An inclined plane is a simple machine with no moving parts.

It is simply an even-sloping surface.

It makes it easier to move objects to higher or lower surfaces than if we lifted the objects directly upwards.

It is believed that ancient Egyptians used inclined planes to carry heavy stones to build pyramids.

‘Inclined’ means a raised end or raised at one end.

An inclined plane may be a constructed frame or just a piece of log leaning against a higher point. An inclined plane is also called a ramp.

Although 2024 started with enthusiasm, the first month is not even over, and I have been broken into pieces by this tragic news. How can one lose their life while bringing another into the world? So many ‘WHY’ and questions I cannot comprehend. The world becomes truly frightening when you can be here with each other one moment and gone the next. The thought of never seeing my sister again continues to break my heart, and I am still in DENIAL. May God keep you safe wherever you are and forgive all your sins. I LOVE YOU MAMA 😭😭😭💔💔💔 Regina Affum.”

  • Churches are focusing too much on entertainment; we need to reevaluate their purpose –  Eastwood Anaba

Churches are focusing too much on entertainment; we need to reevaluate their purpose –  Eastwood Anaba

Reverend Eastwood Anaba, the founder of Eastwood Anaba Ministries, voiced concerns in a recently leaked YouTube video on the pervasive focus on entertainment in churches, asserting that it compromises the fundamental intent of worship.

Reverend Anaba highlights the dependency on musical elements and performances in churches, stating, “If you take away all the music and entertainment, many of our churches will die. The entertainment in our churches is sometimes too much, overshadowing the true essence of worship.”

He criticises the trend of extended musical sessions during conventions, where pastors are invited to speak, emphasising the need for a shift in focus from entertainment to the spiritual needs of congregants.

Drawing comparisons with other establishments like kiosks, mosques, lorry stations, and chop bars, Reverend Anaba underscores the clear purpose each serves without compromising its core function.

He questions why churches, unlike “chop bars,” often prioritise entertainment over their primary purpose of spiritual guidance and healing.

Reverend Anaba advocates for a return to the fundamental purpose of the church, emphasising healing and salvation over mere entertainment.

He challenges pastors to prioritise addressing the spiritual needs of their congregants rather than delivering captivating sermons solely for the purpose of offering collection.

While the exact date of the sermon remains unclear, there is speculation that the video may spark a debate leading to potential reforms within the church’s practices.

Some argue that music and entertainment play a crucial role in psychological and spiritual healing, adding complexity to the ongoing discussion about the balance between entertainment and the core mission of churches.

Pitch invader chases referee after he awarded penalty in Port Vale-Portsmouth match

This incident occurred shortly after referee Craig Hicks awarded a penalty to Portsmouth, which Colby Bishop successfully converted, securing a 1-0 victory for the away team.

Attempting to escape the situation, Hicks moved towards the tunnel at Port Vale’s Vale Park Stadium. The fan, however, was restrained by head coach Andy Crosby and other staff near the technical area and substitutes’ benches. Eventually, the disruptive fan was removed from the pitch, allowing the League One fixture to resume.

“Port Vale Football Club condemn the actions of the individual who entered the field of play during today’s match against Portsmouth,” the club said in a statement.

“We will work with the relevant authorities to ensure the matter and the individual is dealt with a zero tolerance approach.

“We remind all supporters that entering the field of play is a criminal offence.”

There is nothing attractive about being an MP – Joseph Osei-Owusu

Member of Parliament for Bekwai, Joseph Osei-Owusu, refuted the myth that parliamentary jobs come with better pay, saying that being an MP is “the least attractive of all opportunities” for politicians in a recent interview with TV3.

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Osei-Owusu, highlighted the myth regarding financial gains and clarified the difficulties experienced by legislators.

During the NPP primaries on Saturday, January 27, Osei-Owusu shared his personal experience, noting that the public perception of lucrative Member of Parliament (MP) salaries does not align with the reality of the job.

Despite the challenges, he urged current MPs not to discourage aspiring politicians, emphasising the importance of leadership and encouragement.

The Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Aning-Bosompem, also featured in the news, expressing his commitment to maintaining his position and participating in the NPP parliamentary primaries.

‘Confess’ – Sista Afia’s manager rebukes Fancy Gadam

Ex-manager of Ghanaian artist Sista Afia, Emmanuel Arhin has come forward with claims that Fancy Gadam demanded 50,000 cedis to headline the ‘Solomon Concert’ in Tamale but backed out despite an agreement.

The former manager suggests intentional sabotage and urges Fancy Gadam to settle the dispute with Sista Afia, emphasizing the need for mutual support in the music industry.

Ghanaian musician, Fancy Gadam revealed the agreement with Sista Afia was reached only one week to the scheduled event.

“Sista Afia didn’t approach us. Someone called and said he wanted to do a show with me and her. We charged GH¢100,000. Then she called herself, wanting me to help her, so I took GH¢50,000 per artiste-to-artiste agreement, meaning half of the initial fee” Fancy Gadam stated on Tamale radio.

Fancy Gadam said apart from the payment, he also had issues about the timing of the event.

Arhin accuses Fancy Gadam of unprofessionalism, citing management silence and conflicting statements about his performance fee.

    See below statement:

“Why Fancy Gadam for lie? Charley it’s show biz we understand but coming out to publicly lie that’s total rubbish. Sake of you people, we had to push the show like 3 months ahead. Unnecessary excuse, you asked for 50k. We agreed to pay yet your management decided not to even pick up our calls to confirm final dealings.

“I understand the competition and the planned sabotage. IF it was indeed 1 week why did you tell Carlos you wanted to pull through 3 days before the event…after delaying us for weeks before we could finally release an official artwork because for commercial reasons

“The lies too plenty Fancy, the other interview you said you charged 100k, today it’s 50k. Total Unprofessionalism on the side of your management at least with the dealings I personally witnessed, and it’s no big deal if you couldn’t pull through for someone you call a sister, just settle this with her you’ll both need each other in the future.”

In an interview on the Urban Blend Show on 3FM, Shasha Marley narrated his encounter with TB Joshua and how he gave him anointing water that cured his heart condition.

He said he had done a chest X-ray that showed that the left side of his heart was enlarged and the doctor had asked him to come back for an Echo test.

“I had had a chest x-ray. That proved that the left side of my heart was enlarged and the doctor has asked me to come back in a month. And in two weeks, I met TB Joshua. He gave me his anointing water. He said, ‘take this for your heart,’” he narrated.

However, before he could do that, he met TB Joshua who gave him anointing water and told him to take it for his heart.

He added that he went back to the hospital two weeks later to do the echo test and the doctor declared that his heart was normal.

“I went down to the hospital again and this Cuban doctor was highly confused. She said that through her years of practice, she’d never seen this before. My heart is normal,” he said.

Shasha Marley claimed that it was the anointing water from TB Joshua that had healed him and he thanked God for his miracle, saying he felt energetic and healthy ever since.

Kwabre East Opoku Agyemang Bonsu allegedly gives delegates GH¢1,500

The Kwabre East constituency’s Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Opoku Agyemang Bonsu, is currently being investigated for possible vote-buying in an unexpected development that occurred during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primaries.

It is reported that he guaranteed GH¢1,500 to every delegate in exchange for their votes.

The caption accompanying the incident reads: “NPP Primary Scandal: Opoku Agyemang Bonsu Accused of Offering GH¢1,500 to Delegates in Kwabre East Constituency.”

Opoku Agyemang Bonsu is currently engaged in a tight competition with fellow aspirants George Oppong, Patrick Amoako Kufuor, and Onyina-Acheampong Akwasi Gyamfi for the parliamentary seat.

The emergence of these allegations adds a controversial layer to the ongoing primaries in Kwabre East.

The controversy highlights the tension surrounding campaign practices and adherence to party guidelines.

Out of the total number of 373 aspirants, who filed to contest the primaries, after vetting, 29 are going unopposed, 11 were disqualified, two were referred to the National Executive Committee (NEC), two stepped down, one incomplete form and two did not show up for vetting leaving the qualified aspirants for the primaries at 326.

Member of parliament representing Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, Sarah Adwoa Safo showed compassion by providing breakfast hampers to senior delegates taking part in the 2024 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary primary.

At the Atomic Down Park voting place, the sitting member of parliament and her staff fed the delegates rice porridge and bread to make sure they were full before they cast their votes.

The heartwarming gesture gained widespread attention on social media platforms, with photos and videos of the breakfast distribution going viral.

As the NPP parliamentary primary commenced nationwide on Saturday, January 27, Sarah Adwoa Safo, who is seeking re-election, aimed to connect with her constituency ahead of the upcoming 2024 general election.

While some online reactions expressed appreciation for the MP’s thoughtful act, others voiced scepticism and diverse opinions.

Critics raised concerns about the transparency of the food distribution, while supporters lauded Safo’s efforts to connect with and win over the delegates through this compassionate gesture.

This election pits her against a formidable opponent, Michael Oquaye Jnr, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, who narrowly lost to her in the 2020 contest.

Adding a new dimension to the competition is Sheela Oppong Sakyi, a legal practitioner and strategist at the Office of the First Lady, introducing fresh dynamics to an already intense race for the Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat.

NPP Primaries: Moses Abor vows to beat Henry Quartey with 70%

The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth organizer Moses Abor for Greater Accra, has shown unshakeable faith in his ability to defeat Greater Accra Regional Minister Henry Quartey by receiving 70% of the vote in the Ayawaso Central primary.

After casting his ballot, Abor conveyed his optimism to Citi News, asserting that the winds of victory were favourably blowing in his direction.

He anticipates a triumph that will be officially declared within hours.

“The delegates will speak by the grace of God, and you can see from the weather that I am going to come out with victory,” Abor affirmed.

Refuting allegations of ballot box stuffing plans by his team, Abor dismissed such claims as mere propaganda associated with losing an election. He asserted, “When you are losing an election, you come out with propaganda, but by the grace of God, we will win.”

Earlier, Moses Abor had filed a petition with the Inspector General of Police, alleging that the incumbent MP, Henry Quartey, was orchestrating plans to manipulate the poll by employing unauthorized security personnel.

Former Tema East MP, Titus Glover, has confidently predicted victory for the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, in the upcoming Ayawaso Central parliamentary poll in the ongoing New Patriotic Party parliamentary primaries.

Mr Glover praised Mr Quartey for his dedicated efforts and expressed confidence that his hard work would be duly recognized with success in the election.

“He is working so hard for the government and the constituency, and I see nothing wrong with supporting him to win. Henry Quartey will win; even if it is one vote, he has won. Remember, I went to Parliament with three votes and that record has not been broken.”

  • IMF urges strict borrowing limits and timely debt payments in Ghana

IMF urges strict borrowing limits and timely debt payments in Ghana

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has urged Ghana’s government to impose stringent regulations on non-concessional borrowing and guarantee timely debt repayments in its 2023 Article IV Consultation.

The Fund highlights that after external debt restructuring is finished, the authorities must develop and make public a medium-term debt management plan as well as an annual borrowing plan.

Despite expressing concerns, the IMF acknowledges that Ghana’s program remains on track, with all indicative targets achieved.

The report highlights the government’s commitment to fiscal objectives, indicating readiness to implement contingency measures, such as advancing revenue-side measures in case of unexpected underperformance.

On the spending front, the IMF notes the possibility of reducing budget allocations for Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) during the year if necessary.

The Fund applauds Ghana’s progress, asserting that the country is on course to decrease the fiscal primary deficit by about 4 percentage points of Gross Domestic Product in 2023, in line with commitments under the Fund-supported program.

The staff report underscores Ghana’s adherence to program limits on spending and meeting non-oil revenue mobilisation targets.

While praising the government’s macroeconomic policy shifts, debt restructuring efforts, and broad reforms, the IMF warns of potential downside risks, including execution setbacks, delays in debt restructuring, and external environmental deterioration.

The IMF concludes by asserting that sound policies and ongoing reforms should stimulate recovery and further reduce inflation over the medium term.

President Akufo-Addo highlights Tema Oil Refinery revitalization at Sentuo Oil Refinery Inauguration

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo spotlighted the ongoing efforts to fully rejuvenate the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) during the inauguration ceremony of the Sentuo Oil Refinery, a Chinese-owned facility in Tema.

President Akufo-Addo stressed the potential benefits of having both the Tema Oil Refinery and the Sentuo Oil Refinery operating at full capacity, emphasising Ghana’s ability to locally refine a significant portion of its oil, thus reducing reliance on imported refined products.

Energy Minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO) used the occasion to extend an invitation to foreign investors, urging their active participation in the energy sector to enhance productivity.

Dr. NAPO commended the Sentuo Group for its substantial investment in the Santuo Oil Refinery.

The refinery, initially processing 40,000 barrels of oil daily, aims to gradually increase its capacity to 100,000 barrels per day in its first phase.

Xu Ning Quan, the Executive Chairman of Sentuo Group, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts involving government institutions and traditional authorities that facilitated the establishment of the Sentuo Oil Refinery.

  • “Africa is too rich to be poor,” Akufo-Addo urges value addition for true prosperity

“Africa is too rich to be poor,” Akufo-Addo urges value addition for true prosperity

President Nana Akufo-Addo made a strong case for Africa’s economic potential at the opening of the 2024 Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD) by highlighting the continent’s abundant natural resources and stressing the need of value addition and utilizing the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) to its fullest.

President Akufo-Addo passionately encourages African nations to shift from traditional resource extraction practices to investing in processing and manufacturing finished goods.

He asserts that industrialization, coupled with adding value to raw materials and robust infrastructure development, is vital for elevating intra-Africa trade from its current negligible levels.

Africa, contributing only 3.0% to global trade, faces historic challenges rooted in a colonial economic model.

Asserting that “Africa is too rich to be poor,” President Akufo-Addo’s call aligns with the growing momentum for the AfCFTA, recognized as the world’s largest free trade zone by participant count.

The agreement holds the potential to boost intra-African trade by 53%, presenting a promising avenue for economic development and diversification.

Despite these prospects, challenges persist, including infrastructure gaps, complex regulations, and limited access to finance hindering seamless intra-African trade.

President Akufo-Addo calls on African leaders to address these obstacles head-on, advocating for streamlined customs procedures, increased infrastructure investments, and enhanced cooperation to fully harness the AfCFTA’s potential.

The Africa Prosperity Dialogues, an annual forum dedicated to advancing economic cooperation and integration across the continent, serve as a vital platform for discussing challenges and formulating collaborative solutions.

With President Akufo-Addo’s rallying cry echoing across the continent, the 2024 edition of APD aims to be a catalyst for transformative change in Africa’s economic landscape, centered around the theme “Delivering Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add Value, Trade.”

  • NPP primaries: I am not camping delegates – Ursula Owusu refutes claims

NPP primaries: I am not camping delegates – Ursula Owusu refutes claims

Ablekuma West Member of Parliament (MP), Ursula Owusu Ekuful, has refuted accusations made by her opponent, Roni Kwesi Nicol, claiming she breached party protocols by camping delegates at the Christian Home Centre in Dansoman during the ongoing primaries.

Despite directives from the NPP against camping and transportation of delegates to voting centers to ensure a fair election, camping of delegates has been a commonly employed strategy in party elections to influence voting.

In response to the allegations, the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation defended herself in an interview on Adom TV, asserting that there is no truth to the claims.

Owusu Ekuful clarified that she had only provided breakfast for the delegates and accused her opponent of making baseless allegations to undermine her.

“We use the terms loosely without understanding. I have only provided breakfast for them, but when people are losing, they make allegations to discredit their opponent,” she stated.

The MP emphasised that her actions were a considerate gesture to address the delegates’ hunger before the election, questioning whether the allegations were fueled by fear of her potential victory.

The controversy highlights the tension surrounding campaign practices and adherence to party guidelines in the lead-up to the primaries.

  • IMF report reveals Ghana’s persistent debt distress amid ongoing restructuring

IMF report reveals Ghana’s persistent debt distress amid ongoing restructuring

Ghana remains trapped in debt distress, as disclosed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its recent Staff Report on Ghana’s “2023 Article IV Consultation.” Despite the ongoing debt restructuring efforts, the IMF highlighted that the attached Debt Sustainability Analysis (DSA) indicates substantial and prolonged breaches of standard thresholds.

The Fund emphasized that Ghana’s debt remains unsustainable, echoing the findings of the DSA published in May 2023. The report comes in the aftermath of a meeting held on October 6, 2023, between a team from the IMF and the Government of Ghana, focusing on policies supporting the IMF arrangement under the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) program.

    Background:

In 2023, Ghana initiated a debt restructuring program as a prerequisite for securing the IMF program, with the aim of bringing the country’s debt to sustainable levels. The comprehensive debt restructuring strategy aimed to mitigate the risk of debt distress under the IMF-World Bank Debt Sustainability Framework for low-income countries (LIC-DSF). The plan targeted external debt service relief and a reduction in domestic financing pressures.

IMF’s Insight into Ghana’s Debt Sustainability:

The IMF underscored that Ghana’s macroeconomic framework forms the basis of the Debt Sustainability Analysis, with the staff baseline scenario aligned with the trajectory envisioned under the Fund-supported program. The objective is to restore macroeconomic stability and debt sustainability in the medium term.

The report highlighted that Ghana’s fiscal and external positions significantly deteriorated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, global financial conditions, and the conflict in Ukraine.

These external shocks, coupled with existing fiscal and debt vulnerabilities, resulted in a surge in public and external debt.

Consequently, Ghana lost international market access in late 2021, and the macroeconomic situation became more challenging in 2022, with substantial losses.

According to the IMF, the economic slowdown and large fiscal deficits prompted a surge in public debt from 63.0% of GDP in 2019 to 93.3% of GDP at the end of 2022.

Domestic debt reached 50% of GDP in 2022, with 16.0% held by the Bank of Ghana, while public external debt stood at 43.3% of GDP.

  • Ghana’s energy sector arrears soar to $1.6 Billion, IMF raises concerns over gov’t payables in 2023

Ghana’s energy sector arrears soar to $1.6 Billion, IMF raises concerns over gov’t payables in 2023

Ghana’s energy sector is grappling with arrears amounting to $1.6 billion, equivalent to 2.3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as of the close of 2022, according to recent findings.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed further apprehension, revealing that non-energy sector arrears reached approximately GH¢35 billion, constituting 5.8% of the GDP.

In its 2023 Article IV Consultation, the IMF disclosed that the government persistently accrued payables in the initial half of 2023, surpassing the related program indicative target (IT).

The Bretton Wood institution highlighted the government’s accumulation of substantial arrears in recent years, with a stock-taking exercise conducted by authorities indicating an overall arrear stock at the end of 2022 largely aligning with initial program assumptions.

The report underscored a decline in non-energy sector payables, contrasting with a surge in energy sector payables attributed to low recoveries, stringent financing conditions, and pending negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

While energy sector payables are solely monitored under the Indicative Target, the IMF emphasized that adjusting the primary balance to accommodate the accumulation of energy sector payables during the first half of 2023 would still result in outperformance of the end-June primary balance target.

  • I will prioritize stalled development projects in the Ashanti Region when I regain power – Mahama

I will prioritize stalled development projects in the Ashanti Region when I regain power – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will prioritize completing stalled development projects in the Ashanti region.

During his ‘Building Ghana Tour,’ President Mahama emphasized the importance of finishing ongoing projects before initiating new ones to optimize the allocation of scarce resources in the country.

Expressing dismay over the abandonment of NDC-initiated projects in the Ashanti Region by the NPP, Mahama cited examples such as the industrial hub at Adansi Fomena and the Obuasi Deeps Decline (ODD) projects.

These projects, initiated between 2014 and 2016, were left incomplete when the NDC left office, and he highlighted the New Patriotic Party’s claim of credit for the benefits of the Obuasi Deeps Decline (ODD) projects today.

Additionally, Mahama asserted that the Obuasi Campus of Kwame Nkrumah University Science and Technology (KNUST) and the Obuasi bus terminal were direct initiatives of the NDC Government.

He assured the traditional council that mining profits would be utilised judiciously for the development of the Adansi community if he was re-elected.

Addressing concerns at the New-Edubiase Chief’s palace, Mahama outlined achievements by the previous NDC government, including the district hospital, Fumso schools, Obuasi schools, stadium, and Obuasi town roads.

He pledged to continue such developmental efforts if voted back into power.

During the tour, Opagyakotwere Bonsra Afriyie II, paramount Chief of Adansi-Fomena, urged Mahama to consider reviewing the 1992 Constitution, pointing out problematic provisions.

In a similar vein, Nana Oduro Panin Bikorang II, Chief of New-Edubiase, advised Mahama to address those responsible for illegal mining activities that harm water bodies and forest vegetation.

  • NPP primaries: Hackman Owusu-Agyemang’s name withdrawn from voter register

NPP primaries: Hackman Owusu-Agyemang’s name withdrawn from voter register

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for New Juaben North, Hackman Owusu Agyemang, encountered a brief challenge during the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries when his name couldn’t be located in the register upon his arrival at the constituency to vote.

The Chairman of the NPP Council of Elders disclosed the incident during an interview with Maxwell Kudekor from Adom News.

Despite the initial confusion, Mr. Agyemang reassured that the issue was swiftly resolved, allowing him to successfully cast his vote.

He humorously remarked, “When I came, they couldn’t find my name because I am the only founder, I guess, but eventually, it has been sorted, and I have voted.”
In response to the situation, Gary Nimako, the Director of Legal Affairs, attributed it to a minor procedural error.

He suggested that the glitch may have originated from the IT department, emphasizing the need for meticulous checking of names by aspirants and their teams.

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to conduct its parliamentary primaries in constituencies with sitting MPs today, January 27, 2024.

The polls are expected to occur in 105 constituencies nationwide, with a few incumbent MPs going unopposed.

The National Executive Council of the party earlier disqualified 17 persons from contesting in the parliamentary primaries, leaving 322 candidates to contest.

The primaries are deemed to be fiercely contested nationwide.

Some constituencies appear to be battlegrounds ahead of the polls, which will elect candidates for the party ahead of the December general election.

Adansi Asokwa, Dome Kwabenya, Asante Akim Central, Bantama, Tano North, Old Tafo and Bekwai are deemed to be battleground constituencies.

The party experienced a notable decline, losing 32 seats and reducing the numbers to 137, whilst the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) gained some seats, bringing their total to 137.

The NPP only regained the parliamentary majority when an independent candidate decided to align with them in Parliament.

The voting will commence at 0700 hours and end at 1400 hours today.

There would be no proxy voting.

In a statement dated January 19, 2024, the party urged aspirants and other stakeholders to comply with all regulations to ensure a smooth and transparent process.
