Keche Joshua, one-half of the renowned Ghanaian music duo Keche, has made headlines by declaring his openness to endorsing a political party in exchange for $10 million.

When questioned about whether his request was excessive, Keche Joshua pointed out that some influential figures have access to significant sums of money.

“If anyone comes and gives me 10 million dollars to endorse a political party, I will openly campaign for that political party. Even if the person says I should retire, I will do as he says,” he shared.

Wyllbee’s alleged girlfriend, Nana Yaa Nyarko, granted GHC100,000 bail

Nana Yaa Nyarko, the primary suspect in the Wyllbee murder case, has been granted bail by the Adum High Court. This follows an earlier denial of bail by the Akropong Circuit Court.

Nana Yaa, along with her legal team, had presented their case for bail at the Adum High Court on August 15, 2024.

The court decided in her favor, granting her bail with conditions.

Both Nana Yaa and the second accused have been released on bail of GH¢100,000 each, with the requirement of sureties.

The court’s decision was delivered in Nana Yaa’s absence due to safety concerns related to the large and angry crowd at the court.

Following the ruling, a representative of Wyllbee’s family expressed their frustration, acknowledging that while the family is unsettled, the legal process must be followed.

Nana Yaa is set to return to the Akropong Circuit Court on August 27, 2024, for further proceedings.

    Background:

Reports indicated that Wyllbee was killed in Abuakwa-Tanoso, Ashanti Region, while staying overnight at Nana Yaa Nyarko’s residence, a property reportedly owned by her ‘abroad-based’ husband’s family, who were unaware of Wyllbee’s presence.

According to initial accounts, on July 5, 2024, Wyllbee was seen urinating in the compound and was confronted by residents who suspected him of theft.

Wyllbee allegedly claimed he was visiting Nana Yaa, but she purportedly denied knowing him to protect her marriage from her in-laws.

This denial led to suspicion and accusations of theft among the neighbors, culminating in Wyllbee being lynched. Reports also mention that Wyllbee’s phone was destroyed with a stone during the incident.

Evaluate promises made by politicians, don’t vote blindly – Afua Pokua

Ghanaian media figure and journalist Afia Pokua, known as Vim Lady, has called on Ghanaians to be more discerning about the promises made by politicians.

Speaking on Peace FM, she stressed the need for voters to assess whether political proposals are realistic and financially feasible.

Vim Lady criticized the tendency of politicians to recycle outdated ideas without offering genuine innovation.

She noted the ongoing debate between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) regarding the Free Senior High School initiative.

The NDC has argued that this policy imposes a heavy financial burden and has called for its reassessment.

“The NDC is saying they would provide free tuition to all first-year L100 students of the public universities across the country. For me, this is a build-up of the free SHS policy. If the NPP had not introduced free SHS, the NDC would not have initiated this policy.

“We shouldn’t just be following slogans; we must question their policies. The NDC has been complaining bitterly about how free SHS has impacted negatively on Ghana’s economy, to the extent that the party has been calling for a review of the policy.”
Despite this, the NDC has proposed a new plan to offer free education to first-year university students if they come to power.

Vim Lady questioned the practicality of this plan given Ghana’s current economic situation, asking how the NDC intends to fund such an initiative.

She highlighted the importance of questioning the feasibility of political promises rather than accepting them without scrutiny.
“Yet today, the NDC wants to implement free tuition for all level 100 students; where are they going to get the money for? That is a valid question, and we must ask.”

Desist from blindly following politicians, political parties – Afia Pokua to Ghanaians

Ghanaian media personality and broadcast journalist Afia Pokua, popularly known as Vim Lady, has urged Ghanaians to critically evaluate the promises made by politicians rather than following them blindly.

On Peace FM, she highlighted the importance of questioning the viability and practicality of political promises and policies.

Vim Lady pointed out that politicians have been recycling old ideas without introducing innovative solutions.

She used the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) as examples.

The NDC has criticized the NPP’s Free Senior High School policy, claiming it places a significant financial strain on the country, and has called for a reassessment of the initiative.

Despite this, the NDC has proposed offering free education to first-year students at public universities if elected.

Vim Lady expressed skepticism about the feasibility of this plan, given the current economic challenges facing Ghana.

She questioned where the NDC would source the funds for such a policy, noting that the NDC’s criticism of the Free SHS program raises concerns about their ability to implement a similar initiative for tertiary education.

Vim Lady emphasized that citizens should not merely accept political slogans at face value but should scrutinize the financial and practical implications of proposed policies.

“Yet today, the NDC wants to implement free tuition for all level 100 students; where are they going to get the money for? That is a valid question, and we must ask.”

I’ve done so much for NPP but received nothing in return – Socrate Safo

Veteran film producer Socrate Safo has voiced his frustration over the neglect he feels from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), despite his active support and campaigning efforts.

His sentiments echo those of veteran musicians Nicholas Omane Acheampong and Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong, who have also expressed disappointment over their perceived lack of recognition from the party.

In a recent interview on Ash FM, Acheampong revealed that he has been a committed supporter of the NPP since 2008, even using four of his personal vehicles for the party’s campaign.

Despite these efforts, he feels his contributions have gone unnoticed, with no acknowledgment or compensation from the party.

Similarly, Isaiah Kwadwo Ampong has lamented the absence of recognition for his support of the NPP.

He noted that despite his contributions, he has received little to no appreciation from the party’s leadership.

‘Today. I cannot point to anything that has been done for me in return. I cannot go and demand any compensation from those in power. But none of them has remembered any of the sacrifices I’ve made; none of them have recognized the sacrifices many people, especially the creatives, have made for them,” he said in a radio interview.
During a panel discussion on Peace FM, Safo acknowledged the musicians’ grievances and admitted that he shares their frustrations.

He hinted that he has restrained himself from fully expressing his own dissatisfaction, implying that his grievances might be even more severe.

Safo emphasized that this issue isn’t unique to the NPP, suggesting that volunteers in other political parties across the country face similar neglect and lack of appreciation.

He highlighted the broader problem of how political parties in Ghana often fail to properly recognize and reward the efforts of their volunteers.

“The things I have to say are more than what the two musicians have already spoken about, but I have kept quiet. I am managing it, not because I am a party member. I understand what they are saying a hundred and one percent. If I am not able to control myself, the sort of things I will let out will be more than what they have put out… I am speaking for all; someone may be in the Butterfly Party [Movement for Change] and will be going through what we are currently experiencing. Someone may be in the PNC going through the same thing. The political parties treatment of some of the people who volunteer for the party is so bad and provokes anger. All political parties across the country don’t appreciate their volunteers and treat them well,” Socrate Safo said.

I stole cars and defrauded many people – Woman battling for her life confesses

Facing a 50/50 chance of survival after being diagnosed with stage three cancer, Yvonne, a Ghanaian woman residing in Germany, has chosen this difficult time to confess her past misdeeds. Now 39 years old, she is bedridden after undergoing a double mastectomy, but her resolve to come clean about her criminal past remains strong.

Yvonne revealed that she and her partner were deeply involved in illegal activities, including credit card and bank fraud, car theft, and trafficking stolen goods to Ghana.

Reflecting on how she was led astray, she shared, “I was financially independent and doing well on my own until I met a man who introduced me to a world of crime. I learned to manipulate banks, steal cars, and deceive people—all for the sake of money.”

She detailed how she would impersonate bank customers to gain access to their accounts, saying, “My partner provided me with detailed information about the victims, and I would call international banks pretending to be the account holders. With all the necessary details, the banks trusted me, and I was able to extract their financial information effortlessly.”

Their criminal activities extended to stealing cars, often from rental services, and shipping them to Ghana. “I would contact rental services to arrange for cars, which my partner would then ship back home,” Yvonne explained.

She also disclosed that her partner was involved in using black magic, or “juju,” to manipulate their victims further. “After conning people, he would use charms on them to keep them under his control,” she said, highlighting the extent of their criminal behavior.

Yvonne admitted that they targeted both black and white individuals, particularly those with wealth. Her partner, she claimed, had connections that allowed him to infiltrate prominent places, even mentioning Buckingham Palace.

Reflecting on her current condition, Yvonne believes that her suffering is a direct consequence of her past actions. “I think I’m being punished for all the harm I’ve caused. I lived a healthy lifestyle, but now I’m facing this illness. I feel it’s more than just physical—it’s spiritual,” she pondered.

She revealed that her partner abandoned her once she became ill, leaving her to face the consequences alone. Now, as she battles her illness, Yvonne is issuing a stern warning to young people. “Don’t let greed and the pursuit of money lead you down the wrong path. It cost me everything—my health, my relationships, and my peace. Choose love and genuine care over wealth that comes with strings attached.”

Her message is clear: the path she took led to nothing but pain and regret, and she hopes others will learn from her mistakes and avoid the same fate.

  • Aspire for gov’t positions to effect change – Okraku-Mantey to entertainment industry players

Mark Okraku-Mantey, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, has called on entertainment industry professionals to pursue government roles in order to drive positive change within the sector.

He believes that increased representation from the industry in government positions could lead to more effective advocacy and progress for the field.

Okraku-Mantey highlighted the impact of Dzifa Abla Gomashie, a former deputy minister and industry figure, as an example of how industry insiders can influence budgetary outcomes.

He recounted an instance where Gomashie, despite her political affiliation, supported an increase in the ministry’s budget due to her understanding of the sector’s needs.

“I went to parliament to defend the ministry’s budget, and when Dzifa Abla Gomashie entered, she said she wanted to sit by me. She sat by me, said she had been there before, and that the budget wouldn’t suffice, so they should add some to it. And the people were surprised—is that an NDC person?

“And she said it is the industry we are fighting for. So, she is NDC, but because we understood something that maybe the rest of them wouldn’t understand, NDC and NPP merged on the day, and we got some good results. And so, we need more people [creatives] to come on board,” he said in a report on myjoyonline.com.

Her intervention helped bridge partisan divides and achieved better funding for the ministry.

Addressing concerns that political involvement might lead to marginalization of industry professionals or loss of revenue, Okraku-Mantey dismissed such fears.

He shared his own experience of entering politics with Akufo-Addo’s candidacy, noting that before his and A Plus’s involvement, many in the creative community were reluctant to engage in politics.

“I never saw that. I became a politician through Akufo-Addo as a candidate. Note: Before A Plus and I started this agenda for Candidate Akufo-Addo, creative people were scared to show their faces for politics. Jewel Ackah was somehow a peripheral politician. He didn’t want to show his face; he only did music; he did business.”

He mentioned Jewel Ackah as an example of a creative who previously preferred to remain outside the political spotlight, focusing solely on his music and business endeavors.

    Mahama parries Kwadwo Sheldon

Former President John Dramani Mahama has refuted claims that questions at the NDC’s Town Hall Meeting at the Bukom Arena were prearranged.

The flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 general elections asserts that the event was conducted with genuine, spontaneous interaction.

He clarified, “I was my own panellist and moderator. People in the arena got up and asked me any type of question, from archaeology to zoology.”

His comments come after social media influencer Kwadwo Sheldon voiced on Twitter that he chose not to attend the meeting after an invitation from the opposition party because he believed the questions were predetermined to simplify responses for Mahama.

Sheldon felt that this setup was too contrived and did not align with his expectations.

In contrast, Mahama described the event as open and interactive, where attendees were free to ask questions on any topic.

John Mahama added that he is not scared to answer any type of question thrown at him, adding, “Because we speak the truth always, we are not afraid. Any question that is being asked, I answer it from my heart.”

Kwadwo Sheldon has publicly declared his support for the New Patriotic Party and his proud association.

Former President John Dramani Mahama has refuted claims that attendees at the NDC’s Town Hall Meeting at the Bukom Arena were given predetermined questions.

Kwadwo Sheldon had alleged on Twitter that the NDC invited him to the event but he declined, citing that attendees were provided with pre-set questions to facilitate easier responses for Mahama.
Sheldon expressed his reluctance to participate in what he described as a pre-planned question and answer session.

However, Mahama, in video excerpts from the event, clarified that attendees were free to ask their own questions on a wide range of topics.

He emphasized, “I was my own panelist and moderator. People in the arena got up and asked me any type of question, from archaeology to zoology.”

Mahama further asserted his confidence in addressing any question, stating, “Because we speak the truth always, we are not afraid. Any question that is being asked, I answer it from my heart.”

GTA projects $3bn in revenue from the ‘Beyond the Return’ programs for 2024

The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has set an ambitious goal to generate over $3 billion in revenue from its ‘Beyond the Return’ initiatives throughout 2024.

This follows the impressive results of the Year of Return in 2019, where Ghana saw approximately 1.9 billion cedis from over 900,000 visitors.

In a recent update to JoyNews from Parliament, Akwesi Agyemang, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Revenue Authority, revealed that Ghana expects to welcome at least 1.3 million tourists during the latter half of 2024.

The first half of the year has already attracted nearly 600,000 visitors, with the second half traditionally showing stronger performance, particularly the last quarter, which often surpasses the earlier months.

Agyemang expressed optimism about surpassing the revenue target, citing ongoing efforts to boost promotion in key markets, such as the U.K., which ranks third in visitor numbers behind Nigeria.

The total revenue projection has been raised to around $3.8 billion, with hopes that the private sector will seize the opportunities arising from this influx.

Additionally, significant upgrades are planned for major event venues, including the National Theatre, with renovations expected to be completed before December.

Recent improvements include new air conditioning units, addressing a previous concern.

The minister has directed the management to enhance the facilities further.

Meanwhile, progress on renovations at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) has stalled due to delays in obtaining necessary parliamentary approval.

Despite not being directly responsible, Agyemang emphasized the close collaboration with the venue’s management to ensure it meets high standards.

During their interaction, Rawlings expressed his curiosity about the song and laughed when he heard the lyrics.

“When we met, he asked if I was the songwriter behind ‘I Want to See You, My Father’ and mentioned he’d seen a video where I talked about him smoking.

We’ll provide a credible voter register – EC to NDC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has committed to a comprehensive voter exhibition process to ensure a reliable voter register for the December elections.

This pledge comes in response to the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s call for the immediate release of the provisional voter register ahead of the scheduled exhibition.

Dr. Boamah, the NDC’s Director of Elections, criticized the EC on Facebook, accusing them of delaying the release of the register due to incompetence and suggesting a deliberate effort to present a flawed register to political parties.

He expressed concern that this delay could potentially lead to significant unrest if not addressed promptly.

“deeply concerned that the posturing and incompetence of the EC and its IT Department can plunge Ghana into anarchy if not remedied immediately.”

In a counterstatement on Eyewitness News on Citi FM, Dr. Serebuor Quaicoe, the EC’s Director of Training, dismissed these allegations.

He urged the NDC and other stakeholders to be patient and participate in the exhibition process, which will address any issues and ensure a high-quality final register.

“Why would we fight the same people who are going to help us do the work? We all know the quantum of work to be done…So, they should understand it and once we give it to them, they and the voters and everybody will help to contribute and by the time we finish the eight-day exhibition, we will identify all the challenges and rectify them.

“They should all expect that when everything is done we will give them the final register. So, we will do good work and give them the final register which will be a quality register,” he stated.

Dr. Quaicoe emphasized the importance of collaboration, noting that the EC is committed to delivering a reliable final register after the eight-day exhibition period, which will allow for the correction of any identified problems.

Akufo-Addo is right, ‘Agyapadie’ book is complete falsehood – Kaakyire Kwame Appiah

Kaakyire Kwame Appiah, a prominent musician and chief, has urged Ghanaians to trust President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo‘s denial regarding the controversial book ‘Agyapadie’.

In an interview on Property FM in Cape Coast, Appiah emphasized that the President has firmly denied any connection to the book’s claims.

“I was watching the President address the Agyapadie issue on TV, and he clearly stated that the allegations are false. From the start, I believed the accusations were unfounded, and the President’s denial reinforces this,” he stated.

He called on people to dismiss the rumors about attempts to misappropriate state assets under the guise of Agyapadie.

Appiah warned that if such schemes are indeed happening, they would ultimately have negative consequences for everyone in the country.

“If some individuals are trying to monopolize the nation’s properties, the repercussions of their actions will impact us all. We must be vigilant to prevent any such misdirection that could harm the country,” he added during his conversation with host Amansan Krakye.

  • Supreme Court can’t be coerced into accepting homosexual rights – Justice Yonni Kulendi

Supreme Court can’t be coerced into accepting homosexual rights – Justice Yonni Kulendi

Justice Yonni Kulendi of the Supreme Court of Ghana has stated that the court will not be influenced by external pressures to adopt practices such as homosexuality, which are not in line with Ghanaian norms.

In his concurring opinion, he emphasized that Ghana’s Constitution holds supreme authority and is not subject to the influence of other nations’ laws or practices.

On July 24, 2024, the Supreme Court, led by Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, unanimously rejected a petition filed by law lecturer Dr. Obiri-Korang challenging the constitutionality of laws criminalizing homosexuality.

The seven-member panel, which included Justices Avril Lovelace-Johnson, Omoro Amadu Tanko, Ernest Gaewu, Yaw Darko Asare, and Agyei-Frimpong, upheld that Section 104(1)(D) of Act 29 is not discriminatory and does not infringe on individual privacy, whether for homosexuals or other sexual orientations involving unnatural carnal knowledge.

The court affirmed that the criminalization of unnatural carnal knowledge under Section 104(1)(b) of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) is consistent with the 1992 Constitution.

“Section 104(1)(D) of Act 29 is not discriminatory against homosexuals; neither does it infringe on the privacy of individuals, be they homosexuals or practitioners of other forms of sexual orientation which involve unnatural carnal knowledge however described.”

As a result, the panel dismissed Dr. Obiri-Korang’s lawsuit in its entirety.

“It is, therefore, not unconstitutional,” the panel said, and on that premise, dismissed the Plaintiff’s action in its entirety.

On February 28, 2024, Ghana’s Parliament unanimously passed the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2021.

The bill which is yet to be assented to by President Akufo-Addo to become law criminalises the mere identification as an LGBTQ+ community member and “related activities,” including same-sex relationships, the use of sex toys, and cross-dressing.

Presently, the content of the bill has not been made public as the President has been advised against receiving the bill from the Clerk of Parliament due to the legal action against the bill currently at the Supreme Court.

    Concurring Opinion

Justice Yonni Kulendi, a member of the panel, in his concurring opinion, said, “whilst the constitutions and laws of other nations may have expressly legalized homosexuality, glorified gay marriages, and by way of affirmative actions, promulgated legislation to propagate, outdoor, evangelize, preach, and sell the notions of homosexuality to every fabric of those societies, Ghana as a nation, and for that matter this (Supreme) Court, cannot by ‘peer pressure’ be cajoled into adopting a similar stance.”

“Our Constitution is sui generis and the only one of its kind. Thus, citizens who ply this Court must do more than merely cite and refer to the Constitution of other states as well as their case law to persuade us on what the law is or ought to be in Ghana.

“Our duty as judges and the oath that we swore before assuming office was not to uphold the laws of other nations or their case law.

“Our oath is to uphold the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Ghana. Thus, we shall neither engage in legislative drafting nor usurp the lawmaking powers of Parliament in order to substitute our wisdom for that of the lawmakers by superimposing foreign perceptions of propriety and/or normalcy on our laws and established social structures,” the Supreme Court judge said in a 57-page judgment released on August 13, 2024.

“We must, therefore, as judges, avoid any extent of judicial activism that will mislead us into assuming the role of Parliament,” Justice Kulendi stated while pointing to the case of Republic v Fast Track High Court, Accra; Ex parte Daniels [2003-2004] SCLR 364 at p.370.

    Conclusion

In his conclusion, he reiterated that, “in respect of the issue that was set down for determination in this suit, that Section 104(1) of Act 29, which criminalizes unnatural carnal knowledge, does not contravene the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.

“The Plaintiff’s conception of private morality as a ground to limit or expand the constitutional right to privacy lacks sufficient context in the nation’s constitutional architecture.

“Indeed, it is fundamentally poles apart from Ghanaian family values. Our constitutional provisions derive their purpose and values from our traditions, customs, and culture,” Justice Yonni Kulendi said while dismissing the action in its entirety.

    Relief Sought

Dr. Obiri-Korang, the Plaintiff, per his writ filed on August 26, 2024, specifically sought the following reliefs:

    a. A declaration that Section 104(1)(b) of the Criminal Offences Act (Act 29) 1960 is ultra vires Article 18(2) of the Constitution of Ghana in so far as the said section will lead to the unlawful and arbitrary interference of the privacy of all adult persons living in Ghana.

    b. A declaration that Section 104(1)(b) of the Criminal Offences Act of Ghana is ultra vires Article 17(2) of the Constitution of Ghana, in so far as the said section arbitrarily and unjustifiably discriminates against persons based on their sexual orientation.

    c. A declaration that Section 104(1)(b) of the Criminal Offences Act of Ghana is ultra vires Article 14(1) of the Constitution of Ghana, in so far as the said section arbitrarily deprives homosexuals of their liberty to select their intimate sexual partners and their right to engage in intimate sexual conduct without state interference.

  • Kwabena Kwabena did not gain from NPP’s endorsement – Manager

Kwabena Kwabena did not gain from NPP’s endorsement – Manager

Nana Poku Ashis, the manager of Ghanaian musician Kwabena Kwabena, has refuted recent remarks by Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku-Mantey.

The deputy minister had suggested that Kwabena Kwabena’s career received a significant boost after endorsing the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its leader, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Okraku-Mantey, in an interview with Joy FM on August 10, 2024, highlighted the potential benefits of political affiliations for artists, using Kwabena Kwabena as an example.

He claimed the singer’s endorsement of the NPP positively impacted his career.

However, in a conversation with GhanaWeb’s Isaac Dadzie on August 14, 2024, Ashis dismissed Okraku-Mantey’s claims as “vague,” challenging the deputy minister’s notion of what it means for an artist to become “bigger.”

He explained that while Kwabena Kwabena initially faced no setbacks after supporting the NPP in 2008, his career suffered following the party’s loss in the 2012 elections.

According to Ashis, the singer experienced backlash from fans, particularly those aligned with the opposition, which led to a decline in his popularity and support.

Despite enduring criticism and losing fans, Kwabena Kwabena continued to persevere without the anticipated backing from the NPP, even after their victory in the 2016 elections.

Ashis argued that Kwabena Kwabena’s growth as an artist was a result of his own hard work rather than any assistance from the NPP.

He expressed disappointment that Okraku-Mantey would attempt to take credit for the artist’s success, emphasizing that the endorsement was born out of genuine support for Akufo-Addo rather than financial motives.

Ashis also noted that any future engagements would be strictly business-oriented.

Currently, Kwabena Kwabena has distanced himself from politics and is focusing on his music career, promoting his latest song, “Fakye Me,” from his forthcoming gospel EP, “God of Restoration.”

Chidimma Adetshina, a 23-year-old pageant hopeful who recently withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition amidst a controversy over her nationality, has accepted an invitation to compete in Miss Universe Nigeria.

In a video shared on Instagram, Ms. Adetshina expressed her excitement about joining the prestigious Nigerian pageant, saying she looks forward to the opportunity.

Her withdrawal from Miss South Africa came after intense scrutiny over her eligibility, despite being a South African citizen.

Questions arose due to her father being Nigerian and her mother having Mozambican roots, leading to an investigation by South Africa’s Home Affairs department.

The department is still pursuing legal advice and considering charges related to possible identity fraud concerning her citizenship.

Miss Universe Nigeria reached out to Ms. Adetshina, emphasizing that her journey in pageantry is far from over and offering her a chance to represent Nigeria on the international stage.

It remains unclear if she holds Nigerian nationality.

Meanwhile, Mia le Roux was crowned Miss South Africa last Saturday, making history as the first deaf woman to win the title.

If Ms. Adetshina triumphs in Miss Universe Nigeria, she will compete against Ms. Le Roux at the Miss Universe pageant in November.

I was ‘pestered’ until I accepted ‘Beasts of No Nation’ role – Andrew Tandoh-Adote

Renowned stage actor and voiceover artist Andrew Tandoh-Adote recently shared the story behind his unexpected involvement in the hit Hollywood film Beasts of No Nation.

In an interview on GhanaWeb TV’s Talkertainment with Abrantepa, Tandoh-Adote revealed how, despite initially turning down the opportunity due to scheduling conflicts, he ultimately found himself on the film’s set.

In 2015, a Hollywood team came to Ghana to scout for local talent, and Tandoh-Adote, known for his work with Roverman Productions, was invited to audition.

Although he landed a role, he initially declined, as the production clashed with his commitments to a stage play already in rehearsals.

Despite his refusal, an acting coach from the film’s team persistently urged him to reconsider, emphasizing the importance of the opportunity for his career.

“Around the time we auditioned, there was no play that we were rehearsing for. But somehow, they kept shifting the dates. So when I auditioned and got the role, when I was informed that I had gotten the role, we were already hot in rehearsals for another play that we were going to do. So it became a bit of a difficult thing to manage. So what I told them was, I can’t do it. They should find someone else.

“One lady, one of the acting coaches who had come to help the kids, called me and tried to convince me to be part of the film and that it was important because it would be good on my resume. I said I didn’t know what a resume was. I didn’t care. She said it would go on my IMDb. I said I didn’t know what IMDb was. I didn’t care. She tried talking to me, but I said, I’m sorry, I can’t do it. She should find someone else,” he said.

However, Tandoh-Adote was unmoved by mentions of his IMDb profile or resume, which held little significance for him at the time.

To his surprise, the film’s director was insistent on having him in the movie.

This led to further discussions, and Tandoh-Adote eventually agreed after consulting with Uncle Ebo Whyte, the CEO of Roverman Productions.

“I got a call from the Ghanaians who worked with them; what have I smeared on my face? I said, what are they talking about? They said, ‘Oh, now the director himself has called that they should make sure I am in the film.’ So that means, they are not taking no for an answer. I finally said, ‘Okay.’ So I went to see my boss, Uncle Ebo Whyte, and we worked out something,” he added.

Reflecting on the experience, Tandoh-Adote noted that his role in the film was brief and did not offer substantial financial gain. Nonetheless, he valued the experience, despite its minimal screen time and modest remuneration.

“I thought it was weird because my appearance in the film didn’t last more than five minutes. Did it pay? No, it was a very small rule. I think the big money went to the big cast, but it was a very small role, and it was fine,” he said.

Okraku Mantey wasn’t wrong for saying Akufo-Addo made Kwabena Kwabena big – George Quaye

Ghanaian playwright and entertainment critic George Quaye has responded to Deputy Tourism Minister Mark Okraku-Mantey‘s recent claim that musician Kwabena Kwabena gained prominence after endorsing President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on Hitz FM on August 14, 2024, Quaye acknowledged that the minister’s observation might hold some truth, especially during a politically charged year.

Quaye defended Okraku-Mantey’s statement, suggesting that aligning with a high-profile figure like Akufo-Addo during his candidacy could indeed boost one’s public profile.

“There’s validity to what Honourable Mark Okraku-Mantey said, particularly in a political climate,” Quaye noted.

He highlighted that during Akufo-Addo’s campaign, there was a strong public yearning for change, which led many to endorse him. This kind of endorsement can result in a reciprocal boost in visibility for the endorser.

“If Akufo-Addo was a prominent candidate at the time, then it makes sense that Kwabena Kwabena’s endorsement would have helped elevate his status as well. The endorsement came at a time when people were eager for a new direction, and aligning with a popular candidate naturally brings added attention and favor,” Quaye explained.

Quaye pointed out that this dynamic benefits both politicians and celebrities, as endorsements can enhance the profiles of both parties involved.

Afrobeat hasn’t lost substance – Fuse ODG disagrees with Buju Banton

Ghanaian-British Afrobeat artist Fuse ODG has strongly disagreed with Buju Banton’s recent criticism of Afrobeat.

Buju Banton had expressed dissatisfaction with how Afrobeat has evolved, claiming it has strayed from its original intent to inspire positive change and address social issues, unlike the impactful music of Fela Kuti.

In response, Fuse ODG addressed these concerns in a video posted on X.

He admitted that not all contemporary Afrobeat tracks carry a strong message, but emphasized that many artists still create music with meaningful content.

He highlighted that Afrobeat remains a powerful, spiritually resonant genre that connects with African and African-descendant communities worldwide.

“I get where Buju is coming from because most afrobeat hits do not have the message in it, but that is not to say there are no afrobeat artiste with positive messages in their music. Afrobeat is so spiritual, and most often, we speak in our mother tongue to connect with Africans and people of African descent all across the globe.”

Fuse ODG underscored that Afrobeat plays a significant role in helping Africans and those of African descent embrace their identity and reconnect with their roots.

“This music is now allowing Africans to fall back, fall in love with themselves, and be proud to be Africans. It is allowing African-Americans to want to come back home. It’s allowing Afro-Caribbeans to come home and connect to their roots.”

Kwadwo Sheldon and Kalyjay battle it out over NPP, NDC alliance

Kwadwo Sheldon has confirmed his affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following recent online discussions and his decision to decline an invitation from the New Democratic Congress (NDC) for a Town Hall event.

This admission came after a blog labeled him as neutral in its coverage.

In a statement clarifying his position, Sheldon explained that his criticism of certain NPP policies does not negate his support for the party.

He emphasized, “Disagreeing with some of this government’s policies doesn’t mean I don’t back them.”

Conversely, Kalyjay, Sheldon’s rival on social media, faced increased scrutiny for his apparent NDC ties after participating in the Town Hall event and posing questions.

Kalyjay, who has been associated with the NDC since his involvement in the FixTheCountry movement, was criticized by some for allegedly agreeing to a pre-set line of questioning.

In response, Sheldon subtly criticized Kalyjay, who then retorted.

Sheldon revealed on social media, “They invited me to the Bukom event with the condition of providing me with questions for JDM. It seemed they weren’t interested in my own questions, so I opted to play FIFA instead.”

Kalyjay countered by highlighting that his invitation did not involve pre-set questions, sharing a screenshot of his invitation and correspondence with the NDC team to dispel the accusations.

The two have since engaged in a heated exchange online, each defending their position and questioning the other’s credibility.

  • Kwabena Kwabena’s career became more vibrant after endorsing NPP – Okraku Mantey claims

Mark Okraku Mantey, the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, recently addressed the concern that political affiliations might negatively impact the careers of creatives in Ghana.

In an interview with Joy FM on August 10, 2024, Okraku Mantey argued that some artists have actually benefited from their political endorsements.

He highlighted Kwabena Kwabena as a notable example, pointing out that the artist’s career flourished following his endorsement of Nana Akufo-Addo for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2020 elections.

Okraku Mantey noted that Kwabena Kwabena’s popularity grew significantly after his song ‘NPP Wo Soro,’ suggesting that artists can succeed despite their political affiliations if they manage their careers effectively.

“Kwabena Kwabena became a bigger artiste after ‘NPP Wo Soro’ [song]. Yea, Kwabena Kwabena became more popular after endorsing Candidate Akufo-Addo. So if you have your issues, don’t blame them on the political parties. If you manage yourself well and position yourself well as a brand, you will thrive,” he stated.

Okraku Mantey also shared his personal experience, stating that businesses he collaborated with prior to his political career are still interested in working with him in the future.

“I spoke with some companies I used to work with. They said when I am done with politics, they are ready to still do business with me,” he said.

He emphasized that maintaining a strong personal brand is crucial for enduring success.

Kwabena Kwabena, who first supported Akufo-Addo in 2008 with the campaign song ‘Number One,’ continued his political backing in subsequent elections. Despite his past involvement, Kwabena Kwabena has since distanced himself from politics, asserting in a TV3 interview that he now identifies solely as a Ghanaian. He is currently focused on his new song ‘Fakye Me,’ featuring Obaapa Christy, from his upcoming gospel EP ‘God of Restoration.’
