Parliament is not privy to govt’s decision to lease Komenda Sugar Factory – MP

The Ranking Member on the Trade and Industry Committee and MP for Bole Bamboi, Yusif Sulemana, has expressed significant concerns regarding the government’s possible plan to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to the Indian company, West Africa Agro Limited, for a duration of 15 to 20 years.

The factory is currently undergoing a test run in preparation for full production. During a recent visit, Trade and Industry Minister Kobina Tahiru Hammond announced that the government intends to lease the facility to West Africa Agro Limited, with an option for renewal, as part of an effort to revive its operations and meet domestic demand.

The Komenda Sugar Development Company Limited, founded in 1964, has faced numerous challenges, including interruptions in production.

Despite investments from the Indian Export-Import Bank and previous funding from the NDC government, the factory has not yet met its operational goals.

In an interview with Citi FM, Mr Sulemana criticized the lack of disclosure to Parliament regarding this decision and called for Trade Minister K.T. Hammond to be summoned to address the issue.

With Parliament currently in recess, Mr Sulemana plans to release a statement questioning the Trade Minister’s plans for the factory.

He underscored that the factory’s goals remain unfulfilled under the current administration and stressed the need for Parliament to be informed about any decisions affecting its future.

  • Komenda residents threaten gov’t with demo over 20-year lease of Sugar Factory

Komenda residents threaten gov’t with demo over 20-year lease of Sugar Factory

Residents of Komenda in the Central Region have expressed their intention to stage a protest against the government’s plan to lease the Komenda Sugar Factory to a private company.

The government proposes to lease the Komenda Sugar Development Company Limited to West Africa Agro Limited, an Indian-based firm, for a renewable term of 15 to 20 years.

According to Trade and Industry Minister K.T. Hammond, this move is intended to revive the factory’s operations to meet domestic sugar demand.

However, local residents are strongly opposing this plan.

Samuel Awudzirato, Convenor for Concerned Residents of Komenda, has called on the government to reverse its decision, insisting that the factory should remain fully government-owned.

He is concerned about the negative effects the lease could have on local farmers and the community.

“But I can give you a hint, there will be a demonstration very soon. That I can assure you. We demand that the government doesn’t lease the factory to any entity. The factory is 100% owned by the government. We don’t want the factory to be leased to any company.

“We want the factory to be reverted to the production of sugar, through sugar cane, and not just importing the raw sugar from India and refining it to white sugar.

“That process only takes about 20% of the whole production, which means that we have taken out over 10,000 farmers from the whole value chain, which is going to cause serious problems. And so, we demand that they don’t give it to any entity and revert to the old system of crushing sugar cane to produce sugar,” he said.

Mr Awudzirato emphasized the potential issues with the lease, noting that it could result in a shift from processing locally grown sugar cane to importing raw sugar from India for refinement.

He argued that this would marginalize over 10,000 local farmers who depend on the factory.

Additionally, the minority party in Parliament plans to summon Minister K.T. Hammond to discuss the issue further.

The Komenda Sugar Factory, established in 1964, ceased operations for many years.

In 2016, the previous NDC government secured a $35 million loan from the Indian Export-Import Bank and an additional $24 million investment to rehabilitate the factory.

It is currently in the test run phase before full production begins, with the government’s proposed lease arrangement in the pipeline.

Man in hot waters after taking GHC10k from Quick Credit for father’s funeral

An emotional video making the airwaves depicts a Ghanaian man, Jonathan Mensah, crying uncontrollably after he was arrested by some officials of a micro-finance provider, Quick Credit, for failing to repay his loan.

In the video the man is heard saying  “I am not saying I won’t pay the money but  it is unfortunate. I beg you I will pay,” he added.

The 45-year-old carpenter who resides in Akosombo, Eastern Region is said to have taken a loan of GHS 10,000 from the credit facility in December 2023 in a bid to cater for his father’s funeral expenses.

According to EDHUB, who shared the video on X, the man’s debt has accrued with over an interest of GHS 4,000.

He added that Jonathan Mensah’s inability to commit to the part of the agreement with the institution is as a result of an unforeseen circumstance he encountered prior to the funeral of his father.

Explaining further, EDHUB indicated that the victim got involved in an accident hence diverting the initial purpose of going for the loan.

EDHUB has called on individuals who are touched and would love to extend a helping hand to personally contact Jonathan Mensah on 0245154725.

  • Preventing reclassification of Achimota Forest is our top priority – Minority

Preventing reclassification of Achimota Forest is our top priority – Minority

The MP for Tamale North, Alhassan Suhuyini, has vowed that the Minority caucus will take all necessary measures to prevent the reclassification of the Achimota Forest.

As the Ranking Member of the Lands Committee, Mr Suhuyini expressed concerns that any development in the forest could jeopardize the country, particularly residents of Accra.

In a recent interview on the Citi Breakfast Show with Caleb Kudah, he criticized the government’s decision, questioning how the reclassification would benefit Ghanaians.

Mr Suhuyini noted that the NPP government has invested over GH¢400 million in afforestation initiatives, excluding the annual Green Ghana Day, making the move to reclassify the Achimota Forest for commercial and residential use perplexing.

He highlighted the inconsistency of spending GH¢421 million on forest conservation while simultaneously declassifying an area that has been preserved for decades.

The MP emphasized that the forest’s preservation is crucial for maintaining air quality in Accra, which is becoming increasingly polluted.

Mr Suhuyini announced plans for his committee to visit the forest to verify whether parts are being allocated to the Owoo family, stressing the importance of protecting the Achimota Forest from further damage.

“The government has spent some GH¢421 million on national afforestation programmes and that is aside from the Green Ghana Day and all of these are aimed at improving our forest cover, yet we have this same government declassifying the Achimota Forest

“Turning 361 acres of land into the concrete jungle and yet we can not point to any forest the government has created since spending all the GH¢421 million on afforestation programmes and this forest that has been created way before we were born and we are fixated at destroying it.”

Mr Suhuyini added that “everything that we can do to save the forest, we must do and my committee’s intention was to visit the forest on Thursday to ascertain for ourselves whether they were indeed demarcating portions to the Owoo family because we cannot allow ourselves to be poisoned because the Achimota Forest saves and filters our air due to how choked Accra has become.”

Ghana’s voter register doesn’t serve its purpose – Dr Omane Boamah

The Director of IT and Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has demanded a thorough audit of Ghana’s voter register, labeling it as “sick and unfit for purpose.”

In an interview on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem, on Friday, Dr. Boamah pointed out major flaws uncovered during the NDC’s new “voter profiling” exercise.

“Since we started, within a few hours, out of about 38,000 plus people profiled at the polling station level, there were about 4,000 deaths,” he revealed.

This initiative was designed to evaluate the current state of the voter register.

Dr. Boamah highlighted that these results suggest the Electoral Commission (EC) is unable to independently identify deceased individuals on the register.

He criticized the current practice of simply exhibiting the register, calling it inadequate to address the problem.

“It is people who will give EC the information backed with evidence,” he said.

He urged for a detailed audit to correct these discrepancies, asserting that “a proper audit shouldn’t take more than two weeks.

“You don’t need more than two weeks to audit the register, so if they want, they can use the exhibition as an excuse and technical audit at the same time.”

  • Isaac Adongo will be out of Bolga Central by October – NPP PC

Isaac Adongo will be out of Bolga Central by October – NPP PC

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Bolgatanga Central, Atiah Figo Awonekai, has predicted that the current MP, Isaac Adongo, may abandon the constituency due to anticipated defeat.

“Mr. Adongo is now running helter-skelter because of the pressure I am applying. By October or November, Isaac Adongo will flee Bolgatanga Central. I promise the NPP that this time, the Bolga seat will fall to the NPP,” Mr. Atiah declared.

Atiah Figo Awonekai attributed this potential retreat to the growing pressure he is exerting on Adongo, who currently serves as the ranking member of the Finance Committee in Parliament.

Atiah expressed his optimism about winning, citing his active engagement with local stakeholders compared to Adongo’s apparent complacency, as Adongo remains in Accra.

“While I was on the ground, engaging with the people and addressing their concerns, Mr. Adongo was comfortably relaxing in Accra, assuming his victory was assured,” Mr. Atiah stated while highlighting projects including the construction of the 30-kilometre Bolga-Sherigu-Naaga road, the Soe-Zaare road, the Zumbrungu-Zorkor road, and the establishment of a Bolgatanga Mechanical Enclave as being engineered by him.

“I assured the constituency executives that Mr. Adongo would soon feel the pressure and return to the constituency. True to my words, he is now constantly shuttling between Accra and Bolgatanga. He gets severe anxiety at the mention of my name,” he said.

  • Government lifts fishing ban

    Government lifts fishing ban

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD) has officially ended the one-month fishing ban, reopening the sea to artisanal fishers.

The closure was implemented to address the depletion of fish stocks and support their recovery. The symbolic reopening took place at the Akplabanya Beach Site in the Ada West District of the Greater Accra Region, where artisanal and inshore fleets were welcomed back.

At the event on Thursday, August 1, Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson announced the resumption of fishing activities and urged all involved to focus on conserving Ghana’s marine resources.

“The closed fishing season is a strategy adopted by the ministry and the fisheries commission to aid in the recovery of over-exploited fisheries resources, rebuild depleted fish species, and reduce fishing pressure on these resources,” she said.

“I urge the people of Upper Manya in the Ada West to move forward with a renewed dedication to conserving our precious marine resources. May this season bring abundant catches and prosperity to the fisheries and aquaculture sector,” she added.

Be careful! I see NPP taking over 19 seats from you – Prophet Kusi Boateng to NDC

Prophet Victor Kusi Boateng of Power Chapel Worldwide has unveiled a prophecy regarding the 2024 elections, forecasting a sequence of events from December 7 to December 9.

In a sermon to his congregation on Sunday, July 28, 2024, Prophet Kusi Boateng predicted that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, alongside Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, his vice-presidential pick, will secure victory in the election.

He stated that the vote counting and announcement will stretch into December 9, following the December 7 voting day.

“And the result is obvious. Things are difficult, I know that there are two people coming but the Lord has told me that by the 9th of December, His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia shall be crowned the president of Ghana,” he said.

The prophet also warned of heightened tensions and potential protests following the election results.

He described how initial protests will involve about 1,000 people on the first day, with a significant drop in participation on the second day, leading to a return to calm.

“The result will come on the 9th. Some people will try to cause mayhem so that people shall die and interestingly, they will call people on the street and on the first day only 1000 people will show up, no one will show up on the second day and there shall be peace.”

    Potential Shifts in Parliamentary Seats

Prophet Kusi Boateng forecasted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) might lose up to 24 parliamentary seats, while the NPP could also face losses if they are not careful. He cautioned that while the NPP might gain up to 24 seats from the NDC, they must remain vigilant.

    Advice to the Youth

The prophet advised Ghanaian youth against emigration despite current economic difficulties, expressing confidence in the country’s imminent progress. He reassured them of a forthcoming period of unprecedented development in the next seven years.

“The people that they say are my party members, NPP people, if they don’t take care, they will lose almost 7 to 10 seats but then if NDC also doesn’t take care, NPP will take over between 19 to 24 seats from them. The election is on the 7th, and on the 8th the result will not come, everybody shall be jittery.

“…in the next 7 years, this nation is going to experience an acceleration of advancement that it has never experienced in the past 50 and 60 years. Young men and women, don’t run away from this country. God is going to visit us one more time,” he stated.

W/R: 50-year-old man takes his life at ObengKrom

In ObengKrom, Suaman Dadieso District, Western North Region, a man reportedly took his own life by shooting himself.

The local Assemblyman, Hon. Sampson Bediako, confirmed the incident on Nyankonton Mu Nsem during a broadcast on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM.

The deceased, Moses Frafra, had lived in the area for two decades.

According to Bediako, Moses had recently returned from Côte d’Ivoire and had been suffering from a hernia. The community had stepped in to assist him in returning to his hometown due to his lack of nearby relatives.

Initially reluctant to share details about his family, Moses eventually agreed to return to Bolgatanga, with a planned stop at a relative’s place in Techiman.

Despite plans to leave on Monday, a gunshot was heard on Tuesday afternoon.

Upon investigation, Moses was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A passerby alerted the authorities, who then transported the body to the Enchi Government Hospital mortuary.

Bediako expressed disbelief over the suicide, attributing it to possible frustration.

“We mobilized to send him back home, and he agreed to go on Monday. However, on Tuesday, we heard a gunshot in the afternoon, and when we moved to the scene, we saw Moses in a pool of blood. He had shot himself in the head and was lying in a pool of blood. A passerby saw him and raised an alert.

“The police were notified, and the body was recovered and transported to the Enchi Government Hospital mortuary. I believe he committed suicide out of frustration, as I cannot fathom why he would do so.”

He also noted that Moses’ lack of a phone complicated efforts to contact his family.

Trust NDC to restore Ghana’s economy – Prof Opoku-Agyemang to Ghanaians

Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the vice-presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and running mate to John Dramani Mahama, has vowed that the party will rejuvenate Ghana’s economy if they win the upcoming election.

She pointed out the urgent need for economic recovery, given the decline experienced under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led by Nana Akufo-Addo.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang outlined the NDC’s plan to implement a 24-hour economy policy designed to revitalize the nation.

This policy is a key part of the party’s strategy to address and correct the economic issues caused by the current administration.

The proposed 24-hour economy will benefit businesses with tax incentives, reduced tariffs, and improved productivity. Additionally, the policy’s job shift system aims to generate more job opportunities and enhance financial stability for workers and households.

In her address to the Chiefs at Denkyira Bibianiha in the Upper Denkyira East constituency, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang encouraged all sectors to engage actively with the forthcoming 24-hour economy initiative.

“The NDC will restore hope and rebuild the economy to meet the aspirations of Ghanaians. We have done it before, and you can trust us to do it again for you,” she said.

  • Don’t mishandle equipment for DRIP project – Kennedy Agyapong to MMDAs

Don’t mishandle equipment for DRIP project – Kennedy Agyapong to MMDAs

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has expressed concerns regarding the potential misuse of resources allocated under President Akufo-Addo’s District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP).

Mr Agyapong fears that without a shift in the mindset of local officials, the initiative—which aims to provide Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with resources and equipment for road rehabilitation and maintenance may fall short of its goals.

In an interview with Oman FM on August 1, 2024, Agyapong commended President Akufo-Addo, Vice President, and the NPP for the initiative but voiced concerns about how the equipment will be managed.

“Let me commend President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Vice President, and the NPP, but my worry is, now that the machines have been given to the assembly, what measures are they also taking to keep them?

“The level of dishonesty in this country is such that they will use this to do politics even though it has been given to them to benefit Ghanaians.

“The good intentions that President Akufo-Addo had for this project, whether Mahama wins or Bawumia, if the assembly workers, members, DCEs, MCEs, presiding members, and members of the assembly don’t have a change of mind and continue with this dirty mindset, the money involved in all this will be wasted.

Mr Agyapong criticized the lack of commitment from some MMDAs, suggesting that the provided machinery—over 2,240 units for road construction—might be exploited for personal gain rather than public benefit.

He questioned the assemblies’ ability to sustain the project, asking how they plan to fund fuel and maintenance for the equipment.

Despite acknowledging the positive aspect of seeing the machinery at Independence Square, Mr Agyapong remained skeptical about the practical and ethical management of the resources.

“Some members and those who will use it to work will also do so for their own benefit alone. They do not have any love for the country.

“I saw the machines at Independence Square, which was nice, but for them to take proper care of it is my big question. I want to ask, for the assembly, of all these machines, how are they going to get the money and buy fuel to construct the roads?

“What vision do DCEs, MCEs, and the assembly have to fuel those machines and use them to work? Most of the assemblies are not creative.,” he added.

MTN Ghana invested GH¢2.8 billion in capital expenditures to enhance network quality, expand coverage, and upgrade IT systems.

Voice revenue decreased by 3.1% year-on-year to GH¢1.7 billion due to customers choosing more affordable plans.

However, there was a 13.7% increase in voice usage minutes, thanks to initiatives aimed at boosting customer engagement and reducing churn.

The proportion of voice revenue in total service revenue dropped from 29.1% to 21.5% year-on-year, as focus shifted towards faster-growing segments.

Data revenue saw a robust growth of 55.0% year-on-year, reaching GH¢4.0 billion.

Konadu Rawlings took everything she gave me after I joined NPP – Maame Dokonu

Legendary Ghanaian actress, Grace Omaboe, widely known as Maame Dokono, has shared how former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings withdrew all support after discovering her affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In a recent interview, Maame Dokono recounted how her connection with Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings initially drew her into the inner circle of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Her political journey began during Jerry John Rawlings’ presidency when she aligned herself with the NDC and received considerable support, including sponsorship for her successful show, “By the Fire Side.”

Maame Dokono gained widespread fame from her role in the popular Akan drama series “Obra” on GTV and as the host of “By The Fire Side.”

However, her decision to join the NPP marked a significant turning point. After accepting an invitation from the NPP, Nana Konadu withdrew all her support and reclaimed everything she had previously provided.

Maame Dokono’s political allegiance shifted to the NPP in 2008 when Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo became the party’s flagbearer. This change, however, led to substantial backlash following the NPP’s electoral defeat, with many attributing the party’s loss to her.

As Maame Dokono approaches her 60th anniversary in the entertainment industry on September 7, 2024, celebrations will include a health screening event and the release of her book to mark this significant milestone.

Times are hard, be patient with your husbands – Prof Opoku-Agyemang to traders

The NDC’s vice-presidential candidate, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has urged women, especially those in trading, to be patient with their husbands who may be struggling to provide financial support due to economic challenges.

During her regional tour, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang spoke to market women in Dunkwa Mfoum, Central Region.

She recognized the economic difficulties faced by Ghanaians, particularly traders and small business owners, and reassured them that the NDC is aware of these issues.

She announced that the next NDC administration intends to establish the Women’s Development Bank, which will offer women easier access to credit without the need for collateral or high interest rates.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang emphasized that the Women’s Development Bank is part of a broader set of measures the NDC plans to implement to improve women’s lives in Ghana. She projected that over one million women would benefit from this initiative, which aims to provide loans to bolster their businesses and enhance their economic opportunities.

“Most of the time, when you are unable to get credit from the financial institutions to support your trade, you turn to your husbands for help, but they cannot help because they are either out of jobs or their businesses are not doing well due to the economic difficulties in the country.”

“Be patient with them because it is not their fault. The poor economic management has created all this hardship,” she said.

Tutuka residents halt 3-day Demo against Newmont

Residents of Tutuka in the Asutifi North District, Ahafo Region, have called off their three-day protest against Newmont at Kenyasi.

The decision to suspend the demonstration follows the intervention of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which addressed concerns over unpaid resettlement funds. The protesters had been demanding GHS 21 million from the gold mining company for resettlement.

The protest pause came after discussions involving the Ministry, local chiefs, the Ahafo Regional Minister, and the Asutifi North District Chief Executive.

Nana Anim Dankwah, the Saamanhene of Kenyasi No. 1, conveyed the Ministry’s message to the protesters.

He stated that after a meeting with the Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources and Newmont’s management in Accra, the Ministry will soon engage with the company’s executives in Denver to ensure the funds are paid.

Dankwah promised that the chiefs would apply pressure on Newmont to secure the payment and encouraged residents to stay patient while waiting for the outcome of the Ministry’s efforts.

Nana Kwabena Amoateng, a leader among the protesters, confirmed the suspension of the protest but warned that demonstrations would resume if Newmont does not meet their demands within the promised timeframe.

Amoateng also mentioned that the Ahafo Regional Coordinating Council has pledged to reimburse the costs incurred during the protest.

  • Nigeria: Curfew imposed in Kano after protests over prices turn violent

Nigeria: Curfew imposed in Kano after protests over prices turn violent

A curfew has been implemented in Kano, Nigeria’s second-largest state, following protests against high living costs that were reportedly overtaken by vandals engaging in extensive looting and property damage, according to the governor’s office.

On the first day of nationwide demonstrations, Kano saw the largest crowds, causing numerous businesses to close.

Protesters across major cities chanted slogans like “We are hungry.”

In response to the large crowds, police in Kano city deployed live ammunition, tear gas, and hot water to disperse thousands of demonstrators, resulting in four people being hospitalized.

Protesters had previously set tires ablaze outside the residence of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and looters had broken into a nearby warehouse, carrying away 25-liter cartons of vegetable oil and mattresses. Many in Kano were seen with these yellow cartons of cooking oil.

The newly imposed curfew aims to halt the protests and requires all residents to stay indoors.

According to the 2006 census, Kano state had a population of 9.4 million, though current estimates suggest it may be around 20 million.

The protests, planned to last 10 days, were organized via social media and were inspired by recent successful protests in Kenya that led to the reversal of a tax increase.

Governor Yusuf’s spokesman stated that while the protests in Kano were initially peaceful, the curfew was necessary to “restore order and ensure the safety of our communities” because of “rampant looting, destruction of property and violence” unleashed by “thugs”.

In Abuja, a court instructed protesters to confine their demonstrations to the National Stadium on the city’s outskirts.

However, when protesters began moving into the city center on Thursday morning, police used tear gas to disrupt the march, causing traffic issues.

Security forces have been stationed at key locations within the capital and surrounding towns, where even banks are closed.

In Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub, protesters chanted “ole,” meaning “thief” in Yoruba, targeting President Bola Tinubu and his administration.

The anger is largely directed at Tinubu’s removal of a fuel subsidy, announced immediately during his May 2023 inauguration, which led to soaring fuel prices and increased costs for other goods.

Abiodun Sanusi, a protester in Abuja, stated, “Top on our demand is the subsidy removal. The government should reverse that decision”.

Protesters are also calling for extensive reforms in Nigeria’s electoral system and judiciary.

Despite government appeals for patience to allow time for policies to take effect, protesters like Kingsley Uadiale argue that hunger is driving the demonstrations.

Mr Uadiale criticized the administration’s decision to purchase new planes for Tinubu and his deputy, Kashim Shettima, as a sign of insensitivity.

“Hunger is the reason why we’re all here. You can’t beat a baby and ask the baby not to cry.”

“You can’t tell us to be patient and you’re acquiring a private jet,” he added.

Dabiraoluwa Adeyinka, an activist in Lagos, emphasized that the protests aim to reverse the price hikes on essential goods. “If they don’t yield, we will continue to protest,” she told the BBC.

  • NPP MP for Gushegu may lose his seat in December polls – Global InfoAnalytics

A new poll by Global Info Analytics suggests that Hassan Tampuli, the current Member of Parliament for Gushegu and Deputy Minister of Transport, could face a defeat in the upcoming 2024 Parliamentary elections.

According to the poll, Yussif Malimali of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is leading with 56.5% of the vote, while Tampuli is behind with 41.9%.

The survey highlights a significant shift, with 12% of voters who supported Tampuli in 2020 now backing Malimali. Additionally, 75% of new voters, including those who did not participate in the last election, are supporting Malimali.

Executive Director of Global Info Analytics, Mussa Dankwa, discussed the findings on Channel One TV’s Citiuation Room and suggested that Tampuli should focus on addressing his campaign’s weaknesses, such as understanding voter demographics and key issues.

Dankwa noted “In the questionnaire, we asked voters, ‘Who did you vote for in the last parliamentary election?’ So you have those who said Malimali, those who said Tampuli. Some said they didn’t vote and others said they would not disclose how they voted. So we looked at those who said they voted for Tampuli in 2020. We realised that twelve per cent of them had switched their votes for Malimali.”

“Among those who said they didn’t vote in the last election which includes older voters and first-time voters, largely, 75% of them are voting for the NDC candidate, which is Malimali.”

According to Mr Majid, he had taken the gun from one of these students and was posing for photos when it accidentally discharged, injuring 20-year-old Abdullah Abdul Somed.

Mr Somed, who was struck in the arm, is now receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

In connection with the incident, two additional students are being questioned. School authorities are working with the police to locate the other students involved and to recover the firearm.

  • Not even a dollar has been paid to Service Ghana Auto for spare parts – Okoe-Boye replies Ablakwa

Minister of Health, Bernard Okoe-Boye clarified a recent press statement, stating that the $10 million mentioned is yet to be paid to Service Ghana Auto Limited for spare parts and maintenance of state-owned ambulances.

Speaking on Thursday, August 1, 2024, Okoe-Boye cited information from a Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, confirming that no payment has been made despite the issuance of a Letter of Credit.

The Deputy Governor indicated that payment would only occur once the company fulfills its agreement.

“I spoke to one of the Deputy Governors of the Bank of Ghana who told me that not even a dollar has been given to the service provider. She said that it is actually a letter of credit and that it is when the provider has actually supplied the parts to certain tunes and execute the work that they are empowered to pay for the work done. So the governor made me understand that they have it with but haven’t paid.

“From the controller to the BoG, all these trails that our state actors should be willing to give information. I deliberately didn’t allow my PR team to put this in the earlier release because I believed that the BoG if called upon should be able to provide this information,” he said.

His clarification comes as Service Ghana Auto Limited responded to claims by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu.

In a statement seen by GhanaWeb, SGAGL refuted Ablakwa’s allegations of illegality in the $34.9 million payment for the purchase and fitting of spare parts on 307 government ambulances.

The company denied the MP’s assertion that the contract was awarded by Akufo-Addo without competitive tendering, explaining that it was one of 16 companies that bid for the contract in 2018.

SGAGL was selected as part of a consortium of seven companies due to their ability to provide the required services at a relatively low price.

“SGAGL is an SPV of a consortium of seven companies that participated in a competitive procurement process, not sole-sourced, and was adjudged on merit to procure and provide after-sales service and maintenance for 307 Mercedes Benz Sprinter ambulances for the National Ambulance Service (NAS).”

“A total of 16 companies participated, including the seven companies that eventually formed the Consortium during the pre-tender workshop round. The companies that formed the consortium included Luxury World Auto Group Limited, Elok Consult, RDC Company Limited, Beft Engineering Works Limited, Prestige Era Company Limited, Bluemix Company Limited, and Quality Supply and Builders Company Limited,” the statement read.

In an earlier statement, the Ministry of Health confirmed a $10 million payment to the company for ambulance maintenance.

“The Ministry of Health would like to act only upon the request of the Health Ministry after the Ministry of Special Development Initiatives was dissolved to clarify that the Service Provider, Ghana Auto Group Limited, has not been paid an amount of $34.9 million as widely reported.”

“The Ministry of Health is committed to ensuring a sustainable maintenance regime for all fleets procured for the National Ambulance Service to provide reliable, efficient, and safe emergency medical services,” a statement issued by the Ministry read in part.

NDC’s campaign launch is a sign of desperation – NPP

Former Central Regional Minister, Kwamena Duncan has described the National Campaign Launch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Tamale as a reaction driven by “panic”.

Mr Duncan argues that the NDC’s anxiety stems from the increasing support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the northern regions, attributed to the numerous development projects under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

In an interview on Peace FM on Wednesday, July 31, 2024, Duncan suggested that the NDC’s event in Tamale was an attempt to counteract the growing popularity of NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who has been drawing large crowds to his constituency campaigns in the north.

He stated, “Everyone who is being truthful would tell you that the NDC event that took place in Tamale on Saturday was a panic reaction. If you compare the number of people who attended the NDC’s National Campaign Launch and its organization to the constituency-by-constituency campaign of Bawumia, no one would tell you that there is great fear in the NDC and in John Dramani Mahama.

“This is why they went to hold the event we saw in Tamale on Saturday,” he said in Twi.

Duncan also criticized the NDC for failing to present clear policy alternatives during their campaign launch.

He noted that while the NDC’s flagbearer promised not to mislead Ghanaians, there were no specific policy proposals outlined to address the needs of the citizens.

Reinstate Prof Johnson Nyarko Boampong as UCC VC – UTAG-UCC to management

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UCC) at the University of Cape Coast has criticized the University Council’s decision to terminate Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor.

UTAG-UCC argues that the Council Chair’s action is unilateral and invalid, as it conflicts with ongoing court proceedings that have restrained the Council from making such a decision.

“The letter from the Council Chair dated 31st July 2024, stating the termination of the Vice-Chancellor’s
renewed term, is improper and without merit. The claims that the renewal breaches the University’s Statutes and the Constitution are unfounded.

“The renewal was conducted with full consideration of all legal and statutory requirements. On this basis, the action of the Council Chair is arbitrary, capricious, and devoid of any legal justification. We reject it outrightly.”

The association contends that the renewal of Prof. Boampong’s term was conducted in full compliance with legal and statutory requirements. They describe the Council Chair’s actions as arbitrary, unjustified, and harmful to the university’s governance.

UTAG-UCC has called for the withdrawal of the termination letter, accusing the Chair of acting in bad faith and making unilateral decisions detrimental to the university’s governance.

The association has urged the government to remove the Chairman from his position and assured the university community that it will closely monitor the situation and take necessary steps to safeguard the institution’s integrity and the rights of its members.

UTAG-UCC stresses the importance of adhering to legal and statutory frameworks, warning that any deviation from these standards will be met with resistance to ensure justice and fairness.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang is a misfit for politics – Allotey Jacobs

The former Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Allotey Jacobs, has expressed strong criticism of Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the party’s running mate.

Mr Jacobs contends that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang lacks the essential qualities of a seasoned politician.

During a discussion on Peace FM, Mr Jacobs remarked that Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s performance at the NDC’s campaign launch in Tamale revealed her struggle to transition from an academic to a political role.

He argued that her public speaking was not suited for a political platform.

“One is born with the ability to speak on political platform, that art cannot be learnt. Among the persons who spoke during the NDC campaign launch, the only person who could rap the crowd was former President John Mahama. The rest do not know how to speak on political platforms. The running mate should not have been allowed to speak.

“I respect that woman a lot but she is not a politician. She is a square peg in a round hole, I am telling you the truth. She portrayed herself as a lecturer on a political platform speaking about morale issues. It was not good,” he said.

The NDC launched its campaign on July 27, 2024, aiming to challenge the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and address the country’s economic difficulties in the upcoming December 7 elections.

I will ban mining in forest reserves – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has promised to halt all mining activities in forest reserves if he wins the December 7 election.

Mahama criticized the practice of mining in these protected areas, emphasizing the need to preserve Ghana’s forests.

In a recent address to chiefs and elders in the Central Region, he underlined that these forests, some containing trees as old as 700 years, must be protected for future generations.

“We are going to stop all mining in forest reserves. Some of those trees existed when our ancestors were here. Some of those trees are 700 years old in those forest reserves. And our ancestors didn’t cut them. Our ancestors left them for us.

“We are going to cut them and what are we going to leave for our children? Savannah, desertification, destroyed environment. And so we must preserve the forest. Yes, it is attractive to get as much gold as we can but that is like cutting your nose to spite your face.”

UCC VC has not been sacked – Management

The University of Cape Coast (UCC) has refuted claims that Prof. Johnson Nyarko Boampong’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor has been terminated.

A letter allegedly signed by Prof. Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, Chairman of the University Council, suggested that Prof. Boampong’s tenure had ended.

However, UCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Major Kofi Baah-Bentum, clarified in a statement on Thursday that the University Council has not met to make any decisions regarding the Vice-Chancellor’s position. T

he most recent Council meeting on July 30, 2024, did not address this matter.

UCC is advising the university community and the public to disregard the termination notice.

“Council has not met to discuss or take such a decision and that, at its last meeting held on Tuesday, 30th July 2024, records available indicate that matters discussed and decided upon did not include the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure.

NPP PC for Twifo Atti-Morkwa remanded on alleged fraud charges

The Assin Kyekyewere District Court has remanded the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Parliamentary candidate for Twifo Atti-Morkwa constituency, Ebenezer Dwamena, into police custody.

Dwamena is charged with conspiracy to defraud by false pretence under section 131 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act 1960, Act 29.

According to the constituency communication officer, Dwamena referred friends to a car dealer after he successfully purchased a vehicle from the same dealer.

However, the dealer failed to deliver the vehicle after receiving payment, prompting the buyers to take the matter to court, which led to Dwamena’s remand.

Her Ladyship Sophia Priscila Yeboa Esq., the presiding judge, remanded Dwamena into police custody and forwarded the case to the Attorney General’s Office for further advice.

NPP Twifo Praso communication officer, Paa Amoako, stated that Dwamena was not directly involved in the fraudulent activities.

He recounted that Dwamena had guided his friends to the car dealer after purchasing a car himself. Despite making payments, the buyers never received the vehicle, causing Dwamena to have the dealer arrested.

However, due to the significant amount of money involved, the Praso Magistrate Court transferred the case to Fosu.

The judge decided to remand Dwamena and the two buyers for two weeks to allow for further investigation before proceeding with the hearing.

The communication officer for NPP in Twifi Praso, Paa Amoako told the media that “Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena is not involved in the case. The situation unfolded when Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena purchased a car for his personal use. Two of his friends expressed interest in a similar car, and Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena guided them to the place where he bought his. After negotiating the price of the car, they arranged to make some payments through the bank in installments. However, obtaining the car became problematic as the seller consistently asked them to return at a later time. This worried Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena because he was the one who had introduced them to the seller.”

“Consequently, Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena had the car seller arrested, and he was subsequently remanded, but the buyers never received the car. Due to the large sum of money involved, the Praso Magistrate Court transferred the case to Fosu. The court convened to hear the case yesterday. Upon their arrival, the judge did not allow their lawyers to speak. He stated that due to the large amount of money involved, all three individuals, namely Ebenezer Obeng Dwamena and the two other car buyers, should be remanded for two weeks for investigations to be conducted before the case is heard.”

  • UCC Vice-Chancellor sacked

    UCC Vice-Chancellor sacked

The Governing Council of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has removed Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong’s from his position as Vice-Chancellor.

Appointed in June 2020 for a four-year term starting August 2020, Prof. Boampong’s tenure officially concluded on July 31, 2024.

Despite an earlier claim of a two-year extension to his term, the Governing Council has declared this extension null and void, according to citinewsroom.com.

In a statement signed by UCC’s Governing Council Chairman, Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, it stated “Please note that the purported renewal/extension of your appointment as Vice-Chancellor at the Council’s meeting on the 28th of July 2023, for a term of two (2) years effective 1st August 2024, is void and consequently same is revoked as it breaches the University’s Statutes on renewal of appointment of the Vice-Chancellor.”

The notice further explained that while extensions to Prof. Boampong’s appointment are permissible, no official extension decision has been made.

“While your appointment may be extended by 2 years at a time up to a maximum of 5 years beyond your retirement age by contract, as provided in Article 199 clause (4) above, there has not yet been any such contractual extension, and such extension is applicable only to your appointment as a member of the University in general, but not applicable to your position as the Vice-Chancellor, since the University’s Statutes has placed a limit on same in Statute 8.2.”

Prof. Boampong has been encouraged to submit a formal application if he wishes to continue in his role.

“You may, however, apply to Council for its consideration in line with laid down procedure for the purpose of renewing your term as Vice-Chancellor for a period not exceeding your retirement age and which does not breach the Constitution and the University’s Statutes,” he is reported to have stated.

Fire engulfs Kwadaso market, over 40 shops destroyed

A massive fire has devastated parts of the Kwadaso market in the Ashanti Region, destroying over 40 shops and their contents.

The blaze, which started in the early hours of Thursday, August 1, 2024, has led to substantial losses for traders at the M line of the market.

The inferno consumed shops and goods, including fabrics, footwear, frozen foods, plantains, yams, and more.

Traders are expressing their despair over the destruction of their livelihood.

In an interview with the Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti Regional Fire Service, he indicated that the blaze was controlled after two fire appliances, a fire tender, and a water tanker were deployed to the scene.

He lamented that access to the market was challenging because of some obstructions and blockages at the market entrance and the road leading to the fire scene, causing a delay in response.

He, however, mentioned that investigations are underway to ascertain the cause of the fire.

“The fire affected 40 stalls and their contents, which include frozen foods, provisions and other stuff. There were no casualties. When we got there, the fire was well alight. As I indicated initially, it was well alight.

“The entrance of the market had some obstructions around it, so the doors could not open fully, and the gate not open fully. Access to the scene of the fire was a challenge because there were a lot of obstructions on the road, which also affected our response.”

One trader explained to Citi News, “All our plantain have been burnt, we are at a great loss, GHC4,000 to GHC5,000 plantain all destroyed. We bought the plantain on credit and we have to pay, we don’t know how to go about it. Those who gave us the planatian on credit will definitely come after us, they wouldn’t care. We really need help, myself and my colleagues. I’m 62 years old, this is the only business I can do, I don’t have the energy to do any other business.”

Another trader, Adwoa Connie lamented, “I sell fabrics, shoes, hair scarves and other kinds of stuff. I took a loan, I had a call that all my fabrics were destroyed, and I’m appealing to the government to come to my aid so that I can restart the business, I’m 71 years old and my kids are in school, there is no help anywhere.

“This is the only job I can do. I got new stock just Wednesday and everything is gone. I have kids too, the money lost could be over a million cedis. I’m pleading with the government to come to my aid.”

The Ashanti Regional Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer reported that the fire was eventually brought under control with the deployment of two fire engines, a fire tender, and a water tanker.

However, access to the market was hindered by obstructions at the entrance and along the roads leading to the fire scene, which delayed the response.

The officer added that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

V/R: Retired pastor allegedly takes his life at Akatsi

A retired pastor from the New Covenant Apostolic Church, Pastor Michael Ahiago, is reported to have taken his own life by hanging.

The deceased, believed to be in his early 70s and a father of five, was found hanging from a mango tree in front of his home early Wednesday morning at around 5:30 a.m.

The widow, Mrs. Beatrice Ahiago, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that her husband left the house unnoticed while she was preparing porridge for sale.

She mentioned that he was at home with the family the night before and showed no signs of depression.

“I got up this dawn to prepare my porridge for sale without having any knowledge of my husband’s departure from home until we were told of the incident,” she said.

Apostle Paul Gidigasu, General Secretary of Apostolic Vision Church International, who arrived at the scene, noted that Ahiago was an active member of the Akatsi Senior Ministers Association until his death.

However, he was unable to determine the cause of the tragic event, adding: “We are encouraging the widow and the family to be strong in the Lord in these difficult times.”

When the GNA visited the scene, many residents, including church members, chiefs, and pastors, had gathered at the deceased’s home to witness the aftermath of the incident.

EC’s three-day mop-up voter registration exercise begins today

The Electoral Commission (EC) will conduct a mop-up voter registration drive starting Thursday, August 1, 2024, through Saturday, August 3, 2024.

This three-day event is intended to provide an opportunity for those who have turned 18 since the recent Limited Voter Registration, as well as individuals who missed the earlier registration, to be added to the voter roll.

The EC aims to register between 50,000 and 70,000 new voters during this period. Registration will be available at 268 district offices, 26 public universities, and 41 prison centers nationwide.

Earlier this year, between May 7 and 29, the EC’s Limited Voter Registration added 778,447 new voters to the register, including 408,332 females (52.45%) and 370,115 males (47.55%).

The provisional voter register now stands at 18,681,366. To support the online registration process, the EC has engaged Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) for reliable internet connectivity.

Applicants need either a Ghana Card or a Ghana Passport. If these documents are unavailable, two registered voters must act as guarantors.

Each guarantor can only support up to 10 applicants, and those who have already guaranteed for 10 voters in the past cannot do so again for this mop-up exercise, according to Regulation 2 of CI 91, as amended by CI 126.

Political parties are permitted to send representatives to monitor the registration process.

The EC has advised these observers to act professionally to ensure the process runs smoothly. Additionally, parents and guardians are encouraged to ensure that children under 18 do not attempt to register.

Registration centers will be open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily throughout the exercise.

Efforts to release govt lands list are being blocked by Lands Commission – Ablakwa

The Government Assurances Committee of Parliament has criticized the Lands Commission for its failure to provide data on public lands and their use over time.

The Committee argues that this data is crucial for addressing fraudulent practices, such as the improper registration of government lands as private properties.

At its meeting on Wednesday, July 31, the committee chairman, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed frustration over the unsuccessful attempts to obtain these documents from the Lands Commission over the past two years.

“If this data is put together and provided, it will help all of us. These instances of government lands being registered as private lands and the fraud that is going on at the Lands Commission, as exposed by the Soul Enquirer, the only way to stem this, to prevent this, to forestall this, is to have the data, to put the data together.

“That is why I am clear in my mind that there are elements at the Lands Commission who don’t want the Ghanaian people to have this data.”

In response, Samuel Abdulai Jinapor, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, explained the delay.

“The Lands Commission for all these years has been operating manually and it is just recently that we have started making efforts to digitise the records of the Lands Commission.

“The information I have from the Commission since I gave them the instructions to compile this list is that compiling the list from the 16 regions of the Lands Commission across the country from 1993 to now is an extraordinary undertaking and therefore they have not been able to put it all together as yet. And so I am unable to provide it now, but there is work in progress.”

Protect Achimota Forest by reversing E.I. 144 legislation – CSOs to govt

Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) involved in climate change advocacy have urged both the Executive and Parliament to overturn legislation allowing development within forest reserves.

These groups demand the immediate suspension of Executive Instrument 144 and Legislative Instrument 246 (2), which have declassified the Achimota Forest and other reserves throughout the country, to protect the few remaining reserves.

Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, argued on Citi FM’s Citi Breakfast Show that declassifying forest reserves goes against the nation’s best interests and should not be permitted.

“The government acquired lands for horticultural purposes and not for commercial purposes and so we need to have an audit and those structures on Parks and Gardens lands must be removed immediately. We are asking the Cabinet to rescind E.I 144 to reverse the declassification of the Achimota Forest and also, Parliament must reverse LI 246 (2) because they are not in the interest of Ghana or Ghanaians.”

“The colonial administration had the good sense to have forest reserves for posterity, knowing the value of forests and now, with all our education, we want to convert our protective forest reserves into developments. There is an increase in lung diseases due to all these developments,” Awula Serwaa further told Caleb Kudah on Thursday.

E.I. 144 involves the return of 361 acres of the Achimota Forest to its original custodians, the Owoo family.

Daryl Bosu, Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana, has urged the Lands Minister to overturn this legislation and halt any attempts to reclassify forest reserves.

Fix our faulty traffic lights in 7 days or face our wrath – Anyaa residents ‘threaten’ govt

Residents near Anyaa School Junction in the Ga South municipality have given authorities a one-week deadline to repair the streetlights and non-functioning traffic lights in the area.

This ultimatum follows a protest held by the residents on Thursday morning, prompted by numerous fatalities on the Awoshie-Ablekuma-Pokuase Highway due to the non-functional traffic lights.

The protestors pointed out that the traffic lights have been out of order for nearly three years.

Their demonstration was triggered by a tragic accident on Wednesday, July 31, where two pedestrians were struck by speeding vehicles at the dangerous intersection.

The community insists that the broken traffic lights have created a hazardous situation for both drivers and pedestrians, greatly increasing the likelihood of accidents.

They are demanding immediate repairs to the traffic control system to improve safety and prevent further tragedies.

Construction on Dawurampong/Apam junction road halted due to debts to contractors – DCE

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Gomoa West, Bismark Basie Nkum, has announced that the construction of the Dawurampong to Apam Junction road in the Central Region has been halted due to outstanding payments to the contractor.

Although sections of the Apam-Ankamu road have been updated, the Dawurampong-Apam road reconstruction, which began during the Kufuor administration, remains unfinished.

Work on this project was put on hold until 2017 and has now stalled again.

This situation follows recent protests by taxi drivers at Apam Junction, who have called on authorities to address the issue and restart the roadwork.

Mr. Nkum told Citi News that he is in discussions with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to resolve the payment issue and get the contractors back to work.

“The road from Dawurampong to Ankamu, which is Apam Junction, that road has a history dating back to 2008, when the NPP government led by former President J.A. Kufuor decided to reconstruct the road. Unfortunately, the then-party in power lost the election, and so from 2009 and 2016, it was expected that the work would continue, but that did not happen.

“From 2017 up to 2021, the portion of the road has been stalled from Gomoa Asikuma down to Gomoa Danchira. Then drainage had been done that ought to be paid, that has not been paid yet and that is why they have not continued from Danchira portion to Apam junction.

“I think efforts have been made to make the contractor return to the site, but I cannot state tentatively and put my finger on a day that tomorrow they are coming,” Mr Bismark Basie Nkum stated.

The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has highlighted a concerning rise in online blackmail incidents.

According to the report, 226 victims lost GH₵112,209 from Jan to June 2024.

In its statement, the CSA has advised the public to be cautious when accepting friend requests from strangers and to use robust passwords to protect their personal information.

The CSA’s alert from March 2024 had already noted a dramatic 254% increase in online blackmail cases compared to the previous year.

Call parliament back into session – Afenyo-Markin petitions Bagbin

Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has formally requested Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin to reconvene Parliament.

This request comes in response to the Majority caucus’s dissatisfaction with the Speaker’s decision to adjourn the session indefinitely on Tuesday, July 30, 2024.

In a letter dated Wednesday, July 31, Afenyo-Markin emphasized the necessity of resuming parliamentary sessions to address pressing government issues.

These include discussions on the Financing Agreement between the Government of Ghana and the International Development Association, tax exemptions for beneficiaries under the One District, One Factory Programme, the Ghana Financial Stability Fund, and various bills.

Afenyo-Markin reminded Speaker Bagbin that Parliament was adjourned sine die on July 30, 2024, when these critical items were scheduled for consideration.

He stressed that the urgency of these matters demands that Parliament reconvene to fulfill its constitutional duties and serve the interests of the Ghanaian people.

“Mr Speaker will recall that Parliament adjourned sine die on Tuesday, 30 July 2014, at which time the aforementioned items had been duly advertised and scheduled for consideration. The urgency of these matters necessitates our reconvening to fulfil our constitutional mandate and serve the interests of the Ghanaian people.”

“We wish to emphasise that this requisition is made in the utmost good faith and in the national interest, to enable the Government to discharge its constitutional and democratic obligations to the people of Ghana.

“The matters outlined herein are of pressing importance and require the urgent attention of Parliament,” he added.

Govt to equip every district assembly with road machinery – Bawumia

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced a major new initiative to equip Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with earth-moving machinery for road construction.

  • Pure thievery! – Dr Amoako reacts to $34.9m ambulance spare parts deal linked to Akufo-Addo’s children

Pure thievery! – Dr Amoako reacts to $34.9m ambulance spare parts deal linked to Akufo-Addo’s children

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Richard Amoako Baah, has condemned a recent $34.9 million deal for ambulance spare parts that has been linked to the children of president Akufo-Addo.

Speaking to TV3, the economist did not mince words, he labeled the transaction as “thievery”.

He questioned the necessity of the deal, highlighting that it is fundamentally flawed to set up a company to service new vehicles.

Dr. Amoako Baah argued that new vehicles should come with a warranty that can be negotiated with the supplier, negating the need for such a costly setup.

“They know that they are not going to do anything. First of all, if you buy a new vehicle, you don’t build a company to service it. You get warranty so you could negotiate. The company has another seven days. You need a warranty, the cars are in Ghana. Therefore, you have to build a plan there to service the vehicle. Very simple.

“You don’t go and borrow money to set that up. If you buy a fifty-four million worth of vehicle ambulances, they have to come and set it up. This is all false. This is falsehood. This is thievery, very simple. That’s what it is. Thievery, you can’t put it any other way. What purpose are you going to the new vehicles? When you buy a new vehicle, it breaks down. You don’t sell it to yourself. They give you a warranty. And if you’re buying from them, they will say there’s no warranty on it. Then you don’t buy it,” he added.

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has sparked fresh controversy over the procurement of ambulances under the Akufo-Addo administration.

In a recent Facebook post, Ablakwa claimed that President Akufo-Addo’s son-in-law, Stephen Okoro, played a key role in what he calls a “stinking” $34.9 million ambulance spare parts deal.

Ablakwa’s post reads, “Unimpeachable, irrefutable and irreproachable parliamentary oversight has finally smoked out the hidden characters behind the procurement of President Akufo-Addo’s flagship 307 ambulances.”

According to Ablakwa, the same individuals involved in the controversial spare parts deal were awarded opaque contracts worth $54.3 million to procure the ambulances.

He continues, “For the avoidance of doubt, the same President Akufo-Addo’s daughters’ business partners and close associates were the same guys hurriedly selected to import the ambulances under extremely shady and disgraceful circumstances.”

Ablakwa alleged that the procurement process was significantly inflated, asserting that the ambulances, which should have cost $24.56 million based on unit prices, were instead purchased for $54.3 million—an inflation of $29.74 million.

His investigation uncovered that companies such as Elok Consult and Services Limited, BEFT Engineering Works Limited, and others, which were established shortly after Akufo-Addo took office in 2017, were involved in the procurement process.

In response to the allegations about the spare parts deal, the Health Ministry has defended the process, stating that all procurement activities adhere strictly to legal frameworks and are subject to rigorous auditing to ensure transparency and accountability in public spending.

Ablakwa’s revelations have ignited public outcry and calls for a deeper investigation into the procurement practices.

  • Gabby Otchere Darko texted, phoned me twice me after “Agyapade3 document” was aired on TV – Capt Smart

Gabby Otchere Darko texted, phoned me twice me after “Agyapade3 document” was aired on TV – Capt Smart

The Morning Show Host of Onua TV (Captain Smart), Blessed Godsbrain Smart, has revealed that a notable member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, called and sent him text messages after his team aired the controversial “Agyapade3 document” live on TV.

In a broadcast, Captain Smart, who is renowned for his outspoken nature, pledged to expose the NPP for mishandling Ghana’s economy.

According to him, until the party rectifies the anomalies, he will continue to highlight their failures and hold them accountable.

“What everyone is scared to talk about is what we at Onua TV say with ease. We are the only people who projected the Agyapade3 document on TV. Gabby-Otchere called me twice concerning that but I was unable to answer the call. He then left me a text message and then left me another message on WhatsApp.

“The Agyapade3 document is a topic where people shun away, but I and my team have made it a national interest. The reality is that the country is being destroyed under these people,”he added.

There has been a hullabaloo evolving around the ‘Agyapade3 document’ in both traditional and social media spaces in Ghana.

It first garnered attention during the time of one of Ghana’s statesmen, Joseph Kwame Kyeretwie Boakye Danquah (J.B Danquah).

The document is alleged to outline a comprehensive strategy by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) designed to elevate and sustain the influence of the Akyem people across all sectors of Ghana’s economy.

A section of the populace have claimed that certain ideas and systems implemented by the Akufo-Addo-led government are in line with  the book.

However, the NPP has on several occasions refuted these assertions, labeling them as diabolic plans
by certain individuals who are against the Akyem people.

Speaking at the Akyem Abuakwa State Council meeting, Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin stated that the Ofori Panin Fie was more prominent before Akufo-Addo’s tenure and has not accomplished anything exceptional in the past 25 years to set themselves above others.

“We saw this during the period of J.B Danquah and we’re seeing this now. In and around October 2016, about a few months before the election, the same document known as the ‘Akyem Project’ was in circulation. The focus of that was to fan hatred between Okyeman and Asanteman to undermine the electoral efforts of Nana Akufo-Addo. Unfortunately for them, it came too late to the election.”

“This diabolic plan was revised in 2019. In the year 2020 when the Agyapa business became a political issue, the book suddenly metamorphosed into ‘Agyapadie’”.

Mahama lauded Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s achievements, noting that she led transformative changes in Ghana’s education sector, providing valuable opportunities for many young people.

As Minister of Education, she oversaw the construction of more than 2,000 school projects across the country, including new classrooms, teacher housing, and school furniture.

Her initiatives significantly reduced the number of schools operating under trees and improved learning environments.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang also introduced the progressively free education system in alignment with Ghana’s 1992 constitution, established the E-Block Community Day Secondary Schools, and worked to eliminate the shift system at the basic school level.

In her remarks, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang pledged to work diligently to ensure an NDC victory in the upcoming elections.

  • Mother allegedly beats 15-year-old son to death for stealing GHS80

A 15-year-old boy has tragically lost his life in Kasoa American Town after allegedly being beaten by his mother for stealing GH¢80.00.

Reports indicate that the boy’s mother, who runs a well-known bakery in the area, noticed her GH¢80.00 missing and suspected her son of theft over the weekend.

She reportedly beat him and threatened to report him to the police if he did not confess.

Unfortunately, the boy passed away in a taxi while being transported to the police station.

On Monday, GNA visited the boy’s home, where relatives were observed mourning in traditional attire. They chose not to comment on the situation but confirmed that the incident had been reported to the Kasoa Divisional Police Command.

However, further inquiries at the police station revealed no record of such a report. Additionally, the mother’s bakery was found closed during the GNA visit.

The boy’s body has been taken to the Mother and Child Hospital in CP, a suburb of Kasoa.

Akan will be Ghana’s official language if I become president – Bernard Mornah

The presidential hopeful for the People’s National Convention (PNC), Bernard Mornah, has revealed his intention to establish Akan as the official language of Ghana if he is elected on December 7.

During an interview on Adom TV’s Badwam morning show, Mr Mornah outlined a multilingual language policy.

According to him, Akan would be the national language, Ga would be predominantly used in Accra, and Hausa would be the chosen language for regional communication across West Africa.

He also proposed that English and French be made optional under his leadership.

“My government will have three languages, one is Akan as the national language. And if you are in Accra, Ga the mother tongue will be the focus and Hausa can be spoken across West Africa. English and French will be optional,” he said.

Bernard Mornah contended that Ghana’s dependence on English, a foreign language, as the official language has impeded national progress.

He advocated for adopting an indigenous language like Akan, suggesting that it could foster greater cultural unity and development.

Mr Mornah points to developed nations like Japan, France, China, Germany, Belgium, and India, which have embraced their native languages officially, as examples of how this approach can benefit a country.

Mahama will legalize ‘pragyia’ if you vote for him – Fmr Minister to operators

Former Minister of Transport, Mike Hammah, has urged tricycle (Pragyia) operators to support John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming presidential election.

Mr Hammah promised that under an NDC administration, tricycle operations would be legalized and regulated.

Speaking at the launch of the Central Regional Chapter and executives of the National Union of Tricycle Operators of Ghana in Kasoa, Mr Hammah outlined the NDC’s plan to formalize tricycle services.

He assured that Mahama’s government would introduce legislation to govern their use and provide necessary training for operators.

Hammah emphasized that tricycles have become an essential part of transportation in Ghana, and only a leader who prioritizes youth and employment, like Mahama, can bring about the needed changes.

The National Secretary of Tricycle Operators in Ghana, Hamza Hafiz, echoed Hammah’s sentiments, noting that tricycles have significantly contributed to reducing unemployment and crime, particularly in Kasoa.

Mr Hafiz called on the government to officially recognize and support tricycles as a vital mode of transport, especially in northern regions.

“Aside from that, if the government could allow importing them into the country, then it’s just fair that we are allowed to operate and our activities regulated.”

V/R: Man found dead at Adidome

A 40-year-old fisherman and diver, Lotsu Godson, tragically drowned in the Volta River at Adidome in the Volta Region.

His body was discovered floating on the river on Monday, following a three-day search by his family.

Mr. Guggisberg Fiagbenu, the Assembly Member of Adidome Central and the deceased’s brother, confirmed to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that Lotsu Godson was in good health and had no known medical conditions that could have contributed to his drowning.

The family had been searching for him after his sudden disappearance until his body was eventually found.

The police were informed, and the body was recovered and taken to the morgue.

“The police were notified, and the body was removed and taken to the morgue, but the experts there indicated that it was necessary we bury him as soon as possible,” he noted.

Medical experts advised that a prompt burial was necessary.

“Our brother is an experienced fisherman and diver. He can dive and be underwater for many minutes. So, we’re all shocked, but there’s nothing to do now. He’s gone,” Guggisberg sobbed.

Guggisberg Fiagbenu expressed the family’s shock and grief, noting that Lotsu was an experienced fisherman and diver, capable of staying underwater for extended periods. The unexpected nature of his death has deeply affected both his family and friends.

The Assembly Member urged local fishermen to exercise caution during their river activities to prevent similar incidents in the future. According to the Adidome Police, there was no suspicion of foul play.

Following clearance from the Adidome Magistrate Court, the family proceeded with a nighttime burial of the deceased on Monday.
