NDC operative threatens to deal ruthlessly with Owusu-Bempah over Mahama ‘attacks’

A member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC),  James Agbey, has issued a formidable warning to Ernest Owusu-Bempah, the deputy communication director of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). This development underscores heightened tensions between key figures from opposing political parties.

Alleging unwarranted attacks on the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama, James Agbey claims that Ernest Owusu-Bempah, the Executive Director of the Ghana National Gas Company Limited, has been needlessly targeting Mahama. This assertion points to escalating political tensions and exchanges between individuals associated with different parties.

In a statement released to GhanaWeb, James Agbey declared that members of his party would handle Ernest Owusu-Bempeh with severity if he persists in his attacks on Mahama, the former president of Ghana. This statement further accentuates the intensifying political friction and the potential for increased confrontations between the two parties.

“Politicians have a duty to uphold the highest standards. We are entrusted by the public to safeguard and protect our democracy. Failing to do so and allowing characters like Owusu-Bempah to taint the halls of power risks the very foundation of our democracy.

“It is no secret that this weakling and pathetic stooge is incredibly fixated with the former president. Let me assure him that we have taken notice of him and we’re coming for him,” the NDC operative wrote.

He added that, “I, James Agbey, acting on behalf of my colleague operatives in the NDC can assure Owusu-Bempah that the NPP will be sent parking out of the Jubilee House on December 7 through the ballot box, and there’s absolutely nothing he can do about that. However, if his likes decide to play the long game, then he should be ready to pay the price for his clownish politics”.

NDC Operative warns: We will deal ruthlessly with Owusu-Bempah if his attacks on Mahama continues
    ———-

I have become aware of yet another dose of Ernest Owusu-Bempah’s mindless drivel directed at His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the former president of Ghana.

Ernest Owusu-Bempah infamously has no shame when it comes to disparaging others, but he should make an exception and be ashamed of his recent, continuing attacks on former President John Mahama.

Instead, he continues to prove that he is a man without character and backbone.

His Facebook post yesterday was almost deranged in its utter lack of conviction. Typical of Owusu-Bempah, he once again portrayed President Mahama as a failure, and even went further to assassinate the character of the former president.

I’ve long been convinced that this Owusu-Bempah boy ought to have his head examined. His blend of nastiness, pettiness and general mental incompetence marked him out as a social misfit.

Indeed, it is quite astonishing just how little Owusu-Bempah cares for anyone but himself yet managed to persuade a decent chunk of NPP insiders that he is fit enough to work as a public servant in a department that was incorporated under the Mahama/Mahama regime .

Owusu-Bempah has got the comfort blanket of Ghana Gas Company Limited to keep him warm and so he feels he is untouchable.

When are these twats in government going to wake up and realise that Ghana isn’t their personal property?

That we have such a comical character parading himself as a politcal player is a stain on our country.

Quite clearly, the likes of Owusu-Bempah hasn’t figured out yet that picking a curious series of public fights on social media and its related confrontational stunts also reflects his thinking as a public servant.

Politicians have a duty to uphold the highest standards. We are entrusted by the public to safeguard and protect our democracy. Failing to do so and allowing characters like Owusu-Bempah to taint the halls of power risks the very foundation of our democracy.

It is no secret that this weakling and pathetic stooge is incredibly fixated with the former president. Let me assure him that we have taken notice of him and we’re coming for him.

I, James Agbey, acting on behalf of my colleague operatives in the NDC can assure Owusu-Bempah that the NPP will be sent parking out of the Jubilee House on December 7 through the ballot box, and there’s absolutely nothing he can do about that. However, if his likes decides to play the long game, then he should be ready to pay the price for his clownish politics.

He should toughen up, and hide his face.

    Signed:
    James Agbey –

Mahama promises Muslims additional Eid holiday if he wins 2024 polls

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged his preparedness to grant an additional Eid holiday to Muslims in the country should the NDC assume power in the next government. This assurance underscores Mahama’s dedication to recognizing and accommodating the religious celebrations of the Muslim community.

Addressing a pertinent issue, the former president voiced apprehensions about the hindrance Muslims face in fully enjoying their holidays due to challenges associated with moon sighting.

These statements were conveyed by Mr Mahama during the 63rd Annual National Conference of the Ghana Muslim Mission held in Kumasi on Friday, December 29.

He emphasized modifying the Public Holidays Act to benefit Muslims, adding that he would ensure it does not affect productivity.

Mr Mahama assured, “It is our intention to resolve the situation where some of our Muslim brothers and sisters do not enjoy the public holiday at the end of Ramadan fast due to the 29 or 30-day rule based on sighting the moon. Therefore, we will add a holiday to the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr. If Insha-Allah we are voted into office, we will add an additional holiday to the Eid-ul-Fitr celebration. And we are going to do this by reconfiguring the Public Holiday Act so that Ghana maintains the same number of public holidays per year so that we do not affect productivity.”

The Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu, on December 14, initiated a new private members bill to amend the country’s Public Holidays Act 2001, Act 601, by providing an additional two Islamic public holidays.

These are Tashreeq (a day after the Eid-al-Adha Festival) and Shaqq (a day before the Eid-al-Fitr).

The bill was submitted to the Clerk of Parliament on Wednesday, 29th November 2023, and is currently being processed.

Muslim leaders, on October 8, urged the government to designate two days as official holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha to address recurring disputes over the commencement of these holidays.

The Conference of Regional Imams of Ghana highlighted the persistent uncertainty about whether the Ramadan holiday should be observed on the 29th or 30th day.

“Together we shall build the Ghana we want, a prosperous and just Ghana filled with opportunities for all,” the former President added.

Tamale South Member of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, has entreated Ghanaians to cast resounding votes for John Mahama in the forthcoming 2024 elections.

Highlighting his conviction, he asserted that the former President is positioned for a comeback to the presidency, armed with invaluable insights that promise a positive impact on the Ghanaian economy.

Mr. Iddrisu asserts that Mr. Mahama stands as the prime candidate to navigate the economic challenges confronting the Akufo-Addo government.

He commented on Thursday, December 28, during a ceremony where he received the prestigious chieftaincy title “Sugru-Lana” or Chief of Patience from the paramount chief of Nakpanduri, Naba David Kansuk Na Golbila II, and his sub-chiefs at the palace.

“I have said that former President Mahama is coming back to the throne with two important insights and one important hindsight.

“He has been President, and he is being outside as non-president, and he will combine the two to change the destiny of this country.”

He additionally urged local chiefs and residents to throw their support behind NDC MPs, emphasising that their votes would play a crucial role in enabling Mr Mahama to bring about the necessary transformation in both the local area and the entire nation.

The vocal MP affirmed his unwavering commitment to actively contribute to the progress and growth of the country.

You have elevated Ghana’s reputation globally – Mahama to Afua Asantewaa

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has applauded a Ghanaian woman, Afua Asantewaa, for her remarkable attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest Sing-A-Thon.

Mr. Mahama commends her tenacity and notes that her efforts have garnered global attention, providing an opportunity to showcase the strength, agency, and industry of Ghanaian women.

In a message on his X platform, Mahama stated, “Afua Asantewaa, a young Ghanaian woman, is on her fourth day of attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the longest Sing-A-Thon. She has some 25 hours left to break the existing record, and her tenacity is worth celebrating. Her effort has brought global attention to Ghana and a chance to showcase the strength, agency, and industry of Ghanaian women.”

Ghana’s Afua Asantewaa Aduonum is embarking on a journey to set a new world record for the longest individual singing marathon.

Singing Ghanaian songs continuously at the Akwaaba village, she aims to surpass the existing record held by Indian artist Sunil Waghmare, who sang for 105 hours in March 2012.

  • NPP has about 95% greedy leaders – Communications team member

NPP has about 95% greedy leaders – Communications team member

A member of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) Communication Team, Kofi Amponsah, has expressed his concerns about what he perceives as widespread greed among the party’s top leadership.

Amponsah highlighted that many leaders within the NPP have succumbed to greed, prioritizing their selfish interests over the welfare of loyal party members who have tirelessly supported and dedicated themselves to the party.

In a candid interview on NET2 TV’s Dialogdue, when asked about the greed among NPP leaders, Amponsah candidly replied, “NPP leaders are greedy. Majority of them not some of them; NPP members are very greedy. Honestly, it is a party that we don’t want to say certain matters in public but some need to be told.

He expressed his disappointment, noting that while there are a few exceptions like MP Seyram Alhassan and Honourable Ken, who prioritize the well-being of others, the majority exhibit selfish tendencies.

“The majority are very wicked. The likes of my MP, Seyram Alhassan and Honourable Ken who will sacrifice their own to make you happy are a few. Those people are very few in the NPP but 95% [are greedy]… sometimes you are compelled to feel regret for going round and campaigning for the NPP,” he stated.

Mr Amponsah lamented that approximately 95% of NPP members are characterized by greed, making it challenging to campaign for the party with enthusiasm.

He cited concerns about the state of the economy, the neglect of grassroots members by party leaders, and the choice of the presidential candidate for the upcoming 2024 elections as factors contributing to a challenging campaign.

Despite his criticisms, Amponsah maintained that the NPP, despite its flaws, remains a more viable option for governance compared to the opposition National Democratic Congress and its presidential candidate, former President John Dramani Mahama.

Jomoro to get petro-chemical industry under next Mahama govt

Former President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to the people of Jomoro in the Western Region that, if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) comes into power, the next government will establish a petrochemical industry in their area.

The promise suggests a commitment to fostering economic development and creating job opportunities by leveraging the region’s potential in the petrochemical sector.

Such initiatives are often aimed at stimulating local economies, enhancing industrial growth, and addressing the specific needs and aspirations of the community.

That, he said, formed part of measures to expand the oil and gas industry.

Mr. Mahama, the flagbearer of the NDC for the 2024 general elections, was addressing the chiefs and people of Jaway-Wharf in the Jomoro Municipality as part of his two-day visit to the region, dubbed; “Building Ghana Tour.”

He also hinted of building an ultra-modern market in Jaway-Wharf to boost trade and revive commercial activities in the once vibrant town.

He assured the chiefs and people of an asphaltic road overlay to modernize the area and aid trade.

The former president is expected to address a town hall meeting at Ambainu in the Ellembelle District and address students at the Esiama Nursing Training School.

He will later hold another town-hall meeting for the chiefs and people of Evaloe-Adjomoro Gwira Constituency at Axim.

  • NDC has the men to fix Ghana’s economy crisis – Mahama

NDC has the men to fix Ghana’s economy crisis – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has promised to put Ghana’s economy back on track if given the nod as President of the country.

He said the NDC is endowed with potential men and women who have the ability to turn the country’s economic misfortunes around.

According to him, the next NDC government, when voted back into office, will put the economy back on a sound footing.

Speaking to students of the Sefwi Wiaso Nurses Training College, John Dramani Mahama attributed the hike in fuel prices, foodstuffs, among others, to the mismanagement of the economy by the Akufo-Addo-led government.

“I met some drivers, and they apologized to me for voting me out. A gallon of petrol during my time was GH¢14, but now it’s above … or more; I can’t even tell. All these things are a result of the mismanaged economy.

“We buy fuel with dollars, so if the economy is not managed well and the dollar-to-cedi rate is lower, the prices of goods and services will decrease, but because the economy has been mismanaged, petrol is expensive. The NDC has the men and women to manage the economy very well. When we come back to power, we will ensure we make life better for you people,” he stated.

It would be recalled that the local economy took a nose dive after it was hit with the global pandemic – the Coronavirus – and the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine War.

The governing New Patriotic Party, however, put in measures to make the economy more robust to withstand any shock; locally or internationally.

As part of measures to fix the broken economy, the government run to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a US$3 billion financial bailout programme.

Subsequently, a team from the IMF arrived in the country from July 6 to July 13, 2022, to engage Ghanaian authorities on a possible economic support programme.

A staff-level agreement between the government of Ghana and the IMF was reached in December 2022.

On May 17, 2023, IMF’s executive board approved Ghana’s $3 billion loan facility.

  • John Mahama’s running mate revealed

    John Mahama’s running mate revealed

Former President John Dramani Mahama has reportedly decided to maintain Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the 2024 election.

This was revealed by a host of Adom TV’s morning show, Badwam Mpensenpensenmu, who claimed to have received the information from reliable sources close to Mahama.

The host, who interrupted the programme to announce the breaking news, said: “Listen and listen well, the breaking news coming in is that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has nominated Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. He has settled on the woman that she will be his running mate for the 2024 election. What I am telling you is from conversations had from the office, from the house, from the bedroom, from the car of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. It is that, he has settled on Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang. In the next few days to come, he will introduce her as his running mate to the NDC.”

The news was also posted by a pro-NDC Twitter page, @AnnanPerry, who said that the information was yet to be confirmed by the flagbearer and the party.

Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, if confirmed, will be making a return as Mahama’s running mate. She became the first female running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) when Mahama selected her as his partner for the 2020 election.

With an impressive political portfolio, Professor Opoku Agyemang has served in various capacities, contributing significantly to the educational sector.

Prof Opoku-Agyemang is a former Minister for Education and a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast. She is a full professor of literature and a distinguished scholar.

She is widely respected for her achievements in the education sector and her contributions to the development of the country. She is also known for her calm and composed demeanour and her eloquence in public speaking. She has received several awards and honours, both locally and internationally, for her academic and professional excellence.

The choice, if proven could mean that the former president is confident in Prof Opoku-Agyemang abilities and believes that she can help him win back power from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). It also implies that Mahama is committed to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in the political sphere.

Meanwhile, the NPP’s flagbearer, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, is yet to announce his running mate for the 2024 election. There are speculations that he may choose a candidate from the Ashanti region, which is considered a stronghold of the NPP. Some of the names that have been mentioned as potential candidates include Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Minister of Energy, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister of Communications, and Frema Osei Opare, the Chief of Staff.

The selection of the running mates for both Mahama and Bawumia will have a significant impact on the outcome of the 2024 election, which is expected to be a keenly contested one.

The running mates will have to demonstrate their competence, charisma, and vision to the electorate and complement their flagbearers in their campaign strategies.

The 2024 election will also be a historic one, as it will be the first time that two former vice presidents will face each other in a presidential race.

  • NDC to start preparations in 2024 to select running mate

NDC to start preparations in 2024 to select running mate

Former President, John Dramani Mahama says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will choose his running mate for the next election in 2024.

This was in response to calls from some traditional authorities in Asunafo South for the flagbearer to consider their MP, Eric Opoku for the position.

Already, the queen mother of the Bono Traditional Council has made similar calls for a Bono native to be chosen for the role.

However, Mr. Mahama stated that although the position is significant, there are established protocols for selecting the best candidate.

During a public appearance in the Ahafo Region, Mr. Mahama urged calm as the party anticipates making the decision.

He told the gathering; “What I will say is that, just like custom has it, our party also has processes to select candidates for various roles.”

“It is the Presidential candidate, National executives, and Council of Elders who come together to select a running mate. But that process will start next year. So keep praying for such a time,” Mr Mahama explained.

  • There’s a lot of sense in Mahama proposal to shun Teacher Licensure Exams – Sammy Gyamfi

In a strong defence of former President John Mahama’s promise to eliminate the Teacher Licensure Exams (TLEs) if elected President in 2024, Sammy Gyamfi, the Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has argued that the exams are a tactic by the current administration to hinder teacher recruitment.

During his ‘Building Ghana Tour’ in the Bono Region, Mahama pledged to do away with the Teacher Licensure Exams, stating that subjecting teacher trainees to an additional assessment for qualification is unnecessary.

This position has faced criticism from the Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG), which emphasises the exams’ importance.

In response to these concerns, Gyamfi emphasised that teacher trainees already undergo rigorous four-year Bachelor of Education programs, covering at least fifty courses and eight semesters of intensive study.

He questioned the necessity of an additional exam after such comprehensive training.

Gyamfi decried the Teacher Licensure Exams as a “dubious ploy” by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government to cut down on teacher recruitment due to financial constraints.

He disclosed that a significant number of qualified teacher trainees experience failure in the exams, leading to unemployment and pushing some to resort to bribery to secure licenses.

Gyamfi highlighted the lack of transparency in the Teacher Licensure Exams marking scheme, pointing out that pass marks are arbitrarily adjusted to meet the government’s hiring requirements. He also noted that even those who eventually pass the exams often face delays in securing employment.

In reiterating Mahama’s commitment to education, Gyamfi emphasised the NDC’s plan to concentrate on enhancing pre-certification education standards and examinations in Colleges of Education.

He emphasised that this approach would better ensure the quality of future teachers without imposing unnecessary barriers to employment.

Below is the full statement by the Sammy Gyamfi

MAHAMA’S PROMISE TO ABOLISH OBNOXIOUS TEACHERS’ LICENSURE EXAMINATION IS SOUND AND SENSIBLE

H.E John Mahama and the NDC fully support the Licensing and Registration of Teachers as required by sections 12 & 13 of the Education Act (ACT 778), 2008. What we are vehemently opposed to, is the use of a needless Licensure Exam as the basis or precondition for licensing teachers. It’s as simple as that.

Below are the reasons why the Teachers’ Licensure Exam is obnoxious and hence must be abolished:

    1. Currently, Teacher Trainees undertake 4-year (Bachelors of Education) degree programs in various Colleges of Education. During the 4-year academic period, Teacher Trainees are taught and examined in not less than fifty (50) courses over eight (8) semesters, that is, two semesters per year.
    2. It is worthy of note, that the curriculum for each semester includes a mandatory field practical course called Supported Teaching in Schools (STS). This practical academic activity is climaxed with a rigorous full-semester mandatory internship course during the first semester of level 400. During this period, Teacher Trainees are assigned to the field to understudy mentors in classrooms and practically guided to teach. Trainees are required to prepare lesson notes, reflective journals among others, for assessment. After successfully passing eight (8) semester examinations involving not less than 30 courses, including the mandatory full-semester internship course, Teacher Trainees graduate from school and are issued with Bachelors of Education Degree certificates.
    3. One would have thought that the right thing for government to do after this, would have been to simply license and employ these teachers and pay them the appropriate salary, as the practice had always been, before the current NPP government took office. Sadly, this is not the case now.
    4. In a dubious ploy by the failed Akufo-Addo/Bawumia government to suppress teacher recruitment, they now require Teacher Trainee graduates who have successfully passed all their course exams in school including the mandatory field internship program, to undertake another examination called Licensure Examination before they are licensed to teach- an examination that has no active guide whatsoever.
    5. To add insult to injury, Teacher Trainees are also forced to undertake a one-year compulsory National Service. This is despite the fact that their 4-year academic curriculum already involves intense teaching support services to the state.
    6. Many Teacher Trainee graduates end up being failed after taking the obnoxious licensure exam without even knowing why they were failed. These qualified teachers are made to stay home without any job. Out of desperation, some are compelled to pay bribes to officials of the National Teaching Council in order to get a license. The marking scheme for the obnoxious licensure examination remains a mystery. The pass mark is whimsically and capriciously adjusted depending on the number of qualified teachers government intends to deny employment every year. Even worse is the fact that, some teachers who failed the obnoxious licensure exam on their first attempt but have eventually managed to pass the the exam have been denied posting and are siting home idle.
    7. The reason for this injustice is simple; the failed Akufo-Addo government/Bawumia government simply does not have the financial capacity to employ all Teacher Trainee graduates, hence has devised a plan to use the obnoxious licensure exam to suppress the number of teachers they have to employ every year under the guise of licensing teachers. This elimination by rough tactic is simply unfair. This is why, the visionary Nation Builder, H.E John Dramani Mahama has promised to abolish it when elected in 2024.
    8. For those who are concerned about quality assurance, it is worthy of note, that section 13 of the Education Act requires professional certification as the basis for licensing and registering Teachers. Thus, any policy or proposal intended to improve quality assurance must focus on improving pre-certification education standards and examination in Colleges of Education. This is precisely what John Mahama is talking about.
    9. If government thinks that all the academic examinations and field works Teacher Trainees are taken through during their 4-year programs in school are not enough for quality assurance, then what government ought to do is to improve pre-certification teaching and examination standards in line with best practices. Once that is done, there will be no need for another exam to license teachers after they have successfully graduated.
    10. Using myself as an example, the pre-certification course and exam in the law school where I attended is very rigorous and competitive. Once you pass it and successfully undertake the mandatory internship course, you are licensed and called to the Bar. You are not required to write another licensure exams before you are licensed as a lawyer. Neither are you required to undertake compulsory national service before you are licensed. You are only required to do pupillage after you are licensed as a lawyer. This practice is the same for doctors and other professional bodies.
    11. For the avoidance of doubt, licensing is not the same as Licensure Examination. I am a licensed lawyer but I was not required to write any licensure exam before I was licensed as a lawyer. The NDC started piloting the licensing of teachers in the year 2016 without examination. We were ready to fully rollout the policy for the 2016/2017 academic year before we lost power. See https://www.graphic.com.gh/news/general-news/new-teacher-licensing-starts-from-2016-17-academic-year.html
    12. The visionary Nation Builder has spoken in very clear terms on this matter. No attempt to spin to this well-thought out policy will wash. The obnoxious Teachers’ Licensure Exams and superfluous National Service will be canceled after John Mahama is sworn in as President on 7th January, 2025. “Insha Allah!” Teacher trainees deserve to be automatically licensed and employed after successfully completing their 4-year programs.

  • NPP will use and dump you – Mahama tells Bawumia (FLASHBACK)

NPP will use and dump you – Mahama tells Bawumia (FLASHBACK)

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has elected Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer for the 2024 general elections. Dr. Bawumia won the presidential primary held on November 4, 2023, with 118210 votes representing 61.43% of total votes. The Electoral Commission has declared him as the winner and the new leader of the NPP.

This development has brought attention to a past statement from former President John Dramani Mahama, who had claimed that the NPP would never allow Dr. Bawumia to be its flagbearer. Mr. Mahama, who was the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2016 and 2020 elections, had made this remark during a campaign rally in the Northern Region in November 2016.

Below is an excerpt from an article published on graphic.com.gh that reported Mr. Mahama’s statement:

President John Dramani Mahama has predicted that  Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will be dumped by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after using him for the party’s dirty job.

He said he felt sorry for Dr Bawumia because he would never be given the opportunity to lead the NPP when the time comes.

Speaking at a mini rally of the NDC in Lawra Friday as part of his campaign tour of the Upper West Region,  the President said  opportunities in the NPP were restricted.

Using what he said happened to Alhaji Aliu Mahama as an example,  President Mahama said, “Alhaji Aliu Mahama was Vice President under the NPP government. He served faithfully under President Kufuor and, so, when eight years was up and President Kufuor was leaving, the natural order of succession is that he should have been given the opportunity to lead that party but, 17 people contested him and defeated him.”

“That is why I say NDC is a party of opportunity because if NDC wasn’t, who am I, a boy from Bole born in Damango, who am I to stand here and call myself President of the Republic of Ghana?”

President Mahama said in the NDC,  opportunities were opened to all no matter a person’s ethnic background.

Turning to his “northern brothers” ; the President said, “I feel sad when I see some of our northern brothers running around and also doing certain things. They will use you and dump you.”

“Let anything happen today and let our brother Bawumia say he is standing for President in NPP. They will never give it to him, I can assure you,” he told hundreds of supporters of the NDC that gathered at the rally.

He added, “When the misfortune hit us and our father Professor Mills passed away, the Constitution said the Vice President should take over, I did. But then we were close to an election. If it was another party, they would have insisted that there should be a Congress and in that Congress I would have been contested and they would have given the leadership to somebody else.”

Mr. Mahama’s statement has been proven wrong by the outcome of the NPP flagbearer election, which has shown that the party has confidence in Dr. Bawumia’s leadership and vision. Dr. Bawumia, who is also a native of the Northern Region, has been the running mate of President Nana Akufo-Addo since 2008 and has played a key role in the NPP’s economic and digital policies. He has also been praised for his performance as the head of the Economic Management Team and the Vice Chair of the Police Council.

Dr. Bawumia will face the NDC’s flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, in the 2024 presidential election.

‘I think in a broad sense, yes’ – Atuguba responds to politically inclined judiciary claim

Retired Supreme Court Justice William Atuguba has acknowledged that former President John Dramani Mahama’s concerns about the perceived political influence within the judiciary are valid in a general sense.

In September of this year, Mahama voiced his criticism of the judiciary during the New Patriotic Party’s administration, alleging that the courts had been filled with judges favoring the NPP to sway decisions in their favor.

He went on to encourage NDC lawyers to prepare themselves to assume positions on the bench with the aim of creating a more balanced composition.

Addressing the comments on JoyNews’ Upfront programme, Justice William Atuguba said, “I think in a broad sense, yes. The courts belong to the public, and that thing should never be lost sight of.

“Everything in the state belongs to the people. Every other person in any position is a trustee for the people, and that’s why court proceedings are held in public for the public to follow the proceedings to assess things for themselves to see how justice is administered, whether it’s fair or not.”

Justice Atuguba stressed the importance of not ignoring public perceptions and apprehensions regarding the judiciary’s credibility.

He highlighted the substantial public discontent regarding the composition of the Supreme Court, with many perceiving it as having political inclinations favoring the NPP. This perception has grown to the extent that the court has been disparagingly dubbed “Unanimous FC.”

The former senior member of the apex court criticized the prevalent practice in Ghana where critical issues are often pushed aside. He pointed to past public concerns about judicial corruption that came to light before investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas exposed instances of corrupt judges.

However, he does not concur with Mahama’s suggestion of achieving a fair balance of appointments based on partisan affiliations on the bench.

He emphasized that this approach would not be beneficial and that the primary focus should be on guaranteeing fair and impartial judgments, rather than engaging in political maneuvering.

  • Customers of Menzgold calls on Mahama’s intervention to recover locked-up funds

A group of investors who had put their money into the now-defunct Menzgold Company Limited has reached out to former President John Dramani Mahama for assistance in recovering their locked-up funds from the illegal gold dealership and investment firm.

Since the closure of Menzgold in 2018, these investors have endured significant hardships, with some facing severe financial difficulties, vision impairment, and mental health challenges.

Tragically, there have also been reported cases of deaths among their ranks.

In a bid to address their dire circumstances, the affected investors are now calling on the former president to lead their efforts in seeking financial assistance from the government.

During a meeting held at Mr. Mahama’s Cantonments office on Friday, September 29, 2023, Fred Forson, the spokesperson for the group, made an emotional plea to the former president, underscoring the urgency of their situation and their desperate need for government intervention.

“We believe that when your Excellency adds your voice, it will help.

“Where we are now, we need a bailout from the state, so we humbly call on you to lead us in calling on the state to give us a bailout plan. Because life is very, very unbearable for us,” he expressed.

Mr. Forson also underscored the group’s unwavering commitment throughout the years to seek justice and retrieve their investments. He emphasized that their relentless efforts had resulted in the case being elevated from a lower court to the High Court.

President Mahama, on his part, expressed his condolences to the victims and acknowledged the unfortunate nature of the situation, attributing the success of such fraudulent schemes to a lack of robust government regulatory oversight. He questioned why the government had not taken control of Menzgold’s accounts, confiscated the company’s assets, and auctioned them off to provide partial compensation to the affected customers.

In response to the customers’ plea, President Mahama pledged his support for their cause and promised to raise awareness about their plight. He urged the government to be transparent in its efforts to alleviate the situation.

With the backing of the former president, the Menzgold customers remain hopeful that they can recover their funds and embark on the journey of rebuilding their lives after enduring substantial losses.

  • Fulani or Hausa ethnicity doesn’t negate Ghanaian identity – Mahama

Fulani or Hausa ethnicity doesn’t negate Ghanaian identity – Mahama

Former president, John Dramani Mahama has urged minority tribal communities facing nationality challenges to assert their rights during voter registration or any registration process.

Mahama emphasized that minority ethnic groups in Ghana, such as the Fulanis and Hausas, have made significant contributions to the nation’s formation and progress, deserving recognition as Ghanaians.

In a viral video on Sunday, September 17, 2023, the former president and the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 elections, expressed his view that it is unjust for officials from the Electoral Commission(EC) or any registration personnel to reject individuals solely based on their identification with these minority groups.

“… at that time there was no country called Ghana. The Fulanis brought cattle to sell, the Zambramas were here, the Gaos were here, the Mosis were here – everybody was here long before we knew there would be a country called Ghana.

“If you look at those who fought in the 2nd World War, go to Kumasi there is a memorial there, and read the names of those who went and fought and died. You would see all those different northern tribes, they all went and fought in the 2nd World War and at that time there was no country called Ghana,” he said.

The former president emphasized that every individual, regardless of their ethnic background, possesses the right to be acknowledged as a Ghanaian.

He further pointed out that the ancestors of these ethnic communities had been in Ghana long before the nation itself was established.

“As so today, when we have a country called Ghana, all of us make up that country. Ghana is a country united in diversity because it is the various ethnic groupings that make Ghana stronger

“… when it comes to registration and you mention your name and the ask who are you, you say ‘I’m a Fulani’. They would say oh, you are not a Ghanaian, we are challenging you. You say ‘Oh I’m a Hausa’, you are from northern Nigeria. Everybody in this country came from somewhere, we all migrated and came,” he said.

  • COCOBOD criticizes Mahama for cocoa price remarks

COCOBOD criticizes Mahama for cocoa price remarks

The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) has criticized former President John Dramani Mahama‘s remarks regarding the government’s decision to raise the cocoa bag price to GH₵1,300.

Mahama had labeled the government as “insensitive” to farmers’ concerns, asserting that the increase fell short.

In a statement dated September 12, COCOBOD CEO Joseph Boahen Aidoo suggested that Mahama should be well-acquainted with the cocoa producer price determination process.

Aidoo clarified that for the 2023/24 crop, cocoa had been sold at international prices ranging from $2,200 to $2,400 per tonne between October 2022 and March 2023.

“Since you have had the privilege of being in government before as the number one gentleman of the country, it is expected that you would be familiar with the process for determining the producer price of cocoa.

“I am, therefore, surprised that you chose, rather erroneously, to use the current international market price of cocoa at $3,600 per tonne as the basis for your calculation in your post on the recently announced producer”.

It was reported by COCOBOD that the 2023/24 crop was sold at international prices between October 2022 and March 2023, ranging between $2,200 per tonne and $2,400 per tonne.

“You are fully aware that Ghana’s cocoa beans are mostly sold forward. This means that the 2023/24 crop was sold between October 2022 and March 2023 at international prices; ranging between $2,200 per tonne and $2,400 per tonne. The international price of cocoa then began to increase in April 2023, when a greater percentage of the 2023/24 crop had already been sold,” COCOBOD said in its statement.

  • List of Supreme Court Judges appointed by Akufo-Addo, Mahama, and previous administrations

List of Supreme Court Judges appointed by Akufo-Addo, Mahama, and previous administrations

Ghana’s judiciary is a cornerstone of its democracy, and the composition of the Supreme Court plays a pivotal role in shaping the country’s legal landscape.

Over the years, various administrations have appointed judges to the highest court in the land, and today we take a closer look at the Supreme Court judges appointed by Presidents Akufo-Addo, Mahama, and their predecessors.

  • Akufo-Addo appointed judges sympathetic to the NPP -John Mahama

Akufo-Addo appointed judges sympathetic to the NPP -John Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama has alleged that the current government has stacked the Judiciary with judges who are sympathetic to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

John Mahama contends that the current administration has intentionally and knowingly appointed individuals close to their party to the second arm of government.

Speaking at the conclusion of the 3rd Annual Lawyers Conference of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Saturday, September 2, he asserted that this move by the NPP is aimed at shielding themselves from accountability once they are no longer in power.

According to him, there are about 80 of such judges in the system, and the number may cross 100.

“Currently, the judiciary is packed with NPP-inclined judges because this government has carried out a deliberate policy of putting their people onto the bench.”

“He [Akufo-Addo] has appointed the biggest number of judges onto the bench, it is more than 80 towards 100 and counting. You can see what the current president has done.”

“He has packed the court, and we know they have packed the court because they want to avoid accountability after they have left office.”

So, in order to maintain a balanced party, the 2024 NDC flagbearer recommended the party members to pursue jobs in law.

That, according to him, is the only way to fix the abnormality.

“So, I encourage some of you to look at careers on the bench so that we can balance out what the current situation is. We must be prepared as NDC legal persons to also go onto the bench so that we can balance out the judiciary,” he urged.

‘David’ Bawumia will defeat ‘Goliath’ Mahama – Kwadaso MP

Member of Parliament for Kwadaso, Kingsley Nyarko, for the umpteenth time justifying why Dr Bawumia is the best candidate to be elected as flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

In an interview on Peace FM, he stated the Vice President has both the country and the NPP at hand.

“I’m for Baumia because of the future of this party, because of the stability of this country, and I also believe that the man is competent and can win the race for us, going to face Mahama,” he said.

He asserted that the race is between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) whom he said is being represented by Goliath – John Dramani Mahama, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who is being represented by the David – Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and shared the strong conviction that Dr Bawumia will emerge winner of the presidential primaries and well as the 2024 general elections.

“I believe David, Bawumia, will defeat Goliath, Mahama,” he added.

  • Escalating unemployment and soaring living costs have left the youth in despair – Mahama

Escalating unemployment and soaring living costs have left the youth in despair – Mahama

National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has stated that if the NDC emerges victorious in the 2024 presidential election, his government will implement measures aimed at addressing youth unemployment.

In a statement to mark International Youth Day, the ex-president emphasized that the significant increase in unemployment statistics was a major cause for concern.

He also noted that the cost of living has left many young people feeling hopeless with no opportunities in sight.

“NDC administration will work urgently to equip our youth with the entrepreneurial knowledge and skills needed for a sustainable future,” he said in a Facebook post.

According to him, a 24-hour economy with incentives and tax breaks for manufacturers will be introduced under a new NDC government.

The move he explained will increase recruitment numbers which will eventually financially empower young people.

“We will work to ease the burden of taxes imposed by this NPP administration on Ghanaian businesses and investors, which has robbed Ghana of its envious position as one of Africa’s leading destinations for investment.

We will maximise the potential of agriculture and agribusiness and provide critical social and IT infrastructure to stimulate economic growth.

Our policy priorities will imbue our young people with the “knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society” — the critical Green Skills our youth need to advance a sustainable world.”

    Below is Mahama’s Facebook post.

On International Youth Day, I celebrate the creativity, enterprise, and passion of Ghana’s youth. I want to use this occasion to highlight the importance of our young people as the driving force of positive change and innovation.

Our youth have been key agents of change and development throughout our nation’s history. To ensure a brighter future, we must empower a generation of skilled youth, create decent jobs, and support the youth to transform our country, Africa, and the world.

Rising unemployment, increasing cost of living, and lack of opportunities have left many young people feeling hopeless and are testing their sense of patriotism to the limit.

For me, John Dramani Mahama, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), we are committed to urgently turning this situation around by paving the way for nurturing a generation of skilled youth.

A new NDC administration will work urgently to equip our youth with the entrepreneurial knowledge and skills needed for a sustainable future. We will introduce a 24-hour economy with incentives and tax breaks for manufacturers who will run extra shifts to create more room for employment.

We will work to ease the burden of taxes imposed by this NPP administration on Ghanaian businesses and investors, which has robbed Ghana of its envious position as one of Africa’s leading destinations for investment.

We will maximise the potential of agriculture and agribusiness and provide critical social and IT infrastructure to stimulate economic growth.

Our policy priorities will imbue our young people with the “knowledge, abilities, values and attitudes needed to live in, develop and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society” — the critical Green Skills our youth need to advance a sustainable world.

People matter, and by working together, we will build the Ghana we want and put the smiles back on the faces of our young people.

    Happy International Youth Day.

  • Joyce Bawa baffled over gov’t’s silence on Cecilia Dapaah scandal

Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama has raised concerns about the persistent lack of response from the government regarding the scandal involving the former Minister of Sanitation, Cecilia Dapaah.

Joyce Bawa Mogtari intimates that the absence of a response raises questions about whether the government truly holds a regard for the citizens of Ghana.

In a tweet on Saturday, August 12, the former Deputy Transport Minister said government has simply lost the fight against corruption.

According to her, any government that is serious about the corruption fight would have addressed the public on the issue.

“While we continue to wonder how an individual, a Minister of State, will keep such large sums of money at home, when she’s not known to have any other business, is it not surprising that the government has still not addressed the Cecilia Dapaah scandal?”

“This is unprecedented in our history,” she tweeted.

Sources at the Office of the Special Prosecutor on Thursday, August 10, disclosed the amounts of money in the frozen bank accounts of the former minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah.

The sources revealed that the OSP tracked $5 million that had hit the account over a period, along with GH¢48 million found in Cecilia Dapaah’s Prudential Bank accounts.

Also, it found GH¢1 million in investments and GH¢700,000 in cash in her Societe General account.

Details from Kissi Agyebeng’s Office have revealed that a cash amount of $590,000 was discovered during a search at her Abelemkpe home.

At the same residence, a sum of ¢2,730,000 in cash was found.

JoyNews understands the former Minister’s cedi and dollar accounts have been frozen by OSP pending further investigations.

The OSP on July 26, arrested Cecilia Abena Dapaah and conducted a search in her official residence at Cantonments after it emerged that two house helps had stolen huge amounts of money and some items from her home.

Her private residence at Abelemkpe in Accra, where the said theft reportedly took place between July and October 2022, was also searched.

OSP subsequently filed a motion to confirm the seized money it retrieved from the former Minister’s residence and to also confirm the frozen bank accounts.

  • Mahama is a spent force – Mustapha Salam

Mahama is a spent force – Mustapha Salam

National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has justified his call on Ghanaians to refrain from voting in favor of Former President John Dramani Mahama

He asserts that Mr Mahama is now “a spent force” in the political landscape, and lacks the capability to fulfill the responsibilities of a president.

Speaking on the track record of he New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), during the Kokrokoo Morning show, he noted that despite a few hitches, the NPP government led by President Akufo-Addo has performed way better than the Mahama administration.

“I have trust and believe that the NPP represents a better alternative any day though we are humans and we may have faulted in one way or the other. We have made errors but on the balance of any scale, our performance outweighs that of the NDC,” he noted.

He further noted that Mr Mahama has declined in significance and no longer holds the same level of influence or capability as it did in the past.

“We have experienced governance under NDC and I’ve said time without number that John Mahama is a spent force in this country. We have seen the best he can give and he has nothing more to offer,” he added.

  • Saglemi housing project has not been abandoned – Asenso Boakye tells Mahama

Saglemi housing project has not been abandoned – Asenso Boakye tells Mahama

Minister for Works and Housing, Francis Asenso-Boakye, has responded to recent claims by former President John Dramani Mahama concerning the Saglemi housing project.

During a radio interview on Okay FM, the minister refuted all allegations suggesting that the government had left the project unattended.

Instead, Asenso-Boakye clarified that the government is steadfast in its dedication to finishing the Saglemi project.

He emphasized that both he and the president had reiterated this commitment during the launch of a new housing project in Pokuase.

According to him, the government is taking necessary steps to ensure the revival and completion of the project.

To address the challenges faced by the Saglemi project, the minister revealed that the government is considering involving the private sector in its implementation.

He disclosed that this decision was made after careful consideration and extensive consultations, with Cabinet convening three times to review the project’s complexities and its financial challenges.

He further stated that the conclusion reached was that private sector participation would offer the most viable approach to ensure the project’s successful completion.

Asenso-Boakye further elaborated on the financial analysis conducted by the government.

“Despite an initial investment of nearly US$200 million, the Saglemi project still requires substantial additional funding. Approximately US$46 million is needed for off-site infrastructure development, covering essential amenities such as water, electricity, drainage works, among others. Moreover, an additional US$68 million is required to complete on-site works, which include the repair and completion of the existing units, sewerage system, civic amenities, among others. This brings the total additional costs to a staggering US$114 million, on top of the funds already spent,” he said.

In light of the ongoing court case surrounding the project, the minister disclosed that he had taken proactive steps to continue the Saglemi project.

He added that he had sought approval from the Attorney General’s office, which was granted, allowing the government to proceed with the necessary actions to ensure the project’s eventual completion.

This demonstrated the administration’s unwavering dedication to delivering on its promise of reviving the Saglemi Housing Project.

Regarding the decision to initiate a new housing project in Pokuase, he clarified that it is part of a fresh strategy involving collaboration with the private sector for housing development.

Drawing inspiration from successful models in other African countries, he said the government aims to work alongside private sector entities in constructing houses for citizens.

This approach not only ensures cost-effectiveness but also capitalizes on the expertise and experience of private sector partners.

“Since becoming Minister, we have studied the approach adopted by many other African countries, including South Africa, Morocco, Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya, among others, where the government collaborates with the private sector in developing houses for the citizens.

“This not only saves the government a significant amount of financial stress but also allows us to benefit from the expertise and experience of the private sector,” he added.

  • Mahama deems spending over GHC500m on National Cathedral unacceptable while Saglemi Housing Project sits abandoned

Mahama deems spending over GHC500m on National Cathedral unacceptable while Saglemi Housing Project sits abandoned

Former President John Dramani Mahama has criticized President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his administration’s inability to proceed with the Saglemi Housing project.

As reported by citinewsroom.com, the ex-president alleged that President Akufo-Addo’s failure to finalize the Saglemi Housing project stemmed from its initiation by himself.

Mahama further stated that it is incomprehensible for the government to allocate more than GHC500 million towards the construction of the Ghanaian National Cathedral, a project marred by corruption allegations, while neglecting the nearly completed Saglemi Housing Project that was initiated during his tenure.

“It is unacceptable for Akufo-Addo to spend over half a billion cedis on a national cathedral project that has ultimately failed due to corruption and is now abandoned, yet refuses to commit funds to complete a housing project that will benefit thousands of Ghanaian families.

“Knowing the NPP government, they did not want to complete the Saglemi housing project simply because it was initiated by John Mahama and an NDC administration,” he is quoted to have said.

Mahama, who is the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2024 elections, also said that the decision by the government to go one with the National Cathedral project shows its lack of prioritisation.

“Leaders must always prioritise the well-being of their citizens and ensure that they benefit from government resources and projects, regardless of who initiated them.

“The misplaced priorities of a government that claim it is unable to raise money to complete the Saglemi housing project and yet is willing to spend half a billion cedis on the largest civil excavation in Africa is a humiliating slap in the face of Ghanaians who entrusted Akufo Addo with their mandate.”

He added that “Just think about the countless number of Ghanaian families who could have had decent living conditions over the past 7 years and the individuals who could have had a place to truly call home in Saglemi”.

  • Joyce Bawah lists the things make her cry

Aide to former president John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mongtari, renowned for her unwavering strength and resilience, has surprised the nation by sharing a rare glimpse into her emotional world.

In an interview with Joy Prime, the distinguished politician unveiled a vulnerable side, bravely revealing that behind her powerful persona lies a woman who, at times, sheds tears.

During the interaction, the highly esteemed figure in Ghanaian politics, opened up about her personal struggle with infertility, among other things that make her unhappy.

“On the public side, I would say, many things make me unhappy. I’ll say suffering, inequality, injustice of any kind, lack of access, lack of opportunity for those who really need it, etc.

Throughout her illustrious career, Joyce Bawah has earned widespread respect and admiration for her unwavering dedication to public service. However, amidst her thriving public life, she has silently battled the deeply personal struggle of infertility.

“My journey through secondary infertility, whose cause nobody could establish, the hospitals I’ve been through, the specialists I’ve had to engage, and the number of times I’ve had to have direct inseminations or IVFS, I think with the IVFs I probably went through about 15 to 16, or even more and just about, three four surgeries,” she recalled.

In a candid revelation, Joyce Bawah shared her childhood dream of building a beautiful family consisting of her husband and three children. However, life had different plans for her, and her reality did not align with the vision she had once held dear.

“I had this beautiful dream, I mean – I had married very late – that I was going to have this very beautiful family, three lovely kids, a wonderful career, just the kind of life that I had imagined. So yes, you do get married, and then I realise that in a few weeks – actually I’ve been married for about 20 to 21 years old – and to think that my son is only just 16, that should tell you just how long it took even before we had our first son. And how much longer it took between that son and then my amazing blessings, my life story as I call them, so think about it, 16 years,” she recalled.

Joyce Bawah is a revered Ghanaian figure known for her involvement in politics and public service. She previously served as the Special Aide to Former President John Mahama, a position of significant responsibility and influence.

Her contributions to the political landscape and her dedication to public service have earned her respect and recognition in Ghana and beyond. She served as the Special Aide to Former President John Mahama, and her loyalty to him was believed to be one of the factors contributing to her appointment to this position.

  • ‘You never loved Ghana for even a second’ – Netizens take on Akufo-Addo

‘You never loved Ghana for even a second’ – Netizens take on Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo has upset some Ghanaians with a recent statement he made during a meeting held with NPP communicators who recently called on him at the Jubilee House.

The President remarked that he had only one vote and will cast it for the candidate who will be able to win the election.

Tweeting some photos from the meeting on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, he noted that: “I have just one vote, the same as any polling station executive anywhere in the country, and I will cast that vote for an aspirant who, I believe, can best unite the Party, and, above all, who can win the presidential election of 7th December 2024, and inflict a third successive defeat on the perennial NDC Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama.”

His statement has sparked discontent among some Ghanaians who perceive the remarks as unpatriotic.

One tweep identified as Kelvin Ashong accused the president of putting his party first before Ghana, following the remarks.

“And above all, who can win the Presidential election of 7th December 2024”?…..this means you’re not thinking about Ghana. All you’re concerned about is your npp party. You just exposed yourself that you never loved this country for even one second. You’re not a patriotic citizen ngl. Just deceiving Ghanaians a doing everything with self interest. Sad for mother Ghana. Your forefathers are not happy atm. Bad bad,” he said.

“You’re also telling Ghanaians that because you want npp party to win power at all costs, you’re ready to support the candidate who’ll help with that even if he’s incompetent or incapable, and even if there’s a candidate within the party who’s miles better than your candidate, you’ll still pick your ‘friend’. Sad thing is you ruled Ghanaians for almost 8 years with this mentality. Pathetic,” he added.

“That is why he has broken grounds for a new housing project while there is an uncompleted project of the same kind,” another tweep said.

  • Akufo-Addo’s mismanagement threatens Ghana’s democracy – Mahama

    Akufo-Addo’s mismanagement threatens Ghana’s democracy – Mahama

The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has expressed deep concern about the governance of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government, stating that it poses a significant threat to Ghana’s democracy.

Taking to Facebook on Monday, July 31, Mr. Mahama urged Ghanaians to vote out the current administration in the upcoming 2024 election to save the nation from further challenges.

“Transparent and accountable governance in which opportunities are open to all and not just a few is the greatest guarantor of our democracy.

“The almost seven years of Akufo Addo and Bawumia’s maladministration is the biggest threat to the survival of our constitutional democracy. Only a CHANGE in this inept NPP government can ensure the sustainability of our democracy.

“The next NDC administration will work to restore hope to Ghanaians quickly. The business-as-usual approach to governance, lies and propaganda will not work. We cannot and must avoid repeating the mistakes of the NPP.”

He firmly believes that the nearly seven years of the Akufo-Addo and Bawumia administrations have put Ghana’s constitutional democracy at risk.

According to him, the only way to ensure the sustainability of democracy and restore hope to the people is through a change of leadership.

He emphasized the need to replace the current inept NPP government with the NDC administration.

Mr. Mahama stressed that transparent and accountable governance, where opportunities are accessible to all, not just a privileged few, is crucial for upholding democracy in the country.

He further warned against the business-as-usual approach to governance, lies, and propaganda, and pledged that the next NDC administration would work diligently to address the challenges and restore hope to the Ghanaian people.

In addition, John Dramani Mahama criticized President Akufo-Addo’s appointees for their conduct and actions, which he believes are in stark contrast to the president’s previous advice about seeking personal enrichment in the private sector, rather than in politics.

Mahama expressed his disappointment that the current behavior of President Akufo-Addo’s appointees deviates significantly from the president’s wise words spoken more than six years ago.

These remarks were made during his address to the graduating class of 2023 at the Academic City University College.

“Some of you who will find yourself in politics, I wish to sound a note of caution, as President Akufo-Addo said if your goal into office is to enrich yourself, then don’t come, go to the private sector.

“Very profound words were spoken by the President, more than 6 and a half years ago. With what is happening today, I’m sure the President himself does not remember he spoke these very wise words.”

Do not use your leadership roles to victimise, settle personal scores — Mahama urges graduates

Former President John Dramani Mahama has advised graduates to resist the unhealthy temptation of utilising leadership positions to advance personal or partisan interests that could be detrimental to the organization or the nation they are entrusted to serve.

“You should also not use your leadership roles to victimise and settle personal scores but must unite and develop our country,” he added.

The former President made the remarks at the 2023 graduation ceremony of the Academic City University College in Accra

“Do not join these self-centred models of leadership, but I expect you to provide leadership that will strengthen the public service, promote competent-based staff engagement and strengthen systems in both the public and private sectors,” he added.

He urged the graduates to prepare themselves for the leadership tasks,  use their developed competence to provide leadership in solving challenges at home, church, workplaces and wherever they may find themselves.

Former President Mahama said leadership was full of challenges and whoever wanted to be a leader could not escape them, adding that leadership was exciting  where one focused and pursued a noble agenda that sought to serve the best interest of the people.

He urged them to embrace the values of hard work,  honesty,  compassion,  tenacity and patriotism in whatever they do.

Mr Dev Varyani, the Founder of Academic City University College, said, “Our unwavering commitment to fostering a rich learning environment centered around STEAM, Entrepreneurship, and Ethics, has truly shaped a winning formula for any student who joins our academic family.”

He said these past four years had been a journey of growth, self-discovery, and academic excellence.

The Founder said the skills and connections you had forged here would undoubtedly propel their careers and pave the way for their dreams to be fulfilled.

“As you step out into the world, armed with the knowledge, passion, and determination you have acquired, take your exciting ideas and innovations to the global stage. Make your country and your college proud by leaving an impact on society,” he added.

He said Professor Fred McBagonluri, the Founding President of Academic City, had been instrumental in propelling the young University to contend admirably with well-established institutions in the region due to his excellent leadership and guidance.

He reiterated his unwavering commitment to providing unwavering support to the institution, ensuring that it reached new heights.

“Together, we will continue to ascend towards success and have a significant impact on education,” he said.

Prof McBagonluri said the University had fostered and shaped the students to become individuals, who were resilient, compassionate, and intellectually inquisitive.

“We have faith in your capacity to have a significant effect on the world around you,” he said.

  • No jobs for graduates, unemployment in Ghana at an all-time high – Mahama

No jobs for graduates, unemployment in Ghana at an all-time high – Mahama

Former President John Dramani Mahama asserted that Ghana’s unemployment rate had reached its highest point, marking the first occurrence of such a high rate in the nation’s history.

During a speech at the graduation ceremony of the Academic City University College over the weekend, Mr. Mahama pointed out that there were very few job opportunities for graduates, leading to extended periods of unemployment for many of them.

He recalled that during his tenure, there were abundant job opportunities, and for those interested in teaching, automatic postings were provided.

However, the former president noted that the situation has changed significantly, with fewer job openings and reduced retention of individuals after their national service.

In addition, Mr. Mahama expressed concern over the state of the local economy, stating that it was in a state of disarray.

While delivering his speech, he said, “We left the university gates and walked into ready jobs waiting for us. There was automatic posting if you wanted to go into teaching. Many of us were retained and absorbed into workplaces where we had been posted for National Service…Our colleagues who made first class were quickly snapped up by prestigious banks and private corporations like UAC, Lever Brothers, now Unilever, and Standard Chartered Bank as management trainees.”

“There are no ready jobs to absorb you. It may take years for you to find decent employment. There are cases of students who remain unemployed five years after completing university. Unemployment in Ghana is at its highest in history today, estimated at 13%. Our economy is in crisis. The closure of indigenous banks and the banking sector cleanout have led to the loss of several jobs,” John Dramani Mahama stated.

NDC to invest in robust ICT infrastructure – Mahama

The former president and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has pledged that the next NDC government will allocate billions of dollars to foster the development and progress of the country through technology infrastructure investments.

Addressing the graduation ceremony of Academic City University College, Mahama emphasized the paramount importance of technology in shaping the economies of today’s world.

He highlighted the urgency of revolutionizing the country’s education system to meet the demands of the 21st century, where innovation and originality are key driving forces of progress.

Mahama stressed the need to equip the next generation with critical thinking skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities to navigate this digital era successfully.

To achieve their vision for Ghana’s future, the NDC aims to collaborate with the private sector, directing substantial investments towards an integrated ICT infrastructure system, which includes both onshore and offshore super highways and electronic applications.

Moreover, the planned investment will harness the power of 5G technology, boosting communication, commerce, civil liberties, individual expressions, and supporting other national priorities, as outlined by Mr. Mahama.

“The 21st century thrives on the digital revolution in which innovation and originality are the propelling forces of progress and to thrive in this era, our educational system must evolve to equip the next generation with critical thinking skills, creativity, and innovation to solve problems and this is why the NDC in her quest to build the Ghana we want, seeks to partner with the private sector to invest billions of dollars on an integrated ICT infrastructure system including onshore and offshore super highways and electronic applications.”

“The investment will leverage 5G technology to propel communication, commerce, civil liberties and individual expressions while supporting other national priorities,” Mr. Mahama added.

My boss, a man of integrity didn’t need millions of dollars in his house -JM jabs at Cecilia Dapaah

During an event held to honor the 11th anniversary of the passing of John Evans Atta Mills, John Dramani Mahama spoke in glowing terms about his late boss.

He highlighted Mills’ remarkable integrity, humility, and modesty, emphasizing the values that Mills passionately upheld.

In his address to the gathering commemorating the June 24th anniversary of Mills’ passing, Mahama cited examples of significant sums of money kept at home to illustrate just how humble and unassuming Mills was.

“Atta Mills was a man of integrity and all of us can vouch for his integrity, he was a modest man and didn’t need millions of dollars in his house to survive,” he stated to laughter in the crowd.

The topic of a million dollars has been widely discussed in the past two weeks due to a reported incident of theft at the home of a minister.

The former sanitation minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, informed the police that she had lost a significant amount of money, including one million dollars, 300,000 euros, and 350,000 Ghana cedis, allegedly stolen by housemaids.

The two housemaids involved in the theft were apprehended by the police, and they, along with three others who were suspected to be beneficiaries of the stolen money, are facing charges before an Accra Circuit Court.

In the wake of this incident, the minister decided to resign from her ministerial position. She was subsequently arrested but later released on bail by the Special Prosecutor.

The police have completed their investigation and submitted the case docket, which includes details of the reported theft by the minister and her husband, to the Attorney-General for further advice.

Joyce Bawa Mogtari presents sanitary pads to Tamale Girls SHS

Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, Joyce Bawah Mogtari, has presented a five-month supply of sanitary pads to 622 first-year students of the Tamale Girls Senior High School on behalf of the Rosa Foundation-Africa.

The foundation’s sanitary pads initiative aims to improve menstrual hygiene and reduce the risk of infection among young schoolgirls.

Research has shown that some girls abandon school due to their inability to access menstrual products. Mrs Mogtari and her family foundation have pledged to support the 622 students until they complete their three-year programme.

Mrs Mogtari emphasised the importance of menstrual products for young girls’ education and how such donations will reduce the financial burden on families.

She urged the students to be disciplined, studious, and well-prepared for Ghana and Africa’s future.

The Rosa Foundation-Africa was founded to empower and promote the girl child, striving to do for others what they cannot do for themselves.

Over the years, the foundation has provided furniture for schools in the Upper West Region, Eastern and Savanna Regions and is donating sanitary supplies to girls in senior high schools.

Supported by movie producer and actress Kafui Danku, officials of the Rosa Foundation- Africa and school management, Mrs Mogtari said the sanitary pads initiative is expected to positively impact the health, education, and well-being of countless girls and women in Ghana.

  • Stop comparing us to NPP, we are not the same – Mahama

Stop comparing us to NPP, we are not the same – Mahama

Former President, John Dramani Mahama, has refuted the notion that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are the same.

Speaking to the media, the NDC’s presidential candidate for the 2024 elections emphasized the distinctive records of the two parties and urged NPP members to acknowledge the issues their party has caused in Ghana.

He criticized the NPP’s propaganda, stating that not all politicians are alike, and accused them of attempting to create an illusion that regardless of which party comes to power, the outcomes will be the same.

Mahama underscored that the NDC’s accomplishments in various sectors, including education, electricity, water, and digitalization, set them apart from the NPP.

“It is NPP propaganda… they are in their mess and want to draw everybody else into the same mess. You’ve messed the country up. Not all politicians are the same. But they’re happy to push that mantra and make it look like Oh, whether NDC comes or NPP comes, you’re better off staying with us because when NDC comes it will be the same.

“That is the psychology of the propaganda they are doing. We are not the same,” he stated.

Highlighting their contributions to education, Mahama noted that the NDC constructed all public universities in Ghana, while the NPP merely renamed them.

Furthermore, he claimed that the NDC provided more Ghanaians with electricity and water than any previous party, increasing water coverage from 55% to 72% during his tenure.

“We have given more Ghanaians electricity than any party in the history of this country. Rolling started the national electrification program, and the rural electrification program, which has brought Ghana to above 80% electricity coverage.

“In our time we’ve given more Ghanaians water than any party in the history of this country. When proof came into office water coverage was 55%. By the time I left office, water coverage was 72%. We have built all the public universities in this country, NPP hasn’t built one public university, they’re just good at renaming them with their party figures,” he said.

Regarding digitalization, Mahama highlighted his role as the Minister of Communications in initiating the digital revolution in Ghana by dividing posts and telecommunications, establishing Ghana Telecom, and laying optic fiber across the country.

In conclusion, Mahama urged for a fair assessment of each party’s achievements and emphasized that the NDC’s record speaks for itself.

“We started the digital revolution in this country. I was Minister of Communications when we divided posts and telecommunications and created Ghana Telecom and allowed Space Phone and all the mobile operators to come in. We started laying optic fibre in this country, did the Eastern Corridor Optic Fibre. And so that whole digital revolution started in our time.”

  • Hypocrites! Maurice Ampaw descends on Mahama, critics of Cecilia Dapaah

Hypocrites! Maurice Ampaw descends on Mahama, critics of Cecilia Dapaah

Critics of former minister of Sanitation and Water Resources Cecilia Dapaah have been roundly lambasted by attorney Maurice Ampaw for the suspected theft of funds totaling US$1 million, €300,000, and 350,000 Ghana cedis from her private property.

Ampaw claims that people criticizing the former minister are hypocrites because many Ghanaians actually have large quantities of cash stashed away in their residences.

“Today if you ask for money from any Ghanaian, the person will tell you that hthey don’t have money, but the kind of money that people are having in this country…though a lot of people are suffering, most of them have money, they are…loaded.

“The hypocrisy of Ghanaians, you are all hypocrites, the monies that you people have that you have kept in your various homes…but you people are condemning Cecilia Dapaah as if she has committed a crime. If you like let us start with every politician in this country.”

He added “Cecilia Dapaah’s US$1 million is someone’s chicken change money; someone spends much more than that money in less than one month. I was a lawyer for one of the collapsed banks and the owner disclosed to me that his wage bill alone is sixty-six billion Ghana cedis, wage bill alone, what is one million Ghana cedis?”

“Shameless people, because of propaganda even today Mahama is also doing propaganda, You, President Mahama, look at the hypocrisy of President Mahama. President Mahama US$1 million is just a day’s money for you…because today you NDC people don’t have money and you are hungry…. for how many years from 2016 until now? How many years have you been in opposition?

“You people had money from 2008 to 2012, NDC, you made money and kept them in your houses same as Cecilia Dapaah did, some of you, hypocrisy all the NDC people,” he added.

The former minister revealed why she decided to resign in her letter of resignation to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, saying that the problems with the money could have a negative impact on the government.

She did, however, point out that the theft issue in her home has been greatly overstated in many accounts.

“Since yesterday, Friday, July 21, 2023, social and traditional media have been full of stories about a court case involving a theft that took place last year in the home I live with my husband and daughter.

“The stories sought to suggest that I own various huge sums of foreign currencies and millions of Ghana cedis which have been stolen from my home. Whereas I can state emphatically that those figures do not represent correctly what my husband and I reported to the Police, I am very much aware of the import of such stories around someone in my position.

“I am resigning therefore because I do not want this matter to become a preoccupation of government and a hindrance to the work of government at such a crucial time,” parts of the letter read.

Video: Abetifi Hospital started by John Mahama left to rot

The Abetifi hospital, a grand initiative initiated by former President John Mahama and strategically located in Abetifi, the capital of Kwahu East District in the Eastern Region, is unfortunately yet to see progress since its construction was reportedly halted in 2016.

The 120-bed capacity hospital project which was kickstarted in February 2015, as part of President Mahama’s ambitious plan to construct six district hospitals nationwide, was aimed at providing quality healthcare services to underserved regions and to ultimately alleviate the healthcare challenges faced by the people of Kwahu and its environs.

However, progress on the hospital came to an abrupt halt in October 2016, shortly before Mahama’s defeat in the 2016 general elections, with Nana Akufo-Addo emerging victorious.

The new administration, attributed the standstill to alleged cost inflation and corruption under the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC)government. Since then, the hospital has seemingly become an unfortunate symbol of wasted potential and resources. Reports of stolen materials and vandalism by scrap dealers further exacerbate the sorry state of affairs.

The neglect has also sparked occasional public outrage and criticism, with citizens and politicians alike demanding swift action from the government.

Notably, former President Mahama expressed his disappointment at the current administration for neglecting the hospital and wasting taxpayers’ money. He vowed to take up the challenge and see the project to fruition if elected in the 2024 elections.

The government, on the other hand, has given some assurances that it will resume and complete the project soon. The Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Seth Acheampong, recently visited the site and said that the project was part of the government’s agenda 111, which aims to build 111 district hospitals across the country. He said that the government was conducting an audit of the project and would soon award a contract for its completion.

‘Why keep millions of hard currency at home?’ – Mahama questions Cecilia Dapaah

News of an alleged theft involving two house helps of the Sanitation Minister, Cecilia Dapaah, has attracted mixed reactions from the public domain. While some have expressed shock at the act, others have questioned why the Minister would keep such an amount in her home.

Latest to comment on the matter is former President John Dramani Mahama, who has described the incident as scandalous.

“$1m + €300k and millions of GHS in a Ghanaian Minister’s home? Scandalous!! Even if genuinely acquired, why keep millions of hard currency at home? Will @NAkufoAddo ever set a good example for public office holders in his administration?” the former President tweeted.

    Background

Two house helps, 18-year-old Patience Botwe and 30-year-old Sarah Agyei, are currently facing charges before an Accra Circuit Court for their alleged involvement in the theft of significant sums of money and personal belongings belonging to Cecilia Abena Dapaah, Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour.

According to a report by The Chronicle, the thefts, which amount to millions of Ghana Cedis, reportedly took place at the couple’s residence in Abelemkpe, a suburb of Accra, between July and October 2022.

The accused, Patience and Sarah, are facing one count of conspiracy to commit a crime and five counts of stealing, involving amounts of US$1 million, €300,000, and millions of Ghana Cedis.

During the same period, the pair allegedly stole personal effects from Madam Cecilia Abena Dapaah, including assorted clothes valued at GH¢95,000, handbags, perfumes, and jewelry valued at US$95,000.

Further accusations involve Patience acting alone to steal six pieces of Kente cloth worth GHC90,000 and six sets of men’s suits valued at US$3,000, which belonged to the minister’s husband.

The court also charged three additional individuals in connection with the thefts.

Benjamin, a 29-year-old plumber, has been accused of dishonestly receiving GHC180,000, while Kweku Botwe, a 65-year-old trader, faces charges for dishonestly receiving GHC50,000. Additionally, Malik Dauda, a 23-year-old unemployed individual, is alleged to have dishonestly received GHC1 million.

The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has reminisced about his cherished moments with the late playwright Ama Ata Aidoo.

He revealed that Aidoo served as a catalyst, reigniting his passion for writing after his initial book.

Former President Mahama shared these sentiments during the burial service of the renowned writer at the State House forecourt in Accra on July 13, 2023.

Aidoo, a celebrated figure, passed away at the age of 83 on May 31 after a brief illness.

“She is one of our most prolific writers. We have all known her as kids growing up. My closest encounter with her was when I published ‘My First Coup d’état’ [book]. She came for the launch and encouraged me to write again, but I have not been able to [do so].”

You are still in our plans, help us win 2024 election – Mahama to Assin North residents

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has assured the people of Assin North that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will stand firmly by their side if it emerges victorious in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking during the ‘Thank You Tour’ following James Gyakye Quayson‘s success in the by-election on June 27, Mahama acknowledged the historical significance of Assin North in Ghana and expressed unwavering confidence in the NDC’s prospects of reclaiming power in the upcoming elections.

“If history is being written about elections in Ghana, the people of Assin North will have their name written in gold. The victory in this by-election is the begging of our march to recapture power. We are carrying the same momentum to the 2024 general election. I have faith in the Almighty God to grant the NDC victory in the next election.”

Mahama underscored the party’s strong commitment to providing support for Gyakye Quayson, who is currently confronted with legal proceedings regarding his eligibility to participate in the 2020 general elections.

“The Dormaahene who is a respected High Court Judge has appealed to President Akufo-Addo and the Attorney General to discontinue the case because the prosecution is needless. But people vilified him for making such an appeal.

“Whatever they do, for us in the NDC, if the Attorney General discontinues the case, we’ll be okay with that, if he continues the prosecution, our support for Gyakye Quayson will remain resolute. We’ll support him in the morning, afternoon and evening.”

The best candidate to lead NPP is Alan Kyerematen – Mpraeso MP

The Mpraeso Member of Parliament (MP) has expressed support for Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, the former Trade Minister, as the most suitable candidate to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as its flagbearer in the 2024 election.

The MP, Davis Ansah Opoku, emphasized that Kyerematen has made significant sacrifices for the party and deserves recognition and reward.

Opoku further argued that the NPP needs a fresh and charismatic leader to effectively challenge the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) John Dramani Mahama.

He believes that a new face would enhance the party’s chances of defeating their political opponents.

“I am campaigning for Alan Kyeremanten. I strongly believe that he’s the best person to lead. There’s one thing that we all must know in politics; people’s sacrifices must be rewarded.

“In 2007, when this party was at the crossroads in Legon, Alan singlehandedly took a decision and said that he was not going to contest a second round of the election and that he would allow his elder brother, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to contest. That was the highest or the height of a political sacrifice that I’ve seen.

“So for me, I feel that people have served. John Mahama has done eight years at the presidency, Dr. Bawumia has done eight years at the presidency and there’s a need for a new face for Ghanaians.

“For me, I believe that if the NPP were to go into the next election with a new face against John Mahama who has served eight years at the presidency, we’ll be able to defeat John Mahama easily,” he said on JoyNews’ AM show on Tuesday.

  • Whether NPP likes it or not, Mahama will win election 2024- Duffuor

Whether NPP likes it or not, Mahama will win election 2024- Duffuor

Former Finance Minister and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential hopeful, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor has made a bold declaration, stating that former President John Dramani Mahama will emerge victorious in the upcoming 2024 elections, regardless of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) stance.

Addressing a gathering at Assin North, Dr Duffuor noted that the New Patriotic Party has not adequately prioritised the needs and welfare of the ordinary Ghanaian.

He, therefore, entreated the electorates to ensure that the New Patriotic Party is ousted in the 2024 elections and former President John Dramani Mahama is elected into office.

“Whether the NPP likes it or not, John Mahama will win the election 2024,” he said.

He noted that the NPP has plunged the country into economic hardships, and “hunger.”

Ghana’s political landscape is characterised by vibrant competition between two major political parties, namely the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Both parties have emerged as the dominant political parties in Ghana. They have consistently garnered significant electoral support and have alternated in power since the country’s transition to multi-party democracy in the early 1990s.

Both parties are optimistic about a win in the upcoming elections scheduled for December 2024.

Dr Duffuor while addressing the gathering asked them not to allow the NPP to intimidate them, rather, urged them to exercise their franchise without fear and in favor of the NDC, since the latter will ensure that the lives of Ghanaians improve significantly.

  • Akufo-Addo criticises Mahama over attack on Judiciary

Akufo-Addo criticises Mahama over attack on Judiciary

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has chastised former President John Dramani Mahama during the New Patriotic Party’s final rally ahead of the June 27 by-election in Assin North, for allegedly attacking the judiciary.

Mahama, who had also addressed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) final rally in Gangan made comments to the effect that the courts had been politicized and that led to the ouster of NDC’s James Gyakye Quayson as Member of Parliament, which ouster led to the by-election.

Akufo-Addo blasted Mahama for the comments describing it as unfortunate but unsurprising for a man who ever said that ‘Ghanaians are forgetful.’

The president referred to the case of NPP MP Adamu Dramani Sakande who was jailed during Mahama’s presidency over a dual citizenship case, a similar incident to what Quayson is facing in an Accra High Court.

“John Mahama says if not for politics, what the courts have said of Mr. Quayson will not be. Essentially that the Supreme Court has been politicized. Ghanaians easily forget and that is why he said that.

“What happened to Adamu Dramani Sakande during his presidency, he seems to have forgotten. It is the exact same thing that has befallen Quayson.

“Was it politics that led to Sakande’s jailing during his presidency? Why is he relating it to that now, let us be truthful, we should be truthful, people should stop lying to people in the villages,” he jabbed.

He drummed the advantages of choosing the NPP’s Charles Opoku over Quayson stressing that the constituency needs someone from the ruling party and not a lawmaker who could potentially be in jail or who would be frequenting the courts during his tenure.

“Don’t elect someone who will be frequenting the courts – Appeal, Supreme, High Courts, that is not what you need. I came to appeal to you to elect a lawmaker who can join government to continue the work government is executing in Assin North.

“Ghanaians are forgetful, does such a person think well of Ghanaians? We are not a forgetful people. What happened to Sakande, it is on the same path Quayson is traveling. It is not for me to say.

“The NPP is not interested in intimidating or scaring him, it is the laws that are after him, it is not me scaring him, it is the laws. If the laws come after you, it is not Nana Addo, it is the law,” Akufo-Addo stressed stating that he has never sought to influence the courts in his time in office.

The by-election has attracted a lot of political activity in the past few weeks. Campaigns ended on June 25 ahead of the vote.

Former president John Dramani Mahama has urged voters in Assin North to strongly support James Gyakye Quayson in the upcoming by-election, despite his recent removal from Parliament through a Supreme Court ruling.

Mahama emphasized that the June 27 by-election would serve as a means to demonstrate that the ruling New Patriotic Party, the courts, and any other parties involved had unjustly invalidated the legitimate election of Quayson as the representative for the constituency.

“They (the government) used dirty politics and intimidation, as well as hatred in a bid to remove him and attempt to remove him,” Mahama told supporters at Gangan during the final rally of the NDC on June 25.

“We are going to show the elephant (party), the courts and other conspirators that in 2020 we knew who we wanted and voted for James Gyakye Quayson as MP,” he said to applause.

Gyakye Quayson, Mahama continued: “lived in Canada comfortably and routinely comes home to support his people before deciding to return to his country and serve his people.”

He insisted that Quayson had validly renounced his Canadian citizenship yet the government continued to use underhand tactics with the sole aim of removing him to boost their numbers through the courts.

“He has been through threats, they have infiltrated the courts with politics, today, in Ghana’s history we have a time MPs’ election are contested in court, but such people remain in parliament till case is decided but only him, he has faced injunctions whiles his case is being heard. It has never happened before but just because of politics,” Mahama lamented.

The by-election has attracted a lot of political activity in the past few weeks. Campaigns ended on June 25 ahead of the vote.

President Akufo-Addo led the New Patriotic Party’s final rally in the constituency campaigning for the candidacy of Charles Opoku who according to a poll is leading marginally.

Akufo-Addo blasts Mahama over his politicised Judiciary comments

During the New Patriotic Party’s final rally before the June 27 by-election in Assin North, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo engaged in a spirited exchange with his predecessor, John Dramani Mahama.

Mahama, who had previously spoken at the National Democratic Congress (NDC) final rally in Gangan, expressed his concerns about the politicization of the courts, which resulted in the removal of James Gyakye Quayson from his position as a Member of Parliament.

This removal subsequently necessitated the by-election.

Let’s fight against corruption, it hinders economic development – Mahama to Africans

Africans in the public and private sectors have been urged by former president, John Dramani Mahama to tackle corruption.

Mr. Mahama described corruption as an economic malady that hinders development.

He raised concerns about graft, which he said thrives due to the layered irresponsibility of institutions and state actors who are required to fight it.

The former president made these comments when he was the Special Guest at the 53rd Annual Conference of the Nigeria Institution of Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) under the theme, “Asset Valuation as a Global Anti-Corruption Tool: The Nigeria Experience.”

“Because corruption is a global challenge, its scope and seriousness have led to calls for a worldwide response and cooperation in the fight against it. Corruption is an economic malady. Mr Chairman, corruption hinders economic development, diverts investments from infrastructure, institutions, and social services, and undermines efforts to achieve other country-specific development goals and targets. And we all know why. Graft thrives due to the layered irresponsibility of institutions and state actors that must fight it. Whichever way you visualise it, corruption must be fought whether it occurs in the public or private sector”.

He highlighted discretionary power, economic rent, strong legal system as elements required to fight corruption.

“There are at least three elements required for corruption to occur. First, someone must have discretionary power, which includes the ability to influence the formulation of regulations and administer them. Second, economic rent must be associated with discretionary power, primarily when higher rents are related to the misuse of discretionary power. Third, when the governance or legal system offers a sufficiently low probability of detection or sanction for wrongdoing,” the flagbearer of NDC posited.

According to him, corruption scares investors away from investing in a country.

“Corruption also retards growth because bribes paid by investors to secure investment licenses, including building permits, increase the cost of doing business and, consequently, reduces the incentive to invest in a country. Corruption also has adverse effects on productivity. If the permits and licenses needed by innovators or new producers are obtained by paying bribes, that could impede the entry of new goods or technology onto the markets of many economies,” he asserted.

Mr. Mahama advised the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers to champion efforts to enhance data availability.

“Finally, the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers must champion efforts to enhance real-time data availability, improve technology adoption for land and real estate services online, and formulate relevant legislation for property management,” he urged.

Muntaka expresses ambition for presidency without resorting to violence or harm

Member of Parliament for the Asawase, Ibrahim Muntaka Mubarak, has stated his ambition of becoming the president of the Republic of Ghana.

Speaking in an interview on JoyNews, on Tuesday, June 20, 2023, the former minority chief whip said that he has all the competencies to lead the country, which is proven by his track record.

He added that every politician must aspire for top positions and should not limit themselves.

“You can’t be a politician and say that as for me the top-notch, I never want it in my life. But it is not something that I’m going to kill somebody to become.

“I have been a politician. I have served very well; I have all the credentials that it takes. I have distinguished myself to the best that I can and I want to believe that if the opportunity avails itself, why not? I will. I will be a contender and I will do that forcefully,” he said.

Asked about the possibility of becoming the ruling mate of the presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, the MP said that the best choice would be a purely Akan person.

He explained that even though he has lived in the Ashanti Region all his life if the running mate of Mahama is to be from the region, the person must be an Akan.
