Bawku mediation: Otumfuo’s report misrepresents talks – Mamprugu Overlord

The Overlord of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, the Nayiri, Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, has described a chieftaincy mediation report presented by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, as a “procedurally flawed” and “unilaterally imposed” document.

According to a statement dated Wednesday, December 17, and issued by the Mamprugu Traditional Council, the content of the document is contrary to the discussions held during the mediation.

The statement further contended that such actions by Otumfuo contradict the fundamental purpose of mediation. It added that, “I must state clearly and without reservation that the so-called report and recommendations do not reflect my engagements with Otumfuo, nor those of my duly constituted mediation team.”

“To say that I feel betrayed, disappointed, and deeply hurt would be a grave understatement,” he wrote, alleging that the report was “replete with factual inaccuracies” and displayed a “manifest imbalance” favouring one side’s narrative while omitting Mamprugu’s case.

In April this year, President John Mahama tasked the Asantehene to resume mediation of the Bawku conflict, with sessions scheduled for April 28 to May 1, 2025. On Wednesday, December 17, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, presented the findings and recommendations following his mediation talks with representatives of the Mamprugu and Kusasi.

Otumfuo’s findings recognised Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka as the legally rightful chief of Bawku and, therefore, the Paramount Chief of the Kusasi Traditional Area. The presentation ceremony, held at the Jubilee House in Accra yesterday, was attended by the Vice-President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang; the President of the National House of Chiefs, Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II; the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak; senior government officials; and members of the National Peace Council, among other dignitaries.

The Asantehene, in a 45-minute presentation, stated that “I’m here not to give a judgement of who was wrong and who was right. I’m here to present the facts as they are, so that we can have peace.”

The mediation talks began months ago and were spearheaded by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. During the last gathering, he urged the factions involved in the Bawku chieftaincy dispute to cease power struggles and work towards lasting peace.

He made the call on Monday, December 1, at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi while speaking to representatives of the Mamprugu and Kusasi.

“Whatever the outcome of the mediation, you will still have to live together as brothers and sisters,” he added.

Otumfuo’s engagement with the groups was aimed at finding lasting solutions to end the ongoing feud, which resurfaced in 2024 in Bawku in the Upper East Region.

Bawku, which had remained relatively peaceful for a period, witnessed renewed conflict in late 2024. The resurgence of violence was largely sparked by the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a Mamprusi chief who had been enskinned in 2022 but was later exiled when his enskinment was ruled illegal.

His return to Bawku followed the withdrawal of an arrest warrant against him by a Kumasi High Court in October 2024, reigniting tensions between the Kusasi and Mamprusi communities. The renewed violence has resulted in deadly confrontations, including attacks on both civilians and security forces.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s involvement in the peace process has been met with widespread approval, with many hopeful that his leadership will play a critical role in restoring peace and stability to the troubled Bawku area.

Colonel Festus Aboagye (Retired), a security expert, has called for greater support for Otumfuo’s initiative, stressing the importance of embracing multi-track diplomacy to strengthen the peace process.

Colonel Aboagye urged a more inclusive approach to the mediation, calling for the involvement of national stakeholders such as diaspora leaders, youth advocates, and women’s peacebuilding networks.

He believes a broader, multi-dimensional strategy will result in a more sustainable and inclusive solution to the conflict.

“Support Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s mediation through multi-track diplomacy, incorporating diaspora leaders, youth influencers, and women’s peacebuilding networks,” he proposed.

He also cautioned that traditional diplomatic efforts alone may not be sufficient to resolve the deep divisions fuelling the protracted conflict.

Meanwhile, the community of Binduri in the Upper East Region, along with surrounding districts, has recorded a series of murders in recent times, leaving residents in fear and panic.

The victims were killed by unknown armed men, prompting the police to launch investigations to arrest the perpetrators. In a recent update, the Ghana Police Service offered a one-million Ghana cedi reward for information leading to the arrest of Mark Agingre, a native of Binduri, who has been labelled the prime suspect in the ongoing killings.

This announcement followed the murder of a man, his wife, and their three children in Binduri, which left another child in critical condition. The surviving child is currently receiving treatment at the Bolgatanga Government Hospital.

Earlier, on October 27, an elderly man and his two children were also killed by unknown assailants. Preliminary police investigations have linked the incidents to Mark Agingre.

The police have urged individuals with information on his whereabouts to contact 191, 18555, or report to the nearest police station.

Authorities have assured the public that the prime suspect and all others involved in the gruesome murders will be brought to justice.

Taking to Facebook on Saturday, November 8, the police wrote, “Suspect Mark Agingre, a native of Binduri, is wanted by the Police for his involvement in a series of brutal murders in the Binduri District and nearby communities in the Upper East Region. Suspect Agingre is wanted in connection with the murder of a man, his wife, and three children on 7th November 2025, which also left another child in critical condition at the Bolgatanga Government Hospital.”

It added, “He is further suspected of the murder of an elderly man and his two children on 27th October 2025 at Binduri. Preliminary investigations indicate that he may be behind several other targeted killings.

“A reward of One Million Ghana Cedis GH₵1,000,000.00 has been earmarked for anyone who is able to share relevant and credible information that will lead to the arrest of the suspect.”

The post concluded, “Anyone with credible information on his whereabouts is urged to contact the nearest police station or call 191, 18555 immediately. The Police assure the public that every effort is being made to track down the suspect and bring him to justice.”

On Sunday, October 26, a shooting incident left three individuals dead and five others injured. Reports indicate that gunmen invaded the victims’ residence and shot them, including a five-year-old child who died instantly.

George Bukari, Manager of Binduri-based Maxx Empire Radio and TV, is reported to have sustained injuries. The incident has been linked to the long-running Bawku conflict, where ethnic tensions have periodically sparked violence, making the area one of the most heavily monitored in northern Ghana.

The government has, in several ways, sought to restore calm. In July, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) deployed soldiers to conflict-prone areas, including Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla.

Four other individuals were killed in a daylight attack at the Garu District Office of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), which also left several others injured, on Monday, October 20. The deceased included a bystander, an NHIA staff member, a mentally unstable man, and Yahaya Bukari, headmaster of Garu D/A Junior High School.

Eyewitnesses reported that four armed men on two motorbikes fired shots indiscriminately upon arriving at the office.

“Around 10 a.m., we heard gunshots. Initially, we thought it was coming from the rural bank area, but later we found out that the attackers had gone to the health insurance office,” a witness stated.

Edward Ndebugri, former Presiding Member of the Garu District Assembly and current Assembly Member for Kugri, recounted that the gunmen targeted bystanders and fleeing residents.

“There is a public school close to the health insurance office, and when the shooting started, the teachers and pupils began running helter-skelter. The gunmen chased them, and when one of the teachers fell, they shot him dead,” he added.

The assailants reportedly left the NHIA office with nothing. In response, heavily armed police and military personnel patrolled key areas, including the District Health Insurance Office and the Presbyterian Hospital.

“The whole town is in shock. This is the first time we are witnessing such an incident. People are living in fear, and we are pleading with the security agencies to investigate and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the Assembly Member for Kugri appealed.

In April, the Ghana Police Service directed all regional commands to implement immediate protective measures for police officers and their families in the Upper East Region, particularly in Bawku, Pusiga, and Sindi.

The directive followed intelligence suggesting that unknown operatives, potentially linked to names such as “King Doormathin” and “Nectwart Ermonnel,” may be targeting police officers and their relatives.

“Recent developments suggest that police officers and their families, whether indigenous or non-indigenous, have become potential targets,” the internal message stated.

Asantehene to give verdict on Bawku conflic today after months of mediation

Overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, is set to give his judgment following months of mediation process of the long-standing Bawku conflict.

As part of the mediation process, Otumfuo heard arguments, reviewed history, and consulted stakeholders; he will give a definitive judgment today, Monday, December 1, at the Manhyia Palace.

Manhyia, on November 10, announced the verdict date in a statement. Ahead of a two-day mediation, work which formed a key part of his continuing work to bring the Kusasi and Mamprusi groups in Bawku together and resolve their long-running conflict.

In April this year, President John Mahama tasked the Asantehene to resume mediation of the Bawku conflict with sessions scheduled for April 28 – May 1, 2025.

Manhyia confirmed the resumption in a statement on April 15. The Asantehene began by meeting both representatives from both factions between April 28 and 30 to reopen dialogue and set the stage for meaningful engagement.

However, the sessions were postponed due to the complexity of the dispute in the locality. However, the mediation continued on May 13, where the Asantehene mentioned that the period had caused some relative peace in the area.  In June, the Asantehene was expected to meet with the Kusaug as part of ongoing efforts to restore peace in Bawku.

After June 2025, the mediation process did not immediately conclude. Instead, it entered a slower phase with calls for more government support, and eventually, the Asantehene set a final mediation date for late November and early December 2025.

Asantehene to bring Bawku mediation to a close by Dec 1

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to conclude his mediation efforts in the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy conflict on Sunday, November 30, and Monday, December 1.

This information was contained in a statement issued by the Manhyia Palace on Monday, November 10. According to the statement, the Asantehene’s upcoming two-day mediation is a key part of his continuing work to bring the Kusasi and Mamprusi groups in Bawku together and resolve their long-running conflict.

On April 15, Otumfuo formally announced that the critical mediation sessions would take place from April 28 to May 1 at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.

  • I’ll destool any chief who promotes violence over land – Asantehene warns

I’ll destool any chief who promotes violence over land – Asantehene warns

Chiefs within the enclave of the Ashanti Kingdom will have their titles stripped off if they employ the services of individuals who use threats or violence to protect lands under their care, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has warned.

The Asantehene gave the stern warning on Wednesday, November 5, at the Manhyia Palace when the newly appointed Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto, visited the palace. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II fumed at the actions of these land guards, adding that such conduct was against the traditional governance system of Asanteman.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II further called on individuals or chiefs involved in land disputes to seek amicable resolution through proper channels rather than resorting to violence or unauthorised security arrangements.

“I will destool any chief who engages the services of land guards. They know very well that they have no such authority. When those lands were entrusted to them upon their enstoolment, I never instructed them to hire land guards to protect them. I did not grant them the power to employ people to use guns and harm others.

“If you have any land disputes with anyone, bring it before me, and we will resolve it amicably, for peace to prevail,” the Asantehene said.

In July, the Asantehene issued a similar warning, declaring his readiness to destool any chief found harbouring or condoning the illegal activities of land guards within their jurisdictions. The Asantehene’s declaration came during the first Asanteman Council meeting following the culmination of the Silver Jubilee celebrations at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Thursday, July 4, 2024.

Addressing the gathering, Otumfuo highlighted the alarming emergence of land guards in Asanteman, a phenomenon previously uncommon in the region. “A practice that didn’t have any place in Asanteman has started gaining roots — land guards,” Otumfuo remarked, expressing deep concern over the growing presence of these illegal operatives involved in land disputes. He disclosed that a committee comprising security agencies had been established to investigate and root out this unlawful practice.

The Asantehene minced no words in his threat, stating, “The police and the military will inform me about the locations where these practices are occurring. Any chief implicated in the report will face destoolment. Let us await the findings of the committee.”

Emphasizing the sanctity of land and the traditional methods for resolving disputes, Otumfuo questioned the necessity of resorting to land guards. “Lands do not move and cannot be taken anywhere. When I allocated land to you, I did not authorize the use of land guards,” he affirmed, underscoring the traditional principles guiding land ownership and dispute resolution in Asanteman.

In addition to addressing the menace of land guards, Otumfuo also touched on the issue of illegal mining within Asanteman, pointing out that some traditional leaders are complicit in these illicit activities. He pledged to investigate any chief implicated in reports of illegal mining and vowed swift destoolment for those found guilty.

The Asanteman Council, comprising traditional leaders and stakeholders, has expressed support for Otumfuo’s measures to safeguard the region against these emerging security threats. The Ashanti Regional Security Council has previously acknowledged the historical absence of land guards in the region due to the effective stewardship of stool lands vested in Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and his chiefs.

They reiterated the importance of utilizing accepted channels for resolving land disputes and called upon all parties involved to adhere to established protocols.

Ghana’s Land Act, 2020 (Act 1036), governs all categories of land—customary, public, and private—and aims to streamline land administration, reduce disputes, and enhance tenure security. The Act codifies various land interests, including allodial title, customary freehold, leasehold, and usufructuary rights, while also introducing reforms such as electronic conveyancing and protections for spousal property rights.

In 2024, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) advised individuals to follow legal procedures to settle their land issues. The ARCC emphasized that those who engage the services of land guards will face severe consequences.

In a statement, it wrote, “Any person found to engage the services of land guards will be apprehended, prosecuted, and arraigned before court.” The Council also warned that the land guards themselves would not be spared and would face the full force of the law.

The ARCC stressed the importance of using appropriate legal channels to address land disputes, noting that the activities of land guards often result in violence and pose a threat to law-abiding citizens.

“Based on this fact, the Ashanti Regional Security Council requests all citizens in the region to use the right procedures to address their land disputes rather than employ the use of land guards, whose activities always threaten law-abiding citizens and result in violence,” the statement read.

The Council urged the public to adhere strictly to this directive to ensure peace and stability in the region.

“It is the expectation of the Regional Security Council that the public will accept the above directives for strict compliance to ensure peace in the region,” the ARCC concluded.

The rule of law in some communities in the country has been sidelined when it comes to land disputes. Land guards are often contracted by individuals who do not believe in the legal system or who seek to capture lands belonging to others. These land guards frequently inflict pain on individuals and, in some cases, push them to their early graves. The Police Service is working assiduously to nip the activities of land guards in the bud.

‘I demonized social media until it projected my hard work to the world’ – Piesie Esther

Award-winning gospel musician Piesie Esther has revealed that she use to frown on social media usage until she experienced the positive impacts it had on her music career.

According to her, she held the view that these online platforms were set up to project unholy activities, which deterred her from leveraging them to project her brand.

“I knew that I was working but people were saying I’ve laid low. I was wondering why they were saying I was silent. I got to understand that it’s because I wasn’t active on social media.

“I used to say social media was for maame wata. Some of the things that were going on were beyond me so I was never interested in social media” she said.

Fortunately for her, she has transformed her mind to accept and understand the importance of social media in promoting her work and connecting with fans.

“I wasn’t posting anything, I wasn’t doing anything for people to see daily activities and for them to know I was actively recording music. When you hear of some things, you get to think about it thoroughly, and I’ve grown to understand it better,” she stated.

Regarding the power of social media for musicians, last year, Ghanaian musician Kofi Kinaata expressed his appreciation for the considerable advantages he gained following a mention by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Kinaata revealed that the Asantehene’s acknowledgment notably boosted his social media metrics and revenue.

In a social media post, he lauded Otumfuo for bringing attention to him, stating, “Since being mentioned, my numbers have soared—streams, views, and social media engagement. Opemso, medaase. Piaaww!”

The rapper enthusiastically celebrated this significant recognition on social media with frequent posts.

During the General Conference of the Ghana Bar Association, Kofi Kinaata was praised in a speech by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The Asantehene underscored the value of recognizing Ghana’s worth by referencing the phrase ‘Obi nya wayɛ’ from Kinaata’s popular song ‘Susuka.’

He pointed out that despite numerous challenges, many countries look up to Ghana, urging citizens to contemplate the wisdom in Kinaata’s lyrics.

On the other hand, Ghanaian musician Sherifa Gunu also described social media as both a powerful tool and a troubling force in the music industry, especially for female artists striving to maintain their dignity.

Speaking in an interview with Graphic Showbiz, Sherifa noted that while social media platforms such as TikTok have made it easier for artists to reach wider audiences, they have also created a culture where sensationalism often takes precedence over genuine talent.

“Social media is a blessing and a curse. Even if you’re the most talented artiste, you won’t get noticed unless you’re half-naked on TikTok. Sadly, talent alone isn’t enough anymore,” she lamented.

Sherifa expressed concern over the pressure on female musicians to share revealing content in order to attract attention online, stating that many feel forced to compromise their values just to remain relevant.

Despite the challenges, the award-winning singer reaffirmed her commitment to staying true to her craft, using her online presence to promote authenticity.

“I still use my page to remind fans that real music exists,” she said.

She also touched on the broader issue of recognition in the Ghanaian music scene, pointing out that the country tends to honour its legends only after they’ve passed or gained international acclaim. In contrast, she said, other nations celebrate their cultural icons while they are still alive.

Sherifa called for a shift in how Ghana values its veteran musicians, urging stakeholders to celebrate them now rather than wait until it is too late.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian rapper M.anifest shared a refreshing take on what it truly means to succeed, offering valuable advice for both creatives and professionals navigating today’s competitive world.

In an insightful conversation with Bola Ray on Starr Chat, monitored by MyNewsGh, M.anifest shared some key principles for success.

He urged individuals to look beyond the surface when traveling to global cities like London or Paris, saying, “When you’re in places like London or Paris, don’t just posture for the gram. Take the time to learn and build connections—it can transform your perspective and craft.”

With his extensive career and international acclaim, M.anifest’s words carry weight, reflecting the lessons he’s learned along the way. He highlighted the significance of collaboration and staying true to one’s authentic self as paths to growth.

He recounted a moment from his journey, stating, “It’s not always about seeking something. Sometimes, just sharing a meal or a conversation can open doors you never expected.”

Further, M.anifest spoke about the reciprocal nature of success, stressing the importance of both giving and receiving value in relationships. “Too many of us think only about taking, but the best relationships, whether in business or life, are about giving and receiving value. That’s how you grow and thrive,” he explained.

For M.anifest, success is not only about personal growth but collective progress, a principle that guides his ongoing efforts to uplift and support emerging talent in the music industry.

Asantehemaa’s passing is a huge loss – King Charles III

The reigning monarch of the United Kingdom (UK), King Charles III, has extended condolences to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, over the death of Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III. According to a letter dated August 14 and addressed from Buckingham Palace, King Charles noted that he was filled with sorrow after hearing the passing of the Asantehemaa.

King Charles described the late Queen Mother as one who served as a role model for good leadership and decision-making.“Her Royal Majesty demonstrated a deep devotion to preserving the traditions and unity of the Ashanti throughout her life, and served as an exemplar of wise, fair, and gracious judgment and counsel,” King Charles wrote.

The Queen Mother, who is also the sister of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei TuTu II, was laid to rest with a befitting burial on Thursday, September 18, at the Manhyia Palace in the Ashanti Region following three days of funeral rites.

President John Dramani Mahama, former Presidents John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Dr Bawumia, and Chief of Staff, Frema Opare, government officials, and other dignitaries were spotted at the funeral grounds paying their last respects to Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III.

Shops, schools, banks, markets, and offices in Kumasi were closed on Thursday for the final funeral rites of the Queen Mother. Residents also remained indoors on Thursday evening as the procession moved from Bantama to Breman.

Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom II passed away at age 98 as the 14th Queen of the Asante Kingdom. Her passing was announced on August 11 at an emergency sitting of the Asanteman Traditional Council, which was presided over by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

A one-week observation was held at the forecourt of the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi for the late Queen Mother on August 21. It followed a display of traditional Asante customs, with chiefs, queen mothers, and government officials.

The ceremony was nothing short of star-studded, as it saw the presence of dignitaries, including both current and past presidents and government officials. Former presidents John Agyekum and Akufo-Addo, and Vice President Professor Naana Jane, who was accompanied by the Chief Justice, Julius Debrah.

They paid respects to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and signed the Book of Condolence as a gesture of sharing in his sorrow. The funeral rites for the Queen Mother began on Monday, September 15, and continued through to Thursday, September 18.

Thursday was earmarked for the late queen’s “Dɔte Yie”, a day reserved for the most sacred rites. Traditional drumming, dirges, and musketry filled the air with various cultural displays. Fetish priests performed rituals to cleanse and protect the royal passage.

Tributes from Otumfuo himself, President Mahama, the late queen’s grandchildren, as well as one from her sister in-law, Lady Julia, wife of Asantehene.

A group of men, painted in red clay, signifying the pain of Asanteman, also came to display after the chief executioner was captured, tearing off the head of a live chicken in a cold-blooded sacrificial act, signifying that Asanteman is in mourning, and the ancestral spirits have been summoned to receive the soul of the departed Queen Mother.

Manhyia Palace in Kumasi received Ghanaian sympathisers following the passing of Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III. On Monday, September 15, religious groups, political parties, and corporate bodies paid their respects. The judiciary, security agencies, and financial institutions followed the next day.

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei TuTu II, received traditional leaders, ministers of state, diplomats, parliamentarians, and MMDCEs on Tuesday. On Wednesday, August 13, the Archbishop of Kumasi, Most Rev. Gabriel Justice Anokye, led a delegation to the Manhyia Palace to pray for the Asantehene and to express their condolences to the King, after the demise of the Asantehemaa.

They also visited the late Ohemaa’s court to formally convey their sympathies to the family and offer prayers as well. Asantehemaa was named Nana Ama Konadu at birth and is also known by all as Nana Panin or Naa Panin. She later became Nana Konadu Yiadom III, after her enstoolment as the 14th Asantehemaa on February 6, 2016, following the demise of her mother, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III was born in 1927 at Benyaade Shrine at Merdan, a small town located at Kwadaso, Kumasi, in the days of the restoration of the Asante Confederacy. She was born to Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, Asantehemaa, who reigned from 1977 to 2016. Her father was known as Opanin Kofi Fofie, known popularly as Koofie or Keewuo, a carpenter by profession from Besease near Atimatim in Kumasi.

At a very tender age, just when she was a little over a year old and being breastfed, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, Asantehemaa, was separated from her biological mother and given to her aunt (mother’s sister), Nana Afia Konadu, at Ashanti New Town (Ash-Town), a suburb of Kumasi.

Nanahemaa never had any formal education, but she underwent a rigorous and quality informal education, learning a lot of things that were not taught in the classroom.

She was initiated and underwent puberty rites together with her niece, Nana Abena Ansa, in their early teens. She married Opanin Kwame Boateng, a blacksmith by profession from Aduman in Kumasi.

She was religious, kindhearted, calm, fair and firm, hardworking, very humble, unassuming, and accommodating. In the mid-1990s, Kwaku Firi Bosomfo, the priest of Kwaku Firi, prophesied through Baffour Akoto, a Senior Linguist of Asantehene, that Nanahemaa would be Queen of Asante someday, and surely, it came to pass.

Nanahemaa achieved a lot and has been recognised as such. Through her constant generosity in doing God’s work, the Saviour Church named a school after her, Nana Konadu Saviour School. She exhibited a high level of equity, justice, and fairness, and all cases brought before her have been settled amicably to the satisfaction of both parties involved.

In celebrating her 5th Anniversary as Asantehemaa, she made a huge donation to the mothers at the Mother-Baby Unit (MBU), Pediatric Emergency Care Unit (PICU), and Pediatric Emergency Unit (PEU), and paid for all the medical bills and expenses for new mothers at the Mother-Baby Unit (MBU) at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Manhyia Government District Hospital.

Nanahemaa started a vigorous campaign and instituted an annual event to encourage mothers to breastfeed their young ones. The main reason she made a generous donation to the Mother-Baby Unit at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and Manhyia Government District Hospital.

During the commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Sagrenti War in a panel discussion on February 6, 2024, revelations emerged about the opposition faced by the decision to engage in war against the British, led by Sir Garnet Wolseley. Nana Afia Kobi, the Asantehemaa at that time, expressed reservations about the war, advising against it despite her son, Kofi Karikari, occupying the Golden Stool.

Discussing the role of women in Asante’s war and diplomacy, Professor Eugenia Anderson, a historian at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), recounted Afia Kobi’s stance.

On November 20, 1873, at an Asanteman Nhyiamu gathering, she reportedly said, “From olden times, it has been seen that God fights for Asante if war is just.

This one is unjust.”Despite her counsel, the decision of the military general prevailed, leading to the 1874 Sagrenti War, resulting in a significant defeat for the Asantes.

The aftermath saw the dethronement of Kofi Karikari and the ascent of Mensa Bonsu, another son of the Asantehemaa.Afia Kobi deemed the war against the British unjust, a sentiment supported by Prof. Samuel.

School Feeding Caterers turn to Asantehene, Chief Imam for intercession after terminated contracts

Caterers affected by the recent cancellation of contracts under the Ghana School Feeding Programme (GSFP) are seeking intervention from traditional and religious leaders, including the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu.

Their appeal comes in response to the termination of all existing caterer contracts, which took effect on May 2, 2025. The directive, issued by GSFP National Coordinator Hajia Fati Forgor, instructed that no caterer should prepare meals for the third term of the 2024/2025 academic year. While government has pledged to clear arrears from the second term, it has yet to communicate when payments will be made or outline a clear plan for re-engagement.

On Eyewitness News with Sammi Wiafe, Deputy PRO of the National School Feeding Caterers Association, Madam Margaret Larbi, revealed that the group has begun reaching out to influential figures across the country to help present their case.

“Our President said we have petitions to be sent. We’re trying to get in touch with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, to intervene,” she disclosed.

She further indicated that other respected voices, such as the Chief Imam, would also be approached to help mediate on behalf of the distressed caterers.

“So, we’re trying to get him to go and plead on our behalf. We’re trying to go to the Chief Imam. Tomorrow [Friday, May 9], we have a lot to do to send some petitions to other influential individuals in the country to be able to speak on our behalf,” she stated.

The mass contract termination has particularly hit hard those caterers who had already procured food supplies in anticipation of the third term.

Speaking on Channel One TV, Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, clarified that while the government will honour payments for meals already prepared, there will be no compensation for food items bought in advance without official instruction.

“I sympathise with the situation. There’s no room for compensation, but for the period that they have cooked, they will be paid,” she said.

Dr. Lartey added that the caterers should have been more cautious, given their understanding of the operational challenges facing the programme.

“Most of them were not cooking, and they are very much aware they were not cooking. Some too were cooking, but not consistently,” she explained.

The ministry says the termination is part of a broader restructuring initiative, with new recruitment procedures expected to be announced soon.

Lay down your weapons – Asantehene appeals to Bawku residents

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has called on all factions involved in the Bawku conflict to put an end to the violence and embrace dialogue as a path to lasting peace.

He assured that efforts to resolve the longstanding dispute are progressing, with discussions ongoing among key stakeholders.

Speaking at the Manhyia Palace when he received a delegation led by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, on Monday, March 17, 2025, the Asantehene expressed optimism that peace could soon be restored in Bawku.

“We are still on the Bawku issue. Now gun violence is on the low. I have invited the leaders of the parties involved; Bawku Naaba and the Nayiri. I have also spoken with the Mossi and Hausa ethnic groups,” he disclosed.

He further indicated that ongoing consultations would continue, including engagements with representatives of the Nayiri, who was unable to attend due to ill health.

“The Nayiri was not feeling very well, but I am waiting for a representative from his palace to come and see me on Tuesday. Then we can all have a conversation about the conflict,” he added.

Reiterating his call for peace, the Asantehene urged all involved to lay down their arms and commit to finding solutions through dialogue.

“I want to appeal to everyone in Bawku to lay down their weapons. I told all the stakeholders to inform their people to lay down their tools. We are discussing addressing all the historical challenges, which is fuelling the conflict.”

His call comes amid ongoing efforts to mediate between the feuding parties and restore stability to the conflict-prone area.

Free SHS should cover brilliant and needy students only – Otumfuo tells govt

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has urged a reassessment of Ghana’s Free SHS initiative, recommending that households with sufficient means contribute financially so that government support can be directed toward students in real need.

During a meeting with Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu, the Asantehene suggested a shared funding model, akin to previous arrangements where financial aid was granted to bright but disadvantaged students, while those with the ability to pay covered their own expenses.

“Those who can afford to pay, let’s have a second look at the policy. If someone can afford it, let’s allow them to pay.

“In the old times, when you passed, the bursary would look for good but needy students and award them scholarships, and those who could afford to pay did so.”

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has recognized the positive impact of the Free SHS policy but stressed the importance of a national discussion to tackle its shortcomings and secure its future.

“This Free SHS we are talking about, although we have implemented it, if we have a dialogue and find out that it will result in students coming home every now and then because there is no food, then it is not fit for purpose.”

He also pointed out several pressing concerns affecting secondary schools, including overcrowded dormitories, a lack of well-equipped science and ICT laboratories, irregular food supplies, and insufficient school buses.

“Our dormitories are overcrowded and lack science and ICT labs. Sometimes PTA makes contributions to support. The lack of school buses and the shortage of food should all be looked at. Let us implement it well so that students will stay in school and have enough to eat.”

Introduced in 2017, the Free SHS initiative was designed to make secondary education more accessible by eliminating financial barriers. However, while enrollment has risen, challenges regarding its funding and the quality of education remain.

“What at all do you seek?” – Asantehene fumes over Bantamahene’s involvement in multiple disputes

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed disappointment in Bantamahene, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI, for being involved in multiple conflicts that have disrupted peace in some communities.

Reports indicate that the Asantehene’s frustration is linked to a committee’s findings on the Adanwomase dispute over the community’s deity, which implicated Bantamahene.

During a meeting at the Kumasi Traditional Council, Bantamahene was fined eight rams for disobeying the Asantehene’s orders regarding the case. He was required to pay two of the rams immediately.

The Asantehene also listed several other disputes the chief had been involved in and questioned his motives for stirring tensions.

In rebuking the Bantamahene’s behavior, the Asantehene sternly quizzed “What at all do you seek?”

The Asantehene is reportedly troubled by Bantamahene’s actions, which he believes are disrupting peace and stability in the region.

Many see the Asantehene’s remarks as a warning, urging Bantamahene to reconsider his actions and the impact they have on the community.

Ohwim Chief destooled over galamsey, oath desecration by Asantehene

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has removed Nana Kusi Baaye II from his position as the Chief of Ohwim following serious allegations, including illegal mining activities and the desecration of the Great Oath.

During a Kumasi Traditional Council sitting on Monday, February 24, Nana Kusi Baaye II, who had ruled for 16 years, faced accusations ranging from unlawful land sales and extortion to engaging in galamsey—an illegal mining practice that has plagued various parts of Ghana.

The chief’s downfall began when he was summoned for allegedly invoking the Asantehene’s Great Oath (Ntamkese) without just cause—an act seen as both deceitful and a violation of the sanctity of the Golden Stool.

Further investigations during the council meeting uncovered additional accusations, including giving false testimony in a chieftaincy dispute.

In a significant turn of events, members of his own royal family and family head testified against him, claiming he had sold family lands under false pretenses, only to later allow those lands to be used for illegal mining operations.

Following the testimonies and evidence presented, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II ordered Nana Kusi Baaye II’s immediate destoolment, reinforcing his commitment to safeguarding traditional authority and preserving the dignity of the Golden Stool.

Despite the ruling, the former Ohwimhene maintains that he is innocent of all allegations.

Video: “He was intentionally stabbed” – Asantehene finally speaks on Nana Pooley’s death

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has addressed the tragic killing of Francis Frimpong, known as Nana Pooley, a devoted supporter of Kumasi Asante Kotoko. This is the first time the Asantehene has spoken publicly about the incident, which occurred nearly two weeks ago.

Nana Pooley was fatally stabbed during a match between the Porcupines and Nsoatreman in Nsoatre, in Week 19 of Ghana’s premier league. The tragic event has led to seven arrests, including that of Nsoatreman FC financier Ignatius Baffour-Awuah.

The former Employment and Labour Relations Minister is currently under a movement restriction order issued by District Court “B” in Sunyani.

In a video shared on social media, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who is the owner and life patron of Asante Kotoko, called for the swift apprehension of Pooley’s killer.

The incident has deeply shaken the football community and brought attention to the need for enhanced security measures at sporting events.

“It is unfortunate that somebody was killed because of a football match. He was intentionally stabbed to death—this is unacceptable. So, I urge you to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. Nobody can take the law into their own hands and kill another person. This death was needless, and the law must take its course.

“Whoever was responsible for the murder must be arrested and prosecuted. We live in a country governed by the rule of law. It is completely unacceptable that someone is killed just because of a football match. The person must be arrested immediately.

Whether it happened inside or outside the stadium, a human being has been killed, and the law must deal with the perpetrator.

A family has lost their loved one, who was a breadwinner. A thorough investigation must be carried out to get to the bottom of the case and ensure the culprit faces the full rigours of the law,” the Asantehene stated.

My concession is being looted by galamseyers – Otumfuo cries out

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has voiced strong concern over the unauthorized activities of illegal miners on his mining concession, resulting in extensive destruction.

He expressed disappointment that, despite government initiatives to curb illegal mining, the issue remains unresolved.

During a meeting with the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources on Friday, February 14, the Asantehene underscored the pressing need for more decisive action, pointing out its harmful consequences on both the environment and the economy.

He urged a comprehensive solution, including deploying security forces to safeguard mining areas, streamlining small-scale mining operations, and providing alternative economic opportunities for those involved in illegal mining.

He revealed that unlicensed miners have seized his mining concession at Akropong without his authorization.

“The site that was given to me has been invaded by illegal miners. Meanwhile, I had plans to give it out for proper mining. We must find a way to solve this crisis.”

The Asantehene highlighted the urgency of a comprehensive approach, including employment opportunities, to tackle illegal mining.

“These children who are engaged in galamsey need jobs. We need to assist them so they don’t go back to the sites.”

Mahama is intensifying security, traditional measures to check Bawku conflict – Defence Minister tells Asantehene

Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has reaffirmed President John Dramani Mahama’s commitment to resolving the ongoing conflict in Bawku through a combination of security enforcement and traditional mediation.

Speaking during a visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Friday, February 14, Dr. Boamah outlined the government’s strategy for tackling the crisis.

“President John Dramani Mahama is committed to bringing lasting peace to Bawku. He is intensifying a two-track (security and traditional) solution,” he stated.

The Defence Minister assured that efforts to stabilize the region remain a top priority, emphasizing that both military interventions and engagements with traditional leaders will play a key role.

“As promised earlier this week, we remain committed to restoring sustainable peace in Bawku,” he added.

Dr. Boamah, alongside Interior Minister Muntaka Mubarak and the Chief of the Defence Staff, met with the Asantehene to discuss possible solutions to the crisis. The Asantehene, who has been actively involved in mediation efforts, was recognized for his leadership in seeking a peaceful resolution.

The visit came amid heightened tensions in Bawku, where renewed clashes have led to loss of lives and growing insecurity. One of the most tragic incidents occurred recently when a five-month-old baby girl was brutally killed by armed assailants. The child was reportedly snatched from her mother, who had been ambushed and assaulted, before being thrown to the ground.

This shocking act of violence adds to the rising death toll from the conflict, which has claimed 55 lives since October 2024, particularly along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway. Despite increased security presence, attacks continue to instill fear among residents and travelers.

The chieftaincy dispute in Bawku, which has simmered for decades, remains at the core of the unrest. The long-standing rivalry between the Mamprusi and Kusasi ethnic groups over control of the Bawku Traditional Area has fueled tensions, with both sides holding historical and political claims to leadership.

Use your influence to help us get out of economic situation we inherited – Mahama to Asantehene

President John Dramani Mahama has appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to use his diplomatic influence to support Ghana’s efforts to navigate its current economic challenges.

Speaking at the first Akwasidae celebration of the year at the Manhyia Palace on January 19, President Mahama highlighted the severity of the nation’s financial difficulties. He outlined issues including high inflation, macroeconomic instability, a depreciating cedi, and Ghana’s exclusion from the international credit market due to a debt default.

“Our nation Ghana is facing a dire economic crisis. While this is not the first time we have been in such a crisis, this particular one is more daunting than we have ever experienced in our history,” Mahama stated.

Reflecting on his time in office from 2013 to 2017, Mahama acknowledged the Asantehene’s vital support during his previous administration, emphasizing how Otumfuo’s influence played a role in overcoming obstacles to restore economic growth.

“I had the privilege of calling on you to use your influence and diplomacy to smoothen the path so that it could open up the path towards prosperity and progress. Anytime I called on you, you didn’t hesitate. As we have inherited a difficult economic situation, I will be calling on you again from time to time. And I know that anytime I call on you, you will not hesitate so that we work together to put our nation back on its feet,” he added.

President Mahama also pledged to prioritize development in the Ashanti Region by completing stalled infrastructure projects, particularly in healthcare, as part of his commitment to fostering growth.

On behalf of the Asantehene, the Paramount Chief of the Mampong Traditional Area, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, encouraged Mahama to honour his promises to the people of Ghana.

“We would like you to please remember always the undertakings and promises you have made. I implore you to fulfil all your promises to us in the great Asante Kingdom,” Daasebre Osei Bonsu II remarked.

He expressed confidence in Mahama’s ability to deliver on his pledges, urging the President to ensure the completion of ongoing development projects both within the Ashanti Region and across the country.

“We have absolute trust in you that you shall not let us down,” the chief concluded.

Bawku conflict: Mahama to meet Asantehene on Jan 19

Former President John Dramani Mahama will meet the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on January 19 as part of his continued efforts to find lasting peace in the conflict-affected Bawku area in the Upper East Region.

This visit forms part of Mahama’s ongoing mediation efforts following a recent trip to Bawku and Nalerigu on January 14, where he engaged with local leaders and communities in a bid to promote dialogue and reconciliation in the conflict-stricken area.

During his meeting with the Mamprugu overlord, Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, Mahama assured the traditional leader of his government’s determination to prioritize peacebuilding and stability.

“I just came to appeal to him and his subjects to exercise restraint and patience and trust that we will resolve this matter amicably. So, I’m just appealing to my father that they should exercise patience while I set up the government,” he said.

He further reflected on discussions he had with former President Nana Akufo-Addo, revealing that some peace initiatives had been explored during the latter’s administration.

“In my last briefing with Nana Akufo-Addo, before he left office, he briefed me about some mediation efforts that they were undertaking. I wish to be able to discuss it with him and see how we can continue that effort. I know that he and the late Yagbonwura and Otumfuo were the ones who solved the Dagbon problem,” he recalled.

Mahama stressed the significance of his upcoming visit to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, acknowledging the Asantehene’s instrumental role in helping to resolve the Dagbon crisis.

“Nana Addo gave me a hint that Otumfuo has been playing some role, and so I’m supposed to be with Otumfuo on the 19th of this month. So, when I go, it is one of the issues I will discuss with him. Whatever comes out of it, I will inform my father [Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II],” Mahama stated.

The former President’s peace initiative aims to bring together influential traditional authorities to help bring an end to the prolonged conflict in Bawku, which has affected the region for decades.

‘I won’t depend on politicians’ – Asantehene reaches out to World Bank for Kumasi’s devt.

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has emphasized his preference for independent development efforts in Kumasi, stating he will not rely on Ghanaian politicians for the city’s progress.

The Asantehene made this assertion during a courtesy visit by the World Bank Vice President for Western and Central Africa, Ousmane Diagana. He called on the World Bank to support infrastructure improvements in Kumasi, particularly highlighting the need for a mass transit system to ease congestion and boost economic activity.

“Kumasi has grown significantly in population. The rapid transport system you’re proposing has been delayed since 2015 due to bureaucratic hurdles. We need to act now because the increased population and vehicular congestion are stifling economic development,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II remarked.

The Asantehene further stressed the importance of effective infrastructure as a catalyst for development and expressed his intention to bypass political processes to achieve this.

“If we have the right infrastructure, everything else will fall in place. I do not wish to depend on politicians for the development of Kumasi,” he stated.

Proposing an alternative approach, he added, “Let’s establish a social contract that directly supports these development initiatives so we can get it done.”

His remarks underscore a call for collaborative partnerships with global institutions like the World Bank to drive Kumasi’s transformation, independent of political influence.

2024 polls: Don’t pay attention to divisive and false prophecies, choose peace – Otumfuo

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has advised Ghanaians to disregard false prophecies that could jeopardise the nation’s peace and stability ahead of the December 2024 elections.

Delivering the Asantehene’s message at the annual prayer gathering on November 29, the Chief of Sewua, Nana Kwaku Amankwa Sarkodie, called on religious leaders to focus on fostering national unity rather than making predictions that could incite tension or chaos.

He further stressed the importance of vigilance in safeguarding the country’s peace, particularly during the election period.

“Ghanaians must focus on what unites us and ignore divisive and false prophecies,” he stated.

The Asantehene’s message comes as a timely reminder of the role of both citizens and religious leaders in maintaining a stable and harmonious environment during this critical period in the nation’s history.

“We will be going to the polls very soon. Otumfuo said I should tell you some individuals are engaging in false prophecies.

Some claim to be making prophecies to favour the New Patriotic Party (NPP), while others also make prophecies to favour the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“They have all forgotten that they have people among their followers who belong to different political parties and also hold different views,” Nana Kwaku Amankwa Sarkodie said.

The annual prayer gathering also featured intercessory prayers for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party.

Meanwhile, schoolchildren in Kumasi took to the streets to advocate for peace, emphasising the importance of unity during the electoral period.

These calls for peace have gained momentum following the signing of a peace pact by political parties, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring a peaceful election.

I wouldn’t have become president without your support – Akufo-Addo to Asantehene

President Akufo-Addo has expressed his deep appreciation to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, and the chiefs of Asanteman for their unwavering support throughout his presidency.

On Tuesday, November 27, 2024, Akufo-Addo visited the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi to personally thank the Asantehene and the chiefs as his term nears its conclusion.

He acknowledged that his presidency would not have been possible without the backing of Asanteman, highlighting their significant role in his achievements.

The president particularly lauded the Asantehene for his instrumental role in resolving the longstanding Dagbon chieftaincy dispute, a resolution that occurred under Akufo-Addo’s leadership.

He further noted that this peace had allowed him to be installed as a Dagomba chief.

“If not for Asanteman, I would not have become president. I’m eternally grateful for all the help you gave me during my tenure as president. There are a lot of things you have done for me, some of which I can’t mention in public. But there are some I have to mention, like the Dagbon chieftaincy conflict. The conflict had been raging for about 15 years when I came in, with nobody being able to resolve it.

“President Kufuor appointed you as the chairman of the committee for you to look into the conflict together with the Yagbonwura and Nayiri, and it was during my tenure that it was resolved. I know that if not for your leadership, this would not have happened, and I’m also very grateful for this,” he stated.

He added, “Because of the work you did at Dagbon, I have been given a stool there – I’m a Dagomba chief.”

Don’t resort to violence if you lose 2024 polls – Asantehene cautions politicians

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged politicians to accept the outcome of the upcoming 2024 general elections peacefully and desist from orchestrating any activity that would jeopardize the country’s peace.

Speaking at the Awukudae Festival on November 20, the revered monarch called for national unity and adherence to democratic principles while emphasizing patience and faith in God’s timing.

“We pray to God. We want a peaceful election. We do not want any violence. Tell everyone because of the power of God, Ghana will continue to exist. We have it in our constitution that we will hold our elections every four years. There are people who have lost in previous elections. They have been patient to contest several times. You have to be patient for your time because if it is God’s plan, you will win,” Otumfuo said.

His appeal comes as Ghana prepares for the December 7 elections, with less than 15 days to the polls. Concerns about potential electoral violence remain high following clashes in past elections that claimed several lives. Prior to the polls, political parties sign a peace pact, however, it has not been so this year as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has decided against it, citing unfairness in past electoral process and lack of justice to those who died in the 2020 general elections.

To mitigate such risks, security services, particularly the Ghana Police Service, have implemented robust measures to ensure a peaceful, free, and fair election. Among these initiatives is the inauguration of a National Election Security Taskforce Press Briefing Centre to combat misinformation during the electoral process.

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr. George Akuffo Dampare underscored the importance of curbing false information. He urged media practitioners to partner with the police to maintain public trust and protect the democratic process.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has assured Ghanaians of timely results declaration. Dr. Bossman Asare, Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services, confirmed that the presidential election results would be announced within 72 hours after polls close.

“By convention, we work within 72 hours, and I believe we are going to work within the 72 hours to ensure that Ghanaians know the outcome of the presidential election,” Dr. Asare stated.

We’ll petition Otumfuo to prevent election manipulation in Ashanti region – NDC

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has stated its plan to petition Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, about an alleged plot to rig the upcoming elections in the Ashanti Region.

The NDC accuses Brigadier General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, of being involved in this scheme, which they claim is being carried out under government directives.

The party argues that the plot is designed to influence the electoral process, beginning with the special voting on December 2.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, November 19, Sammy Gyamfi, the NDC’s National Communications Officer, revealed that the party intends to seek the Asantehene’s intervention to avoid potential violence.

Mr Gyamfi highlighted that Brigadier General Opoku’s operations are based in Kumasi, and given Otumfuo’s deep commitment to peace in the region, the NDC hopes he will step in to address the situation.

“We are going to ensure that the King of the Ashanti people, who is very much interested in the peace of our nation and the peace of the processes leading to, during, and after the December 7 election, we will officially draw his attention to these developments because the headquarters of the operation of this guy [Brigadier General Michael Opoku] is Kumasi.

“And I know that the Otumfuo cherishes the peace that the people of Kumasi and Ashanti region enjoy, and he will want to take an interest in this matter and call this guy to order.”

Asantehene cries at funeral of Akyempimhene

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was visibly moved to tears during the final rites for the late Akyempimhene, Oheneba Adusei Poku, on November 18.

The solemn moment underscored the deep bond between the king and his departed kinsman.

In a video shared by The Asante Nation, the Asantehene struggled to contain his grief as he sat on a palanquin. Despite his tears, he honoured the occasion by dancing gracefully, his movements met with cheers from his people, who rallied to offer emotional support.

At one point, Otumfuo was handed a black cloth by his subjects, which he used to wipe away his tears, highlighting the profound sense of loss felt by the Asanteman royal household.

The funeral drew several prominent figures, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and other high-ranking officials, reflecting the significance of Oheneba Adusei Poku’s position.

The late Akyempimhene, who was the son of the 15th Asantehene, Otumfuo Opoku Ware II, played a vital role within Asanteman. He was the eldest of five children and the only male child of his lineage.

I will do everything to mend my relationship with Otumfuo – Dormaahene

Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II has made a commitment to address and resolve any misunderstandings or disputes with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

This pledge was made during a recent courtesy call from the presidential candidate for the New Force party, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar.

Cheddar’s visit to the Dormaahene’s palace was part of his regional campaign tour, during which he advocated for peace and reconciliation between the two traditional leaders.

The efforts to foster dialogue highlight the significance of unity within the region’s traditional leadership structures.

“Otumfuo and Osagyefo are two significant names, and both are chiefs. If it weren’t for the blessings of God, they wouldn’t have become chiefs. But things happen for a reason.

“I came here with drinks to appease you, and I will plead on behalf of Otumfuo as well to cease all grudges between the two of you.

“I, Nana Kwame Bediako, am offering my head for the sake of peace. If the two of you are united, we have peace in Ghana. But if there is separation, then we are also separated. What I am asking them to do, if it doesn’t become possible, they should behead me,” Cheddar said.

Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II assured that his commitment to fostering peace with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will be steadfast and impactful.

He emphasized that his dedication to reconciliation and harmony will not go unfulfilled.

“What he said has left me speechless. He has addressed issues that our leaders in the country cannot talk about. Who doesn’t want peace? I have thought about it, and I promise him that his efforts won’t be in vain. If not for Ghana’s 1992 constitution that prohibits chiefs from engaging in politics, I would have declared my support for him,” he said.

Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II has openly criticized Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II regarding specific traditional authorities that he believes the Asantehene lacks the entitlement to oversee.

Despite not having a clear reason for their discord, it is evident that the relationship between the two leaders has been strained, marked by instances of reported ‘bad blood’ over the years.

Recently, Dormaahene’s criticisms have focused on the controversial elevation of Fiaprehene to paramountcy, a move he contends exceeds the Asantehene’s authority.

This ongoing dispute highlights the deep-seated tensions between the two traditional rulers, reflecting broader issues within the chieftaincy that have attracted media attention.

  • This is why Afia Pokua’s apology was rejected by Manhyia – Royal historian explains

This is why Afia Pokua’s apology was rejected by Manhyia – Royal historian explains

A royal historian affiliated with the Asantehene, Osei Bonsu Sarfo Kantanka, has shared with the BBC the proper protocol for criticizing the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom.

He emphasized the importance of involving the queen mother in such matters, stating, “You go through the queen mother – she is the only person who can rebuke him. If you don’t go through the queen mother and instead do it yourself, then you’re in trouble”.

His remarks follow journalist Afia Pokua’s criticisms of the Asantehene regarding his management of ethnic tensions and her dissatisfaction with the deference shown to him by politicians.

During an interview with Mona Gucci on local channel Onua TV, Pokua remarked on the perceived dominance of the Asante community, asserting,

“Even the president bowed to show respect to the chief,” Pokua said in an interview with Mona Gucci earlier this month on local channel Onua TV.

She added, “Asante is not the whole of Ghana. If you are only thinking about Asante, they can amend the laws so that you can separate yourself from the rest of the country.”

Pokua’s statements sparked significant backlash, with many perceiving them as disrespectful towards the revered Asantehene.

In light of the public reaction, she made a visit to the Asantehene’s residence, Manhyia Palace, in Kumasi, to issue an unconditional apology.

Despite having apologized previously on social media and during a live television broadcast, she felt compelled to seek forgiveness in person.

Accompanied by elders and dressed in black, Afia Pokua and Mona Gucci knelt before the palace to express their contrition.

However, her apology was rebuffed by the Asantehene’s representatives, who instructed her to leave.

Furthermore, Osei Bonsu Sarfo Kantanka criticized Pokua for her implication that the elderly Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II was hard of hearing, asserting that such language would not be deemed constructive criticism even when directed at an ordinary person.

“If you use such words even with an ordinary person, it would not be taken as constructive criticism.”

He reiterated that Pokua’s lack of adherence to proper protocol was the crux of the issue.

For her apology to be valid, he suggested she should have approached the Agona traditional authority accompanied by her parents and representatives from the TV station that aired her critical comments.

“If the apology were accepted, the Agona chief would then convey the message to the Asantehene, and a date would be set for her to formally apologize at Manhyia Palace,” the historian elaborated.

    Why Asantehene destooled Ejisu-Kyerekrom Dikro

On Tuesday, September 17, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II officially stripped Opanin Kwaku Kyere from his position as Ejisu-Kyerekrom Dikro after Kyere was found guilty of violating the Great Oath, a fundamental and sacred tenet of Ashanti tradition.

The destoolment, a rare and serious action in Ashanti custom, emphasizes the gravity of the offense.

The Great Oath embodies the core values of the Ashanti Kingdom trust, integrity, and loyalty and any breach is seen as a severe violation of these principles.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, known for his dedication to preserving Ashanti customs and ensuring justice, personally oversaw the destoolment process.

After a careful examination of the evidence, the Asantehene made it clear that such breaches will not be tolerated under his leadership.

This decisive action reaffirms the Asantehene’s commitment to upholding the traditions and values that are central to the Ashanti Kingdom’s identity.

  • If Asantehene can fight galamsey, why can’t you? – Sefa Kayi goes hard on Akufo-Addo

If Asantehene can fight galamsey, why can’t you? – Sefa Kayi goes hard on Akufo-Addo

Host of Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Morning Show, Kwami Sefa Kayi, has expressed disappointment with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the government over their handling of illegal mining activities, known locally as galamsey.

According to Sefa Kayi, the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s decisive action against galamsey implicates the president and highlights the inefficiencies of Ghana’s security agencies.

During a panel discussion on his show, Sefa Kayi pointed out that the Asantehene‘s move to investigate and destool chiefs involved in illegal mining is a stark contrast to the government’s approach to combating the issue. He noted that Otumfuo’s proactive stance serves as an indictment on the president’s leadership.

“Otumfuo’s action was informed by a Chronicle report. He followed up by causing an NIB investigation. NIB is a state intelligence organization. So, if Otumfuo has caused the NIB to work for him, how about the president?” Sefa Kayi asked.

“At the end of the day, while we applaud Otumfuo, it is an indictment on the president, the government, and our security agencies. Because if it can be done by the Asantehene, then why not?”

Sefa Kayi’s remarks came after the Asantehene sanctioned the destoolment of several chiefs, including Sabronum Gyaasehene Nana Awua Gyau, Sabronum Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene, following their alleged involvement in galamsey.

On August 26, 2024, Otumfuo ordered these actions based on an investigation by the National Investigations Bureau (NIB), which he had personally commissioned.

Otumfuo’s bold decision has intensified public calls for the government to take stronger measures against illegal mining, a practice that continues to wreak havoc on the environment and threatens the country’s natural resources.

As Sefa Kayi pointed out, the Asantehene’s ability to leverage state institutions to address the issue raises questions about the government’s commitment to effectively tackling galamsey.

The recent destoolments come amid ongoing pressure on President Akufo-Addo to fulfil his promises to eliminate illegal mining and protect Ghana’s water bodies and forests from further degradation.

Child ‘orders’ Otumfuo to guard his flag; netizens react

Netizens on the X platform cannot hold on to their laughter and smiles after a young boy gave his flag to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for keeping.

The minor who sat with the traditional authority engaged the royal before handing over his flag and dashing off. He did so with his left hand.

Immediately after bolting, some subchiefs and security personnel could not hide their shock over what happened. A subchief tried to take the flag from the Asantehene but Otumfuo prevented him. The child returned and took the flag from the Asantehene.

This innocent act of the child has left X users excited and baffled despite the admission of how wrong the child’s actions were. They noted that per customs and traditions, it is wrong for a child to interact with an adult using the left hand. They also shared that the Asantehene cannot be tasked by any individual.

For them, this action shows how pure and innocent children are.

    Some comments are as follows.

“Kids will always be kids no matter the person they are dealing. Their innocence makes them lovely to deal with.”

“Children will humble you without them knowing sef.”

“The military man say ei children no dey care oo He dey see am like ihn friend”

Kings have sacked subjects involved in galamsey, what have you done? – Govt quizzed

Former President of the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Rev. Professor Paul Frimpong-Manso, has issued a strong critique of the Ghanaian government’s response to illegal mining (galamsey), challenging officials to take firmer action against those involved.

In an interview on JoyNews’ Upfront on Thursday, September 5, Rev. Prof. Frimpong-Manso expressed deep frustration with the authorities for failing to curb galamsey, which continues to destroy the country’s water bodies and environment.

Referencing recent actions by traditional rulers, he questioned the government’s apparent inaction. “If Otumfuo could recently sack three chiefs, if two journalists can go and arrest some people and bring them to justice, if a king in the Eastern Region can just order bulldozers to be burned, what about those who control the police, the Mining Commission, the Minister, the District Chief Executives (DCEs), and the rest?” he asked.

The reverend highlighted the proactive steps taken by Ghanaian chiefs in addressing the involvement of local leaders in illegal mining. Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II recently dismissed three chiefs for their roles in galamsey, while a king in the Eastern Region ordered the destruction of mining equipment to combat illegal activities.

Rev. Prof. Frimpong-Manso used these examples to challenge government institutions, questioning why traditional rulers are leading the charge while those in positions of formal power seem to lag behind.

Rev. Prof. Frimpong-Manso warned that the country faces an existential threat if immediate measures are not taken to combat illegal mining.

“We are sitting on a time bomb. It is a disaster. We are committing a national genocide, not only against ourselves but against generations yet unborn,” he cautioned.

He also criticized both major political parties—the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—for failing to include effective strategies against galamsey in their manifestos. He emphasized that the issue should be a national priority, as the destruction caused by illegal mining is irreversible and could affect the nation’s future.

Rev. Prof. Frimpong-Manso called the current situation a “complete institutional failure,” arguing that the problem cannot be solved with mere rhetoric. Instead, he demanded decisive action from key figures in law enforcement, the Mining Commission, and other relevant authorities.

In addition to his critique of the government, the former council president issued a challenge to his fellow church leaders.

“As for the Church leaders, please, we are the conscience of the nation. We must either keep quiet and sink together with the populace… So, to my fellow church leaders, we must preach the truth. People may hate us, fight us, or not understand us, but that is what Desmond Tutu and others did to liberate South Africa from apartheid,” he said.

He urged church leaders to go beyond the pulpit and take a more active stance against galamsey. He proposed that religious leaders wear red bands and organize demonstrations to demand immediate action.

“Our nation is being destroyed. We are heading toward national doom, and it’s better late than never. I hope that by this coming Sunday, church leaders will wear red bands, go out, and demonstrate—even if it is to the Jubilee House or elsewhere,” he urged.

Video: Asantehene destools three chiefs over alleged involvement ‘galamsey’

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has taken decisive action against illegal mining, or ‘galamsey,’ by destooling three chiefs from Sabronum.

The Gyaasehene, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene were all removed from their positions during the Asanteman Council meeting on August 26, 2024, at the Manhyia Palace.

This bold move followed an investigation by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), which confirmed the chiefs’ involvement in galamsey activities, a practice that has severely damaged the environment and threatened the health and livelihoods of the people in the Ashanti Region.

The Asantehene’s decision to strip the chiefs of their titles was prompted by a petition from concerned residents of Sabronum, who sought to put an end to the destructive mining activities in their area.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during the council meeting, reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the environment and protecting the people of the Ashanti Region from the adverse effects of illegal mining.

He made it clear that any actions endangering the well-being of his subjects would not be tolerated within the Asante Kingdom.

In the wake of the destoolment, a new leader has been appointed for Sabronum. Kofi Asante has been selected as the new Sabronum Manhene, signalling a fresh start for the community.

The hope is that this change in leadership will help steer Sabronum away from the challenges posed by galamsey and towards a more sustainable future.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s firm stance on illegal mining has elicited a range of reactions. While many have lauded his decision as a necessary step to combat galamsey, some have expressed concern about the impact on the families of the destooled chiefs.

Nonetheless, the Asantehene’s actions underscore his unwavering resolve to preserve the integrity of the Asante Kingdom and ensure the safety and prosperity of its people.

Gyasehene of Sabronum, two chiefs destooled by Asantehene for engaging in galamsey

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has removed Nana Gyau Baffour Atuonin, the Gyasehene of Sabronum, along with two other chiefs from their positions for their involvement in illegal mining activities.

The decision effectively strips them of their titles and duties.

This action comes in response to protests from local youth and residents, who petitioned the Asanteman Traditional Council about the severe damage to farmlands and water bodies caused by illegal mining.

On Monday, the Asantehene summoned the Gyasehene, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene to the Manhyia Palace to address their participation in these illicit activities. The affected chiefs are Nana Gyau Baffour Atuonin (Gyasehene of Sabronum), Nana Osei Kwadwo (Akyeamehene), and Nana Tabiri Gyansah (Baamuhene).

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II referred to a National Bureau of Investigation report that followed his order for an inquiry into illegal mining in Sabronum.

He has warned that further engagement in such activities could lead to their arrest.

The recent removal follows disappointment among Sabronum’s youth, who were dismayed when the chiefs failed to address the issue of illegal mining during their appearance before the Asanteman Traditional Council.

A new leader has been appointed to oversee the Sabronum community’s affairs. The Asantehene’s action underscores his commitment to tackling illegal mining and holding traditional rulers accountable within the Asante Kingdom.

  • Otumfuo’s sub-chiefs ‘betray’ him again on ‘galamsey order’

Otumfuo’s sub-chiefs ‘betray’ him again on ‘galamsey order’

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s directive banning his subordinate chiefs from engaging directly or indirectly in illegal mining—a menace that has devastated the country’s forest reserves and water bodies—has once again been flouted.

The Sabronum Gyaasehene Nana Awua Gyau Atuomi, Akyeamehene, and Baamuhene are the most recent traditional figures to have had their titles stripped due to their involvement in illegal mining.

Their titles were revoked during an Asanteman Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace on August 26, 2024.

The actions of the Gyaasehene are said to have contributed to the pollution of River Asuonfou, a major water source in the area.

The destooled chief was investigated by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) on the orders of the Asantehene, following a report about his unlawful activities. While being probed, the Gyaasehene denied the allegations.

Addressing the gathering at the Manhyia Palace, the Asantehene stated that the NIB’s findings corroborated the report, leading to his decision to destool the Gyaasehene and two others.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II subsequently handed his three subordinates over to the police for the law to take its full course.

“If the DCE could not arrest you, be rest assured that after you have left here, if you go and engage in any form of illegal mining, I will ensure you are arrested and prosecuted,” he said.

The Asantehene is enforcing strict discipline among his traditional authorities, who are in the best position to protect the environment from the actions of illegal miners.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has repeatedly demonstrated his commitment to sanctioning sub-chiefs who flout his directive and fail to ensure that illegal mining is not tolerated in their jurisdictions.

In August last year, the Asantehene removed Nana Saforo Koto from his position as the Chief of Bekwai-Abodom due to his involvement in illegal mining.

In the interim, Otumfuo Tutu II has appointed the Akwamuhene of Sabronum as caretaker of the area and has supervised the election of a new candidate, Kofi Asante, as part of the process to enstool a new chief.

  • Denyasehemaa wails as Asantehene reveals she is a commoner and not a royal

Denyasehemaa wails as Asantehene reveals she is a commoner and not a royal

Denyasehemaa Nana Adutwiwaa Bonin III was left in tears after the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, declared that she was not a royal during the Asanteman Council meeting on Monday, August 19, 2024.

The declaration came as a shock, not only to the queen mother but also to the attendees at the Asanteman Council, who had gathered to resolve stool disputes in the Berekum, Dua Yaw Nkwanta, Awua Dumase, Sabronum, and Denyase traditional areas.

Presiding over the meeting, the Asantehene recounted the history of the Denyase stool, revealing that the Denyasehemaa, who had long held her position, did not have the royal bloodline required to occupy the stool.

The revelation stemmed from an ongoing challenge to her royalty status, brought forth by Achiasebaapanin Nana Akua Afriyie, who invoked the Great Oath to substantiate her claim. In response, the queen mother countered with a similar invocation, firmly insisting on her lineage.

However, Nana Akua Afriyie maintained that she shared no blood ties with the Denyasehemaa, casting doubt on the queen mother’s royal legitimacy. After a thorough review of the evidence, the Asantehene ruled in favor of Nana Akua Afriyie, stating that the Denyasehemaa was, in fact, a commoner and not fit to hold the title.

Upon hearing the verdict, Nana Adutwiwaa Bonin III could not contain her emotions. As the king was delivering his statement, the queen mother suddenly approached the Asantehene, fell to the ground, and began to weep uncontrollably.

In a video shared by Opemsuo Radio, the guards of the Asantehene are seen lifting the Denyasehemaa from the floor as she continued to wail, her hands on her head in anguish.

The Asanteman Council has now ordered both parties to present their respective family trees for further examination by the committee to confirm the final resolution.

Videos shared by Opemsuo Radio show the Asantehene sitting in state at his Henley residence, where he welcomed subjects of Asanteman from across the UK who came to pay homage to the occupant of the Golden Stool.

In a brief address, Otumfuo advised his subjects to reject arrogance and to embrace unity and humility as they live in a foreign land.

“Allow transparency in all things for truth and peace to prevail. I abhor arrogance; humility is what I stand for,” Otumfuo said.

We are not politicizing Manhyia Palace – NPP to NDC

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has refuted claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) alleging its intention to politicize the Manhyia palace.

Deputy General Secretary of the NDC, Mustapha Gbande, suggested that the NPP plans to involve the revered traditional institution in partisan politics through the selection of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a royal from the Manhyia palace.

However, in an interview with Citi News, Haruna Mohammed, Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, described Gbande’s comments as unfortunate.

“Unfortunately, when people are identified by where they come from, there is no doubt that Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh is from a royal gate and that is a fact. The chief [Asantehene] touted this particular angle of which Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh comes.

“Where lies the drawing of the Asantehene or the [Manhyia] palace into politics? The Asantehene’s palace is the most revered in our land. And I don’t think that the Asantehene has ever engaged himself in political activity.

“He is a very distinguished king who is much respected by the rank and file of the kingdom. But it is not a crime for any member that comes from that palace and without title within the chieftaincy divide within the palace to do politics.”

Asantehene to destool chiefs engaging land guards

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has issued a stern warning, declaring his readiness to destool any chief found harboring or condoning the illegal activities of land guards within their jurisdictions.

“A practice that didn’t have any place in Asanteman has started gaining roots – Land guards,” Otumfuo remarked, expressing his deep concern over the growing presence of these illegal operatives involved in land disputes. He disclosed that a committee comprising security agencies has been established to investigate and root out this unlawful practice.

The Asantehene minced no words in his threat, stating, “The police and the military will inform me about the locations where these practices are occurring. Any chief implicated in the report will face destoolment. Let us await the findings of the committee.”

Emphasizing the sanctity of land and the traditional methods for resolving disputes, Otumfuo questioned the necessity for resorting to land guards.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council has previously acknowledged the historical absence of land guards in the region due to effective stewardship of stool lands vested in Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and his chiefs.

They reiterated the importance of utilizing accepted channels for resolving land disputes and called upon all parties involved to adhere to established protocols.

Why will people beat, insult others just to have a seat in parliament? – Otumfuo to Bagbin

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has raised concerns about the widespread ambition to become Members of Parliament (MPs).

In a meeting with Parliament Speaker Alban S.K. Bagbin at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on Sunday, June 30, 2024, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II questioned the reasons behind this strong desire, highlighting the extreme measures some individuals are willing to resort to, including insults and physical confrontations.

“Why is it that everyone wants to go to Parliament? What is there that people will beat others and insult people just to go to Parliament? This is something that you have to pay attention to,” Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said.

He also criticized the unrealistic pledges made by certain parliamentary candidates, emphasizing that MPs lack the necessary budgetary resources to fulfill such promises.

“As an MP, you don’t even have a budget, so why make promises to fix roads and other things that you know you cannot deliver?”

Bagbin is presently undertaking a three-day official tour of the Ashanti Region as part of a nationwide commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Fourth Republic.

Video: “He can’t even wrap the cloth” – Otumfuo ridicules son during Akwasidae

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, received homage from his subjects and visitors from far and wide during the sacred festival On Sunday, June 24, 2024, .

The event, which took place at the Manhyia Palace, marked the fifth Akwasidae of the year and featured a moment of humor, initiated by the Asantehene himself, much to the amusement of his courtiers and guests.

The light-hearted incident occurred when Lady Julia Osei Tutu, the Asantehene’s wife, led the royal family’s nuclear members to pay their respects.

As Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie, the king’s son, approached to greet his father, some courtiers stepped in to help him adjust his cloth according to custom. Traditionally, a male approaching the king must lower the cloth draped over his shoulder as a sign of respect.

Watching the prince already struggling, being whipped up by the courtiers, His Majesty could not help but retort with a comment: “Na ntoma yi wɔn hunu fira mo san akɔworɔ aka ho…” translated as “He is already struggling with wearing the cloth, and you want to take it off again?”

The king’s clearly humorous attempt had the desired effect, instantly drawing laughter from everyone present, including Nana Kyeretwie’s sister, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem. Seizing the moment, the royal courtiers persisted, giving the young prince a lesson on the proper way to wear a cloth before he finally greeted the king.

In another display of culture and family history, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem presented herself to her father, wearing a kente outfit that her mother, HRH Lady Julia Osei Tutu, had worn over two decades ago.

You don’t have the right to install a paramount chief at Fiapre – Sunyani West to Asantehene

The Odomase No.1 Traditional Council in the Sunyani West Municipality of the Bono Region is reportedly incensed by Fiaprehene Obrempong Professor Kyem Amponsah II’s decision to join the Asanteman Traditional Council.

According to Sunyani West chiefs, Fiaprehene Kyem Amponsah II cannot join the Asanteman Council as he is settling on their land.

During a press conference on Friday, June 29, 2024, Nana Godlonve Kwaku Boateng, the Kontirehene of Obumasi 1, stated that Obumasi was never conquered by the Ashanti Kingdom, thus Asantehene cannot install a paramount chief on their land.

He issued a stern warning to Fiaprehene Kyem Amponsah II, advising him against joining the Asanteman Council and asserting that the chief could leave their land if he chose to do so.

“He can leave for any town he wishes. He can serve anybody he wants. But he cannot take our property because he came to meet our land, which belongs to our ancestors. He should leave our land because it is for the children of Fiapre.

“I spoke to our family head and he agreed with me that the Asantehene cannot leave Asante and install a paramount chief in Fiapre because when he (the Fiaprehene) needed land to settle on, it was his (the family head’s) father who gave him the land. And so no one can live on his father’s land and serve another person,” he said in Twi.

He added, “You (Fiaprehene) are saying you are your own man and you can do what you want. But our land does not belong to the Asantehene. Obumasi is not one of the lands conquered by the Asante.”

Furthermore, Nana Yaa Adansi Puduo II, the Ohemaa of Odumasi No. 1, criticized Fiaprehene Kyem Amponsah II for what she deemed an act of ingratitude.

She emphasized that the chief’s decision to join the Asanteman Council disregarded the generosity of Odumasi’s chief and people, who had provided his ancestors with land when they had nowhere else to go.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has voiced concerns over the slow progress of several hospital projects in Ghana, particularly those in the Ashanti Region.

He has urged for expedited efforts to complete these projects to ensure the health and well-being of the people.

During a meeting with a delegation from the Ministry of Health, led by the sector Minister, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, the Asantehene stressed the importance of prioritizing health infrastructure.

He emphasized that although funds may be limited, the government must strive to do its best to ensure that health facilities are completed and operational to serve the needs of the population.

The Asantehene acknowledged recent improvements in the financial sector and recommended that the Ministry of Health collaborate with the Ministry of Finance to secure funding for completing hospital projects across the country, specifically those under the Agenda 111 initiative.

He pointed out that securing the necessary funds and completing these projects on schedule is crucial for enhancing healthcare delivery and ensuring the health and well-being of the people.

Particular concern was expressed over the stalled Sewua Hospital project. The Asantehene noted that despite significant investments in hospital equipment, the facility remains non-operational due to issues such as inadequate power supply and poor road infrastructure.

He warned that if these issues are not addressed promptly, the equipment will become obsolete and wasted.

Highlighting the potential benefits of operationalizing the Sewua Hospital, the Asantehene mentioned that it could alleviate the patient load on the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), aiding the smooth implementation of the ‘Heal the KATH’ project.

He also called for the expedited completion of the KNUST Teaching Hospital and emphasized the importance of ongoing projects at Trede.

In response, Dr. Okoe-Boye praised the Asantehene for his ‘Heal KATH’ initiative, which aims to enhance healthcare delivery. He assured that the government is committed to completing all ongoing health projects in the region.

The Minister also visited KATH to inspect the ongoing construction of the Maternity and Children’s block. To further decongest KATH, Dr. Okoe-Boye suggested that the Ghana Health Service could sign a memorandum of understanding with the Teaching Hospital.

This agreement could include modalities for directing certain care services to facilities like Sewua Hospital, thereby easing the pressure on KATH.
