  • Asamoah Gyan opens up on failed Manchester City move

    Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer Asamoah Gyan has opened up on his failed transfer to Manchester City after playing at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

    Gyan, who was playing for Serie A side Udinese then, had a difficult tournament for the Black Stars on home soil.

    The 34-year-old bagged only goal – a penalty in the opening game against Guinea for the Stars and this led to a lot of criticism from the fans who expected more from the striker.

    Speaking to GTV Sports+, the former Sunderland striker said he regrets representing the senior national team at the tournament because he was injured and that impacted his move to Man City.

    “I regret playing at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations because I was injured but I felt I needed to sacrifice but yet I was criticized [for my performance],” Gyan said.

    “I really regret playing in the tournament because even after that I had to go out for five months.

    “I was supposed to sign for Manchester City but I missed.

    “That has been one of my biggest regrets with the National team.”

    The Ghana international has previously played for Liberty Professionals and finished 3rd on the top- scorers chart before moving abroad in 2003.

  • Gyan reveals how Afcon 2008 cost him Manchester City deal

    Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has disclosed playing at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) cost him a big move to Manchester City.

    Then on the books of Italian side Udinese, the frontman had a challenging tournament for the Black Stars on home soil as he fell out with fans for perceived ‘underwhelming’ performances.

    He netted once at the championship – a penalty in the opening game against Guinea.

    “I regret playing at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations because I was injured but I felt I needed to sacrifice but yet I was criticized [for my performance],” Gyan told GTV Sports+.

    “I really regret playing in the tournament because even after that I had to go out for five months.

    “I was supposed to sign for Manchester City but I missed.

    “That has been one of my biggest regrets with the National team.”

    After the second group game, Gyan threatened to walk out of the Ghana team after it emerged his family was attacked by angry fans following the match.

    Reports said it took a presidential intervention to prevent him from leaving the camp.

    After the tournament where the Black Stars suffered a semi-final elimination, Gyan moved from Udinese to French side Rennes in the summer.

  • Asamoah Gyan sends Castro a deep 38th birthday message

    General Captain of the Black Stars Asamoah Gyan has celebrated his bosom friend Castro as he turns 38 today.

    Castro disappeared at the ADA Estuary on July 6, 2014, when he and his then-girlfriend, Janet Badu joined Asamoah Gyan and other friends for a holiday outing and fun.

    Over the years, there have been Prophets and other clerics who have said that the musician will come back alive but nothing have become of those Prophecies.

    According to law, the two are still alive and will be declared dead in 2021 if they do not return to Ghana before the said date.

    Castro who was 32 years before he disappeared turned 38 today and a sad Asamoah Gyan who lost his close friend some years back in a tweet celebrated him saying “Happy birthday bro. Hmmmmmm. May God be with you wherever you are”.

    Asante Kotoko head coach Maxwell Konadu has weighed in on the potential impact Sulley Muntari and Asamoah Gyan can have on the Ghana Premier League.

    The duo has been linked with a sensational return to the local league in the ongoing transfer window.

    Muntari is rumored to be a subject of interest for Accra Hearts of Oak. The former Inter and AC Milan midfielder is currently unattached after leaving Spanish outfit Albacete in 2019.

  • Black Stars need ‘esprit de corps’ to win AFCON – Asamoah Gyan

    Legendary Ghana forward Asamoah Gyan believes the Black Stars can end the country’s trophy drought by winning the Nations Cup but pleads that politics is removed from the game.

    According to the North East United forward politics has crept its way into football affecting the national team at tournaments.

    The all-time leading scorer also reveals the mentality of the team going into tournaments is divergent, with some players having a positive mindset while others go with a totally negative mindset.

    “We can win if we have the mindset,” he told Tv3’s Juliet Barwuah in an interview when she asked if the country can win the nations cup.

    “Football is a collective job. One person might go in with a positive mindset, and the other with a negative one. This is where the problem is,” he added.

    The 34-year-old continued: “We need the support of Ghanaians but most importantly politics out of the game.

    “For recent years there has been a lot of politics in the game, which is not good. We have to do away with that if not it’s going to be the same. That’s my honest truth.”

    Ghana have been very close yet unsuccessful in recent years, reaching the finals twice in the last decade.

  • I fainted during the celebration when Asamoah Gyan missed the 120th minute penalty – Juan Castillo

    Retired Uruguayan goalkeeper Juan Castillo has narrowed down his joyful moment on the Africa soil during the 2010 World Cup against Ghana in the quarter-final clash in South Africa.

    The former Liverpool De Montevideo keeper actually fainted during the celebration when Asamoah Gyan missed the deadlock last-minute penalty against the La – Celeste lads and went ahead to ask for the jersey of goalkeeper Richard Kingston after the match.

    Despite not making appearances for Uruguay in the 2010 World Cup, his team finished fourth in the tournament.

    Castillo’s first appearance for Uruguay was in a friendly match against South Africa, in a game that finished goalless draw and was also named the second choice goalkeeper of the Uruguay National Team in 2010 World Cup, being Fernando Muslera the titular goalkeeper.

    The 42 year old who enjoyed most of his career in the South American continent playing for over thirteen clubs showed his large jersey collection, which included what goalkeeper Kingston wore for Ghana in the 2010 World Cup quarterfinals match.

  • Asamoah Gyan flaunts his fleets of cars in his mighty mansion (Video)

    Gyan has released a powerful video on his Twitter handle to motivate the youth to appreciate what they have.

    In the video sighted by YEN.com.gh, the former goal poacher decided to put his expensive properties on display.

    The video, which was shot from his mansion which he reportedly bought for $3 million in 2015 showed his fleet of cars.

    Some of his fleet of cars namely Mercedes Benz which has a bed and other home stuff is sold in the region of $600,000, Rolls Royce Panthom, another Mercedes Benz which is the smaller version of the Luxury, Hammer, Porsche, Escalade, Range Rover, Charger (Sports Car) and several other vehicles.

    Gyan became the highest-paid player on the African continent when he joined Shanghai SIPG in 2017.

    The one-time Black Stars skipper despite being an extravagant person due to his riches has been involved in many charity works in the community to give back to society.

    He built a multi-purposed astroturf to his alma mater Accra Academy, he also built boreholes to a college in the Volta Region to solve perennial water shortage in the area, etc.

    Meanwhile, Gyan has expressed his readiness to play for the Black Starsagain when he is called by coach CK Akonnor.

    The former Sunderland goal poacher has not played for the national team since featuring at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

    Former Ghana skipper Asamoah Gyan has spoken highly of the exceptional qualities of his former Black Stars teammates Sulley Muntari.

    Gyan described the former Inter Milan and AC Milan midfield enforcer, saying he does his talking on the field of play, meaning he is very effective as a player than what he does outside the field of play.

    “Sulley was also a great player, he was a positive player. A player with vision, he was he knew how to create chances and assist. He provided most of the assist for my goals. He is somebody who does is talking on the field. He is not somebody who is open to the press, but he always does his thing on the field. He had a great left foot, amazing shot. He is a motivator. He is somebody who tries to do his things indoors.

    Meanwhile, Asamoah Gyan named Michael Essien as the greatest player that he has ever played with at both club and country

    “The best player I have ever played with is Michael Essien,” Asamoah Gyan told Pulse Ghana in an exclusive interview.

    He added that Sulley Muntari and Laryea Kingston are the two other greats aside Michael Essien that he has ever featured with them in the same team

    “Aside Essien the two other great players that I have played with are Laryea Kingston and Sulley Muntari,” he added.

    “I always knew 98% that I would score when I played around Laryea Kingston and Sulley Muntari, because they would always put the ball before you to score”.

    The 34-year-old played for many clubs outside the shores of Ghana such as Udinese, Rennes, Sunderland, Al Ain, Shanghai SIPG, Al Ahly, etc.

    Gyan now plies his trade with NorthEast United in the Indian topflight league.

  • Ill play for Black Stars if recalled Asamoah Gyan

    Former captain of the Black Stars Asamoah Gyan says he will readily honour an invitation to the national team if handed a call-up.

    Gyan, 34, said he is still available for selection, adding that he has not retired from the national team.

    The 34-year-old has played for the Black Stars for almost two decades, having made his international debut in 2003.

    He was however stripped of the captaincy by former Coach, Kwesi Appiah who opted for Dede Ayew as his captain.

    Gyan was made the General Captain of the Senior National team.

  • CK Akonnor, Asamoah Gyan in attendance as Kotoko beat Bechem United

    Black Stars coach Charles Akonnor and former captain Asamoah Gyan attended the Ghana Premier League match between Asante Kotoko and Bechem at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday.

    Akonnor returned to the country last week after days of monitoring Ghanaian players based in Europe.

    The 45-year-old had been touring Europe to check up and interact with some Black Stars players and scout some Ghanaian talents abroad.

    The Black Stars will take on Sudan in back-to-back Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month and will need to infuse the team with some local talent hence the decision to throng the Accra Sports Stadium.

    He is expected to watch a few more Ghana League matches before announcing his final squad for the Sudan games.

    The former Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko gaffer was joined at the VIP section by Asamoah Gyan and his manager Samuel Anim Addo, who is also a member of the Ghana FA Executive Committee.

    Gyan has been in the country since November last year after suffering an injury while playing for club side NorthEast United in the Indian Super League.

    The Black Stars all-time leading scorer is a staunch Asante Kotoko fan, and has a player in the Porcupine Warriors set-up called Matthew Anim Cudjoe.

    Asante Kotoko meanwhile triumphed on the night with a 3-1 score line.

    Hafiz Konkoni put Bechem United ahead with a thumping header in the 20th minute before goals from Martin Antwi and Augustine Okrah handed the hosts a 2-1 lead in the first half.

    The Reds sealed the win in the 58th minute through defended Ibrahim Moro.

    The result propelled Kotoko to 2nd on the table with 21 points from 12 games

    Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan suffered an injury during NorthEast United 1-0 win at Hyderabad FC in the India Super League on Wednesday.

    Gyan was replaced in the 51st minute after he picked up a groin injury.

    Last Friday, he scored a stunning effort as his side NorthEast United battled to a draw at home against Goa.

    Gyan’s goals have propelled NorthEast United to a great start as they sit fourth on the standings.

    Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan is among four players nominated for Northeast United Max Performer Award.

    Gyan hit an 85th minute winner on Saturday as his side defeated Odisha FC at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium.

    The Black Stars general captain was in stupendous form and has been chosen alongside Redeem Tilang, Kai Heerings and Rakesh Pradan for the award which is specially voted by the fans.

    Gyan had earlier on been named as the official “hero” of the match after having hundred percent shot accuracy, creating two chances of which he scored one and having 53 touches in the game.

  • Gyan dreams of taking the 2010 World Cup penalty against Uruguay again

    Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan has revealed he is still haunted by his famous penalty miss against Uruguay during the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa.

    In what was the last kick of the game, the frontman, who currently plays club football for Indian fold NorthEast United, struck his injury-time kick against the crossbar, breaking the hearts of millions of Ghanaians and Africans.

    Had he converted, he would have sent the Black Stars into the semi-final of the World Cup – the first by any African nation.

    “In the 2010 World Cup, we were knocked out in the quarter-final in controversial circumstances,” Gyan told Outlookindia.

    “It was against Uruguay, and I missed a crucial match-winning penalty towards the end of extra-time, after a Luis Suarez handball.

    “The penalty miss is something that I will never forget. It’s part of my life now. I am not the only player, who missed a crucial penalty.

    “We could have become the first African team to reach the World Cup semi-final. Sometimes when I am alone, I think about it and it still hurts.

    “I feel, ‘Oh! Maybe we can play the penalty again so that I can redeem myself.’ Life goes on, I need to forget about it and live my life.”

    Ghana have since 2010 not gone close to the quarter-final of the World Cup.

    In 2014, the Black Stars suffered a group stage exit while in 2018, they failed to qualify for the tournament altogether.

    Gyan, though, has gone on to become Ghana’s most-capped and all-time top scorer.

  • Asamoah Gyan lands in India to start career with NorthEast United FC

    Asamoah Gyan has arrived in India to begin his spell with Indian Super League side NorthEast United FC, GHANASoccernet.com can confirm.

    Gyan was spotted at the airport with Ghana’s High Commissioner to India Mike Ocquaye Jnr.

    The 33-year-old will be playing for his 11th club in his professional career.

  • Gyan wishes retired ex-teammate well

    General skipper of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, has wished his former Sunderland teammate, David Meyler well as he called time off his career.
    The 30-year-old Irish midfielder announced his retirement from the game citing recurrent knee injuries as the reason for ending his career.

    Gyan who played for the English Premier League side between 2010 and 2012 alongside the Republic of Ireland midfielder, thanked him for his contribution to the game and wished him well.

    “Thank you for what you have done in the sport. It was nice playing with you mate. Happy retirement and good luck in everything”, the 33-year-old ex-Black Stars skipper twitted.

    Other players such as Ryan Mason said in a tweet “Congratulations on your career @DavidMeyler ! Had the pleasure of playing against & with you! Good luck in retirement!”
