2026 NPP Flagbearer race: Dr Bawumia leads Ken Agyapong in Nyhiaeso constituency

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has led the former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, in the number of votes cast by delegates in Nhyiaeso during the just-ended New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primary.

The NPP’s internal election conducted is to select a candidate to represent the party in the 2028 general elections . As such, party supporters and observers have been spotted at designated polling centers awaiting the outcome of the tightly contested primaries.

More than 300 polling centres nationwide were set up for the presidential primaries with over 211,000 delegates participating in the expected to vote.

Speaking to the media,  Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Dr Stephen Amoah has expressed shock over the development. According to Stephen Amoah, he expected Mr Agyapong to earn a comfortable victory, due to the investments made by his campaign team.

“It’s very surprising because I thought Kennedy was going to win by 60%,” Dr Amoah said.

The lawmaker said the strong presence and intensive campaign activities of the Ken Campaign in the area had created expectations of a different result, adding that the outcome fell short of what many people on the ground had predicted.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics, Mussa Dankwah has predicted Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to win 14 out of the 16 regions.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, January 28, he noted that Dr. Bawumia would sweep massive votes in the party’s stronghold, the Ashanti Region.

He added, “Yes, [Bawumia will win in 14 regions out of 16 regions].“All the areas we have looked at are pointing in one direction, and that direction is that Bawumia will win this Saturday’s election one-touch.

According to him, “Based on our model, his lowest score will be 54 percent, which is the 57 percent we are giving him minus the three percent margin of error, or he could get up to 60 percent”.The Executive Director of Global InfoAnalytics emphasised that the data is consistent across all regions. “I am very confident in Bawumia’s numbers because they are more stable in terms of variability. There is no noise in the data,” he added.

Last year, the National Tracking Poll by Global InfoAnalytics disclosed that 56 per cent of voters and 72 per cent of committed NPP delegates want former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as their flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.

According to the poll, 28 per cent of voters are rooting for former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, with 6 per cent each for Dr Bryan Acheampong and Dr Yaw Osei-Adutwum, and 4 per cent supporting Kwabena Agyapong.

Among NPP delegates, 19 per cent want Kennedy Agyapong, while Dr Bryan Acheampong records 4 per cent, Dr Osei-Adutwum 3 per cent, and Kwabena Agyapong 1 per cent.

The poll was conducted between December 1 and December 21 across all 16 regions of the country. Methods used include a combination of web-based, telephone, and face-to-face interviews.

In October 2025, the Pan-African civil society organisation Sanity Africa, which predicted the victory of Bernard Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the tightly contested Akwatia by-election, released its Phase Two survey on the NPP presidential primaries.

According to the organisation’s survey, there has been a shift in the landscape as the party gears up towards the January 2026 primaries.

The abridged October report suggests that Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, popularly known as Ken, has strengthened his lead among NPP delegates, commanding 53.1% of voting intentions, representing a 1.7 percentage-point increase from the Phase One survey conducted in July.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (DMB) trails with 39.0%, indicating a 3.2-point drop. Behind them are Dr Bryan Acheampong at 5.0% (up 1.9 points), Dr Yaw Osei-Adutwum at 2.0% (down 1.0 point), and Ing. Kwabena A. Agyepong at 0.9% (rising from 0.3%).

The survey, carried out between July and October 2025, sampled 15,000 delegates from an estimated 218,000 in the expanded voter album across all 276 constituencies.

It boasts a 99% confidence level with a ±5% margin of error. At the regional level, Ken Agyapong sits atop as the leading candidate in 10 out of Ghana’s 16 regions, including strongholds such as Ashanti (54.8%), Central (69.0%), and Eastern (54.8%).

His biggest contender, Dr Bawumia, on the other hand, still holds his lead in the northern sector, with an advantage in the remaining six regions. He leads in the North East (70.0%) and Upper West (60.2%). Competitive races are unfolding in Bono East, Savannah, and Upper East, where margins remain slim.

Notable shifts include Dr Bawumia widening his lead in the North East Region from 51.6% to 70.0%, while Ken strengthened his position in Volta (50.8%) and Bono (53.0%).

Dr Bryan Acheampong registered significant gains in his home region of Eastern, rising to 21.7%. Sanity Africa noted that these shifts reflect evolving delegate sentiments influenced by campaign strategies and regional dynamics.

The organisation emphasised that while Ken Agyapong currently has the upper hand, the contest remains fluid. Endorsements, messaging, and campaign strategies, it said, are expected to play critical roles in shaping the outcome.

With Phase Three of the survey scheduled for release in January 2026, Sanity Africa concluded that Ken may be the one to beat, but the race is far from over.

However, the Global InfoAnalytics tracking poll named Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the people’s preferred candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 general election, ahead of his closest contender, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The poll suggests that 57% of voters prefer Dr Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate, while 29% picked Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The other contenders—former Minister of Education Dr Yaw Osei-Adutwum (6%), Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr Bryan Acheampong (5%), and former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong (3%)—trailed behind.

In the critical swing regions of Greater Accra, Central, and Western, Dr Bawumia also led decisively with 57%, followed by Kennedy Agyapong at 32%. Dr Adutwum and Dr Acheampong each secured 4%, while Kwabena Agyapong obtained 3%.

The survey further indicated that in a potential runoff between Dr Bawumia and Kennedy Agyapong, Dr Bawumia would extend his lead with 62% against Agyapong’s 38%.

I have no reason to criticise Mahama’s 10-month-old government – Ken Agyapong

New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, business mogul and former Assin Central MP,  Kennedy Agyapong, has responded to purported critics concerning his seeming silence since the Mahama led administration took power.

Rumours began to swirl within political circles that the straight talking NPP flagbearer hopeful could be in bed with the Mahama administration as he seeks payments for government contracts he may have been handed in the recent past NPP administration,

Speaking during an interview on Spear FM, Damongo, Ken Agyapong stated emphatically that he won’t criticise Mahama and the government because he has no reason to do so.

According to him, he has no basis to criticise President Mahama and his administration that is barely 10 months citing the need for fairness. He said,

“I have heard they are saying I’m not attacking Mahama because government owes me and I want to be paid that is why I’m not attacking Mahama’s government. Ten months in government and what do you expect Mahama to do that you want me to criticise him? We have to be fair,” Kennedy Agyapong said.

“Ten months, even if it was cassava you planted, it would not have been ready for harvesting”.

While he acknowledge the need to call a spade a spade, he however, highlighted his commitment to focus on the primaries set for January 2026.

“I won’t criticise Mahama, I’m focusing on my primaries – Ken Agyapong. I’m not saying that when there is something wrong we should not say, but me, I’m focusing on my primaries,” he emphasised.

Meanwhile, Kennedy Agyapong, picked the first spot on the party’s just-concluded ballot.

The exercise, conducted on Friday, October 10, was held to determine the order of names on the ballot paper ahead of the presidential election scheduled for January 31, 2026.

So far, Kwabena Agyepong, former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former MP for Assin Central Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong, had been cleared to campaign.

Dr. Bryan Acheampong picked the second position, while Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia took the third position. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyepong took the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.

Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, officially filed his nomination forms on Tuesday, August 26.

Party executives received the nomination forms from former Assin Central MP and presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong on Wednesday, August 27. Former Food and Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong also filed his nomination forms.

In a separate development, Global Info Analytics late September,  predicted that Dr Bawumia, would lead in the primaries against his competitors, particularly Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

However, in barely two weeks, the Pan-African civil society organisation, Sanity Africa, which predicted the victory of Bernard Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the tightly contested Akwatia by-election, has released its Phase Two survey on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries.

According to the organisation’s recent survey, there has been a shift in the landscape as the party gears up towards the January 2026 primaries.

The results of the survey carried out between July and October 2025 came from a sample of 15,000 delegates from an estimated 218,000 in the expanded voter album across all 276 constituencies.

It boasts a 99% confidence level with a ±5% margin of error. At the regional level, Ken Agyapong sits atop as a leading candidate in ten regions out of Ghana’s 16, including strongholds such as Ashanti (54.8%), Central (69.0%), and Eastern (54.8%).

His biggest contender, Dr Bawumia, on the other hand, still holds his lead in the Northern sector, thus with an advantage in the rest of the six regions. He leads in the North East (70.0%) and Upper West (60.2%). Competitive races are unfolding in Bono East, Savannah, and Upper East, where margins remain slim.

Flagbearer aspirant for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has picked the first spot on the party’s just concluded ballot.

The exercise conducted today, Friday, October 10, was to determine who takes which number on the ballot paper ahead of the presidential election on January 31, 2026.

So far, Kwabena Agyepong, former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former MP for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and former Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, have been cleared to campaign.

Dr Bryan Acheampong picked the second position, and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia took the third position. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyepong the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
Former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, officially filed his nomination forms on Tuesday, August 26.

Party executives received the nomination forms from former Assin Central MP and presidential hopeful Kennedy Ohene Agyapong on Wednesday, August 27. Former Food and Agric Minister Bryan Acheampong has also filed his nomination forms.

In the meantime, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has received strong backing from 268 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), who paid him a visit in June to pledge their support.

Former Energy Minister and running mate of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 presidential candidate, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has decided to throw his weight behind Dr Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s presidential primaries in 2026.

In an interview on Asempa FM on August 26, the former minister noted that he remains grateful to the former Vice President who decided to make him his running mate despite the many individuals who advised him to do otherwise.

According to Dr Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as Napo, Dr Bawumia was engaged countless times by some bigwigs in the party to pick someone else to be his running mate.“I am not ungrateful. Look at this big party and upon all the people who were praying for the running mate slot, he ignored all of them and made me his running mate.”

“I know it was a difficult situation, but a lot of people don’t know. Some bigwigs in the party went to Dr Bawumia to tell him not to make me the running mate but he ignored them. There are some names that if I mentioned, you would be shocked. Some even took him to offices to advise him against me but still he chose me,” he remarked.

He thus said; “So, I cannot be ungrateful to him… For those who stood in the flagbearership contest, everyone knows Kennedy Agyapong is my friend, but I am still for Bawumia.”

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made room for new additions to its already approximately 220,000 delegates who are eligible to vote in its presidential primaries slated for Saturday, January 31, next year.

In a statement dated August 26, signed and shared by the Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee, Williams Yamoah, the party announced that registration has been opened for an additional 60,000 new delegates, which include nineteen new categories of people.

This directive follows reforms adopted at the party’s National Annual Delegates Conference held in Accra on Saturday, July 19.
The statement explained: “In accordance with Article 13(1)(11) of the Constitution of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and pursuant to the motion on transitional provisions adopted at the National Annual Delegates Conference held in Accra on Saturday, July 19, 2025, the following new categories of Party officials and dignitaries have been included in the upcoming Presidential Primary voter register.”

The updated voter register, also known as the party album, will now include several new categories of officials and dignitaries. These are all former regional and constituency executives, members of the National Council of Elders, 30 members of the National Council of Patrons, all past national officers, former party-card-bearing MPs and parliamentary candidates, as well as former party-card-bearing ministers and deputy ministers.

Other groups added to the list are external branch executives, former external branch executives, and key members of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), including presidents of recognised institutions, the National TESCON Coordinator, regional coordinators, and one TESCON patron from each institution.

Additionally, 10 members from each Regional Council of Elders, 10 patrons from each region, and five members and patrons from each constituency have also been included.

The statement directed that “all officers that fall under the categories above are requested to register their names with their respective organisational structures, including the National Secretariat, Regions, Constituencies and External Branches, as applicable, with immediate effect.”

To make the registration process easier, the statement clarified that a digital link would be circulated to External Branch Executives for online registration. All other qualified members were advised to liaise with their respective regions and constituencies to register.

However, the forms are to be accessed via the party’s official website.“The registration form may be downloaded from the Party’s official website. For ease of reference, a sample copy is hereby attached,” excerpts of the statement read.

The statement further warned that the registration was strictly for the aforementioned categories of people, with a deadline set for Friday, September 19.

“The deadline for registration is Friday, September 19, 2025. Please be advised that this registration exercise is exclusively open to officers and members who meet the aforementioned criteria. The Presidential Elections Committee shall undertake a comprehensive verification and validation of the Party’s album to ensure that only an authentic and credible register is used for the conduct of the presidential election,” the party cautioned, while expressing confidence in members’ cooperation.

“We count on your usual cooperation and adherence to this directive in furtherance of the Party’s commitment to fairness, inclusiveness, and transparency.”

The NPP is on a journey of reset, reinforcement, and healing following its historic defeat in the 2024 elections. Dr. Bawumia lost the 2024 presidential election, with John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing 6,328,397 valid votes, representing 56.55%, against Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61%.

Since the beginning of this year, the party has undertaken several reforms to position itself strongly against its main opponent, the NDC, and to recapture power.

Among these reforms is the abolition of the electoral college in favour of a broader base of delegates. The party has also added 19 new delegate categories and granted amnesty to suspended members. The party’s suspended members have been reinstated, and all charges against those facing the disciplinary committee have been dropped.

the National Council decided during an emergency meeting held on July 25. In a statement dated August 16 and signed by the Acting National Chairman of the Party, Mr. Danquah Smith Buttey, members were informed that, as part of measures to ensure unity and cooperation, all banned members had been given the right to return.

“This measure reflects the Party’s unwavering commitment to fostering internal cohesion, strengthening solidarity, and preparing collectively for the political tasks ahead. I write to inform you that the National Council, at its Emergency Meeting held on Friday, July 25, 2025, resolved, in the interest of unity and reconciliation, to grant a General Amnesty to all Party members who have been suspended or whose disciplinary cases are currently pending before the appropriate disciplinary bodies,” parts of the statement read.

The party further urged all relevant bodies, including Regional and Constituency Executive Committees, to reinstate suspended members in accordance with laid-down rules and guiding principles.

“We hereby serve notice that this directive lifts all such suspensions and nullifies any ongoing proceedings against affected members,” the statement added.

However, the party clarified that this recall does not apply to members who willfully forfeited their membership. In cases where such individuals wish to return, they are required to submit a formal reinstatement request to the party’s secretariat. Upon acceptance, a two-year ban will be imposed, preventing them from contesting in any internal elections.

  • Ken Agyapong gets US Judge to reduce defamation fine in favour of Anas from $18m to $500

Ken Agyapong gets US Judge to reduce defamation fine in favour of Anas from $18m to $500

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has succeeded in getting the Superior Court of New Jersey to significantly slash the damages suggested by the jury in favour of investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas, in a defamation case.

An American jury found Kennedy Agyapong guilty of maliciously defaming the character of the journalist. Consequent to the finding by the jury, an amount of $18M was awarded against Kennedy Agyapong.

Following the award, Kennedy Agyapong filed a motion for remittitur, asking the judge to reduce the amount awarded against him.

In a press statement, Anas’ Tigereyepi noted that in court today, the court granted Kennedy Agyapong’s motion for remittitur and reduced the initial award to $500.

“This means that, while the judge held that Kennedy Agyapong had defamed me, in his reasoning, the award against Kennedy Agyapong by the jury was excessive,” the statement added.

In response to the slash in damages awarded, Anas noted that “this fight has not been about the money, but rather, fight for truth and justice.”

“I am happy that not a single allegation was proven against me in court when Kennedy Agyapong was given full opportunity to substantiate.

“I will continue in my relentless fight against corruption and, in doing that, continue to name, shame, and jail,” he added.

  • It’s not just about the money, but a victory for press freedom – Anas on Ken Agyapong defamation case

It’s not just about the money, but a victory for press freedom – Anas on Ken Agyapong defamation case

Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas has expressed optimism about receiving the $18 million (£14 million) awarded to him in a defamation lawsuit against Ghanaian MP Kennedy Agyapong. However, he emphasized that the real victory lies in the precedent set by the ruling.

The lawsuit stemmed from Agyapong’s public accusations, branding Anas a “criminal” following his exposé on corruption in Ghanaian and international football. Although Anas initially lost the case in Ghana, he pursued legal action in the United States—where Agyapong owns assets—and secured a favorable judgment.

“The bigger impact for me is not the money but the fact that young journalists are encouraged [to hold the powerful to account] no matter how big you are [as] a politician”, Anas told the BBC.

During the trial, the court was informed that Agyapong had made several allegations against Anas on a podcast, including calling him a “criminal” and accusing him of involvement in the murder of journalist Ahmed Suale.

Speaking to the BBC, Anas expressed his continued grief over Suale’s death. While acknowledging the recent arrest of a suspect, he remains convinced that others responsible for the crime are still at large.

“From time to time I go to where Ahmed was shot, and I go to have my own quiet time. I go to his grave.

“It encourages me. When Ahmed was alive he asked me one day: ‘Boss, I want [to] assure you [that] one day if you should die, I would continue with the good work that you do’. I didn’t know it was going to be the reverse because, all along… I was the one who was the target.”

Anas has been scathing in his criticism of Ghana’s legal system, telling the BBC he believes “many” members of the judiciary “are doing nothing but tilting the scale of justice in favour of the wrong one”.

Anas Aremeyaw Anas pursued his defamation case against MP Kennedy Agyapong in New Jersey, citing the politician’s presence in the state during his appearance on the Daddy Fred Show podcast, as outlined in court documents.

Earlier this month, an eight-member jury in Essex County Superior Court unanimously ruled in favor of Anas, holding Agyapong liable for defamation. The court awarded the investigative journalist $18 million in damages, including $8 million in punitive compensation.

“I feel very happy, I think that it’s a vindication of what I have always preached. This goes a long way to encourage African journalists across the continent there’s a need for us to be resilient. There’s a need for us to have a stomach to take the heat,” Anas told the BBC.
Now that the court has ordered Agyapong to pay damages, the journalist says he is confident the funds will be transferred because his legal team’s “due diligence” had assessed the value of property and businesses owned by the MP before bringing the case.

“I cannot be 100% certain, but I know that my legal team has done some work and they have a plan,” he adds.

Anas says that, even though his case was won in the US, it should serve as a wake-up call to the rich and powerful that African journalists can and will hold them to account.

“We also have the capacity to stand toe-to-toe with you. Whilst we are patient, whilst we are honest, our day will definitely come.”

I will continue to fight and defend the truth – Ken Agyapong tells supporters amid $18m court case

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has assured his supporters that he remains steadfast in his advocacy despite a U.S. court ruling ordering him to pay $18 million in damages to investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas for defamation.

Addressing a crowd at his campaign office in Shiashie upon his return to Ghana, Mr Agyapong expressed gratitude for the unwavering support he has received and urged his followers to remain calm as he prepares to formally respond to the ruling.

“I want to take this opportunity to say a very big thank you for the wonderful welcome you have given me and my wife. This will inspire me to continue doing what I do—speaking for the voiceless,” he stated.

Despite the court’s decision, Mr Agyapong maintained his defiance, emphasizing that his experiences have only strengthened his determination to champion justice and truth.

“Nobody should worry. Anyone who speaks the truth and stands for the voiceless will face challenges. But through this ordeal, I have become a better person, and I will continue to fight and defend the truth,” he reassured his supporters.

Mr Agyapong reaffirmed his commitment to his advocacy, insisting that legal battles would not deter him. He promised to provide further clarification on the ruling at an appropriate time while urging his followers to stay resolute.

Adum fire: Ken Agyapong’s team visits scene to assess damage

Former Assin MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has dispatched a team to Adum in the Ashanti Region to assess the damage caused by a recent fire outbreak that destroyed several trading shops.

The team’s mission is to evaluate the extent of losses and provide immediate assistance to affected traders.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 25, Agyapong’s spokesperson, Kwaku Amoh-Oarteh, Esq., reaffirmed the former MP’s commitment to supporting the victims.

He assured traders that they would not be left to deal with the aftermath alone.

The team, which includes representatives from Agyapong’s office and other key stakeholders, will interact with traders, document their losses, and explore ways to provide relief. Their findings will also inform strategies to prevent similar disasters in the future.

“As a businessman, he understands the immense effort required to build the long hours, the sacrifices, and the hopes for a better future. To see it all taken away in an instant is painful beyond words. He feels your pain and shares in your frustration,” the statement emphasized.

Agyapong also called on the Ghana National Fire Service, the Police, and other relevant agencies to enhance market safety protocols, improve emergency access, and enforce stricter fire prevention measures.

He further assured that upon his return to Ghana, he would personally visit the affected market, engage with traders, and discuss the best way forward to help them rebuild.

  • Ken Agyapong’s mistrial application was dismissed by the court – Anas’ legal team

Ken Agyapong’s mistrial application was dismissed by the court – Anas’ legal team

A U.S. court has rejected an application for a mistrial filed by Kennedy Agyapong’s legal team after the jury delivered its verdict in the defamation lawsuit initiated by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

According to Evans Selasi Adika, a lawyer representing Anas, Agyapong’s attorneys have made two post-verdict applications—one for remittitur and another for a mistrial—both of which have been denied.

The first motion, filed immediately after the verdict on Thursday, March 13, aimed to reduce the $18 million in damages awarded to Anas, arguing that the amount was excessive and “shocked the judicial conscience.” However, the presiding judge ruled that the issue had not been properly presented before the court.

“On the 18th, when the jury had other business related to this case, opposing counsel made a motion for a mistrial, which was firmly denied by the court,” Adika stated during an interview on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday, March 22.

The court’s decision follows an earlier ruling by the Superior Court of New Jersey, which awarded $18 million in damages to Anas after finding that Agyapong and social media commentator Frederick Asamoah had engaged in malicious defamation.

Adika also clarified that while the case is not currently on appeal, the formal judgment has yet to be documented in writing. However, he emphasized that any further legal action must follow due process.

“Despite counsel’s misgivings about what transpired in court, his recourse lies in following the rules and filing the necessary post-trial motions, as instructed by the judge,” he explained.

When asked whether there was any possibility of overturning the jury’s verdict or the damages awarded, Adika was clear:

“As we stand, we don’t have a next court date. The trial is over, subject to anyone filing a post-trial motion within the framework of the law.”

  • Ken Agyapong part of NPP’s is partly to be blamed for NPP’s defeat – UG political scientist

Ken Agyapong part of NPP’s is partly to be blamed for NPP’s defeat – UG political scientist

Political Scientist at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah Asante, has said that Ken Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin Central, played a role in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the recent elections.

Speaking on Neat FM, he explained that Ken Agyapong’s comments during the NPP’s presidential primaries were used by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to weaken the NPP’s campaign, contributing to their defeat.

“During the NPP presidential primary, Ken Agyapong launched a series of scathing attacks on Dr. Bawumia, the incumbent Vice President and his competitor. He highlighted many issues he found wrong with the government. While he is known for his candour, in politics, such criticisms, if not managed carefully, can arm opponents.

His comments became a weapon for the NDC in the recent elections. For instance, he claimed that the NPP had already lost the election in 2022 when the government implemented haircuts on investments. He also stated that during his tours across the country, he did not see factories established under the much-touted ‘One District, One Factory’ (1D1F) program. Additionally, he accused the government of looting state resources with impunity and criticized the drastic depreciation of the Cedi from 1$ to GH¢4.00 to 1$ to GH¢16.00,” Dr. Asah Asante noted.

He added that his earlier caution to the contestants to be mindful of their utterances was ignored.

“I remember cautioning that the NPP presidential primary was an internal affair, and the candidates needed to be mindful of their remarks to avoid damaging their own party after the contest. Unfortunately, my advice was not heeded. After Dr. Bawumia emerged as the winner, Ken Agyapong could not fully support his campaign because of the numerous critical statements he had made against him. These statements were later exploited by the opposition to campaign against the government, ultimately leading to the party’s defeat,” Dr. Asah Asante explained.

The NPP suffered its worst defeat in elections since the Fourth Republic in the general elections held on December 7, 2024.

The Electoral Commission, on December 9, 2024, declared John Dramani Mahama the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election.

Based on results declared from 267 constituencies, excluding nine constituencies, Mr. Mahama garnered 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of valid votes cast, to defeat the current Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who secured 4,657,304 votes, representing 41.61% of valid votes cast.

The declaration was based on results from 267 constituencies, excluding nine constituencies where results were still outstanding.

However, the Electoral Commission noted that even if all the votes from these nine constituencies were allocated to Dr. Bawumia, it would not significantly change the outcome in his favor.

Vote for Bawumia and I will crack down on Chinese wholesale businesses – Kennedy Agyapong vows

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has pledged to take firm action against Chinese businesses operating in Ghana’s retail sector should the New Patriotic Party (NPP) secure victory in the upcoming December 2024 elections.

He made this statement while rallying support for NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia during a campaign event on Wednesday, September 18, 2024.

Agyapong’s promise is a response to the increasing concerns raised by local traders about foreign influence in the Ghanaian market. Many local businesses have struggled to compete with foreign retailers, particularly Chinese-owned businesses, leading to frustration within the local trading community.

The Assin Central MP expressed his commitment to enforcing the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act, which reserves the retail sector for Ghanaians.

“What the Chinese are expected to do is wholesaling and not engage in the commercial or retail market. We won’t allow them to do it,” Agyapong stated.

Agyapong urged market women and local traders to vote for Bawumia, promising that the NPP would protect local businesses and improve their livelihoods.

He emphasised that Chinese nationals would be restricted to wholesale operations only, with retail remaining exclusively for Ghanaians.

He also advised Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, against opposing his stance in the future should the NPP win power in the December 2024 elections.

“And as I have said before, I will walk my talk, so Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh will be courageous because once I do it, the media will misreport my deeds and cause panic amongst the NPP. We have to empower our own citizens,” he added.

The NPP has outlined several policies to support local businesses if it wins the 2024 elections. Dr. Bawumia has proposed the establishment of an SME Bank to provide targeted financial support to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which employ over 80% of Ghanaians.

Other proposals include a flat-rate tax system to simplify taxation for all income levels and create a business-friendly environment aimed at fostering economic growth.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has expressed his frustration with the residents of Kintampo North during a campaign event in the Bono East Region.

In a viral video from the event, Agyapong criticized the community for what he perceived as their lack of appreciation for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Agyapong accused the people of repeatedly voting for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), despite the efforts and contributions of the NPP to the constituency’s development.

He further noted that, as the Board Chairman of Ghana National Gas Company, he has the authority to approve the construction of an AstroTurf for the area but has chosen not to due to their continued support for the NDC.

“If you don’t vote for us and you ask us for development… I’m the chairman of Ghana Gas and I can give the approval for you to get the AstroTurf but I will not do it because you always vote against us.

“You take all the things in the world, but you don’t vote for us. So, I’m not bringing it (the AstroTurf) to you… we gave you a Controller-General but you were not pleased, we gave you the Director General of Immigration, and you were not pleased. What again should we give you for you to be grateful?” he asked in Twi.

He added, “We have to tell you the truth, we must not fear human beings. You also ask us for things and we do them for you but after that, you say you are members of the NDC. You vote for the NDC and no development comes here.”

In a post on X, Mr Agyapong noted that only forgiveness will give the ruling party an opportunity to break the 8-year governance cycle and allow the NPP govern for another four years.

“Our disagreements are not a license to give power to the NDC. Let’s apologize to all we have offended if we want to break the 8. The road to NPP victory… I advocate humility and forgiveness,” he wrote on July 9, 2024.

Speaking on behalf of the other failed presidential aspirants at the official outdooring ceremony of running mate Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, he acknowledged that some of the leaders have offended the grassroots.

“I want to admonish the party leaders who have offended the party members and generated anger at our grassroots to go back and apologize to them.

“You have to respect them. I am not asking you to go and give them money but respecting them alone will change their minds. When you get the opportunity to be a leader, you have a responsibility to unite your people and lead them with respect.

“The Bible says if you want to be a leader, you must first be a servant of the people. Being elected to lead the party does not mean you will lord yourselves over the people.

“Some of the leaders were arrogant and disrespectful to you, but today they have come before you. We should learn from this and go house to house to apologize to those we have offended, and with unity, we will break the eight-year jinx.”

In a recent interview, Mr Agyapong discussed the unique challenges faced by returnees and emphasized the necessity of perseverance and strategic thinking to achieve success.

Agyapong acknowledged the resistance that returnees often encounter when trying to implement progressive ideas in Ghana. He highlighted the importance of taking control of one’s destiny and remaining resolute in the face of opposition.

“Now let me tell you, I am a politician, and I have always been hiding it, but let me tell you. Take your destiny into your own hands, be a different woman, and you will succeed,” he advised.

“If you want to succeed, be happy that we have a bunch of ignorant people in this country; take advantage of it. In a society with a bunch of ignorant people, the few wise men succeed.”

He stressed the importance of standing firm in one’s beliefs and methods, even if they differ from local practices.

“Be among the few wise men and carry the bunch of ignorant people along, and some will emulate you and change. When you make things different from the way they think and the way they do things, you will succeed,” Agyapong stated.

“Stand by your position that looks like, I live in the UK or the US, and this is how things work. I am not going to change, and you will succeed,” he concluded.

There is no Kennedy Agyapong supporters, there is no Vice President supporters, we have NPP supporters.”

“I am not selfish. People have come to me to go independent, but that is not the wise thing to do and therefore I have refused to do that,” he further stated.

Meanwhile, well-known musician and media personality, Blakk Rasta openly criticized Kennedy Agyapong for endorsing Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP flagbearer.

Rasta pointed out that Agyapong had previously vowed not to support Bawumia due to unresolved issues, making his current endorsement confusing.

Blakk Rasta feels that Agyapong’s decision to publicly support Bawumia ahead of the 2024 elections could damage his political career, considering the party’s internal dynamics.

Speaking on the UrbanBlend show on 3FM, Rasta condemned the advisers who pushed Agyapong to endorse Bawumia, calling it an ill-advised decision with potentially negative repercussions.

Assin Central Member of Parliament and prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) member, Kennedy Agyapong, has affirmed his allegiance to the party, stating that he remains a dedicated NPP member.

This declaration comes in light of his recent visit to Kumasi to support Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign in the Ashanti Region.

Mr Agyapong’s visit raised questions among his supporters, leading him to clarify his position and reassure them of his commitment to the NPP.

During his 64th birthday celebration, Agyapong expressed regret for not informing his supporters beforehand but emphasized that his actions were not indicative of any departure from the NPP.

He urged both his supporters and those of Dr. Bawumia to unite for the party’s success in the upcoming elections, dismissing any notions of going independent or resigning from the NPP.

He added, ” what I want the party people to know is that I have not resigned from the party. I am not going independent. I am still an NPP member. NDC is not a viable option, they are very dangerous – Ken Agyapong

Kennedy Agyapong, the Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has urged Ghanaians to reject the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming elections, describing it as a dangerous political party.

He made these remarks while addressing traders at the Kejetia Market, emphasizing the NPP’s commitment to Ghana’s development.

Mr Agyapong dismissed claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has lost its connection with the people of the Ashanti Region, a traditional stronghold for the party.

He pointed to the enthusiastic reception that the NPP’s flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, received during his recent visit to the region as evidence of the party’s sustained popularity.

He warned against supporting the NDC, labeling it as “dangerous” and urged voters to remember the NDC’s past governance.

“As a businessman and politician, I understand both politics and business. I acknowledge the current hardships, but when you vote, remember that the NDC is not a viable option—they are very dangerous. Be cautious,” he warned.

He highlighted the achievements of the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, particularly the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, which has significantly benefited many students.

Mr Agyapong emphasized that even in developed countries, governments do not provide uniforms for students, highlighting the government’s efforts in education.

He urged voters to recognize the progress made under the current administration and to support Dr Bawumia in the upcoming elections.

“Under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia government, we’ve covered fees under Free SHS and even provided uniforms for your children.

“Even in developed countries, governments don’t buy uniforms for students. So, I urge all of you to recognise that even developed countries are facing economic crises. Don’t be deceived by false promises. Remember the NDC’s past governance. Let’s all support Bawumia,” he said.

  • Lawyers of suspect in J.B. Danquah murder trial tell court to summon Ken Agyapong, Ursula for cross-examination

Lawyers of suspect in J.B. Danquah murder trial tell court to summon Ken Agyapong, Ursula for cross-examination

The legal counsel of Daniel Asiedu, the man accused of the death of late Member of Parliament (MP) for Abuakwa North Joseph Boakye Danquah-Adu, has requested the High Court in Accra to subpoena four individuals to testify in the ongoing trial.

The subpoena is directed at Ivy Boakye, the wife of the late MP, their house help, and two MPs, Ken Agyapong and Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, the Minister for Communications.

Filed on April 22, 2024, the subpoena, cited by Starrfm.com.gh, stated that their appearance in court to testify in the matter “will be in the interest of justice to the populace.”

Daniel Asiedu, also known as Sexy Don Don, has been ordered to open his defense to two charges—murder and robbery—after the court held that the prosecution had proven prima facie evidence against him.

Vincent Bossu, who was standing trial with Asiedu for conspiracy to rob, has since been acquitted and discharged.

“…During the cross-examination of witnesses in this case, it came to light that Ivy Boakye Danquah Adu, the wife of the late JB Danquah Adu, was in the house at the time of his death yet the Prosecution failed to call upon her to testify in the case though her statement was taken during investigation,” the subpoena stated.

It went on to state that, “Jennifer Achana, the House-help, who opened the door to the house for the supposed unidentified police officers to have access to the building was not called upon to testify, yet her statement was disclosed in the case.”

The subpoena also stated that Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West and Minister for Communication, should also be invited by the Court to testify.

It is the case of the defence that, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful was the one who took third and fourth Prosecution Witness to hand them over to a Police Officer at Kanda Highways for investigations.

However, “no statement was taken from her neither was any explanation provided as to how she came across PW3 and PW4 and what transpired between them before handing them over to the police officer at the Kanda Highways.”

The subpoena also stated that, “Honourable Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, granted interviews to media stations which was aired that he has information pertaining to the incident, yet the investigator and his investigating team in the matter did not invite him to aid ni their investigations on this current trial.”

The accused and his lawyers believe that, “these individuals have relevant information, if called upon to testify in this case, will assist the court and the jury to expedite the delivery of justice.”

They also believe that in interest of justice, “this Honourable Court has the power to cause an Order of Subpoena to be issued to Ivy Boakye Danquah Adu, the wife of the deceased, Jennifer Achana, the House-help, Madam Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, MP for Ablekuma West and Minister for Communication, and Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin North to appear before the Court to testify.

    Time Abridgment

On Monday, Ms. Sophia Armstrong, counsel holding brief for Lawyer Yaw Dankwah, requested the Court to expedite the hearing of the motion for subpoena.

Originally scheduled for May 2, she proposed that the motion be heard on Wednesday, April 24, arguing that the motion filed on April 22 sought to subpoena witnesses to testify.

She explained that they preferred the witnesses to testify first before the accused is called upon to file his Witness Statement and testify.

“We applied to an order of subpoena which has been scheduled for May 2,” she stated.

“We pray for an abridgement of date for the motion filed on April 22, 2024, to be heard on Wednesday, April 24 at 12noon,” Ms Amstrong told the Court.

“We intend to call these witnesses to come and testify in the matter before we file our Defence.

“We pray the court indulges us for these witnesses to appear before this honourable court and also aide the court and the jury to come to a determination of the case before it,” she prayed.

Principal State Attorney Mrs. Sefakor Batse argued that the matter of subpoena is an administrative issue and not one for the court to expedite. After hearing submissions from both the Defence lawyer and the Prosecution, Justice Lydia Osei Marfo made the following statement.

“To subpoena a witness to testify on behalf of any party it is an administrative work to be done by the registrar of this court at the request of any such party and therefore no need for any motion to be filed to that effect,” Justice Marfo remarked.

According to reports, the Court has ordered Daniel Asiedu to appear on Tuesday at 1 pm to open his defense.

Justice Lydia Osei Marfo presided over the court and stated that if Asiedu fails to appear, his Defense should be considered closed.

Asiedu has pleaded not guilty to charges of murder and robbery. The prosecution, led by Principal State Attorney Sefakor Batse, has called eight witnesses to prove their case.

  • Anas allegedly confessed to taking $100,000 bribe in Ken Agyapong defamation suit

Anas allegedly confessed to taking $100,000 bribe in Ken Agyapong defamation suit

It is reported that investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas admitted to collecting a bribe worth $100,000 in one of his attempts to expose corrupt Ghanaian officials.

X user, @naturalshark made this claim while responding to concerns raised by renowned activist and leader of the #FixTheCountry and #OccupyJulorbiHouse movements, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, over the Supreme Court’s ruling on a defamation suit which commenced in 2018 involving Assin Central MP, Ken Agyapong and Anas.

The apex court, through its ruling, dismissed Anas’s application to reverse a lower court’s decision that dismissed his defamation lawsuit against Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong.

Previously, the High Court ruled in favor of Mr Agyapong, characterizing Anas’ journalistic approach as “investigative terrorism” rather than legitimate journalism. Following this decision, Anas sought to contest the High Court’s ruling at the Supreme Court, expressing concerns regarding the judge’s jurisdiction and potential biases.

In response to the apex court’s ruling, Oliver Barker-Vormawor said he was saddened for our democracy that it was the Chief Justice’s vote that sustained the horrible judgment which we should have been quick to wipe from our history books.”

“But this was a ruling where tomorrow will be kinder to the minority than it would the majority. Justice Kulendi understood better than the majority, the moral responsibility of justice; and as such stood twice taller than the woman he was in competition with not too long ago,” he added.

X user, @naturalshark replied that the court was fair as Anas admitted to receiving some cash and that Anas’ legal counsel failed to appeal the High Court’s ruling.

According to the user whose real name is unknown, Anas reportedly made the confession in a video.

“Anas’ lawyer didn’t know what he was doing. Instead of an appeal, he filed for certiorari, which was denied by all the justices. Anas confessed on video he had collected a bribe of $100,000. His defense didn’t rebut this evidence. That’s a crime! Be fair and balanced!,” he wrote.

As it stands now, the said video was not provided, and The Independent Ghana cannot validate the claims made by the X user.

  • Ken Agyapong has apologised for lies told during my absence from Parliament – Adwoa Safo

Ken Agyapong has apologised for lies told during my absence from Parliament – Adwoa Safo

Member of Parliament for Dome Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, has revealed that Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, has apologised to her over some claims he made during her long hiatus from Parliament to resolve personal issues.

According to her, Mr Agyapong alleged that a private jet flew her from the United States to Ghana. She noted that the claim is false and to set the record straight, Mr Agyapong apologized to her and invited journalists to Parliament to interview him about the matter.

In an interview on Onua FM on March 11, 2024, Adwoa Safo said, “Of course, and he has apologised to me. If you like, come to Parliament and interview him; it is not true. Some of the things are just hearsay, and if people hear things, they do not have that patience to investigate.”

One of the allegations she addressed was Agyapong’s claim that Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Osei-Opare provided her with GH¢120,000, and that she demanded to be appointed deputy majority leader before attending Parliament during her absence from the chamber.

She discredited these claims and urged Ghanaians to verify information before spreading it. She emphasized the importance of caution and diligence in discerning the truth.

“Nana, all those things aren’t true,” she said.

Sarah Adwoa Safo had been in the United States for over a year (since November 2021), looking after her children, especially one who, according to her, required particular care due to medical concerns.

Due to this, she was not able to fulfill her mandate as a Member of Parliament and a Minister of State.

Due to her prolonged absence, Adwoa Safo was referred to the Privileges Committee with two other MPs, Henry Quartey of Ayawaso Central and Kennedy Agyapong of Assin North for violating Standing Order 17(1) of Parliament and Article 97(1)(c) of the Constitution for being absent for 15 sittings.

Several attempts to meet the MP failed due to a lack of receipts. On the matter, Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu described Adwoa Safo’s absence as concerning in an interview with Okay FM, urging that she leave her position if she has no information about her return to parliament.

On May 22, 2022, Adwoa Safo engaged the press to explain the reason behind her absence.

She cited the well being of her son as the primary reason for her stay in the United States.

“As you know, my son is unwell and has to transition to school, so I have to ensure that all that is settled before I can resume my duties and that is exactly what I am doing.”

“I have been doing a lot to take care of my children which the law requires and as you know here in the foreign land, I have to comply with whatever I am directed to do and until all that is sorted out, I have to do what I have to do, and then I will return to my duties.”

“I will be returning definitely to serve my people. I lead and serve the people of Dome-Kwabenya and I have done that for the past 12 years and I know exactly what my responsibilities are, and I am definitely going to do that,” she told JoyNews.

According to her, she had informed the President of her predicament.

On Thursday, July 28, 2022, President Akufo-Addo relieved Sarah Adwoa Safo of her duties as the Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection in accordance with Article 81(a) of the constitution.

In response, she thanked the President for the honour given her to serve her country.

In September 2023, Sarah Adwoa Safo rendered an apology to the Ghanaian populace for her absence and inactivity during her tenure as a lawmaker and minister.

Anas’ defamation suit against Ken Agyapong dismissed by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has denied Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ certiorari application against Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

The five-member panel, led by Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, upheld the High Court’s previous ruling in a majority decision.

Six years ago, a defamation lawsuit of GH¢25 million brought by Anas Aremeyaw Anas against Kennedy Agyapong was dismissed by the Accra High Court, which also imposed a cost of GH¢50,000 on the journalist.

The legal dispute arose from Anas’ claim that the lawmaker had defamed him, leading to legal proceedings initiated in 2018.

On Wednesday, February 28, the Supreme Court, in a majority decision, dismissed the case. Despite Kennedy Agyapong’s lawyer requesting costs to be awarded against Anas, the Supreme Court declined to do so.

“Anas is a blackmailer” ruling endorsed by Supreme Court

In a recent ruling on March 15, Justice Eric Baah, a Court of Appeal judge sitting with additional responsibility as a High Court Judge, described investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas as “a blackmailer who uses blackmail to extort money from his opponents and people he does not like.”

This statement was made in the context of dismissing a defamation suit filed by Anas against Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Mr. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, citing a lack of merit in the case.

At that time, the High Court dismissed a GHC25 million defamation lawsuit brought by Anas Aremeyaw Anas against Kennedy Agyapong and imposed a cost of GHC50,000 on the journalist.

Anas had alleged that the lawmaker defamed him, leading to legal proceedings initiated in 2018. In a majority decision on Wednesday, February 28, the Supreme Court dismissed the case.

Despite the request from Kennedy Agyapong’s lawyer for costs to be awarded against Anas, the Supreme Court declined to do so.

Speaking about Anas’ work as an investigative journalist, the judge added that “What the plaintiff is doing is not investigative journalism but investigative terrorism”.

“From the above, I hold that the plaintiff is a blackmailer who uses blackmail to extort money from his opponents and people he does not like.

“What the plaintiff is doing is not investigative journalism but investigative terrorism,” the presiding judge, who awarded cost of GH¢50,000 against Anas said.

The five-member panel, led by Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, upheld the High Court’s decision from six years ago.

The judge overseeing the defamation lawsuit brought by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas against Member of Parliament Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has characterized Anas as “a blackmailer who employs blackmail to extract money from his adversaries and individuals he holds animosity towards.”

Ken Agyapong is very sentimental but has a forgiving heart – Afenyo-Markin

Effutu Member of Parliament and Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has praised Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, for his caring nature despite being perceived as self-conceited.

Afenyo-Markin highlighted Agyapong’s gentle soul and noted that he often extends care to several individuals.

However, Afenyo-Markin pointed out that Agyapong becomes guarded when people he has helped in the past turn their backs on him when he needs them the most. This observation came in light of Agyapong’s bid for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership, during which some of his colleagues in Parliament openly campaigned against him.

“I told a lot of colleagues who were openly declaring that it’s not the right way because a lot of them had relationships with Kennedy. He had supported them and didn’t expect that they would openly campaign against him,” Afenyo-Markin said.

He also highlighted Agyapong’s forgiving nature, stating, “Kennedy easily forgives, but he can go through serious emotions when he feels that you’ve betrayed him.”

Mr Agyapong himself has expressed similar sentiments, indicating that he harbors no ill will towards individuals who did not support him but feels hurt by friends who betrayed him during the flagbearership contest.

During the NPP Presidential Primaries, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong garnered 71,996 votes, representing 37.41% of the votes, while Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerged victorious with 118,210 votes, accounting for 61.47%, securing his position as the party’s flagbearer.

Effutu Member of Parliament and Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has revealed that he cautioned fellow New Patriotic Party (NPP) members against betraying Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong, during his bid for the NPP flagbearership.

Mr Afenyo-Markin emphasized the need for loyalty, citing Agyapong’s past support for many party members.

“I told a lot of colleagues who were openly declaring that it’s not the right way because a lot of them had relationships with Kennedy. He had supported them and didn’t expect that they would openly campaign against him,” Afenyo-Markin said.

Afenyo-Markin also highlighted Mr Agyapong’s forgiving nature, stating, “What many people don’t know is that man does not have an ego. Kennedy easily forgives, but he can go through serious emotions when he feels that you’ve betrayed him.”

Mr Agyapong himself has expressed similar sentiments, indicating on the KSM show that he harbors no ill will towards those who did not support him but feels betrayed by some friends who spoke against him during the flagbearership contest.

“It is not every MP who didn’t vote for me that I am angry at, no, everybody has a choice. But the very people who were my friends that I have helped to bring them to Parliament.”

He stressed that it was the betrayal and personal attacks, not the Vice President‘s victory, that fueled his bitterness.

“It’s not the betrayal, but the bad things they said about me, that is where I have the problem. So who says I’m not bitter? I am bitter, I am not because the vice president won, I am bitter because of the people that I have helped. If you are not going to vote for me, no problem but the insults. I can’t forgive them.”

The Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has categorically expressed his disinterest in teaming up with the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for the upcoming December elections.

While Dr. Bawumia has not officially disclosed his running mate, Mr. Agyapong made it clear during an interview on the KSM Show on Pan African Television in Accra on Friday, February 23, that he prefers to remain on the sidelines and contribute in other capacities.

He explicitly stated that he has no desire to become the Vice President alongside Dr. Bawumia.

“I don’t want to be vice. What am I going to say? I believe in democracy, so I want it to work. I will stay back and watch, and whatever I have to do, I will do to contribute,” he remarked.

“But I won’t accept vice as if, at all costs, Kennedy Agyapong has to be among the leaders. One thing I have always said is that you don’t need to be president to effect change in people’s lives. I have businesses that have employed many Ghanaians and put food on their table, and it’s self-gratifying,” Agyapong added.

In elucidating his decision to decline the role of vice president, Mr. Agyapong emphasized his inclination to speak his mind, a characteristic he believes could potentially undermine his superior.

“I have businesses that have employed many Ghanaians and put food on their table and it’s self-gratifying.

He candidly stated, “To tell you the truth, I can’t be vice president because I will speak my mind, and am not going to be mate and in Ghana if you speak your mind, you will be branded…”

Don’t come and apologise to me – Ken Agyapong tells ‘disloyal’ NPP members

Former presidential candidate aspirant and Assin Central Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, has indicated that he will not accept any apologies for the disrespect he faced from some New Patriotic Party (NPP) members during the party’s November 2023 presidential primaries.

Mr Agyapong, who came second in the race to lead the NPP, losing to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, emphasized in an interview on the KSM show that his kindness over the years has been misconstrued as a weakness, a perception he is not willing to tolerate in the future.

He recounted an incident where an unnamed Western Regional MP informed A Plus that even if Ken is offended after an internal election, the party will send a delegation to appease him.

Mr Agyapong mentioned that the MP reiterated this viewpoint at an event in South Africa.

“So, delegation from where? Did they not see what they were saying or they did not hear? I don’t think any delegation can come to me,” he stressed, adding, “it is my choice.”

Mr Agyapong also mentioned that he is holding back on donating an office space and a fleet of vehicles to the party.

He stated that this decision is a result of the undue attacks he faced in the lead-up to and during the primaries.

I have a 42-room office complex with pick up vehicles I had wanted to give to NPP – Ken Agyapong reveals

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has announced his decision to withhold all campaign materials he intended to donate to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the upcoming 2024 elections. This includes a 42-room office complex and pickups that he had planned to contribute to the party’s campaign efforts.

Agyapong revealed his decision during an interview on the KSM show, citing the mistreatment he endured during the NPP presidential primary in November 2023 as the primary reason behind his action. He expressed disappointment over the abuse he suffered and stated that he had initially planned to donate the office complex and pickups to the eventual winner of the primary, regardless of the outcome.

However, Agyapong emphasized that due to the vilification and mistreatment he faced during the primary, he has decided to retain the campaign materials for his own use. He expressed bitterness over the lack of intervention from party leaders to address the attacks against him, suggesting tacit approval of his mistreatment.

“This building, we have 42 offices, my intention was if I lose after a civil campaign, I would give it to the winner to use as a campaign office. All my campaign things, you’ve seen some of them sitting there, I will give them to the winner to support. But the way they vilified me, I’ve stayed quiet and allowed them to do whatever they are doing. These pickups, I am not going to use them for anything but I am not going to give them to anybody, I will keep them here,” Agyapong stressed during the interview.

Agyapong’s decision reflects the internal divisions within the NPP following the presidential primary, which saw him lose to Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who is now the party’s flagbearer for the 2024 polls. His withholding of campaign donations underscores the challenges faced by the party in uniting its members and rallying support ahead of the upcoming elections.

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has once again explained why he as developed some pain towards some of his allies in the aftermath of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries in November 2023, in which he participated.

Agyapong clarified that his dissatisfaction stems not from the primary election results but from the actions of individuals he considered friends.

He lamented that these individuals not only betrayed him but also spread malicious remarks about him.

During an interview on the KSM show on Friday, February 23, 2024, the Assin Central legislator expressed his hurt, particularly by some NPP MPs, and stated that he would never forgive them for their actions.

“It is not every MP who didn’t vote for me that I’m angry at. No! But the very people who were my friends that I have helped to bring to parliament. It is not about the betrayal but the bad things that they said about me. That is where I have a problem.

“So, who says I am not bitter, I’m bitter. I am bitter not because the vice president won, I’m bitter because of the people that I have helped… If you are not going to vote for me, no problem; but the insults, I can’t forgive them,” he said.

Asked by Kwaku Sintim-Misa, the host of the KSM show, whether he would accept an offer by Dr Bawumia to become his running mate for the 2024 polls, Ken Agyapong retorted, “No, I wouldn’t do it”.

“To tell you the truth, why I cannot be a vice president is that I would speak my mind,” he explained.

He then referenced Bawumia’s ‘driver-mate’ analogy, stating firmly, “I am not going to be the mate,” as he shook his head.

I am bitter because people I supported badmouthed me during my campaign – ‘Hurt’ Ken Agyapong reveals

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a former presidential candidate aspirant and Member of Parliament for Assin Central, has expressed his disappointment with the treatment he received during the 2023 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Primary.

In a yet-to-be aired interview with KSM on Pan Africa Television, he acknowledged the right of MPs to choose their preferred candidate but expressed particular hurt over the “insults” he endured from fellow MPs, especially those he considered close friends and whom he had supported financially in their parliamentary campaigns.

“It is not every MP who didn’t vote for me that I am angry at, no, everybody has a choice. But the very people who were my friends that I have helped to bring them to Parliament.”

  • I will never be a Vice President; I don’t want to be a mate – Ken Agyapong

I will never be a Vice President; I don’t want to be a mate – Ken Agyapong

Former presidential aspirant candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kennedy Agyapong, has noted that he will never settle for the role of Vice President.

In an interview on the KSM show, the Assin Central MP was asked if he would accept an offer by NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to be his running mate and, upon winning the 2024 elections, the Vice President.

He replied, “No, I wouldn’t do it. To tell you the truth, why I cannot be a Vice President is that I will speak my mind and I’m not going to be mate.”

This comes after Dr Bawumia delivered his vision speech as the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the UPSA auditorium on February 7, 2024, where he used the analogy of a mate and a driver, where the mate had limited control over driving; hence, in his position as a vice president.

He expressed how limited his powers and authority over decisions are, hence his desire to become president to be able to run the affairs of the country well.

But National Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, during an appearance on Kwame Sefa Kaye’s Kookrokoo morning show on Peace FM on February 20, believes this narrative is a ‘dangerous’ one to hold on to.

As stated by Mr. Owusu, a vice president is a co-driver and not a mate. As mandated by the constitution, a vice president is one who is eligible to step in as president in the absence of the president.

“But the nature of a vice president is that you are ready when the president is not there; you are there. That is why the constitution of the land says that when the president is not there, you are there. You are ready for the possibility. So a mate is not ready but vice president, you are ready.”

Ken Agyapong, Sly Tetteh, Afenyo Markin, others to have ‘reconciliation breakfast’ today

MP for Assin Central, Ken Agyapong and MP for Bortianor-Ngleshie Amanfrom, Sylvester Tetteh, will cement their reconciliation with a breakfast meeting today, February 14, 2024, which also marks Valentine’s day.

This was disclosed by MP for Effutu constituency and the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin, at the reconciliation meeting held on Tuesday following the clash between the two MPs.

The two were seen in a viral video on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, in a near scuffle in Parliament.

    Background

There was a tense encounter between Members of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong and Daniel Sly Tetteh, which nearly escalated into a physical altercation, yesterday, February 13, 2024, in Parliament.

The incident reportedly stemmed from Tetteh’s attempt to exchange pleasantries with Agyapong, during which he referred to the Assin Central MP as ‘Presido,’ a nickname purportedly coined in jest following Agyapong’s defeat in the NPP presidential primaries.

According to witnesses, Agyapong became infuriated by Tetteh’s use of the nickname, causing a heated exchange between the two parliamentarians. The term ‘Presido’ is said to be a playful moniker used by some MPs to tease Agyapong, but it appears that the veteran politician did not take kindly to Tetteh’s use of it, particularly given their reported godfather-godson relationship.

During the confrontation, Mr Agyapong reportedly demanded an amount of money owed to him by Mr Tetteh. However, the situation was calmed by the Deputy Minority Leader, who promptly whisked Mr Tetteh out of the scene, diffusing the tension.

Later, videos of both MPs smoking the peace pipe at a meeting with the Deputy Minority Leader emerged. It was at this meeting that Mr Afenyo Markin announced the reconciliation party.

Other prominent Members of Parliament within the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) including the Deputy Minority Leader are expected to be at the ‘reconciliation breakfast’.
