Akufo-Addo to unveil 320 new homes for police officers

President Akufo-Addo is scheduled to inaugurate a new 320-unit housing development for the Ghana Police Service on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. The event will take place at the National Police Training School in Tesano, Accra.

The housing project, which commenced in 2018, features seven blocks of two-bedroom apartments and thirteen blocks of three-bedroom apartments, with each block containing sixteen units.

The development also includes a multipurpose sports facility, a kindergarten, and other supporting residential amenities.

According to a press release issued on July 19, 2024, by Elvis Adjei-Baah, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Works and Housing, this project is a significant part of the government’s strategy to improve living conditions for public service workers.

“The completion and utilization of this housing project will augment the government’s other housing programmes that are being rolled out to increase the residential stock of public service workers,” the statement read.

The Ministry highlighted that this housing project is designed to complement existing housing programs aimed at increasing the residential stock for public servants.

The Ministry underscored that this initiative will address accommodation issues in Ghana’s urban areas and help alleviate the national housing deficit, which currently stands at 1.8 million units.

“This project will reduce accommodation challenges in our sprawling cities and ultimately bridge the national housing deficit, which stands at 1.8 million housing units,” the release noted.

The new housing units are expected to provide much-needed accommodation for police officers, improving their welfare and enabling them to perform their duties more efficiently.

The commissioning ceremony will be attended by senior government officials, members of the Ghana Police Service, and other stakeholders from the housing sector, marking a key milestone in the government’s efforts to tackle housing challenges in the country.

It’s unrealistic for NPP to attain 85% votes in Ashanti Region – Muntaka

Former Minority Chief Whip and MP for Asawase, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has criticized the New Patriotic Party’s goal of securing over 80% of the vote in the Ashanti Region for the December elections, describing it as unrealistic.

Muntaka argued that the NPP’s poor performance in the region will be felt at the ballot box, leading to repercussions.

In a statement to reporters in Kumasi, Muntaka expressed doubt about the NPP’s ability to meet their ambitious target, citing the visible difficulties they face.

“With all the struggles that are so glaring, are you going to deny us from voting? Or how are you going to get the 85%? I heard somebody screaming about 85% and I said this guy is coming from some kind of place.

I’m very optimistic that this time around the NDC should be able to get at least about 32% of votes in the Ashanti Region.”

We are worried about the impending release of water from Akosombo Dam – Mepe residents

Chiefs and residents of Mepe in the Volta Region are on edge following the Volta River Authority’s (VRA) announcement of another spillage from the Akosombo Dam.

The VRA has begun extensive outreach to local communities, assuring that this year’s spillage will be minimal. Despite these assurances, the local chiefs are worried about the possible effects.

Togbe Korsi Nego IV, Manklalo of the Mepe Traditional Area, has expressed his apprehension about the imminent spillage.

“This year, we have received more sad news about a possible controlled spillage.

“Last year [2023], I suggested that committees be established to investigate and plan for future spillages, but nothing was done. We heard an inter-ministerial committee was set up,” he said.

“We have been hoping that the inter-ministerial committee would come to us, the affected people, and listen to our challenges. But up to now, we have not met with the committee,” Togbe Korsi Nego IV added.

  • I am bona fide Gonja Prince but I have no interest in Damongo chieftaincy – Abu Jinapor to ban

I am bona fide Gonja Prince but I have no interest in Damongo chieftaincy – Abu Jinapor to ban

Samuel Abu Jinapor, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Damongo, has firmly stated his respect for the chieftaincy institution and specifically for the Overlord of Gonjaland, Yagbonwura Bi-kunuto Jewu Soale. He categorically denies any involvement in the chieftaincy affairs of Damongo or Gonjaland.

In a statement, Jinapor addressed recent media reports claiming his interference in chieftaincy matters.

He said, “My attention has been drawn to media publications, both mainstream and social, to the effect that I am interfering or meddling in Gonja Chieftaincy matters in general and Damongo in particular. For the records, these allegations are totally false.

“As I have stated time and again, I do not have any interest in the Damongo chieftaincy affairs whatsoever. As a bona fide Gonja Prince, I continue to have high regard for the revered chieftaincy institution, the Overlord of Gonjaland, Yagbonwura Bi-kunuto Jewu Soale, and all other chiefs for that matter. My role and overarching interest, both as Member of Parliament and Minister of the Republic, is to contribute my modest quota to the development of Ghana, and my beloved constituency of Damongo. I entreat all and sundry to disregard these allegations as same are untrue.

“I am and will forever remain a humble servant of the Damongo people and Ghanaians as a whole.”

Jinapor’s remarks follow a recent decree barring him from visiting any palace in Gonjaland.

The Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Soale Jewu Soale, the King of the Gonja kingdom, issued this ban, labeling Jinapor as a destabilizing influence on the region’s peace and unity.

The ban was announced at the Jakpa Palace, where the King addressed concerns raised by a demonstration held by Gonjaland’s youth against the MP.

“Let me state this authoritatively that from today, no Chief in Gonjaland should allow Abu Jinapor to come by himself or lead or accompany any government official or politician to any palace in Gonjaland. Any Chief who disobeys this order will have himself to blame,” he said.

The King, via his interpreter, outlined several reasons for imposing the ban.

“It is not a secret that Abu Jinapor uses the powers of government to circumvent the traditional authority and orders of the Yagbonwura in an attempt to evade accountability and to counter the orders so given by the Yagbonwura. This is mostly done deliberately in order to get the Yagbonwura feel worthless, powerless and of no value in the eye of the public,” he explained.

He declared that any chief who hosts the Damongo lawmaker in their palace will face consequences.

“Enough of his arrogance and disrespect. I will deal with any Chief who will entertain him or in the company of any government official to his palace,” the Yagbonwura stressed.

Speaking on behalf of the youth of Gonjaland, Chief Jantonwura Peter Awusi Yakubu of Sakpala reiterated the ban.

“We wish to echo the voice of the Yagbonwura as was said at the Jakpa Palace, and on the basis of the above-listed instances of disrespect and insubordination, championed and led by Hon Abu Jinapor, that, the King would never grant audience to any Government delegation, political party or any person who pays him a visit, once it includes Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor.

  • No one can kill me, I move with angels – Koku Anyidoho

No one can kill me, I move with angels – Koku Anyidoho

Former Communications Director at the Presidency, Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has revealed that he has spiritually fortified himself, rendering him unafraid of any threats to his life from his enemies.

He stated that while he is mindful of his security, he believes he is under the divine protection of archangels who ensure no harm befalls him.

“I am concerned about my security but ultimately the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is protecting me. As I speak to you now, I can see my guardian angels around me. Of course I move with angels. They are four of them – Gabriel, Auriel, Michael and Rafael. They are arch-angels and not ordinary angels. Everyday I walk with them and so I don’t fear anything,” he said in an interview on Ghana Kasa on Kasapa 102.5FM on Tuesday July 16, 2024 after the Host, Bonohene Baffuor Awuah asked him if he is not scared of his life after sharing his views on political issues on social media.

Samuel Koku Anyidoho, who is a former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) stated confidently that not even a gunshot nor stab can kill him.

“Let somebody try to shot me, the bullet will not discharge. If someone tries to stab me, the knife will not penetrate my body. I am spiritually fortified in terms of the word of God. The Bible says no weapon fashioned against me shall prosper and every tongue that shall rise up against me in judgement shall be condemned. And as the Bible says in Isaiah… surely they shall gather and take counsel, they will speak the word but it shall not stand. So I know that God protects me daily and I am not scared of anything,” he said.

Samuel Koku Anyidoho, who also served as a Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), confidently asserted that no physical attack could harm him.

  • Ofori-Atta approved $34.9M for ambulance parts before leaving Finance Ministry – Ablakwa

Ofori-Atta approved $34.9M for ambulance parts before leaving Finance Ministry – Ablakwa

In his latest exposé on financial mismanagement and corruption, North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has unveiled documents from Ghana’s Ministry of Finance, revealing a scandal involving a $34.9 million payment authorized by former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta just five days before leaving office.

According to Ablakwa, the funds were intended for spare parts for the 307 ambulances distributed under the One District One Ambulance initiative.

The documents show that on February 9, 2024, Ofori-Atta approved the payment to Service Ghana Auto Group Limited. On the same day, he directed the Controller and Accountant-General to release $10 million (GHS 120,711,000), which the company received on February 23, 2024.

Ablakwa’s analysis reveals that the spare parts cost per ambulance is $113,695.456, exceeding the value of many fully equipped new ambulances. This raises questions about the justification for such a high expenditure when new ambulances could have been purchased for the same or less.

“In his last shockingly sleazy conduct, Ken Ofori-Atta, by a letter dated February 9, 2024, approved a staggering US$34,904,505.00 to be paid to the discredited Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the procurement of spare parts for the 307 ambulances purchased by the government in 2019.

“On the same February 9, 2024, the busy Finance minister instructed the Controller and Accountant-General to release US$ 10 million, equivalent to GHS120,711,000.00.

“My impeccable tracking of this transaction confirms that the Controller and Accountant-General processed and released the GHS120,711,000.00 on February 23, 2024, which was promptly received in the accounts of Service Ghana Auto Group Limited,” Mr Ablakwa wrote.

He added that “an analysis of this dubiously outrageous transaction valued at US$34,904,505.00 for spare parts for 307 ambulances actually translates into US$113,695.456.00 per ambulance.

“Instructively, checks from many Mercedes Benz ambulance dealers across the world show that US$113,695,456.00 is far more than the value of a considerable number of modern fully equipped new ambulances.”

Further investigations, according to Ablakwa, reveal that Service Ghana Auto Group Limited was incorporated on April 24, 2020, more than a year after President Akufo-Addo commissioned the 307 ambulances in January 2019. He claims the company was awarded the contract without a competitive procurement process, raising suspicions of favoritism and lack of due diligence.

Ablakwa notes that Service Ghana Auto Group Limited had already received GHS 115,342,573 for servicing the ambulances between 2020 and 2023 and that the company stands to make a total of GHS 653 million from the transactions, which is more than double the cost of the ambulances purchased in 2019.

He said the contract awarded to Service Ghana Auto was controversial because a special audit by the Auditor-General cited several issues, including inflated invoices, misuse of National Ambulance Service staff for maintenance, breaches of maintenance schedules, and an unfavorable MoU with the National Ambulance Service.

In his publication, the MP announced plans to formally petition the Office of the Special Prosecutor to conduct criminal investigations into the matter. He emphasized the need to hold those responsible accountable and protect the public purse from further exploitation.

“I intend to formally petition the Office of the Special Prosecutor this week for his office to conduct criminal investigations into this sordid affair,” he stated.

THE US$34.9 MILLION (GHS538 MILLION) AMBULANCE SCANDAL AND HOW SERVICE GHANA AUTO GROUP LIMITED HAS MADE A COOL GHS653MILLION THROUGH INFLATED INVOICES

Unimpeachable intercepted documents from Ghana’s Ministry of Finance reveal yet another scandal of ginormous proportions.

Five days before leaving the Ministry of Finance after President Akufo-Addo’s lame-duck Valentine Day reshuffle, Ken Ofori-Atta decided to teach us one more unforgettable bitter lesson. Perhaps, it was his special way of exiting with a vengeance after incessant and relentless calls from suffering Ghanaians to have him sacked.

In a grand ‘lootocratic’ conspiracy with the outgoing Health Minister, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu who was also affected by the reshuffle, the two abysmal performing ministers decided to cause more financial loss — it seems from the Sputnik V scandal, mismanagement of billions of covid funds, benefiting directly from loans accumulated, all the way to Ghana’s current bankruptcy — the two outgoing disastrous ministers didn’t think they have already wreaked enough havoc to have mercy on us.

In his last shockingly sleazy conduct, Ken Ofori-Atta by a letter dated 9th February, 2024 approved a staggering US$34,904,505.00 to be paid to the discredited Service Ghana Auto Group Limited for the procurement of spare parts for the 307 ambulances purchased by government in 2019.

On the same 9th February, 2024, the busy Finance Minister instructed the Controller and Accountant-General to release US$10million, equivalent to GHS120,711,000.00.

My impeccable tracking of this transaction confirms that the Controller and Accountant-General processed and released the GHS120,711,000.00 on February 23, 2024 which was promptly received in the accounts of Service Ghana Auto Group Limited.

An analysis of this dubiously outrageous transaction valued at US$34,904,505.00 for spare parts for 307 ambulances, actually translates into US$113,695.456.00 per ambulance.

Instructively, checks from many Mercedes Benz ambulance dealers across the world show that US$113,695,456.00 is far more than the value of a considerable number of modern fully equipped new ambulances.

Why sign a rip-off and an unconscionable sweetheart deal of US$113,695.456.00 just for spare parts when you can buy a new fully equipped modern Mercedes Benz ambulance for the same value, and even less?

What happened to value for money and love for country?

Further parliamentary oversight reveals that Service Ghana Auto Group Limited was incorporated on April 24, 2020.

Service Ghana Auto Group Limited was therefore incorporated more than a year after the 307 new ambulances were commissioned by President Akufo-Addo on January 28, 2019.

Typical of how this incurably corrupt government operates, the company was handpicked without a competitive procurement process.

Additionally, Government appears not to have done much due diligence on the directors of the company — I shall return to this in much detail later.

Deeper parliamentary oversight through GIFMIS assessments also confirms that even before this US$34.9million scandalous Ken Ofori-Atta/Agyeman-Manu send-off package, Service Ghana Auto Group Limited has received a colossal GHS115,342,573 in payments for shoddy servicing of the ambulances between 2020 and 2023.

This means, so far, Service Ghana Auto Group Limited alone will be making a mind-boggling GHS653million from these ambulances. This figure is more than double of how much the ambulances cost us in 2019. (Prevailing exchange rate of US$54million which was the cost of the 307 ambulances in 2019.)

One wonders if the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government procured the ambulances to save lives or they were procured to serve as an unbridled cash cow for corrupt politicians and their business collaborators.

What is even more depressing, the Auditor-General’s special audit titled — Performance Audit Report of the Auditor-General on Fleet Management of the National Ambulance Service which was published on May 25, 2022 had the following extremely damning conclusions about Service Ghana Auto Group Limited:

    I) Service Ghana Auto Group Limited inflated invoices;

    II) Service Ghana Auto Group Limited in many instances used staff of the National Ambulance Service for its maintenance even though all payments went to their company;

III) Service Ghana Auto Group Limited consistently breached maintenance schedules and procedures and

IV) The Service Ghana Auto Group Limited MoU with the National Ambulance Service did not inure to the benefit of the National Ambulance Service.

How can any Government which claims to care about protecting the public purse be aware of this damning audit report and still proceed to award an even bigger contract of US$34.9million (GHS538million) when Ghana did not get value for money after previously paying Service Ghana Auto Group Limited GHS115million?

It is also worth remembering that this is the same company which was exposed in a viral video a couple of years ago when an ambulance sent to them to be serviced was rather used to cart cement by their unscrupulous staff. (See attached the pathetic apology they issued at the time).

Who would have predicted that a government trying everything by hook or crook to have Minority Leader, Hon. Dr. Ato Forson convicted in that infamous ambulance trial for allegedly causing financial loss of €2.37million will itself be recklessly, mindlessly and criminally causing real financial loss in excess of US$34.9million through another ambulance transaction.

    Tomorrow is indeed pregnant.

I intend to formally petition the Office of the Special Prosecutor this week for his office to conduct criminal investigations into this sordid affair.

Stinky create, loot and share shall be fearlessly defeated!

    For God and Country.

    Ghana First.

Audit Service Board unnecessary, it must be scrapped – Domelevo

Former Auditor-General Daniel, Daniel Domelevo has advocated for the abolition of the Audit Service Board.

Domelevo, who had a public dispute leading to his forced leave in 2021, argues that the independence of the Auditor-General is compromised when recruitment power is held by the Audit Service Board.

At the 2024 Domelevo Accountability Lectures in Accra, he stated, “ My personal considered opinion, given what I have experienced, is that the board is not necessary for an independent institution.

“Read the constitution, you will see that the Auditor-General in the performance of his function is not under the direction and control of any other person. Now, the same Constitution constitutes a board and makes him a member of the board and says that it is the board that appoints staff. If they give you the staff, they can control you, they will give you chaff, hence the wrangling you heard about.

“In other jurisdictions, like Sierra Leone, they copied our law, their audit service act is almost word for word with that of Ghana, except that when they reached the board, made it advisory board to the Auditor-General and the Auditor-Gneral is the chair.”

Claims that a member of Ghana Paralympic has absconded in Norway false – NPC President

The President of the National Paralympic team, Samson Deen, has dismissed claims that some members of the team absconded upon their arrival in Oslo, Norway.

This follows a report from National Security Minister Albert Kan Dapaah, which was addressed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The report mentioned that Nana Antwi, a team member, was detained by Norwegian security officials in late April after attempting to leave Norway for Sweden.

The 11-member team missed a competition in Norway in late April.

In an interview with GHOne TV, Samson Deen refuted these claims, asserting that no team member engaged in such behavior and that the individuals involved are not part of the team.

“I am appealing to Ghanaians and want to make things clear that the Ghana Paralympic Team has not applied for a visa. Never has the NPC Ghana, never have I signed any letter for and on behalf of the Ghana Paralympic team, never have any of our assigns or officers of the Ghana Paralympic team applied for a visa at the Norwegian Embassy.

“What you have seen in the media is a forged letter by some group of people who are into disability sports development, Ernestay Disability and Sports Foundation. Ernestay is a person with disability, an amputee who engaged himself with forgery of documents with a former Ghana Amputee Football Association Secretary General, Theodore Mawuli Viwortor, who has since been suspended by the MPC Ghana on the 18th of July,” Samson Deen disclosed.

He continued: “I want to appeal to the people of Ghana that the pictures, images, and stories that are going viral have nothing to do with any member of the Ghana Paralympic Team. The letters that were sent with my signature were forged by these guys – Ernest Ayisi and Mawuli Viwortor – who fraudulently used my documents to acquire visas for some people who are unknown to the Paralympic family.”

Our decision to revoke GN Savings and Loans’ licence was guided by thorough evaluation – BoG

The Director of Communications for the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has addressed recent concerns by confirming that the Central Bank provided significant support to GN Bank during its liquidity issues.

He explained that the BoG collaborated closely with GN Bank, especially after GN Bank’s request to be reclassified as a Savings and Loans institution.

The decision to revoke the licence of GN Savings and Loans was described as a necessary measure to safeguard the integrity of the banking industry.

“We tried to take our time with the case of GN Bank. When depositors started shouting all over the country because the Savings and Loans company could not meet depositors withdrawals it was time to act,” Mr Otabil said.

Adding “Aside from the reported cases in the media, the Financial Stability Department of the Bank of Ghana received complaints of the company’s inability to pay their deposits on demand. To ensure an orderly exit of the company and protect the sanctity of the banking sector, the company’s licence had to be withdrawn in accordance with the provisions of the Banks and Specilised Deposit-Taking Institutions, Act 2016 (Act 930)”.

Mr. Otabil emphasized that the BoG has detailed the infractions that led to the revocation of GN Savings and Loans’ licence.

GN Bank, unable to meet the revised minimum capital requirement of GHS400 million by December 31, 2018, sought reclassification to a Savings and Loans company, which the BoG approved.

However, by August 2019, the BoG had to revoke the Savings and Loans licence after continued liquidity problems and customer complaints were brought to the attention of the Financial Stability Department.

We are committed to promoting the integrity, stability of Ghana’s financial system – BoG

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining the integrity and stability of the financial system.

The central bank announced that it will continue to work closely with law enforcement agencies to target illegal deposit-taking activities, ensuring that those involved are prosecuted under the law.

This assurance follows the recent closure of Dek-Nock Investments by the Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Bank of Ghana.

Effective July 19, the business, which operated in Nungua and Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region, was shut down for unauthorized deposit-taking, a violation of Section 6(1) of the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions Act, 2016 (Act 930).

The Bank of Ghana confirmed that investigations into Dek-Nock Investments are ongoing.

Customers of the company have been advised to stay calm while the situation is resolved, and the public will be updated on further actions as they occur.

“All customers of Dek-Nock Investments are urged to remain calm while investigations continue. The general public and all stakeholders will be kept informed of the next line of action.

“In collaboration with the respective Law Enforcement Agencies, the Bank of Ghana will continue to clamp down on illegal deposit-taking operations and all offenders shall be dealt with in accordance with the law.

“The Bank assures the general public of its commitment to promoting the integrity and stability of the financial system,” the statement said.

Anti-gay bill may not be enacted under Akufo-Addo’s administration – Martin Kpebu

Lawyer and human rights activist, Martin Kpebu has expressed doubts about the likelihood of the anti-gay bill, officially known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill of 2021, becoming law.

This bill seeks to restrict the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgenders, queers, and other individuals with non-heterosexual orientations.

Mr Kpebu argued that due to the Supreme Court’s tight schedule, there may not be sufficient time to address the bill’s constitutionality before it reaches President Akufo-Addo for assent.

“It will only take a miracle for it to become law. Lawyers are going on vacation and will only deal with emergency cases. This gay bill does not qualify as an emergency case. The court will resume hearings after mid-October, but there are still quite a number of steps to take before the court reaches a decision. Practically, this bill is not likely to become law,” Mr. Kpebu explained.

Recently, the Supreme Court postponed its ruling on whether Parliament had the authority to forward the anti-gay bill to the President for potential assent.

Only an experienced leader can revive Ghana’s economy, choose me – Mahama to Ghanaians

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has underscored the importance of electing “an experienced leader” to revitalize the country’s fortunes.

During a visit to the Awayaso West Wuogun and Adenta Constituencies in Accra on Thursday, Mahama highlighted that the NDC possesses the “experience” necessary to address and resolve the nation’s current “economic crisis.”

“Our nation is in crisis; times have never been as hard in Ghana as they are today… Unfortunately, the people who have caused the economic crises do not even realize there is a crisis,” he said.

Mahama said that if the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government “understood” the present economic crisis, they would have taken steps to resolve it.

“If you [NPP] have anything to do for Ghanaians, you have enough time to do it now. If you can’t do it in five months, there is no guarantee that you can do it even if we give you four years or eight years,” he added.

The tour commenced at the La Bawaleshie Chief’s Palace, where Mahama spoke to party supporters, urging them to remain vigilant for the December elections.

Mahama contended that Ghanaians are “wide awake” and will not be swayed by “false promises” from the NPP. “

The flagbearer criticized the NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, calling him an “inexperienced driver’s mate.”

“If you have two buses and one is a driver’s mate, who has been an apprentice to a driver, and you have an experienced driver who has driven you several times, back and forth, to your destination, which of those two buses will you sit in?” he asked.

Mahama reflected on the disturbances during the 2020 Awayaso West Wuogun election and committed to “pursuing justice” for those who lost their lives in that area. He promised that a future NDC government would establish a community day school in the constituency, which currently lacks a secondary school.

At the University of Ghana’s Commonwealth Hall, Mahama pledged to collaborate with private developers to build additional hostels to address accommodation shortages.

John Dumelo, who also spoke, expressed strong confidence in the NDC’s chances of winning the Awayaso West Wuogun seat. He urged voters to come out in large numbers on Election Day and stressed the need for enhanced security in the constituency, which has become “an economic hub.” Dumelo also called on Mahama to reinstate the licenses of failed banks if elected.

At the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Calvary Congregation, in the Adentan Constituency, Mahama reiterated his “24-hour Economy” agenda, outlining plans to stabilize the economy and create jobs. Mohammed Ramadan, the MP for Adentan, encouraged his constituents to vote for Mahama to ensure the NDC retains a parliamentary majority.

The NDC team then proceeded to Adenta Market, where Mahama addressed a crowd of enthusiastic supporters amid a vibrant display of party paraphernalia and stunt riding.

  • Even the president doesn’t have 20 soldiers assigned to his security detail – MP tells EC

Even the president doesn’t have 20 soldiers assigned to his security detail – MP tells EC

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bole Bamboi, Yussif Sulemana, has expressed concern over the extensive security detail provided to Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, stating that such measures wouldn’t be necessary if she fulfilled her duties effectively.

He noted that the level of military protection surrounding Jean Mensa surpasses that of president Akufo-Addo.

Mr Sulemana emphasized that if Jean Mensa performed her responsibilities properly, she would be able to move about freely without requiring heavy security.

Mr Sulemana highlighted that the presence of over 20 military personnel accompanying her is excessive.

He urged Jean Mensa to ensure fairness and transparency in her role to alleviate the need for extensive protection.

“I’m a bit worried for her. I’m worried because I’ve seen her many times with the military protecting her. If she should do the right thing, she would walk freely without even a police officer, so we expect she will do the right thing and she will not go around with military everywhere.

“Today, over 20 military officers accompanied her. That shouldn’t be the case. Even the president doesn’t go around with over 20 military officers. We want her to be able to move freely in this country,” he said.

The MP added, “And the only way you can do that is when you are fair, you are free in terms of ensuring that the processes are right and declare the winner. And we’ll be happy with you.”

In response, Jean Mensa has acknowledged her discomfort with the heavy military presence.

She explained that the security measures are a precaution advised by the nation’s security agencies due to the negative and often unfounded rhetoric directed at her and other commissioners.

She added that the nation’s security agencies believe this level of protection is necessary for her and the other commissioners due to the nature of the criticisms and unfounded claims made against them.

“To be honest with you, it takes away your freedom. You cannot go to the salon; everybody is in your space. You go to the market; everybody is in your space. It is not pleasant at all.

“But, I believe it is the rhetoric that we hear in the media that makes the security agencies feel that maybe they should provide us with this level of security,” she said.

GJA received GHC213k from NPP to organize a press against me – Captain Smart claims

The Host of Onua TV’s morning show, Maakye, Blessed Godsbrain Smart, (Captain Smart) has alleged that some members of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) received a sum of two hundred and thirteen thousand Ghana cedis (GHC213,000.00) from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to sabotage him.

Captain Smart in an interview with Accra FM stated that the recent press conference organized by the group was an order from the ruling government.

“GJA received 213,000 GHC from NPP to organize a press against me . Journalists must speak the truth and stop shielding others because of their personal benefits. It is about time we all come together to say enough is enough. I will advise GJA to donate part of the money to orphanage,” he added.

During a session on his show, Captain Smart cautioned Ghanaians against voting for the NPP in the upcoming December polls.

“This is an administration that must be voted against, it is only people who are not in their right senses that will vote for them again”.

Captain Smart, renowned for his outspoken nature, labeled such individuals as “senseless” and stressed the importance of not granting the party another opportunity.

In response to the presenter’s caution, the GJA convened a press conference to address what they considered an ethical breach on his part.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday (16 July), the president of the GJA, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour said, “Over the weekend, for example, we heard the disturbing and reckless comments of Blessed Godsbrain Smart aka ‘Captain Smart‘, made on Accra-basedOnuaTV. He described them as ‘beasts, people who would vote for the NPP in the December elections.”

Dwumfour said, “Given the severity of his utterances and the ethical breach, we call on the board and management of Media General, to take immediate action to mete out appropriate sanctions to Mr. Smart. This will not only serve as a deterrent to others but will enhance public confidence in the media organisation, as an organisation that detest unprofessional conduct.”

He stressed that while it is crucial to hold leaders and the government accountable, this should not be conflated with spreading hate speech and personal insults.

The GJA president also urged journalists to adhere to the core principles of their profession to prevent unnecessary turmoil in the country.

He advised all journalists, media practitioners, and media organizations to be mindful of their statements and reporting to avoid pushing the country towards violence and its potential repercussions.

  • Hoteliers to sue LOC, Sports Ministry over unpaid bills from 13th All-African Games

Hoteliers to sue LOC, Sports Ministry over unpaid bills from 13th All-African Games

Over 40 hoteliers are threatening legal action against the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) for failing to settle their payments after hosting guests for the 13th All-African Games in Accra.

The hoteliers claim that, despite receiving only 20% of the agreed payment from the Ministry, their repeated attempts to collect the remaining amount have been unsuccessful.

The 13th All-African Games, which concluded on March 23, saw over 13,000 participants, including 5,000 athletes, 3,000 technical officials, 3,000 volunteers, and 2,000 guests from 54 African nations, with many staying in Accra’s hotels.

The LOC, in collaboration with the Ministry, negotiated the accommodation rates prior to the event.

However, hoteliers received only a partial payment upfront, with the remainder promised for settlement immediately after the games.

Despite the event’s conclusion months ago, the outstanding balance remains unpaid. One hotelier, whose 40-room facility was fully booked for the entire three weeks, expressed frustration, stating, “we are disappointed at the turn of events. We have been to the ministries and the LOC several times and the accountant keeps giving us excuses that they are doing auditing. For how long are they going to do the auditing when we have clients to settle? We credited the food items to feed them, the toiletries etc. We credit a lot of them items, so the suppliers are also after their monies”.

“We are prepared to sue both the Ministry and the LOC, so we can unlock our monies”.

Another hotelier expressed disappointment, highlighting ongoing difficulties with the Ministry and LOC. “We’ve visited the ministries and the LOC multiple times, but the accountant keeps citing auditing delays. We’ve incurred costs for food, toiletries, and other essentials, and our suppliers are now demanding payment.”

The hoteliers are prepared to sue both the Ministry and the LOC to recover their funds. The LOC confirmed their role in negotiating rates but referred inquiries to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

An official from the Ministry indicated that a statement will be issued in due course to address the situation.

  • I was already focused, but marriage has made me more focused – Sammy Gyamfi

I was already focused, but marriage has made me more focused – Sammy Gyamfi

The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has shared how marriage has positively impacted his life and career, highlighting increased focus and discipline.

Married since December 2022, Mr Gyamfi described marriage as a transformative experience that has provided him with stability and reinforced his commitment to his goals.

He acknowledges that while he was already focused before marriage, the institution has significantly deepened these attributes.

“I was already focused, but marriage has made me more focused. Marriage has given me a better half that helps me to execute our plans and objectives. It has been a good experience so far. We are taking it one step at a time and learning a lot thanks to our parents and all the elders. We are making good progress. The thing about marriage is it doesn’t matter how long you have been together; marriage is different from courtship,” he noted.

In response to recent controversies, including a viral video suggesting a lavish trip to Miami funded by the party, Gyamfi firmly denied any misuse of party funds.

In an interview on the KSM show, he dismissed the allegations as part of the challenges in his political role and affirmed his commitment to integrity and transparency.

“It has nothing to do with party funds; some people put it out there for their own mischievous plans. There are aspects of criminality, and I couldn’t let it pass. There are clearly false statements about me. The judicial process is ongoing, and we wait to see what the court will say. I think that my wife has taken it in her stride. I have inculcated in her the need to have a tough skin just like me because of the terrain I find myself in. I know the detractors who put that out there sought to tarnish my image and discredit my voice. It is an old trip I made after I got married. I have never stolen money, and I will never steal money. I don’t know why my private life should remain an issue,” he asserted.

Reflecting on his political journey, Gyamfi traced his passion back to junior high school, where he developed an interest in politics and leadership.

Influenced by his father and inspired by figures like Ghana’s former president, Jerry John Rawlings, he pursued law and economics to improve his communication skills and effectiveness in politics.

“At the JHS level, it was very clear to me I wanted to be a politician and I developed an appetite for reading about political leaders. My father bought me an encyclopedia and installed the Encarta encyclopedia. Rawlings was my ideal, I started following him and took interest in freedom fighters.

In university, I initially studied Environmental Science, which wasn’t my passion. I began engaging in partisan politics at KNUST, and after completing my first degree, I pursued law and later studied economics to enhance my communication skills.

He also reaffirmed his steadfast commitment to serving the NDC and advocating for the interests of the Ghanaian people.

  • NPP could secure the presidency yet lose more parliamentary seats – Adomako Kissi

NPP could secure the presidency yet lose more parliamentary seats – Adomako Kissi

MP for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, has predicted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) could secure the presidency with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as their candidate, despite possibly losing parliamentary seats.

This suggestion follows a Fitch Solutions report that predicts a strong chance of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) winning the December elections.

Speaking on Channel One TV’s Big Issue, Dr. Adomako Kissi challenged this forecast by pointing to examples from other countries where ruling parties have lost parliamentary seats but still managed to retain power.

He referenced France, where the government lost 100 seats but the president stayed in office, and South Africa, where the ANC lost seats yet remained in control.

Dr. Adomako Kissi indicated that the NPP could win the presidency with Bawumia while potentially seeing a decline in parliamentary seats from 138 to 102.

He assured that the NPP is not taking the prediction lightly and is focused on their objective of breaking the ‘8’.

“My key point today Is that for me, from a mathematical standpoint and based on trends in the rest of the world, France’s sitting government lost 100 seats, but Macron is still in charge. My key point here is that there’s even a possibility, and all of us can hear me out, that Bawumia wins and NPP numbers in Parliament drops, that possibility is very, very possible, considering how things have happened in another jurisdiction.”

“ANC literally lost many seats; they are still there. When you go to England, the reverse happened. That’s why I’m saying that who knows, our 138 may come to 102, and then we still retain power, that’s also a possibility.”

  • I will launch National Apprenticeship Scheme to tackle unemployment – Mahama

I will launch National Apprenticeship Scheme to tackle unemployment – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has unveiled plans to address Ghana’s unemployment crisis by implementing a National Apprenticeship Scheme if elected.

During a large rally in Greater Accra on Saturday, July 20, where thousands of supporters marched through rain to the Nungua town park, Mahama outlined three major policies aimed at reshaping Ghana’s future.

He emphasized that the new National Apprenticeship Scheme would provide vocational training for individuals who struggle academically but possess practical skills. This initiative is designed to bridge the unemployment gap and offer meaningful opportunities for those who do not pursue higher education.

Mahama also announced the establishment of a Women’s Bank to support female entrepreneurs, recognizing their significant contribution to the economy.

Additionally, he proposed the creation of a 24-hour economy to drive rapid economic growth.

In his address, Mahama urged party members to vigilantly protect the ballot at polling stations and reassured them that his policies would benefit all Ghanaians who vote for the NDC.

The party’s official campaign launch for the 2024 elections will takeNDC place in Tamale on July 27, marking the beginning of an intensive nationwide campaign.

Mahama stressed that the National Apprenticeship Scheme is intended for those who may not excel in traditional education but have practical skills. He argued that not every student fits the conventional academic mold, and those who do not perform well in classrooms might still have valuable talents in hands-on trades.

He highlighted that all individuals have inherent abilities and emphasized that providing free education only to some is inadequate.

Instead, the National Apprenticeship Scheme will offer an alternative path for those who do not advance to higher education, equipping them with skills to secure employment and contribute to the economy.

“The first is the National Apprenticeship Scheme. As I’ve said before, not all our children are induced with the same mental ability. You can have the same children sitting in the same class when the teacher teaches, one is able to catch it immediately and so you would think that he’s smart, he’s knowledgeable, he’s intelligent.

“There’s another one who’s slow to learn and so we might do an exam, the sharp one will continue to the University and all that. But it doesn’t mean that the one who doesn’t catch it quickly does not have the talent God gave him.”

”Take those two; the one you say is slow and the one who’s smart and put them in an environment where they have to use their hands and you will find out that that other one is better able and more skilful than the one who gets A in class.

“So, all our children have a talent that God gave them. So it cannot be that we give free education to one group to the university and yet when the others fall out, they are left to their faith. Not all of them can go to the TVET centres.”

“So, our strategy will be to introduce the National Apprenticeship Scheme so that for those who cannot continue into tertiary education, they will be able to go into an Apprenticeship and learn a skill with their hands so they can also find work.”

Body of unknown man found on the shore at Anloga

Residents of the Atsugbor community in the Anloga District of the Volta Region are in shock following the discovery of an unidentified man’s lifeless body washed ashore.

Eyewitnesses estimate the deceased to be between 30 and 40 years old, and suspicions arise that he may have come from another area.

Mr. James Fiati, the Assembly member for the area, informed the Ghana News Agency that the incident was reported early Friday morning around 0500 hours.

“I received a call in the early hours of Friday about the unfortunate incident of a man whose body was washed out of the sea,” he said.

Mr. Fiati speculated that the incident might have occurred 3 to 4 days prior, based on visible signs and the condition of the body.

“What is worrying some of us here is that there is a closed fishing season so we do not expect anyone to be on the sea for any reason that could lead to drowning.”

The incident has been reported to the Anloga Police, who are currently investigating the case.

The deceased’s body has been taken to the Keta Municipal Hospital Morgue by the Police.

Mr. Fiati appealed to the public to assist the Police in their investigation and help locate the deceased’s relatives.

NIC unveils risk-based capital regulations for life insurance companies

Acting Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission (NIC), Mr. Kofi Andoh, has unveiled plans to introduce a risk-based capital framework for life insurance companies.

He stated that this framework would ensure that the capital held by life insurance companies matches the risks involved in their operations.

Mr. Andoh announced these plans during the 10th anniversary celebration of Prudential Life Insurance in Accra.

He highlighted that the commission would implement several new measures in the sector, including creating a Ghanaian mortality table for life insurance and an actuarial capacity-building program.

These initiatives are designed to boost the profitability of the life insurance market and enhance services for Ghanaians.

Mr. Andoh pointed out that the current mortality table used by Ghanaian life insurance companies does not accurately reflect local market conditions, as it was originally developed for South Africa.

He praised Prudential Life Insurance for its success, attributing it to adherence to local regulations and international best practices.

“It also has a very strong governance and risk management regime that incorporates anti-bribery, corruption, and robust anti-money laundering controls and procedures,” he said.

Madam Jane Mingle, Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Prudential Life Ghana, underscored the company’s dedication to sustainability through initiatives such as the COVID-19 Relief Fund, the Climate and Health Resilience Fund, and the Safe Steps Road Safety Campaign.

She also emphasized the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability, noting that their annual tree-planting campaigns have led to the growth of over 17,000 seedlings, including 2,000 mangrove seedlings at the Obane Ramsar site in Ada Foah.

Emmanuel Mokobi Aryee, CEO of Prudential Africa, remarked that Prudential Life is the only insurance company in Ghana affiliated with the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT).

He explained that the MDRT is a global association that recognizes top-performing life insurance agents for their high ethical standards and professionalism.

Madam Dorothy Tsidi, Chief Commercial Officer of Prudential Life, detailed the key activities planned for the year-long celebration, including PruRide and PruWalk, annual cycling and walking events aimed at promoting health and wellness, and a legacy sustainability project called PruCares.

  • Regional airports raised GHS13.13m revenue and spent GHS39.14m in 2022 – AG

Regional airports raised GHS13.13m revenue and spent GHS39.14m in 2022 – AG

A recent Auditor-General’s report has highlighted financial results for the five regional airports in the country.

The report, which covers the accounts of public boards, corporations, and statutory institutions for 2023, shows that the airports collectively earned GH¢13.13 million in revenue for 2022, while their expenditures totaled GH¢39.14 million.

This led to a substantial deficit of GH¢26.01 million, prompting a reassessment of strategies to enhance regional airport development and boost economic benefits.

The airports involved are Kumasi Airport (now Prempeh I International Airport) in the Ashanti Region, Tamale Airport in the Northern Region, Wa Airport in the Upper West Region, Sunyani Airport in the Bono Region, and Ho Airport in the Volta Region.

A closer look at the financial details reveals Kumasi Airport had expenses of GH¢15.68 million but only generated GH¢8.22 million in revenue.

Tamale Airport reported revenue of GH¢4.74 million against an expenditure of GH¢15.41 million. Sunyani Airport brought in GH¢95,626.58 in revenue with a spending of GH¢4.53 million.

Ho Airport did not generate any revenue but had an expenditure of GH¢1.38 million. Wa Airport earned GH¢77,250.48 in revenue while investing GH¢2.15 million in its operations.

Auditor-General Johnson Akuamoah Asiedu attributed the poor performance to low passenger numbers, a limited number of domestic airlines, and the underutilization of rentable airport facilities.

The report noted that the airports’ lack of commercial viability is impacting the financial health of Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) due to high operational costs and low revenue.

The report also warned that neglected facilities, like those at Ho Airport, might deteriorate over time.

To address these challenges, it recommended that GACL management incentivize domestic airlines to use these airports and launch marketing campaigns to attract more travelers.

Additionally, it suggested finding concessionaires for idle spaces to generate rental income and collaborating with regulatory authorities to ease restrictions for potential airlines while ensuring safety.

In response, airport management acknowledged the commercial challenges but expressed hope that new infrastructure and international flights could improve viability.

They stressed that developing these airports aligns with national policy and will create significant job opportunities during and after construction.

GACL emphasized its role in providing essential social and public services across the country and is committed to investing in regional airports to support national economic growth.

I bought govt lands for my radio and filling stations – NPP MP admits on live TV

A Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Amidu Issahaku Chinnia, has publicly addressed recent concerns regarding his acquisition of government lands.

In an interview with GHOne TV , Mr Chinnia who doubles as the Sissala East constituency, confirmed that both his radio station and filling stations located in Tumu, Upper West Region, were established on government lands which he purchased through proper channels.

“My radio and filling stations at Tumu are on government lands. I bought them,” he added.

He emphasized that his transactions adhered to the necessary legal processes, rejecting any claims of wrongdoing.

“It is not a crime to buy state lands as long as you comply with all the required procedures,” he asserted.

According to him, no law prohibits public officials from purchasing state lands, provided they adhere to the established guidelines.

Recently, the Deputy National Communication Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, made allegations against Mr. Chinnia, claiming that he owns multiple state assets.

Mr Basintale also accused Chinnia of benefiting from sole sourcing practices, alleging that he awarded contracts to a company linked to his associates.

“Honourable Chinnia was deputy minister, yesterday I heard him ranting on Good Morning Ghana two days ago that President Mahama bought this, President Mahama bought this state land. When he was asked to prove it, he failed to do so,” Basintale asserted.

He went on to list specific instances of purported state land acquisitions by Chinnia, claiming, “As we speak now, his radio station is on a land in Tumu. That land was government land, it belonged to the local assembly. His radio station is there. How did he acquire that land? Number two, close to the stadium in Tumu is government land, as we speak now, he’s putting up a filling station there. How did he acquire that land? State land. Yet he sat on TV and was mentioning President Mahama’s name as if that was even true. Meanwhile, you have been acquiring state property.”

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has announced that there are currently over 18.6 million registered voters. Additionally, the recent limited registration drive has added 778,447 new voters to the roll.

Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, revealed these figures during her appearance before Parliament to discuss preparations for the December 7 elections.

She also shared that a mop-up registration exercise will be held from Thursday, August 1, 2024, to Saturday, August 3, 2024, across all district offices, including the new Guan district, to ensure that all eligible individuals are registered.

Mensa noted that the voter exhibition exercise has been postponed to August to align with the mop-up registration.

Furthermore, the Commission has appointed 210,000 officials who will receive training to ensure they can perform their duties effectively.

The EC Chair emphasized that the Commission now has comprehensive data on all recruited staff, which will enhance management and coordination.

In addition, Mensa announced the filing fees for the upcoming elections: GH¢100,000 for presidential candidates and GH¢10,000 for parliamentary candidates.

To promote greater participation, the Commission will waive 25 percent of these fees for women and Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

  • Fixing exchange rate will adjust cement prices – Economist to govt

Fixing exchange rate will adjust cement prices – Economist to govt

Economist, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, has condemned the government’s legislative instrument designed to regulate cement prices, calling it a setback that could harm the country’s investment prospects.

The former Unilever Ghana CEO argued that the measure represents a regressive move.

“This country was under price control for 24 years from 1961 to 1985. What did it do? Did it change anything in this country? Indeed, it made matters worse.

“They say it’s all about price control or price disclosure. But if you look at the LI, it says regulate. So what is the difference between regulation and control? No difference, take the dictionary, it is the same thing. In any case, when they say price disclosure, what element in the pricing don’t they understand?” he said on Joy News’ PM Express Business Edition.

Earlier this month, Trade Minister Kobina Tahir Hammond presented the Manufacturing of Cement Regulation 2023 (LI) to Parliament.

He stated that the regulation will require transparency regarding the methods used to determine cement prices.

Professor Alex Doodo, Director General of the Ghana Standards Authority, has asserted that the LI aims to address issues related to pricing.

However, Dr. Ishmael Yamson has expressed skepticism about the regulation, noting that it is well-known that about 78% of the components in cement production—clinker and gypsum—are imported.

“So if the whole Ministry of Trade is telling Ghanaians that they don’t know the price of clinker and gypsum, then let’s go and shut them down.

“Clinker is not imported every day; you may probably discharge a whole shipload once every three months or so, and Customs are there with the import document. They know the price at which the clinker was imported. The Ministry of Trade can get that information whenever they want. They don’t need the manufacturer to give them that when it is public information,” he stated.

Dr. Yamson stated, “There’s no secret about it. It’s a lie, let them come and challenge me that they can’t find the price of clinker imported into Ghana. I’ve heard some of them say some cabal is fixing prices…go to the market, you see all the cement selling at almost the same price.”

He pointed out that this is not the first instance of government overreach in this area, referencing a similar situation during the John Kufuor administration, which also faced allegations of manipulating cement prices.

“The predominant thing that drives cement prices is the exchange rate. You fix the exchange rate and the cement price will respond to that. Is the Bank of Ghana prepared to give cement manufacturers a fixed dollar rate for six months or a year?” he asked.

He argued that the current developments in the sector will create a negative signaling effect, potentially deterring both current and prospective investors from the country.

“You asked me to come to your country to invest because you have a free market economy, but now you are changing the dynamics with price regulation? I am worried by that because you don’t change the rules of the game midway,” he stated.

He pointed out that the Ministry of Trade may lack knowledge only about the specific conversion processes used by the more than 14 cement manufacturers in the country.

He added that these processes vary based on technology and efficiency, and the Ministry could explore this aspect if it seeks further understanding.

“It is a terrible thing, and if anything bad has happened to this country, it is this LI to control cement prices,” he said.

  • Ensuring security during elections is not our responsibility – EC

Ensuring security during elections is not our responsibility – EC

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has clarified that it does not handle security during elections or ensure a peaceful electoral process.

Chairperson of the EC, Jean Mensa, emphasized that while the commission often faces expectations to maintain peace, security is not within their mandate.

Speaking before Parliament on Friday, July 19, 2024, she outlined that the responsibility for security falls solely on the Ghana Police Service.

“It is important to note that whilst we engage under the platform of the election security task force at all levels—national, regional, and district—the Electoral Commission is not responsible for security.

“Very often we’ve heard that the Electoral Commission is responsible for security, and we’d like to emphasize that this is a mandate for the security agencies.”

“What we do is collaborate with them and provide them with details of all our centers, provide them with details of printing arrangements to enable them to work with us and protect the ballot, especially when we are transporting these ballots to the regions.

“The police have full responsibility for security before, during, and after the elections. And they take all their security decisions without recourse to the Electoral Commission,” she stated.

She assured that the EC is committed to ensuring transparent and credible elections.

“From the registration to the declaration, our processes are embedded with one key ingredient, and that is transparency, transparency, transparency. As such, we will continue to operate in the spirit of transparency, fairness, and integrity as embedded in our motto,” she said.

Ghana must confront corruption to prevent protests similar to Kenya’s – Daniel Domelevo

The former Auditor-General, Daniel Domelevo, has urged President Akufo-Addo to implement strategies that will boost public trust in the fight against corruption.

He emphasized that such measures could help avoid protests similar to those recently witnessed in Kenya.

Domelevo suggested that the current government should learn from the Kenyan protests and take proactive steps to address corruption.

Speaking at the 2024 Domelevo Accountability Lecture in Accra, he remarked, “if only President William Ruto would have been minded last year or even early this year to do the things that he’s doing today, I think he would have been a hero. But now, even if he cuts his throat for them, people will not appreciate it. It is too late.

“The question we want to ask is, have the other African leaders, including our own President [Akufo-Addo], taken note of it? It would have been so heartwarming for us to hear from the President. Given the heat in the country and what I have heard from somewhere, I will reduce my cabinet or ministers to 40. If the President starts to do some of these things, I think it will help to calm nerves. It’s never too late. Those who have the ears of the President, it’s never too late to repent and do the right thing,” Daniel Domelevo opined.

On his part, General Secretary of the Opposition NDC, Fifi Kwetey, opined that corruption goes beyond the political elites. “If we have a society that is fundamentally premised on not respecting the character of people or the impact of people, then that society is premised on what you have in your pockets. That is a society that can never simply overcome corruption.

“And so, you will have a Jerry Rawlings [late former President], who will come and three heads of state will be executed, a lot of things would have been done. What we simply have achieved is simply because of a situation where people will go a little underground, and they will resurrect again. Because the real virus is in the heart of society,” Fifi Kwetey said.

Atta Mills pledged to serve Ghana with his last breath – Kwesi Pratt

Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt, has fondly reminisced about his experiences with the late President John Evans Atta Mills during the former President’s health battles.

At the 12th anniversary event of Prof. Mills’ passing, hosted at the University of Ghana’s Conference Centre in Legon, Mr Pratt recalled a 2008 conversation where he asked Prof. Mills about his health and his capacity to run for president.

Prof. Mills acknowledged his health concerns but expressed hope for improvement following a medical examination in South Africa.

“Professor Mills admitted that he had been unwell but insisted the doctors in South Africa had said that he would be alright. I left Prof. feeling somehow assured that he was worthy for the fight ahead of him and the National Democratic Congress on December 7, 2008,” Mr Pratt said.

Mr Pratt reminisced about a visit to the Freedom Center, where he had a conversation with the late President. Despite severe vision issues, Prof. Mills took part in the event.

Following the event, Pratt gathered his courage to ask a challenging question.

“Prof. Can you make it?” Pratt asked.

    “Make what?” Prof. Mills replied.

Pratt explained himself, and Prof. Mills responded with unwavering commitment: “I will use the last ounce of energy in me to serve the people. I can’t give up now. The country is in a very dire situation, and I am ready to make sacrifices to be part of the rescue team.”

Prof. Mills assumed the presidency of Ghana in 2009 after winning the December 2008 elections.

He passed away on July 24, 2012, a few months before the election while still in office and seeking re-election.

His Vice-President, John Mahama, was sworn in as President and later won the 2012 elections for the NDC.

Bawumia is ready to challenge Mahama in debate – Nana B

The National Organizer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) has affirmed the party’s eagerness to participate in a debate with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) under any circumstances.

In a recent Facebook post, Nana B announced the NPP’s readiness to debate the NDC, even if the event is held at the NDC’s headquarters or moderated by the NDC’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

“DMB is ready to debate JDM even with Asiedu Nketia as the moderator and at the NDC’s headquarters or JDM’s office as the venue,” Nana B stated.

This statement follows a call from the NPP’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for a debate with the NDC’s flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama.

So far, Mahama has not officially addressed the debate challenge. His aide, Joyce Bawah, has dismissed the suggestion, arguing that given the current economic situation, there is nothing substantial to debate.

Chiefs of Hwidiem to protest over poor roads

The Chiefs of Hwidiem in the Asutifi South District and Kenyasi Number 1 and 2 in the Ahafo Region have issued a firm ultimatum to the government, demanding the swift resumption of work on the Hwidiem-Kenyasi road.

At a press conference in Kenyasi, the Chiefs voiced their frustration over the ongoing delays in road repairs, which they argue are severely affecting their communities.

The contractor, Kofi Job, has been given a strict deadline to resume work or face repercussions.

The Chiefs have warned that if their demands are not addressed by August 6, 2024, they will stage a large-scale demonstration.

They emphasized the urgent need for action, stating that their patience is running thin.

Nana Agyemang, representing the three communities, criticized the government’s lack of response despite repeated appeals for urgent intervention regarding the deteriorating road conditions.

“The road continues to worsen with no intervention from the authorities. We urge all citizens to join us in the upcoming demonstration.

“While we are committed to resolving this issue peacefully, we may have no choice but to continue with protests until the roads are fixed. We hope that the government and other stakeholders will heed our call and take immediate action,” he added.

  • Downstream Petroleum Sector achieved GHS71bn value for 2023

Downstream Petroleum Sector achieved GHS71bn value for 2023

In 2023, Ghana’s domestic downstream petroleum sector achieved a value surpassing GH¢71 billion, contributing about 8.4 percent to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to Dr. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, CEO of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA).

The industry, which comprises over 3,000 service providers, is marked by significant local participation and delivers over 4 million metric tonnes of petroleum products each year. Dr. Abdul-Hamid noted that the sector has consistently generated an average annual revenue exceeding GH¢35 billion over the last seven years.

“Increased private sector participation has transformed the petroleum downstream industry into a vibrant and dynamic sector, playing a crucial role in the economy’s growth and development,” he added.

Petroleum product consumption in 2023 rose by 6.4 percent to 4.49 million metric tonnes, recovering from a 9.0 percent drop in 2022. Consumption is anticipated to continue its upward trend in 2024, approaching the 4.64 million metric tonnes peak seen in 2021.

At the Ghana International Petroleum Conference 2024 (GHIPCON) in Accra, Dr. Abdul-Hamid highlighted the industry’s role as a key supplier to neighboring countries like Mali, Niger, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Burkina Faso. In 2023, Ghana re-exported and transited 385,154,100 litres of petroleum products to these countries, reflecting the NPA’s success in addressing illicit fuel activities.

Additionally, he announced that Senegal and Gambia have begun importing petroleum products from Ghana, further extending the sector’s regional influence.

“The NPA recognises the vibrant and dynamic nature of our industry and is committed to formulating and implementing innovative strategies and policies that will ensure the industry remains efficient and profitable, and at the same time ensure consumers get the best value for money,” he said.

He emphasized the shift to a transparent daily deregulated pricing formula for petroleum products. Ghana is among the few African nations using low-sulfur fuels, with imports generally below 50 ppm, and has a zero-tolerance policy for toxic fuels.

The NPA’s technology-driven efforts, such as the Petroleum Products Marking Scheme and Bulk Road Vehicle Tracking project, have enhanced the monitoring and integrity of product quality and quantity. The new Cylinder Recirculation Model (CRM) for LPG distribution, being implemented in the Greater Accra Region, aims to improve the safety and efficiency of LPG delivery.

Despite these advancements, challenges remain, particularly with illicit activities. In 2023, the NPA seized 889,650 litres of diverted and smuggled petroleum products and imposed penalties on offending Petroleum Service Providers (PSPs).

The Ghana International Petroleum Conference (GHIPCON) 2024, themed “The Petroleum Downstream: Building a Future for Growth, Efficiency, and Sustainability,” is organized by the NPA in partnership with the Ministry of Energy, the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD), and the Association of Oil Marketing Companies (AOMC). The conference aims to address critical issues and explore opportunities in the sector.

Herbert Krapa, Minister of State for the Ministry of Energy, speaking on behalf of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasized that the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents significant opportunities for the petroleum downstream industry. “AfCFTA can enhance market access, boost investment, and drive economic growth by removing trade barriers and promoting regional integration,” he stated.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to increasing Ghanaian participation across the downstream petroleum value chain, supporting policies that promote local content, build capacity, and create opportunities for Ghanaians. Krapa also advocated for a long-term strategy focused on sustainability, urging the use of data to inform decisions and track emissions reductions throughout the industry.

Stop destroying our billboards or face our wrath – NDC tells NPP

The Mahama 2024 Campaign has issued a stern warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) against any attempts to remove or obstruct billboards featuring its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, or National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidates.

The Campaign team reported that the Chief Executive of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) had taken down a billboard of Mr. Mahama, which was installed by Alliance Media in Tema.

In a statement released on Friday, July 19, the Mahama 2024 Campaign condemned this action, describing it as “unacceptable and a needless provocation aimed at inflaming political tensions in the country.”

“Alliance Media, a legally registered Ghanaian advertising business, has the rightful permission to mount Out-of-Home (OOH) and Digital Out-of-Home (DOOH) sites nationwide. They diligently pay the required annual fees to the TMA and other assemblies. Therefore, it is utterly unacceptable for the TMA chief executive to tear down their legally placed billboard, which the Mahama Campaign rented and paid for.”

The Mahama 2024 Campaign expects Alliance Media to pursue legal action against the TMA for this incident. They warned the TMA chief executive and the NPP that such provocative acts, which incite political clashes and violence, are harmful to the progress of democracy in Ghana.

“We have noted a similar act in the Ablekuma North constituency, where the NPP blocked a billboard mounted by the NDC parliamentary candidate. And despite the NPP’s unwarranted provocation in various parts of the country, we note that institutions like the National Peace Council and religious and civil society organisations are watching,” they added.

The Mahama 2024 Campaign emphasized that such actions would no longer be tolerated. “If these provocations continue, we will be forced to instruct our members to take necessary measures to prevent such acts across the country.”

They urged the NPP to campaign peacefully and respect the rights of others to promote their political candidates and messages.

“Violence and destruction of property have no place in our political discourse. As President Mahama noted in an opinion piece on Tuesday, there must be “peace and decorum in our political discourse, especially in the run-up to high-stakes elections such as those we face in December this year’,” the Mahama 2024 Campaign further stated.

77% of Ghanaians believe corruption levels have increased in the past – Report

A 2023 survey conducted by Afrobarometer has revealed that 77% of Ghanaians believe corruption levels have increased in recent years.

Afrobarometer’s comprehensive survey across 39 African nations shed light on widespread perceptions of corruption in various sectors of government, including political leaders, parliamentarians, the judiciary, and civil servants.

The report indicated that 67% of Africans feel their governments are failing to effectively combat corruption.

The report also highlighted a troubling trend, noting that 71% of those who report corruption risk facing retaliation (Dulani, Asiamah, & Zindikirani, 2023).

“Two-thirds (67%) of Africans say their governments are failing in the fight against corruption, and 71% say people who report corruption to the authorities risk retaliation (Dulani, Asiamah, & Zindikirani, 2023).”

The study underscored growing concerns among African citizens about the pervasive nature of corruption within their countries.

It also revealed that nearly six out of ten Africans believe corruption levels have escalated over the past year, particularly in countries like South Africa.

“Given the corrosive effects of official corruption on popular support for and satisfaction with democracy, the news from recent findings about corruption trends is not good: In the eyes of ordinary Africans, the problem is getting worse.

“On average across 39 countries, nearly six in 10 citizens (58%) say corruption levels in their countries increased over the past year, including 82% in South Africa and 87% in Eswatini. Only three countries record majorities who say corruption decreased: Benin (70%), Mali (64%), and Zambia (53%).”

“If you are ‘japaing’ make sure you have a skill” – Mahama advises youth

Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged young people to acquire practical skills before considering relocating abroad.

Mahama believes that possessing a skill greatly enhances one’s chances of finding employment in other countries.

“If young people have completed school and have not found a job yet, they should acquire a skill so they can enter the workforce.

“There are many people who want to ‘japa’, but if you are ‘japaing’, do so with a skill,” Mahama advised.

Mahama made these comments during a mini durbar at La-Bawaleshie in Accra on July 18, 2024, where John Dumelo was announced as the NDC’s parliamentary candidate for Ayawaso West Wuogon.

Emphasizing the high unemployment rates in Ayawaso West Wuogon, Mahama highlighted the importance of vocational training.

He encouraged young people who have completed Junior High School (JHS) or Senior High School (SHS) but have not pursued further education to acquire practical skills.

He also mentioned the upcoming National Apprenticeship Program, which he intends to launch, as a key opportunity for youth to gain valuable skills.

Mahama urged those not currently engaged in education or work to take advantage of this program to enhance their job prospects.

  • IEA wants to manipulate 2024 electoral process in favor of NPP – NDC

IEA wants to manipulate 2024 electoral process in favor of NPP – NDC

The 2024 Campaign team for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has accused the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) of serving as a conduit for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to manipulate the 2024 electoral process.

In reaction to the IEA’s recent announcement of presidential and vice-presidential debates involving the NPP and NDC, campaign spokesperson Joyce Bawah Mogtari criticized the institute for failing to consult with the NDC prior to making its decision.

Madam Mogtari emphasized that Ghana’s constitution does not grant the IEA the authority to organize activities related to elections.

“It is completely unacceptable that the IEA would make such an announcement without engaging or informing the National Democratic Congress, one of the major political parties in Ghana.

“The Constitution of Ghana does not grant the IEA any authority to organize elections-related activities. The fact that the IEA has not shown the decency or respect to at least inform the NDC of its plans raises serious questions about its motives.

“The IEA is clearly acting as a front for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and seeks to manipulate the electoral process in favor of the ruling party,” parts of the statement read.

The statement downplayed the importance of a presidential debate, noting the party’s extensive and continuous interactions with people across the nation.

Additionally, the team warned the IEA against exploiting the NDC’s name to advance its own agenda in a deceptive manner.

“It is important to remind the IEA and the Ghanaian public that the NDC, led by our presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama and running mate Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, has been engaging with the citizenry for many years. Mahama’s online and offline conversations have targeted a wide range of audiences and focused on addressing the needs and concerns of the people of Ghana.

“Our well-planned engagements with various sectors of society across the country have been and continue to be extremely beneficial to the people of Ghana. In this case, we caution the IEA against using the NDC’s name to promote their activities, as this is a blatant attempt to deliberately misrepresent our party,” the statement said.

IEA has not officially informed NDC about a presidential debate – Mahama’s campaign team

The 2024 Campaign team for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has expressed strong disapproval of the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) following its recent announcement of a presidential debate for the 2024 elections.

The IEA has revealed plans to organize both Presidential and Vice-Presidential Debates in the lead-up to Ghana’s 2024 General Elections.

However, in a statement issued on Friday, July 19, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, the spokesperson for the Mahama 2024 Campaign, criticized the IEA for not extending an official invitation to the NDC before making the announcement.

Madam Mogtari labeled this oversight as “completely unacceptable.”

“The Mahama 2024 Campaign strongly condemns the recent announcement by the Institute of Economic Affairs (lEA) Ghana regarding a presidential debate for the 2024 elections. It is completely unacceptable that the lEA would make such an announcement without engaging or informing the National Democratic Congress, one of the major political parties in Ghana.”

The Mahama 2024 Campaign Team has asserted that the IEA lacks the authority to organize activities related to the elections.

“The Constitution of Ghana does not grant the IEA any authority to organise elections-related activities. The fact that the IEA has not shown the decency or respect to at least inform the NDC of its plans raises serious questions about its motives.”

The Mahama Campaign has accused the IEA of attempting to manipulate the electoral process in favor of the NPP.

They argued that Mr. Mahama and his running mate, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, have been actively engaging with the public for many years.

“The IEA is clearly acting as a front for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and seeks to manipulate the electoral process in favour of the ruling party.

“It is important to remind the lEA and the Ghanaian public that the NDC, led by our presidential candidate John Dramani Mahama and running mate Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, has been engaging with the citizenry for many years. Mahama’s online and offline conversations have targeted a wide range of audiences and focused on addressing the needs and concerns of the people of Ghana.”

  • Parliament approves contracts for timber utilisation

Parliament approves contracts for timber utilisation

Parliament has approved the Timber Utilisation Contracts (TUCs) for timber exploitation during the third meeting of the Fourth Session of the Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

This decision ratifies eleven TUCs from an initial batch of nineteen, fulfilling constitutional requirements.

This approval permits Ghana to issue Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Licences, thereby enabling the export of timber and timber products to European markets.

Ghana is set to become the first African country, and the second globally after Indonesia, to issue FLEGT Licences for timber.

On March 31, 2022, the Cabinet approved the conversion of 156 timber concessions and permits into TUCs, in line with Section 19 of Act 547, which was then presented to Parliament for ratification.

Act 547, effective from March 18, 1998, mandates that timber harvesting requires a TUC, replacing the previous system of timber rights under the Concessions Act of 1962 (Act 124).

The introduction of TUCs represents a significant policy reform designed to enhance the competitiveness of timber resource allocation.

Section 19 of Act 547 stipulates that timber rights granted prior to the Act’s enactment were only valid for six months, necessitating the application for TUCs within that timeframe.

Despite this, it took nearly 25 years for these concessions and leases to be converted into TUCs.

The recent ratification of these TUCs by Parliament signifies a major step forward in the legal timber trade, aligning with European Union standards.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources dated Thursday, July 18, this ratification concludes the process of granting timber rights and highlights the government’s dedication to managing Ghana’s forest resources sustainably.

This move also enables Ghana to meet its commitments under the Voluntary Partnership Agreement (VPA) with the EU regarding FLEGT Licences.

It supports efforts to combat deforestation and forest degradation, improves environmental governance, and contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • Hypocrite! Go and bath – Wontumi replies Blakk Rasta

Hypocrite! Go and bath – Wontumi replies Blakk Rasta

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Bosiako Antwi (Chairman Wontumi), has directed a sharp critique at reggae musician and political commentator Blakk Rasta.

Chairman Wontumi has accused Blakk Rasta of hypocrisy and advised him to attend to personal hygiene.

“Blakk Rasta be careful, you are not bigger than your boss, I own 5 radio stations and TVs, 5 online. You can insult everybody but you cannot insult your father. I am your father, stop that. I am not going to insult you today but I am trying to put sense in your mind. You are a hypocrite, go and bathe,” he added.

Chairman Wontumi’s comments come in response to Blakk Rasta, who, known for his outspoken style, dismissed Wontumi’s recent statements as insane and disconnected from reality.

Chairman Wontumi had claimed that, despite current challenges, the standard of living in Ghana exceeds that of the United Kingdom (UK).

“I acknowledge that there is hardship in the country. However, this hardship is global, and we are actively working to improve the quality of life for the people of Ghana. The standard of living in Ghana is better than that in the UK.

“For instance, even at social gatherings in the UK, attendees are required to bring their own drinks, water, and food. After paying rent of 800 pounds and other bills from a salary of 1,500 pounds, there is little left for savings or family expenses. In contrast, accessing healthcare in Ghana does not require booking appointments as in the UK.

“I urge journalists to provide accurate information to the people of Ghana, and for those abroad to honestly explain global economic hardships to their families. It’s important to recognize that COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine conflict have negatively impacted every country,” he explained during the media briefing.

But Blakk Rasta has voiced his skepticism about Chairman Wontumi’s statements, calling them insane and out of touch with reality.

“Our ancestors say the madman’s dance is amusing to everyone except his family. They would take him home, bathe him, feed him, clothe him, and even restrain him from entertaining others again. Chairman Wontumi is that madman,” he remarked passionately on 3FM.

He emphasized the disparities between Ghana and the UK, noting the superior infrastructure and services available in the UK.

“In the UK, they have electricity 25 hours a day, eight days a week. They have running water, accessible healthcare, and quality education.

“With this speech and some others that he has made, he is sounding like a psychopath,” he emphasised.

  • UG Prof explains why the true rate of a dollar now is GHC20 and not GHC15.64

UG Prof explains why the true rate of a dollar now is GHC20 and not GHC15.64

A Professor with the University of Ghana (UG), Lord Mensah, has shed light on the actual value of the dollar in relation to the Ghanaian Cedi.

According to Prof. Mensah, the real value of the dollar is higher than what is currently reflected in the market.

In a post on the X platform, he indicated that while the market shows that 1 dollar is worth about fifteen Ghana Cedis, forty-three pesewas (GHC 15.43), he added that the actual value should be closer to twenty Ghana Cedis (GHC 20.00).

Prof. Mensah explained that the lower market price is due to temporary government measures aimed at stabilizing the cedi.

These measures include rearranging debt, pausing debt payments, and reducing imports by making them more expensive.

These strategies, he stated, are designed to prevent the cedi from dropping too quickly.

However, he pointed out that these temporary fixes are not addressing the underlying issues.

He attributed these to Ghana’s inability to produce and exporting enough goods to strengthen its currency in the long term.

“The true level of the Ghana Cedi to the Dollar simplified. The shadow (economic) price of the dollar is about GHS 20. The GHS 15.43 on the screen is just the market price. Simple economic relationship to justify this: Economic price= Market Price+ Fiscal Adjustments
The fiscal adjustments can be debt restructuring, external debt suspension, or reduction in importation as a result of high tariffs. Open up all these adjustments, and you will see the true level of the Cedi.

“Usually the fiscal adjustments are temporal measures to suppress or fixed the free fall of the currency, which is good. Unfortunately, our fiscal adjustments are not yielding the necessary production (exports) to control the local currency.
This is not speculation; it is a fact, simple,” he wrote.

As a result, while the market price of the dollar appears more favorable, the true economic value is higher because the fundamental economic issues remain unresolved.

The renowned Financial Economist and Executive Director of the Centre for Economics and Finance emphasised that without addressing these core problems, the Ghanaian Cedi will continue to face pressure, and the true value of the dollar will remain higher than the market price suggests.

Takoradi: Ahantaman SHS Dormitory gutted by fire

On Wednesday, July 18, 2024, a fire completely destroyed the dormitory of five students at the Ahantaman Senior High School (SHS) in the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region.

The pupils had left the dorm to go to class when the incident happened, according to Charles Mintaba, the chairman of the school’s Parents Teachers Association (PTA), who verified the incident to Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, the host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show.

“The fire broke out around 7:30am when all the students had left for their classes. We suspect an electrical fault to have caused the outbreak. Trunks, beds, bed sheets, provisions, books, and other belongings of students amounting to thousands of Ghana Cedis have been completely burnt”, he indicated.

To put out the fire, firefighters from the Western Region Fire Command raced to the scene.

Although the precise cause of the fire is unknown, an electrical malfunction is thought to be to blame.

“We are calling on parents, organizations, philanthropists and other individuals to come to the aid of the school, these students have had all their belongings burnt and we know the current economic situation of the country.

“It will be difficult for their parents to immediately replace the burnt items. We must all come on board and assist the situation. We are pleading with all to stretch a helping hand,” he added.

  • Apologize to Ghanaians for collapsing the economy – Jantuah tells Akufo-Addo

Apologize to Ghanaians for collapsing the economy – Jantuah tells Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has been advised by prominent Convention People’s Party (CPP) member, Kwame Jantuah to apologize to Ghanaians for the economic suffering they endure.

He described the financial struggles that resulted in pensioners staging picketings against their enrollment in the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), which in turn caused multiple business failures and worsened the situation.

In response to a question about the economic difficulties raised during a discussion on Friday, July 19, on TV3’s New Day program, Mr. Jantuah said that since Ghanaians are tolerant, they will probably accept a sincere apology from Mr. Akufo-Addo.

“Is this not the first time pensioners have picked? Ask for forgiveness from Ghanaians because Ghanaians are very forgiving, if you accept you that have done something wrong they will forgive you, apologize to them that you haven’t managed the economy well.”

Regarding good governance, Mr. Jantuah noted that constitutional amendments are necessary to rectify certain flaws in the current governance model.

He claimed, for example, that the president has been granted far too much authority. This needs to change, he said.

“The winner takes all concept, is it helping? Local government, is it not centralized at the upper echelons, local government is not working now. if it was a working station in the district we would have been able to handle it.

“The constitution, this constitution has ruled for over 30 years, there are certain parts of it hurting us today, one of it is executive power, are we ready to look at the executive power?

“I feel that the next president, the first mindset should be how do we have a government of national unity. There are brains who are sitting on the fence who can come and help.”

We have not stolen the ideologies, principles of PNC – PNP

The People’s National Party (PNP) founder, Janet Nabla, has refuted claims made by her organization that it is adopting the philosophies and values of the People’s National Convention (PNC).

She claims that the PNP and the PNC are completely unlike from one another and that the PNP has no plans to steal PNC members or mislead voters.

The PNC has filed an appeal with the Electoral Commission (EC) asking that the final certificate of PNP registration be withheld.

Given that the PNP was the previous party that paved the way for the PNC’s formation, the PNC’s legal representatives voiced concerns about the name similarity in a statement sent to the EC on July 16.

They contend that voters may become confused as a result of this similarity.

Nabla vehemently denied this assertion in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM on Thursday.

She urged the PNC’s leader, “Mr Apasera, work hard with your PNC. Trust me, we have nothing in common. Our party symbols and things are different.

“The truth is that we don’t want anybody from the PNC who loves you to come to us, that is the truth. We don’t because we know the challenges of the PNC.”

She added, “When you have a new party you will want to work with people who love the truth, transparency, and have integrity.

“Those are the people we want to work with and believe me, those who love the PNC now cannot qualify to be under those brackets I have just mentioned.”

2024 election: We will never accept a rigged result – Movement for Change warns EC

The Movement for Change has made it clear that, in the event that there is proof that the election was rigged, it will not accept the results of the December 7 election.

This comes after the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, urged political parties to recognize the results of the general elections in 2024.

Jean Mensa urged political leaders to accept the results of the polls and guaranteed transparent elections during the Wednesday presentation of the Democracy Cup to the EC by the leadership of Parliament in Accra.

“Just like in a football match, we serve as the midwives that birth the elections. We are the referees that conduct and lay the elections and the processes that lead to election day itself.

“So, as referees, we are committed to ensuring that our activities from now in the lead-up to the election and all our electoral processes are transparent, open, fair, and involve the collaboration of our key stakeholders, that is, the political parties and the citizenry.

“We commit to ensuring transparency in all aspects of our work… We will commit to maintaining and showing that level of transparency across all aspects of our work.

“So, we also want to entreat and call upon the contestants of the election to accept the outcomes of the election. Surely there will be a winner and surely there will be losers,” she stated.

Leading member of the Movement for Change, Solomon Owusu, commented further on the matter on Thursday during an interview on the Ghana Kasa show on Kasapa 102.5FM/Agoo TV.

He claimed that the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission does not have the authority to order political parties to accept election results.

“If you organize a free, fair, and transparent election, who will have cause to dispute the results? We know that in every election it is either you win or lose. But we will never accept any outcome of an election when it is clear that the Electoral Commission colluded with others to rig it in favor of a particular political party. As for that one, we will never accept that result. If it is the EC’s intention to rig the election, that is why they and President Akufo-Addo are preparing the minds of Ghanaians, then they must be very careful.”

He added: “The EC has only one mandate: to organize a free, fair, and transparent election. If you conduct a bogus election and tell us to accept the outcome, we will resist with vehemence and all the power we can marshal.”

Don’t disrespect the military on December 7 – Allotey Jacobs to Ghanaians

Bernard Allotey Jacobs has expressed his gratitude for the Ghana Armed Forces’ (GAF) pledge to maintain peace and stability during the elections on December 7.

In the approaching elections, the GAF have declared that they will uphold their professionalism.

The GAF will work with other security agencies to vigourously guard Ghana’s borders against any external threats, as stressed by Chief of Defense Staff Lieutenant General Thomas Oppong-Peprah.

“We want to assure our father and everyone that together, we will continue to maintain the peace and security of this country and we will continue to perform our duties as the Ghana Armed Forces to ensure that this country’s safety, stability, and peace are all well maintained and we will need his prayers in this direction.”

“As we prepare for this year’s elections, we want to assure everyone in Ghana that we will play our role professionally to ensure that peace and security are maintained,” he assured.

Bernard Allotey Jacobs praised the Chief of Defense Staff during the “Kokrokoo” discussion program on Peace FM, stating,”he’s spoken well and that’s what the international community, investor community, Ghanaians would want to hear that we don’t record violence in the elections”.

Allotey Jacobs warned politicians not to provoke the Military, stressing “when people are obsessed with power, they know no bounds…People should not provoke the Military. Politicians should not provoke the Military”.

He advised the political parties to “do the appropriate thing” by training “your polling agents very well and don’t allow your monitoring team who move from one polling station to other to behave as if they are electoral officers to dictate to the EC officials at the polling stations”.
