Your govt has led almost 1m Ghanaians into severe poverty – Franklin Cudjoe to Amin Adam

Founder and President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has criticized Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam for asserting that the NPP government has outperformed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in economic management over their respective eight-year terms.

During a UK Town Hall meeting last weekend, the minister claimed superiority in managing Ghana’s economy, citing achievements in economic size, per capita income, job creation, and economic growth over the opposition.

“On the economy, our record is better than their record. In terms of the economy’s size, we’ve performed better than them. In per capita income, we’ve excelled over them. In job creation and economic growth, we’ve surpassed them,” he said.

Responding to these remarks in a Facebook post on June 25, 2024, Mr Cudjoe argued that many Ghanaians continue to grapple with economic hardships exacerbated by the Akufo-Addo government.

He pointed out that under this administration, over one million Ghanaians fell into extreme poverty due to what he described as poor economic management.

Mr Cudjoe also highlighted instances where the savings of thousands of Ghanaians were wiped out through financial losses.

Addressing Minister Mohammed Amin Adam directly, Cudjoe acknowledged the political context of the statements but urged him to recognize the severe economic impacts endured by citizens under the current government.

He emphasized the need for focused governance amidst what he described as fiscal recklessness and corruption in public procurement processes.

“My brother Mohammed Amin Adam, I know this is political campaigning season, but please, the wounds of economic atrophy birthed by fiscal recklessness and highway procurement graft, culminating in the ugliest of financial haircuts, demeaning the self-esteem of our pensioner senior citizens and shepherding almost a million people into hard-core poverty as never experienced in a generation, all supervised by your immediate predecessor with backing vocals from the presidency, are fresh in our minds. By all means, do your politics, but just stay focused on your caretaker role, which you are doing astonishingly well at,” he wrote.

I will represent CPP in 2024 elections -Nana Sarpong Kumankuma

The Convention Peoples Party (CPP) has refuted claims that it will abstain from fielding a presidential candidate in the upcoming December 7, 2024 elections.

Nana Akosua Sarpong Kumankuma, Chairperson of the CPP, affirmed the party’s readiness to participate in the forthcoming polls. In an interview with 3news.com, she expressed confidence in the electoral process.

Currently, two prominent members of the party, former flagbearer Ivor Kobina Greenstreet and the incumbent party chairman Nana Akosua Sarpong Kumankuma, have officially submitted their candidacies for the presidential slot.

Addressing social media speculations about the party’s electoral strategy, Nana Sarpong Kumankuma attributed these rumors to internal frustrations stemming from delays in internal procedures.

She said, “Am definitely coming as a Presidential Candidate so do not want to engage too much on internal issues.”

She further indicated that, “myself and him (Ivor Greenstreet) were the only contestants who supposedly filed. We will see.”

The CPP, a Nkrumahist party, has faced internal challenges but remains committed to enhancing its appeal to voters and expanding its support base.

We don’t have a presidential candidate for 2024 elections at the moment – CPP

The Director of Communications for the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Sylvester Sarpong-Soprano, has revealed that the party is unlikely to nominate a presidential candidate for the upcoming December polls.

In an interview on Asaase Radio, Mr. Sarpong-Soprano cited ongoing internal challenges, including multiple court cases, as the primary reasons hindering the party’s ability to select a flagbearer.

He emphasized that with only a few months remaining until the election, the party has yet to resolve its internal issues and organize effectively, making it impractical to field a candidate.

Despite these setbacks, Mr. Sarpong-Soprano expressed optimism that overcoming these challenges could still position the party to contest the election successfully, particularly in light of Alan Kyerematen’s departure from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Drawing parallels with the party’s history, he referenced the 1979 election when the CPP capitalized on divisions within the NPP to its advantage.

“I am not sure we can present a candidate [for 2024] because of what is occurring in the party. The party persistently has not been able to organise [itself], and this is because of multiple repeated court cases challenging the chairman and leader, unless something dramatic happens within the party [I don’t see how we can field a presidential candidate].”

“The party (NPP) has been split, with Alan Kyerematen going his way, just as it happened with Dr. Paa Willie in 1979. And so, because we believe that history is repeating itself, it was possible that if we had a candidate, if we were organised on the ground, that we will do what we did in 1979 again.”

Unfortunately, the friend absconded with the money and failed to construct the house.

Ghana’s economy will grow bigger and better this year – Finance Minister

Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, has confidently announced that Ghana’s economy is set for a strong recovery this year, despite recent challenges.

He highlighted that the economy is surpassing expectations, demonstrating robust growth rates that have surprised international organizations like the IMF and World Bank.

For instance, Ghana exceeded growth projections of 1.5% last year, achieving 2.9%, and surpassed this year’s forecasted growth of 3.1% with an impressive 4.7% growth in the first quarter.

“This year, our economy is going to surprise the world.

Dr. Amin Adam emphasized, “I can tell you that this economy is rebounding strongly. We are rebounding strongly, and it is surprising the world, even the IMF, the World Bank. They are all surprised. Last year, they projected our economy would grow at 1.5%, but we grew at 2.9%. In the first quarter of this year, they projected we would grow at 3.1%, but we grew at 4.7%,” Dr. Amin Adam said during a Town Hall meeting held in the UK over the weekend.

He further stated, “This economy will grow, and it will grow faster than everyone thinks.”

Addressing concerns about the Ghana cedi’s depreciation against the US dollar, he assured that measures are in place for the cedi to strengthen, aiming for a comeback after a challenging period where it depreciated by 20.1% in 2024.

Currently trading at approximately GH¢15.50 per dollar in major forex bureaus, the finance minister remains optimistic about the currency’s future performance.

I will reduce the current size of government – Alan Kyerematen

Leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, has pledged to establish a streamlined government of 40 ministers along with innovative strategies to tackle Ghana’s current challenges.

As the December 7 general elections approach, the competition for the most efficient government is heating up, with the opposition NDC already committing to governing with just 60 ministers. Meanwhile, Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has promised to lead with only 50 ministers.

Unveiling his Great Transformational Plan manifesto, Kyerematen emphasized his vision for a lean executive administration capped at 40 ministers. Addressing a supportive audience at a conference, he declared,

“I will reduce the current size of government and run a lean executive administration consisting of not more than 40 ministers”, he told a filled conference room as they cheered loudly.

“Eliminate soul sourcing in public procurement and contracting to ensure value for money” according to Alan will inform one of the cardinal means to eliminating corruption within government public procurement.

Kyerematen’s plan includes eliminating sole sourcing in public procurement to enhance transparency and ensure value for money, a crucial step in combating corruption within government contracts.

Regarding governance reform and constitutional amendments, Kyerematen advocates for extending presidential term limits to provide governments ample time for comprehensive development.

Additionally, he proposes abolishing the Council of State to make way for a new second chamber of Parliament.

This chamber would include representation from various stakeholders such as faith-based organizations, traditional authorities, professional bodies, artisanal associations, gender-based organizations, the private sector, labor unions, and people with disabilities.

Kyerematen argues this setup would ensure a more inclusive decision-making process that reflects diverse societal interests.

“I will abolish the Council of State and establish a new second chamber of Parliament with representation from key stakeholders including the faith-based organizations, traditional authorities, professional bodies, artisanal associations, gender-based organizations, private sector, labour unions and people with disability” arguing this would allow for a proper representation of interest groups in the decision making of the country.

With the unveiling of his Great Transformational Plan, Kyerematen positions himself as prepared to challenge the dominant political forces in Ghana and bring about substantial changes in the country’s political landscape.

My son proposed $150m to $200m for SSNIT hotels but his offer wasn’t accepted – Freddie Blay

Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay, has confirmed reports that his son had expressed interest in purchasing shares of hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) in 2022.

In an interview on TV3 on June 24, 2024, Blay disclosed that his son, a prominent figure in the tourism sector, submitted a bid of not less than 200 million for approximately 7 SSNIT hotels, although his bid was ultimately rejected.

While Mr Blay did not specify the currency of his son’s bid, it was widely reported to be in United States dollars ($).

Mr Blay, who currently chairs the Board of the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), made these remarks while refuting accusations of state capture by his son, Kwame Blay, who was alleged to have improperly acquired the Labadi beachfront.

“My son is about 33, 34 (years old). He’s grown up, and involved in business. I don’t answer questions for him. But that apart, my son, if you care to know, is not just involved in hotels, he is involved in the tourism industry.

He further explained, “SSNIT offered to sell several hotels. He wanted a package and my son’s company Spartan (Ives SSA) applied alongside about twelve or so companies. He offered to buy it for over 150 to 200 million with a syndicate of banks supporting him and a well-branded hotel chain”.

Responding to this revelation, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, argued that Mr Blay’s disclosure undermines claims that the majority shares of four SSNIT hotels were sold to Rock City Hotel Limited, owned by Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, who reportedly bid US$61 million.

“We were told Bryan Acheampong offered the highest bid of US$61 million; now former NPP Chairman, Freddie Blay also says his 34-year-old son offered ‘150 to 200 million’ for the SSNIT hotel,” Ablakwa wrote in a post shared on Facebook on June 25, 2024.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Anyaa-Sowutoum, Emmanuel Tobbin, has pledged to ensure that every child in his constituency receives an education if elected as Member of Parliament (MP).

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Tobbin emphasized his belief in education as a crucial tool for bridging socioeconomic disparities, underscoring his commitment to this cause.

“For the youth, I am focusing on education. It is the only thing that brings equality between the poor and the rich, so I will do all that I can to ensure that all children in Anyaa-Sowutoum are well educated. We have already started; this year, I paid for the mock examinations for public school children across the entire constituency,” he stated.

When asked about his motivation for seeking the Anyaa-Sowutoum seat following the NPP parliamentary primaries in January, Tobbin cited his deep Christian faith and aspiration to serve as a catalyst for community development.

“When you are a person of God and you love God, you help people just as God does. Choosing to serve the people is akin to doing the work of God. Personally, I believe that the Christian and Muslim communities should take up the mantle of leadership to make it a better place to live,” he stated.

A former businessman-turned-politician, Tobbin described himself as selfless and committed to advancing development in the constituency. He outlined plans to empower women, particularly mothers, through loans and training to bolster their businesses.

Ensure perpetrators of alleged assault on CSU student are punished – NPP to police

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is pressing for an investigation into the alleged assault on one of its TESCON members at Christian Service University by unidentified members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The victim, Nana Boakye, a student at Christian Service University, reportedly faced aggression from NDC members during a public lecture by former President John Mahama on the university campus.

According to reports, the altercation began when Boakye remarked, “Mahama will lose,” during Mahama’s speech, which allegedly provoked the attackers.

While acknowledging Boakye’s remarks, the NPP condemned the violence against him and called upon the Inspector General of Police and the Ashanti Regional Police Command to apprehend the assailants.

NPP’s Director of Communications, Richard Ahiagbah, emphasized during a press briefing in Kumasi that justice must prevail in this case.

“He had done nothing wrong, but the NDC took advantage of him in an auditorium where we have police people, they slapped him and later on beat him mercilessly outside the auditorium.

“Our determined position is that the police will investigate this issue and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book. This morning he went to the police regional office to lodge an official complaint.”

“This should have been done much earlier but he wasn’t well, he was completely devastated. Today he feels much better and has gone to lodge an official complaint of the matter. Now we are urging the police to investigate this expressly without delay to ensure that the perpetrators are punished according to law.”

Ensure your promises are achievable – Hawa Koomson to Mahama

Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has urged National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama to refrain from politicizing the closed fishing season for canoe and artisanal fisherfolk.

Hawa Koomson emphasized that politicizing the policy would not yield significant benefits for the fishing community.

Recently, the former president pledged to exempt artisanal fishermen from the closed season if he wins the upcoming December 7 elections.

Addressing the media following a stakeholder engagement in Accra, Hawa Koomson pointed out the impracticality of excluding artisanal fishermen from the exercise.

“I hear the former president going around to say that when he comes back, he is going to abolish the closed season. I let them [the fishermen] know that it is a law. So I did not even create it. It was the NDC that made the law. And they observed it in 2016.

“I am only continuing what is there because it has become a policy. I want to plead with the former president that he has been in the seat before and he is a former president. When he is before the people and making utterances, he should be very careful because things that you cannot do, you don’t promise them.”

Ambulance Case: Be brave and stand in the witness box – Edudzi Tameklo dares AG

The Head of Legal Affairs for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edudzi Tameklo, has issued a bold challenge to Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame.

Tameklo urged Dame to take the witness stand and testify under oath about his involvement in the ongoing case, questioning Dame’s willingness to do so.

This challenge comes in response to recent comments made by Dame during a town hall meeting with Ghanaian residents in the United Kingdom (UK), where Dame dismissed the NDC’s arguments, including an audio recording of his conversation with Richard Jakpa, the third accused in the trial.

Dame claimed that the NDC’s allegations fell apart during Jakpa’s cross-examination.

In an interview with Citi News, Tameklo suggested that Dame’s reluctance to testify raises suspicions.

“If the Attorney General was doing what is right, why was he worried about being recorded? This bravery from a safe distance should be dismissed with alacrity. You leave Ghana, go to London, and start making noise,” he stated.

Tameklo also highlighted an undisputed meeting between Dame, Jakpa, and a Supreme Court Justice, questioning Dame’s silence on the matter.

Tameklo challenged Godfred Dame’s integrity, saying, “If he is a man, nothing stops him from taking the witness stand. Let him declare, ‘I am Godfred Yeboah Dame, the leader of the Bar and the Attorney General of the Republic, and I am taking the witness stand.’”

“You have not disputed that there was a meeting between yourself, Richard Jakpa, and the respected Justice of the Supreme Court. You have not denied it. So, my question to him is, in the absence of any denial on oath from him, which of these stories should be believed?”

  • Land guard incidents rise in Ashanti Region

Land guard incidents rise in Ashanti Region

The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has issued a stern warning that it will arrest and prosecute individuals who hire land guards in the region.

REGSEC has emphasized that even the land guards themselves will face legal consequences.

This caution follows REGSEC’s serious concern over the increasing illegal activities of land guards in several communities within the region.

Land guards, organized criminal groups engaged in protecting land and property during disputes, often resort to violence, leading to violent clashes.

In a statement endorsed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, it was highlighted that historically, all stool lands in the Ashanti Region are under the authority of His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, with his chiefs acting as caretakers.

This framework provides ample avenues to resolve land disputes by appealing to His Majesty.

REGSEC urged residents to utilize appropriate channels for addressing land issues rather than resorting to land guards, whose activities pose threats to law-abiding citizens and contribute to violence.

The statement concluded with REGSEC urging the public to comply strictly with these directives to maintain peace, order, and safety in the region, emphasizing the collective responsibility to foster an orderly and peaceful Ashanti Region.

“Based on this fact, the Ashanti Regional Security Council requests all citizens in the region to use the right procedures to address their land disputes rather than to employ the use of land guards whose activities always threaten law-abiding citizens and result in violence.

“It is the expectation of the Regional Security Council, that the public will accept the above directives for strict compliance to ensure peace in the region. Let us all work together to make the Region an orderly, safe, and peaceful one.” the statement added.

‘Planting for Food and Jobs’ lacks formal policy document – Dr Otokunor

Head of Inter-Party and CSO Relations, Dr. Peter Boamah Otokunor, has disclosed concerns regarding the Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) initiative, revealing that there is no formal policy document for its implementation.

In an interview with Oheneba Boamah Bennie on Accra-based radio XYZ, Dr. Otokunor criticized the initiative’s inception under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), suggesting it was inadequately planned.

“There is no policy document for Planting for Food and Jobs policy; it was not a well-thought-through policy by the NPP.”

Dr. Otokunor underscored the efforts he made in obtaining clarity from the Ministry, saying, “I have personally gone to that ministry [Ministry of Food and Agriculture] to look for the policy document several times, and there is no clear policy on Planting for Food and Jobs”.

His comments highlight concerning deficiencies in transparency and administrative structure within the ministry.

Additionally, he explained that upon assuming power, the NPP integrated the program into the 2017 budget with backing from a $150 million grant from the Canadian Government.

This funding arrangement was formalized through an agreement signed by then Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta representing Ghana, and Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana Ms. Heather Anne Cameron on behalf of the Canadian government.

No mining concessions has been granted to foreigners – Minerals Commission

The Minerals Commission has rebutted claims made by Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi, Yusif Sulemana, against Lands and Natural Resources Minister, Samuel A. Jinapor, alleging improper granting of mining concessions to foreign entities without consultation.

In a press release issued on Monday, June 24, the Commission dismissed these allegations as groundless.

“The attention of the Minerals Commission (“the Commission”) has been drawn to publications in a section of the media, attributed to the Member of Parliament for the Bole-Bamboi Constituency, Yusif Sulemana, accusing the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources and the Minerals Commission of granting mining concessions to foreigners without proper consultations. The said accusations, claims and/or allegations are false, baseless and unfounded.”

The Commission emphasized that under the Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) and Minerals and Mining (Licensing) Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2176), mineral rights cannot be granted without consulting affected parties and relevant institutions involved in mineral operations.

The statement urged the public to disregard the misinformation propagated by the MP.

Yusif Sulemana had accused Minister Jinapor and the Minerals Commission of sidestepping proper consultation processes, which he claimed led to tensions in the Bole-Bamboi Constituency. He also alleged assaults on some NPP executives by soldiers guarding mining sites.

However, the Minerals Commission reiterated its commitment to adhering to legal and regulatory protocols in granting mineral rights, ensuring comprehensive consultation with all relevant stakeholders to address their concerns.

Stop acting as NPP PC for Walewale – Court orders Mahama Kabiru

The High Court in Tamale has issued an injunction preventing Dr. Mahama Tia Kabiru from identifying himself as the elected parliamentary candidate (PC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the Walewale constituency in the North East Region.

This injunction, ordered on Monday, June 24 by Justice Richard Kugyapaw, follows a challenge to the election results by the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Hajia Lariba Zuweratu.

In January of this year, Dr. Kabiru, a 35-year-old PhD holder and special advisor to the Vice President, narrowly defeated Hajia Lariba in a closely contested primary election. The election, conducted under strict security measures and attended by regional and constituency executives, saw Dr. Kabiru clinch victory with 345 votes against Hajia Lariba’s 338 votes.

Hajia Lariba promptly contested the results, filing an ex parte motion at the Tamale High Court accusing the party, Dr. Kabiru, and the Electoral Commission of electoral irregularities and misconduct.

She sought an injunction to prevent Dr. Kabiru from declaring himself the winner, a request that has now been granted.

During the primary, two other candidates, Tahiru Sham-Una and Jangdoo Mahama, received 145 and 1 vote respectively. Initially, the NPP, as a third defendant, attempted to have the case dismissed, alleging that Hajia Lariba had violated the party’s constitution by not utilizing internal conflict resolution mechanisms before resorting to court.

Before this ruling, supporters of the NPP in the Walewale constituency held a press conference urging the party’s Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to intervene and resolve the dispute swiftly. They expressed concern that failure to resolve the issue promptly could jeopardize the party’s prospects in the upcoming general elections.

In March, the High Court had previously granted NPP’s plea for an out-of-court settlement. Initially, on March 15, the party had requested the court to dismiss the case, but the court declined and imposed a fine of GH¢8000 on the party. However, the court did agree to the party’s subsequent request for an out-of-court resolution.

Four Ghanaians fingered in Dubai money laundering scandal – Report

A report being attributed to the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and E24 have exposed numerous politically-exposed persons (PEPs), sanctioned individuals, and wanted criminals who own property in Dubai.

Dubai’s appeal lies in its financial secrecy, zero property rates, and political stability, making it a prime destination for those looking to stash illicit funds.

Dubai’s expansive high-end real estate market and minimal scrutiny of buyers have made it a haven for corrupt political leaders and criminals to invest.

Leaked property data from the UAE has revealed that dozens of convicted criminals, fugitives, and sanctioned individuals hold properties in Dubai.

Among these are alleged political figures and their associates, including those involved in major scandals, who have hidden their illicit gains in Dubai’s real estate market.

After months of thorough investigation, four politically-exposed Ghanaians have been identified as owning $8,409,400 worth of real estate in Dubai.

These individuals are Anthony Alfred Benin, Inusah Abdulai Bistav Fuseini, Joseph Kwaku Asamoah, and Moses Aduko Asaga.

Here’s a detailed look at these personalities and their Dubai properties:

    Anthony Alfred Benin

Benin is a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana and the ECOWAS Court of Justice.
Appointed by former president John Dramani Mahama in November 2012.
Owns two apartments in the First Central Hotel Apartments valued at $412,300.

    Inusah Fuseini

Former Minister for Land and Natural Resources and Minister for Roads under the Mahama administration.
Owns 20 apartments in Dubai, spread across several high-end properties, worth $7,240,400.

    Joseph Kwaku Asamoah

Former finance director of Ghana’s Electoral Commission.
Involved in a GH¢480,000 scandal at the Electoral Commission in 2017.
Confirmed co-owner of two Dubai properties, valued at $623,600, acquired by another person.

    Moses Aduko Asaga

Former Member of Parliament for Nabdam in the Upper East Region of Ghana (1997-2013).
Former Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority of Ghana.
Owns one apartment in Dubai worth $133,100.

Mahama to address the nation on July 7

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer for the 2024 elections, John Dramani Mahama, will host a media engagement on Sunday, July 7, 2024.

“This major engagement with journalists is the first in a series of similar encounters that Mahama will have with the media before the December elections. It is an opportunity for him to share his vision for Ghana’s future and address important national interest issues.

In a statement, the spokesperson for the former President, Joyce Bawah Mogtari disclosed that “The forthcoming media encounter, a testament to Mahama’s unwavering commitment to transparency and dialogue with the people of Ghana, recognizes the crucial role of the media”.

The upcoming event underscores Mahama’s commitment to transparency and dialogue, recognizing the media’s pivotal role in informing the Ghanaian public.

“Media houses interested in attending to cover the encounter are invited to send details of the reporter and video operator, where applicable, to office@johnmahama.org”, she concluded.

MTN will be included in 5G rollout – Ursula

The Minister of Communication and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has clarified that MTN, one of Ghana’s leading telecommunications companies, is not excluded from the 5G rollout plans.

When the government announced its plans to introduce 5G within the next six months on May 30, industry experts questioned why MTN was not part of the consortium – Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC) – tasked with implementing the 5G network.

Addressing the issue on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, June 24, the Ablekuma West MP informed host Bernard Avle that MTN will be involved in the rollout at some point.

She refuted claims of MTN being deliberately excluded, calling them false alarms and far from the truth.

“I don’t know who created that impression. Somebody threw it out there, and nobody spoke to me or any of those involved in putting this consortium together before spreading this false alarm. It is not true,” she stated.

“…Discussions are ongoing. All network operators in the country are being offered the opportunity to take up equity in this Next-Gen InfraCo, all of them, including MTN.”

The companies that make up the 5G consortium are Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, and two telcos, AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana.

Disclose your status to your partner to check rise in HIV cases – AIDS Commission advises

The Ghana AIDS Commission has identified the failure of couples to disclose their HIV status to each other as a significant factor in the rising HIV infection rates in the country.

According to Director General of the Commission, Dr. Kyeremeh Atuahene, the lack of disclosure among couples, along with some HIV-positive individuals discontinuing their medication, are key contributors to the increase in infections.

“The fear of the husband or wife deserting them leads some not to disclose their status. Some are afraid their spouse may discover they are taking daily medication, leading them to hide or discontinue their medicines.”

He emphasized that women are more susceptible to HIV infection than men and urged women to take proactive measures to protect themselves from contracting the virus.

“Women must be aware that they are more vulnerable and therefore they should protect themselves. The transmission rate from woman to man is just about 2% whereas it is more than 12 % for a man. That is why women should not gamble with their health and their lives by just accepting that ‘if he will give them more money to have sex without a condom it’s okay for me’.

“It shouldn’t be okay for you, especially when you might have the untreated sexually transmitted disease, that can also heighten the chance of you getting HIV,” he entreated.

“Dr. Atuahene elaborated that the mucous membrane lining the vagina is significantly more delicate and susceptible to irritation than its male counterpart, making women more prone to HIV infection due to the increased fragility of their genital tract tissue.

“When a female has sex with a man, penile sex and the man ejaculates, the sperm which might contain HIV particles may remain in her for quite some time, whereas that of the male you hardly can see that.

“Secondly, the surface area of the vagina is much wider than that of the male and thirdly the mucus membrane of the vagina is much more fragile than of the male.”

The Commission reported that in 2023, an estimated 334,095 people in Ghana were living with HIV, comprising:

    – 115,891 males
    – 218,204 females

Breaking down the demographics of females:

    – Children under 14: 17,550
    – Adolescents (10-19): 16,381
    – Young adults (15-24): 33,245
    – Adults (15 and older): 316,545

I’ve told no one I want to be named Bawumia’s running mate – Ursula

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West constituency and Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has denied any claims that she has solicited media or individuals to promote her candidacy as the running mate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The conversation around nominating a female running mate for the NPP’s flagbearer has gained traction, with names like Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare and District Assembly Common Fund Administrator Naa Torshie being mentioned.

Despite her name being part of the discussion, Owusu-Ekuful clarified that she has never actively expressed interest in becoming Dr. Bawumia’s running mate.

“People may speculate about my name, but I have not told anybody that I am interested in any position. If the flagbearer thinks in his wisdom that I can assist him, why not?” the Communications Minister questioned.

She refuted any claims of reaching out to the media or individuals to promote her candidacy.

“No media person can ever say that I have contacted them to put my name out there, or anybody for that matter.”

According to her, Dr. Bawumia should be allowed to choose whoever he thinks will best partner him in the upcoming polls.

“I think the flagbearer should be given the space to choose who he thinks can best partner him. It would be great if a female is chosen, and I made this call eight years ago,” Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful added.

  • Surfline and other broadband providers collapsed due auctioning of 4G spectrum – Ursula

Surfline and other broadband providers collapsed due auctioning of 4G spectrum – Ursula

The collapse of broadband service providers like Surfline has been attributed by the Minister for Communication and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, to the 2015 decision to auction the 4G spectrum primarily to mobile networks, particularly MTN.

Owusu-Ekuful highlighted that this auction significantly disadvantaged broadband operators while favoring mobile operators, leading directly to the demise of local broadband wireless companies.

In an exclusive interview with Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM, she emphasized the government’s recognition of the adverse impact on these operators and expressed ongoing efforts to support their sustainability.

“Decisions taken in 2015 led directly to the collapse of these companies, these local broadband wireless operators who didn’t stand the chance once the space was opened up to the mobile network operators.

“It is as if we gave with one hand and took with the other. I have had extensive conversations with them to see how we can support them and it is not just Surfline which exited the market but Blue Broadband was also in there.”

According to Owusu-Ekuful, the auctioning of the 4G spectrum began weakening broadband providers, despite earlier assurances of exclusivity in the broadband space for local operators.

“Government sold spectrum to local operators to do broadband on the understanding that they would be given exclusivity in that space, while mobile network operators did voice and procured data services from them [broadband operators] if they wanted to give those data services to their subscribers.

“After promising them exclusivity, we went ahead and auctioned the 4G to these same big players, who MTN then acquired the spectrum because it has so much more financial muscle than these local entities and so MTN cornered the market.

The minister underscored that the spectrum’s pricing at the time made it accessible only to MTN, consolidating its position and marginalizing smaller broadband operators.

“At the price, the spectrum was pegged at the time, it was only MTN that could buy it and that made it possible for them to corner the high-speed data market and blow the rest of the operators out of the market.”

Kasoa ritual killing and other trials in limbo due to jury strike

The ongoing strike by jurors since May 16 has severely disrupted several important trials, including the highly publicized Ritual killing case involving two boys who have been accused of murdering a ten-year-old boy.

Trials like those of Gregory Afoko, JB Danquah, and the Abessim murder have also been significantly impacted due to jurors’ protests over unpaid allowances.

In the Kasoa case, Nicholas Kini, the second accused, concluded his defense on February 14, 2024. The court awaited closing arguments from the prosecution and defense, as well as final instructions from the judge to the jury for their deliberations and verdict.

Originally set for May 7, the proceedings were postponed to June 24 as the judge had not finished summing up. However, on June 24, court proceedings could not proceed due to the jury strike.

Justice Lydia Osei Marfo, presiding over the case on Monday, lamented the strike, calling it regrettable for the judicial process.

    Opambour ‘freestyles’ song for Mahama

The leader of the Ebenezer Miracle Worship Centre, Prophet Ebenezer Adarkwa Yiadom, widely known as Opambour has publicly endorsed the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.

During a recent broadcast on his television show, Opambour expressed his support through a song dedicated to Mahama.

Opambour emphasized Mahama’s extensive experience and suitability for the presidency.

He urged Ghanaian voters to prioritize Mahama’s proven leadership over what he criticized as Vice President Bawumia’s “experimental” approach.

Opambour expressed concerns that Bawumia’s comparison of himself to a “driver’s mate” could potentially expose President Akufo-Addo to public mockery, implying a deliberate separation from his own administration in an effort to win public approval before the elections.

Opambour questioned, “Is Bawumia implying that as ‘mate,’ he should not be held accountable if the ‘driver’ (President Akufo-Addo) behaves recklessly?”

He criticized Bawumia’s assertion that his suggestions to President Akufo-Addo go unheeded, stressing the need for unity and accountability in governance.

“He [Dr. Bawumia] is implying that he is the mate so we should put all the blame on the driver? Is he insinuating that if the driver is driving recklessly, there is nothing he can do about it because he is the mate?”

“Also, he is saying that as the vice president, when he makes a suggestion, Nana Addo doesn’t heed. That’s not right; he should own up to what’s happening and that will show that he is with him. He is exposing Akufo-Addo to public ridicule which is not prudent,” Opambour said.

During his inaugural address as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer at the UPSA auditorium in Accra on February 7, 2024, Dr. Bawumia likened his role in government to that of a “driver’s mate.”

He pledged to pursue his vision and priorities if elected president, urging Ghanaians not to judge him solely on the current government’s performance.

Some members of the Ghanaian diaspora in London have voiced their growing dissatisfaction with the current political landscape in their homeland.

In a public demonstration, attendees took to the streets to highlight their concerns and grievances, particularly targeting the ruling party, New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Many participants emphasized their disillusionment with the government, citing a range of issues including governance challenges and economic hardships prevailing in Ghana.

According to them, the party’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will have nothing to offer if he becomes the country’s president.

The demonstration served as a platform for diaspora members to express solidarity with fellow citizens back home and to call for meaningful change.

Ablakwa submits RTI to SSNIT for details on Rock City’s tax clearance certificate

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Member of Parliament for North Tongu, has filed a Right to Information (RTI) application with the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT).

His request seeks information regarding Rock City’s Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Tax Clearance Certificate.

Ablakwa alleged that Rock City Hotel, owned by Ghana’s Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, did not file tax returns for 2021 and 2022 despite bidding for a 60% stake in four SSNIT-owned hotels.

He argued this violates the Income Tax Act, 2015 (Act 896) and SSNIT’s Pre-Qualification Criteria, which should have led to Rock City’s disqualification.

In addition to the tax issues, Ablakwa has also requested the complete evaluation report and minutes of all tender committee meetings related to the hotel sale.

Highlighting the importance of transparency and accountability, Ablakwa urged SSNIT to promptly fulfill his RTI requests.

“Evidence that the Rock City Hotel Limited’s (with registration number CS075262016) bid for SSNIT’s hotels complied with the Income Tax Act, 2015 (Act 896) and SSNIT’s own pre-qualification criteria as advertised for Project Number: GR/SSNIT/CS/0001/2022 which mandated all bidders to present a valid Ghana Revenue Authority Tax Clearance Certificate.”

“This request has become imperative considering that Rock City’s record at GRA, which is now available to me, incontrovertibly confirms that Rock City did not file its annual tax returns in the fiscal years of 2021 and 2022. Indeed, Rock City’s attempt to file their annual tax returns for the years in issue were carried out belatedly in 2023 and 2024 respectively, long after SSNIT’s advertised deadline of 23rd March 2022.”

“The unimpeachable records also show that Rock City was fined an amount of GHS 4,390.00 by GRA as a penalty for filing the 2022 tax returns two years late, that is on May 23, 2024,” am excerpt of his petition said.

Bridge at Amasaman Constituency in critical state

Residents of Otuaplem and Kojo Ashong in the Amasaman Constituency are deeply troubled by the deteriorating condition of a bridge connecting their communities.

The bridge, currently in a state of disrepair, has sparked significant concern among locals due to fears of potential dangers.

The situation is exacerbated by the ongoing rainy season, which is causing the nearby Densu river to rise. There is a real fear that soon the bridge may become submerged, rendering it impassable and posing severe risks to commuters.

“I cross this bridge every day to get to school,” said a resident. “Lately, I’ve noticed some of the loose railings getting worse. I hope someone takes a look at it soon,” he added.

Residents have pointed out that there have been no recent repairs undertaken by local authorities despite the obvious deterioration of the bridge.

The increasingly precarious condition of the bridge has become a pressing concern for the community, prompting urgent appeals to local authorities to take immediate action. The residents fear that unless the bridge is promptly repaired, a tragic incident is inevitable.

I spent seven days in a dirty bunker before being deported – The New Force spokesperson

A Belgian national and spokesperson for The New Force, Shalimar Abbiusi, has highlighted what she describes as brutal treatment by Ghanaian law enforcement before her deportation.

The philanthropist and former beauty queen lamented that her experience was a violation of her rights.

In an exclusive interview with Dr. Ren on ‘As It Is in Ghana’ on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM in the UK, Shalimar Abbiusi revealed she is seeking legal redress at the ECOWAS court.

She expressed distress at being unable to achieve her goals but believes she can still make a difference from afar.

“I do believe that you don’t have to be physically present to make an impact or to create change. That is why I am telling my story and letting people know how we can continue to create change,” she said.

Abbiusi stated she would not have taken her case to the ECOWAS court if she had been treated humanely.

She expressed a desire to return to Ghana to continue her positive impact.

“I am currently in the ECOWAS court fighting the violation of my human rights. I definitely think that will have a positive impact on my coming back to Ghana. After the elections, I am very keen on coming back to continue doing more. I don’t think it was just at all. If that were the case, I wouldn’t be fighting it in the ECOWAS court. There have been so many human rights violations throughout the whole process of my incarceration, from start to finish. I think we have to speak up about this,” she emphasized.

She urged Ghanaians to speak up against the brutal treatment of detainees by the Immigration Service and the National Intelligence Bureau.

“I think we have to shed light on certain issues, on human rights violations, because of what I have seen and what I have been exposed to. If this is what they are doing to me, how much are Africans and Ghanaians suffering every day? It is really important that we speak up and not be silenced. I want to be a voice for the voiceless and speak up for those who nobody is listening to,” she added.

When asked if the deportation affected her emotionally, she answered affirmatively, saying, “It affected me emotionally. It was a traumatic experience.” She revealed to the host that she was locked up with men and other nationals from other countries. “I was shocked, honestly. I was appalled that some people were sitting there for nine months without any legal representation, without a phone call, without anything for immigration issues, and I don’t think that was right.”

“After that, I was transferred to the National Intelligence Bureau, which was a more secluded cell with maximum security. I was there for seven days. And it was a horrible experience. People are not speaking about this because they are being silenced. I think it is my responsibility now to speak for those people because it is inhumane. The food was the least of my problems. There were feedings three times a day; they gave us ‘gobe’, banku, and tea with bread.

“But the circumstances there were inhumane. There was no opportunity for me to change clothes; it was very dirty; there was just a thin mattress on the floor; there was just a small piece of soap to wash yourself; there was no cleaning underway. So it was just a big black bunker,” she added.

She indicated a desire to return to Ghana, calling it her second home. She has a strong network, proper paperwork, and has established her life there, still considering Ghana her home.

  • Ghana can only thrive if vote-buying is banned – Archbishop Adonteng Boateng

Ghana can only thrive if vote-buying is banned – Archbishop Adonteng Boateng

Ghanaian-American theologian and philanthropist, Archbishop Kofi Adonteng Boateng, has urged Ghanaians to refrain from accepting money from political candidates in exchange for votes.

He emphasized that the nation’s issues, such as economic challenges and power outages (dumsor), will persist if leaders are not elected through fair means.

In an interview with Ghanaian blogger, Zionfelix, he described a scenario where a politician who spends a large sum of money to secure votes would likely recoup that investment by inflating project budgets once in power.

The Archbishop called for a law to be enacted that bars vote-buying to address this problem.

“People should not accept money from politicians to vote; otherwise, Ghana will never thrive, and ‘dumsor’ will continue. If I aim to become president and distribute about $500 billion, once in office, I must recover that money. For instance, if there’s a road construction budget, I would divide it by six, keep five parts, and allocate one part to the actual project.

“And then we will remain in a state of hardship. The nation should enact a law that prohibits vote-buying during elections. When vote-buying occurs, it corrupts the election. Therefore, citizens should heed the messages of political candidates and vote conscientiously,” Archbishop Adonteng stated.

The clergyman’s comments were in reference to the upcoming 2024 elections and their potential impact on the nation, depending on the electoral outcome.

The general elections are scheduled for December 7, 2024.

You can’t condemn current sale of SSNIT hotels because you did same during your administration – PNP Chair tells NDC

Chairperson of the newly formed People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Asana Nabla, has criticized members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) who participated in the ‘Hands Off Our Hotels’ demonstration.

She pointed out that during the NDC’s regime, they also sold assets belonging to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), making their condemnation of the controversial sale of some SSNIT hotels to Rock City Hotel hypocritical.

In an interview with Keminni Amanor on TV3’s Hot Issues on June 13, Nabla stated,“SSNIT properties, hotels were sold under the NDC regime, and I wanted to write on a placard – ‘Operation vote NPP and NDC out’. They were sold to their party sympathisers – it doesn’t matter. None of them who did [participated in] the demonstration had the moral right to be there,” Janet Nabla observed.

As the former General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Nabla emphasized that the PNP did not join the NDC Minority MPs in the protest because it did not meet their standards.

“The PNP, we object the sale of government properties into individuals’ hands. They did a demonstration; we [PNP] were not part of the demonstration because the way they captured it, we did not fit in.”

Addressing the perceived hypocrisy, she added, “Those who sold assets are now protesting another sale. Instead of letting the PNP critique both NDC and NPP, they were there holding placards.”

    Hands Off Our Hotels Demonstration

On June 18, 2024, protesters took to the streets of Accra to demand a halt to the sale of a 60% stake in four SSNIT-owned hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Food and Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong. The demonstration, led by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, started at the Labadi Beach Hotel and ended at the Christ the King Church.

Ablakwa, along with Organized Labour and other stakeholders, questioned the selection process of Rock City as the buyer and called for an immediate halt to the sale.

The calls for transparency and accountability in the sale of SSNIT’s hotel stakes reflect a broader demand for integrity in public asset management.

Ghana’s economy expanded rapidly from 2017 to 2019 – Ahiagbah

Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has emphasized the need to remind Ghanaians that Ghana’s economy was among the fastest-growing in the world from 2017 to 2019, prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr. Ahiagbah highlighted that during this period, the government introduced several pro-poor policies, including the implementation of the free senior high school program.

Despite the economic impacts of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine war, he noted that Ghana has made significant progress in addressing economic challenges. He expressed confidence that the NPP will win this year’s general elections to continue their development programs.

“The World Bank declared Ghana as one of the fastest growing economies in the world, not Africa between 2027 and 2019 then Covid came to hit the global economy. It is always important to tell Ghanaians where we have come from,” he told journalists in Kumasi on Monday, June 24.

He stressed that “The NPP will win the elections this year because we have done it before and we know how to do it, we admit that times are had but we are turning the corner.

“The economy has picked up in the first quarter of this expanding 4.7 percent, with this, it shows that progressively we are moving forward.”

According to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Ghana’s GDP increased by 4.7% in volume terms in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. When seasonally adjusted, real GDP grew by 1.2% in the first quarter of 2024, up by 0.2 percentage points from the fourth quarter of 2023.

Key growth drivers in Quarter 1 2024 included Mining & Quarrying (12.9%), Information & Communication (17.9%), Crops (4.3%), Construction (8.2%), and Accommodation and Food Service Activities (9.4%). However, five sub-sectors contracted in the fourth quarter of 2023: Health (-8.8%), Electricity (-7.5%), Public Administration (-5.3%), Education (-4.9%), Other Personal Service Activities (-2.9%), and Forestry & Logging (-1.2%).

GDP growth, the primary indicator of economic performance, is measured using three approaches: the output approach, the expenditure approach, and the income approach.

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) has introduced Over-The-Counter Market trading tailored for rural banks and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), marking a significant stride towards enhancing financial inclusion nationwide.

This new initiative establishes a platform for trading securities that are not listed on the main exchange, aiming to broaden access to financial markets.

Managing Director of the GSE, Abena Amoah, expressed optimism that the new product will bolster the growth of the capital market. She encouraged small business owners to utilize the platform to secure affordable funding for expanding their operations.

“We believe that as a stock market, this platform is needed to encourage small businesses and the community banks to raise funds and also for shareholders to offload shares smoothly. This is a step in the right direction to support growth and expansion, “she said.

She underscored that the Over-The-Counter Market aligns with the overarching strategy outlined by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Ghana Stock Exchange to develop the country’s capital market.

Amoah highlighted that the platform aims to attract rural and community banks currently not listed on the stock exchange, offering them opportunities to trade shares and strengthen their operational capabilities, thereby providing investors with additional investment avenues.

Alex Kwasi Awuah, Chief Executive of ARB Apex Bank, welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its timeliness for rural banks to access patient capital.

“As community and rural banks, you know we are not listed on the stock market but we need investors to support our operations so we can serve our rural folks. This is a good opportunity for many of us. We believe this will help strengthen us,” he said.

All rural and community banks are expected to register and participate in this new trading platform to leverage its benefits fully.

Borteyman Sports Complex taken over by popular church

A church was been spotted conducting a service at the Borteyman Sports Complex.

Originally built for sporting events and managed by the National Sports Authority, the facility is now being used for church services by some congregations.

In a viral video, one of the arenas at the Borteyman Sports Complex has been transformed into a church hall.

According to reports the Christ Embassy Church, Legon Central Assembly, is using the venue for their regular services.

It’s worth noting that on June 4, some University of Ghana students were bused for a “fun trip,” only to find themselves attending a church service at the Borteyman Sports Complex.

Although the report did not specify the church, it did confirm that the venue has been used as a place of worship for some time.

The Borteyman Sports Complex features a 1,000-seat swimming facility, which includes a 10-lane competition pool and an eight-lane warm-up pool.

Additionally, it houses a multipurpose sports hall that can accommodate 1,000 spectators for events such as basketball, badminton, netball, table tennis, and weightlifting.

The complex also includes a 500-seat temporary dome for sports like handball, volleyball, judo, karate, taekwondo, fencing, and arm-wrestling, as well as a five-court tennis facility with a 1,000-seat center court.

  • GRA to implement stricter guidelines on Excise Duty bonds, security issuance

GRA to implement stricter guidelines on Excise Duty bonds, security issuance

The Head of the Excise Unit at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Kwabena Apau Awua Anto, has emphasized the forthcoming rigorous enforcement of the Excise Duty law, which mandates manufacturers of excisable goods to issue a bond or security.

In a webinar organized by the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce and PwC Ghana on Compliance for Businesses under the Excise Duty Act 2024, Mr. Anto highlighted the critical importance of compliance with the law.

“All manufacturers producing excisable goods are required to register under the Excise Duty law. This is the first point of compliance. The warehouse where you are keeping those excisable goods must also be registered and you should also provide a bond or security. The first two are rigorously being followed. It is the third part, which is the issuance of a bond or security that has been relaxed but discussions are ongoing to begin rigorously enforcing that too”, he mentioned

He explained that all manufacturers must register under the Excise Duty law as a fundamental requirement.

Additionally, they are required to ensure their warehouses storing excisable goods are registered, and provide a bond or security.

While the GRA has been diligent in enforcing the first two requirements, Mr. Anto noted that the enforcement regarding the issuance of bonds or security has been relaxed. However, discussions are underway to enforce this aspect rigorously. According to him, bonds play a crucial role in ensuring transparency in the production of excisable goods, determining the excise duty to be paid, and setting deadlines for payment.

Mr. Anto further emphasized that failure by manufacturers to enter into a bond or provide security will result in penalties, including paying double the amount of duty owed. He underscored the importance of manufacturers updating their bonds to reflect any changes in production levels, ensuring accurate revenue collection.

Excise duties, unlike general consumption taxes such as VAT, are specifically imposed on selected products like alcoholic beverages, tobacco, and sweetened beverages to discourage excessive consumption and address health concerns like non-communicable diseases. Mr. Anto highlighted recent amendments introducing hybrid duty rates for tobacco products and concessions for locally manufactured beers and malt drinks using local raw materials.

The compliance framework also addresses penalties for non-compliance, such as fines for failure to register or submit returns, and interest on late payments. Mr. Anto acknowledged challenges within the current excise tax regime, including inadequate tax education and inconsistent enforcement, proposing intensified education efforts and enhanced compliance enforcement as solutions.

Looking ahead, Mr. Daniel Nuer from the Ministry of Finance outlined the government’s intention to introduce more excise tax regimes to support economic expansion and growth, urging industry stakeholders to engage with tax authorities to shape future tax policies effectively.

The webinar concluded with discussions on various related topics, including tax stamp authentication, VAT and Excise Duty exemptions, and strategies to combat tax evasion and smuggling, underscoring the collective responsibility in ensuring compliance and safeguarding economic interests.

  • Bryan Acheampong must be appointed as CEO of SSNIT hotels if found competent – Abraham Koomson

Bryan Acheampong must be appointed as CEO of SSNIT hotels if found competent – Abraham Koomson

Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, Abraham Koomson, has strongly criticized the proposal to sell a 60% stake in four hotels owned by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to Rock City Hotel, owned by Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Newsfile, Mr Koomson suggested that rather than selling these profitable state assets to Mr Acheampong, the government should consider appointing him to manage the hotels if he is found competent.

“Why do you sell national assets? Why should we sell such hotels in these prime areas? For what? For how much?” he quizzed in anger.

“If Bryan Acheampong has the capacity to run and operate the SSNIT hotels, why don’t we employ him? Instead of selling the hotels to him, he should be appointed as CEO to run the hotels for us,” he said on Saturday.

Mr Koomson emphasized SSNIT’s financial stability, highlighting that the institution consistently receives contributions and does not face capital shortages.

“SSNIT can’t complain about money because every month they need not go anywhere to go and look for a loan or whatever, the inflow from the contributions just comes in. If you are an employer and you default payment, you’d be in trouble. So SSNIT cannot complain of capital,” he argued.

The labor leader stressed the ownership of SSNIT by workers, noting that the government does not contribute to the fund. He called for amendments to the National Pensions Act to safeguard workers’ assets.

In an earlier interview with Joy News, Mr Abraham Koomson accused the Trade Union Congress (TUC) leadership of neglecting members’ interests and expressed reluctance to join them in meeting President Akufo-Addo to discuss this issue and other labor concerns.

“I will not join them to meet the President because I suspect them,” he told Evans Mensah on PM Express.

Despite SSNIT’s denial of any impropriety, TUC maintained that the sale must be halted for broader consultations.

In May, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, MP for North Tongu, exposed the deal and raised concerns about SSNIT selling 60% of its stake in the hotels to a government minister.

Despite a petition to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) urging the president to halt the sale, the Ghana Federation of Labour alleges that SSNIT continues negotiations to sell its stake in Labadi Beach Hotel, La Palm Beach Hotel, Royal Ridge Hotel, and Busua Beach Hotel to Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel.

Alongside his petition to CHRAJ for an investigation into the transaction, Mr. Ablakwa led a protest against the sale, gathering various stakeholders to petition the presidency to intervene and prevent the sale.

Improving financial, digital literacy crucial for advancing financial inclusion – Angela Mensah-Poku

Chief Enterprises Business Officer at MTN Ghana,Angela Mensah-Poku, emphasized the importance of prioritizing financial and digital literacy within the financial inclusion ecosystem to foster industry growth.

Addressing stakeholders at MTN’s Business Executive Breakfast Series on the theme “Bridging the Credit Risk Gap for SMEs in Ghana,” Mensah-Poku stressed that while technology and innovation are essential drivers, financial and digital literacy serve as fundamental pillars.

She underscored that without adequate education in these areas, achieving financial wealth and bridging the financial inclusion gap remains a challenge.

“Financial Inclusion, technology is nothing when there is no education on financial and digital literacy. We will never be able to attain financial wealth,” she said.

Mensah-Poku called for consistent collaboration within the industry, leveraging technology to enhance transaction visibility, facilitate lending to suppliers, and create an inclusive ecosystem beneficial to all participants.

CEO of Mobile Money Limited, Shaibu Haruna, highlighted SMEs as pivotal to Ghana’s economy, noting MTN’s commitment to leveraging technology to assess credit risks and predict customer repayment capabilities.

He emphasized the success of microloan products based on customer transaction data and expressed optimism about tailored product offerings for SMEs.

“We are using our customer transaction data to predict their ability to pay and risks around default. The success story we have seen with our micro loan products is going to influence how we shape products for the future, and we are excited by the prospects of introducing products that address the specific needs of SMEs in Ghana.

“We can profile them for the levels of credit that we want to provide them in partnership with the banks or financial service providers and educate our customers constantly about the risks of financial transactions which are centered around social engineering,” he added.

Haruna further explained how digital footprints from merchant and agent transactions inform customer profiles, enabling strategic credit partnerships with banks and financial service providers. He stressed the importance of continuous customer education on transaction risks, particularly related to social engineering.

Kwame Anim-Somuah, CEO of A. S. Farms and a Poultry Farmer, shared insights into the unique credit needs of agricultural businesses. He highlighted technology’s role in showcasing these needs to financial institutions and advocated for tailored credit scoring methodologies that reflect the specificities of the agriculture sector.

Anim-Somuah emphasized the prolonged return cycles in agriculture compared to other industries and called for interest rates structured according to individual performance rather than generic scores.

In conclusion, the discussions underscored the critical role of financial and digital literacy in empowering SMEs, leveraging technology for credit assessment, and tailoring financial products to meet sector-specific needs, particularly in agriculture.

NPP National Executives meet to discuss Bawumia’s prospects for running mate

Per recent reports the National Executives within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are deliberating on the names of two influential individuals in the country as the party’s vice presidential candidate.

A journalist with Oman FM has indicated that Energy Minister Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) and a church elder are among those being considered for the role of running mate to the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

“I am at NPP’s headquarters at Asylum Down where the party’s National  executives have met and information reaching me is that Bawumia will be handing the name of his vice president to the executives after which the name shall be announced publicly. I have gathered that Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) and one elder’s name are under consideration. However I don’t know which elder exactly,” he added.

Once approved by the National Council, the submitted nominee’s name will be disclosed to the party.

Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, has assured that Bawumia will unveil his running mate by the end of July.

Speaking on Peace FM’s ‘Kokrokoo’ program on June 5, 2024, Mr Kodua stressed that the decision regarding the running mate would not be delayed beyond July.

“I have had conversations with a lot of people, and I have also spoken to Dr. Bawumia. One thing I am very clear in my mind about is that we nominated our running mate in August 2008, but that did not help us. This time, as we aim to ‘break the 8’, if that is to happen, certain things that did not help us in the past must not be repeated. We are optimistic Bawumia will present the name of his running mate to Steering Committee latest by June, the name will be given to NEC and then National Committee. So his running mate will be named before August,” he stated.

With approximately six months remaining until the December 7 general elections, Dr. Bawumia has yet to reveal his choice of running mate.

The competition for the NPP’s running mate position is heating up, with several prominent figures under consideration.

Among the potential candidates are Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, and Bryan Acheampong.

  • How agriculture contributes to climate change

How agriculture contributes to climate change

Agriculture plays a significant role in climate change through methane emissions from livestock digestion, nitrous oxide emissions from fertilizer use, and changes in land use such as deforestation for agricultural and urban expansion.

These activities release stored carbon, exacerbating global warming. In Ghana, these effects are pronounced, with forest reserves dwindling due to legal and illegal logging, urbanization, and agricultural expansion.

This has led to biodiversity loss and reduced carbon sinks crucial for climate regulation.

To address deforestation, the government has established the Forestry Commission and implemented policies for sustainable forest management.

Recently, the Department of Agriculture in the Northern Region highlighted government investments in agricultural infrastructure, irrigation schemes, and mechanization to enhance food security and productivity.

Initiatives like Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ) aim to improve farmer livelihoods and reduce import dependency. However, challenges persist, particularly illegal activities like logging and small-scale mining (“galamsey”), which undermine conservation efforts, contribute to biodiversity loss, soil erosion, and water pollution.

Ghana’s agriculture is increasingly vulnerable to climate change impacts such as erratic rainfall patterns and temperature extremes. To bolster resilience and food security, there is an urgent need to adopt climate-smart agricultural practices.

These include improved water management, agroforestry, and cultivating resilient crop varieties.

    The Ghana Green Project

In response to these challenges, the Ghana Green Project was launched to combat deforestation, promote afforestation, and enhance environmental sustainability nationwide.

The initiative has already planted over thirty thousand diverse tree species to restore degraded environments, increase forest cover, and preserve biodiversity.

Despite these efforts, effective implementation faces obstacles like resource constraints and governance issues. Achieving sustainable development goals and protecting cultural heritage in the face of climate change requires coordinated efforts from policymakers, citizens, and the private sector. Cultural heritage plays a vital role in building resilience and transmitting traditional knowledge for a sustainable future.

Individual Contributions to Climate Change Mitigation and Heritage Conservation

Individual actions are crucial in mitigating climate change and conserving cultural heritage. Adopting sustainable practices such as reducing energy consumption, using renewable energy sources, supporting local conservation projects, and advocating for heritage preservation policies can have a significant impact.

In conclusion, Ghana’s efforts to combat climate change and conserve its forests are pivotal for achieving sustainable development goals. Effective policies, strengthened enforcement against illegal activities, and collaboration with international organizations are essential to enhance resilience and mitigate climate impacts. Education, awareness-raising, and capacity-building on climate change adaptation and mitigation are also critical for sustainable environmental management in Ghana.

  • Ghana’s manufacturing sector needs much attention – Industry sector players to govt

Ghana’s manufacturing sector needs much attention – Industry sector players to govt

Stakeholders in the manufacturing space have indicated that despite the 6.8 growth rate recorded for the Industry in the first quarter of 2024, growth for the manufacturing sector is still slow.

Recent data from the Ghana Statistical Service shows that Industry sector growth was 6.8 percent compared to 3.3% recorded in Q1 2023.

The country’s gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to have increased by 4.7 percent in the first quarter of 2024, according to the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).

Compared to the fourth quarter (October to December 2023) last year, the economy grew by 1.2 percent.

This growth, according to the GSS, was driven by mining and quarrying, which contributed 12.9 percent, information and communication 17.9 percent, crops 4.3 percent, construction 8.2 percent, and accommodation and food service activities 9.4 percent.

Industry sector growth was 6.8 percent compared to the 3.3 percent recorded for Q1 2023.

However, players in the manufacturing sector insist the growth in the sector is still slow.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mark Badu-Aboagye, offers some perspective on why the manufacturing sector is not recording the expected growth.

He said, “It’s good that we have recorded growth in the industry sector, if you look at the subsectors that contributed to the growth, we realised that mining contributed about 12.9 percent and construction is about eight percent which is quite good, at least those sectors are doing well.”

“But my concern is the growth within the manufacturing sector. If you look at data from last year to this year, you will realise that the manufacturing sector is not going well as expected and this is a sector that we should put in all necessary efforts to ensure that they record an increase in growth regularly.”

The Accra Regional Chairman of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI), Tsonam Akpeloo, underscored the pressing necessity for the government to address cedi depreciation in order to foster accelerated growth within industries.

“If you do observe, you’ll realise that for some time most of our factories have been closing down or some actually have been relocating. There’s a news trend some of these big factories will rather close down their manufacturing plants and imports from their sister countries abroad and be selling in the market as though they were being manufactured here.”

  • Abeka Market food vendors flout violation of FDA permit rules

Abeka Market food vendors flout violation of FDA permit rules

A recent report indicates significant non-compliance with the Food and Drugs Authority’s (FDA) Street Food Vendor Permit directive at Abeka Market.

The FDA introduced the Street Food Vendor Permit to ensure street foods meet basic hygiene and safety standards, thereby enhancing consumer confidence and protecting public health. This permit, costing 5 cedis, is mandatory for all street food vendors nationwide. It includes training, registration, and licensing.

However, at Abeka Market, the majority of food vendors were found to be operating without the required permit, with only a minority claiming to possess it.

Alice Tetteh, a porridge seller, admitted ignorance of the requirement, stating,

“I don’t have one. I am not sure of what you are talking about. I don’t know I need to get one so if you have one to give me, I would be glad”.

“I have been engaging AMA on that. For the FDA permit, I do not have one. But my place is clean. So I don’t think it is a big issue”.

Sahadatu Mohammed, who sells Waakye, acknowledged engaging with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) but admitted not having the FDA permit. She defended her operation’s cleanliness but downplayed the permit’s importance.

Patrons interviewed expressed apathy towards checking vendors’ permits before purchasing food. One remarked,

“I have been eating here for years. I don’t have time to check the permit because I don’t care. The food is good and I know the place is clean so yeah”.

Another also stated, “I believe they have the permit. I have been a regular customer for 27 years”.

The Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Boniface Ashalley, acknowledged the challenges, noting ongoing efforts to educate vendors and enforce health standards.

He emphasized the municipality’s role in ensuring food safety amidst widespread ignorance.

“We have our staff who do one-on-one education. We have been doing screening for them to get the health permit. We are aware of some of these issues but we have been embarking on sensitization to get them informed. We also go round to monitor their place of work if it is clean and safe for people to buy from them” he stated.

Deputy CEO of the FDA, Roderick Daddey-Adjei, refuted claims by some vendors who alleged possession of permits not displayed at their stalls. He clarified that compliance involves visibly displaying a sticker with a QR code.

Daddey-Adjei expressed concern over vendor negligence and highlighted the FDA’s intensified education efforts, including direct outreach and multilingual campaigns.

He underscored the seriousness of non-compliance, stressing that operating without the Street Food Vendor Permit constitutes a criminal offense and offenders will face sanctions.

“We are all doing the same work so when there is the need to assist or let the food vendors know that apart from the health permit it is mandatory for them to get the street food vendor permit, we do” he added.

“It is not possible for the vendors to have the sticker and claim it is at home. It has a QR code and it is sticker which has to be pasted on their shop or wherever they are selling from. To see the one who has complied fully is the one with the health permit and also the street food vendor permit”.

In summary, while the FDA’s initiative aims to enhance street food safety and regulatory compliance, significant challenges persist at Abeka Market, necessitating continued enforcement and public awareness efforts.
