Ghana has become ‘pitiful’ under Akufo-Addo’s govt – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has placed the blame on the Akufo-Addo-led administration for the current setbacks and hardships in the nation.

Despite a gradual decline in the inflation rate, the government appears to be grappling with challenges in revitalizing the economy, marked by an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout, the depreciation of the cedi against major trading currencies, and a worsening unemployment rate, among other issues.

During an address in Wenchi as part of his Building Ghana Tour, John Dramani Mahama attributed Ghana’s current poor state to the leadership failures of the NPP administration.

He expressed the belief that the present government has hindered the nation’s progress, particularly by halting the ongoing developmental projects initiated by the erstwhile Mahama administration.

“People thought there was development and prosperity here, and now we have lost everything. The nation is pitiful, the country is facing hardships, and the economy is bad.”

“I thought they would continue the good work I left behind, but the nation seems to be retrogressing in development,” Mahama complained.

Mr. Mahama reflected on a time when Ghana proudly held the title of the black star of Africa as the first African country to achieve independence. He encouraged the youth to maintain hope in the prospect of a better Ghana, asserting that the NDC is the optimal choice for improved development and growth.

Simultaneously, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate initiated the Building Ghana Tour in the Bono Region on November 17.

“Every aspect of African life tells an imaginative story” – Akufo-Addo shifts focus to film industry

President Akufo-Addo has stated that Ghana’s peaceful environment, rich heritage, and appealing tourist attractions provide the country with an advantage to develop the film industry to a commendable standard.

During the inaugural Africa Cinema Summit in Accra, the President addressed the opening session and emphasized the government’s dedication to collaborating with stakeholders to maximize the country’s potential in the film industry.

“Our country has an abundance of forts and castles, national parks, historic palaces, wildlife and festivals that could be used as backgrounds for films and marketed for tourist purposes,” he noted.

In pursuit of this goal, the President revealed that a favorable fiscal and tax regime for cinema projects is currently in the works and will be introduced soon. The aim is to establish sound infrastructure, positioning the country as the premier destination in Africa for film and content production.

The three-day Africa Cinema Summit, hosted by Ghana and organized by the National Film Authority, FilmHouse Group, and Silverbird Cinema, aligns with the broader vision of the Ghana Cinema Agenda. The Summit addresses crucial issues such as infrastructural gaps and the promotion of a robust cinema-going culture with the ultimate objective of transforming and revitalizing the African film industry.

The Summit serves as a platform for film stakeholders from across Africa to engage in meaningful discussions addressing challenges hindering the sector’s growth, with a focus on finding sustainable solutions. Participants include film authorities, filmmakers, cinema investors, architects, builders, heritage center authorities, distributors, and exhibitors.

“Every aspect of African life tells an imaginative story,” President Nana Akufo-Addo stated.

The President emphasized the significance of the arts, culture, and heritage of the African people, highlighting their unique nature as a connection to the past. He noted that this connection reinforces awareness of the present and charts a path for evolution in the future.

“It is a compass from which we can trace and examine our history, which creates a critical role in our modern society, politics, businesses and our daily realities,” he noted.

The President expressed that Africa’s film industry holds the potential to provide employment for approximately 20 million people and contribute around US$20 billion to the continent’s economy.

“Africa will have about 70 per cent of the global youth population by 2050, indicating that both the cinema world and the continent need each other,” he said.

The President commended the organizers of the Summit for their initiative and expressed hope that the participants would effectively bring to light the crucial issues hindering the film industry, paving the way for solutions.

Ms. Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante, CEO of the National Film Authority and Convener of the Summit, highlighted the immense potential of the film and creative industry, citing a 2021 UNESCO report. However, she expressed sadness at the continent’s limited utilization of these prospects, pointing out that fewer than 1,700 screens serve the entire continent, home to approximately 1.4 billion people.

“This means that more than 80 per cent of the population has never experienced a cinema outing,” she lamented.

Ms. Juliet Yaa Asantewaa Asante emphasized that a thriving film market holds the promise of numerous opportunities for the industry. These include job creation, economic growth, community development, and the global dissemination of the rich Ghanaian and African narrative.

Go for leaders with competency, track record and not those who make tribal comments – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has issued a caution to Ghanaians, urging them to be vigilant against politicians who attempt to exploit tribal and religious sentiments for personal gain.

The President emphasized that such individuals contribute nothing constructive to the nation, particularly in the context of strengthening multiparty democracy, embracing diversity, and fostering peace and unity.

Speaking during the inauguration of an e-library project in Bantama, Kumasi, on Wednesday, November 15, President Akufo-Addo advised the electorate to reject politicians who employ divisive tactics as the 2024 general election approaches. He emphasized the importance of selecting leaders based on competence, a solid track record, and unwavering integrity.

President Akufo-Addo emphasised, “What matters most is that we give the nod to leaders whose competency, track record, and integrity cannot be doubted. We cannot entrust the destiny of the nation into the hands of incompetent leaders to the detriment of our sustainable growth.”

Highlighting the crucial significance of the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that they would profoundly influence the trajectory of the nation’s development agenda.

Expressing confidence in the choice of Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the presidential candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), the President cited his experience, expertise, and proven track record.

President Akufo-Addo described Dr. Bawumia as a man of substance and honesty, someone trustworthy to successfully lead the nation. He urged the electorate to support the NPP in the upcoming polls, underlining the party’s dedication to Ghana’s development and growth.

Commending the Member of Parliament for Bantama and Minister of Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, for the construction of the e-library project, President Akufo-Addo encouraged the community to take ownership of the initiative.

He also called on the residents to grant Mr. Asenso-Boakye another mandate in the upcoming elections to continue promoting their welfare and well-being.

Mr. Asenso-Boakye highlighted that the e-library project exemplifies the government’s vision to enhance the standard of education for the benefit of Ghanaian youth.

Akufo-Addo envisions Ghana as a leading exporter of agricultural products

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is optimistic about Ghana’s potential to emerge as a global leader in agricultural exports.

Despite current economic challenges, he highlighted the country’s progress in recent years and projected transformative economic growth.

During the commissioning of new Gentry Cranes and Works at the Tema Harbour, the president emphasized the government’s focus on the agriculture sector as a key driver for improving and revitalizing the Ghanaian economy.

“In the face of global upheaval and disruptions in world food supply systems, Ghana has become resilient due to the measures that we have put in place. I firmly believe that Ghana has the potential to become a world-leading exporter of agricultural produce, thanks in part to favourable weather conditions, ample water supply, and fertile lands.”

“However, what we have lacked over the years is a modernized and robust logistics channel infrastructure required to help realize this potential,” the president added.

Additionally, he said that the Cedi’s stability and the decline in inflation are unmistakable signs that the government is trying to boost the economy.

You fought a good fight and deserve the victor’s crown: Akufo-Addo’s tribute to the late Theresa Kufuor

On that fateful night of Sunday 1 October, I had gone to the residence of President Kufuor in Peduase to, as it were, catch up with him, since it had been a while I had visited him at his residence.

At the end of our discussion, he gave me the unpleasant news, one he had dreaded for some time. His beloved wife, Mrs Theresa Kufuor, our nation’s former First Lady, had died that morning. I was deeply saddened by the news of her death.

Her passing reminds me keenly of human mortality, that is, that Almighty God will come for each and every one of us at the appropriate time. I am grateful to Providence that our lives crossed. She fought a good fight, and deserves the victor’s crown. Hers was a life well-lived.

Mama Theresa, as she was affectionately called by most people, Aba to me, was a devoted companion of President Kufuor throughout their 61 years of marriage. She was an invaluable and constant source of advice, encouragement and prayers for him.

Member of a well-known family from Odumase, in the Bono Region, and Bantama in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region, sister of the renowned statesman, the late J H Mensah, and aunt of President Kufuor’s Secretary, the brilliant diplomat, Ambassador D K Osei, she was politically astute, and was a major contributor to her husband’s political success. She was a composed and articulate First Lady, polyglot, fluent in several languages including Ewe, who brought great dignity to the position.

I knew several members of her family, especially her celebrated brother, and I am grateful that I had the opportunity to know her too.

Her warmth, kindness and grace were exceptional. She bore the vicissitudes of life with great stoicism and an unshakable belief in the sovereignty of Almighty God. My wife, Rebecca, the First Lady, our family and I will miss her a lot.

We extend our deepest condolences to President Kufuor, their children, grandchildren, and their families on their irreplaceable loss.

We wish her a peaceful place of abode in the Bosom of the Almighty, as she deserves, until the Last Day of the Resurrection when we shall all meet again. Amen!!

  • Names of Akufo-Addo’s budgets from 2017 till now

Over the course of seven years, the Akufo-Addo-led government has consistently presented its financial plan, delineating expected income and expenses for a specific period.

The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been the bearer of these budget statements, presenting them in Parliament on behalf of the government.

From 2017 to the present, seven distinct budget statements have been presented, each given a unique title. Despite the differences in titles, they all share a common theme: inspiring hope among the many Ghanaians facing challenges due to the country’s economic conditions.

Check out the names of the budget statements.

2017 – Asempa budget (good word budget)

2018 – Adwumapa budget (good work budget)

2019 – Mpuntuo budget (development budget)

    2020 – Nkosuo budget ( progressive budget)

2021 – Obatanpa budget ( good mother budget)

2022 – Agyenkwa budget (saviour budget)

2023 – Nkabom budget (unity budget)

2024 – Nkunim budget (victory budget)

Since 2020, Ghana has experienced a significant decline in its economic growth, primarily attributed to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. As time has progressed, the situation has further deteriorated due to additional factors such as the Russia-Ukraine war, internal issues like excessive borrowing, and corruption.

This challenging economic environment has sparked frustration among a segment of the public, particularly regarding the names given to government budgets. Critics argue that these titles do not accurately reflect the reality on the ground, which includes high inflation rates, elevated interest rates, unemployment, and other pressing issues.

Waakye seller insulted for bearing same surname as Akufo-Addo

A waakye seller based in Osu has opened up about facing criticism and insults due to sharing the surname “Akufo” with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The trader claims that customers have connected her to the president and expressed their frustrations about economic challenges.

In an interview on GhOne TV, she highlighted how the economic struggles reflected in marketplaces directly impact her business, citing the surge in the cost of living.

She specifically pointed fingers at President Akufo-Addo’s administration, stating that the current state of the economy is making it increasingly difficult for her to sustain her livelihood.

“Go to the market and go and check, the economy is not going well …he should go and ask quickly about the kind of loans I use to sell the food here …if he is listening, I am also called Akufo and he is having the same name as Akufo-Addo, the kind of life that he is living is it good for him?

“Every day they insult me that my father is not performing,” she said.

The Ghanaian economy has become a prominent subject of discussion in recent months, marked by challenges such as surging inflation, a depreciating currency, and a widespread decline in the quality of life, accompanied by a high cost of living.

The government has consistently attributed these economic challenges to the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Last year, in response to these difficulties, the government secured a US$3 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The first tranche of this loan, amounting to US$600 million, has already been credited to the government’s account.

I will be back – Kenneth Kuranchie after Supreme Court losing case against Mahama

After the Supreme Court dismissed his application challenging the eligibility of former President John Dramani Mahama to contest the 2024 elections, Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie, the Managing Editor of the Daily Searchlight, has affirmed his determination to rectify the errors in his suit and refile it in court.

The Supreme Court declared Kuranchie’s application defective on Tuesday, November 14.

Despite the setback, Kuranchie, who is also a private legal practitioner, spoke to reporters, acknowledging the discussions around the potential outcome and maintaining a resilient stance.

“We have been having discussions about this process for about two weeks now, and this was envisaged as a possible outcome. As lawyers, when we come to court, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but if you take it along in your stride, then you hope for a better day,” 3news.com quoted him to have said.

While admitting that oversights can occur in legal processes, he assured that he would correct the errors in his documents and return them to court.

“Sometimes these oversights happen. I shall be contesting primaries, after the primaries, on December 2, I will have more time to correct the documents and come back.”

The journalist-turned-politician, Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie, initiated legal action against the former president in June 2023, challenging his eligibility for another presidential candidacy. In his court filing, he sought a clear interpretation of Article 66 (1) of the 1992 Constitution, specifically addressing the presidential term duration of four years.

Kuranchie argued that a proper interpretation of Article 62 of the Constitution would imply that a former Ghanaian president is not qualified to seek re-election.

Consequently, he urged the court to bar John Mahama from pursuing his presidential aspirations.

However, in a Supreme Court ruling on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, the court dismissed the suit, affirming that the former president, John Dramani Mahama, is eligible to run in the 2024 General Elections.

  • Ghana’s economy will be valued at GHC1 trillion under Akufo-Addo – Ken Ofori-Atta

Ghana’s economy will be valued at GHC1 trillion under Akufo-Addo – Ken Ofori-Atta

The Ghanaian economy is expected to be valued at over GH¢1 trillion in 2024 under the administration of President Akufo-Addo, according to the Finance Minister.

Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta made the projection during his presentation of the 2024 budget statement in Parliament today.

According to him, from the GH¢219.5 billion Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2016, the economy will increase by over GH¢750 billion.

“Mr. Speaker, the 2024 Budget is even more significant because we will cross the GH¢1 trillion Gross Domestic Product (GDP) mark for the first time in our economic history.

“Let me repeat, Mr. Speaker, Ghana’s economy under President Akufo-Addo’s final year in office is projected to be valued over GH¢1
trillion in 2024 from the GH¢219.5 billion in 2016,” he said.

He noted that the government’s task now and in the medium-term is two-fold: to maintain stability and to keep on growing.

“We are determined to remain on this course of increased growth, currency stability, and disinflation over the medium-term. Our future
    growth prospects are certainly brighter.

He expressed optimism that the ”Nkunim” Budget will ensure that “we boldly walk on a sustainable path toward creating decent jobs and wealth for our people.”

“For with national dedication, the Lord will continue to give us treasures of dark places and hidden riches in secret places,” he added.

Akufo-Addo can’t redeem himself, it is impossible – Haruna Iddrisu

Member of Parliament for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu, expressed the view that it is too late for President Akufo-Addo to salvage the economy.

Mr Iddrisu argued that the ruling New Patriotic Party had spent the past seven years negatively impacting the nation’s economy, and correcting these mistakes in just one fiscal year would be practically impossible.

He made the statement ahead of the presentation of the 2024 budget and economic plan by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

On Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, the former Minority Leader stated that achieving such a feat would require a miracle. He urged Ghanaians to temper their expectations ahead of the budget reading.

“If you use seven years to create this distress how are you going to use one year to redeem? Practically impossible  and therefore your expectation should be one where too little too late, he simply has no time to redeem given the monumental damage they have done to our economic score card whether it’s inflation ending 2022 at more than 50%, today around 40%, interest rate unacceptably high, depreciation of the cedi,” he said.

Mr Haruna Iddrisu expressed disappointment, stating that while he had hoped the budget would outline a path toward private sector-driven economic growth, indications of more revenue mobilization and new taxes suggest otherwise.

He urged Ghanaians to prepare for the challenges of the upcoming fiscal year.

He said, “We will reel under some extreme hardship. Poverty as reported by ISSER and many other international bodies including the world bank has increased and post covid, we’re not seeing the kind of economic interventions that will spur growths and therefore growth has stunted over the years since 2020 and it’s likely to remain same.”

It’s time for you to apologise to “the entire continent of Africa” for slave crimes – Akufo-Addo to European nations

President Akufo-Addo is calling for a formal apology and reparations from the Western world, condemning the inhumane treatment Africans endured during the slave trade.

He asserts that Africa deserves compensation for the human rights abuses suffered under slave masters.

Speaking at the inaugural Accra Reparation Conference, President Akufo-Addo emphasised the necessity of reparations, stating that European countries involved in the slave trade must apologise for the crimes committed against Africans.

“It is time for Africa, thirty million of whose sons and daughters had their freedoms curtailed and sold into slavery, to also receive reparations.

“No amount of money can restore the damage caused by the Transatlantic Slave Trade and its consequences, which spanned many centuries, but surely, this is a matter that the world must confront and can no longer ignore.”

“And even before these discussions on reparations conclude, the entire continent of Africa deserves a formal apology from the European nations involved in the slave trade.”

President Akufo-Addo is preparing to convene the Accra Reparations Conference, scheduled from November 14th to 17th, 2023.

Under the theme “Building a United Front to Advance the Cause of Justice and the Payment of Reparations to Africans,” the four-day event will assemble Heads of State and Governments from both Africa and the Diaspora, accompanied by esteemed figures from academia, legal backgrounds, and civil society organizations.

The conference aims to foster dialogue, exchange knowledge, and strategize actionable approaches across a diverse spectrum of stakeholders.

These efforts are aimed at addressing historical injustices that have transpired throughout significant periods, including the eras of slave trade, segregation, colonialism, apartheid, as well as the implications of neo-colonialism and neo-liberalism.

The distinguished lineup of leaders slated to participate includes Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of Comoros and Chairperson of the African Union; President Faure Essozimna Gnassigbé of Togo; General Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau; Prime Minister Gervais Ndirakobuca of Burundi; and Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, among a host of other global figures.

Akufo-Addo’s 5 measures to achieve global peace

During the 2023 Paris Peace Forum, President Akufo-Addo laid out five key avenues to ensure global peace and security.

His proposal encompassed two economic aspects, one focused on climate issues, and two related to global governance and multilateralism.

The president shared these insights in a Facebook post on November 11.

“As we strive for a more peaceful world, in which every citizen should have the opportunity to develop fully their potential and contribute to global stability and prosperity, I see five minimum conditions for success,” he stressed before listing the conditions which are as follows:

    Firstly, we should, as a matter of urgency, reform the global financial architecture because the current system is not fit-for-purpose when it comes to addressing inequalities;

    Secondly, we should foster economic equity, and promote inclusive economic growth by investing in education, healthcare, and social safety nets to ensure that everyone, everywhere, has an equal opportunity to prosper;

    Thirdly, we should hold leaders accountable, enforced through transparent governance, strong civil societies, and independent media;

Fourthly, we should encourage global security and climate action as the basis for sustained economic development. Conflicts perpetuate inequalities, and their prevention should be a global priority. Simultaneously, we must take meaningful steps to combat climate change and support climate adaptation, while transitioning to sustainable, green economies; and

Fifthly, we should reform the institutions of global governance, particularly the UN Security Council, which is responsible for the maintenance of international peace and security, and correct the longstanding injustice that the current structure and composition of the Council represent, especially for the nations of Africa. We cannot continue to preach democracy and fairness around the world, we cannot insist on peace and justice around the world, when our global security organisation is not seen by the majority of its members as having a structure that is effective, fair and just.

Akufo-Addo’s govt on autopilot but Gabby, Ofori-Atta are those in charge – Edudzi Tameklo

Head of the legal team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Godwin Edudzi Tameklo, has criticized President Akufo-Addo’s administration, labeling it as an “auto-pilot system of government.”

Tameklo claimed that the President has delegated his duties to family members within his administration, displaying a lack of concern for the welfare of Ghanaians.

Echoing sentiments from a recent article by a former minister, he agreed that the government is primarily centered around family, friends, and associates, terming it a “family and friends and concubines administration.”

Speaking in an interview on TV XYZ on November 10, 2023, he stated, “Akufo-Addo’s government that he is leading is on auto-pilot.

“He is not the one managing the economy; he has entrusted the economy to individuals like Gabby, Bediatuo, Ken Ofori-Atta, and other family members to oversee the country’s affairs.

“He simply takes breakfast and sleeps, while his family members manage the economy. Those we didn’t vote for are now part of the administration, as Frimpong Boateng stated, friends, family, and concubines administration. He was part of the administration and he has come out to say that the government is composed of family, friends, and concubines.”

There have been reports from the opposition NDC about prominent NPP member, Gabby Otchere Darko’s influence in the current government. There have been no substantive evidence but reports have it that he has behind a number of significant deals in the country.

Former Environment Minister, Professor Frimpong-Boateng has accused him of assisting illegal mining activities in the country but that claim has been refuted by Mr Otchere.

With regards to Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, President Akufo-Addo’s refusal to relieve him of his duties owing to Ghana’s economic crisis, have left many wondering. Some believe he has some leverage on the president while others believe he is covering up some unlawful issues for the president.

None of these claims have been substantiated.

Akufo-Addo vows to give all to make Bawumia president in 2024

On November 4, 2023, at the Accra Sports Stadium, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed his unwavering dedication to ensuring the triumph of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the forthcoming 2024 general elections.

This commitment was made during the official unveiling of Dr. Bawumia as the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

President Akufo-Addo underscored the party’s strong commitment to democracy and commended the transparent nature of the flagbearer election process that led to Dr. Bawumia’s selection.

He urged the people of Ghana not to permit the leadership of John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to return to power for a second term.

He stated, “You have shown that today, Ghana’s democracy is safe in your hands. I am confident that Mahamudu Bawumia will unite the party with the assistance of Ken Agyapong, Addai-Nimoh, Afriyie Akoto, and others.

“The second message, a very simple one, is congratulations to the flagbearer, Mr. Vice President Flagbearer. Today I’m passing on the flagbearer of our party to a new leader. I want to thank everyone here for the honour done to me to serve my party and to serve the people of this great country.”

He added, “I have done my best, but I still have one more task to do, and that is, with all my strength and all my energy, to help the new flagbearer, Mahamudu Bawumia, win the election of 2024.

“Ghana cannot afford the return of the NDC, especially under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama,” he charged.

After a 16-year tenure, Akufo-Addo passed on the leadership of the NPP to Bawumia. Akufo-Addo had held the position of the party’s leader since 2007. In accordance with the NPP’s constitution, Dr. Bawumia, following his victory in the presidential primaries, assumes the role of the new party leader.

Dr. Bawumia secured his victory with 61.43% of the total votes, with Kennedy Agyapong, his closest rival, receiving 37.41% of the vote share.

The other two contestants, Dr. Afriyie Akoto and Francis Addai Nimo, received 0.75% and 0.41% of the vote, respectively.

“So, let’s all be together, all of us have to be one and go and campaign hard. It won’t be easy, the election we are heading towards won’t be easy for us but I have the hope that if we are to be united and have the courage God will open the way for us to secure victory on 7 December 2024,” he said.

He stressed the importance of preventing the return of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to power for a second term, particularly under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama.

“Ghana cannot afford the return of the NDC, especially under the leadership of John Dramani Mahama,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo has officially passed the leadership of the NPP to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, marking the conclusion of his 16-year tenure. President Akufo-Addo held this position within the party since 2007.

According to the NPP’s constitution, Dr. Bawumia, having emerged victorious in the presidential primaries, takes over the role as the new leader of the party.

“You want me to talk about this here? Today?!” – Akufo-Addo’s terse reply to economy question in NPP race

In the thick of the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer election, President Nana Akufo-Addo offered a decisive retort to a journalist’s probe about the state of the national economy following his vote.

When pressed about the potential victor in the race, he maintained, “The one that the grassroots of our party want is the one who will win.”

However, the atmosphere took a pointed turn when the conversation shifted towards the nation’s economic performance. Faced with a question on his administration’s economic stewardship, Akufo-Addo‘s response was notably terse: “You want me to come and have this interview here? Today?”

This stern interjection was swiftly followed by a smile before he took his leave, settling into his vehicle.

Since assuming office in 2017, Akufo-Addo’s tenure has been marked by efforts to revitalize the economy, dealing with challenges such as inflationary pressures, currency fluctuation, and the recent global economic impacts.

    Akufo-Addo is not a sleeping President – Palgrave Boakye-Danquah

Government’s spokesman for governance and security, Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has described President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo as is a strong and determined politician who pays close attention to the smallest details of governance and ensures they are addressed thoroughly.

According to him, Ghanaians should express their gratitude for the government’s efforts in mitigating the challenges brought about by the Russian-Ukraine war and the global pandemic.

“President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo is not a weak politician. He is a very tough politician. He is not a sleeping president. He is a president that takes to the latter the very details that are needed, ” he told the media.

A few months ago, Mr. Boakye-Danquah issued a warning to politicians, advising them against openly displaying physical cash in public places.

He argued that such a show of opulence exposed them to high risks.

In Palgrave’s perspective, politicians who engage in such behavior, claiming it is to attract delegates’ votes or showcase their wealth to the general public, inadvertently make themselves vulnerable to various risks, including robbery.

During an appearance on GHOne’s current affairs program, “The Breakfast Review,” on Monday, Mr. Boakye-Danquah extended his caution to the general public, urging them to refrain from adopting such practices that are gradually seeping into Ghanaian society, particularly in the realm of politics.

I still love him – Apostle Owusu-Bempah talks about Akufo-Addo

Founder and leader of the Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Apostle Dr. Isaac Owusu-Bempah, recently opened up about his unwavering affection for President Nana Akufo-Addo, despite unmet expectations.

Speaking on OkayFM’s ‘Ade Ahye Abia’ with host Kwame Nkrumah Tikese, Owusu-Bempah clarified misconceptions about his support for Akufo-Addo and the ruling party, NPP.

Owusu-Bempah asserted, “To say that I aligned myself with the NPP or did something for Akufo-Addo expecting him to build my church if he won, and that I am now bitter because it didn’t happen, is far from the truth. I don’t even entertain such thoughts. If they had done it for me, I would have thanked God. If they didn’t, I still love them. The love I had for them from the beginning remains the same. Whenever I kneel down in prayer, I still remember him [Akufo-Addo] in my prayers.”

The reverend recounted his past dedication to the NPP’s leadership, praying thrice weekly for nine months, with Nana Akufo-Addo and his wife actively participating.

“In fact, it was his wife who made the promise first, saying, ‘If, by God’s grace, we win the 2016 elections, we will build your church for you.’ I responded with ‘Glory be to God.’ However, I did not rely on or excessively expect it. That’s why I am not concerned and have never complained, and I never will.”

Owusu-Bempah also mentioned that he has distanced himself from visiting Akufo-Addo, stating, “I no longer go to him or and even if they call for me, I will not go. No matter how many times they ask, I will not go.”

Reflecting on past encounters, he shared, “There was one occasion when I was summoned, and out of respect for the person who requested my presence, I went. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have gone. That’s the truth.”

He added another instance when he attended an event due to respect for the archbishop, not expecting the presence of political figures such as the vice president.

Emphasising his independence, Owusu-Bempah said, “I did not support them with prayers in exchange for a pledge to build my church if they won. They made the promise themselves, not me. So, I am not worried if it didn’t happen.” He expressed his reliance on divine providence rather than human promises, affirming his faith that “it is God’s temple, and in His own time, He will glorify His name.”

The Paramount Chief of Nsein Traditional Area in the Western region, Awulae Agyefi Kwame, has criticized the Akufo-Addo-led administration for the deplorable state of roads in the region, particularly emphasizing the ongoing issues with the Takoradi to Agona-Nkwanta road, which frequently experiences blockages due to its deteriorating condition.

Awulae Agyefi Kwame expressed disappointment that the Western Region has not witnessed the promised improvements under the Four-more-for-Nana initiative, as the current government appears to have allowed the region’s road infrastructure to deteriorate significantly.

He stated, “As for the Western region, our major problem is the poor nature of our roads, anybody who drives on the Agona Nkwanta road will notice how bad they are. I wonder if they are the same roads that Akufo-Addo plans to drive on to campaign.

“Under this NPP government, if we are being truthful, the roads in the Western region have all rotten. The government’s failure on the side of the Western region simply put, the four more for Nana has been a disaster for the Western region. When you look at the minerals from the Western region this should not be our reward.

“The voice of the Western region has not been heard under this Nana Akufo-Addo and Bawumia government and we must speak up or else all our roads will completely deteriorate.”

Speaking to Kwame Nkrumah Tikese on OkayFM’s ‘Ade Ahye Abia’, Owusu-Bempah detailed his current stance regarding his involvement with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leaders.

“I no longer go to him, and even if they call for me, I will not go. No matter how many times they ask, I will not go,” Owusu-Bempah stated, emphasizing the decisiveness of his withdrawal. He admitted attending past meetings, one out of respect for an unnamed individual and another due to the archbishop’s request, not the political leaders themselves. “If I had known they would be there, I wouldn’t have gone,” he added.

Owusu-Bempah also reflected on the time leading up to the 2016 elections when he engaged in dedicated prayer sessions for the NPP leaders, including Nana Akufo-Addo and his wife.

“It is true that, for nine months, I used to pray for the NPP leaders, thrice every week, and Nana Akufo-Addo was part of this process,” he confirmed. During this period, Akufo-Addo’s wife made a promise to build a church if they won the elections, to which he simply responded, “Glory be to God.”

However, the cleric clarified that his prayers were not contingent on the fulfillment of this promise. “However, I did not rely on or excessively expect it. That’s why I am not concerned and have never complained, and I never will,” he elaborated, negating any accusations of bitterness over the unfulfilled promise. His financial ethics within his ministry were also highlighted, noting, “I am also someone who doesn’t like to forcefully extract money from people.”

If they didn’t, I still love them,” he affirmed, stressing his ongoing prayers for the President.

He reinforced his belief in divine rather than human promises. “If people make promises to me, I don’t rely on them. I look up to God because only His promises are sacred,” Owusu-Bempah stated, indicating his ultimate trust remains with the higher power.

Owusu-Bempah reveals what he did for Akufo-Addo and NPP before 2016 victory

Founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Reverend Isaac Owusu-Bempah, has in a candid interview on OkayFM with Kwame Nkrumah Tikese, host of ‘Ade Ahye Abia’, made some enlightening revelations regarding his interactions with some leaders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) before their 2016 election victory.

Reverend Owusu-Bempah confirmed that he consistently prayed for the NPP leaders and Nana Akufo-Addo, as well as Akufo-Addo’s wife, throughout a period of nine months leading up to the elections.

“It is true that, for nine months, I used to pray for the NPP leaders, thrice every week, and Nana Akufo-Addo was part of this process. His wife was also involved,” he disclosed.

Interestingly, he mentioned a promise made by Akufo-Addo’s wife, who assured him of a church building as a token of gratitude should they win the elections. He recalled her words: “If, by God’s grace, we win the 2016 elections, we will build your church for you.” To which he replied, “Glory be to God.”

Despite the promise, Owusu-Bempah expressed no hard feelings over the unmaterialised pledge. “However, I did not rely on or excessively expect it. That’s why I am not concerned and have never complained, and I never will,” he stated.

The clergyman also clarified that his prayers were not a quid pro quo for the promised church building. “In any case, I did not support them with prayers in exchange for a pledge to build my church if they won. They made the promise themselves, not me. So, I am not worried if it didn’t happen,” he explained.

He underscored his ultimate faith in divine rather than human promises. “If people make promises to me, I don’t rely on them. I look up to God because only His promises are sacred,” Owusu-Bempah affirmed.

Emphasizing his principled approach to ministry and finances, Owusu-Bempah shared his philosophy regarding monetary contributions. “Because it is God’s temple, and in His own time, He will glorify His name. I am also someone who doesn’t like to forcefully extract money from people. I am very disciplined in that regard,” he asserted.

Addressing speculations about any resentment due to unfulfilled promises, he categorically dismissed such claims. “…to say that I aligned myself with the NPP or did something for Akufo-Addo expecting him to build my church if he won, and that I am now bitter because it didn’t happen, is far from the truth,” he remarked.

Although the promise was not kept, Owusu-Bempah maintains a steadfast affection for the party and its leaders. “If they had done it for me, I would have thanked God. If they didn’t, I still love them. The love I had for them from the beginning remains the same,” he commented, adding that he continues to pray for Akufo-Addo.

“I don’t even entertain such thoughts. If they had done it for me, I would have thanked God. If they didn’t, I still love them. The love I had for them from the beginning remains the same. Whenever I kneel down in prayer, I still remember him [Akufo-Addo] in my prayers,” he said.

Owusu-Bempah, however says, he has decided not to indulge in any future engagements with Akufo-Addo and his close circle.

“However, I no longer approach him, and even if they request my presence, I will not go,” he said, noting that past attendances were out of respect for others, not due to any political affiliations.

“No matter how many times they ask, I will not go. There was one occasion when I was summoned, and out of respect for the person who requested my presence, I went. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have gone. That’s the truth. There was a time when I was invited, and I went because of the archbishop, not because of them. I didn’t even know they would be there. When I arrived, the vice president and several other people were present. If I had known they would be there, I wouldn’t have gone.” he noted.

The Paramount Chief of Nsein Traditional Area in the Western Region, Awulae Agyefi Kwame, has noted that the Akufo-Addo-led administration has been the worst government he has encountered.

He specifically pointed out the deplorable state of roads in the region, emphasizing that President Akufo-Addo’s second term has been a disappointment to him and his people.

During a press conference at his palace on Tuesday, October 31, the chief highlighted the ongoing issues with the Takoradi to Agona-Nkwanta road, which has faced intermittent blockages due to its deteriorating condition.

Akufo-Addo has not failed and disappointed Ghanaians – Ashanti Regional Minister

Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, is of the assertion that President Akufo-Addo has not let Ghanaians down in his seven years of government.

OccupyGhana and other CSOs and individuals have expressed their concern during these challenging times when Ghana’s economy is facing significant challenges, leading to considerable hardships for the population.

They have voiced their disappointment, stating that President Akufo Addo has not demonstrated effective leadership in managing the country’s affairs.

But when asked during an interview on Hello FM whether he believes that President Akufo-Addo has failed Ghanaians, Simon Osei Mensah said, “No.”

He argued that the government is not to blame for certain happenings such as COVID-19, but has done its best to check the problem.

“If you are there, and all of a sudden you fall ill. Everyone knows that this is your size and structure and you fall ill and as a result of the sickness, the person has lost weight. Do you say it is the person’s fault that he or she is sick.”

“Not everything is faith and it is not everything you can avoid. I don’t think China even knew how they contracted the virus. As we speak, there are several theories.”

According to Simon Osei Mensah, admitting that the president failed would be tantamount to his own failure.

“So I will not stand anywhere and say President Akufo-Addo has failed. Because if he has failed, so have I. I am a Regional Minister. I am supposed to chase projects for the region so now that there is hardship and contractor for Kejetia market phase 2 has left the site, which I am not happy about, but due to circumstances, then I say I am the cause of the problem. Am I the one who brought the hardship?” he added.

Former President John Dramani Mahama, on this matter, has said he is not happy that President Akufo-Addo’s government has failed to deliver.

He said this government “has been clueless and, in many ways, callous.”

“We are saddled with debt, and we have been downgraded by every rating agency, and inflation has gone off the roof, sending people into abject poverty,” he added whilst launching his campaign bid to contest for the flagbearer position of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ho in the Volta Region on March 2, 2023.

Akufo-Addo honours 2023 NSMQ finale as Special Guest

President Akufo-Addo will on Monday, October 30, attend the grand finale of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) at the National Theatre in Accra.

For the first time, President Akufo-Addo, as a Special Guest is set to address the audience at the NSMQ as it commemorates its 30th anniversary.

The final contest features Presbyterian Boys Senior High School, Achimota School and Opoku Ware Senior High School.

Meanwhile, an interlocutory injunction application has been filed at a High Court to prevent Primetime Limited from organising the grand finale of the 2023 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) as scheduled.

In a writ sighted by The Independent Ghana on social media, the plaintiff whose identity is currently unknown and is represented by Kwame Boateng Atuahene, Esp, wants the court to halt the organising of the finale until the “final determination of the matter in terms of the affidavit in support.”

The said affidavit is not privy to the media or the public. However, Prempeh College and Primetime Limited have engaged in a disagreement over a riddle for which clues were given that point to the linear superposition principle during the semifinal stage contest that saw Opoku Ware School beat Prempeh College.

In response to the school’s petition, which claimed that the principle of superposition is the same as the principle of linear superposition, Primetime Limited noted that the Quiz Mistress, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, exercises discretion on whether an answer provided by a contestant is sufficiently responsive and would have accepted the answer given by the Prempeh College contestants if, in her professional opinion, the target key and the answer given by the contestants were synonymous.

The statement signed by Managing Director of Primetime Limited, Nana Mensa-Bonsu, noted that Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann did not in this case, opting instead to maintain the more precise original key.

In response to Primetime Limited’s statement, Prempeh College reaffirmed their belief that the answer provided by their contestant was accurate. They clarified that they did not concur with the NSMQ’s consultant when the issue was initially discussed at the contest venue.

“Given that we may have reached an impasse we request that an independent consultant or body be engaged to bring finality to this matter since one cannot be a judge in his own matter. We are resolute in our minds that our answer is correct, and we will take all available steps and means including legal, if necessary, to ensure that Prempeh College and its contestants are given a fair hearing,” the school’s statement added.

“She was a model of traditional dignity and elegance.”

Naa Dedei Ablah, known as the Ga Manye, passed away at the age of 88 on December 26, 2022. Having been enstooled in 1963, she exemplified a deep understanding of Ga traditions and a commitment to equity, particularly in the context of women’s welfare.

Her reign was marked by a dedication to public and voluntary service, with a focus on promoting peace, education and opportunities for young people, especially girls.

The event saw economic activities at the Accra Central Business District (CBD) come to a halt as shops were closed to reflect to state of mourning.

This followed a directive from the Ga Traditional Council.

Per the funeral arrangements, a thanksgiving service will be held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral of the Anglican Church, on Sunday, October 29, followed by further traditional rites.

79% of Ghanaians express support for Akufo-Addo despite economic challenges – Report

In the midst of Ghana’s ongoing economic challenges, a recent poll of party delegates has brought to light a remarkable revelation that President Akufo-Addo continues to enjoy strong support within his own party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The extensive survey, which gathered the views of more than 4,300 NPP delegates from across the nation, has disclosed that an astonishing 79% of respondents express approval of the President’s performance.

Conducted by Global Info Analytics from October 2 to 11, this poll takes on added significance as the NPP prepares to choose its next presidential candidate in the upcoming November 4th elections.

Akufo-Addo’s remarkable job approval rating is especially noteworthy considering Ghana’s ongoing economic challenges, marked by soaring inflation and currency depreciation.

The data indicates that the party’s base remains firmly behind their leader, even in times of adversity, demonstrating a steadfast confidence in his leadership.

As the NPP gears up for a challenging re-election campaign in 2024, unity and cohesion around President Akufo-Addo become of paramount importance.

The party aims to avoid any public discord or disagreements regarding the President’s economic management, which have arisen in recent times.

This is despite recent public criticism of government policies by dissenting candidate and former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan Kyerematen, and the immediate past Agriculture Minister and NPP Presidential hopeful, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto.

What remains uncertain is whether this public display of support will translate into votes for the establishment candidate, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia.

While the NPP’s presidential race remains wide open, with the Vice President leading at 43.5% among delegates, the prominent emergence of MP Kennedy Agyapong, boasting 23.5% support, promises an electrifying and closely contested contest in the future.

Whoever secures the NPP nomination will undoubtedly depend on the President’s wholehearted endorsement to revitalize the party’s prospects and guide Ghana toward economic recovery.

If the insights gleaned from the delegates’ poll are any indication, Nana Akufo-Addo may play a pivotal role in determining the NPP’s future success, a factor that could prove critical as the nation approaches the 2024 elections.

NPP base still stand behind Akufo-Addo despite economic crisis – Report

A recent poll conducted among New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates has unveiled a remarkable revelation that President Nana Akufo-Addo continues to command strong support within his party.

The comprehensive survey, which gathered the opinions of over 4,300 NPP delegates from across the country, revealed that an impressive 79% of respondents approve of the President’s performance in his role.

This poll, conducted by Global Info Analytics between October 2 and 11, holds significant importance as the NPP prepares to choose its next presidential candidate in the upcoming November 4th elections.

Akufo-Addo’s remarkable job approval rating stands out, especially given Ghana’s current economic challenges marked by rising inflation rates and currency depreciation. The data suggests that the party’s base remains firmly behind their leader even in times of adversity, demonstrating unwavering confidence in his leadership.

As the NPP gears up for a challenging re-election campaign in 2024, unity and cohesion behind President Akufo-Addo become of paramount importance. The party aims to avoid public discord or disagreements over the President’s economic management that have recently surfaced.

This show of support, however, may not guarantee votes for the establishment candidate, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, as the NPP’s presidential race remains an open field. The Vice President holds a lead with 43.5% among delegates, but the emergence of MP Kennedy Agyapong, with 23.5% support, promises a competitive race ahead.

Whoever secures the NPP nomination will likely rely on the President’s full support to revitalize the party’s prospects and guide Ghana toward economic recovery.

The insights from the delegates’ poll suggest that Nana Akufo-Addo may play a pivotal role in determining the NPP’s future success, a factor that could be crucial as the nation approaches the 2024 elections.

I chose Bawumia as my running mate due to his honesty – Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has provided insight into his rationale for selecting Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate.

Akufo-Addo explained that he chose Dr Bawumia for his exceptional qualities of truthfulness, goal-driven approach, and unwavering dedication to achieving common objectives.

The President also emphasized the importance of regional balance and national unity in Ghana’s leadership, highlighting,“In terms of the balance, people from the south, people from the north…I think that for the unity of the country, it is good that we have a leadership where Northerners and Southerners are together so that the country can remain united.”

These remarks were made during a recent visit to the Jubilee House, Ghana’s presidential residence, by students and educators from the Association International School on October 26.

Furthermore, President Akufo-Addo commended Dr. Bawumia for his honesty and direct communication style, expressing a preference for individuals who speak candidly.

He stated, “He [Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia] is an honest person. He speaks honestly to you. He is not one of those people who you have to guess what they are trying to say; he says what he has to say directly.”

President Akufo-Addo’s decision to select Dr. Bawumia as his running mate initially raised questions and concerns within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and among political observers, as Dr. Bawumia was not a well-known figure in Ghanaian politics at the time.

Nonetheless, Akufo-Addo stood by his choice, and they ran together in the 2008 and 2012 elections, narrowly missing victory on both occasions to the NDC led by John Evans Atta Mills and John Mahama, respectively.

In 2016 and 2020, the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia ticket secured victory, and they have since served as President and Vice President, respectively, for a combined period of six years and ten months.

I needed Bawumia’s brains to help me govern Ghana – Akufo-Addo

In a recent public revelation, President Akufo-Addo provided insight into his decision to choose Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate, a decision that had raised questions given the numerous well-qualified members within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

President Akufo-Addo explained that his selection of Dr. Bawumia was influenced by the latter’s integrity, goal-driven approach, and unwavering dedication to achieving team objectives.

Furthermore, he underscored the significance of having a representative from the Northern region to contribute to the governance of the nation and promote unity across the entire country.

This revelation came during a Q&A session with students and teachers from the Association International School, who visited the Jubilee House on Thursday, October 26.

“Of all the people, why did I choose Bawumia as the Vice President, my goodness, that is a lot of questions. But em…. I think you are aware [that] in terms of the balance, people from the south, people from the north… I think that for the unity of the country, it is good that we have a leadership where Northerners and Southerners are together so that the country can remain united.”

“He [Dr Mahamudu Bawumia] is from the North and I wanted somebody from the North to partner me for the election and then for the governance. He [Dr Mahamudu Bawumia] is also a clever man and I needed his brains to help me govern the country effectively,” President Akufo-Addo.

He further disclosed his admiration for individuals who embody honesty and emphasized that Dr. Bawumia is one of the few honest people he has encountered throughout his political journey.

“He [Dr Mahamudu Bawumia] is an honest person. He speaks honestly to you. He is not one of those people who you have to guess what they are trying to say, he says what he has to say directly and I like that. I prefer to deal with people who are very direct in what they say. These are some of the reasons why I chose Dr Bawumia to be my vice president” Akufo-Addo added.

President Akufo-Addo initially chose Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the December 2008 presidential elections. This decision sparked numerous questions and concerns within his party and among political observers. Many pointed out that Dr. Bawumia was not a known member of the party and had minimal recognition in Ghana’s political landscape.

Despite the skepticism, candidate Akufo-Addo remained steadfast in his choice and retained Dr. Bawumia as his running mate for the December 2012 elections. In both elections, they narrowly lost to John Evans Atta Mills (2008) and John Dramani Mahama (2012).

However, in 2016 and again in 2020, President Akufo-Addo and his running mate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emerged victorious in both elections. They have since worked together as President and Vice President for the past six years and 10 months.

Presently, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is competing against three other aspirants in the upcoming NPP internal presidential primaries scheduled for Saturday, November 4, 2023, to secure the NPP’s flagbearer position for the December 2024 general elections.

Several independent polls have projected Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia to win the NPP’s flagbearership race with an estimated 78% of the valid votes, which will be cast by over 200,000 participating delegates in the constituency-based polls.

President Akufo-Addo has publicly disclosed, for the first time, the reasons behind his choice of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate, despite numerous well-qualified members within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

President Akufo-Addo stated that he selected Dr. Bawumia because of his integrity, goal-oriented mindset, and his unwavering commitment to achieving team objectives.

Additionally, he emphasized the importance of having a representative from the Northern region to assist in governing the nation and fostering unity across the country as a whole.

The President shared this insight while responding to a question posed by Adwoa Boadiwaa, a student from the Association International School, during their visit to the Jubilee House on Thursday, October 26, along with other students and teachers.

Akufo-Addo was just joking at Mepe – Yiadom Boakye

One Boakye Yiadom has defended President Akufo-Addo over his comment at Mepe during his visit to Akosombo Dam spillage victims, which has generated controversy.

During his visit, President Akufo-Addo asserted that he had visited to sympathize with the residents, regardless of whether they voted for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) or not.

“I need everybody here (to understand) and I hope you take the message all across… that when these things happen and the government acts, politics does not come into the matter at all.

“When I took the oath of office as president, I took the oath of office as president for every single individual in Ghana, of all the people in Ghana, all districts.

And whether they voted for me or not, once I have taken the oath of office, I am the president of all the people. So Togbe, I want the people here, beginning with you and the elders to understand that when something like this happens and the government acts, the government is acting for Ghanaians, all Ghanaians,” the president said.

But his comments did not sit well with many, including the Minority in Parliament who stated that the president’s comments show his resentment for the people of the Volta Region.

However, Mr Yiadom believes otherwise. According to him, the vote-comment made by the President was in jest.

“I do believe that he was cracking a joke, that you don’t even vote for me but because I’m the father for all, I will be available whenever there is trouble. The comment was a jest as he made his submission. If he hadn’t said it, it wouldn’t make any difference. The President spoke very lengthy and then you quote just a few portions,” he said while speaking on Hello FM.

On the matter, Mamaga Adzo Srako IV, the Queen Mother of Mepe, criticised the media for taking President Akufo-Addo’s recent remarks, made during his visit to console flood victims, out of context.

She expressed in an interview that the president’s statement, in which he humorously mentioned not receiving many votes from the region, was merely a light-hearted comment that the media sensationalised unnecessarily.

“The president made promises that immediately he’ll see to us, and in the long term he’ll see to us. However, the little joke the president told, that if it were because of votes, he would not have come here, has rather become the news,” she lamented.

“That’s what you [the media] are circulating instead of talking about the disaster that has befallen us. You chose to rather make a big deal out of the harmless joke by the president. We were not pleased with you journalists,” she declared.

Reacting to the Queen Mother’s response, Mr Yiadom said” the woman did extremely well. Very intelligent.”

Abronye DC announces 36-day thanksgiving march for Akufo-Addo, NPP government

Kwame Baffoe, commonly referred to as Abronye DC and serving as the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is gearing up to lead a 36-day march aimed at conveying appreciation to the president and his administration.

This procession, organized under the banner of the Patriotic Forum for Accountable Governance (PaFFAG), is scheduled to take place in Accra, commencing on December 1, 2023, and concluding on January 5, 2024.

In a letter dated October 23, 2023, and addressed to the Ghana Police Service, as reported by GhanaWeb, Abronye clarified that the primary objective of this march is to express gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government.

The group underscored that the government merits recognition for its management of the COVID-19 pandemic and its efforts in steering the nation’s economic recovery following the pandemic’s impact.

“We are writing to request permission to hold a peaceful procession in Accra from 1st December 2023 to 5th January, 2024, the purpose of this procession or assembly is to express our heartfelt appreciation to His Excellency President Akufo Addo for sustaining the nation through Covid-19 pandemic and setting the nation on a path of economic recovery,” parts of the letter read.

“We have carefully selected 37 bus stop to Jubilee House as the route for this demonstration due to its visibility and accessibility. We assure you that we will take all necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of all participants and the general public,” it said of the chosen route.

“We would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with a representative from the police department to discuss our plans in more detail and address any concerns or questions you may have,” it concluded.

‘There is nothing we can do about it’ – NPP MP admits helplessness over Ofori-Atta’s fate

Despite fervent appeals from several NPP Members of Parliament for the dismissal of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, their efforts seem to have hit a wall.

Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, the MP for Asante Akim North, disclosed the party’s seemingly unsuccessful attempts to influence President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s decision concerning Ofori-Atta’s position.

In an exclusive interview on Neat FM, dated October 23, 2023, Appiah-Kubi revealed the collective desire among NPP MPs for Ofori-Atta’s removal from office.

However, he acknowledged the limitations imposed by the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which empowers only the president to dismiss a minister.

“… there is no provision to compel him (the president) to do what we proposed. Those of us who wanted Ofori-Atta removed did all we could within the remit of the law but the constitution gives the president the ultimate power,” explained Appiah-Kubi, expressing a sense of resignation over the issue.

“The constituency even states that the president may remove any of his appointees even if a vote of censure is passed against them… So, it is not binding on the president to remove him, if he wants, he would remove him; if he doesn’t, he won’t,” he said in Twi.

The MP further emphasised their powerlessness in altering the President’s stance: ““So, that is it. There is nothing we can do about it (Ofori-Atta’s removal)

Appiah-Kubi, a lawyer, also disclosed how he, along with other NPP MPs advocating for the Finance Minister’s dismissal, stepped back from obstructing governmental proceedings in Parliament, considering the broader national interest.

This stance comes in the wake of an agreement within the NPP circles, compelling MPs to attend the 2023 budget reading by Ken Ofori-Atta. This agreement was part of the resolutions from a crucial meeting on November 23, 2022, which underscored support for Ofori-Atta in presenting the budget and ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

These developments followed intense speculation about a possible boycott of the budget presentation by about 98 NPP MPs if Ofori-Atta were to present it.

Despite the internal opposition, it appears that the Finance Minister, for now, stands firm in his role, highlighting the intricate balance of power and decision-making within the political corridors of Ghana.

Akufo-Addo governance: God forbid! ‘That we allow you tell us who should be our next president’ – Prof Adei

Former Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, Prof. Stephen Adei, has strongly criticised President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the current state of affairs in Ghana.

In a TV3 interview shared on X on October 20, 2023, Prof. Adei expressed his disappointment, noting that President Akufo-Addo has let down the hopes of Ghanaians who had anticipated a genuine transformation of the country during his tenure.

Furthermore, the aggrieved professor continued that the government and its cohorts seem to influence Ghanaians on who to choose as their next president.

“They think that Ghana is for them and without them, Ghana would not be there. And even some of them think they can tell us who should be our next president. God forbid!” he added.

that unless significant changes occur in the time remaining for Akufo-Addo’s term, he may be remembered as one of the poorest-performing presidents in the nation’s history.

“One of the greatest disappointments of Nana Akufo-Addo’s regime is that, honestly, he raised the hope of Ghanaians.

Ghanaians expected that they had gotten a leader with a vision, with charisma, and with determination, and it seems if he doesn’t redeem himself in the next 14 months, he would go down in history as one of the most disappointing leaders,” he said.

The former chairman of the NDPC indicated that what gets to him the most is “the corruption, the arrogance”.

During his discussion on the matter of corruption in the awarding of government contracts, including road projects, Prof. Adei, a former Director-General and Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration, made these statements.

He conveyed that if the president is cognizant of the questionable dealings transpiring within his administration, he should feel a sense of shame.

“This road contract would be given to you, provided you put one million upfront, not after you have gotten the money. This is what Akufo-Addo must be thinking about and if he knows about it, he must be ashamed.

“That now his people demand from you a certain amount before you would be considered for a job. Why? Because when they get it, whether the government pays you or not, they have gotten their money. It is as if people are in a hurry to loot the country before the end of Akufo-Addo’s term,” he added.

Akufo-Addo a “smart and a good leader? Give me a break, he’s empty – Daniel Ohene Agyekum fumes

Former Ashanti Regional Minister, Daniel Ohene Agyekum, has made a critical assessment of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, characterising him as a politically shrewd figure who, in reality, lacks the substance and the grandiosity attributed to him.

In an interview on Kumasi-based Ultimate FM, which was monitored by MyNewsGh.com, the NDC elder expressed the view that time has proven him and others right, including individuals from both the NPP and the NDC who had previously questioned Akufo-Addo’s suitability as a leader.

Mr. Agyekum contends that the president’s style of governance and his perceived deficiencies in leadership have become evident, thus shedding light on his abilities in the eyes of conscientious Ghanaians who genuinely care about the country.

“Some of us said it and we were told we hated him and were talking too much, but today it is clear for all to see. Tell me what is so special about Akufo-Addo. He only appears as a street-smart guy but I tell you he is empty. In 1992, some of us saw through him and we realised he was not the real deal.

“Some NPP spoke against him becoming the leader of their party, but people said those people were not speaking the truth. Tell me today, will well-meaning Ghanaians say the same today? This man has ruined everything in this country under his tenure as president, and you say he is smart and a good leader; come on, give me a break”, he wondered.

National cathedral saga: This is a dent on your leadership – Alex Segbefia to Akufo-Addo

Director of International Relations for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alex Segbefia, has expressed astonishment regarding the string of controversies surrounding the construction of the National Cathedral project.

His comments come in the wake of the recent resignations of two prominent clergymen, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Rev. Eastwood Anaba, from the Board of Trustees.

Their decision was prompted by their earlier call for an audit of the project.

During an appearance on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, October 21, 2023, Mr. Segbefia characterised the situation as “unbelievable” and implied that it casts an unfavourable light on the leadership style of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.

He commented, “The kind of scandal around the cathedral, an edifice that is supposed to be to the glory of God, is unbelievable.

“And it stands as a blot, a big blot on the leadership style, the leadership of Nana Addo and the NPP government because they all pushed it, and the way and manner in which they went about it was wrong.”

Mr. Segbefia stressed the importance of asking legitimate questions about such projects, especially when government funds have been involved.

He commended the church leaders who distanced themselves from the project.

“I have no problem with the leaders of the churches who have left previously and currently because I think that at any time you must assess where you are with anything.

“And if it comes to the fore that mistakes have been made and the way this is going, and I have to come out of it, then kudos to them for recognising that’s the case,” he noted.

In reaction to the clergymen’s resignations, Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communication for the NPP, conveyed his astonishment, particularly considering the assertion by the secretariat that audit procedures were already in progress for the project.

President Akufo-Addo has called on the Christian Council and the religious community in the country to pray for the nation.

He also asked the Council to pray for the understanding of the people since not everybody elected as a leader is a thief. According to him, this prayer is necessary so that people with that understanding will have some hope in leaders.

The President made the call when the new Chairman of the Christian Council, Right Rev. Dr. Hilliad Della Dogbe, led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on him at the Jubilee House.

He described the perception as unfortunate, stressing that some of them would have been better off in the private sector.

President Akufo-Addo said the people should also have the hope that there are anti-corruption institutions and agencies keeping the government in check.

Right Rev. Dogbe on his part pledged the readiness of the Christian community to pray for God’s guidance and protection of the nation.

Your vote comment shows you don’t care about Voltarians – Minority tells Akufo-Addo

The Minority in Parliament has strongly criticised President Akufo-Addo for his comments during a visit to the Volta Region following the damage caused by the spillage of excess water from the Akosombo dam.

During his visit, President Akufo-Addo asserted that he had visited to sympathize with the residents, regardless of whether they voted for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) or not.

However, his comments have been met with anger and disappointment from the Minority, who have accused him of being insensitive and divisive.

The Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, called on the President to apologize to the victims for his “misguided statement.”

“It shows the government doesn’t really care that much about the people of Volta Region. On behalf of the people of Ghana, the National Democratic Congress Minority in Parliament wants to apologise to the people of the Volta Region for the statement made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“We consider that statement very unfortunate, and this statement should not come from the father of the land in times like this. It surprises us, and we are really disappointed in the statement coming from H.E. the President. We call on him to also apologise to the people of Volta Region, in particular for what he said,” he said.

Furthermore, the General Secretary of the NDC, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, urged the government to provide compensation to the victims of the dam water spillage.

“We came here to give some relief items to you and not leave you in need. We believe all the affected persons will benefit from this. We are of the view that the Volta Region Authority should have given notice to us prior to the spillage.

“In some instances, the VRA should have ensured the spillage was done and did not affect communities and livelihoods. All we want the government to do now is to compensate the affected communities. Livelihoods, farms and houses have been affected and we want the government to see to the compensation of the affected persons,” Fifi Kwetey opined.

NDC apologises to victims of Akosombo Dam spillage for “unfortunate” comments by Akufo-Addo

National Democratic Congress (NDC) have apologised on behalf of President Akufo Addo for the “unfortunate” comments he made during his visit to the victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage.

“Let me also say that on behalf of the people of Ghana and the NDC, the minority in parliament wants to apologise to the people of the Volta region for the statement made by the president of the Republic of Ghana,” he apologised.

This apology follows Akufo-Addo’s statements, which implied that his presence at Mepe, one of the many affected areas in the Volta Region, was a result of the fact that he is president of Ghana, and as is expected of him, he is supposed to come through when his citizens are in distress.

“I came here because Ghanaians are having difficulties and suffering. And it is my responsibility to try and help.

“Because if it is the question of counting who votes for me and who doesn’t vote for me, I shouldn’t be here because you don’t vote for me. But that is not my concern. And in any event, one day you would vote for me and my party,” were the words of the president.

As many, including Members of Parliament (MPs) and others alike, are offering humanitarian aid and support to the victims, the Minority in Parliament on October 20, 2023, has done the same.

Minority leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, during the donation to the victims, expressed his disappointment over the president’s remarks upon his visit while the victims were in “pain”.

“Let me say that we are here as the NDC and on the authority of our leader, the former President John Mahama, to share in your pain and to make some few donations.

“On behalf of the NDC, we say we are truly sorry for what has happened to you. In your language, you’d say “babanami”.

“We consider the statement very unfortunate and this statement should not come from the father of the land. In times like this, it surprises us and we are really disappointed in the statement coming from his excellency, the president,” he fumed.

Akosombo Dam is a hydroelectric power plant that generates electricity from the Volta River. The dam has a reservoir that can store water up to a maximum level of 276 feet.

However, due to heavy rainfall in the upstream areas, the water level in the reservoir has been rising steadily, threatening to overflow the dam.

To prevent this, the Volta River Authority (VRA), which operates the dam, has been spilling excess water from the dam into the downstream areas.

The President’s comments came amidst a tour of communities devastated by the spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams.

In a move that shocked many, he pointed out that if his concern were solely based on electoral support from the affected areas, he wouldn’t have visited to sympathise with the victims.

“I came here because Ghanaians are having difficulties and are suffering, and it is my responsibility to try and help. Because if it is a question of counting who votes for me and who doesn’t vote for me, then I wouldn’t be here because you don’t vote for me,” he said.

This remark, seen by critics as insensitive, especially given the timing, has drawn a significant backlash.

Speaking on TV3 NewDay on Friday, October 20, 2023, Amaliba, also a legal practitioner, expressed profound disappointment in the President’s conduct. He emphasised that the incident revealed more about President Akufo-Addo’s character than his leadership skills.

He criticised the President for using resources funded by the populace for such visits, only to insult the victims of the tragic incident.

“People are distressed. You take the people’s car, because the car that the president drove to that place was bought by the people. You take the people’s money, fuel that car, go to the Volta Region, and insult them in this way. The whole country is up in arms against you; what you could do is to apologise to the people of the Volta Region,” Amaliba detailed, not hiding his disdain.

He further lambasted the President, asserting, “He has failed and I have heard all sorts of complaints about the president. The president’s problem is none of those things people have said about him; the president’s problem is poor upbringing, which will then culminate into all of the things that he is doing. The presidency doesn’t change you – when you become president, that office doesn’t change you; it rather exposes your character.”

The affected areas, including North Tongu, South Tongu, Asuogyaman, Ada East, Keta, and other coastal communities in the Volta Region, have seen considerable havoc due to the dam spillages, with properties destroyed and lives disrupted. Despite the magnitude of the disaster, calls to declare the situation a national emergency have fallen on deaf governmental ears.

Amaliba’s words resonate with a section of the public and political commentators who view the President’s remarks as a misstep, further widening the chasm between the government and the citizens.

Dam spillage, economic crisis: Cabinets commences 3-day retreat

President Akufo-Addo, along with his Cabinet members, is embarking on a three-day retreat to address pressing issues concerning the nation’s economy and the humanitarian crisis afflicting various areas in Lower Volta due to the Akosombo and Kpong Dams spillage.

The retreat coincides with the International Monetary Fund’s recent approval of the next $600 million balance of payment support for Ghana, following the staff agreement reached.

The discussions during the retreat will focus on the severe consequences of the dam spillage, which has displaced thousands in the Volta, Eastern, and parts of the Greater Accra Regions.

The Volta River Authority initiated controlled water spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong Dams on September 15, 2023, due to a consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water levels of the Akosombo reservoir.

Numerous residents in areas like South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, and others have seen their homes submerged as a result of the spillage.

Earlier this week, President Akufo-Addo visited the residents of Mepe and surrounding areas to assess the devastation caused by the spillage. During his visit, he assured the victims that the government would make every effort to provide the necessary assistance.

President Akufo-Addo also mentioned the inter-ministerial committee he established to address flooding-related issues, which will determine the immediate relief measures for the victims and work towards averting future disasters of this magnitude.

“The coordination is about the immediate and the most important thing was to ensure the life of people and that is why 9 centres were established for all the displaced people and all the people in these 9 centres have been provided relief items by NADMO, and it is NADMO’s intention to continue to provide relief items. Apart from what NADMO is doing, we must also think about the future.”
