Asamoah Gyan’s camp denounces NPP Bortianor Parliamentary  bid flyer

A circulating photo of a billboard aiming to confirm the potential parliamentary candidacy of renowned Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan within the New Patriotic Party for the Bortianor Ngleshie-Amanfro constituency has been swiftly refuted by Samuel Anim Addo, a recognized representative of the footballer and entrepreneur.

In an interview, Anim Addo labeled the reports as false, confirming Asamoah Gyan’s earlier position that he is currently not pursuing any political position.

When GhanaWeb reached out regarding the widely circulated photo on different social media platforms, Sammy Anim replied with a succinct “It’s false.”

Despite repeated denials by Asamoah Gyan, his name continues to be linked with the Bortianor Ngleshie-Amanfro seat owing to his stardom status, benevolent works, and alleged affiliations with the governing New Patriotic Party.

The incumbent Member of Parliament of the area, Sylvester Tetteh appeared to have given some substance to the rumors when he was quoted as saying that the camp of Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is seeking to replace him with Asamoah Gyan due to his affiliations with NPP flagbearer hopeful, Alan Kyeremanten.

A quote attributed to Sylvester Tetteh which went viral on various social media platforms mentions him to be hitting out at the Bawumia team for attempting to use legendary Ghanaian footballer, Asamoah Gyan to unseat him.

‘Gideon Boako and his likes are in my constituency, supporting Asamoah Gyan to contest me in our upcoming primaries just because I support Alan Kyerematen. But they should know that I’m a son of the land and I’m ready for their diabolic plans,” he is claimed to have said.

This comment infuriated a leading member of the Bawumia camp, Dr Gideon Boako who fired back.

Dr. Boakoa denied the accusations, stating that he has not met Asamoah Gyan in person and that he is hurt by the allegations.

“So this is how the likes of Sylvester Tetteh and supporters of Alan Kyeremanten want to run their campaign. I have never spoken to or met Baby Jet in person before. I have no idea he even wants to contest for parliamentary elections, let alone go and support him. SMH,” he said in reply to Sylvester Tetteh’s accusations.

Anim Addo, recognized as the agent of the football icon turned entrepreneur, dismissed the reports in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, reiterating Gyan’s previous stance that he currently has no intentions of pursuing political office.

Sammy Anim responded with a clear “Not true” when contacted by GhanaWeb regarding the widely circulated photo gaining traction on various social media platforms.

Despite Asamoah Gyan’s repeated denials, his name continues to be associated with the Bortianor Ngleshie-Amanfro constituency seat due to his celebrity status, philanthropic endeavors, and purported connections to the ruling New Patriotic Party.

The current Member of Parliament for the region, Sylvester Tetteh, seemed to lend some weight to the speculations when he was quoted mentioning that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s team is allegedly aiming to replace him with Asamoah Gyan, possibly due to Gyan’s ties to NPP flagbearer hopeful Alan Kyeremanten.

    Sylvester Tetteh

Sylvester Tetteh’s widely circulated quote across various social media platforms accuses the Bawumia team of trying to utilize Asamoah Gyan, the legendary Ghanaian footballer, to challenge his position.

Don’t kill yourself over marriage – Auntie B

Actress Auntie B has stressed the importance of marriage while cautioning against pursuing it to one’s detriment.

The renowned actress, known for her roles in popular TV series like Concert Party and Efiewura, said this on Thursday, July 6, 2023 in an interview with the media.

“I am not married at the moment,” she disclosed.

“Marriage is important, it’s good,” she said. “When by God’s grace, someone comes into your life and you get married, hold and cherish it dearly.”

However, “if you are not yet married, don’t kill yourself for it,” she added.

She shared examples of marriages she is aware of, one that ended in less than eight days and another where the person endured years of distressing experiences, likening it to the relentless battering of sea waves, despite maintaining a facade of normalcy in public.

“This person does not look [as good] as they did before marriage,” she noted, stressing that “It’s two things: if the opportunity comes, fine, but if it doesn’t, at this point in my life, I’m not bothered.”

In a near-comic remark, she said she had “tasted all there is from super small to super big” so much so that “if, naturally, the act [sex] was done through the mouth, I’d have lost all my teeth by now.”

She clarified: “It’s not like I double date or I am promiscuous but I have tasted it all before so if I am not yet married, I won’t kill myself.”

“Ultimately, may God’s will be done,” she added. “So, if God brings it, I’ll hold it and nurture it.”

She said “the man who will be lucky” to marry her will have such a great experience.

Auntie B intimated that she knows how to handle marriage and “pamper a man to get pampering from same”.

Auntie B advises women to prioritize pampering their men to prevent losing them to competitors who excel in that aspect.

She emphasizes that the foundation of a successful marriage lies in truth and understanding.

Additionally, she clarifies that she is not overly selective when it comes to choosing male partners.

“God created all men so I’m fine with whatever I get,” she added. “What matters is the level will correspond to mine so that when we’re in bed, everything will be great.”

She suggests that even if things do not go as expected, there are various intimate styles to explore. In the worst-case scenario, she believes it is her responsibility to nurture and appreciate her partner without complaining.

When asked about the possibility of marrying football superstar Asamoah Gyan, considering her publicly expressed feelings for him, she did not provide a direct response.

  • I haven’t planned anything with Asamoah Gyan to overthrow you – Alan’s boy “exposes” Bawumia’s assistant

Spokesperson for Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Gideon Boako, has refuted claims that he is endorsing renowned Ghanaian footballer Asamoah Gyan to run for the Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro parliamentary seat on behalf of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), with the intention of unseating current NPP Member of Parliament (MP) Sylvester Tetteh.

Hon. Sylvester Tetteh had accused Dr. Gideon Boako of orchestrating his defeat by supporting the influential and affluent Asamoah Gyan, purportedly due to Tetteh’s unwavering support for Alan Kyeremanten’s candidacy in the NPP flagbearership race.

However, Dr. Boako strongly emphasized that he has never engaged in such activities and has neither met nor spoken to Asamoah Gyan in person.

“So this is how the likes of Sylvester Tetteh and supporters of Alan Kyeremanten want to run their campaign. I have never spoken to or met Baby Jet in person before. I have no idea he even wants to contest for parliamentary elections, let alone go and support him. SMH,” he said in reply to Hon. Sylvester Tetteh’s accusations.

According to reports, Asamoah Gyan is considering running for the Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfro parliamentary seat. Rumors circulated in 2020 that he was getting ready to run for the position on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), a group he finances.

In 2022, Asamoah Gyan Asamoah Gyan, in an interview with Kumasi-based SOMPA FM, gave the strongest indication yet that he could contest the seat.

“For me, it’s a positive thing we are hearing. When people choose you that’s the most important thing. I and my team have not thought about venturing into politics. But you might not know.

It is a positive thing that we’ve heard. There are many other places that have written to me to become a Member of Parliament. I’m not ready now because it’s a full-time thing and what I want to say is that I’m thankful they have confidence in me that I can lead them.”

“I’m neutral, I don’t align with any political party. I’ve been the Captain of Black Stars and so I can’t align with any political party because you don’t know the party that will come to power. I’m tagged as an NPP because NPP comes from my family. Busia brought my father from Wenchi to Accra so people tag me as NPP. I’m neutral and I’ll be open to any form of appointment from any political party.” He revealed.

In the NPP flagbearership race, Alan Kyeremanten and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia are typically seen as the front-runners.

U-23 AFCON: There was no sense of urgency in them right from Morocco game – Asamoah Gyan

Retired and former Asamoah Gyan, captain of the Black Stars, has expressed his displeasure towards the Black Meteors team for their performance at the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Gyan stated that the players lacked a sense of urgency throughout the tournament, and this was evident from the second group game onwards.

In that game, Ghana suffered a 1-5 defeat against Morocco, following a victory against Congo in their tournament opener.

Despite scoring first in their last game against Guinea, Ghana only managed a 1-1 draw and subsequently exited the competition.

Gyan promptly shared his disappointment in a social media post and further elaborated on his thoughts in an interview with Asempa FM.

He emphasized the lack of urgency displayed by the players and voiced his concerns about their overall performance at the tournament.

What I saw in this Black meteors team is some players think they are bigger than the whole team. Small hype and fame ? SHM. Modern football is not about only what you do with the ball. It’s about what you do without the ball. I see players thinking the can play alone. It’s about…

    — ASAMOAH GYAN (@ASAMOAH_GYAN3) June 30, 2023
“Everyone understood what I tweeted [after the game]. I didn’t watch the full first two games but when you look at the things that happened against Morocco, you could see them break on the counterattack and you will see just a few defenders [of the Black Meteors] while the others are left behind jogging,” he said.

“It was as if they didn’t have any sense of urgency. That is where I realised [there were issues].

“When I watched the game [vs Guinea], you could see individuals even struggle to put together 2-3 passes and when we lose the ball, we are not aggressive enough to win it back.

“We have the players but how to approach the game is what we lack.

“How do we expect to win a game like this?” he quizzed.

Gyan, who recently announced his decision to retire from professional football, also refused to mention the names of the players he was talking about in his tweet.

“I won’t mention any names but we all watched the game and you could see. I have no personal issues with anyone,” he noted.

    “They know themselves.”

The Black Meteors’ exit from the U-23 AFCON also means they miss out on a place at next year’s Olympic Games to be staged in Paris.

He emphasized the importance of being team players and explained that their ability to contribute to the team’s efforts when not in possession of the ball is vital for success.

Gyan believes that football is not solely about individual talent but requires collective teamwork.

Expressing his disappointment, Gyan acknowledged the potential of the Ghana Black Meteors to progress further in the tournament.

However, he attributed their early elimination to the presence of pride and selfishness among certain players.

These character traits, according to the iconic Ghanaian skipper, are detrimental to modern football and hinder the team’s overall performance.

Gyan urged the players to change their mindset and embrace a more selfless approach to the game.

He stressed the significance of not only showcasing individual skills but also actively defending and supporting the team when not in possession of the ball.

I will name my next child after Asamoah Gyan- Dr Likee

Asamoah Gyan, the esteemed footballer, is set to welcome a new addition to his prestigious family. However, this child will not be biologically related to him. Instead, the child has been dedicated to Asamoah Gyan by actor Dr. Likee.

Reciprocating kindness showered on him since his emergence into the film industry, Dr Likee said it is only prudent he names his child after Gyan.

According to him, Gyan has played the daunting role of his godfather and offered him both financial and moral support.

“Asamoah Gyan is one of the few people who believed in my talent. Even when I was a nobody, he posted my skits and it went viral and that’s why I am here now. So for Asamoah Gyan, I owe him a lot. I will not be able to pay him back, so the child I will be welcoming next week will be named after him,” Dr Likee said, drawing cheers from his set mates.

On why he has reached that decision, Dr Likee said he wants his child to emulate the good attributes of Gyan which includes his love for his country.

Aside the benevolent factor, he further mentioned Asamoah Gyan’s supportive nature and team sprit as one of the reasons he would want his child to be raised in the identity of the legendary footballer.

This, in Dr Likee’s view is a testament of Gyan’s unwavering support for him and his entire team.

As a matter of fact, Asamoah Gyan purchased the camera which has shot all of Dr Likee’s hilarious films and skits.

The 37-year-old former Sunderland arrow head said he has been disrespected on several occasions despite his dedication to mother Ghana.

“There was a lot of disrespect. Sometimes I go on social media and a lot of disrespect and I feel like I am one of those guys who put Ghana on the map.

“The masses can also confirm. But seeing what went on in Parliament, I’m now beginning to understand and feel appreciated,” Gyan said.

    Celebrating more heroes

Annor-Dompreh added that there is the need to celebrate heroes like Gyan who have contributed to Ghana’s feats.

He said: “I feel we can do better, whatever we do to him or for him will set the tone and going into the future, what we should do to our heroes as a nation.

And as the saying goes, ‘a nation that doesn’t celebrate its heroes is not worth dying for.’ I am particularly elated that we set the tone and we got almost the entire house agreeing to what I suggested.”

“If you go to England, the way they celebrate David Beckham, you will be amazed. So, I think not just the personality of Asamoah Gyan but our traits and the tendency for us to also celebrate people who have sacrificed for our country.”

The 37-year-old striker played at three World Cups and seven Africa Cup of Nations (Afcons), captaining the Black Stars on many occasions, but somehow always ended up as the nearly man.

BBC Sport Africa looks at some of the numbers and events that defined his career on and off the pitch.

    1. Ghana’s number one for goals

Gyan is Ghana’s all-time leading goalscorer, netting 51 times in 109 games. Only Andre Ayew has played more times for the Black Stars.

His international debut in a World Cup qualifier against Somalia in November 2003 was a sign of things to come as he scored five minutes after coming on as a 77th-minute substitute. Three days shy of his 18th birthday, that strike made him Ghana’s youngest ever scorer.

Former international team-mate John Paintsil can still recall his first encounter with a young Gyan when both were playing for Ghanaian side Liberty Professionals.

“One day, the youth side was beating the seniors. There was this striker who was so fast on the ball, very skilful, dribbled left and right, very good in the air and battling with our defenders.

“I went for the tackle, Gyan does some skills, he twists me and I find the ball back of the net again. I said ‘Wow, I believe this boy will become one of the best strikers Ghana’s ever produced’. It came to pass.”

Gyan also scored eight Afcon goals for his country, losing two finals in 2010 and 2015. His record of 31 appearances spread across seven tournaments leaves him joint-second on the all-time list, again behind compatriot Ayew (34), while Egypt’s Ahmed Hassan is the only person to have played at eight Afcons.

Painstil told BBC Sport Africa, “Gyan is one of the best strikers that Africa and Ghana has produced.”

    2. World Cup success…and that penalty

Gyan is also Africa’s all-time leading scorer at World Cups, with six goals spread across three tournaments (2006, 2010 and 2014).

Having helped his nation qualify for a maiden World Cup, he scored just 68 seconds into Ghana second group game against the Czech Republic at the 2006 tournament in Germany. The Black Stars went on to make the second round before losing to Brazil.

But the 2010 BBC African Footballer of the Year is perhaps best known for a sliding doors moment at the following World Cup in South Africa, the first held on African soil.

Having scored two penalties to help Ghana narrowly qualify from a group containing Germany, Australia and Serbia, he then struck a 93rd-minute winner in the last 16 against the USA, setting up a quarter-final against Uruguay.

What happened next has become part of World Cup folklore.

With the game tied at 1-1 heading into the final minute of extra-time, Uruguay striker Luis Suarez was sent off for handling the ball on the goalline, clearly denying Ghana a winning goal.

But with the world watching on, this time Gyan couldn’t convert, seeing his penalty clip the bar and go over.

Asamoah Gyan covers his face and cries as team-mates try to console him
Gyan spent the night crying in his hotel room after missing the penalty against Uruguay, according to team-mate John Paintsil

He showed courage to step up and score from the spot just minutes later, but Ghana lost the shootout 4-2.

“We all had to go to Gyan’s [hotel] room,” Paintsil revealed.

“We did all we could but he was crying throughout the night. I will tell you, Gyan still feels that pain.”

The forward recovered to captain his country at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, scoring two more goals against Portugal and Germany, but there was no fairytale redemption story as the Black Stars finished bottom of their group.

Asamoah Gyan spreads his arms to celebrate scoring for Ghana
Gyan wore the number three shirt after a suggestion from his brother, fellow Ghana international Baffour Gyan

    3. Three is the magic number

Gyan baffled World Cup commentators by wearing the number three shirt.

That choice, which he carried throughout his career, was inspired by his brother and his Christian faith.

Baffour Gyan played 25 times for the national team and, like his younger sibling, was a striker. When Asamoah became part of the Ghana set-up, Baffour suggested the number because it represented the Holy Trinity – the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

“It is like DNA. Both brothers were very energetic and fighters,” said Paintsil, who describes the number three as Gyan’s “symbol”.

“The number three leaves with him everywhere he goes.”

    4. Hair-raising controversy

Indeed, Gyan certainly carried the number with him once he had it shaved and dyed into the side of his head, a style he adopted after his 2010 World Cup heartbreak.

Having sported various different looks over the years, his mohawk landed him in hot water in 2016 after a loan move to Al Ahli in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), one of more than 40 players sent a warning letter about “unethical hair”.

Gyan agreed to trim his locks to avoid causing offence, but brought the mohawk back for the 2017 Afcon. The number three on the side of his head also made a reappearance in Gabon but Ghana still lost the third-place play-off 1-0 to Burkina Faso.

    5. Baby Jet scores a hit

What some football fans across the world might not know is that Gyan also had a successful music career.

Using the stage name Baby Jet, he recorded three albums with hiplife musician Castro (hiplife being a famous musical style synonymous with Ghana).

The single African Girls was released in August 2010 and won the best hiplife single of the year at the Ghana Music Awards, although Paintsil has his own favourite, Do the Dance.

“It was one of the songs that travelled all over the world, not only Africa, not only Ghana.

“A lot of Ghanaians danced to it, sometimes the dressing room would dance to it.”

Gyan and Castro, a fellow Ghanaian, met in Italy in 2005 when Gyan was spotted in the crowd at a show and invited on stage. They became friends before Castro disappeared while jet skiing on holiday. Gyan was even forced to deny being involved in his friend’s ritual sacrifice.

Paintsil believes Baby Jet’s music “impacted a lot of people’s lives” and even more success could have followed.

“It’s great to see one person having so much talent. I believe that even if you give him movie scripts, Baby Jet can perform very well. He’s blessed.

“These things come to people who have a good, clean heart and he’s one of them.”

    Asamoah Gyan
Asamoah Gyan celebrates after scoring a late equaliser for Sunderland against Newcastle

    6. Sunderland cult hero

Gyan played for 11 clubs in eight countries during his career, with spells in Italy, France, Turkey, China and India.

Perhaps his most high-profile move came in August 2010 when he joined Premier League Sunderland after his exploits at the World Cup in South Africa.

Then aged 24, he arrived on Wearside for what was then a club record $20 million, scoring on his Premier League debut as a sub before then also finding the net on his full debut.

His outgoing personality, part-time career as a rap superstar and celebration dance moves won over fans but his cult status was secured when he scored a 94th-minute equaliser against rivals Newcastle United.

He scored 11 goals in 37 appearances for the Black Cats with many supporters disappointed that he only spent one season at the Stadium of Light before heading to the UAE on a loan move that “baffled” then manager Steve Bruce.

Paintsil understands why his former national team skipper inspires adoration, both abroad and at home in Ghana.

“Gyan is a great character. He has a sense of humour. We had so much fun.

“He is very unique and nobody can predict him. He’s always happy.

“He is doing so much for the nation and people. He has given hope and also freedom to the youngsters. I’m so proud of him.”

Baby Jet might now be too old to play football but he has certainly led a hip life up to this point.

Asamoah Gyan reacts to Thomas Partey’s links to Saudi Arabia

Former captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, has responded to reports of a $200 million offer made by a Saudi Arabian club to tempt Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey.

Gyan took to Twitter and posted a zipped mouth emoji in reaction to a tweet discussing whether Partey, given his age, should accept or reject the offer and focus on staying in Europe.

Drawing from his own career experience, Gyan made a surprising move from Sunderland to the United Arab Emirates after only one season in England.

Speaking to FourFourTwo, he explained that UEA club Al Ain made him an offer ‘he could not resist’.

“I was enjoying my football, but Al Ain offered me wages that instantly made me the best-paid footballer in Africa. I couldn’t resist,” he said.

According to the Saudi offer for Partey, he would receive an annual salary of $100 million, tax free in a two-year deal.

“Arsenal star Thomas Partey has been offered $200 million in wages by a club in Saudi Arabia. Partey will earn an annual, tax-free salary of $100 million if he signs the two-year deal.

The Saudi clubs keen on Partey are Al Ahli, Al Nassr, and Al Khaleej,” former Ghana Football Association spokesperson Saanie Daara reported in a tweet.

Meanwhile, Thomas Partey, 30, has attracted interest from Italian side Juventus, which offered him a three-year contract.

Thomas Partey, who joined Arsenal in the summer of 2020, has two years left on his current contract.

Asamoah Gyan should be a subject of study in schools – MP proposes

Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri constituency, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has put forward a proposal to include former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan as a subject of study in schools, aiming to inspire the younger generation.

Annoh-Dompreh’s suggestion arises following the outpouring of tributes for the Ghanaian football icon, who recently announced his retirement.

While acknowledging the abundant praise and recognition received by Gyan from football federations, fans, and stakeholders, Annoh-Dompreh believes that mere commendations are inadequate.

He argues that making Gyan a focal point of educational studies would not only pay homage to him but also serve as an inspiration to young people.

“A man with such great ability and talents both on and off the pitch deserves more, I strongly believe this personality and vision should be studied in schools to inspire the next generation,” he said on the floor of parliament.

“Again, a monument should be erected in his name to show our appreciation for the diverse contribution he has made to Ghana and the world at large.

“He is an iconic figure whose brand should be promoted to inspire other rich and endowed footballers to act likewise in the manner in which he contributed to the socio-economic development of our country.

“Speaker, he may [have] missed the golden opportunity of not qualifying Ghana to the semi-final in the 2010 World Cup.

“Nonetheless, he never missed the opportunity for restoring joy into the heart of Ghanaians with music, dance, and economic opportunities that he has offered the youth.”

Gyan, who also holds the record for being Africa’s top scorer in the World Cup with six goals, has hinted at a potential return to the game through coaching and scouting, among others.

Atsu’s death: Now you know we go through a lot, time to respect our jobs – Asamoah Gyan to ‘some’ Ghanaians

Asamoah Gyan, a former captain of the Black Stars, thinks that Christian Atsu’s untimely departure will humanise football and help Ghanaians understand that, at the end of the day, athletes are just regular people.

According to Asamoah Gyan, people often forget that football players are regular people and hold them to a higher standard of moral behaviour due to the wealth and luxury that come with the profession.

In a Peace FM interview, the legendary footballers expressed their opinion that Atsu’s passing provides a chance for people to reconsider their opinions of footballers and stop giving them a bad rap.

After Atsu’s passing, according to Gyan, the criticism of football players should stop because Ghanaians now understand the sacrifice that players make.

“This is the time for some Ghanaians to respect our jobs. We’ve been criticised for all these years for taking the tax payer’s money, but they forget that every professional gets paid for what they do. They don’t know the risk we go through. People only see us on TV with our flashy lifestyle, but we put our lives on the line.

“This was someone people depended on; now he is gone. This is the time for people to respect us. The disrespect is too much. I’m sure people are now beginning to understand what we go through. Sometimes we play in war-torn countries. We deserve the pay we get. This is an example for everyone. I’m in pain, but it’s a natural disaster. We will do all we can to support the family,” he said.

Asamoah Gyan also paid tribute to Christian Atsu and hinted at plans to organize a farewell match for the former Newcastle star.

“I’m planning to organize a game to raise money for the family. I believe when that day comes, everyone including the stars will come on board to support us so that we can raise funds for the family of Christian Atsu,” he said.

Asamoah Gyan was a close pal of Atsu and has already visited the family to commiserate with them following the passing of their beloved.

He has been mourning the death of his friend since his body was recovered from his destroyed apartment on Saturday, February 18, 2023.

Shatta Wale, a Ghanaian dancehall musician, has explained why, despite their friendship, he has yet to record a song in Christian Atsu’s honour. Atsu was a winger for the Black Stars.

Shatta Wale claims that his ability to write and create a song to honour Christian Atsu’s memory was hampered by the loss of the musician.

He admitted that despite their friendship not being as close as it was with Asamoah Gyan, he was always proud of Christian Atsu’s perseverance in achieving success in life.

“I have heard people ask why I haven’t done a song for Christian Atsu as I have done in the past. I know I have done songs to honour some personalities in the past, including the late Major Mahama.”

“I haven’t been able to do it for Atsu because his death has hit me so hard and it has affected my ability to write a song for him,” Shatta Wale said.

He also criticised the media for waiting for Christian Atsu to die before publicising his good deeds and the charity work he was doing while he was alive.

“God will punish you media people for waiting for him to die before making Ghanaians aware of the good deeds that he was doing. All the charity work he did, you couldn’t talk about it but now you are doing it because he is dead,” Shatta Wale ended.

My father and I used to sell bags of corn at Kaneshie – Asamoah Gyan

Asamoah Gyan, a former Ghanaian international, recently shared another heartwarming tale about his humble beginnings selling maize with his father at Kaneshie market when he was a small boy.

Gyan, who went to Seven Great Princess Academy, one of the top schools in Accra, doesn’t enjoy calling his parents impoverished, but he acknowledges that there were difficult moments.

“When you talk about poor people, they are those in the village but my parents were able to cater for me. My mother was a headmistress and my father was a businessman, he sold maize at the Kaneshie market,” the ex-Black Stars player said.

According to Gyan although he went to the same school as Shatta Wale, the dancehall musician went to the elite branch in Dansoman while he schooled in Laterbiokoshie.

“I was with Charles Mensah [Shatta Wale] at Seven Great and they opened a new one, the one at Dansoman, so that was where Shatta went. The rich people went there,” the former Liberty Professionals player said.

When asked if he grew up as a rich kid, Gyan told TV3, “Nah, my parents did well to cater for my education, we were not that rich. I won’t be a hypocrite to motivate people that we were poor and they try to motivate people.”

Reminiscing on his days as a student, Gyan disclosed that he often went to the market after school to help his father whose business was selling bags of maize.

“From school, I used to go sit down at the Kaneshie market and sell. Now sometimes when I’m around that place driving when I get down people will think Asamoah Gyan came from the sky but they didn’t know I was there selling maize.

“I didn’t sell the maize but my dad goes to Nkoranza and they bring them in a sack to sell to the Kenkey sellers,” he said.

Gyan added “sometimes we don’t use the Kaneshie footbridge, we jump the fence to pick a car to Mallam but people don’t believe it.”

Black Stars don’t need a ‘boot licking’ coach – Ex-captain Asamoah Gyan

Former Ghana captain, Asamoah Gyan, says the next Black Stars coach must stand firm and make his own decision.

The Ghana Football Association [GFA] are expected to name a new head coach for the national team this month.

Otto Addo, who was the head coach left his role after Ghana’s early at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Chris Hughton and Kwasi Appiah among other coaches have been linked to the vacant job.

However, Gyan, who is the country’s all-time leading goalscorer says the national team need a coach whose work cannot be influenced.

“We need an experienced coach, someone with strong credentials…Even if he is an inexperienced coach we should be able to identify what the coach has taught the players in terms of their style of play,” he told Dan Kwaku Yeboah on YouTube.

“You can take an inexperienced coach but make sure he understands the game, someone who will make the people understand his philosophy.

“Someone who can take charge, not someone who takes orders, you have to be strict and take charge of what you are doing,” Gyan, who played at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cups added.

The Black Stars are expected to regroup in March for the doubleheader against Angoal in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifiers.

Following Otto Addo’s resignation from his position following the Black Stars’ early withdrawal from the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup, the Ghana FA is looking for a new head coach.

James Kwasi Appiah, who wants to lead the club for a third time, and Chris Hughton are two coaches who are considering applying for the open position.

Asamoah Gyan reveals lowest moment in his career

Ex-Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has opened up about his lowest moment in his career as a footballer.

According to him, his open goal miss against Namibia in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] was the lowest moment in his career.

Gyan is the country’s all-time top goal scorer with 51 goals after making 109 appearances for the country.

Black Stars were playing their second group game as hosts of the tournament 15 years ago, after a late win over Guinea in their opening game.

In the game against Namibia, the late Junior Agogo scored the only goal to give Ghana all three points.

The Namibia goalkeeper was unable to hold onto the ball, leaving the then 22-year-old Gyan, who was gunning for his second goal of the competition, with everything but an empty net in front of him, but the striker shot it wide.

The next  day, Gyan with his brother Baffuor threatened to leave camp due to the ‘harsh’ criticisms the former suffered from Ghanaians

“Statistically we were ahead. Ghanaians thought we were going to beat them [Namibia] like 20-0. And it was one of those days. I wasn’t lucky. I think I was one of the best players on the field but I wasn’t lucky,” the former Black Stars captain told TV3.

“One opportunity that I got at an acute angle. The goalkeeper fumbled and the ball dropped. The keeper was out and I just hit the ball wide.

“And the following day…eii! That was the first time I experienced criticism. So there were just insulting. It was really bad.”

The former Sunderland and Liberty Professionals striker, however, confessed that it was a defining event in his career as it made him unassailable.

“It made me a strong guy. All my life, I was pampered and that was how I developed that tough skin.”

Gyan is currently clubless having parted ways with Legon Cities two years ago.

Asamoah Gyan: I miss Castro every day

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has disclosed that he misses his friend Castro, who went missing nine years ago, every day.

Gyan and Castro, who was born Theophilus Tagoe, were very good friends and even recorded many songs together.

However, the singer went missing in July 2014 with one Janet Bandu while on holiday at the Ada Estuary with Gyan, his brother Baffour, and others.

This was after Castro and Miss Janet Bandu drowned in an accident after going on a Jet Ski ride at the Ada Estuary.

    Castro and Asamoah Gyan

Castro is yet to be found since drowning and Gyan has revealed that he misses his friend every day, although he tries to hide the emotions.

“I met Castro in Italy. He came there with KK Fosu for a show in Udine and while performing, he spotted me in the crowd and invited me on the stage to dance,” the veteran striker told Dan Kwaku Yeboah in a YouTube interview, as quoted by Ghanasoccernet.

“So it was at that time that we clicked and this was in 2005. After the show, I took their numbers and when they arrived in Ghana, Castro called me to inform me they are back in the country.”

He added: “I asked him to perform some freestyle, so as he was performing, I was harmonising, and at that moment he knew I had some musical talent. We went to the studio and made the hit record African Girls.

“I miss him every day but I just don’t show the emotions. I always feel his presence around me.”

In Gyan’s autobiography, Legyandary, he narrated the lengths he had to go, including visiting a shrine, in his search for Castro when the musician went missing.

“As we contemplated our next line of action, a man from the town showed up. He claimed there was an oracle in Ada which could help us find the missing persons,” Gyan wrote in his book.

“He added that the oracle was very powerful and such matters can be easily handled by it. Though I wasn’t very superstitious, I felt obliged to go along since we were in a fix.”

He further explained: “What else could we do? I was a little scared of the ensuing encounter with a priest so I declined to join them to the shrine. I had a little money on me so I decided to return to the hotel and gather some money in case we had to make any payments later on.

“I was in a dilemma, lost in thought and wondering if perhaps this oracle could help. One returned with news that the consultation would cost Ghc 100 and a bottle of schnapps. I wondered silently if the schnapps was for the gods or for the priest.”

The former Sunderland star said he was initially reluctant to join the rest to the shrine, but was quick to add that Castro was worth making such a sacrifice even if he didn’t believe in voodoo.

He also added that a lot of players engage in juju but that is their secret.

“Yes, it is there, anything that has a name exists. We all like in colts we all go together and they tell us to get this and bath with it do this and that. And if you don’t do it and the team loses you caused the defeat. With Cedar we went once or twice we played Liberty we were beaten four,” he said on Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV.

“I remember another colts game, a man told us to do something for two goals. Sometimes with a padlock, they will tell you if you score one that is it.”

“You can get an empty net and shoot wide when the one goal enters that is it. When someone scores a goal people usually say this is a mallam goal they know it (juju) is there,”

“We all have what we believe. Someone will close from church and pass by a mallam. There are a lot of players if they will tell the truth they do those things.”

“Someone will not tell you their secret but if you are very observant you will see that something is going on. That person will not tell you there is something going on but if you are observant there are certain things you will see,”

“You can’t mention names, someone’s secret, nothing goes on in the dressing room but if the person is going to sleep do you know what they do.”

“If a pastor stands behind the pulpit you don’t know what he has done before coming so your secret is your power. There are those who are very deep into juju but will come and behave like they are holy,” he concluded.

  • Why did Kwasi Appiah apologize to me if taking captaincy was right – Asamoah Gyan

Why did Kwasi Appiah apologize to me if taking captaincy was right – Asamoah Gyan

Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan says that why did former Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah apologize to him if the decision to strip him of the captaincy was right.

On the eve of the African Cup of Nations in Egypt in 2019, the coach of the Black Stars Kwasi Appiah decided to strip Asamoah Gyan off the captain’s armband.

Instead, coach Kwasi Appiah handed the captain’s armband to Gyan’s deputy Andre Ayew creating a storm even before the tournament began.

The former Sunderland player believes former Black Stars gaffer Kwasi Appiah had the time wrong and habours regrets about that decision but adds that the reasons given him were not coherent.

“Of course, I didn’t agree but if you think you’ve taken the decision why do you call me to apologise? My team met his team at Holiday Inn,” Gyan told Dan Kwaku Yeboah on YouTube.

“They spoke to me and apologised and told me not to be angry. Why do you have to apologise if it’s your decision? If it’s the right decision, why do you call my team and sit down to talk about it? Why? If it’s because of the relationship we had then I understand.”

He added: “He gave me the captain. He flew to Dubai but when he wanted to take the armband back, it wasn’t the right time. He had to give me a tangible reason. Somebody was the captain before me and I don’t have a problem with coach but I felt the timing was wrong. And also the explanation for the reason why he did that wasn’t coherent. That was why I got angry.”

“I told home I was angry and suggested that he leaves me out of the squad so that he could work with a sound mind. He told me I should rethink it because I’m in his plans.”

Asamoah Gyan retired abruptly after the incident and it had to take Presidential persuasion from the head of state Nana Addo for him to rescind his decision in a tournament he was on the periphery.

Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals has not called time on his storied career but has been unattached for close to two years now.
