  • Mahama built hospitals in Accra; Akufo-Addo is building one in every district – Ofosu Nkansah

Mahama built hospitals in Accra; Akufo-Addo is building one in every district – Ofosu Nkansah

Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship & Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has drawn a sharp contrast between the health infrastructure efforts of President Akufo-Addo and former President John Dramani Mahama.

According to Nkansah, the current administration’s Agenda 111 project demonstrates an unprecedented commitment to equitable healthcare delivery across Ghana.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, November 28, Nkansah commended President Akufo-Addo for pursuing an ambitious vision of building hospitals in every district, describing it as a game-changer in national development.

He criticized former President Mahama’s approach, claiming it was concentrated in the Greater Accra Region at the expense of the rest of the country. “On which President did better with providing Health Infrastructure, President Akufo-Addo has ensured every District is getting a hospital, whereas Fmr. Prez Mahama built 3 or 4 big hospitals in Greater Accra, if we even grant him UGMC, which is a Prez Mills project,” Nkansah stated.

He argued that the comparison between the two leaders in terms of healthcare development is clear, emphasizing that President Akufo-Addo’s focus on district-level healthcare facilities reflects a broader, more inclusive strategy.

“Some people in Accra will draw conclusions based on 4 facilities in Gt. Accra when one president is touching every part of the country. The difference is not even close,” he added.

  • You should be preparing your soul for heaven; stop lying – Mahama to Akufo-Addo over ‘dumsor’

You should be preparing your soul for heaven; stop lying – Mahama to Akufo-Addo over ‘dumsor’

Former President John Mahama has descended heavily on President Akufo-Addo over claims that intermittent power outages (dumsor) were not resolved before he left office.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, in a recent address claimed that, unlike other past presidents who are remembered for their significant contributions, Mr. Mahama’s legacy is tied to “Dumsor” — the frequent power outages that plagued his administration.

During the commissioning of the Sekyere Afram Plains District Hospital in Drobonso on Monday, 25th November, he said: “If he couldn’t maintain a 12-hour power supply during his presidency, how can he promise a 24-hour economy? Stop the lies,” he stated.

In a rebuttal, the former president referenced Proverbs 19:9, encouraging the president to desist from lying and focus on preparing himself for heaven as liar would not be allowed access to God’s kingdom.

“You know, liars cannot go to heaven. And let me give you a Bible quotation, Proverbs Chapter 19:9, he said, those who bear false witness will not go unpunished and the liars will be destroyed. If you lie, you will not go to heaven. At his age, he should be preparing his soul for heaven. So if you stop lying.”

He added, “I expect that when NPP is telling lies, they’ll leave it to the younger ones and the junior ones to do. But when the senior ones like Nana Akufo-Addo says that Dumsor was not solved before we came, I heard him say that if we could not keep the lights on, how can we run 24-hour economy. In 2016 dumsor had been solved. Nobody’s lights went off in 2016 nobody had load shedding in 2016 that is on record,” he responded.

I wouldn’t have become president without your support – Akufo-Addo to Asantehene

President Akufo-Addo has expressed his deep appreciation to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, and the chiefs of Asanteman for their unwavering support throughout his presidency.

On Tuesday, November 27, 2024, Akufo-Addo visited the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi to personally thank the Asantehene and the chiefs as his term nears its conclusion.

He acknowledged that his presidency would not have been possible without the backing of Asanteman, highlighting their significant role in his achievements.

The president particularly lauded the Asantehene for his instrumental role in resolving the longstanding Dagbon chieftaincy dispute, a resolution that occurred under Akufo-Addo’s leadership.

He further noted that this peace had allowed him to be installed as a Dagomba chief.

“If not for Asanteman, I would not have become president. I’m eternally grateful for all the help you gave me during my tenure as president. There are a lot of things you have done for me, some of which I can’t mention in public. But there are some I have to mention, like the Dagbon chieftaincy conflict. The conflict had been raging for about 15 years when I came in, with nobody being able to resolve it.

“President Kufuor appointed you as the chairman of the committee for you to look into the conflict together with the Yagbonwura and Nayiri, and it was during my tenure that it was resolved. I know that if not for your leadership, this would not have happened, and I’m also very grateful for this,” he stated.

He added, “Because of the work you did at Dagbon, I have been given a stool there – I’m a Dagomba chief.”

The traditional leaders warmly welcomed the President, affectionately referring to him as their “Precious President.” They expressed gratitude for his efforts in advancing the region’s development throughout his tenure.

“‘Nana, you have done a lot. Nana, you have done well.’ Your contribution to education is unparalleled. The number of children who have had the chance to get secondary education. How can we forget. We know that it’s constitutional for you to leave, otherwise we would have wanted you to stay in office,” one chief said, lauding the Free Senior High School initiative and its transformative impact.

Highlighting other achievements, the traditional leaders also praised the President for improving infrastructure in the region.

4 District Hospitals commissioned by Akufo-Addo in Ashanti Region

On Monday, November 25, 2024, President Akufo-Addo inaugurated four of the five newly completed 40-bed district hospitals in the Ashanti region.

These hospitals, located in Drobonso (Sekyere Afram Plains), Sabronum (Ahafo Ano South East), Twedie (Atwima Kwanwoma), and Suame (Suame Municipal), are part of the government’s extensive healthcare development program. A fifth hospital, situated in Manso Nkwanta (Amansie West District), has also been completed but awaits commissioning.

The initiative began in 2020 when Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang-Manu launched the construction of twelve 40-bed hospitals across the Ashanti, Eastern, and Greater Accra regions, along with a polyclinic in Mim, Brong Ahafo. VAMED Engineering GmbH of Austria handled the construction of these facilities, with other hospitals built in Jumapo, Kwabeng, Nkwatia, Achiase, Adukrom, Mim, and Kpone Katamanso.

To fund the project, a €71.5 million loan was secured from Erste Group Bank AG and Česká Spořitelna a.s., which also included the development of housing for healthcare staff—12 two-bedroom semi-detached units at each hospital.

Each facility is well-equipped with essential medical departments such as Outpatient Departments, Public Health facilities, and patient care areas including surgical suites, maternity wards, paediatric wards, and recovery rooms.

In his remarks, President Akufo-Addo encouraged local communities and hospital staff to ensure these new healthcare facilities are well-managed and maintained. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to improving healthcare infrastructure and expanding access to quality health services throughout the country.

  • Mahama has a dumsor history; he can’t sustain 24-hour economy – Akufo-Addo

    Mahama has a dumsor history; he can’t sustain 24-hour economy – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has labeled the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama a failed president, asserting that Mahama is the only former leader whose tenure was marked by poor performance, preventing him from remaining in office.

Akufo-Addo noted that while previous presidents are remembered for their substantial contributions to the country, Mahama’s legacy is primarily defined by “Dumsor,” the ongoing power crises during his administration.

The President also took issue with the NDC’s proposal for a “24-hour economy,” raising doubts about how their flagbearer, John Mahama, would be able to implement such a policy effectively.

“If he could not keep the lights on for 12 hours during his tenure as president, how can he sustain a 24-hour economy? Stop that lies,” he remarked, labelling the policy as deceitful.

While speaking at the inauguration of the Sekyere Afram Plains District Hospital in Drobonso on Monday, November 25, President Akufo-Addo praised the success of the Free SHS policy, calling it a transformative development for the education sector.

He highlighted that many students who were once unable to access secondary education are now enrolled and benefiting from the policy.

In closing, the President urged the public to vote for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stressing that he is the ideal candidate to carry on his legacy.

“My Vice will take over the projects that we couldn’t complete. Before I assumed office, over 1,000 BECE candidates were not able to access secondary education, due to lack of finances. Over ten years, one million young Ghanaians were not able to access secondary education.

“In parts of the world, the government pay school fees of young people. We also decided that Ghana could do the same. That’s why we introduced the Free SHS policy, eight hundred thousand students were in SHS, and now, the number has doubled to 1.6 million. 5.7 million young Ghanaians have benefitted from the SHS policy.

“Please two people are contesting the presidency, one of them was not allowed to continue his term because he failed. All the other presidents were offered the second term, but this particular one  [Mahama] was booted out. Mahama is noted for Dumsor, how can such a person lead Ghana again?

  • Bawumia is a leader you can trust because he has never lied to me – Akufo-Addo

Bawumia is a leader you can trust because he has never lied to me – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reaffirmed his unwavering trust in Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, stating that he has always been truthful throughout their shared political journey.

Speaking in Kumasi, the President urged voters to support Dr. Bawumia, emphasizing that they should not return to the leadership of John Dramani Mahama, who he described as a failed president seeking a comeback.

President Akufo-Addo emphasized that Dr. Bawumia is well-equipped for leadership and deserves the opportunity to lead, as his vision has the potential to improve Ghana significantly.

“Bawumia has never lied to me since working with me. I trust him, and Ghanaians must trust him too. I know him, and he will deliver. Bawumia is an honest man who can continue my good works; no other person can do that because it’s not in their DNA to do that”, he rallied the electorate.

This is not the first time the President has reiterated his confidence in the NPP flagbearer in managing the country’s affairs if voted for.

It would be recalled that in October this year, while visiting Wa in the Upper West Region, President Akufo-Addo commended Bawumia’s commitment, having worked alongside him for nearly two decades in various capacities, including as vice president.

The President emphasised his confidence in Bawumia’s loyalty and abilities, stating that he has never doubted his vice president’s dedication to serving the nation.

He noted that Bawumia’s track record and experience make him the ideal candidate to continue the NPP’s developmental agenda.

President Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to vote for Bawumia in the 2024 general elections, describing him as a leader who embodies loyalty, commitment, and a clear vision for the country’s future.

“In the nearly 20 years that I have been working with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, I have not had one day, one occasion to doubt his loyalty, to doubt his commitment to our common goal. And I have come here to ask for your support to make Bawumia break the 8.”

“I see that the former President is saying all kinds of things about the number 8 he chose. That it means he is going to win. Breaking the 8 and having the number 8, that is not a good sign at all,” he said.

Galamsey fight still my priority – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his administration’s determination to combat illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, highlighting its destructive effects on water bodies, farmlands, and the environment.

Speaking at the first-ever graduation ceremony of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in Somanya, Eastern Region, the President outlined strategies to address the menace, including the adoption of responsible mining practices, community collaboration, and advanced technologies such as drone surveillance.

He emphasized the critical role of education and skilled professionals in advancing sustainable solutions to these environmental challenges.

“We are living in a world that demands urgent action. The impact of climate change is no longer a distant threat. It is here with us. Rising temperatures, erratic rainfall, depleting water resources, deforestation, and biodiversity loss are all stark reminders of the need to rethink how we live and interact with our environment.

“The establishment of UESD was a deliberate response to these challenges. This university is strategically positioned to produce experts, researchers, and innovators who can address environmental, social, and economic sustainability.

President Akufo-Addo also underscored the broader context of climate change, calling for urgent action to mitigate its impact.

“From renewable energy to sustainable agriculture, waste management to climate policy, UESD graduates are equipped to lead the charge in transforming Ghana into a global example of sustainable development.”

The President highlighted UESD’s mission to develop experts in fields ranging from renewable energy to sustainable agriculture, waste management, and climate policy.

He commended the university for equipping its graduates with the knowledge and tools to lead Ghana’s transition towards sustainable development and serve as a model for global environmental stewardship.

In his remarks, he stressed the importance of balancing environmental preservation with economic growth to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

“From the threat of environmental degradation through illegal mining to the alarming southward movement of terrorism from the Sahel towards our borders, the challenges are complex and multifaceted.”

He added, “The armed forces must thus remain vigilant, adaptable, and prepared to confront these evolving threats with resolve. It is in this context that my government has embarked on the progressive expansion of the armed forces, ensuring a military presence across all 16 regions of our nation.”

During the ceremony at the Grand Arena, Accra International Conference Centre (AICC), President Akufo-Addo praised healthcare workers for their unwavering commitment and vital role in the nation’s healthcare system.

The President pointed out that under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration, several initiatives have been implemented to strengthen the health sector, despite significant challenges. These measures include community health service programs, improvements in the primary healthcare network, and the expansion of services to remote areas.

Akufo-Addo must apologise for destroying the economy, not me – Man who scowled at president

The young Ghanaian man, who became the center of attention after giving President Nana Akufo-Addo a stern, piercing look during the funeral rites of Akyempimhene Oheneba Adusei Poku in Kumasi on November 18, has broken his silence.

In a recent video, the man noted that he had been cautioned and instigated to apologise to the president for his action.

The reason behind the man’s scowling eyes is clear. He is dissatisfied with the running of the economy by the president. In his video, the man noted he finds no fault with his actions and would not apologise.

He rather noted that President Akufo-Addo must apologise to Ghanaians for failing to execute his promises and make their lives better.

In the previous video gone viral, the unidentified man is seen fixing his gaze on the president as he passed by, maintaining his intense expression until his attention was taken by an unknown individual.

The incident comes at a time of heightened public dissatisfaction with the current administration, with many Ghanaians blaming President Akufo-Addo for the country’s ongoing economic challenges. Rising inflation, mounting public debt, soaring food and transportation costs, and the perceived lack of significant developmental projects have led to widespread criticism of the government.

The funeral, held in Kumasi, attracted a host of prominent dignitaries, including Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, government officials, and business mogul Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II struggled to hold back tears during the final rites of the late Akyempimhene.

  • Ghana’s provisional GDP growth reaches 6.9% in second quarter of 2024 – Akufo-Addo

Ghana’s provisional GDP growth reaches 6.9% in second quarter of 2024 – Akufo-Addo

Ghana’s economy is showing remarkable resilience and growth, with recent data from the Bank of Ghana painting a promising picture.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, speaking at an event, shared the impressive news of the nation’s economic progress.

According to the President, Ghana’s provisional GDP growth for the second quarter of 2024 reached an impressive 6.9%, showcasing the economy’s strength.

““Recent data from the Bank of Ghana paints a picture of resilience and promise,” the President declared, noting that Ghana’s provisional GDP growth reached an impressive 6.9% during this period.” he remarked.

The growth, he explained, was driven by strong performances in construction, industry, agriculture, consumer spending, and tourism. These sectors contributed significantly to the economy’s positive momentum.

Highlighting another achievement, President Akufo-Addo pointed to non-oil GDP growth, which stood at 7.0%, underscoring the strength of the country’s economic fundamentals.

“This demonstrates the dynamism of the Ghanaian economy and reinforces our confidence in its future potential,” he made this statement when he commissioned the magnificent edifice serving as the new headquarters of the Bank of Ghana at Ridge, Accra

President Akufo-Addo explained that this milestone was the result of six decades of increasing demands and the evolving complexity of the Bank’s operations. He noted that the old headquarters, though rich in historical value, could no longer meet the institution’s needs.

He said, “This new complex, built by Ghanaian architectural powerhouse GoldKey Properties under the leadership of Kwaku Bediako, signals a transformative era for the Bank of Ghana.”

The project was crafted by Ghana’s globally recognized architect, David Adjaye.

The commissioning of the Bank Square marks a significant step toward a broader vision of progress, reflecting Ghana’s aspirations to establish itself as a leading financial hub in the region.

Equipped with world-class facilities, the new headquarters will strengthen the Bank’s capacity to implement reforms, improve regulatory frameworks, and attract investments.

President Akufo-Addo expressed his appreciation to Governor Ernest Addison, Deputy Governors Maxwell Opoku-Afari and Elsie Awadzi, as well as the entire staff of the Bank of Ghana, for their professionalism and commitment.

He also praised the architects, engineers, and contractors whose creativity and expertise brought this iconic structure to life.

“Recent data from the Bank of Ghana paints a picture of resilience and promise,” President Akufo-Addo declared. He highlighted that Ghana’s provisional GDP growth reached an impressive 6.9% in the second quarter of 2024. This growth, driven by robust performances across construction, industry, agriculture, consumer demand, and tourism, demonstrates the dynamism of the Ghanaian economy. Non-oil GDP growth of 7.0% further reinforces the strength of the nation’s economic fundamentals.

One of the most notable achievements, the President said, is the sharp reduction in inflation. From a staggering 54.1% in 2022, inflation has dropped to 22.1% as of October 2024, thanks to the effective monetary policies implemented by the Bank of Ghana. This progress has brought relief to households and businesses, renewing confidence in the economic stability of the country.

On the external front, Ghana recorded a trade surplus of $2.78 billion, buoyed by robust gold and crude oil exports. The nation’s international reserves stand at $7.5 billion, providing a critical buffer against external shocks. President Akufo-Addo attributed these achievements to the prudent stewardship of the Bank of Ghana, emphasizing its indispensable role in navigating global uncertainties and fostering economic growth.

Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adams has stated that Ghana’s economy is recovering steadily and that growth has even exceeded the target.

Dr. Mohammed Amin Adams stated this during the commissioning of the state-of-the-art new headquarters of the Bank of Ghana at Ridge.

He also enumerated the investments the government has made in infrastructure and human development.

He said, “I can report, Mr. President, that you have steered this economy to strong recovery—the economy is getting stronger and stronger by the day under your leadership.” The Finance Minister added, “Macroeconomic stability is returning faster; growth has exceeded the target, and you’ve invested heavily in infrastructure and human development… and we also know that the banks are posting strong performances across key financial ratios.”

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, said that he is glad the construction of the new headquarters of the Bank of Ghana has been accomplished during his tenure, in spite of the challenges, which included land litigation.

Speaking at the opening of the Bank Square at Ridge, Accra, Dr. Addison noted that the headquarters is not only a physical structure but serves as a national legacy.

According to him, the new BoG headquarters, which begins operations today, will house more than 2,000 staff and has several state-of-the-art features.

  • New BoG headquarters symbolizes the progress of our economy – Akufo-Addo

New BoG headquarters symbolizes the progress of our economy – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has described the newly commissioned Bank of Ghana (BoG) headquarters, “The Bank Square,” as a testament to Ghana’s economic progress and resilience.

The 22-storey edifice, located at Ridge in Accra, comprises three main blocks: the Tower, Urban, and Amenities Blocks, including basements, podiums, and ancillary facilities.

Speaking at the commissioning, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the building’s significance as a symbol of the country’s economic recovery and the effectiveness of monetary policies.

“And as we stand here today, we are not only celebrating the physical structure of this imposing complex, we are also acknowledging the progress of our economy, which this edifice symbolizes,” he said.

The President cited data from the BoG to highlight the strides Ghana has made in economic recovery.

    https://twitter.com/Channel1TVGHA/status/1859213195350581607/photo/1

“Recent data from the Bank of Ghana paints a picture of resilience and promise. Ghana’s economy is on a recovery trajectory,” he stated. “The provisional GDP growth of 6.9% recorded in the second quarter of 2024 was driven by robust performances across all sectors. Non-Oil GDP growth of 7%, a testament to the dynamism of our economy.”

He further noted the sharp drop in inflation from 54.1% in December 2022 to 22.1% in October 2024 as evidence of effective monetary policy interventions.

“There is every indication that the downward trend of inflation will continue. Evidence in the reducing prices of foodstuff and petroleum prices brings a sense of optimism for the future,” he added.

BoG Governor Dr. Ernest Addison, in his remarks, described “The Bank Square” as a key step in modernizing the central bank’s operations, enhancing employee wellness, and promoting sustainability.

“The Bank Square was designed with the future in mind and stands as one of the most important modern civic landmarks in the city of Accra and the country,” he said.

Dr. Addison also emphasized the edifice’s role in solidifying Ghana’s position as a financial leader in Africa.

“By commissioning this product of the imagination of an internationally celebrated architect, Sir David Adjaye, a proud son of Ghana, we are boldly affirming our commitment to investing in the nation’s future. His architectural firm, Adjaye Associates, has created this enduring masterpiece—one designed to withstand the test of time and serve as a beacon of Ghana’s revitalization for generations to come.”

    Controversies and Public Scrutiny

The $250 million project, which began in 2019 following a directive from the BoG Board during its 662nd Regular Meeting, has faced significant criticism. The Minority in Parliament, led by Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga, raised concerns over the project’s cost escalation, alleging a lack of approval from the Public Procurement Authority (PPA). Ayariga submitted a formal petition to the Office of the Special Prosecutor for investigation.

Although the status of the investigation remains unclear, the facility’s commissioning marks a milestone for Ghana’s financial sector. According to President Akufo-Addo, the edifice reflects progress in economic indicators and a commitment to building a resilient and dynamic economy.

Akufo-Addo inaugurates $1.2bn Bridge Power Plant to boost economic growth

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has inaugurated the Bridge Power Plant in Tema, a $1.2 billion project, marking a pivotal moment for Ghana’s energy sector and its broader economic growth.

This state-of-the-art 590-megawatt combined-cycle plant, developed in collaboration with Early Power Ltd. and Endeavour Energy, stands as one of the largest and most advanced power generation facilities in the country.

The launch of this plant realizes a goal first set in April 2017 when construction began, demonstrating Ghana’s dedication to integrating modern technology and innovative energy solutions to meet the country’s increasing electricity needs.

“Today, we celebrate a transformative step forward in our journey toward energy independence. Reliable power is the backbone of development, and this facility is proof that Ghana is ready to overcome the challenges of the past and embrace a brighter future,” President Akufo-Addo said during the ceremony.

The President reflected on the difficult times of “dumsor” (persistent power outages) under the previous government, which caused significant disruptions to both daily life and businesses nationwide.

He reassured Ghanaians that the Bridge Power Plant would deliver a reliable power supply, easing the pressure on the national grid and tackling the energy shortfalls that previously hindered the country’s economic development.

“This plant is more than a source of power; it is a beacon of hope and a testament to what we can achieve through strategic partnerships and a clear vision,” he remarked.

The Bridge Power Plant is designed to integrate seamlessly into Ghana’s energy mix, providing efficient and environmentally sustainable electricity. Its cutting-edge technology ensures lower carbon emissions, aligning with the government’s commitment to a greener future.

President Akufo-Addo highlighted the plant’s potential to drive industrial growth by supplying reliable power to factories, hospitals, schools, and households. The facility will also support rural electrification efforts, bringing electricity to remote areas and improving the quality of life for underserved communities.

“The power generated here will fuel an industrial revolution, create jobs, attract foreign investment, and lay the foundation for sustained economic growth,” he added.

The President praised Endeavour Energy and its partners for their steadfast commitment to the project, while also recognizing the invaluable contributions of Ghanaian engineers and workers who played a vital role in the plant’s completion.

Looking forward, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his government’s dedication to resolving financial challenges in the energy sector and reinforcing partnerships with Independent Power Producers (IPPs). He urged all stakeholders to collaborate in maintaining the facility and advancing Ghana’s energy goals.

The launch of the Bridge Power Plant represents a key milestone in Ghana’s energy evolution. It ushers in a new era of resilience, sustainability, and growth, signaling the end of energy shortages and laying the foundation for a brighter future.

“This plant stands as a symbol of what Ghana can achieve when united by a shared purpose. It is with immense pride that I declare the Bridge Power Plant officially commissioned,” President Akufo-Addo concluded.

Once operational, the new flyover will alleviate traffic congestion between the northern and southern sections of the Tema Motorway.

The commissioning is anticipated to enhance travel between areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema, ultimately improving the quality of life for residents in these regions.

The project includes an 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct with asphaltic concrete surfacing, a 140-meter ramp from Shiashie onto the viaduct heading towards Airport Hills, and an 80-meter ramp from the viaduct onto the Motorway towards Tema.

Moreover, the interchange features a new road through the former tunnel at East Legon, an additional 200 meters of road connecting Cantonments from the Giffard Road interchange, a redesign of the Flower Pot roundabout and its approaches, pedestrian walkways on both sides of the flyover, as well as road infrastructure like streetlights, road markings, and traffic signals.

  • Akufo-Addo enjoyed benefits of economic decisions taken by Mahama – Pablo

Akufo-Addo enjoyed benefits of economic decisions taken by Mahama – Pablo

National Youth Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Opare Addo, popularly known as Pablo, has criticized the performance of the Akufo-Addo administration, claiming it benefited from the economic policies implemented by former President John Mahama.

Speaking on Nhyira FM’s Kuro Yi Mu Nsem show with Barima Kofi Dawson, Mr. Opare Addo attributed Ghana’s impressive economic performance in 2017 and 2018 to the policies of John Mahama and the IMF program initiated during his tenure.

“John Mahama’s 2017 budget sustained our economy to the end of 2017 through to 2018. Under President Mahama, the economy performed better, but under Akufo-Addo, it has worsened. This is because the NDC entered the IMF program just before leaving office. The benefits of this program and other economic policies by Mahama were supposed to be realized from 2017, which Akufo-Addo came to enjoy and even extended to look like he is managing the economy well. Today, he is the worst manager of our economy,” Opare Addo remarked.

Pablo argued that the true state of the economy under President Akufo-Addo should be assessed from 2019, after Ghana exited the IMF program. He pointed out the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the US dollar and its impact on businesses, describing the current economic situation as dire.

“They promised to stabilize the cedi with their economic messiah, Dr. Bawumia. Now, the dollar is 17 cedis. Many businesses have collapsed; you import something today, and tomorrow the dollar has increased, and you need more cedis to import that same thing again. In 2016, 10 cedis bought kenkey with fish, and 20 cedis made fufu for the family. Today, those amounts don’t go as far, with cement now costing 110 cedis. No wonder Ghanaians are angry,” he stated.

Touching on high food inflation, Pablo attributed the worsening cost of living to the government’s mismanagement, which he believes has angered many Ghanaians.

On the issue of the Free Senior High School policy, Mr. Opare Addo acknowledged its importance and emphasized that the NDC would improve its implementation if it returns to power.

“No government can cancel Free SHS; we must fix its flaws to improve it, and that’s what the NDC is advocating for,” he asserted.

Bawumia never asked for my endorsement – Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has appealed to Ghanaians to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the December elections, expressing confidence in his leadership to drive the nation’s progress.

During a live broadcast with top journalists, Kufuor responded to a question from Kwame Adinkra of Pure FM about why he believes Bawumia is the right choice for Ghana’s presidency.

Speaking calmly but with conviction, Kufuor praised Bawumia’s achievements as an economist and his tenure as Vice President under Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.

“Dr. Bawumia’s understanding of economics and his innovative policies have made him stand out. His leadership ideologies align with the aspirations of every Ghanaian. I firmly believe he has what it takes to elevate this country,” Kufuor stated.

The former president clarified that his endorsement was entirely his own decision, not influenced by Bawumia.

Kufuor also urged Ghanaians to participate actively in the elections, stressing the importance of high voter turnout to ensure every voice is heard.

“He hasn’t made me a spokesperson or lobbied me to speak for him. My advice is grounded in my own observations of the political landscape and my faith in his abilities,” Kufuor explained.

  • This is not the time to be unveiling statues of oneself – Naana Jane to Akufo-Addo

This is not the time to be unveiling statues of oneself – Naana Jane to Akufo-Addo

The Vice Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has criticized President Nana Akufo-Addo for unveiling a statue of himself in Takoradi amidst widespread economic hardship in the country.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, during a courtesy call on the Regent of Wungu, Sulemana Saka Adams, in the Walewale constituency as part of her campaign tour of the North East Region, described the act as unjustifiable, especially when many Ghanaians are struggling with poverty and skyrocketing prices of goods and services. She noted that women, in particular, bear the brunt of the economic difficulties under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government.

“The government has failed to create jobs for the youth, leading to high unemployment across the country,” she said, adding that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) under John Dramani Mahama would prioritize policies to ease economic hardships, including the 24-hour Economy, the Big Push initiative, Women’s Development Bank, and the National Apprenticeship Programme.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further urged Ghanaians to reject the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 7 elections, emphasizing that “the time to change is now.” She assured voters that an NDC government would reset the nation for the benefit of all Ghanaians.

President Akufo-Addo unveiled the statue on November 6 at the entrance of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi during his one-day “thank you” tour of the Western Region. Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah defended the statue as a tribute to the President’s contributions to the region, citing key projects such as the rehabilitation of the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital, the Sinohydro interchange, and the redevelopment of Takoradi Market Circle.

However, critics point out that many of these projects remain incomplete, fueling discontent among Ghanaians, particularly on social media. Some residents in the Sekondi-Takoradi area have even called for the removal of the statue, arguing that it is inappropriate given the country’s economic challenges.

  • Akufo-Addo’s incompetence is the root cause of Ghana’s problems – Martin Kpebu

Akufo-Addo’s incompetence is the root cause of Ghana’s problems – Martin Kpebu

Private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu has strongly criticized President Akufo-Addo’s administration, describing it as marked by severe shortcomings in governance.

Appearing on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, Kpebu linked the country’s ongoing challenges to a combination of constitutional flaws and leadership failures.

He argued that the president’s governance has deepened Ghana’s development struggles.

“We didn’t write the law well; let’s accept that, and we can redraft. After all, we all agree that this constitution is our biggest headache. It is the cause of our underdevelopment because it has weakened all our institutions, most especially when we get very bad leaders like Akufo-Addo,” he said on Friday, November 15.

While recognizing that past governments have had their issues, Kpebu stressed that Akufo-Addo’s leadership is unprecedented in its failures. “No previous administration has reached the low point that Akufo-Addo has set,” he remarked.

Mr Kpebu’s criticism comes amid widespread dissatisfaction over the state of the country’s economy.

The Ghanaian cedi continues to lose value against major currencies, severely impacting citizens’ purchasing power.

Inflation remains high, and many are struggling with the rising cost of living. Youth unemployment, which hit 13.9% in 2022 according to the World Bank, further exacerbates the economic strain.

The issue of illegal mining, or galamsey, remains another pressing concern. Despite government promises to tackle the problem, the devastation of the environment continues, and corruption within the sector has deepened public mistrust in state institutions.

In light of these issues, Kpebu emphasized the urgent need for constitutional reforms.

“I know the previous governments have not been good, but Akufo-Addo’s governance is the worst of them all.

“Akufo-Addo’s level of poor governance is at a dizzying height, and we have never seen any of its kind,” he stressed.

“We all agree that we need to work on this constitution; it has too many problems,” he stated.

  • IPG report shows unemployment situation under Akufo-Addo far better than Mahama

IPG report shows unemployment situation under Akufo-Addo far better than Mahama

Institute of Progressive Governance (IPG), a policy think tank, has urged former President John Dramani Mahama to refrain from misleading the public by claiming that unemployment rates were better under his administration than they are today.

Citing data from the World Bank and the Ghana Statistical Service, IPG clarified that the current unemployment situation is significantly improved compared to when Mr. Mahama was in office.

IPG referenced the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) criteria for defining unemployment, which applies to individuals aged 15 and above who (i) did not work at all during the reference week, (ii) are available for work, and (iii) are actively seeking employment. This ILO definition, known as the “narrow definition” of unemployment, is intended to allow for accurate comparison of unemployment rates across countries.

The think tank continued, “Unemployment rate is mathematically defined as the total number of the unemployed divided by the labour force and multiplied by 100%. Using this estimation with the data from the World Bank, the unemployment rate increased from 4.9% in 2006 to 5.4% in 2010. While the unemployment rate declined considerably to 2.2% in 2013, it unfortunately went up to 6.8% in 2015, the highest in over a decade!

“Even though President Mahama left the unemployment rate at 5.2% in 2016, the 6.8% unemployment rate registered under him as a president in 2015 still remains the highest since 2005! The average unemployment rate under Mr. Mahama as the president (from 2013 to 2016) is 4.65%!

IPG explained further that the highest unemployment rate under Akufo-Addo was 3.4%, which was recorded in 2017. This rate, however, declined marginally to 3.3% in 2018 and further to 3.2% in 2019 but went up to 3.3% in 2020 and was maintained at 3.3% in 2021 before declining to 3.1% in 2022 and repeating at 3.1% in 2023. Hence, the average unemployment rate in the last seven years (from 2017 to 2023) is 3.24%!

“It is therefore misleading for Mr. John Mahama to tell Ghanaians that unemployment rates recorded under Akufo-Addo are worse than those recorded under him as a president of Ghana. Mr. Mahama’s average unemployment rate of 4.65% is higher than Nana Akuffo Addo’s 3.24%!” IPG opined.

The think tank noted that the Ghana Statistical Service, in its recent surveys, has used a broad unemployment definition to estimate unemployment rates for the country.

“This definition relaxes the ILO’s condition of job chasing. The estimation is reasonable because Ghana’s hugely informal economy does not encourage job seekers to write applications or move from one office to the other in search of jobs. In reality, while many Ghanaian job seekers are not seeking jobs, most of them are available and ready to work.

While this measure provides a close reality to Ghana’s unemployment situation, it cannot be used to compare to the unemployment situations in other countries. It is purely for internal policy purposes, and IPG commends the Ghana Statistical Service for providing such additional information on the unemployment situation in the country,” they stated.

“Indeed, by using the broad measure of the unemployment rate, Ghana’s unemployment rate increased from 13.3% during the first quarter of 2022 to 14.9% in the third quarter of 2023 (see Ghana Statistical Service Report, February 2024, page 6).

“This does not mean that the unemployment rate of 5.2% (a narrow measure in 2016) left by Mr. Mahama is what has increased to 14.9% in 2023! No! That is wrong and misleading! Using the ILO’s measure (narrow measure), Ghana’s unemployment rate has declined from 5.2% in 2016 to 3.1% at the end of the third quarter of 2023,” IPG suggested.

In conclusion, IPG advised the campaign team of NDC to help Mr. John Dramani Mahama understand and appreciate technical issues before going public with them,” they added.

“The world would not take him seriously if he gets such elementary issues wrong!” IPG cautioned.

Akufo-Addo conferred with “Grand Officier de la Légion d’Honneur” title by Macron

The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been conferred with the prestigious title of Grand Officier de la Légion d’Honneur by the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron.

The award ceremony was held in Paris today after an official working lunch between President Macron and President Akufo-Addo to deepen the bond between France and Ghana.

The Grand Officier de la Légion d’Honneur is one of the highest ranks within France’s Légion d’Honneur, an order of merit established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte. It is awarded for outstanding military and civil service to the nation. Conferred by the President of France, it is one of the most revered symbols of French appreciation and respect.

The outgoing West African president was honoured for his role in strengthening Ghana’s relations with France, paving the way for increased cooperation on critical issues such as economic growth, climate action, education, and cultural exchange.

France’s relations with Ghana, which are historically less strong than with the Francophone countries of West Africa, have been growing in recent years, particularly with the presidential visit in 2017.

France and Ghana consult one another on West African security and political issues. The two countries are also in contact in the framework of the United Nations Security Council, where Ghana has been a non-permanent member since 1 January 2022, notably concerning the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine.

In January 2021, President Nana Akufo-Addo attended, alongside French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian, the inauguration of the Embassy of France in Accra, just after his inauguration for a second term.

The Ghanaian President also visited Paris in November 2021, on the sidelines of the Paris Peace Forum. He was also present, as Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, alongside the French President and the European Council President, Charles Michel, during the announcement of the re-organization of the French counter-terrorism disposition in West Africa.

In October 2022, President Akufo-Addo received an honorary doctorate from Paris-Panthéon Sorbonne University, in the presence, notably, of Minister of State Chrysoula Zacharopoulou. He also met the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna.

According to the Ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires Étrangères, as of January 2023, more than 70 French companies are currently present in Ghana, with investment stock of €1.3 billion, making it the seventh-largest destination for French foreign direct investment in Africa and the fourth-largest in ECOWAS.

The largest investment in the country is that of Bolloré, in partnership with Maersk, for the Tema seaport expansion project.

The Agence Française de Développement (AFD, French Development Agency) has an office in Accra and is active in various fields in the country, primarily through non-sovereign loans. The AFD has financed structural projects, like the Kumasi-Bolgatanga electrical line, which has enabled many Ghanaians to receive electricity, particularly in rural areas.

This line, tied in with the electrical interconnection between Ghana and Burkina Faso, was inaugurated by President Nana Akufo-Addo in October 2022. The AFD is also active in the north-west of the country in the development of irrigation networks, to help Ghanaian farmers improve yields. By providing several banks with the SUNREF credit line (€30 million), the AFD helps many SMEs finance investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency.

Collective efforts needed to fix climate crisis – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo called on world leaders to move past mere rhetoric and take decisive, tangible actions in the fight against the global climate crisis.

During the World Climate Leaders Summit at COP29 in Azerbaijan on Wednesday, November 13, he stressed the urgent need for effective strategies to protect vulnerable communities from the escalating dangers posed by climate change.

With time running out, the President underscored that swift and meaningful solutions are crucial to preserving both lives and ecosystems across the globe.

“We gather here, we must demonstrate that we are not only individuals or policy makers but as people bound by the love for our land and environment

“Our children’s future hinge on our decisions, so COP29 must be a shift from dialogue to action,” he stressed.

During COP29, where climate financing took a central role, President Akufo-Addo stressed the need for developed nations to provide financial support to help accelerate the shift toward green energy.

New BoG headquarters worth $250m to be opened by Akufo-Addo on Nov 20

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) will officially open its new US$250 million headquarters, “The Bank Square,” in Accra on November 20, 2024.

The construction of the new headquarters sparked debates last year, especially after the Central Bank reported losses amounting to GH¢60 billion in 2022.

Reports revealed that the bank invested around US$250 million in the project.

Many National Democratic Congress legislators and some Ghanaians questioned the necessity of the project, particularly given the bank’s financial losses.

However, the Central Bank explained that the current building could not withstand natural disasters like earthquakes.

The bank also emphasized that halting the project was not feasible due to the costs already incurred.

In response, Stephen Opata, Special Advisor to the BoG Governor, stated, “The project was already far along. Halting it at that stage would not have been the most prudent choice.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will attend the ceremony as the special guest of honor, which will begin at 10 am. The event will be by invitation only.

Education Minister, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has strongly endorsed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the right leader to further the goals and accomplishments of President Akufo-Addo’s government.

Speaking at an event in Accra on Sunday, Dr. Adutwum commended Dr. Bawumia for his unwavering commitment to both education and economic development.

He emphasized that under Bawumia’s leadership, Ghana can continue to build on the transformative policies already in place.

“Bawumia has demonstrated a deep understanding of our challenges and opportunities,” Adutwum stated. “His vision aligns perfectly with the progress we have made under President Akufo-Addo.”

He highlighted several key successes of the current government, including the Free Senior High School policy and substantial infrastructure advancements, which have significantly expanded access to education.

Adutwum believes that Dr. Bawumia’s experience and dedication will be essential in addressing ongoing challenges and strengthening these gains.

Ken Kuranchie calls for dismissal of Kissi Agyebeng over allege misconduct

Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Searchlight, Kenneth Kwabena Agyei Kuranchie, has formally petitioned President Akufo-Addo to remove Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng from office, alleging severe misconduct and violations of both his official oaths and confidentiality obligations.

In a letter dated October 18, 2024, Mr Kuranchie argued that Agyebeng’s actions meet the criteria for dismissal under Section 15.(1) of the Special Prosecutor Act (Act 959), which outlines the conditions under which the Special Prosecutor may be removed.

“Petitioner presents this petition for the removal of the Special Prosecutor, Mr Kissi Agyebeng, on the authority of Section 15. (1) of the Special Prosecutor Act, (Act 959) of 2017,” noting that grounds for removal include “stated misbehaviour, incompetence, incapacity…willful violation of the Official Oath and Oath of Secrecy.”

Among his claims, Kuranchie asserts that Agyebeng ordered polygraph tests for about 80% of the Office’s personnel, conducted not by Ghana’s National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) but by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

“Petitioner states, first, that this work was not done by the N.I.B, and second, this work was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), an agency of the government of the United States of America, a foreign nation,” Mr Kuranchie asserted.

Mr Kuranchie contends that such actions also represent a “willful violation of the Official Oath and Oath of Secrecy” and pose potential threats to national security and economic interests.

Mr Kuranchie insists that these alleged infractions render Agyebeng unfit for his role, urging the President to act in accordance with Section 15.(1)(a) of Act 959.

In response, President Akufo-Addo has forwarded the petition to the Chief Justice for preliminary examination.

This appeal follows a Supreme Court decision in July 2024 dismissing a separate lawsuit filed by Mr Kuranchie, which aimed to challenge the constitutionality of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

That lawsuit contended that the Special Prosecutor Act, 2017 (Act 957) conflicted with various provisions of the 1992 Constitution. Kuranchie had previously withdrawn a similar suit last year but has recently renewed his efforts, seeking a constitutional review of the OSP’s mandate.

Akufo-Addo’s statue in Western Region being guarded by police?

An X user has accused the Western Regional Police Command of tasking its officers to guard President Akufo-Addo’s statue at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Takoradi.

This allegation follows comments by some X users who are calling for the monument to be pulled down over the belief that the president is not worthy of such honour.

Engaging Accra-based Channel One news, a female resident, Abigail Kondadu noted “I am completely disappointed! I thought statues are used to honour.”

President Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, November 6 unveiled a statue of himself at the entrance of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi as part of his one-day “thank you” tour of the Western Region.

Commenting on the statue’s unveiling, the Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah said the monument honours the President’s contributions to the region.

He highlighted key projects, including the rehabilitation of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the construction of a three-tier Sinohydro interchange, and the redevelopment of the Takoradi Market Circle, all spearheaded under President Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Meanwhile, these projects remain incomplete. This information has fueled criticism against the monument.

Amid the controversy, a member of the Upper Dixcove Traditional Council, Nana Hima Dekyi XIV, has revealed that funding for President Akufo-Addo’s statue was generated through voluntary contributions made by the region’s chiefs.

In a recent interview with Accra-based TV3, he explained that the statue, erected to honor the president for his significant contributions to the region’s development, cost approximately GH₵30,000.

  • We’re positioning Ghana as a model of climate-smart agriculture in Africa – Akufo-Addo

We’re positioning Ghana as a model of climate-smart agriculture in Africa – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has affirmed Ghana’s commitment to leading the way in climate-smart agriculture on the African continent during the 40th National Farmers’ Day celebration on November 8.

Under the theme “Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security,” Akufo-Addo outlined measures to address the urgent threats that climate change poses to Ghana’s food security, emphasizing that the government is actively building resilience within the agricultural sector to ensure sustainability and productivity in the face of erratic weather patterns.

“Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it is a pressing reality that our farmers confront every day,” Akufo-Addo stated, emphasizing the importance of equipping farmers with innovative tools and resources.

Key initiatives include the Programme for Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ 2.0), solar-powered boreholes to support irrigation, and the Ghana Agriculture and Agribusiness Platform (GhAAP) for real-time data access.

“By investing in water management, soil health, climate-resilient crops, and infrastructure, we are positioning Ghana as a model of climate-smart agriculture on the continent,” he declared, reaffirming the government’s vision for a thriving and sustainable agricultural sector that secures livelihoods and food supply for generations to come.

Agroforestry and reforestation efforts form part of Ghana’s broader climate-resilience strategy. Agroforestry, which integrates trees into farming landscapes, reduces soil erosion, improves soil fertility, and provides shade for crops. The Planting for Exports and Rural Development (PERD) module under PFJ 1.0 has supported the planting of tree crops such as cashew, rubber, and oil palm, contributing to both the economy and environmental stability.

Govt constructing 232 solar-powered boreholes to aid farm irrigation – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced that the government is constructing 232 solar-powered boreholes across Ghana to enhance farm irrigation and support sustainable agriculture.

The initiative announced last Friday during the 40th National Farmers’ Day celebration under the theme “Building Climate-Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security,” aims to address the urgent need for water management solutions as climate change threatens food security and agricultural productivity.

The solar-powered boreholes, designed to irrigate an additional 3,144 hectares, will help farmers grow crops year-round, reducing dependency on seasonal rainfall and allowing for crop diversification. “This project not only strengthens our food supply but also provides our farmers with the opportunity to diversify and stabilize their incomes,” Akufo-Addo explained.

A central part of this plan is the Programme for Planting for Food and Jobs (PFJ 2.0), which focuses on climate-resilient agriculture to stabilize food supply.

This comes at a time when the northern part of the country has been hit by a dry spell for over two months. Over 12,600 farmers have been affected, prompting government to ban the export of grains to ensure there is enough supply for the domestic demand.

Finance Minister, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam announced that the government has purchased a $1 million insurance policy to protect smallholder farmers in the northern region against future droughts. The policy will pay out $5 million in the event of a drought.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in collaboration with the European Union (EU), is rolling out a series of interventions to address food insecurity and support agricultural recovery in six targeted districts: North East Gonja, North Gonja, Central Gonja, Bongo, Kasena Nankana West, and Bunkpurugu Nakpanduri.

Two Training of Trainers (TOT) sessions on improved grain storage technologies will be conducted to enhance the capacities of value chain actors, focusing on seed and grain producers. These trainings will provide knowledge on post-harvest handling of grains such as maize and millet, aiming to reduce food loss both at the farm and at storage centres.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has underscored the climate crisis facing Ghana’s farmers. “Climate change is no longer a distant threat; it is a pressing reality that our farmers confront every day,” he stated. The government’s response includes a series of proactive measures to equip farmers with the tools, knowledge, and resources necessary to adapt to extreme weather conditions.

Other key initiatives include the Ghana Agriculture and Agribusiness Platform (GhAAP) for real-time weather and pest updates, soil health programs, climate-resilient crop varieties, and integrated pest management. Through these efforts, Akufo-Addo reiterated the government’s commitment to positioning Ghana as a leader in climate-smart agriculture.

“By investing in water management, soil health, climate-resilient crops, and infrastructure, we are positioning Ghana as a model of climate-smart agriculture on the continent,” he declared, envisioning a resilient agricultural sector that supports the livelihoods of millions and ensures a secure future for the nation.

Violence against December polls shall be met with violence – Akufo-Addo warns

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reinforced the government’s firm stance against any attempts to destabilize Ghana’s democracy as the December 7 general elections draw near.

In his final National Best Farmer Awards address, the president stressed his commitment to maintaining peace and security during this crucial election period.

Speaking on Ghana’s democratic values, he underlined that upholding a fair electoral process is essential to the nation’s stability.

Reflecting on the sacrifices and dedication that have built Ghana’s democratic foundation, President Akufo-Addo noted how it serves as an example across Africa.

He acknowledged the work of past leaders, civil society, and citizens in establishing a peaceful political environment and emphasized that all Ghanaians now share the responsibility to protect this achievement.

The president urged citizens, political figures, and supporters to prioritize unity and peace, reminding them that Ghana’s democratic principles must remain secure against any potential threats.

“As we approach the 2024 general elections, let me make one thing absolutely clear again. I am unwavering in my commitment to free, fair and transparent elections. Ghana’s democracy is a treasure we have all fought to build and a legacy that must be protected.

“The sovereign will of the Ghanaian people will be upheld, and any attempts to disrupt the peace or undermine the democratic process will be met with the full weight of the law. Let there be no doubt, that our democracy will remain strong and the people’s choice will prevail.”

Cocoa producer price increases from GHS3k to GHS3.1k for 2024/2025 season

In a move to support cocoa farmers, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced a marginal increase in the producer price of cocoa, raising it from GH₵3,000 to GH₵3,100 per 64kg bag for the 2024/2025 crop season.

This 3.33% rise follows a review of market conditions and was recommended by the producer price review committee.

At the National Farmers’ Day awards held in Accra on Friday, November 8, the president explained,“On the advice of the producer price review committee, I am pleased to announce an increase in the producer price of cocoa from GH₵48,000 to GH₵49,600 per tonne, raising the price from GH₵3,000 to GH₵3,100 per bag.”

He further emphasized that the government remains committed to supporting farmers by ensuring periodic price reviews, helping improve their incomes despite ongoing challenges.

The National Farmers’ Day also saw the recognition of Nana Owusu Achiaw Brempong from the Sekyere Central district of the Ashanti Region, who was named the National Best Farmer.

With 50 years of experience in farming, Nana Owusu operates North American farms, which employ 168 workers in the cultivation of crops such as cocoa and cashew. As part of his recognition, he was awarded one million Ghana cedis.

During his acceptance speech, Nana Owusu called for greater efforts to improve food security, a theme echoed throughout the event.

The National Farmers’ Day celebrations, held across the country, highlighted the contributions of farmers to Ghana’s economy, with President Akufo-Addo and other dignitaries present to honor their hard work and dedication.

Akufo-Addo’s statue was funded by Upper Dixcove chiefs; it cost about GHS30k – Council reveals

A member of the Upper Dixcove Traditional Council has revealed that the funding for President Akufo-Addo’s statue at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital roundabout in Takoradi was generated by voluntary contributions made by the region’s chiefs.

In an interview with TV3 on Ghana Tonight, Obrempong Nana Hima Dekyi XIV, indicated that the statue serves as an appreciation for the many developmental projects by President Akufo-Addo in the region, adding that the cost to erect the statue amounted to about GH₵30,000.

“It’s very unfortunate that sometimes the ay and manner a communique is carried out. Prior to Wednesday’s engagement, the president’s Thank You Tour, we had received a letter of his invitation extended to the nananom that he will be in the region to thank us that at least when he came to us the people of the Western Region to ask for our votes granted him the mandate and that is tenure will be ending soon.

So when the release came to us quickly nananom actually talked to us about what to do because the chiefs of the Western Region e have always been loving the president for some developmental project in our region and when those request were made to him he took it upon himself to initiate and execute some of these projects.

“We decided to appreciate him for what he has done for the region in terms of this project. e met and we made contribution to erect the statue in his honor. We have honored other people aside the president. The chiefs of Upper Dixcove met and made contributions to put the statue up and it was around GH₵30,000,” he added.

However, the unveiling of the statue has stirred significant criticism, particularly on social media, where many Ghanaians have condemned it as an act of self-promotion rather than an expression of public service.

Among the critics is John Mahama, the flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), who has expressed disapproval, suggesting that the president should have allowed others to acknowledge his efforts rather than promoting himself in such a way.

“He has gone to Takoradi to put his statue and unveiled it. A president must be humble; you must let others praise you instead of praising yourself,” he said.

In an interview with TV3, Obrempong Nana Hima Dekyi XIV, a member of the Upper Dixcove Traditional Council, stated that he has not heard any public objections regarding the statue. He defended the installation, asserting that there has been no widespread opposition to the tribute to President Akufo-Addo.

“I have not heard anybody complaining that they are not happy about it. I am unable to speak to that.

Indeed, as we have listed in the communiqué, we agree that some of the projects have not been completed. But once it has been started, we hope and anticipate that definitely they will come to completion.

“Despite the controversy, some Ghanaians on social media have come to the defense of the monument, praising President Akufo-Addo for his contributions, particularly his flagship policy of free secondary education, which he has described as his “most significant legacy.” Supporters have hailed him as the architect of Ghana’s free education system, with one fan posting “He is deserving of this monument—the greatest president I’ve ever had.”

  • DDEP is a failed strategy hurting the heart of our economy – Mahama

DDEP is a failed strategy hurting the heart of our economy – Mahama

Flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has sharply criticized the Akufo-Addo administration’s Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), asserting that it has contributed to the collapse of major Ghanaian businesses.

Citing the recent death of Dr. Michael Agyekum Addo, CEO of the Kama Group of Companies, Mahama pointed to the businessman’s outspoken criticism of government policies, which he claimed severely impacted his business.

Mahama attributed the failure of the Debt Exchange Programme to what he called the mismanagement of the economy by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking to his supporters in Kasoa, Awutu Senya East Municipality, during his Central Region tour, Mahama blamed the NPP government’s excessive borrowing—over $11.5 billion between 2018 and 2021—for the economic troubles that led to the programme’s failure.

He called on voters in the Central Region to reject the NPP in the upcoming election, arguing that the government’s policies have had a destructive impact on businesses and livelihoods nationwide.

“The DDEP by the Akufo-Addo government has led to the collapse of many indigenous Ghanaian businesses. The founder of the Kama group of companies, Dr.Michael Agyekum Addo lost his entire fortune to the Debt Exchange Programme. Because the government mismanaged the economy and later went borrowing to sustain the economy. This affected pensioners and other government workers who had invested in the economy,” John Mahama said.

“Dr. Michael Addo is just one of many Ghanaians who lost their fortune to the programme. Bonds are the safest in the world except under the NPP government. The NPP has borrowed in excess of 11.5 billion dollars to invest in the programme but all to no avail.

“As we speak now, the founder of the Kama group of companies has passed on after several criticisms of the government when he lost his investment.”

“This government has failed us, and it is about time we gave the NDC the opportunity. We must choose the NDC as the party of choice since they have developed Kasoa,” John Mahama said.

  • Ghana’s mining sector gets a boost as Akufo-Addo commissions largest gold mine

Ghana’s mining sector gets a boost as Akufo-Addo commissions largest gold mine

Ghana has reinforced its status as Africa’s top gold producer by inaugurating Cardinal Namdini Mining Limited, now the country’s third-largest mine.

The mine’s first gold pour marked its official opening on November 8, 2024, led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in the Talensi district of the Upper East Region.

This mine, the largest single-stream operation in West Africa, is projected to boost Ghana’s global position in gold production, with an estimated annual output of 300,000 ounces over its initial three years.

In his remarks at the opening, President Akufo-Addo described the mine’s establishment as a milestone in positioning Ghana as Africa’s premier mining destination. He noted that since taking office in 2017, his administration has focused on broadening the nation’s resource base, investing in the Ghana Geological Survey Authority to bring this vision to life.

The President also highlighted that Cardinal Namdini’s development underscores the mineral wealth of Ghana’s northern region, pledging that these resources will foster both local and national growth. He emphasized that the mine’s establishment reflects the government’s promise to create jobs and economically empower citizens across the country.

“Today marks yet another significant milestone towards the realization of the vision to make Ghana the mining hub of Africa, where all mining and mining-related activities, from exploration to downstream production, and from research to innovation, would be centered”, he said.

“This Mine we commission today is evidence of the power of exploration as the lifeblood of the mining industry. For years, this area, and several other areas within this northern belt of our country, have only been known for small-scale mining.

Large-scale mining firms have concentrated on the south, largely influenced by the literature that links gold only to the south of our nation”, he added.

“It is investment in exploration that led to the construction of this mine, which we are told today will become the third largest mine in the country and one of the largest single-stream gold mines in West Africa. And I am thrilled to learn that apart from this remarkable mine, another large-scale mine is under construction in the Upper West Region.”

Highlighting his administration’s achievements in the mining sector, President Akufo-Addo emphasized its dedication to fostering a supportive environment and robust legal framework for mining companies to prosper in Ghana.

He pointed to the increased financial backing for the Ghana Geological Survey Authority and the establishment of Minerals Commission offices in Tamale, Wa, Bolgatanga, and Bole as significant steps taken to position Northern Ghana as a prominent hub for mining activities in the country.

“Since 2017, we have increased budgetary allocation to the Ghana Geological Survey Authority to undertake more exploration to identify mineable lands, both for small and large-scale mining. Additionally, we have refurbished the office of the Authority, which was commissioned by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources last week, to provide a conducive environment for staff of the Authority to carry out their operations.

“To ensure the provision of adequate resources for geological investigations, we are amending the Minerals Development Fund Act, 2016 (Act 912) to increase the allocation to the Authority from mineral royalties from eight percent (8%) to thirteen percent (13%). And from next year, God willing, the Government of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will allocate Ten Million United States Dollars (US$10,000,000.00) annually to the Authority to support their geological investigations.

The establishment of new Regional and District Offices for the Minerals Commission in Tamale, Wa, Bolgatanga, and Bole comes at a critical juncture.

With the launch of this mine and the construction of another in the Upper West Region, northern Ghana is poised to emerge as the new frontier of mining in the country. Regulatory agencies must now be prepared to rise to the demands and challenges that lie ahead in supporting this transformation.

“As we commission this mine and pour its first gold, we are fulfilling our commitment to creating a brighter future for the people of Ghana, including Talensi and its environs. It will create jobs, foster local development, and contribute significantly to both the local and national economy.

It will bring about a transformative change in this area, providing opportunities for growth and development that will benefit generations to come,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo unveiled a statue of himself on Wednesday, November 6, at the entrance of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi during his one-day ‘thank you’ tour of the Western Region.

The event has sparked reactions from some members of the public.

Uproar in Ghana after president unveils his own statue

Ghana’s outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo is facing a backlash on social media after he unveiled a statue of himself during a tour of the country’s Western Region.

The monument is intended to honour the development initiatives the president has overseen whilst in office, the region’s minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah says.

But many Ghanaians have been mocking its installation – outside a hospital in the city of Sekondi – seeing it as “self glorification”.

“The people of the Western Region deserve better than these self-serving displays,” opposition MP Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah posted on X.

Akufo-Addo, who will be standing down in January after two terms in power, has boasted that he has fulfilled 80% of his promises to Ghanaians.

He unveiled the monument, prominently placed in front of Sekondi’s Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, on Wednesday during his visit that has been dubbed a “thank-you tour”.

At the ceremony, Darko-Mensah, who oversees the Western Region, highlighted several key projects initiated under the president.

But the statue has sparked a wave of criticism, with some Ghanaians questioning its importance when several key projects remain incomplete.

“It would be admirable if the president had allowed posterity to recognise and appreciate his work,” an X user posted.

A section of the public is calling for the statue – photos of which have gone viral – to be pulled down after the president leaves office.

But not everyone is critical, with some seeing it as an acknowledgement of Akufo-Addo’s contributions to the development of the country.

“He is very deserving of this exquisite monument. The greatest president I’ve ever had. You will be missed by Ghanaians,” one person posted, adding that Akufo-Addo was the “founder of Ghana’s free education system”.

During his tour, the 80-year-old president has singled out his policy to scrap fees for secondary schools as his “most significant legacy”.

His visit has also fed into campaigning nationwide by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Western Region, in the south-west, is one of 16 regions in the country.

The president urged people there to vote for his deputy, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, in next month’s general election.

He will be the NPP’s candidate and Akufo-Addo said a vote for him would see the continuation of the party’s policies and projects.

Bawumia’s main challenger will be former President John Dramani Mahama, who is seeking a comeback under the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The high cost of living is a key campaign issue in Ghana, Africa’s leading producer of gold.

Ghanaian media personality Bridget Otoo has added her voice to the criticism surrounding President Akufo-Addo after a statue of him appeared on social media.

“You build a statue for yourself over uncompleted projects. These people are insufferable!!!” she wrote.

Bridget further suggested that former President John Dramani Mahama should have built a statue of himself in every region where he developed infrastructure.

“Then JM should have built himself a statue in each region he built a Free SHS school, a university, a market, or a hospital,” she added.

He urged voters to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming elections, highlighting his Free SHS policy as a landmark achievement that has transformed education across Ghana.

“While I do not claim to have fully satisfied all promises, a significant portion – roughly 80% – of our manifesto pledges have been fulfilled, with notable advancements in education, healthcare, infrastructure development, industrial reform, agriculture, and cocoa production. Previously, financial difficulties hindered approximately 100,000 junior high graduates from advancing to senior high school annually, despite meeting academic requirements.

Over the past decade, approximately 1,000,000 students faced obstacles in advancing their educational journey, but since the implementation of Free SHS in 2017, our educational system has witnessed remarkable enhancements to date, he elucidated.

Bagbin presses Akufo-Addo to sign anti-LGBTQ bill as Parliament resumes

Speaker Alban Bagbin has intensified pressure on President Akufo-Addo to sign the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill, also known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, into law.

Speaking at a media briefing ahead of Parliament’s upcoming session on November 7, Bagbin said, “I have earlier instructed the Clerk of Parliament to transmit the anti-LGBTQ+ bill to the President for assent.”

Alban Bagbin voiced strong criticism against both President Nana Akufo-Addo and the Judiciary, accusing them of constitutional violations concerning the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

The Office of the President in March officially requested Parliament to refrain from transmitting the Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values, commonly referred to as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, to President Akufo-Addo for his assent.

In a letter addressed to Parliament on March 18, and signed by the Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo, the request was made in light of two pending applications for an order of interlocutory injunction currently before the Supreme Court.

The letter emphasised that it would be improper for Parliament to proceed with transmitting the Bill to President Akufo-Addo for any action until the matters before the court are addressed.

Furthermore, it was disclosed that the Attorney-General has advised the President against taking any action regarding the Bill until the issues raised by the ongoing legal suits are resolved by the Supreme Court.

In his address today, Bagbin alleged that the President and the Judiciary have undermined Parliament’s authority by stalling the bill’s progress, despite it being duly passed by the legislative body.

Bagbin claimed that both institutions had “sinned against the constitution” and emphasized that they “must seek the opportunity to confess and repent to be forgiven.”

The Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, formally known as the “Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill,” proposes criminal penalties for individuals engaging in or promoting LGBTQ+ activities. Parliament passed the bill in February, but subsequent lawsuits have prevented it from reaching the President for assent. Among the legal challenges are cases filed by journalist Richard Dela Sky, gender activist Dr. Amanda Odoi, and law lecturer Prince Obiri-Korang, each raising concerns about the bill’s impact on individual rights and freedoms.

The Judicial Service of Ghana has addressed these delays, clarifying that procedural requirements are yet to be fulfilled in the two Supreme Court cases. A statement from the Judicial Service on September 13, 2024, noted that “essential procedural requirements are yet to be fulfilled by the parties involved,” and outlined that key defendants, including Parliament and the Attorney General, have not completed necessary filings.

In Sky’s case, initiated in March, both Parliament and the Attorney General had reportedly not submitted their Statements of Case by July 31, 2024, just before the Court’s recess. In Odoi’s case, which dates back to June 2023, the Attorney General has yet to submit the required documentation, contributing to further delays.

Hundreds of demonstrators flooded the streets on Tuesday, October 8, demanding swift judicial action and the immediate assent of the anti-LGBTQ bill, formally known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Act, 2024.

The protest, organised by proponents of the controversial bill, saw a diverse group of participants, including activists, community leaders, and concerned citizens, rallying for the acceleration of legal proceedings that have stalled the bill’s final approval.

Mahama’s presidency will reverse Ghana’s progress – Akufo-Addo warns Ghanaians

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has warned that electing John Mahama and the NDC in the upcoming December elections would be a setback for Ghana.

He argued that Mahama and the NDC “have nothing new” to offer.

During a meeting with chiefs and elders in the Western North Region on Wednesday, President Akufo-Addo underscored that NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia represents renewed hope and progress.

He encouraged the group to support the NPP to continue advancing the nation.

“John Dramani Mahama will come here again before we vote in December 2024. When he comes, ask him about the Kumasi Brewery. It produces beer, and Guinness, and used to work three shifts within 24 hours. It collapsed during his tenure.

“You want a 24-hour economy but couldn’t oversee what was left in your care. Is it now that you are going to do something about it?

“Let’s not make a mistake and retrogress. Let’s throw our weight behind Bawumia and move forward to take Ghana to the next step of development,” he stated.

    I haven’t delivered all my promises but 80% have materialised – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has acknowledged that while his administration hasn’t fulfilled every promise made, he believes 80% of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) manifesto commitments have been achieved.

Speaking during a tour of the Western North Region on Tuesday, November 5, he highlighted the government’s accomplishments and reiterated his commitment to advancing Ghana’s development.

“I wouldn’t stand before you and say I have delivered on all my promises. That will not be truthful, but I can confidently say that 80% of our manifesto promises have been achieved,” Akufo-Addo stated, pointing to successes in education, health, infrastructure, industrial transformation, agriculture, and cocoa.

Addressing the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, the President emphasized its transformative impact, noting that since its introduction in 2017, over 5.7 million students have gained access to secondary education, breaking financial barriers that previously hindered many families.

He cited this as one of his administration’s key achievements. President Akufo-Addo also expressed his gratitude to the people of the Western North Region for their steadfast support, which he said has been instrumental in reaching these milestones.

He reassured them of his administration’s dedication to fulfilling remaining commitments, despite challenges along the way.

Prediction ahead of December Polls can cause chaos – Akufo-Addo tells clergy

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appealed to religious leaders to curb members who are making public prophecies about the outcome of Ghana’s December 7, 2024, general elections.

The president’s message, delivered by the Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, at the “Agent of Peace” campaign organized by the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC) on Sunday, November 3, 2024, urged the clergy to encourage peace and uphold respect throughout this significant electoral season.

“Indeed, democracy requires more than elections, but the country cannot be democratic without holding genuine elections to elect its leaders. Elections are the basis for democratic legitimacy and they are a mechanism to peacefully resolve the transfer of political power.

“We in Ghana have grown and must learn the lessons of having peaceful elections. We must avoid the use of provocative and abusive language in our campaigning. Let us respect the electorate and not assume that one political party has already won the election when a single ballot is yet to be cast.

“I call on all our revered members of the clergy also to put a check on those of their members who are going round and prophesying winners of an election which is yet to be held,” citinewsroom.com quoted Stephen Asamoah Boateng to have said on behalf of the president.

The president highlighted the importance of maintaining decorum within both political and religious circles, advising against language that could sow division or foster premature claims of victory.

He underscored that respectful dialogue is vital for preserving Ghana’s reputation as a regional leader in democratic progress as the nation prepares for the 2024 elections.

Calling for the clergy’s support in promoting decorum, the president stressed the need for restraint and impartiality during the electoral period, reminding religious leaders to be cautious in their public discourse.

He added, “I call on revered members of the clergy also to put a check on those of their members who are going round and prophesying winners of an election which is yet to be held.”

As Ghana approaches a critical election season, Akufo-Addo underscored that political parties and religious groups should refrain from divisive language, keeping the nation’s democratic principles and unity at the forefront.
