All crooked things are cooked in the presidency, corruption fight should begin there – Franklin Cudjoe

IMANI Africa President Franklin Cudjoe has urged a proactive approach in the fight against corruption, emphasizing the need to start at the highest levels of government.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Citi FM, Cudjoe criticized the reactive nature of the Office of the Special Prosecutor in Ghana, stating that it fails to address the underlying causes of corruption effectively.

During the interview with Selorm Adonoo, Cudjoe cited specific instances of corruption within the Presidency, including the Scholarship Secretariat scandal and questionable projects under the Ministry of Special Initiatives.

He argued that tackling corruption at its root, particularly within the Presidency, is essential to prevent further misuse of public funds and ensure transparency and accountability.

IMANI Africa’s stance underscores the importance of a comprehensive strategy that targets corruption from its origins rather than merely reacting to established cases.

“Charity begins at home, and so fighting corruption should start at the Presidency because that is where all the crooked things are cooked. Look at the Scholarship Secretariat scandal; is it not from there? This Ministry of Special Initiatives, was it not harboured at the Presidency, which led to all these dams that were constructed like dugouts and wasted money all over the place. Just take a cursory look at that office.

“So, even creating the Office of the Special Prosecutor was like battling after the facts were established, and people with deep pockets will fight you because they have made enough money to fight you through. We at IMANI say that fighting corruption and waste begins at the Presidency.”

Crybaby Martin Amidu, my condolences to anyone who has worked with this monster – A Plus fires

Politician Kwame Asare Obeng, popularly known as A Plus, has extended his condolences to those who have worked with former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu.

Media reports indicate that Amidu recently wrote to the President of Ghana, requesting the removal of current Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng.

The President has referred the petition to the Chief Justice to determine if there is a prima facie case.

Reacting to this development, A Plus expressed his disillusionment with Amidu, whom he once believed was committed to fighting corruption.

He now views Amidu as someone who uses his office to settle personal scores against his successors.

In a social media post, A Plus recounted his initial support for Amidu during his tenure as Attorney General, but highlighted his changing perspective after observing Amidu’s actions against successors Betty Mould-Iddrisu and Kissi Agyebeng.

A Plus wrote, “I was with the then vice president, John Dramani Mahama, at the castle the day Martin Amidu was sacked as attorney general. At the time, I believed his commitment to fighting corruption and upholding justice was crucial for our country’s progress.”

“However, with the benefit of hindsight and witnessing what he did to Betty Mould-Iddrisu, who succeeded him, and what he has done to Kissi Agyebeng, who also succeeded him as SP after this crybaby was removed for failing to apply common sense and running the OSP with emotions, hatred, pettiness, and a burning desire to waste taxpayer’s money on settling his personal scores, I have now come to understand clearly why he was sacked. My condolences to everyone who has spent an hour of their precious lives working with this monster.”

I’ve confidence in parliament to probe EOCO’s actions in alleged money laundering case involving Cecilia Dapaah – Kpebu

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has called on Parliament to investigate the Economic and Organised Crime Office’s (EOCO) handling of the alleged money laundering case involving former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah.

Kpebu, along with former Auditor-General Daniel Yao Domelevo and other prominent Ghanaians, has filed a petition requesting a bipartisan probe into EOCO’s conduct.

The petitioners argue that EOCO had sufficient grounds to investigate Dapaah, given her inconsistent explanations regarding the large sums of money found in her residence.

“For Kissi [Agyebeng] to have done this and then EOCO looks at it and says that I can’t make a head or tail of this when the evidence is there in plain sight, what is the income of Madam Dapaah to match this colossal sum of in her house? Then you are running around trying to throw dust into our eyes and that is why we want EOCO to be held.

“We will never forget that Madam Tiwaa has such a bad profile of protecting President Akufo-Addo and his appointees. That is how come there is only one conclusion that this one too she tossed the case just to protect President Akufo-Addo.”

“So we want Parliament to set up a bipartisan committee to investigate the circumstances surrounding how EOCO reneged on its statutory duties to investigate the money laundering allegations.”

EOCO, following advice from the Attorney-General, returned the case docket to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), claiming no grounds for investigation.

“Upon receipt of the docket, EOCO did not act timeously to seize the money that the OSP was returning to Madam Cecelia Dapaa as public stated by the OSP”.

Kpebu criticized EOCO’s Executive Director, COP Maame Tiwa Addo-Danquah, accusing her of protecting corrupt officials and failing to perform statutory duties.

The petition highlights concerns over EOCO’s failure to act promptly to secure the seized money and calls for a thorough parliamentary inquiry into the matter.

Akufo-Addo intentionally delaying external debt to handover to NDC – Ricketts-Hagan

Former Deputy Minister of Finance and Cape Coast South MP, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, has accused President Akufo-Addo’s administration of deliberately stalling on external debt payments to burden the next government, which he predicts will be led by the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

During a discussion on TV3’s Key Points on May 18, 2024, Ricketts-Hagan claimed that the government is intentionally prolonging debt negotiations to avoid immediate repayments, which would worsen the cedi’s depreciation.

He criticized the current debt relief negotiations, stating that the government aims to leave the issue for the NDC to resolve if they come to power.

Ricketts-Hagan argued that Ghana needs a fiscal space of up to five years to stabilize the economy and urged for a complete renegotiation of the country’s external debt rather than following the IMF’s current prescriptions, which he believes are insufficient.

“The problem of our currency now and of economy, is not about how much hair cut you get, but it is actually about how much space you get within the next three to five years. So, the proper solution is to renegotiate our debt by refinancing the whole international bond market and get a fresh start. A fresh loan that will give us a clean slate and structure a bond that will give us a three-year zero-coupon bond and start some amortisation that will be going up,” he explained.

Mr Ricketts-Hagan stressed that “What they have on the table, they have taken their barber shop there, going to do their usual hair cut which these guys are not buying. Because, these are seasoned negotiators. So, what they want to do is push this, hoping that NDC government will come to power, and they will push this on the lap of the NDC. Because when we come, we will have no choice but to negotiate that external debt. We will have to start paying one day.

MOF set to prepare a new bailout package for investors of the defunct Gold Coast Fund- Bawumia

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that the Ministry of Finance is preparing a new bailout package for investors of the defunct Gold Coast Fund.

During his tour of the Northern Region, Dr. Bawumia addressed a group of investors who have been seeking compensation for their losses since the fund’s closure.

He acknowledged the significant challenges they have faced in recovering their investments and announced the upcoming financial relief.

Previously, the Ministry of Finance had provided a bailout of 50,000 Ghana cedis per investor.

Dr. Bawumia’s announcement brings renewed hope to these investors, offering further assistance to alleviate their ongoing hardships.

“We would have lost so many jobs and for some of the securities like Gold Coast securities, these were investments that were made by people and not the banking sector.

“These are not banking deposits, these are investments made by people. And people basically make their own evaluations of the risks in investing in certain institutions.

“Sometimes when they make a lot of money, we don’t hear any complaints but when they lose monies, then we may hear some complaints. And I know that it’s not easy for a lot of people who have put provident funds and so on into these institutions.

“The Ministry of Finance came out with a bailout, and I think each repository that they gave was about 50 thousand Ghana cedis and I think that the ministry is preparing another bailout for them because we believe that they are going through a lot of hard times,“ he stated.

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia led the government delegation, praising Kumah as a friend and a significant loss.

Prominent attendees included Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, and other key NPP figures such as National Chairman Stephen Ntim and General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, who delivered the party’s tribute.

The footage depicted Wontumi extending his hand towards Kyerematen, who turned away to speak with someone else, resulting in an awkward encounter.

The tension between Alan and Wontumi traces back to the NPP presidential flagbearership contest, with Wontumi supporting Bawumia and publicly clashing with Alan.

Alan, who has since left the NPP and is running as an independent presidential candidate, had previously warned Wontumi to be respectful, leading to a strained relationship.

Fella Makafui underwent surgery post-pregnancy – Medikal

Rapper Medikal has disclosed that his wife, Fella Makafui, underwent cosmetic surgery to flatten her stomach after giving birth, contrary to claims that her figure was due to a slim tea product she endorses.

Initially opposed to the surgery, Medikal ultimately financed the procedure to support his wife’s happiness.

He detailed the experience on Snapchat, explaining that he suggested using brand ambassadors for the product’s promotion, preferring natural methods over surgery.

After the birth of their child, Fella expressed concerns about effectively marketing the product.

This difference of opinion led to a three-month communication gap between the couple. Medikal eventually agreed to fund the surgery out of love.

The first procedure took place in Nigeria, during which Fella fainted, causing him to lose contact with her temporarily.
“After our child’s birth, she expressed concerns about effectively marketing the product. Preferring natural methods, I was not supportive of the surgery and recommended leveraging influencers instead. However, she disagreed, leading to a communication gap between us for three months. Out of love, I eventually consented. The first surgery took place in Nigeria, which I funded. During the procedure, she fainted, and I lost contact with her.

“Later, she desired another surgery in Turkey. Despite my reservations, I supported her. My affection for her and my desire to see her content led me to finance the second surgery, including her stay and other expenses. The rationale behind Fella’s decision for a tummy tuck remained unclear to me,” he shared.

Later, Fella desired another surgery in Turkey.

Despite his continued reservations, Medikal financed this procedure as well, covering all related expenses to ensure her contentment, though he remained unclear about her reasons for opting for a tummy tuck.

Medikal has been active on social media recently, following an incident where he claimed his estranged wife called the police to their shared residence.

He attributed this to his request for Fella to ask her cousin, who had been living with them for two years, to leave the house.

Afrobeat artist Seun Kuti has shed light on his father Fela Anikulapo Kuti‘s unconventional mass wedding in 1978, where the Afrobeats pioneer married 27 women simultaneously.

During a ‘Fresh Off The Boat’ podcast appearance via Skype, Seun explained that Fela’s decision was a strategic move to defend his female dancers and band members, who were living with him, from media slander labeling them as “prostitutes.”

He said: “My father was under immense media propaganda. He was very scrutinized. Most of the attacks were directed at the women that were in his life; his female back-up singers, dancers. They all lived together with my dad but the media started calling them prostitutes.

“So, my dad, in order to preserve their honour and dignity, asked them if they would choose to be his brides so nobody would call them names anymore and they all agreed. That was how the marriage happened.”

He also disclosed that Fela’s biopic is already in the works.

My six-year-old relationship ended because my boyfriend said I was too educated – Woman

A young woman has opened up about the demise of her six-year relationship, attributing it to her dedication to pursuing higher education.

Reflecting on the beginnings of their romance during Junior High School (JHS), she fondly recounted dreams of marriage that they nurtured as teenage sweethearts, envisioning a future together post-studies.

However, as their paths diverged, with her commitment to academic growth leading her to university after completing a certificate course and securing employment, tensions arose within their relationship.

The turning point arrived when she expressed her intention to pursue a master’s degree, to which her partner responded with disapproval, citing a dislike for highly educated women.
“So, I was in a relationship for six years, that was my first love and we both had our dream of getting married because we were young then.

“I had completed JHS by then, so we decided to wait until marriage. But along the line, due to peer pressure and all that, we had sex, and we thought that the relationship would lead to marriage.

“So, after SHS, I had to do a normal certificate course before going to the university. After the course, I started to work, so he thought that all was done with my education, while he also went into trade.

“I went to the university, and during level 200, he asked, what is the plan now? So, I was saying that I would work for a while and pursue my masters and all that,” she said in the video shared on X (formerly Twitter.)

This disagreement escalated when he abruptly announced plans to marry someone else, leaving her heartbroken and questioning the compatibility of their aspirations.

“He just said, as for me, I don’t like a lady who is so educated. I just thought that it was a normal mere saying, but not knowing that it was not.

“One Sunday, I was just there, and he sent me a message: I want to get married. So, I said, then let me finish my school, then we get married. He said, no, I am getting married next week, so yes, that is how I got my heart broken.

“I just cried it off and pretended everything was okay. And then I continued with my studies,” she added.
Through tears and resilience, she continued her educational journey, sharing her story as a testament to the complexities of balancing personal ambitions with romantic relationships.

I sleep beside my open fridge – Keche Andrew on how he deals with ‘dumsor’

One half of the popular Ghanaian duo Keche, Keche Andrew, has revealed his unique strategy for dealing with the scorching heat during power outages, locally known as ‘dumsor.’

In an interview with Elsie Lamar on GhanaWeb’s Talkertainment, Andrew shared his secret to staying cool during night blackouts.

“Nowadays, the light goes off at night when one is asleep. You wake up from sleep abruptly and find out you’re sweating. You start to sweat even in your dreams,” he lamented, highlighting the discomfort caused by frequent power cuts.

To combat this, Andrew disclosed that he resorts to sleeping next to his refrigerator, with its door open, allowing the cool air to circulate and keep him cold.

“As for me, I sweat a lot. Also most of the time, I feel too lazy to go downstairs to refill the diesel and start the generator so I just find means to keep me cold a bit,” he explained.

Moreover, Andrew mentioned using his wife’s portable, rechargeable fans, often used for drying makeup, as an additional measure to beat the heat during ‘dumsor.’

“I’ve had to resort to rechargeable fans lately. And when those run out of power, I use the compact ones my wife uses for her makeup,” he added.

However, his coping mechanisms were not without criticism.

Andrew criticized the government’s handling of ‘dumsor,’ noting a lack of acknowledgment and effective measures to address the issue.

“Our former president owned up to the ‘dumsor’ issues during his term and gave us a schedule. But now, we face a government that won’t admit to the current state of affairs,” he remarked.

Expressing frustration over the politicization of societal issues, Andrew emphasized the need for citizens to voice concerns without fear of being labeled or associated with political affiliations.

“Our president once said we shouldn’t be mere spectators but should voice our concerns. Yet, in our country, when we speak up, we’re quickly labeled and boxed into political affiliations,” he pointed out.

In conclusion, Keche Andrew’s story sheds light on the challenges faced by Ghanaians during ‘dumsor’ and the innovative ways individuals are coping with the heat and discomfort caused by frequent power outages.

Amidu wants the Special Prosecutor removed because of these 6 reasons

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has taken a significant step by formally submitting a petition for the removal of Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng from office.

The petition, as mandated by law, has been forwarded to Chief Justice Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

The submission of the petition was confirmed by GhanaWeb, revealing that it was initiated by Agyebeng’s predecessor and vocal critic, Martin Amidu.

Reports indicate that Amidu’s grounds for seeking Agyebeng’s removal include procurement breaches and alleged abuse of office during Agyebeng’s tenure at the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

Accra-based TV3 has outlined six key allegations in the petition:

1.Accroachment of Authority: Amidu claims that Agyebeng overstepped his authority by appointing staff to the OSP without proper approval, allegedly encroaching on the president’s powers.

2.Inducement of Staff: The petition alleges that Agyebeng induced staff from other law enforcement agencies with promises of higher salaries and ranks, citing recruitment from agencies like EOCO and the Ghana Police Service.

3.Abuse of Citizens’ Rights: Amidu accuses the OSP under Agyebeng of abusing the rights of citizens through arrests and detentions in various cases.

4.Abuse of the Judiciary: Agyebeng’s criticism of judicial decisions regarding OSP cases is seen as abusive by Amidu, who claims it undermines the judiciary’s integrity.

5.Procurement Breaches: The petition highlights alleged procurement rule violations in the OSP’s office refurbishment and vehicle acquisitions.

6.Refusal to Comply with RTI Requests: Amidu alleges that the OSP did not fulfill multiple Right to Information requests, indicating a lack of transparency.

The Chief Justice has requested Agyebeng’s responses to these allegations to determine the next steps in the process.

This development underscores ongoing tensions within Ghana’s legal and law enforcement landscape.

The Head of Public Affairs at the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Awal Mohammed, declined to confirm the disbursement of GH¢177 million from the Controller and Accountant General’s office to the Ministry of Health for nursing trainee allowances.

During an appearance on TV3’s New Day, Mohammed refrained from providing a clear answer when questioned about the fund transfer. He stated, “I am not the Controller and Accountant General,” emphasizing his lack of direct involvement in the financial transactions.

This development follows Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s pledge to release GH¢177 million to the Health Ministry within 72 hours to cover trainee nurses’ allowances.

Dr. Bawumia made this commitment at an International Nurses Day event in Accra on May 14, 2024, responding to a query from a final-year trainee nurse during a youth engagement in the Bono East region.
“I wish to assure the nursing trainees that by Thursday this week, the Controller [And Accountant-General] is transferring an amount of GH¢177 million to the Ministry of Health to pay the trainee allowances,” Dr. Bawumia had stated.

Despite the Vice President’s assurance, Mohammed, also an NPP Communicator, could not provide an update on the funds’ release when pressed for details.

He reiterated that Dr. Bawumia had stated the money would be transferred on Thursday, May 16, but he couldn’t confirm its actual status.
He reiterated, “I don’t know that for a fact at the moment but what I’m telling you is that he [Dr. Bawumia] says the money will be transferred yesterday [Thursday, May 16].”

Peace FM’s Kwasi Aboagye files lawsuit against Afia Schwarzenegger over claims of impotence, defilement

Peace FM’s Entertainment Show presenter, Kwasi Aboagye, has given Afia Schwarzenegger a seven-day ultimatum to retract and apologize for derogatory remarks she made about him online.

Amid the ‘Medikal-MzGee’ controversy, Afia Schwarzenegger, during a live social media session with Shatta Wale, criticized certain media figures and directed a barrage of disparaging remarks towards Kwasi Aboagye.

She criticized the professionalism of some journalists, referencing MzGee’s interview with Medikal, and recounted a past experience with Aboagye, suggesting his inclination towards younger women.

In the same live broadcast, Afia Schwarzenegger also claimed that Kwasi Aboagye was not well-endowed and unable to satisfy her needs.

In response, Kwasi Aboagye’s legal representatives issued a formal letter demanding an apology for insinuating that Aboagye pursues underage girls and suffers from impotence.

Afia Schwarzenegger now faces a seven-day deadline to remove the contentious audiovisual content from the internet or risk a libel lawsuit.

“Our client takes notice that you have repeated outright falsehoods against him over a long period and are now seeking others, including Mr. Charles Nii Armah Mensah, to join you in spreading the same.

“Once again, he elects to ignore the bare insults but not the false claims of defiling unnamed minors, imputations of impotence, and infidelity to hurt his family.

“Your written retraction and apology, which must be delivered within 7 days from the date above, must be unequivocal, unconditional, and subject to prior approval of our client.

“Our client indeed regrets his brief encounter with you while unmarried over 20 years ago. But for the avoidance of doubt, he denies your allegations as completely false and malicious,” the statement read.

  • Urgent approval of $150 million loan from the World Bank unnecessary- Ato Forson to govt

Urgent approval of $150 million loan from the World Bank unnecessary- Ato Forson to govt

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has criticized President Akufo-Addo for the emergency parliamentary session convened at the behest of the Majority caucus on Friday, May 17.

He argued that there was no genuine emergency warranting the recall of Parliament to approve a $150 million loan from the World Bank.

In his address at the start of the parliamentary sitting, Dr. Forson, who previously served as Deputy Finance Minister, stated that the approval of the loan was unnecessary.

He highlighted that the government had already misused funds from the first phase of the loan that had been approved earlier.

Dr. Forson emphasized that the primary concern for the Akufo-Addo administration should be the alarming depreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi.

The Minority Leader pointed out that the rapid decline in the value of the local currency is causing severe economic challenges, including the collapse of businesses and rising unemployment.

The Minority Leader expressed his concern over the continuous devaluation of the Cedi, which he said is driving up the cost of goods and services across the country.

This, according to him, is putting immense pressure on ordinary Ghanaians and worsening their living conditions.

He urged the government to focus on stabilizing the Cedi rather than seeking additional loans for what he termed as consumption.

Dr. Forson stressed the need for the administration to prioritize economic stability and the well-being of its citizens.

The Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam lawmaker reiterated that addressing the free fall of the Cedi should be the government’s most urgent task.

He warned that failure to do so would continue to exacerbate economic hardships and undermine the nation’s financial health.

In conclusion, Dr. Forson called on the government to reassess its priorities and take decisive action to stabilize the economy, rather than accumulating more debt. He urged a shift in focus from borrowing to implementing policies that would strengthen the local currency and support sustainable economic growth.

“How is the approval of US$150 million loan an urgent issue, when US$200 million for phase one approved by this House has been misapplied and not accounted for?”

“How is it an urgent matter for Parliament to be summoned from recess to approve a US$150 million loan agreement at a time that this government is granting questionable US$450 million tax waiver?”

“Therefore, we want to make the point clear that there is no urgent matter before the House to warrant this recall.”

“Rt. Hon. Speaker, the urgent matter facing the people of Ghana, particularly businesses, traders and households is the free fall of the Cedi. This is a matter that concerns everyone. The depreciation of the Cedi should be an urgent issue for all of us,” he said.

  • Rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs physically assaults Cassie in 2016 surveillance video obtained by CNN

Rapper Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs physically assaults Cassie in 2016 surveillance video obtained by CNN

A 2016 surveillance video obtained exclusively by CNN shows Sean “Diddy” Combs grab, shove, drag, and kick his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura during an altercation that aligns with allegations made in a now-settled federal lawsuit filed by Ventura in November.

The footage, compiled from multiple camera angles dated March 5, 2016, appears to show the rapper, producer, and business mogul during an incident that, according to Ventura’s complaint, occurred at the now-closed InterContinental Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles. CNN verified the location based on publicly available photos of the former hotel’s interior.

In the video, Ventura exits a hotel room and walks to a bank of elevators. Combs, holding a towel around his waist, runs down a hall after Ventura.

He grabs her by the back of the neck and throws her to the floor. Still holding his towel closed with one hand, he then turns to kick her, the video shows.

As Ventura is on the ground, Combs retrieves a purse and suitcase from the floor near the elevators. He turns around and kicks Ventura again as she lies motionless on the floor.

About four seconds transpire between the two kicks, according to the video. He then briefly drags Ventura by her sweatshirt toward a room before walking away.

Ventura is then seen slowly standing up.

She gathers items from the floor and moves to pick up a phone on the hallway wall near the elevators. Combs, still in a towel and socks, returns. A mirror directly across from the security camera shows Combs appearing to shove Ventura.

Seconds later, he sits down on a chair, grabs an object off a table and forcefully throws it toward Ventura. Combs is seen walking away, then turns toward Ventura once again when an elevator door opens and someone appears to exit.

Ventura, who reached an undisclosed settlement with Combs, declined to comment on the video obtained by CNN.

    Ventura’s lawsuit

Combs and Ventura, a model and singer known for songs like “Me & U,” were in an off-and-on relationship from 2007 – 2018. The two were photographed together at the Los Angeles premiere of the film “A Perfect Match” on March 7, 2016.

According to Ventura’s complaint, which cited the altercation as occurring “around March 2016,” Combs became “extremely intoxicated and punched Ms. Ventura in the face, giving her a black eye.”

After Combs fell asleep, Ventura attempted to leave the hotel room, but he woke up and “followed her into the hallway of the hotel while yelling at her,” the complaint said.

“He grabbed at her, and then took glass vases in the hallway and threw them at her, causing glass to crash around them as she ran to the elevator to escape,” the complaint alleged.

After Ventura got in the elevator, her complaint states that she took a cab to her apartment.

“Upon realizing that her running away would cause Mr. Combs to be even angrier with her, and completely stuck in his vicious cycle of abuse, Ms. Ventura returned to the hotel with the intention of apologizing for running away from her abuser,” the complaint claims.
“When she returned, hotel security staff urged her to get back into a cab and go to her apartment, suggesting that they had seen the security footage showing Mr. Combs beating Ms. Ventura and throwing glass at her in the hotel hallway.”

The complaint alleges Combs paid the InterContinental Century City $50,000 for the hallway security footage, one of a number of allegations made in the November lawsuit in which Ventura claimed she was raped in 2018 and subjected to years of repeated physical and other abuses by Combs.

Ventura, who was formally signed to Combs’ label, claimed in her suit that he “exerted his power and influence” over her throughout the course of their professional and romantic relationship.

According to the complaint, she was 19 when they met and Combs was 37, and their business relationship lasted until 2019. It detailed claims that Combs was physically violent toward Ventura and forced her to engage in various sex acts with other men during that time.

Ben Brafman, an attorney for Combs, said in a statement to CNN on the day it was filed, “Mr. Combs vehemently denies these offensive and outrageous allegations.”

The suit was resolved the following day.

“A decision to settle a lawsuit, especially in 2023, is in no way an admission of wrongdoing,” Brafman told CNN in a statement at the time. “Mr. Combs‘ decision to settle the lawsuit does not in any way undermine his flat-out denial of the claims. He is happy they got to a mutual settlement and wishes Ms. Ventura the best.”

Details of the settlement were not disclosed.

    Ongoing legal issues

Since November, Combs has faced five other civil lawsuits accusing him of a range of sexual misconduct and other illegal activity. He has denied the allegations, and the cases remain active.

Authorities searched Combs’ homes in California and Florida in March as part of a federal investigation carried out by a Department of Homeland Security team that handles human trafficking crimes, according to a senior federal law enforcement official briefed on the investigation. The investigation stems from many of the same sexual assault allegations put forth in the civil lawsuits, according to a second law enforcement source familiar with the searches.

Aaron Dyer, an attorney for Combs, issued a statement at the time, calling the searches a “gross overuse of military-level force.”

“This unprecedented ambush – paired with an advanced, coordinated media presence – leads to a premature rush to judgment of Mr. Combs and is nothing more than a witch hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits,” he said. “There has been no finding of criminal or civil liability with any of these allegations. Mr. Combs is innocent and will continue to fight every single day to clear his name.”

Southampton secure a spot in the Championship playoff final

St. Mary’s Stadium buzzed with excitement on Friday evening as Southampton secured a place in the Championship playoff final with a convincing 3-1 victory over West Brom.

The Saints will now face Leeds United in the decisive battle for promotion.

Ghanaian winger Kamaldeen Sulemana watched from the bench as an unused substitute during this crucial match.

In contrast, English-born Ghanaian attacker Brandon Thomas-Asante entered the fray in the 64th minute, replacing Jed Wallace for West Brom.

After a stalemate in the first leg of the semi-final, Southampton took control early on, dominating possession and firing more shots on goal.

Their efforts paid off four minutes into the second half when Will Smallbone capitalized on a Gray Diangana error to score with a powerful finish.

Southampton’s offensive pressure continued, with Adam Armstrong playing a key role.

In the 78th minute, Armstrong’s shot slipped through Darnell Furlong’s legs and past Alex Palmer, doubling the Saints’ lead.

Armstrong then sealed the victory by converting a penalty in the 86th minute after Tom Fellows fouled Ryan Manning in the box. Cedric Kipre’s late header in stoppage time served only as a consolation for West Brom.

Kamaldeen Sulemana, who made 25 appearances this season with three assists, could play a vital role in the final against Leeds United, potentially boosting Southampton’s attack.

  • Consider reducing e-levy rate – Momo agents to gov’t

Consider reducing e-levy rate – Momo agents to gov’t

The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana has renewed its call for the government to review the rates of the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy).

Their concerns align with recent discussions on financial inclusion at the ongoing 3i Summit in Accra.

Introduced in 2022 to boost domestic revenue, the E-levy has been reduced from the initial 1.75 percent to 1.5 percent and subsequently to 1 percent following widespread criticism.

In an interview with Citi News, Evans Otumfuo, the General Secretary of the Mobile Money Agents Association, emphasized the need for a further review to enhance financial inclusion in Ghana.

“We are going to make a case for the government to really as a matter of urgency consider reducing the e-levy rate. Because once that is done, we believe that we are going to get more of the value, and so the e-levy should be either scrapped or finally reduced to the barest minimum,” he stated.

He cited data from the Bank of Ghana showing increased usage of mobile money platforms following the rate reductions, advocating for the E-levy to be either further reduced or scrapped entirely.

“We have always been advocating for conditions and policies that would encourage uptake of financial products and some of these policies. We believe if they are implemented, it will encourage the adoption of financial platforms and financial means of transactions.

“So, from the onset of e-levy, we strongly opposed the idea of placing a tax on mobile money with the idea that it is going to discourage the growth of the sector. Because there are a lot of consumers who may be shying away due to the cost applied on it.”

Otumfuo highlighted the association’s long-standing opposition to the E-levy, arguing that it discourages the adoption of mobile money services, thereby hindering sector growth.

He stressed that favorable policies are essential for encouraging the uptake of financial products and digital transactions.

Businesses under trying times following fall of cedi – CEO of Chamber of Commerce

The Cedi’s severe depreciation against major trading currencies is severely impacting businesses, according to Dr. Mark Badu-Aboagye, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Chamber of Commerce.

“This is certainly not a good time for businesses in Ghana due to the free fall of the cedi,” Dr. Badu-Aboagye stated during his appearance on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3 on Thursday, May 16.

The Cedi is experiencing a record-breaking weakening cycle, having failed to gain against the dollar in the past 22 trading sessions, the longest streak since Bloomberg began tracking the data in 1994. By 1 p.m. in London, the Cedi had weakened by 0.3%, trading at 13.9310 per dollar.

This year, the Cedi has slumped by 14%, only surpassed by currencies that have undergone devaluation, such as the Egyptian pound and Nigerian naira.

The decline has been exacerbated by a significant drop in cocoa earnings, with exports plummeting by nearly a third to $508 million in the first two months of the year due to adverse weather, disease, and fertilizer shortages.

Despite a temporary surplus in 2023, Ghana’s long-standing current account deficit is reemerging, posing further challenges for the Cedi, noted Gergely Urmossy, an emerging market strategist at Societe Generale.

Forecasts indicate the Cedi will breach its record low of 14.6174 per dollar by the third quarter, potentially ending the year at 15.98. FX forward pricing is calculated based on the spot rate and the interest rate differentials between the two currencies for the tenor of the forward.

Amid the currency’s poor performance, Kojo Yankah, a former Minister of State under the Rawlings administration, has urged the government to prioritize providing incentives for businesses to boost production rather than imposing additional taxes. Yankah argued that taxing businesses during this period of currency instability is suffocating the business community.

  • Full details of Martin Amidu’s petition to Akufo-Addo for removal of Kissi Agyebeng

Full details of Martin Amidu’s petition to Akufo-Addo for removal of Kissi Agyebeng

MARTIN AMIDU’S PETITION FOR THE REMOVAL OF THE SPECIAL PROSECUTOR FROM OFFICE

    1.0 The Petition

    1.Martin Amidu’s petition rests on 6 issues;
    2.Accroachment of Authority
3.Inducement of Staff from sister law enforcement agencies
4.Abuse of citizens’ rights through arrests and detention
    5.Abuse of the Judiciary
    6.Procurement breaches
7.Refusal to comply with RTI requests.
    8.1.1 Accroachment of Authority

Mr. Martin Amidu alleges it is the president who should have appointed staff of the OSP and not the Special Prosecutor. He alleges the SP accroached the powers of the president when he engaged the services of three directors when he did not have a board.

He pointed out in many words that he had mainly sought the secondment of staff to his Office with the approval of the President when he did not have a board. However, Mr. Kissi Agyebeng did not seek approval from the president.

1.2 Inducement of Staff from sister Law Enforcement Agencies

The former Special Prosecutor alleges that the current Special Prosecutor recruited staff from sister law enforcement agencies, particularly the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) and the Ghana Police Service by inducing them with higher salaries and higher ranks.

Mr Amidu attached resignation letters he officially obtained from EOCO (markd restricted) who are now working with the OSP. He also attached RTI requests he made to Ghana Police Service for names and ranks of officers who have resigned to join the OSP. Police did not provide official resignation letters but a write up.

1.3 Abuse of citizens’ rights through arrests and detention

Mr. Martin Amidu alleges that the OSP’s handling of cases involving Madam Cecila Dapaah, Prof. Frimpong Boateng, Col. Damoah and Joseph Adu Kyei (Customs Division of GRA) and Ms. Eunice Jacqueline Buah Asomah-Hinneh (Chief Executive of Labianca and a member of the Council of State) amounted to an abuse of the rights of these citizens through the arrests and detentions made by the OSP.

Mr. Amidu attached the entire court documents filed at the High Court from start to finish of the Cecilia Dapaah’s case to his petition as exhibit.

    1.4 Abuse of the Judiciary

In a media briefing in November 2023, the Special Prosecutor told the press that there appeared to be a developing trend of rather regressive and dismissal judicial decisions involving OSP cases. The OSP provided four examples of rulings by the Court that appeared to ignore the law, or reason, or both.

Mr. Martin Amidu alleges that this “criticism” is tantamount to abuse of the Judiciary. He attached an article he wrote on 3 December 2023 criticising the SP as evidence of judicial abuse.

    1.5 Procurement Breaches

The former Special Prosecutor alleges that the OSP had breached Procurement rules in its refurbishment of the new office complex and procurement of vehicles. The only exhibit he attached is an RTI request to Public Procurement Authority for documentations covering such transactions. PPA denied request for the information on the basis that they are not OSP.

1.6 Refusal to comply with RTI Requests

Mr. Martin Amidu also alleges that the OSP did not grant him information with several Right to Information requests made by him. Mr. Amidu requested that the OSP to provide him with the appointment letters and salary details of all OSP staff on a pen drive. And details on the specialised vehicles by the OSP.

  • Minority kicks against gov’t’s call to halt cement price hikes

Minority kicks against gov’t’s call to halt cement price hikes

The Minority in Parliament has dismissed the government’s directive to halt the increase in cement prices, calling it unrealistic and unlawful.

This follows Trade and Industry Minister K.T. Hammond‘s instruction to cement manufacturers to halt price increases and publish retail prices to prevent arbitrary hikes.

The Minority argues that this approach is misguided and will not yield the desired results.

During a media engagement, Yusif Sulemana, Ranking Member of the Trade and Industry Committee, argued that the directive is infeasible without addressing root causes.

Mr. Sulemana highlighted that cement manufacturers are already burdened with levies, including a fumigation levy, despite not receiving the corresponding service.

He emphasized the need for government engagement with manufacturers to identify areas where taxes can be reduced and stimulus packages offered to support their business.

“As we speak to you, cement manufacturers pay a levy on fumigation, fumigation levy but when their goods arrive, nobody fumigates it’s they pay for a service they do not benefit. And then you come to tell me to reduce the prices of my commodity,

“I’ve never seen it anywhere. This is a competitive market, engage them and see where there’s a need that you the government can reduce some taxes. Where there’s a need for you to do certain things that will stimulate their business.”

“You don’t sit in your office and issue a directive saying that they should reduce their prices. I can tell you on authority that this is not going anywhere. What law is he referring to? Is there any law that says a minister can sit in his office and issue a letter that reduces the prices of commodities?

“It is only under this government we are seeing this. What we need to do is to sit with them and identify the root cause.”

The duo, who wowed the judges with their electrifying performance last week, are riding a wave of support and enthusiasm after their stunning display of Azonto moves.

Backlash I received from my ‘Papa No’ hit song forced me to go into ‘hiding’- Barima Sidney

Hiplife star Barima Sidney, known for his hits like ‘Tinana’ and ‘Papa No,’ recently opened up about his hiatus from music and the challenges he faced.

In a candid interview on Joy Prime’s Prime Morning show, Sidney shared how harsh criticism and personal struggles led him to take a break from the music scene for several years.

The catalyst for his departure was the controversy surrounding his song ‘Papa No,’ which was misconstrued during Ghana’s 2020 elections.

The backlash he received took a toll on him, prompting him to step back and reflect.

“At a point, I was heartbroken when the ‘Papa No’ thing came up. The lashing was too much, and I remember somebody saying I wait for things to trend so I can use them for songs. And I was like, do you think it’s easy for you to compose a song instantly? No, it makes you very creative instead, but then people took it some other way around. So, I decided to be quiet,” he recounted.

Sidney revealed that the criticism was particularly hurtful as it questioned his creativity and intentions as an artist.

Managing himself without proper guidance also contributed to his difficulties, leading him to perform at events for free and neglecting his financial well-being.

It was only after a conversation with fellow artist Shatta Wale that Sidney realized the importance of valuing his work and not underselling himself.
“Shatta told me something one time when we met. He’s my unofficial finance manager. He gave me advice a couple of years ago, and I think it happened. We were doing shows for free because of ‘paddy paddy’; we were following the love. So, shows that we were supposed to charge money, but we don’t do it because we feel like their friends, and that was when Shatta told me to collect the money. Truly, it got to the point where, when I needed help from them, they said no. Then I realised Shatta was right.”

Now, Sidney has made a comeback with a new single titled ‘BBF,’ featuring rapper King Paluta.

He expressed his determination to stay away from politically charged songs and controversial topics, focusing instead on positivity and personal growth.

His message to fans and fellow artists is one of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. Sidney’s journey serves as a reminder to never give up and to use challenges as opportunities for self-improvement and renewal.

EC transferred 1,082 voters to the Okaikwei South constituency on January 4, 2023 – Reports

A journalist from Original TV has claimed that in 2023, the Electoral Commission (EC) secretly transferred voters to the Okaikwei South Constituency without adhering to constitutional guidelines.

The journalist emphasized that any voter transfers by the EC should be publicly disclosed, not conducted discreetly.

“I want to ask the EC why they secretly transferred 1,082 voters to the Okaikwei South constituency. This was done unconstitutionally and is wrong. The EC is supposed to make public any such transfers,” the journalist stated.

It is unfavorable for gov’t to tax content creators- Kwadwo Sheldon

Popular YouTuber Kwadwo Sheldon voiced concerns about the government’s decision to tax content creators in Ghana.

Sheldon highlighted that taxing creators in the budding creative economy could stifle growth and deter innovation.

According to Sheldon, Ghanaian content creators face significant challenges in monetizing their content across various platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and others.

Despite the growing presence of social media platforms, Sheldon emphasized that only YouTube reliably generates income for creators, albeit not always at the expected levels.

During an interview with BBC’s Daniel Dadzie, Sheldon criticized the taxation system, stating, “Even before YouTube earnings arrive, deductions are made by the platform and the US government. If you earn $1,000, you might only take home $500.”

“We are building, it’s not buoyant yet. So if you keep taxing us, how much are we going to earn at the end of the day? Also, I am in a space and when you go to Social Blade, you see the average earnings of every creator. Not every content creator you see getting views on Facebook is breaking bread or is breaking even,” he explained.

Sheldon pointed out that creators already contribute indirectly to tax revenues through VAT and other levies on brand deals and collaborations.

He suggested that instead of burdening creators further, the government should focus on reducing expenditure.

Drawing comparisons with neighboring countries like Nigeria and Kenya, where governments have facilitated opportunities for content creators to earn more, Sheldon urged Ghanaian authorities to engage with social media platforms directly.

He argued that such collaborations would boost creators’ earnings, subsequently increasing tax revenues without overly burdening creators in their early stages of growth.

“When you go to Nigeria recently, their government talked with the owners of Facebook to open up for their content creators to make money. Kenya, they did the same. What has our government done?

“How much are you going to earn from the content creators that you want to tax that badly? How much? Tell me. Even the E-Levy that they introduced, they came to tell us that the money that they expected to make from, they didn’t make it,” Kwadwo Sheldon added.

The conversation arises in the context of the Ghana Revenue Authority’s (GRA) recent decision to include influencers, bloggers, and content creators in its tax collection base, citing income tax laws that apply to all earners.

Sheldon’s advocacy underscores broader discussions about balancing taxation policies with fostering economic growth, particularly in emerging sectors like digital content creation.
