  • I was bullied over my Kwaku Frimpong name because I am a Muslim -Black Sherif

Despite his current status, Black Sherif has revealed that he was bullied like every normal teenager during his younger years.

Sherif says he was bullied due to his name, the one he has made popular in most of his tracks – Kwaku Frimpong.

The rapper was born Kwaku Frimpong and has the Muslim name Sherif Muhamed Ismail.

According to him, during his younger years, he was bullied for being Muslim yet having a generic name like Kwaku Frimpong.

He said that relentless bullying led him to use that name a lot in his music as a way of honouring it.

“You see now I use Kwaku, KK (Kwaku Killa), a lot. I used to get bullied for it,” he said in during an interview with Spotify RADAR Africa.

According to him, bullies would descend on him saying: “How are you, a Muslim, calling yourself Frimpong?

“[Because of that] I didn’t like the Frimpong name, even though that’s my father’s name.”

“Due to that history, I have always felt I have to do something, I have a debt to pay, pay my dues, so that name would be mentioned and honoured. This is why I never front Sherif Muhammed Ismail a lot. I [rather] front Kwaku Frimpong,”

“That [name] is my actual identity,” he added.

It’s fitting, considering he came to the limelight in Second Sermona song that heavily featured the Kwaku Frimpong story.

  • Black Sherif reveals he was bullied for ‘Kwaku,’ ‘Frimpong’ names

Ghanaian artiste Black Sherif has revealed why most of his songs contain the names ‘Kwaku’, ‘Frimpong’ and ‘Kwaku Killa (KK)’.

“You see now I use Kwaku, KK, a lot. I used to get bullied for it,” he said in his near-hoarse voice on a Spotify RADAR Africa interview, posted on YouTube on December 14, 2022.

“At the time, I was Sherif Frimpong Ismail,” he kept pulling his beard, and smiled as he made the recollection.

Explaining why he was bullied for his preferred name, he quoted what his bullies would say: “How are you, a Muslim, calling yourself Frimpong?”

He noted that because of the mockery, “I didn’t like the Frimpong name, even though that’s my father’s name.”

After High School, however, he came to the realisation that the name is: “My identity.”

“Due to that history, I have always felt I have to do something, I have a debt to pay, pay my dues, so that name would be mentioned and honoured,” he revealed his resolve. “This is why I never front Sherif Muhammed Ismail a lot.”

“I [rather] front Kwaku Frimpong,” he stressed looking his Spotify host in the eye. “That [name] is my actual identity.”

Currently the fastest-rising Ghanaian music act, he also said it was a surprise to him when he first noticed that subconsciously, his go-to name when he makes music is Kwaku Frimpong.

“About eight weeks, I wrote a lot of songs and in about 80 per cent of them, I found myself saying ‘Kwaku’ a lot,” he said in wonder as though it was a fresh realisation.

The breakthrough song for the Konongo-born rapper, ‘Second Sermon’, which later saw a remix featuring Nigeria’s Burna Boy, birthed the catchphrase: “Kwaku Frimpong will cause trouble.” In the song, the young adult bemoans engagement in actitivties his family, especially his mother, would not be proud of, all in pursuit of a better life in Ghana’s capital Accra.

“Now that the whole world is chanting ‘Kwaku Frimpong’,” the hitmaker says he has noticed he has “paid” the name its due respect.

  • Massive achievement for Black Sherif as ‘The Villain I Never Was’ features in Top American 50 best album

Black Sherif has hit yet another milestone that raises him higher and higher out of the orbit of his fellow Ghanaian stars as his album has been named one of the 50 best of the year.

‘The Villain I Never Was’ has been named by U.S music magazine The Fader as one of the 50 best albums of the year.

The album landed number 49 on the list – a massive achievement for the young Ghanaian star!

In the piece, “The 50 best albums of 2022”, The Fader writes of Black Sherif’s debut EP: “After the international success of “Kwaku The Traveller” and a string of unforgettable features, Konongo-born rapper Black Sherif was supposed to spend his summer playing at festivals across Europe.

“A creative spirit prevailed, though, and he was possessed by a desire to complete his debut album at home in Ghana. So, instead of euphoric performances throughout the world, he spent the rest of the year slinking across studios in Accra to finish his debut album, The Villain I Never Was.

“I left it all to finish this album because I wanted to give it my all,” he told THE FACE earlier this year. As achingly honest as it is insular, The Villain I Never Was is a coming-of-age epistle from the fast-rising rapper keen to make sense of — and do away with — the nihilistic public perception that his music has created.

“Oil In My Head” is accessorized with thumping basslines and skittering percussion, but its subtext is an urgent plea for peace of mind. On “Toxic Love City,” he sings that he fucked up by letting someone he loved realize their hold over him. These are the words of a 20-year-old navigating life, forming new memories, and exorcising his demons.”

The achievement brings a magnificent 2022 to a perfect end for Black Sherif.

If he continues on this trajectory, the young man is going to end up being compared to Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy very soon!

  • George Quaye explains why Ghanaians, foreigners have a passion for Black Sherif’s songs

Black Sherif has received praise from Ghanaian actor and media personality George Quaye for staying original and telling stories that music lovers can relate to.

According to George, musicians who tell their stories in songs tend to be successful, while those who avoid sharing their experiences lose listeners.

Rating the works of Blacko, Ghana’s young rapper who has recorded huge success in the last two years, George Quaye noted that he does not possess extraordinary talent; however, staying original has been his most powerful tool.

“The thing he has that some artistes had but somewhere along the line lost is originality. In this industry, there is nothing better than telling your story and sharing your experience, especially when you are a musician…When they are sharing their own stories through music, there’s some passion…if you look at his photos, you can see a clear hustler. He has recorded huge success with Ghanaian media also offering their support,” George Quaye said in his submission on United Showbiz with Nana Ama McBrown.

The actor also added that he was not impressed with Black Sherif’s music video for his hit singles ‘Kwaku The Traveller’ and ‘Soja’.

“When we speak of music for music, rhythm and arrangement and everything else, in all honesty, it is not extraordinary, but the message in his song is what touches our hearts. Recently, I saw the video for Soja, and I was disappointed. I’ve also stated that the music video for ‘Kwaku The Traveller’ was quite disappointing.

“That is my personal opinion; I thought it could be better, but forget all of that and listen to what the man is saying. That is what is making all these international acts connect,” George Quaye noted.

Speaking on 3Music TV, he praised the artiste while tackling assumptions some Ghanaians have that he chases after new acts in order to stay relevant.

“Big shoutouts to my superstar Blacko. Blacko hit me up at the last minute of this project and said Landlord, I have to be on you Jamz, and I said great,” Sarkodie said.

According to Sarkodie, people who don’t get why he is ahead of his game tend to make up stories that make sense to them.

He also added that many of these artistes people claim he chases come to him for a feature.

“I should feel bad because people actually don’t make sense of why you are still here. Because that’s the only reason, there is no other reason. They want to find the logic behind why you can still be relevant after a long time.

“And the funny thing is most of these records that you hear me on, and you think I am jumping on somebody’s record? I never reach out to these people,” he added.

Sarkodie added that going after up-and-coming artistes is something he doesn’t do but wouldn’t mind working with them when he is called on.

  • A rare photo of Black Sherif and his family pops up

Ghanaian artiste, Black Sherif, has shared an image of himself and his family beaming with smiles.

In a picture shared by blogger, Sammy Kay, Blacko was captured with two middle-aged women, a young boy and a young man.

From the angle the artiste took his picture, many netizens have indicated that the fair-coloured woman to Blacko’s right is his mother, while the two young men were his brothers.

Blacko’s post comes after social media went crazy when it emerged that one of Black Sherif’s tracks off his ‘The Villian I Never Was’ album, titled, ‘Oh Paradise,’ was solely dedicated to his late girlfriend, Clementina.

Referring to her as an unforgettable first love, the musician in that particular track narrated how her death had a lasting effect on him.

  • Black Sherif, Sarkodie, Kidi, D’Black, others battle it out for DJs Song of the Year

The DJs song of the year, a category of the Ghana DJ Awards which recognizes songs that were played most by DJs during a year under review, is a fiercely contested bracket.

While the category is an opportunity for the Ghana DJ Awards to honour musicians who produce some of the most played songs by DJs, it is also an opportunity for artists to recognize the importance of DJs in promoting their songs.

Making his first entry into the category is Black Sherif with his popular jam “Kweku the Traveler“. During the year under review, Kweku the Traveler has enjoyed massive airplay on radio, TV, and events across the country and beyond.

In addition, the song broke into the Nigerian market as it became the first Ghanaian song to rank number 1 on the top 100 Music Chart on Apple Music. It is, therefore, not surprising that Killer Blacko made the cut for the DJs song of the year.

Accordingly, after winning last year’s edition with his original hit song “Touch It”, Kidi is back in the sticks. Interestingly, a remixed version of “Touch It”, which features American rapper Tyga, is up for the DJ’s song of the year. So will he do a back-to-back? We await.

Also on the list is Camidoh’s popular jam “Sugar Cane Remix”, which features Nigerian acts Darko and Mayorkun alongside Ghanaian singer King Promise. Camidoh, with this tune, topped Nigerian’s top 100 songs on the Apple Music chart, becoming the second Ghanaian to reach that milestone after Black Sherif.

Receiving enormous airplay by DJs across the country, Sarkodie’s Non-Living Thing, which features Nigerian singer Oxlade got a nod in the category.

Who else is taking on the above? No other than Kuami Eugene with his “Take Over” song which went viral after DJs started giving it a massive spinning on the radio and at pubs across the country. The nomination puts the Lynx signee in close contention with his label mate Kidi for the coveted award.

Fa No Fom hitmaker DJ Azonto is equally on the list for the top prize. The song’s title has grown to become a popular saying among music lovers. Due to the songs catchy lyrics, it has been on rotation across major pubs and clubs as well as event grounds across the country.

D’black is up for the big prize with his song “Sheege”, which features fast-rising Ghanaian female singer Gyakie. The tune has enjoyed popularity among partygoers and attendees as DJs drop it as part of their playlists. It is undoubtedly going to be a tough one.

Finally on the list is Afrobeat sensation Kelvyn Boy’s song “Down Flat”. According to Kelvyn Boy, the song, written in less than 20 minutes, has gone viral worldwide. While the song made giant strides by making great entries on Billboard’s Afrobeat top charts, it made it into almost every DJ’s playlist.

The 10th edition of the Ghana DJ Awards, christened Africa’s Biggest DJ Event, is scheduled to come off on November 5, 2022, at the Silver Star Tower in Accra. Some acts billed to perform include Stonebwoy, Obaapa Christy, Kuami Eugene, Increbible Zigi, Keche, amongst others.

Blacko disclosed that he had been the villain in people’s stories as well as his.

According to the ‘Oh Paradise’ artiste, circumstances made him seem like a villain, but when he sits down to look deeper into himself, he is not who people perceive him to be.

“I have been my own villain and the villain in people’s stories but when I sit and be at peace with myself, I realise that I am not the villain,” he said.

He was welcomed at the airport by a New Zealand cultural troupe who danced and laid hands on him in what looked like a prayer moment.

Kuami and his disk jockey, DJ Vyrusky, also joined in the tongue-out routine which is part of the Haka dance which was done in his honour at the Auckland airport.

According to Blacko, the plan is to invest and reinvest the money he makes from the industry into his craft and push it to the next level.

“I haven’t reached anywhere. I only came to Accra two years ago to make my music. The money I am making. If I buy cars and other things, it won’t benefit me.

“I have money to reinvest in my videos and promote my music because I believe that’s the only way forward,” he said.

  • Anyone who partners with Burna Boy gets huge attention – Wei Ye Oteng speaks about Black Sherif’s fame

Well-known music beat producer Justice Oteng also known as Wei Ye Oteng has averred that anyone who associates with Grammy award-winning artist Burna Boy gets public attention.

Recall that Black Sherif caught the attention of Burna Boy after releasing his popular track ‘Second Sermon’. Burna Boy was seen in a viral video dancing to the track of Black Sherif a few weeks after it was released.

The two later collaborated and released the remix of Second Sermond and also shot a music video for the music. Burna Boy also was seen touring the US with Black Sherif. This bond between the two artists has brought up the opinion of Wei Ye Oteng that Black Sherif got more famous after partnering with Burna Boy.

“Black Sherif is good. I mean, the likes of Kwadee were unique just like Black Sherif is, but whichever sound they had, or playing around with, was already in there. So we appreciate that. Now, if you have an affiliation with Burna Boy just upon releasing two songs into the mainstream, the whole world would want to listen to you”, he said in an interview on Showbiz 927.

“The whole world would want to know what is under your sleeve, not because they believe that you are extremely the “ish” (good), but they know that you are positive and you are on the path to greatness and that you need support.

“So, everything that you do, based on the type of affiliation you have, they troop in to come and listen and then to make their own judgment”.

  • Black Sherif is not any special – Wei Ye Oteng

Beat producer and chief executive officer of Drum Lyne Music facility Justice Oteng well known as Wei Ye Oteng says sensational artist Black Sherif isn’t that special.

According to the best producer, the songs of Black Sherif tops music charts because people rush to listen out of curiosity but not because he does anything extraordinary.

Wei Ye Oteng however emphasized that Black Sherif despite the fact that Black Sherif is good and produces good music, is not doing anything new in regard to his music career.

Wei Ye Oteng made this comment in regard to the comment Reggie Rockstone made asking Blacko to curve a name for his music genre.

Oteng said: “Black Sherif is good. I mean, the likes of Kwadee were unique just like Black Sherif is, but whichever sound they had, or playing around with, was already in there. So we appreciate that. Now, if you have an affiliation with Burna Boy just upon releasing two songs into the mainstream, the whole world would want to listen to you”.

“The whole world would want to know what is under your sleeve, not because they believe that you are extremely the “ish” (good), but they know that you are positive and you are on the path to greatness and that you need support. So, everything that you do, based on the type of affiliation and have, they troop in to come and listen and then to make their own judgment”.

Wei Ye Oteng however admitted that Black Sherif is doing well and producing good music.

“For the truth, I think this guy is doing very well, but let’s not lift him beyond where he is supposed to be. If we do that and complacency sets in, we will kill him before his time”.

“He has a good album, but trust me, a lot of these streams are out of curiosity and affiliation with the choice of brands that he has associated himself with. And we shouldn’t forget, he is on one of the biggest labels that are well endowed to reach out to any place in the world that they want to,” Wei Ye Oteng insisted.

Rapper Black Sherif has revealed that his mother was initially hesitant to support his decision to solely focus on music after completing senior high school.

Speaking on Twitter’s Behind The Tweets, he explained that his mother expected him to go to school but he took time off for his music.

The Soja hitmaker said this was during the time he was still trying to perfect his sound and figure out the kind of artiste he wanted to be.

“My mum, she got plenty of doubts. She had doubts about me fully focusing on music because I had to go to school and I took that gap year just to focus on music,” Black Sherif said.

However, he was soon to get his mother’s full support after she saw him do an interview on TV for the first time.

“I was just right back from an interview on Adom TV and she called me, she was so emotional, how she was talking, I knew she was crying but she didn’t tell me, but I knew,” Black Sherif recalled and added that his mum’s reaction inspired him explaining “because it never used to be like that.”

  • ‘Black Sherif can fill the O2 Arena; his music is everywhere’ – Alordia

Founder of Alordia Promotions, Mr. Alordia says one Ghanaian artiste who has the potential to fill the O2 Arena is Black Sherif.

Speaking in an interview with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, he mentioned that this is possible because he has managed to get his music to be accepted by millions of people worldwide.

The conversation about how far Ghanaian musicians can go on the international front just took a different turn after the CEO of Akwaaba UK, Mr. Denis Tawiah mentioned that no Ghanaian artists can fill the O2 Arena.

In an interview with Lexis Bill on Personality Profile on Joy FM, he said; “Which Ghanaian artiste, on record, as we speak, has even sold a 5,000-capacity venue in the UK?” he wondered.

The closest, he recalls, is Reggie Rockstone or Sarkodie, who might have drawn about 4,000 audiences to their shows some years ago.

Even though DJ Alordia agrees with him, he also mentioned that an artiste like Black Sherif can fill the O2 only if all arms in the entertainment sector come together to work as a unit.

“The only person that can fill the O2 arena is Black Sherif because his music is everywhere. Our artists go there and sit there alone. They do not involve indigenous promoters who will help them reach out to people to come for the events.

“We can do this but we have to come together and work,” he said on Hitz FM.

  • Father of Black Sherif’s late SHS lover goes after him

The father of Clementina Konadu, Black Sherif’s late SHS lover, has made some allegations against the musician.

It had emerged that one of Black Sherif’s tracks off his ‘The Villian I Never Was’ album, titled, ‘Oh Paradise,’ was solely dedicated to Clementina.

Referring to her as an unforgettable first love, the musician in that particular track narrated how her death has had a lasting effect on him.

At Black Sherif’s album listening, he was nearly moved to tears while analyzing the track.

But Clementina’s father, who appears to have been keeping tabs on the entire development, has accused the ‘Soja’ hitmaker of feeding off the death of his daughter.

Clement Kofi Adu Bofuor in an interview with Kumasi-based video blogger, Abro, said that he believes Black Sherif is disrespecting the memory of his late daughter whiles making money from her death.

Establishing that he had never met the ‘Soja’ hitmaker in his life, Clementina’s father said Black Sherif never showed up at the funeral grounds of his daughter when she was laid in state, hence he does not believe they dated.

He has however asked Black Sherif to come clean on his supposed relationship with his daughter or he will be forced to take him on because the musician might have a hand in the death of his late daughter.

“I have never met Black Sherif and I don’t know anything about his relationship with my daughter. I only heard that he has made a song about my daughter’s death and claimed to be her boyfriend. He has to come before us and answer questions because he is using our daughter’s name to make money through his music,” Mr. Bofuor said.

  • Black Sherif’s performance at the 2022 Tidal Rave concert marred by malfunctioning microphone

Black Sherif had an awful time on stage at the 2022 Tidal Rave concert held on Saturday, October 15, 2022.

The likes of Sarkodie, R2bees, Joey B, Gyakie, Darko Vibes, and other famed GH stars gave patrons more than they bargained for with back-to-back songs from their rich catalogue.

However, it was Black Sherif whose performance attracted much attention as technical hitches and a blackout conspired to thwart his effort.

The high-flying HipHop artist was left stranded on the stage for many minutes when he was all set to perform simply because his mic had an issue and there was also a lot of interruption with the sound.

Eventually, he has to halt and leave the stage in a manner that looked as though he was sabotaged.

Tidal Rave Beach Festival is Ghana’s biggest beach festival. This festival is a key youth cultural moment in Ghana.

It is full of energetic activities such as games, a food market, and an A-List headlined music concert. This event is curated and organised by EchoHouse Ghana Limited each year.

Meanwhile, Black Sherif just cemented his legacy as the newest kid on the block by making history on Boomplay with his debut album, ‘The Villain I Never Was.’

The album which dropped a few days ago has gone ahead to become the first Ghanaian album to accumulate over 100 million streams within a short time.

The 14-track album which has only one feature in the person of Burna Boy, has tracks including, ‘The Homeless Song’, ‘Oil In My Head’, ’45’, ‘Prey Da Youngsta’, ‘Sad Boys Don’t Fold’, ‘Konongo Zongo’, ‘Waste Man’, ‘We Up’, ‘Toxic Love City’, ‘Don’t Forget Me’, and ‘Oh Paradise’.
