The title, signifying a ‘leader with good intentions and an immaculate heart,’ was granted by the Zini Kuoro in recognition of Mahama’s demonstrated honesty, visionary leadership, and his positive contributions to the well-being of the Ghanaian people and governance.

It was known from day 1 that Mahama would choose Prof. Jane Naana – Kwesi Pratt

Ghanaian journalist and managing editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr, emphasized the public acknowledgment that Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang will retain her role as Vice to NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama.

Pratt emphasised the pivotal role played by Professor Opoku-Agyemang during the 2020 election, underlining her significant influence as a key factor in the NDC’s increased parliamentary representation.

He argued that her continued leadership is crucial for the party’s success and that choosing an alternative candidate could lead to unnecessary controversy.

“Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang deserves to be chosen again; her influence cannot be underestimated. There would be too much controversy if another candidate was chosen,” Pratt stated during the interview on peace fm.

As anticipation builds for the NDC’s decision on their vice flagbearer for the 2024 elections, Pratt’s endorsement adds weight to the growing support for Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang’s continued role within the party, emphasizing her leadership and influence as instrumental to the party’s future success.

  • Even God will be angry with us; $450m on Cathedral is unnecessary – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Even God will be angry with us; $450m on Cathedral is unnecessary – Mahama to Akufo-Addo

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed strong disapproval of the allocation of $450 million for the National Cathedral project.

During a gathering with religious leaders in Wa as part of the “Building Ghana Tour,” Mahama criticised the prioritisation of the cathedral over pressing challenges in the education sector.

Mahama questioned the use of public funds for the cathedral, emphasising that President Nana Akufo-Addo’s personal commitment to God should be funded by individuals who share the project’s vision.

“The President said that he made a pledge to God that if he won the election he would build a Cathedral for him. So it is his personal pledge and if he wants to build it, he must gather people who support that conviction to build that and we were told that public funds were not going to be used for the Cathedral,” former president John Dramani Mahama stated.

He highlighted the contradiction between the government’s promise not to use public funds for the cathedral and the revelation that public taxes were being utilised.

“But eventually, we found that the Minister of Finance was releasing public taxes. We can’t use public funds including the funds of people of other denominations to build a Cathedral for Christians alone”, he added.

“So far, 58 million dollars of public funds have been spent just to dig a deep hole and you have to ask yourself is it justified in this day and age when children don’t have desks in schools when children do not have textbooks?”

The former President, appalled by the $58 million spent on digging a hole for the cathedral, pointed out the lack of desks and textbooks in schools.

He argued that redirecting the funds toward education, given the government’s substantial expenses on consultancy services for the cathedral, would be a more judicious use of resources.

Mahama concluded, “For five years, we have not provided our basic schools with textbooks even though we have come out with a new curriculum because we say there is no money, and you say we should use 450 million dollars to build a Cathedral, even God will be angry with us.”

Watch Naana Jane’s reaction when Mahama called her for running mate offer

In a concise 16-second video, former President John Dramani Mahama informed Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang of her continued role as his running mate for the upcoming 2024 general elections.

The video, shared on social media by the former University of Cape Coast Vice Chancellor, captures the moment Mahama’s face appears on the phone screen.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang expressed gratitude for the opportunity, hinting at a later conversation.

“Yeah, hello, oh thank you, thank you so much for the opportunity. Thank you so much, we’d talk later, thank you,” the professor is heard saying.

The NDC’s National Executive Committee officially confirms her as the party’s running mate, and if successful in the 2024 polls, she would make history as the country’s first female vice president.

Mahama has contributed to the high duty at Tema Harbour – Abossey Okai spare parts dealers

The Abossey Okai spare parts dealers have alleged that the sale of Tema Harbour by the former president, John Dramani Mahama during his tenure is taking a toll on their businesses.

Speaking to the media, the dealers claimed that the decision by the flagbearer of the National Democratic (NDC) has contributed to the surge in import duties at the port, negatively impacting their businesses and the economy at large.

The spokesperson for the spare parts dealers, whose identities were not disclosed, voiced concerns about the economic ramifications of what they termed as the “sale of national assets.”

They emphasized the adverse effects on their businesses, citing increased import duties that have reportedly resulted from the alleged sale of the Tema Harbour.

“I would like to convey to him that, just as in the past when Ghanaians and Abossey Okai spare parts dealers initially benefited from the Tema Harbour but later sold it to Vincent Ballore for 2.5 billion for 35 years. In a similar vein, Akufo-Addo attempted to reclaim the harbor for the country but faced a demand of about 25 billion dollars. Where can we source such a substantial amount? This predicament is causing hardship, hindering Abossey Okai Spare Parts dealers from retrieving their items from the port.

Furthermore, the spare parts dealers took the opportunity to commend President Akufo-Addo for his efforts in governance, describing his leadership as tremendous.

They applauded various initiatives undertaken by the Akufo-Addo administration that they believe have positively impacted the economy and created a conducive business environment.

The spare parts dealers expressed their endorsement for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be the next President of Ghana.

They lauded Dr. Bawumia’s role in economic management and policy implementation, stating that he possesses the vision and competence required to lead the nation effectively as well as regain the Tema Harbour.

“I implore Akufo-Addo to consider handing over power to Bawumia, as this could facilitate the recovery of the Tema Harbour, enabling our businesses to thrive once again,” he added.

    Background

A special report by the Pan-African publication African Confidential exposed how Bolloré Africa Logistics secured the rights to construct and operate a cutting-edge container terminal at Ghana’s Tema Port.

Described as a “lifeline” for Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Mali through the joint venture Meridian Port Services (MPS), the agreement, signed during the tenure of former Ghanaian President John Mahama, faced a ministerial investigation after his 2016 defeat to President Nana Akufo-Addo.

The report revealed that Bolloré influenced Mahama to award MPS a secret container terminal contract, violating procurement laws. It alleged overstated investments, reduced Ghana’s equity, established a container handling monopoly, and reduced government fees by $4.1 billion.

Despite the ministerial committee’s recommendation for renegotiation, the Akufo-Addo administration maintained the criticized contracts. The history of these relations, marked by “serious ethical professional deficiencies,” necessitates a careful review, but Akufo-Addo chose to preserve the contracts, raising concerns about ethical standards and party affiliations.

“The terms of the agreements between MPS and the state are so tilted against Ghana’s interests, concluded the report, delivered to ministers in February 2018, they should be renegotiated immediately. Yet the much-criticized contracts are still unchanged,” Africa Confidential said.

  • Diana Asamoah, Cecilia Marfo are no longer on talking terms because of Mahama – Kwaku Manu alleges

Diana Asamoah, Cecilia Marfo are no longer on talking terms because of Mahama – Kwaku Manu alleges

Popular Kumawood actor and media personality, Kwaku Manu, recently shed light on the longstanding feud between Gospel musicians Diana Asamoah and Cecilia Marfo, attributing the discord to a past incident involving former president John Dramani Mahama.

In a viral self-recorded video, Kwaku Manu expressed his perspective on the matter, placing blame on Evangelist Diana Asamoah for the continuous animosity between the two gospel artists.

According to him, Asamoah’s tendency to create issues with her colleagues, including the ongoing attacks on Evangelist Edward Akwasi Boateng, marked her as a source of trouble.

The genesis of the feud, as outlined by Kwaku Manu, can be traced back to a benevolent gesture by former president John Dramani Mahama towards Cecilia Marfo during a time of need.

Marfo, appreciative of the assistance, publicly thanked the former president, which allegedly sparked resentment from Diana Asamoah.

“The woman had a problem, and former president Mahama gave her some money or something, and she came out to thank him, that is all,” Kwaku Manu explained in the video.

Kwaku Manu’s revelation suggests that Diana Asamoah’s discontent with Cecilia Marfo stems from the latter’s acknowledgment of Mahama’s support.

As a result, Diana Asamoah allegedly initiated unnecessary fights and conflicts with Cecilia Marfo.

The disclosure by Kwaku Manu adds a new layer to the ongoing feud between the two gospel musicians, providing insight into the root cause and shedding light on the dynamics within the gospel music industry.

Mahama accuses govt’s over contradictory stance on free SHS

Former President and presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has accused the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) of double standards regarding the ongoing discourse on the review of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

Addressing attendees at the launch of the Ghana National Association of Private Schools week, themed “2024 Elections: The Private Education Manifesto,” Mahama lambasted the government’s handling of the Free SHS policy, alleging a lack of transparency and consistency in its communication.

Mahama pointed to a document submitted by the government to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which pledged to review and rationalize the Free SHS policy. He criticized the discrepancy between the government’s promises to international bodies and its public narrative, accusing the NPP of hypocrisy.

“There’s hypocrisy in this thing about review. If you look at the IMF agreement that this government has signed, under point 47, page 76,” Mahama stated. “This Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government signed an agreement with the IMF in January 2024. And they say that in the educational sector, we will review and rationalize the free SHS. These are their words, not my words.”

Mahama emphasized the need for clarity and honesty in the discourse surrounding the Free SHS policy, urging citizens to scrutinize government actions and statements. He highlighted concerns regarding the implementation and effectiveness of the policy, citing statistics indicating a significant number of students not taking up their places in Free SHS schools.

“The report says that between 2021 to date, over 196,000 children did not take up their place in the free SHS. Even though they were posted and qualified, they didn’t go. We need to find out why they didn’t go,” Mahama explained. “The total amount of money the government has spent on free SHS comes to about ¢5.8 billion. The proportion of the parents is about 77% to the government’s share of about 23%. That is why we must do a review.”

  • All of us would have been dead by now if Mahama was president during the COVID era – KT Hammond

All of us would have been dead by now if Mahama was president during the COVID era – KT Hammond

Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, KT Hammond, has launched a scathing attack on former President John Dramani Mahama, suggesting that Ghana would have faced dire consequences if Mahama were in power during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hammond’s comments were made in praise of President Nana Akufo-Addo‘s handling of the COVID-19 crisis during a recent interview.

Speaking in Parliament on February 27, 2024, after President Akufo-Addo delivered the 2024 State of the Nation Address, Mr Hammond noted that but for President Akufo-Addo’s leadership and decisive actions during the COVID-19 era, all Ghanaians would have been dead by now.

“All of us would have been dead by now if Mahama was president during the COVID era,” Hammond asserted, taking a swipe at Mahama while commending Akufo-Addo for his efforts.

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges globally, affecting countries’ healthcare systems, economies, and social structures.

In Ghana, efforts to combat the virus included measures such as lockdowns, testing and contact tracing, vaccination campaigns and exercises, and public health awareness initiatives.

Ghana recorded 171,653 Coronavirus Cases since the epidemic began and reported 1,456 Coronavirus deaths at the end of the pandemic, according to data from the World Health Organisations (WHO).

KT Hammond believes that the situation could have been worse if the pandemic hit the country during Mr Mahama’s administration.

Mahama accuses NPP of resorting to lies and propaganda against 24-hour economy proposal

Former President John Dramani Mahama and the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) of attempting to undermine his main policy proposal for the 2024 elections, the 24-hour economy policy.

Mr Mahama asserted that the NPP’s response to this proposal has been marked by misinformation and propaganda, signaling what he described as an “uneasy calm” within the ruling party.

He claimed that the widespread acceptance of the 24-hour economy policy has unsettled the NPP, prompting them to resort to deceitful tactics in a bid to discredit the proposal in the eyes of the Ghanaian public.

He further emphasized that Ghanaians, having learned from past experiences, would not be swayed by such tactics, recognizing them as attempts by the NPP to maintain their grip on power through falsehoods.

“The widespread acceptance of the 24-hour policy appears to have sent the NPP campaign into a tailspin, leading to a serious effort to attack it through colony and disinformation in these last few days. But fortified with the knowledge that the days when the NPP assumed that they could use falsehood to deceive Ghanaians for electoral advantage are over,” Mahama stated.

Mahama further asserted that Ghanaians would not believe the NPP, particularly in light of what he described as their “horrific performance” during their seven years in power. He expressed confidence that the electorate would see through the NPP’s tactics and make informed decisions during the upcoming elections.

The NDC’s Policy Dialogue, held on February 22, 2024, aimed to discuss the party’s policy priorities for the forthcoming presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for December 7, 2024, with a specific focus on the 24-hour economy proposal. The event brought together approximately 200 experts, drawn from the Minority Caucus of Parliament and the Social Democratic LAB thematic groups, covering areas such as human development, finance, economy, and governance.

Mahama’s remarks underscore the intensifying political climate in Ghana as parties gear up for the upcoming elections, with policy proposals and their reception becoming focal points of debate and contention.

As the campaign season progresses, both the NDC and the NPP are expected to continue advocating for their respective platforms while engaging in robust exchanges over the direction of the country’s future policies and governance.

People don’t get your 24-hour economy…come again – Mahama told

A Senior Research Fellow of the Kumasi Technical University, Professor Smart Sarpong, has asked the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to provide a better explanation of the 24-hour economy proposed by former President John Dramani Mahama

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM, Prof Smart noted that Ghanaians have been plunged into a state of confusion given the various conflicting explanations offered by members of the NDC.

Giving his submission, he lauded the policy, however, he contended that the various conflicting explanations are marring its beauty.

He, thus, entreated the party to come clear on the subject so that Ghanaians can have a serious conversion on it.

“Those who are explaining do not seem to have a full grasp of the policy. it also If it is that serious, let’s have a serious conversation about it,” he said.

Ghanaians have endorsed my 24-hour economic policy; the NPP campaign is in a tailspin – Mahama

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, said during a national policy forum at the Peduase Lodge that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is feeling uneasy due to the overwhelming endorsement of his 24-hour economy idea.

During the gathering on February 23, Mahama criticised the NPP campaign team for attacking his proposal, pointing out that the NPP’s response indicates a sense of panic.

Key members of NPP have expressed concerns about the lack of clarity in the 24-hour economy proposal, with some arguing that it is already operational.

Mahama, undeterred by the criticisms, asserted, “The widespread acceptance of the 24-hour policy appears to have sent the NPP campaign into a tailspin, leading to a frantic effort to attack it through calumny and disinformation in the last few days.”

He further highlighted his commitment to reducing the size of the government if elected, noting that his opponent, Vice President Bawumia, made similar promises in response.

Mahama emphasised his dedication to delivering on his promises and criticised the NPP flagbearer for attempting to distance himself from the economic challenges.

Mahama contrasted his performance as Vice President with the current vice president, Dr. Bawumia, stressing his record of taking responsibility.

He argued, “Not only do I have a much better and measurable performance record in both my role as Vice President and Head of the Economic Management Team, and later as President, than my leading contender in this year’s elections, I also have a record of taking responsibility. The same cannot be said of my opponent.”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by H.E. John Dramani Mahama, in collaboration with the party’s leadership and the NDC Social Democracy LAB, a policy think tank, is set to host a National Policy Dialogue.

This event aims to discuss and deliberate on the NDC’s policy priorities for the upcoming 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections in Ghana.

Mahama messed up big time because he never expected to be President – Asamoah Boateng

Minister of Chieftaincy Affairs, Stephen Asamoah Boateng, has asserted that former president John Dramani Mahama failed during his tenure as President because the position was served to him on a silver platter.

Speaking during an engagement with the people of Damongo on February 17, 2024; Asamoah Boateng, affectionately called Asabee, stated that Mr Mahama could not serve Ghanaians then when he had the chance and does not deserve to be given another chance.

“He never expected to be president. Somehow it was thrown at him and he messed up. And he messed up big time. Now, I don’t know what he is coming back to do,” Boateng, popularly referred to as Asa Bee stressed.

“But his brother Bawumia from the north has leapfrogged him already. Bawumia is looking forward not backwards,” he added before alleging wrongly that Mahama, a year on from his election as 2024 flagbearer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said nothing by way of policy directions.

“After being nominated in just two months, Bawumia has come up with policy directions and the way to get the economy to the higher level,” Asa Bee stated in reference to the vice president’s February 7 lecture.

He underscored the fact that Bawumia knew how to build the economy and the he represents the future of the country.

“So, let’s go out of this room and all of us, do hard work. It is not going to be easy but I know we will win, we will beat the NDC to pulp,” he stressed.

The main challenger to Bawumia in the 2024 election is John Dramani Mahama, who is seeking his final term in office on his fourth consecutive run for the presidency.

He won his first shot in 2012 but lost the second and third attempts to Akufo-Addo in 2016 and 2020 respectively.

The John Mahama versus Mahamudu Bawumia contest will be the first time in the Fourth Republic that both major contenders for the presidency will be from the northern part of the country.

While Mahama is gunning for his final term in office, Bawumia wants to go a step further after serving for two terms as Vice President, he is in his final year in the role.

NDC’s 24-hour economy promise lacks credibility – Jinapor

The Member of Parliament for Damongo Constituency and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has criticized the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, for their 24-hour economy policy, dismissing it as nothing more than a slogan.

Mr Jinapor asserted that during the NDC and Mahama’s four-year tenure in managing the economy, the country experienced dumsor, failing even to achieve a 12-hour economy.

He argued that this historical performance demonstrates the NDC’s inability to fulfill their promise of a 24-hour economy.

Speaking at a ceremony in Damongo, where he was acclaimed as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Damongo Constituency on Saturday, February 17, 2024, Jinapor contended that the NDC has not effectively communicated the concept of the 24-hour economy to the ordinary Ghanaian.

He emphasized the NDC’s track record marked by dumsor during their time in government.

Where is the funding Mahama promised to secure a theatre in Kumasi – Socrates Safo quizzes

Ghanaian filmmaker and Director for Creative Arts at the National Commission, Socrates Safo, has voiced strong criticism against former president John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of failing to fulfil promises made during his tenure.

Safo specifically highlighted Mahama’s commitment to build a theatre in Kumasi after securing funding from Exim bank, which ultimately remained unfulfilled.

Safo expressed his disappointment, asserting, “I will not follow somebody who promised to do something and he will not do it.”

He recounted Mahama’s pledge in 2013 to construct a theatre in Kumasi with funding from Turkish Exim Bank, emphasising that despite waiting patiently, nothing materialised.

Drawing a comparative analysis, Safo contrasted the performance of the Mahama administration with that of the Akufo-Addo led government, asserting that the latter successfully delivered on their promises.

He urged Ghanaians to prioritise tangible proof when evaluating political statements, citing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for making empty promises while commending the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their commitment to fulfilling pledges.

Safo concluded by advocating for support towards those who have demonstrated a track record of action, emphasising, “NPP came and they promised to build theatres, and they pursued it and secured funding and everything, and I can see they are doing it. NDC promised; we didn’t see anything, but NPP is delivering on the promise. If I am to put my weight, I will put my weight on the person who has done something.”

It will be recalled that John Dramani Mahama promised to build a second theatre in Kumasi after having successfully secured funds from the Turkish Exim Bank.

However, it is not known whether John Mahama started the project or did not commence it at all.

The former president is yet to respond to Socrate Safo’s claims.

Stop behaving as if you’ve won the election – Kabila to Mahama

The former General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), James Kwabena Bomfreh Jr., known popularly as Kabila, has taken a swipe at former president John Dramani Mahama.

Kabila accused Mahama of prematurely declaring himself as the winner in the upcoming 2024 general elections and urged him to exercise caution in his statements.

Emphasising the need for measured statements, Kabila questions Mahama’s behaviour, suggesting that declaring oneself the winner while actively contesting raises confusion.

“I want to say this as a fourth point to caution the former president. I don’t know who has deceived him that he has won the elections; this is not the first time, as if you have won the elections, then why is he contesting? If you have been declared the 2024 general elections winner, then why are you contesting?” Kabila stated.

He highlights the importance of Mahama not underestimating the government in power, cautioning the National Democratic Congress (NDC) against complacency, especially as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is expected to pose a formidable challenge.

Kabila further advised Mahama not to assume a fixed election date, hinting at potential changes by the Electoral Commission to accommodate all eligible voters.

In a petition to the Electoral Commission (EC), the church expressed worry that its members might be disenfranchised due to the date since it falls on a Saturday, a day dedicated to the worship of God.

In addition to urging a change in the date, the church is calling for legislation to ensure that future elections in the country do not occur on religiously significant days.

The former CPP General Secretary’s words serve as a reminder to the NDC to remain vigilant and focused amid the evolving electoral landscape.

Labour demands: Unlike NPP, I can’t can’t make empty promises considering the difficult economic challenges

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama emphasized his commitment to avoiding empty promises in his campaign, distinguishing himself from the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) approach to securing power.

Citing the challenging state of Ghana’s economy, Mahama expressed reluctance to make unrealistic commitments, asserting, “I don’t want to be like those dishonest people who came and promised you heaven.”

Addressing the concerns of pre-tertiary teachers in Tamale, Mahama acknowledged the economic difficulties they face.

“The economy is in a big mess and so I cannot promise everybody that we are going to increase your salaries and all that.

“I don’t want to be like those dishonest people who came and promised you heaven and said they would build factories in every district, they would build dams in every village, they would give every constituency one million dollars a year, I’m not that kind of person,” he explained.

Although he refrained from promising salary increments, he highlighted the critical issue of inadequate accommodation for teachers in rural communities.

“But we have suggested a solution for all this, we will help you with accommodation in some of the schools, so that more teachers can stay in school.”

Mahama pledged that, if elected, his government would prioritize providing suitable housing for teachers posted to such areas, aiming to alleviate the challenges they currently encounter.

Mahama further noted the reluctance of many teachers to accept postings in rural communities due to the lack of accommodation, resulting in substantial expenditures on daily commutes.

He stressed the importance of stakeholders understanding the country’s economic reality and pledged to promote transparency if he assumes power.

By doing so, Mahama aims to discourage unrealistic demands and foster a pragmatic approach to addressing Ghana’s challenges.

In a notable flashback to 2012, former President John Dramani Mahama, invoked the metaphor of a “spare driver” in the journey of national leadership, signaling his readiness to transition into the role of the “substantive driver.”

Delivering his closing remarks during a stimulating IEA Presidential Debate, Mr Mahama, who had ascended to the presidency from the Vice President position following the demise of late President John Evans Atta Mills, appealed to Ghanaians to elevate him from the role of a “spare driver” to that of the main driver, signaling his readiness to assume leadership.

He passionately appealed to Ghanaians to renew his mandate, evoking the legacy of his predecessor, the late President John Mills.

Reflecting on the achievements of the NDC government over the past four years, Mr Mahama underscored the importance of continuity, stating, “The NDC government has done a lot in four years. Our constitution gives presidents two terms. Take it that I am the spare driver or care taker.

“Prof Mills of blessed memory started the process and I am finishing his unexpired term. I believe the NDC government deserves a second term to be able to build on the foundation that it has laid in these four years. I am certain that Ghanaians will vote for me and turn me from the spare driver that I have been described as into the actual driver leading us to the destination we want to go to,” President John John Mahama said in his closing remarks to a stimulating IEA Presidential Debate held in Accra.

Fast forward to the present day, a similar appeal emerged from the February 7 address of Dr. Bawumia, the current Vice President, who called upon Ghanaians to move him from the position of a “mate” to that of the main driver.

Dr Bawumia’s recent invocation of the “driver-mate” analogy to galvanize public support bears a striking resemblance to a past appeal made by former President John Dramani Mahama.

Former President Mahama unveils 60 policies to transform Ghana – NDC says

National Democratic Congress (NDC) has revealed that former President John Dramani Mahama has outlined a comprehensive set of 60 policies aimed at achieving his vision for Ghana if he is elected president in January 2025.

These policies were unveiled during Mahama’s nationwide campaign tour dubbed “Building the Ghana, We Want” campaign, where he visited various constituencies and regions across the country.

Mahama, who is the flagbearer of the NDC, has taken his campaign to several regions, including the Eastern, Ashanti, Western, Upper East, Northern, and Bono Regions.

Some of the key policies outlined by Mahama include the implementation of a 24-hour economy strategy to maximize productivity and efficiency, stop the economic decline, reform the Bank of Ghana, and prioritize local participation in various sectors to generate more jobs for the youth.

Additionally, Mahama plans to actively attract private sector investors to partner with the government in productive sectors for job creation, set standardized borrowing limits to prevent excessive debt accumulation, complete abandoned projects, establish a Governance Advisory Council to improve political governance, and run a lean and efficient government by appointing not more than 60 ministers and deputy ministers.

Furthermore, Mahama aims to abolish the payment of ex-gratia and cut out waste and ostentation in government expenditure.

The unveiling of these policies underscores Mahama’s commitment to addressing critical issues facing the country and charting a path towards sustainable development and inclusive growth.

In a statement, the NDC emphasized Mahama’s track record and leadership qualities, expressing confidence in his ability to steer the country towards prosperity if given the opportunity to serve as president once again.

With the 2024 elections drawing closer, Mahama’s policy proposals are expected to generate discussions and debates among political stakeholders and the general public as the country prepares to make a crucial decision on its future leadership.

  • Why can’t you show us love like we did for you despite your adulterous ways? – Angel Maxine to Mahama

Why can’t you show us love like we did for you despite your adulterous ways? – Angel Maxine to Mahama

Controversial LGBTQ+ rights activist and transgender musician, Angel Maxine, has posed a thought-provoking question to the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama.

Angel Maxine’s inquiry revolves around the principles of love and compassion within religious beliefs, particularly concerning allegations of moral transgressions and the LGBTQ+ community.

This comes in response to Mahama’s recent declaration aligning his personal faith with his opposition to LGBTQ+ activities.

Mahama stated, “I am against LGBTQ. I am a member of the Assemblies of God Church, and my faith is against it.”

However, Angel Maxine, using her platform on Instagram, has drawn attention to Mahama’s own experience in 2020 when he faced an alleged adulterous scandal, earning him the colloquial label ‘papanu.’

“You said your faith is  Ghana governed by religion because that is what everybody is riding on. In case you have forgotten what your religion preaches about… Your religion preaches about love, compassion, that is why in 2020 when your adulterous scandal came out that earned you the name ‘papano’ , your religion protected you.

“Your religion showed you love even though adultery is a sin in the bible. So, if your religion can show you love, show you compassion for being an adulturous man that is a sin in the bible. Why can’t your religion  show love to the LGBQT community,” Angel Maxine.

Despite the moral transgression, Maxine pointed out that Mahama was shielded and shown love within his religious community.

Maxine is recognized for her advocacy against the passage of the LGBTQ+ community Bill, which proposes the criminalization of same-sex relationships.

The anti-LGBT bill, which has been widely criticised by human rights groups and foreign governments, is currently being debated in parliament.

The Bill extends its reach to encompass relationships between a person and an animal or object, suggesting imprisonment terms ranging from 3 to 5 years.

  • You can’t evade accountability – Mahama replies Bawumia over Feb 7 address

You can’t evade accountability – Mahama replies Bawumia over Feb 7 address

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has asserted that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia cannot evade responsibility for the deteriorating economic situation in Ghana.

The former President emphasized that members of the Akufo-Addo government must not distance themselves from the country’s current economic challenges.

Speaking at a town hall meeting in Tamale, located in the Northern Region, on Thursday, Mahama criticized the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) for what he described as plunging the nation into economic turmoil. He underscored the importance of holding accountable all individuals involved in decision-making within the government.

“Now, all those who contributed to the mess are attempting to distance themselves as if they were not involved. People have started claiming they were not in charge and that their voices weren’t heard, but they all played a part in the crisis, and none of them can evade responsibility. They all participated in cabinet meetings and collectively made decisions,” stated Mahama.

The former President rejected any attempts by members of the government to absolve themselves of blame, asserting that all individuals, including Vice President Bawumia, were complicit in the country’s economic challenges.

“All of them ‘dey inside’, Jack Toronto and all his brothers, all of them are part of the mess we are going through. None of them can escape responsibility,” Mahama emphasized.

Mahama’s remarks come amid growing concerns over Ghana’s economic performance, including rising inflation, currency depreciation, and mounting public debt. The NDC flagbearer’s comments serve as a rallying call for accountability and transparency in governance, urging citizens to hold leaders accountable for their actions and decisions.

As Ghana approaches the upcoming presidential elections, the debate over economic management and accountability is likely to remain a focal point of political discourse. Mahama’s critique of the government’s economic policies underscores the need for comprehensive solutions to address the country’s economic challenges and restore stability and prosperity for all citizens.

  • Mahama comes no where close to Bawumia – Joe Wise

Mahama comes no where close to Bawumia – Joe Wise

The Member of Parliament for the Bekwai constituency in the Ashanti Region under the New Patriotic Party, Joe Osei-Owusu, has asserted that the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, would consistently outshine the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) flagbearer for the 2024 election, John Dramani Mahama, in any direct comparison.

The NDC has consistently targeted the Vice President, criticizing him for the economic challenges in Ghana, alleging that he presented himself as an economic savior during his time in opposition and directed numerous jabs at the NDC and its leader.

The NDC specifically highlighted the escalating public debt, struggles of the Ghanaian cedi against major international currencies, and high inflation as indicators of the Vice President’s perceived incompetence.

They argued that his harsh criticism of similar issues during his opposition days has exposed his inadequacy.

In his role as the head of the government’s economic management team, the Vice President has not been exempt from blame for the failures of the NPP government.

However, speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, November 13, the First Deputy Speaker expressed confidence that Dr. Bawumia stands a brighter chance against the former President.

“Let’s not create the impression that the current government hasn’t done anything positive. I don’t subscribe to that. There have been shortcomings and difficulties on different fronts, it’s a fact, and that’s a reality that we face. And he [Bawumia] as a Vice President, would have to carry some of that.”

Responding to the host’s query about Dr. Bawumia’s chances in the 2024 polls, he stated, “Very bright.”

He emphasized that although some people may vote based on party and its symbol, an evaluation considering their independent roles in the past would favor Dr. Bawumia when placed against Mahama.

The assessment would consider their past actions, ideas, implementation efforts, and their quality of person and integrity.

In a recent interview on Joy, former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong downplayed attempts to attribute the challenges of the incumbent NPP administration largely to the Vice President and now flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mr Agyapong suggested that comparing Bawumia, who has not been a President, to John Mahama, who has served as both Vice President and President, would not be fair.

He stressed that the Vice President does not bear ultimate responsibility, and there have been areas where the government can be proud and others that need improvement.

Mr Agyapong emphasized that Dr. Bawumia’s ability to implement a transformative vision would be the key differentiator.

  • You should aim at living behind a legacy rather than making money – Yaa-Na tells Mahama

You should aim at living behind a legacy rather than making money – Yaa-Na tells Mahama

The Overlord of Dagbon, Yaa-Na Abubakari II, has offered advice to National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, cautioning him to focus on leaving a legacy rather than personal gain in his pursuit of another term in office.

During a courtesy call at the Gbewa palace in Yendi as part of his ‘Building the Nation tour,’ Mahama received counsel from the Yaa-Na, who emphasized the importance of a presidency aimed at creating a lasting impact for future generations.

“I believe you are not coming to make more money for your family but to leave a legacy that your children will not only be proud of, but will pave the way for them wherever they may find themselves in the future when you are long gone to your maker.

The Overlord also encouraged Mahama to view his opponent, Dr. Mahamudu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), as a brother rather than an enemy, emphasising that political differences should enrich opportunities for the nation.

“Being on the opposite sides of the political divide does not make you enemies. It rather enriches the opportunities of the family,” he told Mahama.

Additionally, Yaa-Na Abubakari II urged Mahama to be bold in reshuffling his team based on merit and competence, even if it means parting ways with loyalists who may not contribute positively to the government.

“In seeking to make this legacy a reality, when you get the nod from Ghanaians, do not shy away from reshuffling your team to get the right ones on board by merit and competence, and lay off even loyalists but misfits, who will only churn out mediocrity for your government.

This applies especially to your kitchen cabinet, because they in reality rule you and the country. That would be a mistake; no Ghanaian will forgive you, if you happen to be the chosen one,” Yaa-Na said.

Addressing the water crisis in Yendi, Mahama promised to prioritise the establishment of a water supply system for the region, expressing disappointment over the stalled Yendi water project initiated during his previous term.

He assured the Overlord that if elected, his government would address the long-standing issue and ensure the people of Yendi have access to a reliable water supply.

The water supply project, initiated in 2020 by President Akufo-Addo, aimed to provide 15,000 cubic meters of water daily to Yendi and its environs.

Mahama pledged that the NDC government would make the Yendi water supply project a priority if voted into power in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

  • Yendi will not be thirsty again if I become president – Mahama promises chief

Yendi will not be thirsty again if I become president – Mahama promises chief

Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to prioritize infrastructure development in Yendi if elected president, promising the community will see significant improvements under his leadership.

During a meeting with the Chief of Yendi, Mahama assured the community that it would not “be thirty again” under his presidency, referencing the lack of progress and development faced by the town since he left office.

“…with all the work that we did in terms of the Yendi water supply project, eight years after we left office, Yendi still has no water. I want to assure you, if your son becomes President, you will not be thirsty anymore,” he told the Chief.

He further noted that; “The Yendi Water Project would be a priority for the new NDC government”.

The NDC flagbearer also promised to resolve the current insecurity in Dagbon, which has led to the area seeing a lot of armed robberies, when the NDC comes to power in 2025.

“We would make sure that we would get rid of the armed robbers who are persecuting you. So that our people can live in peace and travel to do their work without fears that they will be harmed or killed,” he said.

Mahama also promised that the next NDC government would ensure that the Eastern Corridor Roads project, which has stalled under the current government, would be completed so the people of Yendi would no longer have to pass through Tamale when traveling to the southern part of Ghana.

I will invest in local players to put Black Stars in better shape – Mahama

The National Democratic Congress’ 2024 flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has declared that the new Black Stars will prioritize home-grown players.

This announcement was made during his “Building The Ghana We Want Tour” in the Northern Region as part of his presidential campaign.

Mahama aims to replace the outgoing Ghanaian President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In recent years, the Black Stars’ performance has been disappointing, culminating in a first-round exit from the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire.

Ghana’s inability to secure a win in three matches led to their elimination at the group stage for the second consecutive edition of the AFCON.

Speaking to a gathered audience, the NDC presidential candidate outlined his commitment to shaping the Black Stars under his leadership by focusing on home-grown talents who have excelled within the revitalized Ghanaian football structure.

“We will build the new Black Stars based on homegrown players. Domestic players who have trained together for a long time and work as a team, and then we will bring in the foreign ones to blend with them.”

“The core of the Black Stars must be made up of domestic players who have played together for a long time… We are going to overhaul Ghana football in collaboration with the Ghana Football Association.”

Builsa South MP anticipates Mahama restores original name of Jubilee House

Former President John Dramani Mahama has received calls to change the name of the seat of government from the current “Jubilee House” back to its original “Flagstaff House.”

This request follows his announcement to restore the original names of public universities previously renamed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

In welcoming Mr Mahama’s decision to restore the original names, Builsa South Member of Parliament, Dr Clement Apaak, said: “Seated behind him [JM] during his interaction with stakeholders in the Zuarungu Constituency, I leapt with joy when he announced that he would restore the original names of the universities renamed by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.”

“I have no doubt that Operation Restoration will include the seat of government. Flagstaff House it was, and so would it be again. Our history will definitely be restored,” he wrote on his X platform.

Mahama emphasized that the current names would be assigned to significant infrastructure within the universities.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer asserted that every public university was initiated and built by the NDC, highlighting the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) practice of renaming these institutions.

“We are known as nation builders because of the number of schools we have built. Every public university was initiated and built by us. All the NPP knows how to do is name universities that people have built.

“After NDC builds a university, then they will give it the name of one of their heroes or people. We are going to rename the universities. Ghana has many heroes, and not only the heroes of the NPP tradition.

“We can name an administration block, hostel, and library after somebody. But the university must reflect its core mandate. And so we will restore the original names, and the names that they have given them will be given to significant infrastructure in the universities.

“And we will add other people and name the infrastructure in the universities after them. But if the university is the University for Development Studies, that is its core mandate. It will be called the University for Development Studies,” he said while addressing party supporters, chiefs, and students at Zuarungu in the Upper East Region.

Mr. Mahama, in expressing his intention to revert the names of public universities, mentioned that the current names would be allocated to notable infrastructure within the institutions.

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) emphasized that the NDC had initiated and constructed every public university.

It is noteworthy that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo renamed the Wa campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) after Simon Diedong (SD) Dombo, a politician affiliated with the United Party tradition.

  • New EC reforms is unacceptable especially in an election year – Mahama

New EC reforms is unacceptable especially in an election year – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed disapproval of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) plan to change the date of the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.

Mahama emphasized that implementing such a significant electoral reform during an election year could lead to chaos if not handled carefully.

Speaking at a breakfast meeting with clergymen and Christian community leaders in Koforidua, Eastern Region, Mahama questioned the appropriateness of the EC’s actions.

He criticised the timing of proposed changes, including the omission of indelible ink and the shift in the election date, asserting that such surprises erode people’s confidence in the electoral process.

“What the EC does sometimes does not sound right. Since we voted in 2020 and now it’s left with just nine months to this year’s general elections, you are now coming up with major changes, saying they will not introduce indelible ink and all that.

“If you do that you don’t build the confidence of the people in the electoral process. They are also saying they want to shift the election date and bring a new C.I. to change the old C.I. What we’re saying is that, why wait till now? You don’t spring surprises on people like that,” the NDC leader asserted.

The EC had earlier disclosed that approximately 60% of political parties supported its proposal to conduct the elections in November.

However, Mahama, along with the NDC and some political parties, rejected the idea, citing concerns about the limited time for the EC to organise a peaceful and successful poll.

Deputy Chairman of the EC in charge of Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, acknowledged the majority support for the 2028 timeline among political parties but revealed that about 60% were open to the possibility of implementing the changes in 2024, provided it can be legally accomplished.

“So in principle, all the parties that attended IPAC yesterday were for it for 2028. But for 2024, almost 60% of the parties, more than half of the parties, said if it will be possible for the EC to go through the legal processes to have it implemented this year, let’s go ahead,” Dr. Asare indicated in an interview.

Dr. Asare assured that the EC is confident in meeting all legal requirements to hold the elections in November.

“Looking at our calendar, we are pretty sure that we will be able to do everything, whatever it takes to ensure that we go through the legal process.

“But as I said, as far as we are concerned, whatever we need to do, whatever is necessary, whatever is proper that must be done to ensure that we are able to consummate it and have the elections, we are well able to do that,” Dr. Asare noted.

The NDC’s Director of Elections and ICT, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, said the EC must proceed with caution.

He said that the overwhelming agreement was that, given everything the EC has to do between now and the next presidential and parliamentary elections, it would be taking on more than it could do.

“As an institution, if it wanted to add the needed parliamentary processes to change the date for the elections, it’s something that we all discussed, and we are all men and women of faith,” he said.

Why is Mahama always engaging in politics of name calling? – Popular serial caller quizzes

Former President John Dramani Mahama has found himself under scrutiny for what some describe as a recurrent engagement in the politics of name-calling.

A prominent serial caller, Sir Obama-Pokuase, well-known for actively participating in public discourse, has raised pertinent questions regarding Mahama’s communication strategy.

Sir Obama, who has gained popularity for his insightful analyses and critiques, has recently taken Mahama to task for what he perceives as a consistent pattern of employing derogatory language in political interactions.

In a tweet, Sir Obama questioned the rationale behind what he described as a persistent engagement in politics of name calling by Mr Mahama.

“Why is Mahama always engaging in politics of name-calling?” he asked.

Giving instances to buttress his claim, he noted that: “Last week, in Kumasi, he referred to President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia as “Jack Toronto and his kid brother,” emphasising that, “this is not the first time he’s doing that.

“In the lead up to 2016 elections, he used to reference then candidate Akufo-Addo as “Opana”, meanwhile, Nana, on all political platforms refer to him as “Yɛnwura Mahama”, to wit, “Our Dearest Mahama.” It is about time he stopped the petty jokes! 2024 elections is going to be about policies and track records, not name-calling,” he stated.

He changed Ashanti Region – Breman Chief endorses Mahama

Chief of Breman in the Ashanti Region, Baffuor Kotei Kutin Sraman, has reiterated his support for former President John Dramani Mahama ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

In a issued on Friday, January 26, 2024, the traditional leader said he had been backing Mr Mahama since 2016, despite being criticized by some people.

He said he was confident that Mr Mahama could deliver development to the country, especially the Ashanti Region, which he claimed had benefited immensely from his previous administration.

“I said this in 2016. I was chastised. But because time changes, we are here again. Today is Friday the 26th of January 2024, today I am saying our prayers are behind his excellency John Dramani Mahama, so that God can help him reclaim his seat as president. I am not saying it for granted because I know what he can do. During his tenure, he changed the Ashanti Region. Talk of hospitals, schools, roads, he did a lot of things for our development. Ideally, when someone does a good thing, it has to be continued, but it looks like things are not exactly going well. So this is our plea, that God almighty will help so that this man can come back and lead this country into development,” he said.

Baffuor Kotei Kutin Sraman is one of the few chiefs in the Ashanti Region who have openly endorsed Mr Mahama, who is the presidential candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The region is considered a stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), which has won the majority of the parliamentary seats and the presidential votes in every election since 1992.

However, Mr Mahama has been making efforts to woo the voters in the region, promising to complete all the abandoned projects initiated by his government, such as the Kejetia market, the Kumasi airport expansion, and the Kumasi ring road.

He has also highlighted some of his achievements in the region, such as the construction of hospitals, schools, water projects, and roads.

Mr Mahama is expected to face Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who is the presidential candidate of the NPP, in the 2024 election.

  • I will prioritize stalled development projects in the Ashanti Region when I regain power – Mahama

I will prioritize stalled development projects in the Ashanti Region when I regain power – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged that the next National Democratic Congress (NDC) government will prioritize completing stalled development projects in the Ashanti region.

During his ‘Building Ghana Tour,’ President Mahama emphasized the importance of finishing ongoing projects before initiating new ones to optimize the allocation of scarce resources in the country.

Expressing dismay over the abandonment of NDC-initiated projects in the Ashanti Region by the NPP, Mahama cited examples such as the industrial hub at Adansi Fomena and the Obuasi Deeps Decline (ODD) projects.

These projects, initiated between 2014 and 2016, were left incomplete when the NDC left office, and he highlighted the New Patriotic Party’s claim of credit for the benefits of the Obuasi Deeps Decline (ODD) projects today.

Additionally, Mahama asserted that the Obuasi Campus of Kwame Nkrumah University Science and Technology (KNUST) and the Obuasi bus terminal were direct initiatives of the NDC Government.

He assured the traditional council that mining profits would be utilised judiciously for the development of the Adansi community if he was re-elected.

Addressing concerns at the New-Edubiase Chief’s palace, Mahama outlined achievements by the previous NDC government, including the district hospital, Fumso schools, Obuasi schools, stadium, and Obuasi town roads.

He pledged to continue such developmental efforts if voted back into power.

During the tour, Opagyakotwere Bonsra Afriyie II, paramount Chief of Adansi-Fomena, urged Mahama to consider reviewing the 1992 Constitution, pointing out problematic provisions.

In a similar vein, Nana Oduro Panin Bikorang II, Chief of New-Edubiase, advised Mahama to address those responsible for illegal mining activities that harm water bodies and forest vegetation.

  • I’m totally disgusted! – Mahama fumes as he accuses BoG of illegally printing billions of cedis

I’m totally disgusted! – Mahama fumes as he accuses BoG of illegally printing billions of cedis

Former President John Dramani Mahama has called upon the minority caucus to closely scrutinize the activities of the Bank of Ghana concerning the recent release of the second tranche amounting to $600 million by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

This disbursement follows the successful completion of the first review of the $3-billion three-year extended credit facility, approved by the Bretton Woods institution in May 2023.

In his appeal to the minority caucus for prudent utilization of the IMF funds by the government, Mr Mahama didn’t mince words as he criticized the Bank of Ghana, alleging that it has worsened Ghana’s economic challenges by introducing a surplus of newly-printed banknotes into the financial system.

While emphasizing the need for the government to exercise responsibility in handling the recently acquired IMF funds, Mahama directed a pointed critique at the central bank.

According to him, the alleged flooding of the system with freshly minted currency by the Bank of Ghana has contributed to the exacerbation of the economic difficulties faced by the nation.

Mr Mahama said “under normal circumstances, the release of $600 million by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to the government of Ghana should provide relief to the already-overburdened and suffering Ghanaian.”

“It is, however, evident that Ghanaians will continue to suffer as long as Akufo-Addo, Bawumia and the NPP remain in office”, he posted on Facebook.

Mr Mahama urged “the outgoing NPP government to be cautious, responsible and judicious in utilising the IMF $600 million and other funds that may be made available to Ghana from the World Bank and other development partners”.

The former President declared that his party will closely monitor the government’s handling of the recently acquired funds.

“I have already encouraged the NDC minority in parliament to ensure strict oversight on both the government and not to take their eyes off the Bank of Ghana that illegally printed billions of cedis and aggravated our economic situation”.

“On my part, I will, from time to time, continue to engage the Ghanaian public about my vision to build the Ghana we want and how we will work together to create well-paying jobs through my 24-hour economy policy and other pragmatic initiatives”.

Last year, the Cassiel Ato Forson-led minority caucus marched in demand for the resignation of the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison as well as his two deputies.

“The purpose of this protest is to express our revulsion at the illegal printing of money (about GHS80 billion) between 2021 and 2022 by the BoG for the corrupt Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government which led to a hyperinflation rate of 54.1 per cent in December 2022”, Dr Ato Forson said in a statement at the time.

The caucus claimed GHC22.04bn of that amount was used by the BoG to support the government’s budget without parliamentary approval.

“This singular act of BoG”, he emphasised, “has negatively impacted livelihoods and businesses and pushed about 850,000 Ghanaians into poverty in the year 2022 alone”.

The caucus said as representatives of the people, it was “totally disgusted by the crass mismanagement and reckless mishandling of the affairs of the Bank of Ghana, which resulted in a gargantuan loss of GHS60.8 billion and a negative equity of GHS55.1 in 2022 with its attendant hardships on Ghanaians”.

The Bank of Ghana, however, denied the allegations.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 26 July 2022, the central bank said Dr Forson’s claim could not be farther from the truth.

The bank observed that Dr Forson’s reaction was in response to the 2022 mid-year fiscal policy review which was presented to parliament by the Minister of Finance on Monday, 25 July 2022.

It explained: “In Appendix 2A of the Mid-Year Fiscal Policy Review document, under Financing, out of the total financing of GHC28.12 billion, an amount of GHC22.04 billion was captured under BoG”, adding: “This is the amount being referred to by the Ranking Member as BoG’s printing of currency to support the budget”.

Concerning the loss and negative equity posted by the central bank, Governor Addison later explained at a press conference that it was important for Ghanaians to appreciate that the GHS60.8 billion loss recorded by the nank in 2022 “were technical losses arising from the haircut and the application of accounting standards (in particular, IFRS 9) to estimate expected credit losses over the tenor of the Government debt held by Bank of Ghana”.

He told journalists on Monday, 21 August 2023: “It is not money lost by the Bank of Ghana through its operations in 2022”.

Rather, he said “one should look at this as a reflection of the total cost of the economic and social crisis the country faced over the years and an attempt to resolve a major structural problem of the Ghanaian economy.”

Also, Dr Addison said this is not the first time the central bank has recorded negative equity.

“I must also add that, if one takes time to go through historical financial statements of the Bank of Ghana, you will realise that this is not the first time that the Bank has gone into negative equity”, he stated.

He reported: “During the early years of structural adjustment, very large exchange rate depreciations led to revaluation lossesthat drove the Bank into negative equity”.

Indeed, Dr Addison mentioned, “anytime the economy faces major challenges, the Bank of Ghana balance sheet suffers, and the equity position moves into negative territories”.

“You will recall that in 2017 and 2018, the Bank of Ghana incurred similar negative equity from the impairment of legacy liquidity support loans granted in 2015 and 2016 to insolvent banks, which our external auditors impaired due to the doubtful prospects of recovering from those insolvent banks”.

“The Bank of Ghana, however, recovered and generated profits throughout the period 2019 to 2021”, he pointed out.

“It is worth noting that Central Banks are not commercial banks”, he highlighted, stressing: “Bank of Ghana’s current financial condition will not impact negatively on the operations of the Bank”.

He said the IMF Technical Assistance mission validated this conclusion before the necessary decisions were taken.

“In their opinion, the Bank of Ghana was policy solvent and would remain so, as it had enough income to cover monetary policy operational costs”, Dr Addison said.

The Bank of Ghana, he indicated, “had sufficient capital amounting to about 15 per cent of its total liabilities”, noting: “Its recommendation was for the Bank to retain all profits and a reassessment should be made in the year 2027”.

“The Bank will also manage to reduce its operational costs during this period”, he promised.

In all these, Dr Addison said the Bank of Ghana has “acted within the applicable laws”. He also denied claims that the central bank has been bankrolling the government annually.

“It is not true that Bank of Ghana has been providing financing for the Government every year. There has been zero-financing in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021. The Bank of Ghana has only had to support in the pandemic year of 2020 and the crisis year of 2022. The Bank of Ghana Act (612), as amended, limits financing of Government to 5 per cent of previous year’s tax revenue”, Dr Addison reiterated.

“This provision in the law has been adhered to since I took office in April 2017. Between 2017 and 2019, in addition to the requirements of the Bank of Ghana Act (612), as amended, the Bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Finance to even impose a tighter restriction of zero-central bank-financing, and this was observed strictly, even though MOUs are not legally binding. Between 2012 and 2015, the Bank of Ghana provided overdraft to finance government and COCOBOD every year. And there was neither a pandemic nor a global economic crisis”.

“When Ghana was hit with the COVID-19 in 2020, Section 30(6) of the Bank of Ghana Act (612), as amended, was triggered, and as indicated earlier, the Bank purchased GHC10 billion worth of Covid-19 bonds to support the economy through the pandemic”.

“This was done within the applicable laws governing the Bank of Ghana. When section 30 (6) of the Bank of Ghana Act (612), as amended, is triggered, it, allows the Governor, the Minister for Finance and the Controller and Accountant General to agree on a new limit of central bank financing”.

“The law further says that the Minister of Finance will then have to inform parliament and the Minister has since informed parliament as part of his briefing to update Parliament on the IMF programme and status of the Domestic Debt Exchange”.

I never accused Mahama of having family and friends gov’t – Gabby Otchere Darko

In a recent development, Gabby Otchere Darko, a prominent political figure of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has clarified his position on accusations related to the then former President John Dramani Mahama‘s administration.

Contrary to previous reports, Otchere Darko has explicitly asserted that he never accused Mahama of running a “family and friends” administration.

The clarification comes after various media outlets reported on statements attributed to Otchere Darko, suggesting that he had criticized the former president for allegedly appointing close relatives and friends to key positions during his tenure.

However, in an exclusive interview on Star FM, Otchere Darko vehemently denied making any such accusations.

“Whoever it is should bring the evidence if I ever said so. I have over 3000 cousins, and I am not going to castigate someone over family and friends. Never, never. It is impossible for people who had no role to play to suddenly emerge, and just because they share a blood relation, they must be appointed,” Otchere Darko asserted.

He went on to highlight how absurd it is to judge people only on the basis of their family relationships, casting doubt on the veracity of any criticism of President Akufo-Addo’s appointments.

“Name me one person in this government(NPP) appointed solely due to a blood relation, not because of their contribution to the party’s victory or their subsequent ability to contribute to the nation. I challenge anyone with information or evidence to the contrary,” Otchere Darko stated.

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko is one of the leading transactional lawyers in the country, with a unique ability to get things done and find solutions, no matter the issue.

Anti-corruption bodies under my tenure will operate independently – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his determination to ensure that officials of the current administration engaged in corrupt practices are held responsible for their actions, should he be re-elected as president.

He emphasized that even within his prospective administration, individuals involved in corruption would not be exempt from accountability.

Addressing the audience at the Volta Regional House of Chiefs on January 17, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer expressed concern about the need for a fair approach to combating corruption, highlighting the potential threat it poses to the nation if not addressed appropriately.

Mahama noted that lip service often replaces genuine efforts in addressing corruption issues, and he criticized the constraints placed on anti-corruption institutions, hindering them from fulfilling their mandates independently.

“If we do not establish fairness in our system in fighting corruption, it will overwhelm this country, A lot of times, lip service is paid to it.

“The anti-corruption institutions are fettered and are not able to dispense their mandate independently and unhindered,” John Mahama said.

He added “We will hold people in this government who have misconducted themselves accountable, but same time as we hold them accountable, people who misconduct themselves in our administration will face the full rigours of the law, the anti-corruption institutions will come after them, and I am not going to interfere in the work of these institutions if they are investigating you.”

“When I got closer to the man after the security left me, he was going for dinner and they had called for prayers for us to break our fast. So, he said,’… let’s go and have dinner together’. This is something if somebody told me that my whole life, I could get such an opportunity I wouldn’t believe,” she said.

  • Dumsor is Mahama’s legacy; it won’t return – Egyapa to doomsday prophets

Dumsor is Mahama’s legacy; it won’t return – Egyapa to doomsday prophets

Deputy Energy Minister, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, has called out naysayers claiming that erratic power outages experienced some years ago, which gained notoriety as ‘dumsor’ has returned.

Rejecting the claims, Mr Egyapa Mercer insisted that ‘dumsor’ is the legacy of former President John Dramani Mahama, and would not return under this administration.

“Dumsor is the legacy of former President John Mahama. It was dead with him and remains buried with him. Dumsor is not back. That’s the assurance I’m giving to every Ghanaian,” he said.

During an interview on Peace FM, he acknowledged that the recent outages were unfortunate, however, claims of the doomsday prophets to the effect that dumsor is back are false.

Recent power outages have raised concerns over the return of ‘dumsor’. Members of the public, including top guns in the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have all raised concerns over the matter.

NDC has questioned the silence of the Akufo Addo government over the return of erratic power supply (Dumsor).

According to key officials of the party, the current administration has supervised the return of the dreaded power outages widely known as Dumsor.

Taking to social media platform X, National Communications Officer of the party Sammy Gyamfi and Aide to the former president Felix Ofposu Kwakye in separate posts quizzed why power in major parts of the capital had been out.

“So why is the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government concealing the fact that we are in Dumsor?

“What are they hiding?” Felix asked.

Sammy Gyamfi also said, “It’s sad how Ghanaians are being plunged into #Dumsor after the problem was sustainably addressed by the visionary Nation Builder, @JDMahama. What’s happening here @MBawumia @NAkufoAddo ?”

Nonetheless, Mr Egyapa Mercer and the current administration maintains their stance that dumsor is not back.

The Chief conveyed his message to the audience during the NDC flagbearer’s tour of the Volta Region.

The traditional leader, who additionally holds the position of Vice President of the National House of Chiefs, recounted that his jurisdiction experienced significant impact due to the Akosombo Dam spillage last year.

The Chiefs also applauded former President John Mahama and his brother Ibrahim Mahama for their assistance in relieving the people during the Akosombo Dam disaster.

Mahama revisits promise on regulating okada business

Former President, John Dramani Mahama, has revisited the issue of utilizing motorcycles for commercial purposes, commonly known as the okada business.

The subject was a significant focal point during the 2020 election campaign, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) pledging to legalize it due to its potential for generating employment.

“The okada thing, if we do win, it is going to be in our manifesto again. We are going to regulate it like it has been done in other countries. The riders are going to be taught methods of safe riding,” Mahama affirmed in an interview with TV3.

He posited that unregulated okada use “comes with risks,” adding: “We’ve just behaved like ostriches and buried our heads in the sand but you can’t stop it.

“It is a source of income for many young people…. If we regulate it we can identify every motorbike and every rider and know who is using it for crime,” he added.

Okada is currently illegal under Ghanaian laws.

Mahama to scrap ‘unfair’ E-levy if elected President

Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has pledged to eliminate the 1% electronic levy if he regains power.

He argues that the tax is unjust and hinders citizens from fully embracing the cashless society that the country has been advocating for.

John Mahama said while speaking at the University of Ghana that “it is inequitable tax, it’s not a fair tax, it prevents people from the uptake of our moving towards a cashless society and so when NDC comes, we will remove that tax. I’ve said it bluntly.”

On providing subsidies on data for students, he indicated that there is no problem with the government providing subsidies.

According to John Dramani Mahama, educational institutions should have wifi hotspots in some areas of their campuses so that they can access the internet with ease and that will help in their academics.

“I don’t see anything wrong with the government subsidizing access to wifi for public institutions like the University of Ghana and other educational institutions. There should be hotspots where you can go and stand and do data and then go back and relax.”

Member of Parliament for Builsa South, Clement Apaak, has alleged that there is growing aversion among government appointees of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) following former President John Dramani Mahama’s call for a review of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

Public Sector workers without Ghana Card to face delisting on March 5

The Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD) has declared an uncompromising measure, revealing plans to delist public sector workers who do not possess Ghana Card numbers.

This stern action includes the freezing of salaries for affected individuals, with the implementation set to commence on March 5, 2024. The announcement marks a significant step towards reinforcing the importance of Ghana Card compliance within the public sector.

He made these remarks during an event in Accra where the linking of NIA data to the CAGD payroll was officially announced.

Controller and Accountant-General Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompen stated that this initiative aims to eradicate phantom entries from the government’s payroll.

“With the effect of March 24, this year, all employees without Ghana Card face the risk of being not paid on the government payroll,” Mr Kwaning-Bosompen explained.

On the back of this, the CAGD boss urged staff and members to register for their Ghana Cards at any of the NIA offices nationwide.

He also clarified that the new modality “is just there to enhance all these controls and make it possible for us to have a credible database.”

For him, this “linkage between the national payroll and NIA database has not come to replace existing payroll controls and protocols.”

National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, widely known as Nana B, has addressed a suggestion urging the NPP to commence preparations for their transition documents in anticipation of the 2024 general elections.

The remark was issued by Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, who holds the position of National Chairman within the primary opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

During an interview on Peace FM on January 9, 2023, he shared the perspective that Ghanaians have already grown disillusioned with the NDC’s candidate, former president John Dramani Mahama. Consequently, he urged the party to abstain from disseminating misinformation among their supporters.

“NDC has been playing games all along. Yesterday, Asiedu Nketiah addressed the press conference, the same person who claimed NDC won the 2020 election and vowed to go to court. However, he was also the witness who testified, not realizing that their collated results were baseless,” he said.

He continued “NDC will lose this election, and they should be careful not to go and lie to their supporters as they have been doing always because nobody is going to rig any election.”

Highlighting the perceived unpopularity of the NDC’s presidential candidate, Nana B suggested that Ghanaians have grown weary of John Dramani Mahama.

“Ghanaians already know their presidential candidate, and they are no longer interested in him. His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will become the president of this country,” he added.

Mahama, expressing deep concern, issued a stern caution, urging Akufo-Addo to cease such actions immediately.

“The use of thugs and rogue elements within the security agencies to disrupt elections in some parts of the country as occurred in the 2020 elections, leading to the loss of eight (8) lives, will forever be remembered as Ghana’s day of infamy and an indelible blemish on our democratic credentials established over the last 31 years of constitutional rule,” he said.

Mr Mahama, who is the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), made these allegations in a statement to mark Constitutional Day on Sunday, 7 January 2024.

He further critcised the President for failing to condemn  that: “On a rather sad note, it is unconscionable that three years after these tragic events, our President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has not uttered even a word of sympathy to the bereaved families. Director of Communications at the seat of Ghana’s presidency, Eugene Arhin, has vehemently refuted the allegations made by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, against President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

Mahama had raised concerns about the death of eight individuals during the 2020 elections, prompting a robust denial from Arhin.

The director dismissed the claims as inaccurate and deceptive.

Eugene Arhin criticized the former president for his claim that President Akufo-Addo failed to condemn the deaths linked to the December 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.

In the said video, the president condemned the regrettable deaths resulting from post-electoral violence in Odododiodio and Techiman during the general elections.

“I condemn in no uncertain terms the isolated incidents of post-electoral violence in Odododiodio and Techiman that led to a few regrettable deaths. May their souls rest in peace. We must work to avoid the repetition of such events in the future.

“This statement was made by President Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, 9th December 2020, at his Nima residence, after being declared the winner of the 2020 elections,” the news report quoted the director of communications at the presidency.

“…Former President Mahama’s claims that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has not uttered even a word of sympathy to the bereaved families” is simply not true. He should, therefore, do the needful and congratulate President Akufo-Addo on his victory in 2020, the post by the director of communications at the presidency further read.

In a speech on Sunday, January 7, 2024, Mahama had alleged that President Akufo-Addo failed to address or offer sympathy for the eight lives lost during the election-related disturbances in 2020.

Mahama called on the government to refrain from undermining democratic rights and criticised the use of thugs and rogue elements in disrupting elections.

“I urge the current government to refrain from actions that continue to undermine democratic rights under their administration. The use of thugs and rogue elements within the security agencies to disrupt elections in some parts of the country as occurred in the 2020 elections, leading to the loss of eight (8) lives, will forever be remembered as Ghana’s day of infamy and an indelible blemish on our democratic credentials established over the last 31 years of constitutional rule, Mahama said in his statement.

“On a rather sad note, it is unconscionable that three years after these tragic events, our President, Nana Akufo-Addo, has not uttered even a word of sympathy to the bereaved families. Pointing to a recent acknowledgment by NDC General Secretary Fifi Kwetey that the party needed internal reforms, Samuel Koku Anyidoho implied that his alleged dismissal from the party was a consequence of advocating for similar changes.

He issued a challenge to the current chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, and the party’s leader, John Dramani Mahama, urging them to undertake similar actions against Kwetey. Anyidoho pointed out that Asiedu Nketiah, in his previous role as the party scribe, supervised the proceedings that resulted in Anyidoho’s expulsion for anti-party conduct.

“Let the Chairman and the Leader of the NDC dare come out and sack the General Secretary if they have the “balls” to do so,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

His post was accompanied by Kwetey’s speech at the commemorative anniversary of the 31st December Revolution that marked the second coming into office of former president Jerry John Rawlings as a military leader in 1981.

“There is real decay and that decay continues to be in the NDC today. So, I don’t want us the NDC to pretend that 31st is simply a day to bash NPP, (the) NPP is not the issue, the issue is bigger than NPP.

“The decay even within the NPP must stop with that blazing fire and that is what this business is about,” Kwetey submitted.

He stressed that unless the NDC rids itself of the internal decay, the 2024 victory will be meaningless.

“It is in vain if we win power only to continue what we see, only to do some of the things that we are seeing and only to claim we are doing less, that is not enough,” he cautioned.

Election 2024: Mahama promises new budget targeted at supporting and building small businesses

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has vowed to introduce a fresh budget in April 2025 should he secure the presidency.

In his New Year message to Ghanaians on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, John Dramani Mahama revealed his plan to introduce a fresh budget, emphasizing its focus on bolstering and nurturing small businesses across the country.

Additionally, he announced plans to adjust taxes by providing incentives aimed at fostering a conducive environment for businesses to thrive. The NDC flagbearer reiterated his vision to roll out a 24-hour economy.

“At the heart of my vision for economic revitalization is the implementation of a 24-hour economy. This innovation policy seeks to maximize productivity and efficiency by extending business hours and operations around the clock,” John Dramani Mahama stated.

The 24-hour economy, he said, would create a more vibrant economy that would benefit both workers and businesses.
