A vote against Bawumia is a civic duty – Bridget Otoo

Prominent Ghanaian journalist Bridget Otoo has urged the public to vote against the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“Bawumia is needed here…. A vote against Bawumia is a civic duty,” she wrote on the X platform.

Her plea follows a recent report highlighting discrepancies in remittance tracking by the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Auditor General (AG), revealing that approximately $12 billion in remittances to Ghana from 2018 to 2022 are unaccounted for.

The report shows conflicting data between the World Bank and the Bank of Ghana.

While the World Bank tracked $21.1 billion in remittances to Ghana during this period, the Auditor General’s reports on the BoG’s consolidated statements of foreign exchange receipts and payments only accounted for $9.5 billion, leaving a gap of about $11.6 billion.

Furthermore, the Bank of Ghana’s 2023 annual financial statement disclosed that 11 licensed FinTech companies provided inward remittance services, with remittances totaling GH¢57 billion (US$5 billion) in 2023, up from GH¢18 billion (US$3 billion) in 2022.

However, the BoG failed to disclose the actual amounts received in foreign currencies for both years, violating Accounting Standard 21 (IAS 21).

Additionally, the BoG’s consolidated statements have consistently failed to capture remittances held by payment platforms other than the 23 dealer banks, allowing significant leakages and enabling some FinTech companies to illegally hold foreign exchange at the state’s expense due to inadequate regulatory frameworks.

According to the World Bank, $4 billion in remittances flowed into Ghana’s economy between 2016 and 2022, making forex inflows from remittances higher than those from cocoa, oil, and even gold when seasonalized to reflect the true amounts received.

NAPO’s recent apology shows he is not arrogant – Koku Anyidoho

Former Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho has lauded the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate for the 2024 general election, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) over his recent apology.

According to Mr Anyidoho, arrogance tag on NAPO is contrary to his recent action as people in that category do not acknowledge their mistakes.

He added that NAPO must be vindicated as he has shown a sign of maturity and remorsefulness.

“God has His ways of making things beautiful in His time. I know that arrogant people DON’T accept their mistakes, let alone find humble space in their hearts to apologize. If Napo has been humble enough to apologize, he has proven that he is NOT arrogant. Brave men apologize💪🇬🇭,” he added.

NAPO had claimed that President Akufo-Addo’s achievements surpasses those of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and other former presidents.

NAPO made these remarks during a ceremony in Kumasi, Ashanti Region to unveil him as the flagbearer of the NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate in the upcoming December Polls.

He stated, “Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo”.

My comment wasn’t meant to disrespect Nkrumah, former presidents – NAPO apologises

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate for the 2024 election, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, has issued an apology for his comparison of the achievements of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, to those of incumbent President Akufo-Addo.

In a statement on Friday, Napo clarified that his remarks earlier in the week were not intended to disrespect Dr. Nkrumah or any former heads of state.

His apology follows criticism from various quarters, including Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah and leaders of the Conventional People’s Party (CPP), who demanded a retraction and apology for what they deemed a denigration of Dr. Nkrumah’s legacy.

“The statement reflects my personal opinion about President Akufo-Addo’s impact relative to other Presidents we have had.

“I wish to emphasis that I never meant to disrespect our former President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah or any of our former heads of state, including my own grand uncle and mentor, Mr. John Agyekum Kufuor,” portions of the statement read.

He acknowledged the concerns raised and expressed regret for any discomfort his statement may have caused, despite initially defending his remarks in the face of public backlash.

Next pandemic to hit Ghana is Non-Communicable Diseases – Health Expert warns

Health experts are issuing a dire warning that Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) could emerge as the next global pandemic post-COVID-19 if prompt action is not taken.

Annually, over 94,000 deaths are attributed to NCDs like diabetes, hypertension, kidney failure, and cancers, yet current efforts to combat this silent crisis are deemed inadequate.

At the JoyNews National Dialogue on NCDs, experts emphasized the urgent need for proactive government intervention.

Prof. Gordon Abekah-Nkrumah, from the University of Ghana Business School’s Department of Health Services Management, stressed a multidimensional approach to tackling NCDs.

He underscored the necessity of robust regulations and policies to address the underlying causes of these diseases.

“NCDs are the next pandemic. How are we communicating this to the elites who have the power to make decisions when it comes to resource allocation, such as the Ministry of Finance and cabinet?

“Do they see NCDs as the next COVID, which may necessitate the President addressing the nation every fortnight and holding meetings all over the place?

“The way we package this message and align it with their own incentives, in terms of how this determines their electoral fortunes, will be very important,” Prof. Abekah-Nkrumah stated.

Effectively conveying the severity of NCDs and their potential impact on public health and the economy is essential for mobilizing support and resources. Dr. Kwasi Boahene, Director of Health Systems at PharmAccess, painted a bleak picture of Ghana’s NCD landscape, projecting annual expenditures of approximately six billion dollars by 2030 to address these chronic ailments.

The consensus among health experts is clear: immediate, strategic interventions are imperative to prevent NCDs from evolving into the next pandemic. This calls for comprehensive policies and persuasive engagement with decision-makers.

  • Debating with Mahama will expose you – Jantuah to Bawumia

Debating with Mahama will expose you – Jantuah to Bawumia

A prominent member of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP), Kwame Jantuah, believes that a presidential debate between Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama would expose Dr. Bawumia.

Mr Jantuah argues that Dr. Bawumia would struggle with basic questions about the prices of commodities like tomatoes and onions, revealing vulnerabilities in his knowledge.

“The debate will expose him. He will be asked how much is food inflation now, how much is tomatoes, and onions, what will he say?” Mr Jantuah said on the New Day show on TV3 Friday, July 12.

Meanwhile, Abraham Amaliba, Director of Conflict Resolution for the NDC, dismissed the idea of an economic debate, claiming that economic realities are already evident to Ghanaians.

Mr Amaliba highlighted that the exchange rate during Mahama’s tenure was more favorable compared to current conditions.

“He should go and debate with the exchange rate. The debate he is looking for with Mahama will be a complete waste of prime time and even suicidal for Bawumia,” he added.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia had challenged former President Mahama to a live presidential debate to discuss their respective visions and policies for Ghana.

Addressing supporters in Bunkpurugu, North East Region, Dr. Bawumia expressed eagerness for the debate but doubted Mahama’s willingness to participate.

“I am looking forward to a debate with John Mahama on the economy, on the country on the governance,” Dr. Bawumia said.

“But I am afraid that he is running away from a debate. His people say he doesn’t want to debate. I have never heard an opposition leader who doesn’t want to debate. But he knows I will expose the emptiness of his policies,” the NPP flagbearer added.

With Dr. Bawumia issuing the challenge, the decision to engage in a debate now rests with former President Mahama.

“He says he has a 24-hour economy which he cannot explain. It is as empty as an empty barrel. He cannot explain it and none of his people can explain it. They say they will be exporting lions and elephants.”

“When we meet mano a mano, we can debate, and the country will see where our policies lie and that is where we should go. We should give the country an opportunity to listen to us. If he chooses not to debate, I’ll continue to sell my policies,” he said.

In established democracies, presidential debates are a fundamental part of the electoral process, offering a platform for candidates to articulate their policies and visions to voters.

There’s widespread clamor, including from civil society groups, for a debate between the leading candidates, giving Ghanaians a chance to hear firsthand about their plans for the nation.

Having issued the challenge, Vice President Bawumia now awaits former President Mahama’s decision, placing the ball firmly in Mahama’s court.

I am guided by the belief that what God doesn’t allow, won’t occur – NAM 1

CEO of Brew Marketing Consul and former head of Menzgold, Nana Appiah Mensah, known as NAM1, reflected on the challenging six to seven years of court proceedings, attributing his endurance to divine grace.

In an interview with JoyNews’ Richard Kwadwo Nyarko following the court’s dismissal of his no-case application and order to open his defence, NAM1 acknowledged the arduous journey but expressed steadfast reliance on God’s promises.

NAM1 lamented the plight of his customers with locked funds, emphasizing his inability to disburse funds until the criminal proceedings conclude.

He explained, “It has been painfully challenging but of course what doesn’t break you will make you stronger, and I am a believer, you know whatever God doesn’t permit doesn’t happen so it is fine. It is very fine. I am not a person that complains.”

He assured that once legal proceedings conclude, his company would promptly fulfill its financial obligations to customers.

The court, presided over by Justice Ernest Owusu-Dapaah, dismissed NAM1’s no-case application, ruling that both Brew Marketing Consul and Menzgold must present their defence.

“It breaks our heart that people have had to suffer these unintended consequences. It breaks our hearts but we are before a criminal court and if you know what the criminal court establishment is about, it is not a remedial court.

“It is a punitive court and by extension, a reformative court so you come before a criminal court, you are not here to remedy a situation but we have come to pay the debt.”
He gave the assurance that as soon as the process was over, his firm would be happy to fulfil the necessary payment obligations to customers.

My track record surpasses Mahama’s – Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, has highlighted his extensive execution of developmental projects in northern Ghana, particularly in Chereponi.

He questioned the track record of John Mahama during his presidency, particularly scrutinizing the projects initiated in the northern region. Bawumia emphasized that despite Mahama’s tenure as president, there were no substantial projects attributed to him in Chereponi.

In contrast, Bawumia emphasized his achievements as vice president, citing significant impacts made through various developmental initiatives. Addressing a gathering of chiefs and elders in Chereponi, he asserted that John Mahama lacks new offerings for the region.

“My main opponent in this election, former president John Dramani Mahama, was president before. I have not been president before. I am vice president, but John Mahama cannot point to one project in Chereponi.

“I can point to many projects as vice president in Chereponi and so if as vice president, I have been able to start many things in Chereponi, as president, I will be able to finish many things in Chereponi.”

His resignation follows his unveiling as the running mate to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 Presidential elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has accepted Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s resignation from the Energy Ministry, effective July 18, 2024.

This decision allows Dr. Opoku Prempeh to fully focus on his new role as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate.

In a statement issued by the Presidency’s Director of Communications, Eugene Arhin, President Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to Dr. Opoku Prempeh for his dedicated service to Ghana.

“His tenure as Minister for Education and as Minister for Energy has been marked by a stellar record of accomplishments and significant contributions to the education and energy sectors.

“In light of Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s resignation, President Akufo-Addo has asked the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Abu Jinapor, MP for Damongo, to exercise Cabinet oversight responsibility over the Ministry of Energy.

“Additionally, the Minister-of-State-designate at the Ministry of Energy, Herbert Krapa, will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Ministry.

Du Bois Centre has been leased to a private company for 50 years – Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, has criticized the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration for transferring control of the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre to a newly incorporated private foundation.

He alleges that the W.E.B. Du Bois Museum Foundation Ghana LBG., lacking a proven track record, has been granted a 50-year management contract for the Du Bois Centre.

In a social media post on Wednesday, July 10, Ablakwa revealed that the agreement was signed on September 22, 2023, by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, and the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame.

“The W.E.B. Du Bois Centre will now be managed and totally controlled by a private entity known as the W.E.B. Du Bois Museum Foundation Ghana LBG. The transfer agreement was signed by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey and Ghana’s Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Hon. Godfred Yeboah Dame — both representing the Government of Ghana. They signed the transfer agreement on September 22, 2023.”

“Under the 50-year agreement, the foundation will appoint a majority of 6 board of directors while the Government of Ghana appoints only 3. The foundation will also appoint the board chairman giving them absolute control. The bizarre agreement also ensures that only 2 Government of Ghana nominees will have top management positions as the foundation enjoys an unlimited number.”

  • Cut off my head if NPP doesn’t win 2024 elections – Salam Mustapha

Cut off my head if NPP doesn’t win 2024 elections – Salam Mustapha

National Youth Organiser of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has asserted his unwavering belief that the party will retain power in the upcoming 2024 general election, going so far as to challenge for his head to be chopped off if they fail to win.

In a viral video Salam Mustapha, who was speaking at an event to party faithful, expressed his absolute confidence that the NPP will secure victory on December 7.

“We are not losing the election; let nobody try to convince you NPP is going to lose. I am telling you, if we lose this election, I keep on telling people, ‘cut off my head.’ That is the level of my confidence going into that election,” he stated.

Mustapha’s conviction is rooted in the NPP’s numerical advantage over the main opposition, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), particularly in the party’s stronghold of the Ashanti Region.

“Greater Kumasi alone, just 11 constituencies cancel about five-six regions. If we take the 47 constituencies, it cancels about eight regions out, and still, there is change. In 2020, the NDC had about 600,000 votes in Ashanti Region, which is more than what they got in their own Volta Region. Numbers; that is why I keep saying we need to keep paying attention to the numbers. If we drop the NDC votes in Ashanti Region and the NPP is able to hit 75%, this election is done. So when I look at the numbers; when I study the trend analysis, nobody can convince me NPP is going to lose the elections in December; we are not losing the election.

“We are not going to lose; there are people who think that NPP is done; we have lost. Check the polls; the NPP is gaining, and the NDC is dropping. Last year or early this year, they said they were going to win the election with 58%, and I told someone these people are mad. It is true, the NDC can never win an election with even 52%; they don’t have the numbers. You can quote me anywhere, and any day I will defend it…” he expressed.

The 2024 general election is expected to be a fierce contest between the NPP and the NDC as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo completes his second term.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s flagbearer, has chosen former energy minister and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, as his running mate.

They will face former President John Dramani Mahama and former Minister for Education, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, on the NDC side.

Go and apologize to Kufuor for rubbishing his contributions to Ghana’s development – Nyaho Tamakloe to NAPO

A founding member of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe, has urged the party’s running mate for the 2024 general election, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, to apologise to former President John Agyekum Kufuor.

In an interview with 3FM, Dr. Tamakloe insisted that the former energy minister should apologise to President Kufuor for belittling his contributions to Ghana’s development by claiming that President Akufo-Addo has outperformed every president in Ghana’s history.

“The only thing I will tell him is that he should go to [former President] J.A. Kufuor and apologise to him. That is the only person I want him [to go to]. He should apologise to Kufuor because when President Kufuor took over this country, this country was in shambles.

“He was able to straighten things. I wouldn’t even like to refer him to the demands that the CPP people are putting up. No, I am not a CPP man.

“I will ask him to go and apologise to Kufuor. Because without Kufuor when we took over in 2000, we wouldn’t have gotten to where we are today.”

“…He should go to Kufuor with his hands behind him, kneel before him and beg him for that sort of statement that he has made,” he stated.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, was recently nominated by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the ruling NPP, as his running mate, a choice which received the unanimous endorsement of the party’s National Executive Council.

During his official unveiling in Kumasi on Tuesday, June 9, 2024, NAPO asserted that not even Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, rivals President Akufo-Addo in terms of spearheading development in the country’s history.

His statement has received widespread criticism, with some citing it as evidence of his alleged arrogance.

However, according to Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe, NAPO’s actions stem from an inferiority complex, and he suggested that NAPO seek psychiatric help.

“As for me, I will not advise him because I have already told you what his problem is. It is not arrogance; it is inferiority complex, and he needs the help of a psychiatrist,” he stated.

Comparing Akufo-Addo to Nkrumah was needless – Kweku Baako to NAPO

The running mate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), recently made remarks comparing President Akufo-Addo’s achievements to those of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

These remarks have drawn criticism, particularly from the Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako.

Appearing on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’ Mr Kweku Baako criticized NAPO’s comparison as irrelevant and an unnecessary distraction.

Kweku Baako emphasized that while it is acceptable to highlight NPP projects and achievements under President Akufo-Addo, drawing comparisons to historical figures like Dr. Kwame Nkrumah only serves as a distraction during an election period.

“Let me be brutally frank, the comparison Napo made had no relevance. It was a needless distraction. It’s so unnecessary, completely irrelevant and needless. what is at stake right now is an election…as the running mate being outdoored; you can exalt NPP projects; President Akufo Addo’s projects, you’re entitled to that but don’t drag in another figure. Needless distraction; you don’t provide armour for your opponents or neutrals; needless and it lacks relevance…I’m disappointed” he lamented

During his unveiling in Kumasi, NAPO stated that no President, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has significantly contributed to Ghana’s development as President Akufo-Addo has.

He stated, “Since independence from 1957 till today, we’ve not had any president that has helped Ghana like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. I say from 1957 till today, you can bring your Kwame Nkrumah… no president who has protected Ghana and moved the country forward like Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,”

Reacting to these comments James Kwabena Bomfeh, also known as Kabila, stated that NAPO statements were uncalled for, emphasizing the importance of respecting Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s legacy and achievements in Ghana’s history.

“He goofed big time…He should not have made that statement, simply because he wouldn’t have had time to explain to the audience what he meant by the statement that Akufo Addo’s achievements surpass that of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. I believe that what added salt to injury was his comment of “your Kwame Nkrumah” which sends a wrong signal to the persona and the great achievements of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.”

“I want him to know and understand that, we don’t undermine Kwame Nkrumah. Admittedly, Kwame Nkrumah wasn’t a perfect human being, but he led Ghana to gain our Freedom, thereby making Ghana the first Country in sub-Sahara Africa to gain independence from colonial rulers. Beyond his great works, he has also penned down lots of articles and books more than any other President in the history of Ghana, intellectually contributing to the development of the minds of Ghanaians and the world at large, especially among the black race and the suffering people around the world” he stated.

GAF records 1,300 cases of mental health disorders every year – CDS

Since 2021, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has documented approximately 1,300 cases of mental health disorders each year.

This reflects post-COVID-19 data showing a significant increase in reported cases.

Alcohol use disorder is identified as the most prevalent issue, affecting 70 percent of male officers.

Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, disclosed these concerning figures and directed the GAF’s Department of Medical Services to launch a robust campaign to mitigate mental health challenges among its personnel.

“Mental health cases in the Ghana Armed Forces have risen since 2017, culminating in 614 recorded cases by the end of 2019 for both males and females. Post-COVID-19 statistics show a significant increase, with an average of about 1,300 cases each year from 2021 to 2023, with 70 percent being males,” Maj. Gen. Oppong-Peprah stated.

He expressed particular alarm over the prevalence of alcohol use disorder, addressing a conference marking the conclusion of the inaugural GAF Men’s Mental Health Awareness Week in Accra.

Maj. Gen. Oppong-Peprah emphasized that stigma surrounding mental health exacerbates these challenges, contributing to suicidal tendencies among affected personnel.

Globally, men are more than twice as likely to die by suicide compared to women, as reported by the World Health Organization.

Despite the high suicide rate among men, reported cases of depression—a significant precursor to suicide—are lower among males, a phenomenon linked to societal gender norms.

“A lot of responsibilities placed on men result in excessive pressure,” Maj. Gen. Oppong-Peprah noted.

He urged GAF personnel to foster mutual support, open communication, and emotional expression to combat stigma and promote mental well-being.

“Let us all strive to avoid substance abuse, excessive alcohol, gambling, and unnecessary spending, and organize our finances to live healthier lives going forward,” the CDS advised.

Anita Paddy, a senior clinical health psychologist at the Therapy and Wellness Department of the 37 Military Hospital, underscored that globally, one in four individuals experiences some form of mental health issue at some point in their lives.

She emphasized the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle, including balanced nutrition and adequate rest, to maintain mental health.

Paddy also highlighted the significance of hobbies and recreational activities in fostering positive mental well-being, urging personnel to openly discuss their feelings with peers or seek professional guidance to prevent adverse outcomes.

Captain Smart exposes NPP officials allegedly involved in galamsey

Host of the morning show Maakye on Onua FM/TV, Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart has leveled allegations against several New Patriotic Party (NPP) ministers.

He has accused them of engaging in illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey.

Among the officials he named are Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources George Mireku Duker, and Nzema East Municipal Chief Executive, Dorcas Elizabeth Amoah.

Known for his fearless journalism and anti-corruption advocacy, Captain Smart provided detailed accounts of how these government appointees allegedly facilitate and benefit from galamsey operations.

He specifically highlighted that the Nzema East MCE operates a shop selling the spare parts of machines used on river bodies for illegal mining, chanfangs.

Expressing concern over the detrimental impact of these actions driven by greed, Captain Smart’s exposé during his popular morning show has intensified discussions about the government’s stance on combating illegal mining.

Captain Smart also emphasized that these officials allegedly use their positions of power to shield illegal miners from law enforcement and regulatory scrutiny, perpetuating the illicit activities unchecked.

He also challenged the NPP appointees to take legal action against him if they believe they are not involved in the alleged activities.

“NPP ministers are engaging in galamsey, I have said it and I am repeating it again. Western Regional Minister, Mireku Duker, Nzema East MCE has a shop that sells the spare parts of Chanfang. I have dared them for the past 4 months and I want them to go to court and they will see something. Because people are desperate they don’t care about Ghana anymore. His excellency was right, those indulging in galamsey in the forest do not know where the funds are coming from. The main ones are here in Accra,”he added.

IGP leaked tape: Security stakeholders must be involved in IGP appointments – Report

The special Parliamentary committee, formed to investigate the leaked tape involving the Inspector General of Police (IGP), has recommended that the president, when appointing an IGP, should implement a consultative nomination and appointment process.

This process should involve key actors and stakeholders in the security and intelligence sectors.

“The nomination and appointment process should also take into account the nominee’s demonstrable political neutrality, proven high sense of patriotism and professional competence combined with impeccable professional experience.”

“To safeguard the sanctity and integrity of the nomination and appointment process for an IGP, the president should ensure that the process is devoid of politicisation by “power brokers,” political cronies, and influence peddlers to engender the necessary public trust in the nominee IGP,” the committee further elaborated in its report.

The committee underscored the importance of reviewing and amending Article 202 (1) of the 1992 constitution.

Additionally, it emphasized the significance of subjecting the nominee to parliamentary approval to uphold the political independence and legitimacy of the IGP’s office.

“This is important to protect the appointment process from perceptions of partisanship and political manipulation and ultimately, preserve the sanctity of the appointment process,” the report added.

Mahama’s ‘My First Coup D’etat’ launched in Moscow

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has recently unveiled the Russian language edition of his memoir, “My First Coup D’etat and Other Stories from the Lost Decades of Africa,” at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow.

Mahama described the book, first published in July 2012, as a memoir detailing his childhood experiences and the historical context of Ghana and Africa during the politically and economically turbulent 1970s to 1990s. He also mentioned that the book has been translated into Portuguese.

During the launch, Mahama drew attention to a chapter he thought would particularly resonate with the Russian audience, recounting his student days at the Institute of Social Sciences in Moscow during Gorbachev’s Perestroika era.

He shared memories of his philosophy lecturer, Mr. Gudoshnik, who preferred an interactive teaching method over the traditional approach, telling students, “We’re going to learn from each other. I’ll tell you what’s in the textbook, and you tell me what you know and what you think about it.”

Mahama expressed his appreciation to the Russian Academy of Sciences, Comrade Dmitriy Savelyev, a member of the Russian State Duma, the Russia-Ghana Parliamentary Friendship Association, and his old friends and comrades who contributed to the translation and organization of the launch event.

He also thanked Nana Ama Danquah, his friend and editor, for encouraging him to write the book and share his stories with a wider audience.

Encouraging the audience to read the memoir, Mahama highlighted its accessible and journalistic style, which aims to present the African story in a relatable way. He expressed hope that the book would become a valuable resource in Russian academia for those interested in Africa.

  • I will complete Saglemi Housing Project, allow public servants to live in for free – Akua Donkor

I will complete Saglemi Housing Project, allow public servants to live in for free – Akua Donkor

Leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor, has promised that if she wins the 2024 elections, her administration will prioritize completing the Saglemi Housing Project Units and providing free accommodation for public servants.

Highlighting the essential role of public servants in the nation, Donkor emphasized her commitment to addressing their housing challenges by ensuring they have access to rent-free accommodation.

She believes this initiative will not only enhance their well-being but also acknowledge their significant contributions to Ghana’s development.

The Saglemi Housing Project, initiated under the John Dramani Mahama government in 2012 with a $200 million loan to build 5,000 affordable housing units, saw completion delays and legal issues under subsequent administrations.

Currently, efforts are underway to revive the project, with five private companies bidding to collaborate on its completion, a move criticized by Donkor in a recent interview with graphic.com.gh.

“I am not happy with the NPP government partnering with private companies to finish and manage the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project.

“When I come into power, I will complete the Saglemi Housing Project and allow public servants to live in the apartments for free. They won’t pay rent. Even after retirement, their children will inherit the apartments,” she stated.

Akua Donkor has also announced her preparation for the upcoming presidential elections in December.

“I am actively preparing for the upcoming presidential elections. I have been very busy lately campaigning and recently undertook a two-week nationwide campaign tour,” she remarked.

Despite several attempts to secure the presidency in previous elections, she has yet to garner a significant number of votes.

  • I want to publicly debate with Mahama on Ghana’s economy – Bawumia

I want to publicly debate with Mahama on Ghana’s economy – Bawumia

Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed willingness to engage in a debate with his main rival, John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, focusing on economic and governance issues ahead of the 2024 general elections.

During a rally in Bunkpurugu, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of such a debate for providing clarity on their respective policies to the Ghanaian electorate.

“I am looking forward to a debate with John Mahama on the economy, on the country, on the government. But I am afraid that he is running away from a debate. His people say he doesn’t want to debate. But he doesn’t want to debate because he knows I’ll expose the emptiness of his policies.

“He says he has a 24-hour economy that he cannot explain. It is as empty as an empty barrel. He cannot explain, none of his people can explain. They say they will be exporting lions and elephants. But when we meet, we can debate, and Ghanaians will see where our policies lie. And that is the way we should go,” he said.

He criticized Mahama’s 24-hour economy proposal, calling it empty and challenging Mahama and his team to justify its feasibility.

In response, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, spokesperson for former President John Mahama, dismissed the debate calls, arguing that Bawumia had not sufficiently justified the need for such a debate.

Despite this, Mogtari expressed confidence that Mahama would excel in any debate against Vice President Bawumia or any other presidential contender.

Calls for a debate between the two candidates have grown among Ghanaians, particularly following Mahama’s recent media interaction addressing national issues.

  • You want to be president yet your policies are empty – Bawumia mocks Mahama

You want to be president yet your policies are empty – Bawumia mocks Mahama

The flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has ridiculed his counterpart from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, alleging that he cannot articulate his own 24-hour economy policy to Ghanaians.

John Mahama, a former President of Ghana, advocates for a 24-hour economy initiative aimed at enabling businesses to operate in three shifts per day.

His objective is to generate new job opportunities, particularly for young people, combat unemployment, and improve living standards in Ghana through a partnership between government and the private sector.

Mahama’s plan includes implementing new legislation to support businesses adopting a 24/7 operational model, encompassing labor laws and tax incentives.

He proposes favorable tax policies, stimulus packages, and financial aid for sectors like agro-processing and manufacturing.

Furthermore, he stresses the government’s commitment to prioritizing local procurement and implementing measures to ensure the effective functioning of the 24-hour economy.

However, speaking at a Youth Connect event in Bunkpurugu, North East Region, Dr. Bawumia criticized Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy, dismissing it as unsubstantial.

He stated, “He claims to have a 24-hour economy that he cannot explain; it is as empty as an empty barrel. He cannot explain it, nor can any of his associates. They claim we will be exporting lions and elephants, but when we meet face-to-face, we can debate, and the country will see where our policies stand.”

Emphasizing the importance of open policy debates, Dr. Bawumia stated, “That is the direction we should take; we should afford the country an opportunity to listen to us. But if he opts not to debate, I will present my policies to the people of Ghana, and they will make the decision.”

  • Were you expecting NAPO to “hero-worship Nkrumah”? – NPP’s Ellen Daaku to critics

Were you expecting NAPO to “hero-worship Nkrumah”? – NPP’s Ellen Daaku to critics

A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, Ellen Ama Daaku, has defended Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh against criticism directed at his remarks about President Akufo-Addo’s contributions to Ghana’s development compared to past leaders, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Speaking on the Wednesday, July 10, 2024, edition of GTV’s Breakfast Show, Ellen Ama Daaku justified Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s comments within the context of an election campaign and the NPP’s platform.

“It depends on the situation; he is speaking to his people; he is speaking to the NPP. We are looking at moving into an election; he was on a platform. Were you expecting him to go and extol the virtues of Kwame Nkrumah, Jerry Rawlings, or John Mahama?” she questioned.

She further elaborated that while some may view Kwame Nkrumah as superior, the NPP as a party does not share that perspective.

Defending Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s role and achievements under President Akufo-Addo, she highlighted his leadership in education and energy sectors, attributing his success to the opportunities provided by President Akufo-Addo.

“He doesn’t think that way, and I don’t think that way. I think Kwame Nkrumah was a president of Ghana; he led us to independence, but definitely, he has his issues. So, you don’t want us to discuss it? You want everybody to hero-worship Kwame Nkrumah?

“When it’s Kwame Nkrumah‘s birthday, when it’s Independence Day, we have discussions on his legacy and what he has done. You agree with what he has done; I agree with what I have done. The NPP, by ideology, by everything, is not in the same lane with Kwame Nkrumah and the CPP values.

“So, if an NPP running mate says that the president—let’s remember that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is the president who has given NAPO the leeway to do everything—he practically made him; gave him an opportunity to serve in his government in two very important positions as Minister of Education, where he implemented his flagship program, and then moved him to the Ministry of Energy. And for me, and a lot of Ghanaians, NAPO has done exceptionally well.

“So, if he is standing on the platform of the NPP on his unveiling as the running mate, are you expecting him to go and hero-worship Kwame Nkrumah?” she questioned.

The energy minister faced severe criticism following accusations of disrespecting Dr. Kwame Nkrumah during his introduction as the running mate of NPP flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking at a gathering of party leaders and supporters on Tuesday, June 9, 2024, in Kumasi, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh emphasized that President Akufo-Addo has surpassed even Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, in advancing the country’s development.

“It has never happened in the history of Ghana. If President Akufo-Addo retires, I can hit my chest and state that since the nation’s inception in 1957, there has not been a president who has helped the state more than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“I am saying that from 1957 to now, whether you pick ‘your’ Kwame Nkrumah… there is nobody who has led Ghana and protected the country or developed Ghana more than Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” he stated.

  • Vote for me to put arrogant and corrupt NPP officials in check – Mahama to Ghanaians

Vote for me to put arrogant and corrupt NPP officials in check – Mahama to Ghanaians

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has urged Ghanaians to cast their votes for him and his running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, July 10, 2024, Mahama called on voters to reject what he described as the “corrupt, greedy, and arrogant” government of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He emphasized the need for a change in leadership to address the socio-economic challenges exacerbated by the current administration.

“Building Ghana together means rejecting the arrogance, corruption, and greed of this non-performing NPP administration that only seeks to extend the misrule and socio-economic hardships imposed on us by the Akufo-Addo Bawumia government.

He criticized the NPP government for what he sees as a decline in the dignity of the presidency and the worsening conditions faced by Ghanaians.

“On 7th December, I will need your vote to RESET our beloved country, Ghana, fix the broken economy, create decent and well-paying jobs for the youth through the 24-hour economy initiative, and establish a National Women’s Bank to provide financial assistance to one million women businesses,” he said.

Mahama condemned the present administration, alleging it has undermined the presidency’s stature and exacerbated the nation’s challenges and suffering.

He vowed to restore the dignity and honor of the office should he be elected.

“I need your vote to investigate and punish the corrupt NPP officials who have stolen and continue to steal from the poor taxpayer, scrap the COVID and E-levies, abolish ex-gratia, and reduce the size of government drastically to a maximum of sixty ministers. With your votes, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and I will restore dignity, humility, vision, and experience to the presidency.

“God bless you for deciding to vote for change on December 7.
    John Dramani Mahama.”

  • Apologize to Ghanaians for disrespecting Nkrumah – NDC to NAPO

Apologize to Ghanaians for disrespecting Nkrumah – NDC to NAPO

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Andrews Nana Akwasi, has demanded an apology from Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This demand follows Dr. Prempeh’s controversial remarks about Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During a rally at the Kumasi Jubilee Park on July 9, Dr. Prempeh, also known as NAPO, declared, “No president since independence has developed Ghana more than President Akufo-Addo; not even your Kwame Nkrumah.”

This statement has sparked widespread criticism and public backlash.

Critics have questioned Dr. Prempeh’s disregard for the advice of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to avoid actions that could cause regret for Dr. Bawumia in choosing him as his running mate.

Speaking on GhanAkoma, Nana Akwasi described the Energy Minister’s comments as disrespectful and arrogant.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh failed to heed the advice of his uncle, the Asantehene, who is also the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom. During the event, I had indications that he paid his school fees. Despite being only three kilometers from the Manhyia Palace to the Jubilee Park, Dr. Prempeh reinforced the perception of his arrogance by disparaging Ghana’s first President in an arrogant posture,” Nana Akwasi remarked.

He further urged, “We ask that Dr. Muhammadu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh issue an unqualified apology to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu, the family of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, all former Presidents of Ghana, and the general public for the disrespect, impunity, and arrogance.”

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has projected Ghana’s population to exceed 50 million by 2050, marking a substantial rise from 30.8 million in 2021.

According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census Thematic Report on Population Projections, the population is anticipated to grow 1.7 times larger than the enumerated population in 2021.

The report identifies Greater Accra and Ashanti regions as remaining the most populous, each expected to reach approximately 7.5 million people by 2050.

Meanwhile, the Northern, Northeast, and Savannah regions are forecasted to experience the highest growth rates, with their populations projected to double by 2050.

Significant demographic shifts are also highlighted, including a decrease in the youth population and an increase in the elderly population.

Urban areas are poised for significant expansion, with over half of all regions expected to be urbanized by 2030.

“By the end of the decade (2030), the population is expected to grow to 37.2 million persons, meaning that an estimated 711,706 additional persons, on average will be added to the population annually. The population residing in urban areas is projected to increase by 4.0 percentage points between 2021 and 2030: from 56.7 to 60.7 percent.”

Construction of 200 State Housing Company homes in Amrahia nears completion

Minister of Works and Housing Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has announced that 200 State Housing Company (SHC) homes in Amrahia have reached 75% completion.

The project aims to lower housing unit costs for the benefit of Ghanaians. Mr. Oppong Nkrumah stated on Wednesday, July 9, that he received an update from the SHC regarding the ongoing construction of these homes.

He noted that the project site is currently testing elements of the housing incentive package, providing infrastructure such as roads and water connections at no charge to the developer.

“Soon this will be extended to all master developers who sign up for government’s PPP framework for affordable housing,” the Minister wrote on his X platform.

He stressed, “The objective is to reduce the cost of housing units for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.”

Committee report on IGP leaked tape ‘so anaemic’, it must be rejected – Atta Akyea

The Chairman of the ad hoc committee investigating a leaked tape regarding a plot to remove the IGP, Samuel Atta Akyea, has criticized the committee’s report as lacking substance for parliamentary action.

Atta Akyea asserted that the report, which implicated senior police officers for misconduct under police regulations, did not provide a sufficient logical basis for parliamentary endorsement.

The committee’s unsigned report indicated that three senior police officers, COP Alex George Mensah, Supt. George Lysander Asare, and Supt. Emmanuel Eric Gyebi, were found to have engaged in misconduct, a significant breach of police regulations necessitating sanctions under the Police disciplinary procedure.

He emphasized that the committee’s role is not merely to accept statements at face value but to thoroughly investigate matters.

“I want to submit with the greatest of respect that this report reduced parliament and the good committee of parliament to a conveyor belt that anything they drop on it should go. You do not just listen to people who come before a committee and that will bring you to a conclusion of the matter. You delve into the matters. A committee of parliament is not a conveyor belt. They’re supposed to delve into this matter. And on that showing, this report is so anaemic.”

“It lacks substance for plenary to find, with the greatest of respect any decision on it and to uphold this report. Yes. And I urge this House to reject this report because there is no foundation of evidence for this report. And we shouldn’t make a resolution based on such an anaemic report,” he stated.

In response, Vice Chairman James Agalga defended the report, refuting Atta Akyea’s assertions as misrepresentations.

He clarified that the committee had carefully deliberated and appropriately handled legal definitions, rejecting claims of inadequate investigation or misinterpretation of facts.

“Mr Speaker, quite a number of issues have been raised, which constitutes a gross misrepresentation of the facts and of the report…in the course of the committee’s deliberations, the chairman had the opportunity to raise the arguments that he has canvassed before this house this evening that we could not elevate conspiracy to the level of our criminal jurisprudence under section 23 of the criminal and other offences act and we all agreed as a result of that intervention,” he stated.

“Mr Speaker, if you look at the report, we did not use the definition of conspiracy under section 23 of the Criminal and Other Offenses Act. We borrowed the dictionary meaning of conspiracy and dealt with the matter as such,” he stated.

Mahama is scared to have a debate with me – Bawumia

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has accused the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, of evading a potential debate out of fear that his “hollow policies will be exposed.”

Speaking during the second phase of his nationwide campaign in Nalerigu on Wednesday, July 11, Bawumia reiterated his readiness for a debate despite Mahama’s reluctance.

Speaking to his supporters during the second phase of his nationwide campaign in Nalerigu on Wednesday, July 11, Bawumia criticized Mahama and NDC communicators for their difficulty in clarifying the party’s proposed 24-hour economy.

He affirmed his commitment to promoting the NPP’s policies to the Ghanaian public, regardless of Mahama’s willingness to engage in a debate.

“I am looking forward to a debate with John Dramani Mahama on the economy and governance but I am afraid he is running away from a debate and his people say he doesn’t want to debate. He says he doesn’t want to debate because he knows that I will expose the emptiness of his policies.

“He says he has a 24-hour economy policy that he cannot explain, it is as empty as an empty barrel. None of his people can explain it and they say they will be exporting lions and elephants.

“When we meet man-to-man, we can debate and the country will see where our policies lie and that is where we should go, give the country an opportunity to listen to us, but if he chooses not to debate, I will continue to sell my policies to the people of Ghana and you will take the decision.”

We must pool resources, incentivize local communities to protect forests – Akufo-Addo

Ghana’s progress in forest restoration has been emphasized by President Akufo-Addo.

Since 2016, the government has established over one million hectares of forest plantations, enrichment planting, and native tree seedling projects, creating rural employment opportunities and bolstering food security through agroforestry initiatives.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted on Facebook that the Green Ghana Day Initiative, launched in 2021, has led to the planting of more than 52 million trees within four years, with widespread participation from citizens, schools, and the private sector.

Acknowledging these achievements, President Akufo-Addo underscored the ongoing need for increased and dedicated financing to sustain these efforts.

He emphasized the global importance of tropical forests, which house nearly half of the world’s forested areas, calling for pooled resources and incentives to engage local communities in forest protection.

Emphasizing a balance between environmental stewardship and development, he reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to leading in forest conservation and restoration for a sustainable future.

Speaking at the International Conference on Afforestation and Reforestation in Brazzaville on July 5, 2024, President Akufo-Addo urged African leaders to implement sustainable forest management policies, combat illegal activities, and support forest-dependent communities.

He stressed the importance of investing in research and technology to enhance understanding of forest dynamics, essential for advancing reforestation efforts.

In conclusion, President Akufo-Addo reiterated on Facebook the critical ecological, economic, and cultural roles that forests play in Africa’s landscape, emphasizing the imperative to protect and restore these invaluable natural resources for future generations.

“We need increased and dedicated financing to sustain our efforts. The tropical domain, home to nearly half of the world’s forests, cannot fund the required $393 billion annually alone.

“We must pool resources and incentivize local communities to protect forests. Let us think globally but act locally, prioritizing environmental stewardship alongside development. Ghana remains committed to leading in forest conservation and restoration, thus helping to ensure a sustainable future for all,” he said.

Chair of the special committee investigating a leaked tape regarding plans to oust the IGP, Samuel Atta Akyea, has rebuked Vice Chair, James Agalga, for claiming it was illegal to request the IGP’s call logs as evidence.

Atta Akyea attributed the committee‘s alleged shortcomings to Agalga’s misunderstanding of the Constitution.

Speaking in Parliament in Accra on Wednesday, Att Akyea said “We shall have the powers, rights, and privileges of High Court. So what are you saying that we can’t commandeer law? …So, what are you saying you don’t have the power.”

“That is why you messed up. You didn’t understand the Constitution,” he stated.

Atta Akyea further commented that the committee’s report lacks substance for any parliamentary action.

The report, unsigned by the Chairman, disclosed that senior police officers COP Alex George Mensah, Supt. George Lysander Asare, and Supt. Emmanuel Eric Gyebi engaged in misconduct, a serious violation of police regulations requiring sanctions according to the Police disciplinary procedure.

During parliamentary debate, Chairman Samuel Atta Akyea urged the house to reject the committee’s report, citing its lack of logical foundation.

“I want to submit with the greatest of respect that this report reduced parliament and the good committee of parliament to a conveyor belt that anything they drop on it should go. Parliament approves Herbert Krapa as Minister of State at Energy Ministry

Parliament has approved Herbert Krapa as the Minister of State-designate for the Energy Ministry.

This approval follows a previous attempt by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to expedite his vetting and approval, which was blocked by the Minority.

President Akufo-Addo nominated Herbert Krapa, the Deputy Energy Minister, to be Minister of State at the Energy Ministry after selecting the current Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, as the running mate for the NPP flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In response, the Majority Leader requested that Parliament fast-track the approval process to avoid a leadership vacuum at the ministry. However, the Minority in Parliament opposed this request.

Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah argued that the incumbent Energy Minister was still in office, making the rush unnecessary.

The issue resurfaced today, with the Appointments Committee recommending Herbert Krapa’s approval.

Despite a walkout by the Minority in protest, the report was ultimately approved.

  • Fish production in Ghana to drop by 2030 – Report

Fish production in Ghana to drop by 2030 – Report

By 2030, many Ghanaians may face hunger and malnutrition due to a projected decline in national fish production, according to Dean of the School of Natural Resources at the University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Professor Berchie Asiedu.

Prof. Asiedu disclosed that the nation’s fish consumption is expected to reach 888,096 tonnes by 2030, yet the total fish production is anticipated to meet only about 43 percent of this demand.

“This clearly shows that demand for fish consumption is expected to outweigh the national supply,” Prof. Asiedu explained.

At the current growth rate, per capita fish consumption is predicted to decline from 28 kg in 2018 to 23.9 kg in 2030. Prof. Asiedu noted that while overall fish consumption would increase, individuals would be eating less fish.

Prof. Asiedu shared these insights during a research update session organized by the School of Natural Resources in Sunyani, themed “Managing our Natural Resources: Academia-Industry Partnership for Sustainable National Development,” attended by natural resources experts.

He emphasized that fish, the cheapest and most consumed animal protein (60 percent) in the country, has seen rapidly increasing demand, growing from 960,000 tonnes in 2010 to 1.1 million tonnes in 2020.

During the same period, per capita fish consumption increased from 24.2 kg to 27.9 kg at a rate of 1.6 percent per annum.

Given the gaps in production and consumption trends, Prof. Asiedu called for urgent policies to accelerate aquaculture development in the country.

He also highlighted the importance of improving fisheries management practices and exploring adaptive strategies to enhance the capacity of fishers to cope with climate change.

In a later interview, Bono Regional Director of the Fisheries Commission, Hanson Kodzo Dzamefe, expressed concern about the nation’s over-reliance on marine fish and called for private-sector collaboration to develop the aquaculture sector.

He noted that aquaculture has significant potential for job creation and food security, stating that the inland fishing value chain could create millions of jobs with adequate investment.

Mr. Dzamefe encouraged unemployed youth and graduates to engage in commercial fish production, noting that aquaculture remains a lucrative business that can improve livelihoods and contribute to national food security.

  • E/R: Koforidua SECTECH bus involved in accident on Somanya road was uninsured – Report

E/R: Koforidua SECTECH bus involved in accident on Somanya road was uninsured – Report

The Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH) bus involved in the fatal crash on June 29, 2024, was uninsured as per reports.

Transporting about 50 staff members to a funeral, the bus crashed on a sharp curve along the Aseseeso to Somanya road in the Eastern Region.

Tragically, the accident claimed the life of a female kitchen staff member and left several others injured.

In response, Eastern Regional Minister Seth Kwame Acheampong, the Eastern Regional Director of Education, and leaders from the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) visited the bereaved family and the school to offer condolences.

They also visited six victims still hospitalized at the Eastern Regional Hospital.

The bus, registered GV 84-22, was part of a fleet donated to schools by the government through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) in 2022.

However, investigations by Starr News revealed that the bus had never been insured, as confirmed by the National Insurance Commission’s (NIC) Motor Insurance Database.

Consequently, none of the accident victims, including the deceased, will receive insurance benefits. Moreover, the vehicle itself is ineligible for coverage for repairs or replacement.

This incident has reignited discussions about state institutions’ compliance with the Insurance Act 2021 (Act 1061), which mandates insurance coverage for all vehicles on public roads.

Senior Minister Yaw Osafo-Maafo in 2018 explained the government’s reluctance to insure its vehicles: “As I speak, all government vehicles are not insured. As a policy, you don’t, because the frequency is such that the government is prepared to pay for  insurance coverage for people in an accident rather than insuring its vehicles. It’s a cost estimate.” He, however, urged the government to insure all its vehicles to boost the  insurance sector.

Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, MP for South Dayi, 2022 criticized the government on this matter, stating, “If we have over 18,000 government vehicles and about 98 to 99 percent of them are not insured, that is the problem that the Public Accounts Committee has uncovered, and it’s such an indictment on our public governance structure.”

Additionally, Suweibatu Adam, Chief Director at the Attorney General’s Office, revealed that budget constraints had left 92 official vehicles of the Ministry of Justice uninsured, raising further concerns about financial oversight and accountability.

The unfortunate Koforidua SECTECH bus accident underscores the critical need for government institutions, especially schools, to prioritize vehicle insurance. This is essential not only for ensuring the safety and welfare of students and staff but also for protecting public assets against unforeseen incidents.

C/R: 3 immigration officers nearly lynched at Assin Dompim for allegedly stealing GHC200

A dramatic incident unfolded in Assin Dompim, Central Region, where three officers from the Ghana Immigration Service were implicated in the alleged theft of Gh¢200.00 from a local trader’s shop.

The officers, dispatched from a newly established pure water factory in Assin Fosu, were tasked with delivering sachet water.

On Tuesday evening, they visited the shop of Akos Tiwaa, who had previously reported missing money.

To verify her suspicions, Tiwaa set a trap with Gh¢200.00, which reportedly disappeared from her money box soon after the officers completed their delivery.

The disappearance sparked widespread anger among local youths, prompting a search that ultimately revealed the money under the doormat of the officers’ vehicle.

This discovery heightened tensions between the community and the immigration officers, leading to the arrival of additional Immigration Service personnel and police from the Central North Regional Police Command to quell potential unrest.

The accused officers, consisting of one official and two casual workers as reported, vehemently deny the allegations.

They were taken to the police station for their safety while investigations continue. Despite efforts to obtain an official statement from the Immigration Service proving futile, sources suggest that authorities are committed to launching an independent inquiry into the matter.

It is important to emphasize that the officers are presumed innocent until proven guilty, and no arrests have been made thus far in connection with the incident.

You have 24 hrs to apologize for comparing Akufo-Addo to Nkrumah – CPP to NAPO

The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has called for an apology from Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for comparing President Akufo-Addo to Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

At his unveiling at Kumasi’s Jubilee Park on July 9, Dr. Opoku Prempeh who is the running mate to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, asserted that President Akufo-Addo has surpassed all previous Ghanaian presidents in developing the country, including Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

“I can boldly say that if the history of Ghana is told from 1957, we have never had a president that has helped Ghana more than Nana Akufo-Addo. I mean from 1957, even including your Kwame Nkrumah, none of them has protected Ghana and developed the country more than Nana Akufo-Addo,” he said at his official unveiling event at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi on July 9, 2024.

Dr Opoku Prempeh stressed that, “President Akufo-Addo has developed this country to the admiration of all. Therefore, we will not allow what happened in 2008 to repeat itself. It will be most appropriate for Nana Akufo-Addo to hand over to his junior brother, Dr Bawumia.”

Earlier, Dr. Opoku Prempeh was formally introduced to his uncle, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. During the ceremony, the Asantehene advised his nephew to shed the arrogant reputation attributed to him by his critics.

But in a statement reacting to this, the CPP said “The Convention People’s Party calls on the Honourable Minister, within 24 hours, to do the ‘Honourable’ thing for the sake of the Country’s image, and immediately resign from all Governmental and political positions, and issue an immediate apology and retraction.

“Failing which the party calls on His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to withdraw the Hon. Minister from his position as Minister of Energy, and also calls on His Excellency Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to withdraw him as his Vice Presidential candidate, for the sake of the Country’s image, and its long term political and economic fortunes. Ghanaians and Nkrumaist’s worldwide, will have no choice but to hit the streets to register their displeasure if the above, or similar measures, are not immediately enforced within 24 hours.

“As the popular saying goes, “one who puts on his armour should not boast like one who takes it off”, there is an election to be fought, albeit at the ballot box, and it would serve the sitting Government well to heed the voice of the people, lest their imminent electoral defeat becomes even worse than it is predicted to be.”

about the risks of electing a previously unsuccessful government.

He emphasized the importance of voters considering candidates’ track records before casting their ballots.

Speaking on the Ghanakoma morning show on Akoma 87.9 FM in Kumasi on July 10, alongside Sir John, he clarified that raising concerns about a candidate’s potential failures is not motivated by malice but serves as a necessary reminder based on past experiences.

Mr. Asafo Adjei highlighted that the alternative to the current government is “alarming” and “worse.”

“We are going into a competition and in that competition, that yesterday’s failure is the one coming up to say that you see they could not perform, so give me the chance.”

“It’s important to remind those who are going to take the decision that, this man who claims that, give me the chance cannot do it better. For that one, we need to make that point clear. We can no longer keep quiet. It doesn’t mean that if we say so, we are saying so in bad faith.”

“It is important that you remind the decision makers that the alternative is scary. The alternative is worse,” he said.

He praised the current NPP government’s achievements across various sectors compared to the previous NDC administration.

  • Akufo-Addo has damaged Ghana’s Oil and Gas industry – Kwakye Ofosu

Akufo-Addo has damaged Ghana’s Oil and Gas industry – Kwakye Ofosu

Government’s greed, corruption, and state capture, according to former deputy minister of information, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, have kept important investments out of the oil and gas industry.

He claimed that as a result, production is far below what the nation ought to be experiencing.

He believes that our oil and gas sector has suffered greatly under the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration.

“Their corruption, greed and state capture have driven away vital investments from the sector leading to much lower production than we should be having. Not a single oil well has been put into production in the last 8 years. And we just lost a case against ENI,” he said in a post on his X platform reacting to the $915 million suit brought by Eni Ghana and Vitol Upstream against Ghana.

On the other hand, the Minority advised the government to desist from making “unfortunate” and “immature” decisions that lead to legal action against Ghana.

The Final Award in the Eni & Vitol v. Ghana & GNPC arbitration has been released by the International Arbitration Tribunal.

The government claims that the Tribunal refused to award the claimants their money damages. By the end of the proceedings, the claimants had revised their initial $7 billion claim to $915 million plus interest.

The entirety of the Claimants’ claims against GNPC were also rejected by the Tribunal.

The claimants also asked the Tribunal to rule that Ghana violated the Petroleum Agreement by “refusing to withdraw or prevent reliance by third parties on the Unitization Directives,” a request that was denied by the Tribunal.

The claimant’s request that Ghana inform the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, and High Court of Ghana that the Unitization Directives were issued in violation of the Petroleum Agreement was also denied by the Tribunal.

The Tribunal, however, found that “in the circumstances in which they were issued,” the Unitisation Directives breached the Petroleum Agreement. That is, the unitisation was contrary to the applicable regulations and thereby breached Article 26(2) of the Petroleum Agreement. Nonetheless, the Tribunal affirmed Ghana’s right to the authority to unitise oil fields to achieve efficient exploitation of the deposits.

In regards to the division of fees and costs, the Tribunal determined that each Party would have to cover their own legal fees and costs because both had won in certain respects.

The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, responded to the Award by saying that, although he would have preferred that the Tribunal reject the Claimants’ claims against the Republic in their entirety, he is happy that the Tribunal rejected the claims against Ghana in part and the claims against GNPC in full.

He is also happy that Ghana will not be facing any major financial obligations as a result of the total rejection of all claims for monetary compensation made by ENI/Vitol against Ghana. Additionally, he is happy that the Tribunal upheld Ghana’s sovereign right to combine its oil fields.

The Attorney General went on to say that the Parties had to decide what course of action was best given the circumstances. In light of the Tribunal’s ruling, unitization is not illegal in general. In the present dispute, the Tribunal determined that the appropriate way and conditions for carrying out the same were not met.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the government is still determined to vigorously oppose any international arbitration claims that aim to place the nation in debt.

This is demonstrated by recent wins over Beijing Everyway, Cassius Mining, and Messrs. Micheletti Company Limited.

But the Minority in a statement signed by John Abdulai Jinapor, Ranking Member of the Mines and Energy Committee, said that it has “noted with grave concern the false and distorted narrative put out by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Government through the office of the Attorney General to the effect that Ghana has won the legal case between the ENI/Vitol and the Republic of Ghana, represented by the National Oil Company (GNPC), at the International Court of Arbitration (ICA) in London. Such contrived narratives constitute gross misrepresentations and must be treated as such.”

The statement added that “With this statement, we call on the Government to refrain from such unfortunate and immature decisions in the future. We urgently call on the President to intervene and seek an amicable resolution to the impasse between Springfield and ENI to avert any further deterioration and losses in the country’s oil and gas sector.”

Read below the statement by the Minority

    PRESS STATEMENT

    For Immediate Release

    9th July, 2024

STATEMENT ON ENI/VITOL VS GOVERNMENT FINAL RULING BY THE INTERNATIONAL COURT OF ARBITRATION

The Minority has noted with grave concern the false and distorted narrative put out by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia Government through the office of the Attorney General to the effect that Ghana has won the legal case between the ENI/Vitol and the Republic of Ghana, represented by the National Oil Company (GNPC), at the International Court of Arbitration (ICA) in London. Such contrived narratives constitute gross misrepresentations and must be treated as such.

It will be recalled that ENI initiated a legal process against the Republic of Ghana at the International Court Of Arbitration following attempts by then Minister of Energy, Mr Peter Amewu, to impose a unitisation agreement on ENI’s Sankofa field in the Offshore Cape Three Points(OCTP) block and Springfield Energy’s Afina discovery in the West Cape Three Points 2 Block.

Contrary to the statement put out by the Attorney General’s office, the International Court of Arbitration, in its ruling, states explicitly in paragraph 489 of page 144 that:

    i. The Republic of Ghana breached the Petroleum Agreement by issuing the Unitisation Directives in the circumstances in which they were issued;

    ii. Declares that each Party shall bear its own costs;

iii. Orders the Republic of Ghana to pay to ENI Ghana Exploration and Production Limited and to Vitol Upstream Ghana Limited EUR189,900 for the costs of the Tribunal and SCC.

Given the above ruling, it is clear that the ICA rules against the Republic of Ghana, with the court affirming that the Government of Ghana’s directive on the unitisation was contrary to the applicable regulations and a clear breach of Article 26(2) of the Petroleum Agreement. With this ruling, therefore, the directive on unitisation by the Akuffo-Addo government stands null and void and has no effect.

It is unfortunate that despite the caution by the Minority in Parliament and other Civil Society Organisations to this NPP Government to hasten slowly on this particular issue, the Government was adamant. In the circumstances, all our genuine advice, as usual, fell on deaf ears and was ignored. We wish to state that we hold President Akuffo-Addo and his NPP Government directly responsible for this embarrassing spectacle, which only has the potential of further jeopardising the potential gains of Ghana’s upstream oil sector.

It is instructive to note that, despite inheriting three (3) oil fields from the Mahama administration, this NPP Government has added nothing significant to the oil sector; on the contrary, oil production has declined by about 32% under the current NPP administration.

Regrettably, most of the major oil-producing companies have either exited the country or slackened on their upstream activities because most investors currently view Ghana as a hostile and unfriendly business destination under this inept Akuffo-Addo/Bawumia government.

The Minority wishes to use this opportunity to acknowledge and commend Springfield (an indigenous Ghanaian Company) and ENI/Vitol for their significant investments in Ghana’s upstream oil sector. In the spirit of cooperation and ultimate benefit, we wish to encourage ENI/Vitol and Springfield to work towards finding common ground for a harmonious resolution of the impasse unnecessarily created by the Akuffo-Addo/Bawumia Government.

With this statement, we call on the Government to refrain from such unfortunate and immature decisions in the future. We urgently call on the President to intervene and seek an amicable resolution to the impasse between Springfield and ENI to avert any further deterioration and losses in the country’s oil and gas sector.

    Thank you.

I made my sister’s death public because I want justice for her – Brother of 24-year-old KNUST graduate

The brother of Lois Abena Koranteng, 24, who passed away mysteriously while traveling for work with her supervisor, has disclosed the reasons behind his decision to make the information public.

George Agyenim Boateng, in a phone conversation with GhanaWeb, voiced his dissatisfaction with the cumbersome inquiry into his sister’s death.

A month after the incident, on June 7, 2024, Lois Koranteng, a graduate of Kwame Nkrumah Science and Technology, passed away, the police have made no arrests and have not updated the family on the status of their investigation.

The police allegedly withheld the report from the family in order to aid in their investigation, according to George Agyenim Boateng, who also claims that the police autopsy reports from the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital were kept secret.

He expressed his belief that his sister’s case has been neglected and pleaded with the police to expedite their investigation into the incident.

However, he continued, this process has been delayed, which is why he brought the issue to the public’s attention.

“We don’t know if Icons Energy (the company) is conducting a private investigation. The only people we know are conducting investigations which we are aware of is the Ghana Police Service and we trust Ghana Police such that they can do their best to fish it out.

“But I brought it to social media because to me, I feel the matter is being sidelined and I needed people to support me to seek justice for my sister. At least the police should hurry with their investigations because we are in pain”, he stated.

In addition, George Agyenim Boateng said that Icon Energy, the business where his late sister was employed, had since paid the family a formal visit to offer their condolences.

Recounting the actual events, he said that on June 7, 2024, the late Lois Abena Koranteng called the family to let them know that she and a company driver were going on a business trip to Anaji, a township in Takoradi, Western Region.

On June 8, 2024, however, the company got in touch with the family to let them know about their relative’s passing.

It was reported that the relative was discovered in the swimming pool at first light but was pronounced dead when they got to the hospital.

In an effort to bring his sister’s death to justice, Agyenim Boateng is pleading with the public for assistance.

  • Prices of gari go up due to cassava shortage

Prices of gari go up due to cassava shortage

The gari market in Koforidua is grappling with a severe cassava shortage, causing prices to soar sharply.

This development has sent shockwaves through the industry, leaving gari traders struggling to stay afloat.

According to a market survey by the Ghana News Agency in the second quarter of 2024, the scarcity of cassava led to a substantial price hike last month, resulting in poor sales.

The reduced supply of cassava is primarily attributed to farmers shifting their focus to other crops like garden eggs and okra.

Ms. Comfort Boateng, a gari trader, reported a slowdown in sales from April to June, attributing it to this price hike.

She noted that many cassava farmers had switched to cultivating garden eggs and okra instead.

“We are in the season of garden eggs and okra cultivation, so most cassava farmers are now farming garden eggs and okra.”  “This has made the supply of gari reduce leading to price increment,” She said.

As a result of dwindling cassava supplies, the price of gari has significantly increased. For instance, the price of a 20kg blue bucket rose from GH¢38 in May to GH¢45 in June.

Similarly, the price per kilogram of gari (olonka) surged from GH¢35 to GH¢40, and a margarine cup now costs GH¢6.00, up from GH¢5.00.

Madam Abena Mansah, a gari processor, lamented the rising costs of production, especially firewood used for frying milled cassava.

She emphasized the need for government support, such as subsidizing farming equipment and supplies, to sustain cassava production and stabilize gari prices.

Gari, a staple food made from cassava, has been widely consumed in Ghana and beyond for its affordability and ease of preparation.

It is favored by students, households, and institutions like prisons for its nutritional value, being rich in carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, and minerals according to research by Adunga Bayata of the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre.

It is not wrong for a royal to engage in politics – NPP’s Haruna Mohammed

The Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, has rebutted allegations that the New Patriotic Party is attempting to politicize Manhyia Palace.

His remarks respond to claims by National Democratic Congress (NDC), Deputy General Secretary, Mustapha Gbande, who suggested that selecting Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as a running mate politicizes the traditional institution due to NAPO’s royal lineage.

Haruna Mohammed clarified that it is not improper for someone from a royal background to engage in politics, stressing that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s royal lineage should not detract from his political participation.

He stated, “Unfortunately, when people are identified by their background, there is no doubt that Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh comes from a royal gate. The chief [Asantehene] highlighted this aspect of his background.”

Additionally, Haruna Mohammed emphasized that the Asantehene’s palace should remain apolitical, as it holds immense respect.

“Where lies the drawing of the Asantehene or the [Manhyia] palace into politics? The Asantehene’s palace is the most revered in our land. And I don’t think that the Asantehene has ever engaged himself in political activity.

He underscored that while the Asantehene is highly esteemed and respected, it is not inappropriate for any member from the palace, regardless of their title within the chieftaincy structure, to participate in politics.

“He is a very distinguished king who is much respected by the rank and file of the kingdom. But it is not a crime for any member that comes from that palace and without title within the chieftaincy divide within the palace to do politics,” citinewsroom.com reported.

“However, some chose not to heed this advice and so they were arrested by the NIB and the locally recruited agents by WAEC and handed over to the police,” it added.

According to WAEC, at the Save our Souls Educational Centre in Bekwai, three teachers—Patience Serwaah, Oscar Ben Azumah, and Thomas Gyimadu—were arrested for attempting to assist candidates. Additionally, unrelated individuals who tried to aid candidates included Christian Osei and Kyei Baffour Alex.

“They are Patience Serwaah, Oscar Ben Azumah, and Thomas Gyimadu. Other persons who were unrelated to the examination but came around attempting to assist the candidates are Christian Osei and Kyei Baffour Alex,” it added.

“Nkoranza Senior High School. An invigilator, Abeam Danso, was arrested with a mobile phone on which were answers to the Religious and Moral Education Questions. Chemu Senior High School, Tema, a teacher, Amoako Joseph, was arrested for taking pictures of the question papers and posting them on a platform named ‘Apor Lord for BECE, 2024.’

Additionally, at Santoe Basic School, teachers from DESVY International School were discovered solving Science questions on their school bus to transmit answers to students in the examination hall.

The implicated teachers—Thomas Ativor, Emmanuel Ammisah, Edwin Goodluck, and Richard Boateng—have all been reported to the police and are facing legal proceedings, according to WAEC.

“They are; Thomas Ativor, 37, a Twi language teacher, Emmanuel Ammisah, 47, a mathematics teacher, Edwin Goodluck, 39, a Science teacher and Richard Boateng, 32, a Computing teacher,” it added.

    Work resumes on Dome-Berekusu-Kitaase road

Construction work on the Dome-Berekusu-Kitaase road project has recommenced after a temporary suspension due to Ghana’s IMF bailout program.

Reports suggest that there is an ongoing activity along the 23 km stretch, which aims to connect the Greater Accra Region with the Eastern Region.

Initially budgeted at GH¢195 million and funded by the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) and the Government of Ghana, the project was originally slated for completion within 24 months after President Akufo-Addo initiated it in July 2022.

However, the government’s IMF bailout request and subsequent debt restructuring caused a pause in construction, impacting local residents and commuters.

Local residents have expressed relief at the project’s resumption but emphasize the need for swift completion to alleviate health and economic challenges posed by the road’s poor condition.

Commuters have voiced concerns about health risks due to the road’s uneven surface and inadequate drainage.

Nicholas Tieku, the project site engineer, confirmed that funding has been secured from the construction firm, enabling work to resume. He also provided updated timelines for project completion and outlined the ongoing scope of activities.
