I call my music Afrofusion not Afrobeats – Davido

Nigerian music icon Davido has clarified that his music style should be categorized as Afrofusion, distancing himself from the widely-used term Afrobeat.

Afrobeat, famously pioneered by Fela Kuti, has become a blanket term for African music in general, regardless of the specific genre or style.

Davido expressed frustration at this labelling trend, noting that artists across various musical spectrums often get classified under Afrobeats, whether they lean towards R&B akin to SZA or Summer Walker, or rap styles reminiscent of Drake.

Many African musicians share this sentiment, feeling confined by the overarching categorization of Afrobeats regardless of their unique musical expressions.

Notably, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Fireboy had previously criticised this classification.

Speaking on the Business Untitled Podcast, Davido emphasised the global acceptance of African music, especially by the UK and later the US, which initially termed it Afrobeats.

Despite the convenience of having a genre label, Davido stressed that his music, which he terms Afrofusion, encapsulates a blend of influences that extend beyond a singular genre.

“The first place that accepted African music outside Africa was the UK before America later joined. The UK termed African music Afrobeats. I don’t get offended when we’ve been categorised as Afrobeats. I mean, we need a genre.

“It could be R&B or Afropop. I call my music Afrofusion but I’m not big on ‘O put Afrofusion on my song.’ I know how long it took for African music to become mainstream,” Davido stated.
His stance reflects a broader conversation within the African music industry about the need for nuanced genre distinctions to better represent the diverse musical landscape.

Nigerian artist Davido has shared insights into his relationship with his wife, Chioma Avril Rowland, revealing that they met when he was facing financial challenges.

Contrary to the common narrative of struggling to find genuine love amidst fame and wealth, Davido considers himself fortunate to have encountered Chioma before achieving celebrity status.

He believes that meeting her during that period was crucial, as it allowed him to establish a genuine connection without the pressure of wealth influencing their relationship.

Davido also expressed gratitude for having a close-knit circle of friends who knew him before he became famous, highlighting the importance of authenticity in his relationships.

In his words; “I have a friend, anytime I am on the phone with my wife, he would say he has everything in the world, but a wife is what he is missing. I met my wife before I had money, but I was telling myself if I didn’t meet her before then and now I am single and I meet a girl, it wouldn’t be the same. I would feel the lady is talking to me because I am Davido and I have money.

“My success is when I see people around who were there when I had nothing and they see me now, that’s the feeling, not like when you blow up and start hanging out with a new set of people. You need to keep the people that were there with you since grinding.”

Reflecting on his early days, Davido expressed the significance of meeting Chioma during a time of financial challenge.

He believes that encountering her before achieving fame was crucial, as it allowed their relationship to blossom without the complications of wealth and status.

Davido highlighted the difficulty he might have faced in considering marriage later on, suspecting that women might be drawn to him solely for his success.

He emphasised the joy of having a close circle of friends who knew him before his fame, contrasting it with the notion of forming relationships with new acquaintances after becoming successful.

“I have a friend, anytime I am on the phone with my wife, he would say he has everything in the world, but a wife is what he is missing. • Davido agrees to settle breach of contract case with Brownhill Event out of court

Davido agrees to settle breach of contract case with Brownhill Event out of court

Nigerian music sensation David Adeleke known widely as Davido and event organizers Brownhill Event have reached an agreement to resolve their breach of contract case without going through court proceedings.

The dispute arose when Brownhill Event, led by former President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick, took legal action against Davido for his absence at the annual Warri Again concert despite being paid and signing necessary contracts.

According to a report by Guardian Nigeria, Davido will pay Brownhill Event CEO N30,000,000 (approximately $21,262) as part of the consent judgement, contributing to the claimant’s legal expenses.

As per the settlement terms, Davido will perform at the 2024 Warri Again concert scheduled for October 4 in Warri, Delta State.

The $94,500 previously paid to Davido for the last concert will serve as consideration for his upcoming performance at the event.

Additionally, Brownhill Event will provide a private jet, accommodation, and other logistics for Davido’s performance, as stipulated in the settlement agreement.

    Background

The legal dispute stemmed from Davido’s failure to appear at the Warri Again concerts in 2014 and 2019 despite receiving payments.

This led to Brownhill Event seeking reimbursement and eventually filing a breach of contract and defamation suit against the musician in November 2023.

An investigation revealed that Davido’s company had signed a performance agreement for the 2023 edition but failed to honour it due to scheduling conflicts.

The settlement requires Davido to publicly announce the resolution on his social media platforms, acknowledging the settlement and confirming his participation in the upcoming Warri Again concert.

Overall, the agreement marks a significant step towards resolving the contractual issues between Davido and Brownhill Event, paving the way for a successful collaboration at the upcoming concert.

Nigerians ridicule South Africans with Tyla’s ‘Water’ song after AFCON win

A viral video capturing Nigerians celebrating their national football team’s triumph over South Africa in the Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON) has taken social media by storm.

In the footage, jubilant Super Eagles supporters can be seen teasing their rivals by dousing themselves with liquid while chanting along to the popular track “Water” by South African artist Tyla.

The timing of the revelry coincides with Tyla’s recent Grammy win for Best African Music Performance, a victory that has stung some disappointed Nigerians who have vowed retaliation in the upcoming Afcon semi-final match.

Across both nations, the trending hashtag #NGARSA has sparked playful banter as fans exchange light-hearted jibes.

Among the topics of jest, Nigerians have cheekily asserted the superiority of their jollof rice over South Africa’s Bobotie, a traditional spicy mince-meat dish.

Yet, the primary focus of the banter remains on music, with Nigerians championing the distinctiveness of Afrobeats and suggesting that South Africans stick to their signature Amapiano genre—a fusion of hip-hop, soul, and slowed-down house music.

Popular Nigerian pastor Jimmy Odukoya has also joined the jesting by commending Bafana Bafana for their performance despite their defeat, but telling the South African players, “You need water.”

He added, “If it’s any consolation, it’s Grammy water.”

Most South Africans are expected to support the Ivorians as Nigeria faces the hosts in the final on Sunday.

“People tend to go to Ghana more because there are fewer people and space. There is more vacation,” Davido remarked in an interview.

However, Davido also acknowledged Nigeria’s unique dynamic, which offers a blend of both positive and negative aspects.

In a recent interview, Nigerian superstar Davido offered his unique perspective on the cultural distinctions between Ghana and Nigeria, likening them to two iconic American states: New York and California.

He went on to elaborate on the appeal of Ghana, describing it as a preferred destination for those seeking a more laid-back atmosphere and ample vacation opportunities.

“The difference between Nigerian and Ghana. Let me just explain. Nigeria is New York, Ghana is calm, California.”

“So what happens is that people tend to go to Ghana more because there are fewer people and space. There is more vacation,” Davido said.

  • Grammy Awards benefitted from popularity of Nigerian nominees – Adesope

Grammy Awards benefitted from popularity of Nigerian nominees – Adesope

Nigerian media personality Adesope Olajide has expressed his frustration with the organisers of the Grammy Awards for what he perceives as mistreatment of Davido during the 66th awards ceremony.

In a video, Adesope voiced his belief that the Grammy Awards prioritize benefiting from African artists rather than truly elevating them.

His disappointment stemmed not only from Davido and Burna Boy’s losses in the Best Global Music Album and Best African Music Performance categories but also from the handling of Fela Kuti’s ‘Water No Get Enemy’ during the ceremony.

Adesope expected Tyla’s ‘Water,’ the song for which she won an award, to be played instead.

“I’ve always said that the Grammy Awards is not our thing. They don’t understand us. They don’t understand our culture, they don’t understand our music. They’re never gonna get it. Don’t get it twisted. The Grammy will never get anything that has to do with African music, African popular music and Afrobeats. They will never get it,” he said.

He reiterated that the Recoding Academy made a lot of gains from Davido while the ‘Unavailable’ hit maker went home with no award.

“As an Afrobeats fan, I am heart-broken. Grammy Awards benefited from the promo, I told them. Burna Boy I told them. The Grammy Awards and the Recording Academy benefited from the popularity of the Nigerians that were nominated, Davido and Burna Boy, especially the last one week what Davido did for the Grammys and al those interviews and promos they used him for marketing purposes and knowing fully well that s they do it, they were going to stab him in the heart and they completely used him and dumped him,” he noted.

To cap all, Adesope wants African musicians to stay away from the Grammys.

“I was just about to post to say this is over to the Headies now. African artistes, Afrobeats artistes, you all need to redraw yourselves from submitting your songs to the Grammys,” he said.

At the 66th Grammy Awards held on Sunday, February 4, 2024, South Africa’s Tyla achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first artist to win the Best African Music Performance category in the scheme.

The newly established category aims to acknowledge recordings that incorporate unique local expressions from various regions across the African continent, emphasizing regional musical traditions in terms of melody, harmony, and rhythm.

Tyla clinched the award with her song ‘Water’ at the 66th Grammys, surpassing competitors such as Asake & Olamide (Amapiano), Burna Boy (Citi Boys), Davido ft Musa Keys (Unavailable), and Ayra Starr (Rush).

However, Nigerian artists Burna Boy and Davido faced disappointment not only in the Best African Music Performance category but also in the Best Global Music Album category, where they failed to secure the prize.

This outcome has sparked discontent among some Nigerian music enthusiasts and stakeholders like Adesope, who feel that their artists have been unfairly treated.

In a surprising turn of events, Nigeria’s Ayra Starr, Asake, and Olamide contributed to a total of 10 nominations, but the country faced disappointment as none of its artists secured wins in the 4 nominated categories.

Tyla emerged victorious in the maiden African Music Performance category.

Davido ‘snubbed by Grammys’ as he bags zero awards after three nominations

Renowned Nigerian artist Davido, recognized for his contributions as a singer, songwriter, and record producer, faced disappointment as he lost all three of his Grammy Awards nominations.

The setback occurred shortly after his nomination in three distinct categories, including Best Global Album for his latest release, “Timeless.”

His other two nominations were in the categories of Best African Performance for the track “Unavailable” and Best Global Music Performance for the song “Feel.”

Despite the anticipation and excitement surrounding his first-ever triple Grammy nomination, Davido unfortunately left the ceremony without any accolades.

However, South Africa’s latest budding talent, Tyla has won her first ever Grammy for Best African Performance for her smash hit song, ‘Water’.

Tyla’s ‘Water’ won above other hit songs in the Best African Music Performance Grammy with songs such as Nigerian singers: Davido’s ‘Unavailable,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ and Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush.’ not being a match.

The 22 year old picked up the award, presented at the Grammy Award Premiere Ceremony at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.

Forgive me; I am innocent – Lil Frosh pleads with Davido for a second chance

Nigerian singer, Lil Frosh, born Sanni Goriola Wasiu, vehemently denies four-year-old abuse accusations made by ex-girlfriend, Gift Camille, aka Cute Gemini.

The artist claims the allegations were fabricated, asserting that Gift intentionally set him up to damage his career.

Seeking redemption, Frosh pleads with Davido to reconsider and grant him an opportunity to rejoin DMW.

In a recent Instagram post, Frosh responded to rumours suggesting Gift’s involvement in framing a male TikToker.

He emphasises his innocence and the impact the false accusations had on his career.

The singer recounts a conflict fueled by Cute Gemini’s disdain for his mother, leading to an incident he deeply regrets.

Frosh admits to apologising for the altercation but contends that the subsequent allegations arose from Gift’s allergic reaction, which she used to accuse him of abuse.

Expressing the toll on his career and reputation, Lil Frosh appeals for a second chance, asserting his innocence and blaming the false narrative for his dwindling fame.

He pleads with Davido to reconsider, emphasising the personal and professional setbacks he has endured due to the controversy.

In his heartfelt plea, Lil Frosh writes, “I thank God for the opportunity that just presented itself; God knows I did not beat Gemini. I was framed, blackmailed, and after all I paid, I still can’t get my career back because of the lies that were told against me.”
The artist narrates the peak of his career, the subsequent downfall, and the emotional turmoil he experienced, urging fans to support his cause and join him in appealing to Davido for a second chance.

    See post below:

“I thank God for the opportunity that just presented itself,God knows I did not beat Gemini. I was framed I was blackmailed, and after all I paid. I still can’t get my career back because of the lies that was told against me. Nobody gave me listening ears, I tried to explain to my BOSS @davido but he didn’t want to listen because he has zero tolerance for hitting women. Please guys help me I am innocent, help me beg Davido to give me a chance again, Nigerians God bare me witness I am innocent. See how everything started on her face, it started with a reaction that caused a boil, we even went to the pharmacy to check what happened to her, sadly after medications the conditions worsened and when it became really big they turned the story that I hit her, and presented these pictures as evidence, I tried to explain nobody wanted to hear me out. That was the peak of my career, I begged they refused to stop, they collected money and left me empty, NO LABEL,NO LOVE, turned my fans against me, turned Nigerians against me, at a point I almost ended it all, seeing the people I started music with become way bigger than me, my life was a bad news, no motivation anywhere, please guys help me beg @davido for a second chance.”

Davido triumphs again as he sells out London’s O2 Arena for “Timeless Tour” finale

In a spectacular achievement, acclaimed Afrobeats sensation Davido, also known as David Adeleke, has once again accomplished a sold-out feat at the iconic O2 Arena in London.

The confirmation came via a post on X (formerly Twitter) by “The O2”, announcing that the multi-award-winning artist has successfully sold out the renowned venue in anticipation of his concert on January 28.

Scheduled as the grand finale of his “Timeless Tour,” Davido’s headline event at the 20,000-capacity O2 Arena on January 28, 2024, marks a triumphant return to the historic venue.

Notably, this performance follows his groundbreaking achievement in 2019 when he became the first Nigerian solo artist to sell out the O2 Arena.

Initiated in 2023 after the release of Davido’s record-breaking fourth album, ‘Timeless,’ the tour has garnered widespread acclaim.

  • My father forced me to believe in God against my own will – Spyro

My father forced me to believe in God against my own will – Spyro

Renowned Nigerian singer and songwriter, Spyro, has revealed the challenges of his upbringing in a pastor’s household, emphasizing the immense pressure and expectations that inadvertently strained his connection with religion.

As the son of a pastor, Spyro shared that his childhood was dominated by strict spiritual routines and values, including daily Bible readings and dawn fellowship meetings.

Contrary to the intended purpose of bringing him closer to God, Spyro disclosed that the intense atmosphere had the opposite effect, asserting, “The pressure is not good, I must say. I was forced to do it, so I didn’t know who God was. In fact, my dad made me hate God, the personality of God.”

High court in Delta State rejects Davido’s initial challenge in breach of contract lawsuit

The Delta State High Court in Effurun has rejected the preliminary objections raised by Nigerian-American singer Davido and his company, Davido Music Worldwide Limited.

The objections challenged the court’s jurisdiction in handling a breach of contract suit brought by Brownhill Investment Company Limited regarding the annual ‘Warri Again Concert.’

Trial judge Justice Nduka Obi dismissed both the objection related to the breach of contract case and another objection involving a defamation case against Davido Music Worldwide and Israel Afeare.

In the breach of contract case, the court dismissed arguments by the defendants, asserting that it was not a debt recovery case and was premature.

The court agreed with the claimant’s counsel, stating that the reliefs sought indicated a breach of contract action, not requiring a prior letter of demand.

Regarding the defamation case, the court affirmed its territorial jurisdiction, noting that the claimant’s residence in Delta State during the alleged online defamatory statements establishes the state’s authority to hear the cases.

The court has adjourned to hear all the cases against the defendants. Efforts for an out-of-court settlement were mentioned in court, but the claimant asserted no concrete arrangements were made, as the defendants sought terms unacceptable to the claimant.

Brownhill Investment Company Limited, the claimant, seeks N2 billion (over $150 million) in general damages against Davido.

    Davido’s wealth contributes to his ill-mannered behavior – Bad-Kimmy K

Fashion model Bad-Kimmy K has asserted that Davido, the popular Afrobeats singer, exhibits negative behavior due to his wealth.

In an interview with Pulse Hot Takes, Kimmy K linked this statement to the recent conflict between Davido and fellow artist Tiwa Savage.

Kimmy K suggested that Davido’s substantial wealth contributes to his sometimes ill-mannered conduct, as he tends to hide behind his financial status.

Davido hides under the wealth to perpetuate some very bad behaviour and people don’t call it out as much because he has vibes with giveaways and people actually genuinely love him

Despite his wealth, Davido enjoys widespread love and appreciation for his energetic vibes and generous giveaways, which may shield him from significant criticism.

Commenting on the recent online clash between Davido and Tiwa Savage, Kimmy K opined that such disputes among celebrities should ideally be resolved privately within their circles rather than being aired on social media and involving law enforcement, especially when children are involved.

“That situation with Tiwa Savage should have never made it to the Internet which I think it is a failure within the circle, should have never! because we are talking about kids, kids are involved and these are the things the kids can see later…

Why Tiwa Savage dragged Davido to Nigerian police

Nigerian singer and songwriter Tiwatope Omolara Savage, professionally known as Tiwa Savage, has lodged a complaint with the Nigeria Police Force in Lagos State against her colleague David Adeleke, known as Davido.

The petition alleges a threat to her life and actions that purportedly violated her fundamental human rights. The document, submitted to the office of the Commissioner of Police in Lagos on January 9, 2024, details Tiwa Savage’s accusations, citing threats from Davido since she posted a picture of one of his ‘baby mamas,’ Sophia Momodu, on her Instagram status.

Tiwa Savage wrote: “I am writing to bring to your attention a distressing situation involving myself, Tiwatope Omolara Savage, popularly known as Tiwa Savage and MR. DAVID ADELEKE popularly known as Davido.

“On the 23rd of December, I made a post which included myself and Sophia Momodu on my Instagram Story- a feature on Instagram which allows you to put up a post for twenty-four hours, and MR. DAVID ADELEKE sent messages to my manager who’s also part of his management team that I shouldn’t worry and should never say a word to him and that I was taunting him, uttering very disrespectful, malicious and derogatory words to my person.

“I responded to MR. DAVID ADELEKE’s message and told him not to reach out to me especially as I feel like I have been there for him and his daughter, Imade and more importantly when he lost his son.

“The events of that day have also led to a barrage of calls and messages from our mutual connections, asking me what I did to MR. DAVID ADELEKE that he’s upset that I choose to maintain a relationship with Imade’s mother, Sophia Momodu, who he’s having issues with and also painting the exchange to look like I was the aggressor.

“He has also told our mutual connections to warn me to “becareful in Lagos because he was going to f**k me up”.

“This is beginning to feel like some form of online and offline harassment, not just to me but also to members of my team,” she added.

She continued: “The actions of MR. DAVID ADELEKE are unethical and can be viewed as a direct threat to my rights to life, privacy and dignity of my person as guaranteed in Chapter 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), and are also in contravention of Section 24(2)(a) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015.

“I therefore would like to make this complaint and state that in the event that anything untoward or harmful were to happen to me or any member of my family, I will like the members of the Nigerian Police Force to hold MR. DAVID ADELEKE responsible.”

Social media was abuzz on Saturday, January 6, 2024, following the Instagram unfollowing of both singers, Tiwa Savage and Davido. Speculations arose that this move might be linked to the growing friendship between Savage and Sophia Momodu, the mother of Davido’s first child, Imade.

The singers had a previously amicable relationship, and their children, Imade Adeleke and Jamil Balogun, shared a school and were frequently seen enjoying each other’s company.

Teebillz, Tiwa Savage’s former husband and talent manager, issued a warning to Davido against disrespecting his family due to the ongoing issue between the musician and his ex-wife.

  • Respect your DJs and they will do anything for you! – Nigerian media personality ‘advises’ artistes

Respect your DJs and they will do anything for you! – Nigerian media personality ‘advises’ artistes

Nigerian media personality Adesope Olajide has urged artistes across the world to give DJs the recognition they duly deserve.

According to him, he has observed a stale relationship between musicians and disc jockeys, and this will, in the long run, affect the entertainment industry.

He noted that Niergian artiste Davido goes out of his way to have a cordial relationship with DJs whenever he attends an event where his music is being played.

“We will see Davido walk across the room to go and say hi toy he DJ there. What do you think the DJ is going to do for the next hour. If you don’t like Davido, just go somewhere else because the DJ is going to focus on that person, acknowledgement,” he said.

Adesope noted that DJs and artistes stand a chance to enhance their social capital should the needed recognition be given.

“It is not about money. Forget that. That is what the artiste has to start learning. It is not a fight with the DJs. It is time to recognize them.”

He recounted an experience where an artiste failed to acknowledge a DJ in London who had played his music for close to 45 minutes at an event.

I know a DJ in London who personally told me that he stopped playing the music of a popular musician because the guy walked into the room, they played his music for a couple of times, he stayed on his phone throughout and after about 45 minutes, walked out without saying hello.

In a related event, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mark Okraku Mantey, has entreated Ghanaian musicians to build a good relationship with DJs, since they play a crucial role in their journey to stardom by making their songs popular by playing it always.

The minister warned that a lack of respect or strained relations with DJs could jeopardise artistes chances of making it big in the competitive music industry.

“To the DJs, I know some of your challenges…you say the artistes don’t respect you. .you make them stars and they ignore you afterwards. For the sake of Ghana, please let sleeping dogs lie”

Mr Okraku Mantey also called on all stakeholders in the music industry to unite in promoting the #playghana initiative.
