    Work resumes on Dome-Berekusu-Kitaase road

Construction work on the Dome-Berekusu-Kitaase road project has recommenced after a temporary suspension due to Ghana’s IMF bailout program.

Reports suggest that there is an ongoing activity along the 23 km stretch, which aims to connect the Greater Accra Region with the Eastern Region.

Initially budgeted at GH¢195 million and funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) and the Government of Ghana, the project was originally slated for completion within 24 months after President Akufo-Addo initiated it in July 2022.

However, the government’s IMF bailout request and subsequent debt restructuring caused a pause in construction, impacting local residents and commuters.

Local residents have expressed relief at the project’s resumption but emphasize the need for swift completion to alleviate health and economic challenges posed by the road’s poor condition.

Commuters have voiced concerns about health risks due to the road’s uneven surface and inadequate drainage.

Nicholas Tieku, the project site engineer, confirmed that funding has been secured from the construction firm, enabling work to resume. He also provided updated timelines for project completion and outlined the ongoing scope of activities.

Second phase of Minority’s #OccupyBoGProtest to take off on July 30

The Minority caucus in Parliament has formally informed the Ghana Police Service of their plans to stage a protest demanding the resignation of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, and his two deputies.

Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, sent a letter to the Greater Accra Regional Police command outlining their grievances and intentions.

The protest is scheduled for Tuesday, July 30, 2024, from 8 am to 6 pm in Accra, Greater Accra Region.

Starting at Obra Spot in Kwame Nkrumah Circle, the demonstrators will march through Adabraka to Kingsway and culminate at the Bank of Ghana headquarters.

The protest is centered around concerns regarding the ongoing construction of the BoG’s new headquarters in North Ridge.

“The Governor of the Central Bank and his board continue to engage in wasteful spending on the new Bank of Ghana Corporate head office building and refuse to answer questions on the latest cost of the building which, we are told, has now further escalated to over Two Hundred and Seventy Million United States Dollars (USD$270 million) from its original estimated cost of USD81,882,640.00.

“The Governor again has embarked on the construction of a new house for the Governor himself at a speculated cost of Forty Million United States Dollars (USD$40million) and has refused to disclose to us the actual cost when the Minority wrote to him requesting the information on the cost of the Governor’s house under construction.”

The caucus members organized a comparable protest on October 3, 2023, in response to the Bank’s reported GH¢60.81 billion loss in the 2022 fiscal year.

“Governor Addison has acted illegally in printing money for government without recourse to Parliament and similarly wrote off about GH¢48.4 billion of government debt. After the BoG recorded a colossal loss of over GH¢60.8 billion and negative equity of over GH¢55 billion we concluded that the bank has become insolvent. This is now confirmed by the BoG request for recapitalization by Central Government,” the Minority’s letter added.

Mahama can never become Ghana’s president again – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to refrain from voting for the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama, in the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections.

Addressing attendees at the unveiling of the vice-presidential candidate of his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, in Kumasi on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, Akufo-Addo pointed out that Mahama is the only president in Ghana’s Fourth Republic to have been removed from office after just one term.

He emphasized that Mahama’s tenure was marked by poor performance and asserted that allowing him back into office would be detrimental.

“Let us remember one thing, the person we are contesting against – the leader of the NDC – since the inception of the fourth republic (1992), General Rawlings was president for two successive terms; John Agyekum Kufuor, two successive terms; Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, two successive terms; he (Mahama) is the only person who got one term.

“And he is the same person saying that we should make him president again,” the president said in Twi.

He added, “Someone we removed from power without any effort now wants us to bring him back to the presidency; it is not going to happen. We are not taking him back today, we are not taking him back tomorrow.”

Akufo-Addo also criticized Mahama for portraying himself as if he has never held power before.

“He speaks as if we don’t know him. Does he have anything new to offer? We have seen the works of his hands before and that is why we removed him. He is not good enough for the job.”

Mahama is still bitter for not securing a second term in 2016 – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has expressed that he considers himself exceptionally fortunate as Ghana’s leader, receiving immense support from various quarters, including the Ashanti Kingdom’s overlord, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

He highlighted the privilege of being elected twice to serve the nation, contrasting this with former President John Dramani Mahama’s single term, which he suggested fuels Mahama’s ongoing dissatisfaction.

“I have been president twice, and when your time is up, you find a replacement, but some did not get that privilege; they only had one chance, and that is why they are pained till now,” he said.

“God was on my side to have been president twice,” President Akufo-Addo said at the grand unveiling of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, in Kumasi.

Keep taking credit for Free SHS initiation, God is watching you – Akufo-Addo to Mahama

President Akufo-Addo has refuted former President, John Dramani Mahama’s assertion that he initiated the free Senior High School (SHS) policy, dismissing it as “ridiculous.”

He pointed out past criticisms from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) leadership regarding the policy’s feasibility.

Speaking at the official unveiling of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer’s running mate for the 2024 elections in Kumasi on July 9, 2024, Akufo-Addo emphasized that the NDC is not a credible alternative for Ghanaians.

“Today, the free Senior High School, the same people that criticized it and said all sorts of things about it, are claiming that they implemented it. We will take it like that,” Akufo-Addo said.

“We will take it like that because as God is alive, He is not asleep.”

Akufo-Addo criticized Mahama for what he sees as a reversal on the policy.

“This leader criticized us when we said we were going to implement the Free SHS policy. Now that Ghanaians have accepted the policy, he is saying he is the one who introduced Free SHS. Have you ever heard such a thing?”

He continued, “He indeed said that we are forgetful people. Will we forget this too? Today, the leader of the NDC claims he is the one who introduced Free SHS.

“If he introduced the policy, why did he criticize us when we intended to introduce it? He said if he had 2 billion cedis, he would not invest it in free education.”

In a media engagement on July 7, 2024, Mahama denied allegations that he opposed free SHS, stating that as the originator of progressive free SHS, he supported measures to enhance its benefits.

“I support any bill that will improve our education to make it sustainable, to afford quality education for our children. So yes, any bill that would achieve this is something that I will support,” Mahama stated.

You can’t ‘break the 8’ if you don’t apologize to those you have offended – Ken Agyapong to NPP

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has urged the leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop looking down on the grassroots.

The unsuccessful presidential aspirant in the party’s recent election noted that several leaders have offended the grassroots and should go back and apologize.

Speaking on behalf of the other unsuccessful presidential aspirants at the official unveiling of running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, he acknowledged the grievances of the grassroots members.

“I want to admonish the party leaders who have offended the party members and generated anger at our grassroots to go back and apologize to them.

“You have to respect them. I am not asking you to go and give them money but respecting them alone will change their minds. When you get the opportunity to be a leader, you have a responsibility to unite your people and lead them with respect.

“The Bible says if you want to be a leader, you must first be a servant of the people. Being elected to lead the party does not mean you will lord yourselves over the people.

“Some of the leaders were arrogant and disrespectful to you, but today they have come before you. We should learn from this and go house to house to apologize to those we have offended, and with unity, we will break the eight-year jinx.”

  • Give me credit now that you see the essence of Free SHS policy – Akufo-Addo to Mahama

Give me credit now that you see the essence of Free SHS policy – Akufo-Addo to Mahama

President Akufo-Addo has called on former President Mahama to acknowledge his role in the Free SHS initiative during the unveiling of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) as the running mate to Vice President Bawumia.

“If today Mahama thinks Free SHS is good, he should give me my stone,” President Akufo-Addo remarked to a cheering crowd at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi.

The President reiterated this statement twice in Kumasi: first at the Manhyia Palace, where the NPP introduced NAPO to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, and later at the Jubilee Park during the public unveiling.

He emphasized that the success and widespread acceptance of the Free SHS policy have made it a key campaign message, explaining why the former President has now aligned himself with the initiative.

Additionally, President Nana Addo praised Dr. Bawumia and NAPO for their competence, dedication, and loyalty to his administration and the nation.

He highlighted their significant contributions to his 2016 campaign, leading to NAPO’s appointment as the Minister for Education, where he excelled in implementing the Free SHS policy despite widespread opposition and considerable challenges.

The President urged party supporters and Ghanaians to vote based on the demonstrated competence of Dr. Bawumia and NAPO over the past eight years, asserting that this is the best way to ensure the policy’s continuity.

It is worth noting that former President Mahama, during a media engagement in Accra on September 8, 2024, affirmed his unwavering commitment to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy.

“The Free SHS policy is here to stay, and I am dedicated to enhancing it,” he stated, recognizing the policy’s importance.

This marks a significant shift from years of criticism by the opposition party’s flagbearer and leading members.

  • National Service Authority Bill receives parliamentary approval

National Service Authority Bill receives parliamentary approval

Parliament has approved the National Service Authority Bill 2024.

The bill seeks to establish the National Service Authority, tasked with mobilizing and deploying qualified individuals to key national areas to boost development and improve employability.

The bill also formalizes the authority as a corporate entity with the legal capacity to create and implement policies and programs for national service.

During a media session on Tuesday, July 9, the Executive Director of the National Service Scheme, Osei Assibey Antwi, expressed his enthusiasm for the bill’s passage and its potential impact.

“If you have a vibrant youth, if you have a youth that has a future, if you have a youth that knows where they are going, if you have a youth that has the policy to guide them, especially at this time that the current management and the board have now moved into a new direction called deployment for employment. This deployment for employment can only be enhanced with this current backing.”

Mr. Assibey Antwi added that the bill’s passage would enable the authority to generate internal funds to support the government’s efforts in creating youth employment opportunities.

“Now, Parliament has given us autonomy, an authority vested with powers in areas where it will enhance entrepreneurship.

“With this current status, NSS can work to achieve a lot of internally-generated funds to reduce the burden on the central government, and we know the President will assent to it to give it the finality.”

We have one million ways to win 2024 elections – NPP to NDC

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Bosiako, (Chairman Wontumi) has revealed that the party has devised over one million strategies to ensure victory in the December elections.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony of the NPP’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, Chairman Wontumi conveyed his strong belief in the party’s ability to win the upcoming elections and break the ‘8’.

Chairman Wontumi stressed that the party is ready to utilize “one million ways” to secure a win and is prepared to employ every possible method to achieve victory.

The outspoken politician noted that the NPP has completed its internal elections and is now entirely focused on winning the 2024 elections.

Reflecting on the 2008 elections, Chairman Wontumi asserted that the NDC will not be able to prevent the NPP from achieving victory this time around.

He emphasized the party’s preparedness and determination to overcome any challenges posed by their political opponents.

During the ceremony, Chairman Wontumi highlighted the significance of unity and coordination within the party. He mentioned that selecting Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate has further strengthened the party’s resolve to win.

Furthermore, Chairman Wontumi lauded Dr. Prempeh’s credentials and his appeal to the grassroots, which he believes will greatly contribute to the NPP’s success in the elections. He urged all party members and supporters to rally behind their candidates and work tirelessly for a resounding victory.

“We know how to win the elections. NPP, we have finished from polling stations. We have finished MPs, the president and now the running mate, we have finished every internal election in the NPP. Now what is left is winning the 2024 elections.

“They can’t stop us. 2008 they delayed us. 2024 elections, NDC you cannot stop us, we are winning. It is possible. Tell the NDC that we have one million ways to win the 2024 elections and we are ready,” he stated.

Bawumia and NAPO are friends – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has stated that the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahumudu Bawumia and the Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) are friends who have joined forces to diligently serve Ghanaians.

Akufo-Addo described the duo as a perfect team committed to advancing the coutry’s prosperity and well-being when given the nod December 7.

The president urged Ghanains to give Dr Bawumia and NAPO the necessary support to their efforts of breaking the eight governance cycle.

The president stated this during a ceremony held in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, to publicly announce NAPO as the party’s running mate.

“Just as you stuck with me nicely, so should you relate with them. These two are friends. They will have a good relationship with you just like I had with you.Thank you for the love and support you have given me all these years,” he added.

In recent times, many have stated that the NPP’s chances of seeking another term are low as compared to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

To them, president Akufo-Addo’s poor performance and Bawumia’s lack of expertise will impede their victory in the upcoming December polls .

On Friday, July 5, the NPP’s National Council formally endorsed NAPO as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, a decision that has garnered praise from top party officials, including President Akufo-Addo, who expressed confidence in their leadership abilities ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh expressed gratitude to Dr. Bawumia for entrusting him with the role of running mate, pledging full commitment to ensuring victory for the party.

In response to criticisms of his perceived arrogance, the NPP has defended NAPO staunchly, with suggestions emerging that he should use prepared scripts to manage his public appearances effectively.

NAPO’s qualifications and strengths are beyond ‘dumsor’ timetable interview – Rodney Nkrumah

Rodney Nkrumah Boateng the Press Secretary to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has defended his boss’ reputation following criticism over his casual response to inquiries about the ‘Dumsor’ timetable.

NAPO faced severe backlash months ago for suggesting that those seeking a load-shedding schedule should create their own during peak power outages.

In an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV, Rodney Nkrumah Boateng argued that NAPO’s suitability as a potential running mate for Dr. Bawumia should not be judged solely on a single media interaction. He stressed that NAPO’s qualifications and capabilities go beyond that incident.

While acknowledging the inconvenience of power cuts, Nkrumah Boateng assured that measures are being implemented to resolve the ‘Dumsor’ issue and ensure stable electricity supply.

He highlighted that the current power challenges are less severe and frequent compared to those during the Mahama administration, underscoring progress in addressing the issue.

“Clearly, what pertained recently cannot by any stretch of the imagination be compared to what happened in 2014 or 2015 there about. But again. The important thing is, it is what it is, and what is being done about it and it is what the timelines are and how to ensure that power is brought back.

“Nobody enjoys power cuts, what happened happened, and those discussions have been had. And even before those discussions, people have said whatever they have to say.

“You cannot define him by just one single interview and one sentence that he said, that is blatantly pretty unfair…the important thing is that, well, fortunately now we are way past all that, and we’re looking forward to what lies ahead, and then we take it from there,” he maintained.

Nkrumah Boateng emphasized that evaluating NAPO based solely on one interview and a single statement is unfair, noting that discussions have moved beyond past criticisms. He expressed optimism about future prospects and moving forward positively.

North Tongu Member of Parliament (MP) Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has expressed concerns about the delayed compensation for hundreds of victims affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage in Tongu.

He emphasized that these individuals have not received full compensation from the government even after 10 months.

Addressing Chiefs and Queen mothers of Tongu in Juapong, Mr. Ablakwa underscored the importance of upholding the fundamental human rights of the affected individuals. He noted that many residents are still living in temporary shelters, while farmers whose crops were destroyed and residents whose homes were inundated await adequate compensation.

Mr. Ablakwa disclosed that his office has obtained a letter from the Volta River Authority (VRA) indicating plans for a controlled spillage in the near future. He stressed the need for an emergency preparedness plan, alternative drainage solutions, and continued dialogue with local leaders and stakeholders to prevent a recurrence of last year’s devastating events.

Moreover, the MP mentioned that his legal team is compiling detailed information and verifying property losses to pursue rightful compensation from the VRA.

Additionally, he called on the government to prioritize the reconstruction of the Sayikope steel bridge, which collapsed on January 26, disrupting daily activities and endangering schoolchildren and pregnant women who rely on boats to cross to Adidome.

Former police officer, Emmanuel Nyame, who has been on the look out since 2019 on charges of defiling a 13-year-old girl, has been apprehended at Kotoka International Airport upon his return from Dubai.

Mr Nyame, attached to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), had evaded authorities after initially facing arrest in 2019.

Originally granted bail by the Koforidua Circuit Court “B” with two family members of his fiancée standing surety for a GH¢40,000 bond, Nyame absconded, disconnecting his mobile phones.

Prosecution details reveal that in April 2019, Nyame took the victim to various locations, including a drinking spot and his residence, where he sexually assaulted her despite her objections, warning her not to disclose the incident.

Following a medical examination confirming the assault, Nyame was charged with defilement but fled the country through Togo to Dubai.

His return led to his arrest at the airport and subsequent appearance before the Koforidua High Court, where he remains in custody pending further proceedings.

2024 BECE: Teachers engaging in exam malpractice must be named and shamed – GNECC to GES

The Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) has called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) to revoke the licenses of teachers involved in examination malpractice and to publicly publish their names.

This request follows the arrest of three teachers in Bekawi and two invigilators at Gyinigyini in the Jaman North District on Monday, July 8, the first day of the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

They were apprehended by operatives of the National Intelligence Bureau and GES officials.

Incidents of malpractice during the annual examination have raised significant concerns about its integrity.

Speaking to Starr News, Bernice Mpare Gyekye, Coordinator for the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC), emphasized the necessity of revoking the licenses of these teachers as a deterrent to others.

“This is where GES should take strict measures to make sure that these teachers are severely punished and the learners are also punished according to law. And then we publish them with their names and pictures all over the media and this is going to serve as a deterrent for others to desist from such acts.

“For teachers who are aiding students to engage in malpractice, their licenses should be withdrawn with immediate effect and even if possible prosecution should come in. When this is done it will deter others from doing same.”

Mahama is matured, he has solutions to Ghana’s woes – NDC MP

Former Member of Parliament for Lower Manya Krobo, Michael Teye Nyaunu, has voiced his support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

He emphasized that Mahama’s political maturity will greatly benefit Ghana if he becomes President again.

In an interview with the media, Teye Nyaunu remarked, “He [Mahama] has learned a lot. The way he was delivering extemporaneously shows that he is a man with a firm grasp on leadership and knows how to navigate the complexities of governance. Now, he is mature. Mahama is truly mature now, and if we have him as President, I have no doubts or qualms. I believe the second coming of Mahama will be quite advantageous to the nation.”

Mr Nyaunu, who served in Parliament for 16 years since his first election in 1996, is known for his critical stance towards members of his own party, including its leadership.

He was suspended by the NDC in the Lower Manya Krobo constituency for misconduct along with three other party members.

He also ran as an independent parliamentary candidate in the 2012 elections but later rejoined the NDC.

Despite his past criticisms of Mahama, Mr Nyaunu now commends the former President’s growth and experience in politics.

He described the Mahama-Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang ticket as superior and more trustworthy than the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) candidates, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Bawumia’s campaign will collapse if he tries a ‘meet the press’ session – Osei Akoto

A former National Organizer hopeful of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Henry Osei Akoto, has challenged the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to participate in a ‘meet the press’ session with Ghanaian media.

In a statement shared on Monday, July 8, 2024, Osei Akoto asserted that Vice President Bawumia would avoid such an engagement because it could jeopardize his campaign.

“If Bawumia tries any ‘meet the press’, his campaign will collapse. He won’t dare,” he wrote.

Osei Akoto’s comments came following a press engagement by former President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC flagbearer, on Sunday, July 7, 2024.

During this event, Mahama outlined his proposed policies, including social intervention programs and measures to tackle corruption, aimed at revitalizing Ghana’s development trajectory.

Below are the 20 key takeaways from the media engagement:

    1. The 24-hour economy policy will increase the local production of goods for import substitution, exports, and create decent well-paying jobs for the youth.
    2. My government will scrap the COVID levy, E-levy, bet winnings levy, and nuisance port levies to ameliorate the plight of suffering Ghanaians.
    3. Free SHS has come to stay. No one can cancel it. I am coming to improve its implementation and make it better. I will support any bill intended to improve education in Ghana.
    4. My government will invest $3 billion in ICT and partner with local tech start-ups and businesses to launch a ‘Digital Jobs Initiative’ that will create at least 300,000 skilled employment opportunities for the youth in the digital space.
    5. I will establish a National Women’s Development Bank that will be run by women to support one million women-led and women-owned businesses.
    6. I will roll out the One Million Coders Program that will train one million youth in coding and other IT programs for job creation.
    7. I am a staunch Christian who has supported my local Assemblies of God church to build churches for God. But I don’t condone stealing in the name of God. I will conduct a forensic audit into the cathedral loot.
    8. I will not allow any of my appointees to involve themselves in mining or illegal mining. Mining in forest reserves will be banned under my government.
    9. No appointee of mine will be allowed to buy state assets.
    10. I will prioritize fiscal discipline to restore investor confidence in the economy and pursue prudent measures that will boost cocoa and oil production to increase our forex earnings and stabilize the exchange rate.
    11. I will fight corruption and ensure accountability on the part of government officials, whether they be NPP or NDC. I will not scrap the OSP. Neither will I be a corruption clearing agent.
    12. I have been out of office for seven years, seven months. The NPP has not found any evidence of wrongdoing against me. Their lies against me to the effect that I own hotels in Dubai and that my government spent $10 million on presidential diaries have all been exposed. Don’t fall for the NPP’s lies.
    13. My track record in the fight against corruption is there for all to see. I prosecuted my own appointees, including my own friend, and retrieved about GHS50 million for the state in the GYEEDA scandal.
    14. I will run a lean government of not more than 60 ministers and cut down on government expenditure and waste.
    15. I will create a safe and congenial atmosphere for the media and anti-corruption agencies to work.
    16. I will pursue justice for the families of the eight Ghanaians who were murdered during the 2020 general elections and other victims of state-sponsored brutalities and punish the culprits.
    17. I will modernize agriculture to boost food production to reduce food inflation and hardships. I will also prioritize agribusiness and agro-processing for import substitution and exports.
    18. I have been exorcised from the ‘father for all’ syndrome.
    19. We shall protect the votes of Ghanaians through vigilance.
    20. Four years is enough for me to reset Ghana, create a 24-hour economy, wage a serious fight against corruption, and restore our nation back to the path of development and progress.

A/R: Woman goes blind after boyfriend assaulted her at Tarkwa-Maakro

A 40-year-old woman has reportedly lost her sight following an alleged assault by her boyfriend, 43, a self-styled pastor turned street preacher Tarkwa-Maakro, Douglas Appiah, Suame Municipality, Ashanti Region.

According to Naomi Asante, the victim, she decided to end her relationship with Appiah and move out of their shared room.

In response, Appiah allegedly subjected her to severe beatings, repeatedly slamming her head against a wall, which resulted in her blindness.

Naomi recounted her ordeal to student journalists at the OTEC School of Journalism and Communication Studies, Obaaku Sika Amponsah and Asonaba Kwadwo Wusu, on Sunday, July 7, 2024. She disclosed that after the assault, she was confined to a room for a week without assistance.

Doctors at Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital have warned Naomi that immediate intervention is crucial to potentially reverse her condition and prevent permanent blindness.

Local authorities have arrested Pastor Douglas Appiah. Assembly Member Prince Asamoah Boakye confirmed that Naomi was found locked in a room and showed signs of physical trauma, consistent with her account based on preliminary police investigations.

However, Pastor Appiah has denied the allegations, asserting that Naomi suffers from a “spiritual problem” that causes violent behavior. He claims she fell and injured herself, leading to blindness.

The conflicting stories have raised community concern, especially as residents attest that Naomi had normal vision before the incident.

Pay 5-month salary due Jubilee House cleaners – Sam George to Akufo-Addo

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Samuel George Nettey, has urged President Nana Akufo-Addo to ensure that cleaners at the Jubilee House receive their overdue five-month salaries.

Foster Domey, who claims seven years of service at the Jubilee House, expressed the hardship faced due to not receiving salary for five months.

“We have asked why we have not been paid for five months. But the company which employed us says the government has not paid them, hence the inability to pay us our salary,” he said in an interview with an Accra-based radio station.

Assured by management of imminent payment, Domey and his colleagues remain optimistic about receiving their dues soon.

Speaking on GHOne TV, Samuel George Nettey directly appealed to President Akufo-Addo to intervene and ensure the cleaners’ salaries are promptly settled.

“I am using this as an appeal to the president. President Akufo-Addo, the cleaners at the Jubilee House say for five months they have not been paid their salary. Please pay them. For five months, President Akufo-Addo why? What it takes you to fly one trip with Serwaa Broni will pay all these cleaners.”

  • Roads Ministry to launch call center and maintenance app

Roads Ministry to launch call center and maintenance app

The Ministry of Roads and Highways, under the leadership of Minister Francis Asenso-Boakye, is preparing to launch a specialized call centre and mobile application aimed at swiftly addressing public concerns regarding road defects.

A statement from the Ministry outlines that the new Maintenance App will enable citizens to report issues like potholes by uploading photos and providing precise location details directly from their smartphones.

At the Ghana Highway Authority’s 50th-anniversary event in Accra, Minister Asenso-Boakye emphasized the critical need to enhance road maintenance practices nationwide.

He acknowledged a historical trend where significant investments in road development have not been matched with adequate investments in maintenance.

“Successive governments have made significant investments in road development without a corresponding investment in road maintenance.”

To address this disparity, the Ministry has committed to allocating “60% of its annual maintenance budget to support the call centre and app initiative”.

“Prioritizing maintenance, particularly in critical areas like pothole patching and spot improvements, will help address the country’s poor road maintenance culture.”

Minister Asenso-Boakye highlighted the importance of prioritizing maintenance, particularly in crucial areas such as pothole repair and spot improvements, to improve the country’s overall road maintenance standards.

The anniversary celebration, themed “Ghana Highway Authority at 50 – Development and Maintenance of Quality Highways: Retrospect and Prospect,” was attended by Chief of Staff at the Office of the President, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare.

She commended the Ghana Highways Authority for its pivotal role in advancing the nation’s economic development and enhancing connectivity over the past fifty years.

“The Authority has enabled the seamless flow of goods and services across the nation, connecting rural and urban areas and ensuring equal access to opportunities for all citizens, regardless of location,” she noted.

She also paid tribute to the dedicated service of the Authority’s staff, including notable individuals such as Ing. Kwesi Abbey Sam, Ing. H.O.A Quaynor, Ing. B.L.T. Sakibu, and Ing. Sylvia Asare, a trailblazer for female engineers.

We lost 2016 elections due to dumsor – NDC

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, spokesperson for the John Mahama campaign team, has admitted that the energy crisis (dumsor) significantly played a role in the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) loss in the 2016 general elections.

In an interview with Channel One TV on Monday, July 8, Joyce Bawah Mogtari clarified that Mahama’s strategy during the energy crisis prioritized finding lasting solutions rather than leveraging it for political advantage.

She noted the formidable challenge the administration faced in swiftly resolving the persistent power outages, despite their sincere efforts.

Bawah Mogtari highlighted the widespread frustration and discontent among Ghanaians caused by ‘Dumsor,’ emphasizing its significant impact.

Acknowledging the administration’s shortcomings in addressing the issue adequately, she attributed public dissatisfaction and electoral consequences to these challenges for the NDC.

Reflecting on lessons learned, Bawah Mogtari underscored Mahama’s commitment to effectively tackling the energy crisis should he have the opportunity to lead again.

She expressed confidence that Mahama’s leadership would continue to prioritize substantive solutions over political exploitation.

“I believe strongly and maybe because I’m very close to the campaign, that in 2016, one of our biggest misfortunes was the fact that we had these crippling power outages.”

“I mean look, the whole of Ghana suffered enormously from those outages and people were up in arms. Yes, maybe we could even have offered solutions in a much quicker time, but it wasn’t that easy to do.”

“This was a country that over the years depended largely on Akosombo Dam, we used to have crawlers telling us about the water levels, and then the rain patterns changed, and then climate issues happened. And somehow, it threw us completely overboard. Look, it was not in Mr Mahama’s interest for that whole protracted power outage to have actually occurred, but it happened,” she said.

Akufo-Addo has failed to supply textbooks to Basic Schools for years – Clement Apaak

Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Select Committee on Education, Dr. Clement Apaak, has expressed grave concern over the Akufo-Addo government’s prolonged failure to procure textbooks for basic schools, thereby hindering the learning experience.

In an interview with Kwame Minkah on TV XYZ’s Dwaboase programme, the MP for Builsa South emphasized that this governmental oversight will adversely affect the performance of candidates in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

Dr. Apaak, an educator and legislator, voiced his bewilderment at the government’s persistent inability to fulfill its obligations to publishers, leading to a refusal to print essential textbooks for students.

He described the situation as alarming.

“The government owes publishers and has failed to settle the debt, resulting in their refusal to print textbooks for the students… The situation is worrying,” the legislator remarked in Akan.

He criticized the government for what he sees as a lack of commitment to enhancing educational standards in the country, specifically under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

“It is only under President Akufo-Addo that we are experiencing this,” he asserted, arguing that the government is jeopardizing the future of the upcoming generation.

Despite efforts by the Minority to press the government to address education sector challenges, Dr. Apaak lamented the apparent reluctance of education sector authorities to resolve the textbook procurement issue.

Dr. Apaak’s concerns coincide with the ongoing BECE examinations for Form Three students, which are crucial for their transition from Junior High School.

    2024 BECE

According to the West African Examination Council (WAEC), the BECE includes 282,648 male and 286,447 female candidates, with 19,506 schools participating across the country.

The examinations are being conducted in 2,123 locations nationwide, supervised by 2,123 supervisors, 1,889 assistant supervisors, and 19,973 invigilators.

No govt official will acquire state properties under Mahama – Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has asserted that the practice of government officials acquiring state properties will be halted in the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

He stated that if President Akufo-Addo refuses to sign the Private Members Bill he intends to introduce, which aims to prevent government officials from acquiring state assets, former President John Mahama will sign it if elected.

Reflecting on former President Mahama’s recent media engagement, Ablakwa praised Mahama for assuring the nation that his government would not permit any member to purchase state assets.

“It is most refreshing to hear former President John Mahama assure the nation during his masterful, inspirational, sincere and intellectually stimulating engagement with the media that no member of his government will be allowed to buy state assets.

“We are convinced that even if President Akufo-Addo refuses to assent to our Private Member’s Bill prohibiting politicians and politically exposed persons from buying state assets, President Mahama will not hesitate in granting presidential assent when he wins the December 7, 2024 elections.

“Very gratifying to know that the canker of State Capture will soon be vanquished under President Mahama.”

Ablakwa expressed confidence that Mahama would approve the bill even if Akufo-Addo rejects it.

Earlier, Ablakwa vowed to oppose any government official, regardless of party affiliation, who attempts to acquire state assets.

He cited his longstanding opposition to state capture, noting his past legal challenge against former NPP National Chairman Jake Obetsebi Lamptey’s acquisition of state properties, despite losing that case.

“This will be my position even if the person is a member of my party,” he said on the New Day show on TV3 on Wednesday, June 19.

Ablakwa also criticized Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong’s involvement in attempting to acquire hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), alleging a conflict of interest due to Acheampong’s ministerial position during the acquisition process.

The Ministry of Works and Housing has received five bids for the completion of over 1500 unfinished units in the Saglemi Housing project.

These bids are currently pending evaluation by an independent entity selected through assistance from the Public Procurement Authority, as announced by sector minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.

The minister stated that the evaluation entity will be chosen on Wednesday to assess the bids, ensuring a transparent process in securing a partner for the project.

Following the submission of bids, Mr. Oppong Nkrumah informed the media that an accounting firm will present the evaluation report within seven days.

Subsequently, the preferred bidder will be selected to finalize the Saglemi Housing project.

“We have received five bids. From today, we have already requested the Public Procurement Authority to help us select an independent evaluation entity. And I do understand that about four organisations have been pre-qualified by the Public Procurement Authority, out of which we will select one.

“On Wednesday, as I mentioned, we will select the independent evaluation entity and we will handle these bids to the independent evaluation entity. And according to our work programme, within seven days we are expecting to receive the revert from the independent evaluation entity, which will tell us which of these five bidders is a preferred bidder.”

We are not politicizing Manhyia Palace – NPP to NDC

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has refuted claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) alleging its intention to politicize the Manhyia palace.

Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, suggested that the NPP plans to involve the revered traditional institution in partisan politics through the selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a royal from the Manhyia palace.

However, in an interview with Citi News, Haruna Mohammed, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, described Gbande’s comments as unfortunate.

“Unfortunately, when people are identified by where they come from, there is no doubt that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is from a royal gate and that is a fact. The chief [Asantehene] touted this particular angle of which Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh comes.

“Where lies the drawing of the Asantehene or the [Manhyia] palace into politics? The Asantehene’s palace is the most revered in our land. And I don’t think that the Asantehene has ever engaged himself in political activity.

“He is a very distinguished king who is much respected by the rank and file of the kingdom. But it is not a crime for any member that comes from that palace and without title within the chieftaincy divide within the palace to do politics.”

Bawumia to publicly endorse NAPO as running mate in Kumasi today

The Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), will be officially unveiled as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on today, Tuesday, July 9, in Kumasi, Ashanti Region.

According to the Ashanti Regional Organiser of the NPP, Francis Adomako, the region is eagerly anticipating the event.

On Friday, July 5, the NPP’s National Council formally endorsed NAPO as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, a decision that has garnered praise from top party officials, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who expressed confidence in their leadership abilities ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Following NAPO’s elevation, the NPP has opened nominations for the Manhyia South constituency, leaving the parliamentary seat vacant pending an official declaration by Parliament. The party has assured a fair nomination process and cautioned aspirants to maintain decorum, stressing the internal nature of the selection.

In a potentially intriguing development, NAPO’s brother, Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, is reportedly seeking the same parliamentary seat, setting the stage for a family rivalry in local politics.

The 2024 presidential election is shaping up to be fiercely contested, with the NPP’s duo, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), facing off against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket led by former President John Dramani Mahama and Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.

I’ll name my running mate a week after I become PNC’s flagbearer – Bernard Mornah

The former National Chairman and aspiring presidential candidate for the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, stated that he will promptly select his running mate if he is confirmed as the party’s presidential candidate.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning on July 8, Mornah emphasized that, unlike the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he will announce his running mate within a week of his confirmation.

“I have vested interest in becoming the president of Ghana and will be choosing and announcing my running mate exactly a week after the party confirms me as the presidential candidate, and that is my promise to you,” he said.

He noted that he is particularly attentive to the flagbearers and running mates of the NPP and NDC, stressing the importance of their ability to improve the country’s economic situation.

Mr Mornah mentioned that this focus reassures him that even if he does not win the election, the country will be governed by competent individuals.

“I’m interested in the personalities. In the unpalatable situation where I don’t become president, one of them should be able to transform our economy for the good.”

Discussing which team might be best suited to lead the country, he remarked that while the NPP’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, known as Napo, was ‘solid’ in opposition, he has shown ‘arrogance’ in power.

The NPP recently announced Dr. Opoku Prempeh as the running mate for its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, following extensive deliberations within the party’s executive ranks.

The party’s National Council unanimously approved Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s nomination as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate for the 2024 presidential election.

Voter registration mop-up exercise begins Aug 1

A mop-up voter registration exercise will be conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC) from August 1 to August 3, 2024.

This initiative aims to register individuals who turned 18 after the limited voter registration period and those who missed the previous registration opportunity.

Additionally, the EC has scheduled a voter exhibition from August 20 to August 27, allowing registered voters to verify their details and make necessary corrections ahead of the elections.

Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, announced this at a press conference on Monday, July 8, during a visit from the Election Security Taskforce.

She stated, “I would like to put on record that the mop-up of the voter registration exercise will take place from August 1–3, 2024, and it is to afford persons who turned 18 after May 29 or persons who have not previously registered the opportunity to get onto our register; this goes to persons who are eligible,” she disclosed.

The taskforce, led by Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffu Dampare, briefed the commission on election security performance in the first half of the year.

The EC emphasized the importance of these exercises in ensuring a comprehensive and accurate voter register, underscoring its commitment to facilitating a fair and transparent electoral process.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has confirmed the arrest of three teachers and two invigilators on the first day of the 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The council reported that the teachers were arrested in Bekwai, Ashanti Region, while the invigilators were apprehended in the Bono Region for allegedly aiding students in answering questions during the exams.

Despite these incidents, the Head of the National Office at WAEC, Wendy Addy-Lamptey, noted a generally peaceful start to the examination in an interview with Citi FM on Monday, July 8, 2024.

“With regard to the conduct itself, I think we’ve had good conduct this morning and again this afternoon. I must say that we have just had a few reports. A few people were picked up, some teachers in Obuasi, Bekwai, trying to help the candidates. About three or four of them, but as I said, we just had a report, so the details of it will be forthcoming, and then we’ll put it out,” she stated.

GAF to testify in ambulance procurement case

Lawyers for the third accused in the ongoing ambulance procurement trial have subpoenaed the Ghana Armed Forces to testify and provide documentary evidence at the Financial and Economic Court.

This move aims to challenge the authenticity of a dismissal letter used by the prosecution during cross-examination.

Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, while cross-examining Richard Jakpa, suggested that Jakpa was dismissed from the Ghana Armed Forces due to persistent misconduct and significant debts to individuals and institutions.

In response, Jakpa denied any knowledge of the alleged dismissal letter presented by the prosecution. He claimed he was not aware of the letter, stating he had never seen it before it was tendered into evidence.

To address these claims, Jakpa’s lawyer is compelling the Ghana Armed Forces to appear in court and testify under oath about the authenticity of the dismissal letter.

Richard Jakpa, a former Ghana Air Force officer, is on trial alongside Minority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, facing charges of willfully causing financial loss to the state and misapplying state property in the procurement of ambulances.

In a writ dated July 5, 2024, Mr Jakpa requests the court to summon Air Commodore Adu Gyamfi, the Military Secretary of the Ghana Armed Forces, to testify and produce documents related to a May 2004 special report by the Commanding Officer.

This report allegedly suggests that Mr Jakpa had reached his ceiling, as referenced in a September 12, 2007 letter signed by Brigadier General MKG Ahiaglo for the Chief of Army Staff.

Jakpa also seeks confirmation from the Ghana Armed Forces, with documentary evidence, that he owed them $300.

The case is scheduled to be heard on July 16 at midday at the Financial and Economic Court at the High Court complex.

You have a big problem if you want a 71-year-old man to protest for your freedom – Kwesi Pratt to youth

Editor-in-Chief of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt, has encouraged Ghanaian youth to take proactive roles in advocating for their rights and freedoms.

Making an appearance on the KokroKoo Show on Peace FM, he highlighted the limitations of relying on older generations for activism

Kwesi Pratt also emphasized the need for youth to step forward and lead initiatives aimed at societal change.

He underscored the importance of youth activism in shaping the future of Ghana, urging young people to engage actively in issues that affect their wellbeing and future prospects.

“I am not a child; I am 71 years old. The physical activities I engaged in during my twenties and thirties are beyond my capability now. If you, a young man, are waiting for a 71-year-old to demonstrate for your freedom, then you are mistaken,” he added.

Mahama is full of lies, be vigilant – Konadu Rawlings to Ghanaians

Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP), has dismissed President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) claims of “unprecedented” infrastructural development as falsehoods.

In an interview with Class91.3FM’s Paa Kwesi Parker-Wilson, Mrs. Rawlings accused Mr. Mahama of attempting to deceive Ghanaians with exaggerated achievements.

“I don’t see what the president is talking about because he is lying to us and we won’t accept it,” Mrs Rawlings said.

She criticized the Mahama administration for what she viewed as misplaced priorities, citing an example where a school in Derma, designed to accommodate over 5,000 people, was commissioned despite the local population being fewer than 300 residents.

“I saw them [government] commissioning a school in Derma. … The population in Derma is not more than 300 people [but] the school that has been put there can house over 5,000 people. Is that what you want your monies to be used for?” she questioned.

Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings expressed optimism about her party’s prospects in the upcoming December 7 elections, confident that the existing two-party dominance in Ghana could be overturned.

“You go to some countries, there are say two or three parties that have entrenched themselves, then suddenly one comes and sees everybody off and they become the government,” she stated.

  • I would rather serve a jail term in U.S prison than in Ghana – MP aspirant

I would rather serve a jail term in U.S prison than in Ghana – MP aspirant

The New Patriotic Party’s nominee for Bantama constituency, Daniel Okyem Aboagye, has stated a preference for serving jail time in the United States of America (USA) rather than in Ghanaian prisons, citing the perceived comfort of American correctional facilities.

His comments arise amidst concerns that his candidacy and potential election as Member of Parliament could breach Ghana’s electoral laws due to his dual citizenship status.

Reports indicate that the NPP in Bantama has prepared Henry Kwabena Kokofu, the former MP who lost to Mr Aboagye in the party primaries, as an alternative candidate should Aboagye fail the Electoral Commission’s vetting process.

Ghanaian law prohibits individuals with dual nationality from running for public office, a precedent underscored by the case of former Bawku Central MP Adamu Daramani Sakande, who faced legal consequences for holding dual citizenship.

In an interview with Chief Jerry Forson on Accra100.5FM, Mr Aboagye, also known as Wofa Atta, vehemently denied allegations of dual citizenship, asserting his unwavering dedication to Ghana.

Aboagye expressed his longstanding aspiration to serve as an MP in Ghana since 1994, reiterating his commitment to Ghanaian citizenship and disavowing any intent to obtain foreign nationality.

He concluded by highlighting his apprehension about potential legal consequences, indicating a preference for U.S. imprisonment over facing incarceration in Ghanaian prisons due to his perception of the conditions in American correctional facilities.

“If you want to do a risk management or backup, then there is the need for us all to sit and deliberate on the matter. Secondly, I do not have dual citizenship; I have never been a dual citizen. It is out of love for Ghana that I left my job in the United States of America to return home. Over there, I was being taking care of properly as an accountant, but due to the mismanagement of the Ghanaian economy by the NDC government, I decided to come back to Ghana to help fix the problem.

“My ambition to be a Member of Parliament in Ghana was nurtured as far back as 1994. Since that time, I have taken steps to ensure that I become an MP. I have never been a citizen of another country and I will never do that. I will not say that Americans are not good; they lead Ghana in almost everything, but the love for my country Ghana will not let me sell my citizenship.

“Do you think I want what befell Adamu Sakande to happen to me? Do you think I will leave America to come and become an MP in Ghana and later be incarcerated? I will rather prefer to violate the laws in America and be incarcerated in America than be in a Ghanaian prison because America’s prisons are just like your home. I will never do that. I am smarter than that.”

  • Ghana on track for Universal Health Coverage before 2030 – NHIA

Ghana on track for Universal Health Coverage before 2030 – NHIA

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has forecasted that Ghana will achieve universal health coverage before 2030.

Chief Executive of the NHIA, Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, emphasized the implementation of innovative measures, including a forthcoming preventive healthcare initiative integrated into the NHIS claim package.

This initiative aims to provide medical check-ups on birthdays for all enrolled Ghanaians, with the goal of alleviating financial burdens on both individuals and the nation.

“To achieve universal health coverage, you see there are things you need to do. So far, over our 20-year history, the NHIS 20 years history, it has been curative. So curative means that you get sick before you go to the hospital. But we believe that with the rise of the noncommunicable diseases, hypertension for example, hypertension contributes a lot of our claims, diabetes.”

“So we want to reduce the cost burden of the curative services. By doing that, you introduce what we call a preventive approach, so annual health check for every Ghanaian. So you detect the diseases early. Not only that, you also make sure by doing that, you increase life expectancy and, you reduce the cost burden on the patient in the whole country.”

“The modalities are being worked out, and I’m sure very soon, preventive health care will become part of our claim benefit package in such a way that on your month of birth, you’ll get a notification from the NHIA that goes to the nearest health facility and check your basic vitals. The vitals, obviously, your sugar levels, your, BP, your body weight, and all those things will be included…Reforms are taking place, and I’m hoping that it will all come to the benefit of all Ghanaians,” he stated.

Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, who voiced concern about co-payments at various health facilities, asserted that the issue must be tackled directly.

“Co-payments are a big issue, and we need to address it head-on. We need to address it by our systems, and we also need to address it from the provider’s point of view. Now if you look at our systems, okay, the government e-pharmacy platform offers us the best solution out of this co-payment.

“Because now when you go to the hospital facilities, they tell you that some of the medicines are not there. But it’s very difficult for our clients to understand the packages we provide in terms of the medicines because they are not experts.”

“So by this, what we are doing is we put the responsibility on the pharmacies to make sure that they upload their prescriptions on the e-pharmacy platforms because of the property addressing system. So it can be delivered to their local pharmacies or the patients can go to the various, local pharmacies and collect it.

“So once we also review the tariffs and give the pharma companies and the facilities the accurate tariffs, we will seek parliamentary approval for what we call the automatic price adjustment so that we have what we call the national tariff review committee that will look at the economic conditions and review the tariffs as we go along.”

“In this case, we from the NHIS will be fulfilling our part, and we will now put the burden on the facilities to fulfil their part. Then we use the systems to check in terms of the e-pharmacy platform to make sure that patients are not being charged for the services that are being paid for by the NHIS,” he stated.

  • Inheriting your husbands’ surname is archaic – Judge to wives

Inheriting your husbands’ surname is archaic – Judge to wives

A High Court Judge, Justice Alexander Osei Tutu, has characterized the tradition of married women adopting their husbands’ surnames as antiquated and discriminatory towards women.

In a recent interview with JoyNews, Justice Tutu underscored the necessity of reevaluating this practice, which he argued is rooted in English customs that historically marginalized women but now lacks legal relevance.

He highlighted that historically, women took their husbands’ names due to legal incapacitation, as a form of identity and recognition.

“This practice originated as an English custom intended to demean women, but its significance has diminished over time.”

He highlighted the significant changes in today’s laws, which empower women to own property and manage legal affairs independently.

“The era where women were infringed by law is no more. So why do women continue to adopt the surnames of husbands when they tie the knot?”

He pointed out that religious texts do not explicitly require women to change their names upon marriage.

“If you want to use the Bible to justify it, you may get it wrong because nowhere in the Bible did we have a woman changing her name because she got married. Eve was never called Adam Eve. Jesus’ mother was not called Mary Joseph.”

Justice Tutu urged Ghanaian society to abandon traditions that no longer serve a legal or societal purpose in modern times.

Ayawaso West Wuogon MP accused of illegal transfer of votes

Allegations have surfaced against Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan suggesting she was involved in the unauthorized registration and transfer of votes within her constituency on Sunday, July 7.

The controversy arises as this activity allegedly took place after the official voter registration exercise by the Electoral Commission (EC) had concluded.

In a viral video, a female commentator alleged that the activity was been taken place at the MP’s office at Dzorwulu, Accra.

“Today is Sunday, July 7, exactly 4pm we had a hint that some people were being registered at Hon Lydia’s office, Dzorwulu, for transfer of votes. The EC has already concluded the exercise. This is not right. Ghanaians let’s wake up. This is illegal,” she added.

This has sparked significant concern and debate among constituents and political observers alike.

The EC had previously announced the official end of the voter registration exercise, clearly stipulating that no further registrations or transfers would be accepted past the deadline.

The EC on July 1 unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at simplifying the voting process for prison inmates, students, and security personnel.

These measures were discussed during the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held in Accra.

From July 3rd to 5th, 2024, inmates, students, and security personnel will have the opportunity to transfer their votes to the constituencies where they currently reside.

This initiative includes prison inmates who have yet to register as voters.

They will be registered during the Mop-Up limited voter registration exercise scheduled from August 1st to 3rd, 2024.

Students wishing to transfer their votes to their campus constituencies must present their student ID cards as proof of enrollment.

However, they will not be allowed to transfer their votes from campus to other constituencies.

Political party agents were authorized to observe the transfer process at EC District offices and at the 25 campuses where the recently concluded limited voter registration exercise was conducted.

2024 Elections: Count yourselves losers – Captain Smart to NPP

Prominent media personality and host of Maakye Show on Onua TV, Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has asked the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to give up in their efforts of breaking the eight governance cycle.

According to him, president Akufo-Addo’s poor performance has impeded the party’s chances of seeking another term.

During a recent broadcast, he indicated that the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramni Mahama will assume Ghana’s presidential seat come January 7, 2025.

According to him, he has no doubts that the former president shall be Ghanaians preferred candidate come December 7.

The majority of the electorate, he stated, will choose Mahama over the flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia due to the latter’s inexperience and lack of capabilities and abilities.

However, he has cautioned Mahama against failing to deliver on his promises when he is sworn in as Ghana’s president.

The journalist who is known for his outspoken and critical demeanor pledged to drag the NDC’s flagbearer in the mud if his vision and mission are not evident six months after he is enthroned as the country’s president.

“Mahama says he will recover state assets sold to individuals, let me tell you Mahama, you will win 2024 elections but if assume power I will give you 6 months grace period because you have been a president before. January, February are not part of the grace period. I will start criticizing you from 6th March 2025. Whether the NPP likes it or not Bawumia will lose 2024 elections,” he added.

Captain Smart has also advised Mahama to focus on refreshing and innovative ideas that would persuade Ghanaians to embrace his message.

He emphasised that “Under this Fourth Republic, we have seen Rawlings, Kufuor, Professor Mills, you (referring to Mahama), and Akufo-Addo, and it seems like we are not hearing anything new that will motivate us to follow you. It is the same old story being rehashed. What new message do you have in your second bid to stimulate our interest in your campaign and earn our support?”.

  • I will fix deteriorating football pitches, pay stipends to Premier League players – Mahama

I will fix deteriorating football pitches, pay stipends to Premier League players – Mahama

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has reiterated his commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure in Ghana.

He made this known during discussions with media practitioners at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra on Sunday, July 7, 2024.

Mahama emphasized the necessity of upgrading facilities for track and field events and addressing the decline of football pitches across the nation.

He also underscored the importance of supporting lesser-known sports as part of a comprehensive sports development strategy.

“Let me also assure the sports fraternity that we shall develop our stadium infrastructure. We will fix the deteriorating football pitches, and pay stipends to footballers in the Premier League players like we promised in 2020,” he stated.

During his tenure in 2016, Mahama’s administration oversaw the construction and inauguration of the Cape Coast Stadium, a modern facility boasting a seating capacity of 16,000.

This $35 million project, financed through a grant from China, was a cornerstone of his broader vision to enhance Ghana’s sports infrastructure.

In recent years, Ghana has lacked a world-class venue capable of hosting major sporting events. Concerns have been raised about the deteriorating conditions of the Accra Sports Stadium, Baba Yara Sports Stadium, and Essipong Stadium in Sekondi.

When questioned about plans for a world-class football stadium, Mahama acknowledged that current economic conditions might preclude Ghana from bidding to host tournaments in the near future. Nevertheless, he stressed the critical need for enhanced sports infrastructure under any government.

“We don’t have a world class standard Sports Stadium, we’ve been to several countries to watch matches. I have been to Wembley Stadium before, it is a stadium of a different class from what we have here in the country and often countries are energized to build this stadia if you bid to host something, if there’s an opportunity because you know you will get returns from the investment.

In the current crisis in which we are, i will not stand here and promise that we will build a new stadium, but i have said that under the big push, we intend to spend a certain amount of money over five years on providing a good infrastructure including road, bridges, agro industrial parks and so on and so forth, that could include sports facilities.

If you go to many countries, sports plays a good path in the 24 hour economy and so you find games played at night, but in our part of the country we can have games at night,” he added.

Ghana partners Chinese company to build $450m manganese refinery

CEO of the Minerals Commission, Martin Ayisi, has announced a significant collaboration between the Government of Ghana and a Chinese manganese firm to build a $450 million refinery in Ghana.

This initiative aims to enhance the value-added processing of Ghana’s manganese production.

Addressing the 7th Annual Mining on Top Africa Summit in France on July 3, 2024, Ayisi emphasized that the refinery project is projected to increase Ghana’s revenue from manganese exports from 27% to nearly 40%.

He highlighted the substantial economic impact, forecasting the creation of approximately 400,000 jobs for Ghanaian youth.

Ayisi reiterated the government’s commitment to commence refinery construction by August 2024, demonstrating Ghana’s dedication to modernize its mineral sector under initiatives led by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

Highlighting Ghana’s longstanding history of exporting raw manganese since 1916, Mr Ayisi outlined the current administration’s strategic pivot towards local value addition.

Furthermore, he unveiled plans for the government to establish a lithium mine by late 2024, with operations set to span 22 months, bolstering Ghana’s local processing capabilities and enhancing the value of its mineral resources.

Mr Ayisi advocated for increased local involvement in African mining ventures, urging policies that promote local ownership and equitable distribution of benefits across the mining value chain.

“I must emphasize the importance of stable governance frameworks in fostering long-term partnerships with investors while advising stakeholders to consider a country’s regulatory environment and practices before committing to projects,” he said.

The announcement underscores Ghana’s proactive stance in leveraging its mineral wealth to drive economic expansion and foster sustainable prospects for its populace. It aligns with broader initiatives aimed at promoting industrialization and value addition within Africa’s mining sector.

  • If you claim I am corrupt prosecute me – Mahama dares NPP

If you claim I am corrupt prosecute me – Mahama dares NPP

The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has challenged the ruling government to prosecute him if they possess evidence of his alleged involvement in the Airbus Scandal.

Speaking to the media at the Kempinski Hotel on Sunday, July 7, the former president stated that despite seven years passing, the government has failed to provide any proof of his supposed corrupt activities, dismissing their actions as mere political tactics.

“I mean, a lot of allegations were thrown against me. I’ve been out of office for seven years and seven months. You think that if this government had anything they could stand on with how they hate my persona, they would not have prosecuted me for it? Airbus, the president referred it to the OSP and the OSP is supposed to investigate it, you don’t expect me to investigate myself.

“And so, if they had something to stand on, I would not be standing here today. The same thing with the hotel in Dubai, I challenged them. I said let’s go and find that hotel. I myself am in need of money. We will find it, we will sell it, you give me my small share and the government can take the rest, till today,” Mr. Mahama revealed.

Regarding the allegations related to the Dubai hotel, Mr. Mahama challenged authorities to locate the hotel, stating his willingness to sell it for his share. He emphasized his dedication to combating corruption in Ghana, pledging to uphold high standards of accountability if elected.

Mr. Mahama concluded by reiterating his stance on accountability “I’ve challenged the NPP and the mudslinging and the lies they’ve told about me at every juncture to come up with proof of the allegations and prosecute me. I am an adherent of accountability and I’ve said anybody who serves in public office should be prepared to be accountable. And that accountability must start with myself…

“My commitment is to fight corruption and if I come into office, I’ll hold their administration to the high standard of accountability and those who serve in my administration would also be measured by the same yardstick,” Mr. Mahama assured.

Former President John Mahama was previously linked to allegations of corruption involving kickbacks in the Airbus military equipment contract with Ghana.

BECE format may undergo changes – WAEC

Head of the Public Affairs Unit at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, has indicated that the current format of the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is set to be revised in response to Ghana’s changing needs.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, Mr. Kapi emphasized WAEC’s readiness for the ongoing BECE, assuring that all necessary measures are in place to maintain exam integrity.

Regarding discussions about potential changes to the exam format, Mr. Kapi noted the possibility of adaptation based on Ghana’s growing population and workforce demands.

He stated, “There is always a possibility of changing the format depending on the population and the manpower needs of the country and so it is possible that the exam’s format can change.”

The proposed Free SHS bill, yet to be presented to parliament, aims to abolish the BECE requirement for entry into secondary school. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum clarified that under this bill, SHS certification would become Ghana’s primary academic qualification, replacing the current BECE certification.

Dr. Adutwum highlighted that the education system restructuring would integrate junior high school (JHS) into a six-year secondary education framework, with schools potentially co-locating JHS and SHS students on the same campuses.

Mr. Kapi urged all stakeholders involved in the examination process to refrain from any form of malpractice.

“We have appealed to all the candidates, parents, guardians, teachers, and supervisors, and what we are saying is that we don’t expect the candidates to come to the exam hall with any foreign material and they should do independent work and should not solicit support from anybody within or outside the examination hall. No smart watches or any form of electronic gadget should be brought to the exam hall.”

  • Nominees for Supreme Court not bad, but timing is – Martin Kpebu

Nominees for Supreme Court not bad, but timing is – Martin Kpebu

Legal expert Martin Kpebu has criticized the timing and procedural aspects of the proposal to appoint new Supreme Court justices, describing it as untimely amidst upcoming elections.

Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaba Torkonoo recommended five justices in a May 30, 2024 letter to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo: Justice Angelina Mensah Homiah, Justice Eric Kyei Baffour, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, Justice Cyra Pamela C.A. Koranteng, and Justice Afia Asare Botwe.

Speaking on TV3’s “Key Points” program, Kpebu emphasized that while the nominees were competent, the timing was inappropriate, suggesting such appointments should await the new president after the 2024 elections.

He criticized the Chief Justice for not following due process, noting the requirement for a recommendation from the Judicial Council.

“The nominees are not bad, it is the timing that is bad. These are fine justices, but it is about procedure and timing, this debate is not about competence at all.”

Nelson Dafeamekpor, also a legal practitioner and MP for South Dayi, accused the Chief Justice of overstepping her powers and argued against the need for additional justices, citing the current 15 justices on the Supreme Court.

He criticized the practice of assigning Supreme Court judges to lower courts, suggesting it added unnecessary workload.

“We have 123 High Court judges, we have 32 Court of Appeal judges….Yet, you are bringing Supreme Court judges to high court matters and yet you are complaining that you are inundated with work at the uppermost level.

“So, keep Supreme Court judges at the supreme level, don’t bring them two floors lower,” he stressed.

Senior Advisor to Alan Kyerematen, Nana Ohene Ntow, proposed establishing specialized courts with limited jurisdiction to handle specific cases, aiming to alleviate the Supreme Court’s workload and streamline judicial processes.

I will not scrap the Office of the Special Prosecutor – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has affirmed that he will not abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Instead, he intends to enhance its capabilities if elected as president in the upcoming elections.

Mr. Mahama made this commitment during a press briefing in Accra on Sunday. The OSP was established in 2018 as Ghana’s premier independent anti-corruption institution, aligning with the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

Its mandate includes investigating and prosecuting cases of alleged corruption, recovering proceeds of corrupt activities, and preventing further corruption in both public and private sectors.

Mr. Mahama emphasized that his focus is on strengthening, not dismantling, the OSP.

Additionally, he announced plans for his administration to establish an independent office dedicated to evaluating government procurements exceeding a $5 million threshold or as recommended by Parliament.
