Ensure Agenda 111 project is completed – Akufo-Addo urges Mahama

Outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged the incoming administration of John Mahama to ensure the completion of the Agenda 111 hospital projects aimed at strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system.

Speaking during his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament on Friday, January 3, Akufo-Addo highlighted his efforts to build a robust healthcare infrastructure, with the Agenda 111 initiative as a key component.

“The most important intervention is the Agenda 111 project that we have embarked upon. I am hoping that the incoming Mahama administration will ensure that the project is completed, so we can have our health infrastructure in a sound state,” he said.

The President disclosed that out of the 111 district hospitals and two psychiatric hospitals planned under the initiative, three have already been completed and commissioned, while the rest are at various stages of completion.

The Agenda 111 project, launched by the Akufo-Addo government, seeks to construct healthcare facilities in 90 districts across the country, especially targeting areas lacking major health centers. However, some of the projects remain at the foundation level, despite significant financial investments.

The initiative has cost the state millions of dollars, and the government recently announced the need for additional funding to ensure the completion of the ongoing construction works.

  • Galamsey fight indirectly affected my second term in office – Akufo-Addo

Galamsey fight indirectly affected my second term in office – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has acknowledged that the fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey, had an indirect but significant impact on his second term in office and his political party.

In his final State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Friday, January 3, 2025, President Akufo-Addo reflected on the political consequences of the galamsey battle, noting that it led to the loss of several parliamentary seats by his party in the 2020 elections.

He explained that this shift in the composition of the eighth Parliament influenced the implementation of his policy agenda, affecting his second term as President.

“The fight against galamsey led to the loss of several parliamentary seats by my party in the 2020 elections, which ultimately influenced the composition of the eighth Parliament. This, in turn, affected the implementation of my policy agenda and had a significant impact on my second term as President,” he stated.

Despite these challenges, President Akufo-Addo expressed optimism about the growing support for the government’s anti-galamsey initiatives, particularly as the 2024 elections approach. He welcomed the sudden surge of support for the fight against illegal mining and emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to protect the nation’s natural resources.

“I welcome the many loud converts to the fight against Galamsey that suddenly appeared in the run up to the 2024 elections and I pray that more and more of us get to embrace the need for the protection of our lands and waterbodies,” he remarked.

The President stressed the need for responsible mineral extraction that ensures the long-term preservation of the country’s environment.

“We owe it to future generations of Ghanaians to extract our minerals in a manner that protects our lands and waterbodies,” he urged.

Aide-de-camp to Akufo-Addo collapses during delivery of 2025 SONA

A concerning incident occurred during President Nana Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation Address today when his aide-de-camp, Colonel Isaac Amponsah, collapsed while standing guard in Parliament.

The collapse happened shortly after the President began delivering his speech, which focused on the government’s accomplishments and vision for the future.

Col. Amponsah, a dedicated member of the President’s security detail for many years, suddenly lost his footing and fell to the ground without warning.

Parliament’s medical team quickly responded, providing initial first aid before transporting Col. Amponsah to a nearby medical facility for further evaluation.

The President, visibly concerned by the incident, paused his address briefly to ensure that Col. Amponsah received the necessary attention.

Despite the interruption, the State of the Nation Address continued without further disruptions, with President Akufo-Addo outlining Ghana’s progress during his term and the country’s future trajectory.

Further updates on Col. Amponsah’s health are expected in the coming hours.

My prayers are with you – Akufo-Addo commiserates with victims of Kantamanto market fire incident

President Nana Akufo-Addo has extended his condolences to victims of the devastating fire that ravaged Kantamanto Market in Accra’s Central Business District, which claimed one life and left many others displaced.

During his final State of the Nation Address on Friday, January 3, the President described the incident as “deeply shocking” and expressed solidarity with the affected traders. He assured them of the government’s support in their recovery efforts.

“My thoughts and prayers are with those affected,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to working with relevant agencies to determine the cause of the fire and provide assistance to the victims.

The fire, which broke out at dawn on Thursday, January 2, destroyed over 7,000 shops, leaving 14 people seriously injured and affecting more than 30,000 traders. Efforts to control the blaze were delayed due to water shortages and logistical challenges, resulting in extensive damage.

Aftermath of fire incident at Kantamanto Market

Chairman of the Kantamanto Traders Association, Samuel Amoah, described the situation as devastating and pleaded for urgent intervention from the government.

“Many traders have lost both their homes and livelihoods, and their only hope is to be allowed to return and work peacefully,” Mr. Amoah said in an interview with JoyNews.

He added that traders had begun clearing the debris and called on the government to assist in the rebuilding process.

As the nation mourns the tragedy, President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to show compassion and unity, saying, “Together, we can extend a helping hand to our fellow Ghanaians in need during this challenging time.”

  • Ghana is not broke, we are handing over almost $8bn in international reserves – Akufo-Addo

Ghana is not broke, we are handing over almost $8bn in international reserves – Akufo-Addo

Outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo has emphasized that Ghana is not financially distressed, citing nearly $8 billion in gross international reserves as his government prepares to leave office.

Addressing Parliament during his final State of the Nation Address, President Akufo-Addo stated that the economy was showing strong signs of recovery, with improved fiscal stability and debt sustainability.

“The economy is rebounding strongly. Our fiscal position is more stable. Our debt sustainability has significantly improved,” he noted.

Rejecting claims that the country was bankrupt, he added, “Mr. Speaker, the country is not broke as some propagandists want us to believe. We are handing over the country with gross international reserves of almost $8 billion. This is more than the $6.2 billion gross international reserves my administration inherited in 2017.”

Data from the Bank of Ghana (BoG) confirms the reserves, showing an increase from $7.83 billion in September to $7.92 billion in November 2024.

Despite the positive outlook on reserves, Ghana’s debt stock remains a challenge, reaching GH₵761.2 billion as of July 2024, representing 75.7% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

This marks a significant rise compared to the GH₵587.7 billion recorded during the same period in 2023, which accounted for 70.3% of GDP.

The Bank of Ghana’s September 2024 Summary of Economic and Financial Data also indicated that the external component of the debt increased to $31.6 billion from $30 billion a year earlier, representing 46.1% of GDP.

Meanwhile, the domestic debt component stood at GH₵290.9 billion, equivalent to 28.5% of GDP.

The government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) was introduced to address the rising debt by restructuring existing liabilities.

Asiedu Nketiah chides Akufo-Addo for national awards to ‘vigilante boys and girls’

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has taken a swipe at President Nana Akufo-Addo over the selection process for the recent National State Awards, accusing the government of undermining the credibility of the honors by awarding individuals he described as undeserving.

Speaking at the 43rd-anniversary celebration of the 31st December Revolution, Asiedu Nketiah argued that the lack of transparency and merit in selecting awardees has diminished the prestige of the awards.

“State awards are serious businesses. They must be reserved for people of distinction, people who have fought for a good cause. If we award state honours to vigilante boys and girls, then that is what we are teaching the youth—that after all, it is alright to pick weapons and shoot at people. That after all, it is alright to loot state coffers when you are allowed to serve as a minister,” he said.

The NDC chairman called for the establishment of a legal framework to regulate the organization and conferral of National and State Awards. He emphasized the need for fairness, transparency, and a merit-based system to restore public trust in the honors.

“I want to tell the rest of Ghanaians that it is about time we establish a proper committee backed by law that will help to determine who should earn a national award,” he added.

The National State Awards, held earlier this year, saw several high-ranking officials recognized for their contributions to public service. The Star of Ghana – Officer Award, the highest honor, was conferred on Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Recipients of the Order of the Volta – Officer category included:

I’m humbled by the trust you placed in me – Akufo-Addo tells Ghanaians as he exits

Outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo has described his eight-year tenure as Ghana’s leader as the greatest honour of his life.

Delivering his final end-of-year address, the president expressed deep gratitude to Ghanaians for the trust and confidence they reposed in him throughout his administration.

“Serving you has been the greatest honour of my life,” President Akufo-Addo said, reflecting on his journey as he prepares to hand over power to President-elect John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The president emphasized that he does not view himself solely as a leader but as a Ghanaian humbled by the opportunity to serve. “I stand before you not just as a leader, but as a fellow Ghanaian humbled by the trust you have placed in me,” he stated.

Highlighting key accomplishments of his presidency, President Akufo-Addo pointed to transformative initiatives such as the Free Senior High School programme, which he described as a defining achievement of his administration. He also touted progress made in the health, telecommunications, and agriculture sectors under his leadership.

President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians, particularly the youth, to seize the opportunities ahead, calling on them to “dream big and work hard.” He also reassured the public of Ghana’s economic recovery, citing significant strides made by the outgoing government despite global challenges.

“Our economy is rebounding impressively as demonstrated by the remarkable 7.2% growth achieved in the Q3 of 2024, with the year’s growth rate projected at 6.8%,” he noted.

“These achievements are not just numbers or statistics. They are stories of life changed and futures made brighter. But I also acknowledge the challenges we have faced. The road has not always been smooth, and there have been times of difficulty and sacrifice,” he added.

Reflecting on the impact of the post-COVID-19 period, the president commended the resilience of the Ghanaian people. “The post-COVID-19 years have tested us to our limit, but it also reminded us of who we are, a people who rise together no matter the odds.”

As he bids farewell to public office, President Akufo-Addo encouraged Ghanaians to embrace hope for the future. “As we step into 2025, I encourage us all to hold on to the hope that’s carried us this far,” he said.

  • Signing anti-LGBTQ bill will solidify your legacy – Lawrence Tetteh to Akufo-Addo

Signing anti-LGBTQ bill will solidify your legacy – Lawrence Tetteh to Akufo-Addo

The Founder of Worldwide Miracle Outreach, Rev. Dr. Lawrence Tetteh, has issued a heartfelt plea to outgoing President Akufo-Addo, urging him to sign the highly debated anti-LGBTQ bill before his tenure concludes.

Dr. Tetteh emphasized that doing so would not only cement the President’s legacy but also earn him lasting affection and respect from the Ghanaian public.

In an interview with GH One TV on December 30, 2024, the prominent clergyman argued that signing the bill would be one of Akufo-Addo’s most enduring achievements, strengthening his legacy as a leader committed to Ghana’s values.

The Reverend expressed dismay over the ongoing lawsuits that have delayed the bill’s passage, describing them as deliberate distractions meant to obstruct progress.

He recounted his participation in a meeting with the President, alongside religious leaders, to discuss the bill, which he felt failed to produce any concrete resolution.

“The anti-LGBTQ court issue was a distraction. I was privileged to be part of a nine-member committee that met with the President with Muslim and Christian representatives that felt the bill should be signed.

“Don’t forget that President Akufo-Addo came on a mantra that moved a lot of Christians ‘The battle is the Lord’s’. He is also a Christian and a fine gentleman who lost his wife unfortunately and remarried which means he believes in family values,” he said in the interview.

He added, “We thought of this and went to have a 3-hour meeting with His Excellency. A lot of us felt that that court case was a distraction and I think it’s not too late for President Akufo-Addo to sign that bill for Ghana. He should leave that as a legacy and people will love and be proud of him. He is going to be 81 years old on his next birthday and he has nothing to lose.

“The younger ones will be scared of what the international community will say and the pressure they will mount on us but who cares? I would love for him to leave that legacy for Ghanaians to be proud of him.”

Dr. Tetteh also pointed out that Akufo-Addo’s hesitation to sign the bill significantly contributed to his government’s defeat in the recent general elections.

“It played a big role. I mean if politicians are not looking at it from that point of view, they should take it from my point of view because that played a lot of role. Lots of people were very silent but they were not comfortable with it,” he concluded.

The controversial anti-LGBTQ bill remains unsigned, despite legal challenges lodged against it.

We pray Ghana never gets a disrespectful President like Akufo-Addo – Krontihene of Akyem Asuom

Nana Boadi Amponim Abodade III, the Krontihene of Akyem Asuom, has emphatically called on divine intervention to prevent Ghana from ever enduring another presidency like that of Nana Akufo-Addo.

He condemned the tribulations faced by the nation under Akufo-Addo’s regime, accusing government officials of brazen pillaging and describing the administration as catastrophically ineffectual.

Addressing journalists, Nana Abodade III conveyed his profound relief that President Akufo-Addo’s time in office would finally conclude in just over a week.

“Overall, we thank God that the good Lord is about to hand the mantle to President Mahama. As stated in Luke 10:29, Ghana has been stripped naked. Ghana is bleeding; the robbers have stolen all the goodies. But now, a good Samaritan has come to rescue her, restore her to good health, and recover the stolen loot. It was quite clear, but some people just didn’t realize it. Some of us are happy that his reign is coming to an end,” he said.

Nana Boadi Amponim Abodade III further noted that numerous chiefs are glad to witness the departure of President Akufo-Addo, whom they believe showed disrespect toward some of their peers during his tenure.

“A lot of chiefs are happy. A good friend of mine, who is also a chief, told me, ‘Let’s see if he [Akufo-Addo] will now go around and instruct chiefs to stand up and greet him.’ It is not a good legacy. He could have achieved much more. He had so much revenue and so many opportunities to do good for this country. We pray we never have another Akufo-Addo as President of Ghana. Overall, we thank God that the good Lord is about to give the mantle to President Mahama.”

How can a lawyer like you be so greedy? – Martin Kpebu to Akufo-Addo

A private legal practitioner, Martin Kpebu, has expressed disbelief over what he terms the greed of outgoing President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on TV3 during a panel discussion on Saturday, December 28, 2024, Mr Kpebu questioned how someone of Akufo-Addo’s stature could exhibit such tendencies.

“…I mean, look at the greed. You come in at age 73, and you are so greedy—greedier than John Mahama, who is not even a lawyer,” lawyer Kpebu stated.

He criticized President Akufo-Addo for what he viewed as a disappointing tenure, highlighting the stark contrast between the high expectations of his leadership and the lackluster outcomes in advancing Ghana’s prosperity.

“In 2016, I openly voted for Akufo-Addo and supported him because they said he had been prepared for 40 years. So, I keep saying, can you imagine how Akufo-Addo would have been if he had prepared for only 10 years? The story was that Akufo-Addo had been prepared from birth to be president—for 40 years. What would his performance have been like if he had prepared for only ten years? I am sure that by now, Ghana would have ceased to exist.”

President Akufo-Addo ascended to power after securing victory in the 2016 general election on his third bid for the presidency.

He will leave office on January 7, 2025, after completing two terms and serving Ghana as president for eight years.

  • ADB has approved $750K contract under duress from Akufo-Addo govt – Ablakwa

ADB has approved $750K contract under duress from Akufo-Addo govt – Ablakwa

North Tongu Member of Parliament (MP), Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has denounced what he terms “irresponsible and disloyal” actions by officials within the outgoing Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, accusing them of undermining national interest through questionable financial practices.

In a Facebook post dated December 26, Mr. Ablakwa unveiled what he called an “alarming surge” in last-minute contract approvals and expedited payments ahead of the January 7, 2025, government transition.

He claimed leaked documents expose financial irregularities that erode public trust and violate governance principles.

A key example highlighted by the MP involves the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), where the board purportedly greenlit a controversial $750,000 (GHS12 million) electronic servicing agreement with Virtual Security Africa. Despite being in draft form and amid unresolved negotiations, the deal has reportedly sparked consternation within the bank.

Mr. Ablakwa alleged that intense political pressure is being exerted on ADB to make the full payment by December 27, 2024, even though the agreement has not undergone mandatory audits or due diligence.

“Top ADB insiders are shocked at the Board’s decision,” he wrote, stating that the hasty process overlooks due diligence and erodes accountability.

He further pointed out that the President-elect’s Transition Team had explicitly warned against last-minute financial transactions, reiterating a stance similar to the one the New Patriotic Party (NPP) adopted during the 2016 transition period.

In his statement, Mr. Ablakwa issued a grave caution, declaring that officials who authorize these “questionable transactions” under political coercion will face legal and administrative repercussions under the incoming administration.

“For God and Country. Ghana First,” he asserted.

The exposé has ignited public indignation, with numerous citizens and civil society groups calling for swift investigations and punitive measures against those implicated in these alleged “midnight deals.”

  • Akufo-Addo’s arrogance played a role in our loss – NPP

Akufo-Addo’s arrogance played a role in our loss – NPP

Spokesperson for former President John Agyekum Kufuor, Frank Agyekum, has asserted that President Akufo-Addo bears partial responsibility for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) significant defeat in the 2024 general elections.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) triumphed over the NPP with a commanding margin of over 1.6 million votes.

During an interview on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr. Agyekum attributed the party’s electoral misfortune to widespread public disillusionment, exacerbated by what he described as an air of arrogance from certain party members.

He also criticized the imposition of unpopular parliamentary candidates, a practice he said alienated the grassroots and compounded the NPP’s woes, noting that these issues unfolded under President Akufo-Addo’s stewardship.

“The signs were there, and the narrative shows that things have been falling apart for a long time. We failed to heed the warnings and take corrective actions, and that’s what has led us here.

“The leader always bears the ultimate responsibility—it stops with him. When it’s good, we credit him; when it’s bad, he must share the blame,” he said.

Mr. Agyekum also expressed dissatisfaction with the selection of candidates for both the presidency and parliamentary seats, labeling the choices as suboptimal and contributing to the party’s challenges.

“There was arrogance, there was hardship in the system, and it seemed those in power failed to fully recognise the discontent. This disconnect between the leadership and the grassroots likely contributed to the significant defeat.”

  • Ghana opens its borders to all African nationals without visa requirements

Ghana opens its borders to all African nationals without visa requirements

President Akufo-Addo has honored his commitment to grant visa-free entry to all African nationals visiting Ghana.

This initiative, first announced at the Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD 2024) in January, is designed to promote the unrestricted movement of people, goods, and services within the continent.

The policy, which received executive approval on December 18, 2024, will be implemented before the end of Akufo-Addo’s presidency on January 6, 2025.

In line with the African Union’s aspirations for economic integration, the move aligns with the objectives of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Ghana will now join the ranks of countries like Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin that offer visa-free access to all African passport holders.

This policy is expected to play a key role in advancing Africa’s integration agenda, creating a more interconnected and collaborative business and governmental landscape across the continent.

In his APD 2024 keynote address, delivered under the theme “Developing Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add Value, and Trade,” President Akufo-Addo reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to the visa-free initiative.

“Many of you had to acquire a visa to attend this event,” he said, referencing a special arrangement that reduced visa fees for participants.

“The government of Ghana is committed to ensuring visa-free travel for all Africans, and the process has begun to implement the policy this year,” he assured attendees.

The policy has been communicated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, as well as the Ministry of the Interior, both of which have begun preparing for its rollout.

The Ghana Immigration Service is expected to officially announce the start date, which is anticipated to be Wednesday, January 1, 2025.

This initiative aims to boost business, tourism, and cultural exchanges across the continent, reinforcing Ghana’s role as a key player in fostering African unity and integration.

The policy comes in response to criticism surrounding stringent immigration rules in other African countries, underscoring the need for a more open and accessible approach to travel across the continent.

Business tycoon Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest individual, highlighted the challenges of dealing with visa requirements, further emphasizing the importance of this policy in easing movement within Africa.

“As an investor, I have to apply for 35 different visas,” he lamented at a business forum in Rwanda.

Mr. Dangote’s statement sheds light on the struggles faced by African business leaders and investors, who frequently find it easier to travel to Europe or the United States than to other African countries.

Ghana, the host country for the AfCFTA Secretariat, has been a strong advocate for the idea of a unified Africa, a vision that was first put forward by the nation’s founding father, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Unlike Ethiopia, which has received backlash for its stringent visa policies, Ghana’s initiative provides a forward-thinking example for the rest of Africa.

  • I pray for strength and wisdom for Ghana’s new leaders – Akufo-Addo

I pray for strength and wisdom for Ghana’s new leaders – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has expressed his sincere congratulations to the President-elect and the newly elected Members of Parliament following the 2024 general elections.

He offered prayers for their guidance, strength, and divine favor as they prepare to take on their new responsibilities.

In his Christmas address to the nation on Tuesday, December 24, President Akufo-Addo applauded Ghanaians for the successful and peaceful conclusion of the 2024 elections, calling it a landmark event in the country’s democratic journey.

“Fellow Ghanaians, this year, we have achieved another monumental milestone in our national development with a peaceful, free and fair election of a new president and new members of parliament, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the president-elect and the MPs-elect, wisdom, wisdom, strength and God’s blessings as they prepare to lead our beloved nation,” he said.

“I must nevertheless condemn, in no uncertain terms, the unnecessary acts of violence that have tarnished an otherwise exemplary democratic exercise,” he stated.

The President lauded the elections as a clear reflection of Ghana’s standing as a symbol of democracy in Africa.

At the same time, he acknowledged the challenges that arose during the electoral process.

President Akufo-Addo firmly condemned the instances of post-election violence, which tarnished what was otherwise a commendable democratic event.

  • I may not stay composed if I have to face Ablakwa during ORAL session – Freddie Blay

I may not stay composed if I have to face Ablakwa during ORAL session – Freddie Blay

The ex-NPP National Chairman, Freddie Blay, has stated that he is prepared to engage with the committee formed by President-elect John Dramani Mahama to lay the groundwork for his Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative.

However, Blay warned that his patience might wear thin during the process, especially given Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s role as the committee’s chair.

Speaking to JoyNews, “I am saying if it’s a proper organization and has a basis in law and they even invite me that they have something and they want me to appear, Okudzeto, I will meet him. Unfortunately, he will be the chair. If I don’t take care, I might be a little bit… I will lose my temper with him because of what he’s been saying, the disgrace, the defamation, the libellous things he’s been talking and writing. It may provoke me. I wouldn’t know what my reaction will be,” he said.

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has made several accusations against members of the Blay family, including claims of illegally acquiring state lands.

In response to these allegations, Freddie Blay refuted any wrongdoing, insisting that neither he nor his children, Kwame and Kwaw, who were mentioned by the MP, were involved in any illicit activities.

“My family has not taken a pesewa from the Ghana government unlawfully. We have not taken any government land unlawfully. We have not done anything that you can blame me for. If Okudzeto now is convinced that I’ve done that, then I’m a little careful about what ORAL wants to do,” he said in an interview with Accra-based JoyNews.

“I’ve sued him for defamation, and my two children have sued him also for defamation because we have not taken any government land and yet give that impression. He organizes people with placards and makes it look as if my two sons and I have stolen government lands. He calls that state capture. That I will resist. Justice Cecilia Naa Shormeh Davis has officially joined the Court of Appeal following her swearing-in by President Akufo-Addo.

The event, held at the Jubilee House on Friday, December 20, 2024, included the administration of the Oath of Allegiance, the Judicial Oath, and the Oath of Secrecy by the President.

As the newest member of Ghana’s Court of Appeal, Justice Davis becomes part of a 35-member bench in the nation’s second-highest court. Her appointment highlights her dedication to upholding justice and her reputation for delivering fair and unbiased rulings.

Bringing over nine years of expertise as a High Court judge, Justice Davis is anticipated to contribute significantly to strengthening judicial efficiency and safeguarding the rule of law.

President Akufo-Addo encouraged her to embrace her role with humility, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to serving the citizens of Ghana.

He said “As you take on the duty as Justice of the Court of Appeal, I urge you to approach your duty with humility, integrity and a deep sense of responsibility. Remember that the power you wield as a Judge is not for personal gain or aggrandizement but for service to the Ghanaian people.

Every decision you make should be guided by the principles of fairness, justice and the rule of law. You have a profound obligation to ensure that our Judiciary remains a beacon of hope for the citizenry and a pillar of strength for our democracy.

Justice Cecilia Davis, the task before you is not an easy one. The decisions you make will have an impact, not only on the parties before you but also on the broader society.”

Justice Cecilia Naa Shormeh Davis pledged her unwavering commitment to dispensing justice with integrity and fairness.

“I assure you, Your Excellency that I have just taken three Oaths and I promise to live by them by the Grace of God. I promise to discharge my duties, to dispense justice in accordance with the law, to all manner of persons without fear or favour,” she added.

Justice Davis’ legal journey began with her appointment as a High Court Judge on July 15, 2016, by then-Chief Justice Georgina Theodora Wood. Her appointment followed a major judicial reform after a corruption scandal rocked the judiciary.

During her tenure at the High Court, Justice Davis presided over numerous significant cases, solidifying her reputation for promoting justice and adherence to the rule of law. Her rulings consistently emphasized the importance of following proper legal procedures and respecting judicial processes, earning her recognition as a beacon of fairness and diligence in Ghana’s judiciary.

Justice Davis holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and History from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a Barrister-at-Law certificate from the Ghana School of Law, qualifying her as a lawyer in 1990. Her extensive legal background spans roles at the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Serious Fraud Office (now EOCO), and the Graphic Communications Group Limited. These diverse roles provided her with invaluable experience, shaping her into a seasoned legal professional and an authoritative voice in the judicial system.

Police must reassess tactics to manage post-election violence – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has called on the Ghana Police Service to review its approach to handling post-election violence.

Following the 2024 general elections, incidents of violence, including damage to public property and Electoral Commission (EC) offices, were reported, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters allegedly involved.

The President expressed concern over these events and urged the police to implement more effective strategies to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

During the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Bicentennial Anniversary on December 22, 2024, at Osu Castle, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of safeguarding the country’s democracy.

He stressed that peace and order are crucial to maintaining Ghana’s democratic values and national stability.

“I commended the security service, especially the police for the effective monitoring of the elections which ensured a peaceful nature. But I would like to ask the leadership of the police to review its practices that allow post-electoral violence to linger for too long before it’s brought under control.”

The President emphasized the crucial role of Ghanaians in safeguarding the country’s peace and ensuring its stability.

“As a nation, we must be resolute in our commitment to safeguarding peace, stability and democratic values that we have worked so hard to establish.”

Assent to anti-gay bill before you leave office – Presby Moderator to Akufo-Addo

The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has urged President Akufo-Addo to give his approval to the anti-gay bill before the conclusion of his tenure.

During the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana’s Bicentennial Anniversary on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at Osu Castle, Dr. Kwakye emphasized the critical importance of the bill and encouraged the President to strengthen his legacy by endorsing it.

“The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, for us Presbyterians, having given the bill our support at the time when the church was led by my predecessor, we interpreted this as our birthday gift for this year.

Your Excellency, make our joy complete, we are confident that in these last days, you will make our joy complete by assenting the bill so that it becomes a law in Ghana.

“We seek to preserve the values of the African people through the gospel. And we are confident that Sir you will do so.”

Dr. Kwakye’s statement follows the Supreme Court’s unanimous rejection of two petitions challenging the legality of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, often referred to as the anti-gay bill.

On December 18, the Court dismissed separate challenges filed by lawyer and journalist Richard Dela Sky and Amanda Odoi.

The bill, passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, has sparked intense debate nationwide. Proponents argue it protects traditional family structures, while opponents contend it violates human rights.

Even though the Court has dismissed the petitions, the bill’s fate remains uncertain, as President Akufo-Addo had previously indicated that he would await the resolution of all pending legal matters before making a final decision.

NDC will act swiftly on first quarter budget once we assume office – Ato Forson

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has guaranteed that a National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will act swiftly to meet the financial requirements for the first quarter of 2025 once it assumes office on January 7.

This pledge follows the Finance Minister’s failure to present the 2025 mini-budget, creating uncertainty about the country’s funding plans for the beginning of the year.

Addressing the media after Parliament adjourned until January 2, Dr. Forson criticized the outgoing government for its lack of preparation, describing the situation as a significant governance failure.

He warned that the absence of a mini-budget could lead to disruptions in key public services, placing a heavy burden on ordinary citizens.

Dr. Forson further stressed that the outgoing Akufo-Addo administration would be held responsible for any unfulfilled promises or chaos caused by the lack of proper financial planning.

The Minority Leader assured that the NDC would take immediate action once in power to stabilize the economy and meet essential spending requirements.

He emphasized his commitment to protecting the interests of Ghanaians and vowed that the NDC government would implement measures to prevent further economic hardship.

Dr. Forson also urged the outgoing government to take responsibility for its lack of action and ensure a smooth transition to avoid unnecessary economic difficulties during the handover period.

“However, the NDC Minority Caucus would like to assure the good people of Ghana and all stakeholders that the NDC government that will take over on January 7, 2025, will act with dispatch to cater for expenditure for the first quarter of 2025.

“There is no cause for alarm! Even though there will be no Minister of Finance on January 7, 2025, the Vice President can present to this House the expenditure in advance of Appropriation any time after swearing-in on the 7th and Parliament will be properly constituted to expedite approval of the same.”

“These criteria include excellence in governance, quality assurance, academic delivery, research and community engagement,”he added.

The President also called on the universities to continue their pursuit of excellence, emphasizing the importance of academic integrity, inclusivity, and student development. Sheila Bartels, the Member of Parliament for Ablekuma North, has urged the incoming government to make use of the vehicles left by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s administration to save public funds.

She explained that the current government is leaving behind a well-maintained fleet that can serve the new appointees in John Dramani Mahama’s government for their official work.

In a post on social media, Bartels, who won’t be returning to Parliament, pointed out the resources that have been handed over during the transition.

“The Akufo-Addo government has so far handed over 200 pickups, 200 motorbikes, and 20 brand-new land cruisers to the incoming NDC administration via the transition team,” she stated.

She stated that the incoming government shouldn’t need to buy extra vehicles, especially expensive SUVs, in order to save taxpayers’ money.

The statue of President Akufo-Addo at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi has been fully restored after a section was damaged by unknown individuals.

The monument, unveiled on November 6 to celebrate the president, had a noticeable hole at the back of one leg.

While the cause of the damage remains uncertain, some speculate it might have been vandalized following prior threats by locals to remove it. Others suggest a possible structural issue could be to blame.

Residents have voiced dissatisfaction over the statue, arguing that priority should be given to addressing unfinished projects in the region, including the Takoradi Market Circle, the PTC roundabout interchange, and the Sekondi-Takoradi road expansion.

According to Channel One TV’s Western Regional Correspondent, Akwasi Agyei Annim, the statue has now been repaired, resolving the issue.

The former Member of Parliament for Obuasi East, Edward Ennin, has offered to assist in revealing what he claims is widespread corruption under the Akufo-Addo administration.

During an interview with UTV, Mr Ennin stated he is prepared to testify before any investigative committee looking into the alleged misappropriation of state funds.

He also suggested that Ghana’s ambassadors and high commissioners are aware of where the stolen money has been sent, and that these details will come to light when the country holds individuals accountable for their actions.

“I was at the home of one big personality together with three ambassadors, from France, the UK, and the US, and the conversation that was had there was dangerous… The ambassadors know about all the monies that are stolen from the country and sent abroad. We are all going to see what will happen.

“I went to Guyana and you would be amazed at the kind of things I saw there. Go and ask the people investing in the oil blocks over there. The day of reckoning is coming,” he said.

He added, “When it comes, I’m prepared to go before the committee. I would do this because we have to put Ghana first. When the time comes, I will go and present my evidence.”

The former MP expressed his intention to assist in identifying those responsible for the illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) issue, including local government officials and lawmakers who may be involved in the practice.

He emphasized his readiness to help shed light on the individuals enabling these illegal operations.

Our loss won’t break us; we’ll return stronger – Miracles Aboagye reassures NPP

Communications Director for Dr. Bawumia’s campaign, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to reflect on its loss in the 2024 elections and strategize for a stronger comeback.

Speaking on Channel One TV, Aboagye described the outcome as a moment for introspection, urging the party to analyze the factors that led to its defeat.

He dismissed claims that President Nana Akufo-Addo should bear sole responsibility, emphasizing that the results were a reflection of collective efforts within the government.

He pointed out that officials tasked with executing the administration’s vision also share responsibility for the party’s performance at the polls.

Aboagye encouraged the NPP to unify and draw valuable lessons from the setback to rebuild effectively for future electoral success.

“I don’t know, I mean the government lost the elections. I have learnt a lot in this life at a very young age to realise that you win as a team and you lose as a team.”

“I was a Metropolitan Chief Executive, it is possible that in some areas they needed a little bridge, Akufo-Addo has put me there. He’s not in my constituency, he’s not in my municipality, it’s possible that I didn’t do it and the people will be angry at the government,” he stated.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has praised President Akufo-Addo for overseeing Ghana’s peaceful and credible 2024 elections.

ECOWAS Chairman, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, hailed President Akufo-Addo’s dedication to democratic values and national stability, describing the election as a reflection of Ghana’s commitment to good governance.

“I congratulate President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the people of Ghana for the successful election and urge all of us in the region to learn from this good democratic practice and prioritise our country’s national unity to ensure the political stability of the region.”

During the final ECOWAS summit of 2024 held in Abuja, Nigeria, Tinubu highlighted Ghana’s electoral process as a model for other West African countries, encouraging leaders in the region to prioritize national unity and political stability.

He congratulated President Akufo-Addo and the citizens of Ghana for upholding democratic ideals and ensuring a smooth electoral process. ECOWAS observers who monitored the elections commended the fairness, transparency, and peaceful conduct of the polls.

The successful outcome has reinforced Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of democracy in West Africa, setting a positive example for neighboring nations working to strengthen their electoral systems.

John Dramani Mahama is now set to return as President on January 7, 2025, after defeating Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia in the elections. Official results from the Electoral Commission show Mahama secured 56% of the votes, while Bawumia received 41%.

This result ends the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) eight-year rule under Akufo-Addo, whose administration faced significant economic challenges, including a debt crisis and IMF intervention.

The peaceful elections and transition of power are seen as a major step toward fostering regional cooperation and encouraging other ECOWAS countries to deepen their democratic practices.

  • Akufo-Addo is not arrogant – Miracles Aboagye

Akufo-Addo is not arrogant – Miracles Aboagye

Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Miracles Denis Aboagye, has disputed the claim that outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is arrogant.

Some Ghanaians have criticised the president and some of his officials for displaying arrogance during his second term, citing instances where he was accused of disrespecting traditional leaders and ignoring advice from Civil Society Organisations (CSOs).

However, during an appearance on Newsfile on Joy News on Saturday, December 14, Mr. Aboagye argued against this view.

He described the president as a humble person, stating that if some of his responses to criticism are perceived negatively, it doesn’t mean he is arrogant.

Based on his own experience, Aboagye described President Akufo-Addo as approachable and friendly, rejecting the label of arrogance.

“Akufo-Addo, by his persona and demeanour, may appear arrogant if you are watching him from afar.

But anyone who has worked with him, like the CSOs and even you, Samson, will disagree and say he is not arrogant,” he told Joy News’ Samson Lardy Anyenini on the show.

“I have worked with him as a presidential staffer, and I don’t think he is anywhere near arrogance. He is, however, a very firm person. He will say it as it is, and if he has a disagreement with you, he will express it directly. Such interactions can sometimes misrepresent who he really is.”

He emphasised, “These are individual perspectives, so Akufo-Addo is not arrogant.”

When discussing whether his alleged arrogance contributed to the NPP’s defeat in the election, Mr Aboagye expressed disbelief. He said the party would focus on reworking its approach to regain power in 2028.

“We need to work with our people to help them understand the circumstances under which their concerns and sentiments arose. Secondly, we must learn from this experience,” he said.

2024 elections: Ghanaians rejected an oppressive govt – Ahmed Ibrahim

Member of Parliament for Banda, Ahmed Ibrahim, has stated that the results of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections reflect the people’s rejection of a government that caused hardship for its citizens.

He argued that Ghanaians voted out the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) because it became indifferent to the struggles of the people, acted recklessly, and ignored their concerns.

According to Ibrahim, the government’s failure to address the worsening living conditions led to widespread dissatisfaction, which was clearly reflected in the election results.

He shared these views during an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5 FM’s Frontline program.

The lawmaker said, “First, I want to thank God for this victory and extend my gratitude to the people of Ghana for the massive endorsement they have given the NDC.

I am glad they chose good over evil. The Bible even states that he who knows good and chooses evil has sinned. So, this victory is divine.

We urged Ghanaians to assess their situation and vote accordingly, and clearly, they did. This outcome is unprecedented. The results of the elections will serve as a lesson to politicians: if you neglect and deprive the people, they will vote against you in a decisive manner.”

He further emphasised that the results place a significant responsibility on the incoming Mahama-led administration, making it imperative not to fail the Ghanaian people.

“I see this massive endorsement from the Ghanaian people as divine intervention from God. Nana Akufo-Addo’s core objective was to sell Ghana to his family. What was happening under his leadership was state capture—an attempt to treat the country as a private entity.

“However, Ghanaians prayed against it, and because God was also against it, He allowed the people to vote them out of power in such a decisive manner. The policy of state capture was not from God, and so He dismantled it and gave the NDC an absolute majority,” he concluded.

    Appiah-Kubi blames Akufo-Addo, Ofori-Atta for NPP’s shocking 2024 election defeat

Outgoing Member of Parliament for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has blamed President Nana Akufo-Addo’s leadership decisions for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) shocking defeat in the December 7, 2024, general elections.

The NPP suffered a heavy loss, with its Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, conceding even before official results were declared. John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured a decisive victory, becoming President-elect and leading the NDC to an absolute majority in Parliament with over 190 seats.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Upfront, Appiah-Kubi argued that the NPP’s troubles began when President Akufo-Addo failed to heed calls from Members of Parliament to dismiss the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

“The blame will go by extension because he [President Akufo-Addo] refused to listen to us. Even when we saw the reality and tried to communicate it to him, he wouldn’t accept anything of the sort,” Appiah-Kubi said.

He further criticized the President’s leadership style, describing him as “too recalcitrant” and asserting that his decisions undermined Dr. Bawumia’s chances in the presidential race.

“He [Akufo-Addo] didn’t do enough to help Dr. Bawumia because if you won’t listen to your own MPs… It was not just one person speaking. We were advocating with the support of more than 96 Members of Parliament,” he added.

Appiah-Kubi, who also lost his parliamentary seat to an independent candidate, questioned the President’s judgment and responsiveness to valid concerns. According to him, Akufo-Addo’s refusal to act on a collective resolution from MPs demonstrated a significant lapse in leadership.

“It’s not as though one person was saying something unwarranted. We had written our resolution, and because we didn’t have other opportunities, we wanted him to hear us. Yet, he refused to listen to any of us. That’s why we can blame him for this outcome,” Appiah-Kubi concluded.

Outgoing MP for Asante Akim North in the Ashanti Region, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has blamed the NPP’s poor performance in the December 7, 2024 elections on decisions made by President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The NPP faced a significant defeat, with its presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, conceding before the Electoral Commission officially declared results. John Mahama, the NDC’s candidate, emerged victorious and is set to return as President, with his party also securing a majority in Parliament.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Upfront, Appiah-Kubi pointed out that the party’s problems worsened when President Akufo-Addo refused to remove former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, despite calls from NPP MPs. He added that the President’s failure to address critical issues within the party hurt Dr. Bawumia’s chances in the election.

“The blame will go by extension because he [President Akufo-Addo] refused to listen to us. Even when we saw the reality and tried to communicate it to him, he wouldn’t accept anything of the sort,” Appiah-Kubi said.

He further criticized the President’s approach, describing him as “too recalcitrant,” which he claimed contributed to the party’s defeat.

Return all govt vehicles by January 2025 – Akufo-Addo orders appointees

President Nana Akufo-Addo has directed all outgoing Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, and other political appointees to return official government vehicles by Friday, January 3, 2025, as his administration comes to an end.

The Office of the President emphasized that the longstanding directive, first issued at the end of President Akufo-Addo’s first term in 2020, “remains in full effect” as the President’s second and final term draws to a close.

Unlike past administrations that allowed political appointees to purchase one official saloon vehicle through valuation by the State Transport Company Ltd., President Akufo-Addo has reiterated that “this practice will not be applicable under his administration.”

The directive applies to all political appointees, including Ministers, Deputy Ministers, Regional Ministers, Special Assistants, Special Aides to the President and Vice President, and individuals serving as Chairpersons or Members of Statutory Boards and Corporations under the Presidential Office Act, 1993 (Act 463).

“No official vehicle shall be acquired by any appointee of the current administration as the term concludes,” the statement emphasized.

The Office of the President has instructed appointees to return all government vehicles in their possession to the Chief Directors of their respective Ministries by the stated deadline.

The directive, according to the Presidency, underscores President Akufo-Addo’s “commitment to accountability and the responsible management of state resources.”

The Office expressed confidence that all appointees will comply fully with this measure and ensure a smooth transition as the administration concludes its term.

President Akufo-Addo has pledged his commitment to ensuring a seamless transition for President-elect John Mahama as he prepares to assume office.

Speaking ahead of a meeting at the Jubilee House on Wednesday, which focused on the inauguration of a joint transitional team, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the need for a smooth process that protects the interests of Ghanaians.

The President told journalists, “to assure him of my full support and that of my government over the transitional process to make sure that this administration takes off in the best of conditions.”

President-elect John Mahama, in response, expressed his appreciation and reiterated the importance of collaboration during and beyond the transition period. “I’m happy at the assurance he has given us that we’re going to work together in the interest of Ghana to ensure a seamless transition, and I believe that even after that transition, it will be necessary for us to continue to keep a channel of communication so that Ghana’s democratic credentials are consolidated and we all work together in the national interest,” he stated.

The president-elect, John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated his dedication to a seamless and cooperative transition of power.

He has expressed his admiration for President Akufo-Addo and his administration’s efforts.

While addressing the formation of the National Transition Team at the Accra International Conference Centre, Mahama assured that he would fully support and collaborate with President Akufo-Addo to ensure a smooth handover.

Akufo-Addo’s conduct does not warrant ex-president status – Adam Bonaa

Security analyst Dr. Adam Bonaa has proposed that President Akufo-Addo’s name should be excluded from the list of Ghana’s former presidents when he leaves office on January 7, 2025.

During a discussion on TV3’s Ghana Decides 2024 programme, which was followed by Ghanaweb, Dr. Bonaa explained that the President’s behavior while in office does not deserve recognition among the country’s past leaders.

“If it is possible, let us expunge Nana Addo’s name from the list of ex-presidents if he becomes one. Listen, what Nana Addo has done to this country… I am old enough to have witnessed many of the coups that took place in this country, but we never experienced some of the things that happened under Nana Addo. And yet, we had takeovers here and there.

“This means we have come far, Nana was instructing chiefs to get up and greet him, doing all manner of things, and you ask yourself, ‘Where did we go wrong?’ What has taken place… a lot of my friends in the NPP are so disappointed. It is because of Nana Addo’s bad, irresponsible, reckless, and looting government that we find ourselves where we are,” he added.

President Akufo-Addo assumed the presidency in 2017 after winning the 2016 election in the first round, having previously run in the 2008 and 2012 elections.

He will step down on January 7, 2025, just before John Mahama is inaugurated as the new president.

We are declaring war on galamsey – IGP orders Regional Commanders

Inspector General of Police (IGP) COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno has vowed to intensify the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, warning that it poses a severe risk to national security and environmental sustainability.

Addressing the Regional Police Commanders’ Conference, COP Yohuno highlighted the escalating dangers of illegal mining, particularly in the Western North region.

He noted that criminal groups engaged in these activities have carried out violent attacks on civilians and forest guards, creating a climate of fear and lawlessness.

“This lawlessness must not be allowed to continue” he said.

The IGP emphasized that galamsey operations have not only devastated the environment but have also contributed to rising criminal activities.

He pointed out that security personnel attempting to curb the menace have been met with hostility, further complicating enforcement efforts.

To tackle the crisis, COP Yohuno directed all regional commanders to ramp up enforcement efforts and adopt a unified strategy to dismantle illegal mining networks.

“We are declaring war on illegal mining, and I expect every regional commander to take decisive action, to bring perpetrators to justice,” he concluded.

The renewed commitment from the police leadership comes amid growing calls from the public and environmental groups for stronger action against galamsey.

With this directive, the security services are expected to intensify efforts to protect Ghana’s natural resources and restore order in affected communities.

Delivering a poignant speech from Jubilee House on the eve of the 2024 general elections, the President underlined the election’s importance, describing it as a crucial step in Ghana’s democratic progress and a significant chapter in the country’s history.
