Merge sea with rivers, lakes: How Cheddar plans to bring the sea to Kumasi

Ghanaian presidential hopeful and businessman, Nana Kwame Bediako, known as Freedom Jacob Ceasar or Cheddar, has elaborated on his ambitious plan to connect Kumasi, a landlocked region in Ghana, to the sea.

Bediako previously pledged to dredge a sea to Kumasi to stimulate economic activities in the country, a proposal met with skepticism by many Ghanaians.

During a listening tour at the University of Cape Coast, Cheddar explained his vision, citing his childhood fascination with maps and Africa’s geographical layout. He also highlighted the untapped potential of Ghana’s water bodies, including the Pra and Oti Rivers.

“When I was checking the map of this country, I saw the rivers Pra and Oti. When you’re coming from Kumasi to Cape Coast, the big river is just there. It’s not connected.

“When I started this tour, I went to Techiman, then to Tamale, then to Bolga, then to Bogoso, then to Techiman. So every time I went to the room, I quickly studied the map of that region. Then I found out that there’s a river Tano in Techiman, and it goes all the way to the end of Takoradi, sharing the border with the Ivorian coast. Next to it is the sea,” he explained.

Cheddar said he was going to leverage these rivers for transportation by connecting them to the sea through dredging.

“So what we have to do is just dredge our land, let the sea merge with the water bodies, the river, and the lagoon, and start to use it as a transportation. It’s been there, but we haven’t thought of it.

“You can look at the Manchester canal, all of you can google how they dredged the sea to merge with the river for it to become that,” he said.

The proposal, which has sparked debate, aims to transform the economic landscape by positioning Kumasi as a hub for sea transport, potentially creating new trade routes and opportunities.

Cheddar’s plan draws inspiration from global examples like the Manchester Canal, where inland areas have been connected to the sea, suggesting a similar possibility for Ghana.

  • Danger looms over Barekese Dam as encroachers destroy 80% of forest cover

Danger looms over Barekese Dam as encroachers destroy 80% of forest cover

Officials from the Ghana Water Company have observed that eighty percent of the forest cover protecting the Barekese Dam has been destroyed, leaving the reservoir vulnerable to evaporation.

Encroachment onto the dam’s buffer zone is escalating beyond control, resulting in disruptions to water distribution for eighty percent of Kumasi residents who rely on piped water from the dam.

Ashanti Regional Chief Manager overseeing production, Dr. Hanson Mensah-Akutteh, highlighted the drastic reduction in the dam’s water volume due to farming activities and encroachment. This situation is already causing frequent water shortages in areas like Asokwa and Kwadaso.

“The forest cover that is supposed to protect the catchment area has been reduced by 80 percent. In other words, almost all the trees are gone, and the cover has turned into a bare land where farming activities are ongoing”, Ashanti Regional Chief Manager in-charge of Production, Dr Hanson Mensah-Akutteh said.

The dam’s siltation has also halved its original water capacity, posing a severe threat to water availability in Kumasi.

Urgent action is needed to remove encroachers and protect the buffer zones.

Efforts to reforest the buffer zones are being hampered by farmers clearing land for agriculture.

The Ghana Water Company Limited is seeking support from local chiefs and the District Assembly to enforce laws against encroachment.

Nana Kusi Obuodom of Barekese emphasized the importance of enforcing laws to prevent encroachment on buffer zones.

Experts stress the necessity of maintaining forested riverbanks to prevent siltation and shrinkage. However, with ongoing encroachment on the Barekese dam buffer zone, the risk of water scarcity for Kumasi residents looms large.

According to the driver, his car is a blue and yellow-colored Kia Picanto with registration number GW 3764 – 17.

The incident is said to have occurred around 10 pm on Saturday, February 24, 2024.

Nyamekye revealed in an interview on Angel FM on February 28, 2024, that the car was taken just two days after he had bought it.

“I was using other people’s cars to work until I was able to save enough to purchase my own. What pains me more is that it was just Saturday that I bought the car. I have not even spent 10 pesewas from the car,” he stated.

Nyamekye recounted that he was approached by a young man along Bantama High Street who hired him for a trip to Koduah.

“The destination was right after the Police Barrier, about two houses. On our way, I heard him speaking to someone on the phone that he had bought food so he should come and open the gate for him. The next thing I saw was that he had removed a pistol after which he said ‘If you make noise, I will kill you.’

He added that two other men joined the passenger, after which he was beaten and thrown out of the car before they sped off.

He reported the matter to officers at the police barrier; however, Nyamekye said the officers could not chase the suspects because they had no car.

“The policewoman out of empathy gave me GHC10 to pick a car. I went to the police station behind Okess where I was issued a form to make a radio announcement,” Nyamekye stated amidst tears.

Kumasi-Tafo youth abuse ‘kojo besia’ for being gay

A disturbing incident occurred in Kumasi-Tafo, where a young man was booed and assaulted by some youths who accused him of being gay due to his effeminate nature.

In a video that surfaced online, a group of about seven men can be seen taunting the young man as he tries to pass by. They repeatedly chant “trumu di fo” (meaning “you are gay” in Twi) and block his movement by pulling parts of his dress.

Despite the young man’s attempts to fight off the abuse, he was overpowered by the group.

A netizen who reacted to the video vouched that the victim is not gay as alleged.

The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the safety and rights of individuals who may be perceived as LGBTQ+ in Ghana.

This comes at a time when Parliament has passed the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill also known as the anti-LGBTQ bill after three years following its introduction.

During February 28th’s Parliamentary session Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin sought to make amendments to the bill during the second consideration stage citing human right infringement.

However, the Minority rejected his request, prompting the Speaker to push for the third consideration stage,.

Speaker Alban Bagbin put the bill to a voice vote and the ayes had it.

As it stands now, Parliament has tabled the bill to the President’s desk for President Akufo-Addo to assent to the bill to become law.

The Anti-LGBTQ+ bill aims to criminalize LGBTQ+ activities in Ghana. It proposes strict penalties, including imprisonment, for individuals engaged in activities related to homosexuality and LGBTQ+ advocacy.

Additionally, the bill seeks to prohibit the promotion of LGBTQ+ rights, organizations, and events in Ghana.

Prior to its passage, there had been several amendments to the bill. After deliberation, Parliament decided that the minimum custodial sentence has been set at three years, with a maximum of five years for promoters and sympathisers.

Additionally, individuals caught directly engaging in these activities will face a minimum sentence of six months, extendable to a maximum of three years.

Already, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has described the passage of bill as “profoundly disturbing.”

A portion of the UN Human Rights statement read “I call for the bill not to become law. I urge the Ghanaian Government to take steps to ensure everyone can live free from violence, stigma and discrimination, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Consensual same-sex conduct should never be criminalized.”

Other pro-LGBTQ bodies have warned that many individuals will be vicitimised based on assumptions of them being gay.

Kejetia market reconstruction: Kumasi traders fume over delay for a year

The Federation of Kumasi Traders has expressed dissatisfaction with the prolonged silence from the Government regarding the reconstruction of the burnt section of the Kejetia Market, which was destroyed almost a year ago.

Despite assurances to refurbish the affected area and facilitate the return of traders, little progress has been made, leaving many without a means of livelihood.

Nearly a year after the fire outbreak, the leadership of the trader groups highlighted that most affected members are still unable to resume business. They also reminded the Government of its commitment to provide financial support to the victims who lost their livelihoods.

Nana Akwasi Prempeh, President of the Federation of Kumasi Traders, called on the Government to expedite the renovation and reopening of the business place.

Despite expectations for the management and the Central government to address the situation at the beginning of the year, there has been no progress.

He expressed concern about the lack of action on the burnt shops, stating, “It’s been almost a year now since that fire incident happened, which was made up of about 55 shops -33 were burnt completely, 19 partially and there were other shops within that enclave that had been cordoned off.

“As I speak to you now, nothing has been done about the burnt shops. We don’t know when the construction is going to start, who is going to bear the cost of the reconstruction and even the affected traders how they are going to restart their business.”

He also urged authorities to promptly address issues with metering at the market, noting that traders were paying for electricity bills without receiving the meters, resulting in unreasonable monthly charges.

  • Unstable power supply hampers water distribution in Greater Kumasi – GWCL

Ghana Water attributes the inconsistent water supply in the Greater Kumasi Metropolis to the unstable power supply affecting some of its water supply stations in the Ashanti Region.

According to the company, three of its stations – the Barekese and Owabi Water Treatment Plants, along with the Achiase Booster Station – have faced power outages from the Electricity Company of Ghana in recent weeks.

This situation, Ghana Water states, has had a detrimental impact on water distribution to various areas within the Greater Kumasi Metropolis.

“The Barekese and Owabi WTPs as well as the Achiase Booster Station have been experiencing power outages in the last few weeks. This has made it difficult to produce and transmit potable water to our cherished customers and the public,” said a statement from the company.

The water company says its management has notified the ECG of the challenges, as it “counts on ECG to improve power supply to all GWL installations in the region to enable GWL to serve the metropolis with the constant flow of water. Management regrets the inconvenience the challenge may have caused”.

Numerous districts within the Greater Kumasi Metropolis, such as Atonsu-Agogo, Bantama, Abrepo, and neighboring communities, are grappling with severe water shortages, impacting residents’ daily activities.

In response to the scarcity, residents in these locales are compelled to seek water from boreholes and underground sources, often undertaking lengthy journeys to access it. Additionally, many are forced to procure water from private distributors at inflated prices to meet their needs.

“I haven’t been able to clean some of my utensils for days now. I have to use the water for other chores like cooking and washing,” a water consumer lamented.

In recent weeks, the region has experienced inconsistent power supply, raising concerns among residents.

However, the Electricity Company has refuted claims of a return to ‘Dumsor’, attributing the situation to efforts to address redundancies in power supply.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Water Company is urging residents to use water judiciously until the issue is resolved.

The inferno has now left many slum dwellers homeless.

  • Kumasi experiencing power and water crisis

Kumasi experiencing power and water crisis

Business operators and residents in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, are expressing frustration and outrage over persistent power outages plaguing the area.

The frequent disruptions in power supply in recent weeks have sparked discontent in the Ashanti Regional capital, raising concerns about the reliability of electricity services in the region.

Areas like Asokwa, Oforikrom, Bosomtwe, and other parts of Greater Kumasi are particularly hard-hit. Complaints include damage to electrical appliances and a negative impact on productivity.

When Asaase News visited TI AMASS Senior High School in Asokwa on Thursday morning, the lack of electricity at water pumping plants forced students to search for water. 15-year-old Pokuaa Nyamekye expressed concern about maintaining good hygiene if the situation persists.

“For someone like me if I have my period and I don’t take my bath I can’t go to the classroom. Some of us have to skip dawn lessons to search for water and this has affected normal life on campus. We humbly pray that this is resolved very soon otherwise things will get worse in the coming days.”

“It started over the weekend and today around 1 am some of us had to hunt for water again”, said another student. “We have come to the court premises for some help. Some are even bathing at the [Kumasi] mall. This is terrible”.

The Ghana National Fire Service, observing the situation, fears more fire outbreaks could occur if nothing is done to address the power outages. DO3 Peter Adai, the Ashanti Regional Spokesperson for the Service, emphasized the importance of safety precautions during power fluctuations.

Efforts to obtain comments from officials at the Electricity Company of Ghana have yielded little results as of the time of this report. However, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) asserts that it is closely monitoring the situation.

The regulator assures that water will be restored by the close of Thursday, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Richard Asiedu, the Ashanti regional spokesperson at the PURC, explained, “Since last Saturday, we realized that most residents in parts of the Greater Kumasi areas have been experiencing water shortage. We reached out to the ECG, and they informed us that they had a cable blast around one of their substations, so they were trying to fix the situation. The situation has affected water supply as the Ghana Water Company also relies heavily on power supply during their operations.”

There is a strong push for an alternative arrangement to avoid disruptions in power distribution in Kumasi, as residents maintain that the situation is taking a toll on their livelihoods.

  • I’ve successfully restored Asante’s soul and spirit – Otumfuo

I’ve successfully restored Asante’s soul and spirit – Otumfuo

Ashanti overlord Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has declared that he has restored the spirit and soul of Ashanti by receiving artefacts looted from Kumasi approximately 150 years ago at the Manhyia Palace.

Seven golden artefacts, taken from Kumasi in 1874, were traced to the Fowler Museum in California, United States.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II successfully secured the artefacts after numerous unsuccessful attempts by his predecessors, including Otumfuo Agyemang Prempeh II.

A durbar of chiefs was organized at the Manhyia Palace to unveil the artefacts and commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War, which occurred in 1874.

This event marks the 25th anniversary of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s ascension to the Golden Stool.

“When we came here, Otumfuo, His Royal Majesty and I will quote him. He said that he has been able to return our (Asante) soul to its original place. “

“The items are still items that have spiritual relevance to us. They are still active; they  would be activated and they would be used.”

Professor Kwasi Ampene of the Department of Music at Tufts University in Massachusetts, United States, facilitated the return of the artefacts.

In an exclusive interview with JoyNews, Professor Ampene stated that the Asantehene is delighted with the return of the pure gold artefacts, considering them a restoration of the Asante soul to its original place.

According to Professor Ampene, a member of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences who extensively studied Asante culture, the items hold spiritual significance for the Asante Kingdom and will be actively used.

The artefacts include Asipim chairs made of silver, Sika Amena necklaces, armbands, and anklets – all crafted from pure gold.

Another set of artefacts is expected from the British Museum in April this year and will be unveiled on May 12, 2024, during the Akwasidae Festival celebrations.

Professor Ampene commended Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for initiating the return and acknowledged Opemsuo Osei Tutu Ababio for his efforts in empowering the facilitation process.

Ivor Agyemang Duah, the Technical Advisor to the project, informed Joy News that the artefacts will be accessible to the general public at the Manhyia Palace Museum once the museum undergoes rehabilitation.

  • Your looted treasures must be reclaimed – Prof at Birmingham University to Asantes

Your looted treasures must be reclaimed – Prof at Birmingham University to Asantes

The Head of the Centre of West African Studies at Birmingham University, Professor Tom McCaskie, has called upon the Asante Kingdom to actively pursue the repatriation of treasures looted from Kumasi in 1874 and 1896.

These treasures, including gold artifacts and gold dust, were taken by the British during two invasions of Kumasi before it was annexed as a colony in the early 1900s.

Despite previous efforts to reclaim the items, Professor McCaskie asserted that more action is needed to compel the British to address the matter.

He emphasized the importance of putting this historical episode behind and fostering Asante unity under the Asantehene while moving forward into the future.

“It is time to put this episode in the past and reassert Asante Unity under the Asantehene and go forward into the future and I encourage Asante to pursue further the matter of restoration of the treasures that were taken in 1874 and 1896.”

Historical accounts indicate that the gold artifacts were taken to Britain and auctioned off to various museums. Notably, those taken during the Sagrenti War are currently housed in institutions such as the Royal Collection in Windsor, the British Museum, the Ehrich Collection in the United States, the Glasgow Arts Gallery, the Royal Scottish Museum, the Scottish United Service Museum, and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

While some agreements have been reached with two British Museums for the return of certain items, it remains unsatisfactory as the items are only being loaned to their owners. Professor McCaskie encourages the Asante people to persist in their pursuit with determination.

The historian also highlights the presence of gold dust, worth billions of pounds, taken by the British as part of the booty. This gold, part of a substantial sum kept in Adakakase, Aburaso, and Breman, was bequeathed to Kofi Karikari in 1867.

The gold dust alone in Adakakase, at Kwaku Dua’s death, was valued at over 400,000 ounces, equivalent to 1.2 million pounds sterling in 1867 and presently exceeding 2 billion pounds.

Notably, this particular gold is distinct from cultural artifacts and is considered private loot, prompting Professor McCaskie to stress its separation from the cultural treasures that the Asantehene is striving to recover for Asanteman.

  • How Ewes helped Ashantis during wars in the past – Historian Anokye Frimpong gives details

How Ewes helped Ashantis during wars in the past – Historian Anokye Frimpong gives details

As the Asante Kingdom prepares to commemorate 150 years since the Sagrenti War, coupled with the 25th anniversary of the reign of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu, curiosity about Asante history and traditions is on the rise.

Lawyer Yaw Anokye, shedding light on Asante history, particularly during the era of wars, highlighted the unique collaboration that unfolded between the Asante and Ewe communities.

He said that the Fanti people, who were allies of the British, wanted the war to end as soon as possible so that they could get rid of the Ashanti presence in their land.

For that reason, they refused to contribute soldiers to the British army. Instead, they relied on Captain Glover, who brought in troops from Accra, Akuapim, and Akyem, as well as from the West Indies, Hausaland – Northern Nigeria, Lagos, Lagos, Gambia, and Sierra Leone.

This was a huge coalition against the Ashantis, to make sure that they outnumbered the Asante army. And while the troops had arrived, towards the end of 1873, they made sure that more soldiers would arrive to surprise the Asante.

At that time, the Ewe people were most of the time the map readers of the Asante people, anytime they wanted to make incursions to the east, under Edubofuo.

They had lost over 20,000 soldiers in the east, because they wanted to invade the Oyo empire with the Eʋe people, in Nigeria. The Asantehene had to call Edubofuo back to the coast when they learned that Sir Garnet Wolseley was arriving, and they also learned that one of their own entourage, they had sent to Britain, had betrayed them.

They wanted the British to understand them because as part of the 1831 treaty they signed with the British, the Asante were to give up all the Twi-speaking tribes they had conquered. The Wassa, the Akyem, Twifo, Assin, Denkyira, and Elmina. But the Asante felt that this was purely an African affair and that when they made a treaty with the British, they did not agree to give up these states.

Because long before they came in, these people had been subdued by the Asante under Osei Tutu, and they were serving them. And so they did not think that the British could rightfully claim them because they said they wanted to serve the British. And then, the British also said that the Asante should stop human sacrifice.

The Asante wanted Queen Victoria herself to understand the Asante tradition and the African form of religion, that whenever a great king died, for them, it was just a transition to the other world, and they needed slaves and servants to accompany them and serve them. And so it was not a matter of the Asantehene always killing people, but that when an Asantehene or a famous chief died, someone had to be made to accompany the king. And for them, they did not see it as murder. They saw it as part of their rituals, which they felt Queen Victoria should know. And then, the people being killed were those who were already war captives, so whether they killed them to accompany the king or not, being war captives, and prisoners, they could dispose of them in any way they wanted.

Anokye said that the Asante and the Eʋe people had a history of cooperation and mutual respect, and that they fought together against the British invasion.

Historian Anokye Frimpong’s revelations provide a captivating glimpse into the historical dynamics between the Asante and Ewe communities during times of conflict.

Wontumi did no wrong, leave him alone – Kumasi chiefs declare

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been cleared of allegations of disrespecting the Ashanti stool.

Chairman Wontumi had been accused of making some derogatory remarks against the Ashanti Kingdom and Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. Following the remarks, Chairman Wontumi had been on the wanted list of the Kumasi Traditional Council.

    https://twitter.com/oyerepaofficial/status/1751946474198319268?s=20

Earlier, he was scheduled to meet the Council; however, due to ill health, as disclosed by the Leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he was unable to do so. An ultimatum for Mr. Wontumi to appear before the council by January 29, 2024, was issued, of which he honored.

It was at the January 29 meeting with the chiefs that Chairman Wontumi was cleared of any wrongdoing.

A video shared by Kumasi-based Oyerepa TV showed the Chiefs addressing the matter. In the said video, one of the chiefs argued in favor of Wontumi and further cleared him of any wrongdoing.

He further cautioned the accuser, Kokosuhene, Nana Kwaku Duah, to refrain from bringing political issues to the Manhyia Palace.

“The constitution says that chiefs should refrain from active politics… when the comments were being made Nana Kokosohene should have left the moment, he heard Wontumi say that he cannot even challenge a statement made by the Okyeame – he shouldn’t have sat there,” the chief said in Twi.

The chief also said that Wontumi limited himself to a political kingdom which means his statement was only about the NPP and not Asantehene and the Asantehene.

Why is Mahama always engaging in politics of name calling? – Popular serial caller quizzes

Former President John Dramani Mahama has found himself under scrutiny for what some describe as a recurrent engagement in the politics of name-calling.

A prominent serial caller, Sir Obama-Pokuase, well-known for actively participating in public discourse, has raised pertinent questions regarding Mahama’s communication strategy.

Sir Obama, who has gained popularity for his insightful analyses and critiques, has recently taken Mahama to task for what he perceives as a consistent pattern of employing derogatory language in political interactions.

In a tweet, Sir Obama questioned the rationale behind what he described as a persistent engagement in politics of name calling by Mr Mahama.

“Why is Mahama always engaging in politics of name-calling?” he asked.

Giving instances to buttress his claim, he noted that: “Last week, in Kumasi, he referred to President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia as “Jack Toronto and his kid brother,” emphasising that, “this is not the first time he’s doing that.

“In the lead up to 2016 elections, he used to reference then candidate Akufo-Addo as “Opana”, meanwhile, Nana, on all political platforms refer to him as “Yɛnwura Mahama”, to wit, “Our Dearest Mahama.” It is about time he stopped the petty jokes! 2024 elections is going to be about policies and track records, not name-calling,” he stated.

Kumasi to get 33-unit military accommodation facility

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah, has presided over a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a 33-unit housing complex intended for the military.

The initiative is a response to a Supreme Court ruling directing the transfer of portions of government land to the Golden Stool, affecting existing military accommodations.

In compliance with the Supreme Court directive to cede part of the government land in the Nyhiaeso, Danyame area to the Golden Stool, the Regional Minister explained, “so we are relocating our staff who are within the enclave. As a result of that, we have to relocate some military personnel, so we are coming to construct a 33-unit accommodation facility for the military”.

Under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the project is led by the Lands Commission in the Ashanti region.

Regional Lands Officer Peter Osei Owusu anticipates the completion of the housing complex by October 2024, as conveyed during the sod-cutting ceremony.

Brigadier General Charles Agyemang Prempeh, the General Officer Commanding the central command, expressed gratitude for the project, emphasizing its alignment with the Ghana Armed Forces expansion initiative.

“The Ghana Armed Forces has embarked on an expansion project where we need to expand to be able to take on the security challenges in the country. In so doing, the units in the central command, particularly those in 4 garrisons, are equally expanding. The corresponding effect is that we need to have accommodation to house these soldiers. Fortunately, it coincided with the ceding of portions of land to the Golden Stool, and that has necessitated the relocation of my officers from where the Golden Stool is taking over to this new site.”

“This is a special project because it takes into account the officers who are living in that area to have accommodation in the new area. By doing so, we will have more accommodation than before, and it is going to help us in our expansion drive to have accommodation for our officers.”

99% of residents will attest Akufo-Addo has not abandoned Ashanti Region – NPP to Mahama

The Ashanti Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has responded strongly to former President John Dramani Mahama’s claim that the region, despite historically contributing significant electoral votes, has been neglected by the current government.

During his campaign for the proposed 24-hour economy policy in Kumasi, Mahama criticized the government, pointing to unfinished projects like the Kumasi Central Market.

In rebuttal, Adom Appiah, the NPP’s regional secretary, vehemently contested Mahama’s assertions and pointed to completed infrastructure projects as proof of the government’s dedication to the Ashanti Region.

Mr Appiah specifically highlighted the successful revitalization of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital’s 44-year-old mother and child block.

He emphasized that the structure, which was considered structurally unsound, was demolished and reconstructed under President Addo Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s administration.

Asserting his position, Appiah stated, “99% of Ashanti residents will agree with me when I say that President Akufo-Addo and Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s administration has not neglected the region,” Mr Appiah declared.

He added “If you have been to Kumasi, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, for instance, there was a 44-year-old mother and child block for 44 good years, this block stood unattended to. President Akufo-Addo pulled it down and rebuilt it, recognizing its importance to the 27% of Ghanaians who depend on it.”

Asante Regalia to be exhibited in Ghana for the first time

Today, on January 25, 2024, the Manhyia Palace Museum, in collaboration with the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the British Museum, has unveiled details of a significant cultural partnership.

The partnership involves the display of gold and silver regalia associated with the Asante royal court at the Palace Museum in Kumasi, marking a long-term loan commitment by the V&A and the British Museum.

Many of these regalia items will be showcased in Ghana for the first time in 150 years. The collaboration follows an official visit to London by the Asantehene (King of Asante), Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in May of the previous year.

The discussions and negotiations were led by the Asantehene’s technical advisors, Ghanaian historian Ivor Agyeman-Duah and British professor of African and Asante history Malcolm McLeod, over the past nine months.

These cultural artifacts, with historical and spiritual significance to the Asante people, are linked to British colonial history, having been looted during the Anglo-Asante wars of the 19th century.

The V&A is lending seventeen items, including gold peace pipes, soul-washers’ badges, sheet-gold ornaments, silver straining spoons, and anklets.

The Manhyia Palace Museum, through separate agreements, will showcase these items in an exhibition planned to celebrate the 2024 Silver Jubilee of Asantehene Osei Tutu II.

The collaboration also commemorates the 150th anniversary of the 1873-4 Anglo-Asante war and the 100th anniversary of the return of the Asantehene Prempeh I from exile in the Seychelles.

These objects, some acquired through indemnity payments and auctions, hold historical importance in both Asante and British cultural narratives.

The Director of the V&A, Dr. Tristram Hunt, expressed pride in partnering with the Manhiya Palace Museum, acknowledging the importance of sharing collections with a colonial past.

The Keeper of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas at the British Museum, Lissant Bolton, highlighted the long-standing cultural partnership and the privilege of lending significant cultural objects for display in Kumasi during the Asantehene’s Silver Jubilee year.

Notes on the collaboration include the loan of 17 items from the V&A collection and 15 items from the British Museum to the Manhyia Palace Museum. This collaboration aims to celebrate cultural heritage, foster understanding, and contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding historical artifacts.

Ashanti chiefs summon Maurice Ampaw over derogatory comments

Private legal practitioner and prominent member of the New Patriotic Party, Maurice Ampaw has taken chiefs of the Ashanti Kingdom to the gutters for summoning Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi

Speaking on the ‘Mmra ne Abrabo’ show on Wontumi TV, the lawyer accused the chiefs of being thieves and girlfriend snatchers.

He claimed that the chiefs are not worth talking about Chairman Wontumi because some of them engage in multiple sale of land.

“The chiefs ‘dragging’ Chairman Wontumi, have you finished solving your problems? Some of you are thieves,” he claimed.

His remarks come after a summon was placed on the head of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Chairman Wontumi, over some derogatory comments about the Asante kingdom.

The controversy arose during the vetting of NPP parliamentary aspirants in the Ashanti region when Chairman Wontumi allegedly claimed to have “built his own kingdom with military and police force in the Asante Kingdom.”

  • 4 illegal FX Market operators busted in Kumasi; convicted

In a crackdown on illegal foreign exchange (FX) activities, law enforcement authorities in Kumasi have successfully apprehended four individuals operating outside the legal framework.

The arrest and subsequent convictions mark a notable achievement in the ongoing efforts to curb illicit financial activities within the Foreign Exchange market.

Reports indicate that the individuals were operating without the necessary licenses and approvals required by financial regulatory bodies.

The Asokwa Circuit Court 2 in Kumasi delivered a verdict, sentencing Senyah Poku and Yaa Serwaa of Senyah Poku Enterprise, an unlicensed foreign exchange bureau operating in Patase, Kumasi.

The court has imposed a fine of six hundred penalty units, equivalent to GHS7,200.00, on each of the individuals.

The convicted persons pleaded guilty to charges of “Conspiracy to Engage in the Business of Dealing in Foreign Exchange Without Licence” and “Engaging in the Business of Dealing in Foreign Exchange Without Licence.”

    Background

The Ashanti Regional Police Command, Kumasi, in collaboration with the Other Financial Institutions Supervision Department (OFISD) and the Security Department of the Bank of Ghana investigated and arrested four persons dealing in foreign exchange without approval and a licence from the Bank.

The undercover investigation began on October 29,2023 and concluded on December 3, 2023.

The other suspects awaiting trial are Adam Isak and Alhassan Nuhu of Macowasi Forex Bureau, another unlicensed foreign exchange bureau also operating on the KNUST Campus, Kumasi.

The OFISD in conducting supervisory duties in Kumasi, detected certain anomalies in the Foreign Exchange (FX) market and their effective work and preliminary intelligence gathering, led them to several illegal/parallel foreign exchange market operators in the Kumasi area.

    Foreign Exchange Laws

Kumasi: Narcotics Control Board Director allegedly hires armed thugs to claim children from estranged wife

Director of the Narcotics Control Board, Kenneth Adu Amanfo, caused a commotion at Kwadaso Estate in Kumasi when he allegedly attempted to forcibly take custody of his children while being accompanied by four armed men.

The situation escalated until a compassionate bystander intervened, rescuing the woman and her two children and providing refuge in a nearby church.

A visibly distressed Mrs. Adu Amanfo shared her harrowing experience with Luv News, recounting how a black Landcruiser intercepted her car. Armed men allegedly ordered her out, forcibly pushing her to the ground.

“Initially I didn’t know who they were. The four men were all armed, wearing desert security camouflage uniforms, with face masks. They carried pistols and a rifle. It was when Kenneth stepped out that I identified him as my husband,” the sobbing woman told Luv News.

“They ordered me to get out of the car. When I got out, one of the armed men sat in my car and ordered the children to get out of my car but they said no. He ordered them to get into the Landcruiser but they declined and started crying,” she said.

The unfolding chaos drew a sizable crowd, leading to the intervention of a concerned resident named Kwame Fosu Appiah.

He expressed his disapproval, stating, “What he did to the children was bad. The children were shocked. They pushed one of the children and she fell and her Bible fell to the ground.”

“One of the children, the boy, started running while the girl was crying out for help. I had to intervene. I told him what he was doing was bad. I asked him; so if somebody should video you and put it on social media what will you do?”

Mr. Appiah recounted that, after conversing with Mr. Amanfo, the latter instructed his associates to enter the vehicle, and they swiftly departed. He alleged that the men confiscated Mrs. Amanfo’s phone, and unfortunately, she sustained a cut to her palm.

The Director of the Narcotics Control Board, Kenneth Adu Amanfo, and his wife have been living separately for a decade. Mrs. Amanfo asserts that she has been solely responsible for the care of their children during this time. Recently, she claims that he has been seeking custody of the children and attempted to forcibly take them on Sunday.

Mrs. Adu Amanfo has officially reported the incident to the Central Police in Kumasi, and the police have stated that they are conducting an investigation.

  • Tema’s Hip-Hop Exodus: Mysteries behind disappearing trailblazers unveiled!

Tema’s Hip-Hop Exodus: Mysteries behind disappearing trailblazers unveiled!

In Ghana’s music mosaic, some talented rappers from Tema struggle in the shadows. Sarkodie’s success contrasts with their unrealized potential. Why?

A decade ago, Tema’s rap battalion, featuring D-Chryme, Sarkodie, Yaa Pono, and more, emerged, leaving an imprint. Despite Sarkodie’s monumental rise, others faced challenges.

For Keche, still active in 2023, and Yaw Siki, retired after a near-fatal accident, their paths diverged.

Stay Jay’s promising career waned after introducing a controversial term. Opanka’s early impact waned, partly due to comparisons with Sarkodie.

D Cryme transitioned from Sarkodie’s hype man, achieving initial success with Twi Pop. Yaa Pono, once Tema’s street king, faces a mysterious career status.

While talent is evident, their struggles raise questions. Is it merely insufficient effort, or deeper issues like strategic planning and support systems?

Ghana’s music resurgence in Kumasi Rappers, with ‘Kumerica’ and thriving acts like Yaw TOG, suggests a dynamic shift. As the industry evolves, will Kumasi’s rising stars face the same challenges in 2033?

  • Family of murdered businesswoman prevented from attacking suspects

The timely intervention of police officers prevented a group of enraged family members from physically assaulting the prime suspect and an alleged accomplice in the case of the 35-year-old businesswoman who was tragically killed by her house help at her residence in Sokoban, Kumasi.

Clearly agitated, the family members attempted to attack the suspects as they were leaving the court premises after their initial appearance. Some even resorted to throwing stones at the police vehicle carrying the suspects, and they chased the vehicle in an attempt to reach the suspects.

The prime suspect, 22-year-old Allister John, had confessed to the alleged murder during his first court appearance before the Asokore Mampong District Court on Monday, September 18, 2023. Another individual suspected of being an accomplice was also in custody.

The court proceedings revealed that this gruesome act was the result of a conspiracy involving five individuals, including the two suspects currently in custody.

The prosecution has identified three additional suspects – Collins, Biggie, and Christian Obu – who are currently evading capture, and the police are actively pursuing their apprehension.

During their second appearance before the Asokore Mampong District Court on Tuesday, October 3rd, the prosecution disclosed that the autopsy report indicated the victim’s death was unnatural, strongly suggesting that she had been killed by another person.

Consequently, the prosecution requested that the court remand the suspects once again to allow for further investigations. The court granted this request, and the suspects are scheduled to appear before the court once more on October 17, 2023.

  • Kumasi: Autopsy reveals stomach injuries on woman killed by househelp

The 35-year-old woman allegedly murdered by her house help died as a result of multiple head and abdominal injuries, as revealed in an autopsy report presented in the Asokore Mampong District Magistrate Court on Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

Stella Osei, also known as Princess Afua Ahenkan, sustained multiple injuries to her head and stomach after being struck in the head and stabbed in the stomach multiple times by the prime suspect, John Allister.

Her househelp, Allister, along with an accomplice, James Anokye, a 27-year-old driver, is currently on trial for the alleged murder of the businesswoman at her Sokoban Apaaso home on September 11, 2023.

The primary suspect, who applied for work on September 4, 2023, began working the following day, and he was assigned to the woman he allegedly murdered at Apaaso near Kumasi.

The police stated that he repeatedly struck his employer’s head and face with a club after stabbing her on September 11, 2023, at approximately 11:00 am, shortly after she had prepared fufu for them to eat. This occurred while the victim’s 11-year-old daughter was at school.

After committing the crime, Allister invited James Anokye and another individual named Collins, the 2nd and 3rd accused persons, to the deceased’s home and stole a KIA Sportage vehicle with registration GS 307-21, a Samsung mobile phone, rice, cooking oil, and other valuable items.

They then fled to Accra, where they contacted Biggy, a fourth accomplice who is still at large, to sell the stolen vehicle to Christian Obu, the fifth accomplice who is also at large.

Allister used some of the proceeds from the sale of his employer’s KIA Sportage car to purchase a Toyota Vitz car with registration number GS 3107-23.

While the police were pursuing the 3rd, 4th, and 5th accomplices, the 2nd accused abandoned the stolen KIA Sportage vehicle at Oyibi Police Station and fled.

Following a police report, the Crime Scene Management team discovered the body of the late Stella Osei, also known as Princess Afua Ahenkan, in the garage of her Apaaso home. A blood-stained club believed to have been used in the murder was also found at the crime scene on Tuesday, September 12, 2023.

An intelligence-led police operation led to the arrest of the 1st and 2nd accused persons in their hideouts in Accra on September 14, 2023.

In court, ASP Stephen Ofori, who is prosecuting the case, requested that the accused persons be remanded to enable the police to locate the three other accomplices who are still at large.

Last month, Allister allegedly stabbed his employer, 35-year-old Stella Osei, to death after working for her for only six days.

Along with accomplices, he allegedly sold his employer’s KIA Sportage vehicle and stole bags of rice, cooking oil, and other items from her home.
