Ghana legend, Asamoah Gyan, has described the year 2010 as the best year in his playing career as a footballer.

Gyan became one of the best strikers in Europe for both his country and club.

  • The impressive numbers behind Andre Ayew’s 109 caps for Ghana

It is appropriate to refer to Andre Ayew as a Ghanaian legend in light of his recent success.

Only one other player in Ghana’s history has played in 109 games, and that man is the captain.

In 2019, Asamoah Gyan’s record was matched by Ayew at the Africa Cup of Nations competition in Egypt.

Ayew reached the joint-most caps for Ghana on Tuesday in a friendly match against Nicaragua in Lorca, Spain.

Ayew didn’t start the game, but he was added in the 82nd minute.

As Ayew onto the field at the Estadio Francisco Artés Carrasco, Ghanaian supporters cheered him, showing their admiration for the Al Sadd star’s commitment to the Black Stars and hard work.

It was a memorable moment for Ayew, who is now determined to own the record entirely.

The impressive numbers behind Ayew’s latest achievement
Ayew accomplished the impressive feat in one year less than Asamoah Gyan.

Gyan took 16 years to reach 109 appearances, while Ayew took 15 years. This is because Gyan made his Black Stars debut in 2003, while Ayew made his debut in 2007.

Ayew has 23 goals and seven assists for a total of 30 goal contributions, which is outstanding.

Only the legendary Karim Abdul Razak has scored more goals for Ghana than Ayew (25). Ayew will undoubtedly surpass him.

Ayew is fifth on Ghana’s all-time top scorer list, but he tops the list in the Africa Cup of Nations because he has scored more goals than any Ghanaian in the competition’s history. The 32-year-old has scored 10 goals.

Ayew is Ghana’s all-time appearance leader in the Africa Cup of Nations (33).

The former Swansea City and West Ham United player has played over 7500 minutes for the Black Stars.

We can make adjustments as needed, but we must use the one system at which we excel.

Former captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, popularly known as Baby jet has taken a swipe at the current crop of midfielders of the senior national football team.

According to Gyan, the midfielders are in the habit of not making passes to strikers who responsibility is to score goals.

He made this observation when Black Stars came up against Nicaragua on Tuesday evening.

Inaki Williams played as a lone striker in the match and despite his efforts, the final ball was never passed to him.

  • 2022 World Cup: Ghana captain Andre Ayew not keen about revenge against Uruguay

Ghana captain Andre Ayew is not bent on avenging their painful defeat to Uruguay in 2010 when they face off in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The Black Stars has been paired against Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea in Group H.

The biggest soccer mundial will be staged in Qatar between November and December with 32 countries set to battle it out for the ultimate.

The Black Stars will tackle Portugal in the opening game of the Group before facing Asian and South American giants South Korea and Uruguay respectively.

Ghana were denied a semifinal berth at the World Cup courtesy of a Luis Suarez handball incident in the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

The former Liverpool and Barcelona forward prevent a goal-bound header from Ghana’s Dominic Adiyiah in the final minute of extra time at the Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.

Suarez essentially produced a save on the line worthy of a goalkeeper and he was shown a straight red card as a result.

Ghana was also awarded a penalty, but Asamoah Gyan’s attempt from 12 yards crashed into the crossbar, which resulted in Suarez going mental on the touchline and sent the game to a shootout.

Uruguay won the penalty shoot-out to progress to the semifinals with Luis Suarez celebrated for his demonic act.

Asked if Ghana game against Uruguay a revenge will be, Ayew said, “As team leader, I don’t believe we should view this game as revenge. Instead, we must be smart enough to recognise that it is a match we need points from. We can’t ignore history, but what Luis Suarez [Uruguay footballer] did is something I could have done in the same situation [used his hand to stop a goal-bound shot in 2010]. It hurt us all. But that’s part of football and it happened years ago”

“We just want to win against Uruguay after everything that has been said in the media. As a player, if you go into a game with the intent of retaliation, you can make a lot of mistakes and be hyper. We just need to stay calm, follow the plan and try to win the game, or do whatever we can to advance to the next stage” he told Al Jazeera.

  • “If he has the stamina, why not?” – Nyaho Tamakloe reacts to Asamoah Gyan’s desire to play at World Cup

Former Ghana Football Association President Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe appears to support Asamoah Gyan‘s desire to be part of the Black Stars squad for the 2022 World Cup.

Gyan, 36, stated in a recent interview that he has not retired and is planning a sensational return to the Black Stars after being sidelined since 2019. The former Sunderland striker revealed his desire to go to Qatar, but admitted he must be in peak physical condition to be considered.

Gyan, who hasn’t played competitive football in 15 months and has been without a club since October of last year, has begun training in the hopes of being fit enough to be considered by Black Stars coach Otto Addo.

”Asamoah Gyan has made an incredible mark in Ghana football. He is a good footballer and if he has the stamina, why not?” the Hearts of Oak board member said as quoted by Graphic Sports.

The majority of those who have responded to Gyan’s interview are against him, but Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe believes those who condemn Gyan because of his age should consider what Cameroon legend Roger Milla did for his country at the 1994 World Cup at the age of 38, as well as England’s Stanley Matthews during the 1950s.

“Roger Milla opted to play in the World Cup at an old age and did well. We can also talk about Stanley Matthews of England who was a figure in the team and was known as the tactical magician.

“He was later invited to Ghana by Ken Harrison, who was then General Manager of Hearts of Oak in the 1950s,” he recalled.

“If he can train with the present team and the coach finds him fit, he should be invited because I strongly believe if he can match the tempo at training and the physique, he should be able to play.

“I think Gyan has the skill because when he is running with the ball, defenders fear to come near him. He has the skills and tactics but the strength to play is the problem. If he can work on that, he will be a fantastic addition to the World Cup,” he added.

Gyan has scored a record 51 goals for Ghana.

Former Hearts of Oak attacker Charles Taylor has said it is impracticable for Asamoah Gyan to play with the Black Stars at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Speaking on Angel FM, Mr Taylor explained that the former Black Stars captain would not be fit enough to join the club after not being active for a while after leaving Legon Cities.

He noted that although Gyan has a remarkable history with the senior national football team, much cannot be said about his recent performance with local clubs.

“We have regular fitness and match fitness. Even those who get injured and return struggle to hit the ground running. We are not talking about history, we’re looking at current performance. He has done his bit for the country,” he said.

For Charles Taylor, he believes no competent coach would take back Asamoah to play for the Black Stars.

“I don’t think any competent coach will entertain this. We can’t take someone who is not playing for any club,” he said.

  • Asamoah Gyan intensifies training for a return to the Black stars

The legendary striker was photographed working out at Ajax Park in Legon in an effort to get in shape before the competition starts on November 20.

Gyan, who has 51 goals for Ghana, said he is trying to make a surprise comeback as he seeks a spot in the World Cup squad for his country.

Gyan has been on the sidelines; it’s been three years since he last played for the Black Stars.
The Sunderland player entered the game against Tunisia in the round of 16 of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations as a substitute.

He has since not been invited with his club career in recent years making it very difficult to consider him for selection.

Gyan last played a competitive game in May 2021, representing Legon Cities against WAFA in a Ghana Premier League. Months later, he terminated his contract with the Accra-based club and is still looking for a new one.

The former Al Ain man hasn’t been active for 16 months, leading many to believe that he has retired. But in an interview with BBC, Gyan dispelled claims of retirement, suggesting he has unfinished business, especially with Black Stars.

“Anything can happen. You know it’s happened before. I’m talking about Cameroon in 1994 with Roger Milla you know coming back from retirement to play in the World Cup. I haven’t retired yet. I haven’t announced my retirement. You know I’ve been out for almost two years now due to injuries, due to my body,” he told BBC.

“I just need to get my body back in shape. So I’ve started training of course so I need to get back in shape and see how my body reacts to playing competitive football. Talent-wise, I reckon it’s there already so I just have to prepare physically and then we’ll see what happens.”

“Honestly, I haven’t spoken to anybody at all. It’s part of the plan. I just want to make sure and see how my body reacts first. Me and my manager, we’ve been talking behind the scenes, you know and everything so we just have to make sure, we know what we are doing. Everything is in progress, and everything looks positive. We’ll see what happens. There might be a surprise.”

Six of Gyan’s 51 goals have come in the World Cup, making him the continent’s leading scorer in the competition.

  • Alice Annum: The story of the first Ghanaian athlete to be nicknamed “Baby Jet”

One of the most well-known football nicknames in Ghana is “Baby Jet,” and whenever it is used, it is in reference to Asamoah Gyan, a former Black Stars captain, and Ghana’s all-time leading scorer.

Asamoah Gyan explained in a previous interview that he got the nickname because of his fast pace and baby face when he was younger.

Unlike Gyan, Alice Annum, the first Ghanaian sports personality to bear the nickname, earned it as a result of his lightning speed on the tartan tracks.

Annum is a retired Ghanaian athlete who competed for Ghana on the international stage from the 1960s to the 1970s.

The three-time All-African Games gold medallist began as a long jumper but went on to become one of Ghana’s greatest sprinters of all time.

The legendary sprinter, born in Accra on October 20, 1948, will turn 74 in just over two months.

Her talent was discovered during the now-defunct annual National Sports Festivals. She was awarded a Ghanaian athletes’ scholarship to study and compete at the University of Tennessee.

Annum competed for Ghana in four different events: the 100m, 200m, 4x100m, and long jump. After becoming the first Ghanaian female to compete in the Olympics in 1964, she set the standard for many Ghanaian women to follow.

Annum failed to qualify in the Women’s long jump with a leap of 545cm in her first Olympic Games appearance in Tokyo.

She later represented Ghana in Mexico in 1968 and Munich in 1972. In the 1968 Olympics, Annum competed in the 200m and Long Jump. She did not advance from round one of the 200m, finishing seventh in her heat.

She did, however, make it to the final in the Long Jump with a leap of 5.61m but failed to make the podium.

Four years later in Munich, Alice Annum focused on the 100m and 200m and made significant progress in both events.

Annum made history by becoming the first female Ghanaian sprinter to compete in both the Women’s 100m and 200m finals.

She finished sixth in the 100m with a time of 11.41 seconds and seventh in the 200m with a personal best of 22.89s.

How did the Baby jet come about?

Annum got the nickname Baby Jet after chalking enormous success at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1970.

She won two silver medals, one in the 100m and the other in the 200m event, which set the tone for her stunning performance at the 1972 Olympics in Munich.

She finished her career with a total of six medals, three gold (all won at the All-African Games), two silver, and one bronze (1974 Commonwealth Games).

  • I threatened to quit Accra Academy before Asamoah Gyan was admitted – J.E Sarpong

Veteran coach J.E Sarpong recounted the lengths he had to go to before Ghana’s all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan was admitted into Accra Academy for his secondary school education.

He says that the then headmistress of the school was averse to admitting Asamoah Gyan into the school and he had to go on a two-week strike and threaten to quit the school before Gyan was accepted into the school.

“The Head Mistress say no when I recommended that they give him (Asamoah Gyan) admission to Accra Academy,” he told Ernest Brew Smith.

“I threatened to quit the job and that forced her hand to admit him after sitting away from work for two weeks,” he revealed.

Coach Sarpong saw the talents of Gyan and honed and nurtured his talents into a top asset for the nation.

Gyan has admitted on countless occasions the outstanding role coach Sarpong played in his career as a football, especially as a youngster.

He even honoured the veteran coach during the launch of his biography this year at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra.

Asamoah Gyan who is Ghana’s all-time scorer with 51 goals in 109 matches has been without a club since leaving Legon Cities two seasons ago.

  • FLASHBACK: I never had anything to do with Castro’s death – Asamoah Gyan

“When things start going well for you, they’ll link it to rituals. Can’t Africans also thank God for his wonders in people’s lives? I never had anything to do with Castro’s death.”

These were the words of footballer, Asamoah Gyan, in a 2017 interview on the Delay Show.

The former Black Stars captain has for years been labelled as the man who sacrificed his friend, singer Castro for fame. An allegation he has strongly denied to date.

Responding to rumours of his involvement in the disappearance and death of Hiplife musician, Castro who drowned at Ada on July 6, 2014, the celebrated footballer lamented how a section of the public had linked him to the unfortunate incident.

According to the footballer, he can’t fathom why a section of Ghanaians have also linked his success to money rituals and ‘juju’.

“I want to ask, do Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo also deal in black magic? These footballers have also made it. Can we say they also sacrificed people? That is the question I want to ask,” Gyan quizzed.

Asamoah Gyan acknowledged Castro as the person who first introduced him to music. The two collaborated on a song titled ‘African Girls’ before the former’s demise.

According to Gyan, he hasn’t fully recovered from the death of the award-winning singer.

“Sometimes when his songs are being played, I think a lot. As human, you have to let some things go, but a lot of things bring back his memory…he introduced me to music, although I already had a talent for singing. I love his songs, but when it is being played brings back so much memories. I feel emotional,” he disclosed in the 2017 interview.

Wednesday, July 6, 2022, marked eight years of Castro’s demise. He was declared legally dead in 2021 after seven years of his disappearance.

  • Here are four unforgettable goals Asamoah Gyan scored for the Black Stars

Ghana’s all-time top scorer and African football great, Asamoah Gyan, celebrate his 36th birthday today, November 22.

Just as his day of birth is difficult to forget, he scored four goals that will also live with Ghanaians until the end of time.

In total, Gyan scored 51 goals for the Blacks Stars in 109 appearances, an enviable achievement that puts him 6th on the list of most goals scored for an African country and 39th in the world.

Scored Ghana’s first-ever goal at the World Cup

Black Stars made their first-ever World Cup appearance in Germany in 2006 and would not want to end it with an embarrassing exit of two straight defeats.

In a must-win game against the Czech Republic after losing 2-0 to Italy in the opening group match, it was 20-year-old Gyan who gave Ghana a bright start.

He controlled Stephen Appiah’s sublime pass beautifully with his chest before drilling a left-footed shot to hand Ghana the lead in 2 minutes. The goal would go on to become the tournament’s fastest goal.

    The equaliser against England

Prior to the 2010 World Cup in which Ghana had qualified for the second successive time, Milovan Rajevac’s men engaged England in a friendly at Wembley.

A night the Ghanaian diaspora who were present will never forget. At 1-0 down and about 3 minutes to end proceedings, Gyan produced one of the best goals in his career. Danced his way through the defence before placing it into the left bottom corner with his weaker foot.

The winner against the USA at the 2010 World Cup

Ghana secured a maiden qualification to the quarter-finals with a memorable 2-1 win over the USA.

The match ended one-all in regulation time and thus travelled into extra time. The then Sunderland striker scored the winner in the 92nd minute with a lovely volley and followed up with a trademark dance that later became popular in the country.

The winner against Algeria at the AFCON 2015

    TWI NEWS

At the AFCON 2015, Ghana had lost 2-1 to Senegal in the opening group game and thus needed a win in the second match against an Algeria side that had beaten South Africa 3-1.

Ghana were on the urge of an early exit, 0-0 after 90 minutes and the referee had added 3 minutes. A long ball from Wakaso put Gyan on the chase with an Algerian defender. Gyan managed to get the first touch with the defender on him, sending him into the box but at a difficult angle and the defender still closing in. Sixty seconds left on the clock, that was the only moment to change the game, and he did it spectacularly by firing into the far post.

  • Asamoah Gyan demands $500,000 to play for Kotoko

Angel 102.9FM can exclusively reveal that Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has made an initial demand of around half a million dollars from Asante Kotoko in order to join them.

Conversations around where the “Baby Jet” is headed has intensified following his unfruitful stay with Indian Super League side NorthEast United.

The former Sunderland forward made eight appearances and scored 4 goals for NorthEast United. He has since returned to Ghana.

The Ghana all-time goalscorer has made several public pronouncements about his willingness to feature for the record Ghana Premier League Champions and it is believed that contact has been made between the two.

With the Ghana premier league nearing commencement for the 2020/2021 season, a price tag of $500,000 is what will possibly be the distance between Kotoko and the former Liberty Professionals player.

The time may just be right for the Gyan – Kotoko love affair but of course, at a cost of half a million dollars, Kotoko may struggle to seal the deal.
Speaking on Floodlight Sports with Saddick Adams on Angel 102.9, Samuel Anim Addo, manager for the 34-year-old striker justified his client’s asking price.

He asserts that Asamoah Gyan‘s value is above the reported $500,000 figure, saying even his off the pitch value is immense.

“With proper marketing, promotion and branding the impact of Asamoah Gyan on Kumasi Asante will be huge. So where from this agenda that the money is too much? That is very wrong. The man is ten times valuable than the figure which has been quoted. There are so many avenues Kotoko can get Gyan to raise revenue for the club to protect his image and the brand”.

The Ghana premier league returns in November.

But for Kotoko three competitions await them. As they will participate in the CAF Champions league, Ghana Premier League and the FA Cup. Kotoko will be hoping to name the squad for these tournaments soon.

  • Asamoah Gyan is worth more than $400,000 – Anim Addo

Business manager for former Black Stars striker, Asamoah Gyan, Samuel Anim Addo, has rubbished claims that his client is demanding a mammoth $400,000 as signing on a fee before joining Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

Asamoah Gyan is currently unattached to any club after leaving Indian Super League side NorthEast United in January.

Ghana’s all-time top scorer has not hidden his admiration and desire to play for Kumasi Asante Kotoko before hanging up his boots.

Gyan has been linked to Asante Kotoko throughout the transfer window with reports claiming the striker’s exorbitant signing on fee demand is stalling the deal.

Speaking in an interview with Accra based Angel FM, Samuel Anim Addo has rubbished those claims and says that even if the striker is making those demands what he will bring to Asante Kotoko is far more than the quoted sum of $400,000.

“Off the pitch, what is the value of Gyan before he plays for the club. I believe Gyan has a lot of impact in Kumasi and so if he should join the club it will improve their brand and marketing as well”

“So, anyone who did such an agenda is wrong because the man is ten times valuable than that figure so rather what is the best way to get him. There are so many avenues you can get him for him to also make a revenue for the club. You Look at his image and the brand Asamoah Gyan for the club. So whoever set that agenda has set a bad one indeed,” he said.

The 34-year-old has been linked with a transfer to boyhood club Asante Kotoko ahead of the 2020/21 season.

But the move is reported to have hit a snag after the former Sunderland striker demanded to be given 400,000 as signing-on fee before putting pen to paper.

Reports from Kumasi-based FOX FM suggest that the Porcupine Warriors do not want to pursue the transfer as they consider the player’s demand to be extravagant.

Asante Kotoko are keen to augment their attacking front ahead of the commencement of the Ghana Premier League and the CAF Champions League campaign.

  • It will only take a collective effort for Ghana to win trophies Asamoah Gyan

Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has stated emphatically that it will only take a collective effort for the Black Stars to win the Africa Cup of Nations that has eluded the country.

Black Stars have failed to win the African Cup of nations since lifting the Mundial in 1982.

Despite coming close twice in 2010 and 2015, Ghana lost in the finals to Egypt and Ivory Coast respectively.

In an interview with Adom TV, the all-time top scorer for Ghana lamented that winning a major trophy for the country is not down to individuals but rather a collective work.

“To win a trophy, it is not down to individuals. It is a collective work. Sometimes I joke with my friends that if football is a personal thing, I can say that I will go and win a tournament myself because I know the kind of mindset I have. What about others? You do not know the mindset of others”

“This is how it has become. Football is a collective job. I can make my mind on something whilst my teammate would not have made his mind. You can score two and concede three so there are so many things involved. To win a cup is not an easy task. If we are all in sync, definitely we can win the cup because we have the quality.” He concluded.
