Supreme Court under Akufo-Addo is acting as if it is above the constitution – Tony Aidoo

Former Ghana Ambassador to the Netherlands, Dr. Tony Aidoo, has criticised the Supreme Court under President Akufo-Addo, alleging that it acts as a supra-constitutional authority that intrudes into the functions of Parliament.

In a recent interview on Newsfile aired by JoyNews and reported by MyNewsGh.com, Aidoo questioned the legal validity of a lawsuit brought forward by the Majority Leader, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, asserting that it lacks any legal foundation.

Aidoo’s comments reflect a growing concern over the judiciary’s influence on legislative processes in Ghana.

“The Supreme Court in the past years, especially under the Akufo-Addo administration, behaved as if it’s a supra-constitutional body that can interfere in every activity of Parliament.

Afenyo-Markin’s writ did not show any legal course for interpretation,” Dr. Aidoo bemoaned.

Dr. Tony Aidoo contends that the matter regarding vacant parliamentary seats is not a legal one but rather a direct outcome of actions taken by the MPs, governed by a clear conditional provision that requires no further interpretation.

He expressed his backing for the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, stating that Bagbin properly applied the law as outlined in Article 97, sections (g) and (h).

Additionally, Aidoo raised concerns about the Supreme Court’s actions, suggesting it behaves as if it were a sixth colonist for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), implying undue influence over parliamentary affairs.

“Every case the NPP loses in Parliament, it takes it to the Supreme Court because they know it is a pact court where decisions are taken to favour them. This is not the root of proper governance of our country,” Dr. Aidoo lamented.

The Supreme Court of Ghana has rejected an application from Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin, who aimed to overturn a prior ruling that prevented him from declaring four parliamentary seats vacant.

This ruling adds to the ongoing legal discourse regarding the extent of the Speaker’s authority and the judiciary’s influence on parliamentary matters.

In his application, Speaker Bagbin sought to nullify the Supreme Court’s earlier decision that had temporarily halted his ruling concerning the four disputed seats.

Additionally, he aimed to dismiss a writ submitted by Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, which called for judicial intervention to stop the Speaker from making further declarations regarding these seats .

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has affirmed his commitment to a smooth and peaceful transfer of power, vowing to hand over leadership to the winner of Ghana’s 2024 general elections as determined by the electorate.

Addressing the gathering at the Anlo Hogbetsotso Za festival on November 2, Akufo-Addo emphasised his dedication to ensuring that the December 7 elections will be free, fair, transparent, and peaceful.

He also extended his gratitude to the chiefs and people of Anlo for their consistent support and prayers throughout his presidency, recognizing their role in maintaining stability.

Additionally, he expressed heartfelt appreciation to Ghanaians nationwide for upholding peace during his administration.

“As we all know, without peace, there can be no proper development. The peace we are currently enjoying is the peace that we will carry through to the elections on 7th December.

“I want to assure the people of Anlo, the people of the Volta region, and the people of Ghana that the elections, the forthcoming elections in December, are going to be free, fair, transparent, and peaceful.

“And on the 7th of December, I will hand over the baton of national leadership to whoever the people of Ghana choose to succeed me.”

He is desperate for a third term to swerve accountability – Bawah Mogtari chides Akufo-Addo

Campaign Spokesperson and Special Aide for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has voiced her belief that President Akufo-Addo is making a strong push for an unofficial third term.

In an October 30 Facebook post, Mogtari alleged that the President is attempting to avoid accountability for his administration’s actions, implying an unwillingness to face scrutiny over his government’s policies and decisions.

“Clearly, Akufo-Addo is desperate for a third term, and it’s clear his main guy isn’t up to campaigning or facing the tough questions. So, of course, he’s taken the wheel back,” she posted.

Mogtari’s remarks underscore what she views as a calculated attempt by Akufo-Addo to maintain influence within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) by backing its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. She contends that the President’s active campaigning is a strategy to deflect criticism of his leadership while paving the way for his party to retain power through Bawumia.

According to Mr. Mahama’s spokesperson, the President’s actions suggest a deep-seated desire to evade responsibility for the consequences of his administration’s governance, which has encountered various challenges, including economic setbacks.

By supporting Dr. Bawumia, Mogtari argues that Akufo-Addo aims to secure the continuation of his policies without bearing the repercussions that could arise under a new leadership.

Akufo-Addo signs Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act 2024 into law

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially enacted the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act, 2024, representing a significant advancement for the nation’s shipping and logistics industry.

The Act, which was approved by Parliament in July and received the President’s assent on October 18, 2024, empowers the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) with enhanced regulatory authority across sea, air, and land transportation.

This initiative aims to foster a competitive and balanced environment for commercial shipping in Ghana.

In a statement released on October 31, 2024, the GSA expressed its readiness to promote transparency in pricing, uphold service quality, and position Ghana as a leading hub for international trade.

This legislative progress coincides with the GSA’s 50th anniversary, highlighting the organization’s long-standing dedication to promoting equitable trade practices.

Originally established as the Ghana Shippers’ Council in 1974, the organization was renamed Ghana Shippers’ Authority in 1998 to better represent its broadened mission of advocating for a thriving trade environment.

“The Ghana Shippers’ Authority expresses deep gratitude to all stakeholders for their invaluable contributions toward this legislative milestone,” the GSA noted, emphasizing the role of collaboration in shaping the new Act.

To facilitate effective implementation, the Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) has initiated a nationwide sensitization campaign aimed at educating stakeholders about their rights and responsibilities under the newly enacted Act.

Additionally, the Authority is in the process of collecting feedback to develop a Legislative Instrument (L.I.) that will support the operational framework of the law.

Stakeholders are encouraged to engage actively in this initiative, contributing to the creation of a sustainable and resilient shipping ecosystem in Ghana.

Akufo-Addo might have to take the steer since Bawumia can’t campaign – Joyce Bawah

Campaign Spokesperson and Special Aide for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has suggested that President Akufo-Addo may need to take control of the campaign as Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia struggles to effectively advocate for his candidacy.

In a recent Facebook post dated October 30, Mogtari asserted that the President is attempting to evade accountability for his administration’s actions, indicating a reluctance to face scrutiny for his government’s policies and decisions.

“Obviously, Akufo-Addo desperately needs a third term, and it is obvious his side guy no dey fit campaign or answer the questions, abi you know, so Orga take the steer back,” she posted.

Mogtari’s comments highlight what she perceives as a calculated effort by President Akufo-Addo to position himself favourably while supporting the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia. She argues that this vigorous campaigning is a strategy to distance himself from the criticisms directed at his leadership and to secure a continuation of his party’s rule through Bawumia.

Mr. Mahama’s spokesperson contended that the President’s actions reflect a deep-seated desire to escape the consequences of his administration’s governance, which has faced various challenges, including economic difficulties. By backing Dr. Bawumia, Mogtari believes that Akufo-Addo is trying to ensure that the legacy of his policies is perpetuated without facing the repercussions that may arise from a change in leadership.

Dr. Bawumia has called on Ghanaians to hand over the steer of affairs to him from his boss, Nana Akufo-Addo since he currently cannot take any decisive action in his role as Vice President. He argues that he can carry out his plans for the country if elected president in the upcoming polls.

  • You’ve got no level because you’re a one-term president – Akufo-Addo jabs Mahama

    You’ve got no level because you’re a one-term president – Akufo-Addo jabs Mahama

President Akufo-Addo has taken a swipe at former President John Dramani Mahama, highlighting that Mahama remains Ghana’s only one-term president.

During a tour of the Ahafo Region on Tuesday, October 29, President Akufo-Addo suggested that Mahama’s lack of a second term calls into question his credibility and political influence, implying that he should not boast of a higher “level” than others.

This remark follows Mahama’s recent refusal to engage in a debate with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

President Akufo-Addo argued that Mahama has no grounds to claim superiority over Dr. Bawumia, stating that Mahama’s tenure as a one-term president does not place him above the Vice President.

“Mahama says he won’t debate Bawumia because Bawumia is not on his level. Really? He is not his class, but for me, I don’t know what class Mahama has for which reason he says he won’t debate Bawumia.”

“For me, the only class I know is that since the Fourth Republic, five persons have had the opportunity to be presidents of this country but unfortunately one person couldn’t complete his term.”

He urged supporters in Ahafo to back Bawumia in the upcoming elections, stressing that his Vice President’s leadership and contributions stand as a testament to his capacity to lead Ghana effectively.

Speaking to supporters in the Ningo Prampram Constituency in Greater Accra, Mahama dismissed the idea, stating that debating Bawumia would only serve to elevate the Vice President to his level. He insisted that he would rather debate Dr. Bawumia, as he is not obligated to engage a Vice President on matters of policy.

  • Dollar selling at GHS17; when are you resigning? – Mahama quizzes Akufo-Addo

Dollar selling at GHS17; when are you resigning? – Mahama quizzes Akufo-Addo

Former President John Mahama has challenged President Akufo-Addo to consider resigning over the Ghana cedi’s sharp depreciation.

Speaking at a rally in Lugni, Wulensi constituency, in the Northern region, Mahama reminded the public that Akufo-Addo, as a candidate, once suggested that the late President John Evans Atta Mills should resign when the cedi was trading at GH2 to the dollar.

Now, with the cedi nearing GH¢17 to the dollar, Mahama questioned whether Akufo-Addo would follow his own advice and step down under the current economic circumstances.

“He’s on video, and he said that Kufour’s time, Gh¢1 [equals] one dollar, Mahama and Mills time, two cedis, one dollar, and that if he were Mills and Mahama, he would resign. I’m asking him, today one dollar, 17 cedis, would he resign?” he quizzed.

The NDC flagbearer asked the president to “tell the people of Ghana when he’s going to resign.”.

Mr Mahama appealed to the Independent Parliamentary Candidate for the area, Stanley, who broke away from the party, to put his ambitions aside and rejoin the NDC.

He said that breaking away was only going to affect his political career because the NDC was going to win massively in the Parliamentary and presidential elections.

Speaking at Bimbilla in the Nanumba North Municipality, former President Mahama opined that members of the international community have been asking questions about Ghana’s ‘deteriorating’ democracy.

“Anywhere I go, the question people outside in the world ask me is, ‘Ghana, what happened to you?’” he claimed.

Mr Mahama said Ghana was not only a model of democracy but also a model of economic management but was quick to note that the country’s democracy and economy were in shambles.

He said, “Everybody looked up to Ghana as the model of democracy; today, we’re a quack model of democracy. Our judiciary is not independent; all our state institutions have been destroyed. People looked up to Ghana as a country that was a model of economic management; today our economy is in shambles.”

Mr Mahama was later at Ngani in the Yendi constituency on Tuesday evening,, where he addressed a mammoth rally.

  • I haven’t seen any bad thing from Bawumia since I met him – Akufo-Addo

I haven’t seen any bad thing from Bawumia since I met him – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has expressed strong support for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the ideal successor to lead Ghana forward.

Speaking on October 29 during a tour of the Ahafo Region, Akufo-Addo commended Bawumia’s loyalty, steadfastness, and dedication since they began working together in 2008.

Reflecting on their partnership, Akufo-Addo praised Bawumia’s commitment to Ghana’s development and expressed confidence in his vice president’s vision to elevate the nation to an advanced stage. He emphasized that Ghana’s future needs a leader with Bawumia’s consistency and leadership, qualities he believes are essential to sustaining progress.

Akufo-Addo contrasted Bawumia’s leadership potential with that of the opposition candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama. Citing Mahama’s previous administration from 2012 to 2016, he suggested that the former president’s tenure lacked the transformative drive Ghana now requires, positioning Bawumia as the leader best suited to continue Ghana’s development.

Reflecting on his decision to introduce Bawumia to politics, Akufo-Addo recounted, “Dr. Bawumia was the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana when I brought him into politics. When I first picked him in 2008, even though we lost the polls, I kept faith in him. We lost again in 2012, but by God’s grace, we won the 2016 election, and since then, I have not seen any bad thing from him.”

Addressing the people of Ahafo, Akufo-Addo urged them to support Bawumia in the upcoming election, encouraging a strong show of confidence in his leadership by voting in his favour. “I can vouch for his capabilities and his ability to lead the country, and I will not leave Ghana for someone who can’t do the job. God will not allow that to happen,” he said.

With these remarks, Akufo-Addo signaled his hope to bolster support for Bawumia’s candidacy, framing it as essential to secure the progress his administration has achieved and to ensure a prosperous future for Ghana.

  • The only person who can continue my work is Bawumia – Akufo-Addo

The only person who can continue my work is Bawumia – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has declared his firm belief that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the best candidate to succeed him and lead Ghana forward.

Speaking during his tour of the Ahafo Region on Tuesday, October 29, President Akufo-Addo praised Dr. Bawumia’s qualifications, emphasizing that his vision and leadership abilities make him uniquely suited to advance Ghana to a new level of development.

Highlighting his dedication to the country’s future, the President noted that he is motivated to ensure Ghana’s progress remains in the hands of someone capable.

According to President Akufo-Addo, only Dr. Bawumia, with his strong dedication and proven track record, has the right experience to guide the nation’s development. In his remarks, he contrasted Dr. Bawumia with National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate John Dramani Mahama, citing Mr. Mahama’s tenure from 2012 to 2016 as evidence of limited leadership and economic management skills.

“As I am about to leave, I have one plea; as you all know, if any president is about to leave office, he cares about who is succeeding him. My plea is that the only person who can continue the work I have done and move Ghana forward, taking the country to an advanced stage, is my Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia,” he said. “I can vouch for his capabilities and his ability to lead the country, and I will not leave Ghana for someone who can’t do the job. God will not allow that to happen.”

President Akufo-Addo urged Ahafo Region residents to support Dr. Bawumia’s vision by voting decisively in his favour, underscoring that Dr. Bawumia’s leadership would ensure the continuity of Ghana’s development path.

Reflecting on Dr. Bawumia’s journey, President Akufo-Addo noted, “Dr. Bawumia was the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana when I brought him into politics. When I first picked him in 2008, even though we lost, I kept faith with him for the 2012 election, which we also lost, but God being so good, we won the 2016 election, and I have not seen any bad thing from him since I first met him.”

Ayorkor Botchwey will see the Commonwealth flourish – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has expressed his profound pride and confidence following the appointment of Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, as the new Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

Her election, announced during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2024) in Apia, Samoa, marks a historic moment as she becomes the first Ghanaian and African woman to assume this prestigious role.

In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), President Akufo-Addo congratulated Botchwey on her election, emphasizing the significance of her appointment. “Today, I feel a deep sense of pride and joy in congratulating Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway on her election as the next and 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. As the first Ghanaian to hold this position, her selection speaks to the strength of her character and her dedication to service, as well as to the esteem in which our nation, Ghana, is held amongst her peers.”

Reflecting on Botchwey’s career, President Akufo-Addo highlighted her unwavering commitment to both national and international service. “For years, I have watched her serve Ghana, Africa and the international community with unshakeable commitment and grace,” he noted. As Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Botchwey has been instrumental in promoting diplomacy, fostering cooperation, and building bridges across borders. Her new role as Secretary-General presents an opportunity to extend her vision to the wider Commonwealth community.

“She carries with her a vision of inclusivity and progress that I know will inspire the Commonwealth family, and guide it towards a future of hope and unity,” President Akufo-Addo added, underscoring his belief in her leadership and ability to strengthen the Commonwealth’s role in global affairs.

Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey’s election followed a rigorous selection process, competing against notable candidates, including Senator Joshua Setipa of Lesotho and Dr. Mamadou Tangara of The Gambia. With strong endorsements from President Akufo-Addo and former President John Mahama, Botchwey’s candidacy symbolized a shared aspiration among Commonwealth leaders for African representation at the highest level.

In her acceptance speech, Botchwey outlined her vision for the Commonwealth, describing it as “the most consequential body after the UN.” She emphasized her commitment to using the organization’s collective influence to foster prosperity and resilience among its 2.68 billion citizens. “I care deeply about the Commonwealth and its diverse people,” she said, affirming her determination to make a significant impact during her tenure.

President Akufo-Addo extended his appreciation to the Commonwealth leaders for their support of Ghana’s candidate. “To my fellow Heads of State and Government, I express my heartfelt gratitude for this resounding vote of confidence in Ghana’s candidate. In choosing her, you have placed your trust in a passionate advocate for our shared values,” he said. He expressed optimism that with Botchwey’s leadership, “we will see the Commonwealth flourish, standing as a beacon of cooperation and strength for its people.”

The President also took the opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of the outgoing Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland, Baroness Scotland of the United Kingdom. “I express our sincere appreciation to the outgoing Secretary-General, the Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland, KC, for her outstanding service to the Commonwealth and its organisations. We wish her God’s blessings and the best of luck in all her future endeavours,” he stated.

Akufo-Addo thanked Samoa’s Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, and the people of Samoa for their warm hospitality during the historic 27th CHOGM, which highlighted themes of resilience and collaboration—key areas Botchwey has pledged to champion.

As Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey steps into her new role, President Akufo-Addo assured her of Ghana’s unwavering support. “As Hon. Ayorkor Botchwey steps into this new chapter, I extend the unwavering support of the people of Ghana. We all look forward to the brighter, more resilient Commonwealth that she will help to build, one rooted in the values we cherish.”

Botchwey’s leadership will focus on strengthening democratic institutions, advocating for human rights, and addressing climate change, particularly challenges faced by small and island states. These priorities align closely with the 2024 CHOGM theme: “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Common Wealth.”

Govt businesses to be affected by adjournment of parliamentary sitting

The Speaker of Parliament’s adjournment of parliamentary sittings yesterday is expected to impact several government businesses that were before Parliament for deliberation and approval.

Speaker Alban Bagbin indefinitely adjourned sitting amid a controversy over vacant seats, leaving several key parliamentary businesses such as the approval of two Supreme Court Judge nominees appointed by President Akufo-Addo and tax waivers over $350 million, in limbo.

In July this year, President Akufo-Addo nominated two new judges to the Supreme Court bench following their approval by the Judicial Council.

These two professors Richard Frimpong Oppong, a legal academic and fellow of the Ghana Academy of Sciences, and Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah, a justice of the Court of Appeal were to be approved by Parliament following a vetting by the Appointments Committee.

But they never met the Appointments Committee due to chaos, emanating from unconstitutional appointment claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) members on the committee.

The government in the second quarter of the year presented a $350 million tax waiver request for some 42 companies under the One District One Fund (1D1F) initiative.

However, this request was never granted on the floor of parliament during an emergency sitting, where the leader of the National Democratic Congress Caucus, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, questioned the basis for such waivers when the government is in dire need of funds as a result of the economic crisis.

On the matter, the Member of Parliament for Effutu and leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alexander Afenyo-Markin accused the NDC MPs of stifling the progress of local companies and Ghanaian businesses with their action.

Additionally, pending bills before Parliament include the Architects Registration Bill 2024, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (Amendment) Bill 2024, the Vaccines Development and Manufacturing Bill 2024, and the Environmental Protection Agency Bill 2024.

  • Bagbin hasn’t met Akufo-Addo to negotiate settlement on fate of 4 MPs – Parliament

Bagbin hasn’t met Akufo-Addo to negotiate settlement on fate of 4 MPs – Parliament

Parliament has firmly denied claims circulating on social media that the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, met with President Nana Akufo-Addo to negotiate a settlement regarding the declaration of four parliamentary seats vacant.

This follows a social media video suggesting that such a meeting took place after the Speaker’s ruling on October 17, 2024, which declared the seats of four Members of Parliament vacant.

In a statement released by Parliament, it was clarified that the video in circulation is misleading. The footage, according to the official response, is from July 4, 2024, when Speaker Bagbin led a delegation to present the maiden Democracy Cup to the President.

Parliament described the video as being “wrongly labelled and twisted” to create false narratives about the Speaker’s integrity.

“Parliament states without any equivocation that there is no iota of truth in the insinuation in the circulated video,” the statement said.

The controversy began when Speaker Bagbin ruled on a call by the Minority Leader to declare the seats of four MPs vacant, leading to a leadership crisis in the House. However, Parliament is now urging the public to disregard the video, branding it as an “attempt to hoodwink” people into believing a false story.

“The attempt to wrongly label the video and twist facts to impugn the integrity of the Rt. Hon. Speaker and Parliament is not only disingenuous but unfortunate,” the statement continued.

Parliament has therefore urged the public to “treat the narrative with the contempt it deserves” and to disregard any attempts to mislead them about the Speaker’s actions or any supposed negotiations with the President.

This denial comes amidst ongoing political tension in Parliament following Speaker Bagbin’s controversial ruling, which has sparked debate over the balance of power between the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Urology and Neurology centre: Proof of govt’s vow to boost healthcare delivery – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has extended his gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the newly constructed state-of-the-art Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

On Friday, October 18, 2024, the president inaugurated a state-of-the-art Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, marking a major step forward in Ghana’s healthcare system.

The new centre is set to provide critical care for patients suffering from urological and nephrological conditions, offering advanced treatments that were previously unavailable in the country.

The facility is expected to reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for specialised care while also positioning Ghana as a hub for medical tourism in the West African sub-region.

The Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence, constructed at a cost of €38 million, was made possible through a credit facility provided by Raiffeisen Bank International AG of Austria, with insurance cover from OeKB Group.

The facility boasts cutting-edge technology and a wide range of services aimed at addressing the growing burden of kidney diseases and urological disorders in the country.

President Akufo-Addo described the commissioning of the Centre as a “considerable milestone” in Ghana’s healthcare journey, one that exemplifies the government’s unwavering commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure.

“This modern facility will provide advanced treatments for patients with chronic and acute kidney failures, as well as other urological conditions. The Centre is also positioned to offer life-saving services such as kidney transplants—helping to fulfil our national objective of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC),” the President said during his speech.

The Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence is fully equipped to deliver comprehensive healthcare services. It includes a 30-suite dialysis station for patients with kidney disorders, a 70-bed unit for genito-urinary patients, an outpatient department, and comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services.

The facility also has inpatient care services, administrative and management offices, public amenities, and staff facilities. In addition, it features medical and non-medical support services, a research facility, and a three-year post-construction maintenance and training program to ensure the facility’s smooth operation in the years ahead.

With such state-of-the-art capabilities, the Centre will be able to serve not only Ghanaians but also patients from neighbouring countries. This opens the door for medical tourism, which President Akufo-Addo emphasised as a potential revenue generator for the facility.

“The Centre will put Ghana on the map for medical tourism, providing services to patients from neighbouring countries and beyond. This will generate additional revenue for the facility, ensuring sustainability and continued expansion of services,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo said his government has long prioritised healthcare development as part of its broader goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) for all Ghanaians. The commissioning of the Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence, he said, is just one example of the many initiatives aimed at improving access to quality healthcare across the country.

During his speech, the President pointed to some significant strides he says his administration has made in healthcare infrastructure, citing the successful commissioning of the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital in August 2024 as a recent example.

By the close of 2024, he said, the government expects to complete several additional healthcare projects, including the construction of 11 district hospitals and one polyclinic in the Ashanti, Eastern, Greater Accra, and Ahafo Regions.

These projects are part of the government’s flagship “Agenda 111” initiative, which aims to build district hospitals in every district without one, as well as fully functional regional hospitals in each regional capital, particularly in the newly created regions.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo provided an update on the Agenda 111 initiative, revealing that eight district hospitals are nearing completion.

He noted that as of September 2024, the overall progress of the project stands at 69%. The president expressed optimism that a number of these hospitals, which are over 90% finished, would be fully completed before the end of the year.

“These projects represent the fulfilment of our commitment to achieving Universal Health Coverage and ensuring the delivery of more efficient healthcare services across the country,” the president remarked.

On Friday, October 18, 2024, the president inaugurated a state-of-the-art Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

“Our healthcare infrastructure stands as one of the greatest legacies of my administration,” he added.

The Akufo-Addo administration has made strides in improving healthcare infrastructure and is now prioritising the fair distribution of healthcare personnel, especially in rural and underserved regions.

President Akufo-Addo has called on the Ministry of Health to fast-track the finalisation of an incentive package aimed at encouraging healthcare workers to serve in areas where they are critically needed.

This initiative is part of the government’s larger plan to ensure more equitable access to healthcare services nationwide.

“We remain steadfast in addressing the uneven distribution of healthcare workers,” the president said.

“I urge the Ministry of Health to expedite the completion of the draft incentive package for government consideration, ensuring that healthcare staff are placed where they are most needed.”

Consult Speaker, CJ to address tension in Parliament – Akufo-Addo told

The African Center for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA) has called for urgent consultations between President Akufo-Addo, Speaker Alban Bagbin, and Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to resolve the ongoing dispute over which caucus holds the majority in Ghana’s Parliament.

The minority caucus continues to assert that it holds the majority, despite a Supreme Court ruling that stayed the execution of Speaker Bagbin’s decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant. The standoff has created significant tension, raising concerns about the stability of parliamentary proceedings.

ACEPA‘s Executive Director, Dr. Rasheed Draman, in an interview with Citi News, warned that the current parliamentary impasse could jeopardize Ghana’s democracy.

“It is a very serious matter for our democracy. And I think that if I could offer any advice, the three branches of government—our president, our speaker, and our Chief Justice—would have to have a conversation,” he said.

Dr. Draman also highlighted the potential consequences of the impasse, stressing the need to avoid a chaotic breakdown of parliamentary order.

“Perhaps that includes the leadership of parliament so that we avoid any chaotic situation because this could lead to a breakdown of law and order,” he cautioned. “Can you imagine, for one moment, the military stepping in to resolve our differences because parliament is not working anymore? The breakdown of that forum could lead to the usurpation of civilian power, with all the dire consequences that follow.”

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party and cousin to President Akufo-Addo, has also urged members of Parliament to act with maturity to avoid chaos when the House reconvenes on Tuesday. In a Facebook post on Sunday, October 20, 2024, he emphasized the need for dialogue between the leaders of both caucuses ahead of Tuesday’s session.

“Parliament must, by all means, avoid a situation of seeming chaos and anarchy on Tuesday. I suggest the two leaders and the Speaker meet before then to agree or agree to disagree on the next steps. Not long to Dec 7, let maturity be our guide and guard,” Otchere-Darko wrote.

Akufo-Addo commissions Urology Centre, touts growth in health sector

President Akufo-Addo has commissioned the new Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, touting his administration’s achievements in the health sector.

He described the ongoing developments as unprecedented, underscoring the impact of ongoing projects aimed at improving healthcare delivery across the country.

The President assured Ghanaians that the completion of the Agenda 111 project, which seeks to build hospitals nationwide, will greatly enhance the nation’s healthcare infrastructure.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on October 18, President Akufo-Addo highlighted key progress in reducing maternal, adolescent, and child mortality rates, which he identified as vital indicators of improvement in the sector. He reaffirmed his government’s commitment to modernizing healthcare services and infrastructure across Ghana.

“From 2017 to August this year, we’ve added some 8,665 hospital beds for admission, i.e. from 24,153 hospital beds in 2016 to 32,818 hospital beds by August 2024, representing a rise of some 36%, further underscoring our commitment to expanding healthcare infrastructure,” the President stated.

He further emphasized that these figures do not include the beds that will be added through the Agenda 111 project. Additionally, he pointed out significant strides made in reducing maternal mortality, noting that the Institutional Maternal Mortality Ratio (IMMR) had declined steadily from 127.3 deaths per 100 live births in 2018 to 102.1 per 100 live births in recent years.

The newly opened Urology and Nephrology Centre is expected to enhance Ghana’s capacity to provide specialized medical care, reinforcing the government’s ongoing investment in the health sector.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has highlighted his administration’s significant accomplishments in the health sector, deeming them unprecedented.

He stated that the ambitious Agenda 111 project, once completed, will drastically transform Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure.

While speaking at the inauguration of the new Urology and Nephrology Centre of Excellence at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital on October 18, the President noted the government’s achievements in lowering maternal, adolescent, and child mortality rates, which he identified as crucial indicators of progress in healthcare delivery.

He reiterated his government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services and infrastructure to meet the nation’s growing demands.

“From 2017 to August this year, we’ve added some 8,665 hospital beds for admission i.e. from 24,153 hospital beds in 2016 to 32,818 hospital beds by August 2024, representing a rise of some 36% further underscoring our commitment to expanding healthcare infrastructure.

“This excludes the total number of beds to be provided by the Agenda 111 Project. We’ve also made significant strides in reducing maternal, adolescent and child mortality rates.

The Institutional Maternal Mortality Ratio (IMMR) has shown a steady decline, dropping from 127.3 deaths per 100 live births in 2018 to 102.1 deaths per 100 live births in recent years.

Additionally, there have been notable improvements in reducing neonatal, infant, and under-five mortality rates.

However, despite these advancements, challenges persist, particularly in ensuring equitable access to healthcare services for children across the country.

These achievements underscore our commitment to enhancing healthcare services and advancing toward the Sustainable Development Goals. Our specific targets include reducing maternal mortality to 70 deaths per 100,000 live births and under-five mortality to 12 deaths per 1,000 live births by 2030.

“Despite these gains, challenges remain particularly in ensuring equitable access to healthcare services for children across the country.

Galamsey fight is your responsibility – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has addressed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s challenge on his stance regarding illegal mining (galamsey).

During a meeting with NDC supporters in the Greater Accra region on Thursday, October 17, Mahama pointed out that the responsibility to tackle the galamsey issue lies with President Akufo-Addo as the current leader, rather than diverting attention by challenging his political opponents.

“President Akufo-Addo said I should come clearly on galamsey, it looks like he doesn’t live in this country because I have commented on galamsey over and over again.

“The University of Energy and Natural Resources gave political leaders the top platform to outline their policy on small-scale mining, and for a whole hour, I outlined our policy, after that, there were questions and answers for two hours, we were there for three hours.

“President Akufo-Addo should tell the Jubilee House press to give him my tape on galamsey which I have delivered at the University of Mines and Natural Resources. Recently when I met the clergymen, a part of my speech it was again on galamsey and small-scale mining.

“It is his responsibility, the people of Ghana elected him, he is currently the president of Ghana, and it is his responsibility to deal with Galamsey now. I know that after 7th January 2025 when Ghanaians have voted for me, I will take that responsibility and we will stop illegal mining.”

While on a thank-you tour of the North East region, President Akufo-Addo called on John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, to publicly declare his stance on the issue of illegal mining (galamsey).

Ghanaians want Mahama to debate Bawumia on key issues of our country – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has thrown a challenge to former President John Dramani Mahama, urging him to engage in a public debate with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

During his tour of the Northern Region, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the growing calls from Ghanaians for a debate between the two leaders, noting that such a discourse is essential for informed decision-making ahead of the elections.

According to the President, Dr. Bawumia is a reliable and clear-minded leader who has proven his competence over time, making him more than capable of debating Mahama on the key issues facing the country. Akufo-Addo questioned why Mahama appears reluctant to confront Bawumia in a public forum, asserting that this hesitation raises doubts about Mahama’s ability to address critical national matters.

“The people of Ghana deserve the debate so they can see who is doing what and who is saying what,” Akufo-Addo said. He emphasized the need for transparency and accountability, particularly regarding crucial policies such as the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) initiative. The President pointedly asked Mahama to clarify his position on the policy, stating, “Mr. Mahama, which is which? What should the Ghanaian people take from you as your position on the Free SHS policy? Is it safe with you, and are you going to continue with it or are you going to cancel it?”

Akufo-Addo argued that it is essential for Ghanaians to hear both candidates articulate their visions for the future, especially on critical policies that impact the nation’s development. He reiterated that Vice President Bawumia is ready and willing to debate Mahama, calling on the former President to stop avoiding the opportunity for a direct exchange of ideas.

Akufo-Addo insisted that no one should be allowed to hold the highest office in the land if they cannot provide clear answers on fundamental issues like education. He urged Mahama to accept the challenge, noting that Ghanaians deserve a transparent and open debate between the two leaders before making their choice in the upcoming elections.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has raised concerns about John Dramani Mahama’s capability to lead Ghana, cautioning that his return to power could threaten key policies like the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.

Addressing the chiefs and people of the North-East Region, President Akufo-Addo warned that voting for Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming December 7 general elections could lead to the discontinuation of major initiatives, including the Free SHS policy.

He cited recent statements by Mahama as an indication that the NDC leader might abolish the program if he wins the election.

Akufo-Addo called on Mahama to clarify his position on Free SHS, stressing that Ghanaians deserve transparency on the future of a policy that has positively impacted many students nationwide.

“Let’s ask him [Mahama], which is which? What should the Ghanaian people take as your real position? Because this chopping and changing, chopping and changing, is a very difficult thing for some of us to understand.

“What should we believe? Are you going to change it? Are you going to cancel it? Are you going to improve it? Because every time you open your mouth, you say a different thing.

  • My fight against galamsey cost NPP votes in 2020 – Akufo-Addo

My fight against galamsey cost NPP votes in 2020 – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has revealed that he has taken significant political risks, even putting his presidency at stake, in the ongoing battle against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Since his commitment to tackle the issue in 2017, his efforts have faced substantial criticism.

Speaking during his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Northeast Region on Tuesday, October 15, President Akufo-Addo reiterated his resolve to eliminate galamsey, affirming that he stands by his promise and is willing to face any consequences as a result.

He expressed disappointment over the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) poor performance in mining communities during the 2020 elections, attributing the decline to propaganda spread by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.

The president pointed out that the NPP’s support almost collapsed in key mining areas, particularly in the Western Region.

“In the last election [2020] in the mining districts of the country, the NPP did very badly largely because the NDC presidential candidate and the party had gone around the mining areas and said that the policy that I was implementing of trying to stop galamsey would be reversed when he comes to power and that those who were already in jail for offences, the galamsey offences, all of them would be amnestied.

“When I said I was putting my presidency on the line, that’s what I meant, that I was prepared to take the political risk involved in trying to deal with this galamsey phenomenon. The result, of course, was that the mining districts, especially in the Western region, all of them, including almost nearly even Tarkwa, were lost to the NPP.

“That is what I meant when I said I’m putting my presidency on the line, that I was prepared to take the political risk involved in coming to grips with this problem.”

He then challenged Mahama to clarify his position on galamsey.

“Today, he [Mahama] said that, no, he doesn’t believe in jail, that he’s against galamsey, and he will enforce the law. So once again, we have to ask ourselves, Mr. JM, where do you stand? What are you telling the people of Ghana? Because every time you speak, you speak from one corner of your mouth and you speak from another corner of your mouth.”

I put my presidency on the line to stop galamsey, NPP lost seats – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has reiterated his determination to combat illegal mining, also known as galamsey, even at the cost of his political standing.

During his thank-you tour in the Northeast Region on Tuesday, October 15, the President emphasized his willingness to take significant political risks to address the pressing issue.

Speaking to local chiefs, President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the impact of galamsey on his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly during the last election. He revealed that the NPP lost several seats in constituencies heavily affected by illegal mining, largely due to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaigning against his anti-galamsey policies.

“This galamsey matter has become a major issue in Ghana today. In the last election, the NPP performed poorly in the country’s mining districts. The NDC presidential candidate and his party went around these areas, telling people that they would reverse the policy of stopping galamsey if they came to power and grant amnesty to those imprisoned for galamsey offences,” the President explained.

Akufo-Addo reminded the audience of his earlier commitment to risk his presidency in the fight against galamsey, reaffirming that he was prepared to face political consequences to curb the illegal practice. “When I said I was putting my presidency on the line, I meant it. I was ready to take the political risk to deal with this galamsey phenomenon. As a result, the NPP lost many seats in the mining districts, especially in the Western Region, including almost losing Tarkwa,” he added.

The President’s remarks highlight the complexity of balancing political interests with the need for sustainable solutions to the environmental and social challenges posed by galamsey. Despite the political fallout, Akufo-Addo underscored the importance of continuing the fight against illegal mining.

He called on all stakeholders to approach the galamsey issue without partisan bias, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to tackle the problem. By working together, Akufo-Addo believes that Ghana can develop more effective strategies to mitigate the devastating impact of galamsey on the country’s environment and communities.

“We must set aside political differences and focus on finding lasting solutions to this crisis,” he urged, stressing that the fight against galamsey is a national responsibility that requires unity and cooperation.

You can’t trust your future with Mahama; reject him – Akufo-Addo tells Ghanaians

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has raised concerns about the capability of former President John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, to effectively govern Ghana if re-elected.

Akufo-Addo warned that a Mahama presidency might threaten critical national policies, including the Free Senior High School (SHS) program.

Addressing the chiefs and residents of the North-East Region, he cautioned that voting for Mahama in the upcoming December 7 elections could result in the discontinuation of initiatives like Free SHS, which has provided educational opportunities for thousands of Ghanaian students.

Akufo-Addo referenced recent statements by Mahama, which he believes suggest the NDC candidate might cancel or undermine the Free SHS policy.

He urged Mahama to clarify his position on the matter, stressing that the people of Ghana deserve transparency on his plans for the program.

“I understand your visit is part of the thank-you tour of the regions, as your tenure of office is gradually coming to an end. I don’t know whether to be happy for you for the successful completion of your mandate or to be sad about the fact I am going to miss a great friend.”

  • At the heart of this galamsey crises is leadership failure – Ato Forson pokes Akufo-Addo

At the heart of this galamsey crises is leadership failure – Ato Forson pokes Akufo-Addo

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has taken a direct swipe at the Akufo-Addo-led government, accusing it of failing to demonstrate the leadership needed to address Ghana’s growing illegal mining menace, commonly referred to as galamsey.

According to Dr. Forson, this lack of political will and government complicity has worsened the environmental crisis, pushing the nation toward what he described as an “environmental genocide.”

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, October 15, Dr. Forson lamented the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s natural resources, particularly water bodies, forests, and farmlands. He warned that the country’s environmental health and the well-being of its citizens are at grave risk if urgent steps are not taken.

“At the heart of this crisis is leadership failure, official complicity, and lack of political will by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia NPP government. We are literally at war with ourselves, and the destructive effects are both frightening and far-reaching,” Dr. Forson stated.

He pointed to the widespread contamination of water bodies with dangerous chemicals such as mercury, lead, and cyanide, which are recklessly discharged by illegal miners. According to him, these pollutants are already causing serious health issues, particularly in rural communities that depend on rivers for drinking water and agriculture.

“Medical experts have delivered a scary verdict. Babies are being born with various deformities, such as the absence of limbs and eyes, due to exposure to toxic chemicals from polluted water bodies,” he said, painting a dire picture of the future if the galamsey situation remains unchecked.

Dr. Forson did not mince words in attributing the ongoing crisis to the government’s failure to crack down on illegal mining activities. He expressed disappointment in the government’s reluctance to enforce the law, arguing that the lack of action reflects a deeper problem of official complicity.

He also emphasized that the failure to act decisively against galamsey is not only threatening the country’s biodiversity and natural resources but also Ghana’s long-term sustainability and economic future.

“Mr. Speaker, we are at a crisis point. To do nothing is no longer an option. The Akufo-Addo government must rise to the occasion and act now, or the damage could be irreversible,” he warned.

Dr. Forson concluded by calling on Parliament to hold the government accountable and to urge the President and Vice President to take immediate and drastic measures to curb the ongoing destruction caused by galamsey. According to him, it is the duty of the House to protect Ghana’s environment and ensure the survival of future generations.

President Akufo-Addo, on a goodbye tour of the region, responded by thanking the people of Gonjaland for their unwavering support throughout his presidency. He highlighted two significant achievements in the area—the creation of the Savannah Region and the restoration of peace in Dagbon—as defining moments of his administration.

“There are two significant matters that I want to single out for mention: the cooperation and collaboration I received from your predecessor. First, for the great help he gave in being one of the three chiefs who helped me bring peace to Dagbon. He was one of the three eminent chiefs, alongside Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Na-yiri, who helped bring peace to Yagbon,” Akufo-Addo stated.

The president also recounted how the people of Gonjaland petitioned for the creation of the Savannah Region. He credited the Yagbonwura and the people for their role in bringing that vision to reality. “By the grace of God, we worked together and brought the Savannah Region to life,” he noted.

Akufo-Addo emphasized that his administration’s legacy in Gonjaland extended beyond the peace process and regional creation, with developments in infrastructure, health, and education benefiting the area.

  • Can’t we describe Akufo-Addo as a joker for failing galamsey fight? – UTAG-KNUST chapter

Can’t we describe Akufo-Addo as a joker for failing galamsey fight? – UTAG-KNUST chapter

Professor Eric Abavare, President of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), has defended his use of the term “joker” to describe President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in relation to the government’s efforts to combat illegal mining, also known as galamsey.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, October 12, Prof. Abavare questioned the president’s performance in fighting galamsey, stating that his description was justified given the government’s failure to significantly address the environmental damage caused by illegal mining.

His comments drew criticism from Enoch Afoakwa, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communications team, who expressed discomfort with the term used. However, Prof. Abavare stood by his statement, asserting that it reflected the reality of the president’s handling of the issue.

“My learned friend Enoch said I have described the president with a word that he is not comfortable with. I want him to understand that I want my government to succeed. I want my country to succeed, and if my government succeeds, it means my country also succeeds,” Prof. Abavare explained.

He further elaborated on his choice of language by referencing the government’s inability to reclaim lands destroyed by illegal mining: “I made those descriptions about the president and I still stand by them; that he is a big joker! When we attended elementary school, you recall that we studied something called ’rounding off.’ You have a fraction that is less than 5, and then you round it out to be zero. So, if the environmental audit report of the Accountant-General says that we have reclaimed less than 1 percent of destroyed lands and in the examination, if you get less than 50 percent, we say you have failed.”

Prof. Abavare concluded by questioning the president’s performance on galamsey, saying, “Assuming I have put the president to an examination on galamsey and I am supposed to assess him on his performance of land reclamation and he gets less than 1 percent, and I describe him as a joker, is it out of the blue?”

His remarks highlight ongoing frustrations with the government’s inability to effectively address the devastation caused by illegal mining, as Ghana continues to grapple with the environmental and social consequences of galamsey.

Your leadership in environmental campaigns is exceptional – Akufo-Addo to Okyenhene

President Akufo-Addo has praised Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin for his unwavering commitment to combating environmental degradation over the past 25 years.

Since ascending to the Ofori Panin Stool, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin has been a prominent advocate for environmental preservation, spearheading campaigns against deforestation, irresponsible mining, water pollution, and actions contributing to ozone layer depletion and global warming.

“Today, the advocacy you started 25 years ago has become an issue of serious concern to all. Many groups and institutions have seen the need to join the campaign against irresponsible mining and the need to protect the environment. You have done well. You have promoted peace and development in Okyeman, The world has seen your dedication and humility towards mankind,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo made these comments during the Grand Durbar celebrating the 25th anniversary of Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin’s ascension to the Ofori Panin Stool at Kyebi over the weekend.

This grand event marked the culmination of a series of durbars commemorating the Okyenhene’s milestone.

The celebration allowed the King of Akyem Abuakwa to tour the five divisions, engaging with his divisional chiefs and subjects.

The festivities began with the Adonten divisional durbar in Kukurantumi, followed by events in Begoro (Benkum), Asiakwa (Nifa), Wenchi (Oseawuo), and Kwaben (Gyaase).

In his address, President Akufo-Addo encouraged Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin to rise above personal attacks and maintain his focus on serving humanity.

“As for the insults, don’t worry, just be focused, if you complain of insults, then what about me?” Akufo-Addo stated with a smile.

In response, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin expressed gratitude to the many supporters, institutions, and individuals who have backed his efforts over the past 25 years.

He also commented on Ghana’s governance and development, stating that the current centralized governance model is outdated and hinders accountability and progress.

He advocated for genuine decentralization that empowers local assemblies to raise resources for their development and control local institutions.

‘Kwame Nkrumah initiated the concept of centralizing our resources and governance system, we send all our resources to the national coffers and governance is controlled at the top. This system hasn’t helped us and we need to change.’ Okyenhene.

The grand anniversary durbar saw attendance from distinguished chiefs across the country, including the Ga Mantse, Nungua Mantse, Osu Mantse, New Juabenmanhene, Ejisu, Manso Nkwanta Chiefs, Offinsohene, Yilo Krobo Chief, Kwahu Tafo chief, and several Asona Chiefs, as well as the Okuapehene and other notable chiefs from the Central and Western regions.

Social justice activist Felicity Nelson has accused President Akufo-Addo of failing to address the issue of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, due to his lack of electoral incentives for the upcoming 2024 elections.

Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, October 12, she criticized what she sees as inconsistencies between the president’s statements and actions in the fight against illegal mining.

Nelson highlighted that, despite the president’s strong rhetoric about protecting Ghana’s environment, the government’s actions have not aligned with his words.

She referenced President Akufo-Addo’s previous assertion that he prioritizes the interests of future generations over political gain, questioning the sincerity of his commitment to safeguarding the environment.

“He speaks very well, but his actions are not consistent with the things that he does because if he did, he is not contesting this election and should have dealt with this galamsey menace,” she remarked.

The activist further argued that the government’s inability to effectively combat galamsey undermines its dedication to the well-being of Ghanaians, particularly as the destructive impact of illegal mining continues to devastate water bodies, farmlands, and forests.

Madam Nelson called for more genuine efforts and transparency from the government in addressing the galamsey crisis, emphasizing that mere words are insufficient. She urged President Akufo-Addo and his administration to implement stronger and more consistent measures against illegal mining to protect the environment and future generations.

“Actions, not promises, will determine the success of the fight against illegal mining,” she concluded.

Wake up and show leadership – Senyo Hosi tells Akufo-Addo

Convener of the One Ghana Movement, Senyo Hosi, has urged President Akufo-Addo to “wake up and show leadership” in the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

In an interview with TV3 on Saturday, October 12, Hosi expressed disappointment in the government’s handling of the issue, asserting that meaningful progress has not been made to curb the environmental destruction caused by illegal mining.

Hosi noted that, despite numerous promises and efforts from the government, illegal mining activities continue to devastate Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves. He called on the president to take stronger, more decisive actions to address this threat to the nation’s future.

The One Ghana Movement convener emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of mining regulations and greater accountability among government officials responsible for overseeing the sector. He believes that without a concerted effort to tackle the root of the problem, galamsey will persist in undermining Ghana’s economic and environmental stability.

Mr. Hosi further called on the general public and civil society groups to hold the government accountable and apply pressure for effective action against illegal mining. He argued that the fight against galamsey should be a national priority due to its far-reaching consequences on the environment and the livelihoods of millions of Ghanaians.

“You have failed us, Nana Addo. Wake up to your responsibilities and not for your party gains. Please, do something that will make a lasting legacy for you and your generation. Wake up and show leadership. That is what is required of you, President,” he stated.

  • Akufo-Addo checked out of this country long ago – Dzifa Gomashie on galamsey fight

Akufo-Addo checked out of this country long ago – Dzifa Gomashie on galamsey fight

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu South Constituency, Dzifa Abla Gomashie, has asserted that President Nana Akufo-Addo has “checked out of this country long ago” in relation to the ongoing fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey, in Ghana.

Speaking to the media in Agbozume, she emphasized the urgency of sustaining efforts against illegal mining and called for a renegotiation of mining practices to allow forest reserves to recover.

“Let the environment breathe again and then let’s renegotiate how we do mining in our country. We’re not the only people with gold, but we’re the ones who are shamed internationally for destroying our water bodies and our forest reserves,” Gomashie stated.

Dzifa Gomashie criticized the president for his perceived inaction, saying, “Our president, Nana Akufo-Addo checked out of this country long ago; he may be physically present but he is not here with us.” She also expressed concern that the Ghanaian media lacks the courage to confront those in power regarding galamsey activities.

Regarding the recent failed anti-galamsey strike by organized labor, Gomashie, a Catholic, expressed her support for a prayer walk initiated by some members of the church to combat the menace.

“Enough is enough; pause for a moment and take into consideration all that is going on, and take a step that will rectify the situation. We’re tired of the history lessons of how it was before; the reality is worse than before,” she lamented.

In response to the escalating crisis, President Akufo-Addo has directed the Minister for Defence to increase military personnel for “Operation Halt,” a government initiative aimed at combating illegal mining, particularly near water bodies and forest reserves. This decision comes amid rising demands from Organised Labour for an immediate halt to galamsey activities, along with threats of strikes if the government fails to act decisively.

A press release dated October 9, 2024, from the Presidency indicated that the operation will be significantly enhanced, including the deployment of naval boats on polluted rivers to enforce a suspension of all mining activities—both legal and illegal. The increased military presence aims to protect Ghana’s natural resources and reduce the environmental damage caused by illegal mining. The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the country’s water bodies and forest reserves, declaring that no mining activities will be permitted in designated “red zones.”

Akufo-Addo orders deployment of additional military to galamsey site

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has instructed the Minister for Defence to increase military personnel for the government’s initiative, “Operation Halt,” aimed at combatting illegal mining, known as galamsey, especially in proximity to water bodies and forest reserves.

This move follows rising demands from Organised Labour, which has urged an immediate cessation of galamsey activities and threatened strikes if the government fails to respond effectively.

In a press release dated October 9, 2024, the Presidency stated that the operation will be significantly strengthened, including the deployment of naval boats on polluted rivers to enforce the immediate suspension of all mining activities—both legal and illegal.

The enhanced military presence is intended to bolster efforts to protect Ghana’s natural resources and mitigate the environmental damage caused by illegal mining.

The government reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the country’s water bodies and forest reserves, declaring that no mining activities will be permitted in designated “red zones.”

This initiative aims to restore public trust in the government’s ability to address the galamsey crisis, which has severely impacted water quality and ecosystems throughout the country.

“The President has directed the Minister for Defence to deploy additional military forces to intensify the ongoing “Operation Halt”, which aims to curb illegal mining activities.

“The operation will be bolstered by the deployment of naval boats on polluted river bodies to ensure the immediate cessation of all mining activities, legal or illegal, in and around these water bodies.”

President Akufo-Addo reiterated his commitment to ending illegal mining and called for unity among citizens, political leaders, and stakeholders in this crucial national endeavor.

In related news, Organised Labour has called off its planned nationwide strike scheduled for October 10, 2024.

This decision was reached during an emergency meeting on October 9, where union leaders reviewed the situation and opted to suspend the industrial action.

The decision came after the government assured Organised Labour of its commitment to addressing illegal mining. Union leaders noted the significant steps taken, including strengthening the Operation Halt initiative led by the Ghana Armed Forces to combat illegal mining in forest reserves.

During a media briefing, Joshua Ansah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, explained that the strike was postponed to allow Labour to monitor the government’s implementation of these measures.

The proposed strike, which had garnered support from various unions, was aimed at pressuring the government to take decisive action on illegal mining (galamsey) and other urgent issues.

  • Ghana’s economic recovery proves the impossible is possible – Akufo-Addo

Ghana’s economic recovery proves the impossible is possible – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised the economic recovery underway in Ghana.

This recovery follows the government’s successful restructuring of $13 billion in Eurobonds.

As a result, the country has been able to re-enter international financial markets.

On June 24, an agreement in principle was reached between the Republic of Ghana and the Ad Hoc Group of International Bondholders for restructuring the outstanding Eurobonds.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) approved this agreement, confirming it aligned with the program parameters and met the Official Creditor Committee’s comparability of treatment requirements for Ghana.

With support from the Committee of Holders of the Republic of Ghana’s Eurobonds, a consent solicitation was launched on September 5, proposing the restructuring plan to all bondholders.

The transaction has since concluded, with over 90% of bondholders voting in favor of the deal.

The new debt instruments are set to be settled and delivered on October 9, 2024, following the World Bank’s longstop date on October 7, 2024.

On this date, the old bonds will be swapped for new securities according to the revised terms. Additionally, payments from the World Bank are expected to be executed on or before October 30, 2024.

“Today, our economy has turned a corner. This landmark achievement ushers in a new phase of economic recovery, returning Ghana to a sustainable debt path and putting us back on the investor map. We’ve accomplished what everyone said was impossible – we decisively resolved Ghana’s debt overhang problem. This will allow Ghana to stabilise our finances and focus all our efforts on continuing the implementation of the ambitious reform program to improve the well-being of the Ghanaian people. We are thankful to our bondholders, the IMF and our official creditors for their support and collaborative engagement to arrive at this solution,” Akufo-Addo stated.

“Today’s completion of the restructuring will help Ghana restore debt sustainability, reducing the debt stock by $4.7 billion and providing cash flow relief of approximately $4.4 billion in the next two years. The deal is already positively influencing our macro-financial situation. The increasing market confidence in Ghana and our economic trajectory has significantly reduced the inflation rate. Our growth projections are also more positive – Q2 of 2024 saw the highest quarterly GDP growth recorded in the past five years, at 6.9%. Our government takes pride in this progress and remains committed to advancing our reform agenda and attracting new investment to foster growth and job creation,” Mohammed Amin Adam, Minister for Finance and Economic Planning of Ghana, said.

Minister for Finance and Economic Planning Mohammed Amin Adam highlighted that the restructuring will enhance Ghana’s debt sustainability, reduce the debt stock by $4.7 billion, and provide approximately $4.4 billion in cash flow relief over the next two years.

He noted that the deal is already positively impacting the macro-financial situation, boosting market confidence in Ghana and leading to a significant reduction in inflation rates. Growth projections have also improved, with the second quarter of 2024 recording the highest quarterly GDP growth in five years at 6.9%. The government is committed to advancing its reform agenda and attracting new investments to drive growth and job creation.

The government expresses heartfelt thanks to the Steering Committee of the Ad Hoc Creditor Committee of International Bondholders and their advisors, Rothschild & Co and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, as well as the Steering Committee of the Creditor Committee of Regional Bondholders and their advisors, Renaissance Capital Africa, for their constructive engagement throughout the process.

The presidency’s statement further expressed gratitude to the advisors Lazard Frères and Hogan Lovells, serving as financial and legal advisors, along with Algest, which acted as a strategic advisor to the Republic of Ghana during this debt restructuring.

“We thank our advisors Lazard Frères and Hogan Lovells, acting respectively as financial and legal advisors, and Algest, acting as a strategic advisor, for supporting the Republic of Ghana during this debt restructuring,” a statement issued by the presidency said.

  • Outcome of Akufo-Addo’s meeting with Organised Labour over galamsey

Outcome of Akufo-Addo’s meeting with Organised Labour over galamsey

President Akufo-Addo on October 3, held a high-level meeting with Organised Labour at the Jubilee House to address the ongoing menace of illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey.’

The meeting, which aimed to tackle the widespread environmental and socio-economic damage caused by galamsey activities, culminated in several key agreements between the government and Labour unions.

Both parties acknowledged the severe toll illegal mining has taken on Ghana’s water bodies, forest reserves, and communities. As a result, a series of commitments were made to enhance efforts against the illegal mining scourge. Among the significant outcomes were:

    1. Collaboration to Combat Galamsey: The government, Organised Labour, and other stakeholders agreed to work together to address illegal mining activities.
    2. Revocation of Mining in Forest Reserves Law: The government committed to repealing the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) Regulations, 2023 (L.I. 2462), when Parliament reconvenes in October.
    3. Reinforcement of “Red Zones”: Both parties reaffirmed the government’s position that all water bodies and forest reserves would remain “Red Zones” where all forms of mining are strictly prohibited.
    4. Empowering Law Enforcement: The government promised to empower law enforcement agencies to eliminate illegal mining activities from these protected areas, ensuring that those caught in the act face full prosecution under the law.
    5. Speedy Adjudication of Galamsey Cases: The Attorney-General and the Chief Justice agreed to collaborate to expedite the adjudication of cases involving illegal mining.
    6. Depoliticizing the Fight Against Galamsey: Both sides expressed their support for a proposed pact that would require all presidential candidates in future elections to commit to depoliticizing the fight against illegal mining.

Despite these agreements, Organised Labour reiterated its intention to proceed with a nationwide strike, citing the government’s failure to adequately address their concerns. According to Labour leaders, “Government’s proposal does not adequately address our demands, and therefore, our notice of strike remains unchanged.”

The planned strike is expected to send a strong message to the government, urging for more decisive and immediate action to curb the devastating effects of illegal mining on Ghana’s environment and economy.

  • Mahama gave more mining licences than Akufo-Addo – Minerals Commission CEO

Mahama gave more mining licences than Akufo-Addo – Minerals Commission CEO

Chief Executive Officer of the Minerals Commission, Martin Ayisi, has disclosed that former President John Dramani Mahama issued a greater number of small-scale mining licences compared to the current President, Nana Akufo-Addo.

This statement has reignited debate over the management and regulation of Ghana’s mining sector, especially concerning small-scale operations.

During a presentation to the Government Assurances Committee of Parliament, led by North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Mr. Ayisi shared documentation supporting his claims.

He pointed out that the surge in licenses granted during Mahama’s administration has played a role in the ongoing challenges facing the mining industry.

Emphasising the importance of responsible mining practices and enhanced oversight, he highlighted the need to prevent small-scale mining activities from causing environmental damage and social issues.

The Minerals Commission has come under fire for the increase in illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as “galamsey,” which pose significant risks to both the environment and local communities.

Mr Ayisi highlighted that while small-scale mining plays a crucial role in the economy, it is essential to strike a balance between economic benefits and environmental protection.

The Minerals Commission CEO has also opposed calls for halting the issuance of new mining licenses amid calls for government action against all forms of illegal mining.

According to him, such a move could exacerbate the illegal mining crisis.

Appearing before Parliament’s Assurance Committee on Monday, October 7, Ayisi argued that if licences were not granted, it would push individuals into illegal mining commonly known as “galamsey” as a way to continue their activities.

  • One phone call by Akufo-Addo can end galamsey – Hassan Ayariga

One phone call by Akufo-Addo can end galamsey – Hassan Ayariga

Leader of the All People’s Congress (APC), Dr. Hassan Ayariga, has voiced his conviction that illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey, could be entirely eradicated if President Nana Akufo-Addo took firm and decisive measures.

Speaking during an interview on the Ghana Kasa show with Kweku Ofosu, Dr. Ayariga argued that the ongoing galamsey operations continue because the government permits them.

He further stated that those in positions of authority are the very individuals facilitating and enabling these illegal mining activities.

“If the government truly wanted to stop galamsey, all the president needs to do is make one phone call, and it will end,” Dr. Ayariga said, stressing that without government approval, illegal mining wouldn’t flourish.

He further alleged that foreign nationals, particularly Chinese citizens involved in galamsey, have government backing. “The Chinese involved in galamsey don’t just arrive in Ghana by themselves; they are here with permits that go through government channels—most politicians in Ghana support galamsey. There’s no way galamsey would happen without government approval,” he asserted.

He concluded by stressing that those in power are the sponsors behind both large-scale and small-scale illegal mining. Dr. Ayariga called on the government to take action if it is truly committed to ending galamsey.

Act responsibly and stop courting unnecessary sympathy – Prof Gyampo tells govt

President of the University of Ghana Chapter of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UG-UTAG), Professor Ransford Gyampo, has openly condemned the government’s approach in addressing the illegal mining issue, also known as galamsey.

His criticism follows a private meeting between President Akufo-Addo and leaders of Organised Labour, held on Thursday, where the president requested more time to tackle the galamsey problem.

The meeting was arranged after Organised Labour declared an indefinite strike scheduled to begin on October 10.

The strike was announced on Tuesday, October 1, after the government failed to meet their demands for an outright ban on all forms of mining and the declaration of a state of emergency to stop galamsey activities.

President Akufo-Addo urged Organised Labour to reconsider the strike, reassuring them of his determination to address their grievances.

On Friday, October 4, Information Minister Fatimatu Abubakar issued a statement reaffirming the government’s resolve to deal with the illegal mining crisis.

However, in an interview with Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, Prof Gyampo expressed his dissatisfaction with the government’s communication, stating that Organised Labour had not yet fully updated its members on the situation, making the government’s announcement premature and counterproductive.

“First of all, Organised Labour is yet to meet with its membership to brief them on what really transpired. So, I don’t think that it lies in the mouth of the Minister of Information to deliberately issue that statement to create the impression that something is being done when Organised Labour has not even briefed its membership. It doesn’t help,” Prof. Gyampo stated.

He further criticised the government’s approach, suggesting that it was more focused on gaining public sympathy rather than taking effective action against galamsey.

“Why the indecent haste to break the news, to achieve what? This is a fight against galamsey. It is not about asking for better conditions of service where you can use some of these propagandistic tendencies to try to sway or win public sympathy.

“Members of the public that we are fighting for are dying just as we are also dying. So, it is not about courting unnecessary sympathy; it is about doing the right thing,” he added.

Akufo-Addo lauded for championing Presidential Pitch

Winners of the 5th edition of the Presidential Pitch have praised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for spearheading the initiative, which aims to empower young entrepreneurs across Ghana.

The Presidential Pitch, which provides a platform for young innovators to present their groundbreaking ideas, has been hailed as a crucial part of the government’s efforts to foster entrepreneurship.

Namgwinaa Samuel emerged as the overall winner of Season 5 with his revolutionary Smart Switch System, an innovation that controls energy consumption automatically and allows remote task execution.

The system also doubles as a security-controlled communication device. For his outstanding achievement, Samuel was awarded the prestigious Dr. John Kumah Prize for Entrepreneurship and Innovation by President Akufo-Addo.

Samuel’s victory came after a challenging journey. He stood out among over 300 applicants, eventually making it to the top 10 finalists, all of whom were vying for the grand prize of GHC250,000. The Presidential Pitch provided Samuel and other finalists a unique opportunity to showcase their transformative ideas.

The beneficiaries, including Samuel, expressed their appreciation for the initiative, commending the President’s dedication to nurturing young entrepreneurs and driving innovation in the country.

During a brief ceremony at the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP) office, where certificates and cash prizes were awarded, NEIP Chief Executive Officer Mr. Kofi Ofosu Nkansah emphasized the programme’s impact.

“The Presidential Pitch has become a catalyst for youth entrepreneurship in Ghana, with a focus on empowering young entrepreneurs to turn their ideas into reality,” he said.

Mr. Ofosu Nkansah also highlighted NEIP’s broader achievements: “Since its inception in 2017, NEIP has supported over 250,000 beneficiaries with business development assistance, provided starter packs to 35,000 businesses, and facilitated funding for 15,000 entrepreneurs, leading to the creation of over 100,000 jobs.”

In total, 35 winners were awarded cash prizes ranging from GHC30,000 to GHC250,000, along with certificates of participation. The winners will also benefit from ongoing business advisory services and mentoring through NEIP’s partner business incubation and acceleration hubs in their respective fields.

The Presidential Pitch, now in its fifth season, continues to be a shining example of the government’s commitment to promoting entrepreneurship and creating opportunities for Ghana’s young innovators.

  • Meeting with Organised Labour over galamsey is needless – Gyampo to Akufo-Addo

Meeting with Organised Labour over galamsey is needless – Gyampo to Akufo-Addo

President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has criticized the Presidency’s invitation to Organised Labour leaders for discussions on their planned strike against illegal mining, known as galamsey, calling it unnecessary and insincere.

Organised Labour declared its intent to begin an indefinite strike on Tuesday, October 1, citing the government’s failure to address their demands, which include a complete ban on mining and the declaration of a state of emergency to combat galamsey.

In an interview on Citi FM’s Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, October 3, Prof. Gyampo accused the government of handling the situation with Organised Labour in bad faith and lacking proper regard for their concerns.

He expressed his displeasure with the government’s approach, labeling it as “predictable, needless, and bogus.”

“Anytime Labour goes into an agreement with them [the government] and for some reason, they can’t meet the terms, they don’t even have the courtesy to tell us that they cannot meet our demands

“We knew this is what they will be doing. It is so unproductive that they know what to do and they will not do it but go and call you somewhere to discuss issues. They always want to talk to leaders and not problems and that is needless and bogus.”

Prof. Ransford Gyampo also defended Organised Labour’s decision to provide a week’s notice ahead of its indefinite strike starting on October 10.

He explained that the notice period allows the various unions within Organised Labour sufficient time to prepare and follow the necessary procedures before embarking on the strike.

“People who do not know how Organised Labour operates say why didn’t we declare the strike immediately but Organised Labour is made up of other unions and so it is appropriate that we inform those unions appropriately before a major strike.

“There are various processes that are taken before a strike and that is why we are giving a one-week window.”

  • I will drive Akufo-Addo out of his Nima residence if I win power – Osofo Kyiri Abosom

I will drive Akufo-Addo out of his Nima residence if I win power – Osofo Kyiri Abosom

Rev. Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, the flagbearer and founder of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), has declared his intent to remove President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo from his Nima residence if he wins the presidency.

In an interview on Kasapa FM’s Ghana Kasa, Kyiri Abosom claimed that the land on which the president’s current home stands was wrongfully seized by the president’s father during his tenure as ceremonial president in the 1970s.

“You have been seeing Akufo-Addo; he lives very close by. Does he have any vision? If he did, he would not still be living here. Why won’t he be living in his mansion but still living in his father’s house? I will evict him from this area if I become president.

According to the GUM leader, the land on which the president resides was formerly a property of the Nima Police.

However, after becoming Ghana’s ceremonial president, Akufo-Addo’s father took ownership of it and erected the building in which the president resides now.

Rev. Andrews intends to evict the president, seize the land, and extend the Nima Police Station.

“That land belonged to the Nima Police Station before his father [the ceremonial president] took it and built on it. Ask Akufo-Addo; he will tell you that initially, his father was not staying there.

He took that land when he became the ceremonial president. We will take that land back and expand the Nima Police Station. I have the old pictures of what the place used to look like.”

He added that as president, he will not resettle Akufo-Addo, who will then be an ex-president when he evicts him from Nima.

“Why should we get him another place to stay? Has he not made any properties in his life? We have paid you for serving us; why should he accommodate you again when you leave office?

Has the state given any teacher who has taught for years accommodation after retiring? Has the nurse been given accommodation? The president must be able to build with the money he’s paid. I will scrap ex-gratia when I become president,” Osofo Kyiri Abosom stated.

  • Share public information, it isn’t your property – Akufo-Addo to govt officials

Share public information, it isn’t your property – Akufo-Addo to govt officials

President Akufo-Addo has urged public officials to regard public information as a national resource meant for the common good, rather than personal property.

He made this statement during the opening of the International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) in Accra on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, with the address delivered by Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.

In his speech, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the need to go beyond merely enacting laws to mainstream access to information and public participation in governmental activities.

He stated, “We must embed access to information into the very fabric of our public sector institutions. Public officials must recognize that information is not their property to withhold but a public good to be shared freely.”

Highlighting Ghana’s progress in this area, the President remarked, “From the digitisation of public services to the creation of open data platforms, we are working to ensure that the walls of bureaucracy no longer stand in the way of information flow.” However, he acknowledged that while strides had been made, “much more remains to be done,” asserting his commitment to prioritizing access to information in public sector reforms.

He stressed that transforming the culture of governance from secrecy to openness was essential. “It is to ensure that every civil servant understands that their duty is not just to perform tasks behind closed doors but to engage with the public in a manner that fosters trust and collaboration,” he added.

Minister of Information Ms. Fatimatu Abubakar reported significant advancements in transparency since the implementation of Ghana’s Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989). She highlighted the growing awareness of the importance of access to information and the establishment of frameworks by public institutions to comply with the law.

“As we move forward, it is imperative that we mainstream access to information within all public sector institutions,” Ms. Abubakar stated. She called for a culture of openness that transcends mere compliance, urging government agencies to actively publish key documents and records.

Tawfik Jelassi, Acting Director General of Communication and Information at UNESCO, reinforced the importance of providing comprehensive and free access to public information across government levels. He asserted that “access to information was a right that should be provided by all public entities.” Jelassi also noted that the focus of this year’s Global Conference is to ensure that laws regarding access to information become effective game-changers in people’s lives, stating, “It’s not enough to have laws on the books; they must be effectively implemented.”

The collective message from President Akufo-Addo and other speakers at the event underscores the vital role of accessible information in promoting transparency, trust, and effective governance in Ghana.

  • Govt doesn’t support GFA financially – Kurt Okraku

Govt doesn’t support GFA financially – Kurt Okraku

President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku has dismissed accusations suggesting that the government funds the FA.

Such claims frequently emerge during times of poor performance by the national teams, with critics alleging mismanagement of public money by the FA.

In recent times, the FA has faced scrutiny for allegedly exaggerating budget estimates for tournaments to benefit personally.

However, at a hearing before the Parliamentary Select Committee on Monday, Okraku emphasised that the GFA does not manage the finances associated with the national teams.

“For the record, the government of Ghana doesn’t give GFA any money. The Ministry of Youth and Sports funds national team-related activities. No money comes into the GFA’s coffers from the government,” Okraku said.

He explained that the Sports Ministry handles all financial aspects, including budgets and payments for tournaments and qualifiers. An accountant from the Ministry oversees these costs, with the GFA having no involvement.

“Monies used for national teams are paid to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. They make all statutory payments. No cedi comes to the FA,” Okraku added.

Okraku’s testimony before the Parliamentary Select Committee came in response to a petition from the Save Ghana Football group, which organized a protest after the Black Stars’ disappointing performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The group raised several issues, including demands for transparency regarding the funds allocated from the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 AFCON.

They also expressed concerns over the current funding strategy, claiming that an excessive amount of taxpayer money is directed towards the Black Stars, often neglecting other national teams.

The group proposed that the GFA collaborate with the National Sports Authority on financial planning, as the NSA holds legal responsibility for these matters.

  • Numerous warning letters about galamsey were ignored by Akufo-Addo – Ace Ankomah claims

Numerous warning letters about galamsey were ignored by Akufo-Addo – Ace Ankomah claims

Convener of Occupy Ghana, Ace Anan Ankomah, has alleged that President Akufo-Addo ignored multiple letters from the organization regarding the illegal mining (galamsey) crisis, including their most recent correspondence dated September 10, 2024.

Since 2016, Occupy Ghana has consistently raised concerns about the harmful effects of galamsey on Ghana’s environment and water resources. Despite their ongoing efforts, the government has reportedly disregarded these warnings.

In an interview with Channel One TV on Monday, September 30, Ankomah expressed his deep disappointment, emphasizing that the worsening situation could have been avoided had the government acted on their recommendations.

He highlighted the urgent need for the government to recognize the severity of the crisis and take meaningful steps to address it.

Mr Ankomah warned that the unchecked spread of illegal mining could lead to severe ecological, food, and health crises in the country. He stressed that failure to tackle this issue could have devastating consequences for both the environment and citizens.

Advocating for decisive measures, Ankomah called for the confiscation of lands currently being used for galamsey operations to prevent further environmental degradation and protect communities from the negative impacts of illegal mining.

He urged the government to act swiftly, warning that without immediate intervention, the nation could face catastrophic repercussions for generations to come.

“In 2022 alone, we wrote to the president [Akufo-Addo] every week, for eight weeks. On 10th September 2024, we repeated our call. But let’s start from 28th September 2022, we wrote an open letter to the president, saying that this galamsey thing is a problem, put your foot down,” Ankomah recounted.

“3rd October 2022, we wrote a reminder one. This is the one that asked that they declare a state of emergency. 10th October 2022, the next week, we wrote reminder two, pointing out the imminent ecological and food disasters.”

“17th October 2022, the next week, we wrote a reminder three, this is where we advocated for confiscating of galamsey lands. 24th October 2022, we wrote reminder 4, in which we specifically asked the government to take action on the Akonta Mining issue. We were specific, no response, no action.”

“31st October 2022, reminder five, which we call reminder of reminders, no response. 7th November 2022, where we pointed to an imminent health disaster. When we pointed to what we had seen about deformed children and everything, no response.”

“The last one is charity begins at home, November 16, 2022, they didn’t respond. So, our last one, we repeated our call to halt it, which is 10th September 2024. This is just our engagement with the presidency,” Ankomah stated.

Akufo-Addo ‘angry’ after GJA Boss told him to solve galamsey

Social media users assert that President Akufo-Addo is displeased with the President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, who made a comment that tackled the government’s failure to end the menace of illegal mining.

Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, while speaking at the 28th GJA Awards urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to utilize the remaining three months of his second term to address the ongoing crisis of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.

Mr Dwumfour reminded the President of his commitment to halt galamsey upon taking office, noting that this promise remains unfulfilled.

In his address, the GJA President emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We are aware that some time ago, Mr. President, the father of the nation made a promise to stop galamsey but regrettably that promise has not been fulfilled. You are barely three months until the end of your administration and we are hopeful that you will deal with the situation before you leave office.”

Dwumfour proposed declaring a state of emergency as part of the measures needed to combat the galamsey issue in the country.

He declared, “We still maintain that a state of emergency must be declared over our water bodies, and all planned and active mining concessions overlapping with river buffers should be abrogated. All mining activities within 100 meters buffer of all rivers and streams should be halted with immediate effect.” He also called for the immediate repeal of Legislative Instrument (L.I) 2462.

It is reported that after his submission, the GJA President tried engaging the president. Per the video, the President showed some discontent. It is officially unknown what may have prompted the president to be upset with Mr Dwumfuor.

While acknowledging the economic contributions of the mining sector, environmentalists and health professionals have raised concerns about the significant environmental degradation associated with illegal mining. Rivers such as the Bonsa in the Western Region and the Pra in the Ashanti Region have faced severe pollution due to the toxic chemicals used in mining operations.

Additionally, forest reserves like Tano Nimiri in the Western North Region and the Draw River in the Western Region have also been heavily impacted.

There have been increasing calls from the Trades Union Congress and various civil society groups for President Akufo-Addo to implement a ban on all illegal mining activities and declare a state of emergency in the affected regions.

In a related effort, A Rocha Ghana, in collaboration with six other civil society organizations, is taking legal action against the government over illegal mining in forest reserves. This coalition, which includes Kasa Ghana, Eco-Conscious Citizens, Tropenbos, Nature and Development Foundation, Civic Response, and the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, is raising alarms about the severe environmental damage caused by mining in protected areas.

During an emergency press briefing at A Rocha’s headquarters in Accra, Daryl Bossu, Deputy National Director of A Rocha Ghana, highlighted their objective: “Our primary goal is to secure an injunction to stop all mining and prospecting in forest reserves to protect the environment.”

Akufo-Addo described journalists as “gatekeepers of truth,” emphasizing the need to prioritize facts over falsehoods. He recognized the media’s critical role in past elections but also warned of the dangers posed by “fake news and sensationalism in the digital age,” which can distort the electoral process.

“Every four years, Ghanaians go to the polls to choose their leaders, and in that process, the media plays an indispensable role. It’s through your work that citizens are informed about the policies of political parties, the integrity of candidates, and the issues that matter most to their lives,” he said.

He underscored the media’s responsibility during elections, stating, “You have been at the forefront, monitoring polls, reporting on potential irregularities, and ensuring that the voices of the electorates are heard. Peaceful transitions of power that we have been seeing in Ghana are no small part due to the diligence and integrity of the media.”

Highlighting the challenges posed by the digital age, he warned, “While technology has democratised information, it has also created new vulnerabilities. In the age of social media, where information travels faster than ever, journalists must rise to the occasion by being the gatekeepers of the truth, ensuring that facts prevail over falsehoods.”

As the country approaches another election cycle, he called on the media to continue its essential work, urging them to “report with integrity, ensuring fairness in coverage, and providing voters with the accurate, timely, and comprehensive information they need to make informed decisions.”

President Akufo-Addo reiterated, “The stakes are high and your role has never been more crucial. I stand before you not only as a president of the Republic but as someone who has worked alongside the media on this journey to freedom and democracy.”

Reaffirming his commitment to a “free and vibrant press,” he stressed its importance in Ghana’s democracy, particularly as the nation gears up for the 2024 elections.

“I remain deeply committed to ensuring that the media in Ghana remains free, vibrant, and independent. Your work is essential to the strength of our democracy, the integrity of our elections, and the progress of our nation,” he concluded.
