Manhyia Palace has reportedly summoned Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known asChairman Wontumi, the Ashanti regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
This summons follows allegations that Wontumi challenged the authority of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
According to a report from Onuaonline.com, Wontumi openly questioned the Asantehene’s authority during a session of the NPP parliamentary primaries vetting committee last week.
The report states that, without provocation, the party chairman asserted that he had established his own kingdom and would not hesitate to challenge Otumfuo if they disagreed on an issue.
“I have built my own kingdom, I have my own police and military, and I will speak my mind to Otumfuo if I disagree on an issue with him (Otumfuo)” the report quoted Wontumi as stating.
The report highlighted that Henry Nana Boakye, the NPP National Organiser, served as the chairman of the vetting committee during the incident.
Additionally, Kokosohene Nana Kwaku Duah, who was present at the time, is reported to have expressed a strong objection to Wontumi’s statement.
“For you to even say those words in my presence is unacceptable, and I’m not happy about your weird and disrespectful behaviour,” Kokosohene reportedly fumed at Wontumi.
Subsequent to the incident, reports suggest that the Asanteman Traditional Council has penned a letter to Justin Frimpong Kodua, the General Secretary of the NPP.
The purpose of this communication is to request facilitation forChairman Wontumi’s appearance at the Manhyia Palace. The aim is for Wontumi to provide an explanation regarding the alleged disrespect shown towards Otumfuo.

President Akufo-Addo’s office has urged Ghanaians to dismiss as baseless and unfounded the assertions circulating on social media that President Akufo-Addo clandestinely provides support to Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, amid what some perceive as continuous ‘attacks’ on Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
In response to the accusations, Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, characterized the allegations as frivolous, untrue, and lacking substantiation. He encouraged Ghanaians to dismiss the claims.
“Kindly disregard commentary being made on social media to the effect that the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is “supporting the Dormaahene” to, as it were, “attack the Asantehene”. These are warped figments of some people’s imaginations, and the general public is implored to treat them with the contempt that they deserve” a Friday January 5 post on Arhin’s Facebook wall read.
He maintained that, on no occasion has the president met with the Dormaahene to prep him on how to disrespect the Asantehene.
According to him, it has never happened in the past and it will never happen.
“Indeed, on no occasion has President Akufo-Addo held a secret meeting with the Dormaahene to, as it were, prop him up to disrespect the Asantehene. No such thing has happened, and no such thing will ever happen. President Akufo-Addo, as he has done since his assumption of office on 7th January 2020, enjoys fruitful working relations with all Chiefs, and will continue to do so until the end of his mandate in January 2025” the Facebook post further read.
For some time now, the Dormaahene has been vocal on the need to change certain components of Ghana’s Chieftaincy Act, specifically, the use of Asantehene and Paramount Chiefs in the constitution.
The Presidency has issued a swift response to circulating rumors on social media suggesting that President Akufo-Addo is endorsing Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyeman Badu II, in an alleged attack on the revered Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Communications Director at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, has categorically dismissed the claims.
In a Facebook post, Eugene Arhin, emphasized that the claims are mere products of individuals’ imagination. Arhin urged the public to dismiss such assertions with disdain.
“Indeed, on no occasion has President Akufo-Addo held a secret meeting with the Dormaahene to, as it were, prop him up to disrespect the Asantehene. No such thing has happened, and no such thing will ever happen,” portions of the statement read.
He further noted that President Akufo-Addo will continue to work harmoniously with all traditional leaders in the country until the end of his tenure.
The Asanteman Council, the highest traditional authority in Asante, has unveiled the schedule for commemorating the 150th anniversary of the 3rd Anglo-Asante war, commonly known as the Sagrenti war.
This conflict resulted in the burning and looting of the palace of the Asantehene, Kofi Karikari.
According to Nana Otuo Siriboe II, the Juabenhene, the anniversary will be observed with a symposium on February 6, 2024, and a durbar on February 8, 2024.
The decision was disclosed during the last meeting of the year of the Asanteman Council at the Manhyia Palace.
“The war was fought on 6th February. The plan we have on the table is that we will hold a symposium on the 6th of February, and on the 8th, we will hold a durbar,” he stated, as reported by Graphic Online’s Kwame Asare Boadu.
The commemoration of the Sagrenti war’s anniversary is set to be a significant event in Asanteman in 2024.
This year will also mark the Silver Jubilee of the coronation of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Additionally, the Juabenhene revealed that a 700-page book chronicling the history of the Asante Kingdom, compiled in collaboration between the British and traditional rulers of the Kingdom, will be launched.
The Sagrenti war occurred in 1874 when the British army, led by General Sir Garnet Wolseley, confronted the Asante army, which had earlier defeated the British and attacked the coastal states of the Gold Coast.
Referred to as the “Sagrenti War” due to pronunciation challenges, the conflict led to the abandonment of Kumasi by the Ashanti people.
The British, arriving on February 4, demolished the royal palace with explosives, leaving Kumasi in ruins, as documented in an article titled “The Sagrenti War and the Sacking of Kumasi” by the Edward A. Ulzen Foundation.
The Chamber of Automobile Dealership Ghana (CADEG) has expressed appreciation for the role played by key traditional leaders, including Asantehene, Okyehene, Ga Mantse, and others, in advocating for the suspension of the import restriction regulation.
The Legislative Instrument (L.I) proposed a licensing system for the importation of 22 restricted items, such as cars, rice, sugar, poultry, diapers, and animal intestines.
The minority in Parliament opposed the L.I., leading to its suspension by the government for further consultation. CADEG credited the traditional leaders for their collaborative efforts in fostering informed dialogue with relevant stakeholders.
“Your commitment to our shared cause has been instrumental in fostering a collaborative and informed dialogue with key stakeholders, including policymakers and government officials,” the statement pointed out.
The statement highlighted that the government’s decision to suspend the import restriction regulation demonstrated not only its responsiveness but also its commitment to engaging in a comprehensive and inclusive decision-making process.
“The suspension of the Bill is a testament to the effectiveness of our collective efforts and the strength of our advocacy supported by your Eminence. Your dedication to ensuring that the concerns of the automobile industry were heard and considered during the process has significantly contributed to the positive outcome we’ve achieved,” the statement reiterated.
CADEG also added: “As we continue to work towards well-balanced and sustainable importation policies, we recognise and appreciate the pivotal role you have played in this journey.”
“Your support has been crucial in upholding the interests of the industry and promoting fair and equitable trade opportunities.”
CADEG expressed its anticipation of the government’s continued partnership and collaboration as they collectively address future challenges and opportunities within the automobile sector. The statement emphasized the potential for joint efforts in developing policies that would contribute to the growth and sustainability of the industry and the overall Ghanaian economy.
“We are grateful to your outfit for this unwavering support and commitment to the success of CADEG’s advocacy initiatives, and we value our partnership. Once again, we are grateful for the positive role you have played towards the achievement of our goal.”
One of the numerous titles held by Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II reflects his profound understanding and capability to analyze and resolve the most intricate situations.
The title of King Solomon, said to be the wisest man on earth per the Holy Bible, has been bestowed on Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
According to Leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor, the Asantehene earned this title due to his success in resolving tense relations with the Akyem Abuakwa Stool
She recalled this appellation when she urged the Asantehene to mediate and improve strained relations with Dormaahene, Oseadeeyo Asagyefo Agyemeng Badu II.
Akua Donkor, who asserted that she is, by tradition, a wife to the Ashanti overlord, pointed to Otumfuo’s previous success in resolving tense relations with the Akyem Abuakwa Stool as evidence that he could similarly address the standoff with Dormaahene.
“You demonstrated a lot of wisdom in healing relations with the Akyem and that earned you the title of King Solomon, which is well deserved,” she said in an interview on Kofi TV.
Akua Donkor emphasized that if Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II successfully resolves the strained relations with Dormaahene Oseadeeyo Asagyefo Agyemang Badu II, it would further solidify his stature and be akin to achieving the wisdom and conflict resolution prowess attributed to King Solomon.
“The way you solved the Akyem issue, please do all it takes to fix the Dormaa issue… the Akyem issue was more contentious but you resolved it, so, please do same with the Dorrmaa case,” she added.
The recent dynamics between Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Dormaahene Oseadeeyo Asagyefo Agyemang Badu II have been marked by a series of events, including Otumfuo’s attendance at the funeral of Berekumhene. However, the participation of Dormaahene in the ceremony was blocked through a court process, leading to feelings of disappointment on his part.
Dormaahene expressed his distress over the situation, stating that he would not easily forget the turn of events. The reported court injunction preventing Dormaahene’s participation was apparently aimed at preventing potential clashes between their respective followers, especially given recent tensions regarding the constitutional powers of Asantehene and jurisdictional matters.
In the context of these events, it’s worth noting that in 2018, there were positive developments in the relationship between Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and Okyenhene. This included reciprocal visits, with Otumfuo visiting Akyem Abuakwa following an earlier visit by the Okyenhene to Manhyia. These meetings were seen by many as a positive step toward improving relations between the two influential monarchs.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has voiced serious concern over the escalating departure of citizens, particularly healthcare and educational professionals from Ghana.
Speaking at the 57th Congregation at KNUST, the Asantehene who doubles as the chancellor of the institution characterized this brain drain as a contemporary manifestation of colonization and emphasized the need to discourage such trends.
According to the Asantehene, those who seek greener pastures elsewhere are treated no way better than individuals who decide to stay in the country to make ends meet.
He noted that in foreign countries, the only jobs available for immigrants are cleaners and waiters, irrespective of one’s qualification. The Asantehene stated that such individuals with such educational background could become professors and obtain jobs that bestows dignity on oneself.
“The people here are much better that those living abroad and we have to be honest with ourselves. Because graduates and people qualified are not getting the work they want to do because they are taking to hospitals to clean and all those things while you are here, we accord you all the respect and dignity as a lecturer, professor and everything. So please let’s stay here and work,” the Asantehene said.
Brain-drain continues to rob Ghana of its human resources to help develop the country. Many citizens, per reports flee the country to work in a foreign country in order to earn wages in currencies that have more value than the cedi.
Meanwhile, some individuals have dismissed the suggestion made by the Asantehene. They argue that despite the Asantehene making such comments, his family members reside abroad and are not affected by the economic challenges in the country.
Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II has appealed to graduates not to leave the country in search of greener pastures.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed serious concern about the increasing emigration of citizens, particularly healthcare and educational professionals, from Ghana.
Addressing the 57th Congregation at KNUST, where he serves as the chancellor, the Asantehene characterized this phenomenon as a contemporary form of colonization and stressed the importance of discouraging such trends.
He highlighted that individuals seeking better opportunities abroad often face challenges, as their qualifications may not be recognized, limiting them to menial jobs like cleaning and waiting tables.
The Asantehene emphasized that these individuals, with their educational background, could attain dignified positions, such as becoming professors, if they chose to stay in the country.
Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II has appealed to graduates not to leave the country in search of greener pastures.
Ghana continues to grapple with the challenge of brain drain as its citizens seek opportunities abroad to earn wages in stronger currencies, depriving the country of essential human resources for development.
In response to the concerns raised by the Asantehene, some individuals have dismissed his suggestions. They argue that despite his comments, members of the Asantehene’s family reside abroad and are not directly affected by the economic challenges faced by those who choose to remain in the country.
Several Ghanaians, including Dormaahene Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II, have argued that the Chieftaincy Act’s exclusive mention of the Asantehene is biassed and requires correction.
Dormaahene Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II contends that there are other paramount chiefs in Ghana who hold similar positions as overlords like the Asantehene.
However, these traditional rulers are not acknowledged in the Chieftaincy Act, creating an impression that the Otumfuo is superior to all of them.
Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II has called for the inclusion of these paramount chiefs, such as the Yagbonwura, Yaa-Naa, Nayiri, and the Ga Mantse, who oversee other paramount chiefs, to be added to the Chieftaincy Act.
Historian and lawyer Yaw Anokye, commenting on this matter in an exclusive interview with GhanaWeb, expressed that these calls are not justified.
He explained that although the mentioned paramount chiefs are also overlords like the Asantehene, the Asantehene deserves specific mention in the constitution due to his superior powers and historical significance.
“They (the overloads) are placed under the same status but the Asantehene’s own is more conspicuous. Because he came from a broken nation so he is more recognised.
“They (the other overlords) are living in the shadows of the Asantehene, it would never be justified to put them in the same category. The name Asantehene there (in the Chieftaincy Act) covers the rest and it is enough,” he said.
He further stated, “Apart from him being on top of paramount chiefs, he also has the power to enstool paramount chiefs, he also has the power to destool paramount chiefs. And below the paramount chiefs, he (the Asantehene) goes to the level of divisional chiefs and Odikros in Ashanti and his influence is there and these others (the other overlords) exercise a few of those powers”.
He further mentioned that, excluding the Asantehene, every traditional stool in Ghana possesses kingmakers responsible for the enstoolment or destoolment of paramount chiefs.
“In Ashanti, theAsantehene can say this person I don’t accept this person to be a chief but in other parts of the country, once a candidate has been introduced by a queen mother and they have got their kingmakers’ (agreement), there is no power above the person who can say yes or no… In Ashanti, it is a different ball game; that is why we give him that singular recognition.”
Section 58 of the Chieftaincy Act, 2008 (Act 759) mentions the categories of chiefs in Ghana as follows:
(a) the Asantehene and Paramount Chiefs, (b) Divisional Chiefs, (c) Sub-divisional Chiefs, (d) Adikrofo, and (e) other chiefs recognised by the National House.
Historian and lawyer Yaw Anokye Frimpong has pointed out the reason behind the assertion that the chieftaincy of the Dormaa people was elevated to paramountcy status by an Asantehene.
According to the historian, in 1935, after 24 years of exile in the Seychelles, the British enabled the Asantehene, Prempeh I, to return upon which the Ashanti Confederacy was re-established following its breakdown.
“After 1896, when the Ashanti Kingdom had completely been destroyed, the confederacy broke down and they were asked not to enslave anybody and not to have any tributary state. So, the Dormaa people (the Jaman people) had their freedom,” he said.
But after its re-establishment, an indirect role, he said ensured Ashanti was placed together as one region, the western part being the Bono part.
“They (the Dormaas and the Ashantis) were under one region, so they were given one recognition and because of easy administration, the colonial masters gave an instruction to the Ashanti and to everybody.”
“So, for the Ashantis, Dormaa was under them, to the extent that the white man had made them recognise the Asantehene,” he added, stressing that “anytime the Asantehene seats in state, all the paramount chiefs under him would come, including the Dormaahene.”
He further noted that following the dissolution of the Ashanti Confederacy after Ghana gained independence, the people of Dormaa chose to operate independently, no longer bound by subordination to the Asantehene at the time.
“… it was not the Otumfuo that did that (left the Dormaa stool to paramountcy), it was not the Otumfuo… Every state that was part of the confederacy was a paramountcy. So, to start with, Dormaa was a paramountcy, but because you were part of the confederacy, you served the Gold Stool,” he reiterated.
Speaking during an Asanteman Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace on October 19, 2023, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, emphasized the importance of revisiting history to counter attempts aimed at distorting the historical narrative.
A video shared by Opemsuo Radio on YouTube featured the Asantehene discussing the induction of the predecessor of the current Dormaahene into office.
“Sampa is my town, Bono and Ahafo… Agyeman Badu (the first) took his oath here before going to assume his throne. He was a teacher here at Government Boys School. He swore in front of my uncle before assuming his position,” Otumfuo stated.
“It is because of these notorious ones that I am recounting this issue. What at all is it?” he emphasized before outlining a historical sequence of relations and how the royal politics has evolved over time.
In a response, Dormaahene Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II refuted the Asantehene’s statement, deeming it inaccurate. He clarified that the Dormaa stool had a centuries-old existence that preceded the Asantehene stool. Hence, the claim of an Asantehene elevating the then Dormaahene to a paramount chief was implausible.
The Dormaahene expressed concern that such assertions from the Asantehene were distorting the authentic history of the Dormaa people.
“I would speak to this issue because if I don’t, I would not be able to sleep… most people think that I am the one who causes the issue (between myself and the Asantehene). Some are even saying that if I don’t take time, I might cause a war. But if you are correcting your history, is it about fighting?
“… I want to tell every Ghanaian that we the people of Adiana are not from the Ashanti Kingdom. It is never true; it is never true. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the leader of the Ashantis, we beg him if he does not know history he should not talk. How can someone from Oyoko talk about the history of the people from Adiana?” he quizzed.
The Dormaahene added, “I want to place it on record with any contradiction that the stool of the people of Adiana in Dormaa existed 300 years before that of the Ashantis was established. So if there is to be an elevation, it is not us who are to elevate them,” he said.
He reiterated that he means no disrespect to Ashantis but if their leader continuously makes wrong claims about the people of Dormaa, he would reply.
“As for this issue, I am begging him (the Otumfuo) he should stop saying it. If he does not stop, I have already said this before, if he speaks 100 times, I would respond 101 times.”
Historian and lawyer Yaw Anokye Frimpong has refuted the claim that the chieftaincy of the Dormaa people was elevated to paramountcy status by an Asantehene.
He clarified that Dormaa’s stool, historically, existed as a state with its own paramount chief even before any potential involvement with the Asante Kingdom. While acknowledging Dormaa’s period of subjugation and enslavement by the Ashantis, Frimpong emphasized that the Dormaa stool retained its paramount status.
After the reformation of the Ashanti Confederacy, Dormaa once again came under the authority of the Asantehene. Frimpong reiterated that the Dormaa stool already held the status of paramountcy before this period.
“After 1896 when the Ashanti Kingdom had completely been destroyed, the confederacy broke down and they were asked not to enslave anybody and not also to have any tributary state. So, the Dormaa people (the Jaman people) had their freedom.
“Then in 1935 when Prempeh was brought back, the Ashanti Confederacy was re-established and because of indirect role, Ashanti was placed together as one region, the western part being the Bono part. AN expert in international relations, Farouk Al Wahab, has downplayed concerns regarding the intense public exchange between the Asantehene and Dormaahene over status and influence, suggesting that it is unlikely to escalate into a broader crisis.
According to Al Wahab, historical evidence indicates that such disagreements seldom escalate into confrontations, thanks to democratic safeguards and the overall awareness among Ghanaians, particularly the Ashantis and Dormaas.
Nevertheless, Al Wahab has advised Dormaahene Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II to show the necessary respect to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
He highlighted two key factors, central to Ghanaian culture, which should be considered: the age and the extent of the territory controlled by the Ashanti overlord.
“The Ashanti Nation has fought enough, it is the one kingdom in Africa aside eSwatini, that has arranged its affairs properly,” Al Wahab told Okatakyie Afrifa in an interview on Angel FM.
He stressed that no matter now Otumfuo is provoked, the Dormaahene still goes through his territiry when going to Dormaa from Accra, “has he ever been impeded or stopped? No. There is a civilization.”
He added: “Nothing will make some of Dormaahene’s own subjects agree with what he is doing…. Whatever you do, Otumfuo is a big brother to you, are you then using your position to abuse him? I will tell you no… that respect must be given, at least age wise.
“In the post-colonial era, conquests are over but look at age, size of domain and keep the politics at bay because you get it wrong by engaging in that. You are creating animosity,” the expert added.
In a recent address, the Otumfuo reiterated the historical context of how the Dormaa traditional area attained paramountcy, attributing it to a decision made by a previous occupant of the Golden Stool.

What at all is it?” he emphasized before outlinging a historical sequence of relations and how the royal politics has evolved over time.
Agyeman Badu I, referred to as an uncle of the current Dormaa chief, Agyeman Badu II, has recently engaged in a verbal exchange with the Otumfuo, questioning the extent of his influence.
In a recent interview with Ghanaweb, Dormaahene Osagyefo Oseadeayo Agyeman Badu II expressed his views, asserting, among other things, that there is ‘no King in Ghana,’ as the 1992 constitution does not contain any reference or provision for such a position.
Additionally, he has previously cautioned chiefs under the Dormaa jurisdiction against pledging allegiance to any paramountcy other than the one that bestowed upon them their throne.
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has initiated the “Heal Komfo Anokye Hospital Project” to address the pressing issues facing the health facility located in the Ashanti Region.
Seeking support from Members of Parliament, government officials, corporate bodies, and the public, the Asantehene aims to raise $10 million to alleviate the challenges faced by this crucial healthcare institution, which serves over ten regions in Ghana.
The hospital infrastructure’s decay has adversely impacted healthcare services, leading to frequent breakdowns of essential equipment. Various structural issues, such as abandoned projects, deteriorated buildings, leaking roofs, and extensive cracks, contribute to the challenges confronting this tertiary health facility.
Aging construction methods exacerbate ventilation issues, posing a significant concern for the hospital, which is over 70 years old. After an independent assessment, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II emphasized the urgent need to address these challenges to preserve the facility’s integrity.
“Not long ago, the new chief executive officer of KATH visited me and asked for my help. He informed me that the facility is however facing numerous challenges. I told him that I had even disguised myself and had visited the facility on two different occasions and that, I was aware of the numerous challenges.
“I came to the facility again to independently assess the situation. I told him that we would make sure we raise the needed amount to give this facility a facelift. This hospital serves 12 out of the 16 regions. The situation is embarrassing. There is not enough equipment but the doctors are doing their maximum best. This should be devoid of politics. We have to ensure the challenges are addressed. The facility will outlive all governments so we should do well to support this initiative”.
The health facility’s Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Otchere Addai Mensah, has underlined the pressing need for immediate attention, cautioning against a possible catastrophic structural failure if the issues remain unaddressed.
“The sad state of affairs is getting worse by the day and we are reaching a point where if nothing was done immediately the whole ‘GEE Blocks’ could soon suffer a catastrophic structural failure with dire consequences for healthcare services in the region and beyond. We should not forget that daily, our specialist OPD services alone are accessed by about a thousand patients from all over Ghana,” he said.
Upon achieving the fundraising goal and completing the initiative, the “Heal Komfo Anokye Hospital Project” will stand as a key legacy project in commemoration of the upcoming 25th anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s enstoolment as the Asantehene next year.
The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) is set to undergo a significant transformation with the introduction of a prestigious trophy in 2024.
The new trophy, generously donated by Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has been presented to Primetime Limited, the organizers of the National Science and Maths Quiz.
This announcement was made by Nana Akua Aboagyewaa Mensa-Bonsu, the Managing Director of Primetime Limited, during the 2023 grand finale held in Accra.
“We would be remiss of us not to say thank you also to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, for his support of the programme, having received us on three different occasions, warmly welcoming us to Kumasi on the occasions that we’ve been there, and even donating a cup to the programme starting next year. So next year there would be a more prestigious cup to fight for,” she indicated.
The current personalized bronze trophy was introduced five years ago after St. Peter’s SHS secured their third victory, and, in accordance with the competition’s rules, retained possession of the cup.
In the past five years, St. Augustine’s College (2019) and Prempeh College (2021) have each claimed the trophy once.
NSMQ record holders, Presec Legon, have clinched the bronze-crafted trophy three times (2020, 2022, 2023) and are set to retain it after their victory over Opoku Ware School and Achimota School in the 2023 finals.
Many NSMQ enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the introduction of the new trophy next year, and without a doubt, all schools will be intensifying their preparations to vie for the honor of becoming the first to claim this coveted prize.
Queen Mother of Fankyenebra in the Ashanti Region, Nana Akua Afriyie Owoabrempong, has indicated that the many netizens spewing false statements about Asanteman are doing so just to make ends meet.
In an interview on Opemsu TV, Nana Akua Afriyie Owoabrempong noted that such individuals will lose their daily bread should they decide to set the record straight and stop dragging the name of Asanteman and the Asantehene in the mud on social media.
“The Asanteman and the Asantehene are names that provide money when you just mention them. Today, all those misbehaving on social media are just after money. It is Asanteman that is now providing them ends meet. Let’s dare them to stop talking about Asanteman and see if their jobs will flourish. They can’t survive a week without mentioning Asanteman in whatever they do.”
Recently, there have been disagreements on the history of how the current Dormaahene, Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II, was inducted into office.
This comes after Asantehene Osei Tutu II noted there was the need to revisit history to combat efforts from some quarters to distort history.
Addressing his people at an Asanteman Council meeting at the Manhyia Palace on October 19, 2023, the Asantehene said “Sampa is my town, Bono and Ahafo… Agyeman Badu (the first) took his oath here before going to assume his throne. He was a teacher here at Government Boys School. He swore in front of my uncle before assuming his position.”
“It is because of these notorious ones that I am recounting this issue. What at all is it?” he emphasized.
In a video shared by Abanpredease TV on Sunday, October 19, 2023, the Dormaahene responded to the Asantehene’s claims.
He clarified that the Dormaa chieftaincy has a longstanding history that predates the Asantehene chieftaincy, making it implausible for an Asantehene to have elevated the then Dormaahene to a paramount chief.
He further emphasized the significance of addressing this matter as the historical narrative of the Dormaa people is at risk of being inaccurately represented by the Asantehene.
“I would speak to this issue because if I don’t, I would not be able to sleep… most people think that I am the one who causes the issue (between myself and the Asantehene). Some are even saying that if I don’t take time, I might cause a war. But if you are correcting your history, is it about fighting?
“… I want to tell every Ghanaian that we the people of Aduana are not from the Ashanti Kingdom. It is never true; it is never true. Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the leader of the Ashantis, we beg him if he does not know history he should not talk. How can someone from Oyoko talk about the history of the people from Aduana?” he quizzed.
The Dormaahene added, “I want to place it on record with any contradiction that the stool of the people of Aduana in Dormaa existed 300 years before that of the Ashantis was established. So if there is to be an elevation, is it not us who are to elevate them?”
“As for this issue, I am begging him (the Otumfuo) he should stop saying it. If he does not stop, I have already said this before, if he speaks 100 times, I would respond 101 times.”
The issue has sparked many divided opinions on social media.
The Ashyirem Royal Gate has chided Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, for his refusal to accept the nomination of Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong, the former Chief Executive of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), as the paramount chief of Offinso.
In a press statement, the Royal Gate accused the Asantehene of employing various tactics to obstruct Dr. K. K. Sarpong’s nomination, despite his widespread support among the people of Offinso.
The group further stated that the remarks made by Otumfuo while rejecting Dr. Sarpong’s nomination at a gathering held at the Manhyia Palace were deeply regrettable.
“It is important to note that Otumfuo’s pronouncements at some of the Asanteman Council sittings on the Offinso Stool Affairs are regrettable. There have been unsubstantiated allegations, among others, all in a bid to justify a course of action he wants to take. Recounting these here can be very embarrassing, to say the least.
“…One can justifiably conclude that Otumfuo is trying at ALL COST, to find a reason to block Dr. K. K. Sarpong’s nomination. But we think the Overlord of Asanteman should eschew bias and exhibit fairness towards the Ashyirem Royal family and Offinsoman. Truth is that since we revere Otumfuo, it would have been disrespectful to have challenged his pronouncements while he was sitting in State. However, it is only fair that very obvious errors which undermine the rights of the Ashyirem royals, including Dr. K. K. Sarpong, ought to be corrected,” parts of the statement read.
The group additionally alleged that the Asantehene employed coercive methods to compel the Offinsohemaa, the kingmakers of Offinso, and K.K. Sarpong into compliance.
“Is this not contrary to the very principles on which Asanteman was founded and built? Wherein lies the “ ka bi na menka bi” mantra? Asanteman should be fair to all of its citizens at all times. We humbly appeal to Otumfuo not to wage a personal vendetta on anyone so as to get his will to prevail. Rather, justice should be done to all manner of persons to honour the Golden Stool and in line with his own oath,” it said.
The group also asserted that the Asantehene lacked the authority to install a paramount chief (Omanhene).
“In line with Asante customs and traditions, which and often hammered by Otumfuo himself, he (Otumfuo) does not select and enstool any Omanhene. This is also the spirit of the Asante Confederacy, which protects the identity of each paramountcy. Otumfuo and Asanteman Council are invited to resolve misunderstandings in the process of enstoolment but not to undermine a process which has gone the full length without any blemish,” it added.
The demise of Nana Wiafe Akenten III, late Paramount Chief of Offinso has left a vacuum which has led to a litigation over who becomes his successor.
A former Chief Executive Officer of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Dr K. K. Sarpong, who was selected by the Queen Mother of Offinso with the support of some elders has been rejected by Otumfuo.
According to Otumfuo, it is rather wrong for the queen mother to present K. K. Sarpong as a candidate by virtue of royal bloodline while history and tradition tell otherwise.
Otumfuo has thus warned Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko and the elders of Offinso to put forth their candidate through the appropriate channel or risk having him rejected permanently.
But the Otumfuo’s declaration has not sat well with the Kingmakers of Offinso.

PRESS CONFERENCE BY ASHYIREM ROYAL GATE
Introduction On Tuesday, 24th October, 2023, Youth of Offinso held a press conference to support the nomination of Dr. K. K. Sarpong (by Nana Serwaa Nyarko and the kingmakers of Ofinso) as Omanhene of Offinso to succeed Nana Wiafe Akenten III. We of the Ashyirem Royal gate wish to thank Opanin Owusu Afriyie, the Spokesman, and other citizens who engaged the media. Offinsoman is grateful to you for shedding light on a number of pertinent issues for the benefit of our citizens, Ghanaians and the world at large.
Today, we the members of the Ashyirem Royal Gate have invited you here to inform you adequately about relevant matters of concern. We thank you all, particularly, Ladies and gentlemen of the media for honoring our invitation. You are heartily welcome. Now I proceed to address you in English whilst other family presenters will translate same to Twi after which we shall take your questions.
Due Process was used in selecting Dr. K. K. Sarpong We all know that Offinsohemaa and the kingmakers have selected one of the Royals, Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong, to ascend the Wiafe Stool in line with Asante customs and traditions. Indeed, in addition to the Kingmakers, stool elders have received the customary ‘aseda’ from the selected candidate. Currently, the kingmakers are Gyaasehene, Benkumhene, Nifahene, and Akyeamehene. Some sub chiefs such as Saamanhene and Asonahene, representatives of deceased kingmakers and Akyeame received ‘aseda’ as well even though they are not kingmakers. The said sub chiefs who are NOT kingmakers have but been holding themselves as such at Asanteman Council for unexplained reasons. Otumfuo’s Akyeame are aware of this fact but have turned blind eyes to it.
Acceptability of Dr K. K. Sarpong by Offinso Citizens and Residents An overwhelming majority (more than 90%) of the citizens and inhabitants of Offinso support the selection of Dr. Sarpong. It is a known fact that Offinso people want him as their Omanhene because they see in him a better future in terms of development, modernization, education, investments and jobs. Outcome of investigations into matters raised in Petitions and Approval by Asanteman Council.
We have taken note of the petitions filed to challenge the eligibility of Dr K. K. Sarpong by some persons who claimed to be Ashyirem Royals. Two of the grounds for the petitions, among others, were: (i) that Dr. Sarpong was not a royal of the Offinso Wiafe Stool; (ii) that the lineage of Dr. Sarpong was cursed by Nana Gyan Frempong.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II appointed a five (5) member Committee under the Chairmanship of Barima Tweneboa Kodua II, Omanhene of Kumawu, and which included Omanhene of Yamfo, .Omanhene of Ofuman; Kaase hene and Atwima hene to principally determine the blood line of Dr. K. K. Sarpong. He warned the Committee members not to be influenced by any monetary inducement and concluded with his famous saying that (i.e wo maame anwo a wo anwo wo).
In its findings, the Committee concluded that Dr. K. K. Sarpong is a Royal of the Wiafe Stool and therefore eligible to ascend it. When everybody was expecting Otumfuo to confirm Asanteman’s endorsement, surprisingly he said ‘3ny3 3hc na asem no nam koraa”. Rather, he said that there was a curse on Ashyirem Abusuapanin Atta Kwabena and therefore by extension, Dr. K. K. Sarpong. Fortunately, the Committee had dealt with the curse issue and had unanimously dismissed it.
We have reason to suspect that Otumfuo perhaps overlooked that aspect of the report or was not privy to it. Otherwise there would not have been any need to bring it up as a new dimension. The Committee concluded that two of the three petitioners who raised the curse allegation were not even Ashyirem royals and did not therefore have the capacity to bring their petitions. Must we entertain allegations of persons who did not even have locus in the case as the Committee concluded?
At Asanteman sitting in Council on 13th October, 2022 the findings of the Kumawuhene’s Committee were overwhelmingly endorsed by a majority of 21 out of 26 members who voted representing more that 80%. Notwithstanding the dismissal of the petitions by Nananom, Otumfuo is curiously using the curse in frustrating the enstoolment of Dr. K. K. Sarpong as Offinsomanhene.
Position of His Royal Majesty It is important to note that Otumfuo’s pronouncements at some of the Asanteman Council sittings on the Offinso Stool Affairs are regrettable. There have been unsubstantiated allegations, among others, all in a bid to justify a course of action he wants to take. Recounting these here can be very embarrassing, to say the least. The recordings of proceedings are available on YouTube for verification.
One can justifiably conclude that Otumfuo is trying at ALL COST, to find a reason to block Dr. K K Sarpong’s nomination. But we think the Overlord of Asanteman should eschew bias and exhibit fairness towards the Ashyirem Royal family and Offinsoman. Truth is that since we revere Otumfuo it would have been disrespectful to have challenged his pronouncements while he was sitting in State. However, it is only fair that very obvious errors which undermine the rights of the Ashyirem royals including Dr. K. K. Sarpong, ought to be corrected.
Intimidation of Queen Mother, Kingmakers and Dr. K.K Sarpong It appears that Otumfuo’s strategy has been to intimidate Offinsohemaa, Offinso kingmakers and Dr. K. K. Sarpong into submission. Is this not contrary to the very principles on which Asanteman was founded and built? Wherein lies the “ ka bi na menka bi” mantra? Asanteman should be fair to all of its citizens at all times. We humbly appeal to Otumfuo not to wage a personal vendetta on anyone so as to get his will to prevail. Rather, justice should be done to all manner of persons to honour the Golden Stool and in line with his own oath.
We wish to reiterate that the selection and nomination of Dr K. K. Sarpong was done within the norms of Asante customs and traditions from the presentation of drinks to Abusuapanin Atta Kwabena through to the Queenmother, Kingmakers and final acceptance and approval.
In line with Asante customs and traditions, which and often hammered by Otumfuo himself, he (Otumfuo) does not select and enstool any Omanhene. This is also the spirit of the Asante Confederacy which protects the identity of each paramountcy. Otumfuo and Asanteman Council are invited to resolve misunderstandings in the process of enstoolment but not to undermine a process which has gone the full length without any blemish.
Of serious concern also is the fact that Nananom Amanhene have not come to the rescue of Offinsohemaa and her elders in the face of the unjustified humiliation she is being subjected to. Nananom may have to take note that a similar unfair spectacle could befall them in their paramouncies if they fail to voice out their displeasure in this case.
Hatched Plot against Dr. K. K. Sarpong in a Leaked Video In a deliberate and desperate attempt to give credence to the ridiculous curse tag on Dr. K. K. Sarpong, one of the petitioners and others are captured in a video dramatizing the curse plot. For avoidance of doubt, we have the video in our possession, and it can also be accessed on Social Media.
It appears the issues concocted in the video which formed the basis of submissions of the petitioner before the Kumawuhene’s Committee, are those being held on to by Otumfuo. Unfortunately, it is an undisputed fact that the actors in the video are long-time friends and paternal relatives of Otumfuo. We do not want to believe that these people have had any influence on Otumfuo’s hardline position
Unfounded Bribery Allegations Accusations of bribery have been leveled against the Queen Mother, Kingmakers and elders of Offinso, Dr. K. K. Sarpong and even some Asante Chiefs by Otumfuo at some Asanteman Council sittings. This is unfortunate, and an attempt to give a dog a bad name and hang it. In Akan tradition (Asante inclusive), lobbying is part of the processes in selecting a chief whereby candidates approach Kingmakers and elders to get support.
It is customary for a candidate to present drinks and boamu ade3 (token cash) when he visits a chief, be he a kingmaker or not, to solicit for support and blessings. Such presentations cannot, obviously, be construed as bribery. We believe that all Asante Chiefs (including Otumfuo himself) went through similar processes before ascending their stools. Was this bribery? Why should similar acts by Dr K. K. Sarpong be seen differently? Is that meant to tarnish his image?
We know our Queen Mother is NOT selling the Wiafe stool, but rather getting a very formidable royal, Dr. K. K. Sarpong, to occupy it to ensure progress in Offinso. The calibre, credibility, principles and good standing of Dr. K. K Sarpong in Offinso, Beposo, Ghana and world at large speaks for itself. We are of the view that Dr. K. K. Sarpong has been unfairly treated regarding contrived allegations of bribery. We respectfully believe that our revered Asantehene has been misinformed in many aspects during the process.
Commendation of Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko Nana AMa Serwaa Nyarko, our Queen mother has to be commended instead of being molested, intimidated and vilified. Unlike many Queen mothers who select their own sons to be chiefs, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko is a different breed. She has made a bold and selfless decision in selecting Dr. K. K. Sarpong although she could have chosen one of her own two biological sons.
Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko has demonstrated her love for Offinso and its future progress by the choice she made despite her direct nephews being among the contestants. It is a rare decision which deserves praise instead of humiliation and vilification as seen at Asanteman Council. Once again, we thank Nana Serwaa Nyarko for thinking about the future of Offinso. Nanahemaa wonkwa so!
Conclusion In conclusion, we the Ashyirem royals find the curse tag misplaced. As Ashyirem royals we know that Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong is our blood as confirmed by the Kumawuhene Committee and overwhelmingly endorsed by the Asanteman Council. We take this opportunity to humbly request the Asanteman Council to reconsider the misplaced curse tag and the other reasons resulting in the Offinso chieftaincy stalemate.
We thank you for your attention in listening to our side of the story. God bless Offinso. God bless us all.
Elders of Offinso have expressed their disappointment in Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II over his interference in who becomes the next Offinsohene.
Opanyin Akwasi Afriyie, who engaged the press said “Offinso is highly disappointed in Manhyia over how the pending Chieftaincy dispute is being resolved by His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.”
“Offinso has noticed that Asantehene has taken advantage of the respect our Queen Mother has for him and therefore overexercising his powers on our Queen to harass and make her powerless,” he added.
Opanyin Akwasi Afriyie indicated that there were 18 contestants for the Offinsohene role and the Queen Mother finally settled on Dr K. K. Sarpong.
According to him, the kingmakers unanimously accepted the nominee in good faith, stressing that “there was nothing like an objection from kingmakers.”
He therefore told the Asantehene to back off as he, “Otumfuo has no power to enstool or destool any Omanhene” and “should allow the Offinsohemaa and her kingmakers to do their work as customs demand.”
Dormaahene, Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II, has pointed out a flaw in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, stating that including the name of the Asantehene in the constitution was an error.
He emphasized that the constitution’s failure to include other chiefs with equivalent status, such as the Yagbonwura and Yaa-Naa, is discriminatory.
These chiefs, like the Asantehene, have paramount chiefs under them, yet none of them were acknowledged in the Constitution.
“The other time I was reported to have said that I have issues with the name Asantehene. But I didn’t say that. What I said is that if you look at the Chieftaincy Act, Section 58 onwards, shows the various chiefs in Ghana: Paramount Chiefs (Omanhenes) and the Asantehene; Divisional Chiefs, Sub-divisional Chiefs and chiefs accepted by the National House of Chiefs.
“So, what I saying is that how did Otumfuo’s name get to ‘A’? If something is labelled ‘A’ does it mean that it’s greater? His name should not have been there in the first place, why did they put his name there?” he quizzed in the Twi dialect.
Oseadeyo Agyeman Badu II asserted that if the name of the Asantehene is included in the Constitution, then the names of all chiefs with paramount chiefs under them should also be added to the Constitution.
“What I am saying is that he is not the only chief who has Omanhenes under him in Ghana. Yagbonwura has paramount chiefs under him; my own father Nayiri, the leader of the Mamprugu Kingdom, has paramount chiefs under him; not only him, my own father Yaa-Naa has paramount chiefs under him, the Ga Manste has same.
“So, if you are adding people to the records (Constitution) who have paramount chiefs under them why did you not add the names of these four chiefs, I have mentioned? If you don’t add it is discriminatory. So, all I am saying is that if you will put someone’s name there then add the names of the four chiefs I have mentioned,” he said.
The Dormaahene further emphasized that there is no singular king in Ghana. He elaborated that if Ghana were to have a king, that individual should be the monarch of the entire nation, similar to the monarchy in the United Kingdom and Morocco, rather than being limited to ruling over a specific region of the country.
On Wednesday, October 25, 2023, a dramatic scene played out at the Manhyia Palace as the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, presided over a chieftaincy dispute involving the Anyeneyere stool in Atwima.
One of the parties involved, a woman, asserted her status as the queen mother of Anyenyere, arguing that she inherited the stool and lands from her late husband.
She alleged that the other party, Ofori, who is a descendant of the Otumfuo, was wrongfully taking over the lands she had given him.
The Asantehene and his sub-chiefs did not take kindly to her claims, prompting them to question her account. The Asantehene, visibly angered, accused the woman of fabricating lies and denied her any right to the land.
When the queen mother attempted to provide further explanations, the Asantehene’s irritation escalated. He sternly declared, “Stop acting foolishly because you are no queen. What kind of falsehoods are these?”
“You came here to lie; leave my face. You are not a queen,” he added.
Following this confrontation, the woman was escorted out of the Asantehene’s presence, and her slippers were removed, symbolizing her removal from the situation.
Kwaprahene Baffour Adugyemfu Kumani has been instructed to appear before Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II within two weeks over illegal sale of lands.
Years ago, Baffour Adugyemfu Kumani is said to have sold four plots of land to an individual in Kwaprah, where he serves as chief. The buyer obtained all the required documents for these four plots and then left for Australia, where he spent several years.
Upon his return, Nana Kwaprahene, the chief, claimed two of the four plots, asserting that he had been developing the land. He issued new documents for these two plots. Subsequently, the chief took legal action against the landowner to claim the remaining two plots.
In response, the landowner filed a formal traditional complaint against Kwaprahene during the Kumasi traditional council meeting, chaired by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on October 20, 2023, at Manhyia Palace. The case was related to a dispute over land and an alleged violation of the Great Asante Oath (Otumfuo Ntamkese).
There were also allegations of a double sale of lands. The landowner invoked Asantehene’s great oath, Otumfuo Ntamkese, against a private estate developer to prevent further development of the land. However, Kwaprahene instructed the estate developer to disregard the oath and proceed with the development, leading to the landowner’s formal complaint.
Due to this, he has been summoned. Failure to comply with this summons will result in the chief’s removal from office.
During a council session on October 20, 2023, the Asantehene accused the subchief of double-selling lands and violating the Great Asante Oath (Otumfuo Ntamkese). The final date for his appearance is expected to be on Friday, November 3, 2023, and he must present himself through the Akwamu division.
In a video shared by Opemsuo radio, a channel affiliated to Manhyia, a visibly angry Otumfuo states: “Kwaprahene knows why I’m looking for him. He knows I’m looking for him because of the land issue. That’s why he is dodging me with the excuse of sickness, he thinks he is smarter.
“Go and bring him. I will not take any excuse from him. When he was young he sold my land without giving me my money. I forgave him, you see the issue has returned to me’’ he stated.
On the deadline, the monarch stressed: “In two weeks, if he doesn’t show up, he should abdicate the throne and all the elders under him are also summarily sacked. Just two weeks, whatever his condition is, he should show up.
“And you the elders too, I have always cautioned you against his excesses and that you should caution him to change his ways (but you have failed),” he added.
Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has issued a summons to one of his subchiefs, Kwaprahene Baffour Adugyemfu Kumani, instructing him to appear before him within two weeks.

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, has made a firm commitment to prevent the Queen Mother of the Offinso Traditional Area, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, from selling the vacant Offinso Stool for financial gain.
Otumfuo has indicated that he is well-informed about the bribes offered to the Offinsohemaa and certain elders by a prospective candidate vying for the stool.
However, he asserted his unwavering resolve not to turn a blind eye to their ulterior motives.
“We definitely have to install a new chief; it is your mother [the queen mother] who has seized the stool for whatever reason but whatever she is seeking, she will not get it. I am telling you as the Asantehene.
“There is nothing said in Offinso that I am not aware of. I have only tolerated her because of her name, Ama Serwaa Nyarko and the relationship she shared with my mother. She is my senior mother; my mother liked her when she was alive and I have extended that love to her. I call her Abrewa.
“But for the current issues in Offinso, she has shown her true character for me to know she is not a good person. I will never allow anyone to sell off the Offinso stool,” he told leaders of the Offinso Traditional Council during a sitting at his court on Thursday, October 19, 2023.
Earlier this month, Otumfuo sent a strong caution to Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko over her conduct and attempt to impose a candidate on the Offinso Stool.
According to Otumfuo, he would never countenance any actions on the part of the queen and the elders that would undermine the tradition of Asanteman when it comes to the election and selection of chiefs.
“No one can arrogate powers that do not exist to themselves. None of the elders have the right to sell land when there is no Offinsohene, specifically when it is the Offinsohene who must sign off on the sale.
“There is no such power. You are to take charge until a new chief is installed and then account for your stewardship.
“So be very careful in Offinso. I am very aware of all the things you’re doing at Offinso. You’re friends with Pitin Abontengdomhene and you have recorded a tape… I am very aware of your plot and that you will go ahead and install a new chief when I travel by Monday.
“Offinso Hemaa you are aware of this; be very careful… I would never allow you to cause the downfall of Offinso,” Otumfuo stated through his linguists in an audiotape of his Asanteman court sitting shared by Royal Palace Multimedia.
The quest for a new Offinsohene
The passing of Nana Wiafe Akenten III, the late Paramount Chief of Offinso, has created a leadership vacuum and triggered a legal dispute regarding his successor.
Dr. K. K. Sarpong, a former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC), was chosen as a candidate by the queen mother with the support of certain elders.
However, Otumfuo has rejected this choice.
Otumfuo’s objection is based on the belief that the queen’s selection of K. K. Sarpong, based on her royal lineage, contradicts established historical and traditional norms.
In response, Otumfuo has issued a stern warning to Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko and the Offinso elders, urging them to follow the appropriate procedures for presenting their candidate.
Failure to do so may result in the permanent rejection of their chosen successor.
On GhanaWeb TV’s The Lowdown, the Dormaahene claimed a deliberate attempt to distort the history of the Asantes and Bonos.
He also accused Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II of working beyond his jurisdiction by attempting to promote some sub-chief under his umbrella.
Stating that there is no such title as a ‘King’ in Ghana, he expressed his determination not to let that happen,as he is aware of the historical facts.
“It’s been brought to our attention that the Otumfuo is encouraging some of the chiefs (SIC) under whom I am the president, encouraging them to make them omanhene. That prompted me to make that speech.
“I don’t speak for just speaking sake. First, the history between Dormaa and Ashantis, the history between Asantes and Bonos were being changed.
“I wouldn’t sit down when I know the truth for somebody to change the history. I won’t sit down… category of chiefs in Ghana. We have paramount chiefs and the Asantehene.”
“Even the name Asantehene, I have a problem with it,” he said.
He argues that, in accordance with the Chieftaincy Act of Ghana, the paramount chief holds the highest position among the hierarchy of chiefs, thus refuting the concept of kings within the country.
“According to their history, there were independent chiefs. If you go to Mampong, the land there does not belong to Otumfuo. I’m the only one who can say this.
“If you go to Kumawu, the land there does not belong to Otumfuo…But by a special magical powers from Komfo Anokye, they were all seated, and he decided to conjure…
“The question is that, who is he? Is he a chief or a king? The moment we became a unitary state, there is no king. People should learn to accept it.
“The point is that I am an omanhene, a paramount chief, can I create a paramount chief? So who is the Otumfuo? Who is he? People say he is a king, No!,” he told host Daniel Oduro.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has emphasized the growing prevalence of coups in Africa as a signal for African leaders to adeptly oversee their economies.
He emphasized that improved economic management has the potential to disrupt the cycle of poverty and unemployment, offering optimism for the youth to remain in Africa and actively contribute to the continent’s progress rather than seeking opportunities abroad.
“We have to do better in managing our economies to break the cycle of poverty and unemployment and give hope to our able youth to remain and work for the development of our continent instead of seeking the least opportunity to escape for greener pastures elsewhere…,” the Asantehene stated.
“No African leader can sleep happy so far as there’s an African boy willing to make the perilous journey of modern day migration,” he added.
Addressing the St. Andrews Africa Summit in Scotland, the Asante monarch underscored that as long as African youths continue to embark on perilous journeys abroad, no African leader can rest assured.
His counsel comes in the wake of recent coups in various African nations, including Gabon, Mali, Guinea, Chad, and Niger.
While unequivocally condemning coups and dismissing them as viable solutions to Africa’s challenges, he called upon African leaders to view these events as indicators of underlying issues in the democratic experiment.
The Asantehene proposed that these occurrences should trigger a thorough examination of the democratic frameworks and constitutional structures within African states, emphasizing the imperative for meaningful reforms and effective governance.
“I do not think it signals rejection of democracy as a system of governance but rather, it brings into question the structures we have built in our democratic system, and that, I will suggest reinforces the questions we’ve been raising about the constitutional arrangement of the African democratic state,” he stated.
Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has spoken out against the recent wave of military coups across Africa.
The renowned monarch claims that coups are neither a solution to the current challenges the continent is experiencing nor a part of them.
Speaking at the St. Andrews Africa Summit in Scotland over the weekend, Otumfuo emphasized that using a gun was never a good idea, no matter what the situation.
“Let me make it categorically clear that regardless of the circumstances, I do not think that a military takeover offers the solution to the problems of our continent.
“There was a time when circumstances produced the notion that the gun was the solution, those times are over.
He asserts that there is no animosity, as both groups historically united.
These comments were made during a visit from Ga Mantse, Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, who informed him of the passing of the Ga State Queen Mother, Her Royal Majesty Naa Dedei Omaadru III, on December 26, 2022, in Accra.
Otumfuo noted his positive relationship with the late Ga Mantse, Boni Nii Amugi II, and a similar bond forming with his successor, Nii Teiko Tsuru II.
“I had a good relationship with Nii Amugi. When I was young, I used to visit him at Abelekpe when I stayed at Alago. I also somethings went to the palace at Kaneshie to visit him… I even visited him at the hospital when he was sick.
“I saying all this to let you understand that Gas and Ashantis are united, there is no enmity between us. My brother who has now taken over (the Ga Mantse) and I are also having a good relationship… We are continuing the good relationship we have had,” he said in Twi.

In his remarks, Otumfuo expressed gratitude to the Ga Mantse, whom he referred to as his brother, for the thoughtful gesture and the invitations extended. He also conveyed his condolences to Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II and the Ga community.
On Thursday, August 31, 2023, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II conducted the enstoolment ceremony of Nana Bona Kessetare II as the Abirahene, the chief of the Abira Traditional Area.
This significant event took place at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
It’s worth noting that this marks the second enstoolment carried out by the Asantehene in recent months, following the destoolment of five chiefs in the Ashanti Kingdom.
A video capturing the moment of Nana Bona Kessetare II’s enstoolment, shared by Kumasi-based Opemsuuo Radio, depicted him taking an oath of allegiance to the Asantehene, holding a sword as a symbol of his commitment to selflessly serve his people.
Before the oath-taking, the Asantehene offered counsel to the newly enstooled chief, emphasizing the values of truthfulness and loyalty to the Ashanti land.
Additionally, he called upon the Abirahene’s kinsmen to provide support in his new role, working together to enhance the well-being of the people of Abira.

Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has successfully installed a new Chief for Seikwa in the Tain District of the Bono Region.
The chieftaincy position had been vacant for a decade after the tragic murder of the then Paramount Chief, Nana Kwaku Dwoma Ankoana, in 2013.
In a video shared by the Royal Palace Multimedia, Nana Deborah Adjei II, the newly appointed chief, was seen taking an oath in the presence of the Asantehene.
During the enstoolment ceremony, Nana Deborah Adjei II was given a ceremonial sword, which he raised as a symbol of his allegiance to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
In his oath, Nana Deborah Adjei II pledged to serve the Ashanti Kingdom with the same dedication as his ancestors did.
The tragic incident that led to the vacancy of the chieftaincy occurred on November 4, 2023, around 8 pm when Nana Kwaku Dwoma Ankoana was shot and killed at close range, resulting in an atmosphere of mourning in Seikwa.
The youth in Seikwa expressed their grief by wearing red armbands and chanting war songs in response to the unfortunate incident.
Overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has expressed a candid and emotional view about the performance and recent conduct of management of popular Ghanaian football club, Asante Kotoko.
It is a well established fact that the Asantehene holds the team dear to his heart; however, he has expressed disappointment regarding recent developments concerning the club.
“Kotoko is the only institution embarrassing my stool,” he said, having taken a tour of Kotoko’s Adako Jachie training facility project, which is still under construction.
Kotoko comfortably won the league in the 2021/22 season with Prosper Narteh Ogum in charge of the club as manager.
However, the former WAFA boss surprisingly parted ways with the club before the start of last season and was replaced by Burkinabe coach Seydou Zerbo.
Although Zerbo made a bright start to life as Kotoko manager, things began to fall apart midway through the season, which led to his sack.
The Porcupine Warriors went on to endure a disappointing campaign that saw them end the last season in fourth place.
The club has also accumulated substantial debts, totaling millions of Ghana Cedis. According to the Asantehene, these debts were primarily accrued from hotel expenses, among other expenditures.
“The current debt is from hotel expenses, players salaries and wages – which have been accrued also from the last two months adding June and July,” he said, as quoted by Joy Sports.
“So we have this debt to clear, before also finding a way around player recruitment. As for you [Kotoko], you are the only ones disgracing me,” he added.
He further admonished the club, especially its management to eschew individualism and put the interest of the club first as this is the most certain path to foster the growth of the team.
Subsequently, the Asantehene revealed the formation of a four-member Interim Management Committee. The committee comprises Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awua, the Kontomponiaferehene, former Black Stars coach James Kwesi Appiah, newly-appointed Kotoko coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, and Emmanuel Newton Dasoberi, who will serve as the administrative manager.
Chairman of the National Circles Council (NCC), Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Christopher Damenya, has said that the Owner and Life Patron of Asante Kotoko, has made a firm commitment to revamp the Adako Jachie Complex, currently serving as the club’s training facility.
The existing state of the complex falls short of the standards expected for a club of Kotoko’s prestige. However, the King is resolute in his determination to elevate it into a facility that befits one of the top football clubs in Africa. His resolve to take action was evident during his visit to the complex on a Saturday.
During a meeting with the club’s legends and fans at Manhyia on the preceding Friday, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II pledged to personally visit Adako Jachie the following day. As promised, he toured the facility, becoming acquainted with the challenges faced by the club.
Accompanied by the club’s representatives, he was given a comprehensive tour of the complex, during which the plans for its renovation were shared, and they sought support for the ambitious project.
In response to the situation and the aspirations of the club, the Asantehene expressed his commitment to spearheading the reconstruction of the Adako Jachie Complex, aiming to enhance its facilities significantly. With the King’s backing, Asante Kotoko looks forward to an upgraded and state-of-the-art training facility to support the club’s continued success.
“We took Him around and exposed our challenges to Him,” Christopher Damenya told Kumasi-based Akoma FM.
“He (Otumfuo) promised to rebuild the AJ project and make it more befitting, so He has taken the architectural design, very soon we will all witness the Adako Jachie project from a different perspective,” he added.
While Asante Kotoko’s administration is being reorganized, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has created an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to manage the club’s operations.
They are Kontomponiaferehene, Nana Apinkra Akwasi Awua, a chartered accountant, Kwesi Appiah, a former Black Stars coach, Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum, a former club coach, and Emmanuel Dasoberi.

In 2009, the issue of multiple land sales caused the destoolment of a prominent chief, Nana Kofi Agyei Bi III, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.
This case marked a significant moment at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi.
The allegations against Chief Nana Agyei Bi were brought forward by 12 individuals, including popular actor Kofi Adu, known as Agya Koo. They accused him of engaging in multiple land sales. After careful deliberations, the plaintiffs’ claims were upheld during the proceedings held at the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC).
Following the ruling, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, announced the destoolment of Nana Agyei Bi. Agya Koo, during the meeting at the Manhyia Palace, revealed that he had purchased four plots of land from Nana Agyei Bi for a hotel project, only to discover later that the land had been sold to others.
Numerous victims who appeared before the KTC also shared their grievances, alleging substantial financial losses due to the chief’s actions. Furthermore, it was revealed that Nana Agyei Bi had caused the demolition of a building on one of the disputed plots.
Although the affected individual had already taken Nana Agyei Bi to court over the matter, the chief denied responsibility for the demolition before the meeting at the Manhyia Palace.
However, during the gathering, he sent an apology through the Omanhene of the Manso Nkwanta Traditional Area, Nana Bi Kusi Appiah, admitting his role in the building’s demolition and acknowledging his impending court appearance.
Prior to announcing the decision to destool the chief, the Asantehene expressed his disappointment in Nana Agyei Bi’s actions, particularly his dishonesty toward the Asantehene himself.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu said he had heard about all that was going on in Atwima which implicated the chief in various issues.
He expressed regret that Nana Agyei Bi had misapplied the authority given him, for which reason he had to be destooled. The Asantehene also slated that the chief did not show any respect to his elders and was even at loggerheads with the queen of the area.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has been urged to intervene and complete the hospital’s stalled infrastructure projects by Professor Otchere Yaw Addai-Mensah, the hospital’s chief executive officer.

He made this call while he [Professor Addai-Mensah] and the hospital’s management team paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene in his palace at Manhyia.
According to the report, Prof. Addai-Mensah informed the Asantehene that the construction of the hospital’s Maternal and Baby Unit (MBU), as well as the Sickle Cell and Blood Transfusion Centre, which was being funded by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), had come to a halt.
The CEO noted that neither projects had seen any activity for about a year, and he appealed to the Asanteheneto step in to see to it that the projects were completed.
Professor Otchere Yaw Addai-Mensah was accompanied by the Board Chairman, Nana Effah Appenten, all members of the hospital’s board, the Bompatahene, Maxwell Opoku Agyemang, Charles Dontoh and the Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, Prof. Daniel Ansong.
The chief of Antoa,Nana Owusu Agyeman I, has been destooled by the ruler of the Ashanti Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Nana Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
According to multiple palace sources, the Asantehene ruled against the 96-year-old and ordered his destoolment as the chief of Antoa during a judicial hearing on Monday, May 29, 2023, at the Manhyia Palace.
Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman, who had held the position of Antoahene for two decades, is reported to have violated customary procedures by appointing his nephew to take over his reign while he is still alive.
After being confronted by his kinsmen and elders who suggested that he should have sought the permission of the King before taking such action, he allegedly denigrated the Asantehene.
Following Otumfuo’s ruling on Monday evening, official rites for the destoolment of Nana Kwame Owusu Agyeman were immediately set into motion in the town of Antoa.
The chief is also alleged to have been charged for various improper acts including alleged multiple sale of lands.
The 2023 Green Ghana Day has been officially launched in Kumasiby the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The event, scheduled for June 9, 2023, aims to encourage all Ghanaians and residents to actively participate in the national tree planting initiative.
He said the Green Ghana Day presents an opportunity to show patriotism, exhibit our commitment to the protection of our forest resources, and to demonstrate our resolve to leave our children with a richer and greener Ghana.
The Asantehene lauded the government for initiating the Green Ghana Project. He underscored the importance of trees to environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and the survival of the planet.
He said it was because these benefits that he committed to plant some 2.5 million trees towards the protection of Lake Bosomtwe, in the Ashanti Region.
The Green Ghana Day was first launched by Government in 2021, under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, as part of an aggressive afforestation and reforestation agenda, to restore the lost forest cover of the country.
The maiden edition targeted to plant five million (5,000,000) trees, but over seven million (7,000,000) trees were planted. Last year, over twenty-six million (26,000,000) trees were planted, exceeding the target of twenty million (20,000,000).
The Asantehene bemoaned the wanton destruction of forests due to illegal mining and illegal logging. He said chief and members of the local communities cannot feign ignorance about those involved in this destruction. He promised to drive around the Ashanti Region and call all chiefs whose lands have been degraded to come and answer.
“Government cannot do it alone. We must all get involved and support Government to come to grips with these matters,” Otumfuo said.
On his part, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, said over years, there has not been any concerted effort to restore our lost forest cover.
He said between 2010 and 2015 alone, the country lost one hundred and sixty thousand, two hundred and ten hectares (160,210 ha) of forest. But between 1963 and 2016, only one hundred and fifty-seven thousand, three hundred hectares (157,300 ha) of forest was cultivated.
The Minister said even though government has, since 2017, been taking several measures to restore our lost forest cover, the Green Ghana Project was necessary to create enhanced national awareness of the necessity for collective action towards restoration of degraded landscapes in the country, inculcate values of planting and nurturing of trees in our citizens, particularly among the younger generation, mitigate climate change and beautify communities and the environment.
He thanked all those who have supported the Programme for the past two years and reiterated the call for all residents in the country to come out in their numbers to support the tree planting exercise on June 9, 2023.
Speaking at the launch of the third edition of the Green Ghana Day, the chief executive officer of the Forestry Commission, John Allotey said, for the past two years, Ashanti Region has been planting the most trees on Green Ghana Days.
He said over eighty-one percent of the trees planted in 2021 have survived while seventy-two percent (72%) of the those planted last year have survived.
The event was also attended by the Chairman of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Council as well as the Vice Chancellor of the University.
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has held talks with the British Museum (BM) regarding the repatriation of regalia seized from the Ashanti kingdom following the Battle of Amoaful in 1874.
During his working tour to London last week, Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II also sought avenues for modern cultural cooperation, including administration and technical support for the Manhyia Palace Museum.
The Asantehene was welcomed by Dr. Hartwig Fischer, the Museum Director, Dr. Jonathan Williams, the Deputy Director, Sam Nixon, the Head of the Africa Department and Curator, and Julie Hudson.
Subsequently, the Asantehene emphasized that the Manhyia Museum is a thriving institution that generates revenue. He noted that, like other prominent museums, it occasionally requires additional collections to attract visitors and facilitate expansion.
However, the repatriation of Ashanti regalia has been a subject of protracted negotiations, despite being in violation of ancient British law.
Dr. Fischer, who led the negotiations on behalf of the British Museum, described the visit as significant and assured the Asantehene that structured legislation would be employed to address his requests.
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) will be reviewed in a timely manner for the loaning of artefacts for the Asantehene’s silver jubilee in Kumasi in 2024.
Furthermore, the Museum agreed to collaborate with two of the Asantehene’s advisors, Malcolm McLeod, a former history professor and vice principal at the University of Glasgow, and the former keeper of ethnography at the British Museum, to research and establish a technical framework. Ivor Agyeman-Duah, a historian, museum economist, and development specialist, is also involved in this collaborative effort.
As the British Museum Act prohibits the permanent removal of artefacts from its collection, the ongoing technical discussions in London will address the legal implications. This includes a visit to the Manhyia Palace Museum and object authentication at the Museum for loan agreements.
The British Museum, under Dr. Fischer’s guidance, will support the anniversary and reopening of the Manhyia Palace Museum.
During the visit, the Asantehene was given a private tour of the current exhibition titled “Luxury and Power: Persia to Greece,” which focuses on the Greco-Persian Wars. In parallel negotiations, Dr. Tristram Hunt, Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), met with Mr. Agyeman-Duah in London. The Palace has confirmed that a bilateral agreement with the V&A will be signed before February 2024.
In commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the 1874 War, the V&A is developing a program proposal that will feature a collection of Asante regalia and involve collaboration between British and Ghanaian artists to create a memorial in London.
Additionally, next year will mark the 100th anniversary of the return of Asantehene Nana Agyeman Prempeh I from exile in the Seychelles after twenty-seven years. This event will also be commemorated.
It is worth noting that in 1874, Asantehene Otumfuo Opoku Ware II requested the return of regalia from the Director of the British Museum, Sir John Pope-Hennessy. This request eventually led to the major exhibition, “Asante Kingdom of Gold,” which was inaugurated by Opoku Ware II and the Duke of Gloucester and later travelled to the Natural History Museum in New York.
As a result of the British Museum’s training of museum directors in Kumasi and Ghana, in partnership with Manhyia at the time, a significant BM international program in Africa is now in place.
The discussions between the Asantehene and the British Museum signify a crucial step towards addressing the historical injustices of cultural appropriation and the repatriation of Ashanti regalia. The Ashanti kingdom treasures its regalia as important symbols of its cultural heritage and identity.
The Manhyia Palace Museum, under the leadership of the Asantehene, has been actively involved in promoting cultural exchange and preservation. The collaboration with the British Museum opens doors for further cooperation in areas of administration, technical support, and knowledge sharing.
Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has engaged the British Museum regarding regalia seized from the Ashanti kingdom following the Battle of Amoaful in 1874.
As part of his working visit to London, he also requested areas of contemporary cultural cooperation in the management and technical assistance with the Manhyia Palace Museum.
The Museum Director, the German art historian, Dr Hartwig Fischer, the Deputy Director; Dr Jonathan Williams and the Head of the Africa Department and Curator, Sam Nixon and Julie Hudson welcomed the Asantehene who later explained that the Manhyia Museum which is undergoing major restructuring and expansion is a living one and profit-making.
It needed, like all major museums, other collections to occasionally strengthen patronage and growth.
This he said, was notwithstanding the laws of antiquity in Britain even as long-time negotiations continued.
Dr Fischer who led the BM team in discussions described the visit as an august one and would work towards the Asantehene’s wishes through the structured laws.
A previous MOU would be reviewed on time for the loaning of items for the Asantehene’s silver jubilee in Kumasi next year.
Otumfuo with technical advisors-Ivor Agyeman-Duah and Malcolm McLeod
The Museum also agreed to study and work on a technical framework by two of the Asantehene’s advisors: the former Keeper of Ethnography at the BM and previous Professor of History and Vice Principal of the University of Glasgow, Malcolm McLeod.
He had in 1994 led the establishment of the Manhyia Palace Museum. The co-technician of the framework is historian, museum economist and development specialist, Ivor Agyeman-Duah.
The technical discussions which started this week in London would also lead to visitations to the Manhyia Palace Museum, object identification at the Museum for loan agreements and other legal implications as the British Museum Act does not allow permanent removal of items from its collection.
The BM led by Dr Fischer would also be involved in the Manhyia Palace Museum reopening and anniversary.
The Asantehene was given a private tour of the current exhibition, Luxury and Power- Persia to Greece which centres on the Greco-Persian Wars.
On behalf of the Palace, the DailyGraphic has also confirmed that Mr Agyeman-Duah continued discussions with the Director of the world’s leading art and design institution, the Victoria and Albert Museum’s (V&A), Dr Tristram Hunt in London.
A bilateral agreement with the Palace would be signed before February 2024.
The V&A which has a collection of Asante regalia is developing a programme concept for next February which would mark the 150th year of the 1874 War. A group of Ghanaian and British artists would jointly be engaged in a memorial in London.
Next year also marks the 100th anniversary of the return of exile from Seychelles of Asantehene Nana Agyeman Prempeh I after twenty-seven years.
In 1976, the late Asantehene Otumfuo Opoku Ware II on the centenary of 1874 made a request (return of regalia) to the Director of the BM Sir John Pope-Hennessy who together with the Trustees later organized the major exhibition, AsanteKingdomofGold which was opened by Opoku Ware II and the Duke of Gloucester which also travelled to the Natural History Museum in New York.
The BM as part of the cooperation with Manhyia at the time, trained museum managers in Kumasi and Ghana which has today led to the major BM International programme in Africa.
Ghanaian students have been granted a scholarship opportunity to attend the renowned University of Memphis in Tennessee, USA, thanks to the efforts of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
Under the deal, qualified Ghanaian students will travel to Memphis University to undertake their undergraduate, master’s and PhD.
Up to 70 per cent of the opportunity is reserved for students who will undertake courses in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
The Ghana Scholarship Secretariat and the authorities of the University of Memphis last week signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to this effect at the school, sealing the deal that spells out the modalities for the implementation of the scholarship.
Special
Briefing the Daily Graphic upon his return from the USA, the Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Dr Kingsley Agyemang, noted that the Asantehene last year, as a special guest to the famed Memphis in May Festival, made a request for scholarship for Ghanaian students.
He said although the initial target was for only students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), the Asantehene later called for its expansion to cover more Ghanaian students.
“So a memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat and the University of Memphis which will allow Ghanaian students to undertake their undergraduate, master’s and PhD at the university. This deal, I must confess, is a blessing for Ghanaians students,” he said.
Dr Agyemang said because the city of Memphis was home to some global brands, the secretariat was working out the possibility for Ghanaian students who got the opportunity to study at the university to undertake their internship there in those industries in a bid to ‘use one stone to kill two birds’.
“It is important to underscore that the city of Memphis is the headquarters of so many globally acclaimed companies such as Fed Ex, Autozone, Sedgwick Jone Incorporated, International Paper, Baptist Memorial Healthcare, First Horizon National Incorporated (NYSE: FHN) and Mueller Industries,” Dr Agyemang said.
“What this means is that academics and industry will gradually be bridged as these companies will provide essential internship programmes for Ghanaian students. Discussions between these companies and the Ghana Scholarships Secretariat have started,” he added.
He said this formed part of the nation’s drive to create the creative, innovative, knowledgeable and experienced human resource that would lead the charge in accelerating the industrialisation agenda to position the nation for accelerated development.
Asked about when Ghanaians students would be able to fly to Memphis to start their studies under this agreement, Dr Agyemang said very soon the opportunity would be advertised for prospective students to apply and those who made it would commence their studies at the Memphis University from September 2023.
Dr Agyemang commended the Asantehene for brokering such a crucial deal for Ghanaian students, particularly for those into the area of STEM, adding that “Otumfuo has shown leadership and demonstrated how he values education. This scholarship is not for just Asanteman but Ghana as a whole”.
“I must also say we are grateful to the former Minister of Education, now Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for his interest in this scholarship and the necessary inputs he provided us to make it successful,” he said.
After the MoU, the Ghanaian delegation, led by Dr Agyemang, toured the university to inspect lecture theatres, laboratories, hostels and other facilities.
The Ghanaian entourage also included the Head of International Relations & Partnerships, Richard Gyamfi; the Head of Treasury, Ghana Embassy, Washington D.C., Janet Koranteng, and a member of the Scholarship Review Committee, Nana Owiredu Wadie.
The University of Memphis was represented by the Interim Provost, Dr Abby L. Parril; the Executive Vice -President and Chief Operating & Financial Officer, Raaj Kurapati; the Vice Provost, and International Affairs, Dr Balaji Krishnan, and the Executive Director, Centre for International Education Services, Rebecca Laumann.
The chief of Agric Nzemaa inKumasi, Nana Nkansah Boadu Ayeboafo, has expressed disbelief at which some individuals do not recognise and appreciate the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
According to him, individuals who “do not cherish such beauty and recognition only exhibits an attitude of a person who is possessed by witchcraft”.
The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has recently been accorded by foreign dignitaries since his arrival at the Buckingham Palace.
According to Nana Nkansah Boadu Ayeboafo, foreign dignitaries are inspired with awe by the beauty and value of Ghanaian culture and tradition.
“They are even surprised that as a country we have such rich culture and tradition but we do not celebrate it enough” He noted, stressing that the time has come forGhanaians to eschew bitterness and rally behind things that bring progress and development.
Nana Nkansah Boadu further urged Ghanaians to rather focus on more things that unite us and bring development to the country.
“The Asantehene is always thinking about the interest of the development of the country; he has always used opportunities accorded him not only for his subjects but also for the entire country, why should such a person be hated instead of being celebrated ” He questioned.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II celebrated his 73rd birthday in London while he and his wife Lady Julia were present for King Charles III’s coronation.

The former president was surrounded by chiefs and attendees of the occasion in a video of his arrival at the event that Opemsuo Radio posted.
