The Communications Director of the Bawumia Campaign Team, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, has called on Ghanaians to rally behind Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in his bid for the presidency in the 2024 elections.

She encouraged self-reliance and urged against insulting others for expressing differing views.

‘Dumsor’ is now in the past – Akufo-Addo says in May Day speech

President Akufo-Addo has reassured Ghanaians that the recent episodes of erratic power supply, commonly referred to as ‘dumsor’, will soon be a thing of the past.

The president elaborated that the recent power outages have been addressed following the completion of maintenance work on transformers by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

“Issues surrounding the maintenance of the transformers have been resolved. Indeed, we have witnessed stable power supply across the country with no load shedding reported anywhere yesterday…I am confident that the unfortunate era of dumsor will not return,” President Akufo-Addo said while delivering his speech at the Workers’ Day observation.

His comments on dumsor come amidst public appeals for the government to either rectify the power irregularities or provide an electricity supply schedule.

One notable advocate is Dr. Yaw Baah, the Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), who urged the president to promptly tackle the intermittent power situation.

Dr. Baah expressed his concerns, stating that it is unfortunate and unjust for Ghanaians to endure dumsor under the previous administration and again under the current one.

“It is regrettable that people are facing dumsor once more; please take action on dumsor now,” Dr. Baah emphasized in his May Day message to the government.

Govt’s dependence on IMF, World Bank reveals lack of policy decisiveness – Analyst

An economy and policy analyst, Enoch Okomfo Okonah, has expressed concern over Ghana’s heavy reliance on Bretton Woods institutions for managing the Ghana Cedi, citing a lack of clear policy direction to address the nation’s economic challenges.

Speaking with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani regarding the state of the economy, Okonah advocates for more assertive economic policies to bolster the Ghana Cedi, rather than depending excessively on foreign aid and borrowing.

As the Chief Executive Officer of DUMAT Africa, a Sunyani-based economic policy think-tank, Mr Okonah underscores the need for targeted tax reforms aimed at boosting domestic production and reducing imports.

He suggested that the government should prioritize subsidizing imports and foster a resilient local economy that favors private sector growth to tackle fiscal challenges effectively.

This approach, he believes, would stabilize the economy, drive rapid economic expansion, and ultimately fortify the Ghana Cedi to facilitate wealth creation and poverty alleviation.

Highlighting the importance of a robust local economy in inspiring investor confidence, Mr Okonah stressed the significance of attracting investments across various sectors.

With the IMF deal finalized, Mr Okonah urged for sound economic policies to address the soaring market prices of food, commodities, building materials, petroleum products, and essential services.

He emphasized the need for policies that aim to build a better society and improve the quality of life for all Ghanaians.

  • Ghanaians love political parties more than the country’s welfare- Kofi Kinaata

Ghanaians love political parties more than the country’s welfare- Kofi Kinaata

Acclaimed music star known for hits like “Confessions,”  Kofi Kinaata recently spoke out about Ghana’s deepening political divisions.

In a candid interview, he highlighted how Ghanaians‘ unwavering loyalty to political parties is harming the nation’s progress.

Kinaata lamented the pervasive mindset where citizens prioritise their allegiance to parties over the country’s well-being.

He expressed frustration, noting that this mindset stifles discussions on critical issues, as people fear backlash and political labelling.

“In our country, politicians have made promises, but we see little change. Personally, I’ve lost hope,” Kinaata remarked in an interview with Graphic Online.

He elaborated on the challenges posed by intense partisan loyalties, stating, “People’s strong affiliations to parties hinder meaningful conversations.

Criticise party A, and their supporters attack you. Speak against party B, and you face similar backlash. It’s a chaotic situation.”

“Over the years, we have been sweet-talked to by politicians in this country, but nothing happens, and there is no change. For me, I’ve given up,” Graphic Online quoted him as saying.

“The people are making things difficult, so we cannot address issues because someone thinks he is for party A, so whatever you’re saying goes against party A, so don’t say. He is for party B, so he will still stand for his party even if he’s dying. People tend to love their party more than the country, so everything is in a mess.”

Kinaata’s comments shed light on the concerning trend where political allegiance eclipses national interests, impeding constructive dialogue and problem-solving.

Despite receiving invitations to join politics, including offers from the Movement for Change, Kofi Kinaata clarified that he has no plans to enter the political arena.

It is your job to provide us electricity, not a favour – PPP

Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has criticized the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for its failure to provide Ghanaians with a load-shedding timetable amidst ongoing power cuts, locally known as “dumsor”.

During a discussion on Peace FM’s “Kokrokoo” morning show, Nana Owusu expressed deep concern over the detrimental impact of erratic electricity supply on businesses and communities across the nation.

He condemned the lack of transparency and accountability from the ECG, emphasizing the urgent need for clear communication and direction from the authorities.

According to him, the Ministry of Energy and the electricity suppliers, particularly ECG, are solely responsible for the plight of Ghanaians as a result of the power cuts.

Nana Owusu highlighted the absence of a comprehensive power schedule, leaving citizens in the dark and unable to plan their activities effectively.

He further stressed the importance of providing guidance to help Ghanaians mitigate the adverse effects of power disruptions on their livelihoods.

“We need direction. Leaders must come and tell us directions. You are there; you are accountable to the people. You have collected our money.

“We pay taxes. You owe us to make sure we have lights. You are not doing us any favour…This thing is becoming unbecoming!” Owusu exclaimed, expressing the frustration and dissatisfaction of Ghanaians.

My goal is to ensure that we live in a bilingual Ghana – Akufo-Addo tells Ghanaians

President Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transforming Ghana into a bilingual nation by integrating the French language into its linguistic fabric.

He emphasized that several initiatives are underway to achieve this goal, including the introduction of bilingual education in select subjects at the elementary level.

President Akufo-Addo made these remarks during the 60th anniversary celebration of Lycée Français International Jacques Prévert d’Accra on Friday.

Catherine Dauer, the Principal of Lycée Français International Jacques Prévert d’Accra, commended the school’s academic accomplishments and highlighted the partnerships it is forging with other institutions.

“The goal of government is to ensure that we live in a bilingual Ghana where both French and English are spoken together with our indigenous languages. We’ve already begun to work towards this,” he stated.

“I am very proud to be the principal of Jacques school. It is something beautiful because we have a lot of students here, around 700 and each student that is coming from Ghana or all around the world are part of a very big network like the AFC which is the French Agency for French Language in foreign countries.”

“So indeed, in the world, we have around 555 schools and there is a link between each school. And as a French school, we also develop a lot of partnerships with Ghanaian schools or American schools,” she stated.

No bribery! No corruption! I have been a clean politician – Alan Kyerematen

The Leader of the Alliance for Revolutionary Change (ARC), Alan Kyerematen, has firmly asserted his commitment to integrity, stating that he has never participated in corrupt activities throughout his political career.

Addressing the issue, he emphasized that corruption is something he vehemently opposes and ensures it does not occur under his leadership.

“If I say I’ve never been corrupt and I’ll never be corrupt, I’m not corrupt now, in all, it’s to say the matter speaks for itself. I’ve never taken a bribe, it will not even happen. How is it going to happen? In fact, I don’t want us to use all our time.

“I don’t want us to use all our time to talk about this but if a politician in Africa is able to say categorically with the full force of the energy that he has to say that I’ve never been corrupt, I’ll never be corrupt, what further testimony do you require?” he stated.

Meanwhile, the Movement for Change (M4C), founded by Kyerematen, recently forged a significant partnership with the National Interest Movement (NIM), a political civil society coalition led by Dr. Michael Abu Sakara Foster, former flagbearer of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), among others.

This collaboration, known as the ‘Alliance for Revolutionary Change’ (ARC), aims to actively engage Ghanaians nationwide, particularly focusing on mobilizing youth and women from various religious, political, and ethnic backgrounds.

The ultimate aim of the ARC is to establish a strong coalition to elect the first independent candidate as President of the Republic of Ghana.

  • Thank you for your patience – Akufo-Addo commends Ghanaians amid dumsor

Thank you for your patience – Akufo-Addo commends Ghanaians amid dumsor

President Akufo-Addo has publicly acknowledged the recent challenges in power supply, reassuring the nation of the government’s firm commitment to resolving these issues.

He expressed gratitude for the patience shown by Ghanaians during the recent power outages and reiterated ongoing efforts to address the challenges.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Kumasi 1 Thermal Plant in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, April 17, President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the difficulties faced not only by the people of Ashanti but also by citizens across the nation.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Parliament’s Mines and Energy Committee, Samuel Atta Akyea, has cautioned against politicizing electricity issues and emphasized the universal need for reliable power supply regardless of political affiliations.

“It is useless when propaganda is what people want to embark upon. I thought when it comes to electricity or power generation, I said and I will repeat it, it doesn’t have party colours. Everybody in Ghana needs electricity. And therefore when there is an undertaking to build on the power base of this nation and people want to pooh-pooh it, it doesn’t accord with common sense. What kind of government do you want to come and inherit? A government that will not have the use of electricity?

“I don’t know our sense of governance. Our sense of governance is that Ghana should be the ultimate beneficiary. If it is NPP, fine. If it is NDC, that is what it should be. But when it is not coming from your government and you want to undermine it, it leaves much to be desired.”

Flagbearer for the Nation Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama has made a commitment to prioritizing the completion of abandoned projects should he secure victory in the upcoming December polls.

He has also vowed to address security concerns in the six recently established regions by establishing military barracks in each region if he wins the 2024 elections.

The regions in question are Savannah, North East, Bono East, Ahafo, Western North, and Oti.

During his speech in Gambaga, located in the North East Region, as part of his Building the Ghana We Want Tour, Mahama emphasized the pressing need for improved security in these new regions.

He underscored the importance of taking proactive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and outlined plans to bolster security infrastructure and respond swiftly to emerging threats by setting up military barracks in each region.

“We are going to prioritise the completion of abandoned projects. All six new regions are going to have military barracks so that the Ghana Army will be present in all the regions. In addition, we are going to form joint military and police anti-armed robbery squads and one of those squads will be here in the North East to fight armed robbery.”

“Because we want you to have peace and security to be able to go about your duties and we know that our 24-hour economy policy cannot work unless there is security and safety for everybody,” he explained.

  • We will strictly enforce tax on foreign incomes earned by Ghanaians – GRA

We will strictly enforce tax on foreign incomes earned by Ghanaians – GRA

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), under Commissioner-General Julie Essiam’s leadership, has introduced a new compliance measure targeting the foreign income of resident Ghanaians.

This initiative aims to substitute the suspended Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity and is designed to generate sustainable revenue beyond 2024.

According to Madam Essiam, while this measure is not novel and has been part of the law for some time, its implementation has not been effectively executed.

“We [GRA] will specifically speak to the measure that is replacing the VAT on electricity. So, the measure that we put in place is a compliance measure on foreign income of resident Ghanaians.

“This measure is already in the law, as the minister said, so it is not a new measure. The difference is that its implementation and application have not been implemented effectively,” the GRA Commissioner-General said in her brief remarks at the joint IMF, BoG and Ministry of Finance presser held in Accra on April 13, 2024.

Essiam added that “The GRA, with support from the Organization for African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACD), has refined the processes and structures to ensure effective implementation.

“So for us to implement this measure, we have, with the aid and assistance of the OACD, gone through sustainable processes and structures to ensure that when we implement this measure, the sustainability of this measure is going to go beyond 2024 in our revenue numbers.

“So this is the measure that, together with the Government of Ghana and our mother ministry, the Ministry of Finance, is going to take place or is going to replace the VAT on electricity.”

Speaking at a joint IMF, BoG, and Ministry of Finance press conference in Accra on April 13, 2024, the GRA Commissioner-General highlighted the refinement of processes and structures with support from the Organization for African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACD) to ensure effective implementation.

She emphasized that this measure, alongside the Government of Ghana and the Ministry of Finance, will replace the VAT on electricity.

Madam Essiam expressed confidence in the sustainability of this measure, stating that it will extend beyond 2024 in revenue generation.

This move is part of Ghana’s government efforts, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, to address the country’s fiscal needs, particularly in revenue mobilization.

Essiam affirmed her confidence that this measure will not only be sustainable but also effectively replace the projected GH¢1.8 billion revenue target, marking a significant shift in the nation’s tax policy landscape.

  • Govt is committed to sparing Ghanaians from additional taxes – Dr. Amin Adam

Govt is committed to sparing Ghanaians from additional taxes – Dr. Amin Adam

Finance Minister-designate, Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam, reassured the public that the government is committed to sparing Ghanaians from additional tax burdens.

Instead, they plan to enforce tax compliance rigorously, targeting those who have been avoiding their tax obligations.

Speaking at a press briefing after Ghana reached a staff-level agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on the Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement, Dr. Adam highlighted the revenue gap created by the suspension of the 15 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) on electricity consumption and the GH¢100 annual levy on petrol and diesel vehicle owners, amounting to GH¢1.8 billion.

He emphasized the need to boost revenue to support the US$3 billion loan-support program while ensuring that the tax burden is not unfairly shouldered by law-abiding taxpayers.

The government aims to implement revenue generation measures outlined in the 2023 and 2024 budgets more effectively.

Dr. Adam underscored the importance of reforms in tax administration to ensure fair assessments and prompt payment of taxes.

“Now, we’re determined to go out there and collect the taxes from those who have not been paying and those who have been evading taxes… to generate the desired revenue to fill the gap created as a result of the suspension of the taxes,” he said.

However, he noted that aggressive revenue collection alone is not sustainable, highlighting the importance of expenditure rationalization.

Regarding expenditure control measures, Dr. Adam mentioned ongoing efforts to clear arrears and enhance financial management through the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).

Acknowledging the challenges faced by Ghanaians due to reforms under the IMF program, Dr. Adam urged patience and perseverance, assuring that the benefits of fiscal consolidation would ultimately benefit the country.

“Some of the reforms that we’re implementing are biting, but I know that we’ll persevere and lead together, and ensure that the benefits of the fiscal consolidation will bring significant relief to the people of Ghana so that we can be counted once again as one of the fastest growing in the world,” he said.

Julie Essiam, Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), elaborated on alternative revenue mobilization strategies, focusing on compliance measures for resident Ghanaians’ foreign income.

Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring that state institutions avoid fiscal derailment during election years, pledging to maintain program implementation consistency.

The IMF is expected to approve Ghana’s GHS$360m third tranche in June, bringing the total disbursement to US$1.56 bn under the ECF arrangement, supporting Ghana’s post-COVID-19 economic growth and stability goals.

Mahama is a talkative, vote for Bawumia – Nana Kay tells Ghanaians

A member of the Communications team for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Kwadwo Agyei Yeboah, commonly known as Nana Kay, has asserted that former President John Dramani Mahama is not suitable to lead the nation as president.

He argued that Mr. Mahama’s desire for a honeymoon period from labor unions indicates his lack of preparedness to assume the presidency.

Mr. Mahama mentioned that the Akufo-Addo government had depleted the nation’s finances, hence he was refraining from making any commitments.

Speaking at a ‘Campus Connect’ event in Hohoe, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer remarked that Ghana is currently facing financial difficulties.

“This country is in dire straits, and so, we appeal to you that when we assume office, grant us a grace period. Let’s organize things so we can stabilize the economy,” he expressed.

In his view, Ghana is not in a position to grant a grace period to any president, as there is no time to waste; the president-elect must begin work immediately after inauguration.

“And I will plead with the teacher union: GNAT, NAGRAT, UTAG, and TEWU and all of them; I know all of you are clamouring for allowances.

“Let me caution you that in 2025 when we take over, we will show you the books and the finances of this country, and when we have done that, we can accede to your demands again, and that’s why I’m being very measured in the promises that I make because we all know the crisis in which this country has been plunged,” he further indicated.

But, Nana Kay believes that Ghana cannot afford to offer any president a grace period, as there’s no time to spare; the president-elect must commence work immediately after taking the oath of office.

Speaking to Accra-based Wontumi FM, Nana Kay drew a parallel, questioning “Would you hire someone who begs for a job, but demands that you give them time to adjust to the position? JM is requesting this.

“H.E. Mahama is simply not prepared, hmm,” Nana Kay said.

“All he’s doing is trying to use words to gain authority. We need doers, therefore technically please don’t bother with talkers. Dismiss H.E. Mahama Dr. Bawumia deserves your vote because he is a doer.”

“And you will realise the harm that the NPP administration has done to Ghana’s economy.

  • GRIDCo analyzes why Ghanaians are experiencing dumsor currently

GRIDCo analyzes why Ghanaians are experiencing dumsor currently

The following analysis by GRIDCo delves into Ghana’s power supply situation spanning from March 27 to April 2, 2024, shedding light on the factors contributing to the recurrence of dumsor or load management.

Since the onset of March 2024, GRIDCo has been diligently monitoring Ghana’s power generation crisis, acknowledging the hurdles in meeting the nation’s electricity demands. The decision to curtail power exports as of March 27 underscores the severity of the situation, signaling an urgent need for proactive measures and strategic planning.

Ghana’s peak electricity demand has surged to 3,618 MW, surpassing the available capacity of 3,251 MW by a significant margin. Despite having an installed capacity of 5,626 MW, the country is utilizing only around 58% of its total capacity, resulting in a substantial deficit of 2,375 MW. This deficit is further compounded by a 740 MW shortfall attributed to ongoing maintenance activities, placing additional strain on the electricity supply infrastructure.

Amidst the maintenance-related challenges, uncertainties loom over the restoration timelines for 330 MW of capacity, adding complexity to the grid’s stability. Moreover, the absence of 4 thermal plants, collectively capable of generating 595 MW, due to inadequate fuel supply exacerbates the situation. Additionally, a fault in the TICO unit 3 plant has rendered 120 MW unavailable until December 2024, impacting the entire year’s power generation by that capacity.

As a result, Ghana grapples with a significant 1,455 MW shortfall in electricity generation capability, with limitations in gas supply further exacerbating the challenge. Despite efforts to reduce power exports by 40% during peak hours to prioritize local demand, the gap persists.

The hydroelectric landscape presents a mixed picture, with the Akosombo dam maintaining stable electricity generation owing to its sufficient water levels. However, declining water levels at the Bui dam raise concerns. If this downward trend persists, the Bui dam’s ability to generate power could be compromised, necessitating its restricted usage to peak hours only.

The user wrote, “The fact that people in power (celebrities) such as yourself shouldn’t be where they are today. We sure know that it’s not degrees that got most of y’all where y’all at but wickedness and sleeping with bosses.”

Clearly displeased by the remark, Serwaa swiftly responded, dismissing the claim that she didn’t earn her position through merit.

Addressing the accusation, Serwaa retorted, “Oww my dear, I feel so sorry for you. But if you have a boss, sleep with the person since you’re so sure that’s how they got there. Ofui.”

Don’t insist on getting a passport if you can’t afford – Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has recommended that Ghanaians unable to afford a passport should abstain from applying for it, emphasizing that passports are no longer the primary means of identification.

Addressing journalists, she underscored the efficacy of the national identification system as the principal form of identification.

Botchwey remarked, “Today, as we speak, we have the National Identification that is working very well, so that’s our primary source of identification. No longer the passport.

“And even those who have the national ID can travel into the country with it. So, then, I’m humbly asking Ghanaians that, please, if you do not need a passport and because you cannot afford it, please, humbly, I’m asking you not to go for a passport because it’s no longer your primary source of identification,” she added.

“If the government is subsidising heavily, it’s difficult to provide any good services to Ghanaians,” she said.

She added, “Even individuals possessing the national ID can utilize it for travel within the country. Hence, I respectfully urge Ghanaians who do not require a passport due to financial constraints to refrain from obtaining one.”

Expressing apprehension regarding the government’s subsidy of passport applications, she cautioned that maintaining such subsidies could compromise service quality for citizens. “Heavy government subsidies make it challenging to deliver quality services,” she stated.

Botchwey assured collaboration with Parliament in the event of a review of passport fees, stressing that fee adjustments aim not to burden citizens financially.

The Ministry recently announced fee increments for passport services, effective April 1, 2024, in alignment with the 2023 Fees and Charges regulations, L.I. 2481.

Under the new fee structure, the processing fee for an expedited 48-page passport is GH¢800, while a 32-page application costs GH¢700.

She noted: “Fees come from the Parliament of Ghana. We make a presentation to them; we give them the bare facts of what it is. Parliament is aware of this, and these charges came from Parliament. If Parliament decides, we should go back. We will have to look at it. It is Parliament that has decided, and we will go by it.”

  • NIC, partners collaborate to enhance inclusive insurance for Ghanaians

NIC, partners collaborate to enhance inclusive insurance for Ghanaians

The National Insurance Commission (NIC) is collaborating with its partners to enhance the accessibility of insurance products and services, aiming to foster financial inclusion and improve the quality of life for more Ghanaians.

Since 2010, the NIC has been dedicated to establishing an inclusive insurance framework in Ghana, supported by technical and financial assistance from the German development Cooperation (GIZ) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Numerous initiatives have been implemented to drive the growth of the inclusive insurance market.

Speaking at a validation workshop in Accra, Acting Commissioner of Insurance, Mr. Michael Kofi Andoh, emphasized the NIC’s commitment to working with its partners to identify gaps and opportunities in their collaborative efforts thus far.

Mr Andoh noted that “the focus of insurance has been on white and blue colour employees and people who receive salaries and operate bank accounts but the majority of our people are petty traders, farmers, masons, carpenters they operate in the informal sector and so if we leave the insurance the way it is, in the conventional space then most of our people will not have access to insurance; it is not that they don’t need insurance but they don’t have access to it due to the way it is structured and that’s where the inclusive insurance conversation comes in.”

In recent years, the Commission has undertaken various preparations for the anticipated expansion of access, including enhancing the capabilities of insurers and implementing regulatory adjustments.

Mr. Andoh noted that the NIC had provided essential training to insurance companies and facilitated the development of products tailored to meet market demands.

Sukhrob Khoshmukhamedov, Deputy Resident Representative at UNDP, explained that UNDP’s support for organizing the workshop stemmed from their commitment to…“insurance in general is very important for any country, particularly for Ghana and it is more important taking into account the issue of disasters.”

He noted that insurance was critical for farmers in the wake of the impact of climate change, so when farmers are insured against drought or flood, they will be able to sustain their businesses and livelihoods.

“Inclusive insurance will play a vital role as a catalyst for social and economic development while promoting financial inclusion and safeguarding the well-being of vulnerable populations,” he added.

The partners are confident of coming up with an inclusive insurance regulatory strategy and roadmap which will rope in the informal sector, ensuring the desired financial inclusivity.

  • Why the delay when 275 MPs have agreed to criminalize LGBTQ+? – Rev Kwadwo Bempah

Why the delay when 275 MPs have agreed to criminalize LGBTQ+? – Rev Kwadwo Bempah

Senior Pastor of Holy Hill Chapel, Assemblies of God, Rev. Dr. Kwadwo Boateng Bempah, has expressed concern regarding the delay in President Akufo-Addo’s assent to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, despite its passage by Ghana’s Parliament.

During a sermon, the clergyman voiced his astonishment at the delay, questioning why the bill, which criminalizes LGBT+ activities, has not yet received presidential approval despite unanimous support from all 275 Members of Parliament.

He underscored the significance of the MPs’ unanimous vote, stating that it represents the collective stance of all Ghanaians on the issue.

Rev. Dr. Boateng Bempah posed the question “How many parliamentarians are there in Parliament? 275. Why are they there I am asking you, man of God? Are they not representing us?”.

“How come one person is waiting? Because what they are saying represents all of us…When they were voting no MP lifted his hands. Don’t sit down and tell me, pastor you can’t talk politics, this is not politics, this is our life, LGBT+ is not politics but rather it is human life,” he added.

He urged against dismissing the issue as merely political, asserting that it pertains to human life rather than politics.

The anti-LGBT+ bill, as passed by Parliament, outlaws LGBT activities and prohibits their promotion, advocacy, and funding. Offenders could face imprisonment ranging from six months to three years, with sponsors and promoters subject to three to five years’ imprisonment.

President Akufo-Addo has postponed his decision on signing the bill into law, citing a constitutional challenge in the Supreme Court.

However, should the president opt against it, MPs retain the option to override his decision by a two-thirds majority vote, thereby making the bill enforceable.

Bawumia who has crippled Ghana’s public debt cannot be made president – NDC

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Salim Adams has cautioned Ghanaians against voting for the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming December polls.

Taking to the X platform he described Dr Bawumia as the “so-called Economic Messiah” who should not be trusted to turn Ghana’s economic woes around.

He added that during the flagbearer of the NDC’s, John Dramani Mahama’s tenure, Ghana’s public debt in 2016 was 120 billion but 610 billion under the NPP government.

According to him Bawumia has nothing to offer when he assumes the presidency of the country as he has already failed in  delegating his roles as the vice-president.

“From Nkrumah to Mahama, our public debt was 120 billion in 2016. Today, it’s a shocking 610 billion under #Bawuliar, the so-called Economic Messiah. How can anyone trust such reckless leadership? Voting for him is a betrayal of our future,” he wrote.

His comment is in line with recent revelations regarding Ghana’s public debt which have stirred significant apprehension and debate across the nation.

According to the March 2024 Summary of Economic and Financial Data released by the Bank of Ghana, Ghana’s public debt surged to GH¢610 billion ($52.4 billion) by the end of 2023. This marks an increase of GH¢42.7 billion from September 2023 to December 2023, following a decrease of GH¢14.2 billion recorded between June 2023 and September 2023, bringing the debt to GH¢567.3 billion ($51.0 billion).

The total public debt now represents 72.5% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), indicating that the country’s debt situation remains challenging despite the completion of the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme during the period.

While the domestic debt rose by GH¢19.1 billion, the external debt climbed by GH¢23.6 billion, primarily due to the depreciation of the cedi.

Data from the Central Bank further disclosed that the external component of the total public debt reached $30.1 billion (¢350.3 billion) in December 2023, accounting for 41.6% of GDP. Meanwhile, the domestic debt stood at ¢259.7 billion in December 2023, equivalent to approximately 30.1% of GDP.

However, the report omitted information regarding the financial sector resolution debt and other liabilities such as the energy sector debt.

Ghanaians are not ready to quit NDC, NPP to vote for Cheddar – Nana Aba Anamoah

Media personality Nana Aba Anamoah has offered her perspective on why she believes it will be challenging for Nana Kwame Bediako, also known as Cheddar, the leader of The New Force political movement, to attain the presidency.

While acknowledging the desire among Ghanaians for fresh leadership, Nana Aba expressed skepticism about the likelihood of voters abandoning the entrenched New Patriotic Party (NPP) and National Democratic Congress (NDC) in favor of Cheddar.

She acknowledged Cheddar’s genuine concern for the welfare of Ghanaians and his determination to enact positive change, but she described the endeavor as a formidable task.

Nana Aba emphasized that even if Cheddar falls short of winning the general election or securing the presidency, his presence has made a significant impact within political circles.

“We definitely need a new force. I have engaged Freedom Jacob Caesar [Cheddar] a couple of times, he is a great guy, and I love him. He means well and wants to see people do better in their lives. But I am not sure Ghanaians will give a new force an opportunity, even though we are screaming for one.

“I am not sure if people are ready to leave the NDC and NPP for him. I like the way he has entered the political space; even if he does not make any gains, at least he has made a statement,” she said.

Cheddar is set to participate in the upcoming general elections representing The New Force political movement, vying against the NDC, NPP, and other political parties.

In recent days, he has faced substantial criticism following his pledge to dredge a sea in Kumasi should he win the presidency.

  • “Shameful Republic!” – Barker-Vormawor slams Ghanaians for antagonizing ‘incorruptible’ Anas

“Shameful Republic!” – Barker-Vormawor slams Ghanaians for antagonizing ‘incorruptible’ Anas

Reflecting on the state of Ghana’s democracy, renowned activist and leader of the #FixTheCountry and #OccupyJulorbiHouse movements, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has highlighted the pervasive frustration experienced by citizens who seek to contribute positively to their country’s progress.

The sentiment arises amidst the controversy surrounding investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and the challenges he faces in seeking justice.

Taking to the X platform, Barker-Vormawor expressed profound distress over the situation, lamenting the irony of citizens striving to improve democracy while encountering resistance from the very institutions meant to uphold it.

He underscored the disheartening reality of facing trial for advocating for a better Ghana, juxtaposed with the expectation of justice.

“The most distressing thing about this Anas situation is that, you as a citizen will wake up everyday thinking about how you can do your part to help advance our democracy; and make it better for all its citizen. Then some Judge will be sitting there angry that you do your bit to help improve our country. So that even when you have come seeking justice, they decide to put you on trial instead I see this everyday!

“People who decide to get angry because why do you demand better? Why do you bother about doing something about our situation? Who elected you to ask questions? Why did you want a more accountable Ghana,” he added.

The Ghanaian activist raised questions about the hostile reception faced by those who dare to demand accountability and transparency from their leaders.

He criticized the tendency to vilify individuals who challenge the status quo, questioning why citizens are discouraged from seeking a more accountable nation.

Barker-Vormawor bemoaned the absence of recognition for non-political heroes in Ghana, contrasting the adulation reserved solely for politicians with the demonization of other changemakers.

He questioned whether another figure like  investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas would emerge given the harsh treatment and lack of reward for his efforts.

The activist highlighted Anas’ sacrifices in exposing corruption and holding elected officials accountable, only to be met with accusations and condemnation.

“This is the tragedy of believing in the possibility of Ghana. Because those who stand to benefit from our fight, are the loudest in applauding their oppression! How it is possible for a person to live with so much misery all around us, and not be in constant rage; is a thing of mystery to me.

“With all that happens in this Country and what Anas has done, he comes to court for justice and you tell around and call him a murderer? We have no heroes in this county except politicians. Every other person we demonize! You think another Anas will rise from this ashes? For what recompense? For what reward?,” he added.

He denounced the labeling of Anas as a murderer in the face of his pursuit of justice, branding it as a shameful reflection on the Republic.

“Anas has given up his way of life, so we can hold our elected officials accountable; and for this, he is the devil! Shameful Republic!,” he added.

  • 45,000 Ghanaians are blind due to Glaucoma – GHS

45,000 Ghanaians are blind due to Glaucoma – GHS

Glaucoma has led to blindness in more than 45,000 individuals in Ghana, making it the country with the highest incidence of Glaucoma infections in Africa.

Statistics from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) reveal that Glaucoma contributes to over 19% of all cases of blindness in the nation.

At present, approximately eight out of every 100 Ghanaians aged 30 and above, and nine out of every 100 Ghanaians aged 40 and above, suffer from Glaucoma.

During the 2024 World Glaucoma Week, Dr. Hornametor Afake, Head of the Eye Care Unit at GHS, informed the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that Glaucoma is the primary cause of preventable irreversible blindness in Ghana and globally, unlike cataracts, which are reversible.

With a prevalence rate of 0.74%, Ghana has around 230,000 people living with blindness, with 54.4% of cases attributed to cataracts.

Glaucoma encompasses a range of eye disorders leading to progressive damage to the optic nerve, resulting in irreversible blindness if left untreated.

Major risk factors for Glaucoma include elevated intraocular pressure, African descent, family history, aging, steroid use, myopia, and hyperopia.

World Glaucoma Week, organized by the World Glaucoma Association, spans from March 10th to 16th, with the theme “Uniting for a Glaucoma-Free World,” aiming to mobilize global efforts against Glaucoma-induced blindness.

Current global estimates indicate that 78 million people suffer from Glaucoma, with 7.7 million experiencing moderate to severe vision impairment or blindness. By 2040, it’s predicted that 111.8 million people will have Glaucoma.

Despite the high prevalence, more than half of Glaucoma cases go undetected in developed countries, rising to 90% in developing nations like Ghana.

Awareness campaigns are crucial as Glaucoma often manifests asymptomatically in its early stages, leading to late presentation and irreversible vision loss.

Regular eye examinations, beginning at age 20 and increasing in frequency with age, are recommended for early detection.

Similar to hypertension, Glaucoma is a chronic condition managed through medications like eye drops and surgery.

Healthcare providers, particularly at the primary level, are trained to detect Glaucoma early, especially in rural areas where most cases originate.

There’s a call for essential Glaucoma medications to be covered by the National Health Insurance scheme due to their often prohibitive costs.

Early detection, screening, and treatment are essential to prevent irreversible vision loss due to Glaucoma.

Kenkey and fish, bread and rice make it to the floor of parliament

Member of Parliament for the Kpando constituency, Della Adjoa Sowah, sheds light on the growing economic challenges facing Ghanaians, backed by tangible examples of daily food items.

Drawing a stark comparison between the Mahama and Akufo-Addo administrations, she highlighted the alarming surge in food prices under the current government.

Presenting samples of essential foods such as kenkey, bread, and a 50kg bag of rice, Sowah points out significant disparities in costs during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) era versus the New Patriotic Party (NPP) era.

According to her, the price hike is staggering, with a ball of kenkey skyrocketing from 1 Ghana cedi in the Mahama era to 5 Ghana cedis under Akufo-Addo’s leadership.

“A ball of Kenkey in the Mahama era was C1GH compared to Akufo-Addo’s C5GH, a loaf of bread C2GH compared to Akufo-Addo’s C20GH,” stated Della Adjoa Sowah, emphasizing the harsh impact on the daily lives of Ghanaians.

Expressing concern for the future, she asserts that the Akufo-Addo-led NPP government has let down the citizens, predicting further economic decline if the party retains power.

  • 24-hour economy won’t work, bring another policy – Ghanaian to NDC

24-hour economy won’t work, bring another policy – Ghanaian to NDC

A man in a viral video has stated that the Ghanaians will not cast their votes to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama come December 7.

He explained that John Dramani Mahama’s intention to implement a 24-hour economy is a fiasco as it is a way to scam Ghanaians.

According to him, Mahama must come up with a policy that will garner support from electorates and not one that will not contribute to the development of the country.

“NDC National Chairman, Aseidu Nketia, JohnDramani Mahama and Fiifi Kwetey, Ghanaians say your 24-hour economy is a scam. Bring another plan on board It won’t work,” he added.

Mahama’s proposal for a 24-hour economy forms a key component of his 2024 presidential election agenda, driven by the belief that such a policy would significantly contribute to economic expansion and youth employment.

In commemoration of the 2023 International Youth Day, Mahama affirmed his administration’s commitment to nurturing a skilled and entrepreneurial youth.

However, Mr. Kyerematen has stressed that the successful realization of this ambitious goal necessitates robust frameworks for industrialization, comprehensive infrastructure development, and a thriving tourism sector.

Despite Mahama’s economic policy drawing support, it has faced criticism, notably from Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

During his Northern Region tour, Dr. Bawumia expressed skepticism about the feasibility of implementing a 24-hour economy.

He argued that such an endeavor requires a profound understanding of its implications and prerequisites.

“I hear John Mahama has a new idea, and he wants to run a 24-hour economy. I say, where did he get this idea from? It is not a bright idea! A 24-hour economy cannot be legislated by the government. Today, there are many businesses that are already working for 24 hours. Hospitals are open for 24 hours. You can buy electricity for 24 hours. Because of digitalization, you can transfer money for 24 hours. There are many chop bars and restaurants that are open for 24 hours,” said Dr. Bawumia.

Ghanaians with higher credentials are the most unemployed – GSS

A recent study by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has revealed that despite their availability and willingness to work, a significant portion of well-educated Ghanaians struggle to secure employment.

According to the Ghana 2023 Annual Household Income and Expenditure Survey (AHIES), spanning from January 2022 to September 2023, approximately 22.3% of individuals who experienced unemployment for a continuous 21-month period held tertiary education qualifications.

Additionally, nearly 48% of those facing unemployment had completed secondary education.

The Government Statistician, Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, shared these labor statistics, emphasizing that around 200,000 individuals encountered unemployment spells lasting at least 12 months during this period.

Notably, the issue was more prevalent among females, urban residents, individuals with secondary education, and those aged between 15 and 24 years.

“This number reduces to about 752,000 persons who as of the third quarter of 2023 had not been employed.

The survey differentiated unemployment spells by tracking individuals unemployed for two quarters (six months) between the second and third quarters of 2023, those jobless for nine months from the first quarter to the third quarter of 2023, and those unemployed for the entire 21-month period from the first quarter of 2022 to the third quarter of 2023.

The study highlighted that the total number of people unemployed for six months in the second and third quarters of 2023 was approximately 1.3 million, decreasing to 752,000 by the third quarter of 2023. Professor Annim stressed the significance of addressing youth unemployment, which constituted over three-quarters of the total unemployed population of 1.85 million.

The report indicated a year-on-year increase in the unemployment rate, with specific regions experiencing notable variations. The Director of Research, Statistics, and Information Management at the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, George Amoah, emphasized the government’s reliance on such statistics for planning and expressed a commitment to leveraging the report to promote decent work for the population.

The National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has asserted the party’s confidence that Ghanaians will reject the ruling NPP government.

During a press conference titled the “Moment of Truth” series in Accra, Mr Gyamfi criticized the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government for spending USD$12 million on the failed Agyapa Royalties deal.

Mr Gyamfi stated, “The only way Ghanaians can get to the bottom of the litany of corruption acts and scandals involving officials of this government, including [Vice President] Bawumia himself, is for the good people of Ghana to resoundingly boot the NPP out of government on 7th December 2024.” He emphasized that voting the NPP out is “the surest bet of exacting genuine accountability” for corrupt acts in the current government.

The CEO of the Minerals Income Investment Fund, Edward Nana Yaw Koranteng, informed the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) that $12 million was spent on the Agyapa Royalties deal, which President Nana Akufo-Addo cancelled in 2021.

“My understanding, honourable chair, is that the Ministry of Finance procured the services of international consultancy and companies and financial institutions that have done this in the past and that the advice provided was what Ministry of Finance stood on”, Mr Koranteng told the committee on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

“We started with the Ministry of Finance and from the documents that we have, it is clear that the correct advice was provided on the set-up of a gold royalties company where the streaming of the royalties would benefit Ghana,” he added.

Mr Gyamfi promised that the next NDC government would investigate the Agyapa scandal, recover illegal payments, and ensure prosecution of all perpetrators.

The NDC also pledged to probe and prosecute those involved in the failed Agyapa Royalties deal when in office.

  • You disrespected Ghanaians when you said you were a driver’s mate – Nana Ohene Ntow to Bawumia

You disrespected Ghanaians when you said you were a driver’s mate – Nana Ohene Ntow to Bawumia

The former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Ohene Ntow, has strongly rebuffed Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent comparison of himself to a “driver’s mate” within the Akufo-Addo government.

Dr. Bawumia suggested that he should ascend to the presidency to implement his unique vision.

In an interview on GHOne TV on February 20, 2024, Nana Ohene Ntow expressed his disapproval, deeming Dr. Bawumia’s comments both pitiful and insulting to the people of Ghana.

He argued that such statements imply the vice president position is redundant and should be eliminated.

Nana Ohene Ntow asserted, “Once a candidate is voted as president, his running mate is deemed to have been voted. And two, if the president is indisposed today or he’s out of the jurisdiction today, it is the vice president who occupies his shoes until he returns to post.

“So, if Bawumia was in that position and is now telling Ghanaians that that position is all useless, you can’t do anything with the position of a vice president. I think it is even an insult to the constitution of Ghana.”

He added, “Then we probably should listen to Bawumia and abolish the position of vice president because it’s useless. How can you talk like that to the people of Ghana?”

Ohene Ntow, who is the spokesperson of the leader of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen, said that the vice president’s remarks are the worst he has heard from a presidential contender.

Nana Ohene Ntow, also the spokesperson for Alan Kyerematen, leader of the Movement for Change, described Dr. Bawumia‘s remarks as the most disheartening he has heard from a presidential contender.

“That is why I’m saying that statement is the most pathetic statement I ever heard from anyone aspiring to become president of Ghana,” he added.

“After my moving shoot country” – Netizens roast LilWin over social media post

Ghanaian entertainer LilWin is currently weathering a storm of criticism from social media users due to grammatical errors found in his recent Instagram post discussing his contemplation of relocating from Ghana to Togo.

In the post, Lilwin expressed dissatisfaction with the perceived lack of love from Ghanaians and conveyed his belief that the people of Togo would offer him a warmer reception.

However, the situation took a turn for the worse when Lilwin took charge of crafting the caption for the post.

The poorly constructed sentence, “After my moving shoot Country, call Ghana I will leave this country to stay Togo because Togopeople need me one Ghana one love ❤️ ❤️,” triggered a wave of criticism regarding his linguistic proficiency.

Social media users did not hold back in their responses, with one commentator suggesting, “He should re-enroll himself in his own school and focus on improving his language skills, reading, and writing. Additionally, he should learn to humble himself, especially when it comes to respecting others.” Another individual added, “Kwasia jon… it’s true we don’t need greedy people like you in Ghana.”

NPP never promised to make your lives perfect in our manifesto – Oppong-Nkrumah tells Ghanaians

Minister for Information Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah has clarified that the Akufo-Addo government did not promise to create a perfect Ghana but rather pledged to improve the country’s fortunes.

He emphasized that the concept of perfection was not part of the NPP’s manifesto. Despite the ongoing challenges, he highlighted the government’s progress in stabilizing the economy compared to the previous administration.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Citi TV, Mr. Oppong-Nkrumah is said to have acknowledged that while significant progress has been made, many Ghanaians still face difficulties.

“We are not in a perfect place, but we have made significant progress from where we started in January 2017. We have also made significant progress on the promises and commitments that we made. And we have made significant progress as compared to our peers [NDC].

“If inflation drops from 50-something per cent to 20-something per cent. What it means is that year to date, the prices of goods and services in the inflationary basket are going up to about 20 per cent, which is still difficult for a lot of people.

He continued, “If you look at the trend and where we have come from, then you can then make the point that we are making progress. Yes, we are not in a perfect place, but we are making progress. We must consolidate and grow on this path. I didn’t see perfection in the NPP manifesto, perfection was not in the manifesto. Perfection, I’m not sure, that was promised.”

The Minister for Information also assured that the government would build upon unfulfilled promises.

“There were some specific promises that were made, a good number of them have been achieved, but some of them have not been achieved. Life is continual, and we will build on those,” Oppong-Nkrumah assured.

43% of Ghanaians unprepared for financial risks – Report

A 2023 report released by Old Mutual indicates that 43 percent of Ghanaians are ill-prepared to undertake any form of financial risk.

This lack of readiness is attributed to a general reluctance among citizens to engage in financial risk-taking.

The report, titled the Old Mutual Financial Services Monitor, specifically highlights the impact of the government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme on the financial sector as a contributing factor.

The survey conducted for the report revealed that only 24 percent of the sampled Ghanaians were open to taking significant financial risks with the expectation of substantial returns.

Additionally, approximately 19 percent were identified as individuals willing to take above-average financial risks for above-average returns.

“Similarly, those who take above-average financial risks expecting to earn above-average returns are about 19%,” the report said.

Another significant finding from the Old Mutual report is that seven out of 10 working Ghanaians do not seek the services of a financial adviser for counsel on their finances. Consequently, around 46 percent expressed uncertainty about whom to turn to for financial guidance.

Seeing and hearing Ghanaians insult my husband makes me sad – Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s wife

The wife of Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Irene Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has shared insights on how she copes with news about her husband, acknowledging the occasional hurt from insults but emphasizing her resilient demeanor.

In an interview on Nhyira FM, she expressed the challenge of waking up to her husband’s name in the news with various comments, but she has developed a tough skin to endure it while maintaining outward calm.

When asked about managing marriage to a politician, she highlighted respect and patience as crucial elements for their successful relationship, recognizing the necessity of sharing a public figure with the nation.

“It is not easy to wake up in the morning and see your husband’s name in the news, with people saying all sorts of things. He is precious to my children, and I am human. I’m sometimes hurt when Ghanaians insult my husband, but I have tough skin to bear it, even though I remain outwardly calm.”

Reflecting on her parents’ marriage, she emphasized implementing the respect her mother showed her father. She advised having a strong mind and a big heart to navigate the diverse challenges of marriage.

Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the MP for Suame constituency, known for his significant roles in parliamentary leadership, including Minority Leader, Majority Leader, and Minister of State at the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, has decided not to seek re-election in 2024 due to age and terms served.

“My marriage life has been guided by my parents’ marriage. The respect my mother gives to my father is something I implement in mine. Marriage is a journey, and it is not the same pattern. You need a strong mind and a big heart to accommodate everything. Sometimes, you don’t have to react; just have patience, and your husband will reflect.”

Despite pressure to contest, he reaffirmed his decision, stating, “I have spoken and made my stance clear.”

The exiting lawmaker, married with five children, hails from Bremang-Afrancho in Kumasi and holds a BSc in Planning from KNUST (1982), being a development planner, architect, and quantity surveyor.

I am not that kind of person who promises and doesn’t deliver – Mahama to Ghanaians

Presidential contender John Mahama from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has emphasized his commitment to avoiding exaggerated promises for political gain, particularly steering clear of across-the-board salary increases.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Tamale during his ‘Building the Ghana We Want Together Tour,’ the former president stressed his preference for honesty in securing votes.

In addressing pre-tertiary teachers, Mahama stated, “I’ve said that the economy is in a big mess, so, I cannot promise everybody I’m going to increase salary and all that.”

He contrasted his approach with past promises made by President Nana Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party, stating, “I won’t be like those dishonest people who came to promise heaven that they will build factories in every district, they’ll build a dam in every village, I’m not that kind of person.”

While acknowledging the economic challenges, Mahama refrained from committing to a salary increase.

Instead, he acknowledged the difficulties faced by pre-tertiary teachers and proposed solutions, such as providing accommodation in schools to encourage more teachers to reside on campus.

  • “No gree” for Bawumia’s empty promises – Sam George to Ghanaians

“No gree” for Bawumia’s empty promises – Sam George to Ghanaians

Ningo-Prampram’s Member of Parliament (MP), Sam George, has expressed his steadfast stance against what he perceives as unfulfilled promises by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasizing a lack of tolerance for deceit.

In an interview with GhanaWeb, Sam George cautioned Ghanaians against being misled by Bawumia’s statements, utilizing the Nigerian slang ‘no gree for anybody’ to convey the importance of not succumbing to manipulation or deception.

Citing instances where he believes Bawumia has fallen short, Sam George pointed to the disputed claim of digitizing corruption at the passport office, challenging the authenticity of Bawumia’s digitization assertions.

He also criticized the repeated promises made by Bawumia regarding Ghana Card numbers for children from birth, highlighting the inconsistency in the announcements.

Sam George went on to question Bawumia’s credibility, citing unfulfilled promises such as the construction of 350 schools and the delay in providing laptops to teachers who had paid for them.

“When Dr. Bawumia talks, digitization has taken over corruption at the passport office, did you not see Minister for Foreign Affairs storm the place very angry to sack ‘goro boys’? So where was the digitization? Even that claim of digitization has been disputed by the Daily Graphic report of September 2016 when that project was launched. Even the fact-check Ghana has called Dr. Bawumia a liar for putting out such fake information. A man’s words are what you will judge him on. This is the same person who made promises that they will build 350 schools, promising tertiary student loan for laptops, meanwhile, he has taken money from teachers and they have not gotten their laptops yet.

“He promises that children will now get unique Ghana Card numbers from birth. This is a story that was first announced by Bawumia in November 2021. He again announced in April 2022, in June 2022, February 2023, and April 2023, so this is the 6th time Bawumia is making such a promise. The macro indicators Bawumia gave are false and misleading and you sit and ask who are his advisors.”

The Ningo-Prampram MP further stated that, “You say you are the one responsible for all digitization stuff yet you say, as for the E-Levy, I am not part of it. I mean this is a man we have come to know, to understand and recognize him for who he is, that he is a confident trickster, and he is someone who is going to trick the words and use fluency and eloquence bamboozle through Ghanaians. Right now, our eyes are open and this year, 2024, the motto is ‘no gree for anybody’ not even Bawumia and his lies.”

He criticized Bawumia’s role in the controversial E-Levy, emphasizing the contradictory statement that he is not part of it despite being responsible for digitization efforts.

The Ningo-Prampram MP characterized Bawumia as a “confident trickster” and urged Ghanaians to be wary of his eloquence and fluency in delivering promises. With the motto for 2024 being ‘no gree for anybody,’ Sam George conveyed a clear message of skepticism towards Bawumia and his alleged lies.

Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s Flagbearer, recently announced plans to abolish the E-Levy, Bet Tax, and Emissions Tax if elected as the President of Ghana.

This announcement follows the introduction of the controversial E-Levy in 2022, which had initially faced opposition from Bawumia.

  • Bawumia has restored the hope of Ghanaians with his vision – Tema MCE

Bawumia has restored the hope of Ghanaians with his vision – Tema MCE

The Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Yohane Amarh Ashitey, has commended Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for articulating his vision for the 2024 elections.

Expressing his thoughts on the impressive promises made by Dr. Bawumia during the Ghana’s Next Chapter address on February 7, 2024, Ashitey admitted to being pleasantly surprised.

While acknowledging Dr. Bawumia’s reputation for delivering inspiring vision statements, Ashitey emphasized the astonishing nature of the Vice President’s address, providing genuine hope for average Ghanaians.

“I mean, this is Dr. Bawumia and I knew we were going to get an inspiring vision statement from him, but even I must admit that what he delivered is mind blowing. Far beyond inspiration, Dr. Bawumia gave us real hope that the average Ghanaian can trust in”, the MCE said in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the address.

In the address, Dr. Bawumia pledged to abolish the unpopular e-levy, recognizing its burden on the less privileged in society. He also outlined plans to reform the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to broaden the tax net, addressing the current imbalance where only a few taxpayers bear the burden.

Characterizing the current tax regime as outdated and inherited from colonial times, Dr. Bawumia highlighted existing loopholes that result in the GRA failing to collect approximately 13% of collectable tax, amounting to around GHC24 billion.

Mr Amarh Ashitey praised Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to closing these loopholes, foreseeing a positive impact on the need for future IMF borrowings or bailouts.

“Imagine that we are able to plug this loophole, there will never be the need to return to the IMF to borrow or undergo another bailout,” Amarh Ashitey said.

Additionally, the MCE lauded Dr. Bawumia’s announcements to abolish the proposed 15% tax on electricity, emission tax, and the betting tax, which has been a source of dissatisfaction for many Ghanaian youth.

In response to criticism, especially from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), regarding Dr. Bawumia’s reversal of taxes introduced by the Akufo-Addo government, Ashitey dismissed it as an attempt to use propaganda to conceal the discredited claim that Dr. Bawumia would be subservient to President Akufo-Addo if elected president.

According to Ashitey, Dr. Bawumia’s decisions demonstrate his autonomy and assertiveness, showcasing his genuine stance on issues that he may have disagreed with during his role as Vice President.

“We are seeing a vintage Dr. Bawumia who disagreed with many of the policies that were adopted by cabinet now asserting his own point of view on these issues. His decision to abolish e-levy, tax on betting, and tax on electricity shows you that he was against them but because he was not the president, was forced to endure them. Now that he is becoming his own man, we are seeing what really he wants for Ghanaians”, he said.

Bawumia can’t swerve responsibility for economic mess – NDC

Joyce Bawah Mogtari, the Special Aide to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, is not mincing words in response to attempts by the governing New Patriotic Party’s 2024 presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and his team, to distance the second gentleman of the land from the current economic challenges facing the country.

Mogtari contends that Dr. Bawumia, as a significant figure in the Akufo-Addo administration, is accountable for the economic mismanagement issues.

In a social media post, she underscored that Ghanaians are well aware of the unfavorable conditions under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led administration, making it impossible for the Vice President to absolve himself from blame.

With Dr. Bawumia leading the NPP as its flagbearer in the upcoming elections, Mogtari emphasized that he has been portrayed as an economic messiah and the head of the Akufo-Addo government’s economic management team since assuming the role of Vice President in 2017.

Mogtari urged Ghanaians to perceive the vice president in conjunction with his president, asserting that he offers nothing different to the citizens.

This statement from Mogtari signals a robust response to the attempts to dissociate Dr. Bawumia from the economic challenges, emphasizing the importance of holding him accountable for the state of the country’s economy.

“We should all pay close attention to the Nana Addo/Bawumia union and how it operates. This union may be willing to sacrifice the ‘marriage’ for political gain and may try to deceive us by presenting a separation of the union just as a matter of convenience,” she wrote on X.

“Just like the attempt to discredit the #24HourEconomy, any effort to decouple the union will fail because we know that this union, built on lies, will do anything for power, even if it means a complete dissolution of the union.”
