In a notice signed by Ing. Ken Arthur, VRA’s Deputy Chief Executive in Charge of Services, over 40 stakeholders, including the Minister for the Interior and local assemblies within the dam’s catchment areas, were informed of the upcoming engagements in preparation for possible spillage.

“The Volta River Authority (VRA) intends to commence engagements regarding the potential controlled spillage of water from the Akosombo Dam. This precautionary measure is crucial to maintaining the structural integrity of the dam and ensuring the safety of our communities,” the notice read.

It added that “We propose to engage you and the relevant team to discuss the potential implications, mitigative measures and information dissemination.”

    Below is the notice.

On September 15, 2023, VRA began the controlled release of excess water from the Akosombo Dam, resulting in severe flooding in nearby areas, particularly within the Lower Volta region.

The controlled spillage continued until October 30, 2023, when VRA announced its conclusion.

Government sources reported that the flooding affected over 88,000 people and 5,000 homes.

  • I will address corruption impartially – Mahama

I will address corruption impartially – Mahama

Former President, John Mahama has pledged to address corruption allegations impartially if he returns to office.

He emphasized that he would not shield any offenders from investigation, including his own appointees.

During a conference with journalists on Sunday, the NDC flagbearer highlighted that his approach to governance has evolved, and he will no longer adopt a lenient stance on corrupt activities.

“I can assure you, if you believe that I was imbued the father-for-all syndrome, it’s been exorcised. And it’s been exorcised because it is a demand by the people of Ghana.”

“The people of Ghana are asking for accountability and we must create a situation where everybody who agrees to serve must know that he will be held accountable to the people,” he said.

The former President also recounted efforts made during his administration to recover funds from state agencies.

“We retrieved monies from state agencies, so the track record is there,” he asserted.

Reflecting on his previous tenure, Mahama cited the controversial GYEEDA (Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency) report as evidence of his dedication to combating corruption.

“Some of the people involved [in GYEEDA case] went to court to restrain the Attorney General and the court processes took forever. There were others where there was the prosecution of my own colleague and friend, Abuga Pele. The Attorney General put him before courts and he was jailed. It was recently that President Akufo-Addo granted him amnesty,” he added.

“So the will to fight corruption was there,” Mahama stated, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in government.

Earlier, he criticized the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what he described as an unprecedented level of corruption.

According to him, the manner in which the Akufo-Addo-led administration runs the country leaves much to be desired.

“What we have now, obviously never and should never be a yardstick for governance. My goal is to launch a renewed fight against corruption,” he said on Sunday.

My appointees will be barred from buying state assets – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has firmly declared that all his future government appointees will be prohibited from purchasing any state assets.

“If you agree to serve, you must serve and not engage in other side businesses or activities. You must not go and buy state properties. Anybody serving in my government will not be allowed to buy a state asset. The former President stressed that his next administration will depart from past practices, promising to enforce a strict code of conduct aimed at curbing extravagance among public officials.

“We will cut out waste, we will eliminate opulence, and we will introduce a code of conduct for public appointees, especially political appointees, regarding how they behave in terms of their modesty and humility. Your appointment to that office is an opportunity to serve, not an opportunity to lord it over the people,” Mr. Mahama added.

“And so, our political appointees should change their attitude, and that is what we are going to insist on. We will appoint people who are modest, humble, and open to the people, and they will undertake actions that will improve the lives of our young people. Therefore, we are going to hold them to a higher standard of service than has been the case in the past.”

I didn’t register for GWR cook-a-thon – Chef Smith confesses

Chef Smith has revealed that he did not register for a cook-a-thon attempt with the Guinness World Records (GWR).

In an interview with GH One TV he clarified his stance amid recent discussions about his involvement with the renowned record-keeping organization.

When asked why he proceeded with the cook-a-thon without approval, Chef Smith responded, “Cooking is not just my passion; it’s my calling”.

According to him, “I have read a lot about Guinness World Records and it’s an application process. When you apply, they will give you an application reference that would enable you to know who is the current record holder,” Chef Smith explained.

“I’ve read all that, and got to know the rules and guidelines, but I don’t have an application with Guinness World Records.”

In a statement released on Thursday, July 4, Amadia Shopping Centre announced a three-year partnership with Chef Smith to support his record-breaking attempt.

The shopping center, spearheaded by Mrs. Nana Ama Duodu, funded and organized the month-long cook-a-thon.

However, following the record attempt, Amadia’s management encountered challenges in communicating with Chef Smith regarding video uploads and responses from GWR.

The statement noted Chef Smith’s failure to inform Amadia Shopping Centre about a planned press conference to announce a potential GWR certificate, which violated the contract’s stipulations granting the sponsor the right of first refusal for post-event activities.

Despite multiple attempts to seek clarification, Chef Smith’s management remained unresponsive.

  • We won’t let you, NDC destroy our reputation – NPP to Kwesi Pratt

We won’t let you, NDC destroy our reputation – NPP to Kwesi Pratt

Tensions flared between Dennis Miracles, a member of the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia campaign team and Editor-in-Chief of the Insight newspaper, Kwesi Pratt, during a conversation on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show on Friday, July 5.

The heated exchange centered on Mr. Pratt’s critique of the New Patriotic Party’s choice of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as their running mate for the upcoming December elections.

Mr. Pratt opened the discussion by raising concerns voiced by MP Andy Appiah-Kubi about Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s suitability for the role, emphasizing the need for a candidate who resonates deeply with grassroots constituents.

Hon. Andy Appiah-Kubi remarked, “If it were my decision to make, I wouldn’t select him. He is not my preference… I would prefer someone who is transparent with the people on the ground, capable of securing votes, willing to align with the presidency, and instrumental in bridging the gap between Parliament and the Executive.”

Earlier in the program, Dennis Miracles criticized Kwesi Pratt for what he saw as double standards, accusing Mr. Pratt of pretending to be neutral while secretly supporting the NDC and trying to influence young people against NAPO and the NPP.

Later, the seasoned journalist challenged Dennis Miracles regarding his claim of an endorsement by a professor from the University of Cape Coast who had collaborated with NPP running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO).

In response, Dennis Miracles passionately defended Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s credentials and referenced endorsements, sparking a vigorous debate.

Accusations of bias and misrepresentation were traded back and forth, with Dennis Miracles highlighting Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s track record of compassionate leadership through various social initiatives.

“In fact, if you look at those who backed the NDC in their propaganda, misinformation, and bias against the NPP under President Kufuor, Uncle Kwesi is among them, and we will not tolerate it… The new NPP will not allow anyone to deceive us. We will present the facts. We will address the issues,” he declared during the “Kokrokoo” morning show on Peace FM.

Discussing the qualities of Dr. Opoku Prempeh, Dennis responded, “Only a compassionate leader could decide to sponsor the education of 100,000 children from low-income families. Only a compassionate leader would do that. Only a compassionate leader would offer free medical treatment to children under 18 with kidney problems. Only a compassionate leader would do that.

“Only a compassionate leader would recognize that eliminating teacher and nurse allowances would harm the less fortunate; only a compassionate leader would do that. Therefore, Uncle Kwesi is completely mistaken in downplaying NAPO’s reputation as a compassionate leader. He is mistaken!”

“We will not allow him to deceive us. We will evaluate NAPO for ourselves… Ghanaians will not be fooled by this; we have seen this tactic before. He only speaks out when the NPP is in power,” he retorted to Kwesi Pratt.

The exchange became increasingly intense, punctuated by interruptions and pointed rebuttals, culminating in Mr. Pratt reproaching Dennis Miracles for what he perceived as disrespectful behavior during the discussion.

“The professor from the International Department of the University of Cape Coast did not claim to speak on behalf of UTAG or NAGRAT; he expressed his personal opinion. However, Miracles, while discussing the professor’s comments, added that all teacher unions supported his statement,” Pratt clarified.

However, the NPP activist interjected, asserting that Mr. Pratt was misrepresenting his statements.

“I did not say that. I am here; let me clarify what I said,” he protested.

Enraged by Dennis’ interruption, the seasoned journalist sought to silence him and commanded, “Young man, be quiet and let me finish.”

However, equally incensed, Miracles refused to yield and accused Mr. Pratt of distorting his words.

“I did not say that. Let me correct you because you are lying. I did not say what you are accusing me of. I will not sit here and allow you to lie to my face; it will not work,” he responded.

Clearly provoked by the disrespectful behavior and frequent interruptions from the “youthful” NPP activist, Kwesi Pratt sternly reprimanded him.

“Hey, listen, you need to stop… I will not tolerate your misbehavior in this studio… You cannot behave this way here… every participant invited to join a discussion (on Kokrokoo) must conduct themselves respectfully, without insults… but your conduct is completely unacceptable… you are being disrespectful. You are not my equal,” a charged Kwesi Pratt declared.

Petition to sack Ken Attafuah turned down by NIA governing board

The Governing Board of the National Identification Authority (NIA) has firmly rejected a petition from the Public Service Workers Union (PSWU) of the NIA, which called for the removal of Executive Secretary Prof. Ken Attafuah over alleged unfair labor practices.

Signed by 920 staff members and submitted to President Akufo-Addo on Monday, July 1, 2024, the petition accused Prof. Attafuah of unfair labor practices and claimed significant staff support for his removal.

However, the NIA Governing Board dismissed these allegations and expressed strong confidence in Prof. Attafuah’s leadership.

In a statement released on Thursday, July 5, 2024, the Governing Board stated: “The Governing Board wishes to express its complete confidence in the Executive Secretary’s integrity, competence, experience, and resourcefulness in the performance of his duties, including the advancement of the interests of NIA workers and roundly describes the petition as baseless and unwarranted.”

The Board criticized the PSWU for bypassing internal grievance procedures and directly petitioning the President, deeming the union’s actions premature and inappropriate.

The Board emphasized that internal mechanisms should be utilized to address any grievances before seeking external intervention.

“As stated by the National Labour Commission (NLC) at a hearing on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, into ongoing negotiations between the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Industrial and Commercial Workers’ Union (ICU), the NIA Division of the PSWU (NIA PSWU) has no right to petition His Excellency the President to remove the Executive Secretary without exhausting internal procedures; the NLC declared the conduct of the NIA PSWU as both ‘illegal and completely out of line,’” the statement added.

The Governing Board urged all NIA staff to maintain faith in the leadership and join forces to achieve their common goals.

“The Governing Board shares the desire of the ICU and NIA PSWU and indeed all staff of NIA for improvement of their conditions of service and will continue to work with the Executive Secretary and Management and the unions to advance this common purpose in concert with other appropriate agencies of state.

The Governing Board urges all staff to place their trust in the NIA leadership and work together to achieve this shared objective.

  • World Bank supports COCOBOD with US$100m to rehabilitate cocoa farms

World Bank supports COCOBOD with US$100m to rehabilitate cocoa farms

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has secured a US$100 million financing facility from the World Bank to rehabilitate old cocoa farms across six districts in the country, including Assin Fosu, New Edubiase, Nkawkaw, and Juaso.

This four-year project will support the cutting down of cocoa trees that are over 20 years old, prepare the land, and provide planting materials such as seedlings and suckers.

COCOBOD’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Joseph Boahen Aidoo, announced this during a field trip to farms in Assin Fosu, Central Region, on July 4, 2024.

The visit aimed to assess the work of extension officers, evaluate government interventions for farmers, and educate them on best practices to increase cocoa yields.

Mr. Aidoo explained that while the trees to be cut down are not diseased, they have outlived their lifespan, with some being over 30 years old, becoming ‘moribund.’

He emphasized that cocoa trees over 20 years old are unproductive and require rehabilitation to rejuvenate the farms and increase production.

“Once cocoa hits 20 years and above, it has spent its life span, and from that stage, you realise that it bears no fruits, no pods, and the flowers don’t come, yet the farmer would be maintaining such a farm, and this is not productive,” he said.

COCOBOD will support farmers with plantain suckers, labor for planting, and provide extension officers to assist with farm management for optimal yields. Mr. Aidoo noted that without such support, farmers would struggle to achieve the desired outcomes.

He highlighted a similar project implemented with support from the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the Cocoa Rehabilitation Programme, which focused on ending Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus Disease (CSSVD).

During the visit, farmers urged the government to expedite road construction in cocoa-growing areas to reduce post-harvest losses and improve transport of produce. They also called for more extension officers, recognizing their valuable training and assistance.

Nana Kweku Appotoi IV of Assin Nyankomase expressed concern over deplorable roads in cocoa-growing communities, urging COCOBOD to address this issue. He also committed to preventing illegal miners from taking over cocoa farms and encouraged farmers to adhere to best practices and share their knowledge.

Mr. Aidoo assured farmers that the government would allocate funds to fix roads in cocoa-growing communities following cocoa price hikes. He advised against growing cocoa in sandy and clay soils, burning weeds, and selling cocoa branches for firewood. Instead, he recommended using these branches as mulch and avoiding harmful weedicides like ’round-up’ and glyphosate, which damage soil health and reduce crop yields.

Since 2020, COCOBOD has procured about 100,000 motorized slashers and pruners to help clear cocoa farms and increase production, urging farmers to access them from district offices.

Mr. Aidoo also noted that COCOBOD has improved the extension officer-to-farmer ratio from one-to-three thousand to one-to-600, nearing the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) international standard of one officer-to-500 farmers.

  • This is why soldiers failed to overthrow J. J. Rawlings in 1983

This is why soldiers failed to overthrow J. J. Rawlings in 1983

Retired Ghana Armed Forces officer Corporal, Matthew Adabuga, has provided insights into Jerry John Rawlings’ declining popularity during his tenure in the 1980s.

In a JoyNews interview, Corporal Adabuga (rtd) revealed that Rawlings’ image suffered significantly following the murder of three High Court judges in 1981.

This incident sparked widespread discontent within the Ghana Armed Forces, leading to multiple coup attempts against the Rawlings administration.

One of the most notable and nearly successful attempts occurred on June 19, 1983, when a group of soldiers, aided by colleagues from Togo, nearly ousted Rawlings. According to Corporal Adabuga (rtd), the rebels secured crucial installations across the country and came close to taking control of strategic points, including Gates 1 and 3 of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation.

However, the coup ultimately failed due to a lack of centralized leadership and conflicting interests among the factions involved.

Corporal Adabuga (rtd) explained that internal power struggles diverted attention from the collective goal of overthrowing Rawlings. This discord led to tactical errors, allowing the Rawlings regime to regroup and regain control.

He emphasized that once the rebels engaged in infighting, they lost their strategic advantage and failed to maintain cohesive military tactics. This internal strife enabled Rawlings’ administration to consolidate its position and thwart the coup attempt successfully.

“We used Circle and passed through Kanda, so we took the soldiers on guard duties by surprise. They were expecting us from the front, but we took them from the back. We took over Gates 1 and 3 of the Ghana Broadcasting Company (GBC), so it was just easy for us.

“Giwa and the others were chasing after the soldiers in a bid to capture Gate 2. As they were running there, they came across the studios and decided to announce it. Some group decided to announce on behalf of one Colonel who was far in Kejebi. Giwa and others were also surprised that the Colonel was not part of the plan, so they also rallied and wrote something to announce.

“A melee ensued because they were fighting among themselves in the GBC studio. They were fighting and preventing each other from announcing it, but Giwa’s brother won and announced it.

“The lack of discipline and leadership led to the failure. Those who were to take over Gate 2 of GBC failed to apply the basic tactics we had learned and ought to apply. They also failed to send a search party to mop up those that were cut off in the operations. They also failed to secure the area, and it was because there were vested interests,” he said.

Decentralize Agriculture, Land Ministries – Okyenhene to govt

The Okyenhene, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has urged the government to relocate certain ministries to various regions to promote balanced development across the country.

He pointed out that many people are compelled to move to Accra due to job scarcity, primarily because most government offices are centralized there.

Specifically, he proposed that ministries such as Food and Agriculture, Lands and Natural Resources, and the Forestry Commission should be decentralized and spread across different regions.

During a public lecture at the University of Ghana, he questioned the rationale behind keeping these ministries in Accra, emphasizing the potential for creating new townships, developing real estate, fostering commerce, and enabling people to work closer to their homes.

Highlighting the disparity in economic opportunities, he emphasized the need to include rural populations in the national economy by distributing governmental functions.

Regarding the issue of illegal mining, he called for a concerted effort to combat the problem effectively, stressing the urgency of implementing more stringent measures.

Speaking at a public lecture at the University of Ghana, he quizzed “Over 67 years, what is the Ministry of Agriculture doing in Accra, what is the Ministry of Lands and Resources doing in Accra? What is the Forestry Commission doing in Accra?”

“I have made suggestions that move these ministries and spread them all across different regions this way we can create new townships, real estate will be developed, commerce will go on and people will stay where they are to work.

“How can we build a national economy that excludes 75% of our population who live in the rural areas wallowing in poverty and hopelessness? They have no chance. There is no job.

“If the government is going to be the biggest employer, I suggest we bring these ministries,” he said.

  • Africa must prioritize MoMo interoperability than single currency – Bawumia

Africa must prioritize MoMo interoperability than single currency – Bawumia

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is advocating for a policy shift from the adoption of a single currency among African countries to interconnected payment platforms, including interoperable Mobile Money services.

He believes this approach would better bridge the financial divide and boost intra-Africa trade.

While African leaders have traditionally focused on macroeconomic stability as a key factor for a common currency, Dr. Bawumia argues that the continent’s inability to meet economic convergence criteria highlights the need for financial interoperability systems to achieve seamless payment regimes.

“Making mobile money interoperable allows our citizens across the continent to trade seamlessly and so this is where I believe as African countries we need to focus on. One of the common problems of achieving a common currency was the difficulty of our respective countries in achieving the macro-economic convergence.”

“The idea of a common currency which came in 1963 has really been overtaken by the digital payment age that today you can think about mobile money as a common currency. If we make it interoperable, we don’t need to have the common currency before we get the benefits.”

Dr. Bawumia made these remarks as the guest speaker at the opening of the Continental Mobile Interoperability Symposium organized by the Africa Prosperity Network in Accra.

“I believe that If we are serious about it, we can work towards mobile money Interoperability at the continental stage and, therefore, we should move away in this regard from the macro-economic convergence criteria to digital payment convergence criteria,” he added.

The event, themed “Scaling-up interoperability, Using Mobile Money to Buy and Sell.

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, acknowledged that achieving broad financial sector inclusion and inter-trade in Africa hinges on a harmonized regulatory framework and partnerships among digital space players.

  • Ghanaians to utilize 4G as primary source of mobile phone connectivity by 2033 – Report

4G networks are projected to remain the primary connectivity choice in Ghana through 2033, driven by the widespread affordability of smartphones.

Despite the introduction of 5G technology, Fitch Solutions predicts that only 21.2% of connections will adopt 5G by then.

The dominance of 4G is largely due to the accessibility and lower cost of 4G-compatible handsets compared to their 5G counterparts.

To manage potential over-investment risks associated with traditional licensing models, Ghana is moving towards establishing a national wholesale 5G network.

Led by Minister of Communications and Digitalisation Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, this initiative aims to consolidate network infrastructure and avoid duplication of resources.

The consortium responsible for building this network includes local entities, Indian partners, and technology leaders like Nokia and Microsoft.

The project aims to enhance digital inclusion across sectors such as education, healthcare, machine-to-machine communication, and payment services.

“We are also watching similar developments in Malaysia, where the Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) project has fallen behind schedule. Established in March 2021, the project is being led by a special-purpose vehicle company owned by the government, which is collaborating with six mobile operators and service providers that have proved reluctant to participate. A change in government, issues with the vendor selection process and a decision to establish a second wholesale 5G network have further clouded the long-term sustainability outlook for the project”, it pointed out.

Despite the anticipated benefits, Fitch Solutions highlights challenges seen in other markets where similar wholesale open access models have struggled.

For example, Mexico’s Altan Redes 5G network faced financial difficulties, while Malaysia’s Digital Nasional Berhad project encountered delays and sustainability concerns.

In Ghana, the Next-Gen Infrastructure Company (NGIC), comprising Telecel Ghana, AT Ghana, Radisys (owned by Reliance Jio), Tech Mahindra, Ascend Digital, and K-Nat, has been licensed to deploy and operate shared 5G infrastructure.

This consortium plans to invest $145 million in capital expenditures over the next three years. However, there remains a need for transparency in the vendor selection process, particularly regarding the involvement of MTN, which currently holds a dominant 74.5% share of the mobile market as of March 2024.

  • Power consumes significant amount of our operational expenditures – AngloGold

Power consumes significant amount of our operational expenditures – AngloGold

Principal Electrical and Energy Advisor at AngloGold Ashanti Africa Business Unit (ABU), Kisman Eghan, has expressed significant concern over the high cost of power for mining operations, noting that it accounts for between 15% and 40% of a mine’s operational expenses.

During a recent panel discussion at the 17th West Africa Mining and Power Expo, Eghan highlighted that a typical 200,000 ounces per year mine spends between $20 million to $40 million annually on energy, which he described as substantial.

He attributed this high cost to the complex equipment used in mining operations.

Mr Eghan also raised issues regarding the availability and reliability of power, particularly in central and northern regions of Ghana where mines face frequent interruptions.

“In our world, for instance, the availability of power, where we sit in the central portion of town, until recently that the KWTV was operationalised we used to have a series of interruptions which is affecting a lot of mines there”.

“So, generation…even the location of the generation itself. Most of Ghana – we have all the generation – located in the southern sector, which does not help most of the mines in the central and northern portion of the country”, he stated.

“So that is one. And then the reliability side, which as far as we are concerned, the transmission lines.

“There has been a programme about two, three years ago, where I’m involved. I think we contributed close to 850,000 to help. And this is all in an attempt to improve the reliability of power to our mines”, he added.

He noted challenges related to the location of power generation facilities predominantly in the southern sector, which hinders supply to mining operations elsewhere in the country.

“It’s a lot, it’s about $110,000. So, if I have one interruption and it takes me three hours to come back, that three hours is equivalent to about $350,000. Now imagine I’m in the central portion and I have seven or 10 of such interruptions in a day. We are talking about $350,000 multiplied by 10, $3.5 million dollars. So, you see where we’re coming from”, he mentioned.

“It’s a lot of burden on us. That’s why we are ready to even assist the utilities. Is there anything we can do to help you so that the reliability level will be okay for us? So that cost availability, reliability will be better”, he added.

Addressing the intermittent power supply, Eghan emphasized that even a one-hour power loss can cost a mine approximately 45 ounces of production, translating to about $110,000 in financial losses.

For processing plants, which can take up to three hours to resume operations after an outage, the financial impact can be as high as $350,000 per interruption.

Multiply these interruptions over a day, and the costs escalate significantly, posing a substantial burden on mining operations.

In response to these challenges, mining firms like AngloGold Ashanti are exploring partnerships with utility companies to mitigate costs and enhance power reliability.

Eghan cited their initiative to build a 100 megawatts solar power plant costing $125 million as part of efforts to reduce emissions and operational costs.

However, he stressed the need for collaborative efforts with utilities to make such projects feasible.

Eghan welcomed initiatives like the Energy Sector Recovery Programme, which aims to address debts and improve power reliability, ultimately benefiting mining operations by reducing costs and enhancing operational efficiency. He expressed optimism that these measures would create a conducive environment for increased mining activities in Ghana.

“That is huge! And also due to the complexities of the sort of equipment that we use”, he disclosed at a recent panel discussion at the 17th West Africa Mining and Power Expo.

  • Ghana named 5th African country with significant lithium resources

Ghana named 5th African country with significant lithium resources

Lithium development projects are poised to expand in Africa, with Ghana ranking 5th on the continent in terms of lithium deposits.

Fitch Solutions anticipates the commencement of production at the Ewoyaa project mine in 2025.

Over the next decade, mining companies are expected to increase exploration efforts in other regional markets such as Namibia, Mali, Ghana, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

“In the coming decade, we expect mining companies to broaden exploration activities in other markets in the region including Namibia, Mali, Ghana and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). However, we expect that resource nationalism, legal difficulties and political instability in the region will pose a threat to the development of new lithium projects”, the London-based firm said.

However, the London-based firm notes that challenges like resource nationalism, legal complexities, and political instability may hinder new lithium projects’ development.

In June 2023, Australian firm Atlantic Lithium disclosed findings from the definitive feasibility study (DFS), projecting that the Ewoyaa site could yield 3.6 million metric tonnes (mnt) of spodumene concentrate over a 12-year mine life.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo leads Africa with abundant lithium resources, followed by Mali, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions respectively.

Lithium, a crucial raw material for transitioning to a green economy, is expected to attract foreign investment into Africa as major economies seek to secure lithium for their battery supply chains.

“We expect mining firms to broaden exploration activities to Africa in markets such as Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mali, Ghana and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). This includes all African markets with known reserves, those that are current lithium producers, such as Zimbabwe, as well as those with ongoing lithium developments”, Fitch Solutions added.

Distance yourself from Akufo-Addo if you want to win December polls – Dr. Arthur to Bawumia

Dr. Arthur Kennedy, a notable member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has advised the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to distance himself from President Akufo-Addo in order to secure victory in the upcoming December elections.

On July 4, the NPP’s National Council confirmed Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, widely known as NAPO, as the running mate for Dr. Bawumia in the 2024 general elections.

In an interview with Joshua Kodjo Mensah on GHOne TV, Dr. Kennedy, a medical doctor and former NPP Presidential candidate hopeful, expressed his belief that voters might reject Dr. Bawumia if he campaigns on continuing President Akufo-Addo’s legacy.

“He knows that the driver is heading in the wrong direction, so if the mate gets in the driver’s seat, he should change direction. If I were him, I wouldn’t want the President anywhere near my campaign.”

“If he wants to win, he will be. If he doesn’t want to win, then, of course, the President was his godfather who blessed him with this nomination, and the President will lead him to defeat,” he added.

“I will boldly tell the people of Ghana about the mistakes that have been made, failing to protect the public purse, not fighting galamsey, the myriad alphabet soup of corruption, judicial malfeasance, undermining the integrity of state agencies, and pledge that I will forge a new path.”

Let’s put the past behind us – NPP Manhyia South Chair to Wontumi

The Manhyia South constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Adjei Mensah Ofori Atta, (Chairman Tom Tom), has extended an apology to the Ashanti Regional chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi).

This comes in light of comments made amid the recent verbal clashes between the camps of Chairman Wontumi and Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia South.

In an interview with Pure FM, Ofori Atta stressed the importance of both factions resolving their differences to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in winning the 2024 elections.

He believes that the appointment of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate to Dr. Bawumia should mark the end of internal divisions.

Ofori Atta expressed his readiness to collaborate with Chairman Wontumi and the regional campaign team to secure victory for the NPP in the upcoming elections. He publicly apologized, stating, “We have resolved every issue. I want to leverage your platform to send a message to our regional chairman, Wontumi, that if I said something wrong during the chaotic moments, I’m sorry, and he should forgive me. I have already met him and spoken to him, but I believe I have to make it public.

“If we don’t unite and support him to deliver in the Ashanti Region, then we have no business going into the elections. The one thing we need going into this election is unity, and I believe we should all work for it. As the constituency chairman, I have no option but to support the regional chairman. Let me repeat once again that if I said something to him and it didn’t sit well with him, I apologize. He should forgive me, and let’s all unite,” he said.

Mr Ofori Atta’s comments follow the confirmation of Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, as the running mate of the NPP candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the 2024 elections.

On Thursday, July 5, 2024, the National Council of the NPP endorsed Dr. Bawumia’s recommendation to have NAPO as his running mate.

NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who described Dr. Opoku Prempeh as “charismatic” and “bold,” endorsed his position.

“I am happy to report that after the necessary consideration, the NC unanimously endorses Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate of Dr. Bawumia,” the General Secretary of the NPP is quoted as having said at a press conference on Thursday.

“He is a charismatic, bold leader who excelled at the Ministry of Education and at Energy,” he said.

Senior Presidential Advisor, Yaw Osafo-Maafo, has raised concerns about the quality of Ghana’s educational system, questioning why the country still faces numerous issues despite having a high number of educated individuals.

He pointed out several problems, such as poor sanitation, recent severe flooding, and the frequent damage to school roofs during rains.

Speaking at the International Educators Summit 2024, themed “Reimagining Education for the Future We Seek: Africa and the World in Dialogue,“We have a change, but that change must be manifested into solving the problems facing this country, as we go along. So, we should begin to think through education as a problem-solver for the nation.

“This is my simple message to the minister of education [Dr Yaw Osei-Adutwm], and the whole educational system. We have a myriad of problems facing us in our education system.

“Our education system and the content should aim directly at resolving these problems, simple problems like sanitation, flooding,” he opined.

Even the court is in court over their lands – Ablakwa

Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has stated that Ghanaian courts are currently embroiled in legal disputes over land that they possess.

Mr Ablakwa highlighted the complexities and challenges faced by the judiciary in handling cases where government actions impact land ownership.

Speaking on Metro TV he indicated that the Minister of Local Government and Decentralisation, Martin Kwaku Adjei-Mensah Korsah has become helpless due to government’s actions.

“So when we talk about the state capture, judges have to run to their colleague judges to save them. You wonder what is happening is there no adult in the room. Look at the Local Minister, he is helpless, he wants to protect the land. Look at this Cantoments land, government took one out of two containers. The local has to run to goverment. Now the court is in court with the government. What is going on in this country?,” he added.

In recent weeks, the MP has leveled accusations against government officials, alleging state capture.

Ablakwa specifically cited additional instances of government selling state properties, purportedly including assets belonging to the Ghana Prisons Service and the Department of Parks and Gardens.

Meanwhile, the MP has affirmed his unwavering commitment to combating state capture and government corruption, asserting that no amount of intimidation would deter him.

I was expecting a female as Bawumia’s running mate – Naa Torshie

Former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Irene Naa Torshie Addo has reacted to the unanimous approval of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the running mate by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The accomplished lawyer expressed disappointment at the absence of a female candidate chosen for such a prominent role as running mate.

Speaking on Okay FM, Naa Torshie Tetteh, who was herself a contender for the position, voiced her expectations that the party would have chosen a deserving female candidate to join Dr. Bawumia on the presidential campaign.

Despite her disappointment, she expressed confidence in the NPP’s capability to alter the narrative in future internal selections and elect a female candidate for such a role.

“I believe that it is time for a woman to take up a leadership position, that kind of high position. That one I must say that I was hoping if even it wasn’t me, another female candidate would have been selected because NPP is known for their wide pool of intelligent and well-learned women. I will say I was disappointed because I was expecting a female to be made a running mate,” she said on Okay FM.

Naa Torshie Tetteh, however, stated that she accepts the party’s decision gracefully and will lend her support to ensure the NPP’s success in the upcoming elections.

She extended congratulations to Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh on his selection and endorsement as the running mate, asserting that he deserves the role and that the NEC’s decision is a step in the right direction.

  • Current Akufo-Addo’s Cabinet seem to have weak research capacity – Bright Simons

Current Akufo-Addo’s Cabinet seem to have weak research capacity – Bright Simons

Vice President of IMANI Africa, Bright Simons, has alleged that the cabinet under president Akufo-Addo’s administration lack adequate research capacity.

According to Mr Simons, this deficiency has allowed ministers to advance optimistic narratives without adequate factual support.

Taking to the X platform, Mr Simons also highlighted that the Energy and Finance Ministers successfully persuaded the government to allocate over $83 million from Ghana’s already strained finances to host the new Africa Energy Bank (AEB).

“Despite Ghana’s dire finances, the Energy & Finance Ministers convinced the Prez & govt to divert precious scarce dollars (>$83m) in an ill-timed adventure to host the new Africa Energy Bank claiming that Ghana was in “pole position” for the bid. Well, Ghana lost out.

Same thing happened with the foreign debt restructuring. The Finance Minister has convinced the President & Govt that it will lead to more cash inflows & stronger Cedi. Truth is: restructuring is still NOT done & when over it will lead to MORE outflows & pressures on the Cedi.

“Both cases point to one thing: the current Cabinet & presidential administration seem to have weak research capacity making it easy for ministers to get their way with rosy narratives. Case in point: 5G. Also: e-levy was promoted as an alternative to IMF & Cabinet bought it,” he wrote.

Mr Simons’ remarks came following Nigeria’s announcement as the chosen host country for the AEB as reported by its oil minister on Thursday.

Nigeria’s successful bid was endorsed at an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers of the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO), positioning Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s energy sector.

Minister of State Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to the AEB initiative, citing the country’s ratification of the bank’s charter and a $100 million investment, which exceeds the required $83.33 million for member states.

The Africa Energy Bank, a collaboration between Afrexim Bank and APPO, aims to fund energy projects across the continent and facilitate its transition to sustainable energy sources.

Algeria, Benin, and Ghana were also in contention to host the AEB, after Ivory Coast and South Africa did not meet the necessary requirements.

Ghana recorded 610 cases of missing persons from 2021-2023 – Report

A recent report by a non-profit organization, Missing Ghana, collaborating with the Ghana Police Service and Department of Social Welfare, reveals that 610 individuals, predominantly children, have been reported missing in Ghana since 2021.

Former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Nana Oye Bampoe-Addo, highlighted significant deficiencies in Ghana’s child protection efforts.

Speaking on TV3’s Newday, she expressed concern over the absence of a dedicated unit within security agencies for missing children, leading to inadequate data on these critical issues.

“Regarding security, it seems that our security agencies do not have a unit specifically focused on missing children or child protection. Additionally, we lack a strategic framework to address this issue effectively,” said the former minister.

“I am uncertain if such a unit exists; we know about the trafficking unit, but even they lack sufficient data. Organizations like Missing Ghana provide vital data that is missing from our local agencies. For example, between 2021 and 2023, 610 people went missing, with the majority being children.”

Security Analyst Richard Kumadoe, also on TV3’s Newday, expressed concern about the disjointed efforts in addressing missing children, labeling it a growing public safety issue.

“The community helps the police address some of these issues. There has been a disjointed effort to find solutions to why children go missing, resulting in increasing numbers. This situation undoubtedly raises public safety concerns.”

Given these troubling statistics, security experts advise the public to take proactive measures.

They recommend educating children on personal information and emergency contacts, establishing safe zones and protocols, utilizing technology such as GPS trackers and safety apps, and maintaining vigilance in public spaces as crucial precautions.

GHS to deliver 500K COVID-19 vaccine doses to adults aged 18 and above

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has initiated a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign scheduled throughout July 2024, commencing from July 3rd.

During this campaign, the GHS aims to administer a minimum of 500,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccines to all individuals aged 18 years and above, intensifying efforts to bolster vaccination rates.

Vaccination teams will operate at hospitals, clinics, and health centers, ensuring accessibility to COVID-19 vaccines.

Additionally, teams will conduct outreach activities at residences, markets, places of worship, workplaces, and other venues to facilitate widespread access.

According to GHS, COVID-19 vaccination is now a routine for adults, available at all vaccination sites nationwide. Despite progress, significant portions of the population remain either partially vaccinated or unvaccinated, posing ongoing vulnerability to the disease.

Children under 15 years, not eligible for COVID-19 vaccination under national policy, rely on adult vaccination to indirectly safeguard them through achieving herd immunity.

Director-General of GHS, Dr. Patrick Kumah Aboagye, highlighted, “As of June 28, 2024, a total of 29,191,110 doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered to the population, and about 56% of the target population had completed the primary series.

“As the country strives to increase population immunity and break the transmission of the disease, within the context of a gradual increase in cases, it is imperative that all unvaccinated and partially vaccinated individuals are reached to prevent any potential surge in disease incidence and associated ill health and/or death,” a statement signed by Dr. Patrick Kumah Aboagye, the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service.

“In the recent past (early April – May 2024), the increased number of COVID-19 cases in Ghana is ample evidence that the disease is not over. We are, therefore, calling on all stakeholders to support this effort by making sure that all eligible persons avail themselves to be vaccinated with the primary series and the boosters to ensure maximum protection. Protect yourself, protect your family, get vaccinated.”

Deputy Minister of Works and Housing, Dr. Prince Hamid Armah, has accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of launching a campaign to smear the reputation of Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

Dr. Armah, who represents Kwesimintsim in Parliament, believes the NDC’s efforts stem from their apprehension over Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s capabilities and experience.

He asserted that the opposition fears Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s strong character and deep political insight, which he views as crucial complements to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on their party’s ticket.

In an interview with GHOne News, Dr. Armah remarked, “I think the NDC is afraid of the personality of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh complementing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to complete our ticket. They are just afraid. They know that the Minister for Energy comes with a strong character, a deep understanding of our political landscape, and a demonstrable record in public service. In all his endeavors in the public service space, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has excelled”.

He added: “I worked under him at the Ministry of Education, and I can tell you that if you want someone who is results-oriented, then Dr. Opoku Prempeh is the one.

“All those criticisms from the NDC are normal. It is understandable that people make such comments. I know Dr. Opoku Prempeh very well. People often confuse confidence with arrogance due to our cultural context, where timidity is seen as respect and humility, while confidence is often mistaken for arrogance. The NDC is trying to label him as arrogant, but it will not succeed.”

Dr. Armah concluded by dismissing the NDC’s tactics, confident that their efforts to tarnish Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s image would not succeed.

Bawumia and NAPO make a very good pair – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has expressed his complete support for the presidential candidate for New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh.

He strongly beliefs in the duo will increase NPP’s chances of winning the 2024 elections.

There had been widespread speculation that President Akufo-Addo opposed NAPO’s selection as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate for the 2024 elections.

Reports suggested that President Akufo-Addo had reluctantly endorsed Bawumia’s choice during a meeting where he voiced his reservations about the decision.

However, in his first public comments on the matter, a visibly pleased President Akufo-Addo stated that he believes Bawumia and NAPO will give the NPP the best chance of retaining power.

He expressed his excitement and confidence that on January 7, 2025, he would be handing over to Bawumia, not Mahama.

“The National Council has just endorsed the nomination of Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate. The NPP has an excellent ticket, and we are going to win with this ticket. The feeling is good, and they make a very good pair,” he said.

Proposed legislative price controls on cement could lead to shortage – Manufacturers

The CEO of the Chamber of Cement Manufacturers have warned that a proposed Legislative Instrument (LI) aimed at controlling cement prices, if approved, could severely reduce production.

Dr. George Dawson-Amoah said, “If you force a producer to sell at that price, and it’s not profitable, there’s market distortion.

“He/she would not produce, and if they don’t produce, then there will be a shortage. Is Ghana ready for a cement shortage?”

In an interview with George Wiafe on PM Express Business, he underscored the capital-intensive nature of the cement sector, suggesting that enforced price reductions could deter future investments.

“If you’re going to force me to sell at a price that is not profitable, investment will be curtailed. Don’t forget, we have workers and other costs, so the workers will be affected,” he explained.

Dr. Dawson-Amoah criticized the government, accusing it of prioritizing political expediency over economic prudence in an election year.

“The thought that went into regulating cement prices is more politically motivated than economic. But we need to ask if Ghana is ready for it. Economically, Ghana is not ready for it,” he stated.

He also questioned the timing of the proposal, wondering why it wasn’t initiated earlier, rather than during an election season.

These remarks follow prolonged disagreements between the Chamber and the sector ministry regarding the proposed LI.

Manufacturers have expressed concerns that the instrument fails to address the underlying factors driving up cement prices.

While the Trade Minister has presented the LI to Parliament for consideration, the Chamber CEO expressed disappointment over inadequate consultation with stakeholders.

In contrast, Prof. Alex Dodoo, Director General of the Ghana Standards Board, advocated for regulation in the industry.

He disputed claims that the directive was politically motivated, emphasizing the need for industry oversight.

“We have an industry that was never regulated. You begin to regulate it, and players who have been calling the shots to Ghanaians begin to present a different face,” he said.

About 99% of SHS students use mobile phones in school – Angel Carbonu

The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu, has indicated that approximately 99% of Senior High School (SHS) students own mobile phones.

During an interview on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Mr. Carbonu expressed concern about this widespread trend.

“We are deceiving ourselves that children should not bring mobile phones to schools. I can tell you that about 99% of children in SHS have mobile phones” he said.

Mr. Carbonu recounted an incident in the Eastern Region where Curriculum and Assessment Officers initially believed students did not have phones.

However, upon encouraging them to use phones for an exercise without consequences, all students promptly produced their devices.

“In the next 5 to 10 years, if you don’t have knowledge in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a teacher, you will become ancient” he said.

He emphasized that students possess significant ICT skills, underscoring the increasing role of technology in education.
