Ghana is underdeveloped because Ghanaians spend more time sleeping than working – Mr Beautiful

Clement Bonney, known in the film industry as Mr. Beautiful, recently commented on Ghana’s development challenges.

He suggested that the country’s underdevelopment is partly due to Ghanaians spending more time sleeping than working.

In an interview with Amansan Krakye, he noted, “Having spent time abroad, I observed that people there sleep less and work more. In Ghana, the opposite is true—people sleep more than they work. Additionally, abroad, the system is designed to keep people productive, whereas here, it seems people have more control over the system.”

Bonney also criticized the 24-hour economy concept promoted by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), questioning how the country can advance when people’s sleeping hours exceed their working hours.

“In other countries, most activities and events happen in the evening or on holidays because people are busy working throughout the day,” he said. “We spend a lot of time in church and then wonder why we’re struggling economically. If we want to see progress, we need to balance our sleep and work hours better.”

I am the brand new president you need – Bawumia to Ghanaians

The flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has highlighted his commitment to delivering new and innovative solutions for Ghana.

He positioned himself as a “brand new, tear-rubber president,” distinct from his opponent.

Speaking at a community event in the Ofoase-Ayirebi constituency on Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia contrasted his vision with that of John Mahama, the NDC candidate, whom he labeled as a “second-hand, failed president.”

He argued that voting for him would mean embracing a fresh approach to governance with a strong focus on accountability.

“I am not yet a President so if you vote for me, you will get a brand-new tear rubber president but if you vote for John Dramani Mahama you get a second-hand failed president.

“Do you want a brand new or second-hand? If you want brand new then vote for Bawumia and Kojo Oppong Nkrumah,” he stated.

  • Your vote is powerful, don’t joke with it – Prof. Opoku-Agyemang to Ghanaians

Your vote is powerful, don’t joke with it – Prof. Opoku-Agyemang to Ghanaians

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate to NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, has encouraged Ghanaians to assess their voting decisions by considering the current economic climate and how it affects their personal and professional lives.

She emphasized the need for voters, especially those who are in favor of the ruling party, to critically assess the government’s performance and vote for change.

“A political party is not like a family which bonds you by blood. You are free to change parties and vote for a party that can truly improve your livelihood and develop the nation,” she said.

During a large gathering of traders at the Odorkor market in Accra on Monday, as part of her campaign tour across Greater Accra, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the importance of ensuring that voting translates into tangible benefits for Ghanaians.

She stated that the core purpose of voting should be to drive national development across all sectors. In her view, a government that fails to deliver the expected progress and development should not remain in power.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang urged voters to make a prudent choice by supporting the NDC, which she believes will ensure both the safety and advancement of the country.

“The government will come with sweet promises, gifts and money to buy your votes. Take the money because it is your money, but vote against them,” she advised the traders.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the urgency for Ghanaians to come together in the fight against poverty, underdevelopment, and deceit.

She assured that former President John Dramani Mahama is a reliable leader with the experience needed to steer the country away from the difficulties caused by the current NPP government’s mismanagement.

She pointed out that every effort by the NPP government to tarnish the reputation of the NDC’s flagbearer has been unsuccessful, making it evident to Ghanaians who the truly corrupt and incompetent figures are.

“We shall continue to be truthful to Ghanaians,” she said, indicating that the mission of the NDC is to use its experience to get the country back on track with progress.

“We have done it before, so when we say we shall do this and that, we know what we are talking about because we know how to do it better for the benefit of all Ghanaians,” she said.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang appealed to everyone, especially traders, for support to bring the NDC back into power, reset the nation, and collectively build the Ghana we aspire to have.

  • You will always be remembered as the failed president – Akufo-Addo to Mahama

You will always be remembered as the failed president – Akufo-Addo to Mahama

President Akufo-Addo has underscored that John Dramani Mahama’s previous presidency failed to merit a second term and therefore does not deserve another chance in the upcoming 2024 elections.

Akufo-Addo argued that Mahama’s presidency was marked by failure, making him unworthy of a return to office. He criticized Mahama’s efforts to rehabilitate his image, insisting that Ghanaians have not forgotten his poor record.

Pointing out historical precedents, Akufo-Addo highlighted that, besides the late President Atta Mills, Mahama is unique in being the only Ghanaian president to serve just one term due to underperformance.

“Because they believe that we have short memories, we don’t remember their record. We remember their record. The record of failure,” he said.

The President reassured that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will continue to remind the electorate of Mahama’s unsuccessful presidency.

He stated that Mahama’s bid to return to power is an attempt to obscure his past failures, but such efforts will not succeed.

“It is only one President whose record did not merit a second term, and you and I know who I am talking about. It’s the man who wants to come back to save his image because he believes Ghanaians have forgotten his records. Mr candidate, your record cannot be forgotten. We cannot allow that record to be forgotten,” he said.

Akufo-Addo promised that under the leadership of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana will progress and achieve its potential.

Look beyond current hardships when voting – NAPO to Ghanaians

The New Patriotic Party’s Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), has criticized the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration for the country’s current issues.

Speaking at a mini rally at the Effiakuma Police Park in anticipation of the party’s 2024 manifesto launch on Sunday, Dr. Opoku Prempeh condemned the NDC as a relic of the past and positioned the NPP as the party of the future.

He asserted that the NPP is poised to rescue Ghanaians from the problems left by the NDC.

“Don’t vote based on hardship alone. If the current challenges had occurred under NDC’s leadership, I assure you it would have been even more severe.

“During his presidency, without the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia-Ukraine war, he threatened to withhold salaries from teachers and nurses. So, I ask, what would he do in today’s circumstances?”

Several other party leaders and parliamentary candidates also addressed the crowd, underscoring the NPP’s accomplishments and the importance of a decisive victory.

Kennedy Agyapong encouraged unity within the party despite personal frustrations, urging supporters to set aside grievances for the sake of the party’s success.

“I understand the bitterness and frustration that many of you feel, but I can confidently say that I’m the most frustrated person among all. However, we’ve put our differences aside for the love of the party.

The Member of Parliament for Essikado-Ketan, Joe Ghartey, called on Ghanaians to support the vision of Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Opoku Prempeh.

The NPP’s manifesto launch is set for Sunday.

Pursue legal avenues to travel abroad – Nana Adwoa Awindor to youth

Ghanaian media personality Nana Adwoa Awindor has called on Ghanaians seeking to travel abroad to prioritize legal avenues, particularly through education.

Speaking at the 2024 Youth Week celebrations organized by the Assemblies of God Cedar Mountain Chapel in East Legon, Accra, she emphasized the availability of legitimate opportunities for young people to study abroad, especially in the United States, where programs are often accessible through student loans.

Awindor expressed concern over the persistent trend of individuals resorting to dangerous and illegal means to leave the country, such as stowing away or taking perilous journeys through the Northern route.

She highlighted the tragic consequences of these choices, citing recent incidents where people lost their lives attempting such risky endeavors.

“People are dying. Just recently, somebody snuck into a plane and his body was found. People still go on the northern route. We’ve gone to quite a number of places to do advocacies with international organisations. Yet people still go using the northern route even after hearing that people are falling into the ocean and dying. So I would never encourage anybody to travel illegally,” she stated.

Urging young Ghanaians to take advantage of the numerous educational opportunities available, she also stressed the importance of returning to Ghana after completing their studies abroad to contribute their skills and knowledge to the country’s development.

“The most important thing for me is that if you go, please come back, because we need you here,” she added.

Schools will remain opened despite CETAG strike – GTEC

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has dismissed calls from some Ghanaians to close down all Teacher Trainee Colleges in response to the ongoing strike by the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG).

CETAG initiated a nationwide strike on June 14, protesting the government’s failure to implement agreed-upon arbitral awards and other conditions of service.

The nearly two-week strike has disrupted academic activities, leaving most campuses empty.

In an interview with Citi News, GTEC’s Deputy Director General, Professor Francis K. E. Nunoo, emphasized that closing the schools is not an option due to the significant financial impact it would have on the institutions.

“Closing the school has financial implications, as well as their staying in school, as you have said. But we were hoping that we have done quite a lot of work, and quite a lot of all their demands are virtually almost addressed.

“So we were hoping that in the next few days, we will bring to a finality to the issues so that they can go back to school. Students are meanwhile doing their practical work so the practical work needs to be supervised. At least they are getting busy with their practical work.

“We are hopeful that in the next few days, CETAG will see a reason to call off the strike. It is when all these do not yield fruit, and then we will consider it.”

Ghanaians haven’t been harmed by protest against immigrants – High Commissioner to UK

Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK, Papa Owusu Ankomah, has noted that the Ghanaian community in the UK remains largely unscathed by the recent protests that erupted late last month.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr. Ankomah reassured that the Ghanaian community has not experienced significant harm amidst the disturbances.

“Except for one incident where a Ghanaian reported being threatened while taking a bus, there have been no reports of any untoward incidents affecting Ghanaians in the UK,” the High Commissioner confirmed.

Efforts are being made to ensure the continued safety of the Ghanaian community, Mr. Ankomah stated. “Even as of this morning, our officers are calling around the country, speaking with the leadership of the Ghanaian communities, asking for updates and urging them to encourage Ghanaians in the UK to try and be indoors by 7 pm.”

The protests, fueled by an anti-immigrant misinformation campaign, broke out following a tragic stabbing attack in Southport, northern England, which resulted in the deaths of three children.

On Tuesday, the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service announced that approximately 100 individuals have been charged in connection with the violent unrest that ensued. The protests, which began as anti-immigration marches, quickly devolved into disorder and violence.

He also noted that Ghanaians have been advised to stay indoors at night and avoid areas where protests are anticipated.

With the community’s safety being a priority, the High Commission continues to monitor the situation closely and remains in constant communication with local Ghanaian leaders to provide support and updates.

Remain calm while govt works to revive the economy – MP to Ghanaians

Member of Parliament (MP) for Tano North in the Ahafo Region, Dr. Freda Prempeh, has urged Ghanaians to remain patient and hopeful as the government works to rejuvenate the economy in the face of global economic pressures.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Goaso, where she donated 10 motorbikes to aid the election campaign of Mr. Evans Opoku-Bobie, the MP for Asunafo North, Dr. Prempeh highlighted positive economic indicators.

She forecasted that the economy might show signs of improvement by November.

She acknowledged the global economic challenges but pointed out that the government has successfully continued paying public sector salaries and advancing the Free Senior High School (FSHS) initiative, reflecting its dedication to overcoming the economic difficulties.

“We do not queue to buy fuel and food items. They are always available in the market”, Dr Prempeh stated, saying “Elsewhere in the developed world, people continue struggling to buy petrol and food items.”

As the election season heats up, Dr. Prempeh urged Ghanaians to consider the potential risks of changing the government amidst the current economic conditions.

She emphasized that the economy is on a promising trajectory and called for patience with the government to achieve significant improvements and transformation in the country’s socio-economic landscape.

Dr. Prempeh expressed optimism, stating that positive changes are on the horizon and encouraged the public to stay positive and supportive of the NPP government.

“The economy is threading an excellent path of progress, and we must be patient with the government if we desire to see remarkable improvement and transformation in our socio-economic livelihoods”.

“From all indications, things would change for the better very soon. So, let’s be positive and maintain our confidence in the NPP government”, Dr Prempeh stated.

In response, Mr. Opoku-Bobie thanked Dr. Prempeh for her generous donation of motorbikes. He committed to not only retaining the Asunafo North seat but also working towards securing a victory for the NPP in the presidential elections.

Absence of new taxes in mid-year budget a form of relief to Ghanaians – Dep. Finance Minister

Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Stephen Amoah emphasized that the government is putting significant effort into improving the country’s economic conditions.

His remarks respond to the Minority’s critique of Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, who had shown concern for Ghanaians facing economic challenges.

The Minority countered that genuine empathy from the government would have led to more decisive measures to address the worsening economic situation.

According to myjoyonline.com on July 23, 2024, Dr. Stephen Amoah defended the choice to avoid new taxes in the mid-year budget review as a positive move, recognizing the struggles of Ghanaians.

“The fact that we did not introduce or increase any new tax, we are spending within our appropriation. So what kind of relief do they want?” Amoah questioned.

Highlighting initiatives like launching SMEs and investing around GH¢8.2 billion to generate employment and assist entrepreneurs, Dr. Amoah asserted that the government is concentrating on various social measures to offer relief.

He also emphasized that since 2004, the government has allocated roughly GH¢5.4 billion to the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme and the school feeding initiative to alleviate the strain on citizens.

According to the Deputy Finance Minister, the government’s top priority is to stabilize the economy, citing the current inflation rate as a sign of progress towards economic stability.

NIC unveils risk-based capital regulations for life insurance companies

Acting Commissioner of the National Insurance Commission (NIC), Mr. Kofi Andoh, has unveiled plans to introduce a risk-based capital framework for life insurance companies.

He stated that this framework would ensure that the capital held by life insurance companies matches the risks involved in their operations.

Mr. Andoh announced these plans during the 10th anniversary celebration of Prudential Life Insurance in Accra.

He highlighted that the commission would implement several new measures in the sector, including creating a Ghanaian mortality table for life insurance and an actuarial capacity-building program.

These initiatives are designed to boost the profitability of the life insurance market and enhance services for Ghanaians.

Mr. Andoh pointed out that the current mortality table used by Ghanaian life insurance companies does not accurately reflect local market conditions, as it was originally developed for South Africa.

He praised Prudential Life Insurance for its success, attributing it to adherence to local regulations and international best practices.

“It also has a very strong governance and risk management regime that incorporates anti-bribery, corruption, and robust anti-money laundering controls and procedures,” he said.

Madam Jane Mingle, Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Prudential Life Ghana, underscored the company’s dedication to sustainability through initiatives such as the COVID-19 Relief Fund, the Climate and Health Resilience Fund, and the Safe Steps Road Safety Campaign.

She also emphasized the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability, noting that their annual tree-planting campaigns have led to the growth of over 17,000 seedlings, including 2,000 mangrove seedlings at the Obane Ramsar site in Ada Foah.

Emmanuel Mokobi Aryee, CEO of Prudential Africa, remarked that Prudential Life is the only insurance company in Ghana affiliated with the Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT).

He explained that the MDRT is a global association that recognizes top-performing life insurance agents for their high ethical standards and professionalism.

Madam Dorothy Tsidi, Chief Commercial Officer of Prudential Life, detailed the key activities planned for the year-long celebration, including PruRide and PruWalk, annual cycling and walking events aimed at promoting health and wellness, and a legacy sustainability project called PruCares.

Disregard 15% increment in transport fares announcement – GPRTU

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has advised Ghanaians to ignore the recent announcement of a 15% increase in transport fares by the Transport Operators Association.

The fare hike was set to take effect on Monday, July 22.

GPRTU recognized the impact of rising fuel prices on transportation costs but emphasized that any fare adjustments require thorough stakeholder consultation, which has not yet occurred.

As a result, GPRTU has instructed commercial transport operators to continue charging the current fares.

Abass Imoro, the Industrial Relations Officer for GPRTU, stated, “We are not coming out with an increment. We are saying no, it is not just any ordinary increment in fuel which attracts fare adjustment. We recently increased lorry fares so we haven’t gotten there. It is unfortunate, for those who came out with that publication.

‘We know what is happening but we have to go by the laid down system before any increment is done. So the public should disregard the press release by those people who said fares will be increased.”

Imoro expressed hope that the fare increase will be retracted before the scheduled date.

“I will be surprised if drivers have increased the fares and are charging. We strongly believe they will retract it even before Monday,” he added.

77% of Ghanaians believe corruption levels have increased in the past – Report

A 2023 survey conducted by Afrobarometer has revealed that 77% of Ghanaians believe corruption levels have increased in recent years.

Afrobarometer’s comprehensive survey across 39 African nations shed light on widespread perceptions of corruption in various sectors of government, including political leaders, parliamentarians, the judiciary, and civil servants.

The report indicated that 67% of Africans feel their governments are failing to effectively combat corruption.

The report also highlighted a troubling trend, noting that 71% of those who report corruption risk facing retaliation (Dulani, Asiamah, & Zindikirani, 2023).

“Two-thirds (67%) of Africans say their governments are failing in the fight against corruption, and 71% say people who report corruption to the authorities risk retaliation (Dulani, Asiamah, & Zindikirani, 2023).”

The study underscored growing concerns among African citizens about the pervasive nature of corruption within their countries.

It also revealed that nearly six out of ten Africans believe corruption levels have escalated over the past year, particularly in countries like South Africa.

“Given the corrosive effects of official corruption on popular support for and satisfaction with democracy, the news from recent findings about corruption trends is not good: In the eyes of ordinary Africans, the problem is getting worse.

“On average across 39 countries, nearly six in 10 citizens (58%) say corruption levels in their countries increased over the past year, including 82% in South Africa and 87% in Eswatini. Only three countries record majorities who say corruption decreased: Benin (70%), Mali (64%), and Zambia (53%).”

Apologize to Ghanaians for collapsing the economy – Jantuah tells Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has been advised by prominent Convention People’s Party (CPP) member, Kwame Jantuah to apologize to Ghanaians for the economic suffering they endure.

He described the financial struggles that resulted in pensioners staging picketings against their enrollment in the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), which in turn caused multiple business failures and worsened the situation.

In response to a question about the economic difficulties raised during a discussion on Friday, July 19, on TV3’s New Day program, Mr. Jantuah said that since Ghanaians are tolerant, they will probably accept a sincere apology from Mr. Akufo-Addo.

“Is this not the first time pensioners have picked? Ask for forgiveness from Ghanaians because Ghanaians are very forgiving, if you accept you that have done something wrong they will forgive you, apologize to them that you haven’t managed the economy well.”

Regarding good governance, Mr. Jantuah noted that constitutional amendments are necessary to rectify certain flaws in the current governance model.

He claimed, for example, that the president has been granted far too much authority. This needs to change, he said.

“The winner takes all concept, is it helping? Local government, is it not centralized at the upper echelons, local government is not working now. if it was a working station in the district we would have been able to handle it.

“The constitution, this constitution has ruled for over 30 years, there are certain parts of it hurting us today, one of it is executive power, are we ready to look at the executive power?

“I feel that the next president, the first mindset should be how do we have a government of national unity. There are brains who are sitting on the fence who can come and help.”

Bernard Allotey Jacobs praised the Chief of Defense Staff during the “Kokrokoo” discussion program on Peace FM, stating,”he’s spoken well and that’s what the international community, investor community, Ghanaians would want to hear that we don’t record violence in the elections”.

Allotey Jacobs warned politicians not to provoke the Military, stressing “when people are obsessed with power, they know no bounds…People should not provoke the Military. Politicians should not provoke the Military”.

He advised the political parties to “do the appropriate thing” by training “your polling agents very well and don’t allow your monitoring team who move from one polling station to other to behave as if they are electoral officers to dictate to the EC officials at the polling stations”.

Apologize to Ghanaians for disrespecting Nkrumah – NDC to NAPO

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Augustus Andrews Nana Akwasi, has demanded an apology from Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

This demand follows Dr. Prempeh’s controversial remarks about Ghana’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

During a rally at the Kumasi Jubilee Park on July 9, Dr. Prempeh, also known as NAPO, declared, “No president since independence has developed Ghana more than President Akufo-Addo; not even your Kwame Nkrumah.”

This statement has sparked widespread criticism and public backlash.

Critics have questioned Dr. Prempeh’s disregard for the advice of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II to avoid actions that could cause regret for Dr. Bawumia in choosing him as his running mate.

Speaking on GhanAkoma, Nana Akwasi described the Energy Minister’s comments as disrespectful and arrogant.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh failed to heed the advice of his uncle, the Asantehene, who is also the overlord of the Ashanti Kingdom. During the event, I had indications that he paid his school fees. Despite being only three kilometers from the Manhyia Palace to the Jubilee Park, Dr. Prempeh reinforced the perception of his arrogance by disparaging Ghana’s first President in an arrogant posture,” Nana Akwasi remarked.

He further urged, “We ask that Dr. Muhammadu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh issue an unqualified apology to the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu, the family of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, all former Presidents of Ghana, and the general public for the disrespect, impunity, and arrogance.”

Mahama is full of lies, be vigilant – Konadu Rawlings to Ghanaians

Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP), has dismissed President John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) claims of “unprecedented” infrastructural development as falsehoods.

In an interview with Class91.3FM’s Paa Kwesi Parker-Wilson, Mrs. Rawlings accused Mr. Mahama of attempting to deceive Ghanaians with exaggerated achievements.

“I don’t see what the president is talking about because he is lying to us and we won’t accept it,” Mrs Rawlings said.

She criticized the Mahama administration for what she viewed as misplaced priorities, citing an example where a school in Derma, designed to accommodate over 5,000 people, was commissioned despite the local population being fewer than 300 residents.

“I saw them [government] commissioning a school in Derma. … The population in Derma is not more than 300 people [but] the school that has been put there can house over 5,000 people. Is that what you want your monies to be used for?” she questioned.

Mrs. Agyeman-Rawlings expressed optimism about her party’s prospects in the upcoming December 7 elections, confident that the existing two-party dominance in Ghana could be overturned.

“You go to some countries, there are say two or three parties that have entrenched themselves, then suddenly one comes and sees everybody off and they become the government,” she stated.

Video: Nacee apologizes for not verifying Chef Smith’s GWR certification before sharing information

Gospel artist Nacee has publicly apologized to Ghanaians for inadvertently misleading his followers regarding Chef Smith’s supposed Guinness World Record (GWR) achievement. In a video posted on X by Eddiehub and reported by Ghanaweb, Nacee is seen kneeling in the studios of Peace FM, expressing his regret for endorsing Chef Smith’s claim without verifying its authenticity.

Nacee explained that he had used his platform to promote Chef Ebenezer Smith’s achievement, believing that the chef deserved more recognition and support during his cook-a-thon. However, Chef Smith later confessed to deceiving the public with a fake GWR certificate.

Chef Smith, who aimed to set a new cooking record similar to Nigeria’s Hilda Baci, embarked on a 35-day cooking marathon from February 1 to March 6, totaling 802 hours and 25 minutes. In early July, he prematurely declared himself the record-holder for the longest cooking marathon. His announcement was short-lived as he was subsequently arrested for alleged fraud.

In an emotional interview with Serwaa Amihere on GH One TV, Chef Smith expressed deep regret for his actions, apologizing to the public for his deceit. He admitted that his desperation to showcase his cooking talent led him to fabricate the certificate. “I render a very big apology on this big platform, and I apologise to the world that I am so sorry. I don’t deserve to live. But in my quest to earn a living, it has landed me this way I am sorry, and I beg the entire nation,” he stated.

Dr. Gideon Boako the spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has refuted claims that Ghanaians are leaving the country due to disillusionment with the current administration.

In an interview on Citi FM, Boako dismissed such allegations as “misleading” and lacking in honesty.

Responding to perceptions that emigration reflects dissatisfaction with the government, Dr. Boako argued that these views do not accurately represent the situation and undermine the government’s efforts.

He emphasized the importance of considering positive motives for travel, such as increased cross-border trade.

“It will be the highest level of dishonesty if anybody says that people are leaving due to hopelessness or hardship.

“People travel for different reasons. Some are going to school, some for business. Ten years ago, how many Ghanaians used to travel to Dubai?

“Today, multiples of people go to Dubai. What do they go there to do? They don’t go to live; they go for holidays, shopping, and trade and then come back,” citinewsroom.com quoted him to have said.

Dr. Boako emphasized the need to perceive the growing number of travelers in a positive light.

“You cannot say that seeing people at the airport is an indication of hopelessness. Today, cross-border trade is more prevalent than in the past,” he added.

“Claiming that more travel is a sign of hopelessness is not only dishonest but shows a lack of proper understanding.”

Soldiers, other security officers are not your enemies, stop fighting them – Kan-Dapaah to Ghanaians

National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah has issued a stern warning to Ghanaians about assaulting members of the country’s security forces.

During a meeting with traditional leaders in the Northern Region, Kan-Dapaah emphasized the immediate need to halt the practice of attacking uniformed personnel.

He stressed the importance of providing unwavering support to security personnel so they can effectively fulfill their duties.

Kan-Dapaah underscored the vital contributions of Ghana’s security forces and urged the public to acknowledge and respect their efforts.

He emphasized that despite any grievances, citizens should refrain from resorting to violence against police, soldiers, immigration officers, or intelligence personnel.

“This is the time Ghanaians must learn to appreciate and support the work of the security agencies, the soldiers, the police, the immigration officers, the prison officers, and all the institutions that are involved in providing security.

“They are the people who have made it possible for us to feel secure. Going forward, they are the people who provide the necessary services for us to feel secure.

“It shouldn’t happen that whatever the provocation, you should attack a police officer or a soldier or an immigration officer or an intelligence officer.”

Four Ghanaians fingered in Dubai money laundering scandal – Report

A report being attributed to the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and E24 have exposed numerous politically-exposed persons (PEPs), sanctioned individuals, and wanted criminals who own property in Dubai.

Dubai’s appeal lies in its financial secrecy, zero property rates, and political stability, making it a prime destination for those looking to stash illicit funds.

Dubai’s expansive high-end real estate market and minimal scrutiny of buyers have made it a haven for corrupt political leaders and criminals to invest.

Leaked property data from the UAE has revealed that dozens of convicted criminals, fugitives, and sanctioned individuals hold properties in Dubai.

Among these are alleged political figures and their associates, including those involved in major scandals, who have hidden their illicit gains in Dubai’s real estate market.

After months of thorough investigation, four politically-exposed Ghanaians have been identified as owning $8,409,400 worth of real estate in Dubai.

These individuals are Anthony Alfred Benin, Inusah Abdulai Bistav Fuseini, Joseph Kwaku Asamoah, and Moses Aduko Asaga.

Here’s a detailed look at these personalities and their Dubai properties:

    Anthony Alfred Benin

Benin is a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana and the ECOWAS Court of Justice.
Appointed by former president John Dramani Mahama in November 2012.
Owns two apartments in the First Central Hotel Apartments valued at $412,300.

    Inusah Fuseini

Former Minister for Land and Natural Resources and Minister for Roads under the Mahama administration.
Owns 20 apartments in Dubai, spread across several high-end properties, worth $7,240,400.

  • No time for comedy when Ghanaians are suffering – Mahama tells Bawumia

No time for comedy when Ghanaians are suffering – Mahama tells Bawumia

The National Democratic Congress’s 2024 Flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has strongly emphasized the gravity of the presidential role, insisting it should only be entrusted to capable leaders.

He pointed out the urgent challenges facing Ghana and emphasized that the upcoming election should not be trivialized with jokes or comedy.

Mahama criticized the use of trivial gestures, such as the symbolic handover of a mythical steer, in political campaigns. He argued that the presidency demands serious attention, especially given the current issues in Ghana.

Additionally, Mahama questioned Vice President Dr. Bawumia’s habit of taking credit for positive outcomes while shirking responsibility for governance failures.

He stressed that outdated slogans and deceptive practices have no place in Ghana’s current political environment, and such behavior will not be accepted by Ghanaian voters.

“Ghanaians are in dire straits and this is not the time for comedy. This is not for a concert party about passing the mythical steer to somebody. There is no space for stale falsehoods and gas lighting. It is unimaginable the narrative by some people that they have championed everything under this government, and at the same time are not responsible for anything under the same government because they were a self-styled driver’s mate.”

“It is simply not tenable and an insult to the intelligence of the electorates and the presidency cannot be presented to those who present themselves as the future when they have been at the epicentre of our disastrous present,”he stated.

Six Ghanaians die in Mecca due to severe heatwave during Hajj

Six Ghanaian nationals have tragically died in Mecca due to a severe heat wave sweeping through Saudi Arabia, raising the death toll among Ghanaian pilgrims to eight.

Spokesperson for the Hajj Board, Abdul Rahman Alhassan Gomba, confirmed the fatalities during an interview on Citi FM. The pilgrims, staying in Madina as part of their religious journey, faced extreme temperatures exceeding 41 degrees Celsius.

In response to the intense heat, Saudi authorities mandated that all pilgrims stay within their tents during peak heat hours, between noon and 4 p.m. local time.

Initially, reports of fatalities emerged involving Georgian pilgrims. However, it was later revealed that Ghanaians were also among the heat wave victims.

According to Sky News, over 1,000 people have now died during the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

“The temperature was so high—above 41 degrees Celsius,” Gomba stated.

“They asked the authorities to confine us to our camps between noon and 4 p.m. Saudi time. Later, we heard that some Georgians lost their lives in town.

“At the time, we didn’t even know that some Ghanaians were also going to lose their lives under the conditions said to be related to the heat waves that swept across Saudi Arabia on the day.”

Gomba mentioned that initial reports suggested 13 Ghanaian nationals had died, although this number was later clarified to six after fingerprint verification at the morgue.

These fatalities involved individuals suspected of traveling with non-Hajj visas, complicating identification efforts.

“The forensic centre at the morgue, where the corpses are kept before being buried, had only managed to get six nationals from Ghana.

“When I asked him how they were doing it, they told me they were using fingerprints, and it was a laborious task,” Gomba explained.

He concluded, “So, it will take days before the number of Ghanaians who died as a result of the heat wave will be established.

“Currently, we can say six people died during the heat wave, even though an autopsy report is not yet out regarding the subject.”

  • Ghanaians travelers to enjoy free Electronic Travel Authorisation when visiting Kenya

Ghanaians travelers to enjoy free Electronic Travel Authorisation when visiting Kenya

In a move to strengthen ties between Kenya and Ghana, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has announced that Ghanaian travelers will no longer need to pay fees for Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) when visiting Kenya.

This decision honors the visa-free agreement between the two nations.

An ETA, which is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport, is a crucial document for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling by air. It serves as a pre-screening tool for the destination country, ensuring increased security and streamlined entry upon arrival.

A travel advisory from the ministry, dated June 19, 2024, advises Ghanaians planning to visit Kenya to apply for their complimentary ETA through the official portal before departure to ensure a smooth and cost-free travel experience.

This gesture is expected to encourage more Ghanaians to explore Kenya, fostering greater cultural and economic exchanges between the countries.

  • Election is about competence, ideas, and not religion or ethnicity – Chairman of Christian Council

Election is about competence, ideas, and not religion or ethnicity – Chairman of Christian Council

The Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Reverend Dr. Hilliard Dela Dogbe, has emphasised that elections should be based on the competence and ideas of candidates, rather than their religion or ethnicity.

Speaking at the second biennial session of East, West and mid-Ghana conferences in session at Pentecost Convention Centre in Gomoa, Reverend Dogbe highlighted the importance of focusing on the qualifications and vision of those running for office.

He urged Ghanaians to look beyond superficial attributes and to evaluate candidates on their ability to deliver effective governance.

Reverend Dogbe pointed out that reducing elections to issues of religion or ethnicity undermines the democratic process and can lead to divisiveness.

He argued that such considerations distract from the critical issues that affect the daily lives of citizens, such as economic development, healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

By prioritizing competence and ideas, voters can ensure that the elected leaders are those best suited to address these pressing challenges.

The Christian Council Chairman also called on political parties to promote candidates who demonstrate a commitment to public service and possess a clear plan for the nation’s progress.

He noted that political parties have a responsibility to present the electorate with choices that reflect the highest standards of leadership.

Reverend Boafo encouraged parties to engage in policy-driven campaigns that foster informed decision-making among voters.

In addition to addressing the role of political parties, Reverend Boafo appealed to religious and community leaders to educate their followers on the importance of voting based on merit.

He emphasised that religious and ethnic affiliations should not influence electoral choices, and leaders should advocate for a focus on the capabilities and proposals of candidates. This, he said, would contribute to a more inclusive and effective political system.

“Bishop Chair, Your Excellency Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia, beloved here gathered, 2024 is a very significant year for us as a country: the Election of a new president of the Republic of Ghana. As we well know we have several candidates wanting to be President. I wish to admonish our political players and all of us to be wary of our language and uphold utmost tolerance in our engagements. Ghana is the only country that we have and it is imperative we do our best to protect its dignity and its peace.”

“Campaigns and engagements based on parochial interest, negative propaganda, and denigrating each other to win power are unhealthy. I further wish to admonish all of us the electorate to exercise decorum in our engagements. Our political party differences, ethnic differences and religious difference, should not divide us but rather reiterate our unity in diversity. Let us endeavour to be tolerant to the extent that ethnic, religious, and social identities should not be the basis of our decision-making or engagements.”

“Let us listen for ideas, reflect on the experience of the candidates, and prayerfully discern where to put your vote, and go out and vote,” he said.

Reverend Dogbe’s remarks come at a crucial time as Ghana prepares for its upcoming elections.

His call for an election centred on competence and ideas rather than religion or ethnicity resonates with many who seek a more mature and progressive political landscape.

No politician is worth the blood of any citizen – National Peace Council to Ghanaians

A member of the National Peace Council, Sheikh Aremeyaw Shaibu, has issued a heartfelt appeal to Ghanaians, urging them to prioritize unity and peace as the nation prepares for the crucial December polls.

He stressed the importance of placing national interests above individual or political affiliations.

He underscored the significance of fostering national cohesion beyond political divides and reiterated that no citizen’s life should ever be sacrificed for the sake of any politician.

“We need to sacrifice to help Ghana become better, we need peace, let’s portray the love and peace of God towards each other. Let’s not get divided due to political differences. Let’s make December polls successful. Let’s not engage in violence due to politics. We are all one people. No politician is worth the blood of any citizens,” he added.

Bawumia is being forced on Ghanaians to cover up Akufo-Addo’s tracks – Mahama

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has restated his plea for Ghanaians not to be swayed into keeping the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in power come December 7, 2024.

Mahama accused Akufo-Addo administration of orchestrating efforts to pave the way for his Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to assume presidency, aiming to shield themselves from the corruption allegations they face.

In a live broadcast on social media dubbed ‘Mahama Conversations’ on Sunday, June 9, 2024, Mahama urged voters to elect him, promising to hold current government officials accountable for their alleged wrongdoings.

He pledged to conduct thorough investigations into corruption allegations, not sparing officials from his own government if found guilty.

‘Mahama Conversations,’ urged Ghanaians to vote for him so that he would hold appointees of the current government accountable for all the wrongdoings they have committed.

“This change will also involve the most far-reaching and detailed investigation of the many allegations of corruption and scandals leveled against public officials and their families and friends.

“This change will help prevent this administration’s plan to force the compliant vice president on us to cover up for them and evade accountability,” he said.

Mahama stressed that his administration would implement stringent anti-corruption measures, ensuring transparency and accountability across the board, regardless of political affiliation.

“But, as I have stated, this intense spotlight of accountability is not only for appointees of this administration.

“It will also be used to punish individuals in my own administration who engage in similar misconduct. The same anti-corruption measures and tools I will use to investigate and punish NPP government appointees will also apply to my own appointees. In essence, in Ghanaian terms, ‘the stick that is used on Techie will also be used on Barh’,” he noted.

Vote for me to revive banks that were collapsed unfairly – Mahama to Ghanaians

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has reiterated his commitment to restoring collapsed banks and financial institutions after conducting a thorough and impartial assessment.

Expressing concern about Ghana’s rising unemployment, he called on Ghanaians to overwhelmingly support him in the 2024 elections to rejuvenate the struggling economy.

During an interaction with Ghanaians on Sunday, June 9, Mahama acknowledged the growing discontent among the youth and assured them of his dedication to building a nation of shared growth and prosperity.

“My dear youth, while I agree with your justifiable anger and disappointments, I urge you to keep hope alive. Have faith in God and the power of your thumb. Ghanaians are in search of hope, hope they can believe in! Hope with the assurance that Ghana will be reset onto the path of progress and prosperity.

“Hope, knowing they can live in safe neighbourhoods and earn a living if they study hard, work hard, and live as law-abiding citizens. This is what Ghanaians are yearning for, and this is precisely what the NDC and I are presenting to you in this election of 2024.

“Exercise your franchise by voting for me, John Mahama, on 7th December 07 and for the NDC Parliamentary Candidate in your constituency. As your selfless, truthful, experienced, and visionary leader, I need your vote to reset Ghana. I assure you I will work with you to build a country of shared growth and prosperity.”

He stressed, “By resetting Ghana, I will repair the dangerous damage to our country’s economy and people.
Businessmen and women who government apparatchiks have given raw deals will have their say and can be assured of restoration. After a thorough and unbiased assessment, collapsed banks and financial institutions shall be restored. We will provide decent and well-paying jobs through my 24-hour economy initiative.

“Let me be clear: I am utterly appalled and disappointed by the unprecedented unemployment rate we are seeing today.”

Former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta oversaw the banking sector clean-up from mid-2017 to January 2020, resulting in the closure of several banks, microfinance institutions, savings and loans, and finance houses.

  • Democracy is not allowing Ghanaians to think for themselves – Akosua Bame

Democracy is not allowing Ghanaians to think for themselves – Akosua Bame

Ghanaian author, Akosua Bame has issued a thought-provoking critique of Ghana’s democratic system, suggesting that citizens have been misled about the true nature of their political freedom.

She said this while speaking at a public lecture held on Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the British Council on the theme “Looking Beyond the Fourth Republic Towards Nation-Building,” the author of “The Mindset Revolution”

“For decades, Ghanaians have been programmed not to think for themselves; They have been deceived with the ideology of democracy perceiving that because they can insult a leader on a radio or televised programme they are truly enjoying the benefit of democracy,” she stated.

Madam Bame argued that this perceived freedom to criticize leaders on public platforms gives a false sense of democratic participation.

She believes that such actions are often seen as the hallmark of democracy, yet they do not translate into meaningful political change or accountability.

The author highlighted that even empowering declarations, like “be citizens and not spectators,” quickly lose their impact once those in power achieve their goals.

According to her, these slogans are designed to placate the public and fade away as soon as political objectives are met.

“They are truly enjoying the benefits of democracy even when declarations such as be citizens and not spectators are made; they fizzle out immediately that the power is attained. What has been the response when issues have emerged with the current government?

She questioned  the current government’s response to public dissent, particularly when significant issues arise.

She referenced the widespread calls for the resignation of the then-Minister of Finance, a demand that was largely ignored.

Instead of being removed, the minister was “rewarded with another portfolio” on January 10, 2023.

Following the resignation of Alan Kyerematen, the Finance Minister was appointed as the caretaker minister of the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

When Ghanaians asked the then honorable minister of Finance to resign or be sacked by the president he was recently rewarded with another portfolio on 10th January 2023 as caretaker minister of the Ministry of Trade and Industry following the resignation of Alan Kyerematen”.

She emphasized the need for genuine democratic engagement where public opinion leads to substantial action and accountability from leaders.

Pepper prices have surged by over 200% in less than a year, with a paint container size now costing GH¢180 compared to an average of GH¢65 previously.

The supply shortage is a major factor driving these price hikes, leading to pepper sacks being priced above GH¢3,000, according to JoyNews’ market research data.

We admit we have failed Ghanaians in some way, but we will do better – Government spokesperson

Government Spokesperson, Kofi Tonto, has admitted that the Akufo-Addo-led administration has failed in meeting the needs and expectations of Ghanaians.

According to him, although the current government acknowledges its shortcomings, it is working tirelessly to do better in the future.

Making an appearance on Peace FM’s Kokrooko Show he touted some of government’s achievements, emphasising that while it has played a role in national development, its contributions have been partial rather than complete.

He noted that out of 94,000km road infrastructure, the government has repaired 12,000km of road networks. This he said can be better.

He added that politicians should embrace accountability by acknowledging their mistakes, addressing the challenges they face, and actively seek solutions.

“Politicians must embrace accountability by admitting their mistakes, tackling the challenges they encounter, and actively pursuing solutions. We acknowledge the economic instability and the progress in repairing 12,000km out of 94,000km of road networks.

“Nevertheless, there is still much to be done, and we have the capability to accomplish more. We also recognize our shortcomings in nationwide hospital construction. While the government has contributed to national development, we acknowledge that our efforts have been only partially fulfilled,” he added.

Strengthen healthcare access by serving in rural areas – Health Minister to newly trained pharmacists

Newly qualified pharmacists are being encouraged to embrace postings in rural and underserved areas, alongside integrating digital technology to enhance access to quality pharmaceutical care.

This advice was imparted by the Minister of Health, Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, during a speech delivered by Deputy Minister Alexander Akwasi Acquah at the induction ceremony for 364 recently qualified and registered pharmacists in Accra.

The minister highlighted the significance of this approach in bolstering the healthcare system and ensuring accessibility for all Ghanaians.

The event, organized by the Pharmacy Council, saw participants from various institutions including Kwame Nkrumah University of Technology (KNUST), University of Ghana, Central University College, and University of Health and Allied Sciences, among others.

Under the theme ‘Universal Health Coverage: Embracing the Digital Frontiers to Leverage Access to Quality Healthcare,’ the ceremony underscored the pivotal role of technology in healthcare advancement.

Dr. Okoe-Boye addressed the common inclination among professionals to seek opportunities abroad, stressing the importance of retaining talent within Ghana, especially in underserved regions.

He emphasized that while digital technology enhances their services, it should complement rather than replace professional care.

“Dear inductees, the future is bright if you maintain focus and resist the temptation to overindulge in the social aspects of digitalization at the expense of your patients and profession. Embrace the positives and mitigate the negatives of digital technology in the performance of your professional duties to ensure the nation benefits maximally from your services,” the minister added.

Assuring the pharmacists of ministry support, Dr. Okoe-Boye urged them to uphold high standards of care and continually develop their skills to enhance operational efficiency.

Mr. Thomas Boateng Appiagyei, former President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, emphasized the need for innovative thinking in embracing digital solutions. He urged pharmacists to employ critical and creative approaches to address challenges in their practice.

Dr. Daniel Amaning Danquah, Acting Registrar of the Pharmacy Council, congratulated the pharmacists and reminded them to uphold the Apothecary’s Oath, ensuring professionalism, ethics, and patient-centered care.

The induction ceremony also recognized outstanding contributions, with Dr. Kate Coleman-Sarfo honored as the Preceptor of the Year, Dr. Nana Yaw Wireko-Ampong receiving the Law, Ethics, and Policies Award, and Dr. Michael Opoku Fordjour earning the Pharmacy Practice Award and the prestigious John Ocran Award for overall excellence.

Dont blame Ghanaian citizens for valuing dual citizenship over education, blame society – Saddick Adams

Renowned sports journalist from Ghana Saddick Adams has urged fellow Ghanaians to remain calm regarding a fellow citizen who recently obtained Dutch citizenship.

This individual, who had been living in the Netherlands for years and recently acquired Dutch citizenship, made a statement equating the value of a Dutch passport to that of a PhD.

While this remark sparked criticism from some Ghanaians, Adams believes that their outrage is unwarranted.

Adams acknowledges that he personally prioritizes education but notes that many Ghanaians place a higher value on dual citizenship.

He points out that even prominent leaders in Ghana often prioritize acquiring citizenship abroad, as evidenced by instances of legislators taking extended breaks to give birth in Western countries for the sake of obtaining passports.

While Adams acknowledges that valuing a passport over academic achievements might seem disrespectful to those with PhDs or pursuing them, he emphasizes that this sentiment reflects a prevailing mindset in Ghana.

He suggests that instead of condemning individuals for such views, it’s important to recognize the broader societal context that influences these perspectives.

  • I will go back to fraud, ‘sakawa’ if you don’t support my music career – US Deportee Showboy tells Ghanaians

I will go back to fraud, ‘sakawa’ if you don’t support my music career – US Deportee Showboy tells Ghanaians

Popular Ghanaian musician and socialite, Sam Safo popularly known as Showboy, has vowed to revisit certain bad habits of the past if  he doesn’t receive the necessary attention and support from Ghanaians to succeed in the music industry.

In an interview with Adom FM, he indicated that before embarking on his music journey he resorted to money rituals, fraudulent activities and other negative vices in order to make ends meet.

However, he mentioned that finding a talent in music gave him hope, thus, created an avenue for him to escape from these bad habits.

According to him, he was stuck in them due to the  limited job opportunities in the country, as such, his music career is the best chance for a positive future.

He added that Ghanaians’ encouragement and backing will go a long way in determining the execution of his plan B.

“I urge all Ghanaians to support my music journey because without it, I may be tempted to resort to fraudulent activities, money rituals, and other negative habits from my past. I’ve struggled with these vices before, and I don’t want to return to that dark path. With limited job opportunities in the country, my music career is my best chance for a positive future. Your support will determine whether I stay on this path or risk falling back into a life of crime, including armed robbery. Your encouragement and backing mean everything to me,” he added.

Showboy was sentenced to six years in prison in March 2019 for stabbing a US-based Ghanaian musician during a tussle.

Although the musician, Junior, survived the stabbing, he was later killed in a robbery attack in 2021. At the time of Junior’s death, many accused Showboy’s associates of being involved in the crime.

However, Showboy has since been released from prison. In a recent video shared on social media, he was seen on the shores of Ghana. Announcing his return on Instagram, the former AMG group co-founder posted a video of himself at the beach, performing a ritual cleanse.

“I am back to pay homage to all the gods and my ancestors. I am back,” he said.

In the caption accompanying his post, Showboy, who disclosed that his mental health has been affected by the entire ordeal, thanked everyone who stood by him.

“Thanks to Allah/God and our ancestors for everything!!! Shouts to all my dawgs /Families that held me down and never turned their back on me…shouts to all that tolerated my depression and sorry to all I offended !!! back for everything !! FINALLY FREE !!!” he retorted.

  • Govt draining pockets of ordinary Ghanaians in the name National Cathedral – Ansa-Asare

Govt draining pockets of ordinary Ghanaians in the name National Cathedral – Ansa-Asare

The Akufo-Addo administration is squeezing the last drop from every Ghanaian to fund the President’s National Cathedral dream, according to former Ghana School of Law Director Kwaku Ansa-Asare.

Mr. Ansa-Asare described the Akufo-Addo government as the most corrupt in Ghana’s history, highlighting the substantial amount of taxpayers’ money invested in the President’s personal pledge to build a national cathedral.

“We want to build the Cathedral, so, we take the monies. They used the Cathedral to milk us. the government is milking the ordinary Ghanaian,” he complained.

In January 2023, Dr. Paul Opoku Mensah, the Executive Director of the National Cathedral Secretariat, denied that any government-allocated funds for the cathedral project had gone missing.

At the project site, he informed President Nana Akufo-Addo and the media on Tuesday, January 2, 2023, that:

“For purposes of clarity, I want to report a verbatim memo I sent on this issue dated 19th January 2022 and addressed to the Clerk of Parliament.”

“The indication was that the government has given us GHS339 million and we could account for GHS225 million leaving GHS114 million missing.”

”Here, I quote what I wrote to the Clerk. ‘As we indicated to the Committee on Thursday, December 15, 2022, the total amount paid by the government of Ghana to the National Cathedral project is GHS339 million. This total is made up of the following: the amount paid directly to the National Cathedral Secretariat is GHS225 million. The amount paid directly to the Consultant, Adjaye Associates & Design Team is GHS113.040.54.67 million. The two payments total GHS339.003.064.86’.”

Dr Opoku Mensah, thus, dispelled claims that some monies allocated for the construction of the cathedral cannot be accounted for.

“So, there are no missing funds that could not be accounted for. Secondly, the detailed account for these funds was provided to Parliament on December 15, 2022, by the Secretariat. In the case of the accounting from the Secretariat, this involves among others, total payments made to the contractor, and total payments made to the Bible Museum and Biblical Gardens Design Team.”

He also conveyed the secretariat’s dissatisfaction with certain Members of Parliament for, in his words, misrepresenting the project’s realities.

“While projects of this nature will always have discontent, we are nonetheless concerned about the misrepresentations particularly when it comes from Members of Parliament.”

“For instance, the continued misrepresentation of the contract to the consultants is worrying as none of the amount bandied around comes anywhere near the contract amount.”

“Rather than 34% that they said we’d paid the architect, actually, the contract figure is 12.5% when the Ministry of Works and Housing allows for 15.5%. And the 12.5% will not change irrespective of what happens to the total cost.”

“More critically, the contract is not for an architect, but for a set of consultants’ services involving 15 international and Ghanaian firms of which Sir David Adjaye Associates is the lead consultant,” he said.

He also expressed the secretariat’s displeasure over what he described as a misrepresentation of facts on the project by some Members of Parliament.

“More critically, the contract is not for an architect, but for a set of consultants’ services involving 15 international and Ghanaian firms of which Sir David Adjaye Associates is the lead consultant,” he said.

In the 2023 budget, government allocated a sum of GHS80million towards the construction of the cathedral, however, the Minority succeeded in disapproving it.

In the view of Mr Ansa-Asare, scandals like the cathedral saga, are a testament to how endemic corruption has been in the Akufo-Addo government.

“I don’t have the statistics but watching the political terrain, and the various approaches to the fight against corruption, I would say that this is the worst government we have ever had to combat corruption,” he told Accra-based Citi FM in an interview.

“I don’t have the statistics but watching the political terrain, and the various approaches to the fight against corruption, I would say that this is the worst government we have ever had to combat corruption,” he told Accra-based Citi FM in an interview.

He continued: “I have said it before. I granted an interview and I said: ‘Any government that will come and shout from the rooftop, ‘I’m going to fight corruption’, will be the worst in terms of fighting corruption. That will be the most corrupt government.’”

“Akufo-Addo’s government is the worst ever, the most corrupt government we have ever had,” Mr Ansa-Asare asserted.

Comparing this government to others in the Fourth Republic, Mr Ansa-Asare scored it ‘F’ as far as corruption fight is concerned.

“At least, I have witnessed Rawlings, Kufuor, Mills and Mahama. If I have to score them and award them marks, the last and worst will be the current government, followed by John Mahama’s government. Mills will be first, Kufuor second, Rawlings third, Akufo-Addo last, in terms of grade one to four.”

“We’re all witnesses to scandal after scandal. The latest is the [Pwalugu] dam. We don’t even know where the dam is. We don’t know what has happened, but there’s a dam.” “One-District-One-Factory: the monies.”

  • Claim that OSP saved millions of Ghana Cedis from payroll audits is false – Martin Amidu

Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has criticized his successor, Kissi Agyebeng, for misleading Ghanaians by claiming to save millions of Ghana Cedis from payroll audits.

Mr Amidu finds the report released by the Office of the Special Prosecutor on the payroll audit nauseating.

“It is extremely worrisome that a non-existent entity had been designated as a functioning District Assembly Primary School and the data of the artificially created staff had found its way into the government payroll system for regular payments,” the report said.

“Further, some headteachers and heads of units were validating some persons whose whereabouts were unknown to them. Egregiously, some validators were validating persons who were, to the knowledge of the validators, deceased, retired or vacated their posts.

“Out of the sampled high-risk number of 1,265 persons represented on the payroll, the joint investigation and assessment cleared 1,020 persons as regularly validated. The Special Prosecutor promptly unfroze the blocked salaries of the verified regularly validated persons upon the timeous clearance by the joint team, and these persons have been restored on the payroll system. A total amount of Two Million Eight Hundred and Fifty-Four Thousand One Hundred and Forty-Four cedis Eighty pesewas (GHC2,854,144.80) was traced as representing unearned monthly salaries being paid to persons who are deceased, retired, vacated their posts, flagged as missing staff, or whose whereabouts are unknown (colloquially referred to as “Ghost Names”) from their respective effective dates to January 2024, when it was blocked by the Special Prosecutor.

“The blockade of the amount of Two Million Eight Hundred and Fifty-Four Thousand One Hundred and Forty-Four cedis Eighty pesewas (GHC2,854,144.80) and the removal from Government Payroll of the corresponding deceased, retired, post vacators, the missing, and those whose whereabouts are unknown has saved the Republic an amount of Thirty-Four
Million Two Hundred and Forty-Nine Thousand Seven Hundred and ThirtySeven cedis Six pesewas (GHC34,249,737.6) for the 2024 financial year, and future savings of that amount (in addition to future periodic upward pay adjustments) for every year that the unearned-salaries-amount would have remained undetected but for the joint investigation and assessment by the OSP and CAGD of Government Payroll in the Northern Region (covering
educational institutions under Ghana Education Service and Tamale Teaching Hospital).”

He refrained from disclosing the financial investment in his campaign, including the cost of his widespread billboards.

“I don’t need to tell Ghanaians that this is how much I have invested in my campaign. The people of Ghana don’t go around disclosing the funds of what they do,” he retorted.

Ghanaians aren’t gentle, don’t think you can misbehave and have your way – Duncan-Williams warns politicians

The founder of Action Chapel International, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, has issued a stern warning to politicians, urging them to act in the best interest of the citizens to prevent potential unrest caused by continued exploitation.

Speaking on the current hardships in the country, including the mass exodus of healthcare professionals, he emphasized the need for transparency and fairness in alleviating the suffering of ordinary Ghanaians.

He cautioned that failure to address these issues could lead to a crisis driven by the unintended consequences of widespread hardship.

Drawing on historical events, Duncan-Williams reminded the current leadership that Ghanaians have previously risen against oppression, referencing the coups of 1979 and 1981.

“May I say this that nobody should think that the Ghanaian is very gentle and doesn’t like trouble. It’s not true, because I saw what happened in 79 and 81 (during the Rawlings coups).

“There were Ghanaians and some of the violence and murders and unrest in a certain part of this country like what’s going on in Bawku and other places, they are all Ghanaians, and if we don’t manage things well and we have this mentality and thinking that any party can do whatever they want to do and the Ghanaian will accept it, and the Ghanaian will live for it, you might be playing with fire, make no mistake,” he cautioned.

He warned against underestimating the potential for unrest, mentioning ongoing conflicts in regions like Bawku as examples of the volatility that can arise.

The Archbishop made these remarks during a meeting with the leadership of Christian Ecumenical Councils and former President John Dramani Mahama in Accra on Monday, May 20, 2024.

He highlighted the dangers of ignoring the frustrations of the populace, noting that desperate and angry people are difficult to manage and can become a breeding ground for further chaos.

Prominent clergymen, including Rev. Stephen Wengam, Rev. Lawrence Tetteh, and Rev. Sam Korankye Ankrah, were also present at the meeting, along with the NDC’s National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey.

Irish-Ghanaian catholic missionary renowned for founding the Lepers Aid Committee and serving as parish priest at Christ the King Catholic Church in Accra, Rev. Fr. Andrew Campbell recently opened up about his past cinema visits, shedding light on a time when cinemas were a popular pastime in Ghana.

During a conversation, Father Campbell reminisced about the era when frequenting the cinema was a common practice among Ghanaians, citing iconic venues like the Roxy cinema among others that were popular in their day.

However, the priest also shared an unexpected experience from his cinema-going days.

He recalled visiting a cinema in the Nima area and being taken aback when he discovered that the screening was of a blue film, featuring x-rated content.

In line with his faith and beliefs, Father Campbell swiftly made the decision to leave the cinema, stating, “I quickly left the cinema when I saw the Blue film about to show. This cinema was located in Nima back then. I couldn’t stand there and watch. So I quickly left.”

This revelation adds a personal touch to Father Campbell’s public image, showcasing both his familiarity with popular culture and his steadfast commitment to his religious principles.

NPP man reportedly assaulted with machete at Cape Coast during voter registration exercise

During the ongoing limited voter registration drive in Cape Coast North, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justice Agyemang, has been viciously assaulted, sustaining head injuries from a machete attack.

According to a report on onuaonline.com, the assault on Agyemang was allegedly perpetrated by Eric Sampson, also known as Bullet, purportedly the bodyguard of Samuel Kwamena Mintah, the Member of Parliament for Cape Coast North.

The chaos erupted at the registration center when individuals seeking to register were reportedly hindered, with suspicions that they were brought from other areas to the venue.

This led to a confrontation between the MP’s team and members of the NPP.

Reports suggest that at one point, the machete used to injure the NPP official was in the possession of the MP’s bodyguard.

Following the violent incident, bystanders rushed the victim to a nearby hospital for medical attention.

The Electoral Commission’s limited registration initiative, which commenced on May 7, aims to register eligible Ghanaians who have reached the age of 18. The registration process is scheduled to conclude on May 27.

Ghanaians do not have amnesia; we still remember how you poorly performed as president – Mike Oquaye Jnr to Mahama

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Dome-Kwabenya, Mike Oquaye Jnr., has warned that Ghanaians could rue their decision if they elect John Dramani Mahama as president once more.

According to him, Mahama lacks innovative ideas for Ghana’s progress.

During an interview on NEAT FM’s ‘Ghana Montie’ morning show, Oquaye Jnr. emphasized Mahama’s previous dismissal of Ghanaians as having short memories.

He urged voters to recall why they rejected Mahama before.

Oquaye Jnr. also criticized Mahama’s campaign promises, questioning their substance.

He particularly questioned Mahama’s commitment to the national football team, citing his past tenure’s purported neglect of the Black Stars.

“Ghanaians must remember the kind of person he [Mahama] is and why we voted against him,” he said.

Mike Oquaye Jnr. further questioned “what Mahama is coming back to do” with his chain of promises to lure voters.

“It’s surprising for Mahama to say he will revamp the Black Stars if he returns to power. What did he do for the Black Stars when he was in power?” he questioned.”

Member of the Council of State, Mr. Sam Okudzeto, has criticized some Ghanaians for being dishonest in their criticisms of former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, who faced investigation for large sums of money found in her home.

Mr. Sam Okudzeto questioned why other individuals with extravagant properties in the country were not being scrutinized for the sources of their wealth, unlike Cecilia Dapaah.

In an interview with TV3’s Beatrice Adu, Mr. Sam Okudzeto, also a private legal practitioner, stated that Ghanaians were being dishonest in singling out Cecilia Dapaah for criticism without evidence of wrongdoing.

He emphasized that Ghanaian laws do not convict people based on circumstantial evidence and require proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

Mr. Okudzeto further highlighted the limitations of state institutions involved in Cecilia Abena Dapaah’s case, including the Attorney-General’s Department, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

He criticized some lawyers for making commentaries on the case without proper understanding, emphasizing the complexity of legal matters and the need for thorough research and discussion within the legal profession.

“If you come and you find money with me, do I owe you any duty to explain to you to whose money when nobody has complained that I have stolen his money?

“You Ghanaians are not honest people, the number of people, all these huge buildings that they are building, who has asked them where they got the money from, nobody does. So you just pick on one individual and you want to make it as if she was just an extraordinary rogue who has stolen money when you don’t even have any evidence that she has stolen money.”

“Do the laws convict people on circumstantial evidence? when you go to the criminal court you must establish the issues beyond all reasonable doubt, that is what the criminal law says . The criminal law is not based upon suspicion or mere allegation.”
