Afriyie Ankrah clears the air on oath-swearing video: It was taken in 2020, not 2024

The former Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, has issued a statement to clarify the context of a viral video in which he and other NDC executives swore an oath with a sword.

Ankrah said that the video was recorded in 2020, before the general elections, when he was the Director of Elections for the party. He said that the oath was part of his strategy to ensure that the party’s work was done with integrity and loyalty.

“The said ceremony was arranged at my own behest ahead of the past general elections of 2020 when I was the Director of Elections of our party,” Ankrah said in the statement dated January 18.

He said that he took his role seriously and was committed to serving the party and its members and supporters.

He also dismissed the rumours and reports that the video was related to the party’s current national executives or officials in charge of the 2024 general elections. He said that the video was inaccurate, misleading, and deliberately twisted to suit the agenda of the party’s detractors.

He urged the public to ignore the misinformation and focus on the party’s agenda to win the next elections.

The video, which has been circulating on social media, shows Ankrah and other National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials standing on a white cloth and holding a long, shiny sword, as they take turns to recite the oath.

The oath involves a pledge not to compromise the party’s interests for personal gain in the upcoming elections, with dire consequences if they were to break their vow.

The oath ends with Ankrah saying, “I vow that if I compromise and sell my party out for money for this coming election, may I die and my first child also die in my place. So help me God.”

Ankrah’s statement aims to clear the air on the video and reaffirm his dedication to the NDC.

“Maurice Ampaw isn’t our spokesperson, we haven’t sent him” – NPP tells Manhyia

The General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, appeared before the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace to respond to an unsavoury comment allegedly passed by the Ashanti Regional Chairman Wontunmi during a vetting process.

General Secretary of the NPP, Justin Frimpong Kodua appeared before the Asanteman Council together with the National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye as well as some regional executives of the party to plead on behalf of the Regional Chairman.

“Otumfuo, we are here with all humility to plead on behalf of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to let go of any bad utterances made to you (Otumfuo). As the General Secretary of the NPP, I wouldn;t stand there and watch anyone bring the name of the king into disrepute,” Justin Kodua Frimpong stated.

This is as a result of Private legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw earlier outburst which sought to denigrate some chiefs in the Ashanti region.

Lawyer Ampaw alleged in the video that, “some chiefs in the Ashanti Region are corrupt.”

Also, a report by Onuaonline.com, the incident occurred during a sitting of the NPP parliamentary primaries vetting committee last week, Wontumi, without provocation, reportedly declared his intention to challenge the Asantehene, asserting that, “I have built my own kingdom, I have my own police and military, and I will speak my mind to Otumfuo if I disagree on an issue with him.”

Justin Kodua Frimpong expressed regret over the statement indicating none of the gentlemen (Chairman Wontunmi and Maurice Ampaw) speak on behalf of the NPP.

“All ways I say supposing there is a choice between the New Patriotic Party and the Asanteman kingdom, I will choose the Asanteman Kingdom,” Justin Kodua Frimpong stated to further seek plea.

However, conspicuously missing was Bernard Antwi Boasiako. Mr Kodua told the chiefs that Wontumi was indisposed “Nananom, we could not come with Chairman Wontumi because he has not been well.”

But, the excuse did not sit well with some of the chiefs.

For instance, one of Otumfuo’s chief linguists, Nana Kwaku Owusu demanded for a medical report of Wontumi “if you claim Wontumi is sick, where is his doctor’s report?” he queried.

Mr. Frimpong Kodua pleaded for clemency as he was unable to present the doctor’s report requested.

On 17 December 2023, the family of the 62-year-old actor further revealed the reason behind his inability to be flown abroad for additional treatment.

The family explained in a statement that doctors deemed him ‘Not Fit to Fly,’ rendering it challenging to arrange his departure for advanced medical treatment due to the airlines’ refusal to transport him.

According to the family, the cause of the illness was not diabetes but a persistent clotting of blood in Mr. Ibu’s leg, stemming from diseased blood vessels, along with other health challenges that posed a significant risk to his life.

Isabel Mebarak Ripoll popularly known as Shakira and her former Barcelona football partner Gerard Pique are taking decisive steps to shield their two children from an alleged stalker, Daniel John Valtier, who recently gained attention for claiming to be Shakira’s husband.

In a recent development, the Colombian songstress, relieved after Valtier’s arrest earlier this month in Miami Beach, is now collaborating with Pique to ensure the ongoing safety of their kids.

The duo is concerned that the stalker may be released by posting bail, prompting them to take additional precautions.

Here are the top five reasons he outlines for avoiding relationships with individuals facing financial challenges.

Ike emphasises that relationships with financially struggling individuals can be tiresome and unappreciative, regardless of the efforts invested in them.

He asserts that the lack of support from such partners adds an additional layer of difficulty.

The controversial influencer highlights a perceived sense of entitlement among those facing financial difficulties, suggesting that they often expect more than they contribute.

He also labels them as attention seekers, pointing out their constant need for validation.

Questioning the choice to settle for financially struggling partners in a society teeming with intelligent and hardworking individuals, Ike Onyema challenges the conventional wisdom behind such decisions.

In his own words, Ike states, “Some reasons you should avoid dating broke people, starting from the fact that they are not supportive; they are also draining and lack gratitude irrespective of what you do for them. They almost always have a Sense of Entitlement. They expect 24 hours attention. There are tons of smart, hardworking ppl out there ready to mingle. So why settle for the broke pple??”

Meek Mill replies critics over controversial tweet about Africa: “How do you listen to my music?”

In a recent social media post, popular American rapper Robert Rihmeek Williams popularly known as Meek Mill ignited a firestorm of criticism after questioning how his music is consumed in Nigeria and South Africa.

The rapper’s inquiry, posted on X, led to accusations of ignorance and insensitivity from many African users.

Meek Mill’s query, “Do a lot of people play my music in South Africa? How do you all listen to our music in South Africa???? On what platform, or in Nigeria?” drew sharp rebukes as some felt it implied a lack of technological advancement in Africa’s music distribution landscape.

As the backlash intensified, the rapper became a trending topic on X, with critics highlighting the perceived assumption about the continent’s technological capabilities.

Some users responded humorously, suggesting absurd methods like listening through elephant trunks and town criers.

In an attempt to clarify his intentions, Meek Mill responded to the criticism on Sunday, asserting that his inquiry was driven by a desire to understand how his music is distributed in Africa and manage his business effectively.

The rapper explained, “I was asking how they listen to music in Africa because I want to handle my business. None of my contracts say they have rights to distribute me in Africa… basically looking for the money trail? I don’t know what platforms [are] used in South Africa.”

  • Infuriated fans may file lawsuits against artists who begin performances later than scheduled

Infuriated fans may file lawsuits against artists who begin performances later than scheduled

In the aftermath of the uproar surrounding King Promise‘s delayed Promise Land event, it appears that unpunctual artists may be in for more than just disgruntled fans they could face legal action.

Concert attendees now have the right to seek damages and refunds for delayed performances, as recent events shed light on the legal battleground created by prolonged concert delays.

Patrons eagerly assembled at the venue for the stipulated 9 pm start time, only to find themselves in the dark at 11:28 pm due to a power outage.

The frustration echoed the sentiments of Madonna’s New York City concert last month, where two fans are reportedly suing her for a late start.

The delayed musical experience finally commenced an hour and a few minutes past midnight, testing the audience’s patience for over six hours.

Legal expert Adwoa Painstil, speaking on Hitz FM, highlighted the legal implications of such concert delays, emphasising that citizens who left the event before it officially started could band together and sue the artist or organisers.

Painstil explained that the basis for such legal action lies in the ‘breach of contract’ where the organisers failed to honour the specified start time.

For attendees who depart when the event hasn’t started after a significant delay, typically around 9 or 10 when it was supposed to start at 8, they hold the right to pursue legal action.

However, for those who endure and stay until the event finally kicks off, the window for legal recourse narrows.

This revelation adds a new dimension to the concert experience, as fans now possess the legal means to demand punctuality from artists and event organisers.

The next time you find yourself waiting in the dark for a late concert to begin, remember Lawyer Adwoa Painstil’s advice, you may just hold the key to a legal encore.

Why do alcohol companies fail to use real drunkards in their adverts – Fella Makafui quizzes

Ghanaian actress and singer Fella Makafui took to twitter now  X on Sunday, January 21, to challenge alcohol brands for not showcasing real customers particularly those who may be visibly intoxicated in their advertisements.

The Yolo star raised the query, “I have never seen an ALCOHOL company using a drunk person for any advertising. Are they ashamed of their customers?”

This inquiry by Fella Makafui brings attention to the prevalent trend among alcohol brands, which generally feature moderate, stylish social drinking in their promotional material, steering clear of the less flattering realities that some customers may experience.

The objective of such advertising strategies is to normalise drinking and present it as a fun, casual aspect of life.

Nevertheless, critics argue that the deliberate exclusion of visibly drunk customers may hinder this goal and open the door to public criticism.

Beyond the beauty, there are legal considerations at play, as many countries have restrictions on alcohol advertising that prohibit the depiction of binge or irresponsible drinking.

These regulations are in place to address health and social concerns associated with excessive alcohol consumption.

Fella Makafui’s stance has reignited debates on responsible marketing practices within the alcohol industry, prompting discussions on the balance between portraying a glamorous image and acknowledging the potential consequences of excessive drinking.

Chief Moomen advocates caution in positioning Ghana as a diaspora resettlement hub

Renowned poet and playwright, Chief Moomen, urges the government to reconsider promoting Ghana as a resettlement destination for the African diaspora, citing concerns about potential impact on local living standards.

In a recent interview on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z, Chief Moomen expressed uneasiness about the growing push to attract diaspora settlement, warning of the risk of ordinary Ghanaians being priced out of the property market.

He highlighted the need for careful management, asserting, “There is this whole positioning of Ghana especially to the diaspora, ‘come back, return, invest and buy land.’ If we do not manage it very well, it is going to cause tension in the future.”

Chief Moomen suggested that while Ghana should remain open and welcoming, it might be wiser to position the country as a pilgrimage rather than a resettlement destination for diasporans.

Drawing a parallel with the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca, he emphasised, “Our positioning should be more of a transit, as a pilgrimage, almost a Mecca for the Pan African.”

The poet and playwright cautioned against an active policy promoting resettlement, proposing a more measured approach.

He explained, “I don’t think we should have a very active policy that says people should come and resettle.”

Chief Moomen warned of unintended consequences if the current trend of diaspora resettlement in Ghana continues to escalate.

He emphasised the importance of balancing the opportunity for tourism growth with careful consideration for the impact on local affordability.

In conclusion, Chief Moomen urged policymakers to navigate the delicate balance between welcoming diasporans and preserving the well-being of ordinary Ghanaians.
