Court.

They confirmed that Unicredit was given written notice of its capital insufficiency and liquidity issues, along with an opportunity to respond, thus validating the BoG’s actions as compliant with legal standards.

“We are also satisfied that the revocation of UniCredit’s license was done in accordance with the stipulated law appearing on the face of the record, and therefore reversed the decision of the Court of Appeal while upholding that of the High Court.”

  • Akufo-Addo’s reliance on family, friends has brought Ghana this far – Hopeson Adorye

Akufo-Addo’s reliance on family, friends has brought Ghana this far – Hopeson Adorye

Director of Special Duties for the Movement for Change, Hopeson Adorye, has blamed Ghana’s economic struggles on President Akufo-Addo’s reliance on “family and friends.”

In a July 17, 2024, interview on Oyerepa TV, Adorye expressed his dissatisfaction with the nation’s current state, arguing that the president’s close relatives, who occupy key government positions, are responsible for the country’s challenges.

Despite President Akufo-Addo’s initial promises and determination to transform Ghana, Adorye contended that the president allowed himself to be misled by his family members, resulting in poor governance and decision-making.

“You can see that everybody is expressing disappointment with the government, so let us be concerned about the person who will change the narrative,” Mr Adorye said.

As a former member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Adorye admitted he was once part of the administration but emphasized that his trust in Akufo-Addo’s leadership was misplaced due to the undue influence of certain family members.

Adorye highlighted Ken Ofori-Atta, a former finance minister; Asante Bediatuo, the secretary to the president; and Gabby Otchere-Darko, the president’s cousin, as key figures contributing to the country’s difficulties.

He accused these individuals of blocking progress and prioritizing their own interests.

“Someone will accuse me of being part, and of course, yes, I was. But Akufo-Addo, I trusted, had the will and the zeal to change this country, but he allowed his family members to mislead him.

“If you have Ken Ofori-Atta and Akufo-Addo tell you to pay Paa Kwesi Nduom and he says he won’t pay, how can you progress?

“His family members around him have disappointed him. I am telling you; I swear to God that Akufo-Addo was determined to change this country, but his family members disappointed him. That is why they say the effects of family and friends’ governments are bad. Asante Bediatuo, Gabby Otchere-Darko, and all,” he added.”

Family to bar Koku Anyidoho from using Atta Mills’ name

The family of the late Professor John Evans Atta Mills is set to seek a court injunction against CEO of the Atta Mills Institute, Koku Anyidoho, to prevent him from using the late President’s name for his activities.

The family accuses Anyidoho of tarnishing the reputation of the former President.

Following a disruption at the wreath-laying ceremony marking 12 years since President Mills’ passing at the Asomdwee Park, Samuel Atta Mills, the late President’s brother, expressed the family’s frustration with Anyidoho.

He condemned Anyidoho for tampering with Prof. Atta Mills’ grave without the family’s consent.

Meanwhile, Nii Lante Vanderpuye, the Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, has criticized the state for allowing Koku Anyidoho, the former aide to the late President, to hold a remembrance event for him.

“Auntie Araba [Mercy Araba Ahema Quarshie] is a direct senor sister of Prof Atta Mills, Cadman Atta Mills is alive, Samuel Atta Mills is alive, the son, Kofi Atta Mills is alive. And people will come and say they are the family of Prof. Atta Mills and they are coming to perform the remembrance and national security and the whole state apparatus will permit them to do that. When for years now, the state has recognised the fact that the NDC and the family have collaborated to organise such situations.

“When his memorial heritage was launched former President Kufuor sent a delegation, the presidency sent a delegation, so the presidency cannot say that they are not aware of the existence of the memorial heritage or the annual celebration of Prof Atta Mills’ memory by the NDC and the heritage,” Nii Lante Vanderpuye asserted.

On Wednesday, Asomdwee Park witnessed chaos when the former deputy general secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) overran his allotted time, delaying the second memorial service for President Atta Mills’ family and NDC members.

Previously, the family had accused Mr. Anyidoho of bringing individuals to falsely present themselves as relatives of the late President during his wreath-laying ceremony.

Our campaign strategy for this year will be a different one – NDC

National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has announced a new campaign approach for the upcoming December elections.

Instead of the large rallies used in the past, the party plans to focus on more personal interactions with voters.

The official campaign launch is scheduled for Saturday, July 27, in Tamale.

In an interview with Citi News, Nketiah revealed that the NDC will emphasize door-to-door outreach and direct voter engagement as part of their strategy.

“We want to reach out to the people, house-to-house campaign, retail campaign, that is where the emphasis is going to be. So, what we’re going to do in Tamale is to remind our people that this year, the campaign will be different. We must touch base with the people.

“It is cheaper for party functionaries to reach out to the people in the villages than to bring their people to a collation point to address them,” the National Chairman of the NDC said.

  • 12 discharged, 10 granted bail after prolonged years in custody without legal proceedings

12 discharged, 10 granted bail after prolonged years in custody without legal proceedings

Twelve individuals facing serious criminal charges, including murder, have been released after evidence revealed that the state had been sluggish in prosecuting their cases.

Many of these individuals, some of whom have been in custody for nearly a decade, had made fewer than four court appearances since their arrest.

Ghana’s criminal justice system is grounded in the respect for the human rights of suspects, as enshrined in Article 14 of Chapter 5 of the 1992 Constitution.

This article guarantees the right to personal liberty and stipulates that deprivation of liberty is only permissible under specific conditions.

Under the law, a person cannot be held in custody for more than 48 hours without being brought before a court.

The court then has the discretion to grant or deny bail. If the trial is delayed unreasonably, Article 14(4) of the Constitution allows the court to release the suspect either conditionally or unconditionally.

Despite these protections, there have been cases where individuals were kept on remand without timely trials.

To address this issue, the Judiciary introduced the Justice for All programme, which involves holding hearings within selected prisons for inmates awaiting trial.

At the Nsawam Medium Prison, 24 inmates were reviewed, resulting in 12 being discharged, 10 granted bail, and 2 denied bail. Among those discharged was Kwabena Nyarko, who had been on remand since July 2016.

Although granted bail in 2017, he could not meet the bail terms. Due to inaction by state prosecutors, Justice Kofi Akuffo ordered his release.

Another case involved an individual accused of theft and unlawful entry. Despite being granted bail set at 40,000 Ghana Cedis, he was imprisoned for over a year due to his inability to meet the bail conditions, and had not appeared in court.

Kofi Afum, charged with murder, had been on remand since 2018, despite recommendations from the Office of the Attorney General for his release.

Samuel Owusu Addo, accused of murder and held for nearly 11 years, was also discharged due to a lack of evidence and details on his case from state prosecutors.

Additionally, a 67-year-old and a 51-year-old man were released after spending seven and eight years, respectively, at Nsawam Prison without active prosecution of their cases.

The judiciary reports that such cases have significantly decreased since the implementation of the Justice for All programme.

Prison officials and the PoS Foundation, who facilitate the programme, are urging the cabinet to expedite the Community Sentencing Bill to further address these issues.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, July 24, marking the 12th anniversary of President Mills’ passing, Mahama lauded him as a true nation-builder who prioritized unity and the nation’s well-being over personal or political interests.

Mahama, who served as Vice President under Mills, highlighted the former President’s integrity and dedication.

He recalled that Mills was the first to voluntarily reduce his own salary to demonstrate solidarity with the economic struggles faced by Ghanaians when they assumed office in 2009, succeeding the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“My boss, President John Evans Atta Mills, was a selfless leader. He prioritised the needs of the nation over personal and political gain. When he took over from the NPP government, he was the first to cut his own salary as a sincere gesture to show solidarity with the economic hardships faced by many Ghanaians.

“He was passionate about lifting the vulnerable and duly allocated resources to social welfare programmes. He was a man who epitomised truth and honesty.

“From his life in Academia to his time as the IRS Commissioner, to becoming Vice President.

And throughout his presidency, he lived as he preached—transparently! His reputation for integrity was widespread nationally and internationally. Forever in our hearts, Professor Mills,” he wrote.

Two govt officials escape deadly robbery attack on Berekum-Drobo highway

In a harrowing incident, two Chief Executives from the Bono Region narrowly escaped a deadly robbery on the Fetentaa stretch of the Berekum-Drobo highway.

The confrontation involved Mr. Andrews Bediako, Jaman South Municipal Chief Executive, and Mr. Solomon Owusu, Jaman North District Chief Executive, who were en route back to their districts from a Sunyani meeting when they ran into armed robbers.

Mr. Bediako described the ordeal to the GNA, stating it happened on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, between 4:30 PM and 5:00 PM.

“They just appeared from the shoulder of the stretch, fired gunshots sporadically and signalling us to stop. They even hit and broke my windscreen with lumber, however, we managed to speed off from the terrible scene,” he said.

The group of robbers, about five in number and armed, had targeted market women and traders journeying from Drobo and Sampa to Berekum and Sunyani.

The robbery took place near the Fetentaa Refugee Camp in the Berekum West District.

During the attack, Mr. Bediako reported that the engine of his colleague’s vehicle, a fellow District Chief Executive, broke down. Despite this, they all managed to escape the scene of the robbery unharmed.

“We quickly rang the police and signalled all the vehicles which were coming from the opposite directions. Sensing danger, the robbers fled into the bush,” Mr Bediako said.
