    A Kumasi-based trader has sparked a conversation with his bold assertion that Ghana is far better than the United Kingdom.

    In a recent interview, the trader claimed that many Ghanaians who initially sought better opportunities in the UK have regretted their decisions and are now returning to Ghana.

    “Ghana is far better than the UK. As I speak to you, all those who run to the UK have regretted it. The teachers and nurses have all returned,” the trader stated. He went on to emphasize the peace of mind that Ghana offers, saying, “In Ghana, you have your peace of mind. These nurses have money to buy my things. Unless you say you won’t use your hands to work.”

    Expressing his admiration for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the trader hinted at his potential involvement in political campaigning. “I am not a politician, but I might close my shops to campaign for Bawumia. That Mamprusi fellow is very intelligent. I believe he will help Ghana,” he added.

    These remarks were echoed by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

    In a separate interview, Wontumi stirred further debate by asserting that Ghana is more enjoyable than London.

    “I always say Ghana is better than London. If I say so, am I a joker, or is this a joking platform that I would say such things?” Wontumi remarked. He elaborated on his point by revealing that he has relocated his children to Ghana, citing the country’s pleasant environment and more affordable living costs. “Ghana is better than London. My children are in Ghana here because Ghana is more enjoyable than London,” he concluded.

    Minister Abubakar reminisced about the long history of GPCL, citing the founding of presses in Tema, Tamale, Victoriaborg, and Takoradi in addition to sales locations in all regional capitals.

    She stressed that these facilities made sure publications and important information got to every part of the country. She praised the opening of the Kumasi office as a sign of the company’s rebirth despite earlier difficulties that forced the closure of numerous operations.

    The Minister emphasized the recent achievements of GPCL, pointing out that it has been consistently profitable for the past two years. She credited the current administration’s careful and effective management for this achievement. Abubakar highlighted that this accomplishment shows that state institutions can prosper and make a major contribution to the development of the country with the correct leadership and governance.

    Kumasi market women vow to cease ritual voting for NPP

    A group of traders at the Kumasi Race Course have expressed their dissatisfaction with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), accusing the government of neglecting the Ashanti Region in terms of development.

    The traders have vowed to stop their traditional voting pattern for the NPP and instead support any government that promises and delivers tangible development projects in the region.

    During a gathering, the traders voiced their concerns, highlighting the perceived lack of progress and infrastructure projects under the current administration.

    They pointed out several key projects initiated and completed by the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, which they believe have significantly benefited the region.

    “We in Asanteman know that we don’t cast our ballot for the NDC. But the areas where we didn’t vote for them are the areas that have seen development done by them. I can show you some projects done for us by the Mahama government. They built the Kejetia market, Tafo market and several others,” said the spokesperson for the traders.

    The spokesperson further emphasized the traders’ frustration, noting their inability to identify any significant projects completed by the NPP in the Ashanti Region. “If you can ask me what the NPP has done for us, I can’t say. We won’t vote for you just because you are from our town. We will vote because of development.”

    As the 2024 elections approach, it remains to be seen how this sentiment will influence the voting patterns in the Ashanti Region and what measures the NPP will take to address the concerns raised by these traders.

    Parts of Kumasi to experience water shortage due to transmission line burst

    Persons living in some parts of the Greater Kumasi Metropolis are expected to experience water outages after a major transmission line to the Ashanti region reportedly burst.

    As a result, the Barekese Water Treatment Plant and the Achiase Booster Station in the region have been shut down for repairs.

    This information was detailed in a newsletter from Ghana Water Limited (GWL) in the region.

    Affected areas include Suame, Tafo/Pankrono, Asokwa, Bantama, Sokoban, Kronum, Barekese, Manhyia, Oforikrom, Kwadaso, Atasamanso, Kotwi, Adum, KNUST, Odoum, Asokore Mampong, and surrounding areas.

    The transmission line was reportedly damaged by equipment used by a contractor constructing drains from the Suame roundabout to Breman Ahenful.

    GWL management states that their engineers are working diligently to repair the line and resume operations as soon as possible.

    “Management assures the public that engineers are working around the clock to ensure repairs are completed as soon as practicable and supply will resume immediately works are completed,” portions of the statement read.

    Accra-Kumasi Highway project fails to see progress due to galamsey

    Contractors working on the construction of four crucial bypasses along the Accra-Kumasi Highway are facing significant challenges due to uncovered pits left behind by illegal miners in local communities.

    These pits are impeding the smooth progress of the projects, exacerbated by rainy conditions that worsen the already swampy areas.

    The government initiative to construct bypasses at Osino, Anyinam, Enyiresi, and Konongo aims to alleviate congestion and reduce the high incidence of accidents along the Kumasi-Accra Highway.

    These projects, spanning various lengths from 6.1km to 13.5km, hold promise for enhancing highway travel efficiency once completed.

    However, near the project sites in Osino and Anyinam, ongoing illegal mining activities have led to numerous uncovered pits as miners abandon sites after extracting resources.

    Similar challenges persist near the Konongo bypass project, where contractors are forced to fill swampy areas with boulders to facilitate construction.

    Team leader of STIM Limited, the consulting firm overseeing the Osino bypass project, Dolittle Kwaku Sintim-Aboagye, highlighted additional hurdles including compensation disputes and adverse weather conditions.

    He explained, “We have some mining companies and they have their terrace ponds and our alignments go through these terrace ponds so it is either we shift the ponds or go through them and we decided to go through them and that meant the mining companies must decommission these terrace ponds and that is also taking some time, and it is affecting us.”

    Moreover, Sintim-Aboagye pointed out the impact of heavy rainfall, stating, “Again, this place is a farming area and so there are compensation issues but the Ghana Highways Authority and the ministry are helping us. And also, the rains have become more severe than usual and that is affecting us.”

    In a video posted by EDHub on Twitter, the teen is said to have reacted angrily, quickly turning around and throwing the scalding mixture onto her mother’s face and chest.

    Despite the severity of the injuries, the mother has chosen not to contact the police and has decided against taking legal action against her daughter.

    Deborah, who participated in the Digitize Ghana program, expressed frustration over the government’s failure to honor its commitment to pay their wages for the past eight months, despite assurances from the Vice President.

    Ms. Enam Togbe also disclosed that she has been relying on support from friends and family to make ends meet, struggling to cover her expenses.

    The Nation Builders Corps (NABCO), launched in 2018 to tackle graduate unemployment, engaged 100,000 graduates across seven modules.

    However, with the program now concluded, former trainees like Deborah are left petitioning the government for their overdue payments.

    The traders are demanding immediate intervention from the Ashanti Regional Minister and the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) mayor. They insist that the sale of these disputed spaces be halted to ensure the safety and integrity of the market.

    Concerns have also been raised about the accessibility of fire hydrants within the market. Traders have reported that hydrants are frequently blocked by unauthorized trading activities or sealed due to leakages, further exacerbating the safety risks.

    “We cannot access fire hydrants when needed because they are either blocked or sealed. This is a disaster waiting to happen,” another trader warned.

    Tensions flared at the Abundant Life Assemblies of God Church in Bohyen-Adumanu, Kumasi, as members protested against the induction of a new head pastor.

    The situation escalated to the point where armed security personnel reportedly had to be called in.

    A video shared by user @eddie_wrt shows church members holding placards and wearing red bands around their heads and necks. They can be seen and heard protesting vehemently towards a group of men in suits and military uniforms.

    “Chaos erupted yesterday as some members of the Abundant Life Assemblies of God Church at Bohyen-Adumanu, Kumasi, protested against the induction of a new pastor to head the branch. Despite the misunderstanding and protest, the head of the church in the Ashanti Region proceeded with the induction in the presence of armed security men,” the caption of the video reads.

    The reasons behind the congregation’s opposition to the new pastor are unclear. However, comments under the post suggest various possible motivations.

    Some claim internal church politics and unfulfilled promises made by pastors seeking votes.

    “I was told the induction happened, they were not even allowed into the church,” wrote one commenter. Another expressed frustration, saying, “They could’ve used this same energy to demand developments from their DCE, MCE, MP, president, and vice.”

    One comment pointed to possible political manoeuvring within the church: “Clearly there’s a foul play somewhere, these pastors also do politics. They make promises to their fellow pastors for votes, then later try to fulfill them at all cost. Personal interest nkoaa.”

    Another user commented on the broader issue of employment in Ghana, stating, “The only real job in Ghana is politics and preaching. Everything else is not really a job, we just doing some nonsense thing in town.”

    The protest and subsequent induction, despite the objections, highlight underlying tensions within the church community.

    “In Kumasi, you can spend GHC10 in the morning on food, and this can sustain you till evening. In the evening, you also spend GHC10. This, in total, is GHC20,” he explained. However, in Accra, even GHC50 is insufficient to provide food for the whole day.

    The student particularly lamented the high cost of noodles, specifically mentioning Indomie, a popular instant noodle brand.

    He noted that in Accra, the product is sold at GHC30 and above, reflecting the overall higher cost of living in the capital city. What he spends in Accra is more than enough to take care of his feeding for more than a day.

    The disparity in food prices between Accra and Kumasi highlights the economic challenges faced by residents, especially students and individuals on limited budgets.

    The student’s experience underscores the need for measures to address the affordability of essential goods and services in Accra to ensure a better quality of life for all residents.

    The Ashanti Regional Security Council (ARSC) has issued a stern warning to residents of Kumasi and its surrounding areas, urging them to refrain from hiring land guards to resolve land disputes.

    The ARSC’s statement highlights increasing concerns over the surge in illegal activities perpetrated by land guards in the region.

    In a communiqué dated June 20, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) advised individuals to follow legal procedures to settle their land issues. The ARCC emphasized that those who engage the services of land guards will face severe consequences.

    “Any person found to engage the services of land guards will be apprehended, prosecuted, and arraigned before court,” the statement declared. The Council also warned that the land guards themselves would not be spared and would face the full force of the law.

    The ARSC stressed the importance of using appropriate legal channels to address land disputes, noting that the activities of land guards often result in violence and pose a threat to law-abiding citizens.

    “Based on this fact, the Ashanti Regional Security Council requests all citizens in the region to use the right procedures to address their land disputes rather than employ the use of land guards whose activities always threaten law-abiding citizens and result in violence,” the statement read.

    The Council urged the public to adhere strictly to this directive to ensure peace and stability in the region.

    “It is the expectation of the Regional Security Council that the public will accept the above directives for strict compliance to ensure peace in the region,” the ARSC concluded.

    The rule of law in some communities in the country has been sidelined when it comes to land disputes. Land guards are contracted by individuals who do not believe in the legal system or who seek to capture lands belonging to others.

    These land guards often inflict pain on individuals and in some cases push them to their early graves. The Police Service is working assiduously to nip the activities of land guards in the bud.

    He succeeded his father, Nana Kwaku Duah Agari, as Brahyiahene and also held the title of Brehyia Duke of Asante. He passed away on January 1, 2002, in Kumasi.

    2 dead in accident on Konongo-Kumasi Highway

    A tragic accident at Nobewam on the Konongo-Kumasi Highway has claimed the lives of two individuals, including the driver of a Kia Granbird VIP Bus with registration number GE 5099-15.

    The incident, which occurred after a wrongful overtaking manoeuvre, also resulted in several injuries.

    According to reports, the VIP bus, which was travelling from Yeji to Accra with passengers onboard, attempted to overtake several vehicles ahead.

    During the overtaking manoeuvre, a vehicle emerged from the opposite direction, forcing the VIP bus driver to quickly return to his lane to avoid a head-on collision.

    In the attempt to swerve back into his lane, the VIP bus collided with a MAN Diesel Trailer Truck with registration number GN 6933-11. The truck was driven by Abraham Ayama, who had one other occupant onboard.

    Emergency services rushed to the scene, and the injured were transported to Nobewam SDA and Hopecare Specialist Hospitals for treatment.

    Despite their efforts, the bus driver and one other passenger succumbed to their injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.

    Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has initiated the distribution of tablets under the Ghana Smart Schools project.

    The first batch was handed over to students at Opoku Ware School.

    During the event, Bawumia also inaugurated the first smart school block at Opoku Ware School and observed the initial lessons in Kumasi classrooms.

    “The handover of the tablets and the commissioning is in fulfilment of a pledge by the government to provide an ICT-driven environment for teaching and learning for the next generation of Ghanaians by providing each student with an educational tablet,” Bawumia said.

    President Akufo-Addo launched the Ghana Smart Schools project on March 24, 2024, with a promise to distribute 1.3 million tablets to students nationwide, aiming to revolutionize education in 30 senior high schools across the country. The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with KA Technologies, has set up 274 support centers for the tablets.

    However, the initiative has faced criticism. NDC flagbearer John Mahama condemned the allocation of funds for free tablets, describing it as a vote-buying strategy and pointing out that there are more urgent educational issues, such as the neglect of ongoing projects.

    Mahama has promised to address the challenges with the free SHS program if elected, accusing the current administration of poor implementation.

    Per reports the distraught mother of the girl, whose identity remains confidential, urged Barima Osei Mensah to keep away from her daughter.

    The Adinkra Pie CEO, who reportedly boasts about being the next Asantehene after Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, warned the mother not to speak his name disrespectfully, citing his direct ties to the Manhyia Palace.

    Barima Osei Mensah, who has ten children with ten different women, has faced accusations from some of these women for neglecting his paternal responsibilities.

    In this particular case, the mother of the 16-year-old girl, who attends a school in Kumasi, insists that she only wants the royal to stay away from her daughter.

    “I sell at site Barima Osei Mensah Adinkra’s work site. I sell banku there. One of my daughters is in school and she came. She is the eldest so I go with her to sell at his site. So my daughter told me the man who is the boss here using this particular car says he loves me and wants us to date.” the mother cried.

    “So I asked my little girl again what exactly he Adinkra said. She said ‘he says he loves me and I should do my mind well and allow him to date me and do to me whatever he wants’. So I told my daughter when you meet him again and he repeats it tell him that I, Yaa, I said he should never say that to you again. He kept approaching her and my daughter will cry and come to me” the mother sadly narrated.

    “I just got to Accra from Kumasi this morning. I tell you, I can’t spend more than 2 hours in this place. Ei! I just got down and decided to freshen up and get some food to eat. So I decided to visit the food joint here,” the man says, pointing at a food vendor.

    He continues, “She has some waakye. I asked her how much the food was, and she said, GHC 30 and GHC 35.00. Ah! This early morning? What job have I done to earn that amount for food?”

    The man then explains his experience with another vendor: “I decided to visit another vendor, and she said it starts from GHC 7.00. That does not include the additives. Kumasi, we can buy the same thing starting from GHC 5.00, and you can get spaghetti with some salad and co for GHC 1.00. Over here, the salad alone is GHC 3.00 upwards, and the spaghetti is GHC 2.00 upwards. Ei! I don’t think I can spend more than 2 hours here!?”

    Since 2022, there have been numerous reports from individuals, groups, and institutions about the increasing expenses associated with living in the city.

    Prices of goods and services, especially food, housing, and transportation, have surged, making it difficult for many to afford necessities.

    A fire outbreak reduced four shops to ashes at Ayigya in the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti Region.

    The incident occurred around 7 PM on Monday, May 27, prompting an immediate response from emergency services.

    At least three fire engines were dispatched to the scene to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.

    DO2 Nicholas Poku Antwi, in charge of regional operations at the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), confirmed the swift deployment of fire engines from Chirapatre, KMA, and Manhyia stations, as the nearest tender at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) was out of service.

    Despite the extensive damage to the shops, no casualties were reported. The prompt action of the fire service prevented the fire from causing more widespread destruction in the area.

    The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to DO2 Antwi. Authorities are working to determine the origin of the blaze and assess the total damage caused.

    “Nobody got injured. We have to make sure we do excavation and other things and come up with the actual cause of the fire”, he further indicated.

    According to checks by GhanaWeb, the incident occurred in front of Grace Baptist Church at Amakom in Kumasi.

    LilWin, traveling with two others, collided head-on with another vehicle while driving his Benz. All occupants, including LilWin, sustained injuries and were immediately taken to the Accident and Emergency Unit of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.

    A UTV report late Saturday mentioned that LilWin had undergone surgery.

    Despite his injuries, LilWin was seen at the Kumasi premiere of his movie, “A Country Called Ghana,” held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He was ushered into the venue with a plaster on his head, indicating the severity of his injuries.

    Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has assured that the Wa-Kumasi highway will see significant improvements before the December 2024 general election.

    He mentioned that he has been in discussions with the Minister of Roads and Highways to enhance the road by tarring and asphalting it.

    “Before the end of this year, fingers crossed, the Sunyani (Kumasi) all the way to Wa, the road, we are going to see some major improvement in this major road. … and I want to see a dramatic improvement. Not only just coal tar, I want to see asphalt all the way,” Dr Bawumia stated.

    The Vice President made this promise in Wa during a meeting with the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs as part of his campaign tour of the region.

    This commitment came in response to a request from Naa Dikomwine Domalae, the President of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs and the Paramount Chief of the Daffiama Traditional Area, who urged Dr. Bawumia to consider rehabilitating the Wa-Bamboi-Kumasi highway, currently in a deplorable state.

    Naa Domalae highlighted that rehabilitating this road would greatly facilitate the movement of people and goods, thereby boosting commerce in the region.

    Emphasizing his determination to see the project completed, Vice President Bawumia assured the esteemed chiefs and queen mothers that the road would be constructed before, not after, the 2024 general election.

    “I do not want to say, vote for me and I will make it happen. I want it to be done so that you will see that it is done before we even get to the election. So, we are going to do it,” the NPP flagbearer stressed.

    Additionally, the Chief appealed to Dr. Bawumia to expedite the construction of other critical roads in the region, such as the Sabuli-Hain-Tumu and Kajekperi-Tumu roads. The Vice President assured that these requests would be considered.

    He also highlighted the importance of the Tumu-Chuchulga road as another critical stretch that required immediate attention.

    “So, there are quite a few roads, even though we have done some roads, there are some critical roads that we need to get done in the region,” Dr Bawumia indicated.

    During a visit to the Upper West Region, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia highlighted the achievements of the current NPP-led government, citing the completion of 531 projects in the region. He expressed his commitment to further developing the region if elected President in the upcoming December 7, 2024, general elections.     “Look at how we are living and selling along with waste in this gutter, if sanitation task forces were working, would we be living around this?

    Addressing journalists in Kumasi, he highlighted the lack of previous provision for pediatric dialysis, stressing the hospital’s commitment to offering these life-saving treatments, regardless of the stage of renal failure.

    Furthermore, Professor Addai-Mensah acknowledged the support of philanthropic organizations in procuring additional dialysis machines, which will not only enhance the hospital’s capabilities but also alleviate pressure on other healthcare facilities like the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and reduce treatment costs for patients.

    “Usually, we do not have dialysis for children, and it is one area we are looking at as a hospital – to give children the opportunity to live irrespective of their end stages of renal failure.”

    The ceremony, attended by traditional leaders, government officials, and prominent New Patriotic Party figures, took place in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, on Friday, May 10.

    As the Prempeh I International Airport becomes operational in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital, the United Kingdom (UK) anticipates a surge in freight movement through Ghana’s ports.

    British High Commissioner to Ghana, Harriet Thompson, envisions this growth being facilitated by the airport’s inauguration, bolstered by existing partnerships between the two nations and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

    Here are some key features of the airport.

    The modern airport has a terminal measuring approximately 12,000 square meters.

    At the entrance, visitors are greeted by the sign “nante yie”, a phrase wishing them well in their journey.

    The airport is said to handle 800,000 passengers per annum, 200 passengers per hour, primarily from the middle and northern belt regions.

    The airport had a 4-level security check for the in-flight smuggling of illegal materials and illicit drugs.

    Background

    There were extensive developments in 1958 and 1959 by the Ghana Government on the runway, navigational facilities and human resource to enhance internal airline operations. The installation of runway and taxiway lights and the extension of the main runway to the southern part in the late 1970’s was another major improvement to the Kumasi Airport.

    In 2003, Kumasi was declared an International Airport primarily for regional operations with the full complement of Security, Customs and Immigration staff.

    Work on Phase Two (2) of the Kumasi Airport Project began in 2018. It includes the construction of a new Terminal Building to handle one million passengers per annum, two boarding bridges, a road network, perimeter fence, a substation and parking lot among others. The cost of the expansion work is estimated at £66,350,000.

    Phase three of the Kumasi Airport Expansion Project involves the extension of the existing runway pavement from 1,981 meters to 2,320 meters, construction of new taxi link and two Apron Parking Stands, an Air Traffic Control Building, and a Fire Station among others. The cost for this phase is estimated at £58,900,000.

    The Kumasi Airport is currently served by two domestic carriers namely: Africa World Airlines (AWA) and Passion Air. The Project Contractor is Messrs Contracta Construction UK Ltd.

    President Akufo-Addo emphasized that the timing of the commissioning, coinciding with the 25th-anniversary celebration of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s enstoolment, is not coincidental but a deliberate tribute to the rich cultural heritage and historical legacy of the Ashanti kingdom.

    He stated that renaming the airport to honor Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh I and commissioning it alongside the Asantehene’s anniversary reflects the deep respect and reverence his government has for traditional institutions.

    “The transformation of Kumasi Airport into Prempeh I International Airport, Kumasi represents more than just bricks and mortar. It embodies the spirit of renovation, excellence and collaboration that defines the Ghanaian people.

    “Through meticulous planning, hard work and dedication, we have turned the vision into reality and today we reap the fruits of our neighbour,” he said.

    The President stated that his decision to rename the Kumasi International Airport after the 14th Asantehene was firm, highlighting that all admirers and historians agree that Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh I played a crucial role in strengthening the Ashanti kingdom during his reign in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

    “During his reign, he faced significant challenges including colonial encroachment and internal strife but his leadership and vision were instrumental in shaping the destiny of the Ashanti people.”

    He recalled that during the heightened tensions between the Ashantis and the British, which culminated in the Sagrenti War won by the British, Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh I was arrested and subsequently exiled to Sierra Leone and the Seychelles.

    The President noted that the very grounds on which the airport now stands were the site of Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh I’s final steps on Ghanaian soil before his exile.

    The President urged the Ghana Airport Company Limited to ensure the preservation of the premises as a historic site. He emphasized that Prempeh I is revered as a symbol of Ashanti pride, independence, and sovereignty, noting that the airport’s commissioning serves as a tribute to his enduring legacy.

    President Akufo-Addo expressed optimism that the airport would alleviate the challenges faced by numerous travelers and businesses in the Ashanti region and beyond.

    “The airport will now serve as an important gateway, forging stronger economic ties, supporting international trades and tourism and promoting cultural exchanges,” he said.

    He encouraged Ghanaians, especially residents of Kumasi, to seize the opportunities presented by the airport for growth and development. The President stated that with the commissioning of the Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi, the nation is entering a new chapter of progress and prosperity.

    The decision comes as a result of high operational costs and revenue shortfalls, prompting the company to exit the country.

    Preceding this move, Glovo had previously consolidated its branches in Osu, Spintex, and Kumasi into its administrative office in East Legon due to financial constraints.

    The once bustling East Legon office now sits empty, stripped of office equipment, furniture, and company signage.

    The impact of Glovo’s departure extends beyond logistics. Approximately 30 direct staff members, including managers and workers across various departments, will be directly affected.

    Additionally, hundreds of delivery riders, integral to Glovo’s services, will also feel the repercussions of this decision.

    However, amidst the uncertainty, there is optimism for some. Delivery riders, forewarned of Glovo’s impending shutdown, are expected to be the least affected.

    Many already work for other delivery platforms, lessening the immediate blow of Glovo’s closure.

    Some of these riders, speaking to Citi Business News, expressed a pragmatic attitude towards the company’s exit, indicating their readiness to transition to alternative platforms.

    “There are other delivery companies that we can explore now that Glovo has ceased operations so I am not so bothered,” said William Jotefe.

    “I am not so bothered. Although the only food delivery company left now is Bolt Food, I can switch to general delivery services and work for others. So I am not really bothered about the news,” Victor Asuma, another Glovo rider said.

    Despite contractual agreements, Glovo was not responsible for the motorbikes or cars used by its delivery riders.

    The Ashanti Regional Security Council has taken decisive steps to tackle the issue of stray cattle on the streets of Kumasi by establishing a dedicated task force.

    Announcing the initiative during a press briefing, Regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah stated that the objective is to reclaim the city from the intrusion of these animals.

    Following an inspection of newly planted trees as part of the Green Ghana Day initiative, the Regional Minister emphasized the negative impact of roaming cattle on the region’s greening efforts.

    Recognizing the challenge of restraining cattle, Mr. Osei Mensah explained the rationale behind forming an external task force. He mentioned that task force members would be compensated for their services and entrusted with protecting the planted trees from cattle interference.

    Mr. Osei Mensah assured that the allocated budget would cover the task force’s expenses for an initial one-year period and could be renewed based on resource availability.

    “You know, it is not easy to catch a cow. It is extremely difficult, so we are going to get some of those people who are good at it to do the work for us. We are going to engage them, we will pay them, and it will be their responsibility to ensure that the trees that we planted will not be consumed by or destroyed by the cattle.

    “We will pay them during the period that is for a whole year, and if it is possible to have adequate resources to sustain it, then we sustain them the following year too.”

    Three separate accidents in the Ashanti Region on Sunday (28 April) resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people, with 14 others surviving with varying degrees of injury.

    The initial incident took place at Dadwen, on the Fomena-Obuasi motor road.

    A speeding Toyota Hiace, traveling from Dunkwa to Kumasi, collided with a trailer heading towards Obuasi from the Anwiankwanta highway.

    A Jetta sedan was also involved in the collision. Seven fatalities were reported by Abdallah Boafo, the Adansi North District Director of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), with two individuals succumbing to injuries at the AGA Hospital and five at the Obuasi Government Hospital.

    Boafo noted the area’s susceptibility to accidents and ongoing construction. Investigations into the cause are underway.

    Another accident occurred on the Yaw Nkrumah and Bonfa stretch of the Effiduase-Ejisu motor road, where a passenger bus collided with a trailer, resulting in four deaths. The victims remain unidentified as investigations proceed.

    Additionally, a collision between a SANYONG vehicle and a truck on the Offinso-Koforidua stretch of the Kumasi-Techiman highway left approximately twelve passengers injured, with two in critical condition.

    The SANYOUG vehicle, en route from Kumasi to Techiman, veered out of its lane, colliding with an oncoming Articulator Vehicle. Twelve passengers sustained injuries, and the driver and another passenger are critically injured and receiving treatment at Offinso St. Patrick Hospital.

    3 die in tragic gas explosion at Kumasi

    A devastating explosion of domestic gas has struck Sepe, a suburb of Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, resulting in the loss of three lives and leaving one individual injured.

    The deceased, identified by authorities as Hamdella Jibril (37 years old), Kenyeyiti Meena-Lla Adam (5 years old), and Rafat Huruna (18 years old), tragically lost their lives in the explosion.

    Meanwhile, Majid Adams, the sole survivor, is currently receiving medical treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).

    The incident occurred around 8 am on April 10, 2024, when Hamdella Jibril detected a gas leak emanating from their six-kilogram gas cylinder in the kitchen.

    Attempting to address the issue, Jibril moved the cylinder outside, unaware of the nearby coal pot ablaze.

    Regrettably, the ignition from the coal pot triggered a powerful explosion, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

    Despite the severity of the explosion, the affected family chose to bury the deceased without informing the police. It wasn’t until April 19, 2024, that an informant alerted authorities about the incident, prompting an investigation.

    Upon arrival at the scene, police officials confirmed details provided by family elders, who disclosed that the deaths occurred on different dates following the explosion.

    “Police proceeded to the scene and met three elders of the deceased’s family namely Mohammad Muniru Ridwan, Fuseini Wahab and Gibrine Lami, who confirmed the story.

    “According to the elders, the incident occurred on April 10, 2024 about 8am, resulting in the death of Hamdella Jibril, aged 37, Kenyeyiti Meena-Lla Adam, aged 5, and Rafat Huruna aged 18.

    “Majid Adams, who was also affected by the explosion, is currently on admission at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital,” a Manhyia Divisional Police report sighted by the paper said.

    The report said the trio did not die on the same day, noting that, “On April 11, 2024, Kenyeyiti Meena died and on April 17, 2024 Haruna Adams and Hamdella Jibril also died,” adding, “The three deceased have since been buried without informing the police.”

    Kenyeyiti Meena-Lla Adam passed away on April 11, 2024, while Rafat Huruna and Hamdella Jibril succumbed to their injuries on April 17, 2024.

    The trio was laid to rest without prior notification to law enforcement.

    As part of ongoing investigations, three family members of the deceased have been summoned to assist the police in gathering further information regarding the tragic incident.

    Speaking on News File on April 20, he explained that back in 2014, the NDC government had intended to establish power generation facilities in the middle belt but faced fuel supply challenges.

    “A gas pipeline had gotten to Prestea but there wasn’t a gas pipeline to Kumasi and therefore a physical relocation at that time would not have made sense without fuel.

    Fortunately, unfortunately, the people of Ghana decided that we should leave the scene so there was a truncation of the process. Other than that, generation in the middle corridor would have happened earlier,” he said.

    He noted that if not for this interruption, power generation in the middle corridor would have commenced earlier. Explaining the advantages, he emphasized that having generation in the middle corridor is beneficial.

    Additionally, he highlighted GRIDCo’s indebtedness to the Volta River Authority (VRA) due to transmission losses surpassing approved limits by the PURC. Dr. Donkor emphasized that when generation is closer to the market, transmission losses are minimized.

    “It also helps stabilize the grid. You see, there is a certain balance that the grid must have. If there is a situation where until now we have the Eastern and Western corridors in terms of generation and even then there is a delicate balance, you cannot over-generate from one corridor with nothing coming from the other. The grid will trip.”

    “The initial inter-connected transmission system, there is a certain balance needed. So having generation in the central corridor will help that,” he said.

    The NDC has largely raised concerns about the amount spent in relocating the plant, as well as the renaming of the plant despite the NPP’s initial opposition its acquisition while in opposition.

    Policy analyst Siddique Abubakar Suleiman has called on journalists to investigate the expenses incurred in relocating the AMERI plant from Takoradi to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

    He believes that the reported $36 million cost warrants scrutiny for accountability.

    President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently commissioned the first phase of the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant (K1TPP), also known as AMERI, in Anwomaso.

    However, reports of the substantial cost of transporting the plant have sparked controversy and raised questions about transparency and accountability.

    Siddique contends that the decision to relocate the plant to Kumasi was politically motivated, aimed at appeasing voters in the region.

    He emphasised that such tactics of “deceit” would not go unnoticed, especially considering the significant taxpayer expense involved.

    “I want to take the angle of votes. The Ashanti Region will pull a surprise for the NDC. Despite all the loans the government has taken, they could not procure a power plant for the Ashanti Region,” he told Oheneba on Battle Ground on Power FM.

    Speaking on the cost of transporting the parts of the power plant, Siddique stated, “$36 million for moving a plant from Takoradi to Kumasi? They should show us how they paid for the transportation of the power plant. This is pure thievery. Ghanaians should know that these people are stealing from us. These people do not deserve a change from us.”

    “The journalists must investigate this amount… I think the NPP wants to take us for fools because this amount could have built schools. Do you know the number of schools this amount could have built?” he quizzed.

    Touching on the hardship in the country, Siddique said, “Ghanaians should know that the NPP has taken us back 20 or 30 years.”

    He also asked, “Does the $36 million include the installation of the power plant?” I believe Bawumia’s hands are in this deal because I know he likes locations where there is money.”

Moreover, it provides avenues for practical training in thermal power operations for students of institutions like Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Kumasi Technical University.

    Background:

    The Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Project emerged following the conclusion of the BOOT agreement between Ameri Energy Limited and the Government of Ghana concerning the former Ameri power plant. In 2022, the plant transitioned to Ghanaian ownership and was subsequently transferred to the VRA. The strategic decision to relocate the plant to Kumasi led to the project’s renaming as the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Project, wholly funded by the VRA’s internally generated funds.

    Implemented in two phases, the first phase, initiated in May 2023 and commissioned on Wednesday, involves relocating six TM2500 units with a total generation capacity of 150MW. The second phase, slated for completion in June 2024, aims to further increase the plant’s capacity to 250MW. Execution of the project is overseen by VRA’s in-house engineering team, with support from selected service providers.

    However, in an interview on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on April 10, he explained that his plan was not to extend the sea but to dredge a canal.

    He clarified that dredging a canal would enhance industrialization and improve transportation at the port, ultimately aiming to enhance port accessibility for the efficient transportation of goods as part of a broader economic industrialization policy. Additionally, he noted that this initiative would reduce pressure on land transport by heavy-duty vehicles.

    “I want Ghanaians to understand that I’m here to build a country. My vision is very clear. That’s how clear my vision is. I can see that development is going to happen this way because you need to connect your water bodies.

    “Why do you think your colonial master is hiding that secret from you? But when you go to his country, he’s connected all his waters. He calls them Thames, Canals, Ferry, Woolwich, and secretly he’s transporting things on there,” he said.

    Cheddar clarified that when he mentioned dredging to Kumasi, he was referring to a canal and not extending the sea. He further pointed out that if there had already been industrialization in areas like Ada, some development would have taken place.

    “If you drill and connect a sea to any river, the name for it, which will be in development, will be a canal.

    “Yes, canal. Now, a canal can have any sort of river, lagoon, sea, whatever that it is. And look, when you go to Ada, the water in Ada shares border right with the sea, right there. The opportunity is we could have created a harbor there if there was already industrialisation in those areas,” he added.

    The businessman dismissed claims that it was impossible.

    “I mean you guys make it look like it’s unaffordable, it’s unacceptable and it cannot be done. [It’s a long time.] No, it’s not. Actually, I’ll tell you. Look, a vision without action is a mere dream.

    “You and the dreamer, there’s no difference. That’s what a visionary is, if you have a vision and you can’t find a way to activate the vision, if you don’t apply action, it’s a useless vision. It can be done.

    “Once you decide to do it, it gets done. Now, why do I have the confidence to say so? Because I’ve done things. I have raised the first 16th-floor building in a place where they started building one floor, two floors, one floor, and two floors.

    “I came and I went, and I put two floors underneath it. On one and a half plots, I put 108 apartments,” he added.

    He highlighted the presence of underutilized river bodies like Tano, Pra, and Oti, emphasizing the need for dredging to enhance coastal transportation and stimulate industrial growth.

    Cheddar emphasized the significance of industrialization in bolstering Ghana’s economy and expressed confidence in his ability to execute the dredging project effectively.

    He underscored the importance of engaging professionals with expertise in dredging, mapping, and defense to ensure the success of the initiative.

    “I am not surprise, I am happy because I was looking at the African Games to be a big thing but to have one statement kind of competing with the national games, it’s a great trend.

    “My vision is to bring industrialisation in this country. One of the main things needed is logistics.

    “When I was looking at the map when I was in Techiman, I discovered that they have a river in Tano and it goes all the way to the border. Tano comes all the way to the sea. It has been sitting there for 100 years and no one has connected it.

    “River Pra and Oti are very close and they connect. They are all there and connected but no one has dredged them. It will take the river bodies, that is what dredging is about,” he said on TV3’s New Day, Monday, March 25.

    He continued, “I am talking about coastal transportation and the future if Ghana is built on industrialization which I am about to start.”

    “We are running from industrialization as a country and this is the only thing that will save our economy,” Cheddar added.

    He stressed that “I know what to do to do it [dredging the sea in Kumasi] by bringing the right professionals that understands dredging, mapping and defensing.”
