Why will people beat, insult others just to have a seat in parliament? – Otumfuo to Bagbin

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has raised concerns about the widespread ambition to become Members of Parliament (MPs).

In a meeting with Parliament Speaker Alban S.K. Bagbin at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Sunday, June 30, 2024, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II questioned the reasons behind this strong desire, highlighting the extreme measures some individuals are willing to resort to, including insults and physical confrontations.

“Why is it that everyone wants to go to Parliament? What is there that people will beat others and insult people just to go to Parliament? This is something that you have to pay attention to,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said.

He also criticized the unrealistic pledges made by certain parliamentary candidates, emphasizing that MPs lack the necessary budgetary resources to fulfill such promises.

“As an MP, you don’t even have a budget, so why make promises to fix roads and other things that you know you cannot deliver?”

Bagbin is presently undertaking a three-day official tour of the Ashanti Region as part of a nationwide commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Fourth Republic.

30 illegal miners arrested by Forestry Commission at Tarkwa

The Rapid Response Team (RRT) and Forest Services Division (FSD) staff in the Tarkwa District of the Western Region have apprehended 19 illegal miners within the Bonsa River Forest Reserve.

In a statement from the Corporate Affairs and Media Relations office of the Forestry Commission, the arrests occurred on Friday, June 28, 2024, at Aboso North Range.

This follows an earlier operation on June 12, 2024, where 11 suspects were detained in the same forest reserve.

Equipped with water-pumping machines, shovels, and other handheld tools, the illegal miners had established tents and were operating day and night within the reserve.

The suspects have been handed over to the Tarkwa Police Command for further investigation and prosecution.

During the June 12 operation, 11 suspects, comprising 10 males and one female, were apprehended and subsequently remanded in prison custody. Their cases have been referred to the Attorney General’s Department for legal advice.

The statement also highlighted 21 pending illegal mining cases involving over 111 suspects apprehended by Forestry Commission officials across various forest reserves within the region

. These cases are at different stages of prosecution at Sekondi High Court 2 and Takoradi Circuit Court.

The statement urged the judiciary in the region to expedite action on all forest offense cases and issued a strong warning against illegal mining activities.

Additionally, the statement reported that FSD personnel and RRT members immobilized two excavators and one motorbike in the Apamprama Forest Reserve near Kobro, Bekwai District, Ashanti Region, on Friday, June 28, 2024.

The culprits fled upon the team’s arrival, and no arrests were made.

Illegal operators in the Apamprama Forest Reserve have reportedly shifted to nocturnal operations to evade detection by Commission officials, prompting increased night patrols and intelligence-led operations by staff.

The Forestry Commission personnel in the Bekwai Forest District are committed to combating illegal mining activities to safeguard forest and wildlife resources.

The statement concluded with a stern warning to illegal operators to refrain from entering the Apamprama Forest Reserve and other reserves to prevent further environmental degradation.

Heavy traffic on Accra-Kumasi Highway after trailer overturned

A trailer traveling from Burkina Faso to Accra has been involved in an accident at Asona, a town near Nkawkaw, the Eastern Region, off the main Accra-Kumasi Highway stretch.

The cause of the trailer overturning, which blocked the highway, remains unclear. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.

The accident has resulted in a significant traffic jam, leaving hundreds of travelers stranded for more than five hours.

Frustrated commuters speaking to Channel One News urged authorities to expedite the dualization of the Accra-Kumasi Highway to prevent similar situations in the future.

“So what I noticed on the road was a vehicle that had fallen off and blocked the main highway and that has led to this serious gridlock, those coming from the Accra side tried using the part of vehicles from Kumasi and vice versa and that is also part of what we are all witnessing here.

“I have been sitting in my car for more than two hours now, but people I enquired from said the gridlock started in the morning, I will suggest that the Accra Kumasi highway is dualized immediately because these single lanes have not been helpful over the years.”

  • More infants contracting HIV despite PMTCT initiative – NACP

More infants contracting HIV despite PMTCT initiative – NACP

The National AIDS Control Programme (NACP) has reported a rise in mother-to-child HIV infections, despite the Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT) initiative.

Dr. Stephen Ayisi-Addo, NACP Programme Manager, attributed this increase to inadequate testing and medication adherence among pregnant women, leading to ongoing transmission from mothers to their babies.

During the 2023 dissemination of National HIV estimates, Dr. Ayisi-Addo expressed concern over the persistent cases of newborns contracting HIV from their mothers.

The PMTCT initiative, led by NACP, the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), and other partners, aims to prevent HIV transmission from mothers to their babies. Under this intervention, pregnant women are tested for HIV during antenatal care visits, and those who test positive are given medication to protect their babies.

National HIV estimates revealed that 12,108 mothers aged 15 to 49 are receiving PMTCT treatment, while 13,445 mothers in the same age group need it.

Dr. Ayisi-Addo noted that many newborns contracting HIV are from mothers who missed testing during antenatal care visits. He emphasized the need to increase testing coverage, stating, “We are talking covering about 90 per cent of all ANC attendance for HIV testing, so those who come in late do not get the treatment to prevent the mother from transmission to the baby.

“We need to be able to improve the ANC testing coverage. We need to improve so that people will have supervised delivery on their routine services offered when pregnant women come to the facility,” he added.

He also highlighted the lack of adherence to medication among HIV-positive mothers as a cause of mother-to-child transmission. Despite testing and identification, not all mothers receive the necessary antiretroviral treatment.

Additionally, only 730 out of about 6,000 PMTCT facilities are providing antiretroviral drugs. In facilities without PMTCT coverage, pregnant women must be referred to other centers, but many refuse due to transportation issues. To address this, the NACP plans to decentralize antiretroviral therapy.

Postnatal transmission due to breastfeeding exposure remains a concern. The national response program has established strict infant feeding guidelines for HIV-positive mothers to prevent transmission, but adherence is low due to a lack of trained service providers.

Dr. Ayisi-Addo emphasized the program’s commitment to reducing mother-to-child transmission to 2 percent, the elimination target.

Dr. Stephen Atuahene, Director General of the GAC, stressed that strict adherence to treatment is crucial for viral suppression, which prevents perinatal transmission.

He urged HIV-positive women to achieve and maintain viral suppression before and during pregnancy, stating, “It is also the responsibility of the mother to adhere to treatment, maintain viral suppression status and avoid transmission.

“As long as you can do that, you have a better chance of averting transmission to your baby and so adherence is very crucial to all persons living with HIV and taking the medication. This is so important for mothers because every woman will want to have a healthy baby and therefore you have to avoid any risk that will expose your child to infection.”

Two children killed by unknown assailants at Banvim

Tensions have escalted in Banvim, a community within the Kakpagyili electoral area of the Northern Region, following the suspected murder of two children.

The children, Arafat and Ayaa, went missing on Saturday, June 22, 2024, after telling their parents they were visiting a neighbor but never returned.

Community members searched the neighbor’s house but found no trace of the children, leading to increased agitation among the residents.

The bodies have been moved to the Tamale Teaching Hospital morgue.

Move to regulate cement prices perfect – PNP to K.T. Hammond

The People’s National Party (PNP) has praised the Minister for Trade and Industry, K.T. Hammond, for proposing a bill in Parliament aimed at regulating cement prices.

In a statement issued by National Chairman and Leader the PNP, Janet Asana Nablah, expressed confidence that this move would enhance affordability of cement for ordinary Ghanaians.

The party asserted that opposition to the bill stems from those seeking to undermine its positive impact on Ghanaian society.

“Only those seeking to undermine this positive effort would oppose this commendable piece of legislation.”

“It is evident that some Members of Parliament prioritize the interests of the businessmen and women who funded their campaigns over those of their constituents.

It pointed out that some Members of Parliament prioritize the interests of their campaign financiers over those of their constituents, often opposing policies beneficial to Ghanaian families due to their obligations to sponsors.

Additionally, the statement urged the Ministries of Trade, Works and Housing, and Agriculture to expand this initiative by introducing further legislative measures to regulate food and rent prices, which are increasingly burdening many Ghanaian households.

“We call on all Ghanaian families to vote against any political party in the 2024 elections that puts the interests of businesses ahead of the wellbeing of ordinary citizens like yourselves.”

“Be vigilant and oppose any parties that support business practices that are detrimental to the everyday Ghanaian household. Your families deserve leaders who will prioritize your welfare over corporate profits,” the statement added.

70% of Nat’l Security budget goes into settling chieftaincy disputes – Minister

The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, disclosed that more than 70% of the National Security budget is allocated to resolving chieftaincy disputes, emphasizing the substantial drain on national resources caused by these conflicts.

Addressing the Royals Conference organized by the Church of Pentecost at the Pentecost Convention Center in Gomoa Fetteh, Boateng underscored the significant financial impact of these disputes, stating, “Chieftaincy cases are matters of concern to all of us and our body politic because it is on record that over 70% of the National Security budget goes into settling chieftaincy disputes across the country. These monies could have been better used if there were no disputes”.

Regarding policy initiatives, Boateng highlighted the introduction of the proposed National Policy on Religion, aimed at safeguarding individual freedoms and promoting religious harmony.

This policy development involved collaboration with the National Development Planning Commission, the Department for the Study of Religion at Legon, the UNFPA, and church leaders.

He outlined key issues identified during regional consultations for the policy, including religious intolerance, financial exploitation, political interference in religious affairs, noise pollution, and other challenges within the religious landscape.

“On the religious front, my ministry, with the support of various stakeholders, has undertaken regional engagements on the proposed national policy on religion. This exercise solicited input from identified stakeholders concerning issues affecting the religious space in our country,” Boateng noted.

“These are all the issues that came up in our consultation. We also unearthed non-acceptance of inter-religious marriages, child marriage, and forced marriages. Religious fanaticism, noise pollution, money laundering, exploitation of the vulnerable in the religious landscape, limited documentation of the code of conduct of some religious bodies, and false indoctrination, inter- and intra-faith disputes, leadership succession disputes, little or no organizational structure or hierarchy, and incitement to violence sometimes in extreme cases,” he added.

Boateng also emphasized the Ministry’s efforts to strengthen chieftaincy laws to empower traditional leaders in resolving disputes more effectively. He proposed amendments to clarify traditional leaders’ authority, currently a subject of contention in the Supreme Court.

Furthermore, the Minister advocated for the establishment of a Chieftaincy Development Fund and the provision of living allowances for traditional leaders, suggesting these measures as necessary steps to support and sustain the role of traditional leadership in Ghanaian society.

Panama Papers scandal: Court acquits all 28 individuals on money laundering charges

A Panamanian court has acquitted all 28 individuals charged with money laundering in relation to the Panama Papers scandal, concluding a trial that began in April.

The leaked financial documents from 2016 exposed how some of the world’s wealthiest and most influential individuals use tax havens to conceal their wealth.

Among those acquitted were Jurgen Mossack and the late Ramon Fonseca, founders of Mossack Fonseca, the now-defunct law firm at the center of the scandal.

Judge Baloisa Marquinez stated that the evidence presented was “not sufficient” to establish the criminal responsibility of the defendants.

During the trial, the prosecution sought a maximum sentence of 12 years for money laundering for both Mr. Mossack and Mr. Fonseca, who passed away in May.

Mr. Mossack and Mr. Fonseca maintained that neither they nor their firm had engaged in illegal activities.

The trial in Panama City lasted 85 hours, included testimony from 27 witnesses, and reviewed over 50 pieces of documentary evidence, as reported by local news outlets.

After extended deliberation, the judge ruled that the evidence from Mossack Fonseca’s servers had not been collected in accordance with due process, leading to the dismissal of all charges against the defendants.

The Panama Papers, the largest data leak in history, involved the release of 11 million documents to the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung, which were then shared with an international team of journalists.

In 2017, Mossack Fonseca claimed the firm had been hacked and that the leaked information was being misrepresented.

High-profile figures such as former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Argentinian football star Lionel Messi were scrutinized following the leak.

Overall, the documents linked 12 current or former heads of state and government, including dictators accused of embezzling funds from their own countries.

You don’t have the right to install a paramount chief at Fiapre – Sunyani West to Asantehene

The Odomase No.1 Traditional Council in the Sunyani West Municipality of the Bono Region is reportedly incensed by Fiaprehene Obrempong Professor Kyem Amponsah II’s decision to join the Asanteman Traditional Council.

According to Sunyani West chiefs, Fiaprehene Kyem Amponsah II cannot join the Asanteman Council as he is settling on their land.

During a press conference on Friday, June 29, 2024, Nana Godlonve Kwaku Boateng, the Kontirehene of Obumasi 1, stated that Obumasi was never conquered by the Ashanti Kingdom, thus Asantehene cannot install a paramount chief on their land.

He issued a stern warning to Fiaprehene Kyem Amponsah II, advising him against joining the Asanteman Council and asserting that the chief could leave their land if he chose to do so.

“He can leave for any town he wishes. He can serve anybody he wants. But he cannot take our property because he came to meet our land, which belongs to our ancestors. He should leave our land because it is for the children of Fiapre.

“I spoke to our family head and he agreed with me that the Asantehene cannot leave Asante and install a paramount chief in Fiapre because when he (the Fiaprehene) needed land to settle on, it was his (the family head’s) father who gave him the land. And so no one can live on his father’s land and serve another person,” he said in Twi.

He added, “You (Fiaprehene) are saying you are your own man and you can do what you want. But our land does not belong to the Asantehene. Obumasi is not one of the lands conquered by the Asante.”

Furthermore, Nana Yaa Adansi Puduo II, the Ohemaa of Odumasi No. 1, criticized Fiaprehene Kyem Amponsah II for what she deemed an act of ingratitude.

She emphasized that the chief’s decision to join the Asanteman Council disregarded the generosity of Odumasi’s chief and people, who had provided his ancestors with land when they had nowhere else to go.

  • Ghana’s national airline efforts in limbo

Ghana’s national airline efforts in limbo

Ghana’s efforts to establish a national airline have encountered significant challenges, delaying the commencement of operations by the year’s end.

Since 2017, initiatives to launch the national carrier, Ghana Airlines, have faced setbacks despite registering a joint venture, securing office premises, appointing a board of directors, and designating an accountable manager.

Current efforts include ongoing recruitment and training of essential staff, development of corporate branding, and formulation of operational manuals.

A selected partner, Ashanti Airlines Limited (AAL), chosen over competitors with extensive aviation experience, lacks aircraft, operational licenses, and adequate financial resources.

Despite incorporation in 2017, AAL remains without an Air Carrier Licence (ACL) and Air Operator’s Certificate (AOC).

Government plans reiterated in multiple budget statements since 2017 anticipated the airline’s launch as Ghana Airlines with strategic collaboration with AAL. However, delays persist, attributed partly to the global shortage of aircraft post-COVID-19.

According to Ministry of Transport Chief Director Mabel Sagoe, progress includes nearing completion of operational and maintenance document evaluations and anticipates AAL’s readiness by the third quarter of 2024, pending aircraft acquisition.

“The government set out to partner the private sector for the establishment of a national carrier for the country. In this regard, the government has a partnership agreement with a strategic partner, Ashanti Airlines, as was stated in the 2023 Budget and Economic Statement,” she said.

Internal skepticism within the National Airline Committee questions AAL’s capability to revive Ghana’s national airline aspirations, prompting outreach to alternative bidders for improved proposals.

Professor Peter Quartey of the University of Ghana underscores the national carrier’s importance in enhancing transportation infrastructure, tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.

While the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) remains reserved on developments, AAL’s certification process progresses through phases amid operational and compliance evaluations, crucial for securing an AOC.

Ghana has been without a viable national carrier since Ghana Airways ceased operations in 2004, followed by Ghana International Airlines in 2010, leaving a void in the country’s aviation sector.

According to the IMF’s statement on Friday, Ghana’s reform efforts are yielding positive results, with stronger-than-expected growth resilience, rapid inflation decline from 2022 highs, and substantial improvements in fiscal and external positions.

In a statement on X, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam affirmed Ghana’s steadfast commitment to implementing robust reform measures aimed at ensuring macroeconomic stability.

Dr. Adam expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for his strong leadership and acknowledged the IMF’s unwavering support for Ghana’s economic goals.

Chaos in Assin Central over NDC parliamentary candidate’s suspension

Members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Assin Central took to the streets on Friday, June 28, 2024 in protest against the suspension of their parliamentary candidate, Nurein Shiabu Migyimah.

The Central Regional Secretariat of the NDC announced the withdrawal of Nurein Shiabu Migyimah as the party’s Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate for the 2024 general elections due to moral reasons.

Following complaints against Nurein Shiabu Migyimah, the NDC’s Central Regional Functional Executive Committee conducted thorough investigations and discussions, leading to the immediate withdrawal of his candidature.

The Regional Functional Executive Committee has notified the Assin Central Chairman of the NDC about Nurein Shiabu Migyimah’s six-month suspension pending review and adjudication by the Regional Disciplinary Committee.

While the party did not specify the offense, sources suggest Mr. Migyimah allegedly impregnated the constituency secretary’s wife.

In response to the announcement, constituency members protested, alleging the directive aimed to prevent Mr. Migyimah from contesting.

Residents claimed to have conducted their own investigations, asserting the allegations were baseless. One resident recalled similar accusations against the candidate in 2019, questioning why he was allowed to pick up nomination forms if there were misconduct concerns.

Another resident criticized the lack of consultation with the constituency by the NDC’s Central Regional Functional Executive Committee before issuing the directive.

They have called on NDC flagbearer John Mahama to intervene, fearing the issue could disrupt party unity.

Meanwhile, Mr. Migyimah has denied the allegations of misconduct and anti-party behavior, expressing confidence that he will be vindicated through the party’s due process.

The NDC’s Central Regional Communications Director, Gabriella Tetteh, confirmed the suspension citing intimate videos involving Mr. Migyimah and the constituency secretary’s wife.

She explained that their relationship, which began in 2013, resurfaced in 2019 when Mr. Migyimah returned to contest the elections after a period abroad.

Madam Tetteh emphasized the party’s concern over the negative publicity generated by the videos, prompting their decision to take action.

Plot to remove IGP: COP Mensah, 2 others accused of breaching professional conduct

The ad hoc Parliamentary committee investigating the alleged conspiracy to oust Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has recommended disciplinary actions against the three implicated officers.

Chaired by Samuel Atta Akyea, MP for Abuakwa South, the committee identified COP Alex George Mensah (Rtd), Supt. George Lysander Asare, and Supt. Emmanuel Eric Gyedi for professional misconduct.

According to the committee’s findings, their actions constitute a serious breach of Police regulations, warranting sanctions under the disciplinary procedures.

An estimated 100,000 protesters are expected to participate in demonstrations against the anti-immigration AfD, which has been gaining traction, particularly in former communist East Germany.

While organizers promised peaceful protests, police expressed concerns about potential violence from around 1,000 leftist extremists planning to demonstrate.

Approximately 600 AfD delegates are meeting in an indoor arena, with party co-leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla seeking re-election ahead of next year’s German parliamentary elections.

Several hundred protesters blocked a motorway exit ramp and occupied streets near the congress venue in an attempt to hinder delegates.

Addressing the meeting, Weidel criticized the protests as undemocratic and asserted the party’s resolve to continue.

Several thousand police officers were deployed to ensure security, with a major demonstration scheduled to start at 10 am at the main train station.

On Friday evening, 5,000 protesters gathered for a music rally themed “Bass against hate.”

Some AfD politicians reported being escorted by police from their hotels to the venue, while others managed to reach the arena without incident.

The AfD is under surveillance by Germany’s domestic intelligence agency as a suspected right-wing extremist group, due to concerns over its racist, antisemitic, and anti-democratic tendencies.

Despite controversies, the party secured second place nationwide in the recent European Parliament elections and first place in the five former communist eastern states.

It is projected to emerge as the strongest party in September elections in Saxony, Thuringia, and Brandenburg, raising fears of potential coalition challenges for other political parties.

We will destroy you if you attack Lebanon – Iran threatens Israel

Iran’s United Nations mission has issued a stark warning to Israel, cautioning against any large-scale military actions in Lebanon, which it claims could escalate into a devastating conflict.

In a statement posted on X late Friday, the mission stated, “All options, including full engagement of all Resistance Fronts, are being considered,” referring to Iran-aligned groups across the region.

The statement dismissed Israel’s threats of targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon as “psychological warfare” and “propaganda.”

Tensions along the Israeli-Lebanese border have escalated with daily exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah since the start of the current conflict in Gaza on October 7.

Concerns of a broader conflict heightened after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated preparations for a “highly sensitive operation” on the Lebanese border.

Israeli military spokespersons confirmed a series of airstrikes targeting Hezbollah sites in southern Lebanon, including military installations in the Zabqin area and operational infrastructure in Khiam and Odaisseh.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized Israel’s readiness for any potential conflict with Hezbollah while expressing a preference to avoid war.

  • I pocketed €700k from €2.37m ambulance deal – Jakpa admits again

I pocketed €700k from €2.37m ambulance deal – Jakpa admits again

Richard Jakpa, the businessman accused of causing financial loss of €2.37 million to the state in an ambulance deal with the Minority leader, Ato Forson has admitted that his company received 28.7% of the amount paid by the government to Big Sea under the Ambulance contract.

    This amounts to approximately €700,000.

Mr Jakpa made this admission during cross-examination by the Attorney General (AG), Godfred Yeboah Dame.

When questioned about the Agency Agreement signed with Big Sea Limited, which entitled him to 10% of all monies paid under the Ambulance Contract, Mr Jakpa responded,”That is so but it is not my total entitlement. I was entitled to more by other clauses under the Agreement”.

Mr. Dame further pressed, “Out of the about €2.3 million paid by the Government to Big Sea under the Ambulance Contract, you and Jakpa at Business earned 28.7% of it. In fact, about €700,000 was paid to you.”

Jakpa stated “Yes, that was the amount paid to Jakpa at Business as an Agent”.

Additionally, Mr Jakpa refuted allegations that he approached Big Sea for the purchase of ambulances after receiving parliamentary approval.

He clarified that Big Sea was already known to the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Finance prior to the approval.

He pointed out that the agency agreement between Big Sea and Jakpa@business Limited was established on May 24, 2011, whereas parliamentary approval for the ambulance procurement occurred on November 1, 2012, more than a year later.

The ongoing trial involves a former Deputy Minister of Finance and the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, alongside a former Chief Director of the Ministry of Health, Sylvester Anemana, and Richard Jakpa.

They have been accused of causing financial loss of €2.37 million to the state in a deal to purchase 200 ambulances for the country between 2014 and 2016.

Dr. Forson, who is also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Ajumako Enyan Esiam and the Ranking Member on the Finance Committee of Parliament, faces charges alongside his co-accused.

On November 19, 2012, Mr Anemana is said to have written to the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) seeking approval to engage Big Sea through single sourcing for the supply of 200 ambulances.

By an agreement dated December 19, 2012, the Ministry of Health formally contracted Big Sea General Trading, based in Dubai, for the supply of 200 Mercedes Benz ambulances at a contract sum of €15.8 million, with a unit price of €79,000.

The delivery terms stipulated that the first batch of 25 vehicles should be delivered within 120 days of the agreement, with the remaining 175 vehicles to be delivered in batches of 25 every 30 days.

I will ensure every Ghanaian has access to affordable housing – Mahama

Former President and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has committed to tackling Ghana’s housing deficit by focusing on the construction of affordable housing nationwide.

In a meeting with the leadership of the National Tenant Union at his Accra office on Friday, June 28, 2024, Mahama emphasized the critical role of housing in the country’s economic development.

“Housing is a crucial need, and my government will work tirelessly to develop SOCIAL HOUSING that is truly affordable and accessible for ordinary Ghanaians. That will be one of my legacies as President,” he said.

He pledged to prioritize the development of social housing that would be affordable and accessible to ordinary Ghanaians.

“I deeply empathise with the 19 million people in Ghana who are renting and committed to building a brighter future for all Ghanaians, with housing being a pivotal aspect of that,” he added.

Checkout NPP running mates since 1996

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has a rich tradition of selecting running mates who have left a significant impact on Ghana’s political landscape.

Since 1994, during the Fourth Republic, the party has seen two of its running mates ascend to the vice presidency.

As the 2024 elections approach, the NPP’s legacy continues with Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh unofficially assuming the role.

Here’s a look at all the NPP running mates since 1996:

1996: John Agyekum Kufuor and Kow Nkensen Arkaah

John Agyekum Kufuor chose Kow Nkensen Arkaah as his running mate in 1996. Although they did not win, Kufuor’s leadership set a strong foundation for future campaigns.

2000 and 2004: John Agyekum Kufuor and Aliu Mahama

In the 2000 and 2004 elections, John Agyekum Kufuor selected Alhaji Aliu Mahama as his running mate. Their partnership was successful, with Kufuor serving two terms as President and Mahama as Vice President, marking the NPP’s first tenure in the Fourth Republic.

2008: Nana Akufo-Addo and Mahamudu Bawumia

In 2008, Nana Akufo-Addo ran with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate. Despite their efforts, they did not win the election.

    2012, 2016, and 2020: Nana Akufo-Addo and Mahamudu Bawumia

Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia continued their partnership in the 2012, 2016, and 2020 elections. Their persistence paid off in 2016 when they won, with Akufo-Addo becoming President and Bawumia serving as Vice President. They were re-elected in 2020.

2024: Mahamudu Bawumia and Matthew Opoku Prempeh

Looking ahead to the 2024 elections, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has transitioned from Vice President to the NPP’s flagbearer. In a recent announcement, he introduced Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the current Energy Minister, as his running mate.

Jane got only 35% approval from NDC’s Council, yet no member criticized her – Majority Leader

Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin has called for calm within the Majority caucus following the announcement that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has chosen Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate.

He encouraged his colleagues to take a cue from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), which accepted the presidential candidate’s choice of running mate despite significant internal opposition.

He revealed that over 60 percent of the National Council of the NDC’s votes were against Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as the running mate. Nevertheless, once the decision was approved and announced, no one publicly criticized it.

His remarks came in response to comments made by the MP for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, who expressed that Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, was not his preferred candidate.

Mr Appiah-Kubi, who is also a member of the NPP’s National Council, doubted NAPO’s ability to secure votes or be compliant with the presidency should the party win the elections.

The Majority Leader, however, urged MPs to respect the party’s decision and support the chosen individual, regardless of personal opposition. He acknowledged that the official communication of the chosen running mate had not yet been made but emphasized the importance of rallying behind the party’s selection to partner with Dr. Bawumia in the general elections.

“We haven’t received any official word from the party yet. Consultations are indeed ongoing, and we’ve heard various names.

“All the individuals mentioned are respected party members who have contributed significantly to our party. It would be inappropriate for anyone to single out an individual for criticism,” he stated.

“In politics, if destiny chooses you, your age, religion, or humility doesn’t matter. If God has chosen you, so be it.

“We need to maintain party unity, so let’s all wait and ensure that unity prevails. We know that when Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was selected, she received only 35% approval from the party’s national council, yet no one from the NDC publicly objected,” he added.

“We’re all in this together; no one is perfect. The flagbearer has the party’s confidence, and I trust he will utilize the party’s structures in making his decisions,” he affirmed.

C/R: NDC leaders summoned by national executives over Assin Central PC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has summoned the Central Regional Chairman and Secretary regarding the suspension of Assin Central Parliamentary Candidate, Nurein Shiabu Migyimah.

The regional executives, in a letter addressed to Mr. Migyimah, stated that the Functional Executive Committee’s decision to suspend the parliamentary candidate was based on allegations of immoral acts and anti-party conduct.

However, the national executives questioned the regional executives’ authority to make such a decision without their consent.

“The above-mentioned action, if true, was taken without the approval of the National Executive Committee and is considered inappropriate and in contravention of due process and the provisions of Articles 40, 41, 46, and 48 of the NDC constitution.”

“In light of that, you are hereby requested to appear before the National Leadership of the party on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, at 2 pm, together with your Regional Secretary, to explain how this letter was sent out without the approval of the party’s national leadership,” the General Secretary of the party, Fifi Kwetey, stated.

‘Wee toffee’ becoming a common snack for SHS students in Upper East Region

The Executive Director of Life Out of Alcohol and Drugs Ghana (LOAD-Ghana) in the Upper East Region, Roger Atambire Abaa, has expressed deep concern over the increasing use of “wee toffee” among Senior High School (SHS) students.

This substance, a local combination of marijuana, condensed milk, and sugar, has reportedly become a popular snack among students, raising serious concerns about its impact on their health and academic performance.

Mr. Atambire described the situation as both alarming and widespread.

“If you visit the various SHSs, it is bad. The wee toffee is common among the students. Where they get them, one can’t tell, but these learners are consuming these substances like there is no tomorrow, and I think authorities ought to strengthen efforts that can curtail this growing behavior amongst the learners,” he stated.

Speaking on A1 Radio during a World Drug Day awareness segment, Mr. Atambire urgently called on school authorities and relevant stakeholders to take concrete steps to address this issue.

He emphasized the need for increased vigilance and proactive measures to either eliminate or significantly reduce the production and consumption of these substances in and around school premises.

Mr. Atambire’s comments highlight a critical issue facing many educational institutions in the region.

The rising trend of “wee toffee” consumption among SHS students, he said, is a call to action for parents, educators, and policymakers to prioritize the health and safety of learners.

  • You speak ill of Bawumia because you hate him – Ekow Acquah to Franklin Cudjoe

You speak ill of Bawumia because you hate him – Ekow Acquah to Franklin Cudjoe

President of the policy think tank IMANI, Franklin Cudjoe, has faced significant criticism for a controversial claim made on his Facebook page concerning the 33 policies spearheaded by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In a recent post, Mr Cudjoe asserted that these policies, including initiatives like drone-delivered medical supplies to remote areas, mobile money interoperability, and digitalization of public services, have had no discernible impact on the economy.

In response, Political Communications Consultant Dr. Ekow Acquah issued an open letter characterizing Cudjoe’s statement as politically motivated. Acquah questioned the rationale behind dismissing initiatives that are widely regarded as crucial for modernizing the economy and improving public services, suggesting that such criticism may undermine the achievements of Dr. Bawumia’s leadership in these areas.

“Your latest piece of baseless and shocking analysis on your Facebook page was your shocking claim that Bawumia’s 33 policies he has championed as Vice President, have no impact on the economy and the country,” Dr. Acquah wrote to Franklin Cudjoe.

“Are you serious? Are you the same Franklin Cudjoe of IMANI?” he queried, adding, “indeed when I first saw this bizarre claim on your page, I instantly wrote it off as coming from a parody account, but upon further checks, I found out it was really coming from you, head of a policy think tank with over 20 years’ experience!”

He continued, “Mr. Franklin, are you really serious that transformative policies, which Dr. Bawumia spearheaded, such as One Constituency, One Ambulance, Zipline Medical Drone, Mobile Money Interoperability, national biometric identity through Ghanacard, national property address system, digitalization of public services, Agenda 111, Zongo Development Fund, and many others, have not been impactful and have no impact on the economy? Even if you are being politically mischievous, you should be concerned about your integrity.”

Dr. Acquah further asked, “How could any serious-minded policy analyst claim that the innovative and internationally acclaimed delivery of essential medical supplies through drones to over 2000 clinics and hospitals in remote communities in the country on a daily basis has no impact?”

“Because of your hatred for Bawumia, you choose to play down the impact of an intervention which even Kamala Harris, the US Vice President, commended Ghana for. Get serious Mr. Franklin,” he blasted the IMANI boss.

    Below is the full letter:

WHEN A THINK TANK BECOMES AN EMPTY TANK – AN OPEN LETTER TO IMANI’S FRANKLIN CUDJOE OVER HIS CLAIM ON BAWUMIA’S 33 POLICIES

    Dear Franklin,

I hope this letter finds you well and succeeds in reawakening you, bringing you back on track toward the noble think tank duties you were once noted for.

Without a doubt, you have built a fine reputation for yourself, having strongly built IMANI, alongside your partners, from scratch to one recognized and respected by international organizations.

As a think tank, IMANI, which you have played a starring role in shaping, has played significant roles in conducting research, sharing ideas, critiquing policies, and providing intellectual platforms for policy dialogues, all geared towards the progress of our country.

However, in recent times, as head of one of the leading policy think tanks in the country, you have reduced this starring and noble role of think tanks, specifically IMANI, to a comedy show, with your social media handles as platforms.

For reasons best known to you, you have reduced your once admirable analytical prowess to a lazy, armchair Facebook analyst, always making deductions and analogies that are, at best, baseless and ridiculous.

Anyone who follows you, including your ardent admirers like me, would have realized how you struggle to make meaningful, intellectual analysis based on data and facts, as you used to do. You now reduce serious issues of national concern to satire, and you hide behind satirical analogies to attack those you despise, especially Dr. Bawumia.

Your latest piece of baseless and shocking analysis on your Facebook page was your shocking claim that Bawumia’s 33 policies he has championed as Vice President have no impact on the economy and the country.

Are you serious? Are you the same Franklin Cudjoe of IMANI? Indeed, when I first saw this bizarre claim on your page, I instantly wrote it off as coming from a parody account, but upon further checks, I found out it was really coming from you, head of a policy think tank with over 20 years of experience!

Mr. Franklin, are you really serious that the transformative policies, which Dr. Even if you are being politically mischievous, you should be concerned about your integrity.

Get serious, Mr. Franklin, because the more you allow your hatred for Dr. Bawumia to consume you, or the more you desperately try to prove to the NDC that you are neutral, you end up embarrassing yourself, your hard-earned reputation, your colleagues at IMANI, and of course, IMANI itself.

How could any serious-minded policy analyst claim that the innovative and internationally acclaimed delivery of essential medical supplies through drones to over 2,000 clinics and hospitals in remote communities in the country, on a daily basis, has no impact? Because of your hatred for Bawumia, you choose to play down the impact of an intervention that even Kamala Harris, the US Vice President, commended Ghana for. Get serious, Mr. Franklin.

Mr. Franklin, how do you play down the impact of mobile money interoperability on the Ghanaian economy? As a leader of a think tank, are you not aware that thanks to the successful implementation of mobile money interoperability, Ghana is now the number one country in Africa as far as financial inclusion is concerned? As a leader of a policy think tank, do you not know that financial inclusion is a key and basic element towards transforming an economy? Get serious, Mr. Franklin!

As a leader of a policy think tank, how do you explain to the world that, in a contemporary economy, a digital national identity system and a digital national address system have no bearing and impact, as pillars for economic transformation? Are you really serious, Mr. Franklin?

Dr. Bawumia, even before he became Vice President, wrote in his 2010 book about the need for developing countries like Ghana to establish strong economic pillars such as national identity systems and national address systems and increase financial inclusion as basic pillars for economic transformation. This is how Europe, where you get your funding from, developed economically, and that’s what Dr. Bawumia has done through the opportunity he’s had as Vice President.

He has used the opportunity he’s had as Vice President to implement what he recommended to African countries in his book, and those are pillars and principles for economic transformation. It is sad you don’t know this, or you choose not to know!

As for your assertion that the Agenda 111 Hospital Bawumia championed is not beneficial because none has been completed, the least said about it, the better. Such weird thoughts rather expose your recent lazy approach to intellectual analysis. Nearly 100 hospitals being built across the country are not beneficial because none has been completed? How funny! Your thoughts are like saying a student is wasting their time in school because they have not yet completed school.

Mr. Franklin, in your deep hatred for Bawumia and your desperate quest to prove to the NDC you are neutral, you can continue to be delusional about your status and your influence. What you do not know is that you’re rather embarrassing IMANI, the organization you have built over the years.

And what you do not realize is that you are only fooling a few of your audience on social media, who will jump at every nonsense you write and give you a few “likes” and praises. These think-alikes do not represent discerning members of society who appreciate the impacts of the 33 policies Dr. Bawumia has proposed and spearheaded as Vice President.

The pregnant women in remote parts of Ghana, who have been rescued by drones delivering timely essential medical supplies, appreciate what Dr. Bawumia has done!

The market women, who used to be attacked on the highways because they carried cash to the markets, but now have the luxury of saving their money on mobile money wallets, which work like bank accounts, appreciate what Dr. Bawumia has done.

Discerning Ghanaians, who have seen the real impact of digitalization on effectively battling corruption and saving the nation and the economy millions of dollars through identity fraud, appreciate what Dr. Bawumia has done.

Ghanaians, who were excluded and never had any means of identity, both for themselves and their property, appreciate Dr. Bawumia’s efforts in ensuring a robust national identity and property address system.

Mr. Franklin, you can hate Dr. Bawumia all you like! No one can stop that. But your ignorance and hatred can be exposed. Now it is so obvious how you struggle to appease each side of the political divide.

For a man I, and I believe, many others admired for what you did in the past, it is unfortunate you have now reduced the once-revered IMANI from a think tank to an empty tank.

How I wish I could dissociate you from IMANI for the organization to keep its credibility from your inconsistent self. But like conjoined twins, you’re inseparable!

It’s not too late. You can go back to your former self; a man who worked for the progress of Ghana, not for any other consideration.

    A word to the wise…

    Best regards,

Dr. Ekow Acquah, Political Communications Consultant.

Health sector investment key to economic growth, youth employment – Okoe Boye

Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, has advocated for increased investment in the health sector to generate employment opportunities for the youth.

During his recent tour of the Ashanti region, the minister emphasized the pivotal role of health facilities in mitigating unemployment across the country.

Dr. Okoe Boye made these comments while inspecting the Fomena Government Hospital in the Adansi North District and the Sekyere Kumawu District Hospital, which commenced operations in November 2023 and April 2024 respectively.

Both hospitals are part of a group of six health facilities and accompanying staff accommodations, originally contracted by NMS Infrastructure in 2012 at a value of $175 million.

“I hear people say let’s create jobs and one of the best ways to create jobs is to put up a health facility. You will have to recruit new professionals but you also need those who don’t have special skills but can be trained to be of use in the hospital and I believe that one of the ways to create opportunities for the youth is to invest in the health sector, especially in health facilities.”

Chamber for Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) has projected an increase in fuel prices for the first pricing window of July 2024, citing factors such as a recent drop in the Dollar to Cedi exchange rate from an average of $1¢14.4788 to $1¢15.2779 (-1.89%).

The organization forecasts that petrol’s retail price will rise by approximately 2.17%, from the current mean pump price of GH¢14.17 per litre to GH¢15.20 per litre.

Similarly, diesel is expected to climb to GH¢15.21 per litre, while LPG prices are anticipated to range between GH¢13.24 and GH¢14.64 per kg.

COPEC highlighted the importance of government actions to reduce taxes on LPG or introduce subsidies to enhance its accessibility and promote nationwide usage, thereby aiding environmental preservation by reducing reliance on firewood.

Additionally, COPEC urged the government to prioritize efforts to revive the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to reduce or eliminate the need for importing finished petroleum products, which often results in fuel contamination issues.

I’m yet to receive a letter confirming my suspension – NDC Assin Central PC

The suspended Assin Central Parliamentary candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Nurein Shaibu Mygyimah, has stated that he has not received any formal notification of his suspension.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme on Friday, Mr. Mygyimah indicated that he became aware of his suspension through a letter circulating on social media and a WhatsApp message from the Regional Secretary.

He clarified that he maintains a cordial relationship with party executives and remains unaware of the specific allegations against him.

Despite this, Mr. Mygyimah expressed willingness to adhere to due party processes and expressed confidence in being exonerated.

The NDC’s Central Regional Secretariat withdrew Mr. Mygyimah as its parliamentary candidate less than six months before the December 7 election, citing allegations of immoral acts and anti-party activities in their statement.

However, Mr. Mygyimah denied these accusations, with his lawyer suggesting that the suspension was driven by personal grievances involving the Regional Chairman, Professor Kofi Asiedu, and the Regional Secretary.

In response, the aggrieved party issued a three-day ultimatum demanding the reversal of the decision to allow Mr. Mygyimah to resume his campaign for the NDC’s seat.

They threatened legal action if the ultimatum passed without resolution.

Furthermore, the NDC National Secretariat, surprised by the Regional Secretariat’s actions, summoned Prof. Asiedu and the Secretary to appear before the Functional Executive Council (FEC) on Tuesday, July 2.

The party leadership seeks clarification on the issuance of the suspension letter without approval from the national leadership.

I will ensure justice for Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election victims – Mahama

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring justice for the victims of the violence that occurred during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

This renewal of commitment follows ongoing concerns regarding the government’s lack of action in implementing recommendations from the Commission of Inquiry’s white paper since 2019. The violence erupted after the passing of MP Emmanuel Kwabena Kyeremateng Agyarko on November 21, 2018, during the by-election.

While visiting one of the affected individuals in Fadama, Accra, John Mahama pledged that a future NDC administration would take steps to alleviate the plight of the victims and criticized the current government for its failure to hold the perpetrators accountable.

“We know that after Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, a commission of inquiry was set up and the commission made some investigations and recommendations. It identified those who were responsible for what happened at Ayawaso West Wuogon and asked that they be sanctioned.

“Unfortunately, this government has refused to take any action against those who were responsible for the harm that has been caused to our brother.

“And I have assured him that when we come to power, justice will be done and whoever was involved in that unfortunate incident will be brought to book and made to face justice for what they have done to him.

“Aside from that, it also recommended that they be paid compensation for the injuries that have been caused them. As far as I know that compensation has not been paid yet.

“So, I wish to assure him that NDC is going to win the elections and when we win, the appropriate compensation that is due him will be paid, so that he can invest the money into something and make a living. We will make sure he’s paid that compensation.”

This is unacceptable! – Majority leader to Appiah Kubi over recent comments against NAPO

Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akim North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has stirred controversy among some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region following his criticism of the reported selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s running mate in the upcoming December 7 elections.

Speaking on Accra-based Joy FM on Thursday, June 27, 2024, Mr. Appiah-Kubi expressed strong reservations about Dr. Opoku Prempeh, commonly known as NAPO, potentially being chosen as the running mate.

“I wouldn’t speak for the majority because we have not been consulted as a caucus to state our position. But for me, Appiah-Kubi, you can solicit my view on that. If it were up to me to choose, I wouldn’t choose him (Napo). He is not my preference,” the Asante Akim North MP said.

Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin voiced disappointment over Mr. Appiah-Kubi’s remarks, addressing reporters at Parliament House on the same day.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized the importance of respecting party protocols in selecting running mates and cautioned against publicly disparaging colleagues.

“We should all respect party rules. You cannot go out of your way to describe your colleague in a manner that is unacceptable,” he charged.

“We are in this together. There is no perfect person in this world. Let us be measured in the language we use. The flagbearer has the confidence of the party, and I believe he will use the structures of the party in making his decisions,” he stated.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin further called on the Asante Akim North MP to exercise caution in his language, emphasizing unity within the party and confidence in the leadership’s decision-making process. “The flagbearer has the party’s confidence, and decisions will be made through party structures,” he affirmed.

Meanwhile, a group identifying as Concerned NPP Members in the Ashanti Region expressed dismay over Mr. Appiah-Kubi’s comments, calling for disciplinary action. They criticized his remarks as disrespectful not only to Dr. Opoku Prempeh but also to the President, Vice President, and the NPP as a whole.

The group endorsed Dr. Opoku Prempeh as an outstanding choice, citing his potential contributions to securing electoral victories for the party. Drawing parallels to past criticisms of Vice President Bawumia’s selection as running mate, they highlighted his subsequent pivotal role in electoral successes and effective vice presidency.

In conclusion, the Concerned NPP Members urged party leadership to address Mr. Appiah-Kubi’s remarks swiftly to uphold party unity and focus on achieving an “8-year mandate” in the upcoming elections.

Kwaku Kwarteng now Chairperson of Economy Committee

The Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has announced in Parliament that the former Chairman of the Finance Committee, Kwaku Kwarteng, has been reassigned to the position of Chairperson of the Economy Committee.

This strategic move, according to Afenyo-Markin, is intended to prepare the majority for the 2024 elections and to challenge the minority’s ranking member of the Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo.

Speaking in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin stated, “We, the majority, have a new spokesperson on the economy; you (the minority) have none. We have a new spokesperson, and very soon, we are going to unveil him: Kwaku Kwarteng.

“We have a Finance Committee and the Economy Committee. I am letting them know some of the proactive steps we are taking on this side of the house to throw a serious challenge. It is not just about governance. The Economy Committee is going to have a new leader, and he is going to be the most important person on the committee to challenge you, Isaac Adongo. That is why we are now going to make Kwaku Kwarteng the chair of the Economy Committee to face you.”

  • Rawlings never shaved anyone’s hair with a broken bottle – Zanetor

Rawlings never shaved anyone’s hair with a broken bottle – Zanetor

Member of Parliament (MP) for Korle Klottey, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has recently addressed a longstanding allegation involving her late father, former President Jerry John Rawlings.

The accusation claims that soldiers, acting on Rawlings’ orders, shaved her supposed boyfriend’s head with a broken bottle, leaving him bald.

The alleged boyfriend, Selassie O’Sullivan-Djentuh, recounted this incident in his asylum application to the British Home Office.

He claimed that in 2000, after ending his relationship with a young Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, soldiers brutally attacked him.

“I was driven to the Castle, the seat of government. I was dragged out of the van and beaten again. I was shaved with an old rusty blade and later with a broken bottle. I was told that the President had ordered my hair to be brought to him. They said the President had also ordered them to kill me and dump my body in the sea. I know that my hair was collected. I do not know whether it was actually taken to the President.

“I was questioned about my relationship with Zanetor and how many times I slept with her. I was beaten up several times throughout my detention. I was questioned about my knowledge of the Rawlings’ estate (their properties and buildings), and I told them I knew nothing. The guards insisted Zanetor had told me certain secrets, and they wanted to know how much I knew. W.O. Budu alleged since my mother had gone on air about my abduction, they could not do what they had planned, but they could chase me to any country I run to and finish me off,” part of Selassie’s five-page statement at the British Home Office reads.

In her first public comment on the matter, during a June 27, 2024 interview with GHOne TV, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings categorically denied any involvement by her father.

She explained how the false allegations affected her deeply, especially since she was very young at the time and there was no opportunity to clarify the truth to the public.

She clarified that her relationship with Selassie had ended by the time of the incident, which she said was related to a land dispute, not her father.

“My dad had nothing to do with that. The story that I had heard regarding how that all happened was that there was some land issue, and there was some military person involved. At the time, we were not even friends. This was long after I’d gone my way, and he had gone his way. So, this was a bit strange, actually, but politics again, you know, I think it was just a perfect story for the time.

Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings shared how the allegations had a psychological impact on her and influenced her approach to politics.

“That bothered me a lot because, at the time, I felt quite unfairly treated because the fact is, the story wasn’t true, and no room was being made for the true version of the story to be told because nobody really wanted to hear it at the time. And, I mean, I was young at the time, you know, doing my little ‘chrife’ thing on the side. And this was a bit devastating, actually, for me.”

Shamefully justify why cement prices have increased by GHC87 under Akufo-Addo – Bridget Otoo fires at “NPP fool soldiers”

Ghanaian journalist, Bridget Otoo, has criticized the Akufo-Addo-led government over the significant rise in cement prices.

In a recent post on X, Mr Otoo highlighted the stark contrast in price increases between the administrations of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to Bridget Otoo, from 2009 to 2016, under the NDC government, cement prices rose by 7 cedis.

However, she stated that from 2017 to 2024, under the NPP administration, prices have surged by an alarming 87 cedis.

“I hope NPP fool soldiers will justify why the increment from 2009-2016 is worse than from 2017 to 2024… as they are doing shamelessly without success with the dollar to cedi rate,” Otoo stated.

Critics argue that the government’s policies have not adequately addressed these issues, resulting in higher costs for essential goods and services.

Meanwhile, the Akufo-Addo-led government has indicated that global economic conditions and supply chain disruptions have played significant roles in the price hikes.

The government has maintained that the government is working diligently to stabilize the economy and address these external pressures.

  • Why are you running away from the economy? – Isaac Adongo to Bawumia

Why are you running away from the economy? – Isaac Adongo to Bawumia

A senior member of Parliament’s Finance Committee, Isaac Adongo, has criticized Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for mishandling Ghana’s economy.

In a media address on June 26, 2024, Mr Adongo openly questioned Dr. Bawumia’s absence from crucial economic discussions.

He accused Dr. Bawumia of sidestepping significant economic challenges and labeled him a “Yahoo champion” for focusing on digitalization rather than economic strategies.

“Why has Dr. Bawumia run away from the economy? If you are a braggart and an empty economist, our economy will give you a better beating,” the lawmaker said.

“After Dr. Bawumia realized that the punches coming from the economy are not small ones, we have all seen that he is a Yahoo champion all over the place,” he added.

Mr Adongo underscored Dr. Bawumia’s extensive background, including over 15 years of studying economics, earning a Ph.D., and working with institutions like the African Development Bank and the Bank of Ghana.

He expressed disappointment in Dr. Bawumia’s performance in managing the economy, claiming that the NPP flagbearer has shifted his focus to areas beyond his expertise.

“You studied economics for over 15 years, became a Ph.D., worked with the African Development Bank, worked at the Bank of Ghana, and all of that. And when we gave you the economy, you couldn’t manage it,” Adongo stressed.

“Now, the things you’re championing, you didn’t even learn. You just went and opened the computer on the Internet and saw something they called digitalization. You say we should believe you that you can do that one,” the MP concluded.

Leave SSNIT hotels and get drinking water for your constituency – X user to Bryan Acheampong

An X user, Yayra Koku has lamented about the lack of developments in Abetifi, Kwahu Obon, in the Eastern Region.

His comments come after a viral video depicting the lack of potable water in the area.

The video showed an unhygienic stream filled with trash which was being fetched by residents.

The residents indicated that was the only source of water they drank, cooked and bathed with.

But taking to the X platform, he called on the Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency,

Bryan Acheampong,  to channel his energy towards the development of the area rather than the purchase of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) hotels.

“This is sad. Someone should tag Bryan Acheampong for me. He should stop purchasing SSNIT hotels and get his people drinking water,” he added.

The MP who doubles as the Minister of Agriculture has recently been in the news after North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, published documents regarding the planned sale of the majority shares of the SSNIT to an outfit owned by him.

“Prof. Kwaku Appiah-Adu is not only a Senior Advisor to Ghana’s Vice President, Alhaji Bawumia, he is the current board chair of La Palm Royal Hotel.

“It would be interesting to know what his advice to the Vice President is as regards the infamous sale of SSNIT’s hotels to Minister of Agric, Bryan Acheampong,” Ablakwa’s post dated June 5, 2024, read in part.

According to Ablakwa the sale is against the interest of the state.

In view of this, he led a protest titled ‘Hands off our Hotels’ on June 18, 2024.

The demonstration aimed to urge the government to halt the sale of 60 percent shares in four SSNIT-owned hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

Meanwhile, Ablakwa has announced a second phase of the protest in the Central Region, reassuring residents that their concerns about the sale of Elmina Beach Hotel and Ridge Royal Hotel have been acknowledged and will be addressed.

Don’t throw your hands up in despair; Ghana shall not die – Koku Anyidoho to Ghanaians

A former member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Koku Anyidoho, has urged Ghanaians not to give up in the fight in making Ghana a better and comfortable place for all.

Mr Anyidoho has been vocal about issues impacting Ghanaian society, advocating for unity and progress.

In a post on the X platform he  highlighted the importance of maintaining hope and resilience in the face of adversity.

“If we are actually moving into such realms of living illuminating possibilities, then there is no reason to throw our hands up in despair. Ghana shall not die,” he wrote.

The NDC’s former Deputy General’s encouragement comes after a viral video showed a Ghanaian man lauding the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government’s digitization efforts.

According to the man, his Ghana card served as passport while traveling back to Ghana from Cameroon.

“The Ghana card is actually a passport, the doubting Thomas must understand, I am currently at the Douala Airport travelling back to Ghana and I used my Ghana card. The card is actually a passport. Kudos to the NPP government and Alhaji Dr Mahamudu Bawumia. May God richly bless Ghana,” he added.

In 2021, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia announced that the Ghana card  will be acknowledged as an electronic passport across 197 countries by 2022.

Speaking during a public lecture on the digital economy at Ashesi University on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, the Vice President highlighted that this development aims to enhance the convenience of travel for Ghanaians living abroad.

“The Ghana card will be recognized as an e-passport and can be read and verified in all [International Civil Aviation Organization] ICAO compliant borders (in 197 countries and 44,000 airports in the world). When this happens, holders of the Ghana card will be allowed to board any flight to Ghana.”

“Furthermore, the good news for diasporan Ghanaians is that when the Ghana Immigration Service is linked to the NIA architecture, diasporan Ghanaians who hold the Ghana card should not have to obtain visas to travel to Ghana.”

Highlighting additional advantages of the Ghana card, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia noted that Ghanaian missions and foreign embassies will utilize the card to verify the identities of Ghanaians abroad.

Dr. Bawumia further revealed that the government has collaborated with the International Civil Aviation Organization to enable the global activation of the Ghana card’s e-passport functionality.

“We expect this to be operational by the end of the first quarter of next year. Ghana is one of the few countries in the world where the national ID card is also an e-passport,” he said.

NAPO will garner a lot of votes for NPP – Vincent Ekow Assafuah

The Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has suggested that the current Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, would be an excellent running mate for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

During an interview on Channel One TV, Assafuah pointed out Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s impressive track record and his strong connections, especially in the Ashanti Region, as key advantages that could greatly boost the NPP’s chances in the upcoming elections.

Mr Assafuah emphasized that Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s accomplishments and his rapport with significant figures, including those at Otumfuo’s palace, make him a powerful choice to support Dr. Bawumia’s candidacy.

Responding to criticisms of Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s tenure in the energy sector, Mr Assafuah dismissed these concerns, arguing that the minister has shown his worth to the party through his achievements and the broad support he enjoys in his political stronghold.

“With the kind of things that he has to his credit, there is no doubt that he would add a lot to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. People believe that he’s a royal, he comes from Otumfuo’s palace and because of his relationship with the giants in the Ashanti Region, how he carried himself, and how he’s been a helper to most people in the Ashanti region, clearly he brings a lot to the ticket.

“I think Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia did his own research, he has done a lot of engagements with party stalwarts and I do not think that it would be a mistake for him to add him to his ticket.

“I think if the NPP would want to garner about 80% of the votes, which is clearly becoming the ambition of the party, of course, he’s going to play a critical role to be able to make sure that we garner such votes,” he added.

Hawa Koomson will be prosecuted for all her offenses if we assume power – NDC

The National Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo, has issued a warning to the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson.

Addo stated that if the NDC comes into power after the 2024 elections, Koomson will be arrested and prosecuted for alleged criminal activities that occurred during her time in office.

In response to the recent arrest of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, a parliamentary candidate in the Awutu Senya East constituency, Addo criticized what he viewed as unjustifiable detention driven by political motives during an interview on Onua TV on June 26, 2024.

He condemned the police’s handling of Okunor’s case, claiming that there was interference from higher authorities.

“The detention of Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor was irresponsible and lacked legal basis.

Turning his criticism towards Minister Hawa Koomson, he brought up an incident from the 2020 elections where Koomson displayed a firearm at a polling station.

“Hawa Koomson stood at the polling station and fired a gun; power is temporary. After December 7th, we will prosecute Hawa Koomson. She will be held accountable for all her offenses,” he declared.

Meanwhile, Mavis Hawa Koomson reiterated that the gun she used in the well-known shooting incident at Kasoa during the voter registration exercise was licensed.

She explained that while her actions that day were regrettable, she fired the warning shot in self-defense after feeling threatened while visiting registration centers in Kasoa.

    Ghana’s financial inclusion reaches 96%

The Ghana Financial Inclusion Conference brought together leaders from the fintech industry and regulatory bodies, recognizing the country’s progress in bolstering financial inclusion.

Eva Mends, Chief Director at the Ministry of Finance, underscored financial inclusion as a global imperative aimed at ensuring no one is left behind.

She highlighted Ghana’s achievements in developing interbank payment systems and achieving milestones such as mobile money interoperability, pivotal in advancing financial access.

“Today we celebrate surpassing our national goal with a 96 percent rate of financial inclusion exceeding our targets of 85 percent. With rapid technological progress and a diverse range of financial services and products, we must continue to enhance financial inclusion to drive our country’s economic growth and development.”

While Ghana achieved 96% financial inclusion in terms of access to services, the 2022 Composite Financial Inclusion Index, which assesses access, usage, and quality, indicates 52.76% of the population are multidimensionally included.

Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Alex Ampaabeng, representing Finance Minister Dr. Amin Adam, noted economic challenges were easing and emphasized mobile money’s role in broadening financial inclusion.

“This call also concise with the period on the global and our national economy, we all believe is bouncing back strongly from the multiple shocks the country suffered in recent years. I believe these conditions are what underpinned the expectations that we can and should as a nation accelerate the scale and quality of financial inclusion in the era of the fourth republic.”

“It is without doubt that the financial sector is the accelerator of growth for every economy. A well-functioning financial sector is a catalyst for economic growth and economic development.”

  • Bawumia was forced to choose NAPO as running mate – Nyaho-Tamakloe

A senior member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has claimed that the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was forced to choose his running mate for the upcoming December elections.

This statement follows reports that Dr. Bawumia has named Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as his running mate.

According to sources, a meeting was held on Tuesday night where Dr. Bawumia sought advice from President Akufo-Addo regarding his choice of running mate.

This decision has sparked intense debate within the party, with many questioning the suitability of Dr. Opoku Prempeh for the role.

In an interview with 3FM on Thursday, June 27, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe alleged that Dr. Bawumia was forced to accept Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Energy Minister, as his running mate, despite concerns over the Energy Minister’s perceived arrogant demeanor.

He reiterated his claim from several months ago that Dr. Bawumia would not be able to make his own decision.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe questioned why Dr. Bawumia was not allowed to pick his running mate, unlike previous NPP leaders, including former President Akufo-Addo, who had the discretion to choose their running mates.

“I know for a fact that he can’t pick his own running mate and I made mention of this almost seven months ago and the reason is that simple.”

“Bawumia’s position, he will find it difficult to pick his own running mate. Rawlings picked his own running mate, nobody would dare bring anyone to him and say ‘This one should go with you’. He fielded Ackaah and he failed, he changed him to another person. Kufuor picked his own running mate.”

“First round, second round, I was present. Not that someone was telling me. Atta Mills picked his own running mate, Mahama picked his own running mate. Akufo-Addo, scene one, picked his own running mate, scene two, picked his own running mate. Why can’t Bawumia pick his own running mate?”.

  • NPP dictating Bawumia’s running mate choice – Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe

NPP dictating Bawumia’s running mate choice – Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe

A founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nyaho-Tamakloe has voiced concerns that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 December elections, is facing constraints in selecting his running mate.

Currently, Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is the presumed choice for Dr. Bawumia’s running mate. However, in an interview on 3FM’s Sunrise on June 27, 2024, the party stalwart alleged that Dr. Bawumia is encountering difficulties in making an independent choice.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe asserted that Dr. Bawumia is being pressured to select Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh as his running mate against his own preferences.

“Akufo-Addo in scene 1 picked his own running mate, scene 2 picked his own running mate. Why can’t Bawumia pick his own running mate? I know for a fact that he can’t pick his own running mate and I made mention of it almost seven months ago.

“If we are not careful, that alone can destroy our party. Bawumia is a nice gentleman but it’s not every gentleman who can be a good politician. I predicted that Bawumia will not be given a free hand because of their own interest to pick his own running mate, that has happened, he said.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe expressed skepticism about the party’s ability to secure victory in breaking the eight-year cycle, asserting that “those in control are not contributing positively” to the party’s prospects.

He further emphasized that President Akufo-Addo does not heed advice from founding leaders of the party.

He continued: “Kufuor listens but Nana Addo doesn’t listen. I’m saying it and I will say it again. Because if he listens then this hotel issue should not be an issue at all.”

  • Government to revise Chieftaincy Act – Stephen Asamoah

Government to revise Chieftaincy Act – Stephen Asamoah

The Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has revealed ongoing efforts within his ministry to amend the Chieftaincy Act, granting traditional leaders authority to adjudicate minor disputes within their jurisdictions.

A contentious issue highlighted by the Minister involves Section 63(D) of the Act, currently under dispute at the Supreme Court, which restricts traditional authorities from adjudicating local matters and limits their operational scope.

Speaking at the sidelines of a royal conference organized by the Church of Pentecost in Gomoa Fetteh, Central Region, Stephen Asamoah Boateng emphasized the importance of supporting and strengthening the institution of chieftaincy.

“The government appreciates your impact on the sound character formation of several thousands of generations of men and women in our country.

“Nananom, you administer a lot of work for the government, and in my interaction, we are amending the Chieftecy Law. In its place, we want to include some very clear authority to be given to the Nananom to be able to resolve petty disputes in your communities.

“This already exists in Act Section 62(D), but you and I know that it has been disputed in the Supreme Court, but we need to make some amendments. They will appreciate that we need to give Nananom back the authority, but it should be slightly amended, which I am working on very closely,” he stated.

Additionally, the Minister outlined plans to establish a Chieftaincy Development Fund, similar to the National District Assembly Common Fund, aimed at providing financial support to traditional authorities.

This fund would include living allowances, adjusted periodically to accommodate changes in living conditions and exchange rates.

“Beyond that, we need to also look at resourcing Nananom. The central government takes resources, and some must go back if we are given responsibilities to administer on our behalf and on behalf of the people.

“So, we are proposing a Chieftaincy Development Fund, similar to the National District Assembly Common Fund, and we are also looking at giving a living allowance, not the legal money that you come for sitting. These are living allowances, which means they will be adjusted when the exchange rate or the living condition changes, so Nananom can be comfortable when they are administering the country for all of us, he added.

  • Political campaigns must have a time limit – Mac Manu

Political campaigns must have a time limit – Mac Manu

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Peter Mac Manu, has proposed implementing time limits on political campaigns in Ghana to enhance governance and alleviate financial strains.

Speaking at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences’ annual public forum on “National Elections in Ghana: Issues and Prospects,” focused on “Regulating Campaign Financing for National Elections: A Comparative Perspective,” Mr Manu criticized Ghana’s prolonged campaign periods.

He argued that these extended campaigns hinder elected governments from effectively implementing policies.

“In this country, we used to say that the next elections begin after the end of the last election.

“How can you campaign for four years?” he questioned. Manu proposed that campaigns should commence only when the Electoral Commission (EC) has received and approved an aspirant’s candidacy, making them eligible to contest the elections.

Mr Manu underscored instances where candidates faced legal challenges due to rejected nominations, citing recent cases like the Assin North Constituency.

He proposed synchronizing campaign periods with the EC’s nomination approval, typically around September 19.

“So, if the EC has not approved your candidature, you may win your party’s parliamentary or presidential primaries, but you are not a candidate,” he explained.

Expressing concern over Ghana’s extended campaign cycles compared to Nigeria and Kenya’s shorter campaigns of about six months, Manu stressed the urgency for reforms.

He advocated amending Ghana’s Political Parties Act 2000 (Act 574) to regulate campaign financing, including setting expenditure limits for parties and candidates.

Having served as NPP Campaign Manager for the 2016 and 2020 elections, Manu highlighted the need for clear guidelines on election spending and criticized the escalating costs of politics.

He emphasized how these high costs exclude capable individuals, particularly youth, women, and persons with disabilities, from engaging in politics.

Executive Director of the Africa Centre for International Law and Accountability, William Nyarko, echoed Mr Manu’s concerns at the forum. Nyarko criticized Ghana’s inadequate campaign financing regulations and urged immediate reforms, including state funding for political parties to promote transparency and accountability in electoral processes.

AG submits evidence confirming Jakpa’s removal from military

The Attorney General has submitted into evidence the dismissal letter of the third accused, Richard Jakpa, in the case of the Republic, Minority leader, Cassiel Ato Forson and others.

This was to establish that Mr Jakpa’s departure from the Armed Forces was due to misconduct, contradicting his claim of an honorable discharge during cross-examination by the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The dismissal letter was issued by the Ghana Armed Forces in 2007.

The dismissal letter, read aloud in court, reveals Jakpa’s removal from the Ghana Army in November 2007 “for unsatisfactory conduct marked by fraudulent conduct, abrasiveness, general indiscipline” asserting that his behavior was incompatible with the Army’s standards of decency and gentlemanly conduct.

Signed by Brigadier General MKG Ahiaglo on behalf of the Chief of the Army Staff at the time, the letter also highlights Jakpa’s failure to advance to the rank of Captain despite eligibility, leading to his discharge due to inefficiency.

Before the Attorney General presented the dismissal letter, Richard Jakpa’s lawyer, Thaddeus Sory, objected in court, arguing that Jakpa had not been given the opportunity to identify or associate with all the documents sought to be tendered as evidence.

“We are objecting to the tendering of the letter addressed to the Attorney General through the witness. We also object to the document dated 12 September 2007, the addressee of which is not stated and also not copied to the accused person.

“The witness was not even given the benefit of identifying, let alone associating with these documents. He was only made to identify the letter dated 22 October 2007, and he explained that he had knowledge of it and could speak to it. No background was laid in respect of the first two letters which justify the tendering of those two letters through him, especially that he had denied knowledge of the other letters,” Mr Sory said in open court.

In response, Deputy Attorney General Alfred Tuah-Yeboah countered that the documents were relevant to Jakpa’s case as they pertained to his military release and were crucial in assessing his character.

Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, after considering arguments from both sides, ruled that all documents presented by the Attorney General were relevant and admissible, noting that Jakpa had acknowledged them and could speak to their contents.

During cross-examination, Jakpa admitted that his company received 28.7% of the government payment to Big Sea under an ambulance contract, totaling approximately 700,000 Euros.

The court session has been adjourned to Tuesday, July 2, 2024, for the Attorney General to continue cross-examining Richard Jakpa, with expectations that the process will conclude in the coming week.

NAPO’s track record makes him a better option for vice president role – Assafuah

Deputy Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation, and Rural Development, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has voiced his strong support for Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh as the ideal running mate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has proposed Energy Minister Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO, as his running mate to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Sources from the presidency informed Channel One News that a meeting was held on Tuesday night where Dr. Bawumia sought advice from President Akufo-Addo regarding his choice of running mate.

It is reported that President Akufo-Addo provided some guidance, shared his views, and eventually endorsed Dr. Bawumia’s selection.

In an interview on ‘Citiuation Room’ on Channel One TV, Mr. Assafuah compared Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s credentials to those of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

He highlighted Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s achievements as Education Minister, including the restoration of teacher trainee allowances and the payment of debts owed to special schools and school feeding programmes.

Assafuah believes Dr. Opoku Prempeh’s track record makes him a better option than Professor Opoku-Agyemang.

“When you juxtapose the credibility in terms of being an educational minister and that of Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang who has also been an educational minister before, one superintended over the cancellation of books and research allowances, one restored it, one superintended the cancellation of teacher trainee allowance, one made sure that that was restored.”

“One superintended over a number of amount of monies that were owed by certain categories of people in terms of special schools, in terms of school feeding and one made sure all these monies were paid. So that’s the ticket Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh has.”

Jakpa admits pocketing €700k (28.7%) out of Ambulance money
