Video: How Otumfuo arrived at 3rd 2023 Akwasidae

On Sunday, April 30, 2023, the Ashantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, his sub-chiefs, and the Ashanti people marked their third Akwasidae for the year 2023.

Several dignitaries, including former President John Dramani Mahama, attended the vibrant event.

The Asantehene celebrated the 24th anniversary of his coronation as the King of the Ashanti Kingdom just before the 3rd Akwasidae.

The Asantehene made his customary grand entrance to the festivities in a palanquin festooned with Kente cloth and gold ornaments, complete with pageantry, drumming, and dance.

Audio-visuals shared by Opemsuo Radio showed the Ashanti King majestically riding in a palanquin as he danced and waved at his subjects and guests.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II can also be seen in a video displaying his Adowa dance skills when he stepped down from the palanquin.

The Akwasidae festival commemorates the time that the Ashanti Golden Stool was magically brought down from heaven and is celebrated once every six weeks on a Sunday.

Every paramount chief in Asanteman (Ashanti Kingdom) observes the Akwasidae in his jurisdiction, however, the main event is held at the Manhyia Palace, in Kumasi.

There, the Asantehene (Ashanti king) sits in a state for his subjects and other visitors to pay him homage.

  • 2023 Green Ghana Day to be launched by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

2023 Green Ghana Day to be launched by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

This year’s Green Ghana Day will be launched by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The event will be held at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on Friday, June 9, and on the theme: “Our Forests, Our Health“.

The Government has approved a budget of GHȼ2.5 million for this year’s exercise.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Samuel Abu Jinapor who announced this at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday, April 26 said it intended to plant 10 million seedlings across the country.

The Green Ghana Project was launched by President Akufo-Addo in 2021 as part of the government’s aggressive afforestation and re-afforestation programme to restore the degraded landscape.

So far, about 31 million seedlings have been planted nationwide with an average survival rate of 81 and 72 per cent in 2021 and 2022, respectively.

“This year, we have revised our target downwards to 10 million trees. This will give us space to devote some resources and attention to the trees planted over the last two years, while not losing momentum on our quest to restore our degraded landscape,” Mr Jinapor said.

He expressed the hope that it would receive the usual massive support from the public to build upon the successes achieved in 2021 and 2022.

He urged the media to carry the message across and mobilise support toward the success of the project.

The Lands Minister appealed to all well-meaning Ghanaians, including chiefs and queen-mothers, religious and faith-based organisations, civil and public servants and students, to support the Ministry to make this year’s Green Ghana Day a success.

“As we did last year, we have compartments for adoption by private institutions, and we will brand these compartments with their names and logos,” he said.

Seedlings will be made available at the Ministry, District Offices of the Forestry Commission, and at various designated locations for collection on the Day.

The Minister said details of the seedling distribution and pick-up points will be published in due course.

“Trees play a crucial role in our survival and the survival of planet earth…When the last tree dies, the last man dies,” he added.

A Deputy Minister of Lands, in charge of Forestry, Mr Benito Owusu-Bio told the media that it had so far secured 7.5 million seedlings and expected to receive the remaining 2.5 million from donors.

The Forestry Commission provided three million seedlings, the Mineral Commission supplied three million, while Plantation Fund Board and Rotary clubs and churches have supplied 500,000 and one million seedlings, respectively, he said.

  • The ‘hated’ Asante traitor Kwame Tua who kidnapped an Asantehene’s wife

The ‘hated’ Asante traitor Kwame Tua who kidnapped an Asantehene’s wife

Kwame Tua was despised in the Ashanti community, despite the fact that the story is obscured by numerous narrations from various narrators.

Kwame Tua was a favorite of the British because he always provided them with information on his people, regardless of his specific position in the kingdom at the time of the colonial masters.

Referred to as a traitor of the Ashantis, it is even believed that, to date, the mentioning of that name is prohibited, especially within the confines of the kingdom of the Asantehene.

In one of the many accounts about the man Kwame Tua, it is said that he revealed secrets about his people to the British and was very instrumental in the arrest and capture of the warrior queen mother of Ashanti, Yaa Asatewaa.

This, it is believed, he was able to achieve with the support of a certain Kwasi Apea Nuamah, believed to be his elder brother.

A 78-year-old man, for instance, who called into a radio discussion on Kwame Tua, on Kumasi-based Nhyira FM, gave his own accounts of what he knew about the man.

He described how powerful Kwame Tua became, so much so that while he did not have any particular work that he did, he became so feared that he even took away one of the wives of an Asantehene.

“Kwame Tua had no specific work he was doing but he had the favour of the Whites because he was their informant, telling them about everything that was happening within the Ashanti circles.

“Due to this, he and one Nuamah became so powerful that nobody could speak about them. There was even a time that Kwame Tua succeeded in collecting one of the wives of the Asantehene because he had the backing of the Whites,” he narrated.

The elderly man, whose name was not mentioned on the program, also corroborated the claims that Kwame Tua was instrumental in the arrest and capture of Yaa Asatewaa.

He added that this was done with support from his brother, Nuamah, after which the two were rewarded by the British colonialists upon the exile of Prempeh I.

“In fact, it was through Nuamah and Kwame Tua that information got to the Whites about the whereabouts of Yaa Asantewa, and she was captured,” he narrated.

“How all of these benefitted him was that when Asantehene Prempeh I was captured and sent away, all of the Ashanti stools were left unattended to. Nuamah told the Whites that he wanted the position of the Linguist to the Otumfuo. Kwame Tua, on the other hand, asked for one of the seats of the royals. By the way, Nuamah and Kwame Tua were siblings,” he added.

GhanaWeb cannot, however, confirm the truths of the above accounts on Kwame Tua, although there are several academic and personal accounts on the name, and his brother, Nuamah, on the internet.

I was instructed to swap out my jeans for kente cloth – Idris Elba on meeting Asantehene

A British actor, Idris Elba who recently visited Ghana has described his trip to the Manhyia Castle as intriguing.

When filming his documentary on gold, the actor claimed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that he was shocked to receive an invitation to see Asantehene, who is a major fan of his.

He was invited to join Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at the first Akwasidae of the year 2023 – a first for him.

I was told to change from jeans into kente cloth - Idris Elba talks meeting Asantehene

Idris Elba said “so I showed up in my jeans. They were like, no, ‘you got to wear this kente cloth’. It was a really fascinating day. I mean, it was beautiful and the tradition was rich.”

He noted that he was nervous when meeting the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for the first time especially since he was not familiar with how to keep the Kente cloth stable.

Idris Elba told Stephen Colbert that “so when you meet the king, typically what you have to drop the kente cloth shoulder down a little bit and then shake the King’s hand. It’s part of the tradition like a symbol of respect.”

The Luther actor said he was glad to not have had any mishap occur adding “I did my thing gently. It was actually a really beautiful time. I don’t mean to make fun of it. It was very beautiful.”

  • Asantehene recalls how his uncle donated land for the Kumasi Central Mosque in 1954

Asantehene recalls how his uncle donated land for the Kumasi Central Mosque in 1954

The history of the site on which the Kumasi Central Mosque was built in 1954 has been provided by the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

In his address at the opening of the renovated facility on February 3, 2023; the Asantehene recounted that it took his uncle Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh II to identify a plight of the growing Muslim population and move to address same.

The only mosque for Friday prayers at the time had outgrown the Muslim population and worshipers were lined up outside the facility when the then Otumfuo was being driven by.

“The history of the (Kumasi Central) Mosque underscores the empathy between the Golden Stool and the Muslim community. The first Mosque was built in 1905 on land in front of the palace of the Sarikin Zongo (Zongo Chief) overlooking the Zongo Police station.

“It remained the only mosque in Kumasi used for Friday prayers until 1954. It is said that on a Friday in 1954, my uncle Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh II was driven past Asawase and saw the multitude of Muslims laying their prayer mats on dusty roads around the Mosque for their Friday prayers.

“Back at Manhyia, he summoned the Sarikin Zango Ahmad Baba and offered him a vast plot of land at Asawase for the building of a fitting mosque to accommodate the growing Muslim population,” he detailed.

He continued with how the said land was later swapped and the unintended political consequences that resulted:

“City planning considerations later led to the plot at Asawase being swapped for a new site at North Zongo, with the former becoming the Asawase market.

“In the febrile political atmosphere of the time, this noble gesture of the Asantehene was twisted and interpreted as an attempt to mobilise the Zongo community against the Government.

“It led to the deportation of Ahmad’s Baba and other Muslim leaders and subsequent acts which literally amounted to the seizure of the assets of Asanteman,” he lamented.

Otumfuo, Chief Imam grace reopening of renovated Kumasi Central Mosque

The Asantehene was in attendance Friday, March 3, 2023; when the newly reconstructed mosque was inaugurated.

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, handed over the facility whose expansion he financed, to the Mosque’s committee after it was commissioned amidst excitement.

The commissioning ceremony was graced by the Asantehene along with the national Chief Imam Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu and a host of distinguished dignitaries including Ministers, MPs, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, regional Imams, Zongo Chiefs, as well as top Muslim and Christian clerics.

The arrival of the Asantehene to the grounds in a video shared by Manyhia-owned Opensuo TV showed the respected chief moving from his palace to the venue with a fleet of cars amid police escort.

He is in his usual flashy black saloon vehicle with the flag of the Ashanti State and upon arrival at the venue is met by his royal retinue as well as some of the other invited guests at the premises.

The mosque was officially commissioned by the Vice President, the Chief Imam and the Asantehene in time for Jummah (Friday congregational) prayers.

Otumfuo entreats NPP to elect a flagbearer with national interest in mind

Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritize the national interest over partisanship when choosing a flagbearer.

He says the party should make a choice competent enough to serve as President.

NPP flagbearer aspirant, Francis Addai-Nimoh, in the company of his campaign team and supporters, paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene at the Manhyia Palace.

The visit was to make clear his intention of contesting NPP’s flagbearership.

The Asantehene says though the election is internal, it has an impact on the country as a whole.

He wants aspirants to, therefore, foster peace by running clean campaigns devoid of insults.

“I am advising you to do a clean campaign ahead of the primaries,” he said.

He also urged the NPP delegates to choose a candidate that would be accepted by the mass Ghanaians.

The former Member of Parliament for the Mampong Constituency made his first attempt in NPP’s flagbearer race in 2014.

He came third among seven contestants in the primaries.

Mr. Addai-Nimoh was, however, out of the government formed after the party won elections in 2016.

For the reason, he believes his candidature is needed to win the NPP power in 2024.

He appealed to party delegates to vote for a new candidate to head the party in order to break the eight.

According to him, the party requires a fresh face who has not served in the present administration, who is spotless , and who can bring the party together in preparation for the 2024 general elections.

The award is in honour of the Asantehene’s significant contribution to the growth of the Anglican Communion.

The Cross of St Augustine is an award of merit from the Archbishop of Canterbury to members of the Anglican Communion who have made significant contributions to the life of the worldwide Communion.

  • Ghana Responsible Gold Mining Summit: Manhyia Palace to host in April 2023

The Summit is scheduled to take place at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region, on Tuesday, April 7, and Wednesday, April 8, 2023.

His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, is making efforts to guarantee that gold purchased from Ghana is mined and traded ethically.

To ensure that gold obtained from Ghana’s small-scale mining sector is responsibly mined and traded in accordance with international standards and best practises, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has committed to establishing the “Ghana Responsible Gold Mining Summit.”

His Majesty has demonstrated immense commitment to the eradication of illegal mining and promoting responsible mining, and at the Summit, he will work with stakeholders to ensure that interventions to halt environmental degradation are coordinated and fully supported.

The Summit is scheduled to take place on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 April, 2023 at the Manhyia Palace, Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, to precede the 24th Coronation Anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The Summit will be led by the Africa Responsible Mining in collaboration with E ON 3 Group and Ansong Askew Ltd. The event is supported by the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and its agencies, as well as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

Other stakeholders, including international market makers, will also provide some collaboration.

    Outputs

Outputs from the Ghana Responsible Gold Mining Summit will focus on aligning Ghana’s small-scale mining sector with the expectations of international markets.

This will include measures to increase transparency and accountability in the sector in line with international standards of responsible sourcing.

    Otumfuo’s commitment

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will work with the government of Ghana, traditional leaders, political leaders, and international stakeholders to ensure that gold sourced from the country is responsibly mined and traded.

His Majesty is committed to building confidence in the international community about transparency and accountability in Ghana’s small-scale mining sector.

The Asantehene’s quest for environmental protection and his abhorrence of illegal mining has been phenomenal. At various fora, he had minced no words about the need for Ghana to turn to responsible mining.

At a Regional Consultative Dialogue on Small Scale Mining, in Kumasi in May 2021, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II threatened to sanction chiefs within his jurisdiction who engage or assist in illegal mining activities.

Also addressing the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs in Kumasi on October 14, 2022, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, called out his sub-chiefs for not taking up the fight against illegal mining but rather, accepting monies from illegal miners thereby, making it difficult for their part to make any meaningful contribution to the fight against illegal mining.

Again, in October 2022, when the US Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, called on His Majesty at the Manhyia Palace, he touched on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s promise of putting his presidency on the line during the height of the war against the illegal mining menace and wondered why the President had even put his presidency on the line, and yet illegal mining was going on.

And at the last meeting of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs for the year 2022, held in Kumasi on December 14, His Majesty re-emphasized his quest to root out illegal mining from his domain, and went head to state that, his office will from next year (2023), summon chiefs whose lands have been destroyed by illegal mining, for questioning.

He warned that any chief who is unable to provide valid reasons would be sanctioned so that they will learn a lesson and protect their lands from illegal mining.

  • Asantehene initiates steps to address poor spatial planning

Lands and spatial planning engineers in the various local assemblies are to appear before the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs over the poor spatial planning of Kumasi.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, expects the professionals to be assertive in decongesting the city through proper planning.

He has asked the Ashanti Regional Minister to ensure the various town and city planning officers meet the House on the poor siting of structures.

Vehicular congestion and petty trading on pavements have choked parts of Kumasi, depriving the city of its beauty.

Despite the operations of satellite markets, business activities are mostly centered in the central business district.

At a meeting of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, Bantamahene, Baffour Amankwatia the VI, questioned the Regional Minister on the indiscriminate siting of temporary structures.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, blamed some assembly members for the congestion.

He is hopeful the second phase of the Kejetia redevelopment project will help ease congestion in the city.

The Asantehene however expects professionals in land and spatial planning to properly plan the city.

He has directed the Regional Minister to summon Metropolitan, Municipal and District planning officers to the next meeting of the House.

  • Asantehene to summon chiefs whose lands have been invaded by galamseyers

Paramount Chief of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has vowed to deal with any sub chief in the area whose lands have been completely occupied by illegal miners.

The Asantehene stated during a general assembly of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs that all traditional leaders who are directly complicit in the region’s illegal mining activities must be questioned.

“Next year, any chief whose lands have been invaded will have to be summoned and questioned. If we visit your land, and it has been destroyed by ‘galamsey’ activities, we will question why you watched unconcerned for the lands and water bodies under your custody to be harmed. And if you’re unable to give valid reasons, we will sanction you so you learn a lesson and protect your land from the havoc,” he noted.

His comment was in response to an appeal by chiefs in the Ashanti Region to be granted summoning powers to help in the fight against ‘galamsey.’

Addressing the House, Otumfuor, who was baffled by the rise of galamsey activities in the region, said that the chiefs shouldn’t stand by while unlawful mining activities devastate arable farmlands and water bodies.

He lamented the inability of the chiefs to control the canker and said that those who do not oppose illegal concessions have contributed to the never-ending struggle against “galamsey.”’

Illegal mining remains one of the biggest challenges the nation has had to deal with, despite various measures adopted by successive governments to curb the menace.

Ghana has, over the years, lost lots of its virgin forest, land resources, and water bodies to galamsey.

The current administration, led by President Akufo-Addo, launched the Operation Halt taskforce, also in an attempt to deal with galamsey.

However, little progress has been achieved due to the sea of corruption allegations against some members of the taskforce.

In a 2021 report aired by JoyNews, it was revealed that fully armed military officers provided protection to miners destroying the forest reserves of Manso in the Ashanti Region.

It is against this background that the Paramount Chief of Asante Mampong, Daasebere Osei Bonsu II, questioned the deployment of security forces to offer unauthorised protection to unlawful mining operations in several forest areas.

“Some chiefs are worried. They sometimes visit illegal mining sites and would see the miners being protected by the Military or Police. Who sent the Police or soldiers there? If you were to ask the Ashanti Regional Commander who deployed them there, he wouldn’t be able to substantiate their deployment. Why must this happen?,” the occupant of the Silver Stool of the Asante kingdom quizzed.

Meanwhile, the government this year launched a raid to clamp down on illegal miners. During a special operation conducted in September this year by the Operation Halt taskforce, 164 people were arrested.

Government has indicated that it will not relent in its efforts to deal with the canker.

  • Exporting raw cocoa beans in 21st century disheartening – Asantehene

According to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, it is depressing to see Ghana exporting unprocessed cocoa beans to the international market in the twenty-first century.

He claims that as the pricing of such resources are mostly set by the importing nations, farmers, participants in the agricultural value chain, and the nation’s economy, gain very little from exporting raw materials.

Therefore, he has urged the government and other agricultural industry participants to work toward giving raw agricultural products more value before exporting them to other markets.

The Asantehene said this during the 38th edition of the National Farmers Day in the Ashanti Region celebration on Friday, December 3, 2022.

In a speech read on his behalf of the Akwamuhene of Kumasi Traditional Council, Asafo Boakye Agyemang Bonsu, the Asantehene expressed that it would be in the country’s best interest to support farmers to improve the quality of their products before sending them onto the market.

He, however, praised Ghana’s gallant farmers who have always worked hard to provide enough food for the populace.

A total of 20 farmers received various awards at this year’s event with Nana Kwadwo Opoku Bonsu, a farmer at Asante Akyem Agogo emerging as the Region’s best farmer.

  • ‘Stabilize the Ghana Cedi’ – Otumfuo urges BoG

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has appealed to the Bank of Ghana to take necessary steps to stabilize the forex market.

In a speech read on his behalf at the 19th Ashanti Business Excellence Awards by Sewuahene, Nana Kwaku Sarkodie, the Asantehene expressed worry over the depreciation of the local currency against other foreign trading currencies.

He urged the central bank to implement measures to bring predictability to Ghana`s export and import trade, as well as other international financial transactions.

“I will like to make reference to the unsettling turbulence which has characterized Ghana’s foreign currency market, Since the beginning of the year, there has been an astronomical depreciation of the cedi against Ghana’s major foreign currencies, particularly the US Dollar.

I have no doubt that the Bank of Ghana is doing its best to remedy the situation, but the central bank is doing its best to remedy the situation, but I must urge the central bank to urgently take all the requisite steps within its competence to return the foreign market to stability, in order to bring predictability to Ghana`s export and import trade, as well as other international financial transactions”, he said.

The cedi ended last week with a marginal appreciation, but the cedi has depreciated again to GH¢14.20 to one dollar which is the average quote by the forex bureaus.

According to the Bank of Ghana, however, the local currency is selling at GH¢13.014 on the interbank market. The cedi is also going for ¢15.60 and GH¢13.60 to one pound and one euro respectively.

The free fall of the cedi coupled with the recent economic crisis in the country has triggered calls for immediate measures to be implemented by the government to resolve the situation.

President Akufo Addo in his address on Sunday, October 30, announced some measures the government intends to put in place to address the fall of the cedi and the current economic crisis.

President Akufo Addo in his address on Sunday, October 30, announced some measures the government intends to put in place to address the fall of the cedi and the current economic crisis.

  • Watch how Akufo-Addo’s V8 convoys left Manhyia Palace

The President of any country usually moves around with a convoy for official, sometimes ceremonial occasions; albeit with varying number of vehicles that escort same.

In Ghana, President Akufo-Addo, like other presidents before him, are seen during many official and ceremonial events, being escorted by a number of vehicles, usually V8.

It was a similar sight when President Akufo-Addo was captured leaving the palace of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II in his presidential vehicle, being escorted by a convoy.

This was after the President paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene at the Manhyia palace during his tour of the region earlier this month.

A set of black V8 vehicles lined up at the frontage of the Manhyia Palace and drove off one after the other after the President sat and was ready to move.

President Akufo-Addo, during his visit, touched on issues regarding illegal mining and how to deal with the canker.

Meanwhile, the president has been criticized on some occasions in the past, for using a long convoy when going on trips around the country.

  • Should Otumfuo intervene in the IMF bailout negotiations as he did for Mahama?

The 2023 National Budget, which will be put up to Parliament for approval in November 2022, would reportedly incorporate the agreements negotiated with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the bailout it is requesting.

After early talks, the IMF stated that Ghana’s government only needed to demonstrate that its debt level is manageable in order to receive the rescue it is seeking.

Bright Simons, vice president of IMANI Africa, and other analysts have hinted that it will be extremely difficult for the government to reach an agreement with the IMF before the budget is presented in the following three weeks.

Renowned economist and statesman, Kwame Pianim, has said that the information he has indicates that the bailout negotiations are not going well.

This is the time the country needs someone like the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, whose intervention, according to former President John Dramani Mahama, was critical to Ghana getting an IMF programme in 2015.

Mahama, in February 2022, said that he called on Otumfuo Osei Tutu to enquire from him whether he could get his friend, the then President of the World Bank, James D. Wolfensohn, to work on the IMF programme for the government, and the Asantehene readily accepted the request.

“Because of that programme, he (Otumfuo) flew to Washington to have talks with Mr. Wolfensohn, who, together with Otumfuo, went and spoke with the IMF Director, Madam Christine Lagarde, and within a short period of time, we had the Extended Credit Facility,” the ex-president said.

To date, the Otumfuo has not commented on the current IMF negotiations the government is having, probably because it has refused to call for a national dialogue on the current economic crisis like the one Mahama’s administration had in 2014.

If the Akufo-Addo government needs the IMF bailout as it has indicated to help turn the economy around them it has to start bringing people like Otumfuo on board,” the former president said.

  • 4 controversial statements of Akufo-Addo that shocked Ghanaians

The President of Ghana, President Akufo-Addo, is currently in the Ashanti Region as part of a tour of the region.

According to communication that was made public ahead of his four-day tour that started on Sunday, October 16, 2022, the president is expected to commission projects, inspect ongoing ones, and confer with traditional leaders of the area.

On Sunday, 16th October, President Akufo-Addo visited the Manhyia Palace to interact with the Asantehene and Asantehemaa.

As part of his itinerary, the president was also supposed to honour a number of radio appointments in the region.

Having already done three days of his tour, there have been a number of concerns raised by some Ghanaians over how the president’s activities in the region have gone so far.

Among those are a number of utterances the president has made in either his addresses at some of his scheduled engagements, and then others he made during his radio interviews.

In an earlier interview, the president also courted the disaffection of Ghanaians over some statements he made.

Below are some of the things Ghanaians wished President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should not have said, or, could have said better:

I am not afraid to be voted against

During an interview on OTEC Fm in Kumasi, President Akufo-Addo made a comment that got many people literally in stitches.

In the interview, the president stated that he is not moved by threats of electoral consequences by some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He explained that he knows that people will vote for their preferred candidates in an election and that voters can also not be forced to make choices in a democratic dispensation, hence there was no need to threaten a government with votes.

The president was responding to concerns raised by people in Manso and Kwabre, who had threatened to vote out the NPP in 2024 if their roads are not fixed.

Their concerns were conveyed by the journalist who conducted the interview on OTEC FM.

“The people of Kwabre and Manso, we know they voted massively for Nana, they have asked me to inform the president that if their roads are not fixed, they will be pained and in 2024, they will vote against the NPP,” the journalist asked after the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah, had responded to a question.

“No problem, no problem. I am saying people make those kinds of threats, me, they don’t frighten me. Somebody votes for you, somebody supports you, it is because they want you to do things for them, so I understand that,” the president quickly weighed in with a response.

    I will shame you all

Still in the Ashanti Region for his tour, the president took an opportunity while making an address to send a statement to persons he believes are his political detractors in the region.

According to him, these people will be shamed one by one by the numerous work he has done for the people of the region, which is considered the ‘political world bank’ of the governing party; the NPP.

President Akufo-Addo stated that for the past six years that he has been in office, the people of the Ashanti Region have benefitted enough from his government, therefore, his detractors cannot say otherwise.

“And to those of you going around saying bad things about me in the Ashanti Region, one after the other, they are all going to be shamed convincingly, today, tomorrow and the day after.

“In spite of our present difficulties which I know will be gone as soon as possible, I continue to be excited about the future prospects of the nation and I urge all Ghanaians to join hands in building the Ghana that we want, we can realize it if we all work at it,” he said.

The president was speaking during a sod-cutting ceremony for the Suame Interchange, on October 18, 2022.

    You can vote for NDC

While still speaking in his interview on OTEC Fm in Kumasi, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo made another comment about how unfazed he is about his party losing the next general elections.

He explained that while there are threats to vote against them, he is unmoved, adding that intimidations of voting against the NPP due to unfulfilled promises or lack of development under his tenure, is a personal decision he cannot be bothered about.

“People make those kinds of threats; they don’t frighten me. Somebody votes for you, and somebody supports you. It’s because they want you to do certain things for them. I understand that. But there is no need for people to say that if I am unable to do this and that… those are their own issues to deal with. Of course, I will do it (the road).

“But if it comes to the election and you choose to vote for the NDC, that is your own issue that is not my worry because nobody holds your thumb to vote; it is your own work. The important thing is that I understand my responsibility, and we will deal with it,” the president said.

I’m not so sure if Aisha Huang was deported

In September, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo granted an interview to Stone City Radio in Ho during his tour of the Volta Region.

During the interactions, he made a statement about the case of the embattled Chinese galamsey ‘kingpin,’ Aisha Huang (En Huang).

The statement came under a lot of public scrutiny because it was determined to have contradicted what some of his appointees had said on the same subject, to the effect that Aisha Huang had actually been deported from Ghana in 2018.

But speaking in that interview, President Akufo-Addo said it is likely that the ‘galamsey’ queen may not have been deported, but rather fled the country in 2018.

“… I am not still sure whether she was, in fact, deported or whether she fled the country the first time and has now come back or whatever. There still seems to be some uncertainty about it.

“Whichever way it is, she has become a sort of nickname for all that the ‘galamsey’ represents and also, unfortunately, for the involvement of Chinese nationals in this illicit trade,” he said.

  • ‘Give us a break,’ – Asantehene hits hard at government’s anti-galamsey fight

The government’s anti-galamsey policies and strategies have come under fire from Asantehene, who claims they are shrouded in falsehood.

According to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the fight would remain a sham unless the appropriate individuals, particularly financiers, who are responsible for the illegal mining scourge are identified.

Addressing members of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs, an unhappy Asantehene insisted that the arrest of laborers at galamsey sites, instead of the site owners, smacks of failure.

“I hate these lies. The fight is full of lies. I hate lies. They should give us a break.  It is full of lies,” he said in Twi.

The government’s fight against illegal mining has hit a snag despite the introduction of military-led interventions such as Operation Vanguard, Galamstop and Operation Halt.

A recent Joynews Hotline Documentary, “Destruction for Gold”, shed light on destruction of farmlands, forest reserves and water bodies by illegal mining operations.

An emotional Asantehene described as worrying, the trend where wrong people are targeted with no effort to arrest financiers, including those who procure excavators and heavy equipment, for the illegal act.

He also wants those who benefit from gold produced from illegal activities tracked and brought to book.

“You send military men to galamsey sites; they end up arresting labourers covered with mud. Can this man be the one behind galamsey?

“This is someone hired by a big fish to work at his site. Who is the final receiver of the gold?

“How come the one who bought excavators is left off the hook? The military as usual photograph a poor labourer whose body is always covered in dirt; a man who receives partly 200, 300 cedis from a financier.

“Then they say they have arrested galamsey operators. You will find nothing on that man when he is searched.

What then happens to the financier? How come he is not arrested,” he said in Twi.

“Are they saying they don’t know those behind galamsey in Ghana?  The gold ends up being sold abroad. So who is behind the sale of gold abroad? Is it not the financier? How come he is not arrested?

Once the financier is arrested, we will put an end to galamsey so our water bodies can be saved,” he added.

The Asantehene has also warned that chiefs under his authority who profit from the illegal mining business would pay dearly for their deeds.

“Whoever has benefited financially from galamsey will surely pay for it. All of us would pay dearly if we decide to tackle the menace lackadaisically.

As for the government, they know the culprits but has failed to arrest them.

Their own is full of lies; they should give us a break

We are partly to be blamed. All of us must accept our mistakes and move the fight forward.”

  • I express my gratitude to my brother the Asantehene and other chiefs for protecting our son – Nayiri

The Overlord of Mamprugu, Naa Bohagu Abdulai Mahami Sheriga has expressed appreciation to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and other Chiefs around the country, for protecting their son, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

The Nayiri welcomed Dr. Bawumia and his delegation, made up of members of Government from various parts of the country, to his Palace on Tuesday morning, before the Vice President commenced his working tour of the North East Region.

As members of the Vice President’s powerful delegation were introduced one after the other, the Nayiri realised that the delegation was made up of people from different parts of the country.

He acknowledged the diversity of the delegation during his address and commended Dr. Bawumia for being inclusive, adding that the diversity of the delegation is also an indication that the Vice President is widely accepted and also has a very good relationship with people.

To the members of the delegation, the Nayiri urged them to continue to work together with the Vice President until the right destination is reached.

“You have come far with the Vice President and since you have not yet reached your destination, you cannot complain of being tired. The plea to all of you is that, continue to lend support to the Vice President so that we will all get to our preferred destination.”

Expressing gratitude to all present and Chiefs for supporting the Vice President to serve, the Nayiri delivered a special message to the Asantehene, through members of the delegation from the Ashante Region.

“The Asantehene is a blood brother to the Nayiri and a very good friend. Each time they are together and they speak the same language. So those of you from Ashanti, when you get back, go to the Asantehene and tell him that his brother, his friend extends warm greetings to him and expresses his gratitude to him for protecting our son. I also request his continuous support for his son so that he can get to where he wants to get to.”

The Nayiri urged Dr. Bawumia to continue to work hard in service to the nation, assuring that God will reward his efforts.

The Vice President has been on a working visit to the since Sunday. After spending two days in the Northern Region, he started the a tour of the North East Region.

Members of his delegation is made up of Ministers, MPs, Senior Government and Party Officials, former party executives and other party stalwarts.

  • Don’t go into nursing just because you need a job, you must have the passion for it – Asantehene advises

Asantehene has urged the youth in Ghana to choose the nursing profession because they have the heart for it and not because of its relative job assurance and other benefits that come with being in nursing training institutions.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said that most people go into nursing and teaching not because of the love they have for these professions and they end up becoming frustrated.

The Asantehene, who made these remarks when a team from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana paid him a courtesy call, reiterated that only people who have the calling can become good nurses.

“If you don’t have the heart for the nursing profession don’t go into it because you will not be able to do the work effectively.

“People who go into nursing because it is a reliable source of employment are mostly not happy. People who are called, who love taking care of people are those who become better nurses.

“If you want to become a good nurse it must come from your heart. You must have patience. Dealing with sick people is very stressful but you are the person who will be taking care of them. You have to help bedridden people ease themselves, you must bathe them and so on. In all these, it is the empathy that you have that can make you an excellent nurse,” he said in Twi.

  • There are powerful forces behind ‘galamseyers’ – US ambassador to Otumfuo

The United States (US) Ambassador to Ghana, Virginia Palmer, has urged the government of Ghana to put in more effort in the fight against the menace of illegal small-scale mining (‘galamsey’) in the country.

According to her, Ghana was not making any significant strides in the fight against the menace because only the illegal miners (‘galamseyers’) are arrested while the powerful forces behind them are not touched.

Virginia Palmer, who made these remarks when she paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, added that if the government fails to take urgent steps to stop ‘galamsey’, the country will be in some serious crisis soon.

“We had a congressional delegation from our House of Representatives, Natural Resources Committee, that was here two weeks ago. And they were looking into water pollution, the impact on fisheries from illegal mining.

“This (galamsey) is something, I think Ghanaians must be aggressive in fighting and enforcing regulations that you do have.

“The galamseyers themselves are people who need to make a living. I think the galamseyers are not active in doing it but the powers behind them are the ones truly responsible for the evils. Indeed, they are wreaking real environmental havoc on your rivers which is having an impact on your cocoa crops. All of these things are going to have really negative consequences on the economy of Ghana,” she said.

On his part, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, questioned why Ghana as a country has failed to stop the menace of ‘galamsey’ even after the President Akufo-Addo, has put his political career on the line to stop it.

Asantehene also questioned why the security apparatus in these ‘galamsey’ areas and the taskforce set up by the government have failed to stop the menace.

He intimated that small-scale mining was something that had been done for serveral years but never to the detriment of the environment.

“It (‘galamsey’) has gotten to a point where people are now using equipment and all that. They do not care about the environment.

“But the question is who is in control of the security around the area. From the district level to the highest level. We are all talking about ‘galamsey’. The government set up this military cum police to stop galamsey. Why have we not been able to stop it? Why?” he asked.

  • Asantehene must organize Queen Elizabeth’s funeral else they will ruin it – Diana Asamoah

Gospel music and minister of the gospel, Diana Asamoah has made a plea to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to take charge of the burial and funeral service of the late British monarch, Queen of Elizabeth II.

The queen who reigned for 70 years passed away on September 8 at age 96. The world and its leaders have mourned Queen Elizabeth, the longest-serving British monarch.

Reacting to the news of her death and plans for her final funeral rites, Diana Asamoah in a video shared on TikTok just a day after the queen’s passing requested that Ghana’s president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Chief of Staff, Frema Opare ensured that Asantehene took charge of the burial since the Ashanti Region holds the record as the best funeral organizers in the country and the world at large.

“Dear Ghanaians and people worldwide, Africa, we all know what has happened to us. We are saddened by what has happened to the United Kingdom. Their Queen has been called to eternity by God. She lived a good life from which we all benefited.

“I just have a little plea to make to our King, Asantehene, Osei Tutu II, President Akufo-Addo and Frema Opare,” she said in the video that captured her in a black dress.

The gospel explained that in 2021, the funeral of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband of the late Queen wasn’t befitting for his status as a British royal reason why Asantehene must be handed over that duty.

“We all witnessed the great and befitting funeral organized for the late Asantehemaa. I say that we weren’t impressed with the funeral of Queen Elizabeth’s late husband…as for the Queen’s funeral, I am on my knees begging the Asantehene to take over the organization.

“It is a fact that we the Ashantis are the best organizers of funerals, so I plead with Asantehene to take over. The late Queen is a royal and so, we the Ashantis should give her a befitting burial…I am even prepared to sponsor it. Please act on it else they will ruin it. I thank you in advance for considering my request,” Diana Asamoah concluded in her message to Otumfuo.

Meanwhile, the Manhyia Palace in a Twitter post on September 9, mourned the passing of Queen Elizabeth II.

  • Asantehene’s wife is worth more than the title ‘lady’: She is a queen

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene has by far proven to be an outstanding King. A biblical precept goes “to whom much is given, much will be required” (Luke 12:48). Indeed, this is a King to admire.

The Asante Kingdom predates colonial Africa and Ghana with culture and history so invaluable. The kingdom may have been documented to have been in existence from the 17th Century, however, other historians have extended and connected it to Mesopotamia which was located in Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, and parts of Turkey.

Mesopotamia, (Sumerian civilization) is the oldest civilization known to humans. Oral tradition may have also suggested that the Asantes came from a hole. This only goes to make the history intriguing and enhance how great and powerful this kingdom has always been.

The “eve” of Ghana’s independence, saw agitations and suggestions for federalism instead of having the kingdom become part of the New Republic of Ghana. That was only a phase. We have to traverse most differences and today, we have been knitted into one beautiful nation, the pride of Africa. The peace and love we share have reached heights that are worthy of emulation by the world and surpass that which may exist anywhere.

The Asantes have long been expansionists. This uniqueness perhaps may be accountable for their emergence, growth, and stableness as one the most visible on top of the social structure. Interventions like the Otumfuo Education Fund have been instrumental in shaping the new generation. More Asante youths are attaining higher academic laurels and this is so applaudable.

In 2014, Forbes rated Otumfuo Osei Tutu ll highly as one of the richest Kings with an estimated net worth of $10 million. His royal majesty has equally shown good leadership by empowering Ghanaians all over because his investment in education and more isn’t reserved for only Asantes.

This is a refined man who has proven to be a good statesman over the years. His objectivity on state issues, his proactivity, and his non-partisanship have made him an authority and one of the last resorts when the country is saddled with sensitive issues.

King Leopold’s II, letter to the missionaries in Congo, 1883, suggests one prominent thing, and this is relevant to the entire continent. It states clearly that our culture and traditions were to be purposely demonized. We were to be Europeanized in every way and form so we may give prominence to everything Western and demean our culture and heritage. A calculated attempt to rob us of our self-esteem, confidence, and dignity.

Indeed our selfless ancestors put up a resistance but their defences were broken and onboard slave ships like Desire, Amistad, Aurore, Duc du Maine were the best human capital, geniuses of all kinds, gold, silver, diamond, and more. The recent call for Slavery Reparations, as re-echoed by our President may not be out of place. Colonialism created a great void that we keep struggling to fill. Coupled with bad leadership and mismanagement, we have become slaves of our past. There is still hope and as Africans, we will find our way.

Ghana is relevant politically, economically, socially, and culturally to the African continent. Our culture and traditions are the pride for many and the “Asanteness” in there, is one of the many features that can’t be unnoticed. The Asantehene is also respected, globally and has a lot of influence. He is an important custodian of our culture, heritage and the world watches with delight and amazement as he flaunts his rich culture with pride and honour wherever he represents Ghana. He is a positive model for all.

You may have also heard the saying “life is like chess”, and you may have heard as much as I have. I have also gathered that, in the game of chess, in terms of raw power, the “Queen” happens to be the most powerful. In real life, even in our traditional African setting, the King may have the best of elders and advisors in his court to help, and guide him to be at his best, but, the wife of the King, behind the scene, plays an indispensable role in how great a king may be.

Ghana, just like several African states has a patriarchal society, and the role of women and the girl child is often downplayed. It is in good taste that not so long ago, the Asantehene reiterated that his wife is his source of inspiration and very pivotal.

May I take this moment to applaud this woman for being an extraordinary wife to an extraordinary King. However, I am making an appeal that she is called by a more befitting title (Otumfuo-Yere) or another matching Asante accolade instead of “lady”. She is not a lady at all. She is more than a lady. She is a Queen.

A lady is a wife of a Lord among the English. This great woman is married to a King, not a Lord. Kings are higher than Lords and any correction in this regard is welcomed if I am wrong.

In my opinion, the title ‘lady” only belittles her before Europeans and more. Her royalty and that of her husband are not the second tiers to the royalty of the Queen of England or any King or Queen anywhere on the map. The British Kingdom, in reality, survived on the riches of Ghanaians, West Africans, and more.

Even if the Queen bestowed the title “lady” on her, she is worth more than that. She is Otumfuo-Yere Julia Osei Tutu. She is not an European. She is a custodian of our culture. She represents so much and is a representation of our ancestry as great African people.

Please let us reconsider refraining from calling her by the title lady. Long live, Ghana. Long live Asantehene, Long live Otumfuo-Yere Julia Osei Tutu.

He has however revealed and cautioned party leaders, especially the NPP ahead of their parliamentary primaries.

  • Otumfuo’s stool taken from Ashanti’s by British in 1870’s now monument at Oxford University

Asantehene Otumfuo Nana Kofi Karikari’s War Stool which was taken from the Ashanti Kingdom by force by the British has become a popular monument at Oxford University.

In a post sighted by YEN.com.gh on the official Facebook handle of Ghana Facts & History, the War Stool was taken during the Ashanti War which occurred from 1873-1874.

This was under the leadership of the British field marshal popularly known in Ghanaian history as Sir Garnet Joseph Wolseley.

    See post below:

Currently, the stool is at the Pitt Rivers Collections at Oxford University’s museum.

Sir Garnet Wolsely, the leader of the British regiment, was known as one of the most influential and admired British generals after a series of successes in Canada, West Africa, and Egypt, followed by a central role in modernizing the British Army in promoting efficiency.

  • Otumfuos 2016 election comment: Captain Smart writes

Otumfour delivered the most powerful speech and they’re taken only a portion to fight over. What’s the big deal in otumfour adding his voice to a loosing candidate to throw in the towel. Maybe because of the relationship between them.

Do we know the people who might have called Nana Addo in 2008 and 2012 when he lost. Who called Prof. Mills in 2000 and 2004?. Who called JA Kufour in in 1996?. Maybe if The Prof. Adu Boahene led-NPP had had such a godly counsel they wouldn’t have abandoned parliament. That is political selfishness.

Read: Calling Otumfuo a liar an inexcusable offense Manhyia warns Mahama
