Former TOR MD extradited to US for alleged corruption

A former Managing Director of Tema Oil Refinery, Asante Kwaku Berko, who was accused of bribing Ghanaian government officials through the U.S. financial system, has reportedly been extradited from the United Kingdom to the United States.

According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New a former Ghanaian-American banker, York, Kwaku Berko, has been indicted for allegedly violating the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) and money laundering. He is accused of bribing Ghanaian government officials to secure a power plant deal and laundering the payments through the U.S. financial system.

The press release, available on the U.S. Department of Justice website, indicated that Berko arrived in the U.S. on Monday and is scheduled to be arraigned in federal court in Brooklyn today before Magistrate Judge Lois Bloom.

The extradition of Kwaku Berko was announced by U.S. officials, including Breon Peace, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York; Nicole M. Argentieri, Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Head of the Criminal Division; and Christie M. Curtis, Acting Assistant Director in Charge, Federal Bureau of Investigation, New York Field Office (FBI).

U.S. Attorney Breon Peace confirmed the charges against Berko, stating, “As alleged, the defendant bribed Ghanaian government officials to secure a lucrative development contract relying on the US banking system to execute his scheme. My Office is committed to rooting out bribery and other criminal practices that create inequities in the playing field for business both here and abroad and exploit the US banking system.”

Acting FBI Assistant Director Curtis emphasized that while the crimes were not against the U.S., the FBI would not allow the misuse of their financial system.

“For over two years, Asante Berko, a dual citizen of the US and Ghana, allegedly bribed Ghanaian government officials to monopolise a promising business deal and used United States bank accounts to transfer such kickbacks. Financially influencing decision-makers, including those overseas, jeopardises the integrity of affected countries while creating an unfair advantage to those promoting the bribery scheme. The FBI will not permit citizens, regardless of their nationality, to obtain corrupt contracts by exploiting foreign countries and utilising our nation to facilitate the movement of unlawful payments,” stated FBI Assistant Director in Charge Curtis,” he is quoted in the statement.

The release further indicated that Berko conspired to pay hundreds of thousands in bribes to Ghanaian government officials between approximately December 2014 and March 2017.

It also noted that Berko is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the courts. If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison for conspiring to commit money laundering and five years in prison for each count of violating the FCPA and conspiring to violate the FCPA.

Two-thirds of Ghana’s coastline at risk due to erosion – Ghana Hydrological Authority

The Ghana Hydrological Authority has issued a warning that two-thirds of the country’s coastline is at risk of erosion, necessitating urgent protection to prevent the loss of critical national assets.

During a media briefing, the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. John Kissi, revealed that approximately 370 km of the 550 km coastline is vulnerable and needs immediate attention.

Key assets at risk include the Aboadze Power Enclave, St. Augustine SHS, the Denu-Alao Highway, and Cape Coast Nursing and Midwifery Training College.

“Now within that 290-kilometre stretch, there are various important national assets at risk that need urgent action to protect them. We can talk of the Aboadze Power Enclave, where we have thermal plants that need protection, to safeguard in all together about 730 megawatts.

“We have important strategic roads in Cape Coast where we have the Accra-Takoradi road that is at risk, along with our educational institutions like St. Augustine SHS, UCC and Cape Coast Nursing and Midwifery Training College.

He emphasized the need for substantial investment from both the government and the private sector in coastal and climate adaptation and management strategies to mitigate the threat.

Dr. Kissi also urged the public to avoid sand-winning activities that exacerbate coastal erosion.

“All we are saying is that the government is doing a lot, we have already seen the eight ongoing projects, those that have already been completed but we are also urging the government to do more, to invest a bit more especially in those areas to protect the strategic assets and we are also calling on the private sector, some of them have a business along this coastline that are at risk if steps are not taken to protect them.”

“We invite the private sector to partner with us to come on board and invest in coastal protection and also to make some investments in our national hydrological fund.”

A/R: Nahinso Chief detained for conducting unauthorized road repairs

Officials of the Asokwa Municipal Assembly orchestrated the arrest of the Chief of Nahinso, Nana Addo Boaman, for conducting road repairs without obtaining official permission.

The Chief, who was detained and later released on bail over the weekend, asserted that he took action after authorities repeatedly failed to address the road issues, which have been causing flooding despite ongoing appeals from motorists and residents.

For years, the residents and motorists of Nahinso, a community within the Asokwa Municipality that borders the Bosomtwi District and Oforikrom Municipality, have complained about the poor road conditions.

The road construction was halted after the drains were built, exacerbating the problems for road users.

Pits formed on sections of the road due to alleged sand-winning activities pose significant hazards to motorists.

These pits often lead to flooding, complicating movement and impacting nearby houses.

Nana Addo Boaman began filling the pits and repairing the road to make it passable after failed attempts to prompt authorities to resolve the issue.

However, some officials from the Asokwa Municipal Assembly intervened, stating he lacked the necessary permission to proceed.

He was arrested by the police at the Asokwa District Command but was granted bail over the weekend. The Assembly maintains that the Chief did not follow the proper procedures before commencing the road repairs.

Despite the arrest and ongoing threats, Nana Boaman has declared he will not abandon his efforts to fix the road.

Over GHS800k missing from GHS1m school feeding application form sales – AG

The 2022 Auditor-General’s (AG) report has revealed that GH¢831,776.00 generated from the sale of forms for selecting caterers for the Ghana School Feeding Programme in the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 academic years remains unaccounted for.

According to the report, 21,880 application forms were sold at GH¢50 each, yielding GH¢1,094,000.00, but only GH¢262,224.00 was recovered.

Despite efforts by the national coordinator to recover the outstanding amount, GH¢831,776.00 remained unrecovered as of the audit period from 2017 to 2022.

The audit also highlighted that while reminders were sent to defaulting Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to settle their debts by August 31, 2022, only six out of 225 had responded by the time of the audit.

“We noted from the correspondence files that, within the audit period the National Secretariat through the MMDAs advertised nationwide in 2017 for prospective caterers to apply to provide catering services to beneficiary schools for the 2017/2018 and 2018/2019 academic years as required.

“The MMDCEs sold a total of 21,880 application forms at GH¢50 each and realised a total amount of GH¢1,094,000.00 from the sale. However, the NS recovered GH¢262,224.00. The remaining amount of GH¢831,776.00 was still outstanding as at the time of the audit.

“The correspondences indicated that the National Coordinator, through the Sector Ministry, sought the assistance of the Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGD&RD), and the Head of the Local Government Services to retrieve the outstanding amount from the affected MMDCEs, and a reminder to the defaulting MMDCEs to pay the outstanding amount by 31 August 2022. However, as at the time of the audit, six of the 225 MMDCEs had responded.”

I am open to debating issues related to the mining sector – Deputy Lands Minister

Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, expressed his readiness to engage in debates concerning Ghana’s mining sector management and progress.

“I am ready to debate anyone on the mining sector. We are not talking enough about the good things we[NPP government] have done in the mining sector, which is why I have taken it upon myself to tell Ghanaians what the government has accomplished,” he asserted.

During an exclusive interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem on Tuesday, Mr. Duker affirmed that miners expressed satisfaction with the government’s management of the sector.

“If you engage the miners, they will tell you, that most of them are happy. Most of them think that when given the opportunity, the NPP government will ensure they are satisfied in the mining sector,” he stated.

“They believe we have the ideas and the practical measures to help the mining industry grow,” he added.

The deputy Lands Minister also highlighted the unprecedented efforts of the current administration, emphasizing that previous governments have not prioritized the mining industry as extensively as the current one.

He disclosed that the government is actively pursuing the establishment of a manganese refinery in the country.

“This is the only time you will see that lithium, bauxite, and manganese are getting the attention they deserve. We will even set up a manganese refinery in Ghana,” he announced.

  • Bawumia is a threat to NDC – Tolon MP

Bawumia is a threat to NDC – Tolon MP

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, has asserted that National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs are uneasy about the activities of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, prompting deliberate moves to force parliamentary adjournments due to insufficient quorum.

Speaking on GHOne TV’s State of Affairs with Lantam Papanko, the lawmaker revealed that the adjournment strategy was a direct response to concerns over Dr. Bawumia‘s extensive campaigning in their constituencies.

“They have said we were in their constituency campaigning. They are fighting about the movement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. They said on the floor of Parliament that while they are sitting here doing the government business we are in their constituencies campaigning.

“So they are frightened by the movement of our flagbearer; he is a serious campaigner, the message. So they get the feedback from their constituencies,” the deputy Majority Chief Whip stated.

“So they say that ‘if we don’t have the numbers, then we adjourn’. But we will get there, we will talk to each other and get our members into the chamber, and then we will be able to do the government business.”

    Background:

The minority acted on their threat to disrupt proceedings when New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs failed to attend. At the start of business today, fewer than 50 MPs were present instead of the required 92, prompting MP for Tamale Central, Murtala Mohammed, to bring this to the Speaker’s attention.

He criticized the NPP MPs for campaigning in NDC constituencies while expecting government business to proceed.

“Lying on our numbers to have a business of government executed, for me, demonstrates a lack of seriousness. And I don’t think that we need to be giving them this opportunity. Mr Speaker, last week and the last two weeks, I raised this issue. They are in our constituencies, campaigning, yet they expect us to execute their business for them,” Mohammed Murtala.

Following warnings from Bole-Bamboi MP Yussif Sulemana and minority chief whip Governs Kwame Agbodza, the minority suspended proceedings until the Speaker intervened, eventually adjourning to reconvene on Tuesday.

What Akufo-Addo said about Trump’s assassination attempt

President Akufo-Addo has strongly denounced the recent assassination attempt targeting Donald Trump, former President of the United States and current Republican nominee for the upcoming 2024 elections.

In a statement released on social media on July 15, 2024, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that such acts of political violence have no place in any democratic society.

He also conveyed his best wishes for Trump’s recovery and prayed for his swift return to health.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, I condemn in the strongest terms the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump. Such acts of politically-motivated violence have no place in our world, and undermine the principles of democracy and peace that we all hold dear.

“We send our heartfelt best wishes to President Trump and the American people during this difficult time, and we pray for his swift and complete recovery,” parts of Akufo-Addo’s statement read.

During a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, 2024, former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt.

As he addressed a sizable crowd of supporters, gunfire erupted, sparking panic and disorder. Quick to react, Secret Service agents shielded Trump and safely removed him from the stage.

Reports indicated that Trump sustained a gunshot wound to the ear. The assailant, firing from an elevated position outside the venue, was swiftly neutralized by Secret Service agents.

Regrettably, one bystander lost their life, and two others sustained critical injuries in the chaotic incident.

Following the incident, Donald Trump was reported to be in stable condition after receiving medical treatment at a local facility.

The FBI has taken charge of the investigation, classifying the incident as an assassination attempt.

The shooter has been preliminarily identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old who fired from a rooftop adjacent to the rally venue.

Authorities are actively investigating the motives behind the attack and any possible links the shooter may have had.

Flashback: Apostle Amoako Attah’s prophecy on Trump’s assassination attempt

A prophecy by the leader of Parliament Chapel International, Apostle Francis Amoako Attah, has caused a stir on social media following an assassination attempt on former U.S. President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

In a widely shared video, Apostle Francis Amoako Attah recounts two prophetic visions involving Trump.

He claims that on September 24, 2023, he dreamt of Trump in Jerusalem and warned him about a threat to his life.

“I told him that if he does not take care, he would be assassinated by October 15,” the apostle stated in the footage.

The prophecy continued with another dream set in Ephesus, where Amoako Attah warned Trump of dangers extending into August 2024, urging him to reconsider his path.

On January 15, 2024, the apostle reiterated his prophecy, foreseeing either assassination or imprisonment for Trump.

The prophecy seemed to come true on July 13, 2024, when chaos erupted at Trump’s rally in Butler. During his speech, a shootout occurred, resulting in casualties and injuries among attendees.

Trump himself was injured, with visible blood stains, before being swiftly secured by Secret Service agents.

    NAPO’s apology wasn’t genuine – Lecturer

Former head of the Political Science Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, has cast doubt on the sincerity of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s (NAPO) apology.

“It is not sincere; the party leadership has asked you to apologise. The regional chairman of the Ashanti Region is also stoking the fire with his comments, and nobody is saying you have to apologise. You have to remain sincere. It is win at all costs for the party; they have forgotten what the truth is,” he said.

Speaking on TV3’s Newday on Monday, July 15, Dr. Baah criticized the apology as being prompted by party directives rather than genuine remorse.

“They have told lies for a long time; they do not know what truth is. How can a party make good decisions if the leaders lack wisdom? Every intention is to make money, and no wisdom is applied. Some people behave as if the country belongs to them,” he stated.

During a ceremony on July 12 to introduce him as the running mate of the NPP, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, asserted that President Akufo-Addo’s achievements surpass those of any president since independence.

His remarks were widely criticized as a political misstep, prompting him to issue an apology through a later statement in response to the backlash.

Bawumia’s plan to integrate chieftaincy into governance commendable – Konor of Manya Krobo

The Konor of Manya Krobo, Nene Sakite II, has endorsed Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s proposal to integrate traditional leadership into modern governance, describing it as a commendable initiative.

“The stability of this country depends on the stability of the chieftaincy institution,” he noted.

Expressing his hope for an NPP victory in the upcoming elections to implement the policy, he emphasized the crucial role of the chieftaincy institution in ensuring national stability.

Nene Sakite II made these remarks during a visit by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, to his palace in Manya Krobo on Monday, July 15, 2024.

Highlighting the proximity of traditional rulers to the people compared to politicians, the Chief praised Dr. Bawumia’s vision to align traditional leadership with contemporary governance practices for enhanced community development and efficient administration.

He emphasized the need to integrate traditional wisdom and cultural values into governance to promote sustainable development and inclusive decision-making processes.

Nene Sakite II expressed optimism that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s candidacy, as a royal, would contribute significantly to realizing Dr. Bawumia’s vision.

“If you work harder, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh will be the next Vice President of Ghana,” he urged the party followers.

He advised Dr. Prempeh and NPP supporters against complacency, urging them to work diligently to convey their achievements and future plans convincingly to the Ghanaian electorate.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh affirmed Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to empowering the chieftaincy institution in governance, stressing the importance of collaboration among government, religious leaders, and traditional authorities for national unity and progress.

“I know that Dr. Bawumia will not renege on his promise. In due course, the role of the chieftaincy institution will change, and traditional leaders will be asked to contribute meaningfully to the development of the nation in the era of Dr. Bawumia as President of Ghana,” he noted.

He added, “As politicians, we must understand that for the unity, stability, progress, and development of this country, government, religious leaders, and the chieftaincy institution must be coordinated effectively, build consensus to bring proper development to the people of Ghana. I say this because we work closely with the people; hence, the need for proper synergies to be built to facilitate their wellbeing.”

He underscored the historic leadership roles of chiefs and religious leaders, advocating for mutual respect and cooperation among all stakeholders to foster societal advancement.

Therefore, “as politicians, we must not attempt to raise ourselves higher and laud it over the people; instead, we must all see ourselves playing different, equally important roles to make society better.”

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has raised doubts over the ownership status of Jubilee House, the seat of Ghana’s Executive branch, amidst allegations of state capture.

In a discussion on Onua FM on July 13, 2024, he expressed concern that the government has allegedly privatized several state assets, particularly to party affiliates, casting doubt on the integrity of these national resources.

“I cannot really vouch for what truly is in the name of Ghana,” he said.

“Are you aware the Teshie shooting range is gone? The Prison Barracks is also gone under a PPP arrangement. So, I really don’t know, probably apart from Jubilee House, and even that I’m not sure. The issue of state capture is not a joke; everything is going,” he asked.

Ablakwa’s remarks coincide with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) halting the sale of a 60% stake in four of its hotels, following public outcry.

Following the cancellation of the proposed sale of a 60% stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), the organization issued a statement on July 12, 2024, announcing the termination of this controversial transaction.

“The Board and management of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) wish to inform the public that the process to divest 60% of SSNIT’s stake in the hotels has been terminated,” the board chair stated.

SSNIT emphasized its dedication to managing the Trust’s affairs responsibly, ensuring the sustainability of the Pension Scheme for pensioners and contributors alike.

I’ll stage a ‘No Debate, No Presidency’ protest if you don’t debate with Bawumia – Koku Anyidoho to Mahama

Former Deputy Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho, has vowed to organize a protest against former President John Dramani Mahama if he declines to debate Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mr Anyidoho stated that while Mahama himself has not directly addressed the debate challenge from Dr. Bawumia, associates of the former president have indicated that they do not see the need for such a debate.

He emphasized his readiness to lead a “No Debate, No Presidency” demonstration once Mahama publicly rejects the debate proposal.

He emphasized his stance in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), asserting, “For now, it is JM’s aides/cult worshipers who are saying he would not participate in any debate. I am waiting for JM himself to be bold and say to the hearing of Ghanaians that he would not participate in a debate & I will lead a massive ‘No Debate, No Presidency’ demonstration.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, during his campaign tour in Nalerigu on July 11, 2024, reiterated his call for a debate with Mahama on economic and governance issues.

Bawumia expressed confidence that he would expose the weaknesses in Mahama’s policies, particularly the 24-hour economy proposal.

“I am looking forward to a debate with John Dramani Mahama on the economy and governance, but I am afraid he is running away from a debate, and his people say he doesn’t want to debate.

He says he doesn’t want to debate because he knows that I will expose the emptiness of his policies. He says he has a 24-hour economy policy that he cannot explain; it is as empty as an empty barrel. None of his people can explain it, and they say they will be exporting lions and elephants.”

He further noted, “When we meet man-to-man, we can debate, and the country will see where our policies lie, and that is where we should go. Give the country an opportunity to listen to us, but if he chooses not to debate, I will continue to sell my policies to the people of Ghana, and you will take the decision.”

In response to criticisms from Mahama’s allies against the debate challenge, Mr Anyidoho underscored that he is awaiting Mahama’s personal stance on the matter before mobilizing the demonstration.

  • AG orders MOH to recoup GHS1.34m in failed delivery of condoms, contraceptives to medical stores

The Auditor-General is actively pursuing a driver, Joe Gyaten, who was assigned to deliver approximately three million male condoms and other contraceptives valued at GH¢1.34 million to the Regional Medical Stores (RMS) in Eastern Region.

Despite the scheduled delivery date of August 22, 2022, Gyaten failed to complete the delivery, triggering an investigation under Section 96 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016 (Act 921), which mandates accountability for losses or deficiencies in government stores or property.

In its latest report, the Auditor-General highlighted significant financial irregularities totaling over GH¢2.41 billion across various ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) in 2023.

Notably, GH¢2.06 million of these irregularities were linked to issues in stores and procurement, including the GH¢1.34 million related to the missing contraceptives.

The audit identified the discrepancy through documentation such as the Temporary Central Medical Stores Requisition and Issue Voucher No. MOH/GHS 308088, dated August 22, 2022. Subsequent investigations confirmed that the contraceptives never arrived at the RMS, raising concerns about possible misappropriation.

Consequently, the Auditor-General has instructed the Ministry of Health (MOH) to recover the GH¢1.34 million from Gyaten. Failure to comply will hold MOH officials personally liable for the debt, emphasizing the seriousness of the issue.

The MOH has referred the matter to its Health Intelligence Unit for further investigation, working closely with the Ghana Police Service’s Criminal Investigations Department to address the issue comprehensively.

My administration has built more roads than Mills/Mahama – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has asserted that his administration has surpassed the combined road infrastructure achievements of the Mills/Mahama era.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony for the dualization of the Anwiankwanta-Ahenema Kokoben Road on Monday, July 15, Akufo-Addo emphasized the scale of road development during his presidency.

“We have completed 12,830 kilometres of roads since 2017, a stark contrast to the 4,636 kilometres achieved from 2009 to 2016,” President Akufo-Addo stated, highlighting the extensive roadworks including asphalt overlays, new constructions, bridges, and ongoing interchange projects.

“The progress made sets a high standard and serves as a blueprint for what can be achieved with dedication and strategic planning. Successive governments must ensure sustained investment in infrastructure to address the road deficit and meet the evolving needs of our rapidly growing population,” the president said.

President Akufo-Addo detailed the various types of road projects undertaken in the Ashanti Region, encompassing asphalt overlays, new constructions, graveling/re-graveling, reconstructions, rehabilitations, and the construction of two bridges at Susanso-Anloga and Kokoso-Bohyen.

He also reaffirmed that contractors working on the Suame interchange project will complete the first phase by the end of 2024 and noted the commencement of work on the main interchange project.

The president reiterated his government’s commitment to the timely completion of the entire project, addressing persistent complaints from motorists.

“The Akufo-Addo government remains focused on its commitment to dualising roads in densely populated areas along our major corridors. A key initiative to demonstrate our dedication to decongesting these vital regions.

The strategic projects we are undertaking, such as the dualization of the Ofankor-Nsawam road and the Adenta road, go beyond mere infrastructure developments; they underscore the government’s commitment to addressing real-life challenges.

“Government is committed to replicate such successful initiatives along other corridors of the region such as Suame Roundabout to Tafo-Pankrono…Another important project in the region is the construction of the Suame Interchange, the project is progressing steadily.

“The overpass on the Offinso road, Anomangye-Magazine road, Abusuakurowa, as well as 15 kilometres of the road around Suame roundabout are some 40% complete. It is programmed that these overpasses will be successfully completed before the end of this year.”

Labour unions can bring national operations to a halt – Prof Agyeman-Duah warns govt

Former UN Senior Governance Advisor Prof Baffour Agyemang-Duah has voiced surprise at the government’s assumption that it could disregard the concerns of organized labour.

He emphasized that underestimating the influence of the “sleeping giant in organized labour” was startling, particularly considering the serious consequences of interfering with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) fund, which secures the future of workers.

“If organised labour wants to paralyse the whole country, they are in a position to do so. That was why I was surprised when they were defending that was undefendable and dragging their feet,” he said. on Joy News PM Express on Monday.

“SSNIT represents the future of all workers in the country because, by law, you are supposed to keep part of their salaries hoping that upon retirement, they may get some cushion to lay their head.

“So, if someone is playing with that kind of future, you can understand why workers will rise in unison to oppose it.”

Prof. Agyemang-Duah also weighed in on SSNIT’s proposal to sell 60% of its shares in four hotels, suggesting either a poor presentation of SSNIT’s case or a significant conflict of interest.

Organized labour suspended its strike on Monday, July 15, which was initially launched in protest against SSNIT’s plan to sell these shares to a private firm owned by the Food and Agriculture Minister, Bryan Acheampong.

This decision was announced by Dr. Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), during a press conference following an emergency meeting.

He mentioned that they are granting SSNIT a month to resolve all remaining pension issues or “they will decide their next steps.”

Describing the strained relationship between organized labor and SSNIT as “troubling,” Prof. Agyemang-Duah criticized the Trust for seemingly supporting a public official involved in purchasing state assets.

The head of the Kufuor Foundation pointed out that the government should have taken heed when organized labor initially protested against the sale.

“In the 70s, labour paralyzed the military regime of the time. Between 1975 to 1977, there were lots of labour agitations, leading to internal changes within the government itself.

“Since then, we know that whenever labour begins to rumble over these matters, the government begins to have no options but to capitulate.

“Perhaps, lessons must be learnt from the Kenya peaceful demonstration which rolled into something else and forced the government to swallow its own bill and go beyond that to quickly drop the cabinet,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo has guaranteed that contractors overseeing the Suame interchange project will finish its initial phase by the conclusion of 2024.

He further noted the commencement of work on the main interchange project, emphasizing his administration’s dedication to completing the entire endeavor promptly.

This commitment follows consistent grievances from motorists utilizing the route.

“The Akufo-Addo government remains focused on its commitment to dualising of roads in densely populated areas along our major corridors. A key initiative to demonstrate our dedication to decongesting these vital regions.

“The strategic projects we’re initiating such as the dualisation of the Ofankor-Nsawam road, and the Adenta road, are not merely infrastructure projects, it’s also a confirmation of the government’s approach to solving real-life challenges.

“Government is committed to replicate such successful initiatives along other corridors of the region such as Suame Roundabout to Tafo-Pankrono…Another important project in the region is the construction of the Suame Interchange, the project is progressing steadily.

The President affirmed this commitment during the groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of the dualisation of the Anhwiankwanta-Ahenema Kokoben road, spanning 20 kilometers.

“The dualisation of the Ahenema Kokoben road is part of measures to improve the conditions of the road network in the Ashanti Region. These measures are targeted at reducing travel times, lowering vehicle operating cost and improving safety.”

He instructed contractors working on the project to implement safety measures to alleviate the stress of motorists.

According to a report from EDHUB, the billboard was taken down at Mankrong Nkwanta under the direction and oversight of local town chiefs and elders.

Video footage of the incident depicts two men using a shovel and pickaxe to excavate beneath the billboard’s supports.

  • How Mahama, Asiedu Nketiah went to Court to stop Free SHS implementation – Mac Manu

How Mahama, Asiedu Nketiah went to Court to stop Free SHS implementation – Mac Manu

Former National Chair of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Mac Manu, has alleged that former President John Dramani Mahama and National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, employed various tactics to obstruct the implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program.

In an interview with TV3, Mac Manu claimed that the NDC organized multiple demonstrations aimed at derailing the NPP’s policy.

He further stated that the NDC ultimately took their grievances to the Supreme Court in an effort to block the program.

According to him, he has documentation to support his claims.

“I have evidence of him and his General Secretary, people, speaking, making demonstrations, and going to the extent of even going to the Supreme Court to stop the Free SHS from being implemented. I will not admit that Mahama initiated the Free SHS program,” he added.

The Free SHS initiative, a cornerstone policy of the NPP, was launched by President Akufo-Addo in 2017, aiming to provide free secondary education to all Ghanaian students.

The policy has been a significant point of political contention, with various parties debating its feasibility and impact.

While many Ghanaians have benefited from the policy, challenges such as funding, infrastructure, and educational quality continue to be areas of concern.

Meanwhile, in a media engagement on July 7, 2024, Mahama refuted claims that he opposed the Free SHS program.

He asserted that as the originator of the progressive Free SHS initiative, he has always supported efforts to enhance its benefits.

“I support any bill that will improve our education to make it sustainable, to afford quality education for our children. So yes, any bill that would achieve this is something that I will support,” Mahama stated.

But president Akufo-Addo has dismissed former President John Dramani Mahama’s claim that he initiated the free Senior High School (SHS) policy, labeling it as “ridiculous.”

He highlighted previous criticisms from the NDC leadership regarding the policy’s feasibility.

Speaking at the official unveiling of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer’s running mate for the 2024 elections in Kumasi on July 9, 2024, Akufo-Addo asserted that the NDC is not a credible alternative for Ghanaians.

“Today, the free Senior High School, the same people that criticized it and said all sorts of things about it, are claiming that they implemented it. We will take it like that,” Akufo-Addo said.

“We will take it like that because as God is alive, He is not asleep.”

Akufo-Addo criticized Mahama for what he sees as a reversal on the policy.

“This leader criticized us when we said we were going to implement the Free SHS policy. Now that Ghanaians have accepted the policy, he is saying he is the one who introduced Free SHS. Have you ever heard such a thing?”

He continued, “He indeed said that we are forgetful people. Will we forget this too? Today, the leader of the NDC claims he is the one who introduced Free SHS.

“If he introduced the policy, why did he criticize us when we intended to introduce it? He said if he had 2 billion cedis, he would not invest it in free education.”

  • Govt must not meddle in SSNIT Board Chair selection – Austin Gamey

Govt must not meddle in SSNIT Board Chair selection – Austin Gamey

Labour expert Austin Gamey has urged for legislative changes to curb governmental and presidential influence over the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), particularly in board appointments.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr. Gamey emphasized that SSNIT, which manages workers’ funds, should operate independently from government control.

He proposed that board members elect a chairman internally to promote effective leadership without external dominance.

Critiquing the current system, he stated, “The people should choose a chairman from among themselves who will lead meetings without being overbearing. In Ghana, our leaders often have an overbearing nature, which has been a problem for years.”

“We have experienced 57 years of retrogression. It’s time to move forward, and the transition should begin now,” Gamey emphasized. “Regardless of the party in power, the government must understand that overbearing control will no longer be tolerated, not only in SSNIT but across all sectors. We will not be treated like slaves in our own country.”

Mr. Gamey noted that the existing board comprises two presidential nominees, two representatives from the Ghana Employers Association, four from organized labour, and one from the National Pension Association.

When questioned about the need for reform involving organized labour representatives, Mr. Gamey suggested that current members of organized labour on the board could nominate successors.

He advocated for a comprehensive overhaul and the implementation of new policies to ensure the responsible management of SSNIT’s funds.

“This doesn’t mean automatically sending a secretary general to SSNIT. Organized labour should nominate individuals based on competence. For example, I was nominated to help draft the pension scheme on behalf of the Ghana National Association of Teachers, even though I was not a teacher.”

“We need to dismantle and recompose the board and increase the representation of non-government stakeholders. Government involvement should be minimal, with only two representatives. The president should not exert excessive control over SSNIT, as its funds do not belong to the government. God forbid that it will be taken as such” he concluded.

You won’t be spared if you make any wrong move ahead of December polls – NDC to NPP

An operative of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), James Agbey, has issued a stern warning to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), asserting that the NDC will not tolerate any attempts to rig the 2024 general elections.

His remarks came in response to comments made by Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi), the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, who claimed the NPP has numerous strategies to secure victory in the upcoming elections.

Speaking at the unveiling of the NPP’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, at Kumasi’s Jubilee Park on Thursday, July 9, Chairman Wontumi confidently stated,  “They can’t stop us. 2008 they delayed us. 2024 elections, NDC you cannot stop us. We are winning. Tell the NDC that we have one million ways to win 2024 elections and we are ready.”

But in a statement, James Agbey said “We are on a rescue mission to rescue Ghana from the claws of Akufo-Addo. We are ready to bring an end to this opportunistic appropriation.

“The truth is, there would be dire consequences if Wontumi and his likes make any wrong move ahead of the 2024 general elections.”

    Below is his full statement…

    For Immediate Release

    Monday, 15th July, 2024

Dare us, and you will be first to go down – NDC Operative warns Wuntumi

Over the last couple of months, we’ve been saddled with news about stalwarts of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) making claims to the effect that power won’t change hands in the 2024 elections.

These NPP elements have on several occasions in public platforms made the point that they will use every dubious means to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Just last week at an outdoring event for Bawumia’s running-mate, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Wontumi made the point that the NPP have several ways of winning the 2024 elections, and that they will win by hook or crook.

Wontumi while threatening the NDC said, “They can’t stop us. 2008 they delayed us. 2024 elections, NDC you cannot stop us. We are winning. Tell the NDC that we have one million ways to win 2024 elections and we are ready.”

As an operative, who served the party in the Greater Accra Region as Director of Security operations in 2020, and currently serving as an operative, I have done an analysis of Wontumi’s threat and deeper scrutiny of the threat reveals that the NPP intends to use the Defence Forces of Ghana to unleash violence on the Ghanaian.

In many ways, this obviously is more likely strong evidence that the NPP continue to muddy the waters or to put it more plainly deflect attention from their failures and misdemeanours.

The NPP stalwarts are talking tough because they care very little about the consequences of their actions.

I recall how the NPP in recent times was accused of breeding and arming thugs as well as fake security operatives to harass and attack Ghanaians in the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections in 2020.

We have seen how political violence has thrown the sociopolitical landscape of so many countries into total chaos.

Even in our recent past here in Ghana, we have seen how violence almost swallowed us in Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, and the ugly situation in 2020 general elections where five(5) innocent citizens lost their lives in Techiman South.

At this juncture, let me sound a note of caution to all concerned, and warn that we’re ready to use legitimate force and every means under the sun to get Wontumi and his like minds out of the way, and restore dignity and respect to the good people of Ghana.

If they have one million ways to win, we also have two million ways to bring them down.

This year’s election is totally different from the 2020 one, where Akufo-Addo was allowed to have his way.

We are on a rescue mission to rescue Ghana from the claws of Akufo-Addo. We are ready to bring an end to this opportunistic appropriation.

The truth is, there would be dire consequences if Wontumi and his likes make any wrong move ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Let it also be on record that whether the NPP like it or not, the NDC under president Mahama is surely taking over power in 2024.

For emphasis, majority of Ghanaians are insisting on the return of the NDC to government in 2024, and there’s nothing that is going to stop the momentum that’s building in that regard.

The NPP dare not connive with rogue elements in the armed forces to disrupt the 2024 polls.

As a longstanding Operative for the NDC, I can boldly speak of our experiences and know-how, and our resilience to wade off any NPP undemocratic tendencies.

The truth is, there would be dire consequences if the Nitiwul and his likes make any wrong move ahead of the 2024 general elections. In fact, Nitiwul will be first to go down if he dare orchestrate election rigging and violence in the forthcoming general election.

Some of us are ready and willing to defend our democracy. We are ready to face off with the NPP in the event that they use the armed forces to destabilise 2024 elections.

We know Wontumi’s antics. He is clearly beating the war drum, and he should be ready to dance to the tune of his own music.

The NPP must not dare us.

    Signed:
    James Agbey (NDC OPERATIVE)

Police detain 13 for encroaching on Teshie Military shooting range land

Thirteen individuals have been taken into police custody on accusations of filling and illegally developing portions of the Laboma and Teshie Military shooting range near the Kpeshie Lagoon in La Dade-Kotopon, Greater Accra Region.

During an inspection of the site by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), extensive sections of the Kpeshie Lagoon were discovered filled for development, with structures at various stages of construction.

Chairman of the Accra REGSEC, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus-Glover, addressing reporters, assured that unauthorized structures would be demolished in the coming days.

“They were picked up because we wanted to get the right people who own these structures. Some are ordinary workers; when you ask them, they will tell you that they were sent here to work.

“So, as we have picked them, they are in the hands of the police, and they will go through the process, and whoever asked them to come and work should be able to produce them. When they do, they will be given bail, and then the law will take its course,” he stated.

“This one is closer to the Kpeshie; we will pull it down. There is another on your left, and they are building at the edge of the Kpeshie, and we will pull that one down too. At the far end, close to the shooting range, it will also be pulled down.

“We invite everybody to come, and we want to know who sold the land to the people. Because my traditional leaders are telling me they have not sold the land to anybody.

“They only told them that they wanted wooden structures, not permanent structures. So, they should tell us who sold the land to them. ,” he added.

  • NDC Chairman, allegedly assaults Women’s Organizer

NDC Chairman, allegedly assaults Women’s Organizer

The Greater Accra branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is allegedly in turmoil, with party executives locked in a fierce battle for supremacy.

The main opposition party is grappling with internal conflicts that threaten its electoral prospects in the region.

Tensions peaked during a Regional Executive meeting on July 4, 2024, at the party’s Regional Office in La, where a physical altercation occurred between Regional Chairman Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore and Regional Women’s Organizer Felicia Mekpoi Bortey.

According to The Custodian, the conflict began when the regional chairman refused to let the regional women’s organizer address issues related to the distribution of motorbikes in the Sege Constituency. This led to personal attacks, with both parties hurling insults at each other.

The situation escalated when Chairman Moore made disparaging remarks about Ms. Bortey’s character, including accusations of promiscuity. In a fit of rage, Ms. Bortey responded by pouring hot water on Ashie Moore.

This prompted Mr Moore to attempt to physically assault Madam Bortey, but other regional executives quickly intervened to prevent further violence.

Efforts by a team led by former Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr. Sylvester Mensah, to mediate were unsuccessful. A video surfaced showing Chairman Moore dismissing the team in a harsh manner.

The Custodian learned that this incident is symptomatic of deeper issues within the Greater Accra NDC. Sources within the party indicate that factionalism and petty infighting have plagued the regional branch for some time.

“I have never seen the region in disunity like Greater Accra. Nothing happens here without arguments or confrontation. We have not learned any lesson from what happened in Central Region NDC. We have about four different factions in one region, and why should that be so?” a regional executive, name withheld told this paper.

He added that, “With the general election only five months away, the internal strife within the Greater Accra NDC could severely impact the party’s performance. I am worried that the ongoing disunity might derail the party’s efforts in the crucial Greater Accra Region, a key battleground for the upcoming elections.”

With the general election only five months away, the ongoing internal strife within the Greater Accra NDC could severely impact the party’s performance. The regional executive expressed concern that the disunity might derail the party’s efforts in this crucial battleground region.

This turmoil is not unprecedented. Last year, Greater Accra Regional Chairman Ashie Moore revoked the suspension of Ayawaso-West-Wuogon Constituency Chairman Bismark Aborbi-Ayitey, against the wishes of some party executives. Aborbi-Ayitey had been suspended by the Greater Accra Regional Secretary, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, for participating in media programs discussing internal party matters. Tetteh Chaie referred the matter to the Regional Disciplinary Committee for further investigation and asked Aborbi-Ayitey to hand over all party properties in his possession.

However, Chairman Moore intervened, canceling the suspension on the grounds that it had not followed the proper procedure to secure his endorsement as Regional Chairman.

Organised Labour to meet today over intended nationwide strike

Organised Labour is set to convene an emergency meeting today to determine the next steps for the nationwide strike, following significant developments subsequent to the group’s declaration of industrial action last Friday.

Among the critical issues slated for discussion at today’s meeting is the fate of the management and Board of Directors of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), concerning their alleged roles in the halted sale of its hotels.

Last Friday, SSNIT announced the termination of a bid to sell 60% of its stake in four hotels, mere hours after the potential investor, Rock City Hotel, formally withdrew its proposal.

Sources within Organised Labour informed the Daily Graphic that the strike remains in effect, with today’s 10 a.m. meeting expected to provide further guidance on the group’s course of action in light of recent developments.

The industrial action has garnered support from affiliated labour unions, each issuing statements directing their members to fully comply with the strike.

Notable supporters include the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG), the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), and various teacher unions such as the Ghana National Association of Teachers and the National Association of Graduate Teachers.

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has taken a proactive stance, calling for the dissolution of the SSNIT Board and the resignation of top management, citing concerns over governance and public trust.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Dr Eliasu Mumuni, National Secretary of UTAG, emphasized that their advocacy for change within SSNIT is driven by the need for prudent and transparent management of pension funds and assets, highlighting the broader implications beyond political considerations.

Organised Labour initiated the industrial action following an emergency meeting at the Hall of Trade Unions in Accra last Friday. Dr Anthony Yaw Baah, Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), officially announced the strike during a press conference, emphasizing its continuation until SSNIT terminates the sale process of its shares in four prominent hotels across Ghana.

We will strike until SSNIT’s board undergoes dissolution – Organised Labour

Organised Labour has stood firm despite appeals to cancel its planned strike starting today, Monday, July 15.

The strike is in protest of the sale of a 60 percent stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the transaction, Organised Labour announced an indefinite strike starting July 15 if the process wasn’t stopped. SSNIT subsequently terminated the transaction on Friday, July 12, following intense pressure from other worker unions.

Speaking to Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, Kenneth Koomson, Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, emphasized the historical role of Ghanaian workers in the country’s independence.

“Ghana’s independence wouldn’t have been possible without the involvement of workers and politicians should know that. The unity displayed on July 12 is just the tip of the iceberg, and going forward, Organised Labour is going to ensure that the ordinary Ghanaian is well taken care of.

“SSNIT’s function is to ensure social security for the population and so the leadership [of Organised Labour] recognised that the way by which the hotels were being sold was flawed and if you look at the content of the letter, we said we were not going to call off the strike until SSNIT board is dissolved.

He disclosed plans for an emergency meeting on Monday to review SSNIT’s response and announce their decision.

“We thought that it was important to assemble today to review the letter that has been written by SSNIT and then take a decision and so today will be a day to communicate to the public where we stand today and an announcement will be made afterwards.”

They want to kill me – Last message of 17-year-old missing Ghanaian girl

The family of 17-year-old Dede Anyaku, missing for nearly three weeks, has urged police to accelerate their investigation into her disappearance.

According to her guardian, Alberta Morton, Dede was last seen on June 28 entering an Uber headed for China Mall in Amasaman but never arrived.

The Uber driver claimed to have dropped her off at Accra Mall instead.

Alberta Morton recounted her last conversation with Dede, revealing that a woman named Joana answered and later Dede messaged her sister, claiming she had been kidnapped and faced threats of harm.

Seeking public and police assistance to locate Dede, Alberta Morton described the anguish of uncertainty at home, now somewhat calmer after earlier distress.

“The last time I spoke to her, it was a woman who answered the call, her name is Joana. I told her to bring my daughter home safely to me, but all in vain. Later, she sent messages to her sister’s phone that she had been kidnapped and that they have threatened to kill her,” she stated.

Ghana faces a crisis of missing persons, with 610 cases reported since 2021, according to Missing Ghana.

Recent incidents, such as the tragic discovery of two missing children’s bodies in Tamale, highlight the severity of the issue.

The disappearance of political figure Paulina Lamisi on July 12 has also sparked widespread concern and demands for urgent action from communities and authorities alike.

Competent SSNIT Board deserves to stay – Osafo-Maafo replies critics

The Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, has staunchly defended the tenure of the company’s board members and management amidst growing calls for their resignation.

Mr Osafo-Maafo asserted that the current board members and management have demonstrated sufficient accomplishments to justify their continued leadership roles.

In response to demands from Organised Labour and other stakeholders for the board’s dissolution following the cancellation of a proposed 60 percent stake sale in SSNIT-owned hotels to Rock City Hotel, Osafo-Maafo affirmed their competence and commitment.

He pointed to various initiatives and achievements undertaken by SSNIT since 2017 as evidence of their effective stewardship.

Mr Osafo-Maafo highlighted operational improvements, enhanced efficiency, and successful resolution of inherited challenges as key achievements under his tenure.

“Let me make another point that is worth stressing and that is what the board and management of SSNIT have achieved since I have been there since 2017 and I can speak to the track record and changes that have been put in place.

“When we look at the operational improvements that have been brought in, the efficiency of the SSNIT’s operation has been much better. If you look at the legacy issues and the magnitude of what we inherited, we have resolved them positively.

“The contracts that SSNIT went in to do real estate as far back as 2016 involved an investment of $185 million and we are in the process of disposing of approximately 20 percent of those real estate assets and we are continuing to do that. In cost-saving measures, the saving alone that we made on the Westhills Ridge project is $30 million.”

“I can go through other real estate investments that began a few years ago and we have just completed the largest affordable housing project in the country in Kumasi.

“We have also put in a set of investments that will outlive me to put the Trust in the best position,” Mr. Osafo-Maafo told the host, Bernard Avle of the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, July 15.

We will work closely with Organised Labour to enhance our operations – SSNIT Boss

The Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, has committed to ongoing dialogue with Organised Labour and other stakeholders to enhance the Trust’s operations and investment strategies.

Osafo-Maafo emphasized SSNIT’s continued improvement and its dedication to sustaining this momentum through extensive engagement efforts.

His remarks directly responded to Organised Labour’s initiation of an industrial strike starting today [July 15], in protest against SSNIT’s sale of a 60 percent stake in four hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.

Following a press conference on Friday, July 12, where Organised Labour announced an indefinite strike to oppose the transactions, SSNIT subsequently issued a notice terminating the sale amidst withdrawal threats from other unions and associations.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show, Mr. Osafo-Maafo reassured Organised Labour of SSNIT’s commitment to continuous engagement with all relevant stakeholders.

“My message is very straightforward, the management and board of the Trust will continue to manage the portfolio and assets to achieve the best long-term returns. Organised Labour will be aware that we have improved and we will continue to engage and improve.”

Despite the termination of the sale process, Organised Labour affirmed its intent to sustain the strike until SSNIT’s board is dissolved.

“SSNIT’s function is to ensure social security for the population and so the leadership [of Organised Labour] recognised that the way by which the hotels were being sold was flawed and if you look at the content of the letter, we said we were not going to call off the strike until SSNIT board is dissolved,” the Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Kenneth Koomson told Bernard Avle on Monday.

  • Flashback: My father and Bawumia’s father were quite close friends – Mahama

Flashback: My father and Bawumia’s father were quite close friends – Mahama

An old video featuring former President, John Dramani Mahama discussing his familial ties with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has recently emerged on social media.

Back in 2008, John Evans Atta Mills, the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), chose John Dramani Mahama, then the Member of Parliament for Bole Constituency, as his running mate.

During the same period, Akufo-Addo, the leader of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), selected Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate for the general election.

In this video, Mahama recounts the coincidental nature of their political careers and familial connections, noting the uncanny similarities that have marked Ghana’s political landscape.

He went on to describe how their fathers were neighbors, living in the same area in Tamale and often visiting each other’s homes.

“Actually, the coincidence in our politics has been very uncanny. Because my father and Dr. Bawumia’s father were quite close friends in the CPP together, and they kind of followed a certain or the same track; they got educated about the same time together [at Tamale Secondary School], my father became Regional Minister for the Northern Region after Mumuni Bawumia became Regional Minister for the Northern Region. They all had large families; I think they both had the same number of children.

“I think Mumuni Bawumia had 19 children; my dad too had 19 children,” he stated.

He went on to describe how their fathers were neighbors, living in the same area in Tamale and often visiting each other’s homes.

“There were many parallels between their lives; they were close friends and neighbors, living in the same vicinity in Tamale,” Mahama added.

Reflecting on his relationship with Dr. Bawumia, Mahama noted that while he was closer in age to Dr. Bawumia’s elder brothers, their families were well-acquainted.

“We grew up together, myself and Mahamudu. He was younger than me, and so his elder brothers were closer to me than he was. But we knew each other; the families knew each other very well,” John Mahama said.

Mahama also highlighted the influence of his late father, who served as his mentor and chief advisor, shaping his political journey. He credited his brothers with playing a role in his entry into parliament.

In the 2008 elections, the Mills-Mahama ticket triumphed over the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia ticket.

Following the death of Prof. Mills ahead of the 2012 election, Mahama, who succeeded him, went on to win the general election against the same Akufo-Addo-Bawumia pair.

However, in 2016, the tables turned, with Nana Addo and Dr. Bawumia defeating Mahama, who had then partnered with the late Amissah Arthur as his vice-presidential candidate.

Mahama was unsuccessful in regaining power in the 2020 general elections, running with Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his vice-presidential candidate.

Looking ahead to the 2024 election, Mahama, the NDC’s flagbearer, has once again partnered with Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, facing an NPP ticket led by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who has succeeded Nana Akufo-Addo as the party’s flagbearer.

My wife left our two-year-old baby with someone for prostitution – Policeman shares

Yeboah, a member of the Ghana Police Service’s night patrol team, has opened up about a distressing incident during which he discovered his wife among prostitutes while on duty.

Compounding this revelation is an HIV diagnosis that has left him grappling with suicidal thoughts, prompting him to seek solace through counseling with Pastor Prince Elisha Osei Kofi.

Married for over six years and with a two-year-old child, Yeboah often found himself away from home at night due to his job responsibilities.

On one such night, responding to complaints about disturbances caused by prostitutes in a neighborhood, he was shocked to find his wife among those detained by his team.

He recounted, “I have been married for more than six years, and I have a two-year-old baby. I am a police officer with the night patrol team. One day, we received a call from our boss that someone had complained about prostitutes disturbing behind his house, so, we were asked to go and arrest them.

“When we got there, I saw one lady, and I got frightened, but upon getting closer, I realized that she was my wife. I had left her at home before I went to work, and the things she was wearing, in fact, she was almost naked,” he explained.

He continued, “So, we arrested all of them and took them to the station. But upon leaving them there, I couldn’t control myself, so I was rushed to the hospital. I didn’t allow my colleagues to know that my wife was part of the group.

“I was released around 4:00 a.m. and went home. In the morning, around 8 a.m., she came home, and I asked her about our child. She said she had left him in the care of the next-door neighbour, so I went to get the child,” he narrated.

He had been preparing for an international assignment that necessitated a medical examination.

However, his plans were derailed when the examination revealed he had contracted HIV, which he believes he got from his wife.

“When I asked her, she questioned me that how much money do I give to her to feed herself and our child. I told her I would go back to her family and report her, but she said I should go ahead.

“Unfortunately, I had to travel abroad, and when I went for my medicals for the travel, I realized I have HIV/AIDS now.

“At that time, I felt like shooting myself to death. What I am going through is unbearable, and I need a counsellor; that is why I am here,” he explained.

Yeboah also mentioned that his wife eventually packed up and left with their child.

Decision to terminate sale of hotels was borne of Organised Labour’s objection – SSNIT

Director-General of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Kofi Bosompem Osafo-Maafo, revealed that the decision to halt the sale of a 60 percent stake in four SSNIT-owned hotels to Rock City Hotel was driven by objections from Organised Labour.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show with host Bernard Avle, Mr. Osafo-Maafo emphasized that a key aspect of the transaction was extensive consultation with stakeholders. Management responded to various objections by terminating the deal.

“We listened to the objections from the stakeholders and we decided to terminate the process. If you remember, when we had the press conference, we said we would engage all the stakeholders and we have been doing that since then. The unions have also been vociferous and we listened to their demands and decided to terminate the process.”

“My team and I met with the unions and the Labour and Employment Minister and we had two engagements with the NPRA, so there has been continuous engagement and where we are now, we are all seeking the same objective, which is to improve the revenue of the hotels.”

Mr. Osafo-Maafo clarified that the initiative to divest SSNIT’s shares in the hotels predates his tenure, dating back to 2010.

“We don’t think that we left it too late, there were businesses that we have had since 2010.

This process started as far back as 2010, when the board invited in investors and then in 2017 and then in 2018 the board directed that we go in to find strategic investors and the process traveled through to 2022.”

Assassination attempts on U.S. Presidents: From Lincoln to Trump

From as early as the 19th century, there have been numerous assassination attempts and plots targeting presidents of the United States of America, a trend that continues to this day.

Donald Trump, the former president of the US, became the latest victim of such attempts on Saturday, July 13, 2024. He narrowly escaped death when a bullet grazed his right ear while delivering a speech at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Reports indicate that the former president is now out of danger, thanks in part to the swift actions of the Secret Service in apprehending the shooter.

Conversations have already begun regarding gun ownership in a nation where the constitution guarantees citizens the right to bear arms.

In response to the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, this report explores the extensive history of such incidents involving US presidents dating back to the 19th century.

The following excerpt is drawn from the Wikipedia page titled “List of United States presidential assassination attempts and plots.”

    Presidents assassinated

    Abraham Lincoln

The assassination of Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, occurred on Good Friday, April 14, 1865, at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., around 10:15 PM. The assassin, John Wilkes Booth, a well-known actor and Confederate sympathizer from Maryland, planned initially to kidnap Lincoln but later decided to assassinate him after attending one of Lincoln’s speeches on April 11, 1865, advocating for voting rights for Black people.

Booth and his co-conspirators planned to attack Lincoln at Ford’s Theatre, as well as Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William H. Seward at their homes.

On the night of April 14, Lincoln attended the play “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theatre with his wife Mary and guests Major Henry Rathbone and Clara Harris. Booth entered the president’s state box and shot Lincoln with a .44-caliber Derringer pistol, fatally injuring him.

Despite a brief struggle in which Booth stabbed Major Rathbone, Booth managed to escape. Lincoln, unconscious, was quickly taken to the Petersen House across the street. Despite the efforts of doctors, Lincoln succumbed to his injuries at 7:22 AM on April 15, 1865, after remaining in a coma for nine hours.

As Abraham Lincoln passed away, accounts describe his breathing growing quieter and his face becoming serene. According to some reports, as he drew his last breath the morning after the assassination, he even smiled broadly before peacefully expiring. Historians, like author Lee Davis, have highlighted Lincoln’s tranquil demeanor at the moment of his death, noting it was a rare peaceful expression after years of turmoil.

Eyewitnesses, such as journalist Noah Brooks, observed that Lincoln’s passing was devoid of suffering or struggle, describing it as a gentle cessation of breathing. John Hay, Lincoln’s secretary, remarked on the peacefulness that settled upon Lincoln’s features.

Despite the tragic loss of Lincoln, the broader conspiracy failed in its goals: Secretary of State William H. Seward survived his wounds, and Vice President Andrew Johnson was spared an attack.

John Wilkes Booth, the assassin, evaded capture for twelve days before Union soldiers found him on April 26, 1865, at a farm in Virginia.

Refusing to surrender, Booth was fatally shot by Union cavalryman Boston Corbett. Additionally, four other conspirators involved in the plot were later hanged for their roles.

    James A. Garfield

The assassination of James A. Garfield, the 20th president of the United States, unfolded at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, D.C., on July 2, 1881, less than four months into his presidency. As Garfield arrived at the station, Charles J. Guiteau, a writer and lawyer, fired two shots from a .442 Webley British Bull Dog revolver. One bullet grazed Garfield’s shoulder while the other penetrated his back.

Despite the medical care Garfield received, which included relentless probing of his wound with unsterilized instruments, he endured suffering for eleven weeks before succumbing on September 19, 1881, at 10:35 PM.

His death resulted from complications caused by iatrogenic infections.

Guiteau was promptly arrested and stood trial from November 1881 to January 1882. Found guilty, he was sentenced to death and executed by hanging on June 30, 1882, in the District of Columbia, just two days before the first anniversary of the assassination attempt.

Guiteau was assessed as mentally unstable or suffering from neurosyphilis during his trial and autopsy.

He claimed his motive for the assassination was disappointment at not being appointed Ambassador to France and believed Garfield’s election victory was due to a speech he had written in support of him.

    William McKinley

The assassination of President William McKinley occurred on September 6, 1901, at 4:07 PM, during his visit to the Pan-American Exposition at the Temple of Music in Buffalo, New York. Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist, shot McKinley twice in the abdomen at close range with a concealed .32-caliber revolver. The first bullet was deflected by a button or medal on McKinley’s jacket, lodging in his sleeve, while the second bullet pierced his stomach. Initially showing signs of recovery, McKinley’s condition deteriorated due to gangrene, leading to his death on September 14, 1901, at 2:15 AM.

James Benjamin Parker and others in the crowd subdued Czolgosz after the shooting. Despite being beaten severely following his capture, Czolgosz survived and was swiftly convicted after a brief trial where he refused to mount a defense. He was sentenced to death and executed via electric chair at Auburn Prison on October 29, 1901. Czolgosz’s motives were politically driven, although his specific goals remain unclear.

In response to McKinley’s assassination, Congress mandated that the Secret Service provide protection to the president of the United States.

    John F. Kennedy

President John F. Kennedy was assassinated at 12:30 PM on Friday, November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas, during a motorcade through Dealey Plaza. Accompanied by his wife Jacqueline, Texas Governor John Connally, and Connally’s wife Nellie, Kennedy was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald, a former U.S. Marine and American defector, from the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository. Kennedy suffered wounds to his back and head, with Governor Connally also seriously injured and a bystander, James Tague, receiving a minor facial injury from bullet fragments.

The motorcade rushed to Parkland Memorial Hospital, where President Kennedy was pronounced dead at 1:00 PM. Oswald was swiftly apprehended and charged by the Dallas Police Department not only for Kennedy’s assassination but also for the murder of Dallas policeman J. D. Tippit, who Oswald shot dead in the Oak Cliff neighborhood later that day.

On Sunday, November 24, while being transferred between jails, Oswald was fatally shot in the basement of Dallas Police Department Headquarters by Jack Ruby, a local nightclub owner.

Ruby was convicted of Oswald’s murder, but his conviction was overturned on appeal. He died in prison in 1967 while awaiting a new trial.

In September 1964, the Warren Commission concluded that Oswald acted alone in both the assassination of Kennedy and the murder of Officer Tippit, and that Ruby acted alone in killing Oswald.

Despite this official finding, public opinion polls from 1966 to 2004 revealed that up to 80% of Americans suspected there was a plot or cover-up regarding Kennedy’s assassination. Conspiracy theories surrounding the events of that day continue to persist.

    Presidents wounded

    Theodore Roosevelt

Three and a half years after leaving office, Theodore Roosevelt entered the 1912 presidential election as a candidate for the Progressive Party. While campaigning in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on October 14, 1912, Roosevelt was shot in the chest by John Schrank, a saloon-keeper from New York who had been stalking him for weeks. Fortunately, the bullet was slowed by a 50-page speech folded over twice and a metal glasses case in Roosevelt’s breast pocket, preventing it from penetrating deeply. Roosevelt, showing remarkable composure, reassured the crowd and ordered that Schrank be unharmed and taken into custody.

Despite being wounded, Roosevelt declined immediate medical attention, correctly deducing that the bullet had not reached his lung as he was not coughing blood. Instead, he delivered an 84-minute speech with blood seeping into his shirt, opening with the memorable line: “Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot, but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.” Subsequent examination showed the bullet lodged in Roosevelt’s chest muscle, where doctors decided it safer to leave it than to attempt removal.

After two weeks of recovery, Roosevelt resumed campaigning but ultimately lost the election to Democrat Woodrow Wilson. John Schrank, who claimed McKinley had appeared to him in a dream instructing him to avenge his assassination by killing Roosevelt, was found legally insane. He spent the remainder of his life institutionalized until his death in 1943.

    Ronald Reagan

On March 30, 1981, as Ronald Reagan left the Washington Hilton hotel after delivering a speech, John Hinckley Jr. attempted to assassinate him by firing six gunshots. One of the bullets ricocheted off the presidential limousine, striking Reagan in the left underarm, causing a broken rib, a punctured lung, and serious internal bleeding. Rushed to George Washington University Hospital, Reagan arrived in critical condition but was stabilized in the emergency room and underwent immediate surgery. He recovered and left the hospital on April 11. Alongside Reagan, White House press secretary James Brady, Secret Service agent Tim McCarthy, and police officer Thomas Delahanty were also injured. Brady suffered brain damage and later died in 2014, with his death ruled a homicide due to complications from his injuries.

Hinckley, arrested immediately, later confessed he had intended to impress actress Jodie Foster by killing Reagan.

Found mentally ill, he was confined to psychiatric care. Released on September 10, 2016, 35 years after the incident and 12 years after Reagan’s death from pneumonia complicated by Alzheimer’s disease, Hinckley’s release drew significant attention and debate.

    Donald Trump

On July 13, 2024, during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, former President Donald Trump sustained a gunshot wound to his upper right ear inflicted by Thomas Crooks. Despite the attack, Trump displayed resilience by briefly ducking and then rising to pump his fist amid chants of “USA” from the crowd.

He was swiftly surrounded by Secret Service personnel and evacuated to safety, later receiving medical treatment at a hospital. Trump was released in stable condition and subsequently departed for New Jersey by plane. Tragically, the shooter and one attendee lost their lives, with two others critically injured.

    Assassination attempts and plots
    Andrew Jackson

On January 30, 1835, near the Capitol Building, a house painter named Richard Lawrence attempted to assassinate President Andrew Jackson using two pistols, both of which misfired. Interestingly, later tests showed the pistols were functional. Jackson responded by striking Lawrence with his cane until he was subdued. Lawrence was later deemed not guilty by reason of insanity and spent the remainder of his life in a mental institution, passing away in 1861.

    Abraham Lincoln

In February 1861, as President-elect Abraham Lincoln traveled through Baltimore amid threats of the alleged Baltimore Plot—an attempt by Confederate sympathizers to assassinate him en route to his inauguration—his security was managed by Allan Pinkerton’s National Detective Agency. Despite debate among scholars about the plot’s validity, Lincoln and his advisors took precautions to ensure his safe passage through the city.

In August 1864, an unknown sniper narrowly missed Lincoln’s head by inches with a lone rifle shot while he traveled unguarded from the White House to the Soldiers’ Home in Washington, D.C. Lincoln continued his journey, stating to his friend and bodyguard, Ward Lamon, that “it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose.”

    William Howard Taft

In 1909, President William Howard Taft and Mexican President Porfirio Díaz planned a historic summit in El Paso, Texas, and Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua. Amid serious security concerns, including assassination threats related to the disputed Chamizal strip, a substantial security detail ensured their safety during the event.

In 1910, while visiting his aunt in Massachusetts, Taft’s family reported a stranger who allegedly overheard an assassination plot in Boston. The incident was reported to local police and the Secret Service, though the identity of the stranger was never determined.

    Herbert Hoover

During a goodwill tour of Central and South America in 1928, President-elect Herbert Hoover narrowly escaped an assassination plot by Argentine anarchists. The plotters planned to bomb his train, but were intercepted before they could carry out the attack.

    Franklin D. Roosevelt

In February 1933, Giuseppe Zangara fired shots at President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt in Miami, Florida. While Roosevelt was unharmed, Chicago Mayor Anton Cermak was fatally wounded in the attack. Zangara was executed for Cermak’s murder.

    Harry S. Truman

In November 1950, Puerto Rican pro-independence activists attempted to assassinate President Harry S. Truman at the Blair House in Washington, D.C., where he was residing during renovations at the White House. The attempt resulted in the death of one White House policeman, while Truman himself escaped unscathed.

    John F. Kennedy

In December 1960, Richard Paul Pavlick, driven by anti-Catholic sentiments, planned to assassinate President-elect John F. Kennedy in Palm Beach, Florida. Pavlick was arrested before he could carry out his plan and was later committed to a mental hospital.

    Richard Nixon

In April 1972, Arthur Bremer attempted to shoot President Richard Nixon during a motorcade in Ottawa, Canada, but was unsuccessful due to the fast-moving nature of the event. Bremer later shot and seriously wounded Governor George Wallace of Alabama.

In February 1974, Samuel Byck attempted to hijack a commercial airliner with the intention of crashing it into the White House to kill Nixon. Byck’s attempt failed, and he ultimately committed suicide during the incident.

These rewritten accounts provide a concise overview of the various assassination attempts and plots involving U.S. presidents throughout history.

    Gerald Ford

In mid-August 1974, Muharem Kurbegovic, known as The Alphabet Bomber, threatened to throw a nerve gas bomb at President Gerald Ford in Washington, D.C., just ten days into his presidency. The CIA, U.S. Secret Service, and other agencies swiftly identified and arrested Kurbegovic within a day using voice analysis and court records. His Yugoslav origins were pivotal in his identification and subsequent apprehension.

On September 5, 1975, at the northern grounds of the California State Capitol, Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, a follower of Charles Manson, aimed a Colt M1911 .45-caliber pistol at Ford. The pistol malfunctioned, as it had no cartridge in the firing chamber, and Secret Service agent Larry Buendorf swiftly apprehended her. Fromme was sentenced to life in prison and released on parole in 2009, after Ford’s death in 2006.

Just 17 days later, on September 22, 1975, in San Francisco, Sara Jane Moore fired a revolver at Ford from a distance of 40 feet (12 m). Her shot missed, hitting a building wall and slightly injuring a bystander. Oliver Sipple, another bystander, intervened and subdued Moore. She received a life sentence but was paroled in 2007, after serving over 30 years in prison.

    Jimmy Carter

On May 5, 1979, Raymond Lee Harvey was arrested by the Secret Service in Los Angeles, carrying a starter pistol with blank rounds just before President Jimmy Carter was scheduled to give a speech. Harvey claimed involvement in a plot to assassinate Carter and fired blank rounds from a hotel roof the previous night as a test. He was later released due to insufficient evidence, and charges against him and his associate, Osvaldo Espinoza Ortiz, were dropped.

    George H. W. Bush

On April 13, 1993, Kuwaiti authorities claimed to have foiled an alleged plot to assassinate former President George H. W. Bush with a car bomb during his visit to Kuwait University. Fourteen Kuwaiti and Iraqi men, suspected of working for Saddam Hussein, were arrested. The plot, believed to be directed by the Iraqi Intelligence Service, led to a cruise missile attack on an Iraqi intelligence building in Baghdad by then-President Bill Clinton. Later assessments suggested the plot might have been fabricated by Kuwaiti authorities to justify actions against Iraq.

This revision provides a concise summary of the attempted assassinations involving Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George H. W. Bush.

    Bill Clinton

January 21, 1994: Ronald Gene Barbour, a retired military officer and freelance writer, planned an assassination attempt on President Clinton while he was jogging. Barbour, who was in Florida during Clinton’s state visit to Russia, did not carry out the attack. He was later sentenced to five years in prison and released in 1998.

October 29, 1994: Francisco Martin Duran fired at least 29 shots from a semi-automatic rifle at the White House, aiming at figures he mistook for President Clinton among men in dark suits on the North Lawn. Tourists Harry Rakosky, Ken Davis, and Robert Haines subdued Duran, who had a suicide note. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

November 1994: Osama bin Laden enlisted Ramzi Yousef, known for the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, to target President Clinton. Yousef opted not to proceed, citing formidable security, and instead planned an attack on Pope John Paul II.

November 24, 1996: During the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Manila, President Clinton’s motorcade was redirected due to intercepted intelligence indicating an imminent attack. Secret Service Director Lewis Merletti ordered the change, leading to the discovery of a bomb under a bridge. U.S. investigators later linked the plot to Saudi terrorist Osama bin Laden, residing in Afghanistan at the time.

October 2018: A pipe bomb addressed to Hillary Clinton was intercepted at their home in Chappaqua, New York, during a wave of similar packages sent to Democratic leaders including Barack Obama. Bill Clinton was present in Chappaqua when the package was discovered, while Hillary was campaigning in Florida. Fingerprint DNA identified the sender as Florida resident Cesar Sayoc, who was apprehended two days later. Sayoc received a 20-year prison sentence after prosecutors sought life imprisonment.

    George W. Bush

May 10, 2005: During a speech in Freedom Square, Tbilisi, Georgia, President Bush narrowly escaped harm when Vladimir Arutyunian threw a live Soviet-made hand grenade toward the podium. The grenade’s explosion was prevented by a tightly wrapped red tartan handkerchief, which blocked the safety lever. Arutyunian was arrested in July 2005 after a subsequent incident in which he killed an Interior Ministry agent during his apprehension. He received a life sentence in January 2006.

On May 24, 2022, Shihab Ahmed Shihab Shihab, an Iraqi resident of Columbus, Ohio, was arrested for his involvement in a plot to assassinate President George W. Bush. The arrest followed conversations he had with undercover FBI informants, during which he discussed illegal immigration activities and plans to smuggle Iraqi nationals into the U.S. from Mexico to aid in the plot. Shihab also claimed connections to former ISIS members, including Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, and sought to launder money from a former ISIS financial chief into the U.S. through a car dealership in Columbus.

In February of that year, Shihab and an informant conducted surveillance on Bush’s residence in Dallas, Texas, and the George W. Bush Institute. Shihab had entered the country illegally in September 2020 using false identification. He admitted to collaborating with Iraqi terrorists during the Iraq War, targeting American servicemen from 2003 to 2006, citing anger over the conflict as motivation for the assassination plot.

    Barack Obama

December 2008: Kody Brittingham, a U.S. Marine, plotted to assassinate President-elect Obama, whom he labeled a “domestic enemy”. Found with white supremacist material, Brittingham was sentenced to 100 months in federal prison.

April 2009: A Syrian man with forged press credentials planned to assassinate Obama with a knife at an Istanbul summit. He confessed, implicating three accomplices.

November 2011: Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez fired shots at the White House due to fringe beliefs, receiving a 25-year prison sentence.

2011–2012: The far-right group FEAR plotted attacks including Obama’s assassination, foiled by arrests.

October 2012: A ricin-laced letter aimed at Obama was intercepted.

June 2013: White supremacists planned to use a homemade “radiation gun” against Obama, among others.

Trump campaign shooting: Details about the suspect, Thomas Matthew Crooks

The Pittsburgh suburb of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, is grappling with shock following the FBI’s identification of Thomas Matthew Crooks as the individual who shot at Donald Trump during a campaign rally, causing nationwide alarm.

Investigators believe Crooks, armed with an AR-style rifle, fired at the former president while he addressed a crowd in Butler, Pennsylvania, resulting in the death of one audience member and critical injuries to two others.

The 20-year-old kitchen worker was promptly neutralized at the scene by a Secret Service sniper, according to officials.

In his quiet and affluent hometown, neighbors are struggling to comprehend how a seemingly quiet young man could be implicated in such a violent act.

The FBI has confirmed Crooks’ involvement in the assassination attempt on the former president and is actively investigating the incident. Due to the absence of identification, investigators used DNA to ascertain his identity.

Crooks hailed from Bethel Park, approximately 43 miles from the site of the attempted assassination, and graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022, where he was recognized for his achievements in mathematics and science.

He worked at a local nursing home kitchen near his residence, according to reports.

Public records indicate Crooks was a registered Republican, although he reportedly made a donation to the liberal campaign group ActBlue in 2021.

Reports indicate Crooks was wearing a T-shirt from Demolition Ranch, a popular YouTube channel known for its firearms and demolition content.

Law enforcement officials believe the weapon used in the shooting was purchased by Crooks’ father, as reported by the Associated Press.

Following the incident, law enforcement discovered suspicious devices in Crooks’ vehicle, prompting a bomb investigation at his residence, according to CBS.

“We do not currently have an identified motive,” said Kevin Rojek, FBI Pittsburgh special agent in charge, at a briefing on Saturday night.

Authorities continue to investigate Crooks’ motive, with no clear motive identified thus far, according to FBI Pittsburgh special agent in charge Kevin Rojek.

Crooks’ father, Matthew Crooks, expressed bewilderment and stated he would wait to speak with law enforcement before commenting further.

“what the hell is going on” but would “wait until I talk to law enforcement” before speaking about his son.

According to CBS News, police cordoned off the road leading to Crooks’s parental home.

A neighbor informed CBS that officers evacuated her in the middle of the night without prior notice.

Bethel Park Police have initiated a bomb investigation centered around Crooks’s residence, leading to strict control of the area with police vehicles blocking access. Only residents are permitted entry or exit.

According to sources from law enforcement speaking to CBS, there is a belief that some level of planning occurred prior to the shooting. The extent of this planning remains under active investigation.

Authorities maintain the belief that Crooks acted alone but are ongoing in their investigation into whether he had any companions at the rally.

    Who was Thomas Matthew Crooks?

Thus far, a complex and occasionally contradictory portrayal of Crooks has emerged.

According to interviews with local news outlet KDKA, some former classmates described him as a loner who faced bullying and occasionally wore “hunting outfits” to school.

However, Summer Barkley, another former classmate, presented a contrasting view to the BBC, highlighting his academic excellence and deep passion for history, noting that he consistently performed well on tests.

“always getting good grades on tests” and was “very passionate about history”.

“Anything on government and history he seemed to know about,” he said. “But it was nothing out of the ordinary….he was always nice.”
Others simply remembered him as quiet.

“He was there but I can’t think of anyone who knew him well,” one former classmate, who asked to remain nameless, told the BBC. “He’s just not a guy I really think about. But he seemed fine.

Jameson Myers, a former member of the Bethel Park High School varsity rifle team who graduated alongside Crooks in 2022, told CBS that he did not make the team.

“He did not even make the junior varsity team after trying out,” Mr Myers added.

“He never returned to try-outs for the remainder of high school.”

Mr Myers remembers Crooks as seemingly a “normal boy” who was “not particularly popular but never got picked on or anything.”

“He was a nice kid who never talked poorly of anyone and I never have thought him capable of anything I’ve seen him do in the last few days.”
Other community members said simply that they were shocked that the alleged perpetrator of the shooting could have come from the quiet, green streets of Bethel Park.

Jason Mackey, a 27-year-old local resident who lives near the Crooks’ home and worked at his school, expressed disbelief despite not knowing Crooks personally.

“It’s shocking. You never expect something like this to happen so close to home,” Mackey said. “It’s just a surreal situation.”

As for casualties, one person was killed and two others were injured during the shooting at the campaign rally, according to CBS News. All three victims were adult men who were part of the audience.

At a press conference, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro identified the deceased as Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old volunteer fire chief who heroically shielded his family during the attack.

A GoFundMe page, initiated by the Trump campaign’s national finance director Meredith O’Rourke, has raised over $340,000 (£267,000) to support the injured victims’ families.

In a social media post on his Truth Social platform, Donald Trump described being hit by a bullet that grazed his right ear, causing him to feel the bullet “ripping through the skin.” Blood was visible on his ear and face as security personnel swiftly moved him to safety.

Trump’s statement on the Republican National Committee (RNC) website indicates that he is recovering well and appreciative of law enforcement’s swift response.

Regarding the shooting incident itself, eyewitnesses reported seeing a man, believed to be Crooks, on a nearby rooftop with a rifle before the shooting occurred.

Video footage obtained by TMZ captured the moment the shooting began, showing the assailant using an AR-style rifle.

How far was the suspected gunman from Donald Trump?

Law enforcement sources informed CBS that the gunman was initially flagged as suspicious by a bystander and police, though officers lost track of him before the shooting began.

The FBI, however, has not yet confirmed details about the type of firearm used or the number of shots fired.

Ultimately, a Secret Service sniper returned fire and neutralized the gunman, with subsequent footage showing law enforcement approaching the gunman’s body on the rooftop.

CDS, military secretary to testify in ambulance case over Jakpa’s dismissal from GAF

The Chief of Defense Staff, Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, and the Military Secretary are scheduled to testify later this week in the ongoing ambulance trial.

These military leaders will address documents submitted by the prosecution, which allege that Richard Jakpa was dismissed from the military in 2007 due to unsatisfactory performance and failure to pass promotional exams.

Lawyers for Richard Jakpa argue that these documents aim to discredit their client, who testified in his defense in the criminal trial involving Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

As a result, Jakpa’s lawyers have issued subpoenas to ensure the military officials’ attendance.

Dr. Ato Forson, Richard Jakpa, and the Chief of the Ministry of Health are on trial for allegedly causing a financial loss of €2.37 million to the state through a contract to purchase 200 ambulances for the Ministry of Health, among other charges.

Court documents reveal that the ambulances are actually ordinary buses that lack the necessary equipment to function as proper ambulances.

I missed NAPO’s unveiling because I was working on a report for Bawumia – Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu

The Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has explained the absence of key New Patriotic Party (NPP) figures from the event unveiling Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh(NAPO), as the party’s running mate in Kumasi.

In a recent interview shared on YouTube, Mensah-Bonsu clarified that his absence, along with that of the Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu (Joe Wise), was due to their commitments to parliamentary and party responsibilities.

Mensah-Bonsu revealed that NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia tasked him with drafting the party’s manifesto for the 2024 elections.

This role required him to be engaged in intensive work sessions, including a crucial meeting the day before the unveiling ceremony.

“The work that the vice president tasked me with as the manifesto committee head required me to work with the team to draft the report for him. We worked on Monday, the day before the unveiling.

“We had other discussions that we needed to include in the manifesto, so we had to stay and work on those things because Bawumia needed such information for his regional tours a few days after the event.

“I have already informed my younger brother, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, about why I couldn’t go,” he said.

Mensah-Bonsu stated that he had informed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh about his inability to attend the event.

He also mentioned that Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, was engaged in parliamentary duties, specifically related to the National Service Authority Bill, where his presence was crucial as the sponsoring minister.

“I was in the office working during the time my younger brother NAPO was being unveiled. I was in the office working when they called from parliament, asking me to come help with the National Service Authority bill.

“So, I went to parliament and met former mayor Osei Assibey, who is the chief executive at the National Service Secretariat. He told me they had a problem with the bill, and Hon. Osei Owusu had told him to call me to come and help.

“The sponsoring minister for the national service is Adutwum, so he was also supposed to be in parliament as the Minister of Education. Bagbin was also occupied with other matters, so he had summoned Osei Owusu to sit in for the proceedings. When I arrived, I realized Osei Owusu was the one presiding,” he asserted.

Mr Mensah-Bonsu further noted that the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for Bekwai Constituency, Joseph Osei Owusu, was also engaged in parliamentary proceedings, presiding over the session due to other commitments of Speaker Bagbin.

“We sat and worked on the bill, and even when I wanted to visit the washroom, Osei Assibey thought I was running away and had to follow me.

“Adutwum had to be there because of the national service bill, and Osei Owusu was also presiding that day, which is why he couldn’t go. I haven’t asked them yet, but based on what I saw, this is why I am saying this,” he added.

NAPO was unveiled as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate on June 9, 2024, in Kumasi.

  • Flashback: Bawumia and I grew up together – Mahama

Flashback: Bawumia and I grew up together – Mahama

An old video featuring former President John Dramani Mahama discussing his familial ties with Vice President Dr.

  • There’s no need to debate with Mahama over the economy you have crashed – NDC to Bawumia

There’s no need to debate with Mahama over the economy you have crashed – NDC to Bawumia

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, spokesperson for the John Mahama Campaign Team, reiterated her stance that a pre-election debate between the NDC flagbearer and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, is unnecessary.

Despite calls from political analysts and stakeholders, Bawah Mogtari dismissed the idea of a debate between the two primary contenders.

On Saturday, July 13, Bawah Mogtari posted on X (formerly Twitter) that there is no longer any need for a debate, pointing to the country’s economic challenges. She encouraged voters to make informed decisions in the 2024 elections.

“My Dear Brothers and Sisters, what really is there to debate about, there is absolutely nothing left to debate. The economy has crashed and the country broke. “We dey for gutter inside”. A steering wheel without a car can’t get anyone anywhere. Let’s vote wisely, choose experience.”

In an earlier interview on The Point of View on Channel One TV, Bawah Mogtari expressed her reservations about a debate between the two main candidates. While acknowledging Mahama’s energy and extensive knowledge, she was hesitant to accept a debate invitation.

I lost Tema East in 2020 because party members did not support me – Titus Glover

Greater Accra Regional Minister, Titus Glover, has revealed that he faced internal sabotage from party members in the Tema East constituency during the 2020 elections, which led to his defeat.

According to the former MP, lack of support from party members undermined his campaign efforts, resulting in his loss to the NDC.

“I lost Tema East because my people did not support me, they sabotaged my campaign resulting in my defeat to the NDC.”

Speaking at the campaign launch of Jefferson Kwamena Sackey for Ablekuma Central, Glover emphasized the need to eliminate divisive politics within the NPP as they gear up for the upcoming December elections.

“We should eschew all forms of division as we prepare for the polls, we can’t be divided going into the election so let’s remain united”.

Jefferson Sackey aims to challenge the NDC’s Dan Abdul-Latif for the seat in December.

  • Date for 2024 presidential debate to soon be disclosed – IEA

Date for 2024 presidential debate to soon be disclosed – IEA

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has emphasized the necessity of holding a debate before the 2024 elections, involving key political parties planning to participate.

IEA argues that such debates are essential for voters to evaluate both presidential and vice-presidential candidates, thereby making informed choices.

This position by IEA comes amid evident disagreements between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the importance of debates.

A senior fellow at IEA, Professor Alexander Bilson Darku, revealed in an interview with Citi News that discussions have begun with various political parties to arrange a debate before December 7.

Let me make this very clear from the beginning. The need for debate is the right of the people. The people of Ghana ought to know what their presidential candidate, and for that matter, the party they represent, have in stock for them and so we are at a very early stage now talking to them [the political parties].

“We have our timetable and very soon it will be known to the public as to the programme that the IEA has outlined to make this all-important presidential debate come on. I don’t think we should go into the specifics, but I am telling you we will have it at a very good time that would be beneficial to the parties involved and the timing that would be beneficial for the nation.”

Professor Alexander Bilson Darku further mentioned that the participating parties and their candidates will be carefully selected and streamlined.

“We are using the Afrobarometer criteria. It has established a threshold, and we will use that threshold to invite the parties that meet the threshold to participate in the debate.

“This might be four or five parties, and their presidential candidates and vice presidential candidates will be invited to participate in the debate.”

  • You claim Akufo-Addo is the best president yet Ghana is in a mess – Lecturer to NAPO

You claim Akufo-Addo is the best president yet Ghana is in a mess – Lecturer to NAPO

Former head of the Political Science Department at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, has criticized Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, for his recent statements comparing the legacies of President Akufo-Addo and Ghana’s first president, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During his unveiling event in Kumasi on July 9, 2024, NAPO claimed that President Akufo-Addo had outshone Dr. Nkrumah in terms of achievements.

“Since independence in 1957, we’ve not had any president who has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. From 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”

Dr. Amoako Baah condemned these remarks, labeling them disrespectful and lacking factual basis.

In an interview on Onua FM on July 11, 2024, Dr. Amoako Baah stressed that even President Akufo-Addo himself would disagree with NAPO’s assertion, stating, “Anybody who says that what NAPO said is good is a liar because this is called an unforced error”.

“It is a flawed judgment. You have become a minister for eight years to gain experience, so you can thank Nana Akufo-Addo for allowing you to serve and gain experience.

“But you can’t say he has performed better than Nkrumah because of what he did for you. Even Akufo-Addo himself won’t agree with what you are saying. He will never agree that he has performed better than Nkrumah”.

Dr. Baah expressed frustration over the country’s current economic challenges, criticizing NAPO for diverting attention away from pressing issues with unfounded comparisons.

He pointedly remarked, “Instead of addressing how to solve our problems, NAPO is engaging in baseless claims. His statement simply does not hold true.”

Meanwhile, NAPO has issued an apology for his comments comparing the achievements of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah to those of President Akufo-Addo, clarifying that his remarks were personal opinions and expressing regret for any discomfort caused.

“The country is drowning in debt, and you are there saying this nonsense. Talk about how you will solve problems; that is what we want to hear about; what he is saying is not true, so he shouldn’t have said it. Does he have eyes different from what I have and those of Ghanaians?” he said.

“If he has done well, why is the country suffering? He should explain. Does he live in a different country? Best president, and they have stolen all the money, best president, and we are suffering,” he added.

NAPO’s remarks have triggered widespread criticism, prompting calls from the Convention People’s Party (CPP) for his resignation due to the controversy they have ignited.

150 police officers trained to protect assets of mining companies

Personnel of the Ghana Police Service assigned to mining companies have received a directive to uphold professionalism and adhere to the Service’s code of ethics while performing their duties.

Chief Director of Analysis, Research, and Finance at the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Christopher Opoku Nyarko, emphasized the importance of respecting the fundamental human rights of community members in their operational areas.

Mr Nyarko conveyed these instructions during an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at a training workshop organized by the Chamber.

The workshop, held at the Ghana Police Command and Staff College in Winneba, gathered 150 police personnel.

Mr Nyarko highlighted that such training sessions, conducted periodically in collaboration with the Police Service, aim to safeguard the assets of mining companies and enhance the overall service delivery of deployed personnel.

“This is the reason we brought a team comprising the Chamber Legal Person, Madam Sheila Minkah Premo, and some operational officers from the mines led by the chairman of the Chamber Security Committee,” he said.

Facilitators such as Edwin Asare from Goldfields Ghana Limited, Madam Theresa Abrema Obosu, Senior Administrative Officer at AngloGold Ashanti, and Martin Baah Awhireng, Security Manager at Perseus Mining Company Limited, provided insights during the workshop.

They covered topics such as the Minerals and Mining Act, ethical considerations in mining operations, voluntary principles on security and human rights, and responses to security threats in mining areas.

The training underscored the importance of collaboration between external and internal security personnel for effective joint operations.

Participants were encouraged to report any challenges they encounter to the appropriate authorities for prompt resolution.

DSP Moses Gyan Mpettey, Staff Officer Operations, conveyed gratitude on behalf of the Inspector General of Police to the organizers of the training.

He expressed confidence that the newly acquired knowledge and skills would enable the police personnel to contribute effectively to maintaining order in the operational areas of the mining companies.

Frema Opare at loggerheads with Bawumia for naming Napo as running mate – Bobbie Ansah claims

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bobbie Ansah, has revealed that the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Chief of Staff Frema Opare are giving each other a cold shoulder.

Mr. Ansah mentioned that the grudge between the duo is as a result of the party’s decision to elect the then Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO as its running mate.

According to him, the selection of NAPO has brought conflict within the party.

NAPO in recent times, have received backlash from majority Ghanaians who accuse him of arrogance.

In their opinion, NAPO do possess the qualities of a good leader due to his perceived lack of communication skills.

NAPO in an interview during the inauguration of NPP Campaign Team in the Ashanti Region, urged individuals calling on the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for a load-shedding timetable, to draw their own timetable if they feel it’s necessary.

“Let those who want the timetable bring it. I don’t know of any timetable because the ECG has said it is not necessary. Why would someone just wish evil for the country?” he asked.

Recently, NAPO had claimed that President Akufo-Addo’s achievements surpasses those of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and other former presidents.

He stated, “Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo”.

However, Mr Ansah, noted that the NPP should consider themselves losers in the upcoming December polls, as the majority of Ghanaians will vote against them.

He added that a recent survey conducted at the Jubilee House showed that sixty percent of its staff are not supporting the party.
