  • Watch fans boogie to Castro, Asamoah Gyan’s song in Qatar despite defeat to Uruguay

Ghanaian fans were captured celebrating in Qatar despite the Black Stars’ loss to Uruguay in the final Group H fixture at the Al Janoub Stadium in Doha on December 2, 2022.

Ghana lost but opponents Uruguay, led by Luis Suarez, also crashed out on goals scored after finishing with four points apiece with South Korea.

In a video shared by Isaac Fanin, a BBC journalist covering the tournament, a pool of Ghanaians are captured dancing to a popular song titled, African Girls, by late musician Castro featuring former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan.

Hundreds of the fans are seen singing along as the song is blasted on loud speakers as they dance ostensibly to celebrate Uruguay’s exit despite having inflicted a similar fate on Ghana.

He captioned the video thus: “This is absolutely top tier pettiness from Ghanaians! A DJ is playing Asamaoh Gyan’s music whilst Ghanaians party at Uruguay’s expense! Baby jet is here. Imagine if Ghana had won.”

Gyan in 2010 missed a crucial penalty after Suarez handled a goal-bound effort. Uruguay went on to win the game on penalties denying Ghana a place in the semi finals.

    Match Report: Uruguay vs. Ghana

The Black Stars of Ghana had one task going into their final Group H fixture at the 2022 World Cup.

Win at all costs, worse case draw against Uruguay and secure passage into the Round-of-16 stage of the competition.

The match was, however, settled with three major incidents in the first half. A penalty miss by Black Stars skipper Andre Dede Ayew, when the score was goalless.

Then Giorgian de Arrascaeta’s two goals for Uruguay which came in quick sucession, consigned the Black Stars to a second World Cup defeat against the South Americans who broke hearts of Africans in 2010.

Their 2 – 0 victory over the Black Stars was, however, not enough to get them through to the next round of the tournament as South Korea beat Portugal 2-1.

With Uruguay in dire need of a third goal to progress to the next round of the World Cup, Suarez was reduced to tears as efforts to score another goal proved futile.

Portugal and South Korea advanced from Group H as Uruguay and Ghana exited the tournament after finished 3rd and 4th respectively.

  • ‘Africa is happy’ – Fans across the world celebrate Suarez’s grief after World Cup exit

The sorrow that Uruguayan captain Luis Suarez felt when his team defeated the Ghana Black Stars at the World Cup but did not advance from their group was shared by football fans from all over the continent and the globe.

The Al Janoub Stadium in Doha was filled with images of the former Liverpool player sobbing as he contemplated leaving the competition. These images also trended on social media, particularly

From Nigerian journalists to Somali activists, a Kenyan lawyer and others across the continent and the world, it was justice done Ghana and the Black Stars for Suarez, the villain of 2010, to be weeping because of a lack of qualification.

Roll back to 2010, Luis Suarez cleared a goal-bound effort with his hands when the two sides met in a quarter-final game in South Africa. Unfortunately, the resulting penalty was missed by Asamoah Gyan with Uruguay going on to win on penalties.

It appears that most Africans were waiting for the Black Stars to beat Suarez and the Uruguayans but in the absence of that, the fact that Uruguay crashed out and that Suarez was captured sobbing seems to have placated most fans.

See some of the reactions below:

If Ghana need any consolation,it’s seeing Uruguayans heartbroken and Suarez in tears.

On TV, Asamoah Gyan has called it karma, in reference to 2010, he convenientlly takes himself out of the picture. #FIFAWorldCup

This twelve year #Suarez/#Ghana karma is actually one of the great #WorldCup stories.
It’s Shakespeare updated – tragedy, triumph, pain, revenge, irony, even comedy.
With one of the great little villains getting his comeuppance. Lovely stuff.

  • Ghana, Uruguay meet again at World Cup after 2010 drama

In a rematch of one of the most contentious games of the World Cup, Ghana and Uruguay face off on Friday, and Luis Suarez has yet to apologize for his pivotal role in the controversy from 12 years ago.

Uruguay striker Suarez’s deliberate handball on the goal line at the end of extra time in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa denied Ghana a certain goal and a place in history as the first African team to reach the semis.

Suarez was sent off for the handball but celebrated wildly on the sidelines when Asamoah Gyan hit the penalty off the crossbar. Uruguay won the ensuing penalty shootout.

To make it worse, Suarez boasted after the 2010 game: “Truth is, it was worth it.”

    On Thursday, he remained unrepentant.

“I don’t apologize because I take the handball and the red card but the Ghana player missed the penalty. It’s not my fault because I didn’t miss the penalty,” Suarez said.

Ghana can now go some way toward settling the score. By beating Uruguay in their final Group H match, Ghana would advance to the round of 16, while knocking Uruguay out of the tournament.

Though the match in Al Wakrah has been circled as one to watch ever since the World Cup draw was made, Ghana coach Otto Addo tried his best to cast it as a “normal game” despite 2010 remaining a raw and painful memory for many Ghanaians, who are demanding revenge for the handball.

“For me, it’s not a big topic,” Addo said, adding he wouldn’t criticize one of his own players if they did the same as Suarez. “I would expect every player to do all he can to make sure his team goes through. Even sacrificing himself with a red card.”

“What happened in 2010 is very sad but we can’t change it. We want to look forward and we want to win this game,” he said. “No matter how.”

Ghana, which squeezed out a thrilling 3-2 win over South Korea in its last game, must win again in Al Wakrah to be certain of going past the group stage for the first time since 2010. A draw could also be enough depending on the result of South Korea vs. Portugal.

Captain Andre Ayew is the only Black Stars player in Qatar who was on the 2010 squad.

Uruguay has a handful, including the 35-year-old Suarez, who is playing what’s likely his farewell World Cup before winding down a career that saw him celebrated as one of the best forwards in the world at one point.

He won the Copa America with Uruguay and Spanish league titles and a Champions League trophy with Barcelona.

Suarez also carved out a reputation as one of the game’s most controversial characters and has been punished three times for biting opponents, including a four-month ban for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Suarez started Uruguay’s 0-0 draw with South Korea in Qatar but was on the bench for the 2-0 loss to Portugal, which left Uruguay bottom of the group.

Uruguay must now beat Ghana and hope South Korea doesn’t beat Portugal to extend its stay at the World Cup and Suarez’s international career for at least one more game. The goal difference will decide if Uruguay and South Korea both win.

Stoking it just a little bit more, Suarez said the 2010 game against Ghana does still mean anything to Uruguay.

“We are going to put our lives and soul into this match,” Suarez said. “Ghana is a good team but we know them, we have beaten them before and we know how to beat them again.”

  • I celebrated Asamoah Gyan’s penalty miss, says unremorseful Luis Suarez

Uruguay striker, Luis Suarez has revealed that he celebrated after Asamoah Gyan missed his crucial penalty during the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Black Stars, who made their second appearance at the Mundial were on the verge of becoming the first African team to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup before losing on penalties to Uruguay in 2010.

Ghana were awarded a penalty in the final seconds of extra time after Suarez used his hand to keep out Dominic Adiyiah’s goal-bound header but Asamoah Gyan missed from the spot.

Uruguay eventually won the game 4-2 on penalties to progress to the semi-final of the World Cup at the expense of Ghana.

It’s been 12 years since that game in South Africa, but Suarez continues to be vilified by Ghanaians and Africans for his actions.

The Uruguay striker, however, insists his red card was worth it, explaining in his autobiography ‘Crossing the Line’ that Gyan’s miss felt like a goal.

According to the veteran striker, he was devastated after being sent off but his reaction quickly transformed into ecstasy when Gyan missed, insisting it felt like Uruguay had scored.

“I walked off the pitch devastated. I was crying and the only thing going through my head at that point was, ‘We’re going out of the World Cup, we’re going out of the World Cup …’ I had been sent off and we were going home,” Suarez said in his autobiography.

Gyan was going to take the penalty and (…) I was convinced he wasn’t going to miss. We had no chance. And then I saw the ball go over the bar. He had missed. And one word came out of my mouth: ‘Gol!’ The feeling, the sense of release, was the same as if we had scored.

“Unbelievable. I’ll never forget it. That was when I realized what I’d done. That was when I realized the sending-off had been worth it. I had stopped a goal, they had missed the penalty and we were still alive.”

Ghana will be seeking revenge when they face Suarez and Uruguay again in their last group game of the Qatar 2022 World Cup on Friday at the Al Janoub Stadium with kick-off scheduled at 15;00GMT.

  • World Cup 2022: Ex-Uruguay defender Hugo De León charges players to fight until the end against Ghana

Former Uruguay defender Hugo De León has urged  players to  put in all effort to defeat Ghana in the final group game in the World Cup.

Uruguay have managed just a point after suffering defeat against Portugal on Monday afternoon after two games in Group H

Meanwhile, Ghana earned an important win to boost their chances of progressing to the round of 16.

The Black Stars inflicted a 3-2 win over the Asian giants to boost their chances of qualifying to the knockout phase.

The four-time African champions must avoid defeat against Uruguay to book a spot in the Round of 16.

Ahead of their clash with Ghana, the former Uruguay international has charged the players to play until the end of the game.

With six points, the 2016 European Champions are now leading Group H ahead of Ghana, who has three.

Prior to Friday’s final group games, Uruguay and South Korea both have one point each.

In the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, a Luis Suarez handball incident prevented Ghana from advancing to the semifinals.

Dominic Adiyiah of Ghana’s blocked the former Liverpool and Barcelona forward’s goal-bound header in the final second of extra time at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

Suarez effectively made a goalkeeper-caliber stop on the line, and as a result, he received a straight red card.

A penalty kick was given to Ghana as well, but Asamoah Gyan‘s shot from 12 yards hit the crossbar, causing Suarez to lose his mind on the sidelines and forcing a shootout.

Luis Suarez was applauded for his diabolical act as Uruguay advanced to the semifinals following the penalty shootout victory.

  • Check out Asamoah Gyan’s ‘hilarious’ reaction to Ghana vs South Korea game

Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, is among the many Ghanaians who had a nerve-racking experience while watching Ghana play against South Korea today.

The Black Stars were in a comfortable lead in the first half of the game after they scored two goals. However, the smiles changed to worry as South Korea equalised within 10 minutes.

With team work, Ghana scored a third, but their victory was hanging by a thread as South Korea mounted more pressure as the end of the game drew near.

South Korea for 10 minutes, pounced on the defence of Ghana and this left Asamoah Gyan in discomfort. He paced around, hoping to hear the final whistle to signal Ghana’s victory.

Just as for many Ghanaians, this was one of the longest 10 minutes in Asamoah Gyan’s life.

He was impatient and continued shouting “Referee, it is time. This referee.”

Relief came to “Baby Jet” only after the whistle was blown. He could not hide his joy as he screamed and run around in a studio.

  • World Cup 2022: Mohammed Kudus is a genius – Legendary Asamoah Gyan

Ghana legend, Asamoah Gyan has described Mohammed Kudus as a genius following his scintillating performance against South Korea.

The Black Stars recorded their first win of the 2022 World Cup after losing to Portugal against South Korea at the Education City Stadium on Monday.

Kudus, 22, grabbed a brace in the 34th and 69th minute after Mohammed Salisu had broken the deadlock in the 24th minute.

Speaking after the game, Gyan, who played in 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups in Germany, South Africa, and Brazil lauded the Ajax forward.

According to him, the former FC Nordsjaelland forward is a genius player.

“Ghana started the game well and it looked like they get into the box and that goal from Kudus is simply amazing,” he said on SuperSport..

Ghana now has three points following the win. The Black Stars will take on Uruguay in their final group game on Friday at the Al Janoub Stadium with kick-off scheduled at 15:00GMT.

  • World Cup 2022: Asamoah Gyan charges Black Stars to maintain impressive performance after win over South Korea

Former Ghana captain, Asamoah Gyan says the performance of the team is not a fluke adding that they must maintain their performance.

His comments come after Ghana’s win over South Korea in their second Group H game on Monday at the Education City Stadium.

After suffering a defeat against Portugal on Thursday, the Black Stars had to beat the Asian side to maintain their hope alive.

However, a brace from Mohammed Kudus and Mohammed Salisu saw Ghana pick their first win of the tournament despite two quick goals from Cho Gue-sung.

Reacting to the win, the 37-year-old said the performance of the team against Portugal and South Korea is a fluke but cautioned the team to be consistent to prove that they are in to compete.

“Great performance from the Black Stars and this performance is not a fluke,” he said on SuperSport.

“If they can maintain this performance, it will prove that they are in to compete,” Gyan, who is the country’s all-time leading goalscorer with 51 goals added.

Ghana will take on Uruguay in their final group game on Friday at the Al Janoub Stadium with kick-off scheduled at 15:00GMT.

Ghana forward, Mohammed Kudus says the Black Stars will aim for revenge against Uruguay.

The West African side will take on the two-time world champions in their final Group H game on Friday.

Ghana were on the verge of playing in the semifinal of the 2010 Mundial in South Africa but Luis Suarez prevented Dominic Adiyah’s goal-bound header.

Asamoah Gyan failed to convert a spot kick awarded before the South American side kicked Ghana out, winning 4-2 on spot kicks after 120 minutes of action.

And Kudus, speaking in an interview said Gyan is not part of the team but they will fight to seek revenge on Friday.

“Even though he is no longer part of the team, we will also play for him against Uruguay,” Kudus told Algemeen Dagblad.

The game will kick off at 15:00GMT at the Al Januob Stadium.

  • 2022 World Cup: Andre Ayew is the third Ghanaian to score in multiple World Cups

After Asamoah Gyan and Sulley Muntari, Black Stars captain André Ayew became the third Ghanaian to score in multiple World Cups.

On Thursday night against Portugal, Andre Ayew scored Ghana’s first goal at the 2022 World Cup.

Following his goal, he was replaced by his brother Jordan Ayew.

Before Andre Ayew’s equaliser in the 73rd minute, Ronaldo’s penalty kick made the difference in the 65th minute following an easy penalty awarded by the American referee of Moroccan descent.

Later goals from Rafael Leao and Joao Felix gave Portugal a 3-1 advantage over Ghana.

Osman Bukari scored Ghana’s second goal to make it 3-2.

Since joining Ghana’s senior team in 2008, Ayew has amassed more than 100 caps. He played a key role for and served as captain of the under-20 squad that won the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2009 African Youth Championship.

He has participated in two FIFA World Cups (2010 and 2014), seven Africa Cup of Nations (2008, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2021), and two Olympics. He helped Ghana finish second in 2010 and 2015 and was the tournament’s leading scorer in 2017.

In 2011 Ayew was named the BBC African Footballer of the Year and Ghana Footballer of the Year.

Andre Ayew previous played for FC Lorient, West Ham, Swansea City, Fenerbahce and AC Arles-Avignon. He currently plays for Qatar Stars League club Al Sadd SC.

  • World Cup 2022: Asamoah Gyan believes Ronaldo benefitted from soft penalty against Ghana

Former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan says Cristiano Ronaldo befitted from a soft penalty against Ghana after becoming the first man to score at five World Cups.

After the goalless first half, Ronaldo opened the scoring for Portugal via the penalty spot but Ghana improved after the goal and scored the equalised through skipper Andre Ayew from close range.

Portugal responded with two goals in two minutes to seal the points – Joao Felix converting a delightfully clipped finish and substitute Rafael Leao coolly stroking in just seconds after coming on.

Osman Bukari headed in a late consolation for Ghana and there could have been real drama in the ninth minute of stoppage time.

“The penalty for me… I don’t agree, in my opinion because it was just a soft touch,” Gyan told SuperSport TV after the game.

“Although Ronaldo was a bit earlier, it wasn’t a touch that could be a penalty. The referee should have at least checked the video assistant referee and made his decision. For me, I think it was too soft.”

He added, “The change came in too early. Although Dede Ayew got the goal, he was visibly exhausted before then, but after scoring, he and the man of the moment, Kudu were taken off which I disagree with a bit.”

“But at the end of the day, the players stepped up to the plate. I think the second half is the best we have seen in this competition so far.”

The defeat means Black Stars are bottom of Group H after Uruguay and South Korea played out a goalless draw earlier on Thursday.

The Black Stars will now switch their attention to their attention to the match against South Korea on Monday before taking on Uruguay on December 2 at the Education City stadium.

  • World Cup 2022: It was poor penalty decision – Asamoah Gyan criticizes referee after Ghana’s defeat to Portugal

Ghana legend, Asamoah Gyan has slammed Referee Ismael Elfath for his decision to award a penalty to Portugal.

After an impressive performance from Black Stars in the first half, the American referee awarded a penalty to Portugal after Mohammed Salisu challenged Ronaldo for a 50-50 ball in the 18-yard box of Ghana.

Although replays showed that the Ghanaian got a touch on the ball and despite calls for VAR review, Elfath stood by his decision.

Ronaldo beautifully converted the spot kick to break the deadlock as the Portuguese went ahead to record a 3-2 win over Ghana.

Speaking after the game, Gyan, who has played in three different World Cups criticized the decision of the referee.

“The penalty decision was poor and soft,” Gyan said on SuperSport.

“I am a striker but what we saw was soft and should not be a penalty,” he added.

The win takes Portugal top of the group but the 0-0 draw between South Korea and Uruguay earlier in the day means today’s loss might not prove to be too costly for the Black Stars.

Ghana will hope to secure their first win when they come up against South Korea on Monday at the Education City Stadium with kick-off scheduled at 13:00GMT.

  • World Cup 2022: Past recognized moment at tournament – Luis Suarez handball against Ghana

One of the most memorable moments at the Mundial was the handball against Ghana by Uruguay striker Luis Suarez.

The ball was on its way to an open net. Without a doubt, that was going to be a goal for Ghana. And not just any objective. This one, in the last minute of extra time in their 2010 quarterfinal against Uruguay, would make the Black Stars the first African team to reach a World Cup semifinal, much alone one on South African soil.

Luis Suarez, a forward for Uruguay, had to make a choice as he was on the goal line. His decision will abruptly halt Ghana’s progress. Suarez hit the ball out of the air with his hands knowing full well that he would be sent off.

Suarez calculated in a split second that the only chance his team had of remaining in the game was to avoid giving up the goal at all costs, even if that meant sacrificing himself and forcing Ghana to earn a penalty kick.

From the spot, Asamoah Gyan missed. After winning the subsequent shootout, Uruguay progressed to the semifinals.

The Black Stars of Ghana will clash with Uruguay again at the 2022 World Cup in Group H on 2nd December. The massive encounter will be played at the Al Janoub Stadium.

Ghanaians are seeking revenge against Uruguay at the Mundial in Qatar and have urged the Black Stars to focus on beating the Sky Blues.

  • 2022 World Cup: We feel like it is our opportunity to get a revenge – Gyan on Uruguay tie

Asamoah Gyan says Ghanaians cannot wait for Black Stars‘ third group game against Uruguay at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

According to the 37-year-old, the game feels like a revenge after the two countries were paired in the Group H of the global showpiece.

Black Stars were eliminated by the two-time champions on penalties in South Africa, having seen Asamoah Gyan miss an extra-time spot-kick after Luis Suarez was sent off for handball.

Ghana take on Portugal in their first game in Group H on November 24 before playing South Korea and Uruguay on November 28 and December 2 respectively.

“Everyone in Ghana is waiting for the game against Uruguay because of what happened in 2010. We feel like it is our opportunity to get a revenge,” Gyan told Talksport and online sports radio.

Gyan is the all-time leading goalscorer of Ghana, with 51 goals and is also the top African goalscorer in the history of the World Cup with six goals.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup takes place between November 20 and December 18, 2022.

Only three sides from the continent have ever progressed to the quarter-finals; Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, and Ghana in 2010.

Ghana will be hoping to progress from the group stage at this year’s tournament.

Black Stars exited the group stage at the 2014 edition in Brazil after a slow start to the tournament.

He also made two clearances and one crucial tackle, preventing Xherdan Shaqiri from firing from the edge of the box

The match was Ayew’s 110th appearance for the Black Stars making him the outright most-capped player for the four-time African champions.

He has surpassed the legendary Asamoah Gyan who made 109 appearances for Ghana between 2003 and 2019.

Ayew debuted for Black Stars in 2007, then went on to captain the U20 team to win African Youth Championship and the World Cup in 2009.

  • ‘We’re our own enemies’ – Asamoah Gyan speaks on Black Stars call-up

Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan says Ghanaians are their own enemies ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup tournament in Qatar later this month.

The former Sunderland player has reacted to the recent brouhaha surrounding Black Stars recent call-up for the upcoming FIFA Mundial.

He was the main striker for the Black Stars when they made their first-ever appearance in Germany 2006 and scored the country’s first-ever goal at the tournament.

He was named Ghana’s captain ahead of the 2014 edition when Ghana exited the competition at the group stages and was the only time Ghana failed to qualify from the Group stages.

  • Top 5 African goalscorers at World Cups

There have been some legendary stars from the African continent who have graced the World Cup over the years, and more will get the opportunity to write their names into the history books in Qatar this month.

We look at the top five scorers from Africa at the showpiece finals tournament.

    • 5. PAPA BOUBA DIOP (SENEGAL) – 3 goals

Midfielder Diop rose to global fame when he netted the opening goal of the 2002 World Cup in South Korea/Japan, helping Senegal defeat champions France 1-0.

He netted two more against Uruguay as the west Africans reached the quarterfinals in their debut tournament and Diop finished as their top scorer with three goals.

He sadly passed away in 2020 at the age of 42 after reportedly suffering from motor neuron disease. Senegal president Macky Sall and his 2002 teammates were in attendance at his funeral.

    • 4. SAMUEL ETO’O (CAMEROON) – 3 goals

The current president of the Cameroon Football Federation was once a lethal striker in his day but may be slightly disappointed with his tally at World Cups.

He was selected for four finals tournaments, including as the youngest player in France in 1998 when aged only 17, making eight appearances in all.

His goals came against Saudi Arabia (2002), Denmark, and Netherlands (both 2010), but given he is the record-holder for goals scored in the Africa Cup of Nations finals (18), he may have expected more.

    • 3. AHMED MUSA (NIGERIA) – 4 goals

Musa has only ever scored 16 goals in 107 appearances in a Super Eagles shirt, but four of those have come at the World Cup finals!

He played at the last two tournaments for the Super Eagles but will not be back to add to his tally after they failed to qualify for Qatar.

Musa got a brace against Argentina in a 3-2 loss at the 2014 finals in Brazil, before scoring two more against Iceland in 2018. He has seven appearances in World Cups in all.

    • 2. ROGER MILLA (CAMEROON) – 5 goals

Milla is the oldest-ever scorer at a World Cup after his strike against Russia in 1994 at the age of 42, which was also the last of his five goals.

He had appeared at the 1982 finals and played all three games for the Indomitable Lions without getting on the scoresheet, but it was in 1990 that he shot to fame.

Called out of retirement to play as a 38-year-old, he set the tournament alight with his four goals – two against Romania and another brace versus Colombia as Cameroon reached the quarterfinals.

He was back again in 1994, though this time as a bench player, and still managed to add a fifth goal in the final game for his side.

    • 1. ASAMOAH GYAN (GHANA) – 6 goals

The record-holder is Ghanian forward Asamoah Gyan, who netted six goals and grabbed three assists in 11 appearances over three tournaments bfirst-everetween 2006 and 2014.

He shot to prominence in Germany 16 years ago as he netted against the Czech Republic to help his side to the second round.

But it was really at the 2010 tournament in South Africa where he proved both hero and villain. His three goals against Serbia, Australia, and United States helped Ghana to the quarterfinals, where he missed a penalty against Uruguay that would have secured a first ever semifinal place for an African nation.

He bounced back from that setback though and led the line again for Ghana in 2014, where he netted versus eventual champions Germany and Portugal to take his tally to six.

  • John Paintsil reveals biggest moments as Black Stars player

Former Black Stars defender John Paintsil has disclosed his greatest moments in the national team.

The 41-year-old represented Ghana at two FIFA World Cup tournaments, thus in 2006 and 2010.

He was instrumental for Milovan Rajevac’s side that reached the quarter-finals in South Africa before losing to Uruguay, featuring in all five games.

Despite making history with the Black Stars by reaching the quarter-finals, Paintsil has highlighted victories over Czech Republic in 2006 and the USA in 2010 as hi biggest moments.

“I think my most memorable moments were in the two World Cups. The first one was the 2006 edition where we beat Czech Republic,” he told TV3.

“The second one was when we beat USA in 2010 in South Africa.’

Paintsil added, “It was a late goal that Asamoah Gyan scored for the country, for his teammates and for the world to see. It was the game that helped us reach the quarterfinals against Uruguay.”

“It was a very amazing moment that put us in football history in Africa. Ghana is one of the African countries that has reached the World Cup quarterfinals.”

The right-back featured for Berekum Arsenal, Liberty Professionals, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Santos and Maritzburg United.

He also played for English Premier League sides West Ham United, Fulham and Leicester City.

  • 2014 World Cup: Our agitations has been a blessing for Black Stars – Asamoah Gyan

Former captain of the Black Stars Asamoah Gyan has emphasized that the team benefited from their unrest at the 2014 World Cup.

When the team’s appearance fee was delayed, players threatened to skip practice in order to underperform the team in their final group match against Portugal.

However, the then NDC government airlifted 3 million dollars to the camp of the team ahead of the team but the Black Stars suffered a 2-1 defeat to exit the tournament with just a point after three games.

“What happened in Brazil was unfortunate, but our predecessors paved the way and we did the same for the next generation to be where they are now,” Gyan told GHOne TV.

“A lot of mistakes were made in the past but now they have been rectified.

“Now when we are going into a tournament, these financial issues are sorted out way ahead of time to prevent a repeat of that event in Brazil.

“Hitherto, it was not done that way. We will get to a tournament before we begin negotiations (for our bonuses), which will lead to disruptions and loss of focus. It (the strike) was a blessing in disguise. We did what we had to do for our younger ones to benefit today,” he added.

Ghana failed to qualify for the last edition hosted in Russia in 2018 but has made a return to the global showpiece scheduled to be hosted in Qatar.

  • Asamoah Gyan drops 2022 FIFA World Cup song for Black Stars

The song features Afrobeats singer Kiaani, the original song “Turn Up” was released earlier this year.

This is the second collaboration between Asamoah Gyan and Kiaani, the first song was titled ‘ungrateful’, which made waves in the music industry.

However, Gyan known for his goal scoring prowess also had mild music career and as he collaborated with Castro on the popular “African Girls” song after the 2010 World Cup.

Asamoah Gyan posted on his Twitter page saying “The Anthem for the FIFA World Cup is here let’s go Ghana!”.

  • Asamoah Gyan: I’m going to live with my penalty miss against Uruguay for the rest of my life

Ghana legend, Asamoah Gyan has disclosed that he still gets flashbacks from his penalty miss against Uruguay at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

According to the former Black Stars captain, he is going to live with the infamous penalty miss for the rest of his life.

“I had to cry because I felt like I came from hero to zero. I let the whole continent, my country down. Anytime I’m in a room it just pops up in my mind. I’m going to live it with for the rest of my life,” Asamoah Gyan told FIFA during a sit-down interview.

Opening up on the penalty miss, the former Sunderland FC striker says he applied the wrong technique.

“I was one of the top 3 best players In the world at that time. I was on top of the world, I was confident. A day before the Uruguay game I shot 20 penalties against our goalkeeper at training, I scored all 20. I was going to my left side of the goalkeeper.

“I saw him going to the left. And then I saw him going to my right where I was shooting the bad. He feinted me and then went to where the ball was going. I didn’t know how the ball went up. Technically there was something wrong. I didn’t have the right technique,” Asamoah Gyan explained.

Although Gyan is not actively playing football, he dreams of one last dance with the Ghana national team.

  • Asamoah Gyan shattered Black Stars World Cup dreams in 2010 – Richard Kingston

Former Black Stars goalkeeper, Richard Kingston says Asamoah Gyan shattered the Black Stars World Cup dreams in 2010 after missing a crucial penalty against Uruguay.

Ghana were denied a semifinal berth at the World Cup courtesy of a Luis Suarez handball incident in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward prevent a goal-bound header from Ghana’s Dominic Adiyiah in the final minute of extra time at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

Suarez essentially produced a save on the line worthy of a goalkeeper and he was shown a straight red card as a result.

Ghana were also awarded a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan’s attempt from 12 yards crashed into the crossbar, which resulted in Suarez going mental on the touchline and sent the game to a shootout.

Uruguay won the penalty shoot-out to progress to the semifinals with Luis Suarez celebrated for his demonic act.

However, Kingston, who was part of the squad insists that Gyan shattered their dreams, but was quick to admit that it’s part of the football.

“It was a mixed feeling, our dreams were shattered when Gyan missed from the penalty spot but most importantly we were at the center of history, missing penalty is part of the game,” he told Ignite Media.

Gyan remains the country’s all-time leading goalscorer with 51 goals. The 36-year-old has played in three World Cups in Germany, South Africa, and Brazil in 2006, 2010 and 2014 respectively.

Meanwhile, the Black Stars face Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay in Group H in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

  • Seeking revenge against Uruguay shouldn’t be Ghana’s objective – Agyemang Badu

The current Black Stars team has been cautioned by Black Stars player Emmanuel Agyemang Badu not to seek revenge against South American foe Uruguay at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in QATAR.

Ghana enters the tournament as the 32 nations scheduled to compete in the World Cup in Qatar, Middle East, with the lowest FIFA ranking (61st), having been drawn in Group H with the 2016 European Champions Portugal, Ghana’s longtime rival Uruguay, and South Korea.

The four-time African Champion is set to have a reunion with Uruguay in the second group game after Portugal, certainly a match that rekindles memories of what transpired at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, where they exited in the quarterfinals, losing on penalties to the South Americans.

After 120 minutes, the Black Stars were awarded a penalty following a handball clearance by Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez. A goal would have ushered the West Africans into the semi-finals. However, the Black Stars missed out on the historical feat when Ghana’s all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan missed the penalty.

The u-20 World Cup winner and current Great Olympics midfielder, on the Class Morning Show on Class 91.3 FM, revealed Ghana’s chances at the 2022 World Cup and stressed on the need for the country not to seek vengeance for the devastating 2010 loss at the hands of the Uruguayans.

“Whoever tells you our group is not difficult, isn’t telling you the truth,” Agyemang Badu said and added: “Well, everyone has his or her opinion.”

“But for me, the group is very, very difficult. It is not tricky, but difficult,” he stressed and warned: “You can’t go on revenge without planning very well.”

“The kind of team the Uruguayans have now, I am afraid, I haven’t even spoken about Portugal, that’s our first game,” he worried.

The Ghanaian football star also highlighted that: “Uruguay sacked their longest serving coach Oscar Tabarez, who spent almost a decade with them, but are still a tough nut to crack under new gaffer Diego Alonso who led the team to qualifying for the 2022 World Cup and are currently unbeaten in the last couple of games.”

The 31-year-old midfielder further admitted Uruguay has evolved over the past years with the team currently boasting of top-quality talents plying their trade in major European leagues.

He cited: “Edison Cavani, yes he is aging, but he has 3 goals to his name with club side Valencia in the Spanish league; Darwin Nunez, his exploits with Benfica before moving to Premier League side Liverpool; Luis Suarez is still active; Federico Valverde with Real Madrid is regarded as, arguably, one of the top three midfielders in world football; Rodrigo Bentancur at Tottenham,” to host of the Class Morning Show, Kofi Oppong Asamoah.

“It is an all-round team so I can understand when Ghanaians are fixated on the Uruguayan national team,” he further noted before expressing optimism: “But for me no, with good preparations we can perform in Qatar.”

The Black Stars have been tasked by His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to reach the semis of the World Cup, an expected improvement on the 2010 finish in South Africa.

Coach Otto Addo and his technical team will open camping on November 10, in Abu Dhabi, before the announcement of the complete 26-man squad on November 14.

There is also a final international friendly against the World Cup-bound Switzerland team on November 17.

Emmanuel Agyemang Badu was part of the team that finished at the quarter-final stage of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. That achievement meant Ghana had joined Senegal and Cameroon as the only three African countries to reach that stage of the tournament.

  • What Darren Bent, Asamoah Gyan said about Partey’s exceptional display against Nottingham Forest

Thomas Partey, a midfielder from the Black Stars, had an outstanding performance for Arsenal against Nottingham Forest in the English Premier League.

With lavish progressive passes that cut Forest loose and rendered their defensive structure useless as the Gunners pounded them 5-0, Partey masterminded an Arsenal carnage at the Emirate Stadium.

In addition to the astounding display, Partey scored a stunning curler from outside the box, bending the ball from a Reiss Nelson setup to the top corner.
The goal was an exact duplicate of one he scored against Tottenham a few weeks prior.

After the game, former Sunderland and England striker, Darren Bent pointed out the importance of Thomas Partey to Arsenal.

“Thomas Partey is key to this Arsenal team, more control more protection for the back line,” he wrote on Twitter.

The post saw a comment from former Black Stars striker, Asamoah Gyan could not agree more with his former teammate as he commented “facts”.

Arsenal, who are on top of the table are yet to lose a game in the EPL when the former Atletico Madrid man is on the field.

The North London side have had an impressive start to the season as they lead the standings with 31 points, two points above reigning champions Manchester City.

Asamoah Gyan who made his professional debut for Liberty Professionals in 2003 and enjoyed active football till the end of the 2020/2021 season has named 2010 as his best year in his career.

  • Kwadwo Asamoah and I had best chemistry – Asamoah Gyan

In terms of playing style, former Ghana international Asamoah Gyan regarded former Black Stars, Juventus, and Inter Milan midfielder Kwadwo Asamoah as his best teammate during his time with the national side.

Asamoah Gyan started playing for the Black Stars in 2003, and after 109 appearances for Ghana, he holds the record for most appearances ( until recently equalled by Andre Dede Ayew).

He participated in three FIFA World Cups and seven AFCONs during that time.

He leads Africa in World Cup goal scoring with six goals and leads Ghana in all-time international goals with 51.

“My teammates trusted me. When you are in a team where your teammates trust you, it makes things easier. They know you have pace so they don’t even look when they are giving you a pass. They just try to put the ball behind the opponent’s defence and they know you can get it”, he revealed as the secret to his success.

Reminiscing on his Black Stars career on “Soccer Chat” with Fiifi Banson on GHOne TV, he revealed that he appreciated the rapport on the field that he built with Kwadwo Asamoah.

“Although Kwadwo Asamoah was playing behind me, the communication was there. He was like a number 10 so he knew every movement I was making.”

Gyan was quick to add that, “there were others too. Sulley Muntari, Laryea Kingston and Stephen Appiah. All of them knew my movements so when passing the ball to me they did not need to look.”

Gyan believes that, for the upcoming strikers to reach the heights he attained at the Black Stars they will have to cultivate the habit of speaking with the midfielders before games.

“When you’re going into a game, call the midfielders and tell them how you want the ball to be placed for you. At least one to two of such chances might work. If you do not communicate before the game, things may go wrong during the game”, he noted.

He also gave the upcoming strikers a key dose from the striker’s manual.

“As a striker, my advice to the youngsters is that when you get into position (the 18 yard box), you just have to hit the target, your eyes must be fixed on the ball because you already know where the post is. How to strike the ball is very key, make sure you strike it well”, Gyan added.

Asamoah Gyan believes the Black Stars will be scoring more goals if the attackers are given the needed ball supplies especially when they are making good runs.

“When a striker is making some runs, just feed him with the ball. Maybe not every time, but give it a try. Don’t wait till you are under pressure to score a goal or racing against time before you begin to get in through balls for the striker”, he opined.

  • I am not ready to feature at 2022 World Cup, says Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars skipper, Asamoah Gyan has ruled himself out of the upcoming 2022 World Cup.

The 36-year-old dominated the headlines for the wrong reasons after he disclosed he is looking forward to making a return to the national team ahead of the Mundial in Qatar in an interview with the BBC.

However, speaking to GHOne TV in an interview, Gyan admitted that his physical conditions are not suitable for competitive football now and that he will not force himself into the conversation about who should be called up for the tournament.

According to him, it will be a dream come true to play his fourth World Cup but he is not unaware of the fact that he is not in the best shape for football.

“The World Cup is every footballer’s dream,” he said. “If I’m fit to play active football and I’m invited to play for the national team, why not. It’s not like 15 years ago when I was young and competitive and could argue to be in the starting line-up.

“This is a different thing together. Right now people want you to go in and show your experience. The thing is you just have to be fit and be ready for competitive football. If I’m fit and invited into the national team, why not? Every player will embrace such an opportunity. This is the case where I’m not ready now. If I’m not ready but the FA and staff feel they need me now, I will be available. That one is up to them,” he added.

Gyan remains the country’s top goalscorer with 51 goals and Africa’s top goalscorer in the history of the World Cup with six goals.

The former Sunderland and Liberty Professionals forward has played in three World Cups in Germany, South Africa, and Brazil in 2006, 2010, and 2014.

  • Former Ghana President J.A Kuffour explains why Black Stars impressed at 2006 World Cup

Former Ghana President John Agyekum Kuffour explained why the Black Stars impressed during the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

The West African powerhouse who were making their debut at the World Cup progressed ahead of top ranked countries like USA and Czech Republic.

Ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the former Ghana leader has disclosed Ghana performed during the 2006 edition because the players were physically fit.

Addressing the Ghana FA delegation at his residence, Mr. JA Kuffour urged the current players to be strong physically in order to compete in the Asian country.

“We must be physically strong at the World Cup because in 2006, the Black Stars performed better because of the strength of the team, you look at the captain, Stephen Appiah and then characters like Sulley Muntari, you can’t just push Sulley down. The Asamoah Gyan’s, and the Essiens were physically fit”

“So one thing I pray you would ensure they go to the pitch physically fit to battle with other countries. We shouldn’t be walkovers, so we must be strong, smart and have stamina and then towards goal, we must work as a team, single purpose team to hit into the post”

“When you do that I’m sure you will come away with flying colours. So you have all my blessings, and prayer. I pray that it shouldn’t be only first round, they should continue to quarter and semifinals. The nation awaits good news from the team” he said.

To date, the only African player to ever win the Ballon d’Or, Weah clinched the award in 1995—the first year that the prize was opened to non-European players.

In that year, he defeated Jurgen Klinsmann—in second place—by 144 votes to 108, and would also pick up 13 votes the year afterwards.

    Finidi George

One of the players defeated by Weah in 1995, Finidi actually picked up six votes that year—the only occasion when the Nigeria wideman would receive any Ballon d’Or recognition.

This return left him level with Franco Baresi down in joint-21st in the rankings, and ahead of the likes of Roberto Baggio and Ronaldo.

1995 was arguably Finidi’s peak year, as he clinched five titles with Ajax, including the Champions League and the Eredivisie.

    Tony Yeboah

A Golden Boot winner in both England and Germany, Yeboah received five votes in 1995 as he made an excellent early impact at Leeds United.

The Ghana international scored 24 goals in his first 40 league appearances in England, and was twice named the Premier League Player of the Month in 1995.

    Nwankwo Kanu

A year after Finidi had received his only Ballon d’Or vote, Kanu was also in the running for the prestigious award, having scored 13 goals in 30 Eredivisie matches before securing an ill-fated move to Internazionale.

He received 14 votes in the 1996 Ballon d’Or voting, putting him ahead of the 1995 winner Weah, and above the likes of Gabriel Batistuta, Raul and Didier Deschamps.

In 1999, he received two further votes, putting him level with Ronaldo and Hernan Crespo.

    Victor Ikpeba

1997 was a year to remember for Ikpeba, the Prince of Monaco, as he became a Ligue 1 winner with the Club of the Principality.

He received two votes in the Ballon d’Or—the only African player to do so—and also won the African Footballer of the Year award.

El-Hadji Diouf & Papa Bouba Diop

    2002 was Senegal’s year.

They may have fallen just short in the Africa Cup of Nations, but they followed up their run to the final in that competition by reaching the quarter-finals of the World Cup—at the time, only the second African nation to do so.

Diouf and Diop—both on whom received two votes in the Ballon d’Or voting—were among the key figures in those tournaments.

The former, in particular, excelled on the fields of Japan and South Korea, while the latter netted the winner as Senegal defeated reigning world and European champions France 1-0 in the World Cup opener.

    Samuel Eto’o

He may have never won a Ballon d’Or, but Eto’o received votes in eight separate years, and was nominated—but received no votes—on two further occasions.

In 2004—the first year in which he picked up points—he received seven votes—and would make the standings every season for the next eight campaigns.

    Didier Drogba

Drogba, like his rival Eto’o, also received votes for the first time in 2004, tying with the likes of Frank Lampard and Gianluigi Buffon on five points.

The Ivorian powerhouse—a Champions League winner with Chelsea in 2012—also matched Eto’o in receiving votes in eight years.

Intriguingly, Drogba’s best year was 2007, when he finished fourth behind Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Lionel Messi, and not his European Cup-winning campaign.

    Michael Essien

Drogba’s Chelsea teammate Essien received votes in two separate years; 2005 and 2007.

2005, of course, was the year when the Bison ended his time in France at Olympique Lyonnais, with a Ligue 1 winner’s medal, before moving to Chelsea where he’d go on to clinch another title in 2006.

In terms of performances, however, perhaps 2006-07 was Essien’s zenith; he was named Chelsea’s Player of the Year, Ghana Player of the Year, and won two domestic cups.

It’s tantalizing to imagine what he could have achieved over the subsequent years had injury not intervened.

    Fredi Kanoute

One of Africa’s underrated modern greats, Kanoute received his one and only Ballon d’Or nomination in 2007.

He finished a respectable 11th on the ballot, ahead of former winner Ronaldinho and Steven Gerrard, but with a fraction of the votes of eventual winner Kaka.

This was arguably the Mali international’s finest year, as he won a cup treble with Sevilla and became the first player born outside Africa to win the African Footballer of the Year award.

    Emmanuel Adebayor

In 2008, it was the turn of another fine African striker—Adebayor—to receive his one and only Ballon d’Or nomination.

This was the year when the Togo frontman enjoyed the most productive campaign of his career, netting 24 goals in 36 league appearances for Arsenal as they finished third in the top flight and reached the Champions League quarter-finals.

    Yaya Toure

Nominated for the Ballon d’Or on five occasions between 2009 and 2015, Yaya established himself as the finest African midfielder of his generation and rubbed shoulders with some of the world’s top stars—in the tier just below Ronaldo and Messi—during his time at Manchester City.

In 2009, while still at Barcelona, Toure secured his only Champions League title—and received his first Ballon d’Or nomination.

    Asamoah Gyan

Another African striker whose finest year was rewarded with Ballon d’Or votes.

For Gyan, whose club career has left a lot to be desired, 2010 represented the pinnacle of his career, as he made an unforgettable contribution to Ghana’s World Cup campaign as the Black Stars reached the quarter-finals in South Africa.

Unfortunately, Gyan has never subsequently been able to truly recapture the magic of that summer.

    Riyad Mahrez
Algeria’s Mahrez has been included in the Ballon d’Or classement on four separate occasions, including finishing 12th in the ranking this time around.

Unsurprisingly, his highest position came in 2016—the year of Leicester City’s miraculous title-winning campaign—when he came seventh in the ranking, while he was also inside the top 10 in 2019.

Not an undisputed starter for Manchester City this season, and absent from the World Cup, is this the last we’ll see of Mahrez in the Ballon d’Or ranking?

    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

As Yaya stepped down from the limelight at Manchester City, as Pep Guardiola swept into the Etihad Stadium on a wave of new ideas, Aubameyang stepped into his place as Africa’s pre-eminent global star.

The Gabon international has featured in the Ballon d’Or rankings on three occasions, beginning in 2016, the same year he won the Bundesliga Player of the Year award.

    Sadio Mane

The reigning African Footballer of the Year has made little secret of his desire to win the Ballon d’Or, and after finishing fourth on the podium in 2019, he went closer again this year when he finished second – pipped only by Robert Lewandowski.

Mane won the Champions League in 2019, and followed that up with the Premier League title in 2020.

This year, his second-placed finish in the Ballon d’Or was preceded by his influential displays in Senegal’s maiden Africa Cup of Nations success, and he still has the World Cup ahead of him.

    Mohamed Salah

Salah has finished inside the top six in the Ballon d’Or rankings in 2018 and 2019, and like Mane, may yet have the chance to reach the pinnacle of the sport.

However, he may never get a better opportunity than in 2018, when he enjoyed a record-breaking maiden season in Liverpool and inspired the Reds to the Champions League final.

Had injury not brought a premature end to that final against Real Madrid—and overshadowed his World Cup—might Salah have finished a little higher in the standings?

He finished seventh in 2021, and fifth again this year.

    Kalidou Koulibaly

A regular feature in the Serie A Team of the Season, and the division’s reigning Defender of the Year, Koulibaly made the Ballon d’Or standings in 2019 for the first time.

It was a magnificent achievement for the Napoli centre-back, who became the first African defender ever to receive any votes for the finest individual prize in the game.

    Sebastien Haller

Following his goalscoring exploits in the Eredivisie last term, Haller made his debut in the Ballon d’Or rankings this season, finishing in 13th place overall.

The striker netted 21 goals in the top flight and 11 in eight Champions League games, endearing himself to Ajax fans, but illness has prevented him from taking to the field yet this season.

    Asisat Oshoala

Oshoala became the first African woman to make the shortlist for the Ballon d’Or Feminin when she finished 16th in the rankings this year.

  • Stop the joke and nonsense – Armah Senegal slams persons calling for Asamoah Gyan’s return to Black Stars

Ghana football legend, Emmanuel Armah ‘Senegal’ has taken a swipe at persons crusading for the return of Asamoah Gyan to the Black Stars ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Gyan, 36, has confirmed his desire to feature at the Mundial in Qatar despite being clubless for the past two years.

Armah Senegal, however, speaking in an interview said he is dismayed by the calls which he believes are borne out of ignorance and mere comedy.

According to him, if invitations to the team were about reputation and not form then he also should be called.

“I don’t follow certain things. Those who are talking about it I want to tell them that football is based on your performance. We will use your performance to call you before you play the national team,” he said.

“The players that they’ve mentioned their names to rejoin the Black Stars how many league matches have they played? Which team are they playing now? They are just joking. To be able to play football your performance must be good. You have to perform at the club level. That will create the chance for you to be called. They are just joking and gossiping. That’s what I can say

    .

“Which team Asamoah Gyan is playing now? Give me the answer. Then I can also come and play. Let’s put the jokes aside and gather the players for them to be serious. God will bless you when you are serious. If you are not serious God will not bless you.

“We have to stop making noise and stop the politics in football. Football is not politics. It is a game of passion. We should not envy the players who are performing but we should rather invite those who are performing in their various leagues. In the final squad, some will make it and others will be dropped”, he told Ghanasportspage.com.

Among the persons advocating for Gyan’s inclusion in the Black Stars team for the World Cup is former GFA chairman, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho Tamkloe.

Dr. Nyaho Tamakloe believes that Gyan’s experience and goal-scoring prowess makes him a suitable choice for Ghana’s games.

Gyan last played for the national team during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Egypt in 2019 and he last played for Ghana Premier League side, Legon Cities during the 2019/20 season.

He named Michael Essien and Thomas Partey as his base midfielders, while Mohammed Polo and Abedi Pele were his right and left-wingers.

  • Asamoah Gyan needs to work on himself – Baffour Gyan reacts to Ghana’s all-time top scorer quest to return to action

Former Ghana international, Baffour Gyan has called on his junior brother, Asamoah Gyan to work more on himself if he is keen about returning to action.

The former Sunderland star is currently without a club after leaving Legon Cities at the end of the 2020/2021 season.

Gyan, 37, in an interview with Kumasi-based Wontumi FM disclosed reiterated his desire to return to action.

But Baffour Gyan who believes the former Sunderland star is not ready to play active football at the moment has called on him to work more on himself.

“He knows much about football and you can’t just get out from your house to go to the field to play football. If you decide to play when you are not ready the game will teach you a lesson, for me, he is not ready and he need to work more on himself” he said when asked about Asamoah Gyan’s quest to return to the field.

Asamoah, 37, has scored a record 51 goals for Ghana in 109 appearances, which is also a record.

He is the African player with the most World Cup goals, scoring six times in three tournaments.

  • Andre Ayew is not my friend – Asamoah Gyan opens up

Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan has opened up on his relationship with Andre Ayew, saying the Al Sadd forward is not his friend.

The pair have featured for the national team for the past decade.

They both played in the 2010 and 2014 World Cup in South Africa and Brazil respectively.

However, the relationship got soar when Gyan’s captaincy was stripped off and handed over to Ayew ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] in Egypt.

He has been unattached since leaving Ghana Premier League side Legon Cities after the 2020/21 league season.

  • 2022 World Cup: Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan undoubtedly confident Black Stars will progress from group stage

Former Black Stars skipper Asamoah Gyan is optimistic the Black Stars will progress from the group stage at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Black Stars is returning to the global showpiece after missing out in Russia 2018.

Ghana has been housed in Group H against Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea.

The West African powerhouse failed to impress during the international break, losing 3-0 to Brazil and recording a narrow win over Nicaragua.

Despite the team’s uninspiring performance during the international break, Gyan believes the team can progress with ease at the mundial.

“We can qualify from our group with ease,” he said on Kessben media.

“In 2006, we were the underdogs and coming up against the Czech Republic and Italy, they did not give us the chance but we went there and we performed.

“In 2010, the same things happened. We went there and lift the flag of Ghana high by playing in the quarterfinals which was an improvement.

“Before you can win the World Cup, you need to qualify from your group which is possible so I believe that these players can do that.

“The players must believe that they can do it and it is possible,” he concluded.

  • It’s frustrating watching Black Stars – Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan has opined that watching the team play recently is frustrating due to the lack of creating of chances.

Having secured a 3-0 win against Madagascar in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifiers, the Black Stars have struggled to win games.

In the September international break, Ghana suffered a 3-0 defeat against Brazil before recording a 1-0 win over Nicaragua.

Having watched the games, the 36-year-old Gyan says it’s frustrating to watch the Black Stars.

According to him, the lack of fluidity and lack of chances must be worked on by the technical team.

“In the last six games played, Black Stars have struggled to create any meaningful chances and it is frustrating,” he told Kumasi-based Kessben FM.

“It is better to create chances and fail to convert them but in our case, we are not creating at all.

“The players must be bold and take the risk because this is the World Cup and you must be ready for the risk,” he added.

Ghana will take on Switzerland in their final friendly before flying to Qatar for the Mundial which kick off from November 20 to December 18.

  • World Cup trophy: ‘I’m sure an African country will win it one day’ – Asamoah Gyan

Former Ghana international, Asamoah Gyan, says Africa needs to plan and inject an effort to win the World Cup.

The former Liberty Professionals striker remains the country’s all-time leading goal scorer with six goals having featured in 2006, 2010, and 2014 in Germany South Africa, and Brazil respectively.

In the history of the global showpiece, the farthest an African country has reached the Mundial is the quarter-final round; Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002, and Ghana in 2010.

Gyan suggests the quarter-final has been Africa’s long-standing boundary simply because there’s no calculated attempt from the continent.

“We have to make sure we plan ahead, I think that is our problem. Some countries plan years – let’s say ‘in 10 years we have to win the World Cup’. So it’s a plan people take, and that’s why I’m saying it’s a process.

“I’m sure an African country will win it one day, but I don’t know when,” Gyan said in an interview.

“As an African, that is my prayer, I want an African country to also win it, that is what every African is hoping for [but] it depends how the teams approach the tournament. I remember in 2006, the Czech Republic was number 3 in the World, the United States, was number 5, and then there was Germany and Italy. So we [Ghana] were underdogs, everyone thought we were going home.

“But we were able to get through to the next stage of the competition. When you are going to a tournament, how you approach it matters, not the kind of players you have. Statistically, there are favorites, but you have to go and see what happens.”

Meanwhile, Gyan, 36, has shared his desire of making a return with the Black Stars ahead of this year’s edition in Qatar, a wish many Ghanaian faithful are against since he has been out of professional football for close to a year.

  • Otto Addo will get his tactics right before World Cup – Asamoah Gyan

Former Ghana captain, Asamoah Gyan believes head coach of the Black Stars, Otto Addo, will get his tactics right ahead of the 2022 World Cup.

Addo, 44, has come under intense pressure following Ghana’s friendly games against Brazil and Nicaragua.

The Black Stars suffered a 3-0 defeat in their first September friendly before beating 139th-ranked Nicaragua by 1-0 in their final game held in Spain.

The team’s set-up and the tactics in both games have been questioned by several Ghanaian football fans.

And with less than two months to the start of the Mundial in Qatar, Gyan, who played in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 World Cups believes Addo and his technical team will get their tactics right before the start of the tournament.

“In football when you suffer defeat, everyone will have their opinion,” he told Kumasi-based Kessben FM.

“The first half was not good but the second half was much better and he did that to avoid humiliation.

“He will keep trying and I believe before the World Cup start, Otto Addo will get his tactics right,” he added.

Ghana will take on Switzerland in their final game before the start of the global showpiece in Qatar in November.

The Black Stars have been housed in Group H alongside Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay.

The 22nd edition of the World Cup will kick off from November 20 to December 18.
