Govt is dedicated to resolving global drug abuse issues – Akufo-Addo

In a statement delivered on his behalf by the Minister for the Interior, Henry Quartey, President Akufo-Addo affirmed the government’s dedication to tackling the global drug problem, recognizing the challenges posed by drug trafficking and abuse.

He highlighted Ghana’s commitment through the enactment of the Narcotics Control Commission Act, 2020 (Act 1019), which addresses substance use disorders as a public health issue, offering treatment, rehabilitation, and alternative livelihoods.

In partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Ghana launched the 2024 World Drug Report in Accra as part of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The event, held on Wednesday, June 26, centered on the theme “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” aiming to raise awareness and intensify efforts to prevent drug trafficking and abuse.

Hon. Henry Quartey emphasized that Ghana has faced the impacts of drug trafficking, drug abuse, and related health issues.

He expressed pride in Ghana’s recognition of the challenges in implementing international and domestic drug policies, particularly for the health and safety of the society.

“However, it is heartwarming to state that Ghana acknowledges the challenges with the implementation of international and domestic drug policies, particularly for the health and safety of the Ghanaian society” he added.

The Minister pledged the government’s support in providing necessary resources to the Narcotics Control Commission and other security agencies to enforce drug laws and ensure public safety. He called on Ghanaians, civil society organizations, faith-based groups, traditional authorities, and non-governmental organizations to support law enforcement agencies in combating drug-related issues.

United Nations Resident Coordinator, H. E. Charles Abani, praised Ghana for its significant partnership in addressing the drug menace in Africa. He reaffirmed the United Nations’ support in collaborating with Ghana to champion the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking.

The launch of the 2024 World Drug Report in Accra serves as a call to action for West African countries to intensify their efforts in combating drug trafficking and abuse. Ghana’s commitment to this cause is seen as a beacon of hope for the region, with its efforts expected to positively impact the global fight against drug trafficking and abuse.

The 2024 World Drug Report underscores the need for evidence-based approaches to drug prevention and treatment and highlights the importance of addressing stigma and discrimination against people with drug use disorders.

US gov’t calls for harsh jail sentence for Hajia 4Reall – Report

The United States (US) government has called for a stringent jail sentence for Ghanaian socialite, Mona Faiz Montrage, also known as Hajia 4Reall, over allegations of fraud and theft.

This development was reported by the Ghanaian blogger, Gossips24 Avenue, who claims to have obtained information from an official U.S. document.

According to Gossips24 Avenue, the U.S. government is pressing for a severe punishment for Hajia 4Reall to reflect the gravity of her alleged crimes.

The blogger shared that the document outlines the details of the case against the socialite, emphasizing the significant amount of money involved and the impact of her actions.

Hajia 4Reall has been under investigation for her involvement in a fraud scheme that allegedly defrauded several individuals.

The U.S. authorities are reportedly keen on ensuring that justice is served and that the punishment serves as a deterrent to others who might consider engaging in similar activities.

Meanwhile, Hajia 4Reall has appealed to the judge presiding over her fraud case for leniency, requesting a three-month prison sentence.

Through her lawyer, Hajia 4Reall expressed that her time in the United States has been extremely challenging due to her unemployment status.

In a heartfelt plea, she urged the judge to consider her difficult circumstances and grant her a short sentence to allow her to learn her lesson and then be deported back to Ghana.

This request is part of a collection of letters and documents submitted to the court, all pleading for leniency.

Hajia 4Reall’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, June 28, where the judge will determine her fate.

  • Informal sector represents 75% of Ghana’s workforce – Report

Informal sector represents 75% of Ghana’s workforce – Report

The informal sector remains dominant in Ghana’s labor market, employing a substantial 75% of the workforce. However, these jobs are often unstable and low-paying, contributing significantly to widespread underemployment.

The 2023 Ghana Human Development Report, published by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Ghana Statistical Service and NDPC, proposes several interventions to address these challenges.

It highlights the persistently high youth unemployment rate, with 65% of young people aged 15-24 experiencing joblessness, posing a critical obstacle to the nation’s future development.

Addressing these issues is paramount for Ghana’s long-term development goals, necessitating strategic investments in human capital, technology, and digital infrastructure to foster sustainable job creation and inclusive economic growth.

The report, titled “The Future Value of Work in Ghana: Pathways to Sustainable Jobs,” advocates for a holistic approach to align current employment opportunities with the evolving job market. It stresses the need for educational reforms that include STEM/STEAM education and entrepreneurial training, equipping youth with essential skills for future employment.

To effectively implement these recommendations, the report calls for collaborative efforts involving the government, private sector, civil society, and individuals.

As Ghana approaches significant milestones like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030 and its centenary of independence in 2057, establishing a national consensus on long-term development plans becomes imperative.

This approach aims to ensure that every citizen enjoys the benefits of decent work and improved living standards.

While visiting, CEO of KATH, Prof. Otchere Addai Mensah, highlighted challenges such as overcrowding and inadequate equipment.

A/R: Jurors’ strike delays proceedings for Otumfuo’s Akyempimhene murder case, 8 others

The murder case involving Otumfuo Osei Tutu’s Akyempimhene and eight other murder and rape cases being heard at the High Court in Kumasi have been halted due to a strike by jurors in the Ashanti region.

The jurors have stopped court proceedings once again due to unpaid allowances.

They previously went on strike in November 2023 for several weeks but returned to work after Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo promised to resolve their arrears following a meeting in Kumasi.

Despite assurances of timely payments, the issue remains unresolved months later. Jurors are now on strike over outstanding allowances dating from August 2023 to May 2024, citing financial difficulties caused by the delay.

Albert Ackah, the jurors’ spokesperson in the Ashanti region, reiterated their plea for prompt payment “Yes, it is true that we are unable to come to court because of our allowance. Our allowances always delay until we take action before we receive our allowance. This is not good; it is not proper for us to always chase our allowance before we get it.

“Today, we have nine cases and because we couldn’t come due to non-payment of our allowance, the cases couldn’t come on. So please, I am appealing to the government to release money to the judicial service, so that they can pay their jurors so that they can return to court. Nobody ever should say that it is the jurors who delay the cases.

“So, this small, tiny allowance that we receive here, why always we need to follow, talk until these allowances are received?

During her previous meeting with jurors, Chief Justice Torkornoo suggested they use their salaries from other jobs to cover transportation costs, as many are public sector retirees. However, jurors argue their roles as jurors and their personal finances should be distinct, emphasizing the need for prompt allowance payments.

“Most of them were in the jury system before they retired. They are receiving only a retirement package, or better still, their pension salary. They are using this money to upkeep their houses and their homes.”

Youth monitor NPP parliamentary ballot boxes at Walewale police station

A group of young supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) stood watch at the Walewale Police Station on Wednesday to protect ballot boxes holding votes from the constituency’s primary on January 27, 2024.

During the primary, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Walewale, Lariba Zuweira Abudu, was defeated by 35-year-old Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru. Dr. Kabiru secured 345 votes compared to Hajia Zuweira’s 338 votes.

Following her defeat, Hajia Zuweira contested the announced results at the High Court in Tamale.

The vigilant youth claimed that the NPP’s North East Regional Chairman and Hajia Zuweira were plotting to relocate the ballot boxes from the police station without proper authorization.

On Monday, June 24, the High Court in Tamale issued an injunction against Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, prohibiting him from presenting himself as the duly elected NPP parliamentary candidate for Walewale.

  • You are the brain behind state capture under your govt – Ablakwa to Akufo-Addo

You are the brain behind state capture under your govt – Ablakwa to Akufo-Addo

Member of parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has stated that president Akufo-Addo is using his position and authority to gain control over key institutions, processes, and resources of the state for personal gains.

Ablakwa’s accusation stems from the president’s failure to intervene in the sale of hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.

In a recent statement on his platform, Ablakwa, who organized the “Hands off our Hotels Demonstration,” criticized President Akufo-Addo for not halting the sale despite opposition from organized labor and widespread public dissent.

Ablakwa asserted that this inaction solidifies President Akufo-Addo’s role as the architect of systemic state capture in Ghana.

“President Akufo-Addo refused to stop the sale of our SSNIT hotels when he met organized labour yesterday [Tuesday, June 25]. Akufo-Addo’s appointed SSNIT board chair, Elizabeth Ohene is also boldly justifying the stinky deal despite overwhelming opposition from Ghanaians and the protest of labour representatives on her board.

“It’s now confirmed beyond any scintilla of doubt — President Akufo-Addo is the chief-architect of all the putrefying State Capture. It’s time to declare our own version of what just happened in Kenya. Watch out for the big announcement soon.”

SSNIT Board Chair Elizabeth Ohene responded to the controversy, acknowledging the political sensitivity heightened by Bryan Acheampong’s involvement as a government official and businessman.

She defended the transparency of the sale process, pointing out that it was publicly advertised in major newspapers.

Ablakwa further contested the suitability of Bryan Acheampong as a buyer, citing alleged financial losses at his Rock City Hotels. Acheampong challenged Ablakwa to substantiate these claims, offering to give away properties if evidence of financial instability could be proven.

The dispute intensified with Ablakwa claiming to have obtained documents from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) indicating financial difficulties at Rock City Hotel, which Acheampong vehemently denied, citing pending tax filings as evidence of ongoing financial assessment.

Throughout the exchange, Ablakwa maintained his stance on accountability, emphasizing that his oversight role as a lawmaker was not motivated by personal gain or material rewards.

  • Plastic manufacturers to halt operations in response to 5% excise tax

Plastic manufacturers to halt operations in response to 5% excise tax

Consumers nationwide may soon face reduced availability of essential plastic-packaged commodities, such as bottled and sachet water.

This impending shortage stems from the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA), which represents local industry players.

They have issued a firm ultimatum to the government, demanding an immediate suspension of a newly imposed 5% excise tax on locally manufactured plastic products.

The GPMA has cautioned that unless their demands are met, manufacturers are prepared to cease production for seven days to protest.

Speaking at a press briefing, Ebbo Botwe, President of the GPMA, stressed the government’s need to reconsider its stance and urged for renewed dialogue with all stakeholders to avert potential economic repercussions from the proposed production shutdown.

“We are appealing to the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to intervene in this matter because the effect of this consumer tax will really affect the masses. The common man and woman will suffer extreme hardship,” Botwe stated.

He concluded by issuing a direct warning: “We ask the GRA to stop the harassment of plastic manufacturers, and we give the Ministry of Finance one week to respond to our request. If not, all plastic manufacturers will shut down production for at least one week, and we’ll have no choice but to send home over 30,000 workers.”

President of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Association (GUTA), Dr. Joseph Obeng, echoed opposition to the new tax, urging the government to find alternative means to meet tax obligations without burdening local industries.

“The government is being insensitive to the business community. Let’s defer the implementation of the excise tax. The timing is not right, and it’s not fair when businesses are already suffering from the effects of exchange rates,” Obeng argued.

“This is not the time to impose another tax when so many taxes have already been imposed on us. Are we saying we do not care about the state of businesses?,” the GUTA president quizzed.

  • Ghana takes second spot in Africa for 2023 remittance flows – Report

Ghana takes second spot in Africa for 2023 remittance flows – Report

Ghana has achieved the second position in Africa for remittance flows in 2023, according to the World Bank’s 2024 Migration and Development report.

The country received an impressive USD 4.6 billion in remittances, highlighting the significant role of the diaspora in supporting the national economy.

Nigeria led the list with USD 19.5 billion in remittance flows. Following Ghana, Kenya ranked third with USD 4.2 billion, Zimbabwe fourth with USD 3.1 billion, and Senegal fifth with USD 2.9 billion in remittance inflows.

The World Bank emphasized the increasing importance of remittances, noting that remittance flows to Sub-Saharan Africa were nearly 1.5 times the size of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows in 2023 and demonstrated greater stability.

FDI flows to the region reached USD 38.6 billion, driven primarily by greenfield project announcements in Kenya and Nigeria (UNCTAD 2024).

“Remittances have become the most important foreign exchange earner in several countries,” the World Bank stated.

For instance, in Kenya, remittances now exceed the country’s key exports, including tourism, tea, coffee, and horticulture.

Countries more dependent on remittance receipts as a proportion of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) include The Gambia, Lesotho, Comoros, Liberia, and Cabo Verde, with remittances contributing more than a fifth of GDP in the first three countries.

The report also detailed regional growth in remittances for 2023, driven by strong increases in Uganda (15 percent to USD 1.4 billion), Rwanda (9.3 percent to USD 0.5 billion), Kenya (2.6 percent to USD 4.2 billion), and Tanzania (4 percent to USD 0.7 billion).

However, remittances to Nigeria, which account for approximately 35 percent of total remittance inflows to the region, decreased by 2.9 percent to USD 19.5 billion.

  • Nigeria hits milestone with T-Bills debt reaching N10.4 trillion

Nigeria hits milestone with T-Bills debt reaching N10.4 trillion

Nigeria’s Treasury Bills (T-Bills) debt has soared to N10.4 trillion, marking a 60% increase in just three months, according to the Debt Management Office (DMO) data.

This sets a new record for Nigeria’s highest T-Bills debt balance since at least 2010, based on Nairalytics’ analysis of central bank records.

The DMO, through the central bank, has conducted multiple Treasury Bills auctions in the first half of 2024. These auctions are crucial for managing inflation and financing short-term government expenditures.

Under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government, T-Bills have become a primary source of short-term funding, expanding significantly from N2.8 trillion during the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) era under Goodluck Jonathan to the current N10.4 trillion.

As of December 2023, Nigeria’s Treasury Bills stood at N6.5 trillion, representing 11% of the domestic debt portfolio. By March 2024, this figure surged to N10.4 trillion, comprising 16% of the total domestic debt.

This translates to T-Bills debt accounting for 4.37% of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In the first quarter of 2024 alone, the central bank offered N2.1 trillion in Treasury Bills, attracting a massive subscription of N21.7 trillion from yield-seeking investors.

Despite offering N5.64 trillion in total, yields spiked up to 21.1% in Q1 2024, prompting investors to shift funds from equities to fixed-income securities.

A further N1.64 trillion in Treasury Bills auctions was scheduled for Q2 2024, mainly to roll over maturing bills, ensuring continuity rather than repayment.

Under the Bola Tinubu administration, Nigeria has increasingly relied on domestic debt markets, especially T-Bills, for short-term funding, contrasting with the previous administration’s preference for Central Bank’s Ways and Means Advances.

The fiscal shortfall in government revenues has exacerbated reliance on public debt, with the central bank, under Yemi Cardoso, employing high interest rates to attract T-Bill buyers.

Despite oversubscriptions in most auctions, concerns persist over the rising cost of servicing Nigeria’s domestic debt, with actual yields nearing 30% per annum.

Moreover, Nigeria’s total domestic debt climbed to N65.6 trillion in Q1 2024, up 11% from December 2023, while external debt slightly declined to $42.1 billion due to reduced IMF debt.

Overall, Nigeria’s public debt amounts to N114.7 trillion in naira terms or $92.2 billion in dollar terms, surpassing the self-imposed debt-to-GDP limit of 40%.

The DMO attributes much of the debt surge in naira terms to currency devaluation, with only N7.71 trillion borrowed domestically in Q1 2024.

Rising debt levels have raised concerns about increased interest payments, potentially consuming a larger share of Nigeria’s declining revenue, as highlighted by Moody’s and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) warnings on the country’s debt trajectory.

  • Alcohol abuse led to over 3,000 mental health cases in 2023 – Mental Health Authority

Alcohol abuse led to over 3,000 mental health cases in 2023 – Mental Health Authority

The Mental Health Authority of Ghana has issued a warning regarding the increasing prevalence of mental health disorders linked to alcohol and psychoactive substance abuse.

In their latest report, the authority revealed that in 2023, there were 3,765 cases of mental disorders attributable to alcohol use and an additional 5,554 cases related to other psychoactive substances. This data, released on June 26 to coincide with the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, highlights a troubling five-year trend of rising mental health challenges due to substance abuse.

According to the District Health Information Management System (DHIMS), cases have escalated steadily from 4,155 in 2019 to 5,554 in 2023, predominantly affecting individuals aged 20–34 years. Alarmingly, children as young as 10–14 years are also showing signs of mental health issues stemming from drug use.

This year’s theme, ‘Evidence is clear: Invest in prevention,’ underscores the authority’s dedication to addressing the pervasive issue of drug abuse in Ghana. They have expressed deep concern over this trend and are collaborating with stakeholders to combat it through education, awareness campaigns, and policy advocacy. There is a pressing need, they emphasize, for increased investment in prevention strategies and evidence-based interventions.

The DHIMS consistently identifies mental disorders linked to alcohol and psychoactive substances as one of the top ten causes of outpatient mental health visits. The authority continues to stress the urgency of addressing these issues comprehensively to mitigate their impact on public health and well-being.

“Data from the District Health Information Management System (DHIMS) has consistently captured mental disorders due to alcohol and other psychoactive disorders among the top ten (10) causes of mental health outpatient (OPD) attendance.

“In 2023, a total of 3,765 cases of mental disorders due to alcohol use were attended to, and 5,554 cases with respect to other psychoactive substance use.

“The 5-year trend of mental disorders due to psychoactive substance use has shown a steady rise in the number of cases from 4,155 in 2019 to 5,554 cases in 2023, with the age range most affected being 20–34 years. It must be noted that children as young as 10–14 years are also presenting with conditions stemming from drug use.”

AG takes over ‘misinformation’ case involving Hopeson Adorye

Prosecution Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder has informed the Circuit Court in Dansoman that the Duplicate Case Docket concerning Hopeson Adorye has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General for advice.

Presided over by Her Honour Halima Abdul El-Lawal Basit, the Court has adjourned the case to July 31, 2024, for further proceedings.

Hopeson Adorye, a 54-year-old businessman, was granted bail on May 23 by the Dansoman Circuit Court after pleading not guilty to the charge of “Publication of false news.”

He met the bail conditions set by the Court, which included posting GH₵20,000 and providing two sureties, one of whom needed to be justified.

The accused, known for his involvement in education, was apprehended following his admission that he deployed explosive devices in the Volta Region during the 2016 elections.

During the bail hearing on May 23, the Court noted that the prosecution had ample resources to continue their investigations.

On May 23, Hopeson Adorye was formally charged with “Publication of False News,” as outlined in Section 208(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), and he appeared in person.

    Brief Background

According to the prosecution’s account, on May 21, 2024, the police administration was alerted to a viral video circulating on social media featuring Hopeson Yaovi Adorye.

In the video, the accused was recorded making statements indicating that he had taken steps to prevent Togolese nationals from voting in Ghana during the 2016 general elections.

The prosecution alleged that during an interview on May 2, 2024, on Accra FM (100.5) during the program “The Citizen Show” hosted by Nana Otu Darko, the accused admitted to enlisting the help of five individuals from the Volta Region to deploy “dynamites” along the Togo border to dissuade voters from crossing into Ghana.

Following his arrest for investigation on May 22, 2024, the accused acknowledged the contents of the video in his statement under caution and clarified that the devices used were firecrackers, not dynamites.

The prosecution reiterated that investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Madam Mensa expressed satisfaction with their return, highlighting the NDC’s significant role as the main opposition and a pivotal stakeholder in Ghana’s political landscape.

In an interview with JoyNews on June 26, she remarked, “They are the main opposition and they constitute a formidable force. It is a great benefit to all of us that they have returned to IPAC.”

She further explained that since their return, the NDC has provided constructive feedback that the EC has incorporated into managing recent registration exercises.

“The discussions have been going on very well. They have been very constructive. It has been valuable feedback that has come from the NDC as well as some of the other parties… so for the just-ended registration exercise there was valuable feedback that the NDC brought on board and we have considered quite a number of ideas and the suggestions and we have taken them on board so we continue to engage in a constructive way”.

Previously, on April 21, 2021, the NDC had declined an invitation to an IPAC meeting, citing perceived bias and lack of transparency during the 2020 elections.

Despite subsequent Supreme Court rulings, the NDC maintained reservations about the election’s integrity, although they publicly committed to rejoining IPAC in December 2023.

Since their return in January 2024, the NDC has actively participated in IPAC meetings, marking a renewed phase of collaborative engagement with the Electoral Commission.

  • Coming out of the hotels – Elizabeth Ohene writes

Coming out of the hotels – Elizabeth Ohene writes

When it comes to what subjects I write on in my column, it is often as the spirit moves me, always with the understanding that I am not the type of person to write on Ian Smith and Rhodesia on the day that three former heads of state are executed in Ghana.

Sometimes I do choose to wait out the noise on some subjects and then get onto it when I can see a different path from what had been trodden bare.

Four Mondays ago, I sent this message to the Editor of the Graphic: “I’m unable to write a column this week. All my instincts are to write about the brouhaha that has started about SSNIT and the hotels.

Since I chair the SSNIT Board, I feel inhibited, not because I have nothing to say but because I am not clear in my mind about the rules and conventions on going public with Board matters.

But then, I also don’t really want to write about any other subject and give the impression I am running away from the subject that is dominating discussions. So, I am afraid I am not offering a column this week.”

I have now gone for three weeks without offering any script for the column, and I am thinking that my continuing silence might be interpreted as disrespect or guilt of whatever I am being accused of.

Plus, last Friday, I went to the launch of a book, written by one of my favourite people and I really want to write about the book, and I can hardly launch myself back into the column without addressing the subject matter that took me off in the first place. So, here goes.

When the Board I chair was inaugurated in August 2021, the Director-General I met often said that SSNIT was like the Black Stars in the sentiments of Ghanaians, all 34 million of us have a view on it and with SSNIT, he thought the widespread interest was legitimate because even if you don’t contribute to the scheme yourself, your uncle, or niece or friend does and their tomorrows are at stake. We both agreed that pension funds are sacred.
    Front page

My constant refrain with my Board of Trustees is we should have at the back of our minds that every step we take and every decision we make, could end up on the front page of the Daily Graphic and we should be comfortable with the ensuing headline. I would then add my own personal credo that I had brought with me to the Board.

We met lots of outstanding matters that had been unresolved for years. I announced at every opportunity that I was not prepared to kick any problem down the road for the next set of people to resolve.

We would take decisions and try to resolve issues that come up. Maybe we would make some mistakes and if that is shown up, I would take responsibility, but I would not be paralysed into inaction by the fear of displeasing some people.

I did not imagine that my theories would be played out so graphically and tested in real time so soon. I am afraid I have not followed, as keenly as I should have, the discussions that have been going on since the Honourable Member for North Tongu started his campaign against what he has variously described as the SSNIT Board and management’s disregard for due process, abuse of power, corruption, lack of transparency, deception, procurement breaches etc. etc. etc.
    Woodin father’s Day

From what I can work out, there are a number of issues that are being raised about the decision to divest a 60 per cent stake in the shares of the six hotels owned by SSNIT: an ideological resistance to the idea of divesting shares in the hotels to a strategic investor, especially since some of the hotels are said to be profitable; the process through which the preferred bidder, Rock City Limited, was chosen, was corrupt; the owner of Rock City, Bryan Acheampong, is a Minister of State and should therefore not be able to bid for a state asset.

There are other side issues that come up depending on who is talking and the person’s individual idiosyncrasies. I will not try to lay out the arguments here for the need to divest shares in the ownership of the hotels, I will simply say that I was persuaded by the decision that the SSNIT Board had taken back in 2018 and I determined to make it a reality.

I am able to say with the utmost certainty that the process that led to the selection of Rock City as the Preferred Bidder was clean, above board and met every rule and regulation and can withstand every scrutiny.

Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa claims to have God and Ghana on the side of his campaign, and I would hope all of God’s Angels and Ghana’s investigative agencies, temporal and spiritual, would examine the process and tell the world if they find any irregularity or trace of corrupt practice. Indeed, if they should find any evidence of corruption, I will assume and accept responsibility and expect to be prosecuted.
    Political colouration

I accept that this being an election year, everything takes on a political colouration and Bryan Acheampong being the owner of Rock City is obviously the main reason the decibel level of the discussions has gone so high.

By all means, let us have a discussion about a company belonging to a Minister of State winning an open, competitive bid, no matter how fairly; but surely that is a different argument from whether SSNIT can, or is allowed to find private sector investment for its hotels and any of its other wholly or majority-owned investments.

Quite a number of things baffle me, but I will mention two: the suggestion that this was some secret thing being done that has been discovered and the sordid details are being exposed by a Member of Parliament and secondly, the suggestion that the President of the Republic, and by extension, the government took the decision and was in some way, in charge of the divestiture process of the shares in the hotels owned by SSNIT.

If you want to do something in secret, it would be very strange to announce your intentions with advertisements in the Daily Graphic, the Ghanaian Times and the Economist. And yet, that is exactly what SSNIT did when its Board of Trustees took the decision to seek a strategic investor to take a 60 per cent stake in the six hotels it owns.

The advertisements were followed by various public statements by SSNIT executives at various stages, once the process got going. Indeed, the last two times that SSNIT appeared before the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, the subject of trying to find a strategic investor in the hotels came up and SSNIT was urged to hurry with the process and conclude what it was doing.
    Strategic investor

So, one can safely say that some people in Parliament, at the very least, the members of the Public Accounts Committee were aware that SSNIT was seeking to divest 60 per cent of its stake in the hotels and the members did not sound like they thought it was such a terrible idea, nor that something untoward was going on.

Suddenly, Ghanaians are being urged to think and believe that getting a strategic investor to take a stake in the hotels amounts to a sordid crime. I am at a total loss to understand how the President and the government got into this.

Mr Okudzeto Ablakwa appears to know something I don’t. The Board of Trustees certainly did not go to get permission or even inform the President of the Republic or any Minister about the decision to seek a strategic investor to take a stake in the hotels.

The Board did not need such permission, was not obliged to inform the government and did not do so. I have seen no evidence in the records of past Boards going to the government or the President to get permission to make an investment decision.

The Board did not involve the President, nor the Minister, nor the government in the process. The Act that governs SSNIT makes no such provision and I had thought it was in everyone’s interest that the pension fund is kept away from government interference.

Obviously, a demonstration is more sexy when it ends at Jubilee House, but I assure the Honourable Member for North Tongu he was out by a long shot.

Government is yet to present Free SHS bill before parliament – Minority

Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has called on the government to promptly present the Free SHS bill to the House, emphasizing the minority’s support for any legislation aimed at improving and sustaining the Free SHS policy.

Addressing the media, Dr. Forson debunked claims that the minority will oppose the Free Senior High School (SHS) bill, which is yet to be presented before Parliament.

“We are here to address a major desperation on the ruling NPP and the members of parliament working for the government, particularly the majority leader. In the last few days, the majority leader is on record to have accused the NDC minority of not supporting the Free SHS bill. Let me put on record that there is no such bill before Parliament.”

“We are hearing from him, for the first time, that the government is considering a bill to be presented to Parliament called the Free SHS bill. As we speak, there is no bill. It is important for us to reiterate that we cannot oppose a bill we have not seen. We have not said anywhere that we are going to oppose such a bill. We are rather urging the NPP to hurry up in presenting such a bill to Parliament.”

He further highlighted that this is the first time the minority is hearing about the government’s consideration of a Free SHS bill.

“The minority will at all times support any legislation that seeks to improve and sustain the Free SHS policy,” he stated.

He also addressed accusations regarding the NDC’s stance on the policy, pointing out that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is on record expressing skepticism about the need for a Free SHS law.

“In fact, if there is anybody in this country who is on record to have said that he does not believe in the Free SHS law, it is rather Dr. Bawumia. He is on record to have said that there is no need for a law or a bill to regulate Free SHS, not the NDC. All he said we need is commitment.”

Bolts and knots of huge billboard in Ordorkor-Mallam road loose; disaster looms

A concerned citizen has voiced dissatisfaction over the state of a large billboard situated along the Odorkor-Mallam stretch in Accra.

In a viral video, he urged government to take immediate action before a potential disaster occurs.

He highlighted the deteriorating condition of the billboard and questioned why it has been left unattended for so long.

The concerned individual further lamented the apparent lack of value placed on safety and infrastructure maintenance by local leaders.

He called for swift action from the assembly to address the situation before it escalates into a major issue affecting public safety.

“Now look at this very careful, its situated at the Ordorkor-Mallam stretch, this is so bad. How can this huge billboard be left unattended to. Look at the bad condition of it, imagine this billboard falls one day. What are we waiting for? Even if its scrap dealers who removed the bolts as its being speculated, are we going to leave it until there’s a major problem? Why is it that Ghanaians are not of value to our leaders,” he added.

Ghana is advancing at a faster rate than Europe – Wontumi

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, has claimed that Ghana is progressing faster in development than European countries.

Speaking at a UK Town Hall meeting, Wontumi praised the policies of NPP’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasizing the unprecedented nature of these initiatives globally.

However, Wontumi highlighted a significant challenge for Ghana: the frequent change in political leadership every eight years between the NDC and NPP. He argued that sustained development requires continuity with one political party in power over an extended period.

“The policies our Flagbearer, our party leader and vice president is bringing have never been seen before in any part of the world. From my experience living in the UK and Ghana, I can confidently say that Ghana is changing faster than Europe.

“However, the problem we have is that from 1992 to now – the 4th Republic – it has been NDC, NPP. And so, after eight years, the party in government is changed for the other party to take over. Ghana will never develop unless we keep one political party in power for a long time before we can have a big transformation to develop our country,” he said.

Wontumi elaborated on the detrimental effects of political transitions, noting, “Since 1992 in the 4th Republic, it’s been a cycle of NDC, NPP. Every eight years, power shifts, interrupting development. Ghana needs prolonged political stability to achieve substantial transformation and development.”

He explained that each change in government requires a transitional period of at least two years, during which development stagnates.

Johnnie Hughes descends on Daily Guide for ‘attacking’ him after NPP govt criticism

A broadcast journalist at Media General, Johnnie Beresford Hughes, has criticized the Daily Guide Newspaper for a recent editorial that was targeted him and several other prominent media personalities.

In a recent broadcast, Mr Hughes voiced his disappointment regarding the editorial written by Kwaku Ogboro, which specifically singled out Johnnie Beresford Hughes, Ronald Walker, Berla Mundi, and Naa Ashorkor from various sectors.

Hughes expressed astonishment upon discovering the piece on page 4 of the Daily Guide, noting that he had previously maintained cordial relationships with those involved in overseeing its production.

This unexpected targeting, he emphasized, has left him questioning their motivations.

He also raised concerns about the nature of the criticism, pondering why posing thoughtful questions seems to provoke animosity rather than constructive dialogue from those individuals.

” Yesterday I saw on page 4 of the Daily Guide a very interesting thing on the editorial page of the Daily Guide. I saw a startling attack on me, Ronald Walker, Berla Mundi and Naa Ashorkor written by Kwaku Ogboro and I was asking myself that all those who supervised the production of this I have sat close to them in meetings and they know I smell better than them.

And there’s one called Offei Newton, who used to work at the Jubliee House who no longer has a job who also wrote that, who I know comes to beg for food to eat from a relative of mine. So I was asking myself that why will people not respond to the intelligent questions myself, Ronald Walker, Berla Mundi and Naa Ashorkor but decide to attack. If Alhaji my boss will supervise the production and publication of this means that he is complicit, he is no longer a victim he is a conspirator,” he added.

  • You think my 30-year working life cannot afford me a $133k property in Dubai? – Moses Asaga to critics

A former Member of Parliament for Nabdam, Moses Asaga, has responded to critics questioning his ability to purchase property in Dubai amidst allegations of corruption and illicit wealth accumulation.

These allegations emerged from a report by the UK-based think tank, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

The report implicated several former appointees of the Mahama administration, including Asaga, Inusah Fuseini, and others, suggesting they had accumulated Dubai real estate worth millions of dollars during their time in office.

Titled “How Dirty Money Finds a Home in Dubai Real Estate,” the OCCRP report, published on May 14, 2024, pointed to Dubai’s reputation for financial secrecy, portraying it as a haven for funds from questionable sources.

In response to these claims, the former Nabdam MP told Citi News that the accusations are politically motivated.

He questioned why his investments were being scrutinized and emphasized that his long career, including significant roles at Ecobank, GNPC, and as a Deputy Minister of Finance and Minister for Employment, justifies his ability to invest $133,000 in such properties.

Asaga countered the allegations by highlighting property prices in Ghana, where new apartments sell for over $200,000 and luxury residences in Trassaco range between $1 million and $5 million.

“I thought I had done something criminal and corrupt worth investigating. $133, 000, shouldn’t I be able to own such an investment? What are the prices of Trasaco properties $1m- $3m who are staying there? Is it not politicians and majority NPP functionaries? Has the OCCRP gone to put a story on them? This is a political machination.

“So, they think for my 30-year working life I should not have an investment of that paltry amount. Before politics, I worked with Ecobank, and GNPC and was Deputy Minister of Finance, Minister for Employment, and CEO of NPA. I could not afford an investment of $133,000 for a student one-bedroom apartment. What is the crime and corruption involved in this?

“In Ghana, new apartments are being sold for $200,000 plus, and Trasaco is $1m–$5m. Who stays in them is [it] not bankers, CEOs of GNPC, COCOBOD, BOST, and politicians,” he quizzed.

According to him, despite submitting all required paperwork and appearing before relevant committees to explain his decision, he request is yet to be granted.

Tema, Takoradi ports rank lower in 2023 CPPI

In the latest Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) 2023, Ghana’s primary ports, Tema and Takoradi, have shown concerning standings, with Tema Port ranked 376th out of 405 ports globally, and Takoradi Port ranked 274th.

This marks a significant decline from their positions in the 2022 CPPI, where Tema Port was ranked 205th and Takoradi Port was 245th out of 348 ports.

These low rankings underscore the urgent need for improvements in port infrastructure and operations to enhance Ghana’s trade efficiency and economic growth.

The top-ranked container ports in the CPPI 2023 are Yangshan Port (China) in first place, followed by the Port of Salalah (Oman) in second place, retaining their positions from the CPPI 2022.

The port of Cartagena has moved up to third place from fifth in 2022, while Tangier Mediterranean holds its fourth place ranking. Tanjung Pelepas improved to fifth, Ningbo rose from 12th to seventh, and Port Said climbed from 16th to 10th.

However, some ports saw a decline: Khalifa Port fell from third in 2022 to 29th in 2023, and Hamad Port dropped from eighth to 11th.

Ports play a crucial role in facilitating international trade, and their performance can significantly impact a country’s economic development. The low rankings of Tema Port and Takoradi Port highlight areas where improvements are needed to boost capacity and efficiency.

Potential enhancements include investing in modern infrastructure, streamlining operational processes, and adopting advanced technologies to improve cargo handling and clearance times.

By addressing these issues, Tema and Takoradi ports could significantly improve their standings in future CPPI reports, thereby boosting Ghana’s position in the global maritime industry.

The CPPI report, compiled by a team from the World Bank and the Maritime, Trade, and Supply Chain division of S&P Global Market Intelligence, serves as a reference point for improvement for key stakeholders in the global economy, including national governments, port authorities and operators, development agencies, supranational organizations, and other public and private stakeholders in trade, logistics, and supply chain services.

This is embarrassing! – Man decries immigration officers allegedly asking money from passengers at Kotoka

A Ghanaian man has raised concerns about the trend of some staff at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) soliciting money from passengers.

This particular act by these individuals, he said, reflects poorly on the country as a whole and could potentially damage its reputation or pride.

His remarks have sparked widespread discussions on social media, with many individuals recounting similar encounters.

In a widely circulated video online, the man highlighted that this issue has been noticeable for some time and seems to be worsening.

He recounted an incident involving a Nigerian traveler who complained about being approached for money while passing through Ghana.

Initially defending his country, he later admitted that the problem is pervasive, extending from the airport gates to the boarding areas, where various personnel frequently request money from passengers.

‘There is this thing that I have observed for some time now. I used to think it was a thing happening in Nigeria but it looks like increasingly, Ghana is becoming even more notorious

Last week I met a lady in Nigeria and she was complaining to me how she transited through Ghana and people were demanding money, I tried to defend us but you go see say the thing be true and you know, from gate to boarding, everybody asks for money

It’s out of hand,” he said, adding that even a Canadian friend had similar complaints about immigration officers demanding money.

The man further detailed a troubling incident involving a staff member at a boarding gate who subtly hinted at needing financial assistance.

“She said, ‘Oh, I’m done oo. I’m looking at you.’ Doing stuff suggestively that you are looking for money or demanding for money. You guys are embarrassing Ghana,” he lamented.

Present ballot boxes containing votes cast during NPP Primary – Court to Walewale EC

The Tamale High Court has issued an order directing officials of the Electoral Commission (EC) in the West Mamprusi Municipality to produce the ballot boxes containing votes from the NPP Walewale primary held on January 27, 2024.

Additionally, the court has mandated the Electoral Commission to submit the election register used during the primary to the court’s registry by the end of tomorrow, June 26, 2024.

The court’s decision follows a motion filed by the Plaintiff Hajia Lariba Zuwera, seeking the production of the ballot box and register by the Electoral Commission of the Walewale Constituency.

This ruling marks the second relief granted to the plaintiff within two days.

Earlier, on June 24, Justice Richard Kugyapaw of the Tamale High Court had issued an injunction against Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru, preventing him from claiming the parliamentary candidacy of the NPP for the Walewale Constituency in the North East Region.

The court’s actions stem from a challenge to the election results by the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hajia Lariba Zuweratu.

Dr. Abudu Kabiru had been declared the winner by the Electoral Commission in Walewale after securing 145 votes, defeating Hajia Lariba Abudu.

Following the dispute, Hajia Lariba Abudu filed a case at the Tamale High Court contesting the election outcome. Efforts by the NPP to resolve the matter through an out-of-court settlement were previously requested.

In a related development, the Tamale High Court, presided over by Justice Richard Kogyapwah, granted the NPP’s request for a six-week period to settle the internal dispute out of court on March 27, 2024.

The blame for the party’s internal discord in the Walewale Constituency has been directed at Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by Professor Naa Nabila Sulemana, the North East Regional Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders. According to Sulemana, Dr. Bawumia has the ability to mediate the issue given his familial connection to the former MP, who is his sister.

National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah has issued a stern warning to Ghanaians about assaulting members of the country’s security forces.

During a meeting with traditional leaders in the Northern Region, Kan-Dapaah emphasized the immediate need to halt the practice of attacking uniformed personnel.

He stressed the importance of providing unwavering support to security personnel so they can effectively fulfill their duties.

Kan-Dapaah underscored the vital contributions of Ghana’s security forces and urged the public to acknowledge and respect their efforts.

He emphasized that despite any grievances, citizens should refrain from resorting to violence against police, soldiers, immigration officers, or intelligence personnel.

“This is the time Ghanaians must learn to appreciate and support the work of the security agencies, the soldiers, the police, the immigration officers, the prison officers, and all the institutions that are involved in providing security.

“They are the people who have made it possible for us to feel secure. Going forward, they are the people who provide the necessary services for us to feel secure.

“It shouldn’t happen that whatever the provocation, you should attack a police officer or a soldier or an immigration officer or an intelligence officer.”

Ghanaian MPs on Kenya visit caught up in protest

Several Ghanaian Members of Parliament, currently visiting Kenya as part of the Local Government Committee delegation, found themselves amidst escalating protests in Nairobi.

As protesters flooded the streets, they breached the Kenyan parliament just as the Ghanaian MPs were present.

The unrest, which has persisted for days, escalated on Tuesday, June 25, as demonstrators flooded the streets near Kenya’s parliament.

Tear gas filled the air as police struggled to control the situation, exacerbated by public outcry over a finance bill proposing tax hikes.

The bill, initially contentious for its proposals including a 16% sales tax on bread and a 25% duty on cooking oil, eventually passed despite revisions aimed at addressing public concerns.

During the chaos, Ghanaian MPs were captured in a viral video being escorted to safety within the parliament building as police attempted to manage the protesters who had breached the premises.

  • Your govt has led almost 1m Ghanaians into severe poverty – Franklin Cudjoe to Amin Adam

Your govt has led almost 1m Ghanaians into severe poverty – Franklin Cudjoe to Amin Adam

Founder and President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has criticized Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam for asserting that the NPP government has outperformed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in economic management over their respective eight-year terms.

During a UK Town Hall meeting last weekend, the minister claimed superiority in managing Ghana’s economy, citing achievements in economic size, per capita income, job creation, and economic growth over the opposition.

“On the economy, our record is better than their record. In terms of the economy’s size, we’ve performed better than them. In per capita income, we’ve excelled over them. In job creation and economic growth, we’ve surpassed them,” he said.

Responding to these remarks in a Facebook post on June 25, 2024, Mr Cudjoe argued that many Ghanaians continue to grapple with economic hardships exacerbated by the Akufo-Addo government.

He pointed out that under this administration, over one million Ghanaians fell into extreme poverty due to what he described as poor economic management.

Mr Cudjoe also highlighted instances where the savings of thousands of Ghanaians were wiped out through financial losses.

Addressing Minister Mohammed Amin Adam directly, Cudjoe acknowledged the political context of the statements but urged him to recognize the severe economic impacts endured by citizens under the current government.

He emphasized the need for focused governance amidst what he described as fiscal recklessness and corruption in public procurement processes.

“My brother Mohammed Amin Adam, I know this is political campaigning season, but please, the wounds of economic atrophy birthed by fiscal recklessness and highway procurement graft, culminating in the ugliest of financial haircuts, demeaning the self-esteem of our pensioner senior citizens and shepherding almost a million people into hard-core poverty as never experienced in a generation, all supervised by your immediate predecessor with backing vocals from the presidency, are fresh in our minds. By all means, do your politics, but just stay focused on your caretaker role, which you are doing astonishingly well at,” he wrote.

I will represent CPP in 2024 elections -Nana Sarpong Kumankuma

The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has refuted claims that it will abstain from fielding a presidential candidate in the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections.

Nana Akosua Sarpong Kumankuma, Chairperson of the CPP, affirmed the party’s readiness to participate in the forthcoming polls. In an interview with 3news.com, she expressed confidence in the electoral process.

Currently, two prominent members of the party, former flagbearer Ivor Kobina Greenstreet and the incumbent party chairman Nana Akosua Sarpong Kumankuma, have officially submitted their candidacies for the presidential slot.

Addressing social media speculations about the party’s electoral strategy, Nana Sarpong Kumankuma attributed these rumors to internal frustrations stemming from delays in internal procedures.

She said, “Am definitely coming as a Presidential Candidate so do not want to engage too much on internal issues.”

She further indicated that, “myself and him (Ivor Greenstreet) were the only contestants who supposedly filed. We will see.”

The CPP, a Nkrumahist party, has faced internal challenges but remains committed to enhancing its appeal to voters and expanding its support base.

We don’t have a presidential candidate for 2024 elections at the moment – CPP

The Director of Communications for the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Sylvester Sarpong-Soprano, has revealed that the party is unlikely to nominate a presidential candidate for the upcoming December polls.

In an interview on Asaase Radio, Mr. Sarpong-Soprano cited ongoing internal challenges, including multiple court cases, as the primary reasons hindering the party’s ability to select a flagbearer.

He emphasized that with only a few months remaining until the election, the party has yet to resolve its internal issues and organize effectively, making it impractical to field a candidate.

Despite these setbacks, Mr. Sarpong-Soprano expressed optimism that overcoming these challenges could still position the party to contest the election successfully, particularly in light of Alan Kyerematen’s departure from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Drawing parallels with the party’s history, he referenced the 1979 election when the CPP capitalized on divisions within the NPP to its advantage.

“I am not sure we can present a candidate [for 2024] because of what is occurring in the party. The party persistently has not been able to organise [itself], and this is because of multiple repeated court cases challenging the chairman and leader, unless something dramatic happens within the party [I don’t see how we can field a presidential candidate].”

“The party (NPP) has been split, with Alan Kyerematen going his way, just as it happened with Dr. Paa Willie in 1979. And so, because we believe that history is repeating itself, it was possible that if we had a candidate, if we were organised on the ground, that we will do what we did in 1979 again.”

Ghana’s economy will grow bigger and better this year – Finance Minister

Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has confidently announced that Ghana’s economy is set for a strong recovery this year, despite recent challenges.

He highlighted that the economy is surpassing expectations, demonstrating robust growth rates that have surprised international organizations like the IMF and World Bank.

For instance, Ghana exceeded growth projections of 1.5% last year, achieving 2.9%, and surpassed this year’s forecasted growth of 3.1% with an impressive 4.7% growth in the first quarter.

“This year, our economy is going to surprise the world.

Dr. Amin Adam emphasized, “I can tell you that this economy is rebounding strongly. We are rebounding strongly, and it is surprising the world, even the IMF, the World Bank. They are all surprised. Last year, they projected our economy would grow at 1.5%, but we grew at 2.9%. In the first quarter of this year, they projected we would grow at 3.1%, but we grew at 4.7%,” Dr. Amin Adam said during a Town Hall meeting held in the UK over the weekend.

He further stated, “This economy will grow, and it will grow faster than everyone thinks.”

Addressing concerns about the Ghana cedi’s depreciation against the US dollar, he assured that measures are in place for the cedi to strengthen, aiming for a comeback after a challenging period where it depreciated by 20.1% in 2024.

Currently trading at approximately GH¢15.50 per dollar in major forex bureaus, the finance minister remains optimistic about the currency’s future performance.

I will reduce the current size of government – Alan Kyerematen

Leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has pledged to establish a streamlined government of 40 ministers along with innovative strategies to tackle Ghana’s current challenges.

As the December 7 general elections approach, the competition for the most efficient government is heating up, with the opposition NDC already committing to governing with just 60 ministers. Meanwhile, Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to lead with only 50 ministers.

Unveiling his Great Transformational Plan manifesto, Kyerematen emphasized his vision for a lean executive administration capped at 40 ministers. Addressing a supportive audience at a conference, he declared,

“I will reduce the current size of government and run a lean executive administration consisting of not more than 40 ministers”, he told a filled conference room as they cheered loudly.

“Eliminate soul sourcing in public procurement and contracting to ensure value for money” according to Alan will inform one of the cardinal means to eliminating corruption within government public procurement.

Kyerematen’s plan includes eliminating sole sourcing in public procurement to enhance transparency and ensure value for money, a crucial step in combating corruption within government contracts.

Regarding governance reform and constitutional amendments, Kyerematen advocates for extending presidential term limits to provide governments ample time for comprehensive development.

Additionally, he proposes abolishing the Council of State to make way for a new second chamber of Parliament.

This chamber would include representation from various stakeholders such as faith-based organizations, traditional authorities, professional bodies, artisanal associations, gender-based organizations, the private sector, labor unions, and people with disabilities.

Kyerematen argues this setup would ensure a more inclusive decision-making process that reflects diverse societal interests.

“I will abolish the Council of State and establish a new second chamber of Parliament with representation from key stakeholders including the faith-based organizations, traditional authorities, professional bodies, artisanal associations, gender-based organizations, private sector, labour unions and people with disability” arguing this would allow for a proper representation of interest groups in the decision making of the country.

With the unveiling of his Great Transformational Plan, Kyerematen positions himself as prepared to challenge the dominant political forces in Ghana and bring about substantial changes in the country’s political landscape.

My son proposed $150m to $200m for SSNIT hotels but his offer wasn’t accepted – Freddie Blay

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has confirmed reports that his son had expressed interest in purchasing shares of hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) in 2022.

In an interview on TV3 on June 24, 2024, Blay disclosed that his son, a prominent figure in the tourism sector, submitted a bid of not less than 200 million for approximately 7 SSNIT hotels, although his bid was ultimately rejected.

While Mr Blay did not specify the currency of his son’s bid, it was widely reported to be in United States dollars ($).

Mr Blay, who currently chairs the Board of the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), made these remarks while refuting accusations of state capture by his son, Kwame Blay, who was alleged to have improperly acquired the Labadi beachfront.

“My son is about 33, 34 (years old). He’s grown up, and involved in business. I don’t answer questions for him. But that apart, my son, if you care to know, is not just involved in hotels, he is involved in the tourism industry.

He further explained, “SSNIT offered to sell several hotels. He wanted a package and my son’s company Spartan (Ives SSA) applied alongside about twelve or so companies. He offered to buy it for over 150 to 200 million with a syndicate of banks supporting him and a well-branded hotel chain”.

Responding to this revelation, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, argued that Mr Blay’s disclosure undermines claims that the majority shares of four SSNIT hotels were sold to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, who reportedly bid US$61 million.

“We were told Bryan Acheampong offered the highest bid of US$61 million; now former NPP Chairman, Freddie Blay also says his 34-year-old son offered ‘150 to 200 million’ for the SSNIT hotel,” Ablakwa wrote in a post shared on Facebook on June 25, 2024.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Anyaa-Sowutoum, Emmanuel Tobbin, has pledged to ensure that every child in his constituency receives an education if elected as Member of Parliament (MP).

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Tobbin emphasized his belief in education as a crucial tool for bridging socioeconomic disparities, underscoring his commitment to this cause.

“For the youth, I am focusing on education. It is the only thing that brings equality between the poor and the rich, so I will do all that I can to ensure that all children in Anyaa-Sowutoum are well educated. We have already started; this year, I paid for the mock examinations for public school children across the entire constituency,” he stated.

When asked about his motivation for seeking the Anyaa-Sowutoum seat following the NPP parliamentary primaries in January, Tobbin cited his deep Christian faith and aspiration to serve as a catalyst for community development.

“When you are a person of God and you love God, you help people just as God does. Choosing to serve the people is akin to doing the work of God. Personally, I believe that the Christian and Muslim communities should take up the mantle of leadership to make it a better place to live,” he stated.

Ensure perpetrators of alleged assault on CSU student are punished – NPP to police

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is pressing for an investigation into the alleged assault on one of its TESCON members at Christian Service University by unidentified members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The victim, Nana Boakye, a student at Christian Service University, reportedly faced aggression from NDC members during a public lecture by former President John Mahama on the university campus.

According to reports, the altercation began when Boakye remarked, “Mahama will lose,” during Mahama’s speech, which allegedly provoked the attackers.

While acknowledging Boakye’s remarks, the NPP condemned the violence against him and called upon the Inspector General of Police and the Ashanti Regional Police Command to apprehend the assailants.

NPP’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, emphasized during a press briefing in Kumasi that justice must prevail in this case.

“He had done nothing wrong, but the NDC took advantage of him in an auditorium where we have police people, they slapped him and later on beat him mercilessly outside the auditorium.

“Our determined position is that the police will investigate this issue and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book. This morning he went to the police regional office to lodge an official complaint.”

“This should have been done much earlier but he wasn’t well, he was completely devastated. Today he feels much better and has gone to lodge an official complaint of the matter. Now we are urging the police to investigate this expressly without delay to ensure that the perpetrators are punished according to law.”
