Why is Cheddar suddenly a target of GRA, what is govt so afraid of? – Kojo Yankson quizzes

Co-host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Kojo Yankson has expressed curiosity about the government’s actions related to financial matters, particularly those associated with Nana Kwame Bediako, widely known as Cheddar.

His concern comes after reports that Cheddar is embroiled in a series of tax evasion controversies, according to documents obtained from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The records reveal that he has incurred substantial penalties for the non-filing of income tax, raising concerns about his commitment to financial transparency, especially in light of his aspirations to lead the nation.

The disclosed documents expose a recurring pattern of tax evasion. From 2013 to 2016, Cheddar faced penalties of GHC15,222, GHC14,492, GHC13,760, and GHC6,526 for neglecting to submit personal income tax returns. While he seemingly complied for the tax years 2018, 2019, and 2020, the troubling trend of non-compliance resurfaced in 2021 and 2022.

According to the leaked document, the estimated evaded taxes for these two years are staggering, reaching GHC2,088,228 for 2021 and GHC5,096,536 for 2022.

Reacting to the news, Kojo Yankson, despite supporting the payment of tax by Cheddar, noted that it was suspicious of the GRA to come after Cheddar days after revealing his intentions to run for the 2024 presidential elections.

According to Mr Yankson, he has heard of instances where government comes after individuals it finds as a threat.

He is, however, puzzled as to why other political contenders such as leader of Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen not been targeted. He wants to find out why Cheddar is allegedly on government’s radar.

“This is Ghana. The GRA’s job all day long is to remind people of their tax they have to pay. They send adverts fir us to read to remind people to file their tax return and that if you file it late, there is a penalty.

“But suddenly Cheddar is their target. All through out the 7 years, I’ve been hearing about how people who speak against this government suddenly become targets of the GRA.

“It hasn’t happened to me yet but maybe after this video, it will. It will be an interesting thing. On one side I’m in favour of people paying taxes. It has to happen. But I also know that in reality sometimes people don’t pay it all at once.

“I don’t know what the idea of this story is about. Is it just to malign a political opponent. Why are they taking this particular opponent seriously. What are they so afraid of. What exactly is it that they are worried he will do.

“I don’t see them do this to Alan Kyerematen, Sam Ankrah. I don’t see it but somehow Cheddar is a threat. He should pay his tax,” he said.

Nana Kwame Bediako, widely known as Cheddar, is embroiled in a series of tax evasion controversies, according to documents obtained from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The records reveal that he has incurred substantial penalties for the non-filing of income tax, raising concerns about his commitment to financial transparency, especially in light of his aspirations to lead the nation.

According to the leaked document, the estimated evaded taxes for these two years are staggering, reaching GHC2,088,228 for 2021 and GHC5,096,536 for 2022.

Cheddar’s presidential ambitions, centered around promising a new era of development and change in Ghanaian politics, face a significant challenge with the revelation of consistent failures to fulfill basic civic duties, such as paying taxes.

This inconsistency raises questions about his credibility, especially considering his advocacy for positive change in recent political pronouncements and his declaration of intent to contest the presidency.

The GRA’s recent disclosure serves as a litmus test for Cheddar to address these tax evasion allegations transparently and with accountability. As the general election approaches, voters may find it challenging to reconcile his proclaimed commitment to change with perceived financial hypocrisy.

In an interview on Ekosisen on Asempa FM, Cheddar he stated that COVID-19 and the Russia Ukraine war are among key factors that has affected the progress of the current administration.

“Looking at Akufo-Addo it’s not like we are saying the economy under his tenure is bad. But I also think he’s a president that’s really good at promotion. He’s really promoted Ghana but it’s just that certain things did not go well during his regime,” he said.

Cheddar further commended the government on its initiatives like ‘The Year of Return’ and ‘Beyond the Return’ which he said has  helped in promoting the country.

“During his time, there was COVID, there was the lockdown, the wars but when you look at the Beyond the Return project, it brought the diaspora into the country. December is a good year for Ghana since the NPP came to power,” he stated.

In a recent interview, Cheddar expressed admiration for the leadership and governance style of the former President, highlighting Kufuor’s impact during his tenure.

He noted that during the Kufuor regime, the living conditions of the citizenry significantly improved.

Asked which of Ghana’s presidents inspire him during an interview on Asempa FM, he noted that: “Kwame Nkrumah is the first one but after that, I think that it’s Kufuor.”

He acknowledged that Ghana’s other Presidents did their best and are still doing their best, however, in his view, President Kufuor’s performance outweighs that of the others.

“I’m sorry if I’ve not mentioned the names of some people but it’s not like they did not put in their best. We appreciate all they did but looking at the living conditions of people during the Kufuor regime, you realise that things were better then,” he said.

Leave Cheddar alone; stop treating him like a thief – Mr. Logic

Renowned artist manager and musician, Emmanuel Barnes, popularly known as Mr. Logic, has stepped forward in support of New Force leader, Nana Kwame Bediako, aka Cheddar, urging Ghanaians to allow him to pursue his political aspirations without facing unnecessary criticism.

Mr. Logic emphasizes the importance of letting Cheddar, a young and aspiring leader, freely chase his dream of reaching the highest office in the country.

He argues that age should not serve as a hindrance to leadership, asserting that every individual has the right to aim for the presidency.

In a recent Facebook post, Mr. Logic asserts, “Is only in GHANA that when a young man aspires to take leadership, then he is tagged a thief. Leave CHEDDAR Alone pls. Ghana don’t belong to any family or GROUP!!”

Mr. Logic firmly believes that such stereotypes should not be unfairly applied to Cheddar.

He highlights Ghana’s democratic principles, emphasizing that in this nation, irrespective of age or background, everyone has the right to aspire to the highest seat of power.

The public’s response to Cheddar’s political aspirations remains uncertain, and it remains to be seen whether Mr. Logic’s call to “Leave Cheddar Alone” will influence public opinion on the matter.

Nana Kwame Bediako revealed he is the face behind the New Force political movement which occurred during a press conference following the cancellation of a planned public lecture event named “The Convention,” organized under the banner of the New Africa Foundation on January 7, 2024.

Nana Kwame Bediako expressed his intention to use this opportunity to introduce himself, discuss his policies, and his aspirations to lead Ghana as President.

With a theatrical touch, he declared, “I know you are looking for the man, the man in the mask is sitting in front of you. I am nothing to be scared of, I came to you as your salvation, I don’t invest in myself alone, I am investing in you …. if you are about to find out the man in the mask because I never spoke a word, you were looking for me, I didn’t tell you I am into politics, whether I am an evangelist, whether I am a conventionist or a revolutionist,

After this day, you will have to wait for me to share my policies and my visions with you. “

Cheddar has become a focal point of controversy, with his source of income facing thorough examination in interviews conducted by various media outlets.

Facts, policies do not win elections, leave Cheddar alone – Bright Simons tells critics

The Honorary Vice President of IMANI-Africa, Bright Simons, has raised the question of whether demanding “facts and policies” from Cheddar, also known as Nana Kwame Bediako, holds any significance in winning elections.

According to Simons, global research suggests that elections often pivot on emotional connections rather than detailed facts and policies, challenging the expectations of Ghanaians seeking such specifics from Cheddar.

His remarks follow responses from a segment of the middle class expressing dissatisfaction with Cheddar’s understanding of facts and policies.

In a post dated January 16, 2024, on X, Simons highlighted that middle-class Ghanaians have shown disinterest in issues related to the state’s facts and policies, referencing controversial policies like Agyapa, SML, Kelni-GVG, and PDS.

IMANI-Africa’s Honorary Vice President questioned whether those unimpressed by Cheddar’s perceived lack of grasp on facts and policies constitute his target audience and whether such concerns have any bearing on winning elections in Ghana.

Meanwhile, Nana Kwame Bediako, the driving force behind The New Force agenda, is actively engaged in a media campaign tour, outlining his presidential aspirations and the contributions he aims to make for the citizens.

Old video of hen and a cock business story by Cheddar causes controversy

Ghanaian real estate tycoon and aspiring presidential candidate, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, is currently facing scrutiny and controversy over conflicting accounts of the source of his wealth.

During a recent interview with Bernard Avle, Cheddar asserted that he made his first million pounds at the age of 21 by selling scraps in the United Kingdom. However, this claim has been met with skepticism and criticism from some Ghanaians who have consistently questioned the authenticity of his wealth.

Adding to the controversy, a resurfaced video on social media shows Cheddar offering a different narrative in an interview with Serwaa Amihere.

In this interview, he stated that his initial business venture was a poultry farm that began with just a hen and a cock. Cheddar elaborated on how the poultry farm became successful through the sale of eggs, and he emphasized that the profits were used by his mother to cover his school fees and that of his brother.

The conflicting stories have intensified the scrutiny surrounding Cheddar’s wealth, leaving many questioning the consistency and credibility of his accounts regarding the origins of his financial success.

I hired Shalima to prove white people can work for us – Nana Kwame Bediako

Leader of the New Force Movement, Nana Kwame Bediako popularly known as Cheddar has provided insight into his decision to appoint Shalimar Abbiusi, a foreigner, as his spokesperson.

He explained that his intent was to challenge the narrative that white individuals cannot serve as subordinates to Africans.

According to him, Shalimar’s role was aimed at demonstrating to Ghanaians that Africans have the ability to hire and employ white individuals, thus changing the perception and showcasing a different perspective.

“Shalima was more or less hired. So it means she was working for us. She waas not here to come and dictate or instruct us about our political future. About our governance. She was actually instructed by us on what to say and what to report. Now the question is, am I not showing Ghanaians that it is very possible to hire white people to do any sought of job that we want? That’s the sought of example am trying to show. [That’s what you were trying to do?] Yes am trying to do…”, Cheddar explained.

The Ghanaian Presidential Aspirant, who recently revealed his identity and political ambitions, has engaged in various interviews throughout the week.

While discussing his wealth and ability to govern, he has faced criticism and scrutiny from the public.

Despite the challenges, he encourages Ghanaians to shift their focus towards the positive changes he can bring to the nation, rather than dwelling on the origins of his wealth.

He argues that questioning the source of his money is a form of judgment that doesn’t truly acknowledge the hard work and effort he has invested in accumulating his wealth.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosiisen on Tuesday, Mr Bediako emphasised that rather than criticising or questioning those who have achieved great success, Ghanaians should celebrate their achievements and learn from them.

“If someone makes money and decides to spend it, I can’t question him. He can decide to use it for what he wants even if he wants to use his money to buy beer and khebab,” Cheddar stated.

Gov’t cancelling the Convention was God’s will – Cheddar

Renowned figure and leader of the New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, has expressed gratitude to God Almighty for the cancellation of the New Convention event which was slated to take place on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at Black Star Square.

Cheddar recently made a significant appearance at Perez Dome to express his gratitude and thanksgiving.

Having been a dedicated member of the Perez Dome community for 21 years, Cheddar highlighted the importance of his faith and the influence of God in his life.

Despite facing unexpected challenges, including the cancellation of New Convention event due to “unforeseen” circumstances, an event scheduled to take place at the Black Star square, he emphasized that every prayer he directed towards God had been answered.

“ I started fasting the first day of the year, I do it at the beginning of the year, with the church and by myself, so I was praying that let the Convention be successful so that it can reach Africans but I want to tell you this, everything I have asked God he has giving it to me.

“So I was expecting more and just an hour before the event I was told the event was cancelled with helicopters and with men, guns and soldiers, you can’t fight this one you have to step back.

“I went back to God to ask, I thought you said you were going to make the event successful but he said God meant for the event to be cancelled for the event to be successful,” Cheddar stated.

The Convention was to bring together thought leaders in Africa including Professor PLO Lumumba, Peter Obi, Julius Malema, and others to speak on key challenges confronting Africa’s development.

Hours after the cancellation, the leaders of the Convention organized a press conference at Cantonments.

Professor PLO Lumumba said, “We came to Ghana to share a message of hope that Africa needs at this time and there is no better place to begin that message than Accra Ghana.

“It is in Accra that Osageyefo Kwame Nkrumah almost 67 years ago, spoke to the world and said the ‘Independence of Ghana is meaningless until it is linked with the independence of the African continent’”.

He said 67 years later, they were congregating in Accra in the very same place where the founding fathers of Ghana stood to make that statement but they were stopped bizarrely.

Professor PLO Lumumba, however, said, “The message will be served” as the journey of hope “continues with the youth.”

Cheddar reveals how Ghanaian banks refused him loans for his projects

Renowned Ghanaian entrepreneur and founder of the New Force Movement, Nana Kwame Bediako, widely known as Cheddar or Freedom Jacob Caesar, reveals facing loan rejections from certain financial institutions in the country.

Expressing frustration, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar or Freedom Jacob Caesar, voices his disappointment as numerous Ghanaian banks decline his loan requests aimed at supporting his various projects and businesses.

Nana Kwame Bediako holds a diverse conglomerate of businesses under his name.

In an interview on Citi TV, Cheddar indicated that only one bank expressed its willingness to give him a loan, but the bank later collapsed.

The founder of the New Force Movement emphasized that only the World Bank supported and financed part of his projects because he had a partner.

“We have had one bank that has lent us money before, IFC from the World Bank. They lent us money for a part of our building [properties]. When you come to Ghana, we have a lot of banks, from student loans to business advancement, whatever you ask of these banks, they don’t have the money for you. I’m sure we all know this. We don’t have banks supporting us, even if you want to high-purchase a car where you have a job. I have not borrowed money from Ghanaian banks before. I tried, but they won’t give me.”

“There was one Ghanaian bank that took me through a process and took my building documents at that time. I passed all the requirements, and when they got to give me the money, they didn’t, and it took me about two years to hear it has been dissolved,” he told Bernard Avle.

He raised concerns about the reluctance of financial institutions to offer loans to business owners in the country, posing a huge risk to the economy of the country.

Cheddar bemoaned the lack of trust in international financial institutions to loan Africans money.

“My partner had to come in and support. It’s difficult for Africans to benefit from such financial institutions; I don’t think they believe in our capacity. And I also don’t think they believe in the governance that built the economies of our country,” he observed.

Nana Kwame Bediako promised to give hope to the youth if he wins the presidential elections.

“Currently, there’s no hope; that is why we are here.”

According to him, although he has been a faithful attendee for the entire span of the church’s existence, despite regularly attending services, this occasion marked one of the few times he had taken the stage to address the congregation.

“Twelve years ago, I used to sit at the east side when we were in the other Auditorium. Then I moved to this side. The point is, it doesn’t matter where you sit; the message should be heard,” he added.

Why Bernard Avle is trending after Cheddar interview

Citi TV General Manager and journalist, Bernard Avle, is currently under public scrutiny following his interview with founder of The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, widely recognized as Cheddar, on the Point of View show on Monday, January 15, 2024.

The interview got heated as the duo engaged in an intellectual debate. Ghana’s classification as a middle-income country became a controversial topic, and the duo presented opposing views.

Bernard Avle held the position that Ghana is indeed a middle-income country, but Mr Bediako argued otherwise, stating that Ghana is a low-income country.

Mr Bediako argued that since the government run to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for economic assistance through a credit facility worth $3 billion, it is a low-income country.

“They went to beg to save the economy, but you are sitting in front of me, and I know you know a lot about economics, and you are telling me this country is a middle-income country.

“How then do we go so broke that we lost all the cash in our central bank and we had to go to IMF to save us? Ghana is a low-income country,” he stressed.

A much more composed Bernard Avle insisted that “Ghana is a middle-income country.”

Also, Bernard claimed that Mr Bediako said he planned to make Ghana a low-income country, an assertion he refuted.

Following the interview, netizens have shared their thoughts on how the journalist, Mr Avle, interviewed Mr Bediako, who plans to contest the 2024 general elections to become Ghana’s president.

While others believe Mr Avle was a bit too stern and brusque, others noted that Mr Avle has always been an individual who puts his guests on a hot seat, questioning their intellect on issues they plan to resolve or address.

“That Bernard Avle interview with FJC is dripping with condescension. I get that the guy is highly ignorant and comically incompetent, but the interviewer’s posture borders on badgering and belittling,” a user, @enyonvm wrote.

Money wants to worship me – Cheddar claims

Founder of The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, widely recognized as Cheddar, has conveyed the positive and successful relationship he has with wealth, particularly money.

For Cheddar, money is no mere object, but he describes it as if it were a romantic partner. According to him, even when he does not actively seek it, money finds a way to locate him, which implies that his financial success or opportunities are abundant and readily available.

In an interview on Kofi TV with host, Kofi Adoma, he noted that he is currently being served or worshipped by money.

“Money is like a woman; we came to meet it, and we will leave it. Money likes me. Even when I leave it, it finds a way to get to me. It follows me; when I speak, it is close by; and when I sit, it sits. For some people, when they get money, it quickly vanishes.

“I share for everyone to get a portion. I give to the visually impaired, the rich, mothers, paupers and I also know how to spend money very well.

“So money is my girlfriend. Cheddar means money, and now I don’t associate with it and I have moved to Freedom, but money still says it is me; it will serve,” he said.

The footage of the interview that has surfaced on social media comes at a time when Cheddar has recounted the period when he first became a millionaire.

According to the business mogul, he achieved his first million pounds at the age of 21 due to a combination of ventures in the telecommunications sector and a strategic involvement in the scrap business in the United Kingdom.

Cheddar revealed that he utilized $20,000 from his initial million-pound earnings to establish a club in Ghana.

This entrepreneurial move proved fruitful, resulting in a profit of $75,000 after selling the club in 2002.

“The first money I made in England altogether was a million pounds and I was 21. I was working for myself, my company was GT, Global Telecommunications and Utilities I was selling scrap. I had my own office and I two employees.

“I started investments at a very young age and what happens when you make investments is that the money goes away and it feels like you are broke again so it makes you hungry,” he said.

Founder of The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, has made known the meaning of his widely recognized alias, Cheddar.

Cheddar, according to Mr Bediako, means money. He made this known when he conveyed the positive and successful relationship he has with wealth, particularly money, in an interview on Kofi TV with host, Kofi Adoma.

For Cheddar, money is no mere object, but he describes it as if it were a romantic partner. According to him, even when he does not actively seek it, money finds a way to locate him, which implies that his financial success or opportunities are abundant and readily available.

Cheddar and Benard Avle debate heatedly over Ghana’s classification as ‘middle-income country’

Founder of The New Force, Nana Kwame Bediako, widely recognized as Cheddar, engaged in an intellectual debate with Citi TV journalist, Bernard Avle during an appearance on the Point of View show.

During the show, Ghana’s classification as a middle-income country became a controversial topic, and the duo presented opposing views.

    Fact-check

On April 14, 2021, the Ministry of Finance indicated that Ghana continues to be categorised as a “Lower-Middle Income Economy” based on the widely classification of the World Bank and the UN.

“The IMF Fiscal Monitor does not aspire at classifying countries by income level. Instead, it analyses the latest public finance developments, updates medium-term fiscal projections, and assesses policies to put public finances on a sustainable footing. The groupings of economies presented in the Fiscal Monitor’s Methodological and Statistical Appendix serve an analytical purpose only. In this appendix, Ghana is conveniently categorized as a “Low-Income Developing Country (LIDC)”, like other Lower-Middle Income Economies such as Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, Nigeria and others,” the Ministry explained in a statement.

The Finance Ministry made this statement in reaction to reports that Ghana had been downgraded as a “low income country” by the IMF in accordance with its latest Fiscal Monitor.

On its website, the World Bank views Ghana as a Lower-middle income country.

    Determination

The classification of a country as a lower-middle-income nation is typically determined by its Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, which is the total income of a country’s residents, including income from abroad, divided by its population. The World Bank classifies countries into different income groups based on their GNI per capita. As of the World Bank’s classification (2022), the income groups are:

    1. Low-income countries
    2. Lower-middle-income countries
    3. Upper-middle-income countries
    4. High-income countries

For the lower-middle-income category, the World Bank sets a specific GNI per capita range. As of the World Bank’s fiscal year 2022, the threshold for lower-middle-income countries is a GNI per capita between $1,056 and $4,095.

It’s important to note that these thresholds are subject to change, and the World Bank updates them annually based on factors like inflation and currency exchange rates. Additionally, being classified as a lower-middle-income nation does not only depend on income levels but also takes into account other economic indicators and factors such as development and standard of living.

Nana Kwame Bediako, the leader of the New Force, has committed to providing the youth with opportunities to actively participate in the nation’s decision-making processes for selecting leaders if he is elected in the 2024 polls.

Expressing concern about the absence of such opportunities for the youth over the past four decades, Mr Bediako criticized the prevailing practice where politicians exploited them by offering monetary incentives for votes.

In an interview with Bernard Avle on The Point of View on Citi TV, Bediako emphasized the New Force’s dedication to championing the cause of the youth.

He expressed, “We believe that in the past four decades, the youth should have the right to be a part of the decision – how and who is going to lead us and how they are supposed to lead us.”

Mr Bediako pointed out the lack of a young individual with the courage to stand up and become a unifying force between the youth and the government between NDC and NPP over the last four decades.

As he envisions himself as the unifier, Mr Bediako pledged to be a president who provides young people with the opportunity to contribute to the decision-making process in selecting the country’s leaders.

He emphasized the New Force’s initiative to eliminate the practice of enticing youth with money for votes, stating, “So we want to eradicate and get rid of people going to the same youth and giving them money instead, and after that, there is no development, there is no job creation.”

Nana Kwame Bediako, widely recognized as Cheddar has shared the story of how he achieved his first million pounds at the age of 21.

The leader of the New Force Movement, attributed this financial milestone to a combination of ventures in the telecommunications sector and a strategic involvement in the scrap business in the United Kingdom.

During an insightful discussion on the Point of View show on Citi TV, Cheddar revealed that he utilized $20,000 from his initial million-pounds earnings to establish a club in Ghana.

Looking forward, Cheddar, as the leader of the New Force, expressed a commitment to providing opportunities for the youth to actively participate in the country’s decision-making processes and the selection of leaders in the upcoming 2024 elections.

He criticized the lack of such opportunities for the youth over the past four decades, asserting that they were often used by politicians who offered monetary incentives in exchange for votes.

Cheddar announces independent presidential bid for 2024 elections

Ghanaian entrepreneur and New Force Movement founder, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar or Freedom Jacob Caesar, has announced his bid to contest the presidential elections on December 7, 2024.

Faced with challenges in registering his political party, he revealed plans to run as an independent candidate during an interview on The Point of View on Citi TV.

Criticizing the government’s economic management, Bediako pledged to rescue the country from further hardships.

He emphasized his commitment to building a middle-income nation, generating job opportunities for the youth and fostering their active involvement in governance.

“We wanted to register a political party, but they didn’t give us a license. We are still moving with our movement. I’m running in the December polls as an independent presidential candidate. Because they didn’t give us any license or even provisional license. You will see me on the ballot on December 7. The governance of the country is poor, the government is the problem. We need to be responsible for the leaders we choose.”

“In the last 4 decades, between the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party, there hasn’t been any young person who has dared to stand up and say he’s coming. I’m the unifier between the youth and the government. I’m for the people who need change; I’m for the neutral people, and I don’t belong to any political party. We aim to build a middle-income nation by creating jobs for the youth,” he promised.

Reflecting on the unifying role he envisions between the youth and government, Bediako expressed frustration at the lack of young candidates in the past four decades.

His independent candidacy aims to represent those seeking change, devoid of political affiliations.

Promising policies centered on affordable housing, Bediako outlined plans to invest in integrated developments with basic infrastructure, including sewerage, internet, and planning.

Additionally, he pledged to provide loans to graduates for purchasing apartments, emphasizing a focus on charity.

“In our plan for Wonder World, we have a solid development that we want to introduce to universities; it’s called graduates. We will give them loans to buy apartments, which is a charity focus. Ghana is developing affordable homes and they say it’s affordable homes but are charging people $60,000 to $80,000. And these developments are not integrated. We plan to invest in affordable housing, with an integration, and I have to do it right. Affordable housing needs basic infrastructure will be put in place, sewerage, internet, planning, wiring,” Cheddar promised.

Asserting his widespread presence, Bediako stated that he has officers stationed in all 16 regions of the country.

New Force became more powerful after our Convention event was cancelled – Cheddar

The Founder of the New Force Movement and Ghanaian Entrepreneur, Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar or Freedom Jacob Caesar, has expressed that the cancellation of The Convention event, initially scheduled for January 7, 2024, has inadvertently propelled his movement.

The event, which was set to take place at Black Star Square on Ghana’s Constitution Day, was called off just hours before its commencement due to a last-minute government directive, according to the organizers, the New Africa Foundation.

During an interview on The Point of View on Citi TV, Cheddar acknowledged the unexpected turn of events but noted that the New Force Movement has gained significant influence in Ghana.

Responding to the host’s observation that the cancellation brought them considerable publicity, Cheddar affirmed, “I think you are right… The successful event has been based on the cancellation. It went to all parts of Africa, it woke people up.”

Cheddar dismissed claims that the Convention event was intended to unveil his New Force, emphasizing that the goal was to impact people.

He explained, “This event was going to impact based on what they will say. It wasn’t the plan to unveil a New Force. It was because the entity, or whoever decided to cancel the event, needed an excuse.”

He further highlighted that the press conference following the cancellation provided them with a significant opportunity to clarify their intentions to the public.

“We genuinely wanted to bring these people to open the mindset of the youth of Africa. I knew that I would still come in as the man in the mask but wanted people to know when they found out later about the contributions of the New Africa Foundation we bring into the system. This event was going to impact based on what they will say. It wasn’t the plan to unveil a New Force. It was because the entity, or whoever decided to cancel the event, needed an excuse. But even if it was so, would it have been wrong for me to unveil my movement? No, it’s not a crime,” Nana Kwame Bediako asked.

“I don’t think it’s just the cancellation that has helped me to achieve my aim. But the fact that they all agreed for us to do a press conference to explain ourselves actually sent the right message to the people.”

Cheddar reveals plans to bring a panther and some lions to Ghana

Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar
and aspiring for the presidency, has defended his controversial decision to import two tiger cubs into Ghana, which drew criticism for housing them at his residence.

He explained that his intention behind bringing in the tigers was to contribute to Ghana’s tourism industry and demonstrate that such exotic animals can be responsibly kept within the country and the broader African continent.

Cheddar, speaking in an interview with JoyNews on January 12, 2024, emphasised that the inclusion of the tigers aligns with his broader goals, and he plans to expand his collection to include a panther and several lions in the near future.

“For big cats. I just thought that having two tigers in Africa, people in Asia were saying that they will never survive in this part of Africa, which is the west, the east and the north. I was challenged to prove to them that, look, if my goat can survive in Asia, then why can your animals in Asia survive in Africa? So that’s why I went to bid for the animals, bought them, and brought them.

“I brought them because I wanted to create a zoo for them. I thought that creating a shelter for such animals also is part of my accruements, things that I have to do in life, and that’s not the end of it. I want to bring in a panther. I’m going to bring in some lions. I think that in the tourist world, there is more we can do. That industry, the tourism industry, has room for these things,” he said.

The businessman also bragged about his tigers, making Ghana the envy of many nations in Africa because just a handful of African countries have them.

“And I think right now, as we speak in Africa, apart from South Africa, Ghana is the only country that is with these two tigers. When you go to Nigeria, to Kenya, to everywhere, and I think the country should be proud, more so than I am, they should be proud that we have, that maybe we’re about to even breed them,” he said.

He added that these wild animals can even be given to other African countries after they are bred as a sign of unity.

“We’ll be the first country that will be able to give away tigers to countries like Nigeria and Kenya. I’m into unity. I’m into doing all of these things.”

    Cheddar also revealed
that the two tiger cubs remain alive and in good health, and a zoo for them has now been constructed.

According to a BBC report from November 28, 2023, Cheddar’s fully grown pet tigers are still housed at his residence in the Wonder World Estate in Accra.

The Agba family, who initially reported to authorities about the presence of the wild animals, remains concerned that the tigers have not been relocated.

As per the report, the court sided with the Agba family, who share a garden with Cheddar, and ruled that the tigers should be moved. The court directed the Forestry Commission, responsible for wildlife, to carry out the relocation within three days in November 2022.

However, lawyers representing the Forestry Commission informed the court that the animals could only be moved once Cheddar completes the construction of an enclosure at another location to house them.

Cheddar confirms he took a loan from the World Bank to finance the No. 1 Oxford Street Hotel

Nana Kwame Bediako, commonly known as Cheddar, has revealed that he once secured a loan from the World Bank to fund the construction of his hotel on Osu Oxford Street, aptly named Number 1 Osu Oxford Street.

During an interview on Joy News on January 12, 2024, he candidly shared the financial hurdles he faced and the eventual success of repaying the loan that played a crucial role in bringing to life the fourteen-story hotel with a capacity of 104 rooms.

Cheddar clarified that he, in collaboration with a business partner, obtained the loan to finance the project situated in Osu, a suburb of Accra.

“I think that Ghana wants to know, ‘how are you funding all of this when you build, they say how are you building all of this?’

“People are not even asking; do you owe some banks? If so, how do you sleep?

“I used to owe the World Bank; they were the first people I decided to borrow from when we were building the number 1 Oxford hotel.

“My partner and I we just wanted that badge; you know myself and my partner and we have managed to pay it off because we realised that we were becoming slaves to the loan; it is a tough thing and now I am quite that free,” he said.

Meanwhile, according to a report by independentghana.com, the development of the Number 1 Oxford Street hotel received partial funding from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a division of the World Bank Group.

Renowned for aiding private businesses in developing nations, the IFC provided investment for the project, which involved two companies, Cola Group and Wonda World Estate, both associated with Cheddar, securing the necessary financial support.

  • We have written to the EC twice, but we have yet to get a response – Cheddar on political party application

We have written to the EC twice, but we have yet to get a response – Cheddar on political party application

Nana Kwame Bediako, an independent presidential aspirant, expressed his intention to establish a political party to pursue his presidential ambitions.

However, his plans faced an obstacle due to what he perceives as the Electoral Commission’s delayed response. The real estate mogul disclosed on JoyNews’ AM Show that his team had completed all constitutional requirements and submitted an application to register his political party with the EC.

Despite fulfilling these requirements, Cheddar, as he is also known, has not received any response from the EC after three months of filing his application.

This is despite the I992 constitution stating in Act 574 (8)(2) that “The commission shall, not later than seven days after the receipt of application, issue to the political party a provisional certificate of registration and shall cause a notice of the application to be published in the Gazette after receipt, inviting objections from any person, concerning the name, aim, objects, constitution, rules, symbols, slogans and colours of the party.”

Nana Kwame Bediako noted that while he has fulfilled all constitutional requirements, the EC has not been forthcoming with a response.

“We do have a manifesto. We have a manifesto, we have a constitution and we have built 16 offices in the 16 regions. We’ve read the constitution and we’ve followed what we had to do—put in the application for a political party—but we were not responded to by the EC.

“After the seven days, when you pay and submit after the seven days, it’s been three months. We wrote a letter again and they haven’t responded,” he said.

Despite the delay in the Electoral Commission’s response, Nana Kwame Bediako remains optimistic about a positive outcome for his political party registration application. While anticipating the EC’s confirmation, he emphasised his commitment to pursue his presidential ambition independently, focusing on crucial issues for Ghana’s development.

“But I hope that the EC can hear me and say that let’s respond to this young man and we’re supposed to give him his provisional license so you know – if they had given us that we’ll be talking about the actual party and using the logos and using maybe our mottos and slogans and stuff like that.

“But since that has not happened, it doesn’t mean that it should stop the conversation or stop the mission or even restrict the vision. We’re still going ahead, we’re still going ahead with the New Force Movement,” he said.

Cheddar urge Ghanaians to pay attention to his message and not his personality

It’s been almost a week since Ghanaian entrepreneur Nana Kwame Bediako disclosed his presidential aspirations. His revelation, especially as the mysterious ‘Man In the Mask,’ has stirred discussions among Ghanaians.

People are now scrutinizing his background and eagerly awaiting insights into his vision for Ghana’s future.

However, there is a segment that has raised concerns about his public image, juxtaposing it with his recent political ambitions.

The 43-year-old has been frequently seen socializing with prominent celebrities, both locally and internationally, including Floyd Mayweather, sparking questions about the alignment of his public persona with his newfound political goals.

This topic surfaced during an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Friday, January 12, 2024.

The man known as Cheddar thinks that people might have had the wrong idea about him.

He claims that instead of living the life of a simple celebrity, “it’s me cherishing my relationships with people and letting them respect my vision.”

In light of this, he asked Ghanaians to shift their focus back to the main points of his speech rather than its auxiliary elements.

“They are just looking at the glittery part and who is the star and all of that. Don’t just concentrate on the messenger, you need to concentrate on the message hence that’s why I came with a mask. Because I was asking the country which one are you choosing? Are you choosing the face that you want to find? Or you’re going to look for the message that this person is bringing?” he quizzed.

On January 7, the mysterious ‘Man in the Mask,’ previously known for his discreet campaign, ‘The New Force,’ stepped into the limelight, revealing himself as the self-proclaimed ‘messiah’ with a vision to rebuild Ghana and Africa.

During an impromptu press conference arranged due to the last-minute cancellation of the Ghanaian government’s rally called ‘The Convention 2024,’ Nana Kwame Bediako assured that he posed no threat.

The intended event in Accra had gathered influential African thought leaders, including Professor PLO Lumumba, Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao from Zimbabwe, and Peter Obi, to engage in discussions about key challenges hindering the continent’s development.

I met Shalimar Abbiusi through Ablakwa – Cheddar on how he met his spokesperson

Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar or Freedom Justice Caesar, the founder and leader of the emerging political force in the country, the New Force Movement, has shared details about how he encountered Shalimar Abbiusi, a repatriated Belgian national.

Formerly serving as the spokesperson for the New Force Movement, Shalimar Abbiusi played a significant role in presenting the activities of the political entity through various social media posts.

However, she faced legal troubles and was charged with acquiring a student residence permit using false declarations, a claim contested by her legal representatives.

Despite the Kaneshie District Court dropping charges against her, she was rearrested and repatriated shortly thereafter.

Addressing the criticism surrounding Shalimar’s involvement in Ghanaian politics and his absence during her legal issues, Nana Kwame Bediako, in an interview on TV3 NewDay, shed light on the circumstances leading to their collaboration.

He revealed that Shalimar became the spokesperson for the New Force Movement because no Ghanaian was willing to take on the role.

“In the beginning of the New Force with the mask and everything, we had been speaking to several people to take various roles. We tried so many people to be the spokespersons, but they were all scared. We were struggling,” explained Nana Kwame Bediako.

He further explained that Shalimar, having been in the country for more than three years and with a background as a presenter for GHOne and a model, was introduced to him by Okudzeto Ablakwa, the North Tongu MP.

The introduction took place at Mepe during a donation event, and their collaboration began after discussing the objectives of the New Force Movement.

“Shalimar was a girl that had been in the country for over three years. She had already worked as a presenter for GHOne and model before I met her. I only met her at Mepe when we went to do the donation there.

“I met her through Hon Ablakwa (North Tongu MP). We started talking after, so she asked what she can do after she heard about what we’re doing,” he said in the exclusive interview.

$300k was spent on ‘cancelled’ The Convention event – Cheddar reveals

Presidential aspirant Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar or Freedom Jacob Caesar, has disclosed that he invested $300,000 in orchestrating the ‘The Convention’ program for his outfit, New Africa Foundation. Unfortunately, national security halted the event just hours before it was set to commence.

Cheddar lamented that his entire investment in the program, designed to bring renowned African intellectuals to inspire the people of Ghana, was unjustifiably thwarted.

During an interview on TV3 on Thursday, January 11, 2024, the presidential hopeful stated that the event organizers received $150,000, while the remaining $150,000, potentially more, was allocated for bringing in speakers, artists, and other logistical aspects of the event.

“I am kind of confused and I trying to ask the nation, I want the nation to put themselves in my shoes. Because I’m going by the law… and I go and invest $300,000 into an event, into something that would inspire the nation and they just come and tear it down.

“… we even asked for protocol help and then paid for security and 80 policemen were assigned. But they came back the very day and started pulling everything down… I don’t know how to say it for you to understand my pain because that investment can also take care of my children,” he said.

He added, “The show itself was costing us $150,000 and then all the other logistics, bringing people in and other people who are performing and all of that, cost the rest.”

Cheddar also said that the treatment of the African leaders who were in the country to speak at his event has dented the image of Ghana.

“We brought four Africans who have spoken and spent three decades of their lives fighting for a better Africa, we brought them into Ghana to speak to the youth and to speak to the continent, the person that was behind the event is a Ghanaian… watch how all of us were attacked,” he said.

All the people we contacted to be spokesperson were sacred – Cheddar explain why he settled on a Belgian

Nana Kwame Bediako, the leader of The New Force, has disclosed the rationale behind selecting Belgian national Shalimar Abbiusi as the spokesperson for his political movement.

Approximately three months ago, Shalimar publicly revealed her association with The New Force, attracting significant attention primarily due to the mystery surrounding the movement’s founders.

Following this announcement, there arose a sense of curiosity among many, questioning the decision to have a Belgian individual as the spokesperson for a movement aspiring to become the third political force in the country and provide hope to its citizens.

    Shalimar Abbiusi

Amidst dissatisfaction and queries, Nana Kwame Bediako, widely known as Cheddar and the leader of The New Force, addressed the concerns during an interview on TV3’s New Day Show on Thursday. He revealed that the choice of Shalimar Abbiusi as the spokesperson came after several unsuccessful attempts to secure a Ghanaian representative.

According to Cheddar, numerous potential Ghanaian candidates declined the role out of fear of potential victimisation by those in power, a factor that led to the selection of Shalimar Abbiusi.

“We tried so many people to be the spokesperson but they were all scared. They didn’t want to use their faces. Many Ghanaians. We were struggling, Alfred.

“Shalimar was a girl who had been in this country for three years. She already worked for GHOne. I only met her at Mepe when we went to do the donation. I met her through Honourable Ablakwa and she asked what she could do when she found out about the movement. Then I said maybe you could speak for us because we are not getting anyone to do it at this point,” he said.

Tragically, Shalimar Abbiusi faced adversity after disclosing her role as the spokesperson for The New Force.

On Monday, December 4, 2023, Ms. Abbiusi was apprehended by officers from the National Investigations Bureau (NIB). The arrest was reportedly based on a lack of evidence to substantiate her work permit, immigration documents, and her association with The New Force.

While initially released, she was later rearrested and marked for repatriation by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

Shalimar’s repatriation took place on December 19, 2023, aboard Air Brussels Flt. No. SN 319, returning her to her home country. In the wake of these events, she has hinted at revealing the circumstances surrounding her arrest and deportation from Ghana in the near future.

Expressing her sentiments in a Christmas message shared on her social media accounts, Miss Abbiusi expressed gratitude to her supporters while accusing Ghanaian authorities of treating her unjustly.

I had a dream and God told me to contest – Cheddar on his Presidential Ambition

Founder of #TheNewForce, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Cheddar, has disclosed that his decision to contest the highest office of the Presidency stems from a dream he had.

In an interview with TV3, monitored by The Independent Ghana, Cheddar, noted that he had no intention, whatsoever, to contest in any of the country’s elections until he had the dream last year (2023).

“I had a dream and the dream when I woke up, I decided to first of all form a political party and then start my agenda and so it was like a calling and that calling, I realized that I had to do some work.

“So I read the Constitution and I read a little bit. I don’t know anything about politics, whatsoever. I don’t even know how to become an Assemblyman and I said that this is what I’m going to do…I went straight for the seat because that’s what God said; ‘that Go for it, it’s your time. Go for it,” he said.

This comes after the dramatic cancellation of his much anticipated event which was scheduled for January 7, 2024, to unveil him as the face behind #TheNewForce.

Immigration Service could not prove Shalimar did something wrong – Cheddar

Founder of New Force Movement, Nana Kwame Bediako, has asserted that the Ghana Immigration Service failed to produce the alleged forged documents of spokesperson Shalimar Abbiusi, who has been repatriated to her home country Belgium.

“The Ghana Immigration Service could not provide the forged documents of Shalimar Abbisusi,” Nana Kwame Bediako said on TV3 Thursday, January 11.

The Ghana Immigration Service canceled her residence permit and commenced procedures for her repatriation, after featuring in a series of videos about the NewForce.

Prosecutors charged her with obtaining a Ghanaian student permit through false declaration, but she pleaded not guilty.

In court on Tuesday, December 19, the state dropped the charges against her after Assistant Commissioner Adolf Aboagye Asensu informed the court that he had been instructed to withdraw the charges.

“We thought that our message was more important than the messenger. Had you not noticed, we wore a mask? The New Force is a grassroots movement that stands for the renewal and rejuvenation for the people of Ghana. A young woman named Shalimar Abbiusi (Shallie), distinguished for her role as a TV presenter and for her compassion to the plight of Ghanaians, saw this movement and volunteered herself as our lead spokesperson.

“She was not born in Ghana; she chose to come here. She understood the preoccupation that her race might have, as one of our spokespeople. Accepting the possibility of public rejection, she was welcomed with open arms, into our community.Where we saw genuine, heartfelt support for our people, others saw subterfuge.

“Consequently, The New Force, express our profound regret for the reported instances of; abuse faced by Shallie, unwarranted detention for up to seven (7) days, the unwarranted search, and ransacking of her home. The movement acknowledges the strain on her family and sympathizes with their aggrieved feelings over reported gross misconduct and malpractice by trusted officials. Shallie has since returned to the Kingdom of Belgium.

“The New Force stands for the empowerment of people. Therefore, it deeply saddens us, hearing the unsettling circumstances and experiences she had. Shallie’s impeccable conduct is a reminder to the international community about the importance of fully embracing human rights laws, democracy, justice, the presumption of innocence and the burden of proof even in difficult circumstances. An honourable life is not lived without friction.

“We apologise for the disregard of international human rights laws in our Republic of Ghana. In a gesture of accountability, we extend apologies to the Kingdom of Belgium, the EU committee and the international community at large. We hope that you do not retaliate in kind. We hope that Ghana reconsiders their reported misuse of power for political interests and realigns herself with a robust legal framework that preserves our global standing as a country of justice and peace. To us, the integrity of our country and its international reputation is more important than partisan political interest,”a statement issued said.

I paid GHS30k for use of Independence Square not GHS10k – Cheddar

Ghanaian business mogul, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Freedom Jacob Caesar or Cheddar has pointed out what he says are inconsistencies in the response from the government regarding his much anticipated programme, The Convention, which was eventually canceled.

The programme was scheduled to take place on Sunday, January 7, 2024, however, it was abruptly canceled a few hours to its commencement.

A statement was subsequently issued from the Diaspora Affairs Directorate of the Office of the President, explaining circumstances that resulted in the sudden cancellation of the programme.

“We write to revoke immediately the permission granted per our letter No.OP/PH/02 dated November 11, 2024, which approved your request to use the Black Star Square for the above event.

“This decision has been necessitated by an unforeseen State Event scheduled to take place at the venue,” portions of the statement read.

Government also indicated in the statement that it will refund an amount of GHS10,000 paid by Cheddar to the Diaspora Affairs.

Contrary to details in a statement, Cheddar noted that he paid GHS30,000 to the Presidency and not GHS10,000.

“First of all the receipt that we got is GHS30,000 so if the government is showing GHS10,000, it’s minus two-thirds,” he said.

Feeling shortchanged, he questioned the rationale for the part payment of the money.

“Is this how the whole country behaves in everything that we do? With our taxes, with everything that we do?

However, per Cheddar’s further explanations, he was charged for six days, which according to him, included four days which will be used to set up the Independence Square and also, a day for clearing the Independence after the event.

In a document dated 15th November purported to be a receipt issued by the Diaspora Affairs Directorate of the Office of the President, the directorate acknowledged receipt of payment for the Black Stars Square Venue to be used for a programme from the 2nd January to the 8th January 2024.

Payment details are as follows: “Use of Venue 5000 a day for 6 days = GHS 30,000.” Service charge was waived, however, the Directorate indicated that if any other costs are necessary to be made, Cheddar will be duly informed.

Cheddar said the cancellation of the event has left him frustrated.

Bright Simons describes Cheddar as a blend of Megachurch Televangelist and miracle drug salesman

Honorary Vice President of IMANI-Africa, Bright Simons, has described Nana Kwame Bediako, widely known as Cheddar, as a unique blend of a megachurch televangelist and a miracle drug salesman.

This assessment comes following months of speculation, during which Simons was among the first to project that Cheddar might be the mysterious figure behind the mask.

The speculation gained traction as billboards promoting The New Force movement started appearing.

Simons, in an interview with Semafor.com, drew parallels between Cheddar’s aspirations and the characteristics of a modern-day megachurch televangelist and a miracle drug salesman.

He pointed out that Cheddar seemed to be cultivating a cult-like following with the aim of combining aspects of spiritual leadership and commercial ventures.

The article, titled ‘Ghana’s mystery presidential candidate pulls off his mask,’ delves into Cheddar’s persona, tracing the footprint of The New Force movement in Ghana’s political landscape. It covers the skepticism and criticism that followed Cheddar’s confirmation of being the leader of the movement during a recent press conference.

Cheddar, who previously kept his identity concealed behind a mask, revealed himself at the press conference on January 7, 2024. He disclosed his role as the leader of ‘The New Force’ political movement, flanked by prominent political figures from across Africa, including Peter Obi of Nigeria, PLO Lumumba of Kenya, and Zimbabwe’s Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao.

The revelation occurred during an event labeled “The Convention,” organized by Cheddar under the brand name New Africa Foundation. However, the event was abruptly canceled, with the Presidency citing unforeseen circumstances at the widely-announced venue, the Black Star Square in Accra.

Cheddar’s unmasking has sparked curiosity and controversy, with Simons’ comparison shedding light on the intriguing blend of roles that Cheddar seems to be assuming.

As the public awaits further details on Cheddar’s political agenda and vision, the dynamics surrounding this enigmatic figure continue to captivate both skeptics and supporters alike.

Make Shatta, Stonebwoy, and Sarkodie ent. ministers—Sonnie Badu on Cheddar’s presidential bid

Renowned Ghanaian musician Sonnie Badu shared an intriguing comment after Nana Kwame Bediako revealed his involvement with The New Force political movement.

Badu congratulated Cheddar for his bold move in addressing the challenges faced by Ghanaians through this political agenda.

In a seemingly playful manner, he humorously expressed his desire to be appointed as the Minister for Youth and Sports if he were to run for the presidency in the future.

Sonnie Badu also lightheartedly suggested roles for other artists like Shatta Wale, Sarkodie, and Kwaw Kesse in his hypothetical government, emphasising that it was all in good fun.

“Cedar, Asem ben nie? BEDIAKO, you are literally living your name… Well, I want ministers of youth and sports so I can travel with the Black Stars, and please give ministers of entertainment to… Nii Amah, Livingston and Obidi… Then give Agriculture to Kwaw Kese, I will help him find all fertile grounds to plant intampi… Just kidding… But on a serious note, Congratulations my brother; it’s a bold step,” he wrote on his Instagram page.

Cheddar officially revealed himself as the driving force behind The New Force political movement after the last-minute cancellation of the convention programme at Independence Square due to unforeseen circumstances.

The announcement sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some expressing doubts about his chances of leading the country.

Don’t allow yourself to be taken for a fool—Nana Yaa Brefo to youth about Cheddar’s ‘New Force’

Outspoken media personality Nana Yaa Brefo has offered a word of caution to the youth, advising them to exercise extreme care in choosing the political movements they support leading up to the 2024 general elections.

She emphasised the critical need for Ghanaians, particularly the youth, to be vigilant and thoughtful in their support choices, as it could have potential negative impacts on their lives in the future.

Nana Yaa Brefo’s remarks came in response to Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, officially revealing himself as the force behind The New Force political movement.

Urging the general public to be cautious about the political movements they endorse, she emphasised the importance of avoiding future regrets.

“What was Cheddar saying? We should be very vigilant, especially the youth. Don’t allow anyone to take you for a fool. It was Constitution Day, right? So in everything, you should think very deeply before you decide to put yourself into anything. In anything, be it movements, foundations, charity revolutions or whatever, think twice before subscribing to it.

She further urged Ghanaians to follow international politics to help them make prudent decisions when it comes to electing leaders.

“If you study US politics, you’d realise that the system is trying to push Donald Trump out, but at the same time, they’ve realised he has supporters so it’s becoming someway. Follow international politics and relate it to our own.”

Very shameful! – Jacob Osei Yeboah chides govt over ancellation of ‘The Convention’

A prominent political analyst and commentator, Jacob Osei Yeboah, has expressed strong disapproval and disappointment over the government’s decision to cancel ‘The Convention.’

In a scathing critique, he labeled the move as “shameful” and questioned the rationale behind the abrupt cancellation of the event.

“It’s very shameful for Ghana. What happened was shameful and a blemish on us as a people.”

He conveyed that he had previously encountered similar political maneuvers and plots aimed at undermining and besmirching his reputation.

“I have experienced the same destructive mechanism of the duopoly for the past 14 years, since 2010. The sad thing is that Ghanaians will look on because partisanship, patronage and such a selfless sacrifice to help better the lives of citizens will be stopped by the duopoly.”

Continuing, he mentioned that the President had promised to safeguard the freedom of assembly and association during his Constitution Day address.

He added that contrarily, the scrapping of the event on Sunday sends a different message, and it is something that every Ghanaian ought to denounce.

His comments is in reaction to the cancellation ‘The Convention,’ a programme organised by Ghanaian business mogul, Nana Kwame Bediako, popularly known as Freedom Jacob Caesar or Cheddar

The Diaspora Affairs Directorate at the Office of the President revealed that it prevented organisers of the pan-African event, ‘The Convention’ from going ahead with the ceremony on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at the Black Star Square due to a state event at the same venue.

The organisers of the event, the New Africa Foundation, were directed to cancel the event at the last minute despite receiving approval in November 2023.

Speakers for the event included Professor P. L. O. Lumumba, Julius Malema, Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, and Peter Obi.

Deputy Director of the Diaspora Affairs Directorate at the Office of the President, Dr. Nadia Adongo Fynn, said in a statement that the decision was because of an “unforeseen” state event scheduled to take place at the venue.

“We write to revoke immediately the permission granted per our letter No.OP/PH/02 dated November 11, 2023, which approved your request to use the Black Star Square for the above event.”

“This decision has been necessitated by an unforeseen state event scheduled to take place at the venue. Under the circumstances, the amount of ten thousand Ghana cedis (GHc10,000.00) paid by your office for the use of the venue will be refunded. We regret any inconvenience this may cause,” Dr. Nadia Fynn added in the statement.

“That is a damn lie!”- Watch how Dr Arikana defended Cheddar against rumours concerning his political ambitions

Dr Arikana Chihombora-Quao, alongside notable figures such as Patrick Loch Otieno Lulumba of Kenya, Peter Obi of Nigeria, and Nana Kwame Bediako, expressed her sentiments in a press conference following the cancellation of the Convention titled “Igniting the Voices of Africa.”

Addressing the speculation surrounding the event’s cancellation, Dr Chihombora-Quao revealed, “I feel strongly that I should make this comment. As I was coming here, I got a call from one of my Africa diaspora who is a Ghanaian, who actually came to Ghana from the United States because I was coming here.”

She continued, recounting the rumour she had heard: “He said, Ambassador, I heard a rumour that the reason why the event was cancelled was because the young man who was sponsoring it is a millionaire, and he has political ambitions.”

In response, Dr Chihombora-Quao clarified her stance, stating, “I can tell you as clearly and plainly as I can that I never heard the conversation about him being a millionaire. I never heard the conversation about him having political ambitions.”

Highlighting the nature of her interactions with Nana Kwame Bediako, she emphasized, “The time I have spent with him has had more to do with entrepreneurship and the possibilities. So for those who are saying we are here to support him further his political ambitions, that is a damn lie.”

She elaborated on the focus of her discussions with Nana Bediako, stating, “Certainly for my interactions with him, Nana Bediako, have been about entrepreneurship and the possibilities of what we can do if the Africa youth could be empowered and how we can raise money to support African youth so they can build the Africa that we want. That’s all the conversation that I have had. Anything else, I do not know.”

Explaining her initial hesitation and subsequent acceptance of the invitation, Dr Chihombora-Quao said, “When the invitation came, I did not know him, but I had to do homework. What got me to accept the invitation is his age and the fact that he is a youth. Because if we do not support our youth, then who is going to support them.”

#TheNewForce: I come with a good purpose, and a great vision – Cheddar speaks after cancellation of ‘The Convention’

The mysterious ‘Man in the Mask,’ identified as Nana Kwame Bediako, who revealed himself on Sunday, January 7, 2024, has indicated that he has come to save Ghana.

Stepping into the spotlight at an impromptu press conference prompted by the last-minute cancellation of the ‘Convention 2024’ rally organized in Accra by the Government of Ghana, Kwame Bediako found himself addressing a situation where influential African thought leaders, including Professor PLO Lumumba, Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao from Zimbabwe, and Peter Obi, had gathered to discuss critical challenges facing the continent’s development.

In response to the unexpected turn of events, Kwame Bediako asserted his fearlessness, emphasizing that he was not a person to be intimidated by the circumstances. The hastily convened press conference became a platform for Bediako to express his resilience and determination, despite the setback of the canceled rally that had brought together prominent minds to deliberate on pressing issues affecting Africa’s progress.

“I am nothing to be scared of. I came to you as your salvation. I don’t invest in myself alone. I am investing in you,” he said, adding later on that he has a great vision for both Ghana and Africa.

Sounding rather poetical, Bediako, the founder of ‘The New Africa Foundation,’ said he has for the past 21 years dedicated himself to the service of the nation.

“We need to educate. We need to uplift our children. We need to voice out to them. You are about to find out about this man in the mask because I never spoke a word, you were looking for me. I didn’t tell you whether I am into politics, whether I am an evangelist, whether I am a conventionist or a revolutionist. After this day, you will have to wait for me to share my policies and my visions with you.

“And if I’m the reason why the country or the government is not happy about these great voices coming to educate not only Ghana, but also Africa, then I take this moment to sacrifice myself, to unveil myself, because I have much respect for these great leaders beside me. I would have taken my own time to tell you that I am. But for this very moment, I am sacrificing myself to let you know that I’m that man.

“But I’m that man with a good purpose, with a great vision. I have a plan, and I have a vision for this nation. And not only this nation, I have it for Africa too. But I know Africa is the next biggest thing because out of all the continents that have been developed in this world, there is only one continent that is not developed and I am sent to do that,” he said to applause from the gathering.

He passionately discussed the significance of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding as fundamental pillars for constructing genuine wealth. He underscored the importance of extracting value from one’s surroundings, emphasizing the role of these key elements in the process.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on January 7, 2024, the 43-year-old disclosed his identity as the long-awaited ‘Man in the Mask.’

Flanked by prominent political figures across Africa, including Peter Obi of Nigeria, PLO Lumumba of Kenya, and Zimbabwe’s Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao, he explained that the revelation was prompted by unforeseen circumstances leading to the cancellation of the much-anticipated “The Convention” event at the Black Star Square in Accra.

    What Cheddar said:

“I am nothing to be scared of. I came to you as your salvation. I don’t invest in myself alone. I am investing in you,” he said of his plans for Ghana and Africa.

“We need to educate. We need to uplift our children. We need to speak out to them. You are about to find out about this man in the mask because I never spoke a word; you were looking for me.

He emphasised that the events of January 7 had given him enough reason to disclose his political identity.

“And if I’m the reason why the country or the government is not happy about these great voices coming to educate not only Ghana, but also Africa, then I take this moment to sacrifice myself, to unveil myself, because I have much respect for these great leaders beside me.

Social media platforms went into overdrive in the evening of January 7, 2024, when an event rumoured to be the unveiling of the leader of The New Force political movement at the Black Star Square was halted by National Security operatives and officials from the Ghana Police Service.

Over the last week, flyers and billboards in some parts of Accra advertised an event dubbed “The Convention.”

Distinguished guests, including former Nigerian presidential aspirant Peter Obi, President of the Economic Freedom Fighters of South Africa Julius Malema, one-time Director of the Kenya School of Law P.L.O. Lumumba, and former Permanent Representative of the African Union to the United States Arikana Chihombori-Quao, were present at the event. Musicians such as Efya, Stonebwoy, and Wiyaala were scheduled to perform.

On Sunday, videos circulated on social media showing the event grounds being set up, sparking rumours that it was the unveiling of “Man Behind the Mask.”

However, by 6 p.m., reports from GHOne’s Twitter handle indicated that the organisers were forced to cancel the event. Helicopters, suspected to be manned by National Security operatives, were seen flying around the venue.

Additional videos on social media showed supporters being prevented from accessing the grounds, with allegations on Twitter suggesting that special guests and artists scheduled for the event were forced to return to their hotels by Ghana Police Service and National Security officials.

  • Why World Bank invested about $17m in Cheddar’s No. 1 Oxford Street building

Why World Bank invested about $17m in Cheddar’s No. 1 Oxford Street building

It has come to light that the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation (IFC) played a pivotal role in financing the groundbreaking Number One Oxford Street Hotel & Suites in Osu, a US$51.4 million aparthotel project facilitated by the enterprising Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Freedom Jacob Caesar or Cheddar of the Kwarleyz Group.

This transformative investment not only reshaped Ghana’s hospitality landscape but has also sparked conversations about the evolving dynamics between traditional hotels and the burgeoning aparthotel trend.

A recent tweet by Bright Simmons brought attention to the IFC’s substantial contribution, providing about $17 million, equivalent to one-third of the project’s costs.

“The World Bank’s IFC financed ~1/3rd of the cost of this swanky ~$50m aparthotel built by maverick Ghanaian investor, Cheddar. Aparthotels/serviced apartments are a threat to hotels in Ghana but not uniformly. Occupancy for 4 & 3 star hotels have dropped massively but not 5-stars,” he wrote.

This investment stands as a testament to the growing influence of aparthotels, which blend the convenience of apartments with the luxury of hotels.

Managed by service operator Ascott, the Number One Oxford Street Hotel & Suites is set to redefine long-stay accommodations in Ghana.

The Independent Ghana verified Simmons’ information, which aligns with the IFC’s official documentation. The extensive project, jointly undertaken by Wonda World Estate (WWE) and the Cola Group, boasts a strategic location, offering 104 apartments, 4 penthouses, retail and leisure spaces, basement parking, and upscale amenities like a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, gym, and spa.

The IFC’s environmental and social review in 2017 ensured the project adhered to rigorous standards in areas such as human resources, labor conditions, health and safety, waste management, and stakeholder engagement.

As the world-renowned IFC continues to champion innovative projects like Cheddar’s aparthotel, the hospitality industry in Ghana is undergoing a paradigm shift.

The investment not only reflects a changing consumer landscape but also signifies the growing importance of alternative accommodation options in Ghana’s dynamic hospitality market.

Cheddar’s No. 1 Oxford Street building a threat to hotels in Ghana – Bright Simmons

Vice President in charge of research at the IMANI Centre for Policy and Education, Bright Simmons, has raised concerns about the impact of aparthotels, exemplified by Cheddar’s No. 1 Oxford Street, on the hotel industry in Ghana.

Aparthotels, such as No. 1 Oxford Street, blend apartment and hotel features, allowing occupants flexibility without fixed contracts, according to Simmons.

Situated strategically in Osu, Accra, No. 1 Oxford Street offers retail and leisure spaces, basement parking, a swimming pool, restaurant, bar, gym, and spa.

Simmons broadened his assessment beyond a single building, highlighting all “aparthotels/serviced apartments” in the country as contributors to the challenge faced by traditional hotels.

He revealed that due to the attractive nature of aparthotels in the global investor market, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank which helped finance the No. 1 Oxford Street is also supporting two additional aparthotel projects, both developed by the Mohinani Group in Ghana.

Simmons expressed concerns about the growing influence of aparthotels, particularly in the mid-range segment, impacting the traditional hotel sector. Over the past seven years, he noted a significant drop in the occupancy rates of four-star and three-star hotels in Ghana, from 60% and 62% in 2014 to 45% and 35% in 2023, respectively.

He attributed this decline to the competitive advantage of aparthotels, offering better value for money and increased convenience for travelers. While five-star hotels are less affected, Simmons suggested they might also face challenges in the future.

Reportedly, approximately 80% of hotel projects in Ghana are on hold, reflecting the shifting dynamics in the sector, according to Simmons.

This revelation raises questions about the potential impact of internationally funded aparthotels on the local hotel industry and the broader economic implications for Ghana.

The future of the hospitality industry in Ghana hinges on how effectively these two segments can coexist and complement each other.
